AMERICAN MINUTE

View as Webpage https://newsmaven.io/americanminute/ American Minute with Bill Federer D-Day “A Struggle to Preserve our Republic, our Religion & our Civilization”-FDR, June 6, 1944 After World War I, Germany’s economy suffered from depression and a devaluation of their currency.
On January 30, 1933, Adolph Hitler was elected Chancellor of Germany by promising hope and universal healthcare. Less than a month later, on February 27, 1933, a crisis occurred — the Rheichstag, Germany’s Capitol Building, was suspiciously set on fire.
Hitler was quick to use this crisis as an opportunity to set aside Germany’s Weimar Republic and seize emergency powers as a dictator.
He suspended basic rights and accused his political opponents of conspiracy. He ordered mass arrests followed by executions, even ordering his SS and Gestapo secret police to murder rivals, as on the Night of the Long Knives. Hitler confiscated guns, forced old German military leaders to retire, and swayed the public with mesmerizing speeches. Rise of the Tyrant – How Democracies & Republics Rise & Fall In socialist countries, a person’s life is only of worth if it benefits the state.
Those not benefiting the state are removed. National Socialist Workers Party operated over 1,200 concentration camps where millions of Jews, Poles, Gypsies, handicapped, and others were experimented upon, tortured, or were killed in gas chambers. German churches were silent, as they had for centuries taught pietism – a version of separation of church and state where Christians were instructed to focus on their own personal spiritual life and withdraw from involvement in worldly politics.
As a result, the church stood by as the National Socialist Workers Party usurped power, only to be stopped by the sacrifice of millions of courageous Allied soldiers. By the time a few courageous Germany church leaders spoke out, such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, it was too late – the government had grown so powerful it simply arrested and executed them. Hitler’s National Socialist Workers’ Party used diplomatic intimidation, deception, and Blitzkrieg “lightning war” attacks to take control of: Austria, The Sudeten Region, Bohemia, Moravia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, France, Monaco, Greece, The Channel Island (UK), Czechoslovakia, Baltic states, Serbia, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Finland, Croatia, and more. Other Axis Powers were also aggressively expanding:
Italy had invaded Ethiopia in 1935, and
the Empire of Japan had invaded China in 1937. The United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941, when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. The turning point in the Pacific War was the Battle of Midway, June 4, 1942. The turning point in the War in Europe was D-Day, JUNE 6, 1944.
Over 160,000 troops from America, Britain, Canada, free France, Poland, and other nations landed along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast of France. It was the largest seaborne invasion force in world history, supported by 13,000 aircraft, 5,000 ships with 195,700 navy personnel.
Prior to the invasion, Allies attempted to mislead the Nazis as to where the attack would take place. The invasion was supposed to take place June 5, but the weather was so bad aircraft could not fly. General Eisenhower gave the risky order to delay the attack 24 hours to allow the weather and tide to improve.
The night before, Allied aircraft launched an enormous air assault on Nazi defenses, batteries, and bridges. Then paratroopers were sent in behind enemy lines to cut off their supplies.
President Ronald Reagan stated at the 40th Anniversary of D-Day:
“Something else helped the men of D-day: their rockhard belief that Providence would have a great hand in the events that would unfold here; that God was an ally in this great cause.
And so, the night before the invasion, when Colonel Wolverton asked his parachute troops to kneel with him in prayer he told them:
‘Do not bow your heads, but look up so you can see God and ask His blessing in what we’re about to do.’
Also that night, General Matthew Ridgway on his cot, listening in the darkness for the promise God made to Joshua: ‘I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.'” Then elite Army Rangers went in to scale the cliffs and take out Nazi machine gun positions. President Reagan stated:
“40 years ago at this moment, the air was dense with smoke and the cries of men, and the air was filled with the crack of rifle fire and the roar of cannon.
At dawn, on the morning of the 6th of June, 1944, 225 Rangers jumped off the British landing craft and ran to the bottom of these cliffs.
Their mission was one of the most difficult and daring of the invasion: to climb these sheer and desolate cliffs and take out the enemy guns.
The Allies had been told that some of the mightiest of these guns were here and they would be trained on the beaches to stop the Allied advance. … The Rangers looked up and saw the enemy soldiers — the edge of the cliffs shooting down at them with machineguns and throwing grenades.
And the American Rangers began to climb.
They shot rope ladders over the face of these cliffs and began to pull themselves up. When one Ranger fell, another would take his place.
When one rope was cut, a Ranger would grab another and begin his climb again. They climbed, shot back, and held their footing. … Soon, one by one, the Rangers pulled themselves over the top, and in seizing the firm land at the top of these cliffs, they began to seize back the continent of Europe. Two hundred and twenty-five came here.
After 2 days of fighting, only 90 could still bear arms.” At 6:30am, Allied forces began landing.
Troops ran across the heavily fortified beaches of:
Utah Beach Pointe du Hoc Omaha Beach Gold Beach Juno Beach Sword Beach Ocean water ran red with the blood of almost 9,000 killed or wounded.
In the next two and a half months, over two million soldiers arrived on the shores. Pairs was liberated on August 25, 1944, and the Nazi war machine back over the Seine River.
It was a turning point in World War II. Reagan continued:
“The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next.
It was the deep knowledge — and pray God we have not lost it — that there is a profound, moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest.” Shortly after D-Day, a courageous German resistance movement was formed which attempted to assassinate Hitler, but he survived.
Hitler retaliated by killing over 7,000 Germans. Miracles in American History (Vol. 3: Episodes 21-30) In his D-Day Orders, JUNE 6, 1944, Supreme Allied Commander General Dwight Eisenhower sent nearly 100,000 Allied troops marching across Europe to defeat Hitler’s National Socialist Workers Party:
“You are about to embark upon a great crusade … The eyes of the world are upon you.
The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you … You will bring about … the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe …
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely …
And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.” President Franklin Roosevelt stated JUNE 6, 1944:
“My fellow Americans: Last night, when I spoke with you about the fall of Rome, I knew at that moment that troops of the United States and our allies were crossing the Channel in another and greater operation …
I ask you to join with me in prayer: Almighty God, Our sons, pride of our Nation, this day have set upon a mighty endeavor, a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion, and our civilization
Give strength to their arms, stoutness to their hearts, steadfastness in their faith. They will need Thy blessings. Their road will be long and hard.
For the enemy is strong. He may hurl back our forces … We know that by Thy grace, and by the righteousness of our cause, our sons will triumph …
Some will never return. Embrace these, Father, and receive them, Thy heroic servants, into Thy kingdom …” FDR concluded:
“Help us, Almighty God, to rededicate ourselves in renewed faith in Thee in this hour of great sacrifice …
I ask that our people devote themselves in a continuance of prayer. As we rise to each new day, and again when each day is spent, let words of prayer be on our lips, invoking Thy help to our efforts.
Give us strength … and, O Lord, give us Faith. Give us Faith in Thee … With Thy blessing, we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy …
And a peace that will let all of men live in freedom, reaping the just rewards of their honest toil. Thy will be done, Almighty God. Amen.” FDR’s D-Day Prayer will be added to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., thanks to the efforts of Chris Long of the Ohio Christian Alliance who initiated The D-Day Landing Prayer Act (S 1044). A bipartisan bill was introduced in the House by Ohio Congressman Bill Johnson, introduced in the Senate by Ohio Senator Rob Portman, and signed into law in 2014. As the memorial is to acknowledge prayer, Federal funds cannot be used to avoid lawsuits, therefore all funds for the project must be voluntarily given.

Eleven months after D-Day, the war in Europe ended with an Allied victory on May 8, 1945. The Faith of FDR – from President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Public Papers 1933-1945 Franklin Roosevelt stated in his D-Day Prayer that the war was “a struggle to preserve our republic, our religion, and our civilization.” He gave further insight during a Fireside Chat, April 28, 1942:
“THIS GREAT WAR effort must be carried through … It shall not be imperiled by the handful of noisy traitors — betrayers of America, betrayers of Christianity itself.” FDR stated at Madison Square Garden, NY, October 28, 1940:
“WE GUARD AGAINST the forces of anti-Christian aggression, which may attack us from without, and the forces of ignorance and fear which may corrupt us from within.” FDR stated in Brooklyn, New York, November 1, 1940:
“THOSE FORCES HATE democracy and Christianity as two phases of the same civilization. They oppose democracy because it is Christian. They oppose Christianity because it preaches democracy.” FDR stated in a Labor Day Address, September 1, 1941:
“PRESERVATION OF THESE rights is vitally important now, not only to us who enjoy them, but to the whole future of Christian civilization.” FDR addressed Congress, March 1, 1945:
“I SAW SEVASTOPOL and Yalta! And I know that there is not room enough on earth for both German militarism and Christian decency.” FDR stated May 27, 1941:
“THE WHOLE WORLD is divided between … pagan brutality and the Christian ideal. We choose human freedom which is the Christian ideal.” The Faith of FDR – from President Franklin D. LARRY J. SABATO’S CRYSTAL BALL

IN THIS ISSUE:

– The Shadow of 1998 THE SHADOW OF 1998
Revisiting and reassessing the GOP’s poor showing and the role of impeachment in the result
By Kyle Kondik
Managing Editor, Sabato’s Crystal Ball

KEY POINTS FROM THIS ARTICLE — The 1998 election has invariably come up a lot as House Democrats consider whether to impeach President Donald Trump. — That’s because Republicans had high expectations for that election but ended up flopping. — While impeachment probably did hurt the Republicans in some districts, it may have been that Clinton’s popularity in a time of peace and prosperity would have insulated Democrats from big losses even if the GOP had held off on impeachment. Reconsidering the 1998 midterm The Democrats’ 40-seat net gain in the House last fall was the latest example of the midterm election serving as a check on the White House. Since the Civil War, there have now been 40 midterms, and the president’s party has lost ground in the House in 37 of those elections. Yet one of those exceptions was recent, and it’s an election that has been and will be referenced a lot as House Democrats consider whether to impeach President Donald Trump: 1998. That year, Democrats won four more seats than they had won in 1996, providing a rare exception to the usual midterm rule. That election took place under the shadow of impeachment: Independent counsel Kenneth Starr submitted his report laying out 11 possible grounds for impeaching President Bill Clinton in September, and the GOP-controlled House voted to open impeachment proceedings against Clinton in early October. As Democrats ponder whether to open such proceedings against President Donald Trump, the specter of 1998 hangs over the choice. The conventional wisdom about 1998 is that the Republicans were on track for big gains, but their pursuit of impeachment prevented them from realizing them. Clinton biographer Michael Tomasky summed up the pre-midterm thinking this way: “it was expected that the Republicans would augment their majorities, and probably by a considerable amount. Rarely in politics had anything been so obvious.” That assessment was informed by history, and not just the usual midterm pattern cited above: This was a “sixth-year itch” election, a midterm conducted during a second consecutive term of a party’s control of the White House. There were some catastrophically bad “sixth-year itch” elections in the recent memory of the time: 1938, 1958, 1966, and 1974 all qualified (later, 2006 and perhaps 2014 also would). The president’s party in those years were all undone by overreach, scandal, war, recession, or some combination of those factors. It may have seemed that Clinton’s scandal could have been the trigger for a similar result in 1998, but that didn’t happen, in part because Republicans misplayed their hand on impeachment. So the argument now is that because impeachment didn’t work for Republicans in 1998, it won’t work for Democrats in 2020. That may or may not be the case if Democrats do pursue impeachment, but if 1998 is going to keep coming up, that election itself merits a closer look. While it’s impossible to know what would’ve happened in some alternate universe where Republicans did not open impeachment proceedings of Clinton prior to the election, there’s some reason to believe that the effects of that decision were not as electorally significant as popularly remembered. The GOP’s failure to make gains in the House or the Senate came as a surprise to many. Two days after the elections, a New York Times piece detailing the fallout opened as follows: “Stunned by the Democratic resurgence in the midterm elections, Congressional Republicans tore into one another yesterday over who was to blame for their failure to make the traditional opposition party gains in an off-year election.” House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R, GA-6), whose confrontational style helped set up the first GOP House majority in four decades, would announce his resignation a couple of days later. “It seemed somehow the ultimate irony of this strange political year, the year stigmatized by President Clinton’s affair with Monica S. Lewinsky. Instead of Bill Clinton being the one to fall, it was Newt Gingrich,” the Times observed. It later emerged that Gingrich had been carrying on an affair with a House staffer and the man who was to be Gingrich’s successor, Rep. Bob Livingston (R, LA-1), also admitted to infidelity and announced his resignation during impeachment debates in the House a few days before Christmas in 1998. Needless to say, these revelations did not bolster GOP efforts to actually remove Clinton from office, which never seemed likely anyway. Republicans only had 55 Senate seats, so they needed several Democrats to back impeachment in a Senate trial to reach the two-thirds support needed to remove Clinton. As it was, the Republican House would eventually vote to impeach Clinton, but Clinton easily survived in the Senate as all Democrats voted not guilty and a handful of Republicans voted not guilty on one or both charges. Clinton left office very popular, but he was unable to hand off the White House to Vice President Al Gore, who narrowly lost the Electoral College to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush in 2000. Following his comfortable reelection victory in 1996, Clinton’s approval rating was consistently very strong throughout 1997 and 1998, even as he would deal with personal scandal: He spent 1997 mostly in the high 50s in approval, according to FiveThirtyEight’s historical average, and in 1998 his approval was in the 60s, even after reports of his affair emerged in January 1998. The economy was strong and the nation was at peace. These are not the sort of conditions that were suggestive of a Republican wave. But Republicans had high expectations anyway. “Gingrich spent the fall boasting that he foresaw his Republicans gaining as many as forty House seats,” Tomasky wrote. Was such a wave ever truly plausible? There are reasons to believe it wasn’t. As we just noted, Clinton’s approval rating was consistently high throughout his second term. Thus, one of the usual contributors to a midterm wave — an unpopular president — was missing from the equation. So was a backlash to legislative overreach, as Clinton had lost the House and the Senate in 1994 and thus could hew to the political middle. Additionally, there’s not much sign from public polling that the battle for the House in the 1998 cycle appeared to be a Republican rout but then snapped back to the Democrats. House generic ballot polls from Gallup/CNN/USA Today, Pew Research, and NBC News/Wall Street Journal in 1997 all found the Democrats leading, according to a compilation of such polls from PollingReport.com. (One has to account for the reality that the House generic ballot generally overstated the Democratic advantage both back then and even for much of the recent 2014 and 2016 cycles. Still, it’s not like there was some obvious indicator from polls that the GOP was set up for a wave year in 1998 given the 1997 polling.) From mid-August through Election Day, the average of 20 generic ballot polls in the PollingReport database showed an almost exact tie. As it was, the GOP won the House national popular vote by about a point and won a narrow 223-212 majority in 1998. One also has to consider the historical context of the time. Big midterm swings have been common in recent years, as the presidential out party has gained double-digits’ worth of House seats in each of the last four midterms. The majority has changed hands in three of those elections — Democrats won it in 2006 and 2018, and Republicans in 2010 — and the average loss has been about three-dozen seats in each midterm, an average dragged down by the GOP picking up only 13 seats in 2014, a gain that almost certainly would’ve been bigger had the existing Republican majority not already been 234 seats (as it was, the Republicans would hold 247 seats after the 2014 election, their biggest majority since right before the Great Depression). But big swings were not as common in the late 20th century. From 1978 through 2002, there were several midterms where very little changed in the house. That era contained two of the three elections since the Civil War where the president’s party netted House seats (1998 and 2002), and two other years (1986 and 1990) where the president’s party only suffered losses in the single digits. The Democrats lost only 15 seats in 1978 under President Jimmy Carter (the real storm would come in the Reagan Revolution two years later, although Democrats retained the House majority even then). In 1982, President Reagan’s Republicans lost 26 seats, not too bad considering Reagan’s approval was weak, the nation was in the midst of a bad recession, and Democratic gains were significantly padded by gerrymanders in several states. The only real midterm wave election in that quarter-century span was 1994, when the GOP netted 54 seats and the House majority for the first time since the 1952 election. But Clinton was legitimately unpopular in 1994. He was not unpopular in 1998 despite his troubles, nor was Reagan in 1986 or George H.W. Bush in 1990. The Republicans may also have been capped out in the House at least to some degree. They followed up their fabulous gains in 1994 with only a minor three-seat net loss in 1996, as they continued to gain ground in the historically Democratic but conservative and Republican-trending South while losing some ground in the rest of the nation. American politics can sometimes follow a pattern of “surge and decline,” but Republicans suffered little decline in the House from 1994 to 1996, and Democrats thus had no surge to defend in 1998 after 1996. Republicans also were still in the midst of translating their potential in the conservative South into electoral reality. At that time, Republicans were still on the wrong side of a Democratic gerrymander in Texas, where Democrats would cling to a majority in the state delegation until newly-empowered state Republicans imposed a new map in advance of the 2004 election. The next big Republican breakthrough in the South would have to wait until 2010, when that GOP wave wiped out many of the last white Democrats from conservative districts. Meanwhile, Democrats benefited from some key Republican retirements, such as that of moderate Rep. Scott Klug (R, WI-2) in a district based around liberal Madison. Clinton had won the district by 22 points in 1996; Tammy Baldwin (D), now a U.S. senator, would flip the seat in 1998. House elections did not follow presidential voting as closely then as they do now, but part of the 1998 story was Democratic districts like WI-2 coming into line with their presidential partisanship. Democrats also were able to hold some difficult open seats, like IN-9, where Rep. Lee Hamilton (D) had retired and where neither the Democratic or Republican candidate emphasized impeachment. That said, there definitely is some district-by-district evidence suggesting that the impeachment battle helped Democrats pick up some seats (the anecdotes that follow are from the 2000 edition of the Almanac of American Politics). In NJ-12, first-term Rep. Mike Pappas (R) recited a poem on the House floor: “Twinkle twinkle, Kenneth Starr, now we see how brave you are. We could not see which way to go, if you did not lead us so.” Rush Holt (D) put the clip in campaign ads and eked out a three-point victory. Impeachment may have made the difference, although Pappas had only won by three points himself in 1996 in a district Clinton had carried by six. Jay Inslee (D), now the governor of Washington state and a 2020 presidential candidate, was in 1998 a former House member who had lost in the 1994 GOP wave. He ran in a different, more Democratic district than the one he had lost four years prior and beat Rep. Rick White (R, WA-1), who himself had beaten another now-familiar name from Washington politics, now-Sen. Maria Cantwell (D), in 1994. Inslee ran ads arguing that “Rick White and Newt Gingrich shouldn’t be dragging us through this.” In suburban Philadelphia’s PA-13, Joe Hoeffel (D) reclaimed another Clinton-won district four years after former Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky (D) lost it to Jon Fox (R) in the wake of her famous and decisive vote for Clinton’s budget and tax increase in 1993. Hoeffel stayed away from Clinton but did have Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign for him. Despite the above examples, House Democratic candidates generally did not run ads on impeachment, according to the Almanac; one who did, Chris Gorman (D), narrowly lost to Rep. Anne Northup (R, KY-3) in a Democratic-leaning Louisville-based seat, although the outcome was even closer in 1996, when she had very narrowly defeated a Democratic incumbent. Gingrich, meanwhile, helped orchestrate a late October advertising blitz of key House districts focused on Clinton’s relationship with Lewinsky that probably was a miscalculation. Impeachment did allow some Democrats to break with the national party: for instance, Rep. James Maloney (D, CT-5), who was damaged by campaign finance problems, voted for the GOP motion to hold impeachment hearings; he won narrowly. Overall, only 17 races in 1998 were decided by five points or less. The Democrats won 10 and the Republicans won seven. Perhaps in the absence of impeachment, the GOP would’ve won the majority of the closer races and could’ve netted seats instead of losing a small number. But even without impeachment they may not have performed way better than they otherwise did. This is all a long way of saying that while the GOP’s pursuit of impeachment may have hurt them in the House, it’s hard to know definitively whether it made a dramatic difference in the outcome. It may not have, given Clinton’s high approval and conditions of relative peace and prosperity. What does this all mean for how House Democrats should handle Trump and impeachment? Perhaps it doesn’t really provide much guidance at all. Those who do not want to pursue impeachment can and will point to 1998 as an argument against it, and there’s some evidence to suggest that there was a backlash against the GOP. But it may have been the case that Republicans were not in line for big House gains in any event that year given the broader peace and prosperity the nation was enjoying. And supporters of impeachment can argue that Trump, whose approval is in the low-to-mid 40s, is an easier target than Clinton, whose approval was north of 60% during his impeachment battle. 1998 was also a midterm year, and not one that featured particularly high turnout (38% of those eligible, according to turnout expert Michael McDonald). The next election, 2020, is a presidential year where turnout could eclipse 65%, which would make it the highest turnout of eligible voters since women won the right to vote a century ago. One wonders if impeachment would change the dynamic — it could provide extra motivation to one side or the other (or both), but motivation seems very high already. This is not intended to be an argument for or against the Democrats pursuing impeachment. Rather, we just wanted to add some context to the circumstances of the last time impeachment was a dominant story in the run-up to an election. As to the possible effect of impeachment in 2020, it may be instructive to recall Gingrich’s words in the aftermath of his 1998 disappointment. “Things were happening out there that none of us fully understand,” he said. Thursday, June 6, 2019 Biden 2020 Update “Joe Biden, the front-runner for the Democratic 2020 presidential nomination, released a climate change plan on Tuesday that would pour $1.7 trillion of investment into achieving 100% clean energy and net-zero emissions by 2050, in part using revenues from reversing Trump administration corporate tax cuts.” Reuters

On Wednesday, “his campaign confirmed that he supports [the Hyde Amendment] a four-decade-old ban on federal funding for abortion that much of his party has vowed to overturn.” Politico

A recent poll of likely Michigan voters “found both former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders leading Trump by 12 percentage points if the vote were to be held today.” Reuters From the Left The left credits the progressive movement for making climate change a top issue for candidates, and criticizes Biden for his stance on abortion and overall moderate leanings. “The very fact that Biden felt the need to release a climate plan near the start of his policy rollout shows the influence and success of Ocasio-Cortez and her allies in the climate movement.”
Ella Nilsen, Vox

“Both [Biden’s] plan and the Warren plan—and the Inslee climate plan, and O’Rourke’s proposal—adopt [the Green New Deal’s] theory of change, emphasizing that gushing federal investment can help the U.S. economy solve the problem of climate change. All four proposals, to varying degrees, promise a new age of plenty, a dawning era of renewed American dauntlessness. And they show how the window of political possibility has already moved significantly… Even if neither Biden nor Warren becomes president, their proposals demonstrate how the Green New Deal seems to be winning the battle of ideas among Democrats, at least for now.”
Robinson Meyer, The Atlantic

Regarding Biden’s support for the Hyde Amendment, he “has given two different answers on a key abortion rights question in recent weeks, and the more recent answer, the official one coming from his campaign, is the wrong one.”
Laura Clawson, Daily Kos

“The rationale behind the Hyde Amendment is that taxpayers should not have to fund things to which they are privately opposed… This position privileges the moral objections of certain Americans over the basic human rights of others, and ignores the simple fact that in any system of government, elected officials will spend some money on some things which some constituents do not think are in the public interest. The ability of conservatives to carve out women’s health care for special treatment, turning the provision of basic medical care into a heated political debate, is a testament to how easily latent misogyny still permeates the policymaking process.”
Jay Willis, GQ

“In 2016, a poll of voters in key battleground states found that 76 percent of voters agreed with the following statement: ‘However we feel about abortion, politicians should not be allowed to deny a woman’s health coverage for it just because she’s poor.’ Sixty-two percent agreed that ‘when Medicaid covers pregnancy care but withholds coverage for abortion, we’re taking away a low-income woman’s ability to make important personal decisions based on what is best for her circumstances’…

“And a recent poll commissioned by a consortium of women’s health groups found that 9 in 10 women of color believe ‘that a woman being able to control if, when, and how to have children provides both individual and societal benefits.’ If Joe Biden wants to carry the banner of a party that claims to champion, protect and uphold the inalienable rights of black, brown and poor people, he must reverse his support of the Hyde Amendment and follow the lead of his fellow Democratic candidates.”
Danielle Campoamor, Washington Post

Critics of the candidate argue, “Want to defeat Trump? Attack Biden… Many progressives are understandably fearful that attacking the presumptive frontrunner might weaken him and give Trump ammunition for the general election. But challenging Biden’s record is important. For example, his core base of support – older Democrats – needs to know what an unreliable defender of Social Security and Medicare he is. By challenging him on his record, especially in the eyes of older, traditional Democratic voters, progressives could break the myth of Biden’s ‘electability’. (A strange trope given that Biden has tried and failed to be a presidential nominee since the 1980s.)…

“Anyone angling to be the Democratic nominee should espouse a real progressive agenda – just being ‘anti-Trump’ isn’t enough.”
Bhaskar Sunkara, The Guardian

“For Warren or anyone else to prevent the uniquely depressing experience of a Biden ‘national unity’ campaign, specifically targeted at a tiny cadre of wobbly Trump voters and Jeff Flake-style dissident Republicans, something has to change before next winter. Democratic voters and the media and basically everyone else must get over their skittish, fearful response to the Trump presidency, and their based-on-nothing certainty that nominating a progressive or a woman or a socialist or anybody who isn’t an avuncular white man with a vaguely reassuring demeanor and no discernible ideology will once again lead to disaster.”
Andrew O’Hehir, Salon From the Right The right criticizes Biden’s climate plan, and argues that his current position on abortion is in line with popular opinion. They see him as a formidable opponent against President Trump. “Biden’s theory seems to be that tariffs to protect U.S. jobs are bad, but tariffs to combat climate change are good. Somehow I don’t think that will fly in the heartland. That fact blows a hole in Biden’s main selling point, that his purported moderation and working-class background will help him regain votes among the blue-collar Democrats whose defection elected Trump. A climate plan such as this one easily lets Trump argue that Biden may have been born like you, but he left you for the D.C. liberal swamp long ago.”
Henry Olsen, Washington Post

“Biden got one thing right in his proposal. The fastest and safest way to reduce our reliance on carbon fuel sources is through the use of nuclear power. But the rest of the plan that focuses on high-speed rail, electric vehicles, massive government investments, and increasing government regulations and reporting requirements on corporations is taking us in precisely the wrong direction. Especially since his plan to pay for it is to raise the corporate tax rate, once again making America less competitive for investment than other nations. As of today, it seems all of the [Democratic] candidates for the Presidency are bent on implementing policies that lead to catastrophic economic upheaval.”
Stacey Lennox, The Resurgent

Regarding Biden’s support for the Hyde Amendment, he “seems to back the same hesitant tolerance for abortion as a last resort that half of the country holds… Since Roe v. Wade was decided, roughly 20% of the nation has remained solidly pro-life under all circumstances. The hardline pro-choice coalition has oscillated ever so slightly, now composing nearly 30% of the population. Half of the country is caught in the middle, and polling indicates that their ethos on the matter lies somewhere between ‘safe, legal, and rare’ and the acceptance of abortion as a necessary evil that ought to be avoided…

“Yes, 6 out of 10 Americans support legal abortion in the first trimester of pregnancy, but nearly the same amount support the Hyde Amendment. Contrary to the loudest voices in the primary and the media, even most Democrats do not view abortion as a positive good. Just 44% of Democrats oppose the Hyde Amendment, and fewer than 1 in 5 support legalizing third trimester abortion, which multiple presidential candidates have endorsed… Biden may be blasted for inconsistency, and he’ll certainly come under fire from the far left, but he may be more in line with the average American on abortion than any other candidate in the race.”
Tiana Lowe, Washington Examiner

Regarding his candidacy overall, “There’s a lot of conventional wisdom in Washington that the early front-runner always loses. And that’s true except when it isn’t… in 1999, George W. Bush dominated the polls and, except for a brief scare from Senator John McCain in the New Hampshire primary, essentially cruised to victory. A key part of Bush’s early success, not just in polls but in fundraising, stemmed from the fact that he was promising a Bush restoration…

“He was offering a referendum on the incumbent president and the scandals and partisanship that defined the end of his administration. He vowed to restore ‘honor and dignity to the Oval Office’ and to be a ‘uniter not a divider.’ The very different context notwithstanding, this is pretty much Biden’s campaign message. The ideological, activist, and Twitter-obsessed base of the Democratic party may not like Biden’s pitch. But it sure looks like rank-and-file Democrats do.”
Jonah Goldberg, National Review

He “is taking heavy fire [from second-tier candidates]… How Mr. Biden parries these assaults will be his next big test. If he goes into August bloodied but unbowed and returns the campaign’s focus to his strengths—he is a steady, likable choice who matches up best against the president—Mr. Biden will have bought time to deepen his organization before the opening contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.”
Karl Rove, Wall Street Journal

“If Joe Biden can win his way through the primaries, he’s almost lab-engineered to beat Trump. He doesn’t cause Republican panic, he has the potential to connect with white working-class voters in a way that Hillary couldn’t in 2016, and he has a potential to connect better with black voters than Hillary did… if Biden emerges from [this] crucible, Trump will face a very different challenge than he faced in 2016.”
David French, National Review On the bright side…

POLITICO Playbook: Guess who else voted against federal funding for abortion?

DRIVING THE DAY

THE THING ABOUT THE HYDE AMENDMENT … Over the last day, there’s been a pile-on on JOE BIDEN — Beto O’Rourke, Elizabeth Warren and others have ganged up against the former VP over his support of the Hyde Amendment, language that prohibits most federal funding for abortion.

BUT … If you are or have been a member of Congress — 15 people in this field — and you’ve voted for big spending packages, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve also voted for the amendment. OF COURSE, Biden is actively supporting it, and that’s a bit unique. But this language has been a part of a lot of funding bills and gotten plenty of votes from Democrats over the years.

AN EXAMPLE: ELIZABETH WARREN SAYS SHE DOESN’T LIKE THE HYDE AMENDMENT … Warren told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on Wednesday night that “we do not pass laws that take away the freedom from the women who are most vulnerable.” Her team tweeted: “I will not support any effort to take rights away from women who are the most vulnerable. It’s time for Hyde to go. #WarrenTownHall”

… BUT, OF COURSE, SHE’S VOTED FOR IT! It doesn’t take long to find an example of Warren voting for the Hyde Amendment. Take this bill, which funded a big chunk of the government last year.

IT INCLUDED this language: “(a) None of the funds appropriated in this Act, and none of the funds in any trust fund to which funds are appropriated in this Act, shall be expended for any abortion. (b) None of the funds appropriated in this Act, and none of the funds in any trust fund to which funds are appropriated in this Act, shall be expended for health benefits coverage that includes coverage of abortion.”

WARREN voted for this bill twice. So did Michael Bennet, Cory Booker, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Eric Swalwell and others. Bernie Sanders voted no. President DONALD TRUMP signed it into law.

TARIFF UPDATE … TRUMP this morning in Ireland, via pooler Gabby Orr: “‘Mexico was in yesterday. They’re coming back this morning … I think a lot of progress was made yesterday, but we need to make a lot of progress. …

“We’re having a great talk with Mexico. We’ll see what happens, but something pretty dramatic could happen. We’ve told Mexico the tariffs go on, and I mean it too. And I’m very happy with it. And a lot of people, senators included, they have no idea what they’re talking about when it comes to tariffs. They have absolutely no idea. When you have the money, when you have the product, when you have the thing that everybody wants, you’re in a position to do very well with tariffs and that’s where we are.”

— MEANWHILE, BACK HOME … “Republicans at war over Trump’s tariffs,” by Burgess Everett, Melanie Zanona and Marianne LeVine

THE STORY EVERYONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT … HEATHER CAYGLE: “Pelosi tells Dems she wants to see Trump ‘in prison’”: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi told senior Democrats that she’d like to see President Donald Trump ‘in prison’ as she clashed with House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler in a meeting on Tuesday night over whether to launch impeachment proceedings. …

“Nadler pressed Pelosi to allow his committee to launch an impeachment inquiry against Trump — the second such request he’s made in recent weeks only to be rebuffed by the California Democrat and other senior leaders. Pelosi stood firm, reiterating that she wasn’t open to the idea of impeaching Trump at this time.

“‘I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,’ Pelosi said, according to multiple Democratic sources familiar with the meeting. … In Tuesday’s meeting, some committee chairs expressed frustration about the appearance that rank-and-file members — rather than party leaders — were leading the caucus’ oversight strategy, including what they do on impeachment, according to one source familiar with the meeting.” POLITICO

Good Thursday morning.

HAPPENING TODAY — “World marks 75 years since D-Day in solemn observances,” by AP’s Raf Casert and John Leicester at Omaha Beach, France: “The five beaches are silent at dawn but forever haunted. As the sun rose Thursday over the Normandy coastline where thousands of men bled and died 75 years ago, a fast-diminishing number of World War II veterans remembered D-Day and hoped the world never forgets the sacrifices made to dismantle Nazi tyranny.

“The sea of mercury blue couldn’t have been more peaceful as day broke over Omaha Beach, the first of five code-named beaches where the waters ran red the morning of June 6, 1944, when Allied forces came ashore to push the Nazis out of France. Hundreds of people, civilians and military alike, hailing from around the world, gathered at the water’s edge, remembering the troops who stormed the fortified Normandy beaches to help turn the tide of the war and give birth to a new Europe, since at peace.

“On the western edge of Omaha, dense crowds formed a human chain and tossed red and white chrysanthemums into the gently lapping waves, remembering. Veterans’ descendants spoke about family members who fought on the beach and laid red roses at the feet of a statue of an infantryman clutching a rifle and hauling a fallen comrade.” AP

— TRUMP and first lady MELANIA TRUMP are in Normandy for the commemoration. The two will attend an Omaha Beach briefing, fly-over viewing and viewing of the Normandy American Cemetery.

DEPT. OF WHAT COULD GO WRONG? … WAPO: “Trump to speak at Lincoln Memorial during Fourth of July celebration”: “Trump’s appearance is likely to bring with it a host of new security and logistical challenges and reshape a decades-old, nonpartisan celebration that annually draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city’s monumental core.”

SCOOP — “In secret recording, Pompeo opens up about Venezuelan opposition, says keeping it united ‘has proven devilishly difficult,’” by WaPo’s John Hudson: “Secretary of State Mike Pompeo offered a candid assessment of Venezuela’s opposition during a closed-door meeting in New York last week, saying that the opponents of President Nicolás Maduro are highly fractious and that U.S. efforts to keep them together have been more difficult than is publicly known.

“‘Our conundrum, which is to keep the opposition united, has proven devilishly difficult,’ Pompeo said in an audio recording obtained by The Washington Post. ‘The moment Maduro leaves, everybody’s going to raise their hands and [say], “Take me, I’m the next president of Venezuela.” It would be forty-plus people who believe they’re the rightful heir to Maduro.’” WaPo

MILESTONE: “Venezuela has overtaken China to become the No. 1 country of origin for those claiming asylum in the U.S. upon arrival or shortly after, with nearly 30,000 Venezuelans applying for asylum with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in 2018. Nearly one-third of claims filed with the agency come from Venezuelans, the most of any country by far, according to the latest data.” Via Molly O’Toole in the L.A. Times

CNN’S PHIL MATTINGLY, ZACHARY COHEN and JEREMY HERB: “Exclusive: U.S. intel shows Saudi Arabia escalated its missile program with help from China”: “The U.S. government has obtained intelligence that Saudi Arabia has significantly escalated its ballistic missile program with the help of China, three sources with direct knowledge of the matter said, a development that threatens decades of U.S. efforts to limit missile proliferation in the Middle East.” CNN

THE CUT-’N-PASTE PRIMARY … NATASHA KORECKI and MARC CAPUTO: “It’s not just Biden: Multiple Democrats lift material from other sites”: “Twenty-four hours after Joe Biden’s campaign was taken to task for lifting portions of a climate change plan without citation, it’s clear that the former vice president has plenty of company. A sampling of policy proposals from Biden’s leading rivals suggests the lifting of direct text from academic papers, think tanks or policy institutes — and the cribbing of facts without attribution — is fairly widespread on 2020 campaign websites.

“A POLITICO review found previously published material on the official campaign websites of Sens. Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders, as well as frequent use of facts and data without citation on a number of others. ‘More than 1 million women in America today have been shot or shot at by an intimate partner,’ Harris writes under the gender equality section of her website. Everytown, the gun safety group, has a remarkably similar line on its own site, with one minor difference in scale: ‘Nearly 1 million women alive today have been shot, or shot at, by an intimate partner.’” POLITICO

2020 WATCH — “Poll shows Biden beating Trump in Texas,” by Caitlin Oprysko: “A new poll out Wednesday spells danger for President Donald Trump’s reelection chances in one of the unlikeliest of places: Texas. The Quinnipiac University poll shows that Biden would top Trump by four points — 48 percent to 44 percent — in a general election matchup there, an outcome the ruby red state hasn’t seen in four decades.” POLITICO

— “DNC opts against climate change debate, Inslee says,” by Anthony Adragna: “Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said Wednesday the [DNC] informed him it will not dedicate one of its presidential primary debates to the issue of climate change. The decision comes despite a furious push from progressive and environmental advocates for a climate change debate, as well as strong support across the Democratic ideological spectrum. …

“Inslee, who led the push among presidential candidates and has made climate change the centerpiece of his campaign, called the decision ‘deeply disappointing’ and out of step with Democratic primary voters. He also said the organization threatened not to invite him to future debates if he participated in any other climate change debate.” POLITICO

“‘I’m not a spring chicken,’ Donohue said in an interview. ‘Part of this is to achieve two things with the same action. One is to assure our financers, our members and our governments that I am going to be here for a while. The second is to demonstrate that we have continuity of management and that we’re continuing to expand and develop our organization.’ …

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION — “State Dept. Forces Out Official Who Worked on Plan That Led to Ex-Employer’s Arms Deals,” by WSJ’s Dion Nissenbaum and Alex Leary: “Charles Faulkner, who previously represented Raytheon Co., took part in an unusual Trump administration move to declare an emergency over tensions with Iran to fast-track $8 billion in arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, circumventing normal congressional review, these people said.

“He resigned as a deputy assistant secretary at the State Department in early May after working on efforts leading to the emergency declaration, these people said. Mr. Faulkner’s role in the process has raised concerns in Congress, where Democratic lawmakers want to know if Mr. Faulkner violated Trump administration ethics rules by taking part in discussions on the declaration, which cleared the way for Raytheon’s $2 billion deal to sell precision-guided missiles to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.” WSJ

THE INVESTIGATIONS — “Senate Intelligence Committee summons mysterious British security consultant,” by Natasha Bertrand: “Senate investigators have added yet another name to the constantly evolving cast of characters in the Russia investigation.

“On April 5, just 2 weeks after special counsel Robert Mueller submitted his final report on Russia’s election interference, the Senate Intelligence Committee sent a letter to a British security consultant named Walter Soriano asking for a voluntary, closed-door interview and documents with various Russia probe figures dating back to June 2015.

“The letter, obtained by Politico, offers yet another window into the panel’s secretive — but largely bipartisan — two-year-old investigation, and reveals the investigators’ interest in what, if any, role Israel may have played in attempts to manipulate the 2016 election.” POLITICO

The agency said migrants also appeared to have ‘greater difficulty’ scaling painted bollards along the border.

(January 22, 2019)

The United States is a deeply religious country. Very early on, the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) realized that if the United States was ever to be brought to socialism, religion would have to be harnessed to the task. Enter the CPUSA’s Religion Commission, where socialist pastors, religious academics, and laypeople network to spread Marxist ideas through their churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques. Since the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, astonishing accounts of torture inside Chinese labor camps, detention centers, and jails have been reported, but taking photos or video footage inside these places has never been possible, much less smuggling out such material. A Falun Gong practitioner named Yu Ming changed that. Yu recorded video footage inside Benxi Prison, and managed to smuggle the it out. Remembering D-Day 75 Years Later
From military historian Victor Davis Hanson on the occasion of the 70thanniversary, five years ago:

“Seventy years ago this June 6, the Americans, British, and Canadians stormed the beaches of Normandy in the largest amphibious invasion of Europe since the Persian king Xerxes invaded Greece in 480 B.C.

About 160,000 troops landed on five Normandy beaches and linked up with airborne troops in a masterly display of planning and courage. Within a month, almost a million Allied troops had landed in France and were heading eastward toward the German border. Within eleven months the war with Germany was over…

D-Day ushered in the end of the Third Reich. It was the most brilliantly conducted invasion in military history, and probably no one but a unique generation of British, Canadians, and Americans could have pulled it off.”

Some of the kids may be alright after all. Six North Carolina high school students raised $25,000 to send two WWII vets and their families to Normandy for the remembrance there. “It’s important for us to show that we still care. And that we still remember everyone’s sacrifice,” said one of the kids. Is it dusty in here? (NBC News)

Border Arrests Skyrocket
“U.S. Customs and Border Protections on Wednesday released its numbers for May, and they are shocking. Border Patrol apprehended or turned away more than 144,000 people last month on the southwest border, including more than 100,000 families and children.

That exceeds by 32 percent the total for April, which had represented the highest number of monthly apprehensions since 2007. Over the past eight months, CBP has detained more than 680,000 illegal immigrants—or, as acting CBP Commissioner John Sanders put it, ‘more than the population of Miami.’

Federal immigration officials have been warning that the border is “at the breaking point” for months now. Federal facilities are at or beyond capacity, as are shelters run by private charities up and down the border.”

More from John Daniel Davidson at The Federalist.

Twitter Suspends Chinese Dissidents
All that talk about social media fueling rebellion in authoritarian regimes is looking like hot air. Twitter suspended thousands of Chinese regime-critical accounts just before the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre – here’s the kicker – in Western countries

“Twitter later explained that the suspension was part of their routine effort to shut down “spam, inauthentic behavior and ban evasion.” Twitter admits “sometimes our routine actions catch false positives or we make errors. We apologize.” It insists the inclusion of China critics’ accounts was not demanded by Chinese authorities. Yet many Chinese dissidents and China watchers don’t buy it…

The only way to stop China from regulating our free speech on our own soil is that all of us, especially our politicians at all levels, need to take such threats seriously, stand up for businesses and individuals who are targeted, and respond to each incident forcefully by adhering to values we cherish.”

REAL CLEAR POLITICS

06/06/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Fisher Investments: Health Care Hurdles; Mueller’s Targets; Ultimate Sacrifice By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 06, 2019 08:05 am
Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 6, 2019. Seventy-five years ago today, Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 29th Division reached Normandy’s coast. They were part of a huge Allied force landing on a shoreline that stretched for 50 miles. Military planners had designated five landing sectors, starting with Sword Beach on the east, which British troops were assigned, all the way west to Utah Beach, assigned to the Americans. In-between were Juno Beach (Canadians), Gold Beach (British) and Omaha Beach. Assigned to the Americans, Omaha was where the fiercest fighting would take place. It’s where Company A, composed mostly of National Guardsmen from central Virginia and New York, were headed.   Nearly three dozen of those Virginians came from the same small tight-knit Blue Ridge farming community of Bedford. Among the troops who fought at Normandy on June 6, 1944 were 33 sets of brothers, including three from Bedford and its surrounding farms: 24-year-old Sgt. Henry Clyde Powers and his younger brother, Jack G. Powers; 24-year-old twins Roy and Ray Stevens (and their brother-in-law Grant Yopp), and the two Hoback boys, Raymond and his brother Bedford, who had the same name as the town. Also in action, numerous cousins and uncles and nephews. By the end of “The Longest Day,” all of their families — and nearly everyone else in Bedford — would have cause to grieve. I’ll have a more on the D-Day tribulations of the Bedford Boys in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Poll: Health Care Remains Burdensome for Families. RealClearScience editor Ross Pomeroy reports on the new finding. How Catholic Teaching Forced an Irish Decline in Vaudeville. Robert Cherry explains in RealClearReligion. * * * The men from Bedford hadn’t originally expected to see combat. As historian Alex Kershaw wrote in his superb book on the Virginians, the local National Guard outfit they’d joined in the late 1930s was more akin to a social club than an actual Army unit. “We were one big family,” Roy Stevens told Kershaw decades later. “We’d dated each other’s sisters, gone to the same schools, played baseball together, sometimes using a golf ball we wrapped up. And we were so young!” Although only five years older than the Stevens twins, Company A commander Taylor Fellers had a pretty good grasp of the hellish ordeal his men would face on D-Day. Before leaving England, 29-year-old Capt. Fellers had been briefed on the invasion plans and realized the acute dangers of Omaha Beach. He and his men were going in first. Fellers confided his fears to a 28-year-old fellow soldier from Bedford, his cousin Lt. Ray Nance. After Fellers spoke, the two men gazed silently out to sea. “We stood there awhile,” Nance remembered. “We didn’t say a word, not a single word to each other. I guess we’d said it all.” Aboard the troopship Empire Javelin, the Stevens twins had an even more unsettling farewell. They were usually inseparable and planned to remain so the rest of their lives. They’d even bought a farm together back home. But on D-Day they’d been assigned to different landing craft. As Roy headed for his boat, he spotted Ray waiting his turn. Ray, who had strong foreboding he wouldn’t survive the invasion, struck out his hand out for his brother to shake. Roy, who was confident he’d survive the war, found the gesture overly melodramatic — and refused his brother’s hand. “We’re going to get through this all right,” he said. “I’ll shake your hand at the [planned rendezvous point] in Vierville.” Each brother’s premonition proved correct. Roy’s landing craft struck an underwater object, sinking it and sending several men into the sea. Six of them drowned. Although he couldn’t swim, Roy managed to stay alive with the help of his floatation vest and assistance from Clyde Powers, a former lifeguard back home. They were in the water for an hour when a retreating boat picked them up and returned them to the mother ship. Clyde and Roy finally made it ashore four days later, only to find that their brothers had already been buried. The first Bedford Boys on the beach had little chance. Hampered by cloud cover, the aerial bombers had dropped their ordnance too far inland. Many of the Sherman tanks that had been ferried across the channel and were supposed to provide cover at Omaha Beach were offloaded too far from shore and sank — with their crews trapped inside. German gunners killed Ray Stevens, and Fellers, too. Both Hoback boys were cut down minutes after they waded ashore. So was Grant Yopp, who’d turned 21 a week before. Grant was married to a sister of the Stevens twins, but he was like a third brother to them: He’d lived with the Stevens family since he was 13 when his own father abandoned the Yopp family. Bedford’s best all-around athlete, movie-star handsome Frank Draper Jr., was mortally wounded in his boat. Elmere Wright, whose promising career as a pitcher in the St. Louis Browns farm system had been interrupted by the war, was killed by the same German artillery shell that ended Bedford Hoback’s life. When another Bedford boy, Pvt. James Padley, was thrown into the sea, he was compromised by the radio strapped to his back and sunk beneath the waves. Padley’s body was never found. Nor was Raymond Hoback’s, although a G.I. found his Bible in the water and mailed it to his mother. She cherished it all her life. Of the 34 men from Bedford who crossed the English Channel the night of June 5, 1944, 19 died on Omaha Beach, most of them within the first 15 minutes of battle. Four others died later in the invasion. These men who died on the Normandy shore — or trying to reach it — were among the 4,413 Allied military men killed on D-Day, 2,500 of them Americans. It wasn’t only Bedford that suffered, even in central Virginia: Eight men in the 116th Regiment from Lynchburg didn’t survive D-Day. Seven from Roanoke never came home. But as Alex Kershaw pointed out, no community in Virginia or anywhere else in America — or, for that matter, in any Allied nation — lost as many of its sons as Bedford. Taylor Fellers’ fears had come true. “In a matter of minutes,” Alex Kershaw wrote, “a couple of German machine gunners had broken the town’s heart.”  Carl M. Cannon

MEET THE PRESS

Image

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

FIRST READ: Democratic rivals pile on Biden

We told you it’s never easy being the frontrunner.

Now less than three weeks before the first Democratic presidential debates, Joe Biden is taking flak from all directions.

It’s coming from the rest of the Democratic field for his continued support of the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funds for abortion services except in the cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.

  • “I think the Hyde Amendment is wrong,” Cory Booker told NBC’s Leigh Ann Caldwell.
  • “No matter your income or where you live, every woman should have access to health care including abortion,” Beto O’Rourke tweeted.
  • “No woman’s access to reproductive health care should be based on how much money she has. We must repeal the Hyde Amendment,” Kamala Harris added.

And it’s coming from the political class over the Biden campaign sloppily rolling out a climate plan – and admitting it forgot to give proper attribution.

Image

Here’s the thing: In the grand scheme of the 2020 campaign, these transgressions by Biden are pretty minor.

Plenty of campaigns have taken material – without attribution – to put on their websites and policy proposals.

And plenty of Biden’s rivals, including Warren, Booker, O’Rourke and Harris, have VOTED for legislation that contains the Hyde Amendment, as Politico notes.

Yet no matter the size of the transgressions, this Democratic pile-on is a recognition that the entire Dem field is itching for a fight with Biden.

So being on that debate stage with Biden matters.

The nine Dems who – by luck of the draw – get to share the debate stage with Biden will have an opportunity the other 10 contenders won’t get.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 58 percent

58 percent.

That’s the share of Americans who OPPOSE changing the current federal government policy that prohibits Medicaid funds from being used to pay for abortions, per a POLITICO-Harvard poll in October 2016.

That puts the majority of the electorate in agreement with Joe Biden, who has taken heat since yesterday for his continued support of the Hyde Amendment.

The reason for that pressure?

His stance is also the minority position in his OWN party, with 55 percent of Democrats in the same survey saying that the current policy of disallowing Medicaid funds for abortion should be overturned.

Just 37 percent of Democrats say the status quo should stay in place.

Pelosi: No on impeachment, yes on prison

Politico has House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying this in a closed-door meeting with fellow Democrats pushing for impeachment:

“I don’t want to see [Trump] impeached, I want to see him in prison,” she said, according to multiple Dem sources familiar with the meeting.

NBC News hasn’t confirmed Pelosi said these words.

More: Ashley Etienne, a Pelosi spokeswoman, said Speaker Pelosi and the chairmen “had a productive meeting about the state of play with the Mueller report. They agreed to keep all options on the table and continue to move forward with an aggressive hearing and legislative strategy.”

Two points here…

One, if you believe the Trump has committed crimes, you have to sell that message to an American public OUTSIDE the Dem base.

And two, if your play is to let the 2020 presidential election decide Trump’s fate, you have to realize that there’s a solid chance (50-50? 40-60? 60-40?) that he wins re-election.

Remember, a presidential incumbent gets to focus on the general election for four years. The ultimate Dem challenger will get three to four months.

Deal or no deal?

NBC’s Kristen Welker, Kayla Tausche and Lauren Egan have a Trump administration official doubting that the White House and Mexico will strike a deal on tariffs before Monday’s deadline – when Trump has threatened to impose a 5 percent tariff on all Mexican imports.

“According to another senior administration official, in order for a deal to be made, the White House is asking Mexico to hold Central American asylum seekers in a ‘safe third country’ designation, rather than letting them cross the US border.”

“Additionally, the White House is also asking Mexico to accept the ‘Migration Protection Protocols,’ which require migrants to remain in Mexico until their cases are processed.”

“The administration official was skeptical that a deal could be struck before the Monday deadline, noting that it was likely tariffs would go into effect.”

2020 VISION: Georgia on my mind

Today’s 2020 campaign activity is in Atlanta, where a handful of candidates will be addressing an African-American leadership summit and a DNC gala.

And NBC’s Garrett Haake and Josh Lederman report that Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke will meet privately with Stacey Abrams while in Georgia.

On the campaign trail today: Cory Booker and Pete Buttigieg address an African-American Leadership Summit in Atlanta… Also in Atlanta, Joe Biden, Beto O’Rourke and Stacey Abrams address a DNC IWILLVOTE gala… And Buttigieg hits a fundraiser in Atlanta.

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Sixty-seven percent (67%) of voters believe Amazon has been good for the United States. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey that 8% believe it has been bad for the country, 13% say it has had no impact, and 18% are not sure. The numbers are similar for Google: 60% say it’s been good for the country while 8% hold the opposite view. Facebook, however, receives more mixed reviews: 31% think it’s been good and 34% say bad.The Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice have indicated interest in regulating these companies on anti-trust grounds.* Twenty-nine percent (29%) believe new regulations would lead to worse service from Amazon. Just 16% believe it would make things better.* Twenty-six percent (26%) believe more regulation of Google would lead to worse service while 20% believe things would get better.* As for Facebook, 31% believe regulatory efforts would improve service while 17% say the opposite.Voters aren’t enthusiastic about breaking up these tech companies:* Only 18% believe breaking up Amazon would be good for the country while 44% believe it would be bad.* Eighteen percent (18%) believe breaking up Google would be good for the country; 35% believe it would be bad.* Again, Facebook stands out: 35% believe breaking it up would be good for the country while 17% take the opposite view.My weekly syndicated column notes that many Americans support tariffs on goods from China and Mexico despite believing they will hurt the economy. The reason appears to be partly that voters have other priorities in relation to those nations.Additionally, voters seem to embrace President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s belief in “bold, persistent experimentation.” In the midst of the Great Depression, FDR said “It is common sense to take a method and try it; if it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.”Americans still generally feel good about the economy. But, our weekly tracking shows that 29% now believe it is getting worse. That’s the highest negative number since the government shutdown. Thirty-two percent (32%) believe it is getting better.Thank you for your interest in our workScott     Stay Informed Up To The Minute and Share ContentDeeper CurrentsScott Rasmussen offers his personal insight, analysis, and opinion on current political races, issues, and controversy. Loneliness in America Is Caused by Our Broken Culture Jim Geraghty It’s the 75th anniversary of D-Day. There are many ways to remember; one of my first lessons about it came from a Peanuts special, What Have We Learned, Charlie Brown? It features a haunting but age-appropriate sequence that is unlike any other in any other children’s programming.
