13.) AXIOS
Axios AM
😎 Happy Friday! Smart Brevity™ count: 1,172 words … 4½ minutes.
Social distancing in East Room: President Biden’s news conference — and President Bill Clinton’s first formal presser, on March 23, 1993. Photos: Evan Vucci/AP, Marcy Nighswander/AP
President Biden revealed in vivid display this week the thinking animating his 100-day plan: Do not allow outside events to take his eye off the make-or-break imperatives of virus eradication and economic growth, Axios managing editor Margaret Talev writes.
The big picture: He dispatched Vice President Harris to handle the brewing crisis at the border. And, in yesterday’s press conference, he made plain gun control and other topics may need to wait.
- On gun control: “It’s a matter of timing.”
- “[S]uccessful presidents — better than me — have been successful, in large part, because they know how to time what they’re doing — order it, decide and prioritize what needs to be done.”
Zoom out: Since his comeback in the South Carolina primary more than a year ago, Biden has been shockingly disciplined, with a robot-like focus on the virus and the economy. It is a no-brainer strategy because absent growth or total defeat of the virus, his presidential power wanes.
- This gives him a narrow band to focus his mind and time. You saw this in his 62-minute press conference. He’ll continue to push the idea of compromise — until he doesn’t, which aides tell us is inevitable.
- “Here’s the deal,” Biden said. “I’m a fairly practical guy. I want to get things done,” the president said in explaining why he’s not pushing now to eliminate the legislative filibuster, even though he sees it as a Jim Crow-era relic.
- “Successful electoral politics,” Biden said, “is the art of the possible.”
What to watch: His comments on voting rights were harsh and striking, and signal his appetite to fight this out, even if it means chucking the filibuster to get it done.
Yesterday’s virtual hearing. Photos: House Energy and Commerce Committee via Reuters
During a virtual hearing, House members warned the CEOs of Facebook, Twitter and Google that a legislative hammer is about to land, Axios’ Kim Hart, Ashley Gold and Margaret Harding McGill report.
- Members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee told the CEOs that their businesses prioritize ad revenue and engagement over rooting out content that harms users, especially children.
Why it matters: The relatively consistent lines of questioning, sometimes crossing party lines, displayed a new unity among members of Congress in their concern about the companies — and a stronger likelihood that they might pass punitive laws.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg disputed the claims: “While it may be true that people might be more likely to click on it in the short term, it’s not good for our business or our product or our community for this content to be there … [W]e run the company for the long term.”

Congratulations! You’re about to be eligible to … wait some more for the vaccine.
- Many states are expanding eligibility for COVID vaccines to all adults. But that doesn’t mean they have enough vaccine supplies to offer appointments to everyone, Axios’ David Nather writes.
Some states are moving a lot faster than Biden’s goal of making all Americans eligible for vaccinations by May 1. The latest include Florida and California; all Florida adults will be eligible to get the shots as of April 5, and California will be open to all adults on April 15.
📺 Sign of our times … Headline last night on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes”: “WHY WE CAN’T FORGET ABOUT COVID YET.”

There’s a growing push among federal lawmakers for a road user fee to fund highway repairs, Axios’ Joann Muller writes from Detroit.
- Why it matters: The existing federal gas tax isn’t enough to meet rising costs, and the budget gap will only grow wider as cleaner cars burn less fuel.
One area of potential agreement between the parties is a vehicle-miles-traveled (VMT) system that would charge drivers a penny or two for each mile logged behind the wheel.
- Drivers would report their mileage electronically, using a plug-in device in their cars or a smartphone app.
- Supporters say it’s a way to ensure that electric vehicle owners — who currently pay no fuel taxes — chip in their fair share for road maintenance.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R), joined by six other white men, signed an overhaul of state elections that Democrats say will disproportionately disenfranchise voters of color — then tweeted this.
Protesters outside the state Capitol called it “Jim Crow 2.0,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:
- “Absentee voters will be required to submit driver’s license numbers or other documentation … Over 200,000 Georgia voters lack a driver’s license or state ID number.”
- “Members of the public will be prohibited from distributing food or water to voters waiting in line.”
“Republican lawmakers said the measure will increase trust in election outcomes following unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud” in 2020.
State Rep. Park Cannon (D) was arrested and forcibly removed from the Capitol for attempting to knock on Kemp’s door during the bill signing.
Asian Americans make up only about 2% of the nation’s law enforcement officers — an underrepresentation that ripples through small towns and major cities, Axios’ Russell Contreras and Shawna Chen write.
- Why it matters: Law enforcement agencies are facing criticism for not adequately reporting hate crimes and not having enough Asian-American officers to adequately investigate cases.
The demographic is vastly underrepresented among sworn officers in police departments, even in cities with sizable Asian-American populations.
If not in their classrooms, or their movie theaters, or their churches — and now their grocery stores — where can Coloradans feel safe?
- Alayna Alvarez and John Frank of Axios Denver write that Coloradans are fighting the fear of moving about their daily lives, as the country mourns 10 lives lost in Boulder:
Maybe it’s the fact we’re emotionally weary from the pandemic. Maybe it’s because grocery shopping remained one of the few essential routines in the past year. Maybe it’s because this is a different venue for violence, and we weren’t prepared.

This map shows 150+ ships stuck in the Suez Canal — the conduit for about 10% of world trade — after a mega-ship the height of the Empire State Building was blown sideways and got wedged between the banks.
- A salvage company said the vessel may take weeks to free. Cranes may need to offload some of the container cargo to help re-float the ship.

With crypto art all the rage, Sotheby’s Paris auctioned a real-life Vincent Van Gogh for $15.4 million — around twice what was expected.
- “Street Scene in Montmartre,” which had been out of the public eye in a family collection for 100+ years, is one of the few paintings by the Dutch Impressionist master to remain in private hands, AP reports.
The New York Times
The N.Y. Times’ Kevin Roose staged a clever experiment to illuminate “the newest frontier in the cryptocurrency gold rush” — non-fungible tokens, or NFTs.
- His column in yesterday’s paper said: “Buy This Column on the Blockchain!”
- He auctioned a crypto-t0ken version, with proceeds going to the Times’ Neediest Cases Fund.
At day’s end, the digital column went to an NFT collector (@3fmusic) for 350 Ether — $562,737.
- Roose tweeted: “anyone know a good crypto accountant.”

The most important sentence from Biden’s presser
Presented by Facebook
DRIVING THE DAY
“It’s a matter of timing.”
If there were a one-sentence takeaway from President JOE BIDEN’S first press conference, that may be it.
Over and over in the East Room, the president made it clear Thursday that he’s in control of the timing of his legislative priorities and that he would not allow events to overtake his plans. Guns, immigration, voting rights, filibuster reform — the big issues that have intervened recently and that dominated questioning by reporters — would have to wait.
If Biden were an Italian grandmother, he would have been at the podium putting his hand up to the reporters and patiently repeating, “Aspetta!” Wait.
“The other problems we’re talking about, from immigration to guns and the other things you mentioned, are long-term problems,” he said. “They’ve been around a long time. And what we’re going to be able to do, God willing, is now begin one at a time to focus on those as well.”
Translation: They are not going to be the focus of legislative action in the near term. Biden made it crystal clear that his plan — hatched months ago during the campaign — for a one-two punch of a Covid relief bill followed by an infrastructure bill will not be derailed by events.
He will detail his plans on a potentially $3-4 trillion infrastructure bill in a speech next Wednesday in Pittsburgh, and that will remain the top White House priority for weeks to come.
“It’s a matter of timing,” he said when asked about gun control legislation. “As you’ve all observed, successful presidents — better than me — have been successful, in large part, because they know how to time what they’re doing — order it, decide and prioritize what needs to be done.”
Biden made some news: He intends to have troops out of Afghanistan by year’s end, he will likely run for reelection, and he may go “beyond” his current view on filibuster reform “if there’s complete lockdown and chaos.” But he did his best to tamp down expectations on the trio of issues that reporters and many activists are obsessed with this week because of recent events (guns, immigration and voting rights).
Our questions are: 1) Will this work? 2) Is it a sound decision given the gravity of those three issues?
On immigration — and specifically the crisis created by the annual border surge — Biden has kicked the problem to his VP, the same way BARACK OBAMA once kicked the problem to Biden. It’s fair to say, as Biden did, that it’s a long-term problem that can’t be fixed overnight with new legislation, even if he could pass something through the Senate.
On guns, the White House has decided that the crisis of gun violence is simply not as important as the massive public investment and social welfare agenda that Biden wants to pass next.
On voting rights, this case is a lot harder to make, given the rollbacks happening in the states and the threat to democracy that Democrats argue the changes augur.
That brings to mind what may have been the most interesting and overlooked comment of the day Thursday.
“I predict to you, your children or grandchildren are going to be doing their doctoral thesis on the issue of who succeeded: autocracy or democracy?” Biden said when discussing China. “Because that is what is at stake, not just with China.”
There is an increasingly dominant argument in Democratic circles that if one really believes that about democracy’s fragile future, then bolstering it should start at home. And if you believe that, then there’s nothing more urgent then both nuking the legislative filibuster and passing the Democrats’ voting rights agenda. While Biden gave both issues more support yesterday, he’s still telling Democrats the time isn’t right. Aspetta.
The press conference ledealls:
— POLITICO’s Anita Kumar highlights the absence of a major topic that reporters did not ask about — Covid-19: “Biden meets the press and the pandemic disappears”
— AP leans into Biden’s (possible?) openness to filibuster reform: “Biden leaves door open for Senate changes to advance agenda”
— WSJ tries to cover the gamut: “Biden’s First Press Conference Tackles Filibuster, Immigration, Afghanistan”
— WaPo emphasizes priorities and timing: “Biden promises to tackle the nation’s crises, but says some may wait”
— NYT goes impressionistic: “Timing Is Everything, Biden Says, and ‘Politics Is the Art of the Possible’”
WATCH: Filibuster reform is necessary for Biden’s agenda, explained
The ongoing debate over filibuster reform took center stage in political news this week. TARA and EUGENE look back at Biden’s response over eliminating the filibuster during his first official press conference on Thursday. They also discuss why the filibuster is the only way Democrats can pass legislation on gun control and voting rights.

SCOOP OF THE DAY — “‘Alex Azar Anonymous’: Trump health officials start a club to counter former HHS chief,” by Adam Cancryn: “A small group of top Trump health officials recently held a series of discussions to coordinate their accounts of the administration’s troubled Covid-19 response, worried they will be scapegoated by old colleagues – including their onetime boss, former health secretary Alex Azar, according to six people with knowledge of their interactions.
“Much of the group – which includes former FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, former CDC Director Robert Redfield, former Medicare chief Seema Verma and former White House Covid coordinator Deborah Birx – had fraught relationships with Azar, whose own accounts of the administration’s pandemic efforts have often diverged from theirs. … In calls and text messages, members of the group have swapped notes, compared recollections and sent updates on media requests and interview opportunities, four people with knowledge of the matter said.”
BIDEN’S FRIDAY — The president and VP KAMALA HARRIS will receive the President’s Daily Brief at 10:20 a.m. Biden will receive the weekly economic briefing at 2:10 p.m. He’ll take part in a virtual fundraiser for Atlanta Mayor KEISHA LANCE BOTTOMS at 3 p.m. And he’ll leave the White House at 6:15 p.m., arriving in Wilmington, Del., at 7:10 p.m.

POLITICS ROUNDUP
ONCE A REALITY TV STAR … “Trump’s secret sit-down with Ohio candidates turns into ‘Hunger Games,’” by Alex Isenstadt: “Donald Trump was headlining a fundraiser on Wednesday night at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla. But before the dinner began, the former president had some business to take care of: He summoned four Republican Senate candidates vying for Ohio’s open Senate seat for a backroom meeting. …
“What ensued was a 15-minute backroom backbiting session reminiscent of Trump’s reality TV show. [Josh] Mandel said he was ‘crushing’ [Jane] Timken in polling. Timken touted her support on the ground thanks to her time as state party chair. [Mike] Gibbons mentioned how he’d helped Trump’s campaign financially. [Bernie] Moreno noted that his daughter had worked on Trump’s 2020 campaign.”
YOUR MOVE, DEMOCRATS — “Sweeping changes to Georgia elections signed into law,” Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “Gov. Brian Kemp quickly signed a vast rewrite of Georgia’s election rules into law Thursday, imposing voter ID requirements, limiting drop boxes and allowing state takeovers of local elections after last year’s close presidential race. Kemp finalized the bill just over an hour after it cleared the General Assembly, leaving no doubt about its fate amid public pressure against voting restrictions.
“Protesters outside the Capitol said the bill would disenfranchise voters, calling it ‘Jim Crow 2.0.’ State Rep. Park Cannon, D-Atlanta, was arrested by state Troopers after knocking on Kemp’s office door to try to witness the bill signing. He briefly interrupted his prepared remarks as Cannon was forcibly removed from the building by officers.”
A NOT-SO-SWEET 16 AD — FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: Arkansans watching the Sweet 16 basketball game between their Razorbacks and Oral Roberts on Saturday will get a taste of politics during a break in play. The Human Rights Campaign is airing a 30-second ad attacking Gov. ASA HUTCHINSON for signing a bill that bans transgender girls and women from participating on teams consistent with their gender identity. “Trans kids are kids. They don’t deserve this cruelty,” the narrator says, adding that the law — and others like it being pursued by Republicans in other states — will force trans kids into isolation during the pandemic. The ad is the latest example of this issue becoming a bigger flashpoint in national politics. The HRC tells us they plan to continue hammering Hutchinson, who is term-limited in 2022, “in a variety of ways.”
CONGRESS
A GUN VIOLENCE PROPOSAL WITH BIPARTISAN SUPPORT — “Boulder and Atlanta shootings rekindle debate over red-flag gun laws,” WaPo: “On Capitol Hill, lawmakers discussed red-flag laws in a hearing this week on the gun violence epidemic, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said she would soon introduce red-flag legislation. A bipartisan group of lawmakers recently floated a similar proposal, and several state legislatures are weighing whether to pass legislation or expand existing policies.
“Connecticut passed the country’s first red-flag law in 1999, followed by Indiana and several other states. A flurry of similar legislation passed in the wake of the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., where a gunman killed 17 people. Currently, red-flag laws are on the books in 19 states and the District of Columbia.”
RIP, 9/11-STYLE COMMISSION — “House launches wide-ranging review of federal handling of Jan. 6 insurrection,” by Kyle Cheney: “In letters to 16 agencies across the Executive Branch and Congress, the panels asked for all communications sent between agency officials regarding Congress’ Jan. 6 session, when lawmakers certified Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory. The requests demand all relevant documents and messages from Dec. 1, 2020, to Jan. 20, 2021.
“The unusually broad committee review comes as Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been unable to secure bipartisan cooperation to launch an independent commission to review the federal government’s handling of the attack, which left five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer. The Justice Department has since charged more than 300 people with breaching the Capitol, including dozens who they allege conspired to violently halt the Electoral College certification.”
ONLY TOOK TWO DECADES — “House panel votes to repeal 19-year-old Iraq war authorization,” by Andrew Desiderio: “The panel’s action, which sailed through with support from Democrats and Republicans alike, scraps the 2002 authorization for the use of military force (AUMF) against Iraq, which at the time was led by Saddam Hussein. A similar push is already underway in the Senate, where Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Todd Young (R-Ind.) have proposed repealing the 2002 AUMF, in addition to a 1991 measure that also authorized military force in Iraq during the first Gulf War. …
“In response, the White House said Biden supports getting rid of the outdated AUMFs and working with Congress on replacement measures, though talks are in the very early stages.”
GOP ESCALATING IN IA-02 — Senate Minority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL and Sens. TOM COTTON (R-Ark.), JONI ERNST (R-Iowa) and CHUCK GRASSLEY (R-Iowa) put out a letter raising the stakes in the Iowa House seat where Democrats are weighing a serious challenge to the results. The senators called on businesses that stopped donating to or condemned Republicans who tried to overturn the presidential election to do the same for Dems on Iowa. The letter
POLICY CORNER
ANOTHER SIGN OF A BIG TECH CRACKDOWN — “Top Obama lawyer being vetted for antitrust post,” by Leah Nylen and Betsy Woodruff Swan: “One possible job would be heading the Department of Justice’s powerful Antitrust Division. [Jonathan] Sallet’s name has been in the mix for that post for several weeks. … Sallet’s selection for DOJ antitrust chief or FTC chair would signal the Biden administration intends to continue its aggressive pursuit of Google, Facebook and other tech giants.”
— “Biden Administration Ramps Up Debt Relief Program to Help Black Farmers,” NYT: “At the center of this initiative is the Agriculture Department, an agency that has long been derided by Black farmers as the United States’ ‘last plantation.’ Now the department is in the middle of a drastic overhaul, both of its personnel and of policies that it acknowledges have perpetuated inequality in rural America for years. On Thursday, President Biden’s agriculture secretary, Tom Vilsack, said that he would work to root out the vestiges of racism at his agency and to redress ‘systemic discrimination’ that Black farmers had faced.
“Mr. Vilsack said details on how the program would work would be coming soon. The department estimates that it could provide relief for as many as 15,000 loans. … [He added] that the pandemic relief money for the agriculture sector disproportionately benefited white-owned farms and that the provisions in the latest stimulus bill were intended to rebalance that.”

OUTRAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE — Thursday was quite the night on Fox News, with no fewer than three eye-popping moments:
— Trump on the Jan. 6 Capitol rioters, in a live interview with LAURA INGRAHAM: “It was zero threat. Right from the start, it was zero threat. Look, they went in, they shouldn’t have done it. Some of them went in and they’re hugging and kissing the police and the guards. … They’re persecuting a lot of those people, and some of them should be — some things should happen to them. But when I look at antifa … and nothing happens to them whatsoever? Why aren’t they going after antifa?” The clip
— “Tucker & Guest Suggest Right Will Go Full Fascist Because Hunter Biden,” Daily Beast: “During his primetime Fox News program on Thursday evening, Carlson brought up the recent Politico story about the bizarre 2018 case involving President Joe Biden’s son Hunter and his missing gun. …
“‘At some point, people are going to say, “Why should I follow the rules? Why should I be a good citizen if they don’t have to follow the rules?” I mean, things kind of break down at some point, don’t they?’ Carlson asked his guest. ‘They will break down,’ [conservative radio host Jesse] Kelly exclaimed. ‘I have said this before and I’m telling you I’m worried that I’m right. The right is going to pick a fascist within ten to 20 years!’ Carlson interjected: ‘Right. That’s right.’” The clip … Tara and Ben Schreckinger’s original story
— And SEAN HANNITY on SETH MEYERS: “You’re just another limousine liberal socialist hypocritical asshole who does nothing but spew anti-GOP hate and has virtually nothing positive or productive to add to any political dialogue.” The clip
DROWNING IN RED INK — “LA Times Reveals ‘Catastrophic’ $50 Million Revenue Loss in 2020,” TheWrap: “The Los Angeles Times and the San Diego Union-Tribune lost ‘north of $50 million’ in revenue in 2020, company leadership told staffers at an all-hands meeting on Thursday. … The majority of the losses came from print advertising, though digital advertising and print circulation also sustained some losses. …
“The 2020 revenue losses also came as the company hired 163 employees last year … Still, [Chris] Argentieri said the company was able to make a number of financial sacrifices to get through those losses ‘far better.’”

The Morning Briefing: Biden Presser Takeaway—China Is Drooling for an Attack
Top O’ the Briefing
Hoo-Boy, Biden’s “There” Really Isn’t There Anymore
Happy Friday, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. Sunflower seeds are a bit labor intensive for me.
There’s a lot of gloom and doom out there these days, for obvious reasons. I don’t do gloom and doom anymore, so I spend a lot of time attempting to talk my conservative friends off of ledges. Yes, I am well aware that our puppet placeholder president and his commie controllers are waging a feverish offensive against the United States Constitution. I’m not in denial. For the most part, I don’t think they’ll get away with it. Yeah, it’s gonna be ugly for a while, but I think they’ll ultimately fail.
I don’t often waver from that belief but I am willing to explore alternative possibilities from time to time. That’s what I will be doing here today.
I’m going to be referencing Biden’s unmitigated you-know-what show sham press conference but I need to be honest up front here. I didn’t watch it. My colleagues suffered through the thing and chronicled it in a live blog. They are all so good at their jobs that I didn’t see what my misery would add to it, so I went for a bike ride. I need to ride all the miles because I’m tired of my COVID balloon days. I look like I’m in my third trimester right now and beach season is coming up.
I’d like to thank them for their service.
We all knew how it was going to go anyway. In fact, I was able to review the reaction to it sight unseen:
I have since watched a lot of the video and it was worse than I’d imagined. The decline in Biden’s faculties gets worse every day. It’s easy to see why his handlers didn’t want him off leash.
My friends who are feeling that the American apocalypse is nigh can take comfort in the fact that Biden is so awful that this will all be over quickly.
See? Alternative theory.
This drooling moron shouldn’t be in charge of a child’s ten piece jigsaw puzzle, let alone a country. They must be hoarse from cackling in Beijing and Tehran after watching the “leader of the free world” fumble around and say things like “…this makes Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.” In addition to be a an embarrassingly stupid line, it was also a lie. The Democrats are trying to permanently blow up election integrity and bring about one party rule in this country. Our enemies would love that because weak Democrats in the White House are their best friends.
When he wasn’t torturing English, he was forgetting it altogether.
If one of your loved ones was that addled you wouldn’t want him or her to be out in public because you’d want to spare them the embarrassment.
Perhaps the most pathetic part of the charade was the fact that they had to give the Idiot King a picture book to get him through it.
We’ve gotten to the point where I almost feel sorry for the Democrats who have to keep pretending that Joe Biden is functional. Almost.
If 81 million people actually did vote for this guy then the real pandemic in this country is the outbreak of stupid that occurred last November.
We don’t have a vaccine for that yet.

The Morning Dispatch: Biden Meets the Press
Plus: Tech CEOs get another Capitol Hill grilling, and Sen. Chris Coons reports on the conflict in Tigray.
The Dispatch Staff | 2 min ago |
Happy Friday! 68 years ago today, Dr. Jonas Salk announced the success of his groundbreaking polio vaccine. We hope the authors of TMD in 2089 look back on today’s COVID-19 vaccine heroes with the same amount of gratitude.
Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories
- President Biden held his first press conference since taking office yesterday, answering about an hour’s worth of questions from reporters on topics ranging from immigration, to filibuster reform, to foreign policy.
- At least five people in Alabama are dead following a series of tornadoes that whipped across the state. The storms have left more than 45,000 homes without power, and could affect residents in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee as well.
- A report from Arnold Ventures found the murder rate in a sample of 34 U.S. cities jumped nearly 30 percent from 2019 to 2020, the largest year-over-year increase on record. The country is still ahead of previous highs, though: Last year’s homicide rate in the sample cities was 11.4 deaths per 100,000 residents. In 1995 in those same cities, it was 19.4.
- Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp last night signed into law the “Election Integrity Act of 2021,” an omnibus election reform bill that expands in-person early voting, implements a government-issued ID requirement to apply for an absentee ballot, moves up the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot, and limits counties to one ballot drop box per 100,000 residents, among other provisions. It also restructures the state’s board of elections to reduce the secretary of state’s power, and grants the board authority to intervene in election administration on a county level.
- The Washington state Senate voted this week to automatically restore voting rights to those released from prison, including those on parole or probation. Gov. Jay Inslee is expected to sign the bill into law.
- Initial jobless claims decreased by 97,000 week-over-week to 684,000 last week, the Labor Department reported on Thursday. About 18.9 million people were on some form of unemployment insurance during the week ending March 6, compared with 2 million people during the comparable week in 2020.
- The United States confirmed 68,920 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 5.8 percent of the 1,191,457 tests reported coming back positive. An additional 1,259 deaths were attributed to the virus on Thursday, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 546,504. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 32,704 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, and 2,831,442 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered yesterday. 87,343,622 Americans have now received at least one dose.
Biden Holds First Official Presser
Although President Biden has interacted with plenty of reporters since taking office—on Air Force One, walking to and from events, at signing ceremonies in the Oval Office, etc.—he had yet to hold an official press conference as president. That changed Thursday, when Biden faced an hour of questions—on the border crisis, national security, his working relationship with GOP lawmakers, and more—from roughly 30 reporters in the White House’s East Room.
The president did his fair share of dodging and demurring over the course of the afternoon, but he made a fair amount of news as well. Off the bat, he doubled his administration’s initial, meager goal of 100 million COVID-19 doses in 100 days to 200 million by the end of April. (As before, this was in truth less a “goal” than a statement of current trends—getting to 200 million doses by the end of April will require about 2.3 million shots per day, below the 2.5 million per day pace we’ve seen over the last few weeks.) He also said he expects to run for reelection in 2024 with Vice President Kamala Harris by his side. The rest of the presser was entirely devoid of pandemic talk, and focused more on policy than politics.
Reporters homed in on the legislative filibuster early. Though he did not explicitly call for its abolition, Biden said the Senate rule is being “abused in a gigantic way,” and that he prefers a return to the talking filibuster, where senators are required to remain on the floor as they object to legislation. He ducked a question specifically asking whether he wanted the Senate to reduce the current 60-vote threshold to break a filibuster to 51. But prompted by a reporter, Biden, long a fierce defender of the filibuster, agreed that the legislative tool is a “relic of the Jim Crow era.”
“If there’s complete lockdown and chaos as a consequence of the filibuster,” he said, “then we’ll have to go beyond what I’m talking about.”
Big Tech Under the Microscope Once Again
On the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue—at the same time as Biden’s presser—members of Congress were engaged in one of their favorite activities: Yelling at the CEOs of large technology companies.
Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, and Google’s Sundar Pichai have spent a lot of time before congressional committees in recent years, but there’s been little to no movement on actual legislative remedies to the litany of problems with these companies that lawmakers allege. Thursday’s Big Tech hearing—the first since the January 6 attack on the Capitol—indicated that may be changing, and soon.
“You have failed to meaningfully change after your platforms played a role in fomenting insurrection, in abetting the spread of COVID-19, and trampling Americans’ civil rights,” said Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone, chair of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. “Your business model itself has become the problem, and the time for self-regulation is over. It is time we legislate to hold you accountable.”
Both sides of the aisle believe something must be done to take on Big Tech. But—as has become tradition in these hearings—their ideas of “something” are often not only different, but completely incompatible.
Republican critiques yesterday predictably focused on concerns surrounding “censorship” of conservative viewpoints on the tech companies’ platforms. “I’m deeply concerned by your decisions to operate your companies in a vague and biased manner with little to no accountability while using Section 230 as a shield for your actions and their real-world consequences,” said GOP Rep. Bob Latta, ranking member of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. “Your companies have the power to silence the president of the United States, shut off legitimate journalism in Australia, shut down legitimate scientific debate on a variety of issues, dictate which articles or websites are seen by Americans when they search the internet.”
Readout on Sen. Coons’ Trip to Ethiopia
Delaware Sen. Chris Coons returned home from his trip to Addis Ababa this week following a “constructive” two-day deliberation with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior government leaders. Filling a role typically reserved for State Department officials, Coons—a close friend of President Biden—reported that he impressed upon Abiy the gravity of the ongoing humanitarian crisis and alleged human rights violations unfolding in the northern state of Tigray.
“Engagement” was the theme of the press readout, as Coons doubled down on the Biden administration’s promise to reprioritize the African continent through proactive diplomacy and humanitarian aid. But the on-the-ground impact of this rhetoric remains to be seen, as 2021’s deadliest conflict rages on.
Coons told reporters that while Abiy vowed to hold perpetrators of mass civilian violence accountable, the prime minister—and 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner—refused to commit to a ceasefire. Abiy also rejected the U.S.’ categorization of the war as an ethnic conflict.
Worth Your Time
- While setting personal goals can lead to increased happiness, making those goals too lofty may have the opposite effect. Rather than “shooting for the moon,” Arthur Brooks argues in his latest Atlantic column, taking a more balanced, measured approach will lead to greater success. “Dream of the person you want to be—not of how rich or powerful or famous that future self is, but about the life you will lead and work you will do to serve and enrich others maximally, leaving behind a world that is better than you found it.”
- Just when you thought the Suez Canal fiasco was unsolvable, America’s youth have swept in to solve the problem. Dan Kois over at Slate asked a range of kids—aged four to 15—how they would get the vessel unstuck. Theo, 6, thinks they should just “get giant oars and row it.” Nina, 8, has an even simpler solution: “They should move the sand.”

- Thomas Joscelyn’s latest Vital Interests (🔒) warns of the growing partnership between China and Russia. The United States “should focus on protecting already existing democracies from the combined CCP-Kremlin threat,” he writes. “However, that doesn’t mean the Biden administration should back away from its criticisms, which are necessary to draw a sharp comparison between the American-led West and the world Moscow and Beijing want to create.”
- David’s Thursday French Press (🔒) breaks down the potential Second Amendment clash coming to the Supreme Court, and how most gun control measures currently in place exist outside of judicial review. “The Supreme Court has not opined on a host of relevant firearms restrictions,” he writes. “There are no decisions about assault weapons bans or bans on high-capacity magazines. There are no decisions on the right to carry a weapon outside the home. Thus, the vast, vast majority of gun regulations in your state exist outside of Supreme Court oversight (so far) and are matters of state law or lower-court rulings.”

An interview with Richard Ebright: The WHO investigation members were ‘participants in disinformation’
Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:17 AM PDT Molecular biologist Dr. Richard H. Ebright, PhD is one of the twenty six world scientists who signed the Open Letter: “Call for a Full and Unrestricted International Forensic Investigation into the Origins of COVID-19”. A document released last March 4 by the Wall Street Journal and Le Monde that reignited the debate over the pandemic’s origin after the WHO-convened mission to Wuhan. Article by Jorge Casesmeiro Roger from Independent Science News. Board of Governors Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Rutgers University, Dr. Richard H. Ebright, PhD, is also Laboratory Director at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology and serves as project leader on two National Institutes of Health research grants. Dr. Richard Ebright received his AB in Biology and his PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Harvard University. He has more than one hundred sixty publications and more than forty issued and pending patents. He is member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Association for Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Dr. Ebright is a member of the Institutional Biosafety Committee of Rutgers University and the Antimicrobial Resistance Committee of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He is also been a member of the Working Group on Pathogen Security of the state of New Jersey, and the Controlling Dangerous Pathogens Project of the Center for International Security Studies. He was a founding member of the Cambridge Working Group, which advocated for biosafety, biosecurity, and risk-benefit reviews for gain-of-function research on potential pandemic pathogens. Dr. Ebright, you are one of the 26 scientific signers of the Open Letter that stopped the release of the WHO-convened mission Interim Report and has reopened the CoV-2 origin debate. Do you think the final report of this WHO/China joint team is going to shut down COVID origin controversy? No. The Open Letter explains in detail the structural and functional limitations of the WHO-China Wuhan collaborative team: exclusive Chinese field work, lack of complete access to lab installations or databases, consensus process in report making… A credible investigation would have had Terms of Reference that: 1) Acknowledged the possibility of laboratory origin, 2) Ensured access of investigators to records, samples, personnel, and facilities at the Wuhan laboratories that handle bat SARS-related coronaviruses, 3) Enabled collection of evidence, not mere meet-and-greet photo-ops, 4) Authorized an investigation of months, not mere days. And 5) A credible investigation also would have had conflict-of-interest-free investigators, not persons who were subjects of the research and/or closely associated with subjects of the investigation. You have said several times that this WHO mission was literally “a charade”. Yes, its members were willing –and, in at least one case, enthusiastic– participants in disinformation. The pre-negotiated “Terms of Reference” for the WHO study did not even acknowledge the possibility of a laboratory origin of the virus and did not even mention the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), the Wuhan Center for Disease Control (CDC) or the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products. Regarding the inspection personnel, at least one member of the WHO mission team, Ecohealth Alliance President Dr. Peter Daszak, seems to have conflicts of interest that should have disqualified him from being part of an investigation of the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yes. Daszak was the contractor who funded the laboratory at WIV that potentially was the source of the virus (with subcontracts from $200 million from the US Department of State and $7 million from the US National Institutes of Health), and he was a collaborator and co-author on research projects at the laboratory. The Open Letter also lists the elements of “What a full investigation should look like”. So again, Dr. Ebright, if you where in charge of a forensic team to investigate in Wuhan the origins of the pandemic: what would you like to see first? What kind of questions would you ask and to who? A credible forensic investigation would require access to records, samples, personnel, and facilities at WIV, the Wuhan CDC and the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products. It would entail inspection of electronic and paper records, inspection of freezer and refrigerator samples, environmental sampling of facilities, and confidential interviews with personnel–including previous and current construction, maintenance, janitorial, disposal, security, animal-facility, laboratory, and administrative personnel. Whenever asked if this virus could have leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, your answer has been: “Yes (…) This cannot and should not be dismissed”. A study on COVID origin of Dr. Steven Quay, another signer of the Open Letter, calculates the lab hypotheses to be a 99.8% probability. At this point in time, there is no secure basis to assign relative probabilities to the natural-accident hypothesis and the laboratory-accident hypothesis. But given the fact that lab leak is a possibility, what chance do you give for a natural zoonotic origin of this pandemic? At this point in time, all scientific data related to the genome sequence of SARS-CoV-2 and the epidemiology of COVID-19 are equally consistent with a natural-accident origin or a laboratory-accident origin. What would you say to the scientist who declined to comment on the Open Letter because it does not come from virologists? The claim is unsound. There were virologists among the signers of the Open Letter. There even were coronavirologists among the signers of the Open Letter. More important, COVID-19 affects every person on the planet. Not just virologists. Dr. Ebright, you are a microbiologist and molecular biologist, what light can you shed on this matter from your fields of expertise? Microbiologists and molecular biologists are as qualified as virologists to assess the relevant science and science policies. Virology is a subset, not a superset, of microbiology and molecular biology. The sequencing, sequence analysis, cell culture, animal-infection studies, and other laboratory procedures used by virologists are not materially different from the procedures used by other microbiologists and molecular biologists. I guess that is why the second point of the Open Letter research proposal is precisely to create a multidisciplinary team. It is crucial that any team reviewing the issues include not only research scientists, but also biosafety, biosecurity, and science policy specialists. What biological evidence regarding the structure and behaviour of SARS-CoV-2 points to a pure zoonosis? And what to the lab theory? The genome sequence of the outbreak virus indicates that its progenitor was either the horseshoe-bat coronavirus RaTG13, or a closely related bat coronavirus. RaTG13 was collected by Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2013 from a horseshoe-bat colony in a mine in Yunnan province, where miners had died from a SARS-like pneumonia in 2012, was partly sequenced by WIV in 2013-2016, was fully sequenced by WIV in 2018-2019, and was published by WIV in 2020. Bat coronaviruses are present in nature in multiple parts of China. Therefore, the first human infection could have occurred as a natural accident, with a virus passing from a bat to a human, possibly through another animal. There is clear precedent for this. The first entry of the SARS virus into the human population occurred as a natural accident in a rural part of Guangdong province in 2002. But bat coronaviruses are also collected and studied by laboratories in multiple parts of China, including the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Therefore, the first human infection also could have occurred as a laboratory accident, with a virus accidentally infecting a field collection staffer, a field survey staffer, or a laboratory staffer, followed by transmission from the staffer to the public. There also is clear precedent for this. The second, third, fourth and fifth entries of the SARS virus into human populations occurred as a laboratory accident in Singapore in 2003, a laboratory accident in Taipei in 2003, and two separate laboratory accidents in Beijing in 2004. So for you there is still a fifty-fifty chance? At this point in time, there is no secure basis to assign relative probabilities to the natural-accident hypothesis and the laboratory-accident hypothesis. Nevertheless, there are three lines of circumstantial evidence that are worth noting. Proceed, Doctor. First, the outbreak occurred in Wuhan, a city of 11 million persons that does not contain horseshoe-bat colonies, that is tens of kilometers Another one. Second, the outbreak occurred in Wuhan, on the doorstep of the laboratory that conducts the world’s largest research project on horseshoe bat viruses, that has the world’s largest collection of horseshoe-bat viruses, and that possessed and worked with the world’s closest sequenced relative of the outbreak virus. The laboratory actively searched for new horseshoe-bat viruses in horseshoe-bat colonies in caves in remote rural areas in Yunnan province, brought those new horseshoe-bat viruses to Wuhan, and then mass-produced, genetically manipulated, and studied those new horseshoe-bat viruses, year-round, inside Wuhan. A remarkable coincidence. The last one? Third, the bat-SARS-related-coronavirus projects at the Wuhan Institute of Virology used personal protective equipment (usually just gloves; sometimes not even gloves) and biosafety standards (usually just biosafety level 2) that would pose very high risk of infection of field-collection, field-survey, or laboratory staff upon contact with a virus having the transmission properties of SARS-CoV-2. The lab leak hypotheses, as raised in the Open Letter, should address four possible scenarios that do not imply genetic manipulation in a Gain-of-Function (GoF) experiment. But this chance cannot be excluded. Dr. Ebright, when the pandemic started you declared: “There’s absolutely nothing in the genome sequence of this virus that indicates the virus was engineered”. Would you reassert this today? The genome sequence of this virus shows no signatures of human manipulation. But Dr. Ralph Baric, who is considered the US leading expert in coronavirus, so he probably is the world one, says that is possible to engineer a virus in a lab without leaving a trace of the manipulation. The fact that the genome sequence of this virus shows no signatures of human manipulation rules out the kinds of gain-of-function (GoF) research that leave signatures. But this does not rule out kinds of GoF research that do not leave signatures. The chance that CoV-2 is a GoF virus does not imply that the leak could have occurred during a bioweapons program. Open Letter signatories do not address this scenario, that you firmly exclude. Be that as it may, Dr. Ebright, as a longstanding opponent of biological weapons proliferation (Nature: Jan. 24/02 & Jan. 15/12) and Founding Member of the Harvard “Cambridge Working Group Consensus Statement on the Creation of Potential Pandemic Pathogens (PPPs)”, does the current crisis demand a new debate and moratorium on these highly risky experiments, and this these time with a more international engagement? Yes. What went wrong for the Cambridge Working Group thesis during the 2014-2016 USA official moratorium and deliberative process on Gain-of-Function Research of Concern (GoFRoC)? The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have systematically thwarted efforts by the White House, the Congress, scientists, and science policy specialists to regulate GoF research of concern and even to require risk-benefit review for projects involving GoF research of concern. In 2014, the Obama White House implemented a “Pause” in federal funding for GoF research of concern. However, the document announcing the Pause stated in a footnote that: “An exception from pause may be obtained if head of funding agency determines research is urgently necessary to protect public health or national security”. Unfortunately, the NIAID Director and the NIH Director exploited this loophole to issue exemptions to projects subject to the Pause –preposterously asserting the exempted research was “urgently necessary to protect public health or national security”– thereby nullifying the Pause. In 2017, the Trump Administration announced a Potential Pandemic Pathogens Control and Oversight (P3CO) Framework that implemented a requirement for risk-benefit review of GoF research of concern. However, the P3CO Framework relies on the funding agency to flag and forward proposals for risk-benefit review. Unfortunately, the NIAID Director and the NIH Director have declined to flag and forward proposals for risk-benefit review, thereby nullifying the P3CO Framework. Proponents of GoF experiments with PPPs have won all the debates of the last decade. But I wonder why some of its most prestigious critics are keeping now such a low profile, when not a thunderous silence. And I am thinking of one of the leading organizers of the Cambridge Working Group: the Harvard epidemiologist Dr. Marc Lipsitch, who in 2018 was still warning that influenza GoF studies could provoke a pandemic on a scale never seen before. The silence of some former leaders of the Cambridge Working Group has been disappointing. It was, by the way, reading the cited Dr. Lipsitch paper that I came to know that perhaps the first experimental effort to create a PPP in a lab was the 2005 study titled: “Characterization of the reconstructed 1918 Spanish influenza pandemic virus”. Dr. Lipsitch wondered about it: “Whether it was wise to construct a virus that was historically associated with the worst pandemic in modern history”. Do you remember this concrete GoF study? Are you aware, fifteen years after, of any positive outcome of it? In conclusion, Dr. Ebright: was it wise to do it? I consistently have stated that: “This was research that should not have been performed” (NYT: Oct. 05/05 & Jan. 29/06). And no, the work has not yielded information useful for preventing pandemics or responding to pandemics. Drs. Imperiale and Casadevall, both Cambridge Work Group Board Members, echoed last summer: “Most experts who have been studying and discussing preparedness agree that the source of the pathogen does not significantly change the nature of the response. Is that right, Dr. Ebright, or maybe the outcome of knowing CoV-2 origin could have saved lives? Understanding the origin of SARS-CoV-2 is not crucial for responding to the present pandemic. But it is crucial –absolutely crucial– for preventing future pandemics. Regarding prevention, it was precisely Dr. Peter Daszak, with a renewed grant from the NIH, now to target deadly viruses in South Asia, who stated in August 2020: “We’re going to work in remote parts of Malaysia and Thailand to get to the front line of where the next pandemic is going to start”. Now, though Dr. Daszak is not openly cited in the March 4 Open Letter, he is clearly the WHO team member with a more biased vision and unresolved conflict of interest when it comes to inspecting a possible leak in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. So going back: if the origin of Covid-19 was a lab accident, GoF, or in between, this would change the narrative of the whole pandemic, and so the measures that should be taken to prevent another one: like, for instance, keeping crackpot scientists far away from deadly viruses. Am I wrong? You are not wrong. Georgia Representative Park Cannon’s arrest labeled ‘racist’ by the woke
Posted: 26 Mar 2021 04:17 AM PDT Everything is racist in the eyes of the “woke.” That’s the takeaway from dozens of major events that have taken place in the past couple of years. Whenever a person of color is treated in, well, any way at all, it is always racism that causes it based on progressive doctrine. Personal responsibility is the least woke thing imaginable. The latest episode of “Was It Racist” took place yesterday as Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a controversial election integrity bill into law. State Representative Park Cannon wanted to unlawfully enter the chambers, which were guarded by law enforcement. They were cordial but firm in their refusal to let her enter the chamber during a closed session, but she persisted. As soon as she pushed forward to knock on the door, they took her into custody.
Her supporters on the scene were quite perturbed. One asked how the Governor has more power than a Representative. But she was well aware that what she was doing was unlawful, and some have speculated she intended to get arrested to give her more publicity. Woke Twitter responded accordingly. According to The Post Millennial: According to Georgia State Patrol, representative Cannon was arrested for refusing orders that required her to stop knocking on the Governor’s door. “She was advised that she was disturbing what was going on inside and if she did not stop, she would be placed under arrest,” said GSP spokesman Lt. W. Mark Riley. “Rep. Cannon refused to stop knocking on the door.” Court Documents indicate that Cannon was charged with “knowingly and intentionally” knocking on the governor’s door during a bill signing as well as repeatedly stomping on and officer’s foot. Progressive activist Ben O’Keefe thought law enforcement was too aggressive.
Senator Jon Ossoff chimed in. He never misses an opportunity to chime in.
CNN’s Don Lemon framed it as a voter suppression bill.
Civil rights attorney Nora Benavidez invoked “Jim Crow” in describing the bill.
Democratic candidate Nabilah Islam went straight for the “racism” question.
Cannon was released a few hours later on bond.
One can question the decision to arrest her, but let’s be very clear that there are zero indications that race played any role in the decision. Would a white male Representative have been arrested for the exact same actions? Based on the resolute manner the decision to arrest her was made, it seems clear that the preestablished trigger was an attempt to breach the chambers, in this case by knocking on the door against instructions from law enforcement. While there’s no way to test the theory, it seems obvious that a white male would have suffered the same fate. When everything is painted as being racist, the argument loses its prominence. There is real racism in America, but playing the race card constantly prevents legitimate claims from being seen. ‘The Purge’ by Big Tech targets conservatives, including usJust when we thought the Covid-19 lockdowns were ending and our ability to stay afloat was improving, censorship reared its ugly head. For the last few months, NOQ Report has appealed to our readers for assistance in staying afloat through Covid-19 lockdowns. Dave Workman to gun owners: ‘Get up off the couch’ if you want to save the Second Amendment
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:24 PM PDT
The Second Amendment is under attack. This isn’t a new development; for the last two decades it has been seriously targeted by many in the Democratic Party and even a few in the Republican Party. But in recent years, the calls for hardcore gun control laws have been rising. Now that Democrats have control of the House, Senate, and White House, many assume the filibuster, judiciary, and state laws are the only things standing in the way of federal gun control beyond what we see today. There’s another important impediment to gun control that doesn’t get nearly enough attention. As Second Amendment Foundation member and prolific firearm journalist Dave Workman pointed out, it really does fall on us in the grassroots to make certain our rights are protected. In the latest episode of NOQ Report, he makes the plea to gun owners and gives us a ton of information about what we need to do to get involved and stay involved. Thankfully, there are a whole lot more gunowners today than there were a year ago. It may be one of the few silver linings to the Covid-19 pandemic. A concerned population wants to have the power to defend itself if things get crazy and there’s nothing better than a firearm to allow us to take control of situations before they go too far south. As our EIC has speculated before, going after our guns is only part of the reason Democrats will move to abolish the filibuster. They need to pass H.R. 1, the voter fraud enabling legislation. To do so, they’ll need to filibuster out of their way. But they cannot remove the filibuster for the sake of that bill or their motives will be too obvious. They need a more popular reason to do so and gun control is likely their gateway to set in motion the process of establishing permanent single-party rule in America. How do they get gun control to be popular? Through mass shootings, which is why this particular interview was so timely. The two mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder that left 18 people dead may be enough to push the Democrats’ legislation forward, as Workman noted on AmmoLand: Various members of Congress have been tossing ideas around, including calls for a national waiting period on firearms sales. Biden wants Senate action on two House measures, H.R. 8 and H.R. 1446, which deal with background checks. He has also revived his call for a ban on so-called “assault weapons” following the Colorado shooting. Standing in the way could be Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin, a pro-gun lawmaker from West Virginia. Vanity Fair is reporting that Manchin is not interested in supporting either House measure. He was quoted by the magazine stating, “I come from a gun culture. I’m a law-abiding gun owner.” However, waiting period legislation could gain momentum because Long bought his gun on the same day he allegedly committed the crimes. In Colorado, the accused killer there bought his gun a week prior to the Monday shooting. As earlier reported, the Washington Post quoted Georgia State Rep. David Wilkerson observing, “I think a waiting period just makes sense.” When the Portland, Oregonian picked up the story, it’s headline reflected a possible push for a national wait: “Atlanta shootings could renew push for gun waiting periods.” It’s up to patriotic Americans to get off their couches and make our voiced heard. That means calling on our representatives. That means rallies and protests. It means not waiting around for some Second Amendment saviors to pop up and do the work for us. Our freedoms are ours to protect. We cannot rely on the small group of passionate activists to do all the heavy lifting. In this episode, The Two Mikes broke down important news for the week as well. As the push for new gun laws continues, we need true action by patriots to keep our Second Amendment rights intact. If we wait around, we may end up like so many other nations that have lost their gun rights already. Watch the show on Rumble or Locals, or listen to it on Apple Podcasts.

9 highlights from Senate hearing on federal takeover of elections
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:57 PM PDT Lawmakers listened to ominous references to the South’s Jim Crow era and Maoist China as the Senate held its first hearing on Democrats’ legislation to nationalize elections while eliminating voter ID and most other state election safeguards. Article by Fred Lucas from Daily Signal. “This bill has rightly been called the Corrupt Politicians Act because it is designed to keep corrupt politicians in office,” Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said as he denounced the legislation. The hearing Wednesday also saw the return of former Attorney General Eric Holder to Capitol Hill to advocate passage of Democrats’ bill, and in particular changing how congressional districts are redrawn. Holder insisted that voter fraud “simply doesn’t exist.” And Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded at one point: “I would like to ask my Republican colleagues, why are you so afraid of democracy?” The bill also would legalize the controversial practice of ballot harvesting across the country; establish same-day voter registration; create massive public financing for federal campaigns; make the Federal Election Commission more partisan; and transfer state legislatures’ authority to draw congressional districts to unelected bureaucrats. Here are nine highlights from the Senate Rules and Administration Committee’s hearing. 1. Mao and MaduroSen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., compared congressional Democrats’ bill to the Nicolas Maduro regime in Venezuela and Mao Zedong in China, saying they would change the rules to cling to power. “This bill, by eliminating commonsense security measures for voting, by bypassing elected state representatives,” Hagerty said, “is really a power grab by those politicians that are currently in power, that wrote this bill to use their power—even though it’s so thin, a 50-50 Senate—to use their power to fundamentally change the rules of the game so they stay in power permanently.” West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner agreed with Hagerty, saying, “That’s what it would appear to be, Senator.” Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita added of the Democrats: “Frankly, I have never seen a group of people complain so much after winning.” Democrats hold a technical majority because of Vice President Kamala Harris’ power, as president of the Senate, to cast tie-breaking votes. The chamber is split between 50 Republicans and 50 senators in the Democratic caucus, which includes two independents. The bill narrowly passed the House three weeks ago by a vote of 220-210. After the November elections, Democrats’ majority in the House has narrowed to eight seats. Critics argue that the legislation, which Democrats call the For the People Act, would give that political party a permanent majority in both congressional chambers and the White House. Democrats designed the bill to give them a bigger majority, Hagerty said. “Doesn’t using government power to ensure you stay in power sound more like the Maduro regime or Chairman Mao’s regime, rather than something that happens here in the United States?” the Tennessee Republican asked. Rokita concurred, saying that Americans see through what Democrats are attempting with the bill. He drew a contrast between Congress and state legislatures. “If you look at these state legislatures and whether the bills they are proposing are good or bad or ugly or what, they are responding to their constituents. They are responding to the American people,” Rokita said. “They are closer, frankly, to the American people than the federal government is.” Hagerty noted that the bill would dismantle most state voter identification laws aimed at preventing election fraud. “Is requiring a voter to present a reliable form of identification an important method of determining a voter is who that voter claims to be, not trying to impersonate someone else?” the senator asked. Rokita agreed, explaining:
2. Eric Holder: Voter Fraud ‘Simply Doesn’t Exist’Holder, who clashed with congressional Republicans as President Barack Obama’s attorney general for seven years, said that just as Reconstruction after the Civil War was followed by the Jim Crow era, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was followed by efforts in some states to restrict voting for minorities. “There is a large and powerful faction in this country intent on retaining power, and who will bend or break the rules of our democracy in order to do so,” Holder testified, adding:
Holder identified an “undemocratic trinity” of issues as “gerrymandering, voter suppression, [and] dark money.” He said Democrats’ bill would “get rid of all of them at once.” “The For the People Act is a necessary and appropriate response to both the erosion of voting rights and the advancement of special interests,” Holder testified. He later added: “This bill would not favor either party. To the contrary, it would create a level playing field for the American people.” Early in the hearing, however, the former attorney general had qualified his statement, asserting that there is no “widespread or systemic” voter fraud. He later was more firm, saying voter fraud doesn’t exist. “We keep hearing this cry about voter fraud,” Holder said. “It simply doesn’t exist. Simply because you say it doesn’t mean it exists.” More than 1,300 proven instances of voter fraud have occurred since the 1980s, according to The Heritage Foundation’s voter fraud database. The database includes 1,134 criminal convictions; 48 civil penalties; 21 judicial findings; and 17 other official findings. It also includes 97 diversion programs, which in a criminal case is when a judge directs a defendant into a pretrial diversion program, or he stays or defers adjudication with the understanding that the conviction will be cleared upon completion of the program. 3. Schumer, McConnell, and ‘Shame’Demonstrating the significance of the legislation, Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., each dropped by the opening of the hearing to deliver their own remarks. Schumer sounded like a firebrand, while McConnell sounded significantly more reserved. “Today, now, in the 21st century, there is a concerted nationwide effort to limit the right of American citizens to vote and to truly have a voice in their own government,” Schumer said. “Republican state legislatures have seized on the former president’s big lie that the election was stolen and introduced more than 250 bills in 43 states aimed at tightening voting rules under the guise of election integrity.” Schumer was referring to former President Donald Trump, who claimed that the 2020 election was stolen from him through election irregularities and fraud. The New York Democrat cited proposals in Iowa, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Georgia that he characterized as voter suppression. “This is one of the most despicable things I’ve seen in all my years. Shame, shame, shame,” the majority leader said, later adding:
McConnell dismissed Schumer’s claim of a vast voter suppression effort. “The turnout in 2020 was up 7%. The turnout in the 2020 election was the highest since 1900,” he said. “States are not engaging in trying to suppress voters whatsoever.” McConnell said Democrats’ legislation would create an “implementation nightmare” for local election officials. “This legislation would forcibly rewrite election laws in all 50 states from here in Washington,” McConnell said, adding:
Responding to Schumer’s pronouncement of “shame” on Republicans, McConnell noted that eliminating one seat on the six-seat Federal Election Commission, as Democrats propose, would turn it into a partisan body for a president’s party to use against the party out of power. The FEC currently has three Republicans and three Democrats. “If anybody ought to be feeling any shame around here, it’s turning the FEC into a partisan prosecutor, the majority controlled by the president’s party, to harass and intimidate the other side,” the Kentucky Republican said. “That’s what you ought to be ashamed about.” 4. Ted Cruz: ‘Keep Corrupt Politicians in Office’Cruz called the legislation a “brazen and shameless power grab by Democrats.” He referred to it as the “Corrupt Politicians Act,” a phrase also popular on Twitter. “Under this bill, there is automatic registration of anybody, if you get a driver’s license, if you get a welfare payment, if you get an unemployment payment, if you attend a public university,” Cruz said. “Everyone knows there are millions of illegal aliens who have driver’s licenses, who are getting welfare benefits, who attend public universities. This bill is designed to register everyone of those illegal aliens.” The Texas Republican asked Rokita, the Indiana attorney general, about the impact of “automatically registering millions of illegal aliens to vote.” “Despite the cost and everything in the system, it would dilute the votes of every citizen who is supposed to be voting,” Rokita responded. “So they want more turnout and more people to participate. And you cannot vote in this country unless you are a United States citizen in a federal election.” Cruz added that it’s not just illegal immigrants who would be signed up to vote. “This bill is designed to get criminals to vote. A great many states across this country prohibit felons from voting,” Cruz said. “This bill strikes down all those laws. This bill says if you are a murderer, if you are a rapist, if you are a child molester, we the Democrats want you voting.” Cruz added of the current majority party: “They understand that criminals and illegal aliens are much more likely to vote for Democrats.” 5. Opposition to Voter ID Is ‘Racist’During the exchange with Cruz, Rokita noted the effectiveness of Indiana’s voter ID law and said Indiana is a national model. “In Indiana, we had the country’s first photo ID law; voter turnout went up, and it went up because more people had confidence in the process,” Rokita said. “In fact, when others on this panel and other places say that a certain subset of our country or our electorate can’t vote with photo ID, that’s really a racist statement.” Cruz said that a former liberal Supreme Court justice, John Paul Stevens, wrote the high court’s 6-3 opinion upholding Indiana’s voter ID law. The Carter-Baker commission report on election reform also backed voter ID. Cruz noted that the Carter-Baker commission warned that ballot harvesting was a major problem in combating voter fraud. “What do the Democrats do? Look at the Carter-Baker [report], say, ‘Where do we get fraud? Let’s do more of that,’” he said. “This bill has rightly been called the Corrupt Politicians Act,” Cruz said, “because it is designed to keep corrupt politicians in office, and everyone supporting it should be ashamed.” 6. Taxpayer Funding for Politicians?Although the public campaign financing portion of the bill, numbered as S 1, provides $6 in government funds to federal candidates for every $1 raised in private donations, some supporters insist that money wouldn’t be taxpayer money. Fred Wertheimer, director of Democracy 21, a group that advocates campaign finance restrictions, backed the campaign finance provision in the bill. “The campaign finance system today is flooded with funds coming from influence-seeking millionaires, billionaires, lobbyists, bundlers, dark money groups, super PACs, special interest PACs,” Wertheimer, a former president of the liberal advocacy group Common Cause, told the Senate committee. “S 1 addresses this problem by providing an alternative financing system that gives candidates the option to finance their campaigns through small contributions matched at a 6-1 ratio,” he said. Wertheimer said this would be different from the matching funds that are available to presidential candidates. “The presidential system was financed with tax revenues,” he said. “The new system prohibits the use of tax revenues to finance the matching funds. The system would be financed entirely by a small surcharge on penalties and settlements paid to the government by corporations, corporate executives, and wealthy tax cheats.” Democrats’ legislation and their spin is cynical, argued Bradley Smith, chairman of the Institute for Free Speech, which opposes restrictions on campaign spending. “The cynicism in the For the Politicians Act is highlighted by two provisions. The first is the point noted by Mr. Wertheimer that the bill claims to not use taxpayer money to fund elections,” said Smith, a former FEC chairman, adding:
7. ‘Absolutely Eliminate’Although the legislation would expand same-day voter registration and allow felon voting and other procedures that Democrats contend enfranchise more voters, some voters would lose access, Warner, West Virginia’s secretary of state, told the Senate panel. Sen. Shelley Capito, R-W.Va., asked the top election official of her state about a mobile voting app designed for overseas service members and those with disabilities. “I’ve heard from our deaf and blind community in West Virginia about what S 1 would do to prevent them from using this tremendous accessibility option that you’ve pioneered in the state of West Virginia,” Capito said. “So, if you could share your concerns about the impact this bill would have on military voters and voters with disabilities.” Warner said the legislation would “absolutely eliminate the opportunity [to vote] for military people overseas, who are voters overseas, and for voters with certain disabilities, especially the blind community and folks who are physically not able to get to the polling locations.” The West Virginia election official added:
Capito responded: “This eliminated military [deployed] out of our country and certain folks with disabilities in our state to be able to vote in the most convenient and technology-tested way.” 8. Cleaning Voter Rolls and SuppressionEarly in the hearing, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., the ranking member of the Rules and Administration Committee, asked Michael Waldman, president of the Brennan Center for Justice, whether state laws using Social Security information to identify dead people would be considered voter suppression. “We look at legislation across the country, we look to see whether the measure is potentially restricting or suppressing,” Waldman said. Blunt followed up: “Just on the question I asked, why would that bill, removing dead people from the voter rolls based on Social Security information, be voter suppression?” Waldman replied: “There are frequently errors that are used in Social Security.” But Blunt noted a contradiction in Waldman’s support of Democrats’ legislation. “So your view would be, the federal government is not capable of telling the state which Social Security recipients died and no longer get a check,” Blunt said. “So we should turn the entire election over to a federal structure? I just don’t agree.” Senate Rules Chairwoman Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., clashed with Blunt. “Can we allow the witness to answer the question?” Klobuchar asked. After some back and forth, Blunt said: “No, the witness did answer the question. … Senator, the witness answered the question by saying the federal government often is in error in giving information to the states. That was the answer to the question.” 9. ‘Remember the Sabbath’During Schumer’s remarks, he sharply criticized the Georgia Legislature for eliminating early voting on Sunday. “The most reprehensible effort of all might be found in Georgia, where Republicans recently passed a bill to eliminate early voting on Sunday—on Sunday—the day when many churchgoing African Americans participate in voter drives known as Souls to the Polls,” the Senate majority leader said. “What an astonishing coincidence. I’d like one of the Republican members on this committee to give us a plain sense justification for that restriction,” Schumer said, adding: “Monday through Saturday, legitimate voters show up, but Sunday is voter fraud day. Give me a break.” Later in the hearing, Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., offered a justification for not allowing voting on Sunday. “I cannot speak for Georgia, but I can speak for Mississippi on why we would never do that on a Sunday or hold an election on a Sunday,” Hyde-Smith said, before holding up a dollar bill. She said, referring to the national motto:

Joe Biden said ‘nothing has changed’ at the border. This is a bald-faced lie.
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PDT Things have changed. They’ve been changing drastically since moments after Joe Biden was inaugurated. Anyone claiming nothing has changed at the border is either outright lying or completely ignorant of the situation. One such person making that claim is Biden himself, as he said during today’s scripted press conference. He threw out statistics to back his claim. But those statistics do not come close to telling the real story at the border. Whether he believed it when he read the words “nothing has changed” or not is irrelevant. It reissues the narrative the White House has been making for a week, the notion that the border crisis was somehow inherited from the previous administration. But as Representative Andy Biggs pointed out a week after Biden took office, things have definitely changed.
Don’t be fooled by Biden’s teleprompter reading or the narrative coming out of the White House. They are well aware that this nation is being overrun at the southern border, but they have an agenda and mitigating bad optics is their top priority. If it wasn’t, they would let the press see what’s happening. They would stop lying about the situation. And most importantly, Biden wouldn’t be dancing around the issue with trumped up stats that are intended to make us believe this was all his predecessor’s fault. Biggs is absolutely correct. The construction of the border wall acted as a major obstacle for those wanting to cross over illegally. What makes it worse is knowing that it was already paid for in full. There is nothing legitimate prompting the Biden administration from allowing construction to continue other than good ol’ fashioned virtue signaling. In other words, the wall is being halted for the sake of “woke” credibility. Here’s how he reacted to the planted question during today’s “press conference”: YAMICHE ALCINDOR: Mr. President. You said over and over again that immigrants shouldn’t come to this country right now, this isn’t the time to come. That message is not being perceived. Instead, the perception of you that got you elected as a moral, decent man is the reason why a lot of immigrants are coming to the country and entrusting you with unaccompanied minors. How do you resolve that tension? And how are you choosing which families can stay and which can go, given the fact even though with title 42, there are families staying? And there a timeline when we won’t be seeing these overcrowded facilities run by CPB when it comes to unaccompanied minors? JOE BIDEN: Look, I guess I should be flattered people are coming because I’m the nice guy. That’s the reason why it’s happening, that I’m a decent man or however it’s phrased, that’s why they’re coming because, you know, Biden is a good guy. The truth of the matter is, nothing has changed. As many people came, 28% increase in children to the border in my administration, 31% in the last year in 2019 before the pandemic in the Trump administration. It happens every single solitary year. There is a significant increase in the number of people coming to the border in the winter months of January, February, March. It happens every year. In addition to that, there is — and by the way, does anybody suggest that there was a 31% increase under Trump because he was a nice guy and he was doing good things at the border? That’s not the reason they’re coming. The reason they’re coming is that it’s the time they can travel with the least likelihood of dying on the way because of the heat in the desert, number one. Number two, they’re coming because of the circumstances in the country. The way to deal with this problem — and I started to deal with it back when I was united states senator — I mean vice president for putting together a bipartisan plan for over $700 million to do root causes of why people are leaving. What did Trump do? He eliminated that funding. He didn’t use it. He didn’t do it. And in addition to that, what he did, he dismantled all of the elements that exist to deal with what had been a problem and has been continuing to be a problem for a long time. He, in fact, shut down the number of beds available. He did not fund AHHS to get people to get the chirp out of those border patrol facilities where they should not be. They’re not supposed more than a few days, a little while. But he dismantled all of that. What we’re doing now is attempting to rebuild, rebuild the system that can accommodate what is happening today and I would like to think it’s because I’m a nice guy but it’s not. It’s because of what’s happening every year. Let me say one other thing on this, if you take a look at the number of people coming, the vast majority — the overwhelming majority of people coming to the border across it are being sent back. Are being sent back. Thousands, tens of thousands of people who are over 18 years of age, and single people, one at a time coming, had been sent back, sent home. This is all about damage control, but again it’s not about the damage to the nation. It’s about damage to the sentiment towards his administration. Even friendly progressive media personalities are starting to ask “tough” questions, though they’re still softballs compared to what they were asking about the Trump administration. It’s a disingenuous display of pretending to be journalists while quietly trying to remain hyper-partisans. When Joe Biden says nothing has changed at the border, he’s either lying or he’s clueless. As easy as it may be to highlight his fading cognitive abilities, we have to lean towards bald-faced lie on this particular issue. Kristi Noem undermines state efforts to combat transgenderism in women’s sports
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PDT In my video on the And Campaign’s support of the Equality Act-lite, I made reference to Kristy Noem caving on the issue of transgenderism. It seems appropriate to further elaborate on what real leadership looks like in such a time as this. Kristy Noem has gone on at length defending her decision not to sign a bill that would bar transvestites from competing in the sport of the opposite sex, on social media and in a disastrous interview on Tucker Carlson. She has two main arguments for doing so. The first is legality. She does not believe that the bill would hold up in court. This argument is rather paper thin. Though Idaho’s law did not survive the notoriously ideological 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, Daniel Horowitz points out that South Dakota is in the very conservative 8th Circuit Court of Appeals, a very favorable terrain for a ruling that defends reality. This would create a split decision for the Supreme Court to sort out. The unwillingness to engage in this fight denotes weakness not strength. Her second main argument is not to take on the NCAA. Again, this is cowardice. She’s fine with protecting high school athletics (sort of because she wants an alterable birth certificate to be the standard) but wants said athletes go off to college, they’re on their own. Either we stand for truth or we really do not stand at all. This line of thinking surrenders the premise that a man can become a women by only enforcing the premise in select situations. California took on the NCAA and got them to allow athletes to monetize their name and likeness. South Dakota lacks the clout to move such a corporation. This is why multiple states need to pass the same law. Kristi Noem, instead wants multiple states to sign onto a petition, which will accomplish nothing without the teeth of a law behind it. Kristy Noem is right about building a coalition of states, but she has the backwards approach to doing it. The order of operations is to first pass the law and then band together. Instead, Kristi Noem is undermining the legislative efforts in several state to challenge the NCAA by giving Republican legislatures an excuse to betray their base. Had Kristi Noem signed the law, more states would soon follow, similar to how abortion bills in 2019 created an arms race among states to challenge Roe v Wade. Kristi Noem is undermining this arms race. And if another state signs a law to combat transgenderism in women’s sports, South Dakota will not actually be by their side. Most proponent’s of Kristi Noem’s approach did not believe in such approach two weeks ago or before Kristi Noem made the arguments. In reality, they support Kristi Noem, not her policy decision. This is not how we critically think. Pro-abortion Republican, John Kasich, used Roe v Wade as an excuse to veto a meaningful pro-life bill during the end of his term in Ohio. We did not reward his procedural bumbling then. In such a time as this we need people who will take on Cultural Marxism. Petitions and debates will not defeat Cultural Marxism. Outside of supernatural intervention, Cultural Marxist respond to force, mockery, and bankruptcy. Therefore we should be using legislation to combat this movement, not petitions as Kristi Noem suggests. Kristi Noem took the initiative to stand against lockdowns and deserves high credit for doing so. She was 2020’s best governor. But this does not mean she is infallible. She is dead wrong here. Real leadership requires taking the initiative, not undermining the cause of your supporters when they are morally right. Politics is dirty business and as Harvey Dent famously said “You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Although, politicians are not self-aware of their own villainy, we need to be aware of this phenomenon. ‘Overwhelming evidence’ of fraud: Michele Bachmann hosts conference on 2020 election
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:41 AM PDT A former Republican member of Congress who ran for president, Michele Bachmann is now the dean of the graduate school of government at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Article by Art Moore from WND. Noting some polls show nearly half the country still doesn’t believe Joe Biden won the election, she put together a seven-hour virtual conference Tuesday called “Analyzing American Election Integrity.” The university, she told WND in an interview Wednesday, simply was a “forum for letting speakers put evidence out – it’s their opinion, not ours – and then let people decide for themselves.” Some presenters, such as election experts John Fund and Hans von Spakovsky, addressed the general issue of fraud and the Democrats’ controversial For the People Act while making no judgment about the outcome of the 2020 vote. Others, such as former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro, presented evidence to back their insistence that President Trump was the true winner. Bachmann said her aim was to pull together the evidence “and let people decide for themselves: Was this a true and legitimate outcome or not?” “And I’ll tell you the evidence was overwhelming that it was not,” she said. “People want truth and they want justice.” Bachmann said the reaction to the conference so far has been “profound” and people are “overwhelmingly grateful.” “Even among the presenters, you got a sense of how joyous they were that there was a free space, a safe space where people could speak freely about what they had observed about the election, what their research found about the election,” she said. The former congresswoman noted that according to her IT team at Regent, the people who watched the conference online saw nearly three-fourths of the seven hours of presentations. “My phone blew up afterwards,” she told WND, “and people were saying I only intended to watch a little bit – I watched the entire seven hours.” Bachmann said she hopes the presentations will get an even bigger audience now that they are posted in separate videos on a page on Regent University’s website. She said conservatives need to stop playing defense. “You can go on offense when you have the truth,” she said. “We have information, and this is us just the down payment on telling the truth.” The conference, she said, is “the opening salvo.” Anyone who has questioned the election results, she said, has felt like they “were being beaten by a rubber hose by the media and told to get into a cage and shut up.” “What we did yesterday is we didn’t shut up,” Bachmann said. “And we started to talk.” ExcerptsKeynote: Dr. Ben Carson, former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, neurosurgeonCarson said that even speaking about having honest elections “causes all kinds of uproar today.” Americans must have confidence in our institutions, he said, but the 2020 election “was a national disgrace and the media still refuses to tell the truth about it.” He said the opposition to voter ID laws, insisting they amount to a racist “suppression” of minority voters, is racist in itself. “What is racist is saying certain people don’t have the common sense or the ability to get the ID,” he said. “What a bunch of garbage.” Carson said that whether America “remains a free and prosperous nation or it turns into something else,” will depend on how its citzens address the issue of election integrity. He said there was “plenty of fraud” in the 2020 election, but the courts “really haven’t looked at the evidence.” “It’s almost as if they are afraid,” he said. “We must insist on looking at the evidence.” Panel: HR1 “An Effort to Correct the Irregularities, or Institutionalize Them?”Moderator: Dean Michele Bachmann
Fund called HR1, the For the People Act, “rancid” and “the most dangerous bill ever when it comes to elections.” It’s a complete federal takeover of the election process, he said, that hurts minorities more than anyone else. He argued that all industrialized countries require ID at polls, including Mexico and Canada. Fund, noting Senate hearings begin this week on the bill, said it doesn’t appear to have enough votes to overcome the 60-vote filibuster. But it will “hang out there for quite some time,” and when the Democrats think they can pass it, they will try. And they may try to get rid of the filibuster. Von Spakovsky countered the claim by Democrats that there is no significant voter fraud. “We have enough fraud in this country that we need to worry about it,” he said, noting the Supreme Court has said it’s concerned that there is enough fraud to impact a close election “We have close elections all the time,” he said. HR1, he said, would “cement the worst aspects of the 2020 election into federal law and make them worse than that.” It would “gut’ state voter ID laws and require every state to implement same-day voter registration. Election officials, therefore, would have no time to verify information and they couldn’t ask for an ID when the person votes. “If you have enough people [exploiting those loopholes], you can change the outcome of the election,” he said. Von Spakovsky warned that Senate Democrats might try to get rid of the filibuster for “civil rights legislation” and argue that the For the People Act fits that description. Ashcroft, the Missouri AG and son of the former U.S. attorney general, governor and senator John Ashcroft, said that if HR1 passes, he will immediately file a lawsuit. He said the bill is “unworkable, immoral and unconstitutional,” calling it a “swamp trifecta.” Peter Navarro, former director of trade and manufacturing policy for President TrumpNavarro is the author of a three-part report presenting evidence from six battleground states he believes Trump won. He said he presented his report to Trump in the Oval Office and the president had it transmitted to every member of Congress. “History wants to know if this election was indeed stolen,” he said. Evidence of Vote FraudJim and Joe Hoft, The Gateway Pundit The Hoft brothers presented evidence, including video footage they obtained from Detroit’s TCF Center on election night, that they have compiled from among the 1,700 articles they have published on the election. Panel: Is Voter ID a Solution?Moderator: Professor Henry Jones
Nation, a civil rights attorney, pointed out that 75% of Americans support voter ID laws and 35 states have implemented them. Mark Steyn, political commentator and authorSteyn pointed out that to steal a national election, it’s necessary only to steal a relatively small number of votes in six Democratic strongholds. He noted that Philadelphia has been running corrupt elections since the Civil War, citing a 1904 book, “The Shame of the Cities.” Since then, thanks to technology, it’s become easier to steal elections, he said. During the 1920 election, Democrats in Atlanta prevented black women from voting, throwing their votes in the trash. Steyn noted Democrats are saying “America is back” and now has a true “leader of the free world.” But Steyn said an Australian friend wrote to him and argued, “You can’t be the leader of the free world if you don’t have fair elections.” Steyn said election integrity is a “threshold issue.” There’s no point talking about foreign policy or any issue “if you don’t have fair elections.” HR 1, he said takes all the things that make cities like Philadelphia and Atlanta corrupt “and imposes them on the country at large.” Bachmann asked Steyn if he thought it could be proved that the 2020 election was fraudulent. Steyn said, yes, saying that more cases should be brought by citizens. He said he found it interesting that since the cases have become moot, more judges have been ruling in Trump’s favor. David Clements, law professor, New Mexico State University, former trial attorneyClements examined 85 cases brought by Trump and his allies and found that in cases in which the evidence was heard, Trump prevailed on the merits. He pointed to more than 5,000 sworn affidavits from witnesses across the country who are willing to testify under penalty of perjury. “Not one person has been found to have provided false testimony,” he said. “So we should feel very very good about the folks that risked their reputations to tell what they observed.” Clements said every one of them should have the opportunity to “sit in a chair, raise their hand, swear to tell the truth and give their story.” He said he discussed with Bachmann the possibility of holding a mock trial “if the courts won’t do the right thing.” “It would take eight months because there is so much evidence out there,” he said. He said there also are 450 cases that touch on election integrity that don’t involve Donald Trump. Clements said that when skeptics confront him, he urges them to comb through the evidence and then get back to him. They don’t get back to me, he said. “If you did your homework you would come back and arrive at a verdict … that your election was compromised.” ‘The Purge’ by Big Tech targets conservatives, including usJust when we thought the Covid-19 lockdowns were ending and our ability to stay afloat was improving, censorship reared its ugly head. For the last few months, NOQ Report has appealed to our readers for assistance in staying afloat through Covid-19 lockdowns. Former Biden stenographer reveals trail of corruption that gave us Blinken and Sullivan
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:38 AM PDT
Secretary of State Tony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have proven themselves to be total disasters since assuming their White House posts. Their first foray into prominent diplomacy with China was abysmal, stirring many in the nation and around the world to wonder what Joe Biden’s strategy really is with the Chinese Communist Party. Their first performance on the world stage also had many questioning why they were in their roles in the first place. They have competent resumes, but these senior positions are among the most consequential in the world. Certainly Biden could have found people with better temperament and stronger foreign relations experience. The answer may lie in the recent past, according to former White House stenographer Mike McCormick. In an interview with NOQ Report, McCormick revealed the timeline he has put together from both public records as well as his experience working side-by-side with then-VP Biden. He traveled to China, Ukraine, and other nations with the Vice President and participated in engagements that only insiders ever get to witness. And according to McCormick, both Blinken and Sullivan are in their positions based solely on their loyalty. This loyalty was tested through the initial Burisma episode when Blinken and Sullivan worked with Biden to do damage control for Hunter Biden’s various shenanigans. Is it a coincidence that two of the most powerful foreign affairs bureaucrats in the White House were knee-deep in dealings with Burisma? It seems almost certain they were also involved with the Biden family affairs with the Chinese Communist Party, as well as other situations in which Biden needed help getting his family in and out of trouble. Now, it seems their loyalty combined with experience handling Biden’s foreign relations faux pas landed them the coveted White House appointments. In McCormick’s book, Joe Biden Unauthorized, we get a very close look at the degradation of Biden’s mental capacity. McCormick was there when Joe Biden was much sharper than he is today and has insights into the reduction of his mental acuity. Perhaps more importantly, McCormick put together a timeline that reveals much more about the various Joe and Hunter Biden affairs than anything we’ve heard from mainstream media. He also names names of those in the media who are part of Biden’s inner circle. These journalists, who are supposed to be unbiased, accepted invitations and rewards from Biden during and after his time as Vice President. Later in this episode, we had our first News Update with Bill McIntosh as he talked to former Shiloh, Israel Mayor Dave Rubin about the state of affairs in Israel following their latest election. When we understand Tony Blinken and Jake Sullivan were directly involved with Joe Biden’s dealings with Burisma and China, it becomes clear why these unqualified men are now our top diplomats. Biden’s push for background check expansion will do nothing to stop mass shootings
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:47 AM PDT It’s easy to fall for the background check argument made by the vast majority of Democrats, including Joe Biden. On the surface it seems to make sense to make it more difficult for criminals to legally acquire firearms. But even in that simple statement, we see one of the fatal flaws in their argument. Criminals do, by their very nature, what it takes to circumvent laws; they don’t need to legally acquire firearms if they really want them. That’s not the only fatal flaw, nor is it even the biggest. One only needs to look at the statistics and facts to realize that existing background check laws do little to stop mass shootings and expanding them only eliminates a miniscule percentage. According to Just The News: Biden explicitly asked the Senate to approve two recent background check bills passed by the house. One, H.R. 8, largely “prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties” absent a background check. The other, H.R. 1446, would address the so-called “Charleston loophole” by broadening the waiting time from three days to 20. Most major mass shooters passed background checks Yet in spite of perennial demands from gun control advocates for an expanded background check system throughout the United States, a review of major mass shooting incidents over the last several years indicates that such policies would have very minimal effect on such tragedies. A lengthy review of nearly 20 mass shootings by the New York Times found that “a vast majority of guns used [in those shootings] were bought legally and with a federal background check.” Only a few of the shooters on that list obtained their firearms without passing federal background checks. The white supremacist shooter who murdered nine people at a black church in Charleston, S.C. in 2015 purchased his gun after the FBI failed to conduct his background check in a timely fashion (the “Charleston loophole” gets its name from that incident). A shooter who committed mass murder in Binghamton, N.Y. in 2009 obtained his gun the same way. In one case — that of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012 — the shooter obtained his weapons by killing his mother and stealing her guns. Those firearms had been purchased legally by the shooter’s mother. The perpetrator of the 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting, meanwhile, claimed to have purchased his gun online via a local dealer, meaning he would have had to undergo a background check before taking possession of it. The Orlando, Fla. mass shooting of 2016 — the second-deadliest in U.S. history — was also carried out with a gun purchased via a background check. The Las Vegas shooting of 2017, meanwhile — the deadliest in American history — was carried out by an individual who passed multiple background checks to purchase numerous guns (though it’s not clear if the guns used in the shooting itself were purchased under background checks). Most mass shooters are able to pass current background checks and would pass proposed background checks. On the other hand, there are hundreds of thousands if not millions of Americans who should lawfully be allowed to purchase firearms but who are either hampered by or completely blocked by background check errors, complications, or hassles. Over 250,000 veterans who need help handling their finances were added to NICS even though their disabilities likely shouldn’t preclude gun ownership. Minorities are wrongly denied disproportionately to others. People are often denied because their names sound or look similar to names of the actual criminals who are banned from guns. Sadly, most background check denials are mistakes. According to Townhall: Gun control advocates keep claiming that federal background checks have stopped 3 million dangerous or prohibited people from buying a gun. However, what they should say is that there were 3 million “initial denials.” Relying on phonetically similar names along with birth dates doesn’t allow for much accuracy. It is one thing to stop a felon from buying a gun. It is quite another to stop a law-abiding citizen from buying a gun just because his name is similar to that of a felon. That massive error rate occurs because government background checks focus only on two pieces of information: names and birth dates, ignoring Social Security numbers and addresses. The government looks for phonetically similar names (e.g., “Smith” and “Smythe” are assumed to be the same) and even ignores different middle names. These mistakes affect certain racial groups more than others. Hispanics are more likely to share names with other Hispanics; the same is true of blacks. Because 30 percent of black males have criminal records that prevent them from buying guns, law-abiding African-American men more often have their names confused with those of prohibited people. The biggest reason we should oppose expansion of background checks (other than the simple fact that the Constitution protects our right to keep and bear arms) is because of the real motive behind them. This isn’t just about making it difficult or impossible for law abiding citizens to arm themselves. It’s about the next logical step in their gun-grabbing plan: A national gun registry. Background checks are the gateway through which a national gun registry is born, and a national gun registry is the pathway to gun confiscations. Few Democrat lawmakers are willing to say it out loud, but nearly all of them are thinking it. Returning to the original premise that criminals will break the law because they’re criminals, let’s look at the laws that were allegedly broken by Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, the Boulder supermarket shooter. According to Liberty Nation: Universal Background Checks: According to his arrest warrant, Mr. Alissa bought a Ruger brand AR-15 pistol on March 16, 2021. The reason police know about this purchase is because Alissa made it legally, passing both state and federal background checks. Red Flag Laws: Reports are now emerging that Mr. Alissa’s family has described him as having mental illness and behavioral issues. Extreme risk protection orders – or red flag laws – have become popular in many Democratic circles. These allow judges to strip the right to keep and bear arms from those accused by private parties of being a danger to themselves or others. It’s a breathtaking annexation of Americans’ rights, but it’s in force in several places – including Colorado. High-Capacity Magazine Ban: Since 2013, Colorado has banned full or high-capacity magazines under state law. It enacted a ban that forbade any new magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds from being possessed or transferred from the law’s enactment date. This grandfathered existing magazines and reduced owners to possessors. Assault Weapons Ban: The city of Boulder, where the massacre took place, has its own gun control laws. Two years ago, it passed a ban on magazines holding more than ten rounds as well as the end goal of so many gun control proponents: a complete “assault-weapons ban.” Open Carry Ban: In keeping with the company’s progressively more anti-firearm policies, Kroger has asked customers not to open carry weapons in their stores since 2019. This is store policy, not state or local law, but it’s still another rule broken by the murderer in Boulder. First-Degree Murder: Finally, Mr. Alissa committed ten instances of first-degree murder. While not strictly speaking a gun violation itself, murder is the crime society punishes the most severely. Any gun control law said to be effective in the face of someone willing to commit murder must not rely on any deterrence value. We already have the maximum deterrence applied to the crime of homicide. Expanding background check tyranny will do next to nothing to stop the next mass shooter. They WILL slow or stop law abiding citizens from being able to keep and bear arms. Democrats know this. It’s their actual goal. Left-wing Intolerance, Kamala In Command, Media Bias
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:27 PM PDT
by Gary Bauer: Left-wing Intolerance But not everyone is happy about the stunning success of the Golden Eagles, and I don’t mean just Ohio State and Florida fans. USA Today‘s Race and Inclusion Editor Hemal Jhaveri wrote an editorial Tuesday suggesting that Oral Roberts should not be allowed to participate in the NCAA tournament because its players adhere to traditional Christians values. Students voluntarily attend Oral Roberts University. But Jhaveri is upset that they pledge to maintain certain standards of personal conduct one might expect from a Christian school. She accused the school, and by extension the basketball team, of being bigots and against the values of the NCAA. By the way, 11 of the 16 players on the team are young men of color. Now, we know what the NCAA’s values are. We’ve seen the NCAA abuse its power to intimidate states from passing laws to protect religious liberty. My friends, it’s the USA Today editorial that is bigoted and intolerant. And you don’t have to be a sports fan to understand the threat it represents to all Christians. If Christian basketball players can’t take part in an NCAA tournament because their views are “wildly out of line with modern society,” as Jhaveri put it, then why should evangelical Christians be allowed to manage your bank? Teach at your school? Be a lawyer in our courts? Or a representative in Congress? I have been warning Christians for decades that the left’s mantra of tolerance, which it uses to seduce young Christians, is nothing but a Trojan horse. The left is increasingly intolerant of traditional Christian values, and its goal is to drive us out of the public square and into the closet. For years the left insisted, “You can’t legislate morality.” Well, the left is doing exactly that – forcing its morality on us! No society has neutrality as its leading value. Every society stands for something. Communist China stands for the values of Karl Marx and Chairman Mao. Iran stands for the values of the ayatollah and his version of Islam. America was built on Judeo-Christian values. But now radical secularists, in the name of tolerance and inclusion, are arguing that Christian basketball players should be excluded from college sports. Men and women of faith must wake up and defend their rights, while they still can. Kamala In Command But if you have any doubts that this is intentional, just look at yesterday’s big White House announcement. President Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris as his border czar. Supposedly, her experience as the top law enforcement official of California played a major role in the decision. Well, if your goal is open borders, then nobody is more qualified to handle that program than Kamala Harris. Yes, Harris was attorney general of California, a state full of sanctuary cities and a sanctuary state itself. And Harris is all in when it comes to protecting illegal aliens from law enforcement. Demoralization among the Border Patrol and ICE is sky-high. Many agents are expected to retire, and the government may not be able to fill their jobs. That demoralization is a way to effectively abolish ICE, just like the left’s demonizing of police, leading many officers to quit or retire early, is a way to effectively defund the police. Well, Harris, who is now in charge of the border, has compared our brave immigration enforcement agents to the KKK. What do you think the child of an ICE agent must feel when she learns about the KKK in school and learns that the vice president of the United States compared her father or mother to the KKK? The Boulder Jihad Obviously, we don’t know yet what those charges could be, but there is plenty of evidence to suspect this was an anti-Semitic hate crime. Let’s review what we know.
Media Bias How bad was it? According to the analysis:
Interestingly, it began to change right around the time that Pfizer announced its vaccine was 90% effective, which was less than a week after the 2020 election. But why would the American media have such a dire outlook on everything? Well, in addition to the coronavirus pandemic, we also had another pandemic running rampant in America, and it was especially prevalent in major media newsrooms – Trump Derangement Syndrome. In order to damage and defeat Donald Trump, the American media (the propaganda arm of the Democrat Party) had to make the news about the pandemic as terrible as possible. It worked. Progressive mayors and governors used the horrible headlines to justify shutting down their economies and locking up the residents of their cities and states. But even now, the media still can’t change course entirely because it’s too early for Biden to take credit for anything. All he’s doing is pushing out the vaccines that Donald Trump and Mike Pence developed! Biden’s Press Conference The media spin was happening in the room, as reporters did their best to pitch softballs to Biden. Nevertheless, he whiffed many. He seemed confused and befuddled, and often fumbled for his notes. But the “nice guy” Joe Biden couldn’t help taking a cheap shot or two. Asked about the border crisis, he said that no president would ever let poor migrant children starve in the desert, other than Donald Trump. That’s a disgusting lie, especially from a guy who claims he wants to unite the country. But there was something else that I found particularly jarring during the exchanges on immigration. There was no one in that room speaking for the average American taxpayer who will be significantly impacted by the influx of hundreds of thousands of undereducated, low-skilled workers. Debunking 6 Myths About the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:49 PM PDT by Adam Michel: Congress passed a $1.5 trillion tax cut and reform package in December 2017 that became the subject of heated, partisan attacks. Now, more than three years later, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is the subject of countless lingering mischaracterizations that fuel a push in Congress to repeal parts of the law. Setting the record straight for lawmakers and the American people is crucial to ensuring Congress keeps taxes low and makes permanent the reforms of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Reversing the 2017 tax cuts not only would raise Americans’ taxes but make the economic recovery from COVID-19 more challenging by increasing the cost of building back a strong labor market. Here are six of the most common myths addressed in a recent Heritage Foundation report and why they’re wrong. Myth No. 1: The tax cuts benefited corporations, not working Americans or the economy. The most important legacy of the tax cuts is their benefits for working Americans. Following the reform, which included significant tax cuts for businesses, the labor market improved markedly. Wage growth increased by more than a percentage point in the two subsequent years, resulting in annual wages of more than $1,400 above trend for production and nonsupervisory workers. New job openings also surged in 2018, the year following the tax cuts, and about 83,000 more Americans voluntarily left their jobs for better opportunities at the end of 2019 compared to the trend before the reform. Census Bureau data also show that real household income reached an all-time high in 2019, growing by $4,400 (a one-year increase of 6.8%). The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also was the most significant reform to many parts of the tax code in 30 years—since President Ronald Reagan’s 1986 tax reform. Then the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made it easier for millions of Americans to pay their taxes, simplified family benefits, and overhauled the international tax system, among many other reforms. Myth No. 2: It was a tax bill only for the rich, so most Americans didn’t get a tax cut. Many Americans believe they are not benefiting from the tax cuts because it was reported widely that the reform primarily benefited corporations and the wealthy. This narrative is incorrect. The individual tax cuts benefited more than 80% of Americans, and fewer than 5% of taxpayers were projected to see a tax increase in 2018. In the $1.5 trillion tax bill, more than three-quarters of the total tax cut was for individual taxpayers. IRS data confirms that Americans in every income group benefited from lower effective tax rates. Average effective tax rates declined by 9.3% (about 1.4 percentage points) in 2018. The tax cuts as a percentage of taxes paid in 2017 were largest for the lowest-income Americans and smallest for the top 1%, meaning high-income Americans now pay a larger share of income taxes than they did before the tax cuts. Myth No. 3: The SALT cap increased taxes on the middle class. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also included a $10,000 cap on the deduction for state and local taxes (dubbed SALT), which is available to taxpayers who choose to itemize their tax deductions—instead of selecting the now larger standard deduction. Democrats and a few Republicans have decried how the new cap harms middle-class families. However, lower tax rates, a larger standard deduction, and changes to the alternative minimum tax offset the changes and mean that few taxpayers saw overall net tax increases. The cap was a necessary reform to level the playing field between high-tax states and low-tax states. Among the high-income Americans who benefit from this deduction, an average millionaire living in New York or California deducted more than $450,000 worth of state and local taxes before the cap. In comparison, an average millionaire in Texas deducted only $50,000 and therefore paid close to $180,000 more per year in federal taxes, simply for living in Texas. Repealing the SALT cap would reinstate a tax subsidy used almost exclusively by high-income taxpayers and would benefit politicians in high-tax states at the expense of taxpayers around the country. Myth No. 4: The new 21% corporate tax rate is too low. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanently lowered the federal corporate income tax rate to 21% in 2018, down from a high of 35%. A key campaign pledge made by then-candidate Joe Biden and congressional Democrats in 2020 was to raise the corporate tax rate to 28%. Even at 21%, American businesses pay combined state and federal corporate tax rates similar to companies in our peer countries. Raising the corporate tax rate to 28% would hurt U.S. competitiveness and make America a global leader again in punitive business tax rates. Myth No. 5: The tax cut pays for itself. Former President Donald Trump and administration officials often claimed that tax reform would pay for itself. This claim was misleading and distracted from the real purpose of the reform. The purpose of cutting taxes is to allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned money, not maximize revenue for the Treasury. If Congress can responsibly reduce spending, lower revenues should be the goal of tax cuts. The tax cuts increased the size of the economy, but not by enough to recoup all the lost revenue before the law expires. Myth No. 6: The tax cuts caused the federal budget deficit. Democrats and many Republicans rightly worried that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would contribute unnecessarily to the national debt. However, claims that the tax cuts are responsible for the federal government’s poor fiscal health are a misdiagnosis of trends that are decades in the making. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act did increase the budget deficit, but the law is not the underlying cause of the unsustainable U.S. budget. The systemic gap between revenues and expenditures is driven by sustained growth in mandatory spending programs since the 1970s. Repealing the 2017 tax cuts would not change the trajectory of increasing federal budget deficits. The tax cuts (even if made permanent) represent only about 16% of the pre-pandemic budget deficit, and one year’s projected deficit in 2030 is larger than the entire 10-year cost of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as passed. The 2017 tax cuts represented critical structural reforms to the U.S. tax code that will need to be made permanent in the coming years. Setting the record straight on the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is crucial to ensuring Congress chooses to keep taxes low and make the 2017 reforms permanent. Reversing the tax cuts based on a mischaracterization of the true effects would make the economic recovery from COVID-19 much more challenging by increasing costs for American businesses and families. All Men (even white) are Created Equal
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:26 PM PDT
by Dr. Kathleen Brush: Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton is proposing a bill called Combatting Racist Training in the Military Act. He begins by citing that in America all men are created equal. He goes on to talk about equal dignity and protection for all people under the law. He calls for bans on teaching that some races are inherently inferior and that America is an inherently racist nation. If this was 1865 or even 1964 you might think this was written by and for black people. But Tom is white, and he is addressing training in the military that teaches whites and America are fundamentally flawed racists. The training is based on Critical Race Theory (CRT) as are most government decisions today. Introduced in 1989, CRT is anti-American and anti-white. It is a conspiracy theory advancing that whites are obsessed with maintaining a superior position in society to ensure the inferiority of non-whites. It has strong ties to Marxism. As a conspiracy theory, it makes QAnon look like a featherweight. CRT is used to predict and explain racism. Explaining and predicting is something all tested theories can do. The problem with CRT is that it is not tested. The validation of CRT is done by telling selected stories of white oppression. We are a nation that believes in science, but not when it comes to this extremely important subject. But the uber stories in America disprove CRT. If whites are ensuring the inferiority of non-whites, why are Asian-Americans the most educated and prosperous ethnic group in America? How could Latino GDP be higher than every Latino nation, including Brazil with three times the population? How could blacks be the most educated and prosperous black population in the world? How could there be a black and Asian female vice president, 137 current people of color in Congress, and blacks disproportionately running America’s 100 largest American cities? Why are there more impoverished white people than blacks, Latinos, or Asians? Because CRT is a canard. In history, it may have explained some behaviors much as analog theories for Chinese, Russian, Muslim, Arab, and the Ashanti would. These analog theories may still have applicability because most nations don’t even pretend to see equality as a goal. Discrimination is seen as a useful way to order society. America is at the other extreme. American military power (87% white) was essential to ending white supremacy in the world after 1945 and to secure commitments from all nations to end discrimination. White Americans in 1964 uniquely voluntarily gave up their lock on power and supported the rise of a diverse equality-oriented leading anti-racist nation. It seems improbable that Cotton’s bill could be necessary. But American politics are engaged in a dangerous duplicitous game. There is a pretension of an obsession with ending racism, while it stokes it every day against white Americans. Can you imagine a fighting force of disunited soldiers? The Chinese, Russians, and Iranians are lapping this up. The world no longer sees America as a superpower. They see a racist pariah. In discussions with China last week in Alaska, Blinken tried to chastise China for human rights abuses. The Chinese scoffed, pointing to an epidemic of gunning down black Americans in the street and violence against Asians. They must watch CNN and MSNBC too. Cotton’s proposal should be something all Americans, left, right and center should agree on, and not just in the military. Crypto Currency and NFTs: The Market Yet Again Says Digital Property Is Property
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:58 PM PDT
by Seton Motley: Get a load of this harmonic convergence example of modern market forces at work…. This is a landmark moment in the evolution of our economy – and the re-acknowledgement of the import of Intellectual Property (IP). Let’s first define some terms. You may be familiar with cryptocurrency: NFTs are a way to protect the creation of digital IP. “The digital files themselves are infinitely reproducible” – like with cryptocurrency. But like with cryptocurrency – mass reproduction damages value. NFTs is the marketplace beginning to course-correct – after the IP thieves’ long heyday of digital heists. NFTs deal directly with what has long been IP thieves’ absurd defense of their electronic larceny…. “If Cyber Bob illegally downloads Digital Joe’s song from the Internet, it’s crucial to recognize that, in most cases, Joe hasn’t lost anything. Yes, one might try to argue that people who use intellectual property without paying for it steal the money they would have owed had they bought it lawfully. “But there are two basic problems with this contention. First, we ordinarily can’t know whether the downloader would have paid the purchase price had he not misappropriated the property. Second, the argument assumes the conclusion that is being argued for – that it is theft.”There are two basic problems with the IP thieves’ contentions with our contention. First, it doesn’t matter whether or not the thief would have paid the purchase price for their digital heists. We can guess most car thieves can’t afford to pay the going rates for the Mercedes and Porsches they steal. But that is totally irrelevant to our acknowledging that their thievery is wrong – and prosecuting them for it. Which means: Second, of COURSE digital theft is theft. If something is for sale – and you obtain it without paying for it – of COURSE it is theft. Because duh. IP thieves are probably just making a semantic “this isn’t theft” argument. Because the pre-digital definition of “theft” refers exclusively to physical property. Which is intellectual and moral feebleness of the absolute highest order. Because as we long ago noted…. ————————– Seton Motley is the President of Less Government and he to ARRA News Service. The Nature of Chinese Contempt for Us
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:58 PM PDT
by Victor Davis Hanson: Last week in Anchorage, Alaska, Chinese diplomats dressed down Biden Administration Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Both seem stunned by the Chinese broadsides. Apparently, as elite Americans readily confess to inherent white supremacy and racism—highlighting the complaints of BLM and Antifa—the Chinese are happy to agree that such admittedly toxic Americans should not dare to criticize China’s racist policies. Not since newly elected President John Kennedy was humiliated at the Cold War Vienna summit in June 1961 by USSR strongman Nikita Khrushchev have American diplomats been so roughly manhandled by a Communist government. China’s defiant provocations are not just verbal. Nor are they aimed only at our high officials. New York University students, at an overseas satellite Shanghai China campus, were manhandled and jailed by Chinese authorities. Not long ago U.S. diplomats in China were subject to Chinese COVID-19 anal swab testing—supposedly “in error.” These examples of continued humiliation and harassment could be multiplied. Yet they are simply the current public face of China’s insidious and systematic theft of U.S. patents and copyrights. It brazenly violates trade agreements, as well as manipulates its currency, dumps products below cost on world markets, cyber-assaults, expropriates Western technology, and stonewalls accurate information on the origins of COVID-19. If China gives out money, it logically believes it owns the recipient. New York University in the last five years has received some $47 million in Communist Chinese-affiliated gifts. So Beijing apparently believes that it now “owns” NYU, and can send any message it likes to its clients. Stanford University recently was cited by the U.S. Department of Education for failing to report over $64 million from Chinese sources since 2010. No surprise that China, in a demonstration of their contempt, recently sent a visiting researcher to Stanford, who turned out to be connected with the Chinese military. Hollywood claims that it is woke. But recently it was disclosed that some directors had selected their actors on the basis of skin color. They were obeying China’s requirements for American films to enter the lucrative Chinese film market, slated to become the world’s largest in 2021. The NBA—both players and coaches—loudly condemns their supposedly racist American homeland. Yet they self-censor any criticism of massive human rights violations by the Chinese communists—given a $5 billion NBA Chinese market. Lots of countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe have signed up with the Chinese “Belt and Road” initiative to develop ports, harbors, rail, and freeways. They are now rereading the contractual fine print. Chinese multibillion dollar investments do not come without strings. The price of borrowing from China is tough terms of repayment and political subservience. China is also the world’s greatest and most effective propagandist. Its intelligence services and disinformation efforts make the Cold War effort of the communist Soviet Union seem amateurish in comparison. China’s third of a million students who attend American universities and annual 3 million tourists to the United States soak up and master American popular culture. As dutiful communist subjects, many are attuned to the self-loathing apparent in American universities, corporations, entertainment, and the media. In reaction, some seek to master and manipulate that sentiment in various ways and to China’s benefit. China may have destroyed the culture of Tibet, destroyed democracy in Hong Kong, put Muslim minorities in detention camps, and systematically discriminated against African visitors, but the victimizer nonetheless plays the “victim” of American “racism.” At best, its failed containment of the COVID-19 pandemic was criminally negligent. At worst, it was a hostile act. Yet each time China hears prominent Americans damn the United States as racist, Chinese racists chime in “Amen!” China welcomes U.S. self-loathing that it interprets as weakness and decadence to be exploited—not as self-reflection to be admired, much less emulated. In Chinese zero-sum thinking, if elite Americans themselves admit to systemic racism, sexism, and nativism, then they have already done most of the work for Chinese propagandists. China merely recycles such domestic charges to prove that a pathological America has no right to allege others to be racists—as it bullies neighbors with boasts that a dissolute and divided United States is in decline and cannot be counted as a reliable ally. China is in a race to achieve global hegemony. For a while longer, it seeks sympathetic world opinion—at least until it has achieved unquestioned superior military and economic power. So for now, China feigns victimhood. And it seeks solidarity with others inside the United States and abroad who claim to be fellow victims of American racism. Such naked artifice and hypocrisy may seem crazy, given China’s atrocious human rights record. But China views our own exploding budget deficits, staggering national debt, open borders, disingenuous “1619 Project,” the violence of the summer riots, and the epidemic of race-based reeducation workshops as all far crazier—and most welcome supplements to their efforts. No Vietnamese Need Apply
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:39 PM PDT Joe Biden’s politically motivated hypocrisy on immigration.
by Joseph Hippolito: Nearly half a century before igniting the current border crisis, Joe Biden tried to keep another group of immigrants out of the United States. As Delaware’s junior Senator in 1975, the future virtual president opposed allocating federal money to help refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia establish new lives after their homelands fell to Communist insurgents.Biden was not alone. Other Democrats opposed such mass resettlement. Among them was California Gov. Jerry Brown, who even tried to forbid aircraft filled with refugees from landing at Travis Air Force Base near San Francisco. Also among those Democrats was South Dakota Sen. George McGovern, who insisted that American troops leave South Vietnam. As his party’s Presidential nominee in 1972, McGovern lost to incumbent President Richard Nixon in one of the biggest landslides in national history. In 1975, McGovern said during a lecture: “Ninety per cent of the refugees would be better off going back to their own land … The Communist government has already given orders that the people are not to be molested … Our program should include the highest priority steps to facilitate their early return to Vietnam.”But Biden’s opposition became conspicuous by its unwavering tenacity. That tenacity began days before the Communists conquered both South Vietnam and Cambodia. On April 14, Biden joined his fellow members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in a meeting with President Gerald Ford, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Defense Secretary James Schlesinger at the White House. Though Ford had asked for $722 million in military aid to South Vietnam, discussion quickly shifted to evacuating both Americans and South Vietnamese. Kissinger promptly outlined the logistical complexity. “The total list of the people endangered in Vietnam is over a million,” he said. “The irreducible list is 174,000. This doesn’t mean we could get them out; it would be just those in overwhelming jeopardy.” As discussion continued, Biden concentrated on evacuating Americans. “We should focus on getting them out,” Biden said. “Getting the Vietnamese out and military aid for the GVN (South Vietnamese government) are totally different.” Kissinger replied that plans to evacuate Americans were “in pretty good shape” but added that the United States has “an obligation” to help the Vietnamese. “This is infinitely more complicated and large-scale,” Kissinger said. “I will vote for any amount for getting the Americans out,” Biden responded. “I don’t want it mixed with getting the Vietnamese out.” When Pennsylvania Sen. Hugh Scott, the chamber’s minority leader, suggested discussing specific amounts, Biden replied, “I don’t want to commit myself to any precise number. How much money depends on how many we try to get out.” Unlike his fellow Senators, most of whom wanted to end American military involvement, Biden offered no concrete suggestions or hypothetical scenarios. He merely reiterated his opposition to funding the evacuation of Vietnamese. Three days after the meeting, the Khmer Rouge conquered Cambodia. Pol Pot, the Khmer Rouge’s leader, immediately implemented the genocidal policies that killed between one million and three million of his countrymen. Meanwhile, the North Vietnamese were rapidly descending on Saigon, South Vietnam’s capital. Yet the exponentially deteriorating situation failed to sway Biden. When Kissinger appeared as a witness during committee hearings on Ford’s proposal, Biden told him the White House “had not informed Congress adequately about the number of refugees to be brought here.” the New York Times reported. Publicly, Biden insisted that the United States has “no obligation, moral or otherwise, to evacuate foreign nationals,” and that “the United States has no obligation to evacuate one — or 100,001 — South Vietnamese,” he said. Nevertheless, 14 of the committee’s 17 members recommended that the Senate support the appropriation for humanitarian aid. Biden was one of the three opposing it. On April 25, Biden became one of 18 Senators to oppose the bill, which passed, 55-18. Five days later, the Vietnam War ended when the Communists captured Saigon. Biden’s ensuing political behavior could only be described as surreal. On May 8, Biden joined 91 other Senators supporting a resolution welcoming South Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees to the United States. Eight days later, however, Biden abstained on three different votes concerning financial support for those refugees — including the actual bill for $405 million to be delivered by June 30, the end of the fiscal year. Why did Biden oppose immigration from South Vietnam and Cambodia nearly 50 years ago? Perhaps he, like other Democrats, feared the creation of a pro-Republican voting base; Cuban refugees who escaped Fidel Castro built just that in Florida. Why does Biden support unlimited immigration from Latin America now? Perhaps he, like other Democrats, hope to expand the party’s own voting base. Despite Congressional appropriations, however, thousands of Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians had to cross the Pacific Ocean on unsafe, even rickety, boats. They faced starvation, dehydration, illness and piracy. They would be nicknamed, “the boat people.” Nearly half a century after Biden’s anti-immigrant activism, Vietnamese still remember. “My Mom and my Dad were refugees from the war,” wrote someone called SecondGen. “They had worked closely supporting the cause against Communism. It is horrible what they had to go through. They will never forget that Biden did not want the Vietnamese to come to America. He wanted to close out Camp Pendleton and offer zero support to Vietnamese people. The Vietnamese people who lived through this remember this time clearly and the impact his decisions made. It’s too bad that the media is trying to spin the truth.” “My wife and then 2 years old daughter were among the first Vietnamese who fled Saigon,” wrote Phung Ngo. “We arrived at Guam on 4/24/1975 and CONUS (the continental United States) on May 1st, 1975 as evacuees instead of refugees because, now I learn, Joe Biden refused to accept us. Many members of our greater family including my father and brother were ‘re-educated’ because they were not lucky to escape as we. Many others were executed or died in the last few battles. All to get away from the Communists, Socialists or Marxists, whatever you call them.” Those commenters responded to an article from the left-wing blog Daily Kos that criticized Biden’s stance at the time. The author, Stephen Fox, volunteered to help refugees living temporarily at Camp Pendleton, a Marine base north of San Diego. “Egregious memories of then-Senator Joe Biden’s staunch opposition to desegregation and busing still disturb me, but worse was his hostility towards helping Vietnamese war refugees after that war,” Fox wrote. “I spent a lot of time just after the fall of Saigon as a volunteer helping Vietnamese refugees living in a tent city at Camp Pendleton Marine Base, to determine where in the United States they could move to. “The State Department, Red Cross, and airlines were all there to help; I helped because I was asked to do so by an eminent Vietnamese Buddhist in L.A. (Los Angeles), Dr. Thich Thien-An, and because I spoke French via a French-Vietnamese translator, in order to help those bewildered people. Why? Because no one else would. “President Gerald Ford evacuated thousands of families who had worked with U.S. troops during that infernal war, but the arch Senate spokesman, the leading voice in the Senate opposing this rescue effort. was Joe Biden. (bold in original)” Monica Showalter, <writing in American Thinker, described living with these refugees in suburban San Diego before paying Biden the ultimate insult. “They were wonderful people, the world’s most desirable immigrants, people who shared our values, showed us what industry was, and delighted us with their everyday ao dais (long gowns) and Vietnamese groceries and restaurants,” she wrote. “These Southeast Asian refugees impressed us in school, coming in with no language skills and assimilating quickly anyway. In short, they were real refugees who had sided with us and proved their loyalty by paying a price. As Americans here, we cared about them. “And Biden was one of the few, the very few, the distant few, who wanted to leave them in the water with the pirates.” Tags: Joseph Hippolito, FrontPage Mag, No Vietnamese Need ApplyTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. Biden’s Border Catastrophe
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:12 PM PDT A disaster getting worse by the day.
by Joseph Klein: The hordes of migrants trying to enter the United States by hook or crook regard Joe Biden as their president. Weeks after Biden’s inauguration, for example, migrants were spotted flying a Biden presidential campaign flag at a migrant camp of would-be asylum seekers on the Mexican side of the U.S.-Mexico border. The migrants waiting to be admitted to the United States to begin their asylum application process know that their stay in Mexico is coming to an end after Biden recklessly eliminated the Trump administration’s successful “Remain in Mexico” policy. Migrant families and unaccompanied minors who have crossed the border illegally also have much to thank Biden for. So do the smugglers making millions of dollars in human trafficking. No wonder Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in early March called Biden “the migrant president,” which he did not intend as a compliment. During a March 23rd press conference, Mexico’s president elaborated. “Expectations were created that with the Government of President Biden there would be a better treatment of migrants,” he said. “And this has caused Central American migrants, and also from our country, wanting to cross the border thinking that it is easier to do so.”After the Biden administration re-instituted the catch and release policy that had been ended by the Trump administration, migrant families apprehended after illegally entering the United States have been quickly released. They are free to remain in this country without even being issued a court appearance date.“This is insane, it is another pull factor that will overwhelm us,” a senior-level law enforcement source with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the Rio Grande Valley told Breitbart. “We are creating another entirely different class of aliens we will have to deal with years from now. We will never find most of these aliens once they are released.”Some of those claiming to be families consist of children with smugglers posing as their parents. In any case, whether real or not, all families apprehended after illegally entering the United States should have been immediately turned away because of the coronavirus pandemic. The Biden administration has the emergency legal authority to do so. However, according to Axios, there is data showing that “an average of just 13% of nearly 13,000 family members attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border were returned to Mexico between March 14 and March 21 using the public health order, which essentially says the U.S. can close the border to nonessential travel because of the coronavirus.”To make matters worse, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has confirmed that there have been “instances” when aliens who crossed our border illegally were released without testing them for the coronavirus. There were cases in which illegal aliens who had tested positive were nevertheless released into U.S. communities. Mayorkas’s claim that the Biden administration has “closed” the border with Mexico to migrant families is a preposterous lie. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki repeated this lie at her March 22nd press briefing. All of this is happening as thousands of unaccompanied minors who cross the border illegally are being welcomed with open arms by the Biden administration. The administration was completely unprepared for the chaos that has followed. As of mid-March, more than 13,000 unaccompanied minors were reportedly in U.S. custody, overwhelming CBP resources. There is not enough space to house them temporarily in Border Patrol facilities until they can be safely transferred to facilities operated by the better equipped Department of Health and Human Services. The situation is so bad that the minors are being crammed together in ramshackle quarters, in numbers way beyond their stated capacity limits, with no regard to the risk of coronavirus spread. The minors lie on floor mats with a foil sheet for covers. According ABC News, internal CBP documents it obtained show there are now 3,889 migrants in a holding facility in Donna, Texas that is meant to hold just 250. “That means it is currently at 1,556% capacity.” The Biden administration has prohibited journalists from visiting or photographing where these minors, who shouldn’t be in the U.S. in the first place, are being held. The administration is covering up the shocking extent of the humanitarian and health crisis it has created. A prominent photojournalist, John Moore, tweeted: “I respectfully ask US Customs and Border Protection to stop blocking media access to their border operations. I have photographed CBP under Bush, Obama and Trump but now – zero access is granted to media.” In response to repeated media requests for such access, all that the White House would say is that it is “working to finalize details” of a plan to allow some press access. Biden administration officials continue to refuse to even acknowledge that there is a crisis. The administration remains in full spin mode. Psaki, for example, claimed that “children presenting at our border who are fleeing violence … who are fleeing terrible situations, is not a crisis.” Yes, there are horrible economic conditions and violence in Central America, which parents want their children to escape. But it is a crisis when such desperate Central American parents are encouraged enough by Biden’s undoing of the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies to put their children in the hands of dangerous smugglers. It is a crisis when such children may never get to the border safely because of disease, violent attacks, or sex trafficking. “We’re dealing with a different culture who’s not afraid to send all their kids under the age of five, knowing they’re going to get raped, knowing they’re going to get killed,” a border agent told The Epoch Times on condition of anonymity. “You talk to the adults or the teenagers and they’ll tell you, ‘They raped three or four girls, and they kicked them off the trains.’ They’re going to die.” Those minors lucky enough to make it safely to the U.S-Mexico border are vastly overwhelming the resources available to take care of them after they have crossed illegally into this country. Hence, the inhumane conditions facing the children, just as they thought the worst was behind them. A picture is a worth a thousand words, as photos made available by Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar’s office of the horrible living conditions demonstrate. Despite its denials, the Biden administration has sent strong signals through its actions that encourage migrants to come to our country illegally, especially unaccompanied minors. The pull is too great to resist. Who has Biden just tasked with trying to stem the flow of migrants from Central America? It’s Vice President Kamala Harris, of course. Biden claimed that Harris was the most qualified person to take on this job. Based on what? Harris has no experience either in diplomacy or immigration matters. It was just the other day when Harris laughed in response to a question whether she had plans to visit the border. Harris is supposed to oversee the infusion of billions of dollars into the economies of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador in an attempt to reduce the poverty and violence that are fueling the migration surge. She will fail just as then-Vice President Biden did during the Obama administration. American taxpayers’ money will go down the money pits of these corrupt regimes. President Juan Orlando Hernández of Honduras, for example, was linked to alleged involvement with Honduras’s drug-trafficking industry during a federal trial in New York. The trial was of a Honduran citizen who was convicted on March 22nd on various counts, including conspiracy to traffic cocaine. The New York Times reported that “evidence presented in court over two weeks provided a searing assessment of the president, whose government’s failure to build a lawful state and a robust economy has helped drive hundreds of thousands of despairing citizens to emigrate in recent years, with most trying to reach the United States.” Yet Biden’s solution is to send Harris down to Honduras and other corrupt Central American countries with bucketsful of cash. This would be laughable if it weren’t so pathetic. It is a dereliction of duty for the president of the United States to potentially endanger the health and security of the American people he is sworn to protect by stimulating an uncontrollable surge of illegal immigrants into this country. And it is cruel for the Biden administration to lure unaccompanied minors to take a very treacherous journey north with no idea of what awaits them. The right thing to do for all concerned is for the Biden administration to send an unambiguous message that those crossing into the United States illegally, including children, will be promptly sent home in a safe and humane manner. Democrats Will Kill the Goose That Lays the Golden Vaccines
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:50 PM PDT by Newt Gingrich and Joe DeSantis: Given the Left’s desire to ban some of the works of Dr. Seuss, it is not surprising that its members also seem intent on discounting the lessons of another classic children’s story. In the Aesop’s fable, The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs, a farmer has a goose that lays a golden egg every day. Instead of being happy with this miracle, the farmer decides to kill the goose assuming there must be an even larger deposit of gold inside. However, the goose is no different on the inside than any other goose, and the farmer is left with nothing. The story describes the folly of short-sighted decision-making that destroys something that is predictably and routinely valuable. Unfortunately, this is precisely what Democrats seem intent on doing to America’s biopharmaceutical ecosystem – at precisely the time when it has proven most essential. Thanks to a unique partnership between public sector investment at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a robustly capitalized private sector biopharmaceutical industry, the United States has created an engine for new cures and treatments that is the envy of the world. Both parts of this engine are essential. NIH funds the basic science that identifies promising leads for drug development, and the private sector takes those findings and sees if they can be used to develop new treatments. This latter step must be funded by the private sector because it can move much faster and more creatively than the public sector’s grant application process – and there is simply more money in the private economy than in the public sector. The value of this public private partnership has just been proven in a spectacular way. Biopharmaceutical companies were able to take theory developed with publicly financed research into mRNA and use the private sector’s considerable resources and agility to develop vaccines for COVID-19. Coupled with a significant streamlining of regulations, vaccines were developed and approved less than a year after COVID-19 was first identified. Of course, this success was made possible by President Donald Trump’s Operation Warp Speed, which NIH Director Francis Collins said helped create vaccines “faster than it’s ever been [done] before,” and “was an incredibly important step forward that the administration deserves credit for.” Now, even while taking credit for the distribution of these vaccines under President Joe Biden, Democrats want to destroy this critical partnership in the short-sighted search for a nonexistent reward. According to The Hill, key Democrats, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (VT) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (CT), are pressuring the United States to support a radical proposal at the World Trade Organization. They seek to strip patent protections for COVID-19 vaccines. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is also reported to have expressed support for this measure. In other words, they want to kill the goose that lays the golden vaccines. It is hard to imagine a more destructive step for the current pandemic and future drug development. First, as numerous experts have pointed out, stripping patent protections would not meaningfully increase manufacturing capacity. That’s because there are a limited number of places with the infrastructure needed to safely make the vaccines, and they are already being employed to do so. Even Bill Gates, whose foundation is dedicated to vaccine distribution in developing countries, has said, “There’s not a single additional vaccine that would have come out of [the WTO effort].” Second, and more fundamentally, the Left consistently fails to understand the kind of incentives that their big government, anti-capitalist economics create. Even if new manufacturing capabilities are brought online, removing the patent protections will simply disincentivize the current patent holders from continuing to produce their vaccines once the wealthier countries of the world are fully vaccinated. So, without patent protections there will be fewer available vaccines for developing countries than if protections remain in place. That’s in the short term. Removing patent protections would also send a chilling signal across the biopharmaceutical industry, drying up investment and research and development dollars. This would delay or even prevent entirely the next generation of treatments. This same criticism also applies to most of the Democrats’ proposals regarding drug prices. They sacrifice the future to benefit the present – and even that short-term benefit is minimal. For instance, Democratic Rep. Frank Pallone (NJ-6), who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee, has pledged to take up a bill “similar” to HR 3, which passed the House in 2020 but went nowhere in the Republican-controlled Senate. The White House recently signaled it may use pieces of this bill, essentially taking money out of Medicare to fund the infrastructure package. HR3 was a grab bag of destructive policies that would cripple biopharmaceutical development by drying up investment in the future. This includes allowing Medicare to dictate the price of drugs. The Democrats refer to it as negotiating prices, but the way the bill is structured, manufacturers must accept the government’s suggested prices or face punitive taxes on the gross sales of the drugs. Defenders of this idea protest that in other countries, governments set the prices of drugs. This is true. It is also true that these same government routinely refuse to pay for drugs that are available to patients in the United States. That’s because the government is only interested in paying what a drug is worth to the government, not to patients. Patients in those countries, at least, do have some recourse: They can come to America to be treated. But if America follows the same path, where will American patients go to get treatments that are never developed? Where will we go if Democrats kill the goose that lays the golden eggs? The Fall Of Chile Is A Warning To America
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:22 PM PDT
by Stephen Moore: Back in the 1970s, the nation of Chile embarked on one of the boldest sets of free market economic reforms in history. The government called in the Chicago Boys, as they were called, led by Milton Friedman and other University of Chicago free market economists. They were given a free hand to redesign the Chilean economic system with property rights, a low flat tax, privatization of the Social Security system and industry deregulation. In 1991, Friedman wrote that Chile now “has all three things: political freedom, human freedom and economic freedom. Chile will continue to be an interesting experiment to watch to see whether it can keep all three.” For four decades, the experiment worked better than anyone could have imagined. According to a study by economist Axel Kaiser for the Cato Institute: “Between 1975 and 2015 per capita income in Chile quadrupled to $23,000, the highest rate in Latin America. As a result, from the early 1980s to 2014 poverty fell from 45 percent to 8 percent.” Chile became one of the wealthiest nations in South America. And it happened in three decades, an eye blink of history. The Marxists and intellectual class of Latin America always hated the free market reforms. They disparaged the Chicago Boys as “fascists.” They spent decades attacking the policies (with the stooges in the American media echoing their protests), even as Chile became the jewel of South America. The Marxists invented a narrative of “inequality”: “The rich were getting richer, and the poor were getting poorer, and capitalism is evil.” They infiltrated all of Chile’s cultural institutions: the media, the schools, the universities, the Catholic Church, the arts, the unions and even the corporate boardrooms. They spread their poisonous creed of collectivism to the populace. Is any of this sounding familiar to our situation today? Eventually, the leftists pulled off a political coup. In 2013, the left won the Chilean presidency. The free market reforms were systematically replaced with “spread the wealth” platitudes. In October 2020, voters approved a rewrite of the constitution, and now property rights and the rule of law are in danger. Chile is now in economic free fall in less than 6 months. The poor are getting crushed. The rich are pulling their money out of the country. They have arrived at “equality”: Nearly everyone is suffering. Meanwhile, back in America, we have an economic transformation of our own going on. The Biden administration promises to help the middle class by handing out trillions of dollars of free money to citizens and paying people more money for not working than working. We will borrow trillions of dollars and pray that the Chinese continue to buy up our bonds and that our currency holds up. Many of our constitutional protections and congressional rules of behavior, such as the filibuster, which protects the rights of the minority, may be headed to the shredder. The election laws are getting rewritten to benefit, significantly, the party now in power — the Democrats. The House has passed a bill requiring millions of working-class people to join unions and pay dues. The left is saying, don’t worry, this compulsion is going to help the working class. Sure. A sock-it-to-the-rich tax increase is coming that will make the productive class and the job creators pay their “fair share” with tax rates of 50%, 60% and 70%. Will this story have a happy ending? The answer to that question might be contained in the frightening example of what happened in Chile. It is what our children and college students should be learning in the classrooms — fat chance. The left runs our schools now, too. Tags: Stephen Moore, The Fall Of Chile, Is A Warning, To AmericaTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. When Minorities Vote GOP, the Media Smears Republicans as Racists
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:55 PM PDT Daniel Greenfield: In just one week, the Washington Post churned out two op-eds on the same theme, “The GOP is Now Just the Party of White Grievance” and “The Republican Party is Making Jim Crow Segregationists Proud”. The D.C. Democrat paper doesn’t bother clarifying why Democrats from two generations ago would be thrilled that 1 in 5 black men voted for President Trump. Ever since the election, the media has been beating its narrative drum with one message. CNN howls that Republicans are the worst racists. The New York Times insists they’re even more racist than that. And MSNBC will counter that only white racists would vote Republican. The most famous media exponent of the “white grievance” line is Stuart Stevens: Romney’s senior strategist, who went on to join the Lincoln Project. Stevens claimed on MSNBC that the GOP, “went down a path to embrace white grievance as its core” and that, “of the Americans who are 15 years and under, the majority are nonwhite. They’re gonna be nonwhite when they turn 18 and start voting and that’s the end of the Republican party as we know it.” But David Shor, Obama’s battleground state election analyst, pointed out, “I don’t think a lot of people expected Donald Trump’s GOP to have a much more diverse support base than Mitt Romney’s did in 2012. But that’s what happened. “My party obviously has an embarrassingly small share of African American votes,” Senator Romney claimed after embarrassingly participating in a Black Lives Matter rally. President Trump had done better than Romney with both black and Latino voters the first time around. And he improved on those numbers the second time around. As Shor notes, among Democrats, “Hispanic support dropped by 8 to 9 percent” and “there’s evidence that there was something like a 5 percent decline in Asian American support for Democrats.” 1 in 3 Latino men and 1 in 5 black men voted for President Trump in 2020. Meanwhile over half of the House minority freshmen are Republicans. This is the first time that more House minority freshmen have been Republicans than Democrats. The Jim Crow segregationists must be really proud of that one. As Henry Olsen, the author of The Working Class Republican noted, “Every seat Republicans have flipped from blue to red has been captured by a woman or a minority.” These are strange numbers for the party of “white grievance”. The Democrats and their media keep shouting that Republicans are becoming whiter even as Republican voters and elected officials are more diverse than they have been in a generation. As Shor noted, Democrats gained “roughly 7 percent among white college graduates” and lost support among black, Hispanic, and Asian voters by 2, 9, and 5 percent respectively. If any party out there is getting whiter, it’s the Democrats. And that has them worried. These are some of the numbers that explain why Democrats are doubling down on accusations of Republican racism. These smears don’t reflect the real world, they’re a messaging operation by a radical party that bet its future on minority voters only to discover it’s losing its grip on them. Democrat efforts to connect with minority voters backfired. As Shor noted, police defunding led to “conservative Hispanic voters who’d been voting for us despite their ideological inclinations” to begin “voting more like conservative whites”. And trying to win over Hispanic voters with open borders was an even bigger disaster. “Asking voters whether they lean toward Biden and Trump, and then emphasizing the Democratic position on immigration, often caused Biden’s share of support among Latino respondents to decline.” So much for immigration pandering. Black leaders and voters rejected police defunding. By the time the election was drawing near, Biden and the Democrats were forced to denounce race riots and reject police defunding. Police defunding and open borders are only popular with AOC’s base of white hipsters. Unable to meaningfully connect with minority voters, Democrats have defaulted back to accusing Republicans of racism. And insisting, all evidence to the contrary, that they’re a white party. It’s not only a lie, but it shows the level of desperation and contempt by the Democrats. The Democrats have defined white grievance as opposition to critical race theory and their culture war. But neither are especially popular with minority voters. Going to war against Dr. Seuss may thrill the hearts of AOC’s white hipster base, but black and Hispanic parents want the Democrats to stand up to the teachers’ unions and reopen schools. San Francisco’s obsession with renaming closed schools even led to a rebuke from its black female mayor. The Democrat culture war is based around generating racially polarizing moments, but they have nothing to do with the real concerns of most minority voters. They’re the noise of a college-educated lefty elite, white, black, and otherwise, talking about its ideological obsessions. Eliminating Dr. Seuss doesn’t frame Republicans as the party of white grievance or racism. Instead it shows that the Democrats are unserious radicals who don’t intend to do anything for minority voters, and can’t even prioritize delivering the financial benefits that they promised. But, much like Robin DiAngelo’s racist tract, White Fragility, when the Washington Post serially accuses Republicans of being white racists, it isn’t talking to minorities. The Post has fairly few minority readers, despite claiming to cover a city that is majority black. But that’s not the city that the paper is built to cover. The Post is a government paper and its demographic are officials, elected and unelected, and the swamp of contractors, consultants, and lobbyists around them. White people are telling other white people that Republicans are the party of white people. The strategy is less about winning over minority voters than making white college-educated voters feel like racists if they even think about voting Republican. Critical race theory and cancel culture are the barbed wire on the plantation for white voters. Democrats kept black voters in by telling them that Republicans are racists. Now just as minority voters are beginning to drift over the invisible fence, the Democrats are telling college-educated white voters that Republicans are racist. Racism is the plantation’s fence. Minority voters on the plantation had been taught to fear racism outside the invisible fence while college-educated white voters are being taught to fear the hidden racism lurking deep in their own whiteness. But the fear strategy, fear of the outside world and fear of your own dark side, has its limits. The Democrats have gone from the party of, “The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself” to the party of, “Fear thy neighbor” and worse still, “Fear thyself.” The party’s pitch has been distilled into fear and hatred. As more minorities vote Republican, the Democrats can only respond by ramping up the racism smears that have become their only real argument for the minority vote. The more minorities vote Republican, the more the Democrat racism smears fly in the media. Nightmare Narratives
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 03:12 PM PDT by Paul Jacob: Beware the America we see on our screens. A friend posted something on Facebook tying three recent stories together, what he called “brazenly false narratives many progressives have peddled.” The first being that those who attacked the Capitol on January 6th were treated more gently than Black Lives Matter activists would have been. Back in January, then President-Elect Biden made a point of offering this stark racial takeaway, sans evidence.* The second narrative? That the Atlanta shooting spree was motivated by anti-Asian hatred, six of the nine people shot, eight killed, being Asian. But there is yet no evidence of racism; another, quite different motive appears to have spurred the massacre. Nonetheless, on NBC Meet the Press last Sunday, Princeton University Professor Eddie Glaude Jr. said the Atlanta shooting was part of “this panic around the whiteness of this country.” The Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart echoed that emotion in a weekend column, “Asian Americans must not fight white terror alone.” Yet, weeks ago, The Post informed readers, “Tensions between Asian and Black communities also date back decades and have been reignited by videos that show Black perpetrators in many of the recent attacks on Asian Americans.” The terror is diverse. Lastly, the Boulder shooter was taken alive — which “must” mean (if you are catching on) that he is . . . white. Some referred to the killer as a “white Christian terrorist” . . . problem being (you guessed it) he turned out to be a Syrian immigrant — and Muslim. Causing mass tweet deletes, including by Vice-President Harris’s niece.** Like me, you probably meet a lot of nice people, white and black and Asian and Middle Eastern . . . of both sexes, various genders, differing religions . . . all the time . . . before the pandemic, anyway. But no film at 11. This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob. Tags: Paul Jacob, Common Sense, Nightmare NarrativesTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. What This Arizona Sheriff Sees While Border Crisis Worsens
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:49 PM PDT by Rachel del Guidice: A border sheriff in Arizona says his county has hit a crisis point with the surge of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. from Mexico. “We went from a year ago manageable [and] calm to unmanageable chaos and crisis,” Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels told The Daily Signal in a phone interview Wednesday. “Checkpoints are all down,” said Dannels, whose county is about two hours from Tucson by car. “There’s no more checkpoints [for illegal immigrants] in our county. Our Border Patrol station has become a care center for the agents who run the checkpoints … so we’ve lost agents in the field.” After being sworn in Jan. 20, President Joe Biden signed an executive order halting construction of President Donald Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. “When President Biden took office, within hours of taking office, he had the executive orders and [in] one of them he declared the southwest border not an emergency,” Dannels recalled. “They stopped the radio sensors and technology lighting. And most of all, it sent a message … that the border is open,” he said, adding: “That’s causing us great grief.” In an interview Wednesday on “The Daily Signal Podcast,” Mark Morgan, acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Trump administration, said statistics show illegal crossings at the border have exploded. “Last month, in the month of February, they saw over 100,000 apprehensions of people trying to illegally enter the border,” said Morgan, currently a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation. “I think in March, you’re going to see that number skyrocket—120,000, 130,000 [arrests at the border], if not reaching the numbers at the height of the crisis that we saw in 2019,” he said. Dannels, the Cochise County sheriff, said his community is concerned about what is happening along the 83 miles the county shares with Mexico. “They’re in unrest with the fact that they don’t know what’s going on there now … with the erosion of prevention and enforcement programs,” he said. Dannels, first elected sheriff as a Republican in 2012 and reelected in 2016 and 2020, has served in law enforcement for 36 years. “My days are spent addressing community concerns, talking to media now with the national hype [that] just happened because of the decision, and last but not least, is overseeing an operation that has increased immigration [and] border issues,” Dannels told The Daily Signal. He said chaos at the border also has brought more drugs and crime to Cochise County. “There are more calls of [illegal immigrants trespassing] on private properties,” Dannels said. “You name it, I mean, drug smuggling is up. … We were 20 months without a drug load [moving] in this county, and that’s something which is very disturbing to me on the public safety side.” What is happening is a marked change from when Trump was in office, the sheriff said. “So we’re just more guarded,” Dannels said. “We’re more focused on the fact that we’re dealing with border crimes more than we have. A year ago, we didn’t have this.” Tags: Rachel del Guidice, Arizona Sheriff, Border Crisis WorsensTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. A Tale of Two Shootings
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:43 PM PDT
by Judd Garrett: Last week, a man walked into massage parlors in Atlanta, Georgia, opened fire, and killed 8 people, 6 of whom were Asian-American women. Vice President Kamala Harris was quick to turn the Atlanta shooting into a racial issue. Standing on foreign soil, she told the Irish Prime Minister that the Atlanta shooting “speaks to a larger issue” referring to “violence”, but then, she quickly pivoted and tied the motivation of the shooter to anti-Asian racism when she referred to the, “increasing level of hate crime against our Asian-American brothers and sisters.” Even though, the motivation had yet to be determined, V.P. Harris assumed the motivation simply by looking at the race of the shooter and the victims. She went on to say, “Racism is real in America… Xenophobia is real in America… Asian Americans have been attacked and scapegoated.” She very adeptly, yet falsely linked the shooting to an anti-Asian sentiment stemming from Covid-19. Joe Biden also tied anti-Asian racism to the shooting in Atlanta when he said, “Whatever the motivation, we know this: Too many Asian-Americans have been walking up and down the streets and worrying, waking up each morning of the past year feeling their safety and the safety of their loved ones is at stake… They’ve been attacked, blamed, scapegoated and harassed,” Even though he admitted to not knowing the motive of the shooting, Biden irresponsibly attached a racial component to the shooting. Biden and Harris’ words were thrown back in America’s face by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying, “Vice President Harris was telling the truth about the United States. In recent years, hate crimes and racism against Asians have been on the rise in the United States, and many tragedies have taken place.” And at last week’s summit with China in Alaska, Chinese diplomat, Yang Jiechi, used that forum to lecture America on human rights, “We hope that the United States will do better on human rights,” while also claiming that black people are being “slaughtered” in the United States. Our leaders’ constant need to view our country through the lens of race, and to paint the United States as racist, has caused the United States to cede the moral high ground to one of the worst human rights violators in the world, China. After all this damage was done, the FBI has determined that the motivation of the Atlanta shooting was not racial. The shooter was an emotionally disturbed sex addict, and he saw the massage parlors as temptations he wanted to eliminate. As with many of these types of shooters, mental illness played a large role in why he committed this violent act. In his attempt to tie the shooting to anti-Asian sentiment stemming from the origin of Covid-19, Joe Biden said, “They’re warning again what we’ve always known: Words have consequences.” Too bad, he did not temper his words accordingly. Kamala Harris paralleled anti-Asian sentiment to anti-Muslim sentiment following the 9/11 attacks, “People who are perceived as Muslim know what it was like to live in our country after 9/11.” Using the experiences of Muslim-Americans, Harris made the point that it is wrong for people to impugn an entire race or religion for the evil acts of a few members of that race and religion, except when you are assailing the entire white race for the crime committed by one white person. On Monday, a man walked into a Boulder, Colorado grocery store, opened fire, and killed 10 people. Kamala Harris’ niece, Meena Harris followed her aunt’s lead by quickly using that incident to condemn an entire race and gender when she twitted, “violent white men are the biggest terrorist threat to our country.” She just as quickly deleted her tweet after finding out that the mass shooting was actually committed by a Middle Eastern Muslim immigrant, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. Would she have deleted her tweet if the shooting had in fact been committed by a white man? Of course not. The tweet would have been true in her mind, because the shooting would have validated her prejudices. This is called confirmation bias; the “tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms or supports one’s prior beliefs or values”. We use confirmation bias far too often in this country, especially in reaction to these types of tragedies. The desire to conflate the incident committed by one person onto that person’s entire race in order to confirm our prejudices about that race. Would tweeting, “violent Middle Eastern Muslims are the biggest terrorist threat to our country,” as a response to the Boulder shooting be appropriate? Of course not. That would be another example of confirmation bias that promotes racism. How many people were happy when they found out the Atlanta shooter was white? How may were upset? How many people were happy or disappointed when the Colorado shooter turned out to be a Middle Eastern Muslim? Should it really matter what the race of the person committing this type of crime is? Why does race become such a focus when discussing these incidences? Why is race continually injected into issues where it is clear that race is not the issue? These reactions are all a result of our need for confirmation bias. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa’s brother, Ali, claimed that Ahmad “exhibited signs of paranoid mental illness” and was “very anti-social.” Both shooters were dealing with mental illness and emotional issues. That was their connection. Not their race, not their skin color, not their gender, but their mental illness. So, politicians focusing on the race and not on the mental illness of these shooters are doing nothing to prevent the next one of these crimes from happening. Only a rare percentage of the population commits violent crimes. In 2019, there were 366 violent crimes per 100,000 people which is 0.3% of the population, meaning for every 273 people you meet, 1 is potentially a violent criminal. Even though that is number is too high, it is too low when trying to conflate violent acts of individual people onto entire races or entire groups. There is an even rarer percent of the population who commit mass shootings. In the United States since 1982 there have been 121 mass shootings which mean 0.000037% of the population committed mass shootings over the last 40 years. One mass shooting is one too many, but to use 121 incidences over 40 years in a country of 330 million people to make claims about and disparage entire segments of the population is not only factually wrong but racially divisive. If we are going to divide people, we should divide them between those who commit violent crimes and those who don’t. And what we would find is that a very small percent (less than 1%) of white people, black people, Hispanics, Asians, Middle Eastern people, Muslims commit violent crimes; and the vast majority (more than 99%) of white people, black people, Hispanics, Asians, Middle Eastern people, Muslims do not commit violent crimes. So, all this racial posturing and finger-pointing that we have seen from our leaders over the last week, provides zero insight into the causes and the nature of the violent crimes committed but gives tremendous clarity into the true nature of those who want to exploit the violence and suffering to expand their own power. It will only be when we stop viewing the world, and every incident through the lens of race that we as a country will be able to break down the barriers that divide us, and can come together on the things that unite us; such as belief in our Constitution, love of country, love of family, our common humanity and our desire for goodness. Those are, and will always be vitally more important than our pigmentation. Tags: Judd Garrett, Tale of Two ShootingsTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. Is This Even America, Anymore?
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PDT House-passed bills would create a country almost unrecognizable. by Catherine Mortensen: In two short months the U.S. House of Representatives has passed four bills that will radically change America. The first, a Covid bailout bill has already been signed into law. The other three bills are scheduled for debate in the Senate:
The Covid bailout bill is an attempt by Democrats to introduce European-style socialism by normalizing huge government handouts for every American, untethered to work. In the short term, politicians see nothing but upside. Their constituents are fat and happy with cash burning a hole in their pockets. My daughter and her husband got $2,800 and are on track to spend it before it even hits their bank account. A good friend told me her sister has five children under the age of 18 and their family is looking at banking more than $10,000 in stimulus, or “stymie” cash as many are calling it. And politicians on both sides of the aisle are floating the idea of a basic universal income. That has long been a dream of the progressive Left – to give every American money with no requirement for work. Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning said we are slouching toward socialism. “During this pandemic, the federal government has been empowered to just send people checks without any recourse,” Manning explained. “The real danger is that politicians and voters will get hooked on government ‘stymies.’ When that happens, it will destroy the American work ethic which is at the core of our American success story.” H.R. 1, another partisan bill Democrats call the “For the People” Act, would, according to the <Honest Elections Project, eliminate or weaken protections against voter fraud at a time most voters want lawmakers to take the opposite approach. Large majorities rejected both particular provisions and the overall direction of H.R. 1. Only 29% of voters know anything at all about this expansive legislative attempt to reshape American elections, but when they are informed, only 28% support its passage. If Congress passes the “For the People Act,” it will do so in spite of them. Voters want credible elections that balance access and security. The National Review calls H.R. 1 “a partisan assault on American democracy.” It is a massive power grab by Democrats to retain majorities of all branches of government and must be defeated. Americans for Limited Government is backing a package of election reform measures in the Arizona legislature that would protect election integrity and is urging other states to introduce and pass similar measures. Our entire system depends on trust in the election process because our government depends upon the consent of the governed for its legitimacy. American Dream and Promise Act and the Farm Workforce Modernization Act would provide mass amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants. This comes at a time when our Customs and Border Patrol agents and our immigration system are completely overwhelmed. Even more concerning, illegal immigrants are being released into America even after testing positive for COVID-19. The first bill, H.R. 6, would provide green cards and a path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants, including violent gang members. The other legislation would expand the H-2A Temporary Agricultural Worker visa program and grant agriculture workers a special certified worker status allowing them to stay in the United States for five and a half years. In addition, this status can be renewed and individuals may apply for U.S. citizenship. This irresponsible legislation will only encourage more illegal immigration and worsen the crisis. Joe Biden’s policies have directly led to this crisis, and Democrats in the House are only working to exacerbate it. Moving forward, we must immediately halt catch and release, resume construction of our Southern border wall, and reinstitute the remain in Mexico policy. Our country feels perilously close to slipping away. Patriots everywhere are alarmed at what is happening, but our efforts to stem the tide of socialism often feel futile. We are in a fight to save our nation and we cannot give up. Our children and grandchildren may one day ask what we did in the great fight for freedom. I am reminded of the St Crispin’s Day speech, part of William Shakespeare‘s Henry V. On the eve of the Battle of Agincourt, which fell on Saint Crispin’s Day , Henry V urges his men, who were vastly outnumbered by the French, to recall how the English had previously inflicted great defeats upon the French. The final lines of that speech apply to us today. This story shall the good man teach his son; Tags: Catherine Mortensen, Americans for Limited government, Is This Even America, Anymore? To share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. 48.) NBC MORNING RUNDOWN
Friday, March 26, 2021
Good morning, NBC News readers.
Georgia’s restrictive new voting laws prompted fierce protest, plus more on America’s immigration policy and an unusual light show that streaked across the Pacific Northwest last night.
Here’s what we’re watching this Friday morning.
Georgia state troopers arrested Democratic state Rep. Park Cannon on Thursday after she knocked on Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s statehouse office door as he signed a controversial election bill into law in a closed-door ceremony.
Video of the incident shows Cannon, who as a lawmaker also works at the statehouse, being handcuffed after she knocked on Kemp’s door, arguing for transparency at the bill signing.
Cannon was removed from the Capitol and taken to the Fulton County Jail where she was charged with two misdemeanors under state law, according to police.
She was released Thursday evening, but the incident drew attention to the sweeping regulations Georgia Republicans passed after weeks of debate about how to tighten voting laws.
The new law adds a host of restrictions, from requiring identification for mail voting and curtailing voting hours to making it illegal to take food or water to voters in line.
Georgia is one of the first states to pass major voting restrictions after last year’s election, which saw Democrats take control of the U.S. Senate after two runoffs in the state. A flurry of bills have been introduced by Republican-controlled state legislatures to tighten voting laws after former President Donald Trump lost the election and baselessly challenged the outcome.
Georgia Democrats vociferously opposed the bill’s passage, with Stacey Abrams calling the law “nothing less than Jim Crow 2.0.”

FIRST READ: How Biden benefits by being measured against Trump standards
Out of all the low bars President Joe Biden has cleared over the past year – “He’s going to stumble at the debate,” “He won’t get out of his basement,” 100 million shots in 100 days – Thursday’s White House news conference might have been the lowest yet.
The reason: After fewer than 100 days in office, Biden is still being compared, explicitly and implicitly, to his predecessor.

Biden made little news at the press conference – other than revising his goal to 200 million shots in 100 days, opening the door to possibly eliminating the filibuster and saying that his next agenda item is on infrastructure.
He largely stayed on message, using a question on immigration/guns/climate change and turning it back to the coronavirus. (“The most urgent problem facing the American people, I stated from the outset, was COVID-19 and the economic dislocation for millions and millions of Americans. And so that’s why I put all my focus in the beginning.”)
And he defended himself on complicated topics like the situation at the border – without turning to insults or trying to steer clear of difficult lines of questioning. “Twenty-eight percent increase in children to the border in my administration; 31 percent in the last year of — in 2019, before the pandemic, in the Trump administration. It happens every single, solitary year.” (Here’s what factually right and wrong about those numbers.)
That’s in sharp contrast to his predecessor, who at his first formal press conference in Feb. 2017:
- falsely claimed he won “the biggest Electoral College win since Ronald Reagan”;
- boasted that no previous president – not even FDR – “has done what we’ve done” in his early days in office;
- and attacked the media, saying: “The press has become so dishonest that if we don’t talk about it, we are doing a tremendous disservice to the American people. Tremendous disservice.”
This is a large part of the honeymoon that new presidents get; their performances get judged against their most recent predecessor.
But that changes the longer they’re in office.
And that’s when the bar starts getting higher.

Previewing Biden’s first formal presser
Also at yesterday’s news conference, Biden assailed GOP-sponsored legislation across the country that would curb voting rights and access.
“What I’m worried about is how un-American this whole initiative is. It’s sick,” he said. “This makes Jim Crow look like Jim Eagle.”
And just hours later, Republican Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation into law in Georgia that would, per NBC’s Jane Timm:
- require ID for mail-in voting;
- make it illegal to give water and food to voters waiting in law;
- allow the state Election Board to take over county election administration;
- and end most early voting at 5:00 pm ET
Of course, this new law comes after Georgia Republicans lost the state in November’s presidential election, and after they lost two Senate runoffs in January.
And it comes after Trump’s false claims that there was fraud and widespread irregularities in the election.
As we put it earlier this month: If at first you don’t succeed, try, try — to change how the contest is conducted.

Talking policy with Benjy: Are Democrats going to pass anything else?
There are essentially two procedural tracks for the Democratic agenda right now, both of which run through a small number of moderates, especially Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va. and Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz.
One track involves legislation that can pass only if the filibuster is eliminated or changed. The focal point of that effort is voting rights, where Democrats are advancing a sweeping bill that also addresses campaign finance, government ethics and gerrymandering. The filibuster also likely stands in the way of Democratic priorities on guns, immigration, and labor.
There’s considerable action on this front. Biden took his most aggressive stance yet in discussing filibuster changes at his press conference. Two of the remaining moderate holdouts, Senators Angus King, I-Maine and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.signaled their likely support for tweaking the filibuster. Manchin has hinted he’s open to filibuster reforms, but not exactly what kind. He also put forward criteria for a narrower voting rights bill on Thursday, which activists still found encouraging, but also emphasized finding bipartisan agreement, which is unlikely.
The second track involves Biden’s economic agenda, much of which can likely pass through reconciliation with only 50 votes. The White House is reportedly weighing$3 trillion in investments in infrastructure, clean energy, child care, and community college, among other areas, and a variety of taxes on corporations, wealthy investors, and high incomes to pay for it.
The news there also revolves around Manchin, who wants an “enormous” infrastructure package, but one that’s bipartisan and at least partially offset with taxes or spending cuts. The White House is considering whether they might break up their plan so they can offer to work with the GOP on infrastructure spending in one bill and then pass more progressive priorities (and likely any tax increases) through reconciliation.
One theme worth watching: Democrats considered swing votes on these issues are putting pressure on the GOP to take the next step. Manchin has signaled he’ll support a partisan infrastructure bill via reconciliation if Republicans won’t play ball.King hinted in an op-ed this week that his GOP colleagues could save the filibuster by showing they can produce bipartisan deals on key issues like immigration.

ICYMI: What ELSE is happening in the world?
A Democratic state representative in Georgia was arrested after knocking on the door of Gov. Kemp’s statehouse office as he signed the bill into law.
Biden said yesterday that an influx of migrant children happens at the border every year. Here’s what’s right and wrong about that claim.
Experts say there’s a fundamental problem with U.S. immigration laws — they’re not adapted when they need to be.
Parler says it warned the FBI in advance of “specific threats of violence” on the Capitol.
Far-right extremists have a new agenda — vaccination conspiracy theories.
POLITICO gets seven GOP senators on the record saying they’ve spoken to Biden recently and he remains mentally sharp.
Yet more trouble for Andrew Cuomo: A health industry executive with close ties to the governor also received early hard-to-get coronavirus testing.

62.) 1440 DAILY DIGEST
No images? Click here Good morning. It’s Friday, March 26, and we’re covering New York’s move toward marijuana legalization, unemployment, and Egypt’s maritime logjam. Have feedback? Let us know at hello@join1440.com. First time reading? Sign up here. NEED TO KNOWNew York Eyes LegalizationNew York officials reached an agreement yesterday that would potentially legalize recreational marijuana in the state, according to reports. The proposal would allow delivery of the drug and allow lounges where patrons could buy and consume cannabis—though the establishments would be prohibited from selling alcohol. The deal would also allow individuals to grow up to six plants at home for personal use. If fully implemented, analysts project the new laws would generate more than $300M in annual revenue via taxes. New York would join 14 other states and the District of Columbia in legalizing small amounts of the plant for adult recreational use (see overview), while 35 states and the District of Columbia allow it for medical purposes. The use of marijuana is still technically prohibited for any purpose under federal law. If passed, the new law likely won’t take effect until 2022. Unemployment Claims Fall An estimated 684,000 Americans filed initial unemployment claims last week, down nearly 100,000 claims from the previous week. While historically high, it marks the first time initial claims have fallen below 700,000 since March 14 of last year, when pandemic-induced shutdowns began to ripple through the economy. The figure is also slightly lower than the prepandemic record of 695,000 claims set in 1982 (see historic data). Despite the improvement, analysts say challenges remain in the labor market. Those continuing to claim benefits under all programs—a better proxy for unemployment—rose by 730,000 to more than 18.9 million. About one-third of those recipients are estimated to have been unemployed for longer than six months and face additional difficultly in returning to work. Meanwhile, new COVID-19 cases in the US sit around 50,000 per day, with daily deaths just under 1,000 (with 546,822 total deaths reported). The US is averaging 2.5 million vaccinations per day, with more than 87 million Americans having received at least one shot (33% of the adult population); see how your state is doing. Suez Canal StoppageA massive container ship that ran aground Wednesday in Egypt’s Suez Canal remains stuck, clogging one of the world’s busiest maritime trade lanes for a third day. The vessel, named the Ever Given, went off course amid high winds and poor visibility, ultimately getting both its bow and stern stuck on land while its middle floats in the canal. See the stuck ship from space here. The 1,300-foot-long vessel is blocking a single-lane stretch of the 120-mile-long canal, which bisects Egypt and gives ships a shortcut between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans (see map). More than 10% of the world’s maritime trade passes through the canal each day—more than $9B in goods. Officials say it may take weeks to free the ship, but hope a high tide over the weekend may help efforts. Read about the incredible logistics needed to dislodge the vessel. American Education: Child Indoctrination, Struggle Sessions and Debt Slavery
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:00 PM PDT Seemingly overnight, a large segment of America has gone insane. We’re not talking about the culture of paranoia and safety that has metastasized in the wake of COVID-19 hysteria. We’re talking about the ideological shift, particularly on cultural issues, that has occurred since the start of the Obama Administration. |
After 10 Years of Civil War in Syria, US (Quietly) Declares Defeat but Won’t Go Home
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:00 PM PDT This March marks the 10-year anniversary of the Arab Spring and the protests that rocked Syria, which were a starting point for the ongoing civil war. That conflict has led to over half a million deaths and nearly 13 million people displaced, according to some estimates. |
Biden Administration Urges Supreme Court To Let Cops Enter Homes And Seize Guns Without A Warrant
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:00 PM PDT The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday will hear oral argument in Caniglia v. Strom, a case that could have sweeping consequences for policing, due process, and mental health, with the Biden Administration and attorneys general from nine states urging the High Court to uphold warrantless gun confiscation. But what would ultimately become a major Fourth Amendment case began with an elderly couple’s spat over a coffee mug. |
FBI Data Shows Knives Kill More People Than Rifles
Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:00 PM PDT Two recent shootings in Atlanta, Georgia and Boulder, Colorado are fueling team-left’s long desired ban on “assault-style” rifles like the AR-15. But, according to data from the FBI, far more murders are committed with handguns, knives, or even bare hands. |

BREAK THE INTERNET
This was a bad week online
This week was, unquestionably, a bad one. First, we saw the quick rise and fall of a Twitter Character of the Day: The guy who says he found shrimp tails in his box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal. The photos he posted of said cinnamon toasted shrimp tails went viral and led to a public statement from the CTC brand. The story had a few twists—he’s married to Topanga from Boy Meets World? His rap name is “Hot Karl?”—before it took a darker turn. On Wednesday, multiple women began tweeting about their experiences with Jensen Karp. They claim he has a history of abusive and manipulative behavior. Karp has not publicly commented on the claims.
This story is, unfortunately, not rare. The first big Twitter character of 2021, Bean Dad, was promptly Milkshake Duck’d. And we’ve seen many of these instances over the years of a person going viral before we start to learn about their past. Karp was also not the only man that people called out this week; David Dobrik posted another apology after a former member of his Vlog Squad, Dominykas Zeglaitis, was accused of rape (more on that, below). But people were less than satisfied with his apology video. And then men’s publication MEL magazine (where a few former Daily Dot staffers worked) announced it was laying off its editorial staff and seeking a new owner after its partnership with Dollar Shave Club ended. MEL regularly covered weird internet culture stories, and people mourned the abrupt ending. Then the week got even worse as news broke on Thursday afternoon that Jessica Walter, who played the best character on Arrested Development, died at the age of 80. See? Bad week. And we still have all of Friday left.

Does numerology actually work?
Considering that TikTok has been saturated with astrology lately, it’s no surprise that people are becoming interested in numerology, too. This ancient practice is thought to be created by the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who believed that everything in the world could be measured by numbers.

The issue with the David Dobrik apology
David Dobrik posted another apology video on Monday, addressing his initial response to allegations of rape against a former member of his Vlog Squad.
As reported last week by Insider, a woman claims that in 2018, Vlog Squad member Dominykas Zeglaitis, known as Durte Dom, raped her during a party. In a seven-minute video, Dobrik explains that he wanted to apologize more respectfully, and that he “fully” believes the woman’s allegation, which was not really the sentiment in his first apology. Dobrik also acknowledged other women who had voiced their own concerns about Zeglaitis in 2018, and he apologized for not believing them, as well as going on to make jokes about sexual assault for content. Many commenters called out the fact that Dobrik is doing the apologizing and taking accountability but not Zeglaitis, who has been accused of a crime. YouTuber Chris Klemens pointed out the impulse in vlog culture to call allegations of grooming or assault “drama.”

CULTURAL OBSESSIONS
TikTokers are making fun of Wonder Woman’s music
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is full of Snyder’s trademark slow-mo, a film technique he uses for both storytelling and flourishes. That technique, along with Wonder Woman’s depiction in the film, is fueling a new TikTok trend.
Composer Tom Holkenborg included a new theme for Wonder Woman in the Snyder Cut called “Wonder Woman Defending & Rough Beast.” The standout moment arrives around the 2:00-minute mark as a woman’s voice emerges in a cry. Even if you didn’t know the name of the song, you’d probably associate that cry with Wonder Woman because it tended to pop up whenever she was about to do something dramatic. TikTok user @tanners.tiktok first posted a video that includes the caption “Wonder Woman walking into frame in ZSJL” set to the cry from “Wonder Woman Defending & Rough Beast.” Since posting the video a few days ago, hundreds of new TikToks using the sound clip have emerged as people do ordinary things while the music plays, a nod to just how little it took Wonder Woman to do for the music to start playing.
