Shanah tovah! — Good year! — to our Jewish sisters and brothers, who mark the High Holy Day of Rosh Hashanah, the new year, beginning at sundown.
- 🍖 Toques off to Axios’ David Nather, who’s smoking a brisket with “a very basic Salt Lick recipe: salt, pepper, pinch of cayenne for a very slight kick, baste once with BBQ sauce and let it go!”

Unions represent a larger percentage of U.S. workers than at any time in the past five years, as the pandemic took its biggest bite out of non-unionized jobs, Axios’ Dan Primack writes.
- Why it matters: America’s labor movement isn’t quite resurgent, but it is showing signs of life after decades of decline.
In 2020, 10.8% of all wage and salaried workers were members of unions, up 0.5% from 2019, according to government statistics.
- That’s the highest mark since 2015 (11.%).
- Men were more likely than women to be in a union (11% vs. 10.5%), and the highest age cohort was 45-64 years old.
- Black workers (11.2%) were more likely to be union members than white (10.3%), Asian (8.8%) or Hispanic (8.5%) workers.
- A huge gap remains between public sector (34.8%) and private sector (6.3%) workers.
Caveat: The actual number of union members fell in 2020 by over 321,000, but the decline in nonunion jobs was much steeper.
What’s next: The big question is whether labor unions can successfully adjust to the changing face of American work, which is becoming much more about service work than manufacturing.
Today’s backstory: Labor Day celebrates all American workers. But it was the outgrowth of organized labor marches in the late 1800s that effectively doubled as one-day strikes. It became a federal holiday 12 years after the first march, which took place in New York City.

This satellite image shows planes waiting Friday near the main terminal of Mazar-e-Sharif airport, in northern Afghanistan.
For days, the Taliban has been preventing the departure of at least four planes chartered to evacuate several hundred people seeking to escape, AP’s Kathy Gannon writes from Kabul.
- An Afghan official at the Mazar-e-Sharif airport said the would-be passengers are Afghans — many of whom don’t have passports or visas, and thus were unable to leave the country. He said they had left the airport while the situation was sorted out.
⚡ The latest: The Taliban today claimed victory over opposition forces in Panjshir, the last holdout province.
- The Taliban declared it has completed the takeover of Afghanistan, and will announce a new government soon. (Reuters)
Updater, a digital moving company, looked at a random sample of 1.5 million moves to spot which cities had the most net inbound moves, indexed by city size, Brianna Crane writes for Axios Tampa Bay.
More than 60% of New Orleans remained without power yesterday.
- Above, Joyce and Dave Thomas offer spicy jambalaya along the Carrollton streetcar tracks in New Orleans.
Why it matters: Chefs and amateur cooks alike are piling plates high with comfort food. Residents with generators are charging their neighbors’ cellphones, and revving up chainsaws to clear downed trees, AP’s Kevin McGill reports.
- Volunteers at a local church handed out bags of cleaning supplies and boxes of diapers.

⚾ Cal Ripken Jr., baseball’s Iron Man, tells David about “The Streak” — 2,632 consecutive games over 17 years, spanning a record 8,243+ consecutive innings played:
The special part about the Streak was that everybody has their own idea of what their own streak is in their lives. … [P]eople would share their streaks with me: “Haven’t missed a day of work.” “My kid hasn’t missed a day of school for twelve years.” The important thing was showing up.
💡 So, in this season of renewal, what will your streak be?

For a special archival issue on food & drink, The New Yorker editor David Remnick resurfaces the 2000 New Yorker article, “Annals of Gastronomy: Hell’s Kitchen,” that helped bring fame to the late Anthony Bourdain, then chef at Les Halles (and New Yorker freelancer):
The orders are arriving non-stop. My left hand grabs tickets, separates white ones for the grill man, yellow ones for the sauté man, and pink master copies, which I use to time and generally oversee the production. My right hand wipes plates, inserts rosemary sprigs into mashed potatoes. I’m yelling full time, trying to hold it all together. If there is an unforeseeable mishap — say, one of the big tables’ orders was prematurely sent out, only to be returned — the whole process could come to a full stop.
“Where’s that f—ing confit?” I yell at Angel, who’s struggling to make blinis for smoked salmon, to brown ravioli under the salamander, to lay out plates of pâté, and to do five endive salads, all more or less at once. A hot escargot explodes in front of me, spattering me with boiling garlic butter and snail guts.

The Morning Briefing: Team Biden Can’t Wish Away the Afghanistan Fiasco
Top O’ the Briefing
Happy Labor Day Monday, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. I’m breeding egrets just to confuse the neighbors.
While the Briefing doesn’t get these Monday holidays off, we do make things a little more pithy.
We will tidy up a couple of hot takes of mine and then we can all be off to our federal holiday indulgences. I’m still unsure about the wearing white rule. Is that still OK today and verboten tomorrow or is this toga I’m wearing already a faux pas?
It is more than obvious that our alleged president and his puppet masters would love nothing more than to have the American public get hit with some sort of collective amnesia that would make us forget the last several weeks. Heck, I wouldn’t mind not remembering Biden’s body count and the unraveling of our international reputation. Sadly, the consequences of our anti-American president’s misdeeds aren’t that easy to send down the memory hole, despite the best efforts of his handlers and the media to usher them there.
Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, hit CNN on Sunday to engage in some creative storytelling, which A.J. Kaufman wrote about. While being peppered with actual journalism type questions from Dana Bash, Klain made sure he got to the talking point all of team Biden has been repeating and not one functioning American adult cares about:
He then returned to his talking points, boasting that “we launched a historic airlift that brought 124,000 people out of Afghanistan, American citizens, legal permanent residents of this country, residents of other countries, and a lot of Afghan nationals. And we are going to get those people to safety. We’re ultimately going to resettle them.”
Nobody is buying the administration’s “historic success” story and it’s beyond pathetic that they’re still trying to sell that stinker to a public that’s worried about the Americans who are still stuck in Afghanistan.
While the president’s puppeteers are telling us everything is fine, we’re going to be getting reminders from both near and afar that there is nothing good about the mess they’ve made.
Rick wrote over the weekend:
According to a story in Politico, Veterans Administration mental health hotlines lit up with thousands of veterans who were emotionally affected by Joe Biden’s disaster.
Veterans Affairs chief of staff Tanya Bradsher sent out an email that day to her senior staff. “My veteran network is reeling and I am sure yours are as well,” Bradsher wrote. “Can we highlight in our comms channels that VA has resources available? I am thinking of the vet centers in particular but open to all resources. This is devastating to so many.”
Similar reports were pouring in from veterans centers and groups across the country. Perhaps it was the way that it ended that affected so many so deeply.
Heckuva job, Joey.
These distraught veterans apparently haven’t heard the roaring success story version that the commander in chief is sharing with everyone.
Bryan had another story about what we’re looking at in Afghanistan’s future:
Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, gave an exclusive interview to Fox News’s Jennifer Griffin. He told Griffin that he expects a “resurgence” in terrorism following the United States’ ignominious retreat from Afghanistan.
Milley went on to say that that resurgence involves a big comeback by al-Qaeda. So much for Biden’s big brag about our Afghanistan mission being a success because we got rid of them.
There is no telling how long Biden and his people will continue to camp out in their alt-reality. They do seem immune to any intrusions by the real world thus far. It’s going to keep crashing down on them even though they keep trying to fend it off with the ad nauseam repetition of a useless talking point.
And they’ll probably screw things up even worse once it does.

Happy Labor Day. Hope you get a chance to enjoy the unofficial last day of summer.
After a year of disasters, FEMA is feeling overstretched as it gets ready to add the Afghan resettlement program to its to-do list. Reproductive rights advocates are bracing themselves for what could come next in the wake of Texas’ strict anti-abortion law. And a medical miracle in Israel.
Here’s what we’re watching this Monday morning. Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say the cascade of emergencies over the last 18 months — from hurricanes and wildfires to Covid-19 — has stretched the agency thin.
Now they expect to be drawn deeper into the nationwide effort to resettle Afghan refugees, adding another complex challenge to a crushing shower of disasters that has cascaded down on the beleaguered agency in recent months.
“FEMA is stretched thin, relying on an overworked workforce,” said an agency official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “We were not designed to be America’s 911.”
Meantime, one woman in California is hoping her husband soon joins the resettlement program after his lucky escape out of Kabul saw him narrowly avoid becoming a victim off the ISIS-K suicide bombing that killed over 100.
And China is keeping a close eye on developments in Afghanistan, as Taliban rule in its backyard brings both opportunity and risk to Beijing, NBC News’ Janis Mackey Frayer reports. Monday’s Top Stories
The ripple effect from Texas’ highly restrictive anti-abortion law could include not only copy-cat legislation in other states, but also efforts to restrict contraceptive access or in-vitro fertilization choices, reproductive rights experts say. Many historically Black colleges and universities are in Southern states where cases are rising and GOP governors have resisted vaccination mandates. Communist China has relentlessly pursued economic growth for decades, creating more billionaires than the U.S. and lifting 800 million people out of poverty. But now Beijing is planning what some experts say would be a dramatic about-face: cracking down on the country’s newly minted super-rich. OPINION The problem is not that Bishop Sycamore did something so different than what other academies pretending to be “high schools” are doing. The problem is that they were so bad at the grift that they gave up the game, sports writer Will Leitch writes in an opinion piece. Also in the News

September 6, 2021 Welcome to the Monday edition of Internet Insider, where we unspool threads of online misinformation—one dumb conspiracy at a time…
ONE DUMB CONSPIRACY Scammers are posing as Mel Gibson on Telegram to hawk a ‘Trump Coin’ to QAnon believers A network of fake accounts on Telegram is posing as right-leaning Hollywood celebrities in order to promote a collectible coin to QAnon followers. The accounts, which falsely claim to belong to high-profile figures such as Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone, and Clint Eastwood, have collectively amassed more than 100,000 followers over the last six months.
The scam preys on conspiracy theorists by drawing them in with promises that secret information regarding corruption and pedophilia in Hollywood will soon be released. Yet once each Telegram channel builds a significant following, users are instead met with an increasing number of posts about a gold and silver coins featuring former President Donald Trump.
One of the most popular accounts is @MelGibsonOfficial, which has amassed over 30,000 subscribers since launching in March. The account spent its first few months sharing posts praising Trump before switching to QAnon-themed topics regarding elite child-eating pedophile rings.
“Hollywood is drenched in innocent children’s blood. The references to pedophilia and cannibalism have always been there, but for years they cryptic or symbolic,” the account wrote last month. “I was introduced to these practices in the early 2000s and was threatened with serious repercussions should I ever speak out. And, I don’t just mean my career, I mean my life was threatened, my family’s life would be in danger.”
While the average internet user might easily see through an account proclaiming to be run by one of Hollywood’s most famous actors and directors, countless subscribers appear convinced that Gibson is actually on Telegram.
“Thank you for your courage to speak out when NO ONE would Mel!” one user responded. “I look forward to your future movies that will inspire and unite humanity.”
Alan Nierob, a representative for Gibson, told the Daily Dot that the account in question was not associated with their client.
“Mr. Gibson, nor anyone associated with him, has anything to do with this account,” Nierob said.
The column continues below.

After building up a large subscriber base, the account began promoting other fake accounts that follow the exact same script.
Users were encouraged to subscribe to the “official” accounts for Stallone, Eastwood, and even deceased figures such as Michael Jackson and John F. Kennedy Jr. Unsurprisingly, Michelle Bega, a representative for Stallone, likewise confirmed that the actor was not on Telegram.
“Mr. Stallone is officially not involved with Telegram,” Bega said. “This is not his account, he does not post on the Telegram site. The account is counterfeit.”
Between late August and early September is when the accounts began hawking the “Official Trump Coin.” The posts compared the physical coin to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. “It’s true, everything said about these coins and their skyrocket to $400 is true!” the post says. “Those who will have these Trump coins will be treated differently than the others!” A link to purchase the Official Trump Coins redirects to a web shop for the website Raw Conservative Opinions. The coins are listed as “free” with users allegedly only having to pay for shipping and handling.
While the website features endless 5-star reviews of questionable validity, a profile for the company on the website for the Better Business Bureau is filled with complaints over “Made in China” labels featured on the coin’s packaging. The Daily Dot sent numerous inquiries to Raw Conservative Options to ask whether it was aware of or involved with the fake Telegram accounts but did not receive a reply. It remains unclear how many coins have been sold.
Either way, conspiracy theorists appear convinced that big name celebrities on Telegram are providing them secret intel on Hollywood. Staff Writer

Monday 09.06.21 It’s Labor Day! If you have the day off, you might be curious about what’s open and what’s closed. At the White House, there is no rest, as President Biden tackles multiple crises. Here’s what else you need to know to Get Up to Speed and On With Your Day. Health care workers prepare to turn a 45-year-old unvaccinated Covid-19 patient in Tarzana, California. Coronavirus
Some US hospitals are getting close to full capacity as Covid-19 continues to spread, and soon officials could be making choices about who gets an ICU bed, Dr. Anthony Fauci told CNN. “We are perilously close,” the director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases said. “You’re going to be in a situation where you’re going to have to make some very tough choices.” Masking is important, Fauci noted, but “vaccination is the No. 1” method of lowering hospitalizations. In the Southeast, Georgia is now seeing its highest number of hospitalizations since the start of the pandemic, matching January peaks, according to federal data. Concerns about Covid-19 are putting more emphasis on booster shots, with White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain committing to the science but not giving a specific date as to when they would be available to the public. Fauci, however, has confirmed that booster doses of Pfizer and Moderna might not come at the same time.
Afghanistan
The Taliban have claimed victory in Afghanistan’s Panjshir province, with a spokesman saying the region had been “completely conquered” after two weeks of fierce fighting with a resistance group. If the claim is true, it would mean the Taliban now control every Afghan province. However, the National Resistance Front in Afghanistan, an anti-Taliban group that has been battling the militants’ offensive in the Panjshir Valley, denied the claim, with a spokesman telling CNN: “The resistance is still all over the valley.” The claims follow a weekend of intense fighting in the Panjshir Valley, with heavy casualties reported. Meanwhile, Klain said the US will find ways to get any remaining Americans in Afghanistan out of the country if they want to leave, even after the US finished its military evacuation. But when it comes to fighting ISIS-K, with no US troops left on the ground, gathering intelligence will become infinitely more difficult, according to current and former officials.
Ida
From Louisiana to New York, communities across the eastern US are trying to piece lives back together more than a week after Hurricane Ida slammed into the Gulf Coast. In both areas of the US, roadways turned to rivers, lives were lost and structures were destroyed by strong winds and rising waters. Power restoration could take weeks more in some places, officials said, with more than 530,000 customers in Louisiana still in the dark. Climatologist Kim Cobb warned that New York, like many cities, was clearly not prepared to deal with climate-related and weather disasters such as Ida. The true extent of the storm’s impact on human lives is still being realized. In one heartbreaking account, Chasity Fatherree recounts how her father became the first of dozens of confirmed casualties in the devastating storm system.
Gun violence
A former Marine outfitted in body armor fatally shot four people, including a baby, mother and grandmother, near Lakeland, Florida, early yesterday in what the sheriff there called an “active shooter rampage.” The suspect then got into a firefight with officers before surrendering, but he later tried to take a gun from an officer at a hospital, the sheriff said. An 11-year-old girl who was shot is expected to recover. Meantime, at least 46 people, including eight children, have been shot in Chicago over the weekend, police said. A 4-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in critical condition after he was shot twice in the head Friday night inside a home, Chicago police said. Adding to the violence, three people, including a student, were shot on the campus of Towson University in Maryland early Saturday, according to Baltimore County Police. The injuries were not life threatening, the university said.
Ethiopia
Bodies floating downstream into Sudan reveal what appears to be a new phase of ethnic cleansing in Ethiopia, a CNN investigation found. Witnesses on the ground say the bodies tell a dark story of mass detentions and mass executions across the border in Humera, in Ethiopia’s Tigray region. Humera is one of many towns involved in the conflict that has ravaged the African country since the Ethiopian government launched an offensive in the northern Tigray region in November. Despite Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s quick declaration of victory, the region is still wracked by fighting, and CNN has previously reported on many atrocities including torture, extrajudicial killings and the use of rape as a weapon of war. CNN’s investigations indicate that the ethnic profiling, detention and killing of Tigrayans bears the hallmarks of genocide as defined by international law. The Ethiopian government said it was investigating the allegations.

Rolling Stone Gathers Moss Again
Posted: 05 Sep 2021 11:59 AM PDT (Steven Hayward)It was seven years ago that Rolling Stone magazine ran the 9,000-word cover story on an alleged rape at the University of Virginia that turned out to be a complete hoax. (File it next to Dan Rather’s Texas Air National Guard story.) Well, it looks like Rolling Stone has done it again. I don’t know what’s up with the controversy over the use of ivermectin, normally a drug treatment for de-worming horses, as a COVID treatment, but Rolling Stone has a long piece up claiming that an Oklahoma hospital is having to treat large numbers of ivermectin overdoses, and denying hospital beds for patients with other medical needs:
There’s only one problem with the story: It is almost certainly fake news. Rolling Stone has now appended this note to the top of the piece:
Layers and layers of fact-checkers and editors. . .

The return of Andrew Luger
Posted: 05 Sep 2021 06:08 AM PDT (Scott Johnson)On Friday afternoon the Star Tribune’s Stephen Montemayor reported that “Andrew Luger in final step of U.S. attorney nomination in Minnesota.” Luger served as United States Attorney for Minnesota from February 2014 to March 2017 under President Obama and into the early days of the Trump administration. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar did what she could to engineer Luger’s continued service under Trump. Her support wasn’t enough then under President Trump, but it is enough now under President Biden. Luger’s work as United States Attorney was highly regarded by Minnesota’s federal district judges. He has a stellar reputation. Luger saved Ilhan Omar’s nascent political career when the controversy we had ignited over her plural marriages — including her then current marriage to her brother — jeopardized it in August 2016. Luger issued a misleading letter that violated Department of Justice policy and withheld relevant facts. Omar’s 2016 state legislative campaign instantly put its public relations crisis to bed with this letter from Luger (below). 158_US Attorney August 2016 Letter (1) by Scott Johnson on Scribd
Luger’s letter was addressed to Minneapolis criminal attorney Jean Brandl, who had contacted him on behalf of Omar. Brandl, incidentally, had responded to my original August 2016 inquiry regarding Omar’s marriages. I published her response to me verbatim on Power Line and in the City Journal column “The curious case of Ilhan Omar.” Brandl procured Luger’s letter to refute the story reported by FOX9 investigative reporter Tom Lyden: “Fox 9 has learned U.S. Attorney Andy Luger has asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to look into Ilhan Omar’s marriages, because she’s in ‘a position of public trust.’” Following Luger’s letter, FOX9 deep-sixed Lyden’s story. Lyden’s story mysteriously disappeared. Ghostly traces exist in this MinnPost story and in Patrick Coolican’s Star Tribune story “U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger: Not investigating legislative candidate Ilhan Omar Luger denied a Fox 9 report of immigration investigation.” I put this point in italics for the purpose of emphasis: Based on my own reporting, I believe that Lyden had the story right. Luger’s letter was not only improper, it was false in substance. The local office of ICE had in fact opened an investigation into Omar’s immigration status that Luger essentially killed. I didn’t understand the critical impact of Luger’s letter until the state campaign finance board released its investigative file in Omar’s case in June 2019. The testimony of Carla Kjellberg made it clear that Luger’s letter saved Omar by extinguishing media interest in the story. I wrote Luger in June 2019:
Luger promptly responded: “Thanks. I will pass on this.” I had no such luck this time around. Early yesterday morning I sent Luger a draft of this post and asked him for any comment by 8:00 a.m. this morning. He has provided no comment. Former Dakota County District Judge Erica MacDonald was the United States Attorney for Minnesota in 2019. I wrote Public Affairs officer Tasha Rose Zerna to ask Ms. MacDonald about Luger’s letter:
Ms. Zerna responded:
If our United States Attorney’s Office was in the business of giving out letters like the one from Luger, I wanted one of my own. I followed up to inquire more specifically (1) whether the office sends letters such as Luger’s to Brandl as a matter of routine and (2) whether Omar wax then under investigation. I asked Ms. Zerna: Can you be any more forthcoming? She responded:
If Luger is in fact nominated to serve again in the position he held when he wrongly sent Omar a lifeline in 2016, perhaps some Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee can bestir himself or herself to press Luger on these issues.

Axe the Honor Roll!
Posted: 04 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT (John Hinderaker)I went through a stage in my life when I was a less than diligent student. It isn’t that I wasn’t working, I just wasn’t working on the things my teachers had assigned as homework. The result was that there were a couple of 9-weeks periods in junior high school when I didn’t make the honor roll. I have never personally encountered the wrath of God, but the wrath of my parents when I failed to make the honor roll was a near enough substitute to last a lifetime. So, where was
The solution? Do away with standards–i.e., “academic success”–altogether! That way, no one can achieve academic success and no one will feel bad. Or good.
That is a ridiculous assertion. Grades positively influence future student performance, especially when your parents exhibit a total lack of sympathy when they aren’t very good. But even in a less functional family, how can a student know when he or she is doing better (or worse) if there are no grades?
Who needs to know how to do trigonometry if you can just substitute “demonstrations of social justice and integrity?” Where were these people when I was trying to figure out what the cosine of an angle was? Social justice is so much easier. Especially these days, when your teacher probably can’t do trigonometry either but is hell on wheels when it comes to left-wing cliches.
I think that is right. The war on standards mostly comes down to the fact that so many teachers and educational bureaucrats cannot themselves meet any meaningful standard, let alone teach our children how to do so.

99.) MARK LEVIN
September 3, 2021
On Friday’s Mark Levin Show, Gen. George S. Patton was an inspirational General in the American military and the movie “Patton” reenacts one of the most passionate speeches from the legendary general. This inspiration is the kind of message America needs to hear, not President Biden’s speeches that separate Americans by race. America can not embrace Biden’s trajectory of surrender, abandonment, and empowering our enemies like Iran, China, and others. Then, the media is running to the ramparts to announce the reversal of Roe. V Wade when that in fact has not happened. The White House cites biological differences but usually embraces the idea that there are no biological differences between men and birthing people. They will use any physical characteristics like race, gender, and religion to split people into groups. Later, the politicians and the media continue to disgustingly use deaths from a natural disaster to advance their climate change agenda. According to current reports, people have only tapped into a very small portion of the earth’s resources and that includes the industrial revolution. But for the liberty and mobility of We The People standing in the way, the American Marxists would have their way on every single one of their radical issues. Afterward, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lacks experience in any particular policy area, but the Democrats made her the expert on attacking capitalism in the name of climate change. She alleges that the fossil fuel industry is incompatible with humanity. Yet, it is the fossil fuel industry that is responsible for food reaching Americans all over this country. AOC’s statement is not just flawed, it is stupid. Even the scientists agree that climate–catastrophe-mongering is one of the biggest frauds in science today.
