THE DAILY SIGNAL

September 7 2020

Happy Labor Day from Washington, where President Trump continues to offer assistance from federal law enforcement to cities that want to stop violence in the streets. A black Marine veteran who lives near the ongoing riots in Portland, Oregon, tells our Virginia Allen about the disturbing events he has witnessed while supporting local police. Plus: what pro athletes dismiss in alleging widespread police brutality; the NBA’s acceptance of China’s human rights abuses; photos of America’s tumultuous summer; and the fall of a Christian leader. On this date in 1968, in the first such demonstration, women demanding “women’s liberation” protest the 41st annual Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

AXIOS

Axios AM

By Mike Allen

Mike Allen

🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day! Thanks for the company this summer. Our vacation and leisure rituals, some going back to childhood, were all upended as we navigated on the fly. People who are big planners (definitely not me) suddenly got more spontaneous.

  • I hope this hard reset, amid all the tragedy, has spurred some new and healthy routines for you and yours — and a keener appreciation for what matters.
1 big thing: At Labor Day, new stress for workers
Featured image

Illustration: Aïda Amer/Axios

The collision of three unprecedented events — the pandemic, its economic toll and an uprising against racial injustice — is causing extraordinary angst among workers, Joann Muller and Courtenay Brown write.

  • Why it matters: High anxiety levels are touching employees in nearly every industry, and labor unrest could be bubbling beneath the surface.
  • 43% of Americans in last week’s Axios-Ipsos coronavirus survey reported that they were concerned about their job security. 44% said they were worried about their ability to pay their bills.

The big picture: There’s been a tremendous downward shift in worker power in record time.

  • This time last year, the unemployment rate was near a 50-year low. Jobs were plentiful and corporations were bending over backwards to get employees to work for them.

The unemployed are unsure if their jobs will ever come back. The $600 boost in unemployment benefits shoring up their finances has expired — and is unlikely to return.

  • Some workers furloughed at the onset of the pandemic are still in purgatory, but signs are cropping up that job losses may become permanent.
  • At the end of August, MGM Resorts laid off 18,000 workers who had been furloughed in March.

Those who do have jobs wonder how much longer they’ll have a paycheck.

  • Airline workers got a six-month reprieve from job cuts under the federal CARES Act, but travel demand remains low and isn’t expected to return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024.
  • Without more federal aid, tens of thousands of employees will be furloughed Oct. 1.
  • “Keeping people in this state of uncertainty is a certain kind of cruelty all in itself,” Sara Nelson, president of the flight attendants union, told Axios.

Some workers face a previously unfathomable tradeoff: quit their job or keep it, but at the risk of potentially contracting the virus.

  • “I hear a lot of trepidation, a lot of fear, a lot of anxiety,” Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, told Axios. “There are no good choices right now.”

2. 🚨 Trump faces surprising cash crunch
Featured image

President Trump’s campaign faces money concerns — an unusual predicament for a sitting president, and one that worries veteran Republican operatives, with Trump behind in top swing states as the race climaxes.

  • Why it matters: The campaign’s view is that Trump will get his message out, and he depends less on paid media than normal politicians. But the number of states Trump has to worry about has grown, and Joe Biden’s massive August fundraising haul has given his campaign a lift as early voting begins.

The New York Times leads today’s paper with a Labor Day scene-setter (subscription), reporting that Trump “appears to be facing a significant financial crunch,” and that light TV spending in some key states has “mystified allies”:

  • Trump “is expected to increase television spending next week, but several Republicans said that Bill Stepien, Mr. Trump’s campaign manager since July, was taking a cautious approach after the former leadership spent huge sums on television and digital ads earlier this year, to no discernible effect.”
  • Stepien told The Times “that a surgical approach to television ads was the right move for now, focusing on states where early and absentee voting are starting.”

The context: Biden and DNC raised a stunning $365 million in August, breaking the record for one month of presidential fundraising.

  • At the end of July, before the announcement of Sen. Kamala Harris swelled Biden’s fundraising, Trump reported slightly more cash on hand.
3. Russia exploits racial reckoning
In Portland on Saturday, a protester’s feet caught fire after a Molotov cocktail exploded on him. Photo: Nathan Howard/Getty Images

Russia is exploiting America’s divide over racism and policing as part of sowing social chaos ahead of the election, AP’s Mary Clare Jalonick writes.

  • “Cop Injustice in Kenosha” is the headline on a video posted by an online news organization with ties to Russia.
  • A video from the Kremlin-backed outlet Redfish shows Trump supporters driving aggressively through protesters in Portland.

Why it matters: The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded after 2016 that “no single group of Americans was targeted by [Russia’s Internet Research Agency] information operatives more than African-Americans.”

Jacob Blake, 29, paralyzed from the waist down after being shot in the back seven times by a Kenosha police officer, released a video message from his hospital bed, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

I just want to say, man, to all the young cats out there, and even the older ones — older than me: There’s a lot more life to live out here, man. Your life [snaps fingers], and not only just your life, your legs — something that you need to move around and move forward in life — can be taken from you like this, man. [Snaps. ]

And I promise you, the type of [stuff] that you’ll go through … I got staples in my back, staples in my damn stomach — you do not want to have to deal with this [stuff], man.

24 hours — every 24 hours, it’s pain. … It hurts to breathe, it hurts to sleep, it hurts to move from side to side, it hurts to eat. Please, I’m telling you: Change y’all lives out there. We can stick together, make some money, make everything easier for our people out here, man, because there’s so much time that has been wasted.

See the video.

6. Peloton boom
Featured image

Photo: Scott Heins/Getty Images

Enjoying a boom with so many gyms closed, Peloton “is preparing to launch a cheaper treadmill and a new high-end bike,” Bloomberg reports.

  • “The new treadmill, called Tread, will cost less than $3,000, compared with $4,295 for the current model.”
  • “The new stationary bike will be a premium offering called Bike+, and will likely cost more than the current $2,245 version. Peloton will then drop the price of the existing machine to less than $1,900.”
7. ⚾ Dept. of Hoopla: Roger Angell @ 100

The New Yorker’s Roger Angell, one of the most renowned baseball writers ever, turns 100 on Sept. 19. In “The Talk of the Town” in the new issue, Mark Singer visits Maine for an early birthday party for the legend, “born five years before the founding of this magazine, and a contributor for the past seventy-six”:

Although Angell spent five-plus decades as a fiction editor and is best known for his matchless œuvre of baseball writing, … his most widely read essay for the magazine was “This Old Man,” a ninety-three-year-old’s unflinchingly intimate account of what one discovers, savors, bears, rues, and forgives in the late chapters of a very long-lived life.

Maine Gov. Janet Mills joins the party to proclaim “Roger Angell Day”: “He writes about winning and he writes about the pain of loss and regaining life again.”

DAYWATCH

Good morning, Chicago. Going into Labor Day weekend, Illinois was named as one of the seven states at risk of a COVID-19 surge.
If you’re looking to safely celebrate the holiday with some good eats, here’s a list of 51 Chicago-area restaurants offering Labor Day specials for dining in or carrying out.
And has the coronavirus left you working from home for good? Or out of work? This is what you’ll need to know for next year’s tax season.
Here’s more coronavirus news and other top stories you need to know to start your day.

1

Five police shootings in Chicago in two months, but no video released on any of them. Is it taking too long for the public to see what happened?

There have been at least five people shot by on-duty Chicago cops since July, two of them fatally, yet no video has been released from any of them in a summer when shootings in other cities have brought closer scrutiny of police actions. Now some are questioning if the city’s policy to make video and other evidence available to the public within 60 days is strong enough to restore public trust.

2

From wake-up calls to wellness checks, how CPS is trying to make sure no child is left disconnected as remote learning resumes Tuesday

From exhausting phone trees and dropping off Chromebooks to calling police for wellness checks, social workers, counselors and other support staff in Chicago Public Schools have gone to great lengths to track down students who aren’t connecting with their schools during remote learning.

With a new school year starting remotely on Tuesday, school communities are redoubling their efforts, while also figuring out how to build new relationships virtually with incoming kindergartners and high school freshmen.

Chicago stores hit by looting are warily reopening. That doesn’t mean all the plywood is coming down.

While many businesses in neighborhoods affected by the civil unrest that followed George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police have reopened, not all are ready to lower their guard. Some are still working to repair the damage, especially those hit by a second round of looting and vandalism last month. Others fear the unrest isn’t over.

The Bears’ 1st 53-man roster is set. Here’s the initial breakdown — plus analysis from our writers — heading into Week 1.

The Chicago Bears set their 53-man roster Saturday as they prepare for their season opener against the Lions in Detroit on Sept. 13. In the coming days, they can continue to adjust the roster with waiver claims and free-agent signings and also will sign players to a 16-man practice squad. For now, here’s the Bears roster, a positional breakdown of how it formed Saturday and analysis from the Tribune’s Bears reporters.

With work and school remote, people are moving into Midwestern vacation homes full-time — and paying top dollar for pandemic-friendly features

As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves from crisis to chronic, the appeal of a remote, off-the-grid vacation place for getting away from it all has been replaced by homebuyers’ determination to transplant work and school to an airier locale — complete with broadband access.

Total U.S. coronavirus deaths this morning: 188,941.
Vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) will make her first campaign appearance in battleground Wisconsin at an event in Milwaukee today, while Vice President Mike Pence heads to western Wisconsin.

President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden were in Kenosha, Wis., last week, appealing to voters in a swing state the president won by less than a percentage point in 2016.

Harris will tour an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers training facility and speak with union members and Wisconsin labor leadership and then attend a campaign roundtable with Black Milwaukee business owners where she’ll focus on racial equity as a part of economic recovery.

The Associated Press: Harris makes her first campaign trip of the campaign, heading to Milwaukee today.

Jonathan Martin, The New York Times: What to watch as Harris, Pence campaign in battleground Wisconsin today.

The Hill: Biden’s campaign has increased outreach to Black voters in the battleground states “If we think about the swing states where Black voters turnout dropped off in 2016 — Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina —[Biden] needs Black turnout to increase back to or near Obama levels,” Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of left-leaning BlackPAC, told The Hill. “They certainly cannot be where they were in 2016.

Biden, with help from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, will campaign in Harrisburg, Pa., today and Michigan on Wednesday, both states that helped Trump win in the Electoral College in 2016. Trump on Tuesday will be in North Carolina, then campaign in Michigan a day after Biden’s visit (Detroit Free Press). On Friday, both candidates will be in the same place for the first time when they travel to Shanksville, Pa., to commemorate the anniversary of Sept. 11.

On Sunday during a wide-ranging CNN interview, Harris said she believes Russian interference could cost the Democratic ticket the White House, when paired with Trump’s attacks on the credibility of the voting system.

I am clear that Russia interfered in the election of president of the United States in 2016,” she said. “I serve on the Senate Intelligence Committee. We have published detailed reports about exactly what we believe happened. And I do believe that there will be foreign interference in the 2020 election, and that Russia will be at the front of the line.”

The Hill: Election officials and businesses hope to face the threat of Russian interference in the U.S. election with far more knowledge and preparation than last time.

Addressing questions about a potential coronavirus vaccine, Harris told CNN she’s skeptical about the safety of any pharmaceutical cure that administration officials say may emerge before the November elections.

“I would not trust Donald Trump. It would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever he’s talking about,” the senator said (The Washington Post).

Biden’s campaign plans to intensify its strategy in the final two months of the campaign, ramping up the argument that Trump owns the pandemic response and record high unemployment facing the nation. During the all-important post Labor Day stretch, Biden will continue appearances in a handful of key states to make his arguments, The Hill’s Amie Parnes reports. “Our message is working,” said one Biden ally close to the campaign. “We are systematically addressing the biggest problems on people’s minds. “The polls are stable because the support is real.

Politico: Harris is about to get the Trump treatment.

CNBC: The Biden campaign previews its election strategy for the fall.

The New York Times: Biden leads in the homestretch while Trump takes aim.

The New York Times: Biden’s language on China points to a drastic shift in thinking.

Democrats are bracing for potential chaos on Election Day, fearing that Trump’s unsubstantiated warnings about voter fraud and the expected influx of absentee ballots will lead to a bitter and protracted fight over the election’s results, The Hill’s Max Greenwood reports. Two events last week amplified those fears: warnings of a potential “red mirage” on Election Night, in which in-person vote tallies and mail-in ballots counted after Nov. 3 go to different candidates, and Trump’s recommendation twice last week that voters should “test” election security by trying to vote twice.

The Hill: Secretaries of state warned on Sunday that Election Day could definitely drag out this year before the next president is known.

> Debates: Trump and his campaign team are preparing for the first presidential debate Sept. 29, eyeing the one-on-one format with Biden as a prime opportunity to sway a potentially large number of voters (The Hill). … Trump began meeting with his debate team in July, and the key coaches are familiar from his 2016 campaign (Axios).  … The Trump team plots how to bust Biden in the debates (Politico).

The Hill Sunday shows upshot: Stimulus, election preparations dominate.

LEADING THE DAY
CONGRESS: Congress this week will return to Washington and begin talks to pass a short-term funding bill to keep the government running until the beginning of December, and separately, Senate Republicans will float a $500 billion coronavirus relief bill they call “targeted,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Sunday.

The Republican relief package, if it clears the Senate, is not expected to become law but will provide political cover for the White House and GOP lawmakers as months of back-and-forth talks resume with House Democrats over the size and scope of a coronavirus bill.

“The president and I believe we should do more stimulus,” Mnuchin said on “Fox News Sunday” while mentioning $1 trillion as a ceiling. “We have about 7 and a half million jobs we need to get back until we’re back to where we were, and we want to help small businesses. We want to help businesses that are particularly impacted by this, and we’ll continue to work on proposed new legislation” (The Hill).

Mnuchin (pictured below with White House chief of staff Mark Meadows) said he and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) want the short-term spending measure to be devoid of policy riders and extraneous provisions (Reuters).

But lawmakers will be sorely tempted to attach funding priorities to a must-pass measure that averts a partial government shutdown, which looms after Sept. 30 without legislative action. For example, House and Senate Republicans in states affected by Hurricane Laura are eager to add emergency disaster assistance funding to any bill headed to Trump’s desk (Insurance News Net and The Hill).

> State, local budgets: States are considering big cuts to spending on schools, vaccination programs and job-training. They are weighing tax hikes on millionaires, cigarettes and legalized marijuana, and pondering whether to borrow and draw from rainy day funds while trimming state employees’ pay. Those are all proposals under consideration to shore up distressed finances amid a sharp drop in tax revenue caused by the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic (The Associated Press).

> Defense bill: The House and Senate are expected to begin negotiations in earnest on a massive defense policy bill, which Trump has threatened to veto over a provision that would require the Pentagon to rename military bases that are named after Confederate leaders. Staffers on the House and Senate Armed Services committees have started preliminary talks following passage in July of each chamber’s version of the $740.5 billion National Defense Authorization Act. The Hill reports five issues to watch.

MORE 2020 POLITICS: Recapping new polls this morning, Wisconsin likely voters favor Biden by 6 points in a CBS News-YouGov survey released on Sunday (The Hill). … Trump now leads Biden in Texas by 2 points — a toss-up contest as Biden’s slender lead evaporates in the Lone Star State among likely voters, according to a poll from The Dallas Morning News and University of Texas at Tyler (The Hill). … Nationally, Biden leads Trump by 10 points, according to the same CBS News-YouGov poll (The Hill). … On foreign policy, Americans support U.S. engagement in the world but in practice, they worry other countries take advantage of the United States, according to a detailed analysis of current public opinion surveys by journalist Bruce Stokes, an associate fellow with Chatham House.

> Trump’s base is shrinking: That’s a key finding of an analysis of how the U.S. electorate has changed since 2016, based on census data analyzed by the Brookings Institution and NPR HERE. Nationally, the president’s base has gone from 45 percent of eligible voters to 41 percent.

> Data disputes: With political aims, some leading Republicans would rather downplay the steep U.S. death toll from the coronavirus before Election Day. Although many public health experts believe the number of U.S. fatalities from COVID-19 is likely higher than reported by public health departments around the country, some conservatives discount the statistics, arguing the nation’s death toll is smaller than the nearly 189,000 people killed by the coronavirus to date. Trump and two GOP Senate candidates in tough races, incumbent Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Rep. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), who is a physician, tout a widely-debunked falsehood that fewer than 10,000 people have died from the virus in the United States. Meanwhile, fatalities attributed to the coronavirus hover around 1,000 per day (The Hill). Facebook recently removed a post by Marshall about COVID-19 death data because it was false (The Wichita Eagle).

> Congress & elections: Feeling more confident about taking back the Senate in November, Democratic lawmakers are haggling over a potential Biden agenda for 2021. Some push immigration reform, while others favor gun control and climate change (The Hill). … Trump looms large over campaigns for control of Congress (The Associated Press).

> Jacob Blake speaks: On Saturday, lawyers for the 29-year-old Black man shot by police in Kenosha, Wis., on Aug. 23 released a video message recorded from his hospital room. “Please, I’m telling you, change your lives out there,” Blake told well-wishers. He described his physical condition and pain after police bullets left him paralyzed when he was shot seven times in the back. The case, which sparked public outrage and demonstrations, is under federal investigation (CBS News).

> Early voting: Registered Democrats are outpacing Republicans in requests for mail-in ballots as key battleground states see a significant increase in requests. Early voting began Friday in the presidential election, with North Carolina becoming the first state to send out absentee ballots (NBC News).

IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKES
CORONAVIRUS: Public health experts shudder during the pandemic when revelers let loose over three-day weekends. They expect the Labor Day holiday to be followed by new coronavirus outbreaks in the United States — if Memorial Day weekend and the Fourth of July are guides (The New York Times). In terms of daily case counts, the United States was in worse shape going into this holiday weekend than it was for Memorial Day. The nation now averages about 40,000 new confirmed cases per day, up from about 22,000 per day ahead of the end-of-May holiday weekend (The New York Times).

> Global worries: India has overtaken Brazil as the nation behind the United States with the second highest number of coronavirus cases in the world. India has reported at least 4.2 million cases and the virus continues to roar through major cities with no peak or relief in sight (Reuters).

> U.S. spreadScott Gottlieb, former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), told CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday that about 20 percent of the U.S. population could be “exposed” to the coronavirus by the end of the year, causing its spread to slow after considerable “death and disease along the way.” (To date, there have been 6.2 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection in the United States, a nation of 330 million people).

“The reality is that if we continue to see spread at the rate that we’re seeing it now — or something higher than what we’re seeing — by the end of the year, upwards of 20 percent of the population in the U.S. could have been exposed to this coronavirus,” Gottlieb said. “And we’re likely to see the virus itself start to slow down just because of the natural progression of the epidemic and the fact that we’re heading out of the winter into the spring and the summertime as we enter 2021. This could run its course in 2020, and as we get into 2021, start to slow down.”

Fatalities in the United States from the virus by Jan. 1 could exceed 410,000, according to a disease model by the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. The model takes into account evolving human behavior around the country, such as mask-wearing (CNN).

> Vaccine drama: Public fears that the FDA will bow to political pressure and clear a COVID-19 vaccine before it’s ready are rising. The president’s interference in public health matters has undercut faith in the U.S. vaccine approval system (The Hill). … For that reason, pharmaceutical companies competing in the race to develop effective vaccines against COVID-19 are expected this week to unveil a voluntary joint pledge about vaccine safety. It’s an unprecedented effort to reassure the public that the companies will not seek a premature approval of vaccines under pressure from the administration (The New York Times). … International intelligence missions to obtain vaccine research are intensifying as China and Russia expand their espionage efforts to steal work conducted by the United States at both research institutes and companies (The New York Times).

> Campus contagions: Where college and university students are congregating as campuses welcome students for the semester, COVID-19 follows. College towns are the newest front in the battle against the coronavirus, with cases of infection spiking around campuses from Texas to Iowa to North Carolina (The New York Times). … For example, within days of the University of Iowa’s reopening, students were complaining that they couldn’t get coronavirus tests or were bumping into people who were supposed to be in isolation. Undergraduates jammed sidewalks and downtown bars, masks hanging below their chins. Now, Iowa City is a full-blown pandemic hot spot — one of about 100 college communities around the United States where infections have spiked in recent weeks. Although the rate of infection has bent downward in the Northeast, it remains high across many states in the Midwest and South — and evidence suggests that students returning to big campuses are a major factor (The New York Times). … Northeastern University in Boston dismissed 11 students who recently gathered in a hotel room being used as dorm space because they violated the school’s COVID-19 policies. The university will not refund their tuition, marking one of the most severe punishments college students have faced for breaking pandemic rules. Experts frown on tossing college students out of school for pandemic violations because it does not solve the No. 1 challenge: “Using a punitive approach doesn’t address the problem, which is that students have unmet needs for social contacts. That’s not going to go away if you throw students off campus,” said Julia Marcus, a Harvard Medical School epidemiologist (The Washington Post).

The New York Times opinion by writer Krista Diamond: The strange grief of losing my sense of taste after COVID-19 infection. “The ability to taste was my connection to life before the coronavirus. And suddenly it was — and still is — gone.”

Economy: The U.S. recovery is slowing, even as the unemployment rate fell to 8.4 percent in August, economists believe. More job cuts are ahead (NBC News). … Nearly two-thirds of restaurants in New York City may be out of business by January without some sort of government help, according to a new study (CNN). … Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said during an NPR interview on Friday that recovery in the United States will take “years.” … The Hill’s Naomi Jagoda reports on five things to watch when it comes to payroll tax cuts ordered by Trump. One big idea: Few businesses are likely to participate. … The pandemic and Americans’ instinct to conserve cash have damaged the bottom line for charities that are trying to increase their fundraising to meet needs (The HIll).

Lobbying for U.S. consumption: This year, the Consumer Brand Association found that some of its member companies, including Lysol and Clorox, unexpectedly rocketed to public attention as the coronavirus pandemic reached the United States. Bryan Zumwalt, the association’s executive vice president of public affairs, describes a tumultuous period for U.S. consumers and major corporate brands as well as his own association, which rebranded last year from the former Grocery Manufacturers Association (The Hill).

➔ Courts: U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, Calif., issued a temporary restraining order late Saturday against the Census Bureau and the Commerce Department halting a plan that would wind down by the end of September the government’s ongoing process of counting the population. The Commerce Department, which oversees the census process, is ordered to freeze its fast-track schedule until a court hearing takes place on Sept. 17. The concerns raised relate to potential undercounts of the population because of an abbreviated census schedule. The census, which takes place every 10 years, results in federal decisions about congressional district representation known as apportionment as well as the allocation of $1.5 trillion in federal funds to state and local governments. Koh’s temporary restraining order was requested by a coalition of cities, counties and civil rights groups that had sued the Census Bureau, demanding it restore its previous plan for finishing the census at the end of October (The Associated Press).

THE CLOSER
And finally … Labor Day offbeat news, since readers with good sense are doing other things on this holiday and may have missed a few headlines:

  • The mayor of Danbury, Conn., has accepted comedian John Oliver’s offer of $55,000 for Danbury charities in exchange for the city’s renaming of the local sewage plant in honor of the late-night funnyman. Mayor Mark Boughton (R) set one hurdle on Sunday as he milked a long-running schtick with Oliver that has nothing to do with anything except kooky entertainment. “We do have one very specific condition. You must come here to Danbury and be physically present when we cut the ribbon,” Boughton said in a Facebook video.

  • “Trumptilla” boat parades, during which the president’s supporters display flags, banners and maximum MAGA enthusiasm, are all the rage in various bodies of USA water during the three-day holiday (Alabama.com). Trumptilla in Palm Beach, Fla., today at 11 a.m. boasts the participation of Donald Trump Jr. (The Palm Beach Post). A Saturday Trumptilla on Lake Travis in Texas resulted in at least four sunken boats and lots of water rescues (The New York Times).

  • In central Japan, a sushi chef overcame sluggish demand for platters of his delicacies by creating a “Delivery Macho” service during the pandemic. He now uses shirtless, out-of-work bodybuilders to make sushi home deliveries. Currently a sensation on Twitter, the chef is reeling in 10 orders a day at a minimum charge of $66 per order (Reuters).

POLITICO PLAYBOOK

POLITICO Playbook: Dueling veeps in Wisconsin

Presented by

DRIVING THE DAY

TODAY … DUELING VEEPS ON THE TRAIL — Both VP MIKE PENCE and his would-be successor, Sen. KAMALA HARRIS (D-Calif.), are visiting Wisconsin, and their schedules are pretty revealing about how each political team sees the state.

HARRIS IS TOURING an International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers training facility and meeting with labor leaders, then speaking with Black business owners in Milwaukee. PENCE is due to deliver remarks on the topic of “A Stronger American Workforce” at Dairyland Power Cooperative, an electric utility in La Crosse, a city of 50,000 along the Mississippi River.

WISCONSIN, FAMOUSLY, was the state HILLARY CLINTON neglected in 2016. She lost the state by fewer than 28,000 votes, but she did win La Crosse County by more than 9 percentage points — while badly underperforming elsewhere in the surrounding southwest corner of the state, stunning Democrats. In the 2018 midterms, Dems won back some of those areas, which helps explain why PENCE is visiting La Crosse.

IT’S EASY TO FORGET, but the Democratic ticket won Wisconsin by 14 points in 2008, then by 7 points in 2012. As of now, polling averages put JOE BIDEN ahead of President DONALD TRUMP in the state by about 7, but that could easily change. In 2016, TRUMP was able to excite rural white voters enough to overwhelm Democrats’ advantage in urban areas like Madison and Milwaukee, where turnout tanked. So the task for BIDEN and HARRIS in Wisconsin is a microcosm of their challenge nationwide: boost their margins in the cities, make new inroads in the suburbs, and hold down their losses everywhere else. More on this Badgerland duel from NYT’s Jonathan Martin

BIDEN is in Harrisburg, Pa., where he’ll “join a virtual event from the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO headquarters to speak with AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, take questions from union members, and recognize America’s working families on Labor Day,” according to a campaign release.

THE PRESIDENT has no events on his public schedule.

A CHINK IN BIDEN’S SUBURBAN ARMOR? … DAVID SIDERS: “In swing state suburbs, local party officials are meeting the Labor Day start of the fall campaign with an undercurrent of uneasiness about how quickly Trump shifted the focus of the campaign to public safety — and away from the more damaging discussion of his erratic response to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Interviews with more than two dozen Democratic Party officials and strategists in the suburbs reflect confidence in Biden’s ability to compete with Trump on issues surrounding this summer’s civil unrest, but also widespread concerns about the political volatility — and potential allure — of the president’s law-and-order message. …

“Two Democratic strategists who recently viewed focus groups of suburban voters described high-propensity voters increasingly concerned about unrest in urban centers, though both strategists said it was unclear whether that concern would push them to Biden or to Trump.

“One of the strategists described a focus group in which white, college-educated women reacted to the protests by discussing their own property values and, in one woman’s case, her family’s mortgage. ‘White women who have college degrees are starting to really get sick of this,’ the strategist said.” POLITICO

Good Monday morning. Jake and Anna will be back Tuesday.

CALIFORNIA BROILING … L.A. TIMES: “As a historic heat wave left Southern California broiling, Woodland Hills on Sunday recorded an all-time high of 121 degrees, which the National Weather Service said was the hottest temperature recorded at an official weather station in Los Angeles County. …

“The California Independent System Operator, which runs the electric grid for much of the state, declared a Stage 2 Emergency on Saturday night and warned it could order utilities to institute rotating power outages.

“But shortly after 9 p.m., the body announced the emergency had been lifted with no outages necessary, crediting consumer energy conservation. Still, the ISO said that rolling blackouts could be necessary Sunday, most likely between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. The body was forecasting peak demand to outpace supply by about 4,000 megawatts. That could force utilities to cut off power to 2.5 to 3 million customers statewide, Eric Schmidt, vice president of operations for California ISO, said Sunday in a press briefing.” LAT

— @CALFIREBDU: “CAL FIRE Law Enforcement has determined the El Dorado Fire, burning near Oak Glen in San Bernardino County, was caused by a smoke generating pyrotechnic device, used during a gender reveal party.”

JOE DUNFORD SPEAKS … KIND OF: “Last year, he was the country’s top military officer. Now, he is retired on the South Shore,” by The Boston Globe’s Brian MacQuarrie: “During a lengthy interview at his home, whose location he requested the Globe not identify for privacy purposes, [former Joint Chiefs Chair Joe] Dunford spoke in detail about the challenges facing the military, the U.S. role in a changing geopolitical landscape, and the growing military threat posed by China and Russia.

“But Dunford did not wish to discuss his personal or professional feelings about President Trump, whom he advised during much of his tenure as Joint Chiefs chairman from 2015 to 2019. He also declined to comment on Trump’s reported disparagement of slain U.S. service members as ‘losers’ and ‘suckers,’ characterizations the president has denied making.

“Dunford said his philosophy is to ‘behave in public the same way I did while on active duty. … I feel I should not engage in any partisan politics.’ The implications of any public comment on the president and his administration, he said, could complicate the job of Army General Mark Milley, his successor as Joint Chiefs chair and another Massachusetts native.

“‘I’ve got to let the chairman be the chairman, and there can be only one chairman,’ Dunford said.” Globe

CRACKDOWN — “FBI Sweep of China Researchers Leads to Cat-and-Mouse Tactics,” by WSJ’s Kate O’Keeffe and Aruna Viswanatha: “FBI agents have questioned dozens of researchers this summer about their work and military affiliations. In recent weeks, the widening operation has triggered efforts by some suspects to evade authorities and led to the arrest of at least two researchers whose work is allegedly tied to China’s military development, according to court filings by prosecutors.

“In one case, a researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles studying artificial intelligence is accused by federal prosecutors of destroying evidence sought by the FBI in an investigation into potential technology theft. The researcher, Guan Lei, threw a damaged computer hard drive in a dumpster days after he was stopped from leaving the U.S. at Los Angeles International Airport, prosecutors allege.” WSJ

CORONAVIRUS RAGING … JOANNE KENEN: “The United States has a narrow window to force the coronavirus into a partial retreat before the one-two punch of school openings and colder weather brings a widely feared rebound. It’s blowing it, again.” POLITICO

WSJ: “Mexico is running out of death certificates due to the high death toll brought by the coronavirus pandemic and federal bureaucratic snafus, authorities say, delaying burials.”

MEGAN CASSELLA: “As rich Americans get richer, the bottom half struggles”: “The path toward economic recovery in the U.S. has become sharply divided, with wealthier Americans earning and saving at record levels while the poorest struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table.

“The result is a splintered economic picture characterized by high highs — the stock market has hit record levels — and incongruous low lows: Nearly 30 million Americans are receiving unemployment benefits, and the jobless rate stands at 8.4 percent. And that dichotomy, economists fear, could obscure the need for an additional economic stimulus that most say is sorely needed.” POLITICO

HERE’S SOMETHING ELSE TO WORRY ABOUT — “In Year of Voting by Mail, a Scramble to Beef Up In-Person Voting, Too,” by NYT’s Nick Corasaniti and Michael Wines: “Against the backdrop of Mr. Trump’s relentless criticism of voting by mail, the breakdowns at the Postal Service and the relatively high rate of rejections of mailed-in ballots, election officials and activists in both parties are amping up efforts to hire and train poll workers; integrate stadiums, arenas and malls into their voting options; and come up with contingency plans if there’s a surge in coronavirus cases in the fall.

“A major area of concern is finding younger people who are able to replace older ones most susceptible to the ravages of Covid-19 at a time when 58 percent of the nation’s poll workers are 61 or older.

“‘Everyone’s focusing on the rate of voting by mail, which is going to easily double what it was in 2016 — somewhere north of 80 million ballots,’ said Paul Gronke, an expert on in-person voting at Reed College in Portland, Ore. ‘But people aren’t paying attention to what might happen if there’s a spike in the pandemic or a shortage of poll workers and there’s a last-minute reduction in in-person voting.’

“‘In some of our minds, the nightmare scenario isn’t about voting by mail,’ he said. ‘It’s a meltdown at the polling places.’” NYT

PLAYBOOK READS

DEEP DIVE — “Joe Biden’s China Journey,” by Edward Wong, Michael Crowley and Ana Swanson for the NYT’s “The Long Run” series: “Mr. Biden’s 20-year road from wary optimism to condemnation — while still straining for some cooperation — is emblematic of the arc of U.S.-China relations, which have deteriorated to an unstable, potentially explosive state. But as Mr. Trump denounces the Washington establishment’s failures on China, Mr. Biden, an avatar of that establishment, is not recanting his past enthusiasm for engagement.” NYT

— WHITE HOUSE AIDE @PeterNavarro45, tweeting this political hot take from his official account: “NYT panda hug of Beijing Joe Biden. Not a SINGLE mention of HUNTER Biden is the tell in this con game. As soft as this puff piece is, it still EXPOSES Biden as a pawn in Xi Jinping’s Great Global Game. Read it and weep. C’mon Man…”

THEY’RE STILL MARCHING IN MINSK … AP: “100,000 march in Minsk to demand Belarus leader resigns”

ACROSS THE POND — “Sir Kim Darroch: how Donald Trump and Boris Johnson led our man in Washington to quit,” by The Times’ Charlotte Edwardes: “He’s spent it penning a book about his final five days in the Foreign Office, writing in a tearing fury about the ‘monster’ experience, ‘The worst of my life. Like being trapped in a nightmare.’ … He draws similarities between Boris Johnson and Donald Trump, using the same words to describe their appeal: ‘charm’; ‘charisma’; ‘stardust’.

“What about the so-called special relationship? He pulls a face. ‘President Macron [of France] made a big bid to be Trump’s main man in Europe,’ he says. ‘I think that’s all gone sour.’ So who? ‘I’m not sure Trump feels he needs a single close friendship in Europe. There’s no evidence that’s important to him.’

“He pauses. ‘But I do think that if Trump wins the election, then he would hope that it would develop with Boris. I think he sees Boris as a sort of kindred spirit. How Boris sees him is another question.’” The Times … With an excerpt from ‘Collateral Damage: Britain, America, and Europe in the Age of Trump’

BIG IN BELFAST … FT: “U.K. plan to undermine withdrawal treaty puts Brexit talks at risk,” by Peter Foster in Brighton, Sebastian Payne in London and Jim Brunsden in Brussels: “The UK is planning new legislation that will override key parts of the Brexit withdrawal agreement, risking the collapse of trade negotiations with Brussels.

“Sections of the internal market bill — due to be published this Wednesday — are expected to ‘eliminate the legal force of parts of the withdrawal agreement’ in areas including state aid and Northern Ireland customs, according to three people familiar with the plans.

“The move would ‘clearly and consciously’ undermine the agreement on Northern Ireland that Boris Johnson signed last October to avoid a return to a hard border in the region, one person with knowledge of the plans said.” FT

ANOTHER MICHAEL COHEN BOOK NUGGET, FWIW: “In his book, Mr. Cohen says Mr. Trump personally approved the payment to [Stormy] Daniels in 2016, saying $130,000 ‘is a lot less than I would have to pay Melania.’ Mr. Cohen also recounts Mr. Trump musing that, if it got out, his supporters might ‘think it’s cool that I slept with a porn star.’” (via WSJ’s Rebecca Davis O’Brien and Rebecca Ballhaus)

WELL, THIS IS DIFFERENT — “Julian Assange’s fiancée, Stella Moris, on their secret family,” by The Times’ Kirsty Lang: “We meet in a park so her sons have somewhere to run around. Given that it’s not easy to conduct an interview with kids in tow, she’s accompanied by her brother’s wife, who is clearly close to her nephews, providing regular snacks and apple juice with an easy familiarity. The children appear happy and are well behaved. Gabriel proudly shows me the dinosaurs on his shirt. Max, who has his mother’s big brown eyes, is more contemplative and loves picture books, including the ones with Australian animals that were sent by Assange’s mother.

“The timing of this interview is linked to Assange’s extradition battle. The hearing is due to open at the Old Bailey this week (although given the chaotic state of the British legal system during Covid-19, a last-minute delay is highly possible).

“Jennifer Robinson, Assange’s lawyer, says Moris has gone ‘to extraordinary lengths to protect her privacy and that of her children, the fact she is coming forward now and talking in public is a big decision for her.’ Assange’s legal team are keen to show that he has a young family who would be deprived of a father if he is sent to prison in America. He won’t be able to phone Moris and the children every day as he does now, and they won’t be able to visit him.”

ICYMI — “Louis DeJoy’s rise as GOP fundraiser was powered by contributions from company workers who were later reimbursed, former employees say,” by WaPo’s Aaron Davis, Amy Gardner and Jon Swaine: “Louis DeJoy’s prolific campaign fundraising, which helped position him as a top Republican power broker in North Carolina and ultimately as head of the U.S. Postal Service, was bolstered for more than a decade by a practice that left many employees feeling pressured to make political contributions to GOP candidates — money DeJoy later reimbursed through bonuses, former employees say.

“Five people who worked for DeJoy’s former business, New Breed Logistics, say they were urged by DeJoy’s aides or by the chief executive himself to write checks and attend fundraisers at his 15,000-square-foot gated mansion beside a Greensboro, N.C., country club. There, events for Republicans running for the White House and Congress routinely fetched $100,000 or more apiece.

“Two other employees familiar with New Breed’s financial and payroll systems said DeJoy would instruct that bonus payments to staffers be boosted to help defray the cost of their contributions, an arrangement that would be unlawful.” WaPo

— North Carolina A.G. Josh Stein, on Twitter: “It is against the law to directly or indirectly reimburse someone for a political contribution. Any credible allegations of such actions merit investigation by the appropriate state and federal authorities. Beyond this, it would be inappropriate for me as Attorney General to comment on any specific matter at this time.”

The Left’s Real-Time Attempt to Rewrite US History

Marxist-Progressives do this in a sort of perpetual motion. They never stop. The Morning Briefing: We’re Open for Labor Day and the Rioters Are Still Morons

AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez
Lit Labor Day

Happy Labor Day, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends who are still operating on normal calendars.

We’re going to do a quick holiday version today. A briefer Briefing, if you will.

The mostly peaceful window-smashing, fire starting protest rioters in the once-American city of Portland, OR decided that 100 consecutive nights of rioting was a milestone deserving of a celebration.

These people really need hobbies.

Imagine being so depraved that civil unrest becomes a cause for celebration in your life. Portland has become Baghdad on the Columbia in the past few months, a real American tragedy. These weakling soy boys who never got a kind word from their daddies think that’s a good thing.

I keep wondering what the long term plan for the rioters is. I mean, they can’t just riot forever. They no doubt believe that they can but they don’t seem to be reality-based. At some point they are going to have to begin participating in society again and the tantrums are going to have to stop.

Maybe — as many suspect — they’re all trust fund kids who can afford to do this for a while. Heaven help us if we’re facing a long-running plague of well-to-do white liberals who want to let everyone know that they are down with the struggle.

I want to feel worse about Portland because it once was a place that I truly enjoyed visiting. The people running it have been facilitating all of the violence, however, so the voters who put them in power deserve all that they are getting.

Victoria had the feel-good story of the weekend about the antifa idiot who tried to “celebrate” with a Molotov cocktail and set his feet on fire. Her post features a lot of great reactions mocking this idiot but this one set to the Footloose theme song was the best:

POTUS retweeted another of the Footloose takes the next day.

Again, the nightly scenes from Portland are probably the most effective Trump-Pence 2020 ads possible. Let these paste-eaters keep destroying this God-forsaken commie hellhole and themselves along the way. You know it’s awful there because the MSM has been working overtime to convince us otherwise. One of the safest bets these days is to assume that the opposite of what MSM hacks are saying is true.

Now I’ve got to get to the tequila-infused watermelon I have waiting in the fridge.

Just Binged This, It’s Fantastic

Food Lion sides with America, Detroit federal judge sides with Antifa

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 05:03 AM PDT

Food Lion, the North Carolina-based grocery chain, stepped into a pile of anti-Americanism when they decided to prevent an Air Force veteran from wearing face mask with the American flag on it. They quickly reversed their decision after a strong backlash from patriots. According to The Blaze:

North Carolina-based grocery chain Food Lion will now permit its employees to wear American flag-themed face masks while working at its stores. The company went viral earlier this week after one of its employees revealed he quit after being told to avoid wearing his American flag-themed mask.

According to a recent report from WCTI-TV, the move appears to be in response to the employee — as well as his supporters — demanding such masks after the company initially prohibited them.

Saturday saw the company’s Twitter page share a status on the development, writing, “We listened to our associates and customers about our uniform policy. We require that associates wear masks without writing, insignia, or symbols. We will allow associates to wear masks with the American flag that meet this standard.”

The company also promised that it “deeply respects the American flag.”

Meanwhile, a federal judge serving Detroit went in the wrong direction by telling law enforcement officers they were not allowed to properly do their job against violent rioters in the protest-heavy city. According to Breitbart:

A federal judge in Detroit has ordered the city’s police not to use batons, tear gas, shields, chokeholds, rubber bullets, sound cannons, or any other type of non-lethal force against protesters for the next two weeks.

The late Friday ruling granted a temporary restraining order to the activist group Detroit Will Breathe, which sued the city on Monday, claiming that excessive police force infringed upon their protesters’ First Amendment rights, the Detroit Free Press reported.

U.S. District Court Judge Laurie Michelson’s order stops police from using any type of force during protests without “probable cause.”

“For a short period, we know that the police will not be able to use the brutal tactics they have in the past against peaceful protesters without violating a court order,” said Jack Schulz, who filed the order on behalf of the group.

But Detroit Police Chief James Craig said the police have not used force against peaceful protesters.

“We’re going to continue to do our jobs the way we’ve done it,” he said. “We respect peaceful protesters. We understand the judge’s order and we’ll make sure the protesters understand if there’s any aggression or violation of law, they will get ample notice like we’ve done in the past.”

In the latest episode of Non-Compliant America, JD and Tammy dive into the conflicting decisions to demonstrate why we need to use our voices and actions to strike back against those who want to suppress us.

Employees should be allowed to express their patriotism just as law enforcement should be allowed to do their job properly. We need more Americans to be non-compliant with draconian dictates in both public and private life.

COVID-19 may take down an independent news outlet

Nobody said running a media site would be easy. We could use some help keeping this site afloat.

Colleagues have called me the worst fundraiser ever. My skills are squarely rooted on the journalistic side of running a news outlet. Paying the bills has never been my forte, but we’ve survived. We have ads on the site that help, but since the site’s inception this has been a labor of love that otherwise doesn’t bring in the level of revenue necessary to justify it.

When I left a nice, corporate career in 2017, I did so knowing I wouldn’t make nearly as much money. But what we do at NOQ Report to deliver the truth and fight the progressive mainstream media narrative that has plagued this nation is too important for me to sacrifice it for the sake of wealth. We know we’ll never make a ton of money this way, and we’re okay with that.

Things have become harder with the coronavirus lockdowns. Both ad money and donations that have kept us afloat for a while have dropped dramatically. We thought we could weather the storm, but the so-called “surge” or “2nd-wave” that mainstream media and Democrats are pushing has put our prospects in jeopardy. In short, we are now in desperate need of financial assistance.

The best way NOQ Report readers can help is to donate. Our Giving Fuel page makes it easy to donate one-time or monthly. Alternatively, you can donate through PayPal as well. We need approximately $11,500 to stay afloat for the rest of 2020, but more would be wonderful and any amount that brings us closer to our goal is greatly appreciated.

The second way to help is to become a partner. We’ve strongly considered seeking angel investors in the past but because we were paying the bills, it didn’t seem necessary. Now, we’re struggling to pay the bills. This shouldn’t be the case as our traffic the last year has been going up dramatically. June, 2018, we had 11,678 visitors. A year later in June, 2019, we were up to 116,194. In June, 2020, we had 614,192. We’re heading in the right direction and we believe we’re ready talk to patriotic investors who want to not only “get in on the action” but more importantly who want to help America hear the truth. Interested investors should contact me directly with the contact button above.

Election year or not, coronavirus lockdowns or not, anarchic riots or not, the need for truthful journalism endures. But in these times, we need as many conservative media voices as possible. Please help keep NOQ Report going.

Replay: MMA’s Bobby Green reminds us why all lives matter

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:15 AM PDT

At a time in our history where racial division is at its highest point in decades, we are seeing cognitive dissonance and Cultural Marxism collide. No better example of this is how we’re told that the phrase “all lives matter” is racist but “black lives matter” is not. This makes no sense at all to anyone who does not buy into the mental gymnastics BLM activists use in their arguments.

MMA fighter Bobby Green gave a stark example of why all lives matter in June during a post-bout interview in June. He brought into view his Caucasian adoptive father who had stood by him and helped him achieve success.

This. This is every interracial family in America. Every friendship across color lines. Every employer who hired an employee who she respects even with opposite politics.

Stop telling us how much our parents & brothers and co-workers hate us.
It’s untrue:pic.twitter.com/qk7fCWetXN

— Eric Weinstein (@EricRWeinstein) September 6, 2020

“We’re here, we love each other. You can’t beat hate with hate. You beat hate with love. So everyone out there please stop fighting. We can’t beat it that way,” Green said.

This video is especially important today as so many professional athletes are spreading the lie the “all lives matter” is somehow a racist statement. Bobby Green is living proof every life matters regardless of skin color.

BLM ‘activists’ throw bottles, steal property from Trump supporters during Brandon Straka’s #WalkAway event

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:36 AM PDT

Leftists often demand that their voices be heard without their protests being stifled by, well, anyone. They don’t want counter-protesters, law enforcement, or the press getting in their way when they want to get a message out. But the same cannot be said about how they handle protests and rallies from the right, as Brandon Straka and the #WalkAway movement learned Saturday in Dallas.

Throughout the peaceful rally in support of President Trump, the #WalkAway rally was interrupted as Black Lives Matter activists harassed those at the event. At one point, a security guard for #WalkAway had to forcibly remove a counter-protester. But police ended up arresting the security guard instead of the violent protester.

FOLLOWERS I NEED YOUR HELP!!!
BLM agitator infiltrated stage area of today’s rally then put his fist into security’s neck when being removed. @DallasPD ARRESTED THE SECURITY AGENT!! He’s been held for over 4 hours! Dallas PD not releasing security agent.
RT &DEMAND his release!! pic.twitter.com/ghMwZa4lFi

— Brandon Straka (@BrandonStraka) September 5, 2020

But things got even more intense after the rally as organizers were attacked by a large mob of Black Lives Matter “activists.” At least one phone was taken by the “activists” and destroyed and physical attacks can be seen peppered into their hateful and intimidating rant. As JD and Tammy discussed on the latest episode of Conservative News Briefs, the video looked rather terrifying.

This was the most terrifying moment of my life. My team &I went to the police to check on detained security agent. 30-40 BLM began throwing bottles at us & chasing us. They stole my employee’s phone &smashed it. We had to run for 4-5 blocks. All Dallas news stations were there. pic.twitter.com/84ZWXtPo93

— Brandon Straka (@BrandonStraka) September 6, 2020

Black Lives Matter “activists” are all about the First Amendment for them, but they do everything they can to intimidate and suppress views that are not perfectly aligned with them. Brandon Straka and the #WalkAway movement were victimized in Dallas.

Bob & Eric Save America from Covid lies and more with Shawnasaurus and GhoStorm

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:02 PM PDT

As the rhetoric and tension heats up, violence is now in common theme in these liberal cities that have fallen to the mobs. Liberal mayors and governors better either unable, or more often unwilling, to tackle the rampant violence that is destroying these once-great American cities.

Americans are scared. Ammunition and firearms are flying off the shelves. The future of this country is uncertain, but the resolve of our patriots has never been stronger.

Somewhere along the line, our culture decayed. And we, on this show, are trying to find out. Because you can’t solve the problem until you can properly diagnose the disease. Watch as we try to Save America! #BobAndErichttps://t.co/ZvpOCWtwHW

— Eric Matheny🎙 (@EricMMatheny) September 6, 2020

Bob and Eric further discuss the updated CDC Covid death numbers, namely the 6% figure that was recently released, indicating that nearly 94% of Covid deaths may not have been caused by Covid but by other unrelated health conditions. Bob and Eric discuss the frustration of the American people as our nation still reels from the effects of lockdowns and unconstitutional mandates.

Bob and Eric discuss the highly successful MAGA Drag the Interstate Rally, and feature an interview with the event organizer. And the unofficial cultural correspondent of the show, Twitter sensation Shawnasaurus, comes back to talk about the intersection of politics and sports.

It’s another episode of hard-hitting social commentary, up to the minute news, and a few well-deserved moments of levity.

Amazon shafts Seattle following Kshama Sawant’s Marxist policies

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 12:27 PM PDT

Is Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos angry with Seattle’s city government for creating an “Amazon tax” designed to fuel their Marxist agenda? If he is, he hasn’t outwardly displayed an emotional response. Instead, he’s just redirecting jobs to nearby Bellevue where the city government is not trying to tax larger companies what they consider to be their “fair share.”

As most conservative commentators have pointed out, there’s nothing fair about what Seattle is trying to do with the JumpStart Tax, a payroll tax on the city’s biggest businesses and highest earners, including Amazon. It is arguably the most combative tax policy towards medium-sized and large companies in the nation. Spearheaded by socialist city council member Kshama Sawant, the JumpStart Tax has drawn rebuke from even the moderate left for it’s anti-business positioning.

As journalist Brandi Kruse, host of The Divide, asked of Sawant over two years ago, “Are you going to own that?”

So far, the answer has been, “No.” Instead, Sawant has continued to paint Amazon and other big companies that create jobs in her city as the bad guys. By Sawant’s reckoning, anyone who has been as successful as Amazon or Jeff Bezos is obligated to do more than they already do to help everyone else. As Sawant’s hero, Karl Marx, said, “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”

This is a huge win for Bellevue, but it does not come without cost or risk. The community and government are considered to be much more business-friendly than Seattle and will need to continue to be that way if they want to take advantage of other companies following Amazon’s lead. However, it will cause turbulence in the local jobs and housing markets and will almost certainly raise cost of living. If they can handle it, we’ll know that the problem in Seattle was never Amazon but the city leadership itself, as Kruse noted:

“We’ll know for sure that it wasn’t about Amazon, but about aimless leaders who got so caught up on a slogan, that they let their city suffer. And all Seattle will be left with is a tax on high-paying jobs with no high-paying jobs left to tax.”

The NOQ Report for September 6, 2020

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:58 AM PDT

On today’s episode of NOQ Report big show, Labor Day weekend seems to be starting off with a bang, at least for those supporting the #WalkAway movement. Brandon Straka’s team and supporters were chased off the streets in Dallas by an angry mob of Black Lives Matter supporters unhappy with their presence. They threw bottles, stole personal property, and verbally attacked the actual peaceful protesters who support President Trump.

Food Lion reversed it’s anti-American stance on employees wearing face masks with the United States flag on them after initially telling Gary Dean, a 69-year-old U.S. Air Force veteran, there were complaints that his mask was offensive. Yes, we live in a society in which the American Flag is somehow considered offensive by so-called Americans.

“As a veteran, my dad being a World War II hero, my best friend killed in Vietnam, out of respect for them, I can’t just say, ‘No, I’ll take my flag and put it in my pocket,” Dean said.

In Detroit, law enforcement are having their hands tied against violent rioters.

The lawsuit claimed that some of the officers’ use of force had left some protesters hospitalized.

For once, I agree with Kamala Harris, though for completely different reasons. On Saturday, the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee told CNN’s Dana Bash that she would not listen to President Trump if a vaccine is released before the election.

“So, let’s just say there’s a vaccine that is approved and even distributed before the election,” Bash said. “Would you get it?”

“Well, I think that’s going to be an issue for all of us,” Harris answered. “I will say that I would not trust Donald Trump and it would have to be a credible source of information that talks about the efficacy and the reliability of whatever he’s talking about. I will not take his word for it.”

As long as we can vote in person, I’m all for just about whatever means are necessary to make it happen, even if that means not getting out of our cars. According to the LA Times:

Honda Center in Anaheim will serve as a polling place for the presidential election, with all Orange County citizens invited to drop off ballots there or vote in person — either inside the arena or inside their vehicle.

“A polling place in your car,” said Neal Kelley, Orange County’s registrar of voters.

Honda Center will be a one-stop voting location from Oct. 30 through Election Day, Nov. 3.

“We’re going to have a very large setup inside of the Honda Center,” Kelley said, “as well as drive-through lanes in the parking lot.”

My interview with congressional candidate in Sacramento Chris Bish premiered in this episode and will be part of Freedom Discourse soon.

Lastly, I discussed why President Trump needs an unambiguous landslide victory in November. There are many reasons, including what was detailed in an excellent article in American Mind by Michael Anton titled, “The Coming Coup?” It explains how Democrats and the Deep State are laying the groundwork and planting the seeds they need to challenge election results when they lose in November.

This really is the election of our lifetimes. Patriots need to be focused on getting the truth out there as mainstream media continues to spread lies.

With 2020 already demonstrating it has no regard for civility or common sense, it’s important that American patriots understand the challenges coming out way. Today’s show is just the tip of the iceberg for us all.

Liberticidal leftists: You don’t need to buy a gun because the riots aren’t real

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:44 AM PDT

“War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” – George Orwell

The News & Observer has now gone full Orwellian with an editorial that demands that we all ignore reality and forget about buying a gun because they say so. In a piece originally entitled: Donald Trump’s fake fear is having a real effect on NC gun sales.

That was the edited version – the original neglected some of the basic rules of the King’s English. Remember, these are people who know better that you. So, when you see ‘peacefully’ violent riots out on the streets, ‘defunded’, and denigrated police departments, there is no need for you to have a gun:

“Firearm sales surged when the pandemic forced a shutdown in March. Now sales are rising again as President Trump warns of U.S. cities being overrun by looting mobs while police are left helpless to respond for lack of funding and respect.

Trump’s appeal to fear is a desperate fiction peddled by a trailing candidate who wants to shift the subject from his abject failure to respond to the pandemic. But it’s having an effect that’s as real as a bullet.”

Sometimes you just have to admire the chutzpah of the left’s socialist media minions in phrasing the left’s ongoing control fetish as something that isn’t their fault. But they top that with the allusion that all of the rioting is nothing more than a ‘desperate fiction’.

Contradictions always expose outright falsehoods

It gets even better when they quote Shannon Klug, a volunteer from Moms Demand [gun confiscation] who gives voice to everyone’s concerns and contradicts their ‘fake fear’ line:

“It’s not a far jump to understand why people feel the need to protect themselves” with a gun, she said. ”But you really have to know what you’re doing with it.”

So in the span of a few lines of partisan propaganda, we’re gone from ‘fake fear’ to people feeling the need to ‘protect themselves’. Why would anyone need to buy a gun if all of this is a ‘desperate fiction’?

Leftists say you don’t need a gun because the police will protect you

The same people who say that now want to ‘Defund the Police’. So they want to confiscate your guns and get rid of the police. Does that make any sense?

Those of us on the pro-liberty Right respect and support the police. But we also know they can’t be everywhere at once. Thus we see the vital importance of self-defense.

Now, we’re supposed to buy into the insanity abolishing the police AND confiscating guns.

You can’t ignore danger if you live in the real world

Those of us who don’t dwell in the rarefied air of gated community or vaunted editorial office know that the threat is real, it’s not a ‘desperate fiction’ but a danger that has become all too real. Especially to Aaron “Jay” Danielson brutally executed on the streets of Portland Oregon.

Consider the words of F. Paul Valone, President of Grass Roots North Carolina and Executive Director, Rights Watch International:

Far from “Donald Trump’s fake fear,” people buying guns at a rate 145 percent that of last year are responding to Antifa-fueled rioting, nineteen leftist cities either slashing police budgets or planning to, and the “Ferguson effect,” wherein police, persecuted for enforcing laws, avoid making arrests. The result is exploding homicide.

New gun buyers finally realize what we’ve said for decades: the police can’t protect you. That includes in Raleigh, where a business owner reporting arson commented: “We called 911. We got nothing … (The dispatcher) said we will not send anybody out if it’s going to put our people in danger … I said, ‘look I don’t think y’all understand, we’re not calling for the fun of it. There are blazes going on across the street. There are people that live around these houses.’”

The bottom line: The left prioritizes power over your life and liberty

The nation’s socialist left doesn’t care about your safety or your liberty for that matter. They only care about enhancing their power. That is the rule that explains all of their actions.

Most people realize that it’s pure insanity to confiscate guns and get rid of the police. But for the left, this makes perfect sense because it grants them even more power over your life.

Al Mohler’s stunning lack of self-awareness

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 11:40 AM PDT

In the largest protestant denomination in America, Al Mohler is undoubtedly the most powerful figure in said institution. Sitting as President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, his influence carries much weight in the ecclesiastical affairs of the Southern Baptist Convention. The grave threat, perhaps greater than the theological liberalism that necessitated the Conservative Resurgence, of the Social Justice Gospel has made great inroads with evangelical Christianity in America. Al Mohler is routinely criticized for allowing this infiltration. On September 2nd, Al Mohler had James Lindsay on his “Thinking In Public” podcast to discuss Critical Theory and Intersectionality.

Though James Lindsay is undoubtedly a subject matter expert, he is an atheist, though one who can articulate Christian beliefs well. This raised questions about Al Mohler’s reticence to discuss this issue with orthodox Southern Baptists who are also experts on this issue, such as Tom Ascol. James Lindsay has also not been shy about criticizing the Southern Baptist Convention’s embrace of Cultural Marxism.

The podcast itself is rather informative, mostly as Jame Lindsay articulates historic advance of this movement. But there are a few instances I wanted to highlight. The first was a possible reference to Critical Race Theory being promoted by the Southern Baptist Convention as an analytical tool. It’s not certain that James Lindsay was referencing Resolution 9 specifically, but Al Mohler had no disagreements about Lindsay’s point about the inability to compromise with the ideology.

The second clip I show is James Lindsay talking about how institutions that embrace Critical Theory lose all their credibility in a short period of time. Whether this is a pointed statement is less clear than the last. Nonetheless Al Mohler nods along in agreement before talking about corporate diversity trainers. Mohler then asks how you can stop the infiltration. James Lindsay has a good answer for that, but the point I wanted to focus on was that Al Mohler has actively employed Critical Race Theorist. He has fired professors who opposed this movement, like Dr. Russell Fuller. Russell Fuller would then blow the whistle naming names of professors such at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary who have all taught or written dissertations using Critical Theory and Intersectionality. The video contains a clip of Matthew Hall espousing Critical Race Theory.

As Critical Theory becomes more pervasive in society, and increasingly threatening to the spiritual well-being of the nation as a whole, it is necessary to take a more combative stance against this neo-Marxist movement. Al Mohler has consistently been double-minded, condemning Critical Theory whilst incubating it. Things will not change as long as he is permitted to lack such self-awareness in the public discourse.

Finita la Revolución, Messrs. Commissars

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 08:30 AM PDT

In August 2020, I had just one wish – that the Democrat Party Convention would continue for at least for another month. The fact is that the Zoom-convention of the leftists consistently gave Trump a one percent rating boost every day that it continued.

Why? Because by August, Americans finally learned what socialism smells like. It smells like the fumes of burnt cars, burned down/looted businesses and houses. It smells like Molotov cocktails, police blood, and hospital rooms. In other words, Americans felt well that American socialism smells just like any other socialism – like garbage and filth.

After the Convention, the Democrats suddenly discovered that their ratings had dropped because none of them had ever bothered to condemn the “peaceful” arsonists, “peaceful” hooligans, and “peaceful” looters in four days. They immediately called for an end to the pogroms, but it was too late. By the end of summer 2020, the word “thug” had long become synonymous with the word “democrat,” and now leftists will have to work for decades to convince American citizens otherwise.

The Democrat Convention was a convention of leftist conspirators who have long made no secret of their goal of destroying America. The Republican Convention was a convention of patriots, who also make no secret of their pursuit of American prosperity. The Democrat bunch was boring, and the enthusiasm level was about zero. The Republican Convention was encouraging, and the level of enthusiasm was off the charts. Whereas the Democratic Convention described America in dark, depressing, and vicious terms, the Republican Convention saw America’s future as bright, prosperous, and optimistic.

The inexperienced revolutionary Kamala Harris said that the riots inspired by the Democrats would not end under any conditions – neither before nor after the elections. Thank you, Madame Commissar! The candidacy of a vice president like you will definitely help the election campaign – not Biden, but Trump.

Currently, the riots are happening strictly in democratic enclaves. The mayor of Portland has officially turned down help offered by President Trump. To be honest, I did not expect the mayor of Portland, communist Ted Wheeler, to make such an impressive contribution to Trump’s campaign. Thank you, Commissar Wheeler!

Democrats sanctioned the destruction of several American cities in the hope that their inhabitants would be so dumb that they would vote for the Democrats because of the pogroms. I wonder if any of them estimate how many votes each burned car and each looted store brings to Biden? How many votes do these actions bring into Trump’s camp?

Democrats continue to make one stupid mistake after another with enviable persistence. For example, they not only inspired violence and pogroms, but they openly supported them. Then, when the ersatz revolutionaries failed to achieve results, they blamed Trump for the pogroms. At the same time, no one (I emphasize – no one) can say the name of the Republican mayor, in whose city mass “peaceful riots” are taking place.

By now, our country has had the opportunity to preview the vernissage of socialism with a Chinese face on American soil.

Antifa and BLM are working overtime to alienate as many voters as possible from the Democrats. Both white Antifa and black BLM are working hard to shrink the Democratic electoral base. We should say a most sincere thank you to the Antifa and BLM militants from the grateful citizens of the United States. The anti-American antics of American goons in the summer of 2020 have significantly boosted the ranks of Trump’s supporters.

The main difference between the pogroms of 2020 and the pogroms of the 60s and 70s is their funding source. If in the 20th century, the Soviet communists were the sponsors of the riots, in the 21st century, the Chinese communists are. Another difference is that protests and violence in the 20th century were widespread. Today, only the coverage of these events by means of mass disinformation media is ubiquitous, but the pogroms themselves are limited only to those cities in which the mayors are die-hard communists.

Finally, the protests of the 60s took place under the mantras of Peace, Love, and Drugs. Today the slogans of the rioters are different – Violence, Hatred, and Drugs.

We know that among the democrat-pogrom-mongers, there are criminals and the mentally ill, and simply sadists and maniacs, but these categories of “peaceful pogrom-mongers” do not have an ideological component, and they have no organizational structure. There are two categories of thugs who are drugged with bloody ideology – Antifa and BLM. Both were created by the communists, but here it is necessary to clarify that they are supporters of one very influential branch of communism – Maoism.

In other words, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party plays a decisive role in the bloody unrest in America’s democrat enclaves.

Homegrown American hongweibing are trying to inject their virtual ideas and virtual utopias into real America. The generation that grew up with virtual video games has never experienced pain, and they simply do not understand why, in response to a brick or a Molotov cocktail, they receive a blow from a policeman with a truncheon, after which they cannot recover for several weeks. After all, this should not be so – in video games, they beat you, they even kill you, but after a second, you jump to your feet, as if nothing had happened. There is no pain or frustration; there is only a desire to win.

America has met on its way those who want to win without taking their ass off the couch. But the political spectacle is coming to an end, and it is time for the exalted kids to return to their unfinished video games.

Of course, being a communist in a free country like America is safe, enjoyable, and fashionable. Unfortunately, American hongweibing cannot even imagine what it would be like to be a free person in a communist country. The Democrats went all-in and decided to sacrifice American youth to the communist utopia.
The thugs made a habit of carrying with them a model of a guillotine (more precisely, a “peaceful guillotine”), and they are delighted at the sight of a Trump dummy having its head cut clean off. Angela Davis, a communist, known since Soviet times, recently announced that the pogroms of 2020 are “a rehearsal for the revolution.” Of course, the Chinese curators of the ersatz revolutionaries did not tell these ignoramuses anything about another leftist revolution – in France – and about who exactly suffered from it the most.

As it is known, supporters of utopian left ideas, all without exception, were decapitated during the French Revolution. It has become a tradition, and the process of annihilation of the previous generation of leftists by the new generation of leftists has become permanent.

By now, the Democrat Party has transformed into a political Chronos, which, according to tradition, will soon begin to devour its own children.

There is not long to wait – just two months.

How to keep the Left from debunking the 6% narrative

Posted: 06 Sep 2020 07:41 AM PDT

Conservatives have been jumping all over this new information released by the CDC stating that only 6% of the those listed as COVID-19 deaths are caused ONLY by coronavirus without any other underlying conditions. The problem is that many are not accurately representing what these numbers are actually saying, which hurts our credibility. If we get this wrong, the Left will debunk us, and rightfully so.

The thing is, we have the truth on our side, and this new 6% story is no different! If we accurately represent the figures properly, this actually helps our argument that we shouldn’t have shut down our economy… but if we misrepresent what the numbers mean, then we won’t have a leg to stand on.

If you are running with the false narrative that only 6% of the COVID-19 deaths were ACTUALLY deaths from COVID, you got it wrong. If you are running with the fake news that the 94% of claimed deaths aren’t actually coronavirus deaths, you got that wrong, too.

So how do we present this information in a way that the Left can’t debunk us? By articulating what this information actually means. That’s exactly what is done in this episode of Let’s Talk Right Now.

NBC MORNING RUNDOWN

Monday, September 7, 2020

Good morning, NBC News readers.

Happy Labor Day. Before you go out and enjoy the last unofficial day of summer, here’s what you need to know.

‘He needs to come’: Warning signs for Biden in North Carolina as race tightens

With the election nearing, polls show a tight race in North Carolina, an important Southern swing state.

Interviews with a number of North Carolina voters, current and former party officials, political strategists, pollsters and politics watchers paint a picture of a critical battleground state that remains within President Donald Trump’s grasp, even as the coronavirus continues to ravage the nation’s health and economy and protesters keep up calls for racial justice.

If Joe Biden wants to win the states’ 15 electoral votes in November, voters say he needs to do more than just phone it in.

“He needs to come. He needs to address North Carolinians,” said Debbie George, 61, a yoga instructor in Charlotte, North Carolina. “These rehearsed speeches in front of no one are not cutting it.”

Meantime, despite the fact that Biden continues to lead Trump in every battleground state and Trump’s “law and order” message doesn’t seem to be working, Democrats are panicking about the election.

“Democrats under Trump have a bad case of Charlie Brown syndrome: They can’t stop being afraid that the ball is going to get yanked out from under them,” said Jared Leopold, a former top aide to Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s Democratic presidential campaign.

No matter who you plan to vote for, many Americans are feeling anxious about making sure their vote counts. Check out five voting tips experts recommend to make sure that happens.

Trump calls on fans to bombard Atlantic co-owner after bombshell story

President Donald Trump called on his fans Sunday to inundate The Atlantic’s co-owner Laurene Powell Jobs with messages after the magazine reported that he once called American service members killed in combat “losers” and “suckers.”

“Steve Jobs would not be happy that his wife is wasting money he left her on a failing Radical Left Magazine that is run by a con man (Goldberg) and spews FAKE NEWS & HATE,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning. “Call her, write her, let her know how you feel!!!”

The tweet was the latest salvo in the president’s dayslong effort to deny the story, written by The Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg. The story cited several sources with firsthand knowledge of Trump’s remarks.

California hiker dies as record heat wave and wildfires scorch state

Authorities in Los Angeles County shut down trails in the Santa Monica Mountains after a woman died while hiking as a record-setting heatwave and wildfires scorched California.

The National Weather Service documented a slew of record-setting temperatures across the state Sunday. In Woodland Hills, just north of Calabasas, the mercury reached a sweltering 121 degrees.

The weather service issued its highest fire alert — a red flag warning — for the mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura counties Sunday evening.

The warnings were issued as firefighters continued to fight massive blazes across the state.

One of 23 major wildfires burning in California was started by a pyrotechnic device used at a gender-reveal party, authorities said Sunday.

Meantime, with the state still battling coronavirus, San Francisco’s mayor railed against a Burning Man gathering on a local beach.

“This was absolutely reckless & selfish,” Mayor London Breed tweeted. “You are not celebrating. You are putting people’s lives at risk.”

Rochester officials announce police reforms after death of Daniel Prude

Rochester, New York, is moving crisis intervention out of the police department amid outrage and protests over the death of Daniel Prude, a Black man with mental health issues who died after officers placed a spit hood over his head and restrained him.

“We had a human being in a need of help, in need of compassion. In that moment, we had an opportunity to protect him, to keep him warm, to bring him to safety, to begin the process of healing him and lifting him up,” Warren said. “We have to own the fact that in the moment we did not do that.”

Police Chief La’Ron Singletary told reporters that he recognized the need for reform in his department and that he was working with experts and clinicians to get outpatient services for those who struggle with mental health and are in repeated contact with police.

“I understand that there are certain calls that law enforcement shouldn’t handle alone, and we are looking at ways to reimagine policing surrounding mental health and have been for the last several months,” Singletary said.

Now the modelers in the epidemiological profession need to learn what the economists figured out long ago: Human life is too complex to be accurately modeled, much less predicted.
