Women running for national and state office may be on track to break the record-setting runs and gains of 2018, as Republicans try to catch up with their Democratic counterparts, Axios’ Margaret Talev and Naomi Shavin write.
- Why it matters: It’s worth remembering that the struggle to reach the White House masks a lot of real progress at lower levels.
The big picture: Congress notched its highest number of women after the 2018 midterms, and there’s a push to go higher.
- Senate races: 17 female candidates already have filed and 45 more are likely, for a potential total of 62, according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. That would surpass the previous record of 53 in 2018.
- House races: 584 women are running or likely to run, compared with 437 two years earlier, per the center.
- That includes 217 Republican female candidates for the House this year — a sharp increase from 2018, when there were just 96. Democrats have increased their numbers a bit, too.
But it’s not just Congress. There’s also progress in the state legislatures:
- Nevada’s legislature made history last year when women captured a bare majority of the seats in both chambers.
- New Hampshire and Colorado have hit majority milestones for individual chambers.
Reality check: The door’s been flung open for women seeking the presidency, yet with Elizabeth Warren’s withdrawal from the race, we’re on course for a general election that pits a white man in his 70s against a white man in his 70s.
- A record-breaking six women (including two of color) were among the crowded 2020 Democratic field.
- Now, only Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii remains.
Many of the coronavirus stories getting shared the most on social media are packaged to drive fear rather than build understanding about the illness, Axios’ Neal Rothschild and Sara Fischer write from NewsWhip data.
- Why it matters: Social media greases and amplifies dramatic headlines, while more functional or nuanced information gets squashed.
One of the biggest dangers during this outbreak is the misinformation that has been spreading about the virus.
- Here’s a Foreign Policy article debunking the myth that it came from bat soup, and a Poynter article about the three waves of misinformation about the virus.
Other top pieces used selective information and quotes, like exaggerated death toll predictions and descriptions of Wuhan, China, as a “zombieland.”
- Of the top 50 stories about coronavirus since it entered the news this year, more have come from the Daily Mail (eight) than any other publisher.

Not since the aftermath of 9/11 has there been such a fear of flying, writes Joann Muller, who covers the future of transportation for Axios.
- Why it matters: The coronavirus has the airline industry bracing for the worst downturn since the Great Recession.
- Although the government says it’s safe to fly domestically, the drumbeat of news about COVID-19 has cautious employers stifling business travel and worried families rethinking their summer vacation plans.
Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said yesterday the sudden drop in domestic air travel “has a 9/11-like feel.”
- “We could discount prices tomorrow and it wouldn’t do any good,” said Kelly.
What’s happening: Travel agents are being inundated with calls and emails from panicked clients canceling trips and seeking refunds.
- “Travel agents have to become psychiatrists, OK? We have to become therapists for all these people who call in,” Tammy Levent, CEO of Elite Travel, told NPR.
- Even those who bought travel insurance aren’t necessarily protected because many policies explicitly exclude epidemics or “known events.”
United Airlines cut international flights by 20% and domestic flights by 10%.
- More than 1,000 planes have been taken out of service worldwide. (Wall Street Journal)
Reality check: The public’s fear of flying may be overblown, fanned by a wave of cancellations of big trade shows, conferences and events.
- Because of the way air circulates and is filtered on airplanes, most viruses and other germs do not spread easily on them, according to the CDC.
- Vice President Pence reiterated it is safe to fly on domestic and international routes except from areas covered by U.S. travel advisories related to coronavirus (China, Iran, South Korea, Italy and Japan).

Governments can slow the ferocious coronavirus pace (left to itself, can double every five to six days), “but bureaucratic time is not the same as virus time,” The Economist writes in its lead editorial.

JPMorgan Chase chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon, 63, underwent emergency heart surgery yesterday, the bank announced:
- “The good news is that it was caught early and the surgery was successful. He is awake, alert and recovering well.”
- Dimon is among the world’s most visible CEOs, and was a constant presence in Washington’s corridors of power as chairman of the Business Roundtable, a job he handed off to Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon last year.

THINK ABOUT THIS: What if this is only the beginning of the coronavirus economic downturn? Imagine if stocks keep on slipping and, even more concerning, if Americans truly stop traveling domestically and internationally over the spring and summer. Many of the members of Congress we spoke to this week were worried about the virus reemerging this fall, pressing the pause button on the economy again.
COULD CONGRESS BE FORCED into some kind of economic stimulus this spring or summer right before the election? Could Washington be forced to try to help airlines, hotels and even individuals in the middle of a political season?
MORE BLUNTLY: Would Democrats want to vote for any kind of bailout package that could help with President DONALD TRUMP’S reelection? And could Trump’s administration handle a legislative crisis with precision under pressure?
— CNBC’S @carlquintanilla: “‘We’re 97% domestic, so what we’re seeing is a drop-off in DOMESTIC travel,’ says Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly on @CNBC just now. ‘It has a 9/11-like feel.’”
TIME MAGAZINE HAS A BIG READ on how the Trump administration squandered the early weeks of the outbreak and is now scrambling to contain its spread inside the United States. Just Thursday, Maryland announced three cases in Montgomery County — just outside of Washington.

TIMES: “Here’s why Chinese scientists say there’s a second, more dangerous coronavirus strain,” by Melissa Healy: “The global outbreak that has sickened nearly 100,000 people across six continents may actually be fueled by two variants of the same coronavirus: one older and less aggressive and a newer version whose mutations may have made it more contagious and more deadly, according to a controversial new study.
“Chinese scientists who compared the genetic sequences of 103 viral samples from patients infected with COVID-19 said their evidence suggests that the virulent version of the coronavirus — which they tagged the ‘L-type’ version — was the dominant strain in the earliest phase of the outbreak that began in Wuhan late last year. That strain, they said, appeared to recede as the epidemic progressed.
“But among samples collected later, as COVID-19 spread across China and into other countries, a variant of the virus they dubbed the ‘S-type’ was more common, the scientists reported. They suggested that the genetic makeup of the S version more closely resembles coronaviruses circulating in bats and pangolins, the animals that are thought to have incubated the virus before it jumped to humans. And they surmised that it is a less virulent version.”

Steve Watkins’ 2018 campaign that were paid for by his father — the latest political headache for the embattled Kansas Republican.
“At the heart of the FEC probe is whether Watkins’ father made illegal contributions to boost Watkins’ congressional bid. Steve Watkins Sr. confirmed in a brief interview with POLITICO that the FEC is investigating him for giving thousands of dollars to his daughters, a home-building contractor and the contractor’s wife, which they then used to max out to Watkins’ campaign. Those types of donations violate campaign finance laws.
“The elder Watkins — a Topeka-based endocrinologist who also dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into a super PAC to support his son’s election — insisted he didn’t know that what he was doing was illegal. Watkins’ office, meanwhile, said the freshman lawmaker is not under investigation by the FEC.

VALLEY TALK — “Facebook Removes Trump Campaign Ads, Citing Census Interference Policy,” by WSJ’s Emily Glazer and Janet Adamy: “Facebook Inc. removed Trump campaign ads that referred to a census, saying they violated a company policy aimed at preventing disinformation and other interference with the nationwide 2020 census, which goes online next week.
“The ads, which began running on the social network this week, asked people to take the ‘Official 2020 Congressional District Census’ and then directed users to a website for fundraising to support Mr. Trump’s re-election. ‘The information we gather from this survey will help us craft our strategies for YOUR CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT,’ the ads said.
“Facebook said Thursday that it was the first time the company removed a Trump campaign ad for violating its census interference policy. ‘There are policies to prevent confusion around the U.S. Census, and this is an example of those being enforced,’ a Facebook spokesman said.”

The Morning Briefing: America Isn’t Sexist—Female Democratic Candidates Are Just Awful People
Enough With the Nonsense Already
Elizabeth Warren’s exit from the 2020 Democratic clown car was seemingly only moments old before a torrent of hot takes about her failure began lighting up the internet. This was to be expected, of course, as the rules of identity politics clearly state that any Democrat who properly fills any of the diversity checklist boxes cannot possibly be held responsible for his or her own failure in an election.
After voters gave Fauxcahontas plenty of writing on the wigwam wall to read Tuesday night, I lamented in Wednesday’s briefing that we were soon going to be forced to endure some high octane excuse-making:
The litany of excuses for Warren’s failure will be tedious, of course. We will be lectured for weeks, if not months, that America still isn’t ready for a woman president, blah, blah, blah. Warren is so prone to lying that she may even come up with a few that Hillary Clinton never thought of.
Like Hillary, Warren has so many flaws to cover for that the Dem media has to work overtime screaming “MISOGYNY!” and getting really creative with the retroactive makeover.
The Warren excuse parade with a bit of delicious irony, as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi blamed and “element of misogyny” on the fact that we won’t have a woman president after this next election.
Again, that’s Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, the most powerful elected Democrat in the Land. Two heartbeats away from the presidency, and all that. When Barack Obama was president, she was the second most powerful Democrat. She’s a woman who’s been at the top of the American political food chain for a long time.
But misogyny, or something.
My favorite of all the ridiculous attempts to explain away Warren’s failure was this piece in The Atlantic titled “America Punished Elizabeth Warren for Her Competence.”
We’re supposed to treat female candidates as equals with males but if one should come up short we infantilize her and say that she was “punished.” Such is the ceaselessly wearisome nature of identity politics.
This post-mortem discusses the fact that so many find Warren off-putting, then spins wildly out of control attempting to explain it:
The campaigns of those who deviate from the traditional model of the American president—the campaign of anyone who is not white and Christian and male—will always carry more than their share of weight. But Warren had something about her, apparently: something that galled the pundits and the public in a way that led to assessments of her not just as “strident” and “shrill,” but also as “condescending.” The matter is not merely that the candidate is unlikable, these deployments of condescending imply. The matter is instead that her unlikability has a specific source, beyond bias and internalized misogyny. Warren knows a lot, and has accomplished a lot, and is extremely competent, condescending acknowledges, before twisting the knife: It is precisely because of those achievements that she represents a threat. Condescending attempts to rationalize an irrational prejudice. It suggests the lurchings of a zero-sum world—a physics in which the achievements of one person are insulting to everyone else. When I hear her talk, I want to slap her, even when I agree with her.
So…a woman who has accomplished a lot can’t have personality flaws, is that the message here?
That’s the thing, Elizabeth Warren is grating, and not because men are threatened by successful women. She’s just got a crappy personality.
She obviously shares many personality flaws with Hillary Clinton, chief among them that overwhelming phoniness that she oozes when trying to act like she’s just one of the regular folk. I’ll be thanking God every morning for a few weeks that I won’t be subjected to any more videos of Elizabeth Warren redefining awkward while attempting to bond with the commoners.
I’m almost beginning to feel that there is a conspiracy afoot here. Democrats need to have a deck of victim cards ready to play at all times. If they keep running thoroughly unlikable women like Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren who are destined to fail because they are generally awful people, they can keep sexism and misogyny front and center, even though it’s all b.s.
The reality — especially in this modern media era — is that a little personality goes a long way for a presidential candidate. Warren is the kind of candidate who doesn’t do well under a brighter spotlight. Let us remember that she was hovering near the top of the polls just last fall. She started to flail almost as soon as the scrutiny on her increased.
That happens to male candidates all the time, by the way.
Elizabeth Warren wasn’t punished. She merely failed to emerge victorious from a primary field of record size. The odds weren’t in her favor.
She was trying to claim the progressive ground that Bernie Sanders had an entire election cycle head start to grab.
It just didn’t work. If Elizabeth Warren is so competent and accomplished, she should take full credit for her failure.

Biden’s Race to Lose
After what former DNC chairwoman Donna Brazile called the “most impressive 72 hours [she’s] ever seen in American politics,” the Democratic race is right back to where it was a year ago: Joe Biden as the best bet, with Bernie Sanders putting up a strong challenge.
Sure, there were some twists and turns along the way—Elizabeth Warren looked particularly formidable last fall, and Biden himself looked to be dead in the water as recently as the New Hampshire primary—but with Mike Bloomberg and Elizabeth Warren ending their candidacies, we’re down to the race that most pundits were predicting in March 2019 (plus Tulsi Gabbard, who remains in the race with just two delegates).
The Parallel Tracks of Coronavirus Response
The federal government is still struggling to get a grasp on the ongoing coronavirus situation in the U.S. Earlier this week, the government announced two substantial changes to its coronavirus response policies: The FDA would permit private labs to create their own diagnostic tests for the disease, and the U.S. would open testing to anyone who wanted one, even if they were asymptomatic.
But Vice President Mike Pence, who is heading the White House’s coronavirus response, acknowledged Thursday that the government is not yet prepared to handle any spike in demand for test kits, as the virus continues to crop up in new locations.

- The exploding cost of going to college is understandably a hot-button topic this election year, as young people’s anger over the Faustian bargain of college debt helps to fuel Bernie Sanders’s outsider presidential run. But while the Sanders conversation has focused on whether the government should step in to help relieve that debt burden, there’s another question worth asking, too: Why should universities be charging as much as they are? That’s what makes this Atlantic profile of Purdue University president Mitch Daniels so interesting: the former Indiana governor has brought his famously parsimonious management style from the statehouse to his current role, and the result has been a blossoming college that hasn’t raised its tuition since 2013. DNC hopes to rush Biden nomination before voters get buyer’s remorse
Posted: 06 Mar 2020 05:59 AM PST The Democratic Establishment got their wish on Super Tuesday with a resurgent Joe Biden coming out on top and taking the delegate lead. All of the major competitors other than Bernie Sanders were eliminated. It’s now the former Vice President and his hope of being a continuation of the Obama administration versus the Democratic Socialist who wants to burn it all down and start over. It’s an ideal situation for the DNC, at least it would have been in previous election cycles. But in their effort to make things seem “fair,” they shot themselves in the foot by prohibiting winner-take-all primaries. That means they’re stuck with what will almost certainly be a long primary season that may go all the way to the convention in July without a mathematical delegate winner. With step-1 of their master plan behind them, they’re now moving onto step-2: Burn Bernie faster. They have every reason to want to wrap this up quickly for Biden. They need time to push party unity and win back the radical progressive backers of Sanders that they’re currently upsetting. They also need to preserve as much of the campaign funds as possible for the general election; Biden has proven to be inept at fundraising throughout the campaign. But the biggest reason they need to hurry this nomination process along is fear of “buyer’s remorse” among their base. Biden is a gaffe-machine, which everyone knows, but lately he’s been appearing more challenged than usual. His old gaffes were those of a man who often spoke before he thought. Recently, he’s been having trouble with those thoughts, spilling out rhetoric that seems taxed by repetition and failing mental acuity. Is he going senile? That’s a question that some Democrats are starting to ask and many Republicans are starting to push. Even the President has been chiming in about it being “obvious” the former Vice President doesn’t always know what’s going on around him. If Democratic voters get cold feet, they may look back at Sanders and think they’d rather have a socialist who knows where he is at any given moment than a moderate who often appears lost. Biden’s biggest weakness is himself. The DNC believes they can manage him through the general election. They’re just not sure they can keep him on track now that he has the lead in the primary race. Lori Lightfoot and Chicago PD are directly responsible for sexual assault of 3-year-old
Posted: 06 Mar 2020 04:58 AM PST The fastest way to get out of jail in Chicago is to be an illegal immigrant wanted by ICE. The sanctuary city will bend over backwards, perform legal cartwheels, and do everything in their power to make absolutely certain illegal immigrants are never deported. Not on their watch. Christopher Puente, 35, is a felon. He is also an illegal immigrant who should have been turned over to ICE when he was arrested once again last year, but instead the twice-convicted Mexican national was released to roam free with the general public. Now, he’s behind bars again, charged with predatory criminal sexual assault after he allegedly locked himself in a McDonald’s bathroom with a three-year-old girl and sexually assaulted her. All Mayor Lori Lightfoot needed to do was reverse sanctuary policies which have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt to increase crime. All Chicago PD had to do was enforce the law and cooperate with their fellow law enforcement officers. Had Lightfoot and the police department held the safety of a three-year-old girl in higher regard than the desires of a criminal illegal alien, this girl and her family would not have been victims of this heinous crime. If Puente is found guilty, both Lightfoot and the complicit police department are directly responsible for what happened to this child. They had the power to stop it, but chose to honor a criminal illegal alien’s desire to roam in the city they’re charged to serve. Chicago is desperately left-leaning. They continuously vote in Democrats who have turned this once-proud city into one of the most dangerous in the nation. It’s incomprehensible that so many voters in the city willfully allow crime and economic destitution to flourish. It’s even worse that they support the very policies that allowed this three-year-old girl’s life to be changed so hideously. What makes this sad story worse is that Lightfoot and the police department had the gall to defend their actions by blaming ICE.
“If ICE is complaining, then they should do their job better,” Lightfoot said. “[ICE officials are] critical because we have said very clearly we are a welcoming city, a sanctuary city. Chicago Police Department will not cooperate with ICE on any immigration-related business. And that’s affected their ability to conduct immigration raids across the city. But that’s exactly our intention. We have to make sure our police department is seen as a legitimate force in all our communities.” At the rate Chicago is falling apart, they may not make it through another three years of Lori Lightfoot. As bad as Rahm Emanuel was, Lightfoot’s record is already far worse. Criminals and illegal immigrants rule the streets. The city may be lost. A WaPo columnist, NYT editorial board member, and MSNBC host walk into a math class…
Posted: 06 Mar 2020 04:06 AM PST It doesn’t take a genius to do basic arithmetic. We have calculators on our phones if the numbers are too big. Unfortunately, we have progressive journalists on our phones bleating at us as well, and that may be the key to understanding why so many Americans embrace modern Democratic financial policies. The math is fuzzy and mainstream media isn’t helping. Case-in-point: MSNBC host Brian Williams talking to NY Times editorial board member Mara Gay about a Tweet by Washington Post columnist Mekita Rivas. The Tweet, which lambasted billionaire Mike Bloomberg for wasting money on a presidential campaign when he could have helped every American to their share of the riches, had some mathematical challenges.
According to the now-deleted Tweet: “Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. The U.S. population is 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million and still have money left over. I feel like a $1 million check would be life-changing for most people. Yet he wasted it all on ads and STILL LOST.” As anyone with a calculator or recollections of 3rd grade math class will tell you, Rivas was off. Twitter users were quick to point out her error, so she deleted the post. That should have been the end of it, but instead she decided to double-down on her error by making another.
Keep in mind, this isn’t a random person making a mental error. This is a blue-checkmark, nationally published journalist whose opinions hold sway over the radical progressive masses. It’s no wonder they seem to think Joe Biden’s outrageously expensive proposed policies don’t go far enough or that Bernie Sanders is right that billionaires can pay for everything, leaving the rest of us soaking up million-dollar checks every month. Unfortunately, the math was shared by MSNBC, but instead of debunking it, they allowed the NY Times editorial board member to push the “leftist math” further out to the unhinged folks who still watch the news channel.
To Williams’ credit, he may have recognized the error. To his shame, his only caveat was to say, “don’t tell us if you’re ahead of us on the math.” One can also argue that he justified the math by saying, “When I read it tonight on social media, it kind of all became clear.” Did he misunderstand the math like the other two progressive journalists or did he understand it and willfully mislead his viewers? Either way, he’s complicit in the dumbing down of the American left. As I’ve said before, one of the reasons modern Democratic policies are so popular is because too many Americans lose the ability to comprehend large sums of money at a certain point. A million is a billion, a billion is a trillion… what difference does it really make to someone making $12 an hour? To those who don’t even try to wrap their heads around the differences, here’s a quick breakdown with healthcare as the basis. Biden’s “modest” healthcare plan would cost every American taxpayer an additional $5323. That’s on top of what we’re spending on healthcare right now. But he specifically kept the total number under a trillion dollars to keep his distance from Sanders’ healthcare plan. Why? Because it makes him seem more moderate. The world of politics isn’t about dealing with real numbers. It’s about dealing with numbers the people can grasp, which is why you’d never hear Biden say how much it would cost every individual taxpayer. We, as a nation, may have a hard time dealing with millions, billions, and trillions, but everyone understands that paying an additional $5k isn’t what we want. With Senate majority at risk, Republicans must start rallying now
Posted: 06 Mar 2020 01:56 AM PST Much attention has been paid to the House of Representatives as primaries on Tuesday in California demonstrated real weakness for Democrats, opening the door to the possibility of the GOP taking back the majority and removing the gavel from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi next January. Having control of the House, Senate, and White House would give the GOP agenda a huge boost for at least two of President Trump’s final four years. The House looks promising and the White House looks pretty secure as Democrats squabble over socialism versus senility. But the Senate is also in play as Democrats try to flip the four seats necessary to take back the majority they lost in 2014. What are their chances of doing that? Currently, 18 of the 35 seats up for grabs in November are safe. It would take something catastrophic for Tom Cotton to lose in Arkansas or Dick Durbin to lose in Illinois. That leaves 17 that have the possibility of being flipped, and most of them are Republicans. The good news is one of those that is almost certain to be flipped is Doug Jones in Alabama. He squeaked by the special election due to reports that his Republican opponent, Judge Roy Moore, dated teen girls when he was in his 30s. He denied the reports, but voters were spooked enough to put a Democrat in the seat vacated by former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Now Sessions and Tommy Tuberville are vying for the opportunity to take on Jones in the general election. Either one of them should beat Jones by double digits. With the Senate currently sitting at 53-47, flipping Alabama means the Democrats would need to win four elections to get a tie. Assuming Vice President Mike Pence is still the tiebreaker in 2021, Democrats would need a fifth win to get an actual majority and install Chuck Schumer as Senate Majority Leader, thus demolishing the President’s judicial agenda of plugging in right-leaning judges. This is why Schumer made his unhinged rant this week to set the stage for an election battle with Roe v. Wade unofficially on the ballot. There are currently four Republicans who are in real danger of losing their seats with several others who are not in easy races. Martha McSally of Arizona, Cory Gardner of Colorado, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Susan Collins of Maine are all behind the eight ball. Though most analysts are calling their races toss-ups, I would have a much more grim perspective. These seats are likely to be flipped if a concerted effort and a lot of money isn’t injected into those races between now and November. Gardner in particular is in trouble as Colorado has gone from purple to very much blue in recent years. Name recognition and incumbency status may not be enough to overcome the state’s blue wave that saw Bernie Sanders defeat “moderate” Joe Biden on Tuesday. Collins isn’t loved in her light blue state, either. Maine has been bucking the GOP a lot lately, and while she was once the popular Republican there with her pro-choice abortion stance, her support of Brett Kavanaugh’s conformation did not endear her to many of the Independents who supported her. But she has the money advantage and she’s been there a long time. There’s still a chance she can pull this out. McSally is simply weak. She lost to Kyrsten Sinema in 2018, then was appointed to the other Senate seat after John McCain died. But Arizona is still mostly red, leaning towards purple but not quite there yet. Of the four races, hers is the one that the GOP needs to win the most. Losing in Arizona would be a major blow to keeping the state right-leaning, opening the door to future candidates in other races because of the perceived Republican weakness. Gary Peters in Michigan is the only other Democrat with a realistic chance of being flipped. If the GOP loses all four vulnerable seats, they may need Peters’ seat to keep things moving along properly. A slim majority of 51 would hamper the GOP agenda greatly. With people like Mitt Romney and Lisa Murkowski siding with Democrats regularly, it’s important for Republicans to not rely on a sliver. We need strong majority in order to keep the judiciary leaning towards the Constitution and for the Trump agenda to move full-speed ahead if Republicans can retake control of the House. So much attention is put on presidential elections, but a win by President Trump is greatly hampered if his party cannot keep control of the Senate. This is not the time for complacency or laziness. Senator Schumer needs to be ‘red flagged’ and removed from office or justice is no longer blind
Posted: 06 Mar 2020 01:05 AM PST If an ordinary citizen had issued the threat that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer made recently in a state with vile ‘Red Flag’ gun confiscation swatting laws, they could easily experience having their door battered down at 3:00 AM in a no-knock raid to forcibly confiscate their guns, regardless if they own any or not. To borrow the words so often used in touting these laws, a ‘Red Flag’ petition under one of these due process abominations would temporarily remove him from office since he poses a threat to others or himself. Then later, the Senator could go before a court to prove he is not a threat and have himself restored to office. His name would of course be added to the instant background check system and he would be flagged whenever he runs for re-election. Thus would be the fate of any ordinary citizen who ran afoul of just about anyone who wanted revenge. A two tiered justice system that will tear the nation apartIn the case of the Minority Leader, his words were on video for all to hear, with every inflection and nuance to prove the point. However, he won’t be removed from office in this manner because there are those who prioritize power over everything else, including individual human rights set down in our founding documents. These are the people of the authoritarian left, which ironically includes Senator Schumer himself. For them it is far more important that they confiscate guns than protect individual liberty. Never mind that laws already exist to handle people ‘in crisis’ as they say. To them, the non-crisis was so dire that new laws that sweep away whole swaths of the Constitution were desperately needed without delay. Back during the days of Apartheid in South Africa, the nation’s socialist left abhorred a legal code that treated some people differently than others. However, these days that kind of injustice is perfectly acceptable to them, as long as it disarms their political enemies. Forget about the fact that it turns the very idea of due process and the rest of the bill of rights on its head. The bottom line: If ordinary citizens can be Red Flagged, why not Senator Schumer?Of course, the obligatory due process retort from the left highlights their egregious hypocrisy. The case of the Bernie Sanders supporter who tried to kill Republican lawmakers shows that some people act on threats made by politicians. Thus, we see that there is a very good reason the founders mandated due process and equality before the law. These are principles endorsed by conservatives and true liberals. Jonathan Turley: ‘Schumer sounded more like a stalker than a statesman’
Posted: 05 Mar 2020 10:01 PM PST It doesn’t take a law professor and constitutional scholar to realize Senator Chuck Schumer’s threats towards Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch were inappropriate… and that’s IF nothing else comes from them. They were unambiguous threats that the Senator’s office tried to spin as being “misinterpreted.” This was a lie. The only viable interpretation is that Schumer was threatening consequences against the Supreme Court Justices if he didn’t get his way on an abortion bill. While most are focused on the risks of threats coming from people in power against others, the potential repercussions being someone acts out on those threats, there’s another angle that’s important to understand. This was interference from one branch of the federal government against another. It’s unlikely the Justices were swayed by the Senator’s threats, but the attempt in and of itself is worrisome in our politically polarized society. Georgetown University law professor and constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley chimed in on Schumer’s remarks.
Turley, who voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and has criticized President Trump for comments directed at the court in the past, noted the hypocrisy in coverage and reactions from the left to Schumer’s remarks. When President Trump or other Republicans make less-threatening statements that seem to go after the courts, mainstream media and Democrats are up in arms. With Schumer, it’s radio silence at best and tacit defense at worst. The reality of Schumer’s comments is that they were intended to start this firestorm. He wanted the attention. He wanted Republicans to react and get him as much publicity as possible. As our EIC noted and Tweeted:
Blowback has been relatively harsh from Republicans. Ted Cruz is coming after his fellow Senator from his chamber while House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Biggs is coming after Schumer from the lower chamber. And while many Republicans on social media have called for harsher repercussions, including forcing Schumer out of office, the options to punish him are limited. The way the media and the left are handling Schumer shines yet another spotlight on the hypocrisy and double standards present in America. Mitt Romney is protecting Joe Biden from a Burisma investigation, not himself
Posted: 05 Mar 2020 03:11 PM PST It sounds like a juicy story. Senator Mitt Romney, the biggest Republican punching bag for Trump-supporting conservatives, has connections to Burisma! A former adviser joined their board months after Hunter Biden left! Romney’s kids or other family members may be involved! He’s covering up for himself because he’s going to get busted along with Biden, Pelosi, and anyone else we don’t like! It’s wonderful! Except, that’s not the real story. Many of us want it to be the story because he’s now signalling he may try to block Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chair Ron Johnson from starting a new probe into Burisma. We WANT Romney to show that he is a self-serving, corrupt politician and this Burisma cover-up narrative plays to our desires.
Romney isn’t planning to shield Burisma to protect his family, advisers, or himself. He’s shielding Burisma to protect Hunter (and by proxy, Joe) Biden because Romney believes Biden is the best shot the Democrats have of defeating President Trump. That’s it. There’s no conspiracy here, at least not one worth pursuing. We must not, as conservatives, allow our zeal for ending Romney’s political career cloud our judgment and hide the bigger picture. It’s already bad enough that he’s an operative for the Democratic Party and a closet supporter of Joe Biden. If Biden is the nominee when the general election comes around, Romney will come out of the closet and formally endorse him. By no means am I suggesting there are no connections between Romney and Burisma. There clearly are. But if nobody associated with Romney had ever been to Ukraine or heard of Burisma, his actions during impeachment and now would be absolutely the same. It’s not a motivating factor for him. All he sees is the downfall of the man he hates, the man won what Romney thought was rightfully his. If Romney’s motives were self-protection or protection for his family, he would not have voted in favor of removing the President during the Senate impeachment trial. People who are hiding something don’t draw more attention to it. No, Romney’s goals for voting in favor of impeachment are the same goals he has now if he blocks the investigation into Burisma. He hates President Trump and will do whatever he can to make Biden the next occupant of the Oval Office. There is plenty for us to attack about Romney. If he blocks an investigation into Burisma, it will be a perfect opportunity to continue to ask the question, “What are Democrats (and Romney) hiding about Joe Biden and Ukrainian corruption?” That’s the story here. Conflating his loose attachments to Burisma with his actions to block the investigation actually harms the proper narrative that many, many people are protecting Biden, including our least favorite “Republican” Senator. The Swamp, the Deep State, and the DNC all want us to look away from Burisma. There’s absolutely no need to bump Romney into the picture when all attention should be placed on Biden himself. Romney’s a side story. Biden is the real target here. I’m not averse to conspiracy theories, but claiming Romney is covering up his connections to Burisma is counterproductive. Oftentimes, the real answer is the simplest one. He hates President Trump and will block any attempts to take down Joe Biden. Andy Biggs introduces resolution condemning Chuck Schumer over SCOTUS remarks
Posted: 05 Mar 2020 01:54 PM PST Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is lucky Capitol Hill is generally more genteel than other groups in the way they handle internal challenges. His unhinged comments at an abortion rally in front of the Supreme Court yesterday were so troubling, one might expect him to be fired if he had a real job. But he’s a Senator, so the best we can expect until his next election is a sharp rebuke from Congress or the Senate, and that’s exactly what House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Biggs brought forth today. The conservative Congressman wants Congress to rebuke the Senator for making threats directed specifically at Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh regarding the case of the new Louisiana abortion law. It would require those performing abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital, thereby assuring women who seek abortions will have proper medical care through the procedure as well as a safety net should the procedure go wrong. Biggs also Tweeted a video of his concerns about the Senator’s remarks.
The outrage from the right is justified and unavoidable; one cannot make threats over policies or Supreme Court rulings, not even a sitting Senator. But this wasn’t just a random rant by Schumer. This was a calculated opening blow that telegraphs the Democrats’ election strategy. They’re going to make abortion access one of their top selling points, claiming President Trump will put in more Supreme Court Justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade unless he’s voted out of office. Even though it’s all a trap, conservatives have no choice but to take the bait. Abortion is not currently a wining issue for Republicans despite the Democrats’ attempts to push abortion “access” to the far left extremes that most Americans do not want. Nevertheless, doing or saying nothing about Schumer’s threat would not have behooved conservatives even though springing his trap doesn’t help them either. This is why it’s so important for pro-lifers to become more aggressive—in a peaceful and non-violent manner—as we educate the masses about the realities of abortion. We have the truth on our side, but it’s a truth that most Americans simply don’t want to hear. The consensus in the murky middle is accepting the status quo. They generally do not want to overturn Roe v. Wade but they also do not want laws that allow for unrestricted abortions-on-demand. The time may come in the future when it’s possible to vote Chuck Schumer out of office. In the meantime, calling him out for his irresponsible rhetoric, as Andy Biggs and other conservatives are doing, is the best best punishment we have for the Senator. We won’t survive the socialist onslaught without core principles set in liberty

The turmoil on the left clouds the fact that they have a core set of principles. It’s just a matter of whether they are overt or covert socialists. The larger point is that they have pushed the Overton Window so far to the left that it’s about to fall off of a cliff. Meanwhile, we on the pro-liberty right are just offering ‘goulash’, a mishmash of ad hoc policies without any real guiding principles. Mr. Deace made the point that history is won by the side with strong convictions. For all of their faults, the nation’s socialist left at least has these convictions. They have never worked and will never work, but that’s part of the threat. History has shown there is nothing more dangerous than ideologues who will use any means necessary to maintain their power and get their non-functional monstrosity to work. Such people have oppressed nations, thrown thousands into mental institutions and murdered millions to force collectivism to down our throats. Pro-liberty principles are superior to collectivist control schemesWhile we on the pro-liberty right have a strong set of beliefs, we tend to keep them in the background. We tend to focus on day-to-day practical matters instead of liberty and limited government. Such guiding principles inform as to who we are, but we have been bullied by the left into silence on the subject. The authoritarian left can fill in whatever they want in the resulting vacuum, to the point of claiming they favor liberty with the false label of ‘liberal’. We know that collectivist control is the death of liberty, but when we are silent on the subject, the left can fill in the blanks with whatever they want. The same holds true for their supposed advocacy of ‘progress’ with their other false label ‘progressive’. Some leftists have the false notion that their ideas are less than 200 years old, when they are really 2,400 years old. Thus they can pretend to be new ideas for the furtherance of ‘progress’. Schumer’s Supreme Slander, Violence & Silence, Bernie vs. Biden

by Gary Bauer, Contributing Author: Schumer’s Supreme Slander Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer proved that outside of the Supreme Court yesterday. Here’s what he said: “I want to tell you, Gorsuch. I want to tell you, Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price! You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions [to protect life].” This was too much for the American Bar Association, which is dominated by the left. The ABA blasted Schumer for “threatening two sitting justices of the U.S. Supreme Court over their upcoming votes in a pending case.” The statement added that such threats “challenge the independence of the judiciary” and are “never acceptable.” Chief Justice John Roberts, who has been shifting toward the center-left, was so concerned about Schumer’s “threatening statements” that he issued a very rare public rebuke, denouncing Schumer’s comments as “inappropriate” and “dangerous.” Roberts is right. It was a very dangerous moment. The demonstrators outside the court were already acting like a mob before Schumer’s incendiary remarks. In recent years, Supreme Court justices have been assigned additional security. No doubt you recall just how contentious Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation process was, largely because of outrageous rhetoric like Schumer just used. Leftist mobs roamed the streets of Washington and physically attacked Kavanaugh’s supporters. Christian women who went to Capitol Hill to pray during the hearings were assaulted. After his confirmation, protestors attempted to storm the court itself. Schumer and his staff did not back down yesterday. They doubled down and lied, suggesting that Schumer was referring to Republican senators, even though he specifically named two justices and warned that they would “pay the price.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell condemned Schumer’s comments this morning on the Senate floor. McConnell recounted the growing history of left-wing violence, including the mass assassination attempt that nearly killed Rep. Steve Scalise. When Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Ilhan Omar or Rashida Tlaib say something that is completely beyond the pale, the left and its media allies defend them by suggesting they are young and inexperienced. You can’t say that about Schumer. He is a senior leader of the Democrat Party and the leader of Senate Democrats. His staff is made up of seasoned professionals. On the Senate floor today, Schumer expressed regret over his choice of words. But according to Reuters, he “seemed to stop short of a full apology.” Violent & Silence When someone is operated on to remove a cancerous tumor, that is not an act of violence. It is an act of mercy to save a person’s life. Abortion is always an act of violence involving the use of caustic chemicals or piercing and cutting instruments to destroy a human being when it is most defenseless. Leftists rail against gun ownership. But the pro-abortion feminist movement justifies far more taking of innocent human life than those killed through “gun violence” every year. Meanwhile, the left’s silence is deafening. To their credit, ABC and CBS did report on Schumer’s extraordinary outburst. But NBC did not say one word. Most Democrat politicians are silent too. Will any reporter today demand that Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders condemn Schumer’s rhetoric? I’m not holding my breath. It’s Bernie vs. Biden Aides say Warren spoke to both Sanders and Biden yesterday, but she is not expected to announce an endorsement any time soon. While all the attention lately has been on the Democrat primary and the fired-up progressive base that wants to defeat Donald Trump, it’s also true that the conservative populist base wants Trump re-elected, and it’s on fire too. We noted yesterday that President Trump received more votes in the uncontested Republican presidential primary in Texas than the top four Democrats won combined in their contest. It was the same in Alabama and Utah. In North Carolina, Trump got more votes than Sanders, Bloomberg, Warren and Buttigieg combined. In Tennessee, Trump won more votes than Biden and Sanders combined. What you may not realize is that such results are not uncommon, and the president has been shattering records across the country. For example, in New Hampshire, Trump got more votes than any previous president, including popular incumbents like Barack Obama (2012), George W. Bush (2004) and Ronald Reagan (1984). The results are similar in other states, including Iowa. In fact, the progressives at Rolling Stone are panicking, warning, “Trump is turning people out in historic numbers right now. What We Don’t Know About The Coronavirus Is What Scares Us

by Dr. Victor Davis Hanson: The recent spread of the coronavirus is causing a global panic. Our shared terror arises not so much from the death toll of the new flu-like disease — more than 3,000 people have died worldwide — but from what we don’t know about it. Experts at least agree that the virus originated in China. But Beijing’s authoritarian government hid information about its origins, spread, and severity for weeks. Such duplicity only fanned the fears of a global plague — a hysteria not seen since the groundless fears of a Y2K global computer meltdown in the year 2000, or the political feeding frenzy during the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. Wild speculation followed that the coronavirus was a virulent or mutated superbug. Had it arisen naturally or escaped from a nearby military lab? Did it originate from a sick lab animal? A conspiracy theory arose that it was a manufactured virus that had escaped from scientists’ botched efforts to create either a vaccine or a biological weapon. Is the outbreak an indication that China’s scientists are well behind their Western peers, at least in the areas of virology and bacteriology? Or is the problem that Chinese culture still features outdated traditions such as open-air “wet markets”? Unfounded rumors spread that the virus may have originated in one of these markets, where exotic mammals such as bats and pangolins are still sold for human consumption. For all China’s gleaming high-speed-rail lines and new airports, hundreds of millions of Chinese still live in places with suspect food safety and waste disposal — the historic incubators of epidemics. The method of the contagion has been perplexing to experts. Why is the mortality rate for infected patients in Iran roughly double that of patients in countries such as South Korea, Italy, and Japan? Why have almost no children under ten died from the infection? Are governments unable (or unwilling) to count the infected, given the similarities in symptoms between the coronavirus and various colds and flus? Does such uncertainty suggest that we are undercounting the number of people sickened or killed by coronavirus? Or are we instead overestimating its dangers? Thousands of patients may have already recovered from mild cases — and perhaps never knew they were sick in the first place. Evidence suggests that only about 2 percent of patients will die after infection. As in the case of other viral illness, the unfortunate victims are mostly elderly people with existing illnesses. Does that pattern suggest the coronavirus may be more like annual influenza outbreaks — deadly to thousands but hardly the stuff to shut down a global economy? The common theme of history’s great plagues — Athens in 430 B.C., Constantinople in 541, and the Black Plague of 1347— was that pre-industrial conditions of filth and ignorance helped spread what were usually bacterial diseases transmitted by lice, fleas, and rodents. Real plagues can certainly change history. A stricken Athens afterwards lacked the power to defeat Sparta in the Peloponnesian War. The Byzantine emperor Justinian would never finish his half-completed dreams of a new reunited Rome. The Black Plague helped usher in the end of the Middle Ages. Great literature — from Thucydides, Procopius, Boccaccio, and Camus — often chronicled the human suffering, and especially the hysteria, that follows from the breakdown of civilized norms. History also reminds us that nature remains unforgiving. We may live in the age of the Internet, smartphones, and jet travel, but viruses are indifferent to so-called human progress. Modern life squeezes millions into cities as never before. Jet travel, with its crowded planes and airports, can spread diseases from continent to continent in hours. Globalization is a two-edged sword. It may enrich billions of people, but the leveling effects of instant communication and travel can spread disease at a speed undreamed of in the past. The dissemination of sophisticated Western science to non-Western societies that lack advanced research centers may be increasingly suicidal. Borders are now considered passé in the age of globalization. But their enforcement reminds us that not all nations are alike. All sovereign peoples should have the right to take measures for their own safety well beyond the purview of the transnational elites. Finally, is it wise or safe to allow hundreds of thousands of homeless to live crowded among filth, vermin, and squalor on the sidewalks of America’s major cities? (Nancy, are you listening?) The coronavirus threat and the unfounded hysteria that has accompanied it will pass. But the specter of a pandemic offers a timely warning to remember that we are not necessarily any more immune from volatile nature — and humankind’s paranoid response to it — than were the ancients. Chief Justice Roberts Blasts Schumer For ‘Threatening’ Gorsuch, Kavanaugh

by Ryan Saavedra: Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts ripped Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Wednesday afternoon for threatening Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh earlier in the day. “This morning, Senator Schumer spoke at a rally in front of the Supreme Court while a case was being argued inside,” Roberts said in a statement. “Senator Schumer referred to two Members of the Court by name and said he wanted to tell them that ‘You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You will not know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.’” “Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous,” Roberts continued. “All Members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.” Democrat Jonathan Turley, Constitutional Law Professor at George Washington University, also slammed Schumer for his remarks, saying that he sounded like a “stalker.” “Schumer’s threat to the Court that ‘you will pay the price’ is a direct attack on the integrity of our courts,” Turley wrote “I criticized Trump for his reckless comments about the courts. Where is the chorus of condemnation of Schumer? Schumer sounded more like a stalker than a statesman.”
“Inside the walls of this court, the Supreme Court is hearing arguments, as you know, for the first major abortion rights cases since Justice Kavanaugh and Justice Gorsuch came to the bench,” Schumer said. “We know what’s at stake. Over the last three years, women’s reproductive rights have come under attack in a way we haven’t seen in modern history.” “Republican legislatures are waging a war on women, all women, and they’re taking away fundamental rights,” Schumer continued. “I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. Biden was trying to recite the preamble to the Declaration of Independence at a campaign event in Houston on Monday. He launched into a quote saying, “We hold these truths to be self-evident…” But he concluded with: “All men and women created by, go– you know — you know the thing. You know how we talk about it, or we the people.” Biden purposely omitted “their Creator,” Limbaugh said, because as a Democrat he cannot mention God. “We hold these truths to be self-evident. All men endowed by their Creator — that’s what he couldn’t say,” Limbaugh said. “Democrats can’t acknowledge God. This is where Plugs, to me, is showing signs of being mentally with it. Plugs didn’t forget God. What Plugs realized is he can’t mention God as a Democrat. God is the ecology. God is climate change. You can’t mention God. This is a party — God gets booed at the Democrat convention.” Limbaugh was referencing the 2012 Democratic National Convention, when mention of God was removed from the party platform. “Have you forgotten? They remove God. And it’s all about abortion. It’s all about abortion,” Limbaugh said. “So Plugs (Biden) knows he can’t mention Creator. So he’s trying to [re]cite — and Plugs is old enough when the Democrats used to be able to mention God. They used to be able to go to church. They used to be able to talk about God. They used to be able to talk about Jesus Christ. They used to be able to incorporate God in their politics. They can’t anymore.” Limbaugh continued: “Don’t tell me these people are not a bunch of radical leftists. There’s nothing moderate or mainstream about ’em. And Plugs here had his wits about him enough to realize that if he mentioned Creator or God, he would be in deep doo-doo on the eve of Super Tuesday. So he caught himself. Now, he sounds stupid, but I think in this case Plugs’ mental acuity is actually on display. “He’s trying to tell them we know it’s God, I can’t say God, Creator, you know what I’m talking about, you know the thing, you know it, I can’t say it. That’s what he’s saying to ’em. Don’t doubt me on this, folks. He didn’t forget God. He didn’t forget endowed by Creator. He knows that. He’s known that. I agree with @amyklobuchar: We need candidate who cares about all Americans and will restore decency, dignity to the office. There is a reason Trump fears @JoeBiden and roots for Bernie. #Biden2020.” Biden campaign rapid response director Andrew Bates essentially rejected the endorsement from Comey, who remains polarizing within the Democratic Party, despite his outspoken criticism of Trump. “Yes, customer service? Mob Boss Schumer Threatens Justices

by Thomas Gallatin: Standing in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building at a pro-abortion rally, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gave a speech. He turned and pointed to the Court building, bloviating, “I want to tell you [Justice Neil] Gorsuch, I want to tell you [Justice Brett] Kavanaugh: You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” The reason the pro-abortion protesters had gathered was to voice their opposition to a case before SCOTUS — a challenge to a Louisiana law requiring that any physician performing abortions have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 minutes of the abortion facility. While there is nothing unusual about various groups rallying for their cause outside the Supreme Court, what was unusual and unprecedented was Schumer’s pointed threats directed at Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. In fact, Schumer’s threats against members of the Court were so beyond the pale that Chief Justice John Roberts took the unusual action of issuing a public rebuke of the senator, stating in part, “Justices know that criticism comes with the territory, but threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous. All members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter.” Following Roberts’s rebuke, however, Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman essentially doubled down and defended Schumer’s threat by ridiculously asserting, “Sen. Schumer’s comments were a reference to the political price Senate Republicans will pay for putting these justices on the court.” In fact, Goodman’s blatant mischaracterization of Schumer’s threats was so obviously false that even Leftmedia outlet CNN called it false. Furthermore, Goodman falsely equivocated Schumer’s threats with President Donald Trump’s recent criticism of Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, while blasting Roberts as biased for not calling out Trump. The truth is Roberts has opposed Trump for his criticism of the judiciary in the past, but, far more significantly, Trump has never issued any threat toward a member of any court. On Wednesday evening, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) excoriated Schumer: “I would call on Schumer to apologize, but we all know he has no shame. So tomorrow I will introduce a motion to censure Schumer for his pathetic attempt at intimidation of [the] Supreme Court.” But it’s not only Republicans criticizing Schumer; Democrats, advisers, law professors, and pundits piled on, rebuking the Democrat leader for his excess. Faced with wagons that were not circled around him, Schumer finally apologized this morning. “I should not have used the words I used,” Schumer said. “They didn’t come out the way I intended to.” In any case, Schumer’s problem is that he views SCOTUS as the Left has for years — as the judicial arm of the DNC. Therefore, whenever the Court fails to rubber-stamp the Democrats’ leftist agenda, the Left falsely attacks the Court as supposedly acting in bias toward Republicans rather than the Constitution. Schumer’s aim was clearly to intimidate the justices into siding with leftist activists’ “living constitution” nonsense rather than the constitutionalists’ approach of using the plain language of the law. Those who use threats and intimidation to defend their position reveal that they have little rationale to support their argument. Fake News Media Can’t Stop Us!

We struggled to find a recording studio willing to record the song. Then we struggled to find singers willing to sing backup on the song. I sent out a clarion call, and Trump-loving singers came to the Maryland recording session from Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Florida. We proudly named them the Deplorables Choir. The recording session was awesome. Though meeting for the first time, it felt like a family reunion, with everyone in one accord. My wife Mary and I, along with members of the Deplorables Choir, flew to California to shoot the music video. We sent out a call for Trump-supporters to be extras in the music video. Locals were thrilled to participate because there are few safe spaces in California to openly support Trump. Again, the atmosphere at the sound stage felt like a family gathering. For weeks, Mary and I worked with a company to write a press release to distribute it to hundreds of media outlets, announcing the release of the song and music video. I thought it was odd that we had not received a single inquiry. Then, three days before our big release date, I received an email from the company saying they had not sent out our press release. Here is an excerpt from their email. Clearly, this is simply another attempt to silence our voices to undermine the re-election of our awesome president. Trump-supporters are fighting the same media bias and blackout on social media. I have thousands of followers, and sometimes only 250 people see my posts and tweets. But be of good cheer, folks. We defeated and bypassed fake news media in the past, and we will do it again. In 2009, fake news media strategically staged a media blackout of the Tea Party movement’s rally in Washington, D.C. protesting Obamacare. I never saw a single word about the upcoming protest rally in the mainstream media. And yet, 1.7 million patriots showed up. I was touring on the Tea Party Express. When our tour bus pulled up to the rally, I could hardly believe my eyes. How in the world did they pull off getting so many people to spend money on airfare, hotels, and other travel expenses without any promotion by mainstream media? It was an amazing achievement by grassroots patriots working together. Chairman of Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Jenny Beth Martin introduced me to sing my “American Tea Party Anthem.” Walking on stage to perform for a live audience of over a million was thrilling. Before I began singing, I proclaimed, “Hello, my fellow patriots! I am not an African-American! I am Lloyd Marcus, AMERICAN-N-N!” The sea of patriots erupted into thunderous applause.
The rally was seen on national TV on C-SPAN. It was shocking to receive hate-emails from progressives calling me a “stupid n—–.” One wacko even threatened to find my address to kill me. Why were progressives so enraged because I proclaimed myself an unhyphenated American? Fake news media would have you believe that Tea Partiers are extreme white supremacist lawbreakers. In truth, we instinctively respect the law, our fellow Americans, and private and public property. We left the site of our 1.7-million rally cleaner than we found it. I witnessed patriots picking up trash. To counter our powerful grassroots Tea Party movement, Democrats launched their counterfeit and paid-for Occupy Wall Street movement, where attendees were mugged and even raped. Infected with entitlement mindsets, OWS minions left mountains of trash and destroyed property. Occupy Wall Street minions dumped a bucket of human urine and feces in the lobby of an office building. Tea Partiers would never behave in such crazy and disrespectful ways. Fake news media continue to try to hide our light of freedom and truth under a bushel. Rage Against the Machine

But that isn’t even the entirety of the Machine’s anti-democratic agenda. “The establishment narrative warfare against [Representative Tulsi] Gabbard’s campaign dwarfs anything we’ve seen against Sanders,” writes Caitlin Johnstone on her popular blog, “and the loathing and dismissal they’ve been able to generate have severely hamstrung her run.” No kidding. But why would the Machine prefer Sanders over Gabbard? “It turns out that a presidential candidate can get away with talking about economic justice and plutocracy when it comes to domestic policy,” Ms. Johnstone goes on, “and some light dissent on matters of foreign policy will be tolerated, but aggressively attacking the heart of the actual bipartisan foreign policy consensus will get you shut down, smeared and shunned like nothing else.” This pro-war, anti-Tulsi agenda was seen right after SuperTuesday. You see, Representative Gabbard got a delegate, from American Samoa (where Michael Bloomberg’s vast fortune also nabbed a delegate). And, by the rules that have been followed so far, a delegate gets you onto the big debate stage. But almost immediately, word from the Democratic National Committee hit the Twittersphere: “We have two more debates — of course the threshold will go up. By the time we have the March debate, almost 2,000 delegates will be allocated. The threshold will reflect where we are in the race, as it always has.” The DNC — the Machine — is rewriting the rules. Tulsi must not speak. Even if her competence and ecumenical appeal might actually save the Democratic Party, were her name to replace Biden and Sanders in the second or third voting round of a contested convention. What You Need to Know About Louisiana’s Pro-Life Law as Supreme Court Decides Its Fate

by Rob Bluey: Another abortion case is before the Supreme Court. The high court heard oral arguments Wednesday in June Medical Services v. Russo, involving a Louisiana law requiring that doctors who perform abortions at clinics must have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The Daily Signal’s Rob Bluey breaks down the case with Louisiana Attorney General Jeffrey Landry and Louisiana Solicitor General Liz Murrill, who argued it. Rob Bluey: On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case from Louisiana about a law requiring abortionists to have admitting privileges at local hospitals. You argued that abortion clinics do not have standing to sue on behalf of patients, so there’s a lot at stake in this case. Let’s begin with today’s arguments. First, tell us what it was like to be in the court and what you told the justices. Liz Murrill: It’s always pretty exciting to be in the court and to argue a case at the Supreme Court. It’s stressful, [but] it’s exciting at the same time. This was a great case for us to have an opportunity to talk to the justices about the reality of the situation in our state and the ability to regulate abortion. The case law on this promised that we could regulate abortion, that we could regulate clinics and doctors, and we could set standards. And that’s what we’re doing. And so I think it was a good opportunity to show them that when we do that, we need some leeway to uphold our regulations. Bluey: Can we go back to where it all began? Tell our listeners how this started, why Louisiana decided to go down this path, and what it actually means for residents in your state. Jeff Landry: First of all, I think it’s important to recognize that this case has a lot of important nuances to it. No. 1, it’s about sovereignty. That’s important to remember because it’s about state sovereignty. When you say, “Where did the case begin?” Of course … the bill was authored by a black Democrat female, [state] Rep. Katrina Jackson, who’s now a state senator. So that’s an interesting part to it. And of course then it became law, and … we’ve been arguing it now for about five years as it made its way through the courts. But this is a case that basically says, is the power to regulate health care a state’s right or a federal right? … Because that’s what this case is about because in Louisiana, what we did was we just folded abortion clinics into the state’s regulatory environment. We didn’t say, “We’re going to pick on the abortion industry.” No, we just said, “Listen, … patients who go to these types of clinics deserve the same types of protections as others who go into other clinics very similar to that.” So this, to me, is a commonsense case. It should be easy, right? The fact that we have to argue this tells you how broken the system is. Bluey: Why is it important for abortionists to have these admitting privileges at local hospitals? And tell us, is it really hard for them to get? Is this a burden that’s placed upon them? Landry: I’ll let Liz follow up with this, but that’s a great question that I’ve been wanting someone to ask. Let me ask it instead of giving you an answer, let me give you a question. Do you think that admitting privileges are important? Bluey: I would think so, yes. Landry: Right, exactly. So, yes, it’s important. You got to cast aside the fact that there are abortions going on inside these clinics and focus on the fact that there are invasive procedures going on. At the end of the day, those people, those patients, those women, those girls deserve the same level of protection as anyone else going through similar type procedures. Murrill: Yeah, I think one of the narratives that I’ve had to fight against for months, not just for months, for years … in this case is just the presumption, which I think is certainly incorrect, that abortion is categorically safe. But to the point about admitting privileges, generally we require that of doctors in our state who perform anything from cataract surgery to an appendix, a wide variety of procedures if they are working at an ambulatory surgery center. So I think, if I was having a conversation with someone about a doctor who did 3,000 laparoscopic surgeries every year, then you probably wouldn’t think that it was stupid to have admitting privileges. If somebody’s going to put you in a position where you might have a chance at a lot of different serious complications, you would think that was a pretty valuable thing. You would at least have some competence that your doctor was a little more credentialed because his peers have credentialed them. Bluey: Certainly, if you’re a patient, I would think that you would almost have that expectation. Right? Landry: I’ll tell you, I can remember having a conversation with a physician friend of mine who has small procedures done in his office, and he didn’t know about this case, had no idea this case was going on. I just went in one day, he was doing a bunch of paperwork, and I was asking him what was going on, and he said, “Oh, no.” He said, “The insurance carrier, a major insurance in Louisiana, is now requiring me to have admitting privileges in order to continue to see patients with those policies.” Now, step back for a minute. This is not the government. This is private insurance [that] is recognizing that admitting privileges are important for procedures that he’s doing, not in an ambulatory center, just in his office. So I think it speaks volumes that the level of health care is increased when doctors have admitting privileges to hospitals. It’s safer for the patient. And it also speaks volumes for the credentials of the doctor. Murrill: Yeah. And it helps ensure accountability. So I think doctors, if they’re being honest, they will acknowledge that it is a proxy for competency … if you cannot get privileges at a hospital. We did show that the hospitals are not discriminating against these doctors solely on the basis of the fact that they do abortions. They’ve had privileges for decades while they … had an abortion practice. So I just think that part of it is a false claim. But if you ask anybody, I think they think it’s a proxy for competency, and it provides accountability because these doctors now have to answer to their peers. And if they start a procedure, they shouldn’t start something they can’t finish. It’s pretty basic. I don’t think that any doctor should be able to start a procedure that has known complications and not be able to manage the routine complications that can occur. It’s just irresponsible. And that’s not the standard of care anywhere, I don’t think. Bluey: I believe it was Justice Samuel Alito who asked the question in the oral arguments about whether or not there was a burden that these abortion doctors would have to go through to get these privileges. From the sounds of it, there doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult for them to take this step. What can you tell us about that? Landry: It’d be interesting to know if Justice [Elena] Kagan and [Justice Sonia] Sotomayor would go to a clinic … and have a procedure performed under which a doctor didn’t have admitting privileges to the hospital. At what level of care would they appreciate, as well. Bluey: There was a case decided in 2016 involving a Texas law, which was similar. Back to what you were saying, Mr. Attorney General, at the beginning about states being able to determine their own policies. What can you tell us about that case and how that may factor into your law? Landry: Well, No. 1, it wasn’t a similar case. That’s the confusing part. Bluey: Thanks for clarifying. Landry: Exactly. Amazingly, mainstream media gets it wrong. I mean, really? They report the truth 100% of the time, of course, but it’s exactly the point. This is not a similar case. It is not a similar law. We have different facts. In Texas, and I’ll kind of boil it down … Liz, she’s the Einstein of law, so she can tell you all the little-bitty nuances. I’m a little country boy from small town Louisiana, so I’ll break it to you the way I understand it. It’s simple. In Texas, they went out and specifically pointed to abortion clinics and said, “We are now going to make doctors there have admitting privileges.” In Louisiana, for a while, doctors in clinics, similar to abortion clinics, everywhere across Louisiana, were required to have admitting privileges. The legislature simply said, “We’re now going to fold you into our regulatory scheme.” See, that’s a state sovereignty. That’s a state’s rights issue. And that’s why I think this case has tremendous implications across a wide variety of constitutional law. Bluey: It certainly does. Liz, did you want to add anything on that? Murrill: I certainly have tried to, and I don’t know that the media cares too much about that issue, I do. Legally I do. I think it matters a lot that our law is … a requirement that we require of other doctors doing other procedures. And in Texas, they didn’t. They were only requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges, and they didn’t require that at ambulatory surgery centers like we do. Their law also had required the the abortion clinics to meet the same physical plant standards as an ambulatory surgery center, which was an expensive proposition. So the effect of it was kind of a double whammy. One piece of it took effect, and the other piece of it took effect, and it had an impact across the state. That’s just not true in our state. That didn’t happen. The argument that they keep making that it’s going to close clinics is wrong. It’s not going to close clinics. And that they can’t get privileges is also wrong. And we have a disturbing history of conduct arising from both the providers and the clinics themselves of noncompliance with the law. So we should be able to regulate. If we can’t regulate against the backdrop that we have, then we really can’t do anything to protect women. And that’s a problem. Bluey: It seems that Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh may hold the key votes in this case, again, based on what media reports are indicating. What questions did they ask at oral arguments? Murrill: They didn’t ask very much of me. They were asking questions of my friends on the other side a little more than they asked questions of me. I got a lot of questions from Justice [Ruth Bader] Ginsburg and Justice Sotomayor and Justice Kagan and Justice [Stephen] Breyer. Bluey: And I want to get to those. Murrill: I did get a question from the chief about whether I believed that a law can have benefits that are different from state to state. And, of course, I think the answer to that is yes, I do. I think it depends on what your regulatory structure is and what the facts on the ground [are]. There seemed to be such a commonsense response to that because people can earn the right to be regulated, and so, of course, it can have benefits in one state that are different from another state. It really depends on what’s happening in your state. Bluey: That’s right. Landry: It’s really why America is unique. It’s why it used to work fantastically. You think about it. If the answer to that was no, then why would we need state legislators? Why not just let Congress make all our laws? That’s not what’s unique about our system of government. It’s not what makes us a peaceful, prosperous nation. We are a union of 50 sovereigns that have the opportunity to experiment, to determine what kind of policies are best fit for a free people. Bluey: Yes. This laboratory of democracy, which makes our country the great country that it is. Now, you mentioned some of the other liberal-leaning justices. What were some of those questions you received from Justice Ginsburg and others? Murrill: One of them is, is an abortion always safe? My answer to that is no. Obviously, it’s not always safe. Just to kind of point back to the Hellerstedt case, the Texas case, Justice Breyer asked my counterpart in Texas, Scott Keller, [who was] at the time was arguing that case, if there is any woman who’s ever been helped by admitting privileges. Just because of the way that case had been litigated, they didn’t have that evidence in their records. So he had to concede that that was not in the record. We do have that evidence in the record, so I can answer that question and say, yes. … To the question of whether it’s safe, there were women who had hysterectomies, punctured uteruses. These are the things that require immediate transfer and attention that is in our record. So I can answer his question and say, no, I don’t think it’s always safe. We know that there are known predictable complications even with doctors who are competent. In a facility that we can’t say where everyone is competent and that is always safe and sanitary, those risks go up dramatically. So certainly, I think that was a question that gave me an opportunity to try and, in my view, clarify the record. Bluey: As I said at the top, [in] this case you also challenged the standing, as I understand it, of those who brought the lawsuit, the abortion clinics. That could have big implications as well if the Supreme Court decides that on those grounds. Tell us what that means, what happened, the facts, and then also what your argument was. Murrill: I’ll tell you a little bit about why we raised it and how it came up. And part of it is simply because when … I started looking at the record in this case and in other cases that were litigating against the same plaintiffs, reading deficiency reports and reading the reports from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners, and just the history of some of the providers’ conduct in our state, I just kept asking myself, “Why are the doctors representing women?” These are health and safety regulations. They protect women. They protect us. That’s true of all health and safety regulations. And so the conflict that was just inherent in that relationship and that situation, these doctors’ interest is in being less regulated and having less oversight. Women have an interest in having safe, sanitary procedures by competent people. So they just are fundamentally at odds. I think it’s wrong to assume that doctors, these doctors, any doctors always know what women want and … that their interests are always going to be aligned. That’s just simply not a correct assumption to ever make. So that’s why we raised it. Bluey: In wrapping up here, I want to ask two final questions. First of all, probably a question you won’t want to give me the answer to because I know nobody wants to make any predictions, but any idea on where the justices might be leaning in here based on the arguments? Landry: First of all, just to kind of go back to the third-party statement, I think it’s important for everyone to recognize that the court interprets standing in a very, very strict manner. And that they basically have, over these cases, carved out kind of an exception for the abortion industry. I think Liz refers to it as like abortion distortion in standing. So … when I see the left starts saying things like, “I think the chief justice may have an off-ramp,” or “The court may have an off-ramp to a case,” it makes me feel good because it makes me think we’re going to win. Of course, trying to determine what the court is going to do is extremely difficult. But certainly if the court ruled that they did not have third-party standing, and they like standing with it, the law would be upheld, and then it would basically start all over as to the other questions that may be an easy route for the court. It was interesting, Justice Breyer seemed a bit agitated. … He made a comment of, “I don’t know why we’re not going to decide this case and these arguments right here.” … Which made me sense that he felt like he was moving up river without a paddle maybe. So it’ll be interesting. Bluey: But, ideally, you would get a ruling on both fronts. On the facts of whether or not the law is constitutional, and also on standing. Or is one preferable over the other? Murrill: Well, just if we were successful on standing, the case would be dismissed. Bluey: OK. Murrill: So they would never get to the merits. If they found that we waived or forfeited that argument, they could potentially talk about it and then say that we forfeited it, and then get to the merits. There’s a number of ways this thing can get sliced or diced. Or they could find that we forfeited the issue, and it may come up in later cases because it’s being litigated in other cases now and get to the merits and really address Hellerstedt and whether a case that has a law that has similar features but is in other ways very distinctly different and operates differently and has a very different set of facts and where states are regulating against a totally different backdrop can be distinguished. Ultimately, in this space, I think this case has always presented a question to the court about … when you look at Hellerstedt and you look at our case, whether they’re going to decide whether they really are a national abortion regulatory review board. Because if they can’t look at our case and see the distinctions and the differences in our case, that’s a problem. The court determines cases and controversies. That means every case will be different. And so the legislature is a policy board. So in my view, this isn’t that complicated. We have cases. We have controversies. Our law is different. Our facts are different. Yes, you can have a different outcome. So that’s what I’m hoping for. Bluey: I appreciate you sorting it out for myself and our listeners. This has been very educational in terms of understanding the case in more depth and the arguments that you made. You also had outside the court, obviously, a lot of the pro-life movement there today to support the efforts of yourselves. What’s the one message for both of you that you’d like to leave our listeners as you walk away from the court today? Landry: One of the messages is I think that people should understand that we are gaining ground. A lot of times, I believe, on the conservative side, [we] think we’re always losing. This is a great example that elections have consequences, right? My ability to get elected as the attorney general with a conservative mindset, headstrong, and making sure that we got great people like Liz Murrill creating a solicitor general’s office; bucking the governor of my state when he wanted to dismiss the case because he said it costs too much money; [taking care of] the budget when he said, “Well, then you’re going to have to pay for it”; working inside; being fiscally responsible. I would say that this case has all the great things that The Heritage Foundation supports, but it shows you that we can win because we can make it all the way up to the Supreme Court. So my message is, “Hey, keep the faith.” Bluey: Liz, any final thoughts? Murrill: [I’m] just very grateful, and I thank all the people that have been out there supporting us and praying for us and feeding us. And it’s been a lot of hard work, and I’m glad to have kind of gotten through it today, but I’m grateful for all the help. Bluey: Well, we appreciate you visiting The Heritage Foundation and talking to The Daily Signal moments after stepping out of the court for the arguments. It is great to see both of you, and we’ll be keeping a close eye on it. Probably a decision sometime in June. Landry: Thank you. Murrill: Thank you. It’s a wonder that she has been charged at all. “DOD linguist charged with giving classified info to Lebanese national with ties to Hezbollah: DOJ,” by Bradford Betz, Fox News, March 4, 2020: Mariam Taha Thompson, 61, who had top-secret government security clearance, was arrested Thursday on the espionage-related allegation at an unidentified U.S. military facility overseas, the Justice Department announced Wednesday. Federal prosecutors accused Thompson, formerly of Rochester, Minn., of turning over information that placed intelligence assets and American military personnel in danger. Prosecutors said that during a six-week period starting in late December, when U.S. airstrikes targeted Iranian-backed forces in Iraq, Thompson repeatedly accessed dozens of files, including the names of human assets, their pictures and information detailing what these sources provided the U.S. government. Prosecutors said that when officials searched her living quarters, they found a handwritten note in Arabic under her mattress with information about DOD computer systems and warning of a DOD target. Prosecutors said she had given the information in the note to a co-conspirator who worked for the Lebanese government and “has apparent connections” to Hezbollah…. Joe Biden Will Be Totally Manipulated

He will serve them with the kind of devotion and compliance that the false prophet in Revelation 13 is going to serve the Antichrist. It’s true that he is a doddering, fumbling, stumbling, blooper-machine. He has no convictions, values, ideals or viewpoint. He is a blank canvas who—not only can be—but yearns to be controlled. He is for whatever his masters are for. He believes in what he is told to believe. That is why I repeat: he is far more dangerous than any man or woman who has ever run for President. The powers behind his campaign are greater than you can possibly imagine. We are talking about unlimited money, unlimited advertising, unlimited access, and unlimited censorship. Consider this: today a liberal blogger tried to run an embarrassing video of Biden, and Twitter immediately took it down. These vast armadas of henchmen, who reside in every power center of America, have just been waiting for a perfect stooge. And, man, did they find him! The television media, print media, social media, Hollywood, the Democrat Party, every leftist billionaire and a host of hidden villains too long to list saw the potential for becoming the puppet-master to the most powerful office in the world. They ordered Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg and Mike Bloomberg out of the race. “GET OUT OF OUR WAY. WE HAVE OUR MAN!” But the most terrifying proof was the look on Bernie Sanders’ face today. He looked contrite, intimidated, and whipped into line. He said that Joe Biden is a decent man and that he will not attack him. Wait. What?! Why the sudden change from lion to pussycat? A monster has been created. A beast has been born that will stop at nothing to trash Trump and squash opposition to their man. Anyone who does not pledge their undying loyalty to Joe Biden has no future in the Democrat party, or in life. The hatred of Trump has just created the vilest coalition in American history—a coalition with one unswerving obsession—to punish Trump for disturbing their vision of a ‘New World Order.’ Here’s what they will try to do: The Left will now speak with one voice. Prepare for the greatest unity you have ever seen in leftist politics. There will be insanely exaggerated claims of Biden’s skills. Before summer, you may hear rumors of Joe walking on water. Virtually every outlet will be singing his praises. His record will be expunged and rewritten. Writers, producers, agents and consultants will stun us with his patriotism, accolades, visions of glory, and heroism. Joe will be taken over. His campaign will be scripted and he will be forbidden to deviate from their instructions. Quit looking at Joe’s weaknesses. This is about marketing. This is about selling an impressionable society a hand-puppet to usher in an era of every conceivable extreme that will pour into our nation like a tsunami. The floodgates of anti-God, anti-Israel, and anti-family policies will open. Electing Donald Trump had better become the unifying force for every believer: because electing Joe Biden is the unifying force of the powers of darkness. If they have their way, there will be no America—not as we have known it. By a miracle, Donald Trump won. God sent him right on time. This mechanism of evil, while formidable, is no match for God’s power. What I am trying to say to everyone who will listen, is that God is putting together another miracle. Perhaps a miracle that will finally rid our nation of these criminals. I do not want anyone to feel despair. What I am trying to awaken is zeal to obey God and bring our nation a great victory—a victory that I believe is the will of God. Can God spare us? Yes, He can. But not if we assume we deserve it or if we stupidly assume that none of what I have written can happen. If we hope to save our nation, we must band together. Army of God! Abortion: Regulate Than Never

But it was out of an unlikely justice’s mouth that the most profound question may have been asked. “How do [we] deal with this?” For Justice Stephen Breyer, even 24 years on the court don’t offer a clear answer. “I have read the briefs. I understand there are good arguments on both sides.” In a country where people have “very strong feelings” about abortion, days like this, he admitted, are difficult. Maybe, some of us thought sitting there in the Supreme Court chamber, because the court shouldn’t be deciding these issues to begin with. “I think, personally, the Court is struggling with the problem of what kind of rule of law do you have in a country that contains both sorts of people,” Breyer said honestly. The people who think abortion is morally wrong — and the people who believe the opposite. It was a surprising moment of candor from the 81-year-old justice. In many ways, it was confirmation of what so many Americans believe: that we should be trying to find legislative solutions on life, not court-created policy. Of course, that’s exactly what the Louisiana legislature tried to do. Now, six years later, they’re having to defend a law that was democratically passed — all because a money-hungry abortion industry can’t spare a cent on the safety of women. The state isn’t asking for much. It isn’t trying to overturn Roe v. Wade or put abortion centers out of business. All Louisiana’s done is treat abortion doctors like medical doctors and require them to have a back-up plan if something goes wrong — which, we know from as recently as March, it does. Nothing about that should be controversial for a business that’s spent the last several years insisting it cares about women. But, it turns out, the abortion industry isn’t willing to put its policies where its mouth is. They’ve gone to great expense, suing every state that tries to bring these “clinics” in line with any other outpatient surgery center. In this case, abortion activists are arguing that hospital admitting privileges are never necessary — despite so many horrifying stories to the contrary. Jeffrey Wall, from the Justice Department, pushed back on the idea that just because botched abortions are rare doesn’t mean precautions aren’t necessary. “The medical director at Hope,” he reminded them, “has said that he has, on occasion, had a patient who develops a problem like a perforated uterus and [must be] admitted into the hospital [to be] treated. Now, granted, we don’t know how often it happens and, Justice Kagan, I’m prepared to concede that it may not happen all that often. I don’t think anybody knows the real rate. But the point is that it does happen. And when it does it’s very serious.” Wall also took aim at the plaintiffs challenging the law. After all, he pointed out, these are abortion activists trying to say they’re arguing on behalf of women when “their interests are not necessarily aligned.” The abortion industry is driven by profit, and women are driven by “health and safety.” In other words, how can abortionists say they’re looking out for women when they’re fighting the laws designed to protect them? It was a powerful argument, one that I hope the Court will take seriously. States ought to have the right to regulate abortion clinics, especially when they’ve proven time and time again how insincerely they take women’s health. Twenty years ago, as a Louisiana legislator, I heard one shocking testimony after another of women who’d been treated with rusty, blood-encrusted instruments. I listened to the employees talk about doctors roughing up women and then refusing to call 911. It’s why a young Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) and I worked so hard to pass the first abortion clinic regulations in the country — to stop these doctors from operating in filthy, disgusting conditions. If they won’t hold themselves accountable, then it’s up to this Court to decide if anyone can. How the Administrative State Defied Trump to Cause a Coronavirus Crisis

by Daniel Greenfield: Two months after the outbreak of the coronavirus, #TrumpVirus began trending on Twitter. Why? Because it’s the only chance that the Democrats have of winning back the White House in 2020. Saddled with broken primaries whose nominee, after a possible brokered convention, will either be a Socialist who admires Communists, a senile lecher who admires young girls, or a billionaire who admires power, the coronavirus is a much more effective candidate than Sanders, Biden, or Bloomberg. #TrumpVirus follows in the footsteps of #TrumpHurricane which attempted to blame a natural disaster and local corruption in Puerto Rico on President Trump. And that just dusted off the smears and slanders of Hurricane Katrina and substituted Puerto Ricans for black people and Trump for Bush. Not to mention the CDC for FEMA. The truth about disaster relief and pandemic management is that it hasn’t changed much between administrations. The Bush administration dealt with SARS in much the same way that the Obama administration addressed swine flu. And the Trump administration is doing most of the same things. That’s because the actual decisions are being made by bureaucrats based on existing protocols. The best example of this was the decision to fly back infected American passengers from the Diamond Princess. This fateful decision helped spread the virus inside the United States. President Trump had been told that nobody with the coronavirus would be flown to America. The State Department decided to do it anyway without telling him and only made the announcement shortly after the planes landed in the United States. According to the Washington Post, as unfriendly an outlet to the administration as there is, “Trump has since had several calls with top White House officials to say he should have been told, that it should have been his decision and that he did not agree with the decision that was made.” Who in the State Department actually made the decision? That’s a very good question. According to a State Department briefing, the missions were carried out by the Directorate of Operational Medicine within the Bureau of Medical Services. You might think that sounds like it would be part of HHS or NIH, but the Bureau of Medical Services is actually an arm of the State Department. The Directorate of Operational Medicine is a part of the Bureau assigned to deal with crisis response with a $250 million portfolio and a lot of employees that almost no one outside D.C. ever heard of. At least unless you remember an event at which Barack Obama honored Dr. William Walters, the head of the Directorate, for evacuating Ebola patients to the United States. “Now, remember, the decision to move Kent back to the United States was controversial. Some worried about bringing the disease to our shores. But what folks like William knew was that we had to make the decisions based not on fear, but on science,” Obama said. By “some”, Obama meant, among others, Trump, who had been a strong critic of the move. Despite Obama’s end-zone dance, the State Department had badly botched the Ebola evacuations. Under Bush, the CDC had prepped an evacuation aircraft for flying out contagious Americans. The Obama administration shelved the gear because of the cost, and then failed to make use of it. The evacuation process led to the same infighting between the State Department and the CDC as now. Dr. William Walters is still on duty. In 2017, Walters was boasting of prepping more Ebola evacuations even over President Trump’s opposition to the practice. And he was once again at the wheel now. “The question was simply this: Are these evacuees?” Walters explained the decision to evacuate coronavirus patients to the United States. “And do we follow our protocol? And the answer to that was yes on both accounts.” Consulting President Trump was not part of the protocol even on a major national security issue. In a Congressional briefing, Walters boasted that, “the Department executed the largest non-military evacuation of U.S. citizens in its history. The safe and efficient evacuation of 1,174 people from Wuhan, China and people onboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan is a testament to the agility, proficiency, and dedication of our workforce to accomplishing our core mission – advancing the interests of the American people.” And the triumph of the administrative state and its bureaucratic protocols over the President. At a State Department briefing, Walters stated that, “The chief of mission, right, through the U.S. embassy, is ultimately the head of all executive branch activities.” That is the problem. Right there. Walters got his job in 2011. He’s a relic of the Obama era. That doesn’t mean that his politics are those of his former boss. But this is not about him. It’s about the reality that the White House doesn’t make many of the most vital decisions and doesn’t even know that they’re being made until it’s too late. And what that means, beyond the politics of the moment, is that the people don’t decide. You can vote one way or another and the real decisions that matter will still be made by the head of a directorate that is a subsection of a bureau that you never heard of, but that has a budget in the hundreds of millions, a small army as its disposal, and will follow whatever the protocol is. This is how the country is really run. And that’s the problem. The underlying problem with our government is that it’s too big to control. Voting in an election or even sitting in the Oval Office doesn’t mean you’re in charge. The problem goes beyond the current obsession with the Deep State. The real issue has always been the Deep Industry or the administrative state. If the coronavirus becomes a critical problem in this country, the blame will go back to an obscure arm of the State Department, but it will never be placed there. Whatever happens a year from now, no one outside a small professional class will have ever heard of the Directorate of Operational Medicine. The media will spend all its time bashing President Trump, Pence, assorted cabinet members, and perhaps the CDC, without ever drilling down to the facts, even though it has them at hand. The media’s rule of thumb is that natural disasters and disease outbreaks are always successfully managed by Democrats and mismanaged by Republicans. Katrina and Maria were disasters, but Sandy was a success story. The coronavirus is a catastrophe, but the Ebola virus was brilliantly handed by smart people who are handling the coronavirus response. But it’s different because the guy in the White House is. The truth is that all of these were mismanaged by the same agencies, many of the same people, and by a government infrastructure that excels at drawing up big budget proposals, but is inept at solving problems when they actually emerge, and just follow whatever protocols will cover its collective asses. All the rest is a matter of the uncontrollable, the innate qualities of the storm or the disease, and the story that the media chooses to tell about the disaster in the service of its political agenda. Even during the dying days of impeachment, the media was forced to realize that there was more interest in the coronavirus than there was in its attacks on Trump. The unfortunate decision to evacuate infected people to this country, against President Trump’s explicit wishes, provided the media with the opportunity to combine its attacks on Trump with the coverage of the coronavirus for ratings gold. And if the stock market goes on falling, and the economy declines, it can even pull off a narrative coup. Just as after Katrina and Maria, watch for the outpouring of lies, the claims that New Orleans had reverted to cannibalism and that everyone in Puerto Rico was dead, will be matched and exceeded. There will be a cure for the coronavirus. But there’s no cure for the spread of viral fake news. There is however a cure for the decisions that led to a coronavirus problem in the United States. It’s called the Constitution. America was meant to have a small government under the control of the people, not the bureaucrats. The real disease is bigger than the coronavirus. It’s a fatal illness called big government. Unlike the coronavirus, it has a total mortality rate. No society that has succumbed to it has ever survived. Tweet Shows How Scared Gun-Control Activists are of Women & Minorities Enjoying Their Freedom
Posted: 05 Mar 2020 01:49 PM PST by Frank Miniter: When Igor Volsky, the co-founder and executive director of Guns Down America, a gun-control group “dedicated to building a future with fewer guns,” saw an article in The New York Times claiming that gun manufacturers are suddenly (more on that in a moment) marketing to women and minorities, he showcased his ignorance about America and our freedom in a series of tweets: “1/ Gun makers are softening their image to ‘put a better face in front of people’ & ‘ramp up its appeal to women, children and members of minority groups,’” wrote Volsky. “That’s right: Gun makers are increasingly advertising to WOMEN, CHILDREN & MINORITY COMMUNITIES.” Volsky then tweeted: “2/ Firearm industry realizes that to survive into the future it must ‘broaden its reach beyond the aging white men who have been its core customers’ — and so they’re now trying to sell their products to other demographics. This is incredibly dangerous.” Reading the reaction on Twitter is amusing, as a lot of people called Volsky out on his views. “i am a minority woman and i want to buy a gun because i am unsafe living alone in my neighborhood. i also hunt goat, deer and pig so i might want my own gun one day instead of just compound bow. why is it wrong for me to have a gun?” said someone with the username Eat ule. “One of the most exciting things to watch in the firearms community for the last 20 years is how much more inclusive it’s become. If you are on the fence about buying a gun or learning how to use one, don’t delay any longer! No matter who you are, gun people will welcome you,” tweeted Nathan Lewis. The demographics of gun ownership are changing in America (see, “The Rise of the Woman Gun Owner”), as more people embrace their freedom. Still, it isn’t truthful to say that firearms manufacturers have only recently begun marketing to women. Companies, such as Colt, Savage Arms and Remington, have long run ads designed to specifically appeal to women. An ad for the Savage Model 1907, a semi-automatic pistol made from 1907-1920, for example, showed a photo of a woman in a nightgown firing this Savage pistol. Under the photo was the ad copy: “Her property—her little ones—her own life—she knows are safely protected when she has a Savage Automatic in her home. She knows its ten sure shots are at her command—quick or slow, as she chooses—one to each trigger pull….” This article showcases just a few of the ads gun manufacturers ran over the last century and more as they marketed guns to women. But Volsky didn’t just get this history wrong, he also said selling guns to women and minorities “is incredibly dangerous.” This sounds like both sexism and racism, as Volsky seems to be saying he doesn’t think women and minorities are capable of handling their Second Amendment freedom. A lot of female and minority gun-rights advocates did call Volsky out on his views. Maj Toure, head of Black Guns Matter, said, “Imagine being either so uninformed on the racist roots of gun control or so full of yourself that you would not only think but also believe that melinated Americans owning guns would be incredibly dangerous. I wonder what he thinks of the thousands of melinated law-enforcement officers and military personnel that carry firearms to protect life as well?” I can’t even imagine what Mr. Volsky would say about the rising trend of youth in the shooting sports!” said Barbara Baird, founder and publisher of Women’s Outdoor News. “Gun manufacturers are responding to something called a free market, and noticing that women are appearing at gun counters across this nation, buying firearms—whether it is for shooting sports, personal defense or the tradition of hunting. Women want firearms that fit and function. Sales are not being driven the other way around; women are not responding to the market’s desire to sell to them. FIRST READ: It’s been a week that’s upended American politics
A lot sure has changed over the last week in American politics.
Last Friday – before South Carolina – Bernie Sanders was the clear Democratic frontrunner and was being viewed as the possible/likely nominee.
Also last week, President Trump’s re-election numbers were looking as strong as ever, with a Marquette Law poll showing his approval rating in battleground Wisconsin at 48 percent.

Joe Biden, after his decisive victories in South Carolina and on Super Tuesday, is your Democratic frontrunner.
And Trump’s fortunes sure look gloomier for the coming months, with the spread of coronavirus in the United States – and the health and economic toll it could leave as the president faces re-election eight months from now.
It was 40 years ago when another U.S. president facing re-election – Jimmy Carter – encountered a slow-moving crisis (the Iran hostages) that dominated the full year before Election Day.
And the challenge for Trump is how he deals with a coronavirus story that doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon.

Here’s why the remaining delegates in California aren’t going to change the delegate leader
On Wednesday night, Bernie Sanders told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow that the outstanding delegates in California could still make him the overall delegate winner from Super Tuesday.
“At the end of the count in California, where we have won and will win a whole lot of delegates, I think at the end of the day, we may be a little bit ahead of Biden.”
But here’s the math showing why the remaining California delegates won’t push Sanders into the lead.
Right now, according to the NBC News Decision Desk, Biden holds a 69-delegate lead over Sanders, 595 to 526.
And yes, there are still 151 delegates remaining to be allocated in California, where Sanders is currently ahead of Biden by a 34 percent-to-25 percent margin.
But there are also a total of 104 delegates still to be allocated from the other 13 Super Tuesday states, including 24 in Texas (which Biden won), 11 in Massachusetts (ditto), nine in North Carolina (ditto again) and Alabama (ditto).
What’s more, assuming that Sanders’ lead in California remains 9 points or so, that comes out to – roughly – a 58 percent-to-42 percent delegate split.
And dividing up the remaining 151 California delegates that way gets you: 88 delegates for Sanders, 63 for Biden.
That’s not enough to overcome Biden’s current delegate lead.

2020 VISION: Elizabeth Warren’s big, structural mistakes
Yes, Elizabeth Warren’s supporters can blame sexism for her poor showing in the early 2020 Democratic contests.
And they can also blame a political media that asked more questions about how she’d pay for her health-care plans than they asked of Bernie Sanders.
But you also need to acknowledge the campaign’s big tactical mistakes.
Why did Warren embrace Sanders on Medicare for All – “I’m with Bernie” – when she previously said that the most important thing to do was defend the Affordable Care Act? (NBC’s Benjy Sarlin – below – has more on Warren and Medicare for All.)
Why didn’t she try to draw more distinctions with Sanders – until it was too late? (If she was going to win the nomination, she needed to beat Bernie in Iowa and elsewhere.)
Why did she make purity-in-fundraising such a priority – only to refuse to reject SuperPAC support in her campaign’s final days?
And why did she take that DNA test in the first place?
Warren had a great political message, and she’s a top-notch political athlete.
But she and her campaign weren’t well-served by those strategic decisions.

Dispatches from NBC’s campaign embeds: The fight for Elizabeth Warren’s endorsement and supporters is on, and NBC’s Gary Grumbach has Bernie Sanders’ comments yesterday in Arizona: “Some of you know, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a good friend of mine, dropped out today. And I want to take this opportunity to applaud Sen. Warren for a strong issue-oriented campaign. And tonight, tonight, we invite Sen. Warren supporters into our campaign, because I think they will find many of the issues that Warren campaigned on are exactly the issues that we are fighting for,” Sanders said.
And what comes for Andrew Yang? NBC’s Julia Jester reports it may include New York City: “Andrew Yang is seriously considering a run for New York City mayor, according to a source familiar with Yang’s thinking. Yang has spoken with Mike Bloomberg since he dropped out of the 2020 race yesterday – specifically about a NYC mayoral bid.”

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 60 percent.
60 percent.
That’s the share of Bernie Sanders voters who say they have reservations or are very uncomfortable with Joe Biden, according to merged data from the NBC News/WSJ poll from January and February. Only about four-in-10 say they are enthusiastic (just 7 percent) or comfortable (31 percent) with the former VP.
That’s a far more negative rating than Biden fans have for Sanders. A majority — 55 percent — of Biden backers say they’re enthusiastic or comfortable with Sanders, while 44 percent disagree.
So if you’re wondering why President Trump keeps expressing sympathy for Sanders voters who he says are getting a raw deal… et voila.

Talking policy with Benjy: Elizabeth Warren edition
It’s been driving supporters of Elizabeth Warren crazy for months. Warren embraced Medicare for All, and even filled in crucial details Bernie Sanders left out of his own bill, and was dragged down by attacks from all sides.
Sanders, who “wrote the damn bill,” enjoyed a resurgence that put him on the cusp of the nomination before Biden’s comeback.
Why did this issue work for one, Benjy Sarlin asks, but not the other?
To many Warren supporters, there was a sexist double standard at play in the campaign and the press, one that demanded more and more details from her and only broad talk of revolution from Sanders.
“Everyone else could have different plans,” Democratic strategist Rebecca Katz said, “but she had to explain every single thing on every single plan because she was perceived as ‘The Candidate With Plans.’”
But there were other factors that made her more vulnerable to attacks too. Her voters skewed college-educated and suburban and were less likely to be uninsured and more likely to be nervous about electability concerns. The issue also distracted from the simple winning pitch she rode early in the race: A wealth tax on billionaires to fund education and child care benefits for the upper middle class and lower incomes. Instead, she found herself explaining a health plan whose benefits and tradeoffs were more complicated.
All this put her in a difficult spot politically. She had taken a risky position to win over voters on the left, but they remained attached to Sanders, who was also critical of her plans to finance Medicare for All and split it into two bills. Meanwhile, her competitors to the middle decided her voters were easier to peel off than Sanders’ hardcore base, and relentlessly attacked her on the issue.
