Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Gillibrand’s Town Hall and 2020 Prospects “Despite a soaring national profile in the U.S. Senate, [Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)] has failed to achieve liftoff as a presidential prospect. She has not broken 2 percent in a single national poll since officially declaring her candidacy in mid-March, and her 0.4 percent average in the RealClearPolitics aggregate of surveys places her behind the likes of Julián Castro, Tulsi Gabbard and even geeky long shot Andrew Yang.” Politico

On Sunday evening, Gillibrand joined ‘Fox News Sunday’ host Chris Wallace as part of a town hall event in Dubuque, Iowa. Fox News From the Left The left wonders if Gillibrand still has a path to the nomination, and applauds her town hall performance. “In the two years leading up to her 2020 run, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand spent millions of dollars building up a network of online and grass-roots donors who could power her coming presidential campaign. But after Ms. Gillibrand’s big announcement in January, her expensively laid plans unraveled as those potential contributors all but vanished… Her campaign says she is connecting one voter at a time in coffee shops and living rooms. But in a celebrity-fueled climate dominated by mass media and viral moments online, it is not clear such a pathway exists in 2020.”
Shane Goldmacher, New York Times

“The modern media environment favors the flashy over the wonkish. For example, when Trump compared Democratic challenger Pete Buttigieg to Mad Magazine’s Alfred E. Newman, it produced 26 percent more media mentions than Gillibrand’s Family Bill of Rights…

“She was the first Democratic presidential candidate to offer a 100-day plan for boosting families, the first to offer a comprehensive abortion rights plan, the first to release her tax returns, the first to swear off using hacked information in her campaign, and one of the few to propose giving voters money to spend on the candidates of their choice. None of that has translated into anything close to a first-place showing in the polls. Nor has it garnered much media attention. But from the back of the pack, Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand of New York is building her campaign on ideas.”
Jerry Zremski, The Buffalo News

“A New York senator who’s long made gender equity a core plank of her political identity (and now her 2020 candidacy), Gillibrand delivered a town hall appearance that only underscored the importance of this message. One exchange, in particular, illustrated the need for greater representation in politics. At one point, Wallace pressed Gillibrand to explain a tweet… emphasizing that the future was female and intersectional. ‘What do you mean our future is female?’ he asked. ‘We want women to have a seat at the table,’ Gillibrand replied. ‘But what about men?’ Wallace asked, seemingly suggesting that her message could imply some kind of exclusion, a common fear that’s been expressed about movements that advance people who have historically been underrepresented in different fields…

“‘They’re already there! Do you not know?’ Gillibrand hit back, prompting laughter and cheers from the audience… Seventy-seven percent of the House and 75 percent of the Senate is still comprised of men, and the US has yet to ever elect a woman president. To suggest that men don’t already have a seat at the table would mean ignoring those facts. Yet as different groups work to address existing gaps, it’s prompted concern among some people who’ve traditionally dominated certain fields. Gillibrand’s response confronts such fears head-on.”
Li Zhou, Vox

Yet some have noted “the limitations of a perceived niche candidate, even one representing a high-profile social movement that helped fuel voter turnout less than a year ago… Four senators running for president — Kamala D. Harris of California, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Gillibrand — all cite their success in winning statewide elections as proof that a woman can reach heights no woman has before. All rail against sexism and gender pay gaps. All press for a woman’s right to choose. The issues on which Gillibrand hoped to build her campaign — reproductive rights, paid family leave and gender pay equality — are no longer distinguishing ones. Now, they are mainstream, invoked by female and male candidates alike…

“As one New York-based strategist put it… ‘It’s one thing to emphasize the woman part when you’re running against all men. It’s another thing when you’re running against a lot of very qualified women who are also moms and more.’”
Chelsea Janes, Washington Post

Finally, while “Gillibrand has made abortion the central issue of her presidential campaign… public opinion on specific abortion policies is still mixed… Roughly two-thirds of Americans say abortion should generally be illegal in the second trimester, and more than 80 percent say it should generally be illegal in the third trimester—numbers that have held steady since the 1990s…

“The crucial swing states that helped Trump secure victory over Clinton—including Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Florida—have only razor-thin majorities supporting abortion in all or most cases… These voters could really matter: Some moderates and conservatives who were initially uncomfortable with Trump specifically point to the third presidential debate, when Hillary Clinton endorsed third-trimester abortion, as the decisive moment that solidified their reluctant support for Trump. Given the way the current Democratic primary is shaping up on this issue, that dynamic could conceivably play out again in 2020.”
Emma Green, The Atlantic From the Right The right is critical of Gillibrand’s candidacy and town hall performance, highlighting her seemingly opportunistic changes in policy positions over time. “Gillibrand, the tip of the spear for the #MeToo movement in Congress, Senate successor to Hillary Clinton and one time doyenne of the Wall Street bundlers doesn’t have enough donors to meet her party’s standard for participation in its first debate later this month. She’s still short of the 65,000-donor mark, a population not much larger than that of little Dubuque, here at the intersection of Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. So what on earth is she still running for?…

“When Gillibrand, like her colleagues Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker, started getting ready to run for president they didn’t know a lot of the things now shaping the race. They didn’t know that Joe Biden really was that popular among black voters. They didn’t know that seven senators would be running. They didn’t know that Democrats would go gaga for the 37-year-old mayor of the fourth largest city in Indiana. These are not people who got to where they are by being squeamish or for lack of ego or ambition, so what do you expect them to do except slog on.”
Chris Stirewalt, Fox News

She just seems too much like Hillary Clinton, and voters who want Trump to lose are probably not going to pick someone who reminds them of the person to whom Trump did not lose. Let me be clear: I do not mean that they are alike simply because they are both women… there was literally a 2010 Vanity Fair profile titled ‘In Hillary’s Footsteps: Kirsten Gillibrand,’ and the same cannot be said for other female candidates — such as Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren, both of whom are doing fairly well, especially compared with Gillibrand.”
Katherine Timpf, National Review

At the town hall, “when asked about gun violence, given the recent shootings in Virginia Beach, Gillibrand said, ‘the NRA is the worst organization in this country.’ She then implied the NRA is okay with selling guns to terrorists: ‘They care more about their profits than the American people, they care more about selling guns to someone on the terror watch list or with a grave mental illness or who has a violent criminal background.’ Gillibrand then laid out a three-step plan for reducing gun violence, including: universal background checks; banning bump-stocks, assault rifles, and military-style weapons; and creating federal anti-trafficking laws. None of these steps could have prevented the Virginia Beach shooting.”
Chrissy Clark, The Federalist

The NRA is a non-profit, it doesn’t sell guns, and the NRA backed background checks at the point of sale to prevent criminals from purchasing firearms. The ‘terror watch list’ issue had more to with that being an unadjudicated (and vastly overused) status developed by law enforcement without any recourse to due process. Even some of the people who develop those lists think it’s potentially dangerous to counterterrorism efforts to conflate its use with gun control. Also, Gillibrand accuses the NRA of torpedoing the banning of ‘bump stocks,’ used in the Las Vegas massacre, when Donald Trump himself banned bump stocks last year…

“When she represented only ‘my rural upstate district,’ Gillibrand was more than happy to wave the NRA flag. When it came time to run for statewide office, Gillibrand changed her position to suit her political needs. And now that she’s running for the Democratic presidential nomination — and taking flak from progressives over appearing on Fox — the NRA is now ‘the worst organization in the country.’”
Ed Morrissey, Hot Air

“If you believe in gun control, fine. Stick to it. Defend it. If you believe in the Second Amendment, fine. Stick to it. Defend it. But pick a side and stick to it. I’m not saying people can’t grow and change their point-of-view but this is straight up political pandering. She didn’t just alienate one side. She’s alienated everyone.”
Beth Baumann, Townhall

In addition to the Second Amendment, her stance on immigration has flip-flopped since joining the Senate. Gillibrand has referred to Trump’s immigration and border security policies as racist on multiple occasions, despite previously promulgating identical positions — she contended in January that those same positions were not racist when she supported them. She later reversed her position on allowing illegal immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses only a day after she announced that she will seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020.”
Molly Prince, The Daily Caller

Gillibrand is attempting “to find the overlap between aggrieved soccer moms who voted for Hillary Clinton but can’t get with Elizabeth Warren’s breathless cronyism, abortion absolutists who spar with intersectionalists on the basis that they sideline feminism, and #MeToo activists who are mostly in it for the political points. All of this is to say that Gillibrand doesn’t really have a constituency.”
Tiana Lowe, Washington Examiner On the bright side…

The Resurgent’s Morning Briefing for June 4,2019 View this email in your browser Share Tweet Forward Good morning,

Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day.  At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day.  You can listen live here.

If Governments Can Target Chick-Fil-A, President Trump Can Target AT&T I don’t write the rules, folks. I don’t. This has been going on for a while now. The left, via the government, harasses contractors in California demanding to know if state contractors have supported the NRA. Local governments, sometimes supported by Democrat state officials, block Chick-Fil-A because of its owners’ personal Christian faith. CNN, the Daily Beast, and other outlets harass private American citizens for their political choices. Progressive activists demand corporations stop advertising on Fox and conservative talk radio. Again, I don’t make the rules. The left clearly does and President Trump is playing by those rules. On Twitter, President Trump is urging people to complain to AT&T or boycott AT&T over news coverage at CNN the President thinks is unfair. Heck, AT&T now owns Warner Media, which is threatening to boycott Georgia because of pro-life legislation. Wait, Wasn’t This Supposed to be About Women’s Health? Indiana’s Attorney General Curtis Hill has hastily appealed a recent ruling from pro-abortion federal judge Sarah Barker.  For almost two years, a dangerous abortion mill from Texas notorious for poor sanitation and health conditions has been fighting the state of Indiana over their licensing requirements. Long story short, Indiana has passed laws requiring abortion clinics […] The post Wait, Wasn’t This Supposed to be About Women’s Health? appeared first on The Resurgent.  Read in browser »

Politico Wrongly Tried to Claim a Pastor Apologized for Praying for President Trump You can read the article from Politico here. Trump on Suppressors: ‘I Don’t Like Them At All’ In response to the mass shooting that transpired in Virginia Beach, Va., on Friday, President Trump was pressed about his positions on silencers—a misnomer for suppressors—since the suspect used one to kill the 12 victims. Escape The Indoors This Month Tensions are high on social media. People are at each other’s throats over insignificant things. Illinois’ Legislative Procrastination Extravaganza: A POTpourri of Issues Before the legislative session ended, the Illinois General Assembly addressed legalizing recreational marijuana and several other issues. Chinese people are a nationalistic people, and with the hijacking of the word “country” by the “Party,” the last few generations of Chinese have lived in a warped reality. As children, you are bound by duty to love, forgive, and protect your mother. It’s tragic if you believe that your “mother” is the Communist Party.   President Trump Visits the UK Royal Family
Trump’s visit to the UK royal family has sparked international attention, though candidly, it seems much of the media coverage appears to wish for conflict when the visit has been largely an uneventful affair.  On Monday evening, Queen Elizabeth and the royal family hosted a state banquet at Buckingham Palace for President Trump and First Lady Melania. Toasts were shared between Trump and the Queen. From Fox News: “Visits by American presidents always remind us of the close and lasting relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States,” Queen Elizabeth said in her toast, before referencing the Allied mission on D-Day during World War II. “We owe an immeasurable debt to the joint British, American and Allied forces that landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944,” the queen said. “The anniversary of D-Day reminds us all of all our country has shared together.” Trump is set to travel to Normandy later this week to commemorate 75 years after the Allied invasion of France. In his toast, Trump reaffirmed the close ties between London and Washington – noting the countries’ joint effort in defeating Nazi Germany during World War II. “The bond between our nations was sealed in that great crusade,” Trump said. “We reaffirm our common values that will continue well into the future.” Earlier in the day, the President and the First Lady lunched privately with the Queen and accompanied her on a tour of a collection of artifacts. Trump then partook in the laying of the wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey.  Prior to the visit, the President exchanged jabs with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who recently wrote an op-Ed calling the President a “global threat” and compared his behavior to that of Europe’s worst twentieth century dictators – hyperbolic drivel, even by Leftist standards. Trump responded by referring to Khan as the “twin” of NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, “except shorter.”

NRA Keeps the Receipts on Kirsten Gillibrand
Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), currently vying for the 2020 Democrat nomination, hosted a townhall in Dubuque, Iowa on Sunday, where she launched several attacks on the NRA, alleging that the NRA is concerned “more about their profits than the American people” and “lies” in order to cushion their bottom line. The NRA didn’t take kindly to the criticism, particularly given GIllibrand’s bubbly praise of the group back in 2008. From Fox News: “Gillibrand called us the worst org in the country, but when she represented NY20, she wrote us: ‘I appreciate the work that the NRA does to protect gun owners rights, and I look forward to working with you for many years,'” the NRA wrote on Twitter. “Now that she’s looking to crack 1%, she’ll say anything.” Gillibrand, according to the NRA, sent the letter to NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris Cox on Sept. 19, 2008, when she was a member of Congress representing a rural district in upstate New York. The ILA, or Institute for Legislative Action, is the lobbying arm of the NRA. “I want to be very clear that I always have and always will believe that the correct interpretation of the 2nd amendment [sic] is that it applies to an individual’s right to carry guns, and does not apply generally to the National Guard or a group of individuals in a State,” Gillibrand wrote to Cox, following what she described as a meeting with him the previous August. Gillibrand, in the letter, went on to reject a slew of gun control measures, saying she was “adamantly opposed” to the idea “outright banning firearms for cosmetic features, bullets of an [sic] random size, or banning magazines from holding an arbitrary number of cartridges.” Those limitations, she said, were “random” and intended solely to “limit gun ownership or usage.” Gillibrand concluded: “I appreciate the work that the NRA does to protect gun owners rights, and I look forward to working with you for many years.” The recent “gotcha” moment from the NRA bolsters accusations that Gillibrand is merely an opportunist who changes stances based on whichever view is most popular or palatable at a given time. In other words, it’s possible she holds no real core principles. Also probably explains why she is polling at just 1% in the crowded field of Democrat contenders.

Beauty Recommendations That I LOVE Too Faced, It’s Bananas Brightening Setting Powder, $30
This product serves as a hybrid between a setting powder and highlighter. It’s subtle enough for everyday use, has a reasonably pleasant scent, and doesn’t appear cakey. This product can be used over the entire face, but I found it best under the eyes. Trish McEvoy, Eye Brightener Pencil, $25
What a game-changer this pencil is.  I usually am skeptical of the hyped niche products, but this product is wonderful, despite its seemingly narrow usage. This pencil goes great directly under the brows, brightening the eyes. Also ideal for use in lieu of eyeshadow when you’re rushing out the door. It can also be applied in the inner corners of the eyes or underneath the eyes.  Bobbi Brown, Crushed Liquid Lip, $26
Bobbi Brown just released this product for the summer, and I like it. It feels like the lovechild of a lip balm, a lip gloss, and a sheer lipstick.  It comes in tens of shades, and it’s perfect for when you’re not interested in committing to a lipstick, but want something to last longer than a gloss. I bought it in “Hippy Shake” because I’m always on the hunt for the perfect pale pink lipstick. BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist.

MEET THE PRESS

FIRST READ: 2020 Dem race remains stuck in place

The more things have changed in the 2020 Democratic race for president, the more they’ve stayed the same.

That’s the conclusion from two new national polls – CNN (which is a qualifying poll for the first Dem debates) and the online Morning Consult (which isn’t).

In both surveys, Joe Biden leads Bernie Sanders by a 2-to-1 margin or close to it.

They’re trailed by Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris.

Then it’s Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke.

Then it’s Cory Booker – followed by Amy Klobuchar and Julian Castro.

And then it’s everyone else at or below 1 percent.

Now, these are national polls – we haven’t seen a good Iowa poll since April, or a good New Hampshire one since early May.

But it’s pretty clear the Democratic race is pretty much stuck in place until the first debates, which take place three weeks from now.

Democrats’ non-impeachment impeachment plans

Have House Democrats found a way to embark on impeaching President Trump – without explicitly calling it that?

“House Democrats announced Monday they’ll hold a hearing next week focused on the Mueller report and ‘presidential obstruction,’” per NBC’s Alex Moe, Mike Memoli and Dareh Gregorian.

“The Judiciary Committee hearing will include testimony from former White House counsel John Dean, a key figure in the Watergate hearings that helped lead to Richard Nixon’s resignation as president.”

Bloomberg News also reports that House Dems are planning full House votes to hold Attorney General William Barr and former White House Counsel Don McGahn in contempt over defying subpoenas.

“Welcome to House Democrats’ non-impeachment impeachment campaign,” as Politico puts it.

Pete versus the 2020 field on Al Franken

Pete Buttigieg doesn’t think Dem senators should have pushed Al Franken to resign his seat after allegations that he inappropriately touched women – setting himself apart from much of the 2020 field.

Here was Buttigieg in a town hall with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews last night:

MATTHEWS: Al Franken, should [he] have been pushed to resign from the U.S. Senate by the Democratic Caucus, his fellow caucus members?

BUTTIGIEG: I think it was his decision to make. But I think the way that we basically held him to a higher standard than the GOP does their people has been used against us.

[snip]

MATTHEWS: I know, but were [Democratic senators] right to do that, to push him out of the Senate? Because they did.

BUTTIGIEG: I would not have applied that pressure at that time before we knew more.

Kirsten Gillibrand fired back with this statement:

“Eight credible allegations of sexual harassment, two since he was elected senator, and one from a congressional staffer. That is not too high a standard, regardless of how the Republican Party handles this behavior.”

And Gillibrand wasn’t the only 2020 Dem senator who called for Franken to resign, as the Atlantic’s Edward-Isaac Dovere notes.

Joining her were Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Michael Bennet, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

TWEET OF THE DAY: A lot has changed in the past 16 years

2020 VISION: Biden rolls out his climate plan

NBC’s Garrett Haake reports that Joe Biden will issue his climate plan while campaigning in New Hampshire today.

The toplines of the plan, which references the Green New Deal as a “crucial framework” :

  • Spending $1.7 trillion in clean energy – paid for rolling back the Trump tax cuts – in the hopes of leveraging $5 trillion in public and private investment;
  • Setting a net-zero emissions goal by 2050;
  • Rejoining the Paris climate accord;
  • And promising aggressive pollution cuts and efficiency standards.

On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden stumps in New Hampshire, stopping in Berlin and Concord… Elizabeth Warren is in Michigan, where she visits Detroit and holds a town hall in Lansing… And Jay Inslee also visits Michigan.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … more than 4 million.

More than 4 million.

That’s how many people are at risk of not being counted in the upcoming Census, according to a new study from the Urban Institute.

The new report finds that problems like underfunding, poor testing and the administration’s attempts to add a question about respondents’ citizenship status could fuel the undercount, which would disproportionately affect minorities.

Read more on the new study from NBC’s Dartunorro Clark here.

THE LID: Working hard? Or hardly working?

Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when special guest star Mike Memoli took a look at how Joe Biden’s campaign schedule compares to the day-to-day events for his competitors.

ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss

Julia Ainsley and Jacob Soboroff have a new exclusive report on how overcrowding is leaving migrant children sleeping on concrete or even outside.

Here’s how Mexico is responding to even more ramped-up pressure from the Trump administration on immigration. (And meanwhile, GOP lawmakers are wondering if their next steps may be votes to block Trump’s Mexico tariffs.)

A small software company wants to give 2020 candidates a free anti-hacking program, but the FEC may not let them.

And the New York Times checks in with now-cannabis pitchman John Boehner.

Another 50% are opposed.Support for fighting illegal immigration in this way comes from 73% of Republicans, 56% of Independents, and 25% of Democrats. Men (55%) are more supportive than women (46%).* While 50% support the tariff, just 25% believe it will be good for the United States and 45% think it will be bad.* Thirty-one percent (31%) believe it will hurt Mexico more than the United States while 24% believe our country will suffer more.* Thirty-nine percent (39%) believe it is likely that  the threat of tariffs will encourage the Mexican government to help stop illegal immigration. Sixty-one percent (61%) disagree.Collectively, these numbers suggest a large number of Americans are supportive of the effort even while being skeptical of its effectiveness. It perhaps suggests a willingness to simply keep trying new approaches for halting illegal immigration until something works. Consistent with other survey data, 82% believe that illegal immigration is bad for the United States. At the same time, 77% believe legal immigration is good.On a different topic, 17% of all voters now trust the federal government to do the right thing most or all of the time. Forty-two percent (42%) rarely or never trust it.  In between are 41% who trust the federal government some of the time.Younger voters in general and Millennials in particular are more trusting of government than older generations. The federal government is trusted most or all of the time by 27% of Millennial voters, 17% of GenX voters, and 17% of GenZ. However, among Baby Boomers, just 11% are that trusting, a figure that falls to 7% among the Silent Generation. On impeachment 43% now believe President Trump should be impeached and removed from office. Another 44% disagree and 13% are undecided. The latest results are virtually identical to data collected prior to the weekend. Both surveys were conducted after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s public statements last week. Both showed support for impeachment is up a couple of points from earlier surveys. This could be the result of Mueller’s comments or it might simply be statistical noise. Just 21% are following news about the issue Very Closely and only 23% believe the president even somewhat likely to be impeached and removed from office. Finally, today’s Number of the Day notes that eight of the 15 fastest-growing cities were in the South. REAL CLEAR POLITICS

06/04/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Fisher Investments: Gillibrand’s Pledge; GOP Peril; Ike’s Choice By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 04, 2019 08:40 am
Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 4, 2019. Seventy-five years ago, in a conference room at an estate called Southwick House near Portsmouth in southern England, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and his top commanders received a fateful briefing from a British military officer named James Martin Stagg. A captain in the Royal Air Force, Stagg was a meteorologist by training. Twenty-four hours earlier, he’d warned Eisenhower that June 5 would bring driving winds and rain to the coast — impossible weather for dispatching a huge landing force across the English Channel. This report, which was accurate, delayed the Normandy invasion for at least a day. Now, at 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, 1944, Capt. Stagg had more news. “Gentlemen,” he said somberly, “there have been some rapid and unexpected developments in the situation.” His team had detected a fair-weather front on the other side of the channel and believed that from the night of June 5 to the morning of June 6 it would be clear enough for the Allies’ bombers to see their targets and that the seas, although rough, would calm just enough accommodate a crossing of the channel and dispatching the 130,000 troops already aboard the armada of ships amassed on the coast. Then the window would close again. “In short,” wrote Cornelius Ryan in his classic D-Day account, “what Eisenhower was being told was that a barely tolerable period of fair conditions … would prevail for just a little more than 24 hours.” But Stagg couldn’t give a guarantee. So what to do? Gen. Eisenhower — “Ike” as the Supreme Allied Commander was known throughout the English-speaking world — expressed the concern of the other military men at Southwick House. “The question,” Eisenhower said, “is just how long can you keep this operation on the end of a limb and let it hang there.” He was speaking, of course, about Operation Overlord, the cross-channel invasion we know as D-Day. Losing the element of surprise, Ike believed, would result in losing many more American, British, and Canadian lives — and perhaps compromise the entire endeavor. I’ll have a more on this pivot point in World War II in a moment. What’s Next for “Jeopardy’s” James Holzhauer? RealClearLife considers the options ahead for the contestant whose long winning streak came to an end Monday night. * * * After Capt. Stagg left Southwick House the night of June 4, 1944, Eisenhower discussed the weather with his comrades. The British air force generals were skeptical that the weather would be clear enough for the pilots to see their targets. Bernard L. Montgomery on the other hand, while conceding it was “chancy,” thought it worth the risk. His opinion carried weight: Although his relationship with Eisenhower would deteriorate by year’s end, it was Montgomery who had insisted, wisely, that the D-Day landing force consist of eight divisions instead of three. Ike’s chief of staff, U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, an officer whose judgment was trusted by Eisenhower and George C. Marshall, also recommended going. Perhaps “Beetle” Smith and “Monty” were saying what they knew Eisenhower wanted to do. In any event, Ike didn’t think he had much choice. After hesitating for a couple of long minutes, he said, “I don’t see how we could do anything else.” Sometime after 4:30 a.m. the following morning, Eisenhower confirmed the order. The invasion took place, the Allies took the beachhead, the long march toward Germany commenced, and the Third Reich was destroyed. Afterward, Eisenhower went into Republican politics, starting at the top. He ran for president of the United States with an aspirational campaign still remembered for its simple, heartfelt slogan: “I like Ike.” Sixteen years ago on this date, while dedicating a statue of Dwight Eisenhower in the U.S. Capitol, Nancy Pelosi and other congressional leaders paid tribute to him. “On this day, June 4, he had to decide whether to launch the D-Day attack on June 6 — despite the uncertain weather — or postpone it and hope for better weather later,” Pelosi said that day. “He decided to go ahead and launch the greatest seaborne invasion of all time. On this day in 1944, General Eisenhower made the right choice, and his choice made the difference between victory and defeat, between freedom and tyranny for millions of innocents.” Pelosi also noted that June 4 was another milestone in Eisenhower’s life. “Years later, on this same day, June 4, [he] began another chapter in his life,” she said. “On this day in 1952, he announced his candidacy for the White House.” “President Eisenhower believed in America,” she continued. “He fought to protect it. He worked to make it a better place. And he brought balance and thoughtfulness to everything that he did. President Eisenhower said what he believed and did what he thought was right. And that is why, 50 years after his inauguration, America still likes Ike.”  Carl M. Cannon
