DAILY SIGNAL

Apr 29, 2019   Good morning from Washington, where insider reporter Jake Sherman joins Rob Bluey and Virginia Allen on the podcast to share the behind-the-scenes perspective on President Trump’s time in office. Does what happen in the pews Sunday affect how Americans think about issues the rest of the week? Daniel Davis looks at the seeming disconnect between Americans’ beliefs and their politics. Plus: Courtney Joyner shares why she doesn’t agree with her more liberal peers on socialism, and Ken McIntyre rounds up your thoughts on the Mueller report.       Commentary Trump Just Ditched a UN Arms Treaty, and He Was Right to Do It The treaty is not a gun grab, but it is precisely what the White House says it is: a platform that gun control activists could potentially do great damage with. More Commentary America Is Still Highly Religious. So Why Do We Keep Liberalizing? Although only 11% of Western Europeans say religion is very important in their lives, 53% of Americans say it is for them. More Commentary I’m a College Student. Here’s Why I Oppose Socialism. American college students have the luxury of viewing the world from an ivory tower, combating injustice through thought experiments. More Analysis The Inside Story of Trump’s First 2 Years in Washington “We see now that the Democrats are considering using penalties, fiscal penalties, monetary penalties for people who don’t testify to their liking or fork over documents. I think we’re about to see a major sea change in Congress’ power,” says Politico’s Jake Sherman, author of “The Hill to Die On.” More Commentary I Was Born at 29 Weeks. That’s Why I’m Pro-Life. On March 29, 1997, my parents were driving through Minnesota when my mom suddenly began having contractions. Immediately, they drove to the hospital, and two days later I was born—11 weeks early. More Commentary We Hear You: What the Mueller Report Actually Says “Mueller’s investigation was predicated on the possibility (shown to be a total hoax) of ‘collusion.’ How would there even be obstruction of justice without an underlying crime?” writes C.K. Andersen. More           The Daily Signal is brought to you by more than half a million members of The Heritage Foundation.

Good and Evil
On Saturday, another tragic event at a place of worship occurred. At the Chabad of Powar Synagogue outside of San Diego, California, a 19 year-old opened fire in the last moments of Passover, shooting and killing one woman and injuring three others, including the synagogue’s rabbi. The shooter was caught, partly thanks to an off-duty Border Patrol agent who was at the service and returned fire to stop the shooter’s vehicle. From the New York Post:

“[The shooter’s] exit from the building were not clear, although Sheriff Bill Gore said the shooter may have fled because his gun malfunctioned.

A San Diego police officer was en route to the shooting scene when he overheard a California Highway Patrol radio dispatch “of a suspect who had called into CHP to report that he was just involved in this shooting and his location,” Police Chief David Nisleit recounted.

“The officer was actually on the freeway and he clearly saw the suspect in his vehicle. The suspect pulled over and jumped out of his car with his hands up and was immediately taken into custody,” Nisleit said.”

Other details were reported on Sunday, including how Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein “was trying to calm worshippers and the gunman” after he was shot. On Sunday, he spoke about a call he received from President Trump: “He shared with me condolences on behalf of the United States of America. We spoke about the moment of silence. And he spoke about his love of peace and Judaism and Israel. He was just so comforting, I’m really grateful to our president for taking the time and share with us his comfort and consolation.”

There’s also this account from witness Oscar Stewart who charged the shooter before he dropped his gun and ran out.

Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who died of her injuries, is believed to have thrown herself in front of the rabbi. Several performed CPR on her immediately after the shooting, including her husband who didn’t know at the time that it was his wife who was shot. From Fox News:

“The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Gilbert-Kaye’s husband, a physician, was in the synagogue when the gunshots started.

Worshippers called to him to help victims and he began to do CPR on one until he realized it was his wife, Dr. Roneet Lev told the paper.

The husband then fainted.

Lev said Gilbert-Kaye had gone to the synagogue near San Diego to offer the Jewish prayer for the dead — known as the “Kaddish” for her mother, who recently passed away, the paper reported.

“God picked her to die to send a message because she’s such an incredible person,” Lev said. “He took her for a higher purpose to send this message to fight anti-Semitism.”

Developing Story at Baltimore Church
On Sunday evening, reports came in that several people were shot, one person died and six injured, at a cookout at Perkins Square Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. At BRIGHT’s scheduled publication time, no additional details were available.

NYT ‘Deeply Sorry’ for Publishing Anti-Semitic Cartoon
On Saturday morning, the New York Times’ international edition published a cartoon that showed a blind Donald Trump being led by a dog that was supposed to represent Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. After people from all political sides pointed out the anti-semitic cartoon, the supposed “paper of record” issued this apology and note that will appear in today’s print edition. The American Jewish Committee responded, “Apology not accepted. How many New York Times editors looked at a cartoon that would not have looked out of place on a white supremacist website and thought it met the paper’s editorial standards? What does this say about your processes or your decision makers? How are you fixing it?”

There was even agreement between the White House and CNN:

“The cartoon and the initial lack of apology was also criticized by White House counselor Kellyanne Conway in an appearance on “State of the Union” on CNN on Sunday.

“This anti-Semitic cartoon which I’m not even going to describe the particulars because it is so odious and offensive, they didn’t even apologize for it,” she said Sunday morning ahead of the Times’ second statement. “Apologies usually include words like regret, sorry and apologize. They didn’t do that.” CNN host Jake Tapper agreed with her statement.”

In a second tweet posted hours later, the Times said they were reviewing the “faulty process” that allowed the cartoon to be included.

Rewriting Joe Biden’s History
It’s only a matter of time before we see Biden debating Biden ads. The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway writes about the recent revisionist history on Biden and Anita Hill:

“Former vice president Joe Biden repeatedly said on The View on Friday that he believed Anita Hill from the moment he heard her tale of sexual harassment by Clarence Thomas. But he previously told Sen. Arlen Specter that it was clear her testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee included lies. “Not only didn’t I vote for Clarence Thomas, I believed her from the beginning. I was against Clarence Thomas, I did everything in my power to defeat Clarence Thomas and he won by the smallest margin anyone ever won going on the Supreme Court,” Biden told “The View’s” Joy Behar. But in 1998, Biden admitted to Specter that “It was clear to me from the way she was answering the questions, [Hill] was lying” about a key part of her testimony. The exchange was published in Specter’s 2000 memoir, “Passion for Truth: From Finding JFK’s Single Bullet to Questioning Anita Hill to Impeaching Clinton.” The issue is important, as the media and other partisans rewrite the historical record about Hill and her accusations. The widely watched hearings revealed inaccuracies in Hill’s various versions of events and ended with 58 percent of Americans believing Thomas and only 24 percent believing Hill. There was no gap between the sexes in the results. In the intervening years, activists have relentlessly attempted to change the narrative, writing fan fiction about Hill, bestowing honors on her, and asserting that her disputed allegations were credible. On “The View,” Biden claimed, “If you go back and look at what I said and didn’t say, I don’t think I treated her badly. I took on her opposition. What I couldn’t figure out how to do — and we still haven’t figured it out – how do you stop people from asking inflammatory questions?”

A Case of the Mondays

Happy belated birthday to First Lady Melania Trump! On April 26, she celebrated her birthday with President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and his wife, Akie Abe. From John Binder’s Fashion Notes:

“Mrs. Trump was white hot on Friday in a cap sleeve lace sheath dress by American brand Lela Rose. The dress retails for about $1,700 and is made entirely in the United States.

As a salute to Japan, Mrs. Trump chose a pair of sky-high red metallic “So Kate” pointed stilettos by Christian Louboutin to go with the body-conscious dress. The famous Louboutin red soles nearly blended into the red carpet outside the White House as Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Abe embraced each other.”

With the wedding season approaching, I thought I’d scour the internet for some budget-friendly versions of this dress since it would make a great bridal shower or rehearsal dinner look. Here are a few options:

Ronni Nicole Short Sleeve Medallion Lace Sheath Dress from JC Penney, $39.99 (!)

White Lace Sheath Dress with Scalloped Hem and Keyhole Back from Luvenza, $189.99

Jayce Lace Sheath Cocktail Dress from Nordstrom, $100.00

Stiletto Metallic Party Shoes from TBDress, $65.93

Jessica Simpson Cassani Pumps from Macy’s, $62.30 (with promo code FRIEND)

Red Slingbacks from Amazon (for high heel-challenged women like me), $46.99

By the way, the no-fun-media didn’t miss an opportunity to take a swipe at the First Lady calling the White House’s tweet celebrating her birthday “bizarre.”

🙄

Clearly they’re not in on the joke — no matter what, she’s cool and calm.

Mondays with Melania is a weekly feature that highlights what the First Lady is doing and wearing.

THE CITIZENSHIP QUESTION CONTROVERSY
Are you a citizen? Can the government ask? http://vlt.tc/3met “The Trump administration wants the question reintroduced — it was asked of every household until 1950 — in order for the Justice Department to more effectively enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, the provision that protects minority electoral opportunities. DOJ asserts that its lawyers need to have geographically detailed household information that includes citizenship status as well as other data such race and ethnicity. Currently, the only source of citizenship data is an annual estimate conducted by the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.”

A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that 39% disagree and 25% are not sure. Not surprisingly, there is a huge partisan divide on this question. Republicans tend to believe there was illegal spying while Democrats say no. Independent voters are evenly divided. The survey also found that 45% believe the FBI investigation of the Trump campaign was motivated primarily by political considerations. Thirty-six percent (36%) believe national security concerns drove the investigation.Just 34% of voters are aware that Hillary Clinton’s campaign paid for the secret dossier used by the FBI to obtain search warrants on Trump campaign officials. REAL CLEAR POLITICS

04/29/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Biden and Unions; Border Solutions; Olds School By Carl M. Cannon on Apr 29, 2019 08:16 am
Good morning, it’s Monday, April 29, 2019. Fifteen years ago today, the last Oldsmobile rolled off the assembly line in Lansing, Mich. That last car, an Alero sedan, was signed by the workers on the line and shipped to Lansing’s R.E. Olds Transportation Museum. For Olds lovers, April 29, 2004 was a sorrowful day. Auto aficionados tended to blame General Motors — the car company later owned for time by the Obama administration Treasury Department — just as the current president blames GM for closing a factory near Youngstown, Ohio, that made compact cars and employed 1,700 people. But GM produced Oldsmobiles at a profit for the better part of a century, and the demise of the brand served as a reminder that cutting-edge technology is not a national birthright. As I’ve written in this space previously, innovation is a trait that must be refreshed with each generation. In a global economy, that is no small challenge. I’ll have a further word on Oldsmobile, and man who started the car line, in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Biden-Union Bond May Slacken in the Age of Trump. Phil Wegmann explores the former VP’s efforts to maximize old loyalties while also courting blue-collar workers in right-to-work states. Border Brawl: Kobach & Trump vs. Cloward & Piven. Frank Miele hails two changes — one actual and one potential — in the immigration system. Does Biden’s Candidacy Suggest #MeToo Impact Is Waning? Kalev Leetaru has this analysis of media coverage of the presidential frontrunner’s history of inappropriate touching. HASC Chairman Critiques the Armed Services. In RealClearDefense, Shak Hill highlights a letter from Rep. Adam Smith that has stirred a hornet’s nest of counter-criticism. U.S. Energy’s Growing Role on the Global Stage. In RealClearEnergy, James Marks lays out how American oil and gas production is changing the global dynamic. Tim Cook on How to Limit Your Phone Use. In RealClearLife, Kirk Miller reports on advice the Apple CEO recently gave. * * * In the latter part of the 19th century, a worldwide race was taking place to develop an alternative to the horse and carriage. German and French inventors had been tinkering with mechanized designs since the early 1860s. In the 1880s, the pace of innovation picked up on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. It was led by dreamers with surnames still familiar to us — Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz in Germany, Henry Ford and Ransom Eli Olds in the U.S. — while others have been lost in the mists of memory. These forgotten pioneers include tinkerers and daredevils such as Charles and Frank Duryea of Springfield, Mass., along with the eponymous-sounding J.W. Carhart, an inventor and Methodist minister from Wisconsin. The earliest engines were powered by steam generated by gasoline. Ransom Olds, a 22-year-old Ohio native, built one in his father’s shop around 1886. In 1897, he incorporated the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in Lansing and produced four cars. In 1899, he relocated to Detroit, lined up some venture capital, and by 1901 produced 425 models of the Curved Dash Oldsmobile Runabouts. From the start, the internal combustion engine was more than a commercial breakthrough. It was a cultural phenomenon as well. The new machines they powered not only invoked the promise of the 20th century, they also symbolized freedom itself. Freedom from the yoke of the farm, freedom to see the country, freedom to go courting — and freedom to escape the binds of society. Seventy years before Bruce Springsteen urged “Wendy” to wrap her legs “round these velvet rims” and “strap your hands cross my engines,” turn-of-the-century crooner Billy Murray sang “In My Merry Oldsmobile.” The chorus went like this: Come away with me, Lucille
In my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we’ll fly
Auto-mobubbling, you and I
To the church we’ll swiftly steal

In my merry Oldsmobile.
But if it took American know-how and American imagination to mass produce and mass market the automobile — and Ransom Olds was doing it before Henry Ford — the early history of the Olds Motor Vehicle Company revealed two other truths about capitalism. The first is that it hardly operates on the Golden Rule. On the contrary, the man with the gold makes the rules. Ransom Olds was forced out of his own company by his investors, who turned around and sold their stake to General Motors before the company was a decade old. A second historical lesson is that superior technology is not always identifiable at the beginning. In 1899 and 1900, Ransom built electric cars, as did several other automotive pioneers. Petroleum was cheap, though, and its supply seemingly inexhaustible, so the electric car was phased out. They were brought back many years later by a company launched by Kiichiro Toyoda, who visited the United States in 1929 to study the auto industry. His motto? “Before you say something can’t be done, try it.”  Carl M. Cannon

LEGAL INSURRECTION

Share This       New ‘Common Language Guide’ Divides Students at Amherst College Student Protesters at Yale Call for Police to be Disarmed American University Students Unimpressed With New Mandatory Diversity Course   William Jacobson: “Former Obama Spokeswoman: Elizabeth Warren ungrateful, owes Joe Biden for her political career — “Elizabeth Warren would be a beloved Harvard Law Professor not a presidential candidate” if Obama and Biden had not helped her on launching consumer financial protection bureau” Kemberlee Kaye: “This is a crazy case. A Massachusetts judge was indicted for obstruction of justice based on allegations she helped an illegal immigrant sneak out the back of the courthouse when ICE showed up to arrest him.” Mary Chastain: “I saw Endgame this weekend. It was good, but not great. Bring your tissues!” Leslie Eastman: “It was Divine Mercy Sunday, and rarely have I felt more need for it.  I am sick at heart over the synagogue shooting this weekend, which occurred in a neighborhood I know.  Prayers for the victims and their families, especially Lori Kaye, who protected the rabbi from the shooter and lost her life as a result. Our church had a special prayer for her and the Chabad of Poway…and took up a special collection for Notre Dame as well.” David Gerstman: “The New York Times published an anti-Semitic cartoon, depicting a Bibi-faced dog leading a blind President Trump. The next day a gunman opened fire in a California synagogue, killing one and injuring several others. Like the Pittsburgh shooter, this suspect detested Trump for being too pro-Israel. Unsure if The New York Times will make the connection between the hate it promoted, and the violence that ensued.” Vijeta Uniyal: “Germany’s center-right Free Democratic Party (FDP) has introduced a bill to end government support for anti-Israel BDS Movement. The proposed legislation seeks a ban on state funding going to organizations involved in boycott and delegitimization campaign against Israel.”                   Legal Insurrection Foundation is a Rhode Island tax-exempt corporation established exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code to educate and inform the public on legal, historical, economic, academic, and cultural issues related to the Constitution, liberty, and world events. MEET THE PRESS

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann FIRST READ: Assessing Biden’s first 96 hours as a candidate Joe Biden’s first 96 hours as a candidate sums up his place right now in the 2020 Democratic field.

He’s the frontrunner – but a vulnerable one.

1. Biden reported raising $6.3 million in his first 24 hours, besting Beto O’Rourke’s $6.1 million mark and Bernie Sanders’ $5.9 million.

But part of that haul (a reported $700,000) came from that high-roller fundraiser on Thursday, and the former vice president had four months to prepare for that initial fundraising burst.

2. A Washington Post/ABC poll released over the weekend showed him leading the pack (on an open-ended horserace question).

But the same poll found a majority of Democratic respondents – 54 percent – saying they had no preference.

3. In his first 96 hours, Biden’s racked up more notable endorsements than the Dem competition. And this morning, NBC’s Mike Memoli reports that Biden also received the nod from the International Association of Firefighters.

But the former vice president’s endorsement lead is a narrow one – and it comes mainly from Dem politicians from the Delaware/Pennsylvania region.

4. In his first sit-down interview since his announcement, Biden appeared on The View, taking on questions about touches that made women uncomfortable, and about his handling of Anita Hill.

He seemed to be more aware of the former (“I have to be more aware,” he said. “It’s my job to read”) than the latter (“I’m sorry she was treated the way she was treated.”)

Umm, he was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee during that Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearing.

Bottom line: 96 hours in, Biden looks more like John Kerry of 2004 (the slight frontrunner in a volatile Democratic field) than Al Gore of 2000 or Hillary Clinton of 2016.

In Pittsburgh this afternoon, the former vice president delivers his first speech as a 2020 candidate – on rebuilding the middle class. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid The latest in the subpoena wars Attorney General William Barr is threatening NOT to testify before the House Judiciary Committee this week, NBC’s Alex Moe and Allan Smith report.

At issue: Barr and his team appear opposed to Democratic and Republican committee lawyers – in addition to the lawmakers – asking him questions.

“Members of Congress should be the ones doing the questioning,” Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec told NBC News. “He remains happy to engage with members on their questions regarding the Mueller report.”

More from Moe and Smith: “On Sunday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said Barr would not ‘dictate the format of the Judiciary Committee,’ CNN reported.”

“The witness is not going to tell the committee how to conduct its hearing, period,” Nadler said, adding that if Barr does not appear on Thursday, his committee “will have to subpoena him, and we will have to use whatever means we can to enforce the subpoena.” REUTERS/Carlos Barria Rabbi who survived synagogue shooting speaks to MSNBC (and Trump) Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, whose synagogue and congregants were the victims of a mass shooting on Saturday, spoke on Kasie DC last night.

On the shooter: “Well what he needs to know, I want — everyone wants to know, hating Jews is hating humanity. We are all humans.”

On speaking to President Trump: “I was totally in awe. I am shocked to accept to receive a call from the White House… He was so gracious and generous with his words. Exceedingly comforting to me, to my community and he spoke to me like a friend, like a buddy and I didn’t realize I’m talking to the president of the United States of America.” 2020 Vision: Biden doesn’t look like the last Dem candidate FYI: Politico reports that Montana Gov. Steve Bullock just hired a new communications director and an Iowa hand.

In short, expect the Dem field to GROW heading into the first debate in June… On the campaign trail today: Biden delivers remarks on rebuilding the middle class in Pittsburgh at 3:30 pm ET… Beto O’Rourke continues to campaign in California… And Pete Buttigieg has lunch with Al Sharpton before appearing on The Daily Show. DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 54 percent 54 percent.

That’s the share of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents who say they don’t have a preference for a 2020 candidate yet, according to a new Washington Post/ABC poll.

That’s pretty much unchanged from a poll in January, when 56 percent declined to name one candidate that they currently support.  THE LID: Revolution vs. restoration Don’t miss the pod from Friday, when we noted the two distinct messages and policies coming from Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Tweet of the day: Remembering Dick Lugar ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss  Don’t miss this big look from NBC’s Alex Seitz-Wald and Adam Edelman on the making of Mayor Pete.

The International Association of Firefighters is formally backing Joe Biden.

White nationalist violence is becoming a top issue for 2020.

Three of the most influential women in progressive politics are launching a new organization to boost female lawmakers.  Thanks for reading.

PragerU: Who are the racists? Posted: 29 Apr 2019 04:42 AM PDT Evidence means very little to the left. It’s ironic that case after case, policy after policy clearly points to the Democratic Party being generally more racist than the Republican Party. Whether it’s affirmative action, reparations, or voter ID, Democrats continue to push racist ideas in defense of their proposals. Socialism would be the death of freedom of speech Posted: 28 Apr 2019 04:33 PM PDT Believe it or not, socialists believe in a variation of freedom of speech. The End of Capitalism? In an article published in The Washington Post, the author contemplates the end of capitalism and the chances of its survival, through the lenses of a California Congressman and one of his very ultra-wealthy constituents.

My issue with the author is not that the question of the end of capitalism is inappropriate, but that the author seems to be implicitly justifying its demise and endorsing the liberal rage against wealth…
