WASHINGTON FREE BEACON
THE DAILY SIGNAL
Jul 17, 2019 |
Good morning from Washington, where the left smears immigration officials for doing their jobs. And yet Californians are the victims of more crimes because local police release illegal immigrants rather than allow ICE to deport them, Fred Lucas reports. The president doesn’t understand how hurtful his “go back” comments are, Kay Coles James writes. On the podcast, Rachel Greszler explains why a $15 minimum wage is bad for us. Plus: Justin Bogie and Ben Paris on how the government wastes tens of billions in “improper payments.” On this date in 1955, Disneyland opens in Anaheim, California. |
Commentary Americans Are the Real Casualties of the Trump-‘Squad’ Showdown When President Trump said four members of Congress should “go back” to the “places from which they came,” he was wrong. His words conjured up unpleasant memories for so many black people like me and immigrants alike who have been targets of the “go back to your country” taunt throughout their lives. More News Murder, Rape, Assault, Burglary: 6 Examples of California’s Sanctuary Policies Leading to More Crimes Serious crimes could have been prevented if sanctuary jurisdictions had turned over those accused to federal immigration officials for deportation, a new report suggests. More News Deceased Navy Veteran, Jailed for Digging Ponds, Finally Gets His Name Cleared After being convicted, fined, and imprisoned under the Clean Water Act for digging ponds to protect his Montana home from forest fires, Joe Robertson gets his name cleared. More Commentary Improper Payments Are Costing Taxpayers a Fortune As Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., recently explained, the government annually wastes hundreds of billions in taxpayer dollars through “improper payments.” More Commentary Podcast: What’s Wrong With the $15 Minimum Wage? House Democrats are poised to pass a $15 minimum wage this week. But would it actually help workers? What effect would it have on the economy? Rachel Greszler, a labor expert at The Heritage Foundation, weighs in. More Commentary Things Haven’t Always Been This Way In 1954, I graduated from Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin High School, the city’s poorest school. During those days, there were no school policemen. Today, close to 400 police patrol Philadelphia schools. More Commentary Hiking the Minimum Wage Will Hurt, Not Help, Low-Income Americans Although a $15-an-hour minimum wage would lift some 1.3 million out of poverty, 1.3 million jobs would be lost in the mid-range scenario and 3.7 million jobs would be lost in the worst-case scenario. Within minutes of Tuesday night’s news that former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens died after a stroke at age 99, seemingly all of Washington had anecdotes to share about the man known for his dissents and independence, his love of baseball, and his faith in judicial oversight of executive power. Stevens joined the court in 1975 and served until his retirement in 2010. |
The House voted Tuesday to condemn President Trump’s “racist comments” over the weekend aimed at four female lawmakers, delivering for history an extraordinary repudiation of a sitting president approved by a vote of 240-187 despite strenuous objections from the White House and Republicans. Yet, only in Washington’s through-the-looking-glass climate could the Speaker of the House seek to publicly punish a president for bigoted tweets and find herself rebuked by the House parliamentarian for wielding the word “racist” on the House floor. Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s vocabulary prompted a parliamentary seesaw during which tempers flared, gavels fell and rulebooks were hastily consulted. “The words of the gentlewoman from California contain an accusation of racist behavior on the part of the president. As memorialized in Chapter 29, Section 65.6, characterizing an action as racist is not in order,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said. “The chair relies on the precedent of May 15, 1984, and finds that the words should not be used in debate,” he continued, citing the parliamentarian’s verdict (The Hill). By nightfall, Pelosi and her caucus pushed through a resolution of condemnation along party lines calling Trump to account for criticizing four freshman female members of Congress, all Democrats, by telling them to “go back” to their countries. The four lawmakers, all women of color and all staunch Trump foes, are citizens. One was born in Mogadishu, Somalia. Trump continued on Tuesday to defend his tweets and critiques of the progressive lawmakers while pummeling his detractors for a third day. “I don’t have a Racist bone in my body,” he tweeted. The Hill: House votes to condemn Trump. The Hill: The four Republicans who voted to condemn Trump’s tweets. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) came to Trump’s defense after days of silence, assessing that “the president is not a racist.” Donning the mantle of peacemaker while judging Trump’s actions with deference, McConnell recommended that official Washington calm down and move on. “I think the tone of all of this is not good for the country but it’s coming from all different ideological points of view. To single out any segment of this I think is a mistake,” he said. In prepared remarks, McConnell continued, “I think there’s a consensus that political rhetoric has really gotten way, way overheated all across the political spectrum.” “Lower all this incendiary rhetoric. Everyone should do it,” McConnell added (The Hill). The majority leader’s position serves as a defense against the push from Democrats to put a similar resolution of condemnation on the Senate floor. McConnell made it clear there will be no such vote. The president did not immediately take the majority leader’s advice to cease and desist. Nor did some Democrats in the House. Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) filed articles of impeachment against Trump on Tuesday night and wants to force a House vote in the near future (The Hill). CBS “This Morning”: Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), the lawmakers targeted by Trump in his comments, talked with Gayle King about a president who is “a bully,” airing at 7 a.m. ET. Reuters: Republican support for Trump following racially charged tweets rises slightly in new Reuters/Ipsos poll. |

LEADING THE DAY |
CONGRESS: Lawmakers are indicating that a
deal on a budget and to raise the debt ceiling could be coming down the
rails as they try to wrap up negotiations and strike a deal before the
House leaves Washington for the six-week August recess.
Leadership and administration officials say progress is
being made toward a breakthrough, although one still remains at large.
Two of the key figures, Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin
have continued negotiations over the phone throughout the past week,
but officials say details and key sticking points need to be ironed out,
including the level of non-defense spending that Democrats are pushing
for.
“They seem to me to be moving closer and closer together,” Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) said of Pelosi and Mnuchin.
Lawmakers on both sides agree. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a Senate GOP appropriator, said there was “cautious optimism” about a deal, while Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters that negotiations are “going quite well right now.”
Without a budget deal, Congress will need to find another
way to raise the debt ceiling, with Pelosi and McConnell indicating in
recent days that they have no interest in a stand alone vote if a budget
deal falls through before the recess. The pair’s aversion comes despite
Mnuchin’s push for one, noting that the government could run out of
funds in early September, putting more pressure on lawmakers to hammer
out a deal before the House leaves town next Friday.
One big obstacle to any deal has turned out to be funding
for veterans. Pelosi told Mnuchin in a recent letter that she wanted $9
billion in additional funds in fiscal 2020 and $13 billion in additional
funds in 2021 for the VA MISSION Act, which overhauled how the
department handles health care. Republican lawmakers want to pay for the
law under the budget caps, but Democrats worry that would force them to
make cuts to other programs in 2019 and 2020. Instead, they want to
ensure those payments don’t count toward the caps.
“There’s probably a way to get a deal done,” Shelby said about resolving the issue of funding for veterans (The Hill).
> Saudi Arabia: The House is poised to
approve resolutions on Wednesday blocking the president’s emergency arms
sales to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf allies.
The passage of the resolutions, which already cleared the
Senate last month, will set up a confrontation with the White House,
which has threatened to veto the measures. It would be Trump’s third
veto — and the second related to Saudi Arabia, underscoring the divide
between Trump and Congress on the Saudis (The Hill).
> Cybersecurity: Lawmakers are raising
concerns that the upcoming 2020 census could be open to possible
cyber-attacks because individuals can fill it out online for the first
time in history.
Top officials from the Government Accountability Office
(GAO) appeared at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
Committee hearing on Tuesday and sounded the alarm after adding the
Census Bureau to the GAO’s list of “high-risk programs” due to
cybersecurity and information technology shortfalls. The census can be
completed over the phone, in paper or online this time around (The Hill).
“Although the Bureau has taken initial steps to address
risk, additional actions are needed as these risks could adversely
impact the cost, quality, schedule, and security of the enumeration,” Nick Marinos, the director of information technology and cybersecurity at the GAO, and Robert Goldenkoff, the director of strategic issues at the GAO, said in their written testimony.
> Cryptocurrency: Facebook sought to
defend its plans for a new global cryptocurrency at a contentious
hearing on Tuesday as lawmakers aggressively blasted the project and
questioned whether the embattled company should be in charge of
launching such an ambitious venture. David Marcus, head of Calibra — the new Facebook subsidiary that will be partially responsible for its launch — assured lawmakers that the Libra coin will not launch until financial regulators are satisfied. But the testimony did little to quell concerns from bipartisan lawmakers on the Senate Banking Committee, many of whom delivered blistering condemnations of the company’s plans (The Hill). “[Facebook] moved fast and broke our political discourse, they broke journalism, they helped incite a genocide and they’re undermining our democracy,” Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), the ranking member of the committee, said during his opening remarks. “Now Facebook is asking people to trust them with their hard-earned paychecks.” The Washington Post: In meetings with federal regulators and discussions with Congress about its cryptocurrency ambitions, Facebook is paying a price because of Washington’s lack of trust. *** 2020 POLITICS & CAMPAIGNS: Campaign aides to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have become frustrated as the democratic socialist has seen his candidacy stall over the past month. They question polls and vent about news coverage of his campaign. While Sanders remains firmly in the top five of the 2020 field and his candidacy polls near the top in national and early state surveys, his second presidential bid has struggled to overcome an emerging narrative that his moment has passed. In the past month, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) have surpassed him in some polls and surged into the top tier of the Democratic primary pack. Sanders’s supporters believe polls don’t capture a young, enthusiastic base or the new voters they say Sanders is bringing into the fold. The campaign is turning its allegations of unfair media coverage into a rallying cry. The camp argues that media bias, focus on horse-race politics and outsize coverage about new candidates have led to a Bernie blackout that gives a false impression about the state of the race (The Hill). “Every time there is a story about how Bernie can’t win it fans the flame of our base and we get more donations and more volunteers,” said one Sanders campaign aide who is not authorized to speak on the record. Pollsters are skeptical of the charge, and Democratic strategists say it’s up to Sanders to change the course of his campaign if he wants to draw the kind of media attention he believes he deserves. Instead, they argue that he is a one-trick pony and needs to adapt instead of simply continuing to sell his anti-corporate message. “He’s almost like a greatest hits act,” said one Democratic operative. The Washington Post: Sanders toughens his critique of former Vice President Joe Biden, signaling more clashes ahead. The Wall Street Journal: Old election cash gives new life to some presidential candidates. Politico: Sen. Cory Booker, Julián Castro struggle to woo minority voters. |
© Getty Images > Fundraising: Democrats are becoming increasingly concerned about the financials of the 2020 campaign, as the president posted an eye-popping haul in the second fundraising quarter, leaving Democrats to wonder if they’ll be able to catch up after the primary wraps next year. The Democrats say there’s cause for concern simply by looking at Trump’s $108 million total in the last three months between his reelection bid and the Republican National Committee, a figure that’s more than four times as much as the top 2020 Democratic fundraiser during the second quarter, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg. “I know it’s still really early but if you take a look at what he’s been able to do in terms of fundraising, we’d be nuts not to worry,” one Democratic strategist acknowledged (The Hill). The New York Times: Trump sets the 2020 tone: Like 2016, only this time “the Squad” is here. > Kentucky Senate: National Democrats say they are not concerned with Amy McGrath in Kentucky despite chatter from within the state that other Democrats could primary her as they sense an opening after her up-and-down campaign rollout versus McConnell. McGrath, who raised $2.5 million in her first 24 hours, has come under fire after a lackluster first week, headlined by her flip-flop over whether she would have voted for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a matter of hours and her decision to back out of an interview with MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt on Sunday. The first-week stumbles have opened the door to a primary challenge, which some in the party, including Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Ky.), believe would be useful. Most recently, Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker (D) said that he is looking at a primary campaign, while Matt Jones, a sports radio personality in the state, has kept the door open for a possible bid. However, national Democrats are standing by McGrath despite the rocky week. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), chairwoman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), said she is not concerned, pointing to McGrath’s fundraising prowess as evidence of a strong bid. “Not at all,” Cortez Masto said when asked if there are any concerns. “It’s just the opposite. A lot of enthusiasm.” “People there need to do what they think is appropriate,” she said of potential challengers. “What I’ve seen is there’s a lot of enthusiasm about running against Mitch. We’ve seen with just the numbers alone with Amy McGrath and how much she’s raised.” As of Sunday, McGrath had raised $3.5 million, a figure that fell far short of expectations on the Republican side given her run against McConnell, who Democrats likely have more antipathy for than any Republican that isn’t the president. The Associated Press: Sen. Cory Gardner had good news for Colorado. But Trump had tweets. |
IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKES |
WHITE HOUSE & ADMINISTRATION: Mark Esper, Trump’s nominee to lead the Pentagon following James Mattis’s resignation in January, fielded tough questions on Tuesday from members of the Senate Armed Services Committee about Iran, Turkey, military operations and his ability to stand up to Trump if confirmed to be Defense secretary. The president and GOP leaders are anxious to schedule a confirmation vote in the full Senate for the former Army secretary before the August recess. The Hill: Esper endorsed returning to a diplomatic channel with Iran. The Hill: Esper praised Mattis, Trump and the National Defense Strategy. The Hill: Esper told Warren he would not pledge to recuse himself from Raytheon matters after working for the company before his government roles. The Hill: Trump says the United States will not sell Turkey U.S.-made F-35 fighters following Turkey’s decision to take delivery of a Russian missile defense system. The Associated Press: Esper testified that he recently told Turkey’s defense minister, “You can either have the S-400 or you can have the F-35. You cannot have both.” |
© Getty Images > Immigration: The administration is poised to roll out new details about the immigrants the administration wants to admit legally into the United States — those who would contribute economically rather than those who have family ties. Republican senators say they’re dubious there would be bipartisan support in Congress in the near term. The White House push for the new policy is spearheaded by Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner (The Washington Post). > Planned Parenthood: In the wake of a new administration rule that withdraws federal funds from Planned Parenthood and other reproductive services organizations, the Planned Parenthood board on Tuesday ousted Leana Wen, the organization’s president and a physician. She had been president since September (The Hill). |

And finally … It took a seasoned gator expert from Florida to nab “Chance the Snapper,” the wily young alligator living on the lam in a park lagoon in Chicago until he was outmaneuvered on Tuesday. The 5-foot-3-inch reptile attracted national headlines, had several Twitter accounts and his own Wikipedia page — and is now destined for new digs at a zoo or wildlife sanctuary. Gator wrangler Frank Robb of St. Augustine, Fla., arrived in the Windy City on Sunday and caught Chance about 36 hours later at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday. “I brought my fishing rod and it went down pretty fast,” Robb said during a news conference. Relying on 24 years of gator savvy, Robb said he “saw his eye shine and caught him on the fishing rod. One cast … and it was done” (The Associated Press). |

Another Chaotic Day on Capitol Hill From The Daily Mail: “The debate over a Democratic resolution to condemn Donald Trump’s tweets froze the House floor for over an hour Tuesday after a Republican lawmaker objected to Speaker Nancy Pelosi calling the president a ‘racist.’ ‘I stand by my statement. I’m proud of the attention being called to it because what the president said was completely inappropriate,’ Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol as the House voted whether or not to strike her remarks from the record. The Democratically-controlled chamber sided with Pelosi and allowed her comment to stand: 190-232. Pelosi took to the House floor Tuesday afternoon to criticize the president for repeatedly going after the ‘squad’ – four of young, Democratic, progressive lawmakers. … After she finished speaking, Republican Representative Doug Collins – a Trump ally – asked for her words to be stricken from the official Congressional Record for violating House procedure, which forbids maligning of the president on the House floor. … In an unprecedented move, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who was presiding over the House, banged the gavel down, declared ‘I abandon the chair,’ and stormed off. … House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer took the chair to rule Pelosi’s words out of order. ‘Characterizing an action as racist is not in order,’ Hoyer said as he announced the parliamentarian’s ruling on the matter. Since her words were ruled out of order, the speaker was forbidden from speaking on the House floor for the rest of the day.” Meanwhile down the street, hundreds of protesters set up a blockade with the goal of shutting down the Department of Homeland Security and specifically, ICE. They chanted “Never again means now” and “Abolish ICE” as they blocked the parking lot, front doors, and the street. Things are going justtttt fine. Planned Parenthood Aborts Its Own President The head of Planned Parenthood, Dr. Leana Wen, was forced out of the organization by its Board Chairs for reportedly not emphasizing abortion enough. “Dr. Wen had been the first physician to lead the organization in decades,” reported The New York Times. “The people familiar with the move said there had been internal strife over her management, and that the group felt it needed a more aggressive political leader to fight the efforts to roll back access to abortions.” Wen said in a statement she believes “the best way to protect abortion care is to be clear that it is not a political issues but a health care one, and that we can expand support for reproductive rights by finding common ground with the large majority of Americans who understand reproductive health care as the fundamental health care that it is.” In other words, Wen’s position on abortion isn’t politically extreme enough for the nation’s largest abortion provider. CBS News reports the organization won’t begin searching for a new president until next year. In the meantime, “Alexis McGill Johnson, the co-founder of the Perception Institute, will temporarily fill the role, the organization’s board unanimously voted on Tuesday.” The responses on Twitter were … glorious. That is, if you think it’s OK to joke about abortion. Ben Shapiro: “She was terminated before full term.” Chuck Ross: “Their body, their choice.” Steve Guest: “Planned Parenthood likes to terminate their CEOs just like they want to terminate babies: In the 3rd trimester.” Catherine Glenn Foster: “.@DrLeanaWen survived 8 whole months at @PPFA before she got terminated – longer than most babies do there tbh ” Random Guy Named Adam: “I hope they made you comfortable while they made a decision.” Stephen Miller: “It sucks they just ended your term like this without thinking of the pain you might feel.” From the 2020 Campaign Trail… Joe Biden: I’ll challenge Trump to do push-ups on stage if he makes fun of my age or mental state. (Yes, because push-ups would totally prove something about Biden’s mental state! But actually, let’s do this.) Elizabeth Warren tries to shame a war veteran for wanting to make money in the private sector. Bernie Sanders Pledges to appoint an attorney general who will break up big tech. LOL: Marianne Williamson polling ahead of Beto O’ Rourke, Corey Booker, and Kirsten Gillibrand in New Hampshire. Onto a More Important Competition… Full disclosure: I don’t watch “The Bachelorette.” But when drama broke out between Bachelorette Hannah Brown and contestant Luke Parker, I couldn’t help but get in. Luke is apparently a born-again Christian who told Hannah early on he was saving sex for marriage—and wanted her to do the same. But Hannah was not on the same page. “Guess what? Sex might be a sin out of marriage, pride is a sin, too, and I feel like this is like a pride thing,” Hannah said. “I feel like I’ve finally gotten clarity on you and I do not want you to be my husband.” When Luke asked if he could have a minute, Brown told him she had sex in a windmill with another contestant: “I have had sex and, like, Jesus still loves me.” Some viewers are taking Luke’s side, who shot back: “There is a difference between eating with sinners who laugh and sinners who laugh at their sin. Sin is the very thing that put Jesus on the cross and that’s not a laughing matter.” Others are taking Hannah’s accusing Luke of “slut shaming.” Then the two went at it on Twitter. Wednesday, July 17, 2019 House Condemns Trump “The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Tuesday to condemn President Donald Trump for ‘racist comments’ against four minority Democratic congresswomen.” Reuters See our prior coverage of Trump’s comments here. The Flip Side From the Left The left is extremely critical of Trump’s tweets, and believes they are symptomatic of a strategy that marginalizes minorities and immigrants. “[Trump has] talked a lot about who shouldn’t be in America… Here are a few groups Trump has suggested should not be in the country. 1. NFL players who protest during the national anthem… 2. Black immigrants from Africa and the Caribbean… 3. Muslims who want to come here… One could argue that calling for elected representatives, all of whom are minorities, to go back to countries they aren’t actually from is more blatantly problematic than the previous examples. But they are certainly part of a pattern for Trump, setting a standard for removal he doesn’t seem to apply to white people.” Eugene Scott, Washington Post “At the core of the strategy is Trump’s consistent drumbeat of equating the white European immigrant experience with the American ideal, setting those on his side of the divide against the politically correct elites, outsiders, immigrants or nonwhites who he implies are unfairly threatening what is good about the country.” Michael Scherer, Washington Post Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) writes, “President Trump has often crossed the line of what constitutes decent behavior. But this time feels different, because he is now attacking legal immigration and U.S. citizenship. His statements on Sunday and since then imply that immigrants are somehow less loyal to our country, less American, and that we should ‘go back’ or ‘leave’ if we disagree with him… The suspicion that immigrants are not to be trusted or are unpatriotic is not just wrong; it is un-American. And dangerous… “The problem for the president is that many Americans are immigrants or have friends or family members who are immigrants. The American people continue to support newcomers. A Gallup poll last year found that 75 percent of Americans believe immigration is good for the country. The American people understand that what makes the nation great is not people’s bloodlines or how long ago their ancestors arrived here, but their character and belief in the Constitution.” Ted Lieu, Washington Post Some argue, “a great number of Americans in both parties have little sympathy for the Squad, and for all kinds of reasons, ranging from simple racism, Islamophobia and misogyny, to genuine policy disagreements, to unhappiness with the bigotry and insensitivity that members of the Squad have themselves sometimes displayed. Almost everyone has a reason to temper their support. Professional Republicans are silent because they fear their voters; professional Democrats are still angry at the Squad for challenging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Many are inclined to declare a pox on both their houses… “Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of equivocation. Trump has given us a binary choice: Either stand with American principles, which in this case means standing in defense of the Squad, or equivocate, which means standing with Trump and white nationalism… Our nation won’t be undermined by anything the Squad has said or done. It will be undermined if we don’t fight back against this assault on our universal principles. Disagree with the Squad, refute them, argue with them, vote against them. But also defend them.” Robert Kagan, Washington Post Others counter, “A politician accused of anti-Semitism. Someone who has been critical of the United States and its leaders, often in strong terms. Who advocates positions outside the American mainstream. Who swears. These characteristics, President Trump argues, are ones that contribute to his labeling Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and several of her colleagues as ‘anti-USA,’ as he did Tuesday morning. They are also characteristics that describe Trump… “Omar has, in fact, been critical of U.S. politics. Earlier this month, The Washington Post reported on her unique approach to the country’s politics and culture, noting that she has offered criticism of her adopted country, which ‘had failed to live up to its founding ideals, a place that had disappointed her and so many immigrants, refugees and minorities like her’… [But] Trump has his own track record of much more direct criticism of the United States. While Barack Obama was president, Trump declared that political correctness had led the United States to lose ‘all sense of direction or purpose.’ That ‘our country and our ‘leaders’ are getting dumber all the time.’ That the country had become ‘stupid.’ That the country had never looked ‘weaker or more pathetic’… What has Ilhan Omar done that Donald Trump hasn’t?” Philip Bump, Washington Post “James Baldwin famously said, ‘I love America more than any other country in this world, and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.’ As immigrants, we often come to America because we love it more than the place we are leaving… We come to make a better life for ourselves, certainly, but also because we believe in the idea of America. Our optimism about what this nation can be is not naive, it’s aspirational and visionary. Among our masses lies the same fervor that our founding fathers brought here: a fervor for a democracy that represents our interests. When we run for office, the potential we have to make government work for all of us is one that true Americans welcome. Trump is afraid that we do not huddle in fear but stride in power.” Sayu Bhojwani, CNN From the Right The right disapproves of Trump’s tweets but disagrees that they were racist, and criticizes comments made by the ‘squad’ of progressive Democratic Congresswomen. “Trump’s remarks about the four were misinformed and unseemly, coming from a president, but they are not racist. Trump didn’t suggest that the four congressional rads leave America because of their race or national origin. He offered the suggestion because of their hatred, as he sees it… for America. This couldn’t be clearer. There are other ‘minority lawmakers’ who oppose Trump’s policies. He did not suggest, and has never suggested, that they leave America… “Trump’s statement isn’t from the anti-immigrant playbook. It’s from the ‘America, love it or leave it’ playbook. This doesn’t mean his statement was appropriate, coming from the American president, but it does mean it wasn’t anti-immigrant. Trump is fine with immigrants as long as (1) they are here legally and (2) they don’t hate America.” Paul Mirengoff, Power Line Blog “Donald Trump tweeting that the leftist non-white women in the House of Representatives loosely known as ‘The Squad’ should go back to the countries they came from and fix the problems there, then come back and show us how they did it, is a prime example of how different Americans define racism differently… While once we had, or thought we had, some fairly firm definitions for racist activity or speech, most having to do with intent or belief, we now have an ‘I know it when I see it’ standard… House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden have both recently been accused of racism, or engaging in racist tropes, or whatever we’re calling it now… Racism has become the new pornography. We know it when we see it.” David Marcus, The Federalist “Words matter. Especially emotionally loaded words such as ‘racist.’ That’s why it is so frustrating to see President Trump’s awful, inexcusable tweets telling Democratic congresswomen to ‘go back’ to other countries mischaracterized as racist. Race and nationality are not the same thing. Race and ethnicity are not even the same thing. Race and religion are far from synonymous. Likewise, racism is not the same thing as xenophobia, or as nativism, or as bigotry. Racism is a form of bigotry, but not all bigotry is racism… “When words are over-used or misused, they lose their power. That’s why we all learn the story of the boy who cried wolf. If ‘racism’ is used to refer to everything that is seen as bad and as seen as having anything to do with ‘other-ness,’ people start tuning it out. Because it is used to mean so many things, it begins to mean nothing. Its horribleness then becomes more difficult, not less, to recognize and counteract. Trump’s tweets were wrong because they were nativist and arguably bigoted. To say that is to say enough.” Quin Hillyer, Washington Examiner Some, however, contend that Trump’s “commentary calls to mind the same kinds of dark, xenophobic, hatred that has greeted new Americans since there were new Americans, and, while it certainly continues to this day, it isn’t a sentiment most Americans are used to hearing from their President… The story of America is written in the blood, sweat, tears and – certainly – perspectives, opinions, and hard work of immigrants. We are a nation where anyone can become an American, and on becoming so is held in the same standing as any other. When we disparage immigrants – or our political enemies, or both – as less than their fellow Americans, we do a disservice to the very idea of America, and the ideals that make our country great.” Drew Holden, The Resurgent “On Sunday, Donald Trump gave the Democrats a gift… On Monday, the four congresswomen handed Trump a gift in return, managing to respond to the president’s insults in some of the most politically self-destructive ways possible… “First, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota again called for impeaching President Trump during the press conference with the members of the “Squad” yesterday afternoon. The latest NBC News poll finds that just 21 percent of registered voters want the House to begin impeachment proceedings… Second, Omar also contended Trump ‘has been credibly accused of committing multiple crimes, including colluding with a foreign government to interfere with our election.’ Did she miss the entire Mueller report? Or does she think that Trump did collude and that over 22 months, Robert Mueller and his whole team of investigators and prosecutors just missed the evidence?” Jim Geraghty, National Review “Since even before Pelosi took back the speaker’s gavel in 2018, she has been begging her Democratic colleagues to drop the impeachment fantasy. She has been clear about this since Trump’s inauguration, saying over and over again that it is not the strategy to pursue, especially as the 2020 elections are just around the corner. Yet Omar and Tlaib called for it anyway on national television, stoking the fire of impeachment and challenging fellow Democrats to get behind an issue that Pelosi has explicitly instructed the caucus to drop… “It is astonishing to see they did not band together for at least 48 hours, taking full advantage of the political win Trump handed them. One would think that they would have rallied together, putting their strategic and personal differences aside long enough to refocus their attention and energy on a common enemy.” Becket Adams, Washington Examiner On the bright side… This kid makes shelter puppies look fabulous. POLITICO Playbook: The House’s sound and fury
By JAKE SHERMAN and ANNA PALMER
07/17/2019 06:00 AM EDT
DRIVING THE DAY
AND THE TRAIN KEEPS ROLLING … The House will vote today on holding A.G. BILL BARR and Commerce Secretary WILBUR ROSS in contempt. … The House leadership must deal with Rep. AL GREEN’S (D-Texas) impeachment resolution, which he introduced Tuesday. … The MUELLER HEARING is a week from today. … Speaker NANCY PELOSI strategized with committee chairs about Trump investigations Tuesday night, and is planning to talk to a wider group about pending litigation this morning with House counsel Doug Letter as the guest (hat tip: Heather Caygle).
THE PRESIDENT has no control of a Capitol that has spun wildly away from him. He has become fixated with junior members of Congress. Republicans had to let it be known Tuesday that defections on the condemnation vote were not welcome. THE PRESIDENT will be in the White House all day with nothing on his schedule until a late-afternoon departure to North Carolina.
WHAT TOOK SO LONG? … TUESDAY’S debate to condemn the president took a lot longer than it was meant to, because Pelosi read the title of the bill, which called the president’s comments racist, a violation of the decorum rules of the House. So Republicans tried to take down her words, a process of undoing the remarks by a member of Congress. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), who was presiding over the chamber, abandoned in protest. Eventually, after some back and forth, the House voted against striking her remarks and restored her ability to speak.
— THE FOUR REPUBLICANS WHO BROKE WITH TRUMP: Reps. Will Hurd (Texas), Fred Upton (Mich.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.) and Susan Brooks (Ind.), who is retiring. Rep. Justin Amash, a Michigan independent who recently left the GOP, also voted with Democrats to condemn the president. More from Sarah Ferris, Heather Caygle and Melanie Zanona on the vote
— THE GOP’S POLITICAL CALCULUS: BURGESS EVERETT and JAMES ARKIN: “Republicans’ choice: Stand with Trump or risk his wrath”
NYT, A1 … JEREMY PETERS, ANNIE KARNI and MAGGIE HABERMAN: “Trump Sets the 2020 Tone: Like 2016, Only This Time ‘the Squad’ Is Here”: “With three days of attacks on four liberal, minority freshman congresswomen, President Trump and the Republicans have sent the clearest signal yet that their approach to 2020 will be a racially divisive reprise of the strategy that helped Mr. Trump narrowly capture the White House in 2016.
“It is the kind of fight that the president relishes. He has told aides, in fact, that he is pleased with the Democratic reaction to his attacks, boasting that he is ‘marrying’ the House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic Party to the four congresswomen known as ‘the Squad.’” NYT … Front-page headline: “Divisive Words Nod to Strategy For Re-election”
THE LATEST ON THE CAPS/DEBT LIMIT DEAL … “Pelosi cites ‘progress’ in talks to clinch budget deal this month,” by Caitlin Emma and Sarah Ferris: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested on Tuesday that she and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin may be within striking distance of a two-year agreement to avoid billions in automatic spending cuts and a default on the nation’s debt.
“‘We have a clear understanding of what we want to agree to and I think that’s progress,’ the California Democrat told reporters after speaking by phone to Mnuchin. The two plan to talk again on Wednesday after days of ongoing negotiations. ‘We’ll have an announcement about something soon one way or another,’ she told reporters.” POLITICO
— CONGRESS WILL LEAVE TOWN for the week Thursday afternoon. Next week is the last week both chambers will be in session. So any deal has to come out Thursday or over the weekend to have a chance of passage before the August recess.
Good Wednesday morning. SPOTTED: Roger Stone walking out of the Conrad Hotel on Tuesday afternoon. He had dinner at The Palm. He did not ’gram his meal, however.
OVERHEARD — Stylists at Aveda 14 hair salon on 14th Street NW complaining Tuesday afternoon about having to shut down the salon Thursday morning for a couple of hours so that IVANKA TRUMP can come in to get her hair colored.
A message from PhRMA:
Some policymakers want government to set prices for Medicare Part B based on those mandated by foreign countries. That means seniors may face restricted access to medicines and could wait years to get new medicines – just like they do in those countries. The International Pricing Index Model is the for Medicare.
IN MEMORIAM — LINDA GREENHOUSE in the NYT: “Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, Who Led Liberal Wing, Dies at 99”: “John Paul Stevens, whose 35 years on the United States Supreme Court transformed him, improbably, from a Republican antitrust lawyer into the outspoken leader of the court’s liberal wing, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 99. The cause was complications of a stroke he suffered the day before, the Supreme Court announced in a statement.
“When he retired in 2010 at the age of 90, Justice Stevens was the second-oldest and second-longest-serving justice ever to sit on the court. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was about eight months older when he retired in 1932, and William O. Douglas had served 36 years (1939-75).
“Justice Stevens spent much of his service on the court in the shadow of more readily definable colleagues when he emerged as a central figure during a crucial period of the court’s history: the last phase of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist’s tenure and the early years under Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.
“It was a time when the court took an active role in balancing individual liberty and national security and in policing the constitutional separation of powers, asserting a muscular brand of judicial authority that was welcomed by neither the White House nor Congress.” NYT
— From Stevens’ May 11 interview with the Post’s Robert Barnes: “You wake up in the morning and you wonder what’s happened.” WaPo
— USA Today: “On Oct. 1, 1932, in the midst of that year’s presidential campaign, [FDR] threw out the first pitch of Game 3 of the World Series — the same game in which Ruth (allegedly) pointed to the outfield before hitting a home run, sending the Yankees on to victory and an eventual four-game sweep of the Cubs. … Also in attendance at Game 3 of the 1932 World Series at Wrigley Field: 12-year-old Chicagoan John Paul Stevens.” USA Today
SORRY JARED! … REPUBLICANS WON’T ‘WASTE TIME’ … WAPO’S SEUNG MIN KIM: “White House readies immigration plan amid uproar over Trump’s ‘go back’ remarks”: “As the uproar over President Trump’s racist remarks demanding four minority Democratic lawmakers ‘go back [to countries] from which they came’ continued to flare Tuesday, the White House prepared to roll out a plan that would detail the type of immigrants the administration wants to admit to the United States. …
“Senior Republicans in the Senate on Tuesday immediately began downplaying the prospects of the White House’s proposal — an effort led primarily by senior adviser Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law — even before they had been briefed on its details.
“‘To get it to the floor, you have to have some bipartisan buy-in,’ said Senate Majority Whip John Thune (S.D.), the chamber’s second-ranking Republican. ‘There would have to be a lot of work that would get done, and I don’t sense that they’re anywhere close to having done that work with Republicans, let alone with Democrats.’
“In private, senior Republicans were more skeptical of the plan’s fate. One GOP senator said, ‘I don’t think there’s any chance that we have any bandwidth to do that,’ while a senior Republican aide said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) does not intend to ‘waste time’ on legislation that has little chance of garnering the necessary 60 votes to advance in the Senate.” WaPo

BIG ON THE LEFT — “Planned Parenthood ousts leader after less than a year,” by WaPo’s Lenny Bernstein, Ariana Eunjung Cha and Amy Goldstein: “The president of Planned Parenthood was forced out of her job Tuesday in a dispute over her management style and the direction of the nation’s largest women’s reproductive rights organization amid growing political and legal challenges to abortion.
“Planned Parenthood’s board met in emergency session for hours Tuesday and approved Leana Wen’s immediate departure just eight months after she took over the post. The terms had been negotiated over several weeks, said a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman.
“The ouster occurred at one of the most difficult moments in the group’s history. The organization faces growing financial peril from a Trump administration rule that took effect Monday barring federally funded family planning clinics from providing referrals for abortions. A message from PhRMA:
The United States has the only health system in the world that relies on market competition, saving the government and seniors a total of $132 billion from 2005 to 2017 in Part B medicine spending. That’s because Part B’s market-based reimbursement system, which was implemented in 2005, incorporates discounts, rebates and price concessions negotiated across the U.S. market, providing millions of seniors with access to medicines that are used to treat some of the most complex diseases like cancer and autoimmune conditions. Some in Washington want to end this and instead set payment based on the prices mandated by foreign governments that seriously restrict patient access to medicines. Why would we take that risk here in the United States? Any changes to Medicare should help patients, not hurt them. Limiting seniors’ access to lifesaving treatments based on the choices of foreign countries is the wrong prescription for Medicare.

Good morning, Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day. At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day. You can listen live here. Planned Parenthood Intends to Make It Harder for Women to Get Healthcare It was very interesting last night to see Planned Parenthood fire its CEO, Leana Wen, a doctor. In a statement, Wen said, “I came to planned parenthood to run a national healthcare organization… the new board has determined that the priority of Planned Parenthood moving forward is to double down on abortion rights advocacy.” Planned Parenthood largely confirms this. The organization lost several of its top political operatives after Wen arrived and now they’re reversing course to become fully an abortion advocacy organization. But there is something really troubling about that. The post Planned Parenthood Intends to Make It Harder for Women to Get Healthcare appeared first on The Resurgent. MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: In 2020, Dems are replaying the 2016 health care wars
If you’ve heard the single payer-versus-Obamacare debate before among Democrats, you’re probably not alone.
Indeed, it was one of the central arguments in the 2016 Democratic presidential race – when Bernie Sanders was pushing for his single-payer/Medicare for All plan, and when Hillary Clinton was defending Obamacare.
Guess what’s on the agenda for today: This afternoon, Sanders delivers a major address on his single-payer Medicare for All bill.
And it comes two days after this cycle’s Democratic frontrunner, Joe Biden, defended Obamacare and argued that building on it should be the framework for the party if they recapture the White House.
Sound familiar?
AP Photo/Jeff Chiu
And it might explain why Sanders has been losing altitude in the 2020 Democratic race – tied for third in the national NBC/WSJ poll, or down 11 points in New Hampshire, per CNN’s new poll.
He isn’t the fresh new candidate in this contest.
When you think about it, that fresh factor explains why some 2020ers have caught on — and why others have struggled.
Beto O’Rourke? He was the “it” candidate in 2018. But one year later, he’s no longer so new.
Pete Buttigieg? He’s definitely the new guy, though his struggles so far with African-American voters have lowered his ceiling.
Elizabeth Warren and her policy-a-day approach? That’s different.
And Joe Biden? Not so new…
Blazing a different kind of trail
Speaking of familiar faces, guess who’s thinking about mounting a Republican primary to President Trump in 2020?
Former South Carolina Congressman (and Gov.) Mark Sanford.
“Sanford, in an interview Tuesday with The Post and Courier, confirmed he will take the next month to formulate a potential run against Trump as a way of pushing a national debate about America’s mounting debt, deficit and government spending.”
“He would run as a Republican.”
The South Carolina Republican Party didn’t greet the news with open arms.
“The last time Mark Sanford had an idea this dumb, it killed his governorship. This makes about as much sense as that trip up the Appalachian Trail,” the party said.
Then again, we can think of an idea that can match that one – Trump opposing the sitting GOP congressman (Sanford) in a primary, an insurgent winning the nomination as a result, and the Republican Party losing the seat to a Democrat in the general election.

2020 VISION: Comin’ to Carolina
President Trump holds a re-election rally in Greenville, N.C. tonight at 7:00 pm ET.
On the campaign trail today: Also today, Joe Biden stumps in Council Bluffs, Iowa… Tim Ryan, Tulsi Gabbard, John Delaney and Michael Bennet take their turns at the AARP/Des Moines Register town hall… John Hickenlooper is in New Hampshire… Bernie Sanders delivers his Medicare for All speech in DC at 4:00 pm ET… Cory Booker raises money in DC… And Pete Buttiegieg hits Illinois (for a veterans community event) and Nashville, Tenn (where he raises money).
Dispatches from NBC’s embeds
Joe Biden held a health care roundtable event in Le Mars, Iowa to discuss his plan that was announced Monday. NBC’s Marianna Sotomayor and Priscilla Thompson have the highlights. “Biden started his remarks saying that he knows a lot about health care because his life has been surrounded by loss that started in hospitals. However, ‘healthcare is harder’ to accomplish than any foreign policy negotiation, Biden told doctors and health care managers. He continued to rip Medicare for All as an unachievable goal in the interim and warned that it could make a health care facility like the one in Le Mars virtually extinct.”
Also on the health care front, Kamala Harris doubled down on her claim that her Medicare For All plan will not raise taxes on the middle class. NBC’s Deepa Shivaram reports what Harris said yesterday in Iowa: “My vision of Medicare will not be about a middle-class tax hike. So I am not prepared to do that at all and in that way perhaps, my position is different from some of the folks who were on the debate stage. But that is not what is going to happen.”
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… four.
Four.
That’s the number of House Republicans who joined Democrats yesterday in a vote to condemn President Trump’s “go back” Twitter comments about four congresswomen of color.
The four were:
Will Hurd of Texas
Fred Upton of Michigan
Susan Brooks of Indiana (who is retiring)
Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania
Also joining them was former Republican Justin Amash, an independent who recently left the GOP.
TWEET OF THE DAY: RIP John Paul Stevens

Secretary of Education Betsy Devos said that her department was
investigating a joint UNC-Duke conference on Gaza (which was covered here)
to see if it violated funding guidelines. When she spoke about BDS, she
referred to its proponents as “campus bullies.” This was a theme picked
up by various speakers, especially during the anti-Semitism on campus.
Alyza Lewin described the phenomenon as the mainstreaming of the
“dehumanization of Zionists.” Prof Jacobson described intersectionality,
according to its current meaning, as a means of marginalizing
pro-Israel students. And in a different context, Eugen Kontorovich
observed that BDS on the corporate level is a means of pressuring a
business to adopt policies that go against its best interests. Airbnb
didn’t boycott Israel out of its belief that Israel is wrong, but
because it feared the BDS. Airbnb relented when it realized the damage
it did to itself by boycotting Israel. But the idea that BDS or
anti-Semitism is just another legitimate view was criticized by Rabbi
Abba Cohen of Agudath Israel’s Washington office who described efforts
to marginalize Israel (and Jews) as “grotesque bigotry” that is
characterized as ‘just another respectable opinion.'”
Vijeta Uniyal: “Thousands
of environmental activists caused five major British cities to “grind

climate change. Protestors blocked traffic, occupied bridges, and disrupted businesses during their protest.”

Perhaps French desires to position himself in the ideal possible position vis a vis the dominant strains of mainstream media, but in this case, that desire puts him into a position where he was running down native born Americans, in a way that is reminiscent of Bill Kristol’s 2017 musings on the dangers of “lazy” Americans, saying “immigrants do have more of the old-fashioned America virtues than lots of old-fashioned Americans.” Read more of The Transom by signing up for a free trial today. follow on Twitter | friend on Facebook | forward to a friend Copyright © 2019 The Federalist, All rights reserved. unsubscribe from this list | update subscription preferences |

Where in the world is Palau? Posted: 17 Jul 2019 04:07 AM PDT I’ll take GEOGRAPHY for $1,000, Alex. Answer: Westernmost part of the former U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Question: What is Palau? I have not researched to see if Palau has ever actually been a brain stumper on Jeopardy. But to the average American, it is esoteric knowledge that not many other than Jeopardy […] The post Where in the world is Palau? appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Why conservatives shouldn’t support ‘Ag-Gag’ laws Posted: 16 Jul 2019 09:09 PM PDT For the most part, conservatism is black and white, especially when compared to progressive ideologies that dwell in contradictions and allow activists to make a living telling lies. But there are circumstances that demand a deeper examination and possibly a little soul-searching to help decide which conservative stance should prevail. One example of this is […] The post Why conservatives shouldn’t support ‘Ag-Gag’ laws appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
CNN’s attempt to convince 8-woman panel that Trump is racist goes horribly wrong Posted: 16 Jul 2019 08:34 PM PDT The leftist propaganda channel, better known as CNN, has a narrative they want pushed to their dwindling audience. They want all of their viewers to believe that President Trump is clearly racist and the Republican base is behind him all the way. In a way, they accomplished half of their goal, but at a great […] The post CNN’s attempt to convince 8-woman panel that Trump is racist goes horribly wrong appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Hollywood defends mediocrity, elitism, with 32 Game of Thrones Emmy nominations Posted: 16 Jul 2019 07:35 PM PDT The only two places where being nominated for something is close enough to winning something are Hollywood and the Democrat Party. With that said the 2019 Emmy nominations came out in strong defense of the final season of Game of Thrones which was the most poorly received season in the show’s run. Despite the petitions […] The post Hollywood defends mediocrity, elitism, with 32 Game of Thrones Emmy nominations appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
GOP says The Squad’s goal is anarchy. They’re half correct. Posted: 16 Jul 2019 07:05 PM PDT I’ve seen the future. Okay, so it’s a potential future and I wasn’t granted a prophetic vision or anything. I’ve just been watching what’s said (and more importantly what’s not said) by the radical progressives of the so-called “Squad” of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib. The freshmen Congresswomen have made a […] The post GOP says The Squad’s goal is anarchy. They’re half correct. appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Don’t celebrate: Dr. Wen’s ousting at Planned Parenthood is a bad sign for the pro-life movement Posted: 16 Jul 2019 05:56 PM PDT Cheers have been coming from many on the right as Planned Parenthood removed their president after less than a year. Dr. Leana Wen was ousted in what she called a “secret meeting” during negotiations with the board. They were allegedly working out an amicable exit plan after conflicts with staff, but the real story is […] The post Don’t celebrate: Dr. Wen’s ousting at Planned Parenthood is a bad sign for the pro-life movement appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Quick note to #NeverTrump conservatives: Check the policy proposals Posted: 16 Jul 2019 01:44 PM PDT I was a #NeverTrump conservative. I’ve come to terms with the reality that President Trump, with all his flaws, is promoting a mostly conservative agenda. I also acknowledge that any damage done by carrying over the divisiveness that began in the Obama administration has already been done. I still believe I was right to oppose […] The post Quick note to #NeverTrump conservatives: Check the policy proposals appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Joe Biden’s radical Obamacare 2.0 proposal is still too sensible for Democrats Posted: 16 Jul 2019 12:53 PM PDT A year ago, if any conservative analyst had read the proposed healthcare fix released by former Vice President Joe Biden yesterday, they would have said it was a radical departure from what Democrats have been saying for a while. They would have noted that it took many of the original provisions ejected from Obamacare at […] The post Joe Biden’s radical Obamacare 2.0 proposal is still too sensible for Democrats appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Who benefited most from The Squad’s news conference? The occupant of the White House. Posted: 16 Jul 2019 12:33 PM PDT I almost feel sorry for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. If she wasn’t such a problem for America by blocking border crisis solutions and generally promoting a failed leftist ideology, I’d pity her for having to deal with the aftermath of “The Squad” and their anti-American escapades, highlighted wonderfully during their press conference yesterday. We won’t survive the suppression of Liberty by the Socialist-Left Posted: 16 Jul 2019 12:07 PM PDT The Left has a new workaround for Liberty: Dominate and shut down the marketplace of Ideas. REALCLEARPOLITICS
07/17/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Charter Communications: Liberal Bigotry; Fear and Bias; Joltin’ Joe By Carl M. Cannon on Jul 17, 2019 09:13 am Good morning, it’s Wednesday, July 17, 2019. Seventy-eight years ago today, Joe DiMaggio came back down to Earth — in Cleveland, of all places. Unlike the astronauts I wrote about yesterday, the son of a San Francisco fisherman had never really left terra firma. He’d defied the laws of nature another way, with a famous hitting streak that captured the American imagination. The incredible streak — getting at least one hit in 56 straight games — began on May 15, 1941, when Joltin’ Joe went one-for-four against the Chicago White Sox. As spring turned to summer, Americans looking for a distraction from the ominous news in Europe turned to the sports pages as DiMaggio kept collecting hits. Day after day after day. I’ll have more on the streak — and how it provided a snapshot of prewar America — in a moment. First, I’d steer you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * The Left’s Broad, Bigoted Politics of Vilification. Steve Cortes responds to liberals’ criticism of him — and other people of color — for supporting the president. Democracy at Risk: How to Overcome Fear, Bias and Modern Media. Robert M. Smith and Les Francis offer this prescription for the polarization that afflicts American society. Online Freedom of Speech Threatened by Silicon Valley Elites. Kelly Sadler writes that conservative viewpoints are being muffled by Facebook, Google, Twitter and other social media giants. Chromebooks in Schools Aren’t All They Were Cracked Up to Be. In RealClearInvestigations, Tim Cavanaugh reports that hopes for “ed tech” benefits are unsupported by research. Congress Must Increase Transparency for Credit Unions. In RealClearMarkets, Thomas Aiello raises concerns about regulators turning a blind eye toward credit unions’ expansion outside of their narrowly defined banking role. Costly Electric Vehicles Won’t Save the Planet. In RealClearEnergy, Gerard Scimeca argues against car subsidies that mostly benefit the rich. A Combat Pilot’s Perspective on F-15 vs. F-35. In RealClearDefense, Mark J. Ariolla asserts that there is no need to shelve the versatile fighter jet for the more costly newer model. * * * In 1941, most Americans sensed that the United States would eventually get dragged into the horrific war enveloping the rest of the world. Millions of baseball fans figured they should go see their favorite baseball players while they still could. This instinct was right: By 1942, most of the gods of the diamond had traded their baseball uniforms for the military togs handed out at Uncle Sam’s boot camps. And if you felt drawn to baseball, 1941 was a helluva year to be at the ballpark. Quite simply, wrote sportswriter Robert W. Creamer, it was “the best baseball season ever.” In the National League, the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals waged a spirited pennant race all year long. In the American League, the Indians swept a July 4 double-header to pull within two games of the Yankees. That wouldn’t last: New York would pull away and win the pennant easily, with the Boston Red Sox a distant second. But what we remember, or what captivated Americans at the time, was the hitting streak. That summer, the most exhilarating competition was between frenemies Joe DiMaggio and Red Sox slugger Ted Williams. Could the Splendid Splinter attain the mythical mark of .400? Would the Yankee Clipper ever play another game without getting a hit? DiMaggio broke George Sisler’s American League record of 41 consecutive games with a hit on June 29 at Washington’s Griffith Stadium. On July 2, “Wee” Willie Keeler’s major league record of 44 games fell. Now, even Americans who were not baseball fans were following the improbable progress of The Streak. The news was everywhere. Even those who opted for music over baseball on their radios would hear popular band leader Les Brown’s hit tune “Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio.” It was good for attendance, too. On July 17, 1941, Cleveland’s cavernous Municipal Stadium was packed with 67,463 fans, the largest crowd of the year. Yes, the Indians and the Yanks were still in a pennant race then, but many fans were there to see whether DiMaggio could keep it going. The Streak stood at 56 games. Always entrepreneurial, DiMaggio himself was hoping to get to 57. The suits at Heinz had promised him a $10,000 bonus if he could reach the number on their ketchup bottles. Indians’ star pitcher Bob Feller was quietly hoping for the same thing: He was pitching the following night and Rapid Robert wanted to stop DiMaggio himself. The record book shows that the pitchers who did it were Indians’ starter Al Smith and reliever Jim Bagby Jr. The box score also shows that Smith induced DiMaggio to ground out to third in the first inning and again in the third, and that he then walked DiMaggio before Bagby induced an inning-ending double play from Joe in the 8th, the last time he would come to bat. It was finally over. The player who really ended the streak, though, was slick-fielding Cleveland third baseman Ken Keltner. In those first two ground outs, he twice robbed DiMaggio of doubles with nifty back-handed stops, and then nailed the Yankee Clipper at first with strong throws. It had rained the night before, leaving Joe’s fans to wonder if the soggy footing had prevented him from beating out one of the balls hit to Keltner. As was his style, DiMaggio showed no emotion as he trotted back to centerfield knowing it had come to an end. “I’m glad it’s over,” he told reporters after the game. “I’ve been under a strain.” But as baseball writer Kostya Kennedy noted in an excellent book on The Streak, DiMaggio later told friends that when he lost the streak it was like losing his best friend. Years later, long after Keltner and DiMaggio had both hung up their spikes for good, they ran into each other at a charity event. DiMaggio signed a ball for his nemesis: “To the culprit,” he wrote. But another culprit was DiMaggio’s fierce pride. Often overlooked when Keltner’s defense is described is where he was positioned that night. The first two times DiMaggio came to bat the Cleveland third baseman stationed himself at the edge of the outfield grass. “Joe could have dropped down a bunt and made it to first base at a trot,” Kennedy noted. But that wasn’t something the proud DiMaggio would deign to do. “Is DiMaggio a good bunter?” Yankees skipper Joe McCarthy was once asked. “We’ll never know,” he replied. Carl M. STEYN ONLINE
The Cancelling of Lindsay Shepherd
by Laura Rosen Cohen Laura’s Links July 17, 2019 https://www.steynonline.com/9555/the-cancelling-of-lindsay-shepherd |
Lindsay
Shepherd and Mark on the set of the Mark Steyn Show last year. Shepherd
has now been kicked off Twitter for “misgendering” a transgender user.
Laura Rosen Cohen returns with the latest instalment of her
routine round-up of specially curated stories from across the globe.
This feature also serves as SteynOnline’s weekly open thread, so do
chime in in the comments if the mood strikes you.
Another lovely summer week has come and gone, and I’m loving the
heat. And I don’t mean the sun. I mean the burning, fiery meltdown of
the American Democratic party into Wokeopolis Now. As Mark described earlier this week,
it’s quite an interesting time to watch House Leader Nancy Pelosi morph
into Nancy Trumposi (!!!!) and for Joe Biden to be lumped in with
Trumposi and thrown under the progressive bus because The Squad (of
Jew-hating, anti-American Shrews of Congress) has decided #TheyToo are angry, old, racist and irrelevant white people. Is there enough popcorn on the planet for this show?
While your corn is popping, let’s take a momentary break from the
schadenfreude and focus our attention on some of the more notable,
interesting and horrifying stories from the past week.
~
Social Media News:
What could possibly be wrong with this?
And in related news…
Mainstream media all but ignores the #WaxMyBalls guy and gets Lindsay Shepherd permanently banned from Twitter.
And hey, Toronto Sun, I object to describing Ms. Shepherd as
“polarizing”. Gross. (Ed.: Some more details about Shepherd’s summary
expulsion from social media can be found here. You may also wish to watch Mark’s interview with his fellow parliamentary witness.)
~
Europe:
The important thing about Pakistani rape gangs is to never talk about Pakistani rape gangs. You must jail those who discuss it, and if those uppity deplorable infidels still want to talk about it remind them that security is the new shut up. Because after all, it’s a lovely culture, all cultures are equal and therefore you musn’t say anything bad about it. So just shut up. The end.
Nearby, Swedes are starting to notice that their country has turned into a Third World slum. Volvo may have to pack its bags. Discuss!
~
North America:
From America, Jeffrey Epstein tells judge he’d like his finances kept secret. I’ll bet!
Good Twitter: Daughter helps single Dad pick a good outfit for a date, becomes a minor Twitter sensation and subsequently gets lots of date offers after being stood up.
When preachy wokey wokeness meets the Law of Unintended Consequences.
San Fran Feces learns that the Broken Windows theory actually works!
Today, in Satan (an ongoing conversation between myself, Kathy Shaidle and Sheila Gunn-Reid).
I hate it when I agree with lefties but it does happen. Stop. This. Madness.
From Georgia, a story of when two hearts come together as one. Rest in peace.
~
Jews and Israel:
Gotta love Paul Anka.
You want to know when there will be peace? There will be peace when children with cancer are more important than Jew-hatred.
Another column I wish I had written! Oh well, at least I can endorse it whole-heartedly.
From one of my current sources of inspiration, advice on how to handle life when things get tough (long but worth it).
Lastly, this dumb bum got it all wrong! Idiot, we don’t use Jewish blood for the matzohs.
DUH! We need young, gentile blood. What a moron. Academics! (Please
also consider the fact that this “expert” is from a country with a peace
treaty with Israel…and for this, Israel gave up the Sinai!)

As we close shop for today, my professors in journalism school always
told us to end collections of links on a high note. Just kidding. I
didn’t go to journalism school and there were no dang Interwebz back
then in the dark ages. It’s like Elvis always said “Don’t believe
everything you see on the Internet.”. I know that’s true and a legit
quote because I totally saw it on Facebook. For realzzz!
Thus, without further ado, and for your viewing pleasure, here are some cows moooooooving and grooving to a saxophone serenade.
You’re welcome! And now it’s time for your comments!
