Biden’s Big Oops
2020 Democrat frontrunner Joe Biden released a new climate plan
embracing the framework of the far-left Green New Deal, but dubbing it
the “Clean Energy Revolution.” Critics say it would funnel massive
amounts of taxpayer dollars to politically-favored energy sources and
drive electricity and gas prices higher for American households, all for
a trivial effect on greenhouse gas emissions. Here’s what it calls
for:
- Spend $1.7 trillion in clean energy, funded by reversing Trump’s corporate tax cuts
- Have a net-zero emissions goal by 2050
- Rejoin the Paris climate accord
- Pass aggressive new efficiency standards
The rollout didn’t go as smoothly as Biden probably hoped: News outlets, including The Daily Caller, found five different examples where
Biden’s climate plan plagiarized language from outside sources,
including left-wing nonprofits and Vox. (Reminder: His very first
presidential bid was brought down by a plagiarism scandal.)
A spokesperson for the campaign blamed it on a mistake,
saying, “citations were inadvertently left out of the final version of
the 22-page document.” You can only imagine the outcry if a Republican
did this. (Double standard!)
Trump’s Border Wall Gets Green Light
Despite Democrats doing everything in their power to prevent the Trump
administration from addressing the border crisis (including fixing the
immigration courts, which I had some thoughts about), progress was made yesterday regarding the wall.
“Washington, D.C., district court Judge Trevor McFadden threw out House
Democrats’ lawsuit seeking an injunction against President Trump’s
emergency border wall funding reallocation, saying that the matter is
fundamentally a political dispute and that the politicians lack standing
to make a legal case,” reports Fox News.
While President Trump celebrated the decision, an appeal is almost imminent.
Royal Drama
Let’s start with the backstory, from People:
“During an interview on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, the
then-Suits actress called Trump ‘misogynistic’ and ‘divisive’ and also
said she was thinking about moving to Canada if he won the election.”
Told this by a reported for The Sun, Trump replied, “I didn’t know that. No, I didn’t know that she was nasty.”
The mainstream media ran wild with the story, making blanket statements
that Trump called Markle “nasty.” For example, CNN’s headline read, “Trump on Meghan Markle: ‘I didn’t know that she was nasty.’’
But context from the interview is key. The interviewer was totally
egging Trump on, asking him to specifically respond to what he thought
about Markle saying she’d move to Canada if he were elected. Before and
after that question, Trump spoke very kindly of the Duchess of Sussex. Listen to the short audio clip here.
In a pre-released transcript of an interview airing this morning with Piers Morgan, Trump attempted to clarify what he meant.
“’They said some of the things that she said and it’s actually on
tape. And I said: ‘Well, I didn’t know she was nasty.’ I wasn’t
referring to she’s nasty. I said she was nasty about me. And essentially
I didn’t know she was nasty about me. You know what? She’s doing a good
job, I hope she enjoys her life… I think she’s very nice. She was
nasty to me. And that’s okay for her to be nasty, it’s not good for me
to be nasty to her and I wasn’t.”
I’m sure we’ll be hearing more about it this morning. But more importantly, can we talk about Melania continuing to SLAY in the UK with her outfit choices?
Physician Assisted Suicide The right calls it physician assisted suicide, the left calls it death with dignity. Whatever language you prefer, there’s a big push for the practice to be legalized here in the United States. This story featured in The New York Post about a 17-year-old Dutch girl being legally allowed to kill herself using euthanasia “after she was raped when younger and spent years battling depression” should give anyone pause about supporting it. “Love is letting go, in this case,” the girl wrote in an Instagram post announcing her decision to legally end her life in her living room on Sunday. “After years of battling and fighting, I am drained. I have quit eating and drinking for a while now, and after many discussions and evaluations, it was decided to let me go because my suffering is unbearable.” It’s a tragic, slippery slope. And Because It’s Hump Day… Someone hit Tracy Morgan’s fresh-off-the-lot $2 million car and he wasn’t happy about it. A first-hand account of what happened at Tiananmen Square. Taylor Swift: 30 Things I Learned Before Turning 30. The review is in… ‘Running With Beto’ doc is too boring to watch. 45 grilling ideas that I can get on-board with. MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: Sloppy Joe
It’s political malpractice for any modern campaign to lift words, intentionally or not, for its policy plans or website.
That’s ESPECIALLY true if you’re the early Democratic frontrunner. And EVEN MORE true if your 1988 presidential campaign ended in a plagiarism scandal.
But that’s exactly what happened on Tuesday, when Joe Biden’s campaign rolled out its climate plan – and admitted it forgot to give proper attribution.
“Several citations, some from sources cited in other parts of the plan, were inadvertently left out of the final version of the 22 page document,” the Biden campaign told NBC’s Garrett Haake.
Haake notes the campaign added the correct sourcing as soon as they found out about the uncited content.
AP Photo/Elise Amendola
One example, first flagged by Josh Nelson of the progressive group CREDO: Biden’s climate plan called for making carbon capture, use and storage a “widely available, cost-effective, and rapidly scalable solution to reduce carbon emissions to meet mid-century climate goals.”
But here’s the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions’ description of the Carbon Capture Coalition: “[I]ts goal is to make carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) a widely available, cost-effective, and rapidly scalable solution to reduce carbon emissions to meet mid-century climate goals.”
(It also struck us how the toplines of Biden’s climate plan — $5 trillion in public/private investment, net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 – are identical to the toplines from Beto O’Rourke’s climate plan.)
And the Washington Post found another example on education policy – lifting a line, word for word, from the XQ Institute.
“Students who participate in high-quality career and technical education are more likely to graduate, earn industry credentials, enroll in college, and have higher rates of employment and higher earnings,” the sentence read, per the Post.
More: “After The Washington Post contacted the campaign about the sentence, it added a link to the institute’s publication.”
Yes, this is a small thing. But it also should be alarming for Democrats.
How does something like this happen?
It’s the biggest mistake yet of Biden’s early 2020 campaign – a particular mistake he can’t afford to make.
Biden’s evolution on abortion rights
Meanwhile, NBC’s Heidi Przybyla takes a look at Biden’s evolution on abortion rights.
That includes, Przybyla writes, his CURRENT support for the Hyde Amendment, “a four-decade-old ban on using federal funds for abortion services, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the woman.”
From the piece: “As a U.S. senator from Delaware, Biden voted against a 1977 compromise that allowed Medicaid to fund abortions that included exceptions for victims of rape and incest in addition to concerns for the life of the mother. While the rape and incest exceptions passed in that case, Biden voted in 1981 to again remove them, in what was the most far-reaching ban on federal funds ever enacted by Congress.”
In addition: “Biden also voted several times, including in 1983, to prohibit federal workers from using health insurance on abortion services, with the only exception being to save the life of the mother.”
GOP revolts on Trump’s tariff threat
Senate Republicans’ mood on President Trump’s threatened tariffs against Mexico wasn’t good yesterday, per NBC’s Leigh Ann Caldwell and Frank Thorp.
Here were some of their comments after meeting with administration officials at the Senate GOP policy lunch.
“They’re talking about the legal argument and I think most senators are worried about the economic and political ramifications,” Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., told reporters.
“It was an interesting legal discussion, but this is a policy discussion as much as it is about the law,” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., said he told the lawyers to pass on the message that there’s a good chance that Congress will defeat any attempt to implement tariffs by voting to disapprove of the action, suggesting that Congress would be able to override any potential veto by the president.
TWEET OF THE DAY:
2020 VISION: Bernie Sanders vs. Walmart
Bernie Sanders today will be attending Walmart’s shareholders meeting, where he will “present a proposal aimed at giving workers representation on the company’s board,” NPR writes.

On the campaign trail today: Also today: Elizabeth Warren, in Fort Wayne Ind., holds a town hall with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes at 8:00 pm ET… Beto O’Rourke, in Georgia, does a town hall with NowThis at 7:30 pm ET… And Joe Biden makes stops in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … seven.
Seven.
That’s the number of Republicans in the House who voted with Democrats on a bill that would have created a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers.
The vote in the House was 237 – 187.
The bill is all but certain to die in the Senate, and the White House has said that it would veto the measure.
THE LID: Break on through to the other side

Why Carlos Maza is wrong about Steven Crowder Posted: 05 Jun 2019 05:29 AM PDT We live in a hypersensitive society in which certain words, when said as a humorous insult, really get some people angry. I’m not talking about hate speech. I’m talking specifically about labels that are only acceptable when not used to poke fun at someone. Examples of these words are descriptions of race, religion, and sexual orientation. […] The post Why Carlos Maza is wrong about Steven Crowder appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |

Good morning,Sixty-one percent (61%) of voters approve of the way the Supreme Court is doing its job. That’s down five points from a month ago. Approval is down among Hispanic voters, Democrats, and IndependentsStill,
the Court consistently earns better ratings than any other governing
institution. There is no evidence that the divisive Kavanaugh hearings
had any impact on public perceptions of the Court. In our monthly
surveys, approval has ranged from 59% to 66% since last August. The
Court earns
favorable reviews from 65% of white voters along with 54% of black
voters and 47% of Hispanic voters. On a partisan basis, 78% of
Republicans offer a positive assessment. That view is shared by 51% of
Democrats and 55% of Independent voters.Among
all voters, 34% believe the Supreme Court has too much power while 9%
say the opposite. Fifty-seven percent (57%) believe it has the right
amount of power.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now viewed favorably by 37% of voters. That’s down two points from a month ago but up a point from two months ago. Pelosi is viewed unfavorably by 49% (up three
from last month).* Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell earns favorable ratings from 26% and negative reviews from 45%.* Pelosi’s Republican counterpart, Kevin McCarthy, is viewed favorably by 24% and unfavorably by 31%. * Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s ratings are 30% favorable and 39% unfavorable.* Vice President Mike Pence gets positive reviews from 43% of voters and negative assessments from another 43%.Our daily updates of the
president’s Job Approval shows his rating remains steady at 46%. Wednesday, June 5, 2019 2020 Census Battle “Last week the challengers in the dispute over the decision to include a question about citizenship on the 2020 census notified the Supreme Court about new evidence. The new evidence, the challengers argued, indicated that a Republican redistricting strategist played a key role in the decision, which was intended to create an advantage for whites and Republicans in future elections. [On Monday] the Trump administration pushed back, calling the challengers’ accusations ‘meritless’ and an ‘eleventh-hour’ effort to ‘derail the Supreme Court’s resolution of this case’… “The district court is scheduled to hold a hearing on the challengers’ motion for sanctions [today]. The Supreme Court is expected to issue its decision before the end of June, so that the government can finalize the census questionnaire and begin printing it.” SCOTUS Blog On the radar: “House Democrats are moving to hold Trump administration officials in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas for documents related to the Trump administration’s decision to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.” AP News From the Left The left argues that the new evidence makes clear the GOP’s true motives, and condemns the citizenship question as undermining the purpose of the census. “A trove of documents brought to the attention of the Supreme Court on Thursday makes it hard to see the Trump administration’s efforts to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census as anything but a partisan power grab… An accurate and fair count of everyone in America isn’t just any policy goal. There’s much at stake with the 2020 census — from the future of the next redistricting cycle to how billions of dollars in federal funding will be allocated. The Supreme Court should see this new evidence for what it seems to reveal: A blatant attempt to rig a constitutional mandate.” Editorial Board, New York Times “[The] newly revealed documents show that the Trump administration’s purpose in putting the citizenship question on the upcoming census was not its stated one to help Hispanic voters under the Voting Rights Act, but rather to create policy that would be ‘a disadvantage to the Democrats’ and ‘advantageous to Republicans and non-Hispanic Whites.’ It’s difficult to produce a greater smoking gun than explicitly saying you are hoping to help the GOP by increasing white voting power… “Even if it is otherwise constitutionally permissible to experiment with different understandings of how to draw districts with equal populations under the equal protection clause, the government should not be able to do so if the purpose is to dilute the power of political adversaries and minority voters, as demonstrated in this case by the new revelations.” Richard L. Hasen, Slate “Long before Trump was even elected, Republican Party insiders were plotting to increase white political power at the expense of people of color. After Trump was elected, they implemented this plan by insisting that their actual goal was the protection of minority voting rights… there was the real reason and the stated reason, the truth and the pretext… “That the Republican effort to increase white political power might be motivated by partisanship rather than racism is little solace. Segregationist Democrats might not have insisted on disenfranchising black voters after Reconstruction had those voters not been staunch Republicans. Whether motivated by partisanship or racism, though, the result is the same… [Yet] the census case does not hinge on whether the citizenship question is discriminatory. Rather, as a matter of administrative law, the executive branch must follow certain procedures before making decisions. The Trump administration’s blatant dishonesty settles the question of whether it followed procedure definitively: It did not.” Adam Serwer, The Atlantic “Federal law protects the privacy of everyone who responds to the census. But that’s small comfort for immigrants and their families living in a climate of fear under President Trump. Bureau officials have for decades recognized that communities with significant immigrant populations are likely to be undercounted if there is a citizenship question on the census… “By the bureau’s own, nonpartisan analysis, adding a citizenship question to the ‘short form’ that will go to every household in America in 2020 could result in an undercount of 6.5 million people — close to the entire population of Indiana or Tennessee. And the agency has told Mr. Ross that there are better alternatives to a citizenship question that wouldn’t pose significant ‘potential quality and cost disruptions’ in administering the census, such as deriving citizenship data from the American Community Survey… At the heart of the dispute lies the question: Who gets to be counted?” Editorial Board, New York Times From the Right The right does not think the new evidence is relevant to the underlying issue at hand, and defends the citizenship question as a commonsense addition that existed through most of US history. “During oral arguments in the case, the five conservative Justices seemed to agree with the Trump Administration that Congress has delegated to the Commerce Secretary broad authority over Census questions. As Justices Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas noted in a related opinion last fall, it’s not unconstitutional for cabinet officers to have political motives for a policy. Political appointees also consult with outside experts like Hofeller all the time, as the Obama Administration often did on regulation and litigation… The real goal of flogging the Hofeller memo now is to raise enough of a political stink to intimidate the Supreme Court to block the citizenship question.” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal “The citizenship question was asked routinely until 1950, after which it was removed from the survey. In the midst of our current immigration crisis, there is certainly very good reason to know how many of the people in the country are citizens, and how many are essentially guests, whether invited or not. The nation ought to be able to have the facts at hand as we decide whether to close the southern border a la Trump or open it per Beto O’Rourke.” Frank Miele, RealClearPolitics “Equalizing for citizen population, rather than total population, will have the effect of giving eligible voters equality of electoral power. Consider this: In states with large numbers of noncitizens such as Texas, New York, and California, some state legislative districts may have twice as many eligible voters as adjoining ones. This means districts with fewer citizens have more electoral power than the districts with more citizens. That isn’t fair… “Equalizing districts by the number of citizens prevents some voters from having their votes over-weighted and over-valued, while others are under-weighted and under-valued. If one-person, one-vote — one of our most enduring egalitarian principles — has any meaning, the citizen population gaps in voting districts must not be so glaringly wide. Without census data that includes citizenship status, it is probably not possible for states and smaller jurisdictions to draw election districts that equalize eligible voters.” Edward Blum, American Enterprise Institute “It is worth noting that the citizenship question does not ask about a person’s legal status; it merely asks about citizenship status and thus has nothing whatsoever to do with immigration enforcement. In fact, federal law prevents census data from being used for anything other than statistical analysis. That is the law and there is no evidence any agency intends to violate it… If there is a legitimate fear at all, it is that media hype may create a self-fulfilling prophecy. It is reckless and irresponsible of elected leaders in our country to give minorities the mistaken impression that they have anything to fear from the census for the sake of political gain.” Ken Paxton, The Hill “What is odd about the challenge by blue states and liberal advocacy organizations is that even the United Nations… sides with the Trump administration on this issue. In its 2017 ‘Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses,’ the U.N. recommends that member countries ask census questions identifying both an individual’s country of birth and country of citizenship. A Commerce Department memorandum on this subject dated March 26, 2018, notes that countries asking a citizenship question on their census include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Ireland, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom.” Hans A. von Spakovsky, Heritage Foundation On the bright side… You can now have an official Pokémon-themed wedding in Japan with Pikachu mascots. 06/05/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Fisher Investments: Iran Relents; Mueller’s Falling Stock; Bedford Boys By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 05, 2019 08:52 am Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 5, 2019. On this date 75 years ago, the SS Empire Javelin, a British troopship built in Wilmington, Calif., eased out of Portsmouth harbor for the open waters of the English Channel. The British vessel was one of 4,100 such troop transports in an immense armada numbering nearly 7,000 ships. Some 132,600 infantrymen and airborne troops from Britain, Canada, and the United States were on those vessels, about 1,500 of them on the SS Javelin. Most of the soldiers had been aboard the ship for four days and nights while their commanders waited nervously for stormy weather to pass. In the predawn hours of June 5, 1944, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower gave the final order to launch Operation Overlord. The D-Day invasion was finally underway. Among the contingent of 1,500 Americans on the SS Empire Javelin was the 200-man Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th U.S. Army Infantry Division. Before the United States entered World War II, most of the men in Company A had been part of a National Guard unit based in the Blue Ridge foothills of Virginia. Thirty of them were from the hamlet of Bedford. We know them today, collectively, as “the Bedford Boys.” I’ll have a more on them in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. Webber’s “Power Trip.” * * * The Bedford Boys had originally gone into military service in the 1930s not necessarily because they wanted to be soldiers but because the National Guard paid $1 a day. In rural Virginia, during the Great Depression, 30 bucks a month meant something. After Pearl Harbor, however, they all knew that the stakes had changed. Incorporated into the regular Army, they set sail for England in the autumn of 1942 on the massive Queen Mary. The men felt safe aboard that iconic vessel. The fastest big ship in the world, no German submarine could keep up with her. But once they reached the U-boat infested waters of the North Atlantic, neither could her destroyer escorts. As they neared the British coast and began zigging and zagging, the Queen Mary inadvertently rammed the HMS Curacoa, splitting the antiquated cruiser in half and sending her crew of 439 into the water. Under strict instructions to keep going, the captain of the Queen Mary didn’t stop and rescue the British sailors, only 101 of whom would make it out of the water alive. The Bedford Boys above decks on that fateful October 2, 1942 day, watched that scene in horror. “We’d not been in combat before,” Roy Stevens later told historian Alex Kershaw. “We’d never seen people die like those who drowned there. The men were very disturbed.” An even more lethal catastrophe occurred six months later when the 29th Division was participating in a large-scale drill dubbed “Exercise Tiger,” which involved ships practicing landing troops ashore. Two German U-boats came across the exercise off the coast of Devon and sank two Allied ships, drowning 700 men in the process. Although the U.S. and U.K. governments covered up this disaster for 30 years, word of the tragedy spread through the ranks at the time. To some it was an unsettling omen: Although the Bedford Boys had yet to fire a shot in anger or set foot in Europe, 1,000 British and American lives had been lost in preparation for battle. This did more that impact morale. The loss of so many seasoned soldiers was one of the reasons that the men of Company A of the 116th Regiment were designated to be among the first troops to hit Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. Another was that President Roosevelt thought putting National Guard troops in the vanguard underscored the whole idea of America’s “citizen-soldiers.” Some of the British seamen tasked with ferrying the untested G.I.s across the channel believed that the very naivete of the men in Company A is what appealed to the high command: These young men didn’t have any idea of the odds stacked against them. The British sailors gave the infantry going ashore first in Normandy a grim nickname. They called them “the suicide wave.” The men of Company A had a different working theory. The way they figured it, after excelling at two years of rigorous training, they’d earned the honor of going first. “This company will be the leading wave of infantry in the invasion of Europe,” company commander Taylor Fellers would tell new Company A recruits. “You men will be part of the great force to end the war.” Yet, in the hours before the invasion, Capt. Fellers had developed his own misgivings. At 29, he was older than most of his fellow Bedford Boys, the only professional soldier among them. He’d been briefed on the battle plan for D-Day — and was unimpressed, even worried. Although the plan called for a fierce naval bombardment of the defenders on shore, Fellers was skeptical that all of the defenders would be rooted out. He shuddered at the thought of leading his men across a 300-yard wide beach while snipers and machine gunners fired away at them from bluffs a hundred feet above. Fellers confided his doubts to fellow Bedford recruit and longtime friend Ray Nance. Fifty-five years later, Nance told Richmond journalist Bill Geroux how Fellers had said matter-of-factly that with an automatic rifle on those bluffs, he could hold off an entire company by himself. “Ray,” he said, “we’ll all be killed.” Tomorrow: The Bedford Boys on D-Day.
