THE DAILY SIGNAL

May 28, 2019   Good morning from Washington, where one mission for conservatives is to counter the appeal of Medicare for All. Kevin Pham deploys some eye-opening facts. Two other challenges: the media’s deceptive word choices in covering abortion, explored by Jarrett Stepman, and the left’s insistence that immigrants need not assimilate, exposed by Mike Gonzalez. Plus: David Harsanyi on time for liberals to put up or shut up on impeaching the president, Paul Coleman on the truth about persecution of Christians, and Monica Burke and Rachel del Guidice on what’s missing from the movie “Tolkien.”       Commentary Abortion Debate Shows How Media Deploys Language Gymnastics to Serve Left-Wing Goals Here are some of the terms now off-limits for NPR journalists: Pro-life, late-term abortion, fetal heartbeat, partial birth. More Commentary Medicare for All Would Eliminate Americans’ Choices in Health Coverage Where Canadian health care leaves significant room for private health care plans, Medicare for All would preclude a substantial amount of private coverage, leaving essentially cosmetic surgery and experimental drugs. More Commentary Impeach Trump or Go Home, Liberals History didn’t begin in 2016. Every modern president has asserted executive privilege. More Commentary The Real Inclusive Approach to Immigrants The survival of political liberty and a political community depends on a shared culture and the habits of character that protect it. More Analysis This Lawmaker Doubles as a Podcast Host to ‘Take Our Message to the American People’ Rep. Jody Hice, R-Ga., host of a podcast from the House Freedom Caucus, talks about what listeners can expect to hear about the conservative agenda in coming episodes. More Commentary ‘Tolkien’ Paints Vivid Picture of Writer’s Life, but Ignores His Faith For Tolkien, faith was the key to the greatest fairy-story, greater even than his masterful “Lord of the Rings.” To attempt to tell his life story without it, however beautiful the film, means that “Tolkien” is fundamentally incomplete. More Commentary The Media Won’t Say It, but Christians Are the No. 1 Persecuted Group Worldwide When people acknowledge that Jews or Muslims are persecuted for their beliefs but ignore that Christians are being persecuted for theirs, they give us a grossly inaccurate picture of reality. In 1953, historian and educator Hilda Neatby ignited controversy by publishing “So Little for the Mind: An Indictment of Canadian Education.” She wanted to know why otherwise bright high school students entering her classes lacked the reading, writing, and thinking skills necessary for university. And why were the more recent high school graduates faring the worst? Neatby ultimately pinned the blame on John Dewey’s progressive theories of education. “Dewey more than any other single person must be held responsible for the intellectual, cultural, and moral poverty… Read more
See More Opinions Why Is Communism Evil?
(December 20, 2018)

By Trevor Loudon

Communism is not evil because of the estimated 85 million to 100 million deaths caused by Marxist-Leninist regimes. Communism is not evil because of the gulags of the Soviet Union, the labor camps of China, or the killing fields of Cambodia.   After the end of World War II, the United States spent trillions of dollars containing the Soviet Union. But after the Cold War, it was discovered that the United States had overestimated the power of its 40 year nemesis. It turned out that the U.S.S.R.’s economy was only about half the size that the CIA and other agencies had said that it was. Could that be the case with China as well? Is China Weaker Than We Think? POLITICO Playbook: Giuliani wants to be Trump’s No. 1 campaign hatchet man

By ANNA PALMER, JAKE SHERMAN and DANIEL LIPPMAN

Presented by

Rudy Giuliani

DRIVING THE DAY

SCOOP — DARREN SAMUELSOHN: “‘My Rudy’: Trump’s lawyer wants to be the campaign’s No. 1 hatchet man”: “Get ready for more Rudy. Done sparring with Robert Mueller, Donald Trump’s personal attorney is now training his attacks on the president’s reelection rivals. Giuliani plans to meet with the president and his campaign in the coming weeks to discuss pivoting to this new role, which he expects will also include making policy and political connections for the 2020 effort.

“‘We’ll see where they have holes and where they need help,’ Giuliani told POLITICO. ‘I’m available to do a lot of it.’ Giuliani has long served as an all-purpose attack dog for Trump — to mixed results. The president and some of his top aides have occasionally cringed at the lawyer’s frequent off-script messaging and rambling TV appearances that can spark one or more unexpected news cycles. ‘Handling Rudy’s f— ups takes more than one man,’ a White House staffer told POLITICO in January.” POLITICO

— IT’S NOT SURPRISING Giuliani wants to find a way back into the political limelight. He seems to relish the back-and-forth with reporters and cable news circuit. For as often as Giuliani likes to spitball with reporters, others in Trump’s orbit are having to play cleanup. It’s hard to see Trump’s inner circle of campaign aides looking to Giuliani as the missing link in their well-laid plans. Trump’s campaign team is building a much more conventional political operation to compete in 2020 — more structure, more traditional fundraising, less freelancing.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP ABROAD … THE STEP BACK: NYT’S ANNIE KARNI in Tokyo: “Japan Rolled Out the Red Carpet. Trump Veered Off Into Personal Fixations”: “Mr. Trump traveled almost 7,000 miles to become the first foreign leader to meet with Emperor Naruhito since his enthronement this month. The president’s closest ally on the world stage, Mr. Abe, regaled him with golf, a sumo tournament, a cheeseburger lunch and a robatayaki dinner, hoping to cement what the prime minister described as their ‘unshakable bond.’

“Throughout his visit, though, Mr. Trump acted like a man who could never be fully present. From start to finish, his stay in Japan was defined more by his focus on politics at home than diplomacy abroad, expressed as a running refrain posted online seemingly every time he was left alone with his screens.” NYTPOLITICO slideshow of 27 pics of Trump’s Japan trip

SUCH AS … TRUMP’S NEW ATTACK ON BIDEN — @realDonaldTrump: “Super Predator was the term associated with the 1994 Crime Bill that Sleepy Joe Biden was so heavily involved in passing. That was a dark period in American History, but has Sleepy Joe apologized? No!

“Anyone associated with the 1994 Crime Bill will not have a chance of being elected. In particular, African Americans will not be able to vote for you. I, on the other hand, was responsible for Criminal Justice Reform, which had tremendous support, & helped fix the bad 1994 Bill!”

AND IRAN: “Trump says he is not seeking ‘regime change’ in Iran,” by WaPo’s Michael Kranish: “‘We’re not looking for regime change. I want to make that clear,’ Trump said at a joint news conference Monday with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. ‘We’re looking for no nuclear weapons.’” WaPo

MEANWHILE … REUTERS: “Iran sees no prospect of negotiations with U.S.: foreign ministry”: “Asked about Trump’s comments in a news conference in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency: ‘We currently see no prospect of negotiations with America.’ ‘Iran pays no attention to words; What matters to us is a change of approach and behavior.’” Reuters

Good Tuesday morning. The Intercept’s RYAN GRIM, a POLITICO alum, is out today with a new book, “We’ve got People: From Jesse Jackson to AOC, the End of Big Money and the Rise of a Movement.” HUFFPOST has the first excerpt on “Barack Obama, Harry Reid And The Secret History Of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Repeal”$17.76 on Amazon

THE LATEST ON THE STORMS … “Tornados leave trail of destruction across Ohio, Indiana,” by AP’s Angie Wang and John Minchillo in Brookville, Ohio, and Kantele Franko in Columbus, Ohio: “A rapid-fire line of apparent tornadoes tore across Indiana and Ohio overnight, packed so closely together that one crossed the path carved by another. The storms strew debris so thick that at one point, highway crews had to use snowplows to clear an interstate.

“At least half a dozen communities from eastern Indiana through central Ohio suffered damage, according to the National Weather Service, though authorities working through the night had reported no fatalities as of early Tuesday. Some 5 million people were without power early Tuesday in Ohio alone.” AP

— @realDonaldTrump att 4:11 a.m.: “Spoke with @GovStitt of Oklahoma last night from Japan because of the devastating tornadoes. Told him that @FEMA and the federal government are fully behind him and the great people of Oklahoma.”

MEANWHILE … NYT’S CORAL DAVENPORT and MARK LANDLER: “Trump Administration Hardens Its Attack on Climate Science”: “[P]arts of the federal government will no longer fulfill what scientists say is one of the most urgent jobs of climate science studies: reporting on the future effects of a rapidly warming planet and presenting a picture of what the earth could look like by the end of the century if the global economy continues to emit heat-trapping carbon dioxide pollution from burning fossil fuels.

“The attack on science is underway throughout the government. In the most recent example, the White House-appointed director of the United States Geological Survey, James Reilly, a former astronaut and petroleum geologist, has ordered that scientific assessments produced by that office use only computer-generated climate models that project the impact of climate change through 2040, rather than through the end of the century, as had been done previously.” NYT

— YIKES: “‘The demonization of carbon dioxide is just like the demonization of the poor Jews under Hitler,’ said the physicist, William Happer, who serves on the National Security Council as the president’s deputy assistant for emerging technologies.”

2020 WATCH — “Biden campaign confronts enthusiasm gap,” by Marc Caputo and Natasha Korecki: “He’s dominating in the polls, his fundraising is going gangbusters and he’s showing broad support from key political players in the early presidential states.

“So where are the big energetic crowds, the lines around the block to get into Joe Biden’s events? The question is no small matter in a party still recovering from a bitter 2016 defeat — a loss marked by a lack of enthusiasm for an establishment nominee in several critical states.

“Attendance at the former vice president’s launch rally paled next to some of his rivals. In his first Iowa visit, he didn’t match the crowds that greeted Elizabeth Warren or even the less well-known Pete Buttigieg in their initial visits. So far, he’s kept his events to smaller venues where there’s little danger of empty seats.

“In the eyes of Biden’s progressive critics — as well as President Donald Trump, who has publicly mocked him for it — the seeming lack of excitement or teeming masses at his events is a leading indicator of a lack of passion for his candidacy.” POLITICO

“Joe Biden eyes San Francisco fundraising tour, setting up a Bay Area battleground for 2020 Democratic dollars,” by CNBC’s Brian Schwartz: “Biden backers who are putting together the events include Wade Randlett, CEO of the transportation fuels division of General Biofuels; Steve Westly, founder of tech investment firm The Westly Group; and Denise Bauer, former U.S. ambassador to Belgium under former President Barack Obama. …

“All three organizers were involved with bundling for Obama when he ran for president in 2008 and during his reelection bid in 2012. Each helped raise as much as $500,000 in both cycles, data from the Center for Responsive Politics shows.”

— HOLLY OTTERBEIN: “Bernie Sanders’ extreme makeover”: “This time around, the candidate with an aversion to schmoozing and a reputation as a loner in the Senate is bowing to a side of politics he’s long despised. Sanders is making dozens of calls each week to elected officials, labor leaders and party chiefs, according to his aides. In between his rallies, he regularly meets with politicians behind closed doors. And surrogates including Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), the co-chair of his campaign, are aggressively courting House members to get on board.

“All of that is standard fare for a top-tier presidential campaign, but it represents a major shift for Sanders. His willingness to step up his efforts to win institutional support is the latest sign that he recognizes that shunning the Democratic establishment might work for a long-shot outsider campaign, but won’t cut it if he truly wants to win the nomination.” POLITICO

PLAYBOOK READS

BEN SCHRECKINGER: “Amid censorship fears, Trump campaign ‘checking out’ alternative social network”: “The Twitter-like platform was initially hatched last year as a tool for digital news outlets to claw revenue back from big social networks like Facebook. But as those platforms purge some of the internet’s most inflammatory supporters of President Donald Trump over posts deemed dangerous or offensive, Parler has carved out a niche among these banned right-wing influencers — like Gavin McInnes, Laura Loomer and Milo Yiannopoulos.”

TRUMP PLAYS ISRAELI POLITICS — @realDonaldTrump: “Hoping things will work out with Israel’s coalition formation and Bibi and I can continue to make the alliance between America and Israel stronger than ever. A lot more to do!”

— “With 2 Days Left, Israel’s Netanyahu Struggles to Form a Government,” by NYT’s Isabel Kershner in Jerusalem: “With just two days left before the deadline for forming a government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel was struggling Monday to sign up coalition partners, thrusting the country into a political crisis and raising the possibility that it could be forced to hold a new election.

“The drama stemmed from a battle of wills between two political forces that Mr. Netanyahu needs to form a right-wing coalition: the ultra-Orthodox religious parties that won 16 parliamentary seats in the April 9 election, and Avigdor Lieberman’s ultranationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party, which won five seats and whose constituents are mostly secular, Russian-speaking Israelis.

“Having long sparred over issues of religion and state, the sides are now wrestling over legislation to replace a military draft law that exempted ultra-Orthodox men. Mr. Lieberman supports a law that sets modest quotas for enlisting them, which the religious parties oppose.” NYT

FOR YOUR RADAR — “European Greens surge as voters abandon old parties over climate,” by WaPo’s Michael Birnbaum in Brussels, Griff Witte in Berlin and James McAuley in Paris: “European Green parties on Monday were cheering E.U. elections that vaulted them into a kingmaking position of power, as voters abandoned traditional political parties in favor of climate-focused activists in a green wave that swept several countries. …

“In an election for the European Parliament in which far-right, anti-immigration buccaneers also gained modestly to post their best-ever result, the good showing for the Greens may have the bigger impact on policy. The center-left and center-right parties that long jointly ruled the parliament have lost their majority, meaning they will need to depend on Greens and other centrists to advance their agenda.” WaPo

BEYOND THE BELTWAY — “Nation’s first opioid trial could set precedent for massive pharma payouts,” by Paul Demko: “A trial kicking off in Norman, Oklahoma, on Tuesday will provide an unprecedented examination of how the country spiraled into a devastating opioid epidemic — and could indicate to what degree drug companies accused of fueling the crisis will be held responsible in hundreds of other lawsuits still pending across the country.

“Most of the litigation against opioid makers and distributors — involving states, cities, counties and tribes — is wrapped up in a single massive lawsuit overseen by a federal judge in Ohio. But the Oklahoma lawsuit against two manufacturers of prescription painkillers will be the first to reach trial and could establish a precedent for damages paid to communities ravaged by opioids.

“The Oklahoma trial, which will be broadcast online, is expected to last for much of the summer, putting a national spotlight on the opioid crisis, which is still killing 130 people in the United States every day. The testimony will focus on how much manufacturers of highly addictive painkillers are to blame for getting patients hooked on opioids through misleading medical claims and aggressive marketing practices.” POLITICO

— “Illinois Lawmakers Pave Way For Higher Taxes On Richest, Send Plan to Voters,” by Bloomberg’s Elizabeth Campbell and Amanda Albright: “Illinois lawmakers paved the way for higher taxes on the state’s richest residents, approving a constitutional amendment to do away with the flat income tax that will go before voters during next year’s presidential election.

“The state’s House of Representatives on Monday voted to approve a constitutional amendment that would allow for higher tax rates on the top earners, the centerpiece of Governor J.B. Pritzker’s plan to stabilize the worst-rated state’s finances. The state Senate already passed the measure, leaving it poised to go on the November 2020 ballot for voter approval.” Bloomberg

IMMIGRATION FILES — “State Dept. allows elderly Mexicans to visit their undocumented children in the U.S.,” by WaPo’s Kevin Sieff: “Since 2017, officials here have been working with the U.S. State Department to reunite those families for three-week visits in cities and towns across the United States.

“For many here, it is an unlikely American olive branch amid the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. But it has been welcomed by immigrant families grappling with a crisis that has rippled across both countries: The elderly parents of the estimated 5 million undocumented Mexicans in the United States are dying alone in Mexico while their children remain stuck on the other side of the border.” WaPo

VALLEY TALK — “Exclusive: Huawei reviewing FedEx relationship, says packages ‘diverted,’” by Reuters’ Sijia Jiang in Hong Kong: “Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei is reviewing its relationship with FedEx Corp after it claimed the U.S. package delivery company, without detailed explanation, diverted two parcels destined for Huawei addresses in Asia to the United States and attempted to reroute two others.” Reuters

“Facebook says Zuckerberg and Sandberg will defy Canadian subpoena, risking contempt vote,” by CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan and Paula Newton

MEDIAWATCH — “In the Democratic Primary, the Media Hits Are the Message,” by NYT’s James Poniewozik: “Whether they appear on premium cable or Fox News, Instagram or ‘The View,’ the umpteen Democratic candidates have two challenges. One is to figure out what entices news producers to show their clips and what lures voters scrolling their phones to hit play.

“The second, related to the first, is to implicitly argue how they, in a general election, would seize attention from a president who can re-scramble the day’s news lineup by tweeting a mean nickname before breakfast.

“All of this — and the sheer number of candidates vying for attention — has meant new importance for media venues beyond the Sunday morning shows.” NYT

— THE DAILY BEAST’S ASAWIN SUEBSAENG: “For years, [One America News Network] has tried to supplant Fox as a dominant force in conservative media. For the past two years, it has prolifically churned out glowing coverage of the Trump administration and its achievements. OAN’s top executives have beseeched the president on Twitter to forget about Fox and to signal-boost them instead. And in the first year of Trump’s presidency, the network produced a commercial mocking CNN’s ‘Facts First’ apple-and-banana ad campaign, and declaring OAN the ‘Real News.’

“The overt flattery seems to be paying off. Fox News is still the president’s favorite media behemoth. But OAN’s team has been catching his eye. This year, Trump has tuned in more often than ever to OAN, two sources close to him say. There’s been a conspicuous uptick in his public promotion of OAN’s segments, including on his personal Twitter account. And, it appears, he’s even pitching the network to those roaming the halls at Mar-a-Lago.” Daily Beast

President Trump Visits Japan
Friendly relations didn’t necessarily indicate agreement on key issues during the President’s visit to Japan over the weekend.

“The optics and the rhetoric of President Trump’s state visit to Japan aimed to show two allies at their closest in history, at the start of a new Japanese emperor’s reign. Trump is the first state guest to visit since Emperor Naruhito ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne on May 1. On Sunday, he and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe shared a round of golf, attended a sumo wrestling match and had a barbecue dinner.

But on Monday, a joint press conference with the two leaders revealed the two countries struggling to manage differences over a raft of policy issues — in particular, bilateral trade, North Korea and Iran.”

More at NPR and photos available (yes, of the sumo wrestling) at Politico.

How WWII History is Taught Around the World
“Kasey Turcol has just 75 minutes to explain to her high school students the importance of D-Day — and if this wasn’t the 75th anniversary of the turning point in World War II, she wouldn’t devote that much time to it. D-Day is not part of the required curriculum in North Carolina — or in many other states.

Turcol reminds her students at Crossroads FLEX High School in Cary, North Carolina, that D-Day was an Allied victory that saved Europe from Nazi tyranny and that the young men who fought and died were barely older than they are. She sprinkles her lesson with details about the number of men, ships, and planes involved in the landing at Normandy while adding a few lesser-known facts about a Spanish spy and a deadly military practice conducted six months earlier in England.

In the U.S. and other countries impacted by the events on June 6, 1944, historians and educators worry that the World War II milestone is losing its resonance with today’s students.”

An Important Film for the Times
Finally, as many of you know, my parents fled Communist-controlled Poland in the 1970s, eventually settling in the land of the free. It was a great honor to collaborate with my father on this review of the Polish movie Cold War, which is set in the time and place of his childhood and highlights the personal horrors of the Communist system.

“Conservatives often struggle to portray the true cost of socialism in terms of freedom and wasted opportunity. For a generation that doesn’t remember the Cold War or the joyful celebrations when the Berlin Wall collapsed, communism’s tremendous personal cost to millions of lives is no longer obvious.

Every so often, a film comes along that shows the depth of those costs in a poignant and beautiful way. So it is with the movie ‘Cold War,’ a masterpiece from Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski, nominated for three Academy Awards and now available to stream on Amazon (free for Prime members). The movie tells the story of a couple caught between the iron grip of Communism on their home country and their artistic ambitions, deprived of the chance to be both authentic and free.”

The film is well worth seeing and is available to stream on Amazon here.

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Forty-nine percent (49%) of voters nationwide believe that President Trump is at least as ethical as most politicians. Fifty-nine percent (59%)  believe former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is that ethical. The results highlight the depth of the partisan divide in America today.82% of Republicans believe the president meets that ethical standard and 86% of Democrats say the same about Clinton.78% of Democrats consider Trump less ethical than most politicians and 77% of Republicans say the same about Clinton.Among Independents, 49% believe Trump is as ethical as a typical politician. Fifty-five percent (55%) believe that is true of Clinton. On another subject, most voters support a wide range of actions to stem the tide of illegal immigration. At the top of the list: 70% favor strict punishment for companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. A ScottRasmussen.com survey also found that 63% support having the U.S. military defend the southern border. 63% want strict punishment for  landlords that knowingly rent apartments to illegal immigrants; 60% think we should cut off federal funding for sanctuary cities; and, 53% want a wall built across the southern border. The partisan divide is visible here as well. A majority of Republicans support each of the above proposals. A majority of Democrats are opposed. A majority of Independent voters support each initiative except the border wall. On that, they are evenly divided.Looking at the role of government, 60% of voters believe that the power of the federal government is a bigger threat to the United States than the power of large corporations.Women, by a 66% to 34% margin, are more worried about the federal government. Men are more evenly divided.Forty-four percent (44%) of voters prefer our current complex mix of federal, state, and local governments. Just 27% believe it would be better if we simply had one national government to establish uniform rules across the country. When regulations are needed, 61% believe they should be set by state (39%) or local governments (22%). However, 39% believe they should be set at the federal level.Among the most liberal voters, 54% believe regulations should generally be set by the federal government. MEET THE PRESS

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann FIRST READ: Trump sides with an authoritarian — again. Out of everything that took place over the Memorial Day weekend, this might have been the biggest political news.

President Trump once again sided with an authoritarian leader over allies – and also took aim at a domestic rival in the exact same breath.

And even more significantly was the extent to which the political world, especially the conservative media, shrugged its shoulders.   Here’s what Trump tweeted on Saturday:  Afterward, reporters asked Trump why he isn’t concerned about North Korea’s missile tests.

TRUMP: Very importantly, there has been no nuclear testing for two years. I looked at a chart the other day. During the past administration, there were many numbers that were very high like 10, 12, 18, having to do with missile launches and nuclear testing. And or the last two years, it had zero and zero. I am very happy with the way it is going. And intelligent people agree with me.
QUESTION: You’re not bothered at all by the small missiles?
TRUMP: No I am not. I am personally not. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images One person who WAS BOTHERED by the missile tests the man standing next to Trump at the news conference, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

(Also, we’re old enough to remember when Trump said the Iran nuclear deal was flawed because it failed to address ballistic missiles.)

This isn’t the first time Trump has praised/affirmed/sided with an authoritarian figure in his first two-and-half years in office.   “I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today” [that Russia interfered in the 2016 election], Trump said in Helsinki last year.   “Viktor Orbán has done a tremendous job in so many different ways. Highly respected. Respected all over Europe. Probably, like me, a little bit controversial, but that’s okay,” Trump said in the White House earlier this month.   “We’ve had a great relationship,” Trump said of the Philippines’ Duterte in 2017.   And what continues to stand out from Trump’s remarks on North Korea/Biden is the lack of outrage, as well as the message it sends to other world leaders.

That message: Trash my domestic political opponents, and I’ll say nice things about you. “She’s got a plan for that.” But is that enough? NBC’s Ali Vitali takes a look at Elizabeth Warren’s policy-heavy campaign.

“The Massachusetts Democrat has churned out a consistent stream of policy proposals since getting in the president race, with more than a dozen in-depth plans ranging from leveraging public lands in the fight against climate change to student loan debt forgiveness.   While other candidates have worked to increase their name ID, Warren is pushing to make her name synonymous with having ‘a plan for that’ — the thing that could differentiate her from the Democratic field of more than 20 contenders.”

The question, however, is if Democratic voters want MORE than policy specifics from their presidential nominee.

Can policy beat Trump? Especially policy that might have little chance for passage in today’s divided Congress? 2020 Vision: Working hard? Or hardly working? Over the Memorial Day weekend, the Washington Post wrote about Joe Biden’s campaign activity – or lack thereof.

“[A]fter a short burst of activity in the early primary states, his schedule the past two weeks or so has mostly involved fundraisers, which — while publicly announced and attended by a pool reporter — are far different from open campaign event,” the Post said.

More: “Since entering the race four weeks ago, Biden has held 11 public events, according to his campaign. Former congressman Beto O’Rourke of Texas held nearly four times that number in the same period, according to schedules. And Gillibrand, who is lagging in the polls, planned 11 stops in Iowa just over the holiday weekend.”

And: “Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has shown her face to the public at 27 events in the four weeks since Biden entered the race. [Cory] Booker has had at least 27 events scheduled in the same time span, and Sanders has had at least 17 announced engagements.”

To be fair, whatever Biden’s been doing lately has been working – given his lead in the polls. And there’s nothing wrong with pacing yourself when it comes to a very long campaign.

But if he does end up losing in Iowa and New Hampshire in February, we’ll look back at this Post story.

Biden DOES have one event today – he attends a teachers’ union town hall in Houston at 5:30 pm ET. REUTERS/Mark Makela On the campaign trail today: In addition to Biden’s town hall in Houston, Steve Bullock campaigns in Iowa… Bernie Sanders stumps in New Hampshire… Cory Booker is in Nevada… Seth Moulton is in Massachusetts… And Kamala Harris participates in a town hall with MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell in South Carolina at 10:00 pm ET. DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 12 out of 12 That’s the ratio of economic models Moody Analytics’ Mark Zandi has looked at that forecast a re-election victory by President Trump based on current economic performance, per Steven Rattner in the New York Times.

“If the election were held today, Trump would win according to the models and pretty handily,” Zandi said a couple of months ago. “In three or four of them it would be pretty close. He’s got low gas prices, low unemployment and a lot of other political variables at his back. The only exception is his popularity, which matters a lot.” TWEET OF THE DAY: The Great Economic Disconnect? Freshmen Dems Who FLIPPED Republican Seats In 2018 NOT As Moderate As They Seem Sixteen freshmen Democrats appear to be key players in the impeachment fight within House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s own caucus. These Democrats flipped Republican seats in 2018 in Trump-won districts. Most of the wins were by small margins, so their precarious positions going into 2020 places Speaker Pelosi into a precarious position too as she navigates the impeachment question…

REAL CLEAR POLITICS

05/28/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Flawed Thinking; Iraqi Christians; Remembering the Fallen By Carl M. Cannon on May 28, 2019 09:52 am
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 28, 2019. I hope you had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend. I spent it watching baseball, although my thoughts kept returning to lost friends, including several whose lives were taken in Iraq or Afghanistan. Major League Baseball struck the right chord, I believe, which hasn’t always been the case in recent years. Instead of donning its players in camouflage uniforms, and assertively peddling camo-themed merchandise, MLB issued poppy patches to players containing a simple inscription: “Lest We Forget.”  I’ll have more on this topic in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * The (Political) Case for Impeachment Doesn’t Hold Up. Bill Scher asserts that the calculations of many Democrats and pundits are flawed. Pence’s Efforts to Help Iraqi Christians Faces New Threat. Susan Crabtree has the story. Climate Is Unpredictable, Weather You Like It or Not! The unseasonably cold spring in much of the country prompted this reflection from Frank Miele. “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall” on Obama’s Bad Cops and Spies. Charles Lipson sees wagons being circled by James Comey et al. as the DoJ’s inspector general wraps up his work and William Barr furthers his. Trump-Russia Is Turning — and the Knives Are Out. In RealClearInvestigations, Eric Felten reports that the president’s antagonists are pushing revisionist narratives that try to shift the blame for the debunked probe onto others. Kamala Harris’s Equal Pay Hoax. Jennifer C. Braceras argues that the California Democrat is twisting statistics to support her victimization message. Harvard’s Latest Enfeeblement of Liberal Education. Peter Berkowitz assesses the ouster of Ronald Sullivan as a faculty dean because his participation on Harvey Weinstein’s defense team made some students “feel unsafe.” What’s Fueling Our Robust Growth? In RealClearEnergy, Kathleen White contends that the driver of the U.S. economy is the shale oil and gas revolution.  Lessons From the Great Antioxidant Lie. RealClearScience editor Ross Pomeroy writes that it’s time to acknowledge failed assumptions about the supposed health game-changer. * * * Major League Baseball players, coaches and managers did more than merely wear a patch yesterday commemorating Memorial Day. In Yankee Stadium, the game was interrupted in the 7th inning as the crowd was introduced to 104-year-old World War II veteran Louis Forte. As the stadium scoreboard showed a picture of Forte as a young U.S. Army soldier heading off to combat in 1942, he waved to the crowd, which waved back and applauded. A Westchester County native, Forte told local reporters about going to old Yankee Stadium as a boy on a 25-cent bleacher ticket. He had a nicer seat on Monday. “I can’t think of anything better,” he said. “At this age, it’s wonderful.” At Fenway Park, visiting Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona reminded us of those who did not return from the battlefield. Francona, who managed the Red Sox to two World Series crowns, wore a patch on the front of his hoody with the name Michael Medders Jr., a U.S. Army captain from Avon Lake, Ohio, who was killed in combat a decade ago in Iraq. “He was a football player, sang in the choir,” an emotional Francona explained. “One of those all-around kids.” Francona’s gesture came on a day when the Red Sox faithful — and fans in numerous other American cities where he played — took time to remember Bill Buckner, who passed away on Memorial Day. Billy Buck, whom I’ve written about before, was not a military man. But he displayed uncommon fortitude on and off the baseball diamond and was not always appreciated for it. But this day belonged to the veterans, as Terry Francona reminded us by wearing that patch honoring Michael Medders. “His father was the police chief in Elyria,” he said. “I called him the other day. I said, ‘This is what I’m thinking about and I’d like your permission.’ He happened to say that the one thing his son was worried about is that somebody wouldn’t remember him. I was tearing up on the phone.” Your tears were our tears, skipper, and on this day we did not forget.  Carl M. Cannon
