Tuesday, April 30, 2019 Synagogue Shooting, and NYT Cartoon On Saturday, “a gunman walked into a San Diego-area synagogue crowded with Sabbath worshippers on Saturday and opened fire with an assault-style rifle, killing one woman inside and wounding three others.” Reuters

On Sunday, the New York Times editorial staff stated that they are “deeply sorry for the publication of an anti-Semitic cartoon” that was published last Thursday in the international edition of the paper. New York Times, Axios From the Left The left is focused on the shooting — condemning white nationalism, and criticizing Trump for his divisive rhetoric and once again defending the Charlottesville protestors. “Saturday’s attack came just a few weeks after reports emerged that the Department of Homeland Security had disbanded its group of analysts who focused on stopping such attacks. That occurred even though domestic terrorism is arguably one of the biggest threats to American national security: In 2017, 150 Americans were arrested for plotting attacks in the United States, compared to 110 arrests of international suspects. That commitment requires action by the Trump administration — which seems uninterested in this growing threat.”
Joel Mathis, The Week

“The fact is that anti-Semitism and Islamophobia in the West flow from one source: the quest for ethnic purity. Those who accept one bigotry while thinking they will be safe from the other are living a delusion… both minority groups are today threatened by the emergence of far-right movements utterly hostile to diversity. If these movements reach critical mass, the outcome of old debates will be moot. History has already shown us where this road leads.”
Murtaza Hussain, The Intercept

“At the core of the white nationalist movement is the anxiety of ‘the great replacement,’ a conspiracy theory that posits Jews, black people, and Muslims will ultimately replace white people and force them into subordination. Jews are viewed by those who ascribe to these set of beliefs as the master manipulators behind this elaborate plan, trafficking in non-white immigrants and refugees… anti-Semitic rhetoric and anti-immigrant violence go hand in hand.”
Rebekah Entralgo, ThinkProgress

“During a question-and-answer session with reporters on Friday, Trump was asked if he still thinks there were ‘very fine people’ on both sides of the Charlottesville rallies… Trump responded to the question by defending the widely denounced false equivalency he drew between white supremacists and people who were in Charlottesville protesting white supremacy…

“While it may have been the case that some people were in Charlottesville demonstrating that weekend merely because they felt aggrieved about a Confederate monument being taken down, many others walked through the streets chanting ‘Jews will not replace us’… what ‘Unite the Right’ was really about was never in doubt.”
Aaron Rupar, Vox

“It takes away nothing from the horror of the [recent] crime to say that it feels familiar, following not just the October 2018 massacre at a synagogue in Pittsburgh but also a rise in reports of anti-Semitic incidents overall. None of this felt nearly so normal before the march in Charlottesville… the consequences of shrugging off anti-Semitic violence remain with the nation… The weekend of August 12, 2017, may well have been a turning point in recent American history.”
David A. Graham, The Atlantic

Regarding the Times cartoon, “Before San Diego & Pittsburgh, deadly attacks on Jews in synagogues happened in other countries. Before Charlottesville, violent nationalists marching with torches screaming ‘Jews will not replace us’ happened in other countries… before the NYT made its terrible decision, the publishing of outrageously anti-Semitic cartoons by leading national newspapers also happened only in other countries… We must confront the anti-Semitism in America.”
Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), Twitter From the Right The right rejects attempts to blame Trump for the shooting, and argues that the Times cartoon exemplifies growing acceptance of anti-Semitism on the left. “Because everything must be about President Trump, the left blames him for Pittsburgh and San Diego. His critics point to his shabby response to Charlottesville (Trump actually did condemn the white nationalists and neo-Nazis, but posited ‘fine people’ on their side who didn’t exist). Yet, Trump was explicitly rejected by the San Diego and Pittsburgh shooters, precisely because he’s so pro-Israel.”
Rich Lowry, New York Post

A hatred of Israel is the one thing all anti-Semites have in common… The [shooter] hadn’t cooked up his ugly ideas reading ‘Mein Kampf’ in a cabin in the deep wilderness of Red America, but in a comfortable home in Southern California using the internet. The shooter wasn’t raised under the shadow of a Robert E. Lee statue or a Confederate flag, but in a substantially diverse area in a deeply liberal state… The shooter’s manifesto makes clear that he didn’t kill because of Donald Trump or some alleged dog whistle or a New York Times cartoon or any concerted ideological cause other than racial hatred.”
David Harsanyi, The Federalist

At the same time, “the distance between the offices of The New York Times international edition and the Chabad synagogue in San Diego, which a gunman attacked on Saturday, is growing smaller as the reach of the internet is growing larger…

“Jews have been killed by extremist right wingers and by extremist Muslims, but not by hard left haters, at least not yet. Why focus so much attention on the ‘benign’ anti-Semitism of anti-Israel extremists on the hard left? For one obvious important reason: The violent anti-Semitism of the hard right, as represented by the murders of Jews at prayer in San Diego and Pittsburgh, is universally condemned by all decent people, including conservatives. The ‘benign’ anti-Semitism of the hard left, which often is disguised as anti-Zionism, [gets] a pass from many liberals.”
Alan Dershowitz, The Hill

“Here was an image that, in another age, might have been published in the pages of Der Stürmer. The Jew in the form of a dog. The small but wily Jew leading the dumb and trusting American. The hated Trump being Judaized with a skullcap. The nominal servant acting as the true master. The cartoon checked so many anti-Semitic boxes that the only thing missing was a dollar sign…

“[But] the problem with the cartoon isn’t that its publication was a willful act of anti-Semitism. It wasn’t. The problem is that its publication was an astonishing act of ignorance of anti-Semitism — and that, at a publication that is otherwise hyper-alert to nearly every conceivable expression of prejudice, from mansplaining to racial microaggressions to transphobia.”
Bret Stephens, New York Times

“If the Times management was as horrified by the international edition’s transgression as they should be, they would engage in the same deep repentance — meaning a sincere and articulated apology combined with a commitment to change — that the paper would demand of other publications (particularly conservative) that committed similar wrongdoing… the paper should explain in detail how the cartoon came to be published. It should explain what — if any — disciplinary actions were taken against those that made the decision to print it, and what steps the paper is taking to ensure there are no repeat performances.”
Wesley J. Smith, National Review On the bright side…

Crocs with miniature fanny packs actually exist, and we have so many questions.

POLITICO Playbook: Chuck and Nancy head back to the White House

By BLAKE HOUNSHELL and DANIEL LIPPMAN

04/30/2019 06:08 AM EDT

Presented by

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) leave a news conference on Friday, Jan. 25. | Andrew Harnik/AP Photo

DRIVING THE DAY

THE MAIN EVENT today comes at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, when House Speaker NANCY PELOSI and Senate Minority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER, along with a few top committee chairs, are due to meet with the president to talk about … at long last! … infrastructure.

Democrats laid out their bargaining position on the matter in a letter Monday, but meetings with Trump have a tendency to, er, roam. Will the president bring up any other topics that have been on his mind lately?

A House leadership staffer emails this reminder: “Last time Trump brought up impeachment in one of the White House meetings in January, Pelosi … pivoted back to the original topic.”

Both parties say they want a deal — though given Dems’ aggressive demands and Senate Majority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL’S skepticism about infrastructure spending, it could take a while. Plus, it’s always hard to predict what this president will do.

— THE STAKES … HEATHER CAYGLE and BURGESS EVERETT: “The last time Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer met with Donald Trump it was an unequivocal disaster, culminating in the longest government shutdown in history. … [T]he White House meeting Tuesday morning is likely to reveal whether anything at all can get done in Washington over the next 18 months.” POLITICO

— One key question: Will Trump put the meeting on camera? Caygle and Everett quote Pelosi telling fellow Democrats, “I hope he has learned his lesson” not to televise it, given what happened before. For now, the White House is saying it will be “closed press.”

BREAKING LATE: “Trump sues Deutsche Bank, Capital One to block House subpoenas”

BARR FIGHT — House Democrats are still wrangling with Attorney General BILL BARR over the format of his scheduled hearing before JERRY NADLER’S Judiciary Committee. The status as of last night, via Darren Samuelsohn and Andrew Desiderio:

“The standoff took its latest turn Monday when the Judiciary Committee formally announced plans to hold a Wednesday morning vote that would authorize the panel’s Democratic and GOP counsels to split an hour of additional questioning about the special counsel’s findings on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible obstruction of justice by Trump.

“DOJ officials have objected to committee staff questioning Barr in public about the Mueller report, setting the stage for an explosive hearing Thursday. Democrats have threatened to issue a subpoena if Barr refuses to show up on Thursday.”

— NADLER’S message for BARR: “He is supposed to show up on Thursday. And we will take whatever action to take if he doesn’t.” POLITICO

LINDSEY GONE WILD … CNN’S MANU RAJU and ALEX ROGERS: “Graham calls Democrats ‘political hacks,’ says Trump should fight their subpoenas ‘like hell’”

Good Tuesday morning. Blake Hounshell here with Daniel Lippman, filling in for Jake and Anna, who are at the Milken Institute conference in Los Angeles.

SPOTTED AT MILKEN: Acting White House chief of staff MICK MULVANEY at Jean Georges at the Waldorf in Beverly Hills. He’s sitting down with Maria Bartiromo at the conference. … JARED KUSHNER at the Aqua Star Pool at the Beverly Hilton. Monday night’s pop-up Milken newsletter from Ben White and Zach Warmbrodt

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar. Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi are offering more great tasting choices than ever before with less sugar or no sugar at all, smaller portion sizes, clear calorie labels and reminders to Think Balance.

2020 WATCH — Biden tears into Trump at Pittsburgh campaign kickoff,” by Marc Caputo: “From the atmospherics of his first campaign rally to the substance of his speech, the former vice president delivered a carefully calibrated message: while his rivals are chasing the Democratic nomination, Biden plans to pursue a mission focused on Donald Trump.” POLITICO

— POLITICO/Morning Consult poll: “Biden gets 6-point launch bounce”

BIDEN talks ANITA HILL on ABC’s “Good Morning America”: “I believed her from the very beginning. … As the committee chairman, I take responsibility that she did not get treated well.” GMA

— PETE BUTTIGIEG dined at Sylvia’s in Harlem on Monday with Rev. Al Sharpton — a campaign ritual for Democratic presidential aspirants. The candidate ate macaroni and cheese, fried chicken and collard greens; the reverend had dry toast. AP

— Buttigieg is struggling with African Americans; a recent Monmouth poll put him at just 2% with non-white voters. But Sharpton said Buttigieg was “very well received” at Sylvia’s.

HMM … “As security officials prepare for Russian attack on 2020 presidential race, Trump and aides play down threat,” by Josh Dawsey, Ellen Nakashima and Shane Harris: “In two meetings in the White House in recent months, Trump said repeatedly that Russia’s efforts didn’t change a single vote, even though his advisers have never suggested that they did, and he continually insisted that the campaign was not ‘hacked,’ according to people who were present or were briefed about the meetings.” WaPo

IMMIGRATION LATEST — “Trump calls for changes to toughen path to asylum,” by Ted Hesson and Wesley Morgan: “In a memo issued Monday evening, Trump ordered the development of regulations to bar certain asylum seekers from obtaining work authorization, impose fees on applications, speed up court decisions and limit access to other forms of relief. …

Shelby says it’s early in the process, but he’s also concerned about Moore’s writings, notes his wife is a professor. Murkowski says she knows about stuff that has come out but needs to look at it closely.”

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar.

OVAL OFFICE SCENE — from Monday’s pooler, David Smith of The Guardian: “POTUS read from a prepared text on his desk, describing how the [women’s NCAA basketball] championship was won, and praised [Baylor] head coach Kim Mulkey. He asked: ‘Would you like to work at the White House, by any chance?’ She replied quickly: ‘No.’

“POTUS talked about the prestige of the Oval Office and how even ‘strong, tough people start crying’ when they visit. Congressman Louie Gohmert asked: ‘Was that Hillary?’ There was laughter.”

WHAT THEY’RE READING IN WISCONSIN — “Foxconn Tore Up a Small Town to Build a Big Factory—Then Retreated,” by WSJ’s Valerie Bauerlein:“President Trump and Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou hatched the factory plan in 2017, and both attended last summer’s gold-shovel groundbreaking in Mount Pleasant, 20 miles south of Milwaukee.

“As of Dec. 31, the Taiwanese manufacturing giant, famous as an Apple Inc. supplier, had spent only $99 million, 1% of its pledged investment, according to its latest state filings. The company projected as many as 2,080 in-state employees by the end of 2019 but had fewer than 200 at last year’s end, state filings show. The village is still awaiting factory building plans for review. Locals said Foxconn contractors have recently been scarce on the site.” WSJ

MONMOUTH POLL: “Only 12% of Americans say that their family has benefited a great deal from recent growth in the U.S. economy and another 31% say they have received some benefit from the economic upturn. A majority, though, say they have been helped either not much (27%) or not at all (27%) from the nation’s macroeconomic growth.” MonmouthPDF

GRADING TRUMP — “Trump’s Foreign Policies Are Better Than They Seem,” by former Ambassador Robert Blackwill for the Council on Foreign Relations: “The grades for President Trump’s foreign policies just past the halfway point in his term are: China (B+), North Korea (B), Syria (B+), Saudi Arabia (B+), Israel (B), Iran (C), Afghanistan (B+), India (B+), Venezuela (B+), and trade (C); against his grades for climate (F), European security (D), Russia (F), policy process (F), character (F), American values (F), U.S. alliances and deterrence (F), and policy implementation (D).

“This report … gives him an overall foreign policy grade of D+, a substantially higher mark for his foreign policies than found on the Sunday talk shows, in the editorial pages of the New York Times and Washington Post, or among many U.S. national security experts.”

“Over the last several months, the sources said, Prince has sought investment and political support for such an operation from influential Trump supporters and wealthy Venezuelan exiles. In private meetings in the United States and Europe, Prince sketched out a plan to field up to 5,000 soldiers-for-hire on behalf of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido.” Reuters

VALLEY TALK — “Uber and Lyft stop accepting new drivers in New York City,” by Dana Rubinstein: “The move suggests New York City’s new driver pay regulations are having some of their desired effect, by restricting the growth of the driver pool and limiting what many driver advocates characterize as an over-saturated market.

“The wage regulations that went into effect Feb. 1 use a novel approach to ensure drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft earn at least $17.22 an hour after expenses. The rules penalize companies for running too many cars without passengers on city streets. The higher a company’s utilization rate, the less it has to pay drivers to meet the new wage floor requirement.” POLITICO

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies—Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi—are working hard to support families as they reduce the sugar in their diets. That means offering more great tasting options with less sugar or no sugar at all, putting clear calorie labels on every product and working with public health organizations and other national and local partners to build stronger, healthier communities. With more choices, smaller portions and less sugar, America’s families can find the balance that’s right for them.

Joe Biden Holds First Rally
Presidential candidate Joe Biden kicked off his campaign yesterday by holding his first public rally in Pennsylvania, part of the former “blue wall” of rust belt states Democrats will need to win back from President Trump to prevent his reelection in 2020. Biden mostly underscored the themes of his announcement video, saying that the country is “in a fight for its soul” and casting Trump as a dangerous aberration who “abuse[s] the power of the office.”

But he also sounded some old-school Democratic notes, like announcing that he was not going to apologize for being a “union man.” But something he has felt the need to apologize for is the way he ran the Senate hearing in 1991, at which Anita Hill testified that then-nominee for the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas had sexually harassed her.

But few in the media are giving the Hill testimony the skeptical eye it deserves – and received from Americans at the time. From Mollie Hemingway:

“The issue is important, as the media and other partisans rewrite the historical record about Hill and her accusations. The widely watched hearings revealed inaccuracies in Hill’s various versions of events and ended with 58 percent of Americans believing Thomas and only 24 percent believing Hill. There was no gap between the sexes in the results. In the intervening years, activists have relentlessly attempted to change the narrative, writing fan fiction about Hill, bestowing honors on her, and asserting that her disputed allegations were credible.”

This is Your Brain on Intersectional Theory
Intrepid Federalist publisher Ben Domenech braved the depths of wokedom this weekend to bring us his review of the National Antiracist Book Festival, hosted by the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University.

“Attendees exuded a mix of fashionable wokeness. A woman with a Luis Vuitton bag and $800 Gucci sneakers dutifully took notes as DeRay McKesson spoke in his trademark Patagonia puffy vest, deploying a series of lines and catchphrases that seemed less tied to the topic of the panel (“On White Supremacy”) and more about his personal priorities, such as explaining Brett Kavanaugh’s badness to his aunt…

Why is all this happening? Because it is a mechanism for seizing power by destroying the enemy narrative, and the enemy in this case is the United States of America. It advances an argument against Frederick Douglass, who said ‘The Constitution is a glorious liberty document.’ And it all started at the moment Democrats started telling themselves they no longer needed the votes of poor white people. Interesting coincidence…

The white gaze dominates, and only the wokest among us can don the mantle of antiracism. It comes with a book bag if you buy three.”

Fashion Moment of the Week
You may have noticed that Erielle’s beauty and makeup suggestions have curiously disappeared. That’s because Erielle is busy killing a law school final this morning (wish her luck) so you’re stuck with me and my fashion opinions a bit early this week, since I know next to nothing about makeup.

It’s been a while since I did a Rent the Runway roundup for you guys (apologies to those deeply offended by my use of gendered language), so I thought I’d send some curated spring selections your way.
Go for an easy-wearing trend that’ll take you straight through to summer with safari-style day dresses like this army green zip-up from Derek Lam or this linen khaki number with cool features like front buttons, pockets, and doubled-up straps.  LOL you thought you weren’t going to get midi dresses? I’m still obsessedwith midi dresses. This Hunter Bell one kicks it up a notch with an eye-watering orange hue and a leather gathered side detail. If you prefer to go all the way to maxi, this byTiMo floral dress is insanely flattering and comfortable. Tired of dresses and into the 80s power vibe? Give it a feminine twist with this pale pink blazer that I plan on wearing with white jeans, darn the summer white rules! Or this powder blue beauty of a suit from Robert Rodriguez.  Speaking of pink, this over-the-top bustier blouse from ADEAM would go perfectly with a pleated skirt and kitten heels. Finally, if you want to command a room, this one-shouldered mermaid party dress in leopard print from super-trendy designer Jonathan Simkhai will definitely do the job.
I’ve been encouraging everyone who will listen to try out Rent the Runway’s unlimited subscription, which allows you to keep items at home for as long as you want before returning them for something new, for years, but they’ve recently returned my previously-unrequited love by making me an RTR Insider. So now I have a special discount code to give you all! Use ISTEP50 for 50% off your first month.

SCOTT RASMUSSEN

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Senator Bernie Sanders last week suggested that the Boston Marathon Bomber should be allowed to vote even while imprisoned. Just 15% of voters agree that people in prison for violent crimes should be allowed to vote.In a recent column, I noted that many Democratic presidential contenders are aggressively advocating policies with very limited public support (20% or less). These 20-percenters are boosting President Trump’s hopes for re-election.The latest ScottRasmussen.com survey did find that 65% support allowing convicted felons to vote after they have served their time. And, 49% believe people imprisoned for “minor” crimes should be allowed to vote.Additionally, 11% believe illegal immigrants should be allowed to vote. The public is evenly divided as to whether those who can’t read or write English should have the right to vote: 42% say yes and 39% no. There is also a divide about American citizens living permanently in other countries: 42% say they should be allowed to vote and 41% disagree.Joe Biden is enjoying a bounce after formally entering the race for the White House last week. The former Vice President now holds a 33% to 16% lead over his nearest rival–Bernie Sanders. Senator Elizabeth Warren is a distant third at 6%. Biden also enjoys a massive and growing advantage in terms of Social Media Support. The data also highlights how little attention many Americans are paying to the race at this time. Mayor Pete Buttigieg has enjoyed strong social media support and positive media coverage in recent weeks. However, half of all Democrats (50%) have either never heard of him or don’t know enough to form an opinion. Forty percent (40%) have a favorable opinion of “Mayor Pete” while 10% hold an unfavorable view.On the GOP side, President Trump leads former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld by a 75% to 7% margin. Social media chatter about the president remains a bit more negative than positive. At this time, the topics being discussed by supporters and opponents are quite different. Finally, today’s Number of the Day notes that only 18% of voters want to eliminate private health insurance companies.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott     Stay Informed Up To The Minute and Share ContentDeeper CurrentsScott Rasmussen offers his personal insight, analysis, and opinion on current political races, issues, and controversy. IN THE MAW OF WOKENESS
The first thing I saw at the first National Antiracist Book Festival was a white college kid with a disappointing tuft of an attempted goatee wearing a Colin Kaepernick shirt. I thought about telling him that I was sitting on a plane across from Kaepernick a week earlier – I remain a fan of his play style, and have been ever since he was running the spread at Nevada – and was disappointed when the former quarterback whose corporate Nike-backed mantra is “Believe in Something Even If It Means Sacrificing Everything” declined to give a mild-mannered old lady who humbly requested it an autograph. You should never meet your heroes.

MEET THE PRESS

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

FIRST READ: The presidential race is getting all the oxygen. But don’t sleep on the Senate.

For all of the focus on the 2020 Dem presidential race and the attention on the candidates’ policy proposals, Stacey Abrams’ announcement that she’s a no-go for the Senate underscores an important reality for the presidential hopefuls.

Without control of the U.S. Senate – and with Mitch McConnell in charge – it’s a legitimate question whether a Democratic president in 2021 can get his/her cabinet and court picks confirmed.

Let alone pass Medicare for All. Or an ambitious climate plan. Or tax hikes on the wealthy.

Here’s the math: With the GOP holding a 53-47 advantage right now, Democrats must pick up a net of three Senate seats to win control of the chamber if they win the White House (with the vice president getting to break 50-50 ties).

And here’s the map: GOP Sen. Cory Gardner is vulnerable in Colorado; Democrats have recruited Mark Kelly to run against GOP Sen. Martha McSally in Arizona; but Dem Sen. Doug Jones is going to have a challenge hanging on in Alabama in a presidential year.

So assuming Dem wins in Arizona and Colorado – as well as a loss in Alabama – Democrats have to beat  Susan Collins – plus flip one of Georgia, North Carolina, Iowa, Kentucky or Texas.

It’s doable. But it’s also daunting.

And Georgia looks more difficult without Abrams running.

Now, it’s still early. National Democrats believe the pace of the presidential race is skewing the perspective of Senate recruiting.

After all, Jacky Rosen didn’t announce her Nevada Senate until July 2017. And Kyrsten Sinema didn’t announce until September 2017.

But the challenging Senate map should be an important question for every 2020 Democratic presidential candidate: What can you legitimately get done as president if your party doesn’t control the Senate in 2021?

And just as important: With that challenging Senate map, why are you running for president instead of for the Senate?

Biden’s bump

He’s still a vulnerable frontrunner, but Joe Biden has gotten a nice bump after his announcement in the early national polls.

A CNN poll conducted after his announcement has him at 39 percent – followed by Bernie Sanders at 15 percent, Elizabeth Warren at 8 percent, Pete Buttigieg at 7 percent, Beto O’Rourke at 6 percent and Kamala Harris at 5 percent.

And a new national online Morning Consult poll has Biden at 36 percent, Sanders at 22 percent, Warren at 9 percent, Buttigieg at 8 percent, Harris at 7 percent and O’Rourke at 5 percent.

But remember: It’s never easy being the early polling frontrunner. Ask Rudy Giuliani and Hillary in 2008. Or Jeb Bush in 2016.

2020 Vision: Begun the contrast war has

The gloves haven’t quite come off in the 2020 Democratic presidential race.

But it’s starting to get chippy as the candidates contrast their records with one another.

Here was Sanders on Biden in a CNN interview last night:

“But I think when people take a look at my record versus Vice President Biden’s record — I helped lead the fight against (North American Free Trade Agreement); he voted for NAFTA.”

“I helped lead the fight against (permanent normal trade relations) with China; he voted for it. I strongly opposed the Trans-Pacific Partnership; he supported it. I voted against the war in Iraq; he voted for it.”

And here was Jay Inslee’s campaign reacting to Beto O’Rourke’s $5 trillion plan to combat climate change:

“Beto O’Rourke will need to answer why he did not lead on climate change in Congress and why he voted on the side of oil companies to open up offshore drilling.”

On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden makes his first campaign stop in Iowa, hitting Cedar Rapids and Dubuque… Kamala Harris holds a roundtable on increasing teacher pay in South Carolina… Beto O’Rourke remains in California, holding a town hall in San Diego… Pete Buttigieg raises money in Massachusetts… And John Delaney gives a foreign-policy speech in DC.

Trumps sue to stop bank subpoenas

“President Donald Trump and several members of his family sued Deutsche Bank and Capital One on Monday seeking to prevent them from responding to congressional subpoenas for information about the president’s finances,” NBC News reports.

“The House Intelligence and Financial Services committees have issued subpoenas to several banks as part of their investigations of alleged foreign influence on U.S. elections.”

This is a reminder of what Team Trump does. And it also raises the question again: What are they hiding?

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… just 12 percent

Just 12 percent.

That’s the share of Americans who say their family has personally benefited a great deal from the growing economy, according to a new poll from Monmouth University.

Even as the president touts the low unemployment rate and booming stock market, a majority of Americans (54 percent) say they have not been helped by the economic climate much (27 percent) or at all (27 percent.)

It’s a dichotomy Joe Biden mentioned yesterday in his opening campaign appeal to blue-collar workers.

“The stock market is roaring, but you don’t feel it. There was a $2 trillion tax cut, did you feel it? Did you get anything from it?” he said. “No! Of course not.”

THE LID: Can’t buy love

Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we looked at why the booming economy isn’t matching up to a strong approval rating for the president.

AOC DIGS IN: Ocasio-Cortez Says It’s ‘A Myth’ that Veterans’ Healthcare System is ‘Broken’ Controversial Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doubled-down on her recent claims that the Veterans’ Affairs healthcare system “ain’t broke” Monday; saying it’s “a myth” that the VA hospitals “are broken.”

“You might have heard Fox News talking about it,” Ocasio-Cortez said, “because there is a myth that all VAs everywhere are broken.”

“If we can starve them of budgets and make sure they can’t do their job, then we can say the whole system should be thrown away,” she said while speaking with supporters in New York City. “I’m not going to back down from protecting the VA…”
