Wednesday, May 29, 2019 EU Elections “The European Union’s traditional center splintered in the hardest-fought European Parliament elections in decades, with the far right and pro-environment Greens gaining ground on Sunday after four days of a polarized vote.” AP News “Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party romped to victory… with both Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservatives and the opposition Labour Party losing support across the country.” Reuters From the Left The left is relieved to see pro-environmentalists make headway, but worried about the demise of centrism and rise of the far right. “Underscoring the growing demand for bold climate action that has found expression in global youth-led strikes, marches and civil disobedience over the past year, Green parties across Europe had their strongest-ever EU parliamentary election performance after running on a platform of transformative environmental change.” Jake Johnson, Salon “The Greens’ success can represent a positive turning point in European politics, if the new political energy to confront climate change is channeled into effective reforms rather than the overhyped preoccupations that sometimes animate European environmental activism.” Editorial Board, Washington Post Overall, “the results delivered the heartening news that Europeans still care about Europe. Europe’s populist parties had wanted to make the elections a dagger in the heart of the bloc… [They] did increase their share of seats, from 20 percent to a robust 25 percent, but fell short of the landslide many had feared… Yet the results also showed Europe more polarized than ever. Those who wanted to support the European Union usually voted for smaller parties, like the Greens or Liberals, and voters on the right often went further right, all but abandoning the mainstream center-left and center-right parties that have controlled the European Parliament for years.” Editorial Board, New York Times In the UK, “voters are definitely unhappy with how their leaders have handled Brexit. But it’s not clear what they want to do differently… One way to resolve this confusion would be to conduct another general election before the next scheduled vote in May 2022… If there was a general election tomorrow, Nigel Farage wouldn’t become prime minister—despite leading two different parties to astonishing results in European elections, he has failed in each of his seven attempts to win a seat in Parliament. Still, neither of the main parties wants to test if eighth time’s the charm.” June Thomas, Slate “Not long ago, many mainstream politicians and pundits viewed the far right as little more than a protest movement: People voted against the establishment in European elections to send a message, but no one really wanted these politicians to try their hand at governing. These parties were not seen as serious about policy; they were just playing politics. Now, there is no choice but to admit that the populist far right is becoming a permanent feature of European politics.” Ivan Krastev, New York Times “The far-right party led in about three-quarters of all French départements, earning particularly strong support in parts of the country reeling from unemployment and deindustrialization… Far-right parties also saw strong results in Poland, Hungary, and Italy. Some well-meaning liberals have cheered the fact that these forces didn’t do even better—especially in Germany, where the Alternative for Germany party won just 10 percent of the vote. Still, with nationalists topping the polls in two of Europe’s three main founding nations, it’s hard to see how any of this is worth celebrating. The center may be holding, but it’s not on solid ground.” Cole Stangler, The Nation Some argue, “It was the political elites that made the populist radical right the dominant force in the political debate, adopting its issues and its frames. If the liberal democratic politicians want to, they can make this the turning point in European politics. But for that they don’t need just the ‘containment’ of populism, they also need a coherent and convincing liberal democratic vision. And there, the European elections did not provide much good news.” Cas Mudde, The Guardian From the Right The right sees the election results as a repudiation of the status quo, and the success of the Brexit party as an indication that many Britons are impatient with the Brexit delay. The EU seeks “to centralize the power and sovereignty of 27 nation-states in European institutions without solving their existing democracy deficit; to replace their independent budgetary arrangements with a single European fiscal policy without the power of tax collection; to create a common European defense structure separate from NATO without increasing anyone’s defense expenditure; to replace fossil fuels with renewables to solve climate change without massive regulation, and a realistic plan to prevent a huge rise in energy costs for industry and consumers… “It is sometimes said that the error of socialists is not that they have no faith in capitalism but that they have almost boundless faith in it. They think it can bear any burden they place on it and still stagger on delivering the goods. Modern European statesmen feel the same way about their citizens. The populists remind them they’re wrong. And they haven’t gone away… We could see the elections as a competition between two rising insurgent political forces — each trying not to let a good crisis go to waste: the populists using the migration crisis as an organizing principle, the Greens and the Liberals doing the same with the climate crisis. Which group will win probably depends on which crisis ultimately proves to be the more genuinely frightening one to the voters.” John O’Sullivan, National Review Some posit that “while no single party, establishment or skeptic, commands a majority in the new parliament, the establishment types are still stronger. A coalition of center-right conservatives and center-liberals, or Greens, or some other combination, can maintain the broad lines of what has been the mainstream Euro-establishment program, based on the principle of a single market. None of the rebels, except the British ones, favor leaving the EU. They want to reform the Union from within, and they have various notions of what this entails. The establishment will be able to play on their needs and national interests.” Roger Kaplan, American Spectator “In most countries, European themes were eclipsed by domestic fights. Despite French President Emmanuel Macron’s best efforts, the campaign in France reflected the country’s domestic malaise. For understandable reasons, the debate in the United Kingdom ended up being exclusively about Brexit. And in Poland, much energy was channeled into a discussion of LGBTQI issues and of sex abuse scandals in the church. For pro-EU (and anti-EU) forces, the lesson is simple: Local context matters, there are no one-size-fits-all solutions, and there can be no substitute for taking domestic politics seriously.” Dalibor Rohac, Politico “The failure to pull off a timely Brexit was most likely on the minds of many [in Britain] as they went grudgingly to the ballot box. It helps explain why Nigel Farage’s Brexit party, which is only six weeks old, won 31.6 percent of the vote, and why the Lib Dems, back from the political wilderness, came in second with 20.3 percent. Labour came third. The Tories came fifth. This was a protest vote for many fed up with the two main parties, clearly. What is remarkable is just how many.” Madelein Kearns, National Review “Elections have consequences. And failing to execute a mandate from an election has consequences too, as both Conservatives and Labour discovered in the UK’s EU elections. Despite only being weeks old and largely without a policy portfolio, the Brexit party won almost a third of the vote, outstripping the UK’s two main parties — combined… voters just showed how little patience they have with parties that don’t deliver on their promises.” Ed Morrissey, Hot Air On the bright side… Massachusetts man says someone broke into his home … and cleaned it. Good morning, Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day. At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day. You can listen live here. A Reminder That Some Journalists Are Lazy Idiots Who Progressives Spoon Feed A whole lot of journalists are lazy progressive hipsters who hang out around the same people who think the same things and are, as a result, easily manipulated and played. Also, many of them are so liberal and have so many biases that it makes it even easier for progressives to spoon feed stories to journalists. With some solid exceptions, an unfortunate number of journalists at most news organizations will gladly and repeatedly take pre-packaged stories from progressive interest groups and turn them into big stories. It’s why the New York Times ran those stupid stories about Marco Rubio’s tickets in 2016. It is why much of the national press is breathlessly reporting that Netflix is threatening to leave Georgia over its fetal heartbeat law. There’s just one problem — Netflix made no such threat. This is all pre-packaged PR by a progressive PR firm and reporters, already more likely than not to be biased in favor of abortion rights, are falling all over themselves to report it. Tornados Strike the Midwest Parts of the Midwest look like warzones after a series of tornados devastated the region. Monday marked the 11th straight day with at least eight tornadoes in the U.S., tying the 1980 record for the longest such stretch in history. “Storm reports posted online by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center showed that 14 suspected tornadoes touched down in Indiana, 11 in Colorado and nine in Ohio,” reports the AP. “Six were reported in Iowa, five in Nebraska, four in Illinois and three in Minnesota, with one in Idaho.” BuzzFeed rounded up heartbreaking images showing the devastation. Western Ohio was hit especially hard, with cars flipped over, roofs ripped off schools, and apartment buildings destroyed. Dozens were sent to the emergency room, and an 81-year-old was killed after a tornado blew a parked car into his house. President Trump has been in touch with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, and tweeted that his administration, “fully supports the people of the great State of Ohio as they begin the cleanup and recovery.” An Ohio weatherman had no patience for “pathetic” viewers who voiced on social media they were upset that tornado warnings interrupted their “Bachelorette” viewing. Watch. (FTR, I’m on his side!) Abortion Laws Go Before the Supreme Court “The Supreme Court sidestepped major abortion cases Tuesday, letting stand a lower-court ruling that Indiana can’t ban abortions for the purpose of selecting sex or race, or to avoid having a disabled child,” reportsThe Wall Street Journal. “It did, however, allow the state to regulate the disposal of fetal remains.” The regulation the court allows to stand gives women in Indiana “the right to determine the final disposition of the aborted fetus.” If women opt out of making that decision, abortion facilities are required to “bury the remains or cremate them by incineration by a crematory.” As Vice President Mike Pence said in a statement, the law “safeguards the sanctity of human life by requiring that remains of aborted babies be treated with respect and dignity.” In declining to take up the question of abortion based on sex, race, or disability, the court punted on some of the most divisive (and important) questions surrounding abortion. In Iceland, for example, almost 100 percent of babies diagnosed with Down Syndrome are aborted. “Although the court declines to wade into these issues today, we cannot avoid them forever,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote. (If you’re interested in learning about the discriminatory history of the birth control and abortion movements, Thomas’ concurrence is worth reading in full.) And finally, in other abortion news, on Saturday, Missouri could become the first state with no abortion clinics, and Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos threatened to pull production out of Georgia if the Heartbeat bill stands. The Creepiness of Your iPhone at Night “What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone,” Apple said in a recent ad. But a privacy experiment by The Washington Post showed “5,400 hidden app trackers guzzle our data — in a single week,” often in the middle of the night. “App trackers are like the cookies on websites that slow load times, waste battery life and cause creepy ads to follow you around the Internet,” The Post explains. “Except in apps, there’s little notice trackers are lurking and you can’t choose a different browser to block them.” “Take the DoorDash app, for example, which The Post found is sending data to nine third-party trackers without your knowledge.” “In the case of DoorDash, one tracker called Sift Science gets a fingerprint of your phone (device name, model, ad identifier and memory size) and even accelerometer motion data to help identify fraud. Three more trackers help DoorDash monitor app performance — including one called Segment that routes onward data including your delivery address, name, email and cell carrier.” “DoorDash’s other five trackers, including Facebook and Google Ad Services, help it understand the effectiveness of its marketing. Their presence means Facebook and Google know every time you open DoorDash.” “The delivery company tells me it doesn’t allow trackers to sell or share our data, which is great. But its privacy policy throws its hands up in the air: ‘DoorDash is not responsible for the privacy practices of these entities,’ it says.” Read the whole investigation here, and learn more about 15 default privacy settings The Post recommends changing in order to protect your privacy and data here. Also, perhaps we should go back to the days of turning off our phones while we sleep. Gillette Gets Woke Again Not long after Gillette came under fire for its woke “toxic masculinity ad,” the men’s grooming company is out with a new ad, this time, showing a dad teaching his transgender son how to shave. While the ad is sure to spark similar backlash on social media, polling suggests the last one calling out harassment and asking for men to be better was actually… a success. And Because It’s Hump Day… The new “Aladdin” still isn’t woke enough for The New York Times. Discredited author Michael Wolff is coming out with another book, but a Mueller spokesperson already discredited it. (Did the MSM learn its lesson? TBD.) Airports under investigation for denying Chic-fil-A on religious grounds. Ellen DeGeneres opens up about being sexually assaulted as a teenager by her stepfather. And finally, extended Memorial Day sales! BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist. |

Good morning,Seventy-one percent (71%) of voters nationwide agree that Socialism means more decisions are made by the government while Capitalism means more decisions are made by each individual. That view is shared by 85% of Republicans, 68% of Independents, and 61% of Democrats. This
data highlights one of the major disconnects between the growing
popularity of the term socialism and the continued unpopularity of
policies associated with the historic ideology of socialism. Most who
have a positive view of Socialism today want less government involvement in the economy. Just 35% who like Socialism favor government ownership of the largest companies. The
survey also found that, in practical terms, 68% believe America’s
commitment to individual freedom means a commitment to capitalism. It’s
important to recognize that the overwhelming majority of voters do not
see socialism and capitalism as competing economic system. And, only 12% of voters have a favorable opinion of Socialism as an economic system. Other data shows that 64% of
voters prefer a government with a system of checks and balances to
protect individual freedom rather than a government that is efficient
that can respond quickly to issues. The
preference for efficiency is more common among younger voters. Still, a
majority of Gen Z (60%) and Millennials (57%) say that the system of
checks and balances is
better. That view is shared by 62% of GenXers, 68% of Baby Boomers, and
75% of the Silent Generation. This is consistent with other data showing that 73% believe freedom is more important than democracy. Finally,
sometimes it’s more important to note things that don’t happen rather
than those that do. Despite all the turbulent news cycles, it has now been more than four months since the President’s Job Approval rating moved in either
direction. Every single day since January 28, the number offering
their approval has stayed within two percentage points of 46%. That, of
course, matches the share of the vote he received in 2016.Next Job Approval update today at 5:00 p.m. Eastern.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott

journalistic) elites who are so proud of their own brilliance that they
never considered that the policies they embrace may not be universally
good for the electorate. Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders jumped into
that vacuum and exceeded early expectations. We’ve seen this played out

REAL CLEAR POLITICS
05/29/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note ’94 Crime Bill; the ‘R’ Word; What JFK Knew By Carl M. Cannon on May 29, 2019 08:41 am Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 29, 2019. Although it’s hard to think of him as an old man because he is forever youthful in our collective memory, John F. Kennedy was born 102 years ago today. Destined to be known in the sprawling Kennedy clan as “Jack,” he was the second of nine children born to Rose and Joseph Kennedy. Their firstborn had been named after his father. Born at home on Beals Street in Brookline, Mass., this second boy was named after the family patriarch: Rose’s father, John Francis Fitzgerald. Known as “Honey Fitz,” Jack Kennedy’s maternal grandfather had been a United States congressman, popular Boston mayor, and rabid Red Sox fan. (Is there any other kind?) Jack Kennedy was not a healthy child. Before turning 3, he was hospitalized with scarlet fever, which was then often fatal. Jack pulled through it, but he was a boy who seemed to catch everything: whooping cough, measles, and chicken pox — at a time when antibiotics were unknown. The family joke was that any mosquito that bit Jack was risking its own life. As he grew older, the second Kennedy child also suffered, in turn, from colitis, ulcers, and a severely ruptured disc that led to lifelong back pain — and the assorted depredations of various doctors who practiced medicine so aggressively it might be called quackery. Jack’s apparent frailty contrasted with that of his athletic and seemingly indestructible older brother, Joe. The brothers, only two years apart, once rammed each other on their bicycles. Joe was unscathed; Jack required 28 stitches. When Joe announced at an early age that he wanted to become the first Catholic president, no one in his family was surprised. But it wasn’t to be: Before any of that generation of Kennedys could enter politics, World War II broke out. Both Joe and Jack enlisted in military service. I’ll have a further word about Jack Kennedy, whom I’ve written about previously on this date, in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. In RealClearWorld, Harold Ford Jr. spotlights events unfolding in Argentina and Brazil, which could reverberate throughout the continent and beyond. * * * Fearless young Joseph Kennedy Jr. did not prove indestructible after all. World War II took him, along with so many others. It almost took Jack, too. Commanding a Navy patrol boat in the Pacific, Lt. John F. Kennedy and his crew were pitched into the water one August night in 1943 after their vessel was rammed and cut in two by a Japanese destroyer. Two sailors in Kennedy’s crew were killed, and several others were injured. Kennedy led his men on a makeshift raft through shark-infested waters to a tiny island; JFK held a life jacket strap in his teeth to make sure that badly burned crew member Patrick McMahon didn’t slip into the depths. Using his Harvard swim team training, Kennedy swam to two other nearby islands, aggravating his bad back in the process. He and his men settled on Olasana Island, which had coconuts and fresh water, and were rescued six days later. For his bravery and leadership, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. He was heroic, yes, but at a time when America was producing heroes every day. Many performed feats of gallantry known only to God or their comrades. Some 405,000 American servicemen never made it home from the war at all. After the war, Jack took the place in Democratic politics that Joseph Kennedy had imagined for his eldest son, and did so with remarkable aptitude. John F. Kennedy never lost an election, running for the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and the White House. He was one of two Navy men plucked out of the Pacific would become president of the United States. Thanks to Laura Hillenbrand, author of “Unbroken,” Americans can starkly envision what their fates would have been if either man had been found first by the enemy. If it all seems fated, it wasn’t, as John F. Kennedy knew more than most. He once deflected praise for being a war hero with a pithy quip — “They sank my boat” — suggesting that being heroic wasn’t his idea, it was simple survival. But as president, he expounded on life’s vagaries at a March 21, 1962 press conference. “Some men are killed in a war and some men are wounded, and some men never leave the country, and some men are stationed in the Antarctic and some are stationed in San Francisco,” he said. “It’s very hard in military or in personal life to assure complete equality. Life is unfair.” So, yes, he knew better than most that gods do not always prevail. He knew this because he had seen war from the inside. John F. Kennedy also believed that if human beings didn’t start learning to settle their differences nonviolently, the horrors of the 20th century would be revisited, and magnified, in the future. “Mankind must put an end to war” is the way he put it during a 1961 address at the U.N., “or war will put an end to mankind.” Carl M. Survival of the Fittest … and Roy Moore – he’s baaaackGetting too much email? Unsubscribe | Manage subscriptionsMeet the Press: First Read <email@mail.nbcnews.com>Wed 5/29/2019 08:35
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: The winnowing of the 2020 Dem field will begin 3 months from now
The Democrats’ presidential field is
guaranteed to become smaller three months from now – at least when it comes to who qualifies to make the debate stage.
The Democratic National Committee
announced this morning that ABC-Univision is slated to host the
third set of debates on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 (if enough candidates make
the threshold to require two nights of debates).
But here’s the hitch:
To qualify for the third round of debates, candidates must hit 2
percent in four qualifying polls released between June 28 and Aug. 28.
That’s up from the current polling threshold of 1 percent.
And they will need to raise money from 130,000 unique individual donors – up from 65,000.
AP Photo/Andrew Harnik
To understand how that new polling requirement will winnow the field,
only NINE Democratic candidates have hit 2 percent or above in just one of the last three qualifying national polls (Fox,
Quinnipiac,
Monmouth).
Those nine: Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, O’Rourke, Klobuchar, Booker and Castro.
That’s it.
And it’s quite likely the 130,000 donor threshold reduces that number even further.
Bottom line:
This means performance at the first two sets of debates in June and
July – where a total of 20 candidates get to participate – will really
matter.
You snooze, you lose. You thrive, you survive.
In addition, this
will force some candidates on the fence to spend early money – either
nationally or in the early states – to boost their poll numbers.
One way to think about this winnowing: It used to be that the August straw poll in Ames, Iowa served as a way to reduce the size of the Republican presidential field.
But this coming August – before the September debate(s) –
Democrats will have their own straw poll of sorts in whether or not they hit/surpass 2 percent.
On Justin Amash’s town hall last night
Few Democrats have
articulated beginning impeachment proceedings against President Trump as
clearly as Michigan Republican Justin Amash.
In his first town hall since coming out in support of impeachment,
Amash fielded nearly 30 questions from a mix of Democrats, Republicans, Amash suporters and Trump supporters, per NBC’s Alex Moe and Leigh Ann Caldwell.
And this might have been the highlight of the night,
as CNN flagged:
“If
you have a society where all we care about is that the other side is
bad, and therefore we don’t have to do the right thing, that society
will break down, and you will have no liberty.”

2020 VISION: Biden says America is less divided today than in the 1970s
At a fundraiser in Houston last night, Joe Biden said:
“America’s less divided today on issues
than when I got to the Senate as a 29-year-old kid. Then we were divided
on everything from war, to the women’s movement, to civil rights,
across the board.”
On the one hand, Biden’s right – when you think about
the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, women’s rights.
On the other hand, that observation is about as relevant to our current politics as a Baby Boomer talking about the 1960s and 1970s: “Hey, America was more divided during the Civil War than today.”
On the campaign trail today: Kamala
Harris remains in South Carolina… Seth
Moulton also stumps in the Palmetto State… Joe Biden attends a
community event in Dallas… And Bernie Sanders holds a rally in Reno,
N.V.
TWEET OF THE DAY: He’s baaaaaack
TWEET OF THE DAY, PART 2: But Trump doesn’t WANT him back.
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 62 percent.
62 percent.
That’s the share of Americans who say they’re
concerned that a U.S. trade war with China will hurt the local economy in their area,
according to a new poll from Monmouth University.
About a third — 34 percent — say they’re very concerned, while an additional 28 percent say they’re “somewhat” concerned.
The same share — 62 percent — say that
American consumers are most likely to bear more of the costs of the tariffs, while just 23 percent say that Chinese producers will absorb the costs.

Building the war chest: The real reason so many Democrats are running for president Posted: 29 May 2019 04:25 AM PDT Does Eric Swalwell really believe he has a chance of winning?
