MORNING BEACON
MORNING SIGNAL
Apr 05, 2019 Happy Friday from Washington, where a top House Democrat has done a 180 on the boundaries of investigating presidents. Fred Lucas reports. Psychologist and author Jordan Peterson says young Americans who embrace socialism are ignorant of the history of the radical left. Jarrett Stepman covers the speech. In Ukraine, Nolan Peterson talks with aging soldiers who recall the deprivations of communism. Plus: Jim Carafano on what to do about our broken immigration system, Walt Heyer on the deceptiveness of transgender activists, and Daniel Davis on the power of the pro-life movie “Unplanned.” Have a great weekend. News Jordan Peterson Unpacks What Drives the Left and How to Restore Meaning To address the growth of nihilism, it’s important to build the self-worth of individuals so that they can find strength from within, says Jordan Peterson. Unfortunately, for 50 years, we’ve been teaching people that they’re fine just the way they are, a terrible message for those who are “miserable and aimless.” More Commentary Kids Aren’t Born Transgender, So Don’t Let Advocates Bamboozle You People who pursue a cross-sex identity aren’t born that way, and children should not be encouraged to “transition” to the opposite sex, according to a reference work endorsed by the American Psychological Association. More News Then and Now: Rep. Jerry Nadler’s Change of View on Investigating a President In 1998, Nadler strongly opposed Congress’ making the Starr report on Bill Clinton public. Now he is insisting that all of the Mueller report become public. More Special Feature ‘Harder to Live Under USSR Than to Be in War’: Old Ukrainian Soldiers Remember Communism “In the USSR I was always under pressure, and I was always in hiding. In war I can see my enemy and I can fight back. In war, at least I know who my enemy is.” More Analysis They Had Their Twins at 26 Weeks. Now They’re Advocating Protecting Babies Born After Abortion Attempt. “Does somebody have a 3-year-old, … think, ‘Gee, I just don’t want a baby, just put it in the dumpster.’ It’s about that crude. It’s just as crazy as what they’re doing with this born-alive baby,” says Linda Balek. More Commentary 4 Options Trump Has to Address Border Crisis White House officials have hinted that they are getting ready to unleash a raft of measures to go after illegal immigrants. More Commentary ‘Unplanned’ Threatens America’s Innocence on Abortion. But It Also Offers Hope. This unveiling of truth makes “Unplanned” a severe threat to American innocence on abortion, which might explain why so many powerful liberals seem to have thrown obstacles in the movie’s path. Friday, April 5, 2019 Wisconsin and Chicago Elections “[Conservative] Brian Hagedorn declared victory Wednesday over fellow Appeals Judge Lisa Neubauer in a close race for Wisconsin Supreme Court even as both sides were preparing for a potential recount… Hagedorn led Neubauer 50.25% to 49.75% with nearly all of Tuesday’s votes unofficially counted.” Milwaukee Journal Sentinel “Former federal prosecutor Lori Lightfoot easily won the Chicago mayor’s race Tuesday, earning support from every part of the city to defeat a longtime political insider and become the first black woman and openly gay person to lead the nation’s third-largest city.” AP News From the Left The left is lamenting the loss in Wisconsin and celebrating the progressive wins in Chicago. “Wisconsin voters on Tuesday delivered a stinging defeat to Democrats hoping to hold a seat on the state Supreme Court — and a hint that a sleeping Republican base is beginning to wake up just in time for the 2020 presidential election… The results underscore what should be obvious by now: Wisconsin is a closely divided state at the tipping point of either party’s path to 270 electoral votes.” Reid Wilson, The Hill “In a rare stroke of luck, Wisconsin conservatives managed to rally behind a reactionary judge so extreme, two of the GOP’s most reliable donors — the state’s Chamber of Commerce and Realtors Association — could not bring themselves to support him… While we were all debating a presidential primary that’s still ten months away, many progressives slept through an immensely consequential — and, by most accounts, easily winnable — election against a reactionary bigot in Wisconsin (again).” Eric Levitz, New York Magazine “In a result eerily reminiscent of the 2016 presidential election in the state, liberals’ heavy focus on social and culture war issues they believed would be disqualifying over pocketbook issues appeared to backfire, as a surge in the vote from more culturally conservative areas around greater Green Bay, exurban Milwaukee and Wisconsin’s Northwoods more than made up for big turnout in Madison, while Milwaukee’s turnout once again lagged behind the state.” Cameron Joseph, Talking Points Memo Meanwhile in Chicago, an open letter to the incoming mayor: “You were the candidate of Chicagoans who can’t find a good school for their kids. Who wonder why they’re paying more in property taxes while wealthy developers get tax breaks. Who can’t find a mental health clinic in a family emergency. Who don’t dare let their children play outside… “Like no mayor before you, you are in a position to demand that big developers do more for the neighborhoods, that the wealthiest residents and corporations pay a fairer portion of taxes, that neighborhood schools come before charter schools, and that affordable housing be extended to every ward… You made history, Lori Lightfoot. Now make more.” Editorial Board, Chicago Sun-Times Many note that “the United States is experiencing a socialist surge right now. That surge came to Chicago [Tuesday] night, where democratic socialists won big… You’ve got at least five, maybe six democratic socialists who will be on the 50-member Chicago city council… Throughout the country, people are tired of low wages, soaring housing costs, privatization of public goods, budget cuts and corporate giveaways of public money. They have tried austerity and found it miserable. If Chicago’s elections are any indication, maybe they’re ready to try socialism.” Micah Uetricht, The Guardian From the Right The right is excited about the victory in Wisconsin and cautiously optimistic about Lightfoot. “Republicans received an unexpected piece of good news on Tuesday night… Trump knows that he needs to win only the electoral college to get reelected, and that encourages him to double down on issues that motivates Republicans and blue-collar former Democrats. That coalition makes up about half the vote in Wisconsin, without Trump on the ballot and without a nationally known progressive as his opponent. Tuesday’s result should warm Republican hearts with the hope that maybe the president, despite everything, is becoming a slight favorite for reelection.” Henry Olsen, Washington Post “Republicans have reinforced their court majority with Mr. Hagedorn, a mainstream conservative jurist who served as counsel to Mr. Walker. The left vilified him for giving speeches to the ‘hate group’ Alliance Defending Freedom, which represented Colorado’s cake-baker in a winning appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court… The left’s smear campaign prompted some business groups to pull back advertising but may have also energized Republicans… Republicans were able to beat back [a] liberal surge by winning the suburbs where liberals in recent elections had been gaining. Perhaps the emerging radicalism on the left is causing voters to think twice about returning them to power.” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal “Liberals overplayed their hand attacking religious and social conservatives. Neubauer and her liberal allies vilified Hagedorn as an anti-LGBT bigot because he had founded a Christian school that upholds Christian beliefs regarding sex and marriage, and because he had echoed comments from Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent in Lawrence v. Texas.” John McCormack, National Review “The attacks on Hagedorn’s faith crossed a red line. At issue was a single, vital question: ‘Can a Bible-believing Christian still hold office in the state of Wisconsin?’… Even casual believers and secular Americans can recognize there is a world of difference between the kind of hate groups that the SPLC was originally formed to combat and organizations that simply uphold traditional Christian morality and defend religious freedom.” David French, National Review Regarding Lightfoot’s victory in Chicago, “at the forefront of the mayoral runoff was the Jussie Smollett case. While no one expressed as much rage toward the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and the alleged hate crime hoaxer as Emanuel, Lightfoot expressed real criticism of Kim Foxx’s move to drop the charges… The election may not be a referendum on the Smollett case specifically, but it’s at least one of the Chicago machine as a whole. For all that progressives in the city like to brand themselves as, choosing Lightfoot over a union-backed career crony is actual change and progress.” Tiana Lowe, Washington Examiner On the bright side… This thorough evaluation of some Gummi Bears truly deserves a Nobel prize. Y’all All Know If It Were Conservatives, the Media Would Be Pouncing On This
If
a conservative writer were married to someone who worked in a
nonpartisan position within, say, a White House office or a Supreme
Court office or even the Architect of the Capitol’s office and the
conservative writer were taking deeply critical, partisan shots at the
President, Architect of the Capitol, or a Supreme Court Justice, the
media would have a field day.
Let’s
not forget the media went wall to wall driving a girl from her job on
Capitol Hill for daring to go onto her personal Facebook page and
criticize Barack Obama’s daughters at a public event. Do you really
think the media would not attack if a conservative blogger or journalist
were taking regular shots at Supreme Court

DRIVING THE DAY
“HILL TO DIE ON” EXCERPT … POLITICO MAGAZINE: “How Trump Conspired with the Freedom Caucus to Shut Down the Government”: “[T]he shutdown had revealed another great paradox of Donald John Trump: He often bragged about how big of a Republican he was, but he always seemed taken by the other party and its leaders. He cut deals with them, often projecting that he was willing to abandon the set of principles that got him elected in pursuit of bipartisan achievements, before being yanked back by his party. Deep inside, Trump seemed to know Democrats had something that Republicans, and, more acutely, he, was always struggling to find: unity.
“‘They’re lousy politicians, they’re lousy on policy, they got the worst ideas in the world, but they stick together,’ Trump said of the Democrats in [an interview in] late November, just weeks before the shutdown. ‘And the Republicans do not stick together as well, OK? There’s no question about it. And I respect them for that, and I tell the Republicans that. I say, ‘These people stick together. Even if it’s bad, they stick together.’” POLITICO Magazine … Pre-order the book
— NEW: ANNA and JAKE will be on NBC’S “MEET THE PRESS” on Sunday to talk about the book for the first time.
Good Friday morning. NEW … CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY GENERAL XAVIER BECERRA is filing a motion for preliminary injunction to stop PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP from diverting federal dollars for the border wall. Twenty states are joining him.
FROM 30,000 FEET … WHERE THINGS STAND FOR THE PRESIDENT: ANITA KUMAR and ANDREW RESTUCCIA: “Barrage of setbacks spoils Trump’s post-Mueller reset”: “It was just last week that President Donald Trump and his allies euphorically celebrated what they called Trump’s exoneration after special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe. The apparent absence of proof that Trump’s 2016 campaign conspired with the Kremlin produced talk of a fresh start for Trump’s presidency ahead of the 2020 election.
“But misfortune and mayhem almost immediately began piling up. Trump unleashed two new political crises — one on health care, one on the Mexican border — and then retreated on both of them. A brief lull in House Democratic oversight action ended abruptly when House investigators demanded his tax returns.
“And news reports revealed that Mueller’s soon-to-be-released findings may be far more damaging than Attorney General William Barr has publicly indicated, suggesting that the Russia scandal is hardly in the president’s rear view window.” POLITICO
— WAPO’S ASHLEY PARKER, ELLEN NAKASHIMA, DEVLIN BARRETT and CAROL LEONNIG: “Potentially damaging information in Mueller report ushers in new political fight”
TRUMP WEIGHS IN ON BIDEN — NYT’S ANNIE KARNI and SYDNEY EMBER: “Trump Ignores Own History in Taking a Jab at Biden”: “President Trump, ignoring his own troubled history with women and bragging about sexual misconduct, went after Joseph R. Biden Jr. via Twitter on Thursday, posting a video that mocked the former vice president for his handsy approach to politicking.
“The 15-second clip tweeted Thursday by Mr. Trump —
accompanied by the text, ‘WELCOME BACK JOE!’ — doctored a homemade
video that Mr. Biden had released the day before, in which the former
vice president addressed his history of physical contact with women,
some of whom have come forward in recent weeks to say his intimate
behavior made them uncomfortable.
“As Mr. Biden speaks to the camera,
a pair of hands appears on his shoulders, and then a cartoonish image
of Mr. Biden’s head pops up from behind a couch and intimately nuzzles
the back of the former vice president’s head. For a week, Mr. Trump’s
advisers have been watching the spectacle surrounding the accusations
that Mr. Biden has touched women inappropriately with something like
glee.” NYT … Trump’s video
— @JoeBiden replies to Trump’s tweet: “I see that you are on the job and presidential, as always.”
MORE … TOP-ED — SOFIE KARASEK in WaPo, “A photo of me and Joe Biden went viral. I want him to take ownership for his actions”: “Biden introduced the performance and asked to meet us afterward. I felt the urgency of this crisis coursing through my body — that the failure to support survivors could lead to more deaths … In response, he leaned down, took my hands and put his forehead to mine. I was taken aback. I averted my eyes, hoping my body language could shorten the interaction.
“I didn’t think he was going to kiss me, but it felt like if I met his eyes, it wasn’t out of the question, either. It was unwelcome, uncomfortable and strange. At the same time, I was glad to convey this serious message to him, glad it seemed to resonate with him. Soon the photo of our foreheads together went viral.” WaPo
PELOSI SPEAKS — “‘I’m agnostic’: Pelosi questions whether Medicare-for-all can deliver benefits of Obamacare,” by
WaPo’s Paul Kane and Rachael Bade: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
questioned whether a health-care proposal embraced by several Democratic
presidential candidates would be too expensive and fail to provide the
same coverage as the Affordable Care Act. Instead, Pelosi (D-Calif.)
suggested Thursday that she would rather build on the 2010 law and is
yet to be convinced the Medicare-for-all proposal pushed by many
liberals would achieve its purported goals.
“‘I’m agnostic. Show me how you think
you can get there,” Pelosi said in an interview with The Washington
Post. ‘We all share the value of health care for all Americans —
quality, affordable health care for all Americans. What is the path to
that? I think it’s the Affordable Care Act, and if that leads to
Medicare-for-all, that may be the path.’ She also suggested that
Medicare-for-all had become more of a buzzword among political activists
in the run-up to the 2020 campaign, a loosely defined concept that few
people understood in concrete terms.” WaPo
— CIVIL WAR! … @justicedems: “We just launched DCCCBlacklist.com because it’s time to stand up to the DCCC’s bullying of the progressive movement. The movement is building a network of alternative infrastructure to help progressive primary candidates like @AOC and @AyannaPressley win their next race.”

SCOTT GOTTLIEB’S NEXT STEP — NYT’S SHEILA KAPLAN: “Scott Gottlieb Says He Will Return to Conservative Think Tank After Leaving F.D.A.”: “Gottlieb plans to work on drug prices and other health policy issues as a part-time fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, after he leaves his post as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. His last day at the F.D.A. is Friday. In an interview, Dr. Gottlieb said he was not yet sure what other work he would pursue beyond the half-dozen or so days he’d spend each month at the conservative think tank.” NYT
NEW NBC/WSJ POLL — “Americans give social media a clear thumbs-down,” by NBC’s Mark Murray: “The American public holds negative views of social-media giants like Facebook and Twitter, with sizable majorities saying these sites do more to divide the country than unite it, and spread falsehoods rather than news, according to results from the latest national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
“What’s more, six-in-10 Americans say they don’t trust Facebook at all to protect their personal information, the poll finds. But the public also believes that technology – in general – has more benefits than drawbacks on the economy, and respondents are split about whether the federal government should break up the largest tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook.” NBC
OVAL OFFICE INTERVIEW … THE WASHINGTON TIMES’ CHARLIE HURT: “Trump, on Barbara Bush: ‘She was nasty to me, but she should be’”: “President Trump said he was not surprised by former first lady Barbara Bush’s attacks on him, as posthumously quoted in a new biography. ‘I have heard that she was nasty to me, but she should be. Look what I did to her sons,’ he told The Washington Times in an exclusive Oval Office interview.” WT

— FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: REP. LEE ZELDIN (R-N.Y.) handily beat Democrat Perry Gershon in 2018, but Gershon is running again, and has cut a new ad to introduce himself to voters. The spot was made by some of the same people who helped launch Randy Bryce into political fame — Bill Myers and Matt McLaughlin of Win. They are spending $20,000 on this digital intro video, which cost them $30,000 to make. The 2:22 spot
2020 WATCH — JAMES ARKIN: “Stacey Abrams torn between running for president, Senate”: “Abrams is doing everything a would-be presidential candidate would do: a nationwide book tour, candidate cattle calls and stops on late-night television and morning news shows. But she’s also still actively considering running for Senate in Georgia, and top Democrats continue to court her aggressively for the race. Abrams met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer Thursday in Washington, at least her third meeting with the Democratic leader this year.
“Abrams told POLITICO in an interview Thursday evening that Schumer has been ‘diligent’ and ‘thoughtful’ in wooing her to run for Senate, including enlisting allies to help her understand the contours of the job. Abrams said she spent years preparing to run for governor in 2018, a race she narrowly lost, and wanted to give the same forethought to a Senate bid.” POLITICO
— BURGESS EVERETT: “Manchin weighs bid for West Virginia governor in 2020”: “Just five months off the race of his life, Joe Manchin is mulling a run for governor in 2020 against GOP Gov. Jim Justice. The Democratic senator said in an interview Thursday that he’s once again ‘thinking about’ running for the ‘best job in the world’: governor of West Virginia.
“‘I think about it every minute of every day. Now, thinking about it and doing it are two different things,’ Manchin said. ‘I’ll make a decision this fall sometime. I don’t think there’s any hurry at all.’” POLITICO
AS IF THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL WEREN’T CROWDED ENOUGH … “Why not me? After Beto, House Dems pile into 2020 contest,” by Sarah Ferris, Laura Barrón-López, and John Bresnahan: “Democratic Reps. Tim Ryan, Eric Swalwell, Tulsi Gabbard and Seth Moulton aren’t likely to be elected president in 2020. But faced with a stagnant leadership structure in the House and a political environment defined more by internet fame than legislative achievement, these Democratic lawmakers are weighing longshot bids for the White House or have already jumped into the race.” POLITICO
— “Beto’s driving himself around Iowa. Again,” by David Siders in Carroll, Iowa
— TIM RYAN to CNN’S CHRIS CUOMO: “It’s been divided for a long time and because we’re so divided we haven’t been able to solve any of the big problems. In the area I come from in northeast Ohio, these problems have been going on since the 1970s. … We failed to put in an industrial policy together in the United States that stops the bleeding. And I’m going do that, and I’m going to focus on that.”

THE INVESTIGATIONS — “‘Dozens’ of Whistle-Blowers Are Secretly Cooperating With House Democrats,” by The Atlantic’s Russell Berman: “Democrats on Capitol Hill say that beyond [Tricia] Newbold, a small army of whistle-blowers from across the government has been working in secret with the House Oversight Committee to report alleged malfeasance inside the Trump administration. Lawmakers and aides are reluctant to discuss information they have gleaned from anonymous government tipsters in detail.
“But the list of whistle-blowers who either currently or previously worked in the Trump administration, or who worked closely with the administration, numbers in the ‘dozens,’ according to a senior aide from the committee now led by Democratic Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland.” The Atlantic

The files include voice mail messages and recordings, as well as 14 million other documents, they said.” NYT
DARREN SAMUELSOHN, “Barr’s legacy on the line as Mueller team fumes”: “Some members of Congress are even asking whether Barr himself has broken the law, saying his characterization of the Mueller probe allowed Trump and his allies to build a public narrative clearing the president of any wrongdoing — all without actually releasing a full version of the special counsel’s findings.
“‘If it turns out that he has obstructed justice by how he has handled the Mueller report that will be a deep stain on his legacy,’ said Rep. “‘I doubt that will be a nomination. But if it were a nomination, you can bet [what] the interest rates he would be pushing for.’ ‘If Herman Cain were on the Fed, you’d know the interest rate would soon be 9-9-9,’ Romney said.” POLITICO
WONDER WHY! — “Trump Asked That Confirmation of I.R.S. Counsel Be a Priority,” by NYT’s Maggie Haberman and Nick Fandos:“President
Trump earlier this year asked Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority
leader, to prioritize a confirmation vote for his nominee to be the
chief counsel of the Internal Revenue Service, indicating that it was a
higher priority than voting on the nomination of William P. Barr as
attorney general, a person familiar with the conversation said.
“White House aides insisted for months
that the confirmation of the nominee, Michael J. Desmond, a tax lawyer
from Santa Barbara, Calif., was a top priority after passage of the tax
bill in 2017. But the request by Mr. Trump, made to Mr. McConnell on

“‘As federal employees, we serve the public, and our loyalties must prioritize that purpose above all others. “Remain in Mexico” policy for migrants creating ambiguity, fear
Nearly
four months ago, the Trump administration launched its “Remain in

leaving them confused on how best to help their clients, and leaving
their clients fearful about their safety in Mexico. Read More…

The Violence Against Women’s Reauthorization Act is a Trojan Horse for Leftwing Agenda Its title sounds like the type of bill any reasonable congressperson would vote for, but beneath the bleeding-heart exterior lurks policy pushes lefty lawmakers have stuffed in along the way. Most egregiously, the bill contains new gun restrictions that would apply to first time misdemeanor convicts. To read most mainstream media coverage of the bill, one would think that the National Rifle Association was actually advocating for violence against women – nothing could be further from the truth. The bill passed resoundingly in the House on Wednesday afternoon with 33 Republicans breaking the party line and voting in favor of it. The bill has a less certain future in the GOP-controlled upper chamber. A fuller breakdown of the bill from the L.A. Times: “House and Senate Republicans have concerns about a change that prohibits someone from owning or purchasing a gun if they are convicted of stalking or if they are subject to a restraining order filed by a person they are dating or have dated. There is currently a ban on gun possession or purchase when a restraining order is filed by a spouse, child or cohabitating partner. Stalking is a misdemeanor, and the National Rifle Assn. has said that prohibiting someone from purchasing a gun because of a misdemeanor conviction is too extreme. The gun-rights organization said it will be watching closely to see how lawmakers vote on the bill.” There is additional controversy in the bill regarding recognizing born-male individuals who identify as female being allowed into women’s abuse shelters. From Congresswoman Debbie Lesko at The Daily Signal: “I am voting no on the Democrats’ version of the Violence Against Women Act because it is a radical bill that I believe will actually hurt women more. This bill, under the weight of federal law, would force domestic violence shelters to take in biological males who identify as women. This could be in showers. This could be in beds. Can you think of this? We have women that are placed in shelters that have already been abused, some of them sexually abused, but now the federal government is going to require these sheltersto take in biological males and sometimes place them right next to these women?” ‘Unplanned’ Surpassing Box-Office Expectations… and Changing Hearts Along the Way From Julie Gunlock at The National Review: “On the movie’s opening weekend, Twitter even suspended the movie’s Twitter account and then gave some completely convoluted reason for the move. But we know why. Despite this media blackout, Unplanned made a strong debut on its opening weekend (meanwhile, Disney’s star-studded movie Dumbo, which opened the same weekend, flopped). Unplanned is a major inconvenience to those who want to keep information about the abortion industry quiet. Planned Parenthood knows it must keep people in the dark if it is going to survive. But this strategy won’t work in the information age. This small-budget, independent movie is a modern-day Silent Scream, and, like my repairman, the world is about to wake up from its daze.” Perhaps a sign of the times – here’s an actually pro-life opinion from Karen Swallow Prior at Vox: “The eradication of abortion may be difficult to imagine. But consider how difficult it would have been for our grandparents to foresee a culture in which nearly one in four women has an abortion by age 45. Certainly, some factors leading to this situation reflect real and substantial progress for women: greater equality, more work options, improved understanding of sexuality, and increased moral agency. But rights for women that come at the expense of unborn children aren’t true liberation; they merely, as one writer put it, enable the “redistribution of oppression.” Friday Entertainment Center The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) is currently in a stand-off with the Association of Talent Agents (ATA). This is terrible timing because most crews gearing up for the fall season have begun to assemble their writing teams. For years, writers have been at odds with the ATA pushing back against things like agency “packaging” and generally getting involved when they shouldn’t. No matter what happens, this will have a dramatic effect on the future of scripted television – hopefully for the better. This reviewer describes “Shazam!” as a superhero movie version of “Big” – which is just exactly what I had hoped it would be. Details of the “Downton Abbey” movie have been released. I’m in as long as they dress up and have grand dinners It seems more likely than not that Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin will see some jail time. Francis Ford Coppola is getting ready to dust off his clapboard for “Megalopolis” Here’s a great resource to track which of your favorite TV shows will be coming back…and which won’t. The third season of “Santa Clarita Diet” is now streaming on Netflix and is the best one yet. BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist. |

Good morning,A
month ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was riding high, viewed favorably
by 42% of voters nationwide and unfavorably by 43%. That net rating of
-1 was far better than any other Congressional leader and also a vast
improvement from Pelosi’s own -17 in November. Now, however, the Speaker’s numbers have returned to earth. The latest ScottRasmussen.com national survey shows Pelosi is viewed favorably by 36% of all voters and unfavorably by 49%. The decline to a net rating of -13 was driven by reduced support among Democrats. Most
likely, it’s a reflection of the growing tensions between progressive activists and establishment Democrats.Forty-four percent (44%) of voters now believe that Congress is too liberal while 36% believe it is too conservative. That’s a complete reversal from last fall when 44% believed Congress was too conservative and 36% said too liberal. Just
26% now believe it is even somewhat likely that Congress will
successfully address the major issues facing the nation before the 2020
elections. That’s down from 32% in each of the past couple of months. The new survey also shows that just 17% believe most Members of
Congress care what their constituents think. Twenty-three percent (23%)
believe their own representative cares “about what people like you
think.”Fifty-six percent (56%) believe their own representative in Congress probably trades votes for campaign contributions. Fifty-three percent (53%) believe their own representative likely trades votes for bribes.Given
a list of 14 items that people might use to define themselves, 47% of
voters selected their children as one of the top three choices.
Twenty-three percent (23%) ranked their
children as the number one factor in their self-identification.A
ScottRasmussen.com com survey found that 40% selected being an American
as one of the top three items. Thirty-nine percent (39%) said the
family they grew up with, and 37% faith or religion.Nothing
else came close and just 7% selected their political affiliation. Only
1% named politics as the top attribute of their self-identification.Finally, today’s Number of the Day
notes that the median asking price of a new home has hit an all-time
high of $300,000. One factor driving this is last year’s
tax law which raised taxes on wealthy homeowners in high-tax states. As
they seek to avoid taxes, they are putting more expensive homes on the
market. But the prices of those luxury homes are falling.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott

FIRST READ: Twitter killed the political star
How much has social media ruined American politics and political journalism?
Well, check out these numbers from the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll:
- 57 percent of Americans say social media does more to divide the country than unite it;
- 61 percent say social media does more to spread unfair attacks and rumors against public figures and corporations instead of holding them accountable;
- 55 percent say it does more to spread lies and falsehoods rather than news and information;
- and a whopping 82 percent of Americans say social media does more to waste time – instead of using it well.
Those numbers come, of course, as nearly seven-in-10 Americans – 69 percent – say they use social media at least once a day.
There are many culprits for what ails American politics right now. The urban-versus-rural divide. Gerrymandering. Polarized media. Partisan cable TV.
But when you look at these poll numbers, you have to add social media to the list.
By the way, when was the last time the two major political parties BOTH had relatively popular presidential nominees? It was back in 2008 – hello, Barack Obama and John McCain – when Twitter and Facebook were in their infancy.
We aren’t saying there’s a direct correlation, but it’s something to chew on.
Social media erases nuance and the ability to pause – you never stop.
And for American politics to succeed, you need some nuance, as well as time to reflect.

TWEET OF THE DAY: How would Twitter of 2019 have reacted to Obama of 2007
Border troubles for Republicans
President Trump today heads to the California-Mexico border – a day after backing off his threat of closing the southern border.
Trump’s shutting-down-the-border threat didn’t please Republicans from border states.
Here what Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who’s up for re-election next year, told reporters this week: “I told [Trump] that I understand his frustration, but I also believe shutting down the border would have a lot of unintended consequences.”
Remember, Republicans got CREAMED in border states in 2018 – they lost seven House seats in California; they lost a Senate and House seat in Arizona; they got swept in New Mexico; and Democrats saw their best performance in Texas in 28 years.
And it raises the question: Are Trump’s border games good for border-state Republicans?

2020 VISION: Howard Schultz pulls a Clint Eastwood
Here was possible independent presidential candidate talking about immigration in his town hall on Fox News last night:
“[Immigration] cannot be solved currently because of the ideology of both parties… I would bring the people into the room. I would say, ‘You cannot come in here with ideology or ego.’ What I want to do is put an empty chair in the room, and that chair represents the American people.”
More Schultz: “And we’re not going to leave the room until we solve the problem for the American people. The problem that we have with both parties – the American people are not in the room.”

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 62 percent
That’s the share of Florida voters who approve of Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ job performance, according to a Mason-Dixon poll of the state.
DeSantis is even above 50 percent approval in blue-leaning southeastern Florida, home to the Democratic stronghold of Miami.
Almost six-in-10 independents approve of his job, along with 41 percent of Democrats.
Other pollsters have seen a similar trend too—Quinnipiac University found DeSantis with a 59 percent favorable rating in its poll last month. That’s the highest gubernatorial approval rating in Florida over the past decade of its polling, Quinnipiac said.
These numbers are especially notable considering Florida’s partisan split, not to mention the fact that DeSantis is just months past a divisive gubernatorial race where Democrats pulled no punches against him.
THE LID: Leaders of the pack
Don’t miss the pod from Thursday, in which one of us singles out the early frontrunners in the 2020 Democratic presidential race.
ICYMI: This week’s overlooked stories, per NBC’s Kyle Stewart
Accusations against Joe Biden! Trump retreats on the border and health care! And did William Barr accurately summarize Robert Mueller’s findings? Those were the big stories this week.
But don’t miss these other stories that would have garnered more attention in any other era:
- Donors to the Trump inaugural committee got ambassador nominations. But are they qualified?
- White House whistleblower says Trump administration overturned 25 security clearance denials.
- Jared Kushner identified as a senior White House official whose security clearance was denied by career officials.
- North Carolina GOP chair, major donor charged with bribery.
Other news that’s out there today…
Michael Cohen claims Trump “encouraged” him to lie to Congress in new bid to avoid jail time.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tells the Washington Post she’s “agnostic” about Medicare-for-All.
Trump is backing off his threat to close the border.
