13.) AXIOS
Axios AM
🧤 Friday came fast. Today’s Smart Brevity™ count: 1,470 words … 5½ minutes.

President Biden talks — and promises to govern — like a soothing centrist. But early moves show he’s keeping his promise to advance a liberal agenda, Axios’ Dion Rabouin, Courtenay Brown and Jennifer A. Kingson report.
- Why it matters: Never before has a president done more by executive fiat in such a short period of time. These actions, coupled with a progressive slate of regulators and advisers, look more like the Biden of the Democratic primaries than the unity-and-restraint Biden of the general election.
Jaret Seiberg of Cowen Washington Research Group says that having it both ways “will work in the short-term, but eventually those progressives who are taking over key jobs will impact the regulatory environment.”
- “Changes will be more dramatic than what the market may be expecting based on Biden’s Cabinet picks and other top advisers.”
Biden handed some of his most visible positions, including treasury secretary, to “old-timers” like former Fed chair Janet Yellen, says Joseph Trevisani, senior analyst at FXStreet.
- “But the power positions, where vast changes can be effected with a rule or regulatory change, are going to the younger officials like Rohit Chopra,” Biden’s choice to run the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
- That, coupled with a Wall Street Journal report that Biden is set to name former Obama Treasury official Michael Barr as Comptroller of the Currency, regulator of big banks, looks like the continuation of a more progressive trend.
On immigration, a coalition of 200 U.S. mayors challenged the new administration to adopt a highly progressive agenda — only to find their announcement upstaged by Biden’s pledge to try to enact nearly all the reforms.
Between the lines: The party’s center has been shifting left for years, and Biden arguably just moved with it.
- A sign of the delicate dance to appease progressives: In response to Biden’s decision to extend the Trump-era student loan pause, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: “OK now let’s cancel them.”

President Biden will continue his executive action blitz today, issuing two more orders in an attempt to provide immediate relief to struggling families without waiting for Congress, Hans Nichols reports.
- Why it matters: In his second full day in office, Biden is again resorting to executive actions as he tries to increase payments for nutritional assistance and protect workers’ rights during the pandemic.
Today’s first executive order primarily focuses on directing the departments of Agriculture, Treasury and Veterans Affairs to consider administrative changes to how they calculate payments under various federal programs.
- One goal is to have the Department of Agriculture readjust the formula for families whose children are missing meals due to school closures — and increase their benefit by approximately 15%, which could mean another $100-per-month for families with three children.
- Biden is also asking the Department of Veterans Affairs to consider pausing federal collections on overpayments and debts, potentially helping some 2 million veterans.
The second executive order is designed to protect workers and increase wages and also revokes three Trump executive orders.
- The order directs the Labor Department to lay the groundwork to require federal contractors to pay a $15 minimum wage.
The bottom line: The operative word in these executive actions is “consider.” Biden is putting his own departments on notice that he expects them to interpret regulations broadly to help families.
- But Biden will need congressional action to get the trillions of dollars his economists say is required.

Apple’s moves on self-driving cars have come in fits and starts, but it has big ambitions and is pushing both its own efforts and potential partnerships with automakers, Axios chief tech correspondent Ina Fried writes from S.F.
- Why it matters: Apple has great businesses in phones and computers. But its long-term growth potential will depend on conquering an entirely new market. Improving health care and playing a role in autonomous vehicles appear to be its two biggest bets.
Hyundai, the Korean carmaker, made a rare (and probably unwise) public confirmation two weeks ago that it is in talks to work with Apple.
- Apple has sought and received permission from California regulators to test self-driving vehicle technology on city streets. It has a few dozen vehicles outfitted with lidar, radar and other sensors, some of which have been spotted on the streets of Silicon Valley.
- The size of the team has varied over time, but has been on the order of 1,000 workers, according to sources.
Between the lines: Apple wants to play a significant role in this space, but that doesn’t necessarily mean proprietary iCars will be rolling down the streets.
- The company has considered several possibilities, ranging from building software that others could use, to focusing less on cars and more on the broader area of “autonomy.”
- “The only thing we do actually know with certainty is that they have been developing and testing automated driving systems,” says Sam Abuelsamid, principal analyst at Guidehouse Insights.
Selling cars doesn’t produce the 35%+ profit margins Apple typically likes, while a service might.
- Apple could pick and choose where to offer the service, focusing on big cities that are well-suited to self-driving cars and have a large base of affluent customers. Think L.A., New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami and so on.
Between the lines: Apple usually likes to put a better interface on technology that’s emerging but not brand new, rather than being the absolute first to market.
- The iPod wasn’t the first digital music player, the iPhone wasn’t the first smartphone and the Apple Watch wasn’t the first smartwatch.
Apple has confirmed interest in the category, but declined to comment for this story.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, joining White House press secretary Jen Psaki during her briefing yesterday, on the contrast with Trump administration briefings: “[I]t was very clear that there were things that were said — be it regarding things like hydroxychloroquine and other things like that — that really was uncomfortable because they were not based on scientific fact.”
- “[Y]ou didn’t feel that you could actually say something and there wouldn’t be any repercussions about it,” Fauci continued.
- “The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know, what the evidence, what the science is, and know that’s it — let the science speak — it is somewhat of a liberating feeling.”
The White House released a 198-page COVID-19 strategy, available for download here.
- When MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell last night told White House chief of staff Ron Klain there’s still no one-stop way to get personal vaccination info, Klain replied, “There’s no question: It needs to be easier and more transparent for people to figure out how to get their shot and when to get their shot.”
After booming in 2020, stocks of clean-energy companies are poised to keep going up under President Biden’s policies, Axios’ Amy Harder writes.
Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios
America’s big banks capped off a winning year, led by soaring Wall Street-facing business lines, Axios’ Courtenay Brown reports.
- Why it matters: Banks cashed in on the white-hot IPO market, record debt issuance, and sky-high trading volume — all of which played out as economic peril softened the consumer side of their businesses.
How it happened: Financial results show that banks made a killing thanks to unprecedented action by the Federal Reserve — which caused a rush of activity in financial markets, pushed a slew of companies to issue debt, and led a flood of others to go public for the first time.

Many of former President Trump’s pardons, including Paul Manafort’s, “are narrowly drawn,” leaving recipients open to future prosecution, Andrew Weissmann, the former Mueller lead prosecutor, argues for NYU School of Law’s Reiss Center on Law and Security.
- Why it matters, according to Weissmann: “If the Biden administration’s Department of Justice wants to rectify some of Trump’s abuse of the pardon power, there are now options at its disposal.”
Between the lines: Trump’s zany process, which often cut out the Justice Department pardon machinery, could wind up backfiring on his allies.
- Keep reading. (hat tip: MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow)
President Biden’s swearing-in and inaugural address drew nearly 40 million viewers (not counting streaming), beating Trump’s 38.35 million viewers from 2017, according to preliminary Nielsen figures, Sara Fischer writes.
- Roughly 24.6 million tuned into the star-studded event in prime time hosted by Tom Hanks.
Why it matters: The figures, which don’t include data from households that may have streamed the event, show that despite all of the drama in Washington, the country was still eager to watch its new president be sworn in.
Bret Baier’s son Paul is recovering from his fourth open-heart surgery, and has “made leaps and bounds” since the 10-hour procedure last month, the Fox News anchor tells PEOPLE in the issue out today.
- Paul, born with five congenital heart defects, had his first procedure as a newborn — then two more at 10 months old and 6 years old.
- Paul said by Zoom: “Golf is my favorite sport. … [My doctor] says I have to wait six to eight weeks, which I’m very excited for, because we’re planning to go to Florida, and it’s perfect weather there.”
Baier said he and his wife, Amy, who also have a 10-year-old son, Daniel, recognize that every parent “has something” in terms of difficulties they face with their children — and Paul’s condition is their “something.”

AP Morning Wire – Jan 22 2021 View in Browser AP MORNING WIRE Good morning. In today’s AP Morning Wire:
TAMER FAKAHANY
The Rundown AP PHOTO/ALEX BRANDON Biden signs burst of virus orders, vows ‘help is on the way’; Coronavirus guidelines now the rule at White House; Dr. Fauci unleashed, takes ‘liberating’ turn at center stage
President Joe Biden has served notice that America’s war on COVID-19 is under new command, promising a fraught nation progress to reduce infections and lift the siege it has endured for nearly a year.
The United States has now suffered over 410,000 deaths, more than the U.S. losses in World War II.
Biden’s national strategy will ramp up vaccinations and testing, reopen schools and businesses and increase the use of masks. It also includes a requirement that Americans mask up for travel. A key goal is to administer 100 million coronavirus shots in 100 days.
He signed 10 virus-related executive orders with the nation deep in the deadliest wave of the pandemic and facing worrisome new mutations, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Zeke Miller report.
While Biden has vowed to take more aggressive measures than his predecessor to contain the virus, he faces steep obstacles, including uncertainty over whether congressional Republicans will help pass his $1.9 trillion coronavirus package.
“We didn’t get into this mess overnight, and it will take months to turn this around,” Biden said at the White House. But then, looking directly into the TV camera, Biden declared: “To a nation waiting for action, let me be clear on this point: Help is on the way.”
VIDEO: Biden unveils COVID strategy, says ‘help is on the way.’
The Economy: Biden plans to sign two executive orders today that would increase food aid, protect jobseekers on unemployment and clear a path for federal workers and contractors to get a $15 minimum wage. The actions are an effort to rush financial relief to millions of Americans hurt by the fallout from the pandemic, while Congress begins to consider and debate the stimulus package proposed by Biden. You can follow all developments on that later here.
White House: The clearest sign that there’s a new boss at the White House is the deference being paid to coronavirus public health guidelines. Testing wristbands are in. Mask-wearing is mandatory. Desks are socially distanced. While the Trump administration was known for ignoring public safety guidelines, the Biden team has made a point of adhering to the same strict guidelines they’re counseling Americans to follow to help stem the spread of the virus. It’s part of an overall effort by Biden to lead by example on the pandemic, an ethos that carries over from his campaign and transition. Alexandra Jaffe and Zeke Miller report.
Dr. Fauci: After surviving nearly a year of darts and undermining comments from Donald Trump, Dr. Anthony Fauci is back and unleashed. He now speaks with the authority of the White House again. The doctor called it “liberating” to be backed by a science-friendly administration that has embraced his recommendations to battle COVID-19. And Fauci made clear that he believes the new administration will not trade in the mixed messages that so often came from the Trump White House, where scientific fact was often obscured by the president’s political agenda, Jonathan Lemire reports.
Border Wall: Biden has ordered a “pause” on all border wall construction, one of 17 executive orders issued his first day in office. The move leaves billions of dollars in unfinished work under contract after his predecessor worked feverishly to successfully to build 450 miles. A Senate aide tells the AP that the government has spent $6.1 billion of $10.8 billion under contract. The full amount under contract would have extended Trump’s wall to 664 miles. The Biden administration will negotiate cancellation fees and and look into whether what’s left can be spent elsewhere, Elliot Spagat reports from San Diego.
Impeachment: Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell wants to postpone Trump’s impeachment trial until February to give the former president time to prepare and review his case. The idea could appeal to some Senate Democrats, who are eager to spend time confirming Biden’s Cabinet nominees. The House impeached Trump on a single charge of incitement of insurrection for the deadly attack on the Capitol. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the trial has to happen even though Trump has left office so that there is accountability, Mary Clare Jalonick and Lisa Mascaro report. KOREAN CENTRAL NEWS AGENCY/KOREA NEWS SERVICE VIA AP After Trump made-for-TV summits, then setbacks, Kim Jong Un now starts over with President Biden
They were jaw-dropping summits. Meetings between two men who had threatened to obliterate each other’s countries in thermonuclear infernos and descended into personal insults for good measure.
But while the meetings between Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong un were huge feasts on spectacle, they were thin gruel on substance. Nothing concrete emerged in terms of reducing Pyongyang’s nuclear program, nor Washington easing sanctions on North Korea.
Last year was a disaster for Kim, who helplessly watched his country’s economy decay amid pandemic border closures while brooding over the collapse of those made-for-TV summits with Trump that failed to lift punishing sanctions from his country, Kim Tong-hyung reports.
Now he must start over with President Biden, who has previously called him a thug and accused Trump of chasing spectacles instead of meaningful reductions of Kim’s nuclear arsenal.
The change of U.S. government could see North Korea revert to its old behavior. It has a history of testing new U.S. administrations with weapons demonstrations aimed at forcing the Americans back to negotiations.
Kim recently paraded new weapons he may test, including missiles designed for submarine launches. AP PHOTO/SETH WENIG Lucky few in US hit vaccine jackpot for rare extra doses; Brazil awaits shots from India amid supply concerns; Germany passes 50,000 virus dead
With millions of Americans waiting for their chance to get the coronavirus vaccine, a fortunate few are getting bumped to the front of the line as clinics scramble to get rid of extra, perishable doses at the end of the day.
Sometimes they just happen to be near a clinic at closing time. Sometimes clinic workers go out looking for recipients.
Other times the demand is so great clinics set up lotteries to give out extra shots. It has become one of the most unusual, and to some unseemly, quirks in the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccines, Bernard Condon, Candice Choi and Matt Sedensky report.
VIDEO: Fortunate few win coronavirus vaccine lottery.
In the meantime, public health experts are blaming vaccine shortages around the U.S. in part on the Trump administration’s push to get states to vastly expand their vaccination drives to reach the nation’s estimated 54 million people age 65 and over.
The push that began over a week ago has not been accompanied by enough doses to meet demand, leading to frustration and confusion. President Biden has vowed to turn things around.
Brazil Vaccine: The government is eagerly awaiting the arrival today of 2 million doses of vaccine from India. The shipment was announced as public health experts are sounding the alarm over insufficient supply in South America’s biggest nation. Neither the government’s Fiocruz Institute nor Sao Paulo state’s Butantan Institute have yet received the technology to produce vaccines domestically and instead must import the active ingredient. There are only about 10 million doses available at the moment, and Brazil’s government is estimated to need that many just to cover front-line health workers in the nation of 210 million people, Diane Jeantet and David Biller report.
Germany Deaths: The death toll has passed 50,000, a number that has risen swiftly over recent weeks even as infection figures are finally declining. Germany had a relative small number of deaths in the pandemic’s first phase and was able to lift many restrictions quickly. But it saw much higher levels of infections in the fall and winter. Hundreds of deaths have been reported daily over recent weeks, Geir Moulson reports from Berlin.
Tokyo Olympics: IOC President Thomas Bach and local organizers are pushing back against reports that the postponed Tokyo Olympics will be canceled entirely. Now set to open July 23, the Tokyo Games were postponed 10 months ago at the outbreak of the pandemic, and now the event appears threatened again. The local organizing committee did not address directly The Times of London story, but said the Olympics were going forward and had the support of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Stephen Wade reports.
PHOTOS: Postponed Tokyo Olympics to open in just 6 months.
Timeline: Wuhan’s 76-day lockdown, one year later.
Wuhan Documentary: China is rolling out a state-backed film praising Wuhan ahead of the anniversary of the 76-day lockdown in the central city where the coronavirus was first detected. The documentary, “Days and Nights in Wuhan,” features contributions from 30 filmmakers portraying the suffering and sacrifices made by the city’s 11 million residents, medical staff and front line workers, Emily Wang Fujiyama reports.
Climate Change
”We will be stronger to face the challenges of our time. Stronger to build our future. Stronger to protect our planet.” That was the delighted response from French President Emmanuel Macron, welcoming President Joe Biden’s decision to rejoin the the Paris climate accord.
World leaders have breathed an audible sigh of relief that the United States is rejoining the global effort to curb climate change, a cause that his predecessor had shunned, Frank Jordans reports from Berlin.
The treaty, forged in the French capital in 2015, commits countries to put forward plans for reducing their emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, which is released from burning fossil fuels.
Donald Trump had questioned the scientific warnings about man-made global warming, at times accusing other countries of using the Paris accord as a club to hurt the U.S. Other Top Stories Syria’s state media says Israeli warplanes have fired several missiles on targets in central Syria, killing a family of four – including two children. State-news agency SANA said today’s attack took place shortly before dawn, when Israeli warplanes flew over neighboring Lebanon. Israel has launched hundreds of strikes against Iran-linked military targets in Syria over the years but rarely acknowledges or discusses such operations. Israel views Iranian entrenchment on its northern frontier as a red line, and it has repeatedly struck Iran-linked facilities and weapons convoys destined for Lebanon’s militant Hezbollah group. The return of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny from Germany was marked by chaos and popular outrage, and it ended, almost predictably, with his arrest. Navalny had spent five months in Berlin recovering from a nerve agent poisoning. The Jan. 17 flight carried him and his wife, along with a group of journalists documenting the journey. But the plane was diverted from its original intended airport in Moscow to another one in the capital in what was seen as an apparent attempt to foil a welcome from crowds. Authorities took him into custody immediately. His followers called for nationwide demonstrations Saturday. He faces years in prison, but political commentators say there is no good option for the Kremlin. Speculation has gripped social media in Iran that Bitcoin is to blame for a series of recent power blackouts across the country. The government launched a major crackdown on Bitcoin processing centers, which use immense amounts of electricity and are a huge burden on the power grid. Cryptocurrency has surged in popularity in Iran after Donald Trump withdrew America in 2018 from Tehran’s nuclear accord and re-imposed sanctions. Anonymous transactions made in cryptocurrencies allow individuals and companies to bypass banking sanctions that have crippled Iran’s economy. Bitcoin miners say they’re being targeted unfairly and that frequent blackouts have deeper roots in government mismanagement. Amazon won’t be forced to immediately restore web service to Parler after a federal judge ruled against a plea to reinstate the fast-growing social media app favored by followers of Donald Trump. A U.S. District Judge in Seattle said she wasn’t dismissing Parler’s “substantive underlying claims” against Amazon but said it fell short in demonstrating the need for an injunction forcing it back online. Amazon kicked Parler off its web-hosting service last week, and in court filings said the suspension was a “last resort” to block it from harboring violent plans to disrupt the presidential transition. 25.) POLITICO PLAYBOOK
POLITICO Playbook: What Biden did on Day One vs. what he promised
DRIVING THE DAY
DAY ONE PROMISE TRACKER: We recently compiled a list of the many actions President JOE BIDEN pledged to take on Day One of his presidency. He followed through on most of them.
But there are a few big ones that were NOT included in the flurry of activity this week. (We were generous in our accounting and included Biden’s actual first day, Wednesday, and his first full day, Thursday.)
Here are the promises he didn’t keep and the reasons why:
X “On day one, I’ll move to: eliminate the Trump tax cut for the super-wealthy, cut the unjustified loopholes in our tax code, and use that money to invest in America’s future.” June 27, 2019
X “On Day One, if I’m president of the United States, you’re going to see the end of Trump’s tax cut for the top 10th of 1%.” (Said during an address to the Philadelphia AFL-CIO in September 2019, according to Bloomberg)
These two economic priorities were put forward before the pandemic and the subsequent recession that led Biden to overhaul his initial economic agenda.
X “My first day of office, I’m going to send a bill to the Congress repealing the liability protection for gun manufacturers, closing the background check loopholes and waiting period.” Feb. 20, 2020
This is the most conspicuous First Day pledge that Biden has abandoned, an apparent concession to the reality of slim Democratic margins in Congress and a shift in post-pandemic priorities.
X “I’d double that tax [on foreign profits] and do that on Day One.” July 9, 2020
This was probably a Biden ad lib.
X “On Biden’s first day in office, he will restore federal employees’ rights to organize and bargain collectively, and will direct his agencies to bargain with federal employee unions over non-mandatory subjects of bargaining.” The Biden plan for strengthening worker organizing, collective bargaining, and unions
Biden is scheduled to sign this one today. (A White House spokesman told us, “We’re thinking about ‘Day One promises’ not literally on Jan. 20, but across multiple days.”) Even without that caveat, Biden did indeed keep the overwhelming majority of Day One pledges that we could find from his speeches, press releases and interviews over the last two years.
WHAT DAY ONE DOESN’T MEAN: Biden has long promised to outline an immigration plan on Day One, and he followed through on that pledge. That might suggest that immigration is his top legislative priority. Not so fast. He’s made it clear that his Covid-19 relief and stimulus bill is first up.
And even after that, there’s still no consensus among Democrats about what comes next. During an interview Thursday, CEDRIC RICHMOND, senior adviser to the president, confirmed to us that just because an immigration proposal was sent to the Hill didn’t mean it was Biden’s biggest priority — congressional leaders will have to decide what to prioritize next.
“We’re not going to just enforce our will,” Richmond said. “They have to buy into it. … But I believe him sending it up so early is a statement of values and a statement of priority, and that’s the key to it.”
We hear from sources on both sides of the Capitol that any immigration plan would be much narrower than the sweeping 2013 plan. Think legislation to help Dreamers.
A HANDY RECAP — “The 17 things Joe Biden did on Day One,” by Alice Ollstein, Arjun Kakkar and Beatrice Jin
MCCONNELL PROPOSES MID-FEBRUARY IMPEACHMENT TRIAL: Senate Minority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL wants to wait several more weeks before starting former President DONALD TRUMP’S second impeachment trial, saying the ex-president’s new legal team needs time to prep his defense. McConnell ensured Trump was quickly acquitted last time, but has since broken with him and even privately held out the possibility of convicting the departed president. (Color us skeptical.) In a private call with his members Thursday, however, McConnell argued that House Democrats gave the president zero due process and it’s only fair to give him some time. CBS scoop
What it means: If Senate Majority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER agrees, we could be looking at a trial in mid-February — to the chagrin of Democrats who are eager to get to Biden’s agenda. But the delay could give Schumer more time to confirm Biden nominees.
GRAHAM HOOKS TRUMP UP WITH IMPEACHMENT LAWYER: We briefly caught up Thursday night with Trump ally Sen. LINDSEY GRAHAM (R-S.C.), who announced Thursday that Trump hired one of his longtime pals to be his impeachment lawyer. Graham served in the same National Guard unit BUTCH BOWERS, a South Carolina lawyer who served in George W. Bush’s Justice Department.
“The president asked if I know of any lawyers. He thinks South Carolina has good lawyers. He mentioned Trey Gowdy. I said, ‘Well, I got some names.’ Butch was one of the names I gave them.” And what about Gowdy, the former South Carolina congressman-turned-Fox News TV star? “I think he’s got obligations that won’t allow him to do it,” Graham said. Gowdy didn’t respond to a question about whether he declined to represent the ex-president. GABBY ORR and MERIDITH MCGRAW: “Trump starts taking his second impeachment seriously”
Bowers “is no stranger to impeachment proceedings,” according to the Post and Courier newspaper. Among other cases, he “worked for then-Gov. MARK SANFORD when lawmakers considered impeaching him after he left the state to see his mistress in Argentina in 2009.”
OVER IN THE HOUSE …
CHENEY STARES DOWN A MUTINY: House Republican Conference Chair LIZ CHENEY is having a rough week, to put it mildly. After joining nine other House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment, the No. 3 House Republican is facing a mutiny from more than 100 House Republicans who want her gone from leadership. Also: A primary challenger announced his bid and a local county Republican Party in her district voted to censure her.
As our Mel Zanona and Olivia Beavers report in this deep dive on the divide within the House GOP Conference, Trump ally ELISE STEFANIK (R-N.Y.) is making calls about running for Cheney’s position if the conference ousts her. And Cheney’s GOP critics are circulating a video of Democrats quoting her supporting impeachment.
Mel and Olivia are hearing from most of their GOP sources that Cheney will hold on; the bar for her removal is pretty high. Also, removing her might send the message that they’re more keen on taking out one of their own for holding Trump accountable than holding accountable the man who helped instigate the riot in the first place.
The upshot: Trump may be gone, but this is still his party — at least for now. Just listen to House Minority Leader KEVIN MCCARTHY after the riots vs. now. McCarthy on Jan. 13: “The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on congress by mob rioters.” McCarthy on Thursday: “I don’t believe he provoked, if you listened to what he said at the rally.”
— ALEX ISENSTADT: “Trump forces seek primary revenge on GOP impeachment backers: Candidates, donors and local party officials are already organizing against the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump.”

JAN. 6 FALLOUT — “Senate Democrats file ethics complaint against Republicans Hawley, Cruz over roles in Capitol riot,” NBC
REVERSAL — “‘We feel incredibly betrayed’: Thousands of Guardsmen forced to vacate Capitol,” by Lara Seligman, Natasha Bertrand and Andrew Desiderio: “Thousands of National Guardsmen were allowed back into the Capitol Thursday night, hours after U.S. Capitol Police officials ordered them to vacate the facilities, sending them outdoors or to nearby parking garages after two weeks pulling security duty after the deadly riot on Jan. 6.
“One unit, which had been resting in the Dirksen Senate Office building, was abruptly told to vacate the facility on Thursday, according to one Guardsman. The group was forced to rest in a nearby parking garage without internet reception, with just one electrical outlet, and one bathroom with two stalls for 5,000 troops, the person said. Temperatures in Washington were in the low 40s by nightfall.”
ABOUT THOSE METAL DETECTORS — “GOP Rep. Andy Harris Tries To Bring Gun Into House Chamber,” HuffPost: “Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), who has repeatedly flouted the magnetometers that were installed near the House chamber after the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, set off the metal detectors while trying to enter. When an officer with a metal detector wand scanned him, a firearm was detected on Harris’s side, concealed by his suit coat. …
“HuffPost watched Harris try to get another member to take the gun from him so he could go vote. The member, Rep. John Katko (R-N.Y.), told Harris he didn’t have ‘a license’ and refused to hold the weapon for him. HuffPost also heard Harris complain to some fellow members that he had asked his staff to remind him about the screenings and they hadn’t.”

— She described 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in a way we haven’t really heard before: “I walked into the White House today for the very first time, and it is tiny. It’s very narrow. I couldn’t believe it.”
— On the weight of taking office for Harris: “The history of this moment is not lost on her. She feels a great sense of responsibility, but she’s also very focused. … And she’s a full governing partner here in this effort.”
— On what the Trump White House left behind: “We are in an unprecedented time with four converging crises” — Covid-19, the recession, climate change and racial justice. “And we walked in to find that there was no plan, there was no playbook from our predecessors.” She promises they “didn’t wait to see what our predecessors have left for us,” and got ready during the transition.

The Morning Briefing: Impeach #NotMyPresident Joe Biden Also Plus #Resist
Behold Biden the Job Killer
Happy Friday, magnificent Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. Please take a complimentary babushka.
I hope everyone is staying hydrated, they’ll most likely be rationing water for us once we get to the gulag. I’d like to say I’m kidding but I am getting a real creeper vibe off of the new president. Also, Joe Biden sounds a little too much like Joe Stalin for my comfort.
Don’t even pretend that’s not going to rob you of some sleep.
Joe Biden’s handlers wasted no time setting their empty vessel Manchurian candidate on the path to the far left. The supposed moderate has put the United States back in the green insanity game in a big way and it all happened in less than twenty four hours.
I’m no United States Inauguration Day historian, but I can’t off the top of my head remember a new president taking over and thinking that killing jobs was a great way to kick things off and endear himself to his people. Honestly, I’m not sure that a mentally competent Joe Biden would have thought so either.
Puppet Joe has no convictions though. He’s at the mercy of his extremist handlers and they wanted him slashing jobs of American citizens in the name of the Church of Climate Change. They had him do it at a time when the American economy is reeling and jobs are scarce.
But hey, no more mean tweets from Orange Man Bad, right?
President Biden’s executive order halting the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline immediately put thousands of Americans out of work. You know what?
He and his administration don’t care.
Pete Buttigieg is Biden’s nominee to be the Secretary of Transportation and he had a rather cavalier response when Sen. Ted Cruz asked him about the executive order:
“I think the most important thing is to make sure that we make good on the promise of the president’s climate vision as being one that creates far more jobs, billions we hope,” Buttigieg responded.
“The answer is,” he continued, “we are very eager to see those workers continue to be employed with good-paying, union jobs. Even if they might be different ones.”
In other words, the peasants should be happy doing whatever we tell them to do.
It’s stunning that Mayor Pete can be so casually dismissive, throwing out a b.s. promise of future jobs to people who already had jobs but just lost them because the Democratic elite are gearing up to get their palms greased by Big Green.
Again though: no more mean tweets.
I really hope that all of the six hundred billion kajillion who voted for Grandpa Gropes can take comfort in not feeling attacked by Donald Trump while they’re out of work.
It’s never too early to talk about getting people this awful out of office. Tyler wrote yesterday about articles of impeachment against Biden being filed in the House:
A House Republican officially filed articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on his second day in office. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) — infamous for supporting the QAnon conspiracy theory on a blog before running for Congress — launched a Quixotic attempt to impeach Biden over the Hunter Biden-Burisma scandal.
“President Joe Biden is unfit to hold the office of the Presidency. His pattern of abuse of power as President Obama’s Vice President is lengthy and disturbing. President Biden has demonstrated that he will do whatever it takes to bail out his son, Hunter, and line his family’s pockets with cash from corrupt foreign energy companies,” Greene said in a statement on Thursday after filing the articles.
“President Biden is even on tape admitting to a quid pro quo with the Ukrainian government threatening to withhold $1,000,000,000 in foreign aid if they did not do his bidding. President Biden residing in the White House is a threat to national security and he must be immediately impeached,” the congresswoman insisted.
Greene’s impeachment effort is unlikely to gain any traction, but it does once again point out the notorious Burisma scandal.
Normally I’m not a fan of political grandstanding but I’m willing to make an exception in this case. It’s important to send the Democrats the message that the GOP isn’t ready to hop aboard the Good Ship Unity just yet.
It would be great if the Republicans were as unpleasant as possible for quite some time. We can’t depend on all of them, but this country can’t afford what will happen if this administration has its way with its disturbing far, far left agenda. There’s only so much the GOP can do from the minority, but it’s imperative that they at least appear to be fighting back.
Have a great weekend.

The Morning Dispatch: Vaccine Blame Game
Plus: Digging into President Biden’s opening executive actions on climate change.

Happy Friday! When we’re next in your inbox, February will be only one week away. 🤯
Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories
- At least 32 people are dead and dozens more injured after two suicide bombers blew up a market in Baghdad on Thursday morning. No group has yet taken credit for the attack—the first of its kind in Baghdad in several years—but Iraqi military officials are attributing it to the Islamic State.
- The House and Senate both approved a waiver on Thursday allowing former Army Gen. Lloyd Austin to serve as Defense Secretary, despite retiring from military service in 2016, less than the requisite seven years ago. Austin is expected to be confirmed to his post later today.
- Humanitarian groups who have finally been permitted access to parts of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, which was convulsed by civil war late last year when the federal government attacked the former local ruling party, say the conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis. “Every time we reach a new area, we find food, water, health services depleted, and a lot of fear among the population,” an official with Doctors Without Borders told Reuters. “Everybody is asking for food.” The region has been a black hole of information since the government shut down internet and phone access to the area in early November.
- The Biden administration is reportedly seeking a five-year extension of the New START nuclear arsenal treaty with Russia, which governs how many nuclear-armed submarines, bombers, and missiles each country can deploy. The treaty is set to expire on February 5.
- Former President Donald Trump has reportedly chosen South Carolina attorney Butch Bowers to represent him in his upcoming impeachment trial. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday proposed beginning the Senate impeachment trial in mid-February to give both Democrats and Trump time to prepare arguments.
- U.S. District Judge Barbara Rothstein on Thursday rejected a lawsuit from Parler, the laissez-faire social media platform, demanding that Amazon Web Services restore Parler’s cloud hosting ability. Amazon had revoked it in the wake of the Capitol siege earlier this month. “This was not a case about free speech. It was about a customer that consistently violated our terms of service,” an Amazon spokesperson said.
- The United States confirmed 185,315 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 9.9 percent of the 1,881,360 tests reported coming back positive. An additional 3,876 deaths were attributed to the virus on Thursday, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 409,877. According to the COVID Tracking Project, 119,927 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 37,960,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed nationwide, and 17,546,374 have been administered.
Team Biden’s Vaccine Blame Game
Are we well on our way to distributing and administering enough COVID-19 vaccine to get the pandemic under control, or is the federal effort to facilitate that distribution in shambles? The fledgling Biden administration staked out both positions at different points in the day Thursday.
It began with a CNN story, sourced to anonymous figures within the Biden transition team, that made a striking claim yesterday morning: The Trump administration, obsessed with overturning the results of the election to the exclusion of all else, let its vaccine distribution strategy fall into such sorry disrepair that Biden’s team was essentially starting from “square one.”
“There is nothing for us to rework,” one source said. “We are going to have to build everything from scratch.”
Then, on Thursday afternoon, a reporter asked President Biden whether his goal of administering 100 million vaccines in his first 100 days in office is ambitious enough. The new president bristled: “When I announced it, you all said it’s not possible. Come on, give me a break, man. It’s a good start.”
But here’s the rub: A pace of 1 million vaccines a day is only marginally higher than the pace reached during the first month of vaccine ramp-up during the Trump administration. According to a Bloomberg compilation of state vaccination data, the rate of inoculations—which has been gradually accelerating since late December—averaged 912,497 per day during the final week of the Trump administration.
There are two things going on here. The first is simple spin. Donald Trump’s strategic messaging typically consisted of wildly overpromising and then changing the subject; Team Biden is performing the more classic Washington maneuver of lowering expectations by aiming for a conservative target while bemoaning how poor of shape the last guy left things in.
As spin goes, it wasn’t very artfully done—particularly after Dr. Anthony Fauci, whom Biden has tapped as his chief medical adviser, disputed the characterization during an afternoon briefing. “We’re certainly not starting from scratch, because there is activity going on in the distribution,” Fauci said. “With the previous administration, you can’t say it was absolutely not usable at all. … So we are continuing, but you’re going to see a real ramping up of it.” By that point, however, the initial story had already rocketed around social media and been mentioned dozens of times on cable air.
Biden’s Moves on Climate
Throughout both the Democratic primary and the general elections, Joe Biden pitched combating climate change as one of the key pillars of his policy agenda. It makes sense, then, that environmental action was heavily featured in the flurry of executive orders and memorandums the president signed on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after taking the oath of office.
One order both revoked the permit President Trump granted for the construction and operation of the Keystone XL gas pipeline across the U.S.-Canada border and temporarily halted natural gas leasing in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge while the Secretary of the Interior “conduct[s] a new, comprehensive analysis of the potential environmental impacts of the oil and gas program.” Biden also recommitted the United States to the Paris Climate Agreement, which President Trump announced the country would leave back in 2017.
“We’re going to combat climate change in a way we have not before,” Biden said Wednesday. But he added that what he was signing were “just executive actions. They are important, but we’re going to need legislation for a lot of the things we’re going to do.”
As long as the filibuster remains intact in the Senate, requiring a 60-vote threshold for passage of most bills, Biden will need more than a handful of Senate Republicans to pass much of that legislation—and yesterday was an ominous sign for those expecting bipartisan movement. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday lambasted the Paris Climate Agreement—which President Barack Obama first entered the United States into back in 2015—as a “terrible bargain.”
Reentering the agreement “would set us up to self-inflict major economic pain on working American families with no assurance that China or Russia would honor their commitments,” McConnell said. “In fact, the U.S. has already been reducing carbon emissions while China and other nations in the agreement have kept increasing theirs. Rejoining will just set us up to kill American jobs while our competitors continue to roar on by.”
Worth Your Time
- Edelman’s annual trust barometer found that Americans’ trust in traditional news media is at an all-time low, with nearly six in 10 respondents believing “Journalists and reporters are purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations.” This is a deep-seated problem with numerous, complex roots—but commentary on President Biden’s inauguration by various cable news hosts this week certainly didn’t help. “CNN glowed almost as brightly about the event as a state media would have,” Politico media critic Jack Shafer wrote. “It accentuated all of Biden’s leading attributes—his modesty; the length of his Capitol experience, where he outlasted some of the building’s marble columns; his Catholic faith; his bounce-back from personal tragedies; his love of country; and so on.” This has real-world consequences, Shafer continues. “In an era when large portions of Americans think mainstream media is a tool of the left, a tad less bootlicking could help build trust among media skeptics.”
- This Arthur Brooks column on personal happiness hit a little close to home for some of your more Type-A Morning Dispatchers. “Every cultural message we get is that happiness can be read off a scorecard of money, education, experiences, relationships, and prestige,” he writes. “Want the happiest life? Check the boxes of success and adventure, and do it as early as possible! Then move on to the next set of boxes. She who dies with the most checked boxes wins, right?” Wrong, Brooks argues. “Relying on external rewards lowers satisfaction. You will like your job less if your primary motivation is prestige or money. You will appreciate your relationships less if you choose your friends and partners based on their social standing. You will relish your vacation less if you choose the destination for how it will look on social media.”

Toeing the Company Line
- On the latest episode of Advisory Opinions, Sarah and David talk about how the past four years have shaped how they think about and engage with politics. “I have substantively changed since 2012 to 2014,” Sarah said. “And the change has been for the good. … How many people have stepped back over the last four years or last 24 hours, and said ‘You know what? I’m going to keep [criticism of political opponents] really substantive from now on … instead of assuming bad faith?” The two then dive into the status of the NRA’s bankruptcy case, and take a closer look at President Biden’s flurry of Day One executive orders—and whether they’ll stand up to any legal challenges.
- Democratic strategist and friend of The Dispatch Mo Elleithee made his return to The Remnant yesterday, talking with Jonah about the early days of the Biden administration and the coming political realignment. Would Democrats relish the thought of a “Patriot Party” rising up in opposition to the GOP, or would they reel in horror? Are Americans cautiously optimistic about the incoming administration’s “unity” message, and if so, are they right to be?
- In this morning’s edition of Uphill, Haley takes a look at the effort to push House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney out of her leadership role after she sided against former President Donald Trump in the wake of the attack on the Capitol. “When Rep. Liz Cheney voted to impeach President Donald Trump last week, some suggested her decision was aimed at political gain,” Haley writes. “But that idea presupposes the existence of a future, Trump-free Republican Party in which Cheney’s impeachment vote will enhance her standing among primary voters and her colleagues, which is … questionable. Cheney’s move, at least for now, is anything but beneficial to her position in the GOP.”

Donald Trump Jr. exposes the real reason Biden is blocking Keystone XL
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 03:02 AM PST Even before Joe Biden was inaugurated as president, he and his team were calling for an end to the Keystone Pipeline. The fourth leg of the energy project, Keystone XL, has been delayed, then resumed, and now delayed again by three presidents since 2015. It attracted opposition from environmentalists, becoming a symbol of the battle over climate change and fossil fuels. At least that’s the story we’ve been hearing from mainstream media, environmental groups, and the Biden administration. But Donald Trump Jr. has a different, more lucid take on what’s been happening.
Billionaire Warren Buffett and other major donors to Democratic candidates clearly benefit from an end to Keystone XL. Their methods of transportation, from rail lines to semi-trucks, benefit from the diminished effectiveness of the pipeline. The oil will still come, but now it will have to be transported less efficiently and at higher cost to consumers. But does it benefit the environment? No. Many of the original complaints against Keystone XL have been debunked. Moreover, the change in transportation style does more to harm the environment than the pipeline itself. Conservationists have a claim, but climate change environmentalists have backed away from their complaints because as long as demand for the oil remains high, it’s going to continue to flow in ways that are less carbon-friendly than the pipeline. It really does come down to the money and the Democratic donors. We’re barely two days into a Biden administration and the skirts are already being lifted on the hypocritical policies. Blocking Keystone XL has nothing to do with the environment and everything to do with leftist megadonors. The rank hypocrisy of NeverTrump
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:34 AM PST Hypocrisy has a skewed understanding in modern context. The term has been boiled down to the phrase “do as I say, not as I do.” However, this definition dilutes the most important ingredient of what makes someone a hypocrite. Admitted moral failings do not make one a hypocrite. Fraud does. In ancient Greece, hypocrites were theatre actors. They were playing a role. Their job was to convince their audience that they are a role different than themselves. We have seen an abundant examples of lockdown petty tyrants defying their own orders. What is clear about the Democrat Party is that they do not believe that COVID is a threat. They know masks do not work, that mitigation strategies were unnecessary and ineffective. But they had a role to play. And thus, when they were not in character, they flagrantly violated the rules they imposed on others. They are hypocrites not because they failed to live by their own standards, but because they never believed them in the first place. The NeverTrump movement is no different. And I refer not to the 2016 movement where even I opposed Trump because I believed he was a RINO. I refer instead to the movement that rode under that banner beyond 2016 and through 2020. There are three prominent examples that I speak of in this article. Beginning with the Lincoln Project we will see the most egregious examples. The founder of the Lincoln Project, John Weaver recently admitted to being a low level homosexual political version of Harvey Weinstein. He also used this scandal to bill himself as a victim for being a homosexual. Prior to this scandal it was revealed that John Weaver was the Russian asset the Lincoln Project oft accused Trump of being. The Lincoln Project billed itself as a group of morally uncompromised Republicans that wanted to return the GOP to the days of Mitt Romney and John McCain. But it turns out, one of their major players is a homosexual adulterer, a sin which to them pales in comparison to mean tweets. For the Lincoln Project, the problem was never Trump’s character, it was always about money and opposing right-of-center policy. David French is where we see a more Christianized example of a NeverTrumper than the overtly left-of-center McCain/Kasich staffer that was Weaver. David French consistently articulates that Christians who support Trump are compromising the gospel to “Christian Nationalism.” But David French already is vocal in his support of those who seek to undermine the gospel. Just in 2021, David French has promoted the words of numerous woke Evangelicals, including but not limited to: Beth Moore, Russell Moore, Phil Vischer, Jemar Tisby, and Anthony Bradley. He made a point early on in 2020 to endorse a woke podcast. It is not hard to conclude that someone who makes a habit out of promoting false teachers is projecting his own compromised Christianity onto others. David French is a hypocrite, and that’s why you get arguments out of him like “drag queen story hour is the price of freedom.” The last example to talk about is Erick Erickson. Like French, Erickson brands himself a Christian whilst opposing Trump. The arguments are near the same as French’s, but Erickson is less compromised. However, he is an adamant supporter of Russell Moore and a white knight for Beth Moore as well. Erick Erickson is a theological jellyfish. And that is the issue with the prominent NeverTrump members. They claim that their theological conservatism is their moral guidance for opposing Trump, as French and Erickson do, but actively support Woke Evangelicals subverting the gospel in the church. The resistance is dead. Long live the resistance.
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:30 AM PST It has always been cool to be a rebel – to be a part of “The Resistance,” the outsider thumbing his or her nose at the man. That probably accounts for the success of revolutionary movements throughout the ages; they harness the rebellious spirit of the youth. So, what’s a hot-headed young Che Guevara-wannabe to do when the allegedly fascist regime against which he raged and struggled is succeeded by a new set of rulers who are supposedly the antidote to everything that was wrong with those they replaced? Article by Graham J. Noble originally published at Liberty Nation. The journey from smashing the system to uncritical compliance is a humiliating one for those who formally considered themselves dark and dangerous outcasts whose mission it was to bring down their oppressors. That, however, is now where the likes of Antifa and Black Lives Matter find themselves. Those cocky young marauders are now standing silently by while the new political bosses claim that all criticism of the almighty state is seditious. Where is that rebellious spirit now? Was it always nothing more than a facade? They are in illustrious company: Most employees of the establishment media and almost everyone in Hollywood and Big Tech face the embarrassment of having to completely reverse course. Where before they were supposedly speaking truth to power and courageously pointing out everything that was wrong with America and its federal government, they now must embrace every word and deed that comes out of the new administration and masters of Congress. Tough Choice For The Former RebelsWhat other choice do they have? Like Barack Obama, Joe Biden has promised – no, more than promised; he has stated his certain intent – to right all the wrongs of the previous administration. As Obama discovered, the nation’s chief executive officer cannot merely blame everything upon his predecessor. Once you have pledged to right the ship, you cannot complain about the previous captain’s poor navigation skills when the vessel continues on the same course as before. In fairness, every new president should get eight or ten months’ grace – six months if his or her own party controls both chambers of Congress. After that, though, whatever problems the previous president caused should have been fixed. If they haven’t been, then perhaps the new president has already failed. What, then, can former members of The Resistance do to avoid looking ridiculous? Will they continue to march and riot? Will they still claim that America is an awful, oppressive country run by fascists? If they do, they will concede – with the entire nation as witnesses – that the man who now occupies the White House is no better than the one he replaced. Will they fall silent? Will there be no more demonstrations and calls for radical change? Will they claim that everything against which they railed has now been made right? That would be a stretch, to suddenly claim that more than two hundred years of systemic racism, repression of women’s rights, victimization of gays, and various other heinous sins have all been abruptly erased. That doesn’t give Biden a pass, though. Donald Trump did not campaign on pledges to fix everything that was supposedly wrong with American society. He vowed to fix the economy, enforce immigration laws, bring about energy independence, and disengage the U.S. from pointless foreign entanglements. Trump did all those things – and he did them faster than anyone thought possible. Like the man he served as vice president, Biden promised to heal America’s social and racial wounds, though. If he does not, then he will have failed – just as Obama failed. It doesn’t wash to make the excuse that such old scars cannot be healed that quickly. Obama pledged to erase those scars, and he did not. Biden has made the mistake of pledging the same, and he too will likely fail. The Real ResistanceWhat of Trump’s supporters, then? They never did face the same dilemma as left-wing activists. Trump voters embraced an anti-establishment candidate. They stuck with him as he became a despised, anti-establishment president. They were always the true Resistance, while BLM, Antifa, and other extremists on the left really wanted the restoration of the administrative state. Now they have it, and they must toe the line and become good little subjects or resist once again, thereby admitting that Biden’s ascent to the White House was an exercise in futility. Trump’s America, though, is now once again on the outside. It is now – finally – cool to be a conservative, for conservatives have been portrayed by the new regime as enemies of the state. Even the Republican Party has largely shunned them, which was tantamount to political suicide. The Resistance is dead. Long live The Resistance! ~ Read more from Graham J. Noble. Pro-Fraud Christians are using Christian Nationalism as a slur
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:16 AM PST Many of the Evangelical Elite, most of which would refer to themselves as “Conservative,” are throwing slanderous accusations towards Donald Trump and his supporters, including claims of “white supremacy” and “Christian Nationalism.” What is actually going on here and why is this happening within Evangelicalism? Alan Atchison of Capstone Report joins Bobby Lopez in this episode of The Big Brown Gadfly to discuss these wild accusations. Evangelical leaders, such as Beth Moore, Tim Keller, David Platt, Mark Dever and many others have gone full on “Never Trump”, going so far as to justify voting for the pro-abortion and pro-sin Joe Biden and the Democrats. They have contracted TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome) and are so triggered that they can’t even be intellectually honest. In their mind and in their claims, they believe that the only reason why Conservatives could vote for such a horrific man as Donald Trump would be because of white supremacy and this claim of Christian Nationalism. When push comes to shove, however, why is Christian Nationalism wrong? Think about it… Globalism is unbiblical. The Bible is clear when it comes to national borders and national sovereignty. Even on a spiritual level, Heaven has a border, and God sets the standard for entry. The only way in is either perfection or taking on Christ’s perfection by placing your faith in Him, repenting of your sins and following after Him. So when it comes to this claim of Christian Nationalism, the motivation for this accusation is that the accusers have a Globalist mindset. There’s definitely some serious problems within our mainstream Christian leadership. The fact that our supposed Conservative leaders hate Trump so much shows just how spiritually blind our pastors truly are. They can’t even see that our nation is in a battle between Good and Evil. Unfortunately, they are finding themselves on the wrong side of the battlefield.

The fascists of Antifa attacking Democrat offices proves once again the Nazis were leftists
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 01:58 AM PST Please note that turnabout is fair play and that our comrades of the left have purposefully decided to tar conservators of liberty with smear words: “domestic supremacist racial extremist terror radical”. Whenever possible, we will apply the same words to them and all at once for good measure. One of the fascist left’s favorite deflections in denying the obvious fact that a socialist workers’ party was a socialist workers’ party is the old rivalry talking point. The false narrative is that since the collectivists of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Partei were in conflict with other collectivists, they somehow weren’t collectivists. Somehow, this makes sense to leftists, but then again they also think that their socialist national agenda can somehow work even though it has never worked in 400 years.
Anyone with a logical mind should realize this is an absurd argument since ideology and rivalry or group competition are two entirely different dynamics. There are many cases of collectivists being in conflict as well as in the case of religious zealots. But somehow many of the “domestic supremacist racial extremist terror radical” left miss the point and cite this cute little talking point as some sort of ‘mike drop’ moment in an argument over the national socialist left’s attempts at rewriting history. But clearly, we have another case of those of the socialist left attacking others of the socialist left, obliterating the left nonsensical talking point once and for all. Will they label this an insurrection? We would also like to point out that the national socialist media and the domestic supremacist racial extremist terror radical left (but that is being repetitive and redundant). Was quick to label the Jan 6 mostly peaceful protest as an ‘insurrection’ so we are curious if the same label will be applied in this case? This involved an attack on a Federal courthouse, raising the obvious question as to whether this will be deemed a ‘Threat To Our Democracy’. Will they label the extreme racial supremacist radical leftists as domestic terrorists? This of course became (and still is of this writing) the cause celebre of the fascist left in applying their digital detective skills in tracking down the misdeeds of … mostly peaceful protesters. But will they apply the same skills in tracking down the misdeeds of these insurrectionists from the left? Will the media breathlessly report on the story for weeks on end or not at all? Or will they do as they did last summer and look the other way or report arson and looting as fiery, but peaceful protests? YouTube deletes portion of ‘dislikes’ from Biden videos, says it’s spam
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST YouTube deleted what appears to be thousands of “dislikes” from videos on the official channel of President Joe Biden’s White House. The company said it’s a part of its regular efforts to remove engagement it considers inauthentic. Article by Petr Svab originally published at The Epoch Times. People on the platform noticed that dislikes have been disappearing by the thousands from several White House videos and started posting before-and-after screenshots on social media shortly after the incoming administration took over the channel and published its first videos. The screenshots indicate a total of at least 16,000 dislikes were removed from at least three videos. Even after the adjustments, the five videos on the channel had about 14,000 likes combined versus nearly 60,000 dislikes as of 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 21. In response to a screenshot of one of the videos, YouTube told The Epoch Times that it’s monitoring engagement on the site to detect and remove activity it considers spam so that only engagement it considers organic remains. The mechanism worked as intended in the case of the Biden video, the company stated. “YouTube regularly removes any spam likes or dislikes from your videos,” the company stated in a 2019 tweet. “It may take up to 48 hours for the numbers to be updated.” It isn’t clear how YouTube discerns between authentic and inauthentic engagement; the company didn’t immediately respond to a request for further details. YouTube and its owner, Google, have long faced accusations of political bias. The companies have said their products are developed and run as politically neutral, but employee accounts and leaked internal materials indicate the companies are indeed infusing their politics into their products. Google shifted millions of votes in the Nov. 3, 2020, presidential election by pushing its political agenda onto its users, according to research psychologist Robert Epstein, who assembled a team of more than 700 voters to monitor what results they were receiving from channels such as search results, reminders, search suggestions, and newsfeeds ahead of the election. In the aftermath of the election, YouTube banned content that said the election was stolen through fraud, an allegation raised by former President Donald Trump and many others. The allegation hasn’t been proven in court, although it is supported by a significant body of evidence, including hundreds of sworn affidavits and analyses of statistical anomalies. Google and YouTube are the world’s two most popular websites, according to Alexa ranking. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have raised concerns over the massive power held by Google and several other tech giants. When I was a child, I spoke as a child. But now I’m disallowed.
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:02 PM PST You would have to live on Mars to not be aware of the hoopla about censoring that is conducted by what is referred to as “Big Tech.” But it seems the consensus is that BT can do as they wish since, “they say,” only the government is disallowed from preventing free speech. Too, many so-called conservatives seem to timidly submit to this concept. The truth is, Big Tech is comprised of private companies and therefore is exempt from being censored “they repeat.” Rubbish. Private companies went out, insofar as being free and not being under dominant government control in 1865. But no point in boring readers with the details. There are volumes already written on the subject that go unheeded (particularly by so-called conservatives). Nobel Laureate James Buchanan once commented on the lack of economic freedom without a sovereign state’s God-given right to secession. But no matter. Life goes on with a national government absent a federal one. For now, we are forced into our Orwellian masters’ life control, which includes our speech, and God-given right to use it. Big Tech has as much use for God as Big Government does. Big Tech is controlled by the government the same way government controls anything it wants. Either by legislative fiat, judicial fiat, or executive fiat—the constitution be damned. So-called checks and balances DO NOT exist. Remember, you can’t leave the state. The state says so! If the government wants to alter something like Rule 230 then it can. It can, as Ayn Rand famously pointed out, because it has the power of the gun. It seems Mao had the same theory. But then, many in our government know more about China and its CCP masters than they do about the world’s most famous libertarian. If you don’t think the state runs Big Tech, find out. Buy a share of some public company, say Exxon-Mobile, as an example. Now, if you wish you may attend the stockholders meeting. At that meeting a question you might ask (yes, you may ask a question): “Can you give me a list of the U.S. government regulations Exxon-Mobile must follow?” Not laws that the general public must follow, but special regulations that apply to the oil or energy industry. A probable answer would be something like: “Certainly, but we’ll have to mail them by a caravan of trucks because if we tried to download them the world-wide-web would explode!” There is not a business (public or private) that isn’t within the reach of government power. The truth is that through our “free” society we have “reconstructed” a socialist government. The wonderful world of what is referred to as “the left” has so legislated and thereby infused the government into our businesses and lives that a rebuff by these Big Tech monsters is a rebuff by the government. The FTC, IRS, EPA, SEC a “department of commerce,” a national bank (Federal Reserve) that prints its own money that business must use for transactions are only a partial dump of bureaus that “We the People” have allowed to rule us. Rule 230 alone stands as a government partnership with BT through some law passed, and enforced by some government bureau. A rule that tells an industry that it is exempt from civil legal remedies? Now, the government tells “We the People” of those special groups who may be made whole by the law, and those who may not—civil court in this case. Good grief, big business, and one of its tentacles, BT, gave up any protection from civil action when it took on a mantle of protection from the government. The destruction of journalism and opinion is almost dead. Those apostles of claptrap and nonsensical blather on the cable news outlets, and network news are living proof; a bunch of pedestrian, prosaic, popinjays with as much academic merit as a B grade Hollywood actor. Reporters? Writers? Good grief. These slanderous, dwarfed scribblers of “reporting” are allowed carte blanche in their screeds by BT. But those who actually write from intelligent thought, regardless of political measure, left or right, are “fact checked” into censorship oblivion. Now Big Tech has begun “canceling” everyone from the president of the United States to any outlet it believes in not “factual,” graded by their personal “unbiased” fact-checkers. The fact is that the government will do the will of those who are affixed within its dark bowels of control. And the sadder fact is, the recent presidential election was certainly rigged. For those fake-journalists who say such is not true: Liars you are. But you knew, and know that. Where is Patrick Henry when we need him? He finally did get death. But he got it after he got his preferred liberty. Today’s generation is going to get Big Tech, big government, and the shaft long before they get death. Ahh, what the hell, Washington: Tread on Us!

Vaccine skeptics now being labeled part of ‘extremist’ groups in latest merger of Big Pharma and the police state government
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:01 PM PST The rise (and success) of President Donald Trump and the threat his tens of millions of supporters pose to the existing establishment order (the deep state) is so immense there is a movement afoot by the powers that be to eliminate them before they grow strong and organized enough to take America back. One of the ways this effort is taking shape is to simply designate Trump’s supporters, among them Americans who remain skeptical of vaccines, as “extremist” groups, enemies of the state and terrorists. As Big Pharma — bolstered by the former president’s COVID-19 vaccine push — grows in wealth and power, the industry is emulating Corporate America and Big Tech by growing closer to the leviathan federal government. As noted by Technocracy News, last month The Hill claimed the “anti-vaccination movement sees COVID-19 as an opportunity” to shore up its opposition, adding: As public health officials seek to reassure Americans on the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine, anti-vaccine efforts could prevent the country from reaching herd immunity.” Meanwhile, a separate report in The Times said the British “government regards tackling false information about COVID-19 vaccination as a rising priority,” likely for the very same concern. And yet, how do ‘democracies’ justify utilizing cyber warfare against citizens just to implement public health policies that not all may agree with (and certainly policies that ‘the science’ doesn’t always prove)? Aren’t concerns over the safety of vaccines legitimate? Should they not be part of the policy debate and discussion? Since when is it okay to impose uncertain healthy policies on supposedly free people the same way a dictatorial leader would? (Related: After abandoning objective science and endorsing left-wing political agendas, how is the Lancet still considered a medical journal?) Not if the objective, the real objective, is control over the population; when control is the overriding goal, then discussion is an impediment. And along those lines, ‘opponents’ to government policy — in this case, when governments have decided that ‘vaccines are good’ and ‘dissent to vaccines is bad,’ the powers that be then must not simply disagree with their opponents, they have to demonize, dehumanize and de-legitimize them, even if it means putting their lives in danger with false accusations of “extremism.” Consider, per Technocracy News: In July 2020, Imran Ahmed, a member of the Steering Committee on Countering Extremism Pilot Task Force under the British government’s Commission for Countering Extremism and the chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), told The Independent he considers anti-vaxxers “an extremist group that pose a national security risk,” because “once someone has been exposed to one type of conspiracy it’s easy to lead them down a path where they embrace more radical world views that can lead to violent extremism.” Who thinks like this? Authoritarians do. Dictators. Tyrants. There is absolutely nothing to link concern over vaccines to violent extremism. Nothing. But the same kind of tyranny is brewing in the ‘land of the free’ — across the pond in America. Before President Trump even boarded Air Force One out of D.C., Democrats and their sick, twisted media lapdogs began fantasizing about “deprogramming” his 74 million-plus supporters by sending them all to ‘reeducation camps’ so they can indoctrinate them back into the Biden/Democrat/Deep State fold. Some of them have actually said as much out loud, including Marxist-Anarchist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Post reported: Ocasio-Cortez said the House subcommittee on civil rights she serves on has held hearings over the prior two years on white supremacy and said there are programs to “de-radicalize” brain-washed adherents. But she said funding was not a priority for those programs during the Trump years. “There are people who are radicalized right now. It’s going to take a very long time to de-radicalize these people and a lot of effort,” she said. Just a few years ago, she would have been run out of Congress for saying things like that. Now, post-Trump, she not only gets away with it, she is celebrated for it and her thoughts are echoed across other platforms — including so-called “news” networks like CNN, whose ‘media watchdog’ doesn’t even push back on calls to censor competitors.

Open borders globalists gush as Biden moves to change ‘alien’ to ‘noncitizen’
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 05:08 PM PST It will come as a shock to nobody that President Biden has already started changing the language in Washington DC. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been doing it for a while, so seeing the new administration move towards “wokespeak” on its first full day in control was expected. Nevertheless, it’s still an annoyance that cannot be dismissed. It’s symbolic, as CNN noted in their coverage, but the symbolism they’re seeing belies the real symbolism of the move: It’s just one small part of the sweeping immigration overhaul President Biden is pushing. But the symbolic significance is huge. Biden’s proposed bill, if passed, would remove the word “alien” from US immigration laws, replacing it with the term “noncitizen.” It’s a deliberate step intended to recognize America as “a nation of immigrants,” according to a summary of the bill released by the new administration. The term “illegal alien,” long decried as a dehumanizing slur by immigrant rights advocates, became even more of a lightning rod during the Trump era — with some top federal officials encouraging its use and several states and local governments taking up measures to ban it. “The language change on the first day of this administration, with Kamala Harris the daughter of immigrants, to me it’s not just symbolic…it’s foundational,” says Jose Antonio Vargas, an undocumented immigrant whose organization, Define American, pushes for more accurate portrayals of immigrants. “Foundational.” That is more of a reality than Vargas or others likely realize. “Alien” is the proper, legal, common sense term that should be used. Concern over hurt feelings over the “dehumanizing slur” takes away from the reality that illegal immigration itself is dehumanizing to both American citizens and legal immigrants. But the dehumanization that comes as a direct result of illegal immigration isn’t just about hurt feelings. It causes true economic distress on those who are here legally by prioritizing those who have stolen a piece of the nation’s sovereignty. What’s worse is that this begins the natural transition that can occur if not stopped. “Non-citizens” is a pathway to terms that have been floated like “future-citizens” or “inbound-citizens.” These terms are meant to push forward the open borders globalist agenda. By normalizing the phrasing in accepting terms, the Biden administration is engaging in the type of Cultural Marxism that many on the right have been warning about for decades. The word “alien” is defined as “a foreigner, especially one who is not a naturalized citizen of the country where they are living.” Changes by the Biden administration are intended to lay a foundation of “wokespeak.” Welcome to 1984. The “Domestic War” On Terrorism Is To Shut Down Dissent
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 12:29 AM PST
by Mike Huckabee: The brainless January 6 attack on the Capitol was a gift to the left, giving the incoming administration an excuse to treat all Trump supporters, going forward, as domestic terrorists. So it should come as no surprise that President Joseph Robinette Biden, in his inaugural address on Wednesday, declared war on domestic terror. Will definitions be twisted to enable this war to be waged against all those who supported Trump? Will 75 million Americans now be opposed in the same ways we opposed al-Qaeda after 9/11? And what does that do for “unity”? Former CIA Director and world-class dangerous person John Brennan gave his impression of this “war” on MSNBC, where he now works: “…The members of the Biden team who have been nominated or have been appointed are now moving in laser-like fashion to try to uncover as much as they can about what looks very similar to insurgency movements that we’ve seen overseas, where they germinate in different parts of the country, and they gain strength, and it brings together an ‘unholy alliance,’ frequently, of religious extremists, authoritarians, fascists, bigots, racists, nativists, even libertarians. And unfortunately, I think there has been this momentum that has been generated as a result of, unfortunately, the demagogic rhetoric of people that have just departed government, but also those who continue in the halls of Congress.” Let’s break that down. Brennan says the Biden team is now moving in “laser-like fashion” to uncover what “looks very similar” to overseas “insurgency” movements. “Laser-like”: A laser is quick and focused. In other words, no time for judicial review and due process. “Looks very similar”: It doesn’t have to BE an insurgency, just give the appearance of one to the people in charge. “Insurgency”: This loose term may be applied at will. A peaceful protest held to question, say, the outcome of the election would be labeled by many –- including social media, which has the power to censor –- as an insurgency that must be held in check because it might “incite violence.” “Unholy alliance”: This means groups that might not agree with each other on most things but happen to be on the same side about a particular issue. If no differentiation is made, an innocent group might be considered guilty by association. They wouldn’t even have to associate to be lumped together. “Religious extremists”: Who are the extremists? Depending on who’s talking, socially-conservative Baptists and Catholics might be considered extremist, while far-left Muslims and militant atheists might not be, simply because their politics are approved by those in charge. Never mind the First Amendment; it’s the politics that will decide how various faiths are treated. “Authoritarians”: Again, who are the real authoritarians? It seems to me we have people in control now who relish their new power and the idea of running everything way, way too much, and I’m talking about you, Nancy Pelosi and AOC. Among numerous others. “Fascists”: At least here in America, this word applies most truthfully to those who claim to be “anti-fascist.” But who gets to decide where to slap that “fascist” label? And what if they’ve already dictated that Trump supporters will be the ones labeled fascists, even though the real fascists are the ones burning down buildings and trashing their enemies’ civil rights? “Bigots/racists”: In the switched-around world of 2021, either of these terms can be used to refer to people who criticize the “anti-racist” movement, even to condemn those of us who think it’s best to be color-blind. If I’m the one talking, the “anti-racist” movement, so-called Critical Race Theory, is the most racist thing to come along since Jim Crow laws. But I’m not the one talking –- not in the halls of government, anyway. And not in public education and universities. Also, it doesn’t help that anyone who supported Trump is automatically labeled a racist. “Nativists”: This word can be used to describe anyone who just wants to put America first. And –- aha –- all the people who wanted to build a wall and “Make America Great Again.” Anti-immigrant! Bad people! “Libertarians”: These are people who want as limited a government as realistically possible and all the protections that the Constitution was intended to provide. To the current government, these might be the most dangerous people of all, especially when teamed with fed-up Republicans who lean that way. If they can be lumped in with extremists, fascists, and bigots, so much the better. I”ll translate the rest of what he said: These groups gained “momentum” from Trump-style rhetoric during the past four years, and unfortunately we still have some members of Congress who engage in that. His implication: We need to get those people out. So, will the new administration be “moving in laser-like fashion” towards getting those people out of office? And will part of their new domestic “war” be to criminalize all of the above, with THEM writing the definitions? Glenn Greenwald has a stunning and very important, must-read piece, available at substack.com, on this new war the left plans to wage on domestic terror. By the way, Greenwald leans left politically, so does that make ours an “unholy alliance”? No, it does not! Read his piece, and it’s clear who the real authoritarians are. What Unity, Whose Truth, Moral Evils
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:38 PM PST
by Gary Bauer: What Unity? Yesterday, if you believe the media, Joe Biden delivered “one of the best inaugural addresses ever.” But there were two things in his remarks yesterday that stood out to me and that I want to address here. Biden spoke a lot about unity and insisted that he will be “the president of all the people,” even those who didn’t vote for him. While that’s technically true, what does he really mean by that? As the old adage goes, actions speak louder than words. The unity Biden kept talking about lasted only as long as his speech. As soon as he entered the Oval Office, he promptly signed more than a dozen executive orders and every one was a finger in the eye of conservatives. Biden will operationally be the president of those who elected him. He will be the president of abortion on demand, and he will demand that all Americans, including you, subsidize it. Biden will operationally be the president of those who support open borders, illegal immigration and sanctuary cities, as well as those who want to choose alternative pronouns for themselves. He is allowing immigration from countries that are known hotbeds of terrorism, countries like Iran, Sudan, Syria and North Korea. That’s insane. He abolished President Trump’s 1776 Commission because it was trying to teach young Americans that their country isn’t evil. That speaks volumes. Where is the comfort in telling people that he is going to be the president of those who didn’t vote for him when he has devoted his presidency to relentlessly attacking their values? It would be one thing for a genuine moderate to make such a statement while actually pursuing common ground. Biden isn’t doing that. He is pushing a radical agenda, and his statement is more like rubbing salt into a wound. It’s for appearances only. (More on that below.) Whose Truth? Biden also spoke yesterday about truth and lies. But exactly when did this well-known plagiarist develop such an appreciation for truth? Was it when he and Obama concocted the lie about Russian collusion? The left used that lie to undermine all four years of Trump’s presidency. Was it when he and Obama, just before Trump’s inauguration, tried to entrap General Flynn with a law that had never been enforced before? Biden organized his entire campaign around a lie. He repeatedly said that Donald Trump called neo-Nazis and white supremacists “very fine people,” when the president actually condemned them. By the way, this is actually evidence that we are a decent country. The worst thing you can say about someone in America is that they are a racist. And that is why the left chooses to smear conservatives generally and Donald Trump non-stop with such outrageous lies. But even after liberal media outlets factchecked it and determined that Biden was lying, he still kept lying. It was a major theme of his campaign, and he repeated it even though he knew it would stoke racial tensions. Yet I am constantly hearing commentators on Fox News talk about what a “nice guy” Joe Biden is. No he isn’t! Just ask the families of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas what a “nice guy” Joe Biden is. Meanwhile, Biden and the left have a lot of tolerance for certain lies, like the lie that life doesn’t begin at conception. Science tells us it does, but the left keeps lying about abortion. How about the lie that a man can be a woman or that a woman can be a man? DNA doesn’t lie. Sadly, the biggest lie of recent days is the oft-repeated claim that Joe Biden wants to unify the country and bring us all together. His executive orders and radical policies prove otherwise. https://www.newsmax.com/Fred-Fleitz/iran-nuclear-deal-israel/2015/07/20/id/658011/Pretend Patriotism We saw it yesterday when the National Mall was covered in American flags. They know how strong the emotional appeal of patriotism is for many Americans. But they despise actual patriots. When Donald Trump said, “Make America Great Again,” it resonated with patriots. That’s what any patriot wants. But it drove the left insane. They’re not for “America First.” They’re all about globalism. That’s why one of Biden’s first moves was to put us back into the absurd international Paris climate agreement, which will hurt working-class Americans for a global goal, while enemies like communist China get a pass. Biden also rewarded the World Health Organization, which covered for communist China and lied to the world about COVID-19. Real patriots would not send billions of dollars to Iran, a declared enemy of the United States, or send the Iranian nuclear deal to the U.N. instead of the U.S. Senate for ratification. “Moral Evils” While expressing hope that he and the president might find some areas of agreement, Gomez also warned against the radical policies of Biden’s administration and the dangers they pose to religious liberty. Here are some excerpts of his statement: “I must point out that our new President has pledged to pursue certain policies that would advance moral evils and threaten human life and dignity, most seriously in the areas of abortion, contraception, marriage, and gender. Of deep concern is the liberty of the Church and the freedom of believers to live according to their consciences. . . “For the nation’s bishops, the continued injustice of abortion remains the ‘preeminent priority.’ . . . we cannot stay silent when nearly a million unborn lives are being cast aside in our country year after year through abortion. Abortion is a direct attack on life that also wounds the woman and undermines the family. . . “My hope, too, is that we can work together to finally put in place a coherent family policy in this country, one that acknowledges the crucial importance of strong marriages and parenting to the well-being of children and the stability of communities.” More Riots While Joe Biden is busy preaching unity, one group clearly isn’t listening – Antifa. The black bloc demonstrators rioted again last night in the streets of Portland and Seattle. This time they carried banners that read, “We Don’t Want Biden. We Want Revenge.” They also attacked the Portland Democrat Party headquarters, spray painting “F—k Biden” on the walls. President Biden and members of his administration are vowing to crack down on domestic extremism. If they were serious, they would start by cracking down on Antifa. Unfortunately, they are more worried about members of our military, which means we will be seeing routine Pentagon lectures on critical race theory and white privilege. Thoughts on the 1776 Commission and Its Report
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:35 PM PST Why the controversy? Yes, America is imperfect. And also great.
by Victor Davis Hanson: The newly formed President’s Advisory 1776 Commission just released its report. The group was chaired by Churchill historian and Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn. The vice-chair was Carol M. Swain, a retired professor of political science. (Full disclosure: I was a member of the commission.) The unanimously approved conclusions focused on the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the historical challenges to these founding documents, and the need for civic renewal. The 16-member commission was diverse in the widest sense of the word. It included historians, lawyers, academics, scholars, authors, former elected officials, and former public servants. Whether because the report was issued by a Donald Trump-appointed commission, or because the conclusions questioned the controversial and flawed New York Times-sponsored 1619 Project, the Left almost immediately criticized it. Yet in any age other than the divisive present, the report would not be seen as controversial. First, the commission offered a brief survey of the origins of the Declaration of Independence, published in 1776, and the Constitution, signed in 1787. It emphasized how unusual for the age were the Founders’ commitments to political freedom, personal liberty, and the natural equality endowed by our creator — all the true beginning of the American experiment. The commission reminded us that the Founders were equally worried about autocracy and chaos. So they drafted checks and balances to protect citizens from authoritarianism, known so well from the British Crown, and also from the frenzy of sometimes wild public excess. The report repeatedly focuses on the ideals of the American Founding as well as the centuries-long quest to live up to them. It notes the fragility of such a novel experiment in constitutional republicanism, democratic elections, and self-government — especially during the late-18th-century era of war and factionalism. The report does not whitewash the continuance of many injustices after 1776 and 1787 — in particular chattel slavery concentrated in the South, and voting reserved only for free males. Indeed, the commission explains why and how these wrongs were inconsistent with the letter and spirit of our founding documents. So it was natural that these disconnects would be addressed throughout our history, even fought over, and continually resolved — often over the opposition of powerful interests who sought to reinvent the Declaration and Constitution, transforming them into something that they were not. Two of the most widely referenced Americans in the report are Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King Jr. Both argued, a century apart, for the moral singularity of the U.S. Constitution. Neither wished to replace the Founders’ visions; both instead demanded that they be fully realized and enforced. The report details prior ideological and political challenges to the Constitution as we approach America’s 250th birthday. Some were abjectly evil, such as the near-century-long insistence that the enslavement of African Americans was legal — an amorality that eventually led to more than 600,000 Americans being killed during a Civil War to banish slavery. Some ideologies, such as fascism and communism, were easily identifiable as inimical to our principles. Both occasionally won adherents in times of economic depression and social strife, before they were defeated and discredited abroad. Perhaps more controversially, the commission identifies other challenges, such as continued racism, progressivism, and contemporary identity politics. The report argues how and why all those who have insisted that race become a basis from which to discriminate against entire groups of people are at odds with the logic of the Declaration. Historically, progressivism assumed that human nature is malleable. With enough money and power, Americans supposedly can be improved so that they will accept a more paternalistic government, usually to be run by technocrats. Often, progressives sought to curb the liberties of the individual, under the guise of modernist progress and greater efficiency. The commission was no more sympathetic to the current popularity of identity politics or reparatory racial discrimination. It argues that using race, ethnicity, sexual preference, and gender to define who we are — rather than seeing these traits as incidental when compared with our natural and shared humanity — will lead to a dangerous fragmentation of American society. Finally, the report offers the unifying remedy of renewed civic education. Specifically, it advocates more teaching in our schools of the Declaration, the Constitution, and documents surrounding their creation. It most certainly does not suggest that civic education and American history should ignore or contextualize past national shortcomings. Again, the report argues that our lapses should be envisioned as obstacles to fulfilling the aspirations of our founding. With the change of administrations, the commission may be short-lived, given that it was born in the chaos of the divisive present. President Joe Biden already has sought to terminate the commission through an executive order. But any fair critic can see that the report’s unifying message is that we are a people blessed with a singular government and history, that self-critique and moral improvement are innate to the American Founding and spirit and that America never had to be perfect to be both good and far better than the alternatives. Dr. Hanson was a member of the 1776 Commission. His views here are his own and are not necessarily those of other commission members. The report can be read here. If Biden Truly Wants Unity – 5 Things He Should Do
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:24 PM PST by Megan Marzzacco: Love him or hate him, President Trump kept his promises the last four years. He delivered incredible results, 450 miles of border wall, ending NAFTA, four peace deals, energy independence, a COVID-19 vaccine, to name a few. In his Inaugural speech, Joe Biden declared, “to restore the soul and secure the future of America, requires so much more than words. It requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity.” Sounds lovely, but how can President Biden turn this promise into action? Here are five key ways President Biden could keep his promises, taking cues from Americans for Limited Government Vice President of Public Policy Robert Romano: 1. Biden should call off Trump’s impeachment trial Romano wrote, “This impeachment undermines the peaceful transfer of power almost as much as storming the Capitol did.” In a separate piece, Romano stated, “President Trump never incited anyone. In fact, he urged everyone to be peaceful at the rally. After the violence began, Trump on Twitter urged his followers to stop immediately. So, right off the bat, once again, House Democrats lack a real crime with which to prosecute Trump. What’s more, even if one thought the President was irresponsible for holding the rally given the outcome, the speech the President gave is most certainly covered by the First Amendment — he had every right to give that speech.” Political tensions aside, going through with the impeachment trial is a massive waste of time and resources because if you actually read what’s in our Constitution, there’s not a clear path to impeachment and removal from office if the impeached President is no longer in office! Romano cited Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution, which states: “The President… shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.” And Article I, Section 3, which states “Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States…” In Romano’s words: “In order to remove, there has to be impeachment and conviction. In order to disqualify there has to be removal, and there cannot be removal if Trump is already out of office.” 2. Don’t touch Trump’s tariffs on China ALG’s Romano asserted recently, “President Trump leveraged the tariffs and even threatened sanctions, and as a result, the U.S. trade in goods deficit with China is $35.6 billion lower in the first ten months of 2020 than it was in the first ten months of 2016, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, a 10.2 percent reduction and the lowest it has been since 2011.In the process, unemployment hit a 50-year low as recently as Feb. 2020 before the Covid pandemic struck.” He advised, “Any moves by Biden to, say, rescind the tariffs that were reciprocated by China expanding its territories would be viewed as U.S. weakness — and be a political catastrophe for a Biden administration.” 3. End cancel culture Recently, Romano warned Trump and Parler’s social media takedown “is a wholesale assault on the entire Republican Party. Not just Trump supporters. Make no mistake. This is a bid for one-party rule,” adding, “This is a mortal threat to our republic and our two-party system.” Many Americans agree with Romano, and fear being cancelled. We’re a nation founded on the Constitution, of which the very First Amendment includes the right to free speech. Now Big Tech is so powerful it gets to silence anyone they disagree with? Hell no. Polarization needs to be put aside, and leaders from both parties need to unify and reign in Big Tech tyranny. Romano warned the new administration, “This is dangerous. And it has to stop — before it is too late and we reach the point of no return. We are about to enter into an abyss for which there is no escape.” 4. Allow special counsel John Durham finish his job As Romano noted, “If Durham were to be fired and the investigation was terminated prematurely without any new charges or a final report, it would give the appearance of a cover-up… Biden has a duty to ensure that he and his Justice Department do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Allowing Durham to finish his investigation, and then working with Congress to reform FISA in a bipartisan manner so this never happens again could help restore public confidence in what is perceived to be a two-tiered justice system.” 5. End Coronavirus lockdowns Romano advised, “Really, all Biden needs to do right now is almost nothing, and allow the U.S. economy to fully reopen once the Covid vaccine has been fully administered and the number of daily new cases approaches zero.” Tags: Megan Marzzacco, Americans for Limited Government, If Biden Truly Wants Unity, 5 Things He Should DoTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. 3 Ways Congress Tested Its Commitment to Constitution Over 7 Days
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:35 PM PST
by Kay C. James: While “unprecedented” seemed to be an apt word to describe much of 2020, the beginning of 2021 seems to be continuing the trend by being precedent-breaking in its own right. In the first weeks of 2021, America witnessed Congress face a series of monumental tests of its commitment to the U.S. Constitution, with the outcome of any one of those tests having the potential to dramatically alter the trajectory of our nation. The first test was when Vice President Mike Pence was asked to reject the votes of certain states during Congress’ certification of Electoral College votes. The second test was when the House of Representatives asked the vice president to invoke the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump to force him from office. And the third test was when the House took up an unprecedented second impeachment effort against the president. Any one of these events occurring on its own would be earthshaking. Yet all three happened within the course of just seven days. In the first, Pence followed the constitutionally correct course of action and refused to send “disputed” electoral votes back to the states. Although there were legitimate questions raised about unconstitutional changes to state election laws, as well as potential instances of election fraud, our Constitution does not vest the power in one person to declare those election results invalid. Only Congress has the authority to count votes of the Electoral College. And while some complained about Republican House members and senators raising objections on the floor about the validity of those votes, those members were working within the system, trying to shine a light of transparency on an electoral process that left many doubting the accuracy of the results. They were attempting to create one last check before the votes were certified to help the American people feel that they had election results they could trust. In the second event, the House passed a resolution calling on the vice president to invoke the 25th Amendment to forcibly remove Trump from office. Our Founders designed an electoral process that empowers the American people to choose their leaders through elections. Removing a president outside of that process should be seen only as a last resort. The House resolution didn’t come close to meeting the constitutional standard for the 25th Amendment, which requires that he be “unable” to carry out his duties. That generally means a physical or mental incapacity, which was not the case. While some members of Congress felt convinced that the president should go, the end did not justify the means. The Constitution is not to be used as an emotional outlet or as a tool of political retribution. Again, Pence was right to reject the pressure that was put on him to go down this road. A man of faith, principle, and character, he took an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, and that’s precisely what he did. The third test of Congress’ commitment to the Constitution came in the impeachment of the president. The violence and chaos that took place at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 won’t soon be forgotten. But the Democratic majority in the House faced a choice: follow through on its promise to unify the country and focus on the future, or pursue impeachment in an attempt to establish a historical precedent and appease its base. Our nation needs time to heal from an ugly election, division among our people, and an appalling Capitol riot where lives were lost. That healing not only requires a peaceful transition of power, but efforts by all Americans to reject the rancor in our politics and instead strive to work together for a better future. The House could have chosen country over party and unity over divisive politics, but it didn’t. While exercising its impeachment powers may be constitutional, the House’s vote to impeach a president with less than a week left in office seemed to be more about using the Constitution as a tool for revenge than using it as the Founders had intended. In each of these three critical constitutional tests, the decision should never have been about taking one side or the other to support those we favor or to maintain power for a preferred candidate or party. It should have always been—and should always be—first and foremost about siding with the Constitution and, secondly, with the public’s best interest. Unfortunately, too often during these tests, too many of our leaders failed, and that should weigh heavily on the heart of every American. As tests usually do, they confirmed who in our government we can trust to follow the Constitution and who needs to brush up on the very document they took an oath to uphold. Tags: Kay C. Sleepy Joe And Tucker Have It Wrong: The Only Peaceful Way Out Is To Opt Out
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 09:08 PM PST by Bob Maistros: “I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days. I know that the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. But I also know they are not new … our better angels have always prevailed. In each of these moments, enough of us – enough of us – have come together to carry all of us forward, and we can do that now.” — Joe Biden, inaugural address “The idea that groups of Americans will somehow break off into separate peaceful nations of like-minded citizens is a fantasy.” — Tucker Carlson, Jan. 6 monologue America Is Over. It’s Time To Opt Out – by Bob Maistros Some pro tips, Mr. Fake President, if you want to hold forth on “unity”:
Sleepy Joe’s still shocking ascendancy to the nation’s highest office completes a neat trick for Democrats: a seemingly total rout that has their opponents divided, dispirited and thoroughly on the run. They fabricated and stretched out a tale of foreign collusion to cripple Donald Trump’s administration for an astonishing three years. Impeached The Donald on gobsmackingly empty non-charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice. Executed a fraud so vast and brazen it undoubtedly has Venezuelan Chavistas and Zimbabwe African National Unionists shaking their heads in bewilderment and admiration. (If you still doubt that for a micro-millisecond, you haven’t read this analysis by respected Catholic University political scientist Claes Ryn). Equally brazenly attacked Trumpers challenging the results, based on Everests of statistical, testimonial, audio-visual and physical and evidence, for having – wait for it – no evidence. And, subsequently, as Sleepy Joe did Wednesday, amid his laughable call for “a little tolerance and humility,” for spewing “lies told for power and for profit.” And now seized upon a protest gone wrong, thanks to a collection of motley misfits gone rogue, to:
In the midst of all of this, you can dare to assert “enough of us have come together to carry all of us forward, and we can do that now.” I’ll say it for you: Joe, it ain’t so. There’s no way you can “unite our people” when you and your cohort are characterizing more than 200 million of them as racists and supremacists. No chance to “join forces, stop the shouting, and lower the temperature” when your team is categorizing opposing viewpoints as “more dangerous than al Qaeda.” And no path to “carry all of us forward” when you launch your invalid administration with divisive, literally in-your-opponents’-face actions. Like requiring masks, reversing the job-creating Keystone XL Pipeline, rejoining anti-American agreements and international organizations, and roaring “olly, olly, oxen free” to caravans of illegal immigrants who lower wages and steal jobs (plus vote Democrat). The New America “Opt-Out” is far from a fantasy. It’s now, more than ever, an inevitability. The eminent Nixon-era economist Herb Stein posited his famous law: “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.” Here’s the “Maistros Corollary:” If something must happen, it will. Sleepy Joe’s yawningly hyperbolic, monumentally hypocritical and damagingly hypercharged inaugural oration has only underscored that there is no longer room in a single country for working-class Americans and the Ruling Class that alternately wants to expel and enslave them. This Constructed-of-Whole-Cloth Commander-in-Chief has made it crystal clear: The elite sees us as enemies of their state. And since, as Sen. Lindsey Graham has pointed out, their success in stealing an election ensures another Republican will never be voted into high office, the only peaceful way out is to opt out. It must happen. And it will, sooner than you can even imagine. Biden Immigration Outline: A Wish-List for Open Borders Lobby
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:37 PM PST
by Chris Chmielenski: President Biden has proposed amnesty for more than 11 million illegal aliens, a massive expansion of legal immigration, and the dismantling of enforcement if yet to be released legislation is anything like an outline provided by the new Administration hours before Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. To be clear, NumbersUSA has yet to see legislative text of the Biden proposal. But if the coming legislation is anything like the outline released by the new Administration earlier today, this is not a serious attempt to reform our nation’s immigration laws, and instead is a wish-list for the open borders lobby. Here are some of the highlights of the plan:
We expect former Gang of 8 member Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) to introduce legislation reflecting the plan over the next few days. If today’s outline is a fair representation of his legislation, then Republicans should immediately dismiss it as a non-serious offer. There are early signs that Republicans will do just that. Former Gang of 8 member Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) had this to say about the plan: ————————- Chris Chmielenski is Deputy Director – NumbersUSA. The Totalitarian Left Moves to Silence All Dissent
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:03 PM PST by Pamela Geller: In an article that was picked up by the Mercury News, Ethan Baron of the Bay Area News Group wrote Tuesday that “A week after false claims of a stolen U.S. presidential election drove a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Twitter is allowing a far-right supporter of President Donald Trump to claim the election was stolen.” Baron’s intention was clear: he wants Twitter to ban me, as it banned Trump, for telling truths they want buried. His article shows how monstrous and totalitarian the left really is: leftists think they can publicly call for the censoring and banning of someone whose views they hate, and just like that, you disappear. The left and its propaganda arm, the establishment media, are now working hard to make it illegal, and get you banned from social media, to state the obvious fact that the election was stolen. The Democrats are seeking to criminalize and penalize anyone who says the election was stolen. Their “insurrection” hoax, and impeachment of the president without due process or giving him the chance to defend himself, is designed to shut down any and all talk of their infamous election fraud. This is not the behavior of people who know they won fair and square and are watching their opponents have a tantrum about it. This is the action of the guilty. That said, the election was stolen. The mountains of evidence of election fraud were never examined in any court, and then we were told that there was no evidence at all, or if there was any, it had already been dismissed in court challenges. The court cases were all dismissed on technicalities and procedural issues, not because there was no evidence of voter fraud. That evidence has still not been examined. But it is a hallmark of the rapidly advancing totalitarianism of our age that thumbsuckers like Ethan Baron think they can kill you with righteous indignation. He wrote: “Anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller, in a tweet Monday about banks freezing political donations after a pro-Trump mob stormed the seat of the U.S. government, said the banks’ decision was, ‘Further proof the election was stolen.’” I am not “anti-Muslim” any more than foes of the Nazis were “anti-German,” but that’s another story. Baron offered no counterargument to my contention about the banks. He just presented it as if it were self-evidently false and egregious. Baron knew, of course, that he didn’t have to show that what I said was inaccurate. All he had to do was point out that I had deviated from the leftist line, and the jackbooted neo-fascists who run Twitter and the other social media platforms would spring into action. It was reminiscent of the media outrage that was directed at me in May 2015, when I hosted the Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest in Garland, Texas that was the site of the first ISIS attack on American soil. I was raked over the coals not just on CNN, but also on Fox, which hadn’t yet switched sides then, and by conservative spokesmen who should have known better. I was defending the freedom of speech against violent intimidation. We never saw the hate and attacks that were directed at me in the wake of that event in Garland directed at the Fort Hood jihadi, the Times Square jihad bomber, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony jihad bomber, the Boston Marathon jihad bombers, the New York subway jihad bomber, or any other jihadis. We have never seen the media hatred and anything like the attacks that were directed at me directed towards the jihadists who beheaded journalist after journalist (their own!), or towards those who beheaded hundreds of Christians, executed them because they were non-Muslims, or towards the perpetrators of the ongoing genocide of non-Muslims and secular Muslims in Muslim countries. If we had a responsible media, they would stand for the freedom of speech as we did in Garland. If we had a responsible media, it would be applauding the fact that some people are still standing up and telling the truth about the election despite the immense pressure from powerful forces to stop doing so. How do these people not understand this most basic, elemental concept of freedom? I didn’t start this war for the freedom of speech, but I won’t lie down and submit, either. Twitter and the rest may heed Baron and ban me. But even then, this isn’t over. What remains to be seen is whether the free world will finally wake up and stand for the freedom of speech, or instead kowtow to this evil and continue to denounce me and others like me. What’s really frightening and astonishing about this assault on our freedom of speech is the number of people cheering on the silencing of dissent from the establishment line. I never expected that from my fellow Americans. But if the darkness of totalitarianism does come to the United States, it will be thanks to them and to the likes of Ethan Baron. Trump Rule Restores Banking Fairness
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:27 PM PST by Jason Ouimet: In late November, the Trump administration provided a lifeline to the gun industry with a rulemaking that would restore access to the products and services of America’s largest banks. Modern commercial activity depends on tools like payment processing and lines of credit. Gun-control advocates have sought to exploit this reality by depriving firearms businesses of the financial services they need to survive. After all, without companies producing and selling firearms and ammunition, there can be no American gun owners. The most infamous example of this tactic occurred during the Obama/Biden administration and involved the government itself. Following the economic crisis of 2008, which resulted in taxpayer bailouts of large national banks, Congress passed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank). The act purported to improve the resiliency of the U.S. financial markets and to protect consumers from abuse. In practice, however, the Obama/Biden administration used a supposed initiative against banking fraud to target industries that offended their sensibilities. Dubbed Operation Choke Point (OCP), the scheme was a coordinated effort by banking regulators purportedly to spur the finance industry to more actively manage risks posed by their customers. Revelations by watchdogs, congressional investigators, and litigation, however, demonstrated the regulators were pressuring banks to reject credit-worthy customers in legitimate industries on the basis of the regulators’ own ideological objections to them. These included sales of firearms and ammunition, both of which were singled out on a list of “high-risk” merchants the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation provided to banks in a 2011 guidance document. In the circular reasoning of OCP, it wasn’t just the businesses’ legality or financial performance that created the hazard, but the “reputation risk” they supposedly posed to banks by provoking the ire of anti-gun activists. The worst of the activism, however, was coming from the regulators themselves. They made it understood that the banks could face expensive and damaging investigations for serving disfavored clients. Banks took heed and soon began avoiding the “high-risk” industries entirely. Financially sound and well-performing firearm companies suddenly found themselves dropped by their banks or refused new banking services. The Obama/Biden administration backpedaled when the scheme came to light. The 2011 guidance was retroactively modified and new guidance was issued emphasizing case-by-case risk management, rather than debanking of entire industries. The regulators denied wrongdoing, insisting the banks misunderstood their intentions. Yet, anti-gun activists subsequently embraced OCP’s tactics, openly calling for discrimination against the firearms industry. In 2018, for example, The New York Times published an essay that called for the finance sector to “effectively set new rules for the sales of guns in America,” arguing, “Collectively they have more leverage over the gun industry than any lawmaker.” The essay noted that various payment processors had dropped gun companies entirely and that banks could follow suit, including by dictating what and to whom firearm companies could sell. After Democrats took over various congressional committees in the 2018 midterms, hearings were held to publicly berate and browbeat officers of large national banks, including for serving firearm-industry clients. While the Obama/Biden Administration tried to disavow OCP as a conspiracy theory, newly-emboldened Democrats were unabashedly insisting that banks had a “corporate responsibility” to curb their relationships with the gun industry. All the while, firearm-related businesses found their options for financial services shrinking. The Trump Justice Department officially repudiated OCP in 2017. The new rulemaking by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) goes even further to correct this injustice. Based on the Dodd-Frank mandate for “fair treatment of customers,” it would require large banks to provide access to all the products they offer to every law-abiding customer who is able to satisfy predetermined “quantitative, impartial risk-based standards.” The rule would also prohibit activists and federally-chartered banks from conspiring to deprive otherwise-eligible customers of financial services for political reasons. Under Obama/Biden, and through the subsequent efforts of anti-gun activists, the finance industry was weaponized as a tool of political oppression. The Trump administration rulemaking, by contrast, encourages banks to promote lawful economic activity and manage financial risk, while leaving policy decisions about what sorts of businesses are permissible in the first place to the political branches and the U.S. Constitution. This is exactly why all patriotic Americans should support it … and why you can expect the gun-control lobby and their fellow travelers in banking boardrooms to vigorously oppose it. Biden Gives DOJ Green Light to Resume Obama-era ‘Slush Fund’ Payouts to Liberal Groups
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST Justice Department had ceased the practice early in President Trump’s administration
by Ronn Blitzer: President-elect Joe Biden is calling for the Justice Department to look into reinstating a controversial Obama-era practice that allowed prosecutors to make settlement agreements that resulted in defendants paying outside groups instead of victims or the government. The Trump administration had put an end to these payments following a 2017 memo from then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions which was reflected in the Justice Department’s manual.”When the federal government settles a case against a corporate wrongdoer, any settlement funds should go first to the victims and then to the American people — not to bankroll third-party special interest groups or the political friends of whoever is in power,” Sessions said in 2017.A Republican-backed bill known as the “Stop Settlement Slush Funds Act of 2017” would have made the practice illegal. “Congress must permanently end the abuses Obama’s Justice Department exploited to use settlements to funnel money to their liberal friends,” then-Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., who sponsored the bill in the House, said in 2017. Goodlatte’s bill never became law, but the Sessions-era DOJ policy did become an official agency rule that officially went into effect in December 2020. The rule allows for limited exceptions for “an otherwise lawful payment or loan that provides restitution or compensation to a victim,” situations where “a trusted third party” is needed to deliver funds due to concerns over foreign corruption, payments for legal or other professional services related to the case, and payments that are otherwise “expressly authorized” by a statute or regulation. The rule is now part of a list of federal agency actions to be reviewed pursuant to Biden’s upcoming executive order titled, “Protecting Public Health and the Environment and Restoring Science to Tackle the Climate Crisis.” Fox News reached out to the Biden transition team for comment, but they did not immediately respond. Past instances of settlements involving payments to third-party groups include a $17 billion settlement agreement where Bank of America was required to pay nonprofit organizations to resolve an investigation into its role in the sale of mortgage-backed securities before the 2008 financial crisis. That agreement was struck under then-Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department. In another agreement, Gibson Guitar Corp. had to contribute to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to resolve a criminal investigation into allegations it illegally imported exotic wood. Paul Larkin, a senior legal research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, wrote in 2016 that the practice was “improper and unlawful,” arguing that it was barred by the Appropriations Clause, violated ethics principles, and worked as an “end run around” the Antideficiency Act and Miscellaneous Receipts Act. “No private lawyer could give away a client’s settlement money, and no government lawyer may do so either. It is time for this unlawful practice to end,” Larkin wrote. Will Joe Biden Allow Special Counsel John Durham to Finish his Job and Get to the Bottom of Spygate?
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:38 PM PST by Robert Romano: Say what you will about outgoing President Donald Trump, but one thing he never did was fire former Special Counsel Robert Mueller. In fact, President Trump let Special Counsel Mueller finish his job investigating false allegations the President and his campaign had conspired with Russia to steal the 2016 election. It was the Mueller report that ultimately exonerated Trump, with Mueller concluding in his 2019 report that, “[T]he investigation did not establish that members of the Trump Campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities,” and “the evidence does not establish that the President was involved in an underlying crime related to Russian election interference.” Now, the question is whether incoming President Joe Biden will allow Special Counsel John Durham to finish his job in pursuing his own ongoing criminal investigation into the origins of the botched investigation into Trump and Russia. According to the Oct. 19, 2020 order appointing Durham, former Attorney General William Barr wrote, “On May 13, 2019, I directed United States Attorney John Durham to conduct a preliminary review into certain matters related to the 2016 presidential election campaigns, and Mr. Durham’s review subsequently developed into a criminal investigation, which remains ongoing. Following consultation with Mr. Durham, I have determined that, in light of the extraordinary circumstances relating to these matters, the public interest warrants Mr. Durham continuing this investigation pursuant to the powers and independence afforded by the Special Counsel regulations. Accordingly, by virtue of the authority vested in the Attorney General, including 28 U.S.C. §§ 509, 510, and 515, in order to discharge my responsibility to provide supervision and management of the Department of Justice, and to ensure a full and thorough investigation of these matters…John Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, is appointed to serve as Special Counsel for the Department of Justice.” In addition, Barr set forth Durham’s broad jurisdiction: “The Special Counsel is authorized to investigate whether any federal official, employee, or any other person or entity violated the law in connection with the intelligence, counter-intelligence, or law-enforcement activities directed at the 2016 presidential campaigns, individuals associated with those campaigns, and individuals associated with the administration of President Donald J. Trump, including but not limited to Crossfire Hurricane and the investigation of Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller, Ill.” Additionally, in his explanatory letter to the House and Senate Judiciary Committees, dated Dec. 1, Barr added, “Although I had expected Mr. Durham to complete his work by the summer of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as additional information he uncovered, prevented him from doing so. In advance of the presidential election, I decided to appoint Mr. Durham as a Special Counsel to provide him and his team with the assurance that they could complete their work, without regard to the outcome of the election.” Biden has very good reasons to steer clear of the Durham probe. For starters, Barr has already advertised that Durham is deep into an ongoing criminal investigation. Laws were broken. That much we know. Biden certainly could fire Durham under his Article II appointment powers. But if Durham were to be fired and the investigation was terminated prematurely without any new charges or a final report, it would give the appearance of a cover-up. And it would come at a time when there are still more revelations to come as President Trump at the last minute on Jan. 19 has declassified a trove of documents related to the original investigation by the FBI. From the memorandum: “At my request, on December 30, 2020, the Department of Justice provided the White House with a binder of materials related to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation. Portions of the documents in the binder have remained classified and have not been released to the Congress or the public. I requested the documents so that a declassification review could be performed and so I could determine to what extent materials in the binder should be released in unclassified form. I determined that the materials in that binder should be declassified to the maximum extent possible. In response, and as part of the iterative process of the declassification review, under a cover letter dated January 17, 2021, the Federal Bureau of Investigation noted its continuing objection to any further declassification of the materials in the binder and also, on the basis of a review that included Intelligence Community equities, identified the passages that it believed it was most crucial to keep from public disclosure. I have determined to accept the redactions proposed for continued classification by the FBI in that January 17 submission.” The order added, “I hereby declassify the remaining materials in the binder. This is my final determination under the declassification review and I have directed the Attorney General to implement the redactions proposed in the FBI’s January 17 submission and return to the White House an appropriately redacted copy.” Meaning, whether Durham completes his investigation or is stopped by the Biden White House, there is more information to come on the origins of the investigation into Trump that falsely alleged he was a Russian agent, using the dossier of former British spy Christopher Steele that was paid for by the Democratic National Committee and the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016 to distract from Clinton’s own private email server containing classified information scandal. No word yet on whether that will include new information on the Jan. 5, 2017 Oval Office meeting with former President Barack Obama, then-Vice President Biden, former FBI Director James Comey and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates that a now fully declassified letter former National Security Advisor Susan Rice wrote to herself on Jan. 20, 2017, memorializing the meeting, showing the investigation was ordered by Obama to be carried over into the Trump administration. Per Rice’s summary “On January 5, following a briefing by IC leadership on Russian hacking during the 2016 Presidential election, President Obama had a brief follow-on conversation with FBI Director Jim Comey and Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in the Oval Office. Vice President Biden and I were also present.” This was the Russian interference into the 2016 election briefing given a day before then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper issued the joint intelligence assessment on the same. However, the version that was given to former President Barack Obama and then-President-Elect Trump on Jan. 5, 2017 included some of the false allegations leveled by the Steele dossier that Trump was a Russian agent. This was the same dossier that led to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants aimed at former Trump campaign advisor Carter Page beginning in Oct. 2016, his contacts in the campaign, and his contact’s contacts in the campaign and into Trump’s inner circle. There is also no word yet on what direction Durham has taken in his investigation, although it has already been said that neither Biden nor Obama are subjects of the investigation. In May 2020, when Barr was tasking Durham on the investigation, he stated at a press conference, “As to President Obama and Vice President Biden, whatever their level of involvement, based on the information I have today, I don’t expect Mr. Durham’s work will lead to a criminal investigation of either man.” As President, Biden has a duty to ensure that he and his Justice Department do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Allowing Durham to finish his investigation, and then working with Congress to reform FISA in a bipartisan manner so this never happens again could help restore public confidence in what is perceived to be a two-tiered justice system. When the shoe was on the other foot, an entire section of the Mueller report examined potential obstruction of justice by Trump for discussing potentially firing Mueller with then-White House Counsel Don McGahn. It ultimately ducked on the question of constitutional authority of firing Mueller and instead focused on a disagreement between President Trump and McGahn over whether the President had ordered McGahn to fire Mueller, and whether Trump’s alleged direction of McGahn to change his story had constituted obstruction. Whatever really happened, Mueller was not fired. Trump had every reason after the firing of former FBI Director James Comey to shut down Mueller too for continuing an investigation that had a false pretense and was tearing the country apart. But he didn’t. And that is the standard by which Biden will be judged when it comes to Durham. 11 Big Moves Biden Could Make on His First Day as President
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:41 PM PST by Fred Lucas: Joe Biden will have a busy day after taking the oath of office as president at noon Wednesday, as the Biden campaign promised and incoming chief of staff Ron Klain recently affirmed. Klain issued what has become a widely reported Jan. 16 memo on Biden’s first 10 days as president, laying out a plan to aggressively make changes that won’t require action by Congress. “On Inauguration Day, President-elect Biden will sign roughly a dozen actions to combat the four crises,” Klain wrote, specifying “the COVID-19 crisis, the resulting economic crisis, the climate crisis, and a racial equity crisis.” Just as outgoing President Donald Trump reversed many of predecessor Barack Obama’s executive actions, Biden is about to do the same to Trump. Here are 11 major actions Americans can expect from Biden on Day One. 1. Enforcing Restroom Choice However, the Trump administration reversed Obama’s school bathroom policy, asserting that Title IX covers sex but not gender identity. “On his first day in office, Biden will reinstate the Obama-Biden guidance revoked by the Trump-Pence administration, which will restore transgender students’ access to sports, bathrooms, and locker rooms in accordance with their gender identity,” the Biden campaign said on its website. “He will direct his Department of Education to vigorously enforce and investigate violations of transgender students’ civil rights.” 2. Welcoming Illegal Immigrants “The president-elect … will continue to advance legislative solutions to critical problems, such as in the immigration bill he will send to Congress on his first day in office,” Klain wrote to the transition team. Klain didn’t provide details about the immigration legislation in the memo, but it likely will include a bill to provide legal status to the nation’s 11 million or more illegal immigrants, as mentioned by the campaign. On his first day in office, the campaign said, Biden “will send to Congress a bill for legislative immigration reform that will modernize our immigration system and give nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants a roadmap to citizenship.” Without explaining, the Klain memo also said that Biden will take executive action on his first day to “restore humanity to our immigration system.” 3. Rejoining Climate Pact The United States will rejoin the United Nations’ Paris Agreement, which includes 174 countries, on Inauguration Day, the Klain memo says. According to a report from The Heritage Foundation, the energy regulations accepted by the Obama administration as part of the accord could have killed hundreds of thousands of jobs, harmed American manufacturing, and destroyed $2.5 trillion in gross domestic product by the year 2035. The agreement also could have been a barrier to America’s achieving 3% economic growth, the think tank concluded. Biden won’t stop there, according to his campaign: 4. Lifting Travel Ban The administration’s travel restrictions covered North Korea, Venezuela, Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen. The list of countries initially included Sudan. The Biden campaign had pledged: “As president, Joe will rescind the Trump administration’s Muslim ban on Day One and urge Congress to pass the No Ban Act to ensure future administrations cannot restore Trump’s ban.” 5. Opening Vaccination Centers Biden said Jan. 15 that he would order the federal government to establish vaccination centers on his first day in office. “On my first day in office, I will instruct the Federal Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, to begin setting up the first of these centers,” Biden said. “By the end of our first month in office, we will have 100 federally supported centers across the nation that will ultimately vaccinate millions of people.” 6. Imposing Mask Mandate Biden wanted to impose a national mask mandate, but advisers reportedly determined that would lack the constitutional authority to do so. In what largely will be a symbolic move on existing policy, Biden will launch a “100-Day Masking Challenge” expected to include a mask mandate on federal property and during interstate travel. Many health experts have been skeptical of the effectiveness of such a national mask mandate. 7. Boosting Union Power “On Biden’s first day in office, he will restore federal employees’ rights to organize and bargain collectively, and will direct his agencies to bargain with federal employee unions over nonmandatory subjects of bargaining,” his campaign said. In his four years, Trump helped curb the power of federal unions, a plan upheld in courts. As part of a move for civil service reform, Trump also made it somewhat easier to fire federal employees, who are known for being nearly impossible to terminate for cause. 8. Canceling Student Loan Debt “As previously announced, [Biden] will ask the … Department of Education to extend the existing pause on student loan payments and interest for millions of Americans with federal student loans,” the memo says. Biden’s campaign website called for forgiving “all undergraduate tuition-related federal student debt from two- and four-year public colleges for debt-holders earning up to $125,000.” 9. Creating ‘Right’ to Housing In light of the economic downturn during the COVID-19 pandemic, Klain said, Biden will sign an executive order to “extend nationwide restrictions on evictions and foreclosures and provide more than 25 million Americans greater stability, instead of living on the edge every month.” Biden also seeks to enforce a national right to housing—and intends to lay the groundwork on his first day, caccording to the campaign: 10. Halting Federal Executions Since July, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has executed c13 death row inmates, the last on Saturday, according to The Associated Press. The executions followed a 17-year hiatus by the federal government, and Trump set a 120-year record for a president in executions on his watch, AP reported. 11. Achieving ‘Racial Equality‘ —Require “communities receiving certain federal funding to proactively examine housing patterns and identify and address policies that have discriminatory effects.” —Direct the Department of Housing and Urban Development to funnel “increased resources to measuring and identifying discrimination in the housing market through such strategies as paired testing and correspondence audits.” —Roll back actions by the Trump administration, “including restrictions on labor rights, collective bargaining, and unions.” From Jan. 21 through Feb. 1, the Klain memo also said, Biden’s actions will include executive actions on COVID-19 that could help reopen schools and businesses while expanding testing. Biden also will push for more coronavirus-related economic relief, according to the memo. He also plans executive actions on “Buy American” provisions, criminal justice reform, and more on climate change. A Win in the Financial Sector for the Firearms Industry
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:49 PM PST by Garrett O’Leary: The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) released a finalized rule Thursday to end discrimination by financial service providers against the firearms industry and more. The rule will “ensure fair access to banking services provided by large national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign bank organizations.” In essence, the rule guarantees that fair access to banking is given to all industries based on financial merit, rather than for political reasons. It effectively protects those in the financial-services industry from pressures levied upon them by special interests groups who stand against the Second Amendment. “The rule, in other words, would refocus banks on doing their jobs of helping to promote lawful economic activity and managing financial risk while leaving policy decisions about what sorts of businesses are permissible in the first place to the political branches and the U.S. Constitution,” reported NRA-ILA. Discrimination against the firearms industry, and other “sin industries,” began under the Obama administration. They sought to circumvent the democratic processes by pressuring banks to sever ties with the firearms industry. As previously reported by America’s 1st Freedom, “Once, financial-services companies were neutral players in policy debates. Policy controlled them, but they were not creating social policies. That is no longer the case. Now some banks and other companies in the financial-services sector are pushing gun-control policies.” This new rule from the OCC will rectify such mistreatment and malpractice in the purportedly neutral financial-services sector, ensuring that Americans will be able to continue to exercise their constitutional right to keep and bear arms. “As Comptrollers and staff in previous administrations have made clear in speeches, guidance, and testimony, banks should not terminate services to entire categories of customers without conducting individual risk assessments. It is inconsistent with basic principles of prudent risk management to make decisions based solely on conclusory or categorical assertions of risk without actual analysis. Moreover, elected officials should determine what is legal and illegal in our country,” said Acting Comptroller of the Currency Brian P. Brooks. These new rules still allow banks to to freely make business decisions. This rule change simply “requires covered banks to make those products and services they choose to offer available to all customers in the communities they serve, based on consideration of quantitative, impartial, risk-based standards established by the bank,” says the press release. Godfather of the Pro-life Movement, Joe Scheidler, Dies at Age 93
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:27 PM PST
Pro-lifers today stand on the shoulders of giants. Joe Scheidler made invaluable contributions to the pro-life movement. Known as the godfather of the pro-life movement, Scheidler was famous for his street activism. “He learned his direct-action techniques from the 1960s civil rights movement, when he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” according to Celebrate Life, a publication of the American Life League, the organization which Scheidler founded in 1980. Scheidler gained national prominence as chief defendant in the landmark NOW v. Scheidler, filed by the National Organizaiton for Women (NOW) which accused him of being a member “in a nationwide conspiracy to obstruct women’s access to abortion clinics through a pattern of racketeering activity including the actual or implied threat of violence.” The case ended up before the U.S. Supreme Court three times. In 2003 and 2006, the justices ruled in his favor, 8-0, notching a major victory for the right of Americans to protest. “My father’s proudest accomplishment was the pro-life work of those he inspired to take an active role in the fight against abortion, the greatest injustice of our time,” said Eric Scheidler, Joe’s oldest son, who serves as the League’s executive director. “For years, people have been telling me about the talk or protest where they met my father, and how his words and example prompted them to do more than just talk, but to take responsibility for addressing the injustice.” “I’m grateful that he passed away surrounded by family, in the comfort of his home, his refuge from the rigors of his pro-life mission,” Eric told the Chicago Sun-Times. “His memory will be cherished by the thousands whom he inspired to join him on the front lines of the pro-life movement.” “Joe Scheidler has been a personal friend and mentor for 30 years,” noted Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue. “His book ‘Closed!’ inspired me to focus on closing down abortion mills.” “The 70% reduction of abortion clinics across America is directly attributable to the great Joe Scheidler,” asserted Newman. “I’m proud to stand on his shoulders. May God grant him eternal rest.” “Joe Scheidler devoted his life to ensuring every child was treated with dignity and respect and joyfully welcomed into this life,” said Rev. Pat Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition in Washington, D.C. “His commitment to ‘loving the least of these,’ has been an inspirational witness and example to countless pro-life leaders through the years.” “In the 35 years I have known Joe, it wasn’t just his dedication to ending abortion violence that impacted so many in our movement. It was also his kindness, humility and servant’s heart. Joe was truly interested in you as a person and was always supportive of your work and organization. He was never competitive, self promoting or focused only on what he was doing,” attested Mahoney. “Joe never put himself forward but shared the spotlight with all. I have to say in my four decades of pro-life work, I have never seen someone more beloved or respected than Joe Scheidler.” “Heartbroken to hear about the death of pro-life hero and leader for decades, Joe Scheidler,” tweeted Lila Rose, founder and president of LiveAction. “A cheerful, loving force for the most vulnerable, he inspired me and many.” “Pro-lifers today stand on the shoulders of giants. Joe Scheidler made invaluable contributions to the pro-life movement,” wrote Michael New, conservative Catholic professor and author. “We all owe him an immense debt of gratitude.” “I have countless memories of Joe, whether we were together fishing on Lake Michigan, praying to the Lord inside the Supreme Court as they were hearing his case, or saving babies in front of abortion mills. Every conversation with him was an inspiration to double my pro-life efforts,” said Father Frank Pavone, Director of Priests for Life, in a statement. “Joe’s victory was a victory for the whole pro-life movement,” Father Pavone said of the 2006 Supreme Court case. “And the inspiring example of his life will bring us many more victories in the future.” “Joe was our raison d’être — the only reason and sole cause for the Thomas More Society’s coming into existence,” explained Tom Brejcha, president, chief counsel, and founder of the Thomas More Society, in a statement. “His unduly long, litigious persecution on the part of the National Organization for Women and the nation’s abortion industry — which lasted over nearly three-decades in a landmark court battle, NOW v. Scheidler — was the crucible in which our Thomas More Society was forged,” said Brejcha. Brejcha added that Scheidler’s “uncompromising commitment to the sanctity of human life has inspired generations and motivated many to move from complacency to militant albeit peaceful protest on behalf of the preborn.” Joe Scheidler was born on September 7, 1927, in Hartford City, Indiana. After serving in the U.S. Navy as a military policeman at the end of World War II, he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications at the University of Notre Dame and a master’s degree at Marquette University. He spent eight years in religious life, studying for the Catholic priesthood at St. Meinrad Seminary in Indiana, according to biography provided by the Pro-Life Action League. After discerning that God was not calling him to the priesthood, he served as a teacher at Mundelein College, during which time he chaperoned a group of students on a pilgrimage to march with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. “It’s fitting that my father died on the day when Americans remember the legacy of Martin Luther King,” noted Eric Scheidler. “Seeing the impact that regular Americans could have by taking action against racial injustice inspired my father to mobilize Americans in the same way in the fight against the injustice of abortion.” Tags: Doug Mainwaring, Abortion, American Life League, Joe Scheidler, Now V. For Trump, a Personnel Best
Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:25 PM PST by Tony Perkins: When frustrated people decided to take things into their own hands January 6th, a lot of Americans got hurt. There were the actual victims — the men and women who lost their lives and others who were injured. But because of the Left’s double standard, there were also good and decent Americans who will have to live with the fallout of what happened, even if they condemned the lawlessness. Some were there — like the peaceful protestors who desperately wanted to be counted. Others weren’t, but they were just as concerned about the future of elections after what happened in November. But the group that will suffer most are the people who deserve it least: the hard-working men and women of the Trump administration, who spent four, long years trying to set our nation right again. When Marine One carries Donald Trump away from the White House for the last time, Americans won’t just be losing a president. They’ll be losing an army of tireless pro-lifers, freedom fighters, and deeply committed patriots too. Those are the men and women who, when the president was out front exchanging blows with the Left, kept their heads down — working as hard as humanly possible to make his conservative agenda a reality. They’re the ones who, despite the firestorm around them these last two weeks, pressed on — no matter how much mud the media slung their way. In these last handful of days, while others might have been tempted to clean out their offices, these unsung heroes have worked until the final whistle — issuing rules, proclamations, and other policy changes that will make it harder for Joe Biden to undo what they’ve accomplished. Not surprisingly, the media isn’t interested in covering that story since it might interfere with the narrative that everyone who worked for this president is a bloodthirsty, racist insurrectionist. The truth is quite different. When all is said and done Wednesday, the conservative movement will be in a much better position because of the determination of men and women at every level of government. And we owe our friends a great debt of gratitude for it. While the rest of the world is distracted with a flagrant display of the lawlessness at the Capitol, the rank and file of the Trump administration refused to let that stop them. With the president’s blessing, they’ve issued a preemptive proclamation on the National Sanctity of Human Life Day (which happens to fall on Joe Biden’s watch this Sunday) and School Choice Week. They’ve also taken the opportunity to tell any incoming extremists that if they think they can waltz in and abolish girls’ sports on some misguided legal authority, they’re wrong. And the Department of Education made sure to leave them a 13-page memo explaining why. At the Department of Labor, Secretary Eugene Scalia used these last few days to publish a final rule on religious freedom, making it harder for the new administration to sever ties and contracts with faith-based groups. Our friends at HHS followed suit, making sure to leave one rule looming over Biden’s new agency. Under the Office of Civil Rights, Roger Severino’s team made it clear that a) hospitals and other federally-funded health centers have an obligation to help infants who survive an abortion; and b) that no one rations care or discriminates because of a patient’s disability. “This rule will promote the fundamental American principle that all lives are created with equal worth and dignity, no matter the circumstances…” Roger insisted. Even the Office of Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) got in on the act, firing a warning shot to banks, savings associations, and other financial institutions eager to cancel accounts based on a customer’s political ideology or industry. If banks want sever ties with certain companies or people, they need to justify those decision “quantitatively and objectively,” OCC insists. “This is just a nondiscrimination principle. If you’re not going to serve somebody for a service that you have chosen to offer to others…then you have to do the homework and show why this person is risky.” Interestingly, OCC’s move was in the works long before January 6, when Democrats started demanding that companies stop doing business with Republicans. The initial reason for the rule was because too many financial groups were blacklisting the oil industry. But now, with liberals demanding that banks crackdown on Trump officials and other conservatives, this new “fair access” policy might have arrived just in time. Over at Homeland Security, even Chad Wolf’s decision to step down was done out of a desire to protect the agency’s accomplishments. After days of speculation about the reasons for Wolf’s resignation, he stopped by “Washington Watch” to set the record straight. He explained that over the last several months, his department has been tied up in litigation over whether his title as “Acting Secretary” (and his predecessor’s) gave him the authority to make certain decisions. After a handful of negative rulings, Wolf decided, “There was no longer a legal means to resolve these cases. So anything that I did going forward, even over the last eight to 10 days of the administration, would be litigated, would be challenged. And we were continuing to lose these cases, so I wanted to make sure that the consequential work that the department had done over the last four years was in good hands… I didn’t want to put the department at risk.” It was a selfless act — something that’s come to define, not just DHS, but so many of the Trump administration’s leaders. So while the media and far-Left drone on about how ashamed Americans should be for supporting this president, I refuse to be. This administration wasn’t just about one man — it was about thousands of people living out their conviction for us. They leave these four years exhausted, but they should also leave them proud. Because regardless of how the chapter ended, the story of what they achieved matters. Tags: Tony Perkins, Donald Trump, a Personnel BestTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. 48.) NBC MORNING RUNDOWN
Friday, January 22, 2021
Good morning, NBC News readers.
As the U.S. continues to struggle with Covid-19, President Joe Biden will sign two more executive orders to tackle the economic fallout from the pandemic.
Here is what we’re watching this Friday morning.
Have we reached peak Covid-19? Variants muddy forecasts for coming months Hospitalizations for Covid-19 in the United States are falling after having hit record levels this month — a welcome sign that the winter surge may finally be leveling off.
But as new, potentially more contagious variants of the virus circulate, coronavirus modelers warn that the U.S. is by no means out of the woods yet, NBC News’ Denise Chow reports.
The emergence of new variants isn’t altogether surprising, but experts say that without a better understanding of how these strains affect things like transmissibility and the effectiveness of existing vaccines, it’s difficult to know how the pandemic may play out.
With so much uncertainty, public health experts say the need to distribute the vaccines quickly is imperative.
But the U.S. vaccine rollout has been problematic so far, with some states running out of their supplies while others have struggled to administer all the doses they were receiving.
The slow process has led to some consternation that people may not be able to get their second dose within the prescribed time frame. But while potentially worrisome, public health experts across the country say there’s no cause for concern.
Meantime, another high-profile celebrity has tested positive. A few days after making news for photobombing a couples’ wedding picture, Dave Chappelle announced that he has tested positive for Covid-19 and is now quarantining.

Biden unveils ‘wartime’ national Covid strategy, executive orders to address economic toll coming Friday President Joe Biden plans to sign two executive orders Friday to address the economic toll of the coronavirus pandemic, including expanding food stamps and beginning the process to require that everyone working for the federal government get a minimum wage of $15 an hour.
The new moves come on the heels of the 10 executive orders Biden signed Thursday to ramp up Covid-19 vaccinations, expand testing and reopen schools as part of his aggressive plan to tackle the pandemic.
“We didn’t get into this mess overnight and it is going to take months to get it turned around,” Biden said, warning the country will likely top 500,000 deaths next month. “But let me be equally clear, we will get through this, we will defeat this pandemic.”
Meantime, public health experts offered praise for Biden’s battle plan to beat Covid, but also warned that undoing Trump-era mistakes will take time.
“The single most important thing the Biden administration needs to do to fight the pandemic is communicate honestly and openly with the American people about what needs to be done,” said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health. “The constant obfuscation and misinformation from the Trump administration, all the ‘this is a hoax’ stuff, that killed our pandemic response.”

One true love thing They say dogs are a man’s best friend. One Turkish man can attest to that truism.
When Cemal Senturk’s dog, Boncuk, saw him being taken away to a hospital in northern Turkey last week, the faithful hound was so concerned she followed the ambulance.
Despite Senturk’s family’s best efforts to bring the pooch home, she kept running back to the hospital and waited patiently outside the medical facility for several days until her master was discharged.
“She’s very used to me. And I miss her, too, constantly,” Senturk said.
He was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday and the pair are now happily reunited at home.

FIRST READ: Trump is out, but government dysfunction still remains
Donald Trump has been gone from White House for more than 48 hours, but the political dysfunction, hyper-partisanship and contentious atmosphere has remained in Washington.
Especially on Capitol Hill.
REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo
Mitch McConnell, now in the minority, has held up the organization of the 50-50 Senate (like its committees and committee assignments) – unless Democrats agree to preserve the legislative filibuster.
(Senate Democrats simply want to return to the same power-sharing agreement that existed in 2001, the last time there was a 50-50 Senate.)
Republicans are arguing that a Senate impeachment trial of Trump is unconstitutional, while Democrats are pressing forward.
And all of Washington has bickered over the meaning of Joe Biden’s call for unity. (As we wrote yesterday, Biden’s “unity” is about dialing down the temperature of our politics, not abandoning policy goals.)
The problem with today’s Senate is that it has become so obsolete to our current politics. How is a body supposed to be a cooling saucer when few of its members are cooling-saucer politicians?
What’s more, it’s become too easy – and too rewarding – to obstruct in the Senate. When is the last time a senator got punished for obstructing legislation or a nomination?
When the incentive is to obstruct – and not to work in good faith – then you’ve got an institutional problem.
|
Has McConnell overplayed his hand?
All of that said, it’s very possible that Mitch McConnell has overplayed his hand on this 50-50 power-sharing agreement.
We get what McConnell is trying to do politically: He wants to divide Senate Democrats, pitting the Joe Manchins and Kyrsten Sinemas who are in favor of keeping the legislative filibuster against the rest of the Dem caucus and their ambitious agenda.
But Joe Manchin also wants his committee chairmanship, and he’s currently backing Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in his negotiations here with McConnell.
“Chuck has the right to do what he’s doing,” Manchin said. “He has the right to use that to leverage in whatever he wants to do.”
And when you’re not winning over Joe Manchin, you’re not dividing Democrats.
Instead, you’re uniting them.

Biden’s second full day on the job
President Biden and Vice President Harris receive a briefing on the economy at 2:00 pm ET… Biden makes remarks on the economy and signs executive orders at 2:45 pm ET… And White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki holds a briefing with the press (along with National Economic Council Director Brian Deese) at 12:30 pm ET.
The two executive orders Biden plans to sign today would expand food stamps and raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour for all federal government workers, NBC’s Lauren Egan writes.

The Waiver Way
President Biden’s nominee to lead the Defense Department, retired Gen. Lloyd Austin, cleared his one major hurdle to confirmation on Thursday. The House and Senate both voted to approve a waiver for Austin to lead the department, even though he hasn’t been out of military service for the mandated seven years.
Austin’s waiver overwhelming passed the House, 326 to 78, and passed the Senate by a 69-to-27 vote. The Senate is expected to vote on the nomination at 10:30 a.m.
Discussions are still ongoing on Biden’s other nominees who haven’t received a vote yet like Tony Blinken and Janet Yellen.

No images? Click here Good morning. It’s Friday, Jan. 22, and we’re covering the first full day of the Biden administration, unemployment, and a race to save trapped miners in China. Have feedback? Let us know at hello@join1440.com. First time reading? Sign up here. NEED TO KNOWNational COVID-19 RoadmapPresident Joe Biden’s administration released its strategy to combat the coronavirus pandemic yesterday, a plan meant to facilitate a goal of reaching 100 million vaccinations by March. Much of the high-level document (read in full) is linked to a $1.9T economic stimulus package proposed by Biden that would require Congressional approval. Biden also signed 10 executive orders related to the pandemic, including requiring masks on public transportation, quarantine rules for international travelers, and a push toward real-time data collection for schools. The US has reported a total of 410,349 COVID-19 deaths as of this morning, with 3,955 reported yesterday. Almost 38 million vaccine doses have been distributed, with 17.5 million doses administered. Elsewhere in the administration, defense secretary nominee Gen. Lloyd Austin cleared a Senate subcommittee panel, setting up a vote before the full chamber. Congress granted Austin—who retired from service four years ago—a waiver to serve in the position, which typically requires nominees be at least seven years removed from service. If confirmed, Austin would become the first Black secretary of defense. Separately, Biden said he would keep Christopher Wray as head of the FBI. Biden will reportedly propose a five-year extension of the New START treaty, an agreement between the US and Russia limiting the number of strategic nuclear weapons each may possess. See background here. Finally, the administration sent a wide-ranging immigration reform proposal to Congress. The centerpiece of the bill is an eight-year pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants living in the country as of Jan. 1. It is unclear when the bill will be taken up by Congress. K-Shaped RecoveryMore than 900,000 Americans filed initial unemployment claims last week, down by 26,000 from the previous week and 25,000 less than estimates. Despite the slight week-over-week increase, the figure has not dipped below its prepandemic record of 695,000, set in 1982, since late March. Claims fell as low as 711,000 in early November before a winter surge in COVID-19 cases across the nation forced many states to reimpose various social distancing measures. Data also revealed an estimated 3 million people fell off the unemployment cliff when pandemic-related benefits lapsed in December as an economic stimulus package stalled in Congress. Separately, a poll revealed nearly one-third of small-business owners surveyed said they were unable to pay January rent. The trend is the lagging part of what analysts call a K-shaped recovery, which occurs when different parts of the economy rebound at different rates. Conversely, the stock markets, driven largely by tech giants, all closed at or near record highs yesterday. China Races to Free Miners Chinese officials said yesterday it will take at least 15 more days to reach workers trapped in the Hushan gold mine in the country’s eastern Shandong province. The crew has already been trapped 1,300 feet below the surface for more than 12 days, after a Jan. 10 explosion caused 70 tons of debris to block the mineshaft. Of the 22 workers, one died in the initial explosion, 11 have been accounted for, and the remaining 10 have not been located. Historically, China’s mining industry has been notoriously dangerous, averaging 5,000 deaths per year in the mid-2000s. The country launched an overhaul of its coal-mining procedures last year after two high-profile incidents near the city of Chongqing left almost 40 workers dead. Seven of the world’s 10 deepest mines produce gold—go inside the world’s deepest, South Africa’s Mponeng gold mine (w/video).
