THE DAILY SIGNAL

Jun 11, 2019
Good morning from Washington, where House Democrats are nostalgic for the Watergate scandal as they try to wring impeachment from the Mueller report. Fred Lucas offers a few exhibits. We’ve also got Ana Quintana’s analysis of Trump’s concessions from Mexico, and Mike Gonzalez’s thoughts on disturbing arrests in Hong Kong. Plus: Hans von Spakovsky on illegal immigrants and crime, Ingrid Skop on abortion “safety,” Jarrett Stepman on bagging plastic, and Cal Thomas on praying for the president.
News 4 Big Moments in the House’s Mueller Report Hearing John Dean, who served as White House counsel for Nixon, draws parallels between the Watergate scandal that led to his conviction and toppled his former boss and Mueller’s probe of alleged Russian government ties to the Trump campaign. More Analysis Trump’s Negotiations With Mexico Delivered a Big Win “We got everything we wanted and we’re going to be a great partner to Mexico now because now they respect us,” says President Trump. More Commentary How Open Borders and Sanctuary Policies Victimize (and Kill) Americans A teenage girl was killed in cold blood fewer than 15 miles from the Capitol, and still Congress is incapable of working with the White House to combat this scourge of lawlessness. More Analysis China’s Power Grab in Hong Kong “A trial in Hong Kong is a legitimate thing. It’s not like a kangaroo court as it is in China. So nobody wants to be tried in a Chinese court in mainland China,” says Heritage Foundation expert Mike Gonzalez. More Commentary I’m an OB-GYN. Here’s My Take on Whether Abortion Is ‘Safer Than Childbirth.’ The studies supposedly documenting a low risk of death from induced abortion are based on very poor data. For starters, they rely on voluntary reporting—a notoriously weak methodology. “Let parents bequeath to their children not riches, but the spirit of reverence.”

PLATO Good morning!

President Donald Trump on Monday condemned the House Judiciary Committee for having John Dean—former White House counsel to Richard Nixon and a political contributor to CNN—to testify.

“Can’t believe they are bringing in John Dean, the disgraced Nixon White House Counsel who is a paid CNN contributor,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Dean, who had previously been sentenced to four months in prison for obstructing justice connected to the Watergate scandal, spoke about the Mueller report.

The master dealmaker strikes again—despite relentless abuse from his critics, President Trump has successfully used the promise of tariffs to persuade Mexico to help us combat illegal immigration.   See More Opinions Government Welfare: A Cancer Known as Communism
By Trevor Loudon

Government welfare is communism. Free money from the state, whether in terms of benefits, handouts, or non-universal tax-breaks, is a trap that will draw people into socialism and beyond. It’s a lot like cancer. Stage one of societal cancer is “welfarism.” Citizens get a few benefits for the elderly, the very young, those who can’t look after themselves, maybe some student loans. The economy remains pretty healthy. The symptoms are mild and noticed by very few. Tuesday, June 11, 2019 Crisis in California Last week, it was reported that “Los Angeles County’s homeless population has swelled by 12% during the past year as a shortage of affordable housing deepens in and around America’s second-largest city… the 12 percent homelessness rise in Los Angeles County was modest compared with corresponding increases in less populous neighboring counties – up 28 percent in Ventura, 43 percent in Orange and 50 percent in Kern.” Reuters

Here’s a look at how the left and the right have reacted to California’s troubles in recent months. From the Left The left argues that California’s policies are not liberal enough, and for liberalizing zoning laws to allow more housing. “‘This is unregulated capitalism, unbridled capitalism, capitalism run amok. There are no guardrails,’ says Salesforce founder and chairman Marc Benioff, a fourth-generation San Franciscan who in a TV interview branded his city ‘a train wreck’… For decades, this coruscating city of hills, bordered by water on three sides, was a beloved haven for reinvention, a refuge for immigrants, bohemians, artists and outcasts. It was the great American romantic city, the Paris of the West. No longer. In a time of scarce consensus, everyone agrees that something has rotted in San Francisco.”
Karen Heller, Washington Post

“When the cost of living is taken into account, billionaire-brimming California ranks as the most poverty-stricken state, with a fifth of the population struggling to get by. Since 2010, migration out of California has surged… At every level of government, our representatives, nearly all of them Democrats, prove inadequate and unresponsive to the challenges at hand. Witness last [month]’s embarrassment, when California lawmakers used a sketchy parliamentary maneuver to knife Senate Bill 50, an ambitious effort to undo restrictive local zoning rules and increase the supply of housing…

“Where progressives argue for openness and inclusion as a cudgel against President Trump, they abandon it on Nob Hill and in Beverly Hills… Not-in-my-backyardism is a bipartisan sentiment, but because the largest American cities are populated and run by Democrats — many in states under complete Democratic control — this sort of nakedly exclusionary urban restrictionism is a particular shame of the left.”
Farhad Manjoo, New York Times

“Apartment bans are a case of rich vs. poor, longtime resident vs. newcomer, and, all too often, white vs. black, but they are something else too: generational warfare, a showdown in which older homeowners are telling younger renters that there’s no more room. Seen that way, the housing affordability crisis serves as a useful framework for understanding a handful of urgent American issues that have stalled out, particularly intraparty conflicts on the left like those over student debt and climate change… It doesn’t feel like an accident that the youngest woman ever elected to Congress has done more to advance climate change discourse in Washington in six months than Democrats have done in a decade… Young people in college, at planning meetings in Palo Alto, or protesting in Dianne Feinstein’s office, aren’t asking for anything radical—just for what their parents and grandparents already had.”
Henry Grabar, Slate

“If Democrats can ever achieve a consensus on housing policy, they can do as they wish at present, since the Donkey Party has supermajorities in both chambers in the legislature. But… suburbanites from both parties are wary of disturbing the status quo… the road to enactment of ‘upzoning’ legislation remains rocky and winding. If you’re homeless in California, or are struggling to afford a mortgage payment or rent, help is not quite yet on the way.”
Ed Kilgore, New York Magazine From the Right The right blames liberal policies for harming the quality of life of California’s residents. “The top California income-tax rate is 13.3 percent (the nation’s highest). The state’s average sales tax is (conservatively) about 8.5 percent (ninth in the nation). California’s bewildering combined array of gasoline taxes are about 55 cents per gallon and rising (second-highest in the nation). In exchange, California public-school test scores rank between 44th and 46th in the nation. Its roads and infrastructure are rated in various surveys between 42nd and 45th. Driving from the state’s interior to the coast on roads mostly unchanged from 45 years ago takes about twice the time as in the past — if carefully planned at particular times and days of the week.”
Victor Davis Hanson, National Review

The quality of life in California is in free fall thanks to liberal policies exactly like those [Democratic presidential] candidates want to impose on the entire nation… California’s energy costs are already the second-highest in the nation; the renewables mandate may scratch an environmental itch, but it will surely mean residents soon pay more for gasoline, or heating oil and electricity…

“These are policies that lead to high prices for housing and energy, a laissez-faire approach to law and order that leads to tent cities and rising crime, rising spending that demands exorbitant taxes and big government programs that mean diminished personal freedoms.”
Liz Peek, The Hill

San Francisco is the nation’s leader in property crime. Burglary, larceny, shoplifting, and vandalism are included under this ugly umbrella. The rate of car break-ins is particularly striking: in 2017 over 30,000 reports were filed, and the current average is 51 per day… the poor bear the brunt of low-level and property crimes. ‘In the Tenderloin we have vulnerable populations—people of color, the most children, the second-highest concentration of elders, and they are held hostage by drug dealers and theft, and the city tells them these crimes are not that bad,’ says [former prosecutor Nancy] Tung. ‘We are failing to protect them. The police do a good job, because the criminals are caught, only to be released back on the streets over and over.’”
Erica Sandberg, City Journal

California “has the worst ranking for homelessness, 8th worst for roads, and worst for teacher-to-student ratio. Its prisons are so crowded that the Supreme Court determined them to constitute cruel and unusual punishment, and it suffered the worst budget crisis of all the states during the Great Recession…

“Residents are so mesmerized by the amazing weather and beauty of the place that they tend to overlook the quality of the services. And as a result, management does not change. The state has been under the same Democratic Party management for years. Their monopoly on power is so safe that they now hold supermajorities in both houses of the Legislature despite California’s worsening condition. Management has no incentive to change when it keeps getting re-elected.”
Jim Breslo, Fox News On the bright side…

Political Conferences Are The Worst I hate political conferences with a passion. Seasoned politicians get on stage and espouse highly rehearsed, consultant vetted speeches aimed at connecting with the lowest common denominator in the room. These personality-driven, buzz word filled, idea void exercises amount to nothing more than an evening of your favorite cable news outlet. We were looking for something bigger. Something with purpose and meaning that could produce ideas that outlasted the days trendiest political figure. When we decided to do the first ever Resurgent Gathering, Erick’s vision was very clear. No stump speeches. Candidates were forbidden from going on stage and giving the standard ‘Democrats Suck’, ‘Vote Republican’ speeches that they could give in their sleep. We were looking for conservative ideas to answer the days biggest challenges. Immigration. National debt. Abortion. We were looking to inform, educate and empower activist who wanted to have influence in the political process. POLITICO Playbook: Trump vs. Biden in Iowa splitscreen

DRIVING THE DAY

THE JUDICIARY HEARING: A FOOD FIGHT, AND A DUD … WHAT WE LEARNED Monday is that any hearing about ROBERT MUELLER andobstruction is going to turn into a partisan war between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans tried to discredit John Dean as a money-hungry, fame-seeking crook. The top of Monday’s hearing didn’t even get aired live on cable because of the helicopter crash in New York. Unless President DONALD TRUMP begins allowing some of his associates to testify, it’s going to be tough for these hearings to break through — and many Democrats realize that. More from Kyle Cheney on the hearing

WHAT THE BASE WILL THINK … POD SAVE AMERICA’S JON FAVREAU (@jonfavs): “Impeachment hearings are the only way to ensure television coverage of Trump investigations. It’s the only way to take the microphone away from Trump. If you’re still against it, fine, but don’t expect regular hearings to command the same kind of media attention.”

… NYT COLUMNIST JAMELLE BOUIE: “Pelosi and Schumer Are Playing Too Nice”: “I think there’s a deeper divide, between a politics that sees the grass roots as an asset to use and cultivate versus one that treats it as a complication to manage. It’s a ‘leader knows best’ approach that may squander the Democratic Party’s advantage of enthusiasm and drive against a corrupt and unpopular president. …

“Then again, Pelosi and Schumer are shrewd politicians with decades of experience. Perhaps their resistance to grass-roots Democrats, and to impeachment in particular, will pay dividends. But we should consider the reverse as well: that a Democratic Party that plays with excessive caution — and keeps its base at a distance — is one that might demobilize its voters and produce the same conditions that helped Trump win in the first place.” NYT

NEW … ANDREW DESIDERIO, HEATHER CAYGLE and JOHN BRESNAHAN: “Pelosi-Nadler alliance strained by impeachment divide”

Good Tuesday morning. THE BIDEN SCENE MONDAY NIGHT, via Alexi McCammond of Axios, who pooled the event: “[Joe Biden] addressed a room full of donors and some lobbyists, including Evan Bayh and Chris Dodd, at the home of Amb. Elizabeth Bagley in Washington, D.C. He spoke at length about the importance of supporting the middle class. …

“‘One of my competitors criticized me for not going to Iowa to talk for 5 minutes. … My granddaughter was graduating. It was my daughter’s birthday. I would skip inauguration for that.’”

— THE BEFUDDLING BIDEN BIT: “‘With Trump gone you’re going to begin to see things change. Because these folks know better. They know this isn’t what they’re supposed to be doing,’ Biden said of Republicans in Congress.”

SPOTTED at Biden’s fundraiser: former Sens. John Breaux (D-La.) and Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) and former MPAA chief Dan Glickman, who previously served in Congress and Bill Clinton’s cabinet. Pic

IOWA SPLIT-SCREEN — Trump and Biden will be campaigning in the same state today for the first time in the 2020 cycle: The president will be in Council Bluffs for an official visit to an ethanol plant, followed by a Republican dinner in West Des Moines, and Biden in Ottumwa for the start of a two-day Iowa swing.

WHAT BIDEN WILL SAY TODAY IN IOWA … “You know, Donald Trump and I are both in Iowa today. It wasn’t planned that way, but I hope Trump’s presence here will be a clarifying event. America’s farmers have been crushed by his tariff war with China. No one knows that better than Iowa.

“He thinks he’s being tough. Well, it’s easy to be tough when someone else is feeling the pain. How many farmers across this state and across this nation have had to face the prospect of losing their business, of losing their farm because of Trump’s tariffs?

“How many have had to stare at the ceiling at night wondering how they’re going to make it? How many sleepless nights do you think Trump has had over what he’s doing to America’s farmers? Here’s the answer: just as many as he had when he stiffed the construction workers and electricians and plumbers who built his hotels and casinos. Zero.” More from Natasha Korecki on how Biden’s slow rollout has rankled Iowa Dems

— BTW … DOUBLING DOWN: Biden will also say that it’s “not naive” to say he will “work across the aisle” and “seek to find consensus.” “That’s not some old-fashioned way of doing things that no longer works. That’s the way our system is supposed to work.” You think Trump is going to sound the same note?

A message from PhRMA:

There are wrong and right prescriptions for changing Medicare. Seniors need Washington to focus on the right ones. Cutting costs for everyone except seniors and limiting access to lifesaving medicines are the wrong prescription for Medicare. Making changes that help seniors pay less out-of-pocket are the .

NYT’S ANNIE KARNI and MAGGIE HABERMAN: “Trump Needs a Target to Stay Interested in His Campaign. For Now, It’s Biden”: “In a recent overarching state-of-the-race briefing in Florida with Brad Parscale, his campaign manager, Mr. Trump was consistently distracted and wanted to discuss other things … Mr. Trump rarely if ever speaks to aides about what he hopes to accomplish with what would be a hard-won second term; his interest is entirely in the present, and mostly on the crisis of the moment.

“He has shown no interest in formulating a new message for his campaign, instead continuing with the winning ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan from his last race and adding that he also wants to ‘keep America great.’

“Mr. Trump has griped about traveling too much, but then lashed out at aides, demanding to know, ‘Why am I not doing more rallies?’ He insists on having final approval over the songs on his campaign playlist, as well as the campaign merchandise, but he has never asked to see a budget for 2019.” NYT

WHITE HOUSE ARRIVAL LOUNGE, via NANCY COOK: Another day, another Office of Management and Budget staffer joins the West Wing. Bradley Bishop, former press secretary at the budget agency, joined the White House communications shop this week to work on outreach to Capitol Hill.

His arrival brings the total number of former Mulvaney aides, who’ve joined the White House since January, to 11 people, and it increases the acting chief of staff’s footprint and his number of loyalists inside the communications shop. Mulvaney has long said that he wanted to bolster both the White House’s press and communications operations.

MORE FROM NANCY COOK — “Treasury’s top decision-makers: White, male and wealthy”: “When Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin postponed installing abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill, critics viewed it as further evidence of the administration’s lack of sensitivity to race, gender and history. Under the surface of that public backlash was another one brewing inside the Treasury Department: deepening tensions from the last two years over the diversity of the top staff.

“Out of roughly 20 officials who routinely attend senior staff meetings led by Mnuchin, only three are women and one is a person of color. In fiscal year 2018, the hiring of minorities at Treasury fell to its lowest pace in five years, according to the department’s own statistics, while the number of women and minorities leaving the agency outpaced their hiring.

“Treasury has fewer policy disagreements these days, said one former official, because the top decision-makers are overwhelmingly white, male and wealthy. That can make the debates less robust and also gives the department the feeling of ‘being disconnected from reality,’ said one administration official.” POLITICO

NEWS: “Justin Amash quits House Freedom Caucus,” by Melanie Zanona

SARAH FERRIS, HEATHER CAYGLE and LAURA BARRÓN-LÓPEZ: “Dems to yank bill to raise congressional pay after backlash”: “Top Democrats agreed in a closed-door meeting Monday night to pull a key section of this week’s massive funding bill to avoid escalating a clash within their caucus over whether to hike salaries for lawmakers and staff for the first time in a decade, multiple lawmakers confirmed.

“At least 15 Democrats — mostly freshmen in competitive districts — had pushed to freeze pay after some Democratic and Republican leaders quietly agreed to the slight pay increase earlier this month. …

“Democrats in Monday’s leadership meeting first blamed Republicans for the blow up, complaining that [House Minority Leader Kevin] McCarthy and the GOP campaign arm were trying to capitalize on the issue to score political points after previously agreeing not to do so. But then Hoyer said not only would McCarthy and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise support the increase but the NRCC executive director was also on board, according to sources familiar.” POLITICO

— THIS EFFORT TO GET A PAY RAISE COULD BE one of the most ham-handed episodes in the last few months. The NRCC attacked Democrats for seeking it, even though KEVIN MCCARTHY and STEVE SCALISE — who both live off their congressional salaries — also supported the bump. Meanwhile, Democratic proponents of the increase were unable to build a coalition to raise lawmaker pay or explain internally why they believed it was necessary.

TARIFF TICK TOCK — “How Mexico talked Trump out of tariff threat with immigration crackdown pact,” by WaPo’s Nick Miroff, Kevin Sieff and John Wagner: “Mexican negotiators convinced President Trump to back down from his tariff threat by agreeing to an unprecedented crackdown on Central American migrants and accepting more-expansive measures in Mexico if the initial efforts don’t deliver quick results, according to officials from both governments and documents reviewed by The Washington Post.

“The enforcement measures Mexico has promised include the deployment of a militarized national guard at the Guatemalan border, thousands of additional migrant arrests per week and the acceptance of bus loads of asylum seekers turned away from the U.S. border daily, all geared toward cutting the migrant flow dramatically in coming weeks. The measures, described by officials from both sides and included in Mexican negotiating documents reviewed by The Post, appear to be more substantial than what the Mexican government has attempted thus far during the precipitous rise in migration to the U.S. border.” WaPo

MORE 2020 WATCH — HAPPENING TODAY: South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, in a bid to capitalize on his service as a Navy reserve intelligence officer, gives a speech on foreign policy at Indiana University at 11 a.m. Eastern. He’ll be introduced by former Rep. Lee Hamilton, who chaired the 9/11 commission. More from Elena Schneider

— CNBC’S BRIAN SCHWARTZ: “Hollywood political financier Nicole Avant signs on to back Buttigieg for president”

AP … “Feisty Virginia primaries closely watched for national trend”: “Normally sleepy affairs, this year’s [state legislative] primary contests feature plenty of drama as moderates in both parties take fire from their outer flanks. All 140 legislative seats are up for grabs this year and Virginia is the only state whose legislature has a reasonable chance of flipping partisan control. Republicans currently have narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.”

TRUMP’S TUESDAY — The president will leave the White House at 12:15 p.m. en route to Council Bluffs, Iowa. He will tour the Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy facility at 2:45 p.m. Central. Trump will give a speech on renewable energy at 3:20 p.m. He will then leave for Des Moines, where the president will give a speech at 6:30 p.m. at the Republican Party of Iowa annual dinner. Afterward, he will return to Washington.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION — “Homeland Security watchdog retires early after his office was forced to retract ‘feel-good’ audits of disaster response,” by WaPo’s Lisa Rein and Kimberly Kindy: “[John V.] Kelly’s announcement follows The Post’s report last week that an internal review found that Kelly overrode auditors who had found problems with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s response to various disasters.

“When teams of auditors flew to local communities to assess how well FEMA was helping residents recover, Kelly — then in charge of the emergency management auditing staff — directed them to ignore most problems, according to the internal review and interviews. Instead, he told them to produce what the staff dubbed ‘feel-good reports.’” WaPo

SCOOP — WASHINGTON INC.: “Chamber of Commerce ends contract with consultant after WSJ investigation,” by Daniel Lippman: “The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reviewed cell phone records and ended a contract with a top consultant after the Wall Street Journal detailed the pricey perks enjoyed by chief executive Tom Donohue and reported that the business lobby group had lost influence in recent years, according to four people familiar with the matter.

“In mid-May, the Chamber ended its contract with Tom Collamore, who was the Chamber’s longtime communications chief and more recently a consultant with an office in the organization’s building near the White House … The lobby group canceled Collamore’s contract after checking his cell phone records and determining that he had spoken to a Wall Street Journal reporter …

“‘I’m not interested in commenting on this story, but any characterization suggesting I would share confidential information is patently false,’ Collamore said in a written statement. … One Chamber official spoke to Donohue recently and told POLITICO that Donohue told the official he did not think Collamore was the source of the calendar leak.” POLITICO

TA-NEHISI COATES on his conversation about reparations with Sen. Elizabeth Warren: “[A]fter ‘The Case for Reparations’ came out, she just asked me to come and talk one on one with her about it. … It was well before she declared anything about running for president. … She had read it. She was deeply serious, and she had questions. And it wasn’t, like, Will you do X, Y, and Z for me? It wasn’t, like, I’m trying to demonstrate I’m serious. I have not heard from her since, either, by the way.” New Yorker

A KUMBAYA MOMENT — “Trump made get-well call to Jerry Nadler in hospital,” by Yahoo’s Alexander Nazaryan: “Putting aside his sharp political differences with one of his primary congressional tormentors, President Trump made a surprising get-well call to Rep. Jerry Nadler, who was briefly hospitalized in Manhattan in May, Yahoo News has learned. … Trump called Nadler from Air Force One as he was on his way to Japan. …

“Trump … told Nadler that he had seen him on television, and that he thought Nadler was ‘tough.’ Trump repeated that assessment several times, adding that he wished the congressman well and wanted to know if he could do anything more. The two men did not discuss politics or impeachment, according to a person familiar with the call.” Yahoo

MEDIAWATCH — “Iran Bars Times Correspondent From Reporting,” by NYT’s Rick Gladstone: “The authorities in Iran have barred the Tehran-based correspondent for The New York Times from working for the past four months, the newspaper said Monday.

“The correspondent, Thomas Erdbrink, a Netherlands citizen, has reported for The Times from Iran since 2012. He resides in Tehran but has been unable to work since late February, when his press credential was revoked.

“The Times decided to make the issue public after recent speculation and comments on social media. Mr. Erdbrink’s absence from the news report has become increasingly conspicuous because of escalating tensions between the Iranian authorities and the United States.”

A message from PhRMA:

There are wrong and right prescriptions for changing Medicare. Seniors need Washington to focus on the right ones. There’s a lot of talk in Washington about changing Medicare to reduce costs. But while many proposals would cut costs for governments and insurers, they won’t cut costs for seniors; and even worse, they would limit access to the medicines that could save their lives – now and in the future. Cutting costs for everyone except seniors and limiting access to medicines are the wrong prescription for Medicare. On the other hand, making changes that help seniors pay less out-of-pocket are the .

Rep. Amash Leaving the House Freedom Caucus Following Trump Impeachment Row
Following a series of Twitter posts accusing the President of impeachable offenses, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) is leaving the House Freedom Caucus, a group celebrated for wielding a strong conservative influence in the House. Amash had been the first Republican in the House to call for impeachment. From Fox News:

“Amash, speaking at a Freedom Caucus board meeting, insisted his departure was voluntary. Amash said he did not want to continue to be a “further distraction” for the caucus, which is chaired by North Carolina GOP Rep. Mark Meadows.

Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, a member of the Freedom Caucus, told Fox News’ “Ingraham Angle” Monday evening that Meadows and Amash mutually came to the decision after several conversations.

Jordan said the Republican members of the group still consider Amash a friend, but that their disagreements were “sharp” and significant.”

Masterpiece Cakeshop Targeted Again
Jack Phillips, owner of the Colorado cakeshop that had been the subject of two past discrimination claims, is now being sued a third time for refusing to make a cake for an “unspecified” event. While the second complaint was tossed out, the third was just filed last week. From The Daily Wire:

“The latest lawsuit was filed Wednesday in Denver District Court on behalf of Autumn Scardina by attorneys Paula Greisen and John McHugh,” the outlet reports.

Scardina is the same woman who filed the previous lawsuit alleging discrimination after Masterpiece Cakeshop denied her request — made the day Phillips won his case — for a cake celebrating her gender transition. Reports on this newest lawsuit are vague on the theme of the pastry in question — they have said, so far, only that Scardina requested a “birthday cake” — but previous filings indicate that Scardina has gone out of her way on several occasions to request cakes Masterpiece Cakeshop clearly will not make.

Newsweek reports that the baked goods at the center of Scardina’s previous complaints to Colorado authorities included a “cake to celebrate Satan’s birthday,” with “cheesecake frosting” that would feature “a large figure of Satan, licking a 9” black Dildo…an actual working model, that can be turned on before we unveil the cake.”

Phillips said then that he believes Scardina regularly requests objectionable cakes from his bakery, including cakes with pentagrams and upside-down crosses.”

As David Harsanyi of The Federalist notes, though the Supreme Court may not be able to thwart the cultural decline that is evidenced by such attacks on individual liberty, they can mitigate the occurrence of such attacks, insofar as they are state sponsored.  From Harsanyi

“Then again, the campaign to destroy Phillips’s business was never merely about punishing a single man for refusing to submit to prevailing leftist orthodoxy. It was also a warning to all would-be apostates that thought crimes could lead to fiscal ruin, public denunciation, and endless harassment. In that sense, the prosecution has probably already paid off.

Courts won’t put to rest the cultural debate over social issues. But it’s worth noting that it wasn’t howling protesters but the state-empowered Colorado Civil Rights Commission that attempted to destroy Phillips’s business when he refused to design a specialty cake for David Mullins and Charlie Craig’s gay wedding ceremony in 2012—before gay marriage was even legalized in Colorado or recognized by federal courts.

Even today, after getting it wrong for so long, mainstream news outlets like to report that Phillips refused “to bake a wedding cake” or denied a gay couple “service.” Phillips, however, didn’t query his customers about their sexual preferences or their preferred pronouns, nor did he bar anyone from purchasing any products made in his shop, a place of public accommodation. No, Colorado had attempted to compel a citizen to say something he didn’t believe.”

AOC to Primary Schumer or Gillibrand?
According to a latest report in Axios, there is an expectation amongst top Democrats that AOC will eventually primary Chuck Schumer (D-NY) or Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) for his or her seat in the Senate. Recent polls have indicated that she enjoys growing popularity from young to middle-aged women. Emily Zanotti from The Daily Wire outlines whom AOC may target between the two NY Senators and what type of challenges she may face by running in a statewide race:

Schumer seems the more likely target, according to Axios’s sources, particularly given that he often falls on the “wrong” side of the battle between progressives and moderates. She’s also dealt more closely with Schumer, helping to dictate how the Senate handles policy initiated in the House by progressive legislators, including her own “Green New Deal,” which came up for a vote in the Senate and lost handily (even though AOC and her co-authors were adamant that a solution be enacted quickly)…

There are drawbacks. Even if Ocasio-Cortez is planning to move on to bigger and better things, she’ll need a base of support she currently lacks. National popularity is one thing, but a Senate run will require the attention of every voter in New York State, and Ocasio-Cortez is only popular with voters in and around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx. Those might be key constituencies for a Senate run, but they by no means guarantee a victory for a first timer.

And as far as Ocasio-Cortez is concerned, they are also by no means hers to fall back on. She’s popular in her home district but not particularly effective, and has yet to open a constituent office from Bronx residents, preferring to focus her attention less on local needs and more on building a national progressive movement.

Beauty Recommendations That I Love: Sunscreen Edition
As some of you may or may not know, I have moved to Tel Aviv for work for the summer. As a result, I have spent a few days roasting on Israeli beaches, bringing about five different brands of sunscreen to the beach with me.  I’ve picked my top face sunscreens, based on their efficacy AND their nongreasy, but STILL spreadable formula (yes, this is a magical balance and any woman who has attempted to smear what amounts to concrete all over her face can attest to this balance).  La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-in Sunscreen Milk SPF 60, Amazon, $35 This is your basic face sunscreen, except far lighter than the usual concrete fair we’ve been subjected to in ordinary sunscreen. Had trouble finding any issue with this particular sunscreen.  Neutrogena Hydro Boost City Shield Water Gel SPF 25, Amazon, $19.97 This one is my favorite and feels the least like a sunscreen. The gel goes on cool and actually feels refreshing (imagine that, for a sunscreen). MDSolarSciences Mineral Tinted Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $30.40 This sunscreen felt the most like a light foundation, both in consistency and in coloration. I am not usually wild over tinted sunscreens, but this one was pleasant and not overly greasy. BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist.

MEET THE PRESS

Image

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

FIRST READ: General election preview? Trump, Biden battle for the spotlight in Iowa

Just when Joe Biden was looking more and more vulnerable, President Trump and his team are elevating him.

First by this New York Times story highlighting how Biden has gotten into Trump’s head, and how the president trails Biden in their internal polling – which is reflected in the public polling, too.

Second by Trump’s travel to Iowa Tuesday on the same day that Biden will be there, giving both men a split-screen day.

All more than 200 days before next year’s Iowa caucuses.

“You know, Donald Trump and I are both in Iowa today. It wasn’t planned that way, but I hope Trump’s presence here will be a clarifying event,” Biden is expected to say in Davenport at 7:00 pm ET, according to advanced remarks his campaign released this morning, per NBC’s Garrett Haake.

Also from Biden: “America’s farmers have been crushed by his tariff war with China. No one knows that better than Iowa.”

And: “How many sleepless nights do you think Trump has had over what he’s doing to America’s farmers? Here’s the answer: Just as many as he had when he stiffed the construction workers and electricians and plumbers who built his hotels and casinos. Zero.”

Trump, meanwhile, delivers remarks on renewable energy from Council Bluffs at 4:20 pm ET, and then speaks at the Iowa GOP’s annual dinner in West Des Moines at 7:30 pm ET.

If you’re Biden, this split-screen day in Iowa is an absolute gift.

It makes it seem like the general election is already here.

And it diminishes the rest of the Dem field.

But the challenge for Biden: When you’re provided this kind of gift, you have to deliver.

Iowa’s watching.

TWEET OF THE DAY: So you’re telling me there’s a chance

What Iowa Democrats want, Part 2

On Monday, we got more non-horserace numbers from that Des Moines Register/CNN poll of Iowa Dem caucus-goers.

The percentage of in-person likely caucus-goers saying these policy positions are MUST-HAVES:

  • A woman’s right to an abortion: 79 percent
  • Recognition that climate change is the greatest threat to humanity: 75 percent
  • Restoring the ban on assault-style weapons: 57 percent
  • Medicare for All – shifting to an entirely government-run health system: 49 percent
  • Broadly expanding student debt forgiveness: 42 percent
  • The Green New Deal: 32 percent
  • Free tuition at four-year colleges: 23 percent
  • Restoring voting rights to all felons, regardless of whether they’ve completed their sentence: 23 percent
  • Breaking up big tech companies: 21 percent.

And on whether these candidate qualities are an ADVANTAGE:

  • Having years of experience in Washington: 52 percent
  • Coming from a place that mostly elects Democrat: 28 percent
  • Being white: 25 percent
  • Being a woman: 23 percent
  • Being gay: 4 percent
  • Being over the age of 70: 1 percent.

Justice Department will hand over Mueller evidence to House Dems

One explanation why Democrats are conflicted/divided/triggered over the impeachment question is that their oversight of Trump – now that they’re in the House majority – has yet to produce any real results.

In fact, the last several weeks have been dominated by defied subpoenas, witness no-shows and a refusal to hand over Trump’s tax returns.

But yesterday, House Democrats DID appear to get something they’re after.

“House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., announced Monday that he had reached an agreement with the Department of Justice over obtaining underlying evidence from the Mueller report related to possible obstruction of justice by President Donald Trump,” NBC’s Rebecca Shabad writes.

“Nadler announced the deal in a statement, saying that the DOJ ‘has agreed to begin complying with our committee’s subpoena by opening Robert Mueller’s most important files to us.’”

“The announcement came just hours before the committee holds the first in a series of hearings on the Mueller report and a day before the House is set to vote on a civil contempt resolution seeking to enforce committee subpoenas.”

“Nadler said in his statement that the House would hold off on the ‘criminal contempt process’ for now.”

2020 VISION: Pete’s big speech

Pete Buttigieg today gives what his campaign bills as a major foreign policy/national security speech at Indiana University in Bloomington, per NBC’s Josh Lederman.

Buttigieg’s argument is rooted in the notion that for too long, Democrats have ceded national security to Republicans, Lederman says.

The candidate wants to wind down U.S. wars, including pulling troops from Afghanistan, and elevate “climate disruption” as a national security issue rather than domestic policy.

What’s Buttigieg’s goal? To shine a spotlight on his service as an Afghanistan War veteran and intelligence officer, offering a contrast with Trump.

Buttigieg has accused the president of faking a disability to dodge the Vietnam War draft. Lederman also expects Buttigieg to blame Trump for increasing tensions with Iran and flubbing the increasing threat posed by China.

On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden stumps in Iowa, hitting Ottumwa, Mount Pleasant and Davenport… Steve Bullock also remains in the Hawkeye State… Pete Buttigieg delivers a foreign-policy/national-security speech in Bloomington, Ind… And Tim Ryan does Politics & Eggs in Manchester, N.H.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 62 percent.

62 percent.

That’s the share of Americans who say that they have become more supportive of transgender rights than they were five years ago, according to a new survey from PRRI.

Just a quarter — 25 percent — say they’ve become more opposed.

The survey also found that 55 percent of Americans say that there are only two genders, while 40 percent say there are a range of possible gender identities.

Among Republicans, almost three quarters — 73 percent — say gender is strictly binary, while 52 percent of Democrats say gender is more fluid.

THE LID: Nothin’ but a number?

Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we looked inside the numbers at that new Iowa poll from over the weekend — including what Iowa Democrats say about candidates’ ages.

ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss

Mike Pence is defending the Trump administration’s decision to bar pride flags at U.S. embassies.

Was John Dean’s testimony on the Hill a bust for Democrats?

The Washington Post reports on the migrant crackdown that Mexican negotiators promised to get him to back down from the tariff threat.

Justin Amash is leaving the House Freedom Caucus.

Lawmakers in New York are pushing a new effort to decriminalize sex work.

And Bernie Sanders tells NBC Nightly News that his one big idea is Medicare for All.

06/11/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Double Voting; Hostage Freed; Lessons of Troy By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 11, 2019 08:32 am
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Today’s date is a testament to the idea that even a great cultural, economic, and military power such as the United States can be brought down by hubris — or stealth. It’s an ancient theme, literally. On June 11, 1184 B.C., according to the calculations of Greek mathematician and astronomer Eratosthenes, Troy was sacked and burned. I’ll have more on this in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Impasse Blocks Effort to Fix Calif. Double-Voting Loophole. Susan Crabtree explores how officials in one county have been thwarted in their attempts to address the problem. Iran Frees U.S. Resident Held for Three Years. Susan has this story also. Blumenthal’s Pro-Abortion Bill Removes All Choice. Thomas Jipping finds much to dislike in the Women’s Health Protection Act. Devaluation Weakens Us, Imports Improve Us. RealClearMarkets editor John Tamny writes that “conservatives would be wise to re-acquaint themselves with these basic economic truths.” Why Is There Magnetite in the Human Brain? RealClearScience editor Ross Pomeroy spotlights a geobiologist’s theory. * * * The tragedy that befell Troy three millennia ago is among the oldest written stories in Western civilization. It was first an oral history passed down among the ancient Greeks for centuries by the time Homer wrote it down — in an alphabet he helped create for that purpose. As best we can tell, Homer lived about 800 years before the birth of Christ. In “The Iliad,” he’s describing events that occurred some 400 years before his time. (The story was later revisited by the Roman poet Virgil in “The Aeneid.” In that version, a Trojan named Aeneas is told by a comrade, “We’ve had our day, our power, our glory. A heartless Jove has handed all to the Greeks. Our city is ashes! Greece is lord!”) In one of the most memorable lines of Homer’s account — so vivid it was repeated by Brad Pitt in the 2004 movie “Troy” — a vengeful Achilles tells Hector in front of the gates of the city, “There are no pacts between lions and men.” But in Homer’s telling, Achilles’ words contain a self-destructive element. Hector is requesting modest terms before their fight to the death: He’s only asked Achilles to agree that the loser’s body will not be desecrated. “Don’t talk to me of pacts,” Achilles snarls in reply. “There are no binding covenants between men and lions. Wolves and lambs can enjoy no meeting of the minds. They are all bent on hating each other to the death. So [it is] with you and me. No love between us. No truce until one or the other falls and gluts with blood.” The blood spilled is Hector’s, but with his dying breath, the Trojans’ vanquished hero predicts that Achilles’ contemptuousness will lead to his own death. I’m not making a direct connection to how Donald Trump supporters treated Hillary Clinton in 2016 (or even, necessarily, how Democrats are treating President Trump today). Arrogance takes many forms, and anyway, other lines and lessons from “The Iliad” have more obvious relevance to our times. I’m thinking now about Homer’s observation about “the most preferable of evils.” Today, this concept is usually rendered as the “lesser of two evils,” and the frequency with which this sentiment is invoked during election time in the United States ought to give both Republicans and Democrats pause. It might, however, have reminded American moviegoers from an earlier generation of a more lighthearted invocation of that concept, the one Mae West used in “Klondike Annie.” “Well, when I’m caught between two evils,” she quipped, “I generally like to take the one I never tried.”  Carl M. ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,As on many things, the way the voters define “junk insurance” is quite different from the way that term is used in official Washington.Seventy-six percent (76%) of voters believe “health insurance that fails to pay for its promised coverage” should be considered “junk insurance.” A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that 13% disagree and 11% are not sure. The survey also found that most voters consider five other forms of health insurance to be junk insurance:Seventy-two percent (72%) believe that the term “junk insurance” applies to “health insurance with so much red tape that people have to wait a long time for surgery.” Just 14% disagree.Sixty-nine percent (69%) believe “health insurance that forces people to pay for coverage of medical procedures they don’t need” is junk. Only 18% disagree.Sixty-eight percent (68%) believe junk is the appropriate description for “health insurance that places a limit on care for items such as cancer treatments.” Nineteen percent (19%) disagree.Sixty-two percent (62%) consider “health insurance that won’t let you choose your own doctor”  to be junk insurance.A bare majority–51%–think junk is the right description for “health insurance that requires young people to subsidize the premiums of older people.”Highlighting a gap between the political world and the rest of the nation, just 41% believe “health insurance with low premiums that covers only major medical expenses and emergencies” is junk. On that point, 38% disagree. Many Democrats have opposed giving voters more choice and tried to label less expensive and less comprehensive insurance as junk.Just 28% think ‘”health insurance that is expensive but covers virtually every medical emergency” should be considered junk. Most (52%) disagree.  This makes it clear that voters don’t have a problem with expensive health insurance, they just don’t like the idea of being forced to buy it.Data released earlier showed that  75% of voters think they should be able to choose between health insurance plans that range in price based on the level of coverage they provide. On a different topic, 45% of voters nationwide now believe President Trump should be impeached and removed from office. Forty-two percent (42%) disagree and 14% are undecided. This is the third consecutive poll to show a slight increase in support for impeachment since Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s public statements and formal resignation two weeks ago.Still, just 25% believe the president even somewhat likely to be impeached and removed from office. Only 9% think it’s Very Likely.Today’s Number of the Day highlights the decline in public perceptions of Facebook. Thirty-one percent (31%) of voters believe the tech giant has generally been good for the United States while 34% think it’s been bad. Those numbers represent a decline for the company over the past six months. Last November, 45% thought Facebook had been good for the country while 35% said bad.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott     Stay Informed Up To The Minute and Share ContentDeeper CurrentsScott Rasmussen offers his personal insight, analysis, and opinion on current political races, issues, and controversy.
