Milkshakes Come in Vanilla, Chocolate and Concrete
by Laura Rosen Cohen Laura’s Links July 5, 2019 https://www.steynonline.com/9507/milkshakes-come-in-vanilla-chocolate-and-concrete |
Laura Rosen Cohen once again takes us 20,000 links under the sea
in her weekly round-up of content from around the globe ranging from the
cute to the infuriating.
It was a big birthday week here in North America! So while we
Canadians recover from Dominion Day and our American friends rest up
from their Fourth of July celebrations (see Mark’s own musical commemoration here),
I’ve once again done the heavy lifting ’round these parts (remember you
can repay me in Hermes scarves), putting together a collection of links
for your perusal. From the breathtaking to the emetic, you’ll find it
all here. And remember, you’re under no obligation to agree with my take
on things. In fact, I’d be more than a little worried if you did. So
pour yourself a cup of your favourite daytime or evening libation and
get reading. To all the Mark Steyn Club members, do feel free to shake
things up in the comments!

America:
Holocaust survivor wants AOC out of Congress.
This is not going to happen. I think that reflexively dismissing her as
stupid is a big mistake. She is a publicity hound and I believe she and
the other two thirds of the Trifecta of Jew-Hating Shrews in the
American congress are the foot soldiers of the Hamas wing of the
Democratic party. They are all tasked with testing the waters of pure,
unadulterated anti-Semitism, anti-Westernism and anti-Americanism from
within. They love the publicity, they love to yank our collective cranks
and they don’t care a whit about being caught in lies or alleged
displays of historical ignorance.
I was going advise you all to vote instead for vote for Mini AOC in the next elections, but alas, the left destroys every single vestige of fun on the Internet and has absolutely no sense of humour.
By the way, there’s some pretty shady stuff going on at the southern border. Does anyone care? Libs are always FOR THE CHILDREN and stuff so….
I’m obviously not Catholic (did my name give it away???), but even I can sense this is not kosher…. My Catholic friend suggested that exorcisms are often warranted in dire situations. Can we get a Groupon? Can I get an amen?
Mob violence in Portland, Oregon. It will not stop with Andy Ngo. Anyone else sick of hearing the noun “milkshake” turned into a verb? It’s assault. Not “milkshaking”. Especially when they’re concrete.
And also, let’s stop calling these thugs “Antifa”. They are criminals
and hooligans and we certainly shouldn’t be using their self-indulgent
terminology that describes them as “anti-fascists” when they are the
fascists, and mostly “privileged white dudes“. And very pasty ones at that.
Lastly, this is your city on leftism mixed with a side order of zero per cent popularity. Priorities!
~
Europe:
Snapshots from the formerly great Britain: the way things were, and the way things are.
Also from the U.K, the most popular baby names of 2019. Got any idea about the most popular boys’ name? Take a wild one.
British culture ain’t what it used to be.
This is from April, but I must have missed it. However it’s never too
late to condemn barbarity and I can never do it often enough.
Barbarians.
This beautiful baby
is considered a dispensable clump of tissue by the left. Twenty-four
weeks gestation is either a miracle or an abortion or a reproductive
health issue or something depending on your view of human life. Do you
side with the Culture of Life or the Culture of Death?
How about the culture of “sex education“?
Lastly, how do you say “nothing to see here” in Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey? France is truly committing suicide.
~
Canada:
Prime Minister Hairdo has stickers on his briefcase. Inside the briefcase are his Happy Meal and crayons.
~
Joooooz:
Things that make Jew-haters sad.
By the way, if the name and identity of the head of the Mossad is
public, maybe more people should think about their online anonymity. And
by “think about it”, I mean: if more people shed their anonymity, and
as a matter of course, said something equivalent to the late Andrew
Breitbart’s “So what?”, the Wokestapo would be defanged, and lose its
ability to destroy the lives of people it disagrees with. The mob yields
an amount of power disproportionate to its numbers because it smells
fear like a shark smells blood.
From the bless those who bless you, curse those who curse you file…
~
Asia:
Whoops: Dalai Lama opens mouth, inserts foot. Lamentable!
~

How this event came about is a perfect example of how Trump operates. After observing Trump for a long time, I’ve learned to take very little he says at face value. People who hang onto his every word as if he literally means everything he says will never understand what he’s doing. The events in Asia last week are just another great example of this. Read more Are Our Independence Days Numbered? By Diana West We have arrived at a point in U.S. history that even our Founders, in their nearly infinite wisdom, may not have foreseen. Regarding Election 2020, we are faced with the grave question of whether enough Americans remain in the 50 states to go to the polls to affirm the continued existence of the United States of America by voting for Donald Trump. If the answer is no, if Americans are outnumbered and even surrounded by those animated by an openly anti-America agenda promoted by the Democratic Party, 2020 could be a terrible turning-point of no return. Trump Stays Patriotic in the Rain From Fox News: “With the Lincoln Memorial in the background and flanked on both sides by camouflaged Bradley fighting vehicles, President Trump used his “Salute to America” speech Thursday evening to praise the men and women of the Armed Forces and American exceptionalism. Despite concerns that he would use the Fourth of July event as a glorified campaign rally, Trump stuck mainly to the script during his speech – praising the spirit that “runs through the veins of every American patriot” and attempting to strike a more unifying and conciliatory tone than he is generally known to take. “Today, we come together as one nation with this very special Salute to America,” a smiling Trump said. “We celebrate our history, our people, and the heroes who proudly defend our flag — the brave men and women of the United States military.” Trump Praises Border Agents in Historic 4th of July Address From The Hill: “President Trump praised Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during his “Salute to America” speech on the National Mall on Thursday, in the midst of sustained public criticism of conditions for immigrants trying to cross the southern border. “Our nation has always honored the heroes who serve our communities, first responders, police, sheriffs, ICE, Border Patrol and all of the brave men and women of law enforcement,” Trump said in front of the Lincoln Memorial. “On this July Fourth, we pay special tribute to the military service members who laid down their lives for our nation.” Trump’s speech heavily praised the armed services, with Trump encouraging Americans to sign up for the military. Trump also briefly mentioned Betsy Ross while detailing a roll call of influential Americans. Ross has been in the news this week due to Nike’s decision to recall a pair of sneakers with the original Ross flag on them after Colin Kaepernick, whom the company sponsors, said it was associated with an era of slavery. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday tweeted out an image of the 13-star flag to mark Independence Day.” Weekend Reading The left’s new rules for incivility. Dem Senate hopes hinge on Trump tide
BY ALEXANDER BOLTON
Democratic
and Republican lawmakers believe next year’s battle for the Senate
majority largely will hinge on the presidential race — and who wins the
Democratic Party’s nomination. Democrats think they have a shot at winning back the Senate and unified control of Congress, but only if their voters show up in mass to sweep Trump from office. “It depends on who our candidate is,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). “We don’t win the Senate if we don’t win the presidency. Period. Stop. Getting that choice right is more important than anything else.” Read the full story here Trump focuses July 4 speech on celebrating armed forces BY MAGGIE MILLER AND BRETT SAMUELS President Trump on Thursday delivered a speech heavy on military imagery and light on political rhetoric during his “Salute to America” event to mark Independence Day, capping off weeks of controversy with a largely uncontroversial appearance. Ted Cruz destroys Colin Kaepernick for quoting Frederick Douglass out of context Posted: 05 Jul 2019 05:03 AM PDT Professional social justice warrior Colin Kaepernick chose to speak out against America and the 4th of July by invoking Frederick Douglass. He quoted him out of context to support his premise that America is a terrible place and accompanied the quote with imagery of our past slavery sins. But as many know, Douglass was a […] The post Ted Cruz destroys Colin Kaepernick for quoting Frederick Douglass out of context appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
‘The Nevers’ director Joss Whedon goes unhinged and anti-Trump for 4th of July Posted: 04 Jul 2019 11:43 PM PDT Hollywood is a cesspool of unhinged leftism. That’s news to nobody who’s paying attention. But it’s still disconcerting when people’s whose work I respected forces me to put them on my No-Watch list. Director Joss Whedon is the latest talent to showcase his combination of unjustified anger and ignorance. Since it reads like a drunken rant, […] The post ‘The Nevers’ director Joss Whedon goes unhinged and anti-Trump for 4th of July appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Seized Iranian tanker: 3 lies, 3 controversies, and 3 huge questions left to be answered Posted: 04 Jul 2019 05:12 PM PDT The events surrounding the capture this morning of an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar have caused a major international stir as the Middle East nation continues to try to do anything it can to destabilize the region and the world. Though news reports and analyses have been relatively consistent, there are still major questions that […] The post Seized Iranian tanker: 3 lies, 3 controversies, and 3 huge questions left to be answered appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Ex-NYPD commissioner calls on FBI to name Antifa as a terror group Posted: 04 Jul 2019 08:55 AM PDT Antifa is a domestic terrorist organization. They may not be officially named as one, but they clearly should be. Their attack on Andy Ngo and others in Portland last weekend appalled many, but because they’re already associated with terrorism, nobody who’s been paying attention was shocked that it happened. These masked cowards have no boundaries […] The post Ex-NYPD commissioner calls on FBI to name Antifa as a terror group appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Tucson CBP Chief Roy Villareal gives tour of ‘concentration camp’ Posted: 04 Jul 2019 08:16 AM PDT Are migrants being forced to drink from toilets, as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claims? Are conditions so bad at migrant detention centers that they need to be shut down and CBP must be eliminated, as Ilhan Omar says? Or is border patrol doing the best it can with the funding Congress gives it to make migrants being […] The post Tucson CBP Chief Roy Villareal gives tour of ‘concentration camp’ appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
It’s time for patriots to make an example out of Nike Posted: 04 Jul 2019 07:35 AM PDT Former NFL quarterback and social justice warrior Colin Kaepernick has an excuse for finding the Betsy Ross American flag to be racist. He’s an idiot. He lucked into a sweet deal with Nike because he stirred up controversy when he was benched for never living up to his potential as a quarterback, then rode his subsequent […] The post It’s time for patriots to make an example out of Nike appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Ilhan Omar wants CBP eliminated, proving the open borders goals of radical progressives Posted: 04 Jul 2019 06:47 AM PDT Ask one of the Democratic Socialists in Congress whether or not they’re for open borders and they’ll change the subject. Piece together everything they’re saying and all the policies they’re proposing and it’s clear they’re 100% in favor of open borders. The latest stab at achieving their goal comes from Representative Ilhan Omar. When she’s […] The post Ilhan Omar wants CBP eliminated, proving the open borders goals of radical progressives appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |

07/05/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Aggrieved We Stand; Free Speech; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on Jul 05, 2019 08:58 am Hello, it’s Friday, July 5, 2019, the day of the week when I pass along an inspiring quotation. I’ve been writing all week about the Battle of Gettysburg, so for this morning’s motivational, I chose an observation from a U.S. Army veteran of that great battle. His name is Theodore Gerrish, and he fought with the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment under Col. Joshua Chamberlain at Little Round Top and several other bloody Civil War engagements. First, though, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Nike and Betsy Ross’ Flag: The Left Salutes Tribalism. Steve Cortes weighs in on the controversy that clouded America’s celebration of its birth. A Delusive Assurance That All Is Well on Campus. Peter Berkowitz responds to recent comments by the president of Columbia University that free speech is not under siege at U.S. colleges. Mueller’s Own Report Undercuts Its Russia-Meddling Claims. In RealClearInvestigations, Aaron Maté reports that the special counsel’s headline assertions of the Kremlin helping secure a Trump victory are unsupported by his evidence. “Solving” Climate Change Sans Cost/Benefit Analysis Is a Mistake. In RealClearMarkets, Aaron Brown warns that a sense of urgency must not outweigh measured thinking. * * * “The Killer Angels,” Michael Shaara’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1974 historical novel about Gettysburg, introduced a new generation of Americans to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Until then, the Maine college-professor-turned-Union-Army-officer had been largely forgotten except by Civil War buffs. In his own lifetime, however, Chamberlain had attained great prominence after the war. He’d led the 20th Maine Volunteers bravely and capably not only at Gettysburg, but at Fredericksburg, the Second Battle of Petersburg, the Wilderness, the Battle of Five Forks, and had been present at Lee’s surrender at Appomattox. Chamberlain was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism at Little Round Top, promoted to brigadier general by Ulysses S. Grant, and was grievously wounded at Petersburg, which debilitated him for the rest of his life. Nonetheless, he returned home to Maine where he was feted and praised and encouraged to run for political office. He followed this siren song, winning four one-year terms as governor of his state, and then became president of Bowdoin College, where he’d taught before the war. Along the way, Chamberlain was occasionally accused of perhaps exaggerating his role at Gettysburg, or to be more precise, minimizing the contributions of others. He wouldn’t be the first, or last, U.S. politician to inflate his own war record. Yet arguing about who deserves credit for a decision to hold a hill or lead a bayonet charge can be unseemly, especially when there is no question that every man in this all-volunteer unit behaved courageously and decisively. Anyway, as historian Timothy J. Orr has written, for the majority of the men of the 20th Maine, “a survivor’s conscience was its own reward.” For evidence of the truth of this statement, we can consult the memoirs of Theodore Gerrish, who enlisted in the 20th Maine as a teenager. Young Ted Gerrish’s first sustained combat experience had come at Gettysburg, only two weeks after his 17th birthday. He had not yet turned 18 when he was wounded at The Wilderness. And here is what he wrote after the war: “I would rather have my boy stand by my grave and say, ‘My father was wounded in the Wilderness, and fought with Phil. Sheridan at Five Forks, and saw Lee surrender at Appomattox,’ than to have him say that I was a millionaire or a member of the United States Senate.” And that’s the quote of the week. Carl M. The Noble Ideals of America’s FoundingAmidst
the fireworks and cookouts, America’s birthday party is infused with
the inspiring rhetoric from our nation’s founding document. The
Declaration of Independence reminds us that we are all created equal and
endowed by our Creator with “certain unalienable rights.” These include
“Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”Many
Americans mistakenly believe that these inspiring words rallied the
nation to fight for its independence. But that’s not how it happened. In
reality, it was a case of the culture leading and the politicians
lagging behind– the Second Continental Congress simply ratified what had
already happened.The
first shots in the War for Independence were fired at Lexington and
Concord 15 months before the Declaration of Independence was issued. In
fact, by the time the political leaders acted, a majority of the British
governors had already been forced to flee the new nation.Still,
the actions of the Continental Congress were very significant. In
giving voice to the public mood, they articulated a new view about the
proper role of government. It was not to serve the king but to secure
individual rights and freedoms. And, the people were in charge–
governments derive their only “just powers from the consent of the
governed.”As the
Congress set about defining these noble ideals, the leaders recognized
the importance of building
consensus to achieve unity of purpose. It took more than a year of
wrangling before most delegates were willing to support a call for
independence.However, a
simple majority was not enough for advocates of independence. They
wanted consensus. So, they continued debating and addressing concerns
until a unanimous vote could be obtained. That happened on July 2, 1776.
Twelve colonies voted for independence, and New York abstained. Two
days later—on July 4, 1776–Congress approved an edited version of the
Declaration of Independence.The
desire to find common ground and unify the colonies was essential for
the wartime effort. But it also gave our Declaration of Independence the
ability to have an impact across the centuries. There’s no doubt that the nation has struggled to live up to its
noble ideals, especially with regards to slavery and institutionalized
racism. But expressing the ideals clearly gave us something to long for
and seek to achieve. And reaching for them has helped us to overcome our
nation’s deepest failing and original sin.Within
five years of its passage, the ideals expressed in the Declaration led
the Massachusetts’ State Supreme Court to outlaw slavery. Four score
years later, Southern states provoked a Civil War because they objected
to the noble ideal that we were all free and equal. Blessedly, that
rebellion failed.A
century after the Civil War, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. reminded us
that the Declaration was “a promise that all men, yes, black men
as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”King added that “Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.” That is our ongoing task as a nation. Our
nation has never been—and never will be—perfect. But our founding
ideals remain a noble beacon of hope for all Americans to follow.Read Scott’s Other Recent Columns

POLITICO Playbook: The real July fireworks show: Joe vs. Kamala
By JAKE SHERMAN, ANNA PALMER and DANIEL LIPPMAN
07/05/2019 09:13 AM EDT
Presented by The Government of Qatar
DRIVING THE DAY
JOBS BULLETIN … BLOOMBERG: “U.S. Jobs Rise Above-Forecast 224,000, Diluting Fed-Cut Case”: “U.S. hiring rebounded in June and topped all estimates of economists, a sign of labor-market strength that may ease calls for a Federal Reserve interest-rate cut. Stock futures fell while Treasury yields and the dollar advanced.
“Payrolls climbed 224,000 after a downwardly revised 72,000 advance the prior month, according to a Labor Department report Friday. The jobless rate ticked up to 3.7% from a half-century low of 3.6% while average hourly earnings increased 3.1% from a year earlier, slightly less than projected.” Bloomberg
A QUICK CAMPAIGN BITE THAT WILL GET ATTENTION … JOE BIDEN to CHRIS CUOMO on CNN, on Kamala Harris: “I was prepared for them to come after me, but I wasn’t prepared for the person coming at me the way she came at — she knew Beau, she knows me, I don’t — anyway, I — but here’s the deal.
“What I do know — and it’s the good and the bad news, the American people think they know me and they know me. Since that occurred, I had the most sought-after endorsement for the mayor of Atlanta, a black woman who is a great leader, endorse me. I’ve had numerous members of a Black Caucus endorse me.” The clip, begins around 5 minutes
— YES, that’s Joe Biden referring to Kamala Harris as “the person.”
BIDEN on a possible female VP: “I think it’d be great to have a female VP, and if I don’t win it’d be great to have a female president. But the question is whose issues are best prepared in their wheelhouse, they’ve demonstrated that they know how to deal with them.”
ALSO: BIDEN on his politics: “Look. Center left, that’s where I am. Where it’s not is way left. Now look — but that’s what we can find out, that’s what this debate is about.”
HOW TRUMP’S FOURTH OF JULY PLAYED … “With Flyovers and Flags, Trump Plays M.C. for the Fourth” … WAPO: “A divided America gathers as Trump puts stamp on Fourth” … NYT A1 … WSJ: “Trump Delivers Elaborate Fourth of July Event Showcasing Military”
— A HEADLINE ON THE POST’S FRONT PAGE: “Military spectacle, and nonpartisan performance”
NANCY COOK: “Producer-in-chief puts on a 4th of July show — with emphasis on the military”: “President Donald Trump stood before the fabled Lincoln Memorial on the Fourth of July and, as the producer-in-chief, sought to place himself at the center of the nation’s history.
“With subdued remarks, which touched on everything from the founding of the country to the civil rights movement to America’s ingenuity and its military, the president for the first time in recent history made himself the center of Washington, D.C.’s longstanding, non-partisan Independence Day celebration.
“To buttress any criticism that military leaders did not support the event, Trump at one point called up to the stage Acting Secretary of Defense Mark Esper and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Joseph Dunford. The two men awkwardly flanked Trump as he delivered part of his speech in the rain.
“The event was punctuated by flyovers of U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy aircrafts, the president’s own plane, and the Blue Angels, which closed out the speech. Part pep talk, part rambling history lesson, the president’s roughly 45-minute speech attempted to highlight Americans’ grit and resilience.” POLITICO … Video of Trump’s speech
TRUMP’S ONE BIG OOPSIE … USA TODAY: “‘Our Army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over airports,’ Trump said of the fighting force created by the Continental Congress in 1775. There was no air travel in 18th Century America.” USA Today
WHILE YOU WERE GRILLING … “Trump administration scrambles to save citizenship question on census,” by WaPo’s Tara Bahrampour, Josh Dawsey, Matt Zapotosky and William Wan: “Spurred on by President Trump, government lawyers scrambled Thursday to find a legal path to add a controversial citizenship question to the 2020 Census, despite their conclusions in recent days that no such avenue exists.
“Census officials and lawyers at the Justice and Commerce departments scrapped holiday plans and spent their Independence Day seeking new legal rationales for a citizenship question that critics say could create a steep undercount of immigrants, which could limit federal funding to some communities and skew congressional redistricting to favor Republicans.
“A federal judge in Maryland overseeing one of three lawsuits on the citizenship question has given the Trump administration until 2 p.m. Friday to explain how it intends to proceed. The printing of census forms continued Thursday, according to administration officials.” WaPo
Good Friday morning.
FOR YOUR RADAR — “Iran threatens British shipping in retaliation for tanker seizure,” by Reuters’ Kate Holton in London and Parisa Hafezi in Dubai: “An Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander threatened on Friday to seize a British ship in retaliation for the capture of an Iranian supertanker in Gibraltar by Royal Marines.’If Britain does not release the Iranian oil tanker, it is the authorities duty to seize a British oil tanker,’ Mohsen Rezai said on Twitter.
“The Gibraltar government said the crew on board the supertanker Grace 1 were being interviewed as witnesses, not criminal suspects, in an effort to establish the nature of the cargo and its ultimate destination. British Royal Marines abseiled onto the ship off the coast of the British territory on Thursday and seized it. They landed a helicopter on the moving vessel in pitch darkness.” Reuters

FROM 30,000 FEET — “It’s Not Just the White House in 2020. The Power to Draw Maps Is Also at Stake,” by NYT’s Mitch Smith and Timothy Williams in Dallas: “While much of the country’s attention is focused on presidential politics, the gerrymandering ruling last week instantly raised the stakes for the nation’s state legislative races, which are often overlooked by voters, but can shape the course of policy from abortion rights to education.
“Yet this cycle of legislative elections carries added significance: In most states, the political party that wins control of the legislature gains the power to draw once-a-decade maps setting district boundaries for state and congressional elections after a new census count.
“Acutely aware of that prize, which offers a chance to tilt political power further in one party’s favor, Republicans and Democrats are starting campaigns early, knocking on doors and rallying donors with the pitch that a tiny statehouse election in suburban Dallas or coastal Virginia could have national reverberations.” NYT
A message from The Government of Qatar:
Qatar and the U.S. have a strong counter-terrorism relationship. One component of that relationship is the Al Udeid Air Base, which houses over 11,000 soldiers and is central to U.S. operations in the Persian Gulf.
2020 WATCH — DAVID SIDERS in Independence, Iowa: “Joe Biden on Thursday dismissed the school busing controversy between him and Kamala Harris as a dated issue that ‘99 percent’ of Americans are unfamiliar with, while asserting he is still “way ahead” in the Democratic presidential campaign. Describing himself as an ‘overwhelming supporter of civil rights and civil liberties,’ he said, ‘My record stands for itself.’
“‘I don’t have to atone,’ Biden told reporters after darting through an Independence Day parade in Iowa.” POLITICO
— NYT’S JONATHAN MARTIN and KATIE GLUECK, also in Independence, Iowa: “Joe Biden and Kamala Harris Bring Their Debate-Stage Fight to Iowa”: “[Biden] also repeatedly made clear that he was irritated at being targeted for positions he had held more than four decades ago. … ‘Busing is something 99 percent of the American people don’t even know what we’re talking about,’ he argued. …
“Mr. Biden said he was satisfied with his debate performance, which was widely criticized. He dismissed several polls taken in the aftermath of the back-to-back forums that show his once-solid lead evaporating. ‘I’m still way ahead,’ he said.” NYT
— AN EXPLAINER on the Biden-Harris busing throwdown, via WSJ’s Tarini Parti and Joshua Jamerson. WSJ
— BETO’S BELLY FLOP … “Reeling O’Rourke seeks a way forward,” by David Siders in Independence, Iowa: “He got battered in his first presidential debate. His poll numbers have sunk to low single digits. Glowing press coverage has given way to questions about how long he can hang on. Beto O’Rourke’s candidacy today is almost an inversion of what it was at the start of his campaign less than four months ago.” POLITICO
— “Buttigieg responds to South Bend question: ‘Racism is not going to help us,’” by Daniel Strauss in Carroll, Iowa
— ICYMI … CNN’s @rebeccabuck: “Rosario Dawson is joining her bf Cory Booker for campaign events in Nevada [Thursday], per @sabrinasingh24. This marks Dawson’s first time on the trail with Booker.”

KAMALA HARRIS SPEAKS … DES MOINES REGISTER COLUMNIST REKHA BASU: “Kamala Harris, ruthless but nurturing, hand-cuts each french fry, has husband’s ex to dine”: “Her mother may not have had ‘the talk’ with her that black parents often must to fortify their kids for prejudice they’re likely to face. But Kamala identified as a black American, albeit one who ate Indian-style okra fried with mustard seeds, and Creole-style okra with sausage and dried shrimp. There was prejudice. A neighbor kid wasn’t allowed to play with her because of her race.
“‘My mother raised us as black girls,’ she said. Especially after her parents divorced when she was 7, ‘she wanted to make sure we knew our black culture.’ … Some Democrats say they’re hungry for a real progressive in the White House. Harris acknowledges she’s not about ‘drastic change.’” Des Moines Register

JAVAD ZARIF PROFILE — “He Enjoys American Coffee and Restaurants. Is He a Credible Negotiator for Iran?” by the NYT’s Farnaz Fassihi and David Kirkpatrick: “Now, with the nuclear deal on the brink of collapse, with the Trump administration reimposing crushing sanctions on Iran, and with Tehran threatening to restart elements of its nuclear program, Mr. Zarif is coming under renewed fire not only from hard-liners in Tehran but also from Washington. White House officials say that President Trump has requested sanctions specifically against the Iranian foreign minister, stirring debate in both countries about the administration’s intentions. …
“In an extensive email exchange, Mr. Zarif said he felt little personal risk from American sanctions. ‘Everyone who knows me knows that I or my family do not own any property outside Iran,’ he wrote. ‘I personally do not even have a bank account outside Iran. Iran is my entire life and my sole commitment. So I have no personal problem with possible sanctions.’” NYT
A message from The Government of Qatar:
the U.S.-Qatar defense relationship is integral to achieving peace and stability in the Middle East.
THOSE WACKY RUSSIANS — “Russian state-run media took Trump’s July 4 event as an opportunity to ‘troll’ the U.S.,” by WaPo’s Amie Ferris-Rotman and Kayla Epstein
THE MORE YOU KNOW — NYT’S JAMES BARRON: “In the 1990s, Donald J. Trump tried to buy Davids Island, which is across from [Albert] Sutton’s Columbia Island, but ended up abandoning plans to build condominiums or townhouses there (and losing a $500,000 deposit).
“More recently, there were rumors that Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka was interested in Rat Island, two and a half acres off City Island in the Bronx, according to Roland Veit, a coffee trader who became one of its two owners. He said she did not appear at the auction at which the other owner, Alex Schibli, snapped it up for $176,000.” NYT
THE PROJECTED HIGH in most of Anchorage, Alaska, today is 83, just two degrees shy of the all-time record. … And yesterday it hit 90 — yikes! — in one location. NYT … Weather Channel forecast
MEDIAWATCH — “Mad Magazine will vanish from newsstands after 67 years,” by CNN’s Rob McLean and Michelle Lou: “The seminal humor publication will no longer be available on newsstands after its August issue, according to a person familiar with the matter. After that, issues will be available only via comic book stores and subscriptions, the source said. … The source indicated that issues after No. 10 of its current volume will reprint earlier material with new covers. However, the magazine will continue to publish its end-of-year special, books and special collections.”

REMEMBERING LONN TAYLOR … WAPO’S MATT SCHUDEL: “Lonn Taylor, a Smithsonian Institution historian who was an authority on ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ — both the national anthem and the flag that inspired it — and later became known as a colorful storyteller about life in Texas, died June 26 at his home in Fort Davis, Tex. He was 79. …
“One of Mr. Taylor’s most renowned projects involved the U.S. flag that flew at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry after a battle in the War of 1812. … Mr. Taylor did much of the primary research on the history of the flag, which was sewn by Mary Pickersgill of Baltimore, and on [Francis Scott] Key’s composition of what became the national anthem. He published a book about the flag in 2000 and delivered a lecture, which he called ‘Stalking “The Star-Spangled Banner”: An Adventure in Research.’” WaPo

A message from The Government of Qatar:
Next week, President Donald Trump plans to meet with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, at the White House. The two are expected to discuss a range of issues pertaining to U.S. interests in the Middle East including the ongoing international pressure on Iran to discontinue its nuclear programs. Qatar has a strong record of counter-terrorism efforts, and the U.S.- Qatar defense relationship is integral to the ongoing War on Terror. Central to much of The President and The Emir’s discussion will be the Al Udeid Air Base, one of the largest U.S. military bases outside of the U.S. Al Udeid hosts more than 11,000 American and Coalition military personnel and has been a primary launch site for air attacks against ISIS. It is an increasingly important component in the U.S.’s ongoing military operations in the Persian Gulf.
