Analysis Growing Up, She Thought She Was a Man. Now She’s Fighting the Patriarchy. “I had very masculine interests. I wasn’t super comfortable with my body. I was very, very uncomfortable with feminine clothing and makeup … [I] started to think OK, maybe I’m not actually a girl. Maybe I’m actually a boy,” recalls Eliana Bookbinder. Get ready for Washington’s annual prom weekend

DRIVING THE DAY

THE NEXT BATTLE … WAPO’S DAMIAN PALETTA and ERICA WERNER: “Trump administration pushes for quick action to raise debt limit”: “The requests have taken on new urgency because other budget discussions with Capitol Hill have broken down, leaving policymakers at a loss for ways to avoid a pileup of dangerous deadlines in September that could affect the stock market, labor market and economic growth.

“Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has played a major role in communicating the desire, and it’s shared broadly by many Republicans on Capitol Hill, according to the people briefed on the discussions, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private deliberations.” WaPo

TOP TALKER … THE ATLANTIC’S ELAINA PLOTT and PETER NICHOLAS on MICK MULVANEY: “Trump’s Chief of Staff Says He’s Having a Ball”: “Here’s the thing, Mick Mulvaney says, sitting in his West Wing office on Wednesday afternoon: He knows that Donald Trump’s administration doesn’t always make good on conservative ideals. He knows that they’re ‘spending a bunch of money on stuff we’re not supposed to,’ and that all the excess doesn’t comport well with his own reputation as a fiscal hawk and Tea Party darling during his congressional days, before he became acting White House chief of staff. …

“But the spending hasn’t escaped his notice—nor that of his old conservative colleagues in the House. One of them had actually ‘accused me of “losing,”’ Mulvaney recalled, after the White House signed a massive spending package. The colleague, Mark Meadows, ‘said, ‘It sounds like my friend Mick Mulvaney is not winning on some of the fiscal issues down at the White House.’’ But Mulvaney had a retort that underscores how he’s come to define success. ‘I told him, ‘Yeah, but at least I’m losing at the very highest levels.’’” The Atlantic

— NANCY COOK: “Popcorn and happy hours: How Trump’s top aide hopes to boost White House morale”: “It may be Washington’s most coveted happy hour invitation. On the patio outside the White House chief of staff’s office, cozily enclosed by greenery, West Wing aides relax with beer and wine under a white pergola, briefly escaping the rigors of working in Trump’s White House.

“The gatherings, about a half dozen so far, have become an increasingly regular feature of White House life this spring … They’re typically held on Friday evenings, or days when the president is out of town, with snacks brought up from the White House mess. One party was a sendoff for the former White House communications director, Bill Shine.

“The Trump White House has been likened to a snake pit, and has seen more staff turnover than any in memory. But Trump’s latest — and for now, acting — chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, is trying to change that.” POLITICO

Good Friday morning. Happy White House correspondents weekend. As always, we’re covering all the comings and goings of of what is still, for all the hand-wringing, the closest thing Washington’s chattering class has to an annual prom.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP TO HANNITY — “‘This was a coup,’ Trump told host Sean Hannity on Fox News’ ‘Hannity’ in his first interview since the Mueller report’s release. ‘This was an attempted overthrow of the United States government.’

“Trump insisted that special counsel Robert Mueller’s team investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election had gone ‘hog wild to find something about the administration which obviously wasn’t there.’

“Trump repeatedly said the 448-page Mueller report, a redacted version of which was released last week, proved no collusion and obstruction. He called the special counsel’s investigation a ‘one-sided witch-hunt’ by ‘angry Democrats’ who are ‘very serious Trump haters.’” POLITICO

DARREN SAMUELSOHN: “The fight to unveil Mueller’s final mysteries”

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar. Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi are offering more great tasting choices than ever before with less sugar or no sugar at all, smaller portion sizes, clear calorie labels and reminders to Think Balance.

THE REAL REASON TRUMP IS ATTACKING BIDEN … ELIANA JOHNSON and JOHN BRESNAHAN: “Trump’s Biden insults fueled by belief he can win”: “Hours after Joe Biden posted an online video announcing his 2020 White House bid, President Donald Trump responded on Twitter. ‘Welcome to the race Sleepy Joe,’ Trump taunted the former vice president on Thursday. ‘I only hope you have the intelligence, long in doubt, to wage a successful primary campaign.’

“Trump’s insults were actually masking respect — and genuine concern about Biden’s potential to win, Trump advisers say. As early as last fall, Trump was talking privately with aides about the threat Biden posed: ‘How are we gonna beat Biden?’ he would ask. When reassured that the moderate Biden would never defeat several of his more liberal rivals, Trump has pushed back: ‘But what if he does?’

“The conversations, relayed by a Republican strategist with direct knowledge of the interactions, reflect the president’s assessment that Biden poses the biggest threat to his re-election, uniquely capable of competing with him in the Rust Belt states of Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania that carried him to victory in 2016.” POLITICO

— JOHN HARRIS: “Joe Biden: Old man, still in a hurry”

NYT’S JONATHAN MARTIN in Wilmington and ALEX BURNS in New York: “5 Questions That Will Determine if Joe Biden Can Succeed”: “How will he handle the onslaught?: … Can he stay above the fray? … What’s an ‘Obama-Biden Democrat’? … Does he have ideas for the future? … Can he raise money, without being defined by it?” NYT

“Biden swears off lobbyists’ money, but K Street likes him anyway,” by Theo Meyer

— BIDEN IS ALWAYS going to be a Washington insider. It’s unclear why he is swearing off K Street cash when one of his biggest focuses is making sure he can compete on the money front. Sure, downtowners aren’t usually huge contributors to presidential candidates. But he had his first event after his announcement hosted by Comcast exec David Cohen, who runs the company’s Washington operation. Seems like needlessly splitting hairs.

— ANITA HILL SPOKE with the NYT about her recent phone call with Biden, which she didn’t view as a sincere attempt to apologize for his handling of her testimony during Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court hearings in 1991. Hill said the conversation left her feeling “deeply unsatisfied.”

“The focus on apology to me is one thing,” she said. “But he needs to give an apology to the other women and to the American public because we know now how deeply disappointed Americans around the country were about what they saw. And not just women. There are women and men now who have just really lost confidence in our government to respond to the problem of gender violence.” NYT

A WHITE HOUSE VISITOR … FROM ANITA KUMAR: Former Trump campaign adviser Michael Caputo hadn’t spoken to Trump since Inauguration Day when the president unexpectedly called Monday afternoon to say how sorry he was Caputo had been caught up in the Mueller investigation.

THE FIVE-MINUTE CALL ended with Trump inviting Caputo to visit him at the White House. Caputo and his wife, two youngest daughters and mother-in-law drove to Washington from Buffalo on Tuesday to meet with Trump. The family spent about 35 minutes in the Oval Office the next day with Trump, first lady Melania Trump, counselor Kellyanne Conway and Director of Social Media Dan Scavino.

THE TWO MEN, who have known each other since 1988, used to speak several times a week until Mueller and congressional investigators became interested in Caputo. He then began to receive death threats, lost jobs and was told by his attorney to not speak to the president.

“HE IS REACHING OUT to people he lost because of the Russia hoax,” Caputo said. “We all got pushed out. These are some of the people he misses having around.”

FOR YOUR RADAR — “Judges Rule Michigan Congressional Districts Are Unconstitutionally Gerrymandered,” by NYT’s Michael Wines: “A panel of three federal judges ruled on Thursday that 34 congressional and state legislative districts in Michigan are extreme partisan gerrymanders and unconstitutional. The judges ordered state lawmakers to redraw maps in time for elections in 2020.

“The panel wrote that it was joining ‘the growing chorus of federal courts’that have held that drawing districts to unfairly favor the party in power is unconstitutional. The judges said the maps violated Democratic voters’ constitutional rights.

“But the impact of the ruling ultimately will turn on an opinion by the Supreme Court, which is weighing decisions in two other partisan gerrymander cases involving congressional districts in North Carolina and Maryland. The justices’ decision in those cases, expected by the end of June, could reinforce the Michigan ruling, force alterations to it, or even overrule it entirely.” NYT

JOSH GERSTEIN: “Judge cites state secrets risk in dismissing warrantless wiretapping suit”: “A federal judge has dismissed a long-running lawsuit over President George W. Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program, ruling that allowing the case to go forward would create an unacceptable and exceptionally grave danger to the country.

“‘The Court cannot issue any determinative finding on the issue of whether or not Plaintiffs have standing without taking the risk that such a ruling may result in potentially devastating national security consequences,’ U.S. District Court Judge Jeffrey White wrote in his ruling on Thursday.” POLITICO

A message from the American Beverage Association:

Three competitors—Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi—are working together to reduce sugar consumed from beverages. That’s a big deal.

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK — Energy Secretary Rick Perry is traveling to Brussels next week to participate in the U.S.-EU Energy Council High-Level Business Forum. Belgium recently became the 35th country to receive U.S. liquefied natural gas.

TRUMP’S FRIDAY — The president will leave the White House at 9 a.m. en route to Indianapolis. He will arrive at Lucas Oil Stadium at 11:15 a.m. and deliver remarks at the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting. Trump will then return to Washington. At 4:15 p.m., the president will participate in the arrival of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The two will meet and then participate in a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office. At 7:15 p.m., Trump and Melania Trump will have dinner with Abe and his wife Akie Abe. Today is Melania’s birthday.

POLITICO MAGAZINE’S MEDIA ISSUE … TIM ALBERTA: “Inside the Shrinking Newsroom of the Paper That Shapes the Primaries”: “Since the dawn of the modern nominating process, no single event has done more to winnow the field of aspiring presidents than the Iowa caucuses—and no single publication has done more to capture its characters, narratives and rhythms than the Des Moines Register. But the scythe of technological change and economic pressure that is killing the news industry, and especially local journalism, is coming for Iowa’s paper of record, too. …

“‘When I land at DSM,’ says Jonathan Martin, national political reporter for the New York Times, ‘the first thing I do is pick up the Register.’”

— KNOWING DOUG MILLS — CHRIS CADELAGO: “Donald Trump’s Favorite Photographer Works for the New York Times”: “Mills has taken memorable photographs of presidents going back to Ronald Reagan. But he has found a new, perhaps surprising, admirer in Trump, who, for all of his cries of ‘fake news,’ has repeatedly singled out one photojournalist above all others for his omnipresence and talent.”

ATTN: @realDonaldTrump — NBC’s Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1): “Fox News judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano: ‘When the president asked Corey Lewandowski … to get Mueller fired, that’s obstruction of justice. When the president asked his then-White House counsel to get Mueller fired & then lie about it, that’s obstruction of justice.’”

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar.

WOW … WESLEY MORGAN: “Trump leaves Pentagon power vacuum”: “A quarter of the Pentagon’s most senior civilian posts remain filled by temporary personnel who are unconfirmed by the Senate – a high number that has slowed decisions, handicapped the department in policy disputes and shifted more power to the White House, according to recently departed Pentagon officials.

“Including acting Defense Secretary Pat Shanahan, who has served in a temporary capacity for an unprecedented 115 days, nine of the Pentagon’s 45 secretaries, deputy secretaries, undersecretaries, deputy undersecretaries, and assistant secretaries are serving in an acting capacity or fall into a related category of officials who are ‘performing the duties of’ the position, according to a POLITICO review.

“The problem is most acute in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where Shanahan is one of eight such unconfirmed officials out of 24, including his civilian number two. The department’s number three civilian job, the chief management officer, is also filled on an acting basis.”POLITICO

WHAT VLAD AND XI ARE READING — “Trump orders staff to prepare arms-control push with Russia and China,” by WaPo’s Paul Sonne and John Hudson: “The aim of the nascent effort, a senior administration official said, is to bring Russian nuclear weapons unregulated by treaties under new limits and persuade China to join an arms-control pact limiting or verifying its capabilities for the first time.

“The initiative is still in its earliest stages, with officials preparing options for how to implement Trump’s order. It is unclear whether it will yield results in an administration that has locked horns with Moscow and Beijing and has less than two years left in its first term.

“‘The president’s direction is that we need to look at more-ambitious arms control that will deal with more weapons, and more than just us and Russia,’ said the senior administration official … ‘What you’re going to see is more from the administration on how do we get to arms control that doesn’t just reflect a Cold War mentality.’” WaPo

THIS IS FINE — @nytimes: “The Antarctic’s second-largest colony of emperor penguins collapsed in 2016, with more than 10,000 chicks lost, and the population has not recovered, according to a new study.” NYT

VALLEY TALK … MOTHERBOARD’S JOSEPH COX and JASON KOEBLER: “At a Twitter all-hands meeting on March 22, an employee asked a blunt question: Twitter has largely eradicated Islamic State propaganda off its platform. Why can’t it do the same for white supremacist content?

“An executive responded by explaining that Twitter follows the law, and a technical employee who works on machine learning and artificial intelligence issues went up to the mic to add some context. …

“With every sort of content filter, there is a tradeoff, he explained. When a platform aggressively enforces against ISIS content, for instance, it can also flag innocent accounts as well, such as Arabic language broadcasters. Society, in general, accepts the benefit of banning ISIS for inconveniencing some others, he said.

“In separate discussions verified by Motherboard, that employee said Twitter hasn’t taken the same aggressive approach to white supremacist content because the collateral accounts that are impacted can, in some instances, be Republican politicians.” Motherboard

“Inside the Team at Facebook That Dealt with the Christchurch Shooting,” by Kate Klonick in The New Yorker

MEDIAWATCH — VANITY FAIR’S JOE POMPEO talks to journalists about whether Christopher Steele of dossier fame is a hero or a hoaxster: “A higher-stakes moment will arrive with the results of a Justice Department probe, conducted by Inspector General Michael Horowitz, into the F.B.I.’s reliance on the dossier in applying for a FISA warrant to eavesdrop on former Trump adviser Carter Page.

“‘That’s gonna be the ballgame on this: what does Michael Horowitz find?’ said [Mike] Isikoff, the chief investigative correspondent for Yahoo News. ‘If you read recent stories closely, there’s a lot of nervousness that he’s gonna come out with a critical report that reflects badly about the way the F.B.I. used the dossier. That is something a lot of us are going to be studying very closely.’” Vanity Fair

— NATE SILVER (@NateSilver538): “Biden’s gonna get bad press coverage because the mainstream media thinks he’s a boring story and the left-leaning media doesn’t think he’s woke enough. Not entirely unlike Clinton in 2016 although she had other factors that made it worse for her (including her gender).”

— Trump, to the children of reporters, on Take Your Kids to Work Day in the West Wing: “I actually like you much more than your parents.” USA Today

A message from the American Beverage Association:

America’s beverage companies—Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi—are working hard to support families as they reduce the sugar in their diets. That means offering more great tasting options with less sugar or no sugar at all, putting clear calorie labels on every product and working with public health organizations and other national and local partners to build stronger, healthier communities. With more choices, smaller portions and less sugar, America’s families can find the balance that’s right for them.

THE FLIP SIDE

View this email in your browser
Friday, April 26, 2019 Joe Biden 2020 On Thursday, “Former Vice President Joe Biden formally joined the crowded Democratic presidential contest.” RealClearPolitics From the Left The left is divided, with some arguing that Biden is the best chance to beat Trump, and others critical of his messaging strategy. Biden joins “a cast that includes six senators, five other past or present members of the House and five people who are or have been mayors or governors. Plus two folks who have never been elected to anything and are safe to ignore unless one of them saves a drowning puppy… No wonder Biden is leading in the polls. Potential campaign theme: ‘Vote for Joe — You Can Already Spell His Name.’”
Gail Collins, New York Times

“As Democrats assess the dizzying array of 20 candidates, the first question they should ask is whether a nominee could gain a strong majority in the general election and defeat Trump… [Biden] would be far from an ideal president, let alone a Democratic candidate. Maybe in one of those blessed miracles of American democracy that produced our greatest presidents, someone else will emerge who’s younger, smarter, more representative of a diverse electorate. But right now, Biden looks most like the person who could beat Trump. And that’s Job One.”
David Ignatius, Washington Post

“A lot of the attacks on Biden are, from an electoral angle, silly. Going after Biden for his lack of liberal wokeness, for example, seems destined to fail, given that the polling shows that Democrats want the party to move in a more moderate direction. Biden’s age is more likely to derail his candidacy. An NBC/Wall Street Journal poll taken in late February showed that only 33% of Democrats would feel enthusiastic or comfortable nominating someone older than 75… The fact that Biden is called ‘Sleepy Joe’ by Trump and is known to make gaffes may open the age question more than polling indicates right now.”
Harry Enten, CNN

Meanwhile, critics assert that “while most Democrats like Barack Obama personally, the party has lurched left since he left office, and many of its activists now take a dim view of policies that Democrats once deemed mainstream. Thus, if Biden had entered the presidential race with a standard biographical video describing his many accomplishments in public life… he would have immediately prompted a debate about all the positions he once took—on crime, financial deregulation, Anita Hill, and the Iraq War—that Democrats now scorn…

“Biden evades that problem in his announcement video, but at a cost. He bathes the past in a warm glow without defending it substantively. And in so doing, he offers a deeply unconvincing historical narrative in which Trump lands upon the American political scene from outer space.”
Peter Beinart, The Atlantic

“There’s plenty of reasonable debate over whether Democratic candidates should focus on Trump in mounting their arguments, or if they should focus on what they want to do for voters… I suspect this is a bit of a false choice, as what we need is a little bit of both. But if we’re going to talk about Donald Trump, I think we need to acknowledge that he wasn’t created in a vacuum. Our systemic racism and sexism, coupled with our economic insecurities, built a world in which Trump could come to power. Biden’s announcement seems premised on the idea that we need to revert to the world we had before Trump, rather than dramatically rethink the world that produced him.”
Dara Kass, Slate

Minority view: “Biden’s presidential announcement video… did something urgently needed in the 2020 race: put President Donald Trump’s history of hate front and center. By doing so, Biden acknowledged the pain — the real pain — that so many marginalized communities have felt since [2015]… We deeply feel the impact of Trump’s attacks. And we want to know that the 2020 Democratic candidates understand that and are willing to respond accordingly.”
Dean Obeidallah, CNN From the Right The right welcomes Biden as a moderate alternative to other Democratic candidates, but wonders if he is progressive enough for primary voters. “Former Vice President Joe Biden’s entrance into the 2020 presidential election will provide Democrats a choice: Do they want a reset, or do they want a revolution? As Democrats have spent the past several months outlining the sweeping changes they want to make to the United States, more than anything, Biden’s candidacy represents a promise to go back to a pre-Trump era in American politics…

“Biden has consistently led in polls. It’s of course possible his numbers will collapse as he undergoes more rigorous scrutiny and as his name recognition advantage erodes as voters get to know the other candidates better. Yet it’s also possible that a critical mass of the Democratic electorate is more moderate (both ideologically and temperamentally) than it would seem from the online conversation. In that case, Biden has a good chance of taking the nomination.”
Philip Klein, Washington Examiner

Is the Democratic Party still the party of Barack Obama?… A curious thing happens to Democrats after they leave the presidency. The shine seems to dull from their pennies quite quickly. While Republicans still revere Ronald Reagan decades after his administration, Bill Clinton is viewed by many on the left with scorn. This is not merely a result of his sexual peccadillos, but also a function of how fast the Democratic Party changes…

“By the standards of his time in office, it would be wrong to call Obama a moderate. He did, after all, run to the left of Hillary Clinton in 2008. But by today’s standards, it would be wrong not to call him a moderate… [The question is] does Obama still represent hope and change for the Democratic Party? Or like Bill Clinton, will his moderation be held against him? For Biden, that question will determine the success of his campaign; for the Democratic Party, that question will determine their very identity.”
David Marcus, The Federalist

“Obama was a history-making candidate, allowing voters to be aspirational about their country and themselves by voting for him. And Biden isn’t. Biden is the white guy who got in trouble for calling Obama ‘clean’ and ‘articulate.’… Biden’s candidacy is an attempt by Democrats to bargain with Trump’s America. Other candidates are promising to cleanse America from what Democrats see as the disgrace or even the sacrilege of Trump’s presidency. Democrats don’t want to bargain with the devil, they want an exorcist.”
Michael Brendan Dougherty, National Review

“There are structural elements facing Biden on the path to the nomination, too, particularly the delegates that can be won in caucuses instead of primaries, where activists have much greater power. It’s those caucuses that Obama used effectively to defeat Hillary Clinton in 2008. Biden will likely perform well in the big states, but he will need an effective caucus organization to have a chance of winning the nomination… With so many credible and not so credible candidates, we may… be headed for a Democratic convention with no winner on the first ballot.”
Mark Penn, Fox News

“It is pretty telling that a seventy-six year old, who’d be 78 if elected, is going to have to swoop in to save the Democrats from themselves and also that he may not be able to do it because he is too moderate for the base. Biden could give Donald Trump a real run for his money. They both understand and connect with blue collar workers who feel left behind. But, Donald Trump can play it right in that these workers fled Obama to Trump. Biden wants them to come back to the folks who left them behind.”

One More Time With Gusto It is the height of white, western arrogance to think one can be a Christian while rejecting settled, shared two-thousand year old orthodoxy that has tied together a bunch of Christians who agree on almost nothing except that Jesus Christ physically rose from the grave. If one can be a Christian while rejecting the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ, someone can also eat a steak tonight and rest well knowing he and his fellow vegetarians tend to live long lives so long as they do not fall off the edge of the earth. A Clarification and Extension on the Republican Ground Game Problems Some people took issue with it, including some long time friends. Others took it to mean I was criticizing the Republican National Committee ground game and door-to-door efforts. Perhaps I should have been more clear on that point. The issue is individual campaigns at the state and federal level. Prior to publication, I spoke with people in Texas, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Florida, all of whom were significantly involved in either state party or individual campaign operations. Strikingly, all of them had the same sorts of stories from the ease at which people could claim to have contacted more people than they did to the field operatives’ apps crashing and not updating. Green New Deal Advocate Says No Compromise! Twelve Years to Save the Planet! Need Expanded Indigenous People’s Rights. Bank of America Appears to be Misleading Its Customers About Supporting Planned Parenthood Bank of America gave Planned Parenthood $50,000.00 in 2017. But the company did so through the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. That foundation matches employee gifts to charitable organizations so Bank of America has some solid plausible deniability. The foundation has to direct payments to match employees. Employees gave so the foundation must give. That’s […] The post Bank of America Appears to be Misleading Its Customers About Supporting Planned Parenthood appeared first on The Resurgent.  Read in browser »

These Three Senators Just Endorsed Joe Biden Three senators have endorsed Joe Biden in the hours after his campaign kicked off. A Mayor Disgraced
Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh received an unwelcome wake-up call on Thursday when the FBI and the IRS stormed into both of her homes, her office, her attorney’s office, and even the home of one of her aids. Armed with warrants, the agents seized dozens of boxes of files related to her recent scandal involving children’s books she authored.

From the New York Times:

“On April 1, [Maryland] Governor [Larry] Hogan asked state prosecutors to investigate $500,000 that Ms. Pugh received from the University of Maryland Medical System, a nonprofit health care company that operates hospitals and other health care facilities in Baltimore and around the state.

The payment was for 100,000 copies of Ms. Pugh’s ‘Healthy Holly’ books, which promote healthy children’s eating and exercise. The books, which she began writing in 2011, were to be distributed to schools in the city.

At the time the arrangement with the organization began, Ms. Pugh was a state senator and sat on the organization’s board of directors. She resigned from the board after news of the payments became public in March, apologized for oversights she had made on financial disclosure forms, and returned $100,000.

Ms. Pugh also received more than $100,000 over three years starting in 2015 from Kaiser Permanente, the health care company, for 20,000 copies of the books, Kaiser Permanente said.

As embarrassing new details continued to emerge, including that the vast majority of the books never reached school children and could not be located, a growing number of elected officials called for her resignation.”

As of this morning, Mayor Pugh is on an indefinite leave of absence but her attorney has claimed her illness has prevented her from publicly commenting on the scandal or her future as an elected official.

No One Likes You, Kristen Gillibrand
As the Democratic field of 2020 candidates grew by one with the official announcement from Joe Biden yesterday, Senator Gillibrand’s early polling continues to be…unimpressive.

From Madeline Osburn at The Federalist:

“Gillibrand continues to sell herself as a Democrat who can win over Republican voters like she did in her House and Senate races. But she’s a white, blonde senator from New York, and that leaves a bad taste in the mouth of both Republicans and Democrats. A Vogue profile on Gillibrand in 2010 is literally titled, ‘In Hillary’s Footsteps.’

Besides, the media might love Ranch Lady more than they love Gillibrand.

They’re not doing her any favors on the campaign trail; that’s for sure. She doesn’t have the celebrity of Beto, or the gayness of Buttigieg—the things that journalists love to write about. What is the biggest national media moment Gillibrand’s campaign has had to date? Ranch Dressing Lady. No, nothing to do with Gillibrand herself, but a woman who interrupted Gillibrand’s stump speech in Iowa as she squeezed past the senator blurting out, ‘Sorry, I’m just trying to get some ranch.’”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Attempt to Mock GOP Backfires Heroically
From Fox News:

“One of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s, D-N.Y., tweets seemed to backfire on Thursday when she tried attacking Republicans over a picture of a politician stood next to a cardboard cutout of her.

‘GOP: Let’s pose our older male members next to cardboard cutouts of young female legislators,’ she tweeted. Her tweet included a post from the Republican Party of Kentucky. However, the politician pictured was Democratic Rep. John Yarmuth, Ky., not a Republican as she claimed.

Ocasio-Cortez later deleted the tweet but not before critics pointed out the gaffe on Twitter.

‘It literally says in the tweet that she is quoting that Yarmuth is a Democrat,’ writer Ryan Saavedra tweeted.”

Despite what she may think, the GOP couldn’t easily be blamed for targeting or cat-calling her in this situation.

THE CARTELS ARE MAKING BILLIONS OFF OF SMUGGLING
John Davidson. http://vlt.tc/3mbs “If you don’t think the ongoing border crisis is benefitting criminal smuggling networks and Mexican drug cartels, you’re not paying attention. A new report from the RAND Corporation found that smugglers and cartels earned as much as 2.3 billion dollars from Central American migrants in 2017.”

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Seventy-three percent (73%) of voters believe it is appropriate for the U.S. Census Bureau to ask residents if they are citizens of the United States. That question is currently before the Supreme Court and public attitudes are little changed since last November. Just 18% believe the citizenship question is inappropriate.Eighty-nine percent (89%) of Republicans believe the question is appropriate along with 68% of Independent voters and 64% of Democrats.Among other uses, Census data is used to calculate the number of Congressional Districts allocated to each state. Sixty-two percent (62%) of voters believe that only the number of legal residents should  be used to calculate the  number of Congressional Districts. Thirty percent (30%) believe all residents– including illegal immigrants–should be included. On health care, 82% believe every American should have a choice between buying their insurance from the government or a private company. Only 18% believe that private health insurance should be eliminated so that everyone would be required to use the government insurance program. Without private insurance companies in the mix, 48% believe that the cost of health care would go up. Just 29% believe they would go down.By a 42% to 21% margin, voters believe that requiring everyone to use the government program would also lead the quality of care to get worse rather than better. These numbers highlight the reality that apparent support for a single-payer national health insurance plan reflects support for an objective rather than a policy. While strongly opposing the idea of eliminating private insurance options, voters overwhelmingly favor providing financial assistance to people who cannot afford health insurance or medical care. Our daily generic ballot update shows Democrats with a five-point advantage. The president’s job approval is at 44%. In terms of Social Media Support, Joe Biden has dramatically increased his lead over the rest of the Democratic field. Finally, today’s Number of the Day is 10%. That’s the number of Americans who don’t go online. REAL CLEAR POLITICS

04/26/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Biden Uncut; Reelection Playbook; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on Apr 26, 2019 08:36 am
Good morning, it’s Friday, April 26, 2019, the day when I come up with an end-of-the week quote intended to provide inspiration for the weekend. Today’s line comes from jazzman, bandleader, and composer Duke Ellington, and is aimed at music lovers of all types. In 1965, Time magazine quoted Ellington on the evolution of his favorite art. “Jazz,” he said, “was like the kind of man you wouldn’t want your daughter to associate with.” I’ll have a brief word on that music, along with a more encompassing Duke Ellington quote in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Biden Uncut Could Rival Trump’s Reality Show. Susan Crabtree has this analysis of a potential matchup between the gaffe-prone former veep and the no-holds-barred president. President Trump’s Unorthodox Campaign Strategy Is Paying Off. Michael Glassner explains how Trump has turned the presidential reelection playbook on its head. Another Bretton Woods Gathering to Solve a Global Problem. In RealClearMarkets, Jeffrey Snider looks back on the economic summit 75 years ago as a model for addressing current crises. Five Facts: Raising the Age to Purchase Tobacco. In RealClearPolicy, No Labels has this overview of the Senate bill. A New Dawn for Economic Opportunity. Also in RCPolicy, Ben Carson touts the “opportunity zones” created under the 2017 tax cut law. * * * The quintessential sound that became an indelible part of the American identity bubbled up from the African American and Creole communities of New Orleans in the late 19th century. From there, it traveled up the Mississippi River and over to Chicago, rode the rails to the West Coast, flew overseas to Europe while sailing around the Caribbean. It resurfaced two decades later in Kansas City in a form that lent itself to big bands — and infused a host of new forms of music ranging from gospel to rhythm and blues to rock ‘n’ roll. The person or band who first applied the word “jazz” to this sound is not known, although a plausible candidate is Iowa-born Bert Kelly, who plied his trade before the First World War in Seattle and later at the Rose Room in San Francisco’s St. Francis Hotel. In 1914, Kelly relocated to Chicago where his new band featured a host of New Orleans players. Kelly himself said he picked up the word “jazz” on the West Coast. And on this date in 1919, the Literary Digest paid homage to him for it. “The phrase ‘jazz band’ was first used by Bert Kelly in Chicago in the fall of 1915 and was unknown in New Orleans,” the digest entry said. I don’t know about dissing the Crescent City in that way, but I do know that the great wordsmith Fred R. Shapiro unearthed a 1915 quote from the Chicago Tribune using the word “jazz” to describe the city’s blues club scene. So hats off to Bert Kelly. Ultimately, however, putting a name to a style of music isn’t where it’s at. Where it’s at is discovering what sound we like — and most of us aren’t limited to one genre — and carving out the time to play or listen or hum along to the tunes. Some of us find that we can’t live without it. “Music is my mistress,” Duke Ellington said, “and she plays second fiddle to no one.” And there’s your quote of the week.  Carl M. Cannon

MEET THE PRESS FIRST READ

Image

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

FIRST READ: If it’s Biden versus Bernie, buckle up

They’re both white men in their mid-to-late 70s. And they’re both current/former creatures of the U.S. Senate.

But Joe Biden versus Bernie Sanders – the two 2020 candidates who lead in almost every Democratic poll – represents one heck of an ideological contrast, if the race ultimately comes down to these two men.

So in addition to the not-so-subtle shot that the Sanders campaign took at Biden’s high-roller fundraiser last night, the two candidates disagree on:

  • health care (Sanders is for a single-payer system; Biden likely will work to protect/strengthen Obamacare);
  • trade (Sanders opposed the TPP trade agreement; Biden backed it as Barack Obama’s VP);
  • and their vision for 2020 (Sanders is once again calling for a political revolution; Biden is running on a political restoration project).

Of course, a full-out Biden-versus-Bernie ideological fight – if it comes to that – could create an opening for the other 2020 Dems, whose messages are in between a revolution and a restoration.

And last night, Elizabeth Warren took a swipe at Biden’s entry when she was asked about his record on Wall Street and bankruptcy, per MSNBC’s Shirley Zilberstein.

“At a time when the biggest financial institutions in this country were trying to put the squeeze on millions of hard-working families who were in bankruptcy because of medical problems, job losses, divorce and death in the family, there was nobody to stand up for them,” she said.

“I got in that fight because they just didn’t have anyone. And Joe Biden was on the side of the credit card companies.”

Ouch.

But also remember that both Biden and Sanders mutually benefit from contrasts with one another.

Biden needs the foil of Sanders to show that his version of democratic socialism goes too far, while Sanders needs the foil of Biden to demonstrate that Obamaism-Bidenism doesn’t go far enough.

So don’t be surprised if this Biden-versus-Bernie debate becomes a staple of the fall before next year’s first contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Trump addresses a struggling NRA

When President Trump addresses the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting in Indianapolis at 11:35 am ET, he’ll speak to an organization that’s been incredibly weakened over the past year.

“[T]he group is grappling with infighting, bleeding money and facing a series of investigations into its operating practices, including allegations that covert Russian agents seeking to influence the 2016 election courted its officials and funneled money through the group,” the AP writes.

More: “Indeed, as Trump is speaking Friday, Maria Butina, the admitted Russian agent, is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court in Washington.”

Besides its financial and Russian troubles, the NRA also got drubbed in last year’s midterms – a reminder that the NRA’s political fate is tied directly to the Republican Party.

It wasn’t that way 20 years ago…

2020 VISION: Who endorsed Biden and who didn’t

On his first day as a presidential candidate, Biden picked up some key (but not surprising) endorsements:

  • Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del.
  • Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa.
  • Sen. Doug Jones, D-Ala.
  • Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del.
  • Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa.
  • Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Pa.
  • Rep. Tom Suozzi, D-N.Y.

But here’s an endorsement Biden didn’t get – Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., who backed Pete Buttigieg earlier this week.

Why is Beyer notable here?

“Beyer endorsed Obama in early 2007 and volunteered on his campaign, knocking on doors for weeks in Iowa ahead of the state caucuses,” the Washington Post writes. the Washington Post writes.

Also: “Beyer served two terms as Virginia’s lieutenant governor in the 1990s, was a major fundraiser for Obama and served as U.S. ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein from 2009 to 2013.”

On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden appears on The View… Elizabeth Warren stumps in Iowa… Kirsten Gillibrand hits New Hampshire… Cory Booker campaigns in South Carolina… And Beto O’Rourke and Julian Castro both swing through Nevada.

On the campaign trail Saturday: President Trump holds a rally in Green Bay, Wis… O’Rourke, Castro, Warren, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar and John Hickenlooper attend an SEIU forum in Las Vegas… O’Rourke later heads to California… And Gillibrand remains in New Hampshire, while Booker stays in South Carolina.

On the campaign trail Sunday: O’Rourke holds a town hall in San Francisco.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 28 years

28 years.

That’s the time that passed between the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings — for which Joe Biden served as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee — and Biden’s reported repentant phone call a few weeks ago to Anita Hill, who accused Thomas of sexual harassment.

But, as the New York Times reports, the call didn’t go as he hoped.

Hill told the Times: “I cannot be satisfied by simply saying, ‘I’m sorry for what happened to you’ … I will be satisfied when I know there is real change and real accountability and real purpose.”

She also didn’t call Biden’s phone call an apology, and — although she doesn’t see Biden’s conduct during the hearings as totally disqualifying — she said she can’t support him until he further addresses his treatment of her and of corroborating witnesses who were never called to testify in the confirmation fight.

THE LID: Oh, that Joe

Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we looked at the various ways Joe Biden’s candidacy could play out.

Tweet of the day: Three cheers for 25 years!

ICYMI: This week’s overlooked stories

Biden gets in! The subpoena war! More fallout from the Mueller report! Those were the stories that dominated the week.

But don’t miss these other ones, per NBC’s Kyle Stewart, which would have received more attention in any other political era.

2.      Watchdogs open 2nd ethics probe of top Interior officials
