Happy Friday from Washington, where the Trump administration finalizes repeal of the much-hated Obama-era “Clean Water Rule.” Daren Bakst tells why this is great news. Friday, September 13, 2019 Dems Debate Thursday night was the third Democratic primary debate, hosted by ABC News. YouTube From the Left The left focused foremost on Joe Biden and gave mixed reviews. “Former vice president Joe Biden, still the front-runner, needed to show that his shaky debate performance in June was a fluke and that he has the stamina to go for three hours. He started strongly, ably defending the public option and indignantly insisting his plan would protect anyone with cancer… His weakest moment ironically was on Afghanistan and Iraq, where he tried to explain his vote for the use of force in Iraq and suggested he was for a partition of Afghanistan. (His plan was to soft-partition Iraq.) But two hours into the debate, it’s not clear how many voters were watching or picked up on the point.” Jennifer Rubin, Washington Post “The moderator Linsey Davis noted that Biden had told a reporter in 1975 that he did not feel responsible for what people did 300 years ago. ‘As you stand here tonight, what responsibility do you think that Americans need to take to repair the legacy of slavery in our country?’ Davis asked. That phrasing was actually a gift—a chance for Biden to pivot away from the sticky specifics of busing and make a lofty statement about race. But Biden didn’t take it. Instead, he offered a bizarre, rambling, and incoherent answer that barely responded to Davis, mixing racial justice, education policy, and a healthy dose of who-knows-what… “Each individual component made some sense in isolation, even the line about playing the radio or TV: Experts say it’s useful for children to hear spoken language to help them develop their own. But the way Biden phrased it, complete with an archaic mention of record players, just reinforced the overall incoherence and randomness of his response.” David A. Graham, The Atlantic Yet “through hours of sometimes exciting and sometimes tedious arguing, no candidate laid a real hand on the frontrunner. And what’s particularly striking is that barely anybody tried… Julián Castro [was] the exception that proves the rule… The dynamic is an eerie echo of the scenario that played out in the 2016 Republican primary. It seems absurd to compare a loudmouth reality television host to the former vice president. But in both cases a candidate with a base of older working class voters leapt out to an early lead. And today Biden’s main Democratic rivals — just like Trump’s four years ago — are acting like his campaign will collapse on its own and they do not need to take him on… If these dynamics hold, Biden could easily cruise to victory.” Matthew Yglesias, Vox While “[Senator Elizabeth Warren] was not dominant, she had the best performance and, more importantly, the fewest tough moments. Warren seems to come into these debates with a clear game-plan, lots of ideas and — somewhat inexplicably — seems almost impossible for her opponents to attack. If that continues to be the case, she reaps the rewards from Biden and Bernie Sanders taking hits. She’s also the only candidate with sustained upward momentum in this race. It’s difficult to see how that doesn’t continue after this.” Aaron Blake, Washington Post From the Right The right believes the debate is unlikely to change many voters’ minds. “I don’t think this #DemDebate will change a single primary vote – so, it was a Biden victory as he gets another month as the clear frontrunner.” Frank Luntz, Twitter “There’s an old joke often expressed well into banquets and conferences, where a speaker says, ‘We’re at the point where everything that needs to be said has been said, but not everyone has said it.’ We’re already at that point with the Democratic primary debates. Tonight was a three-hour ordeal, and candidates largely repeated the arguments they made in the previous two debates. There’s not much reason to expect tonight will generate any dramatic swings in the polling in the coming days or weeks… “Reports of the dramatic reinvention or relaunch of Beto O’Rourke are greatly exaggerated. Everything he says sounds like a pander, including ‘good evening.’ He is still clumsily answering in Spanish. His pledge, ‘Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15s’ ensures he’ll never get elected statewide in Texas. For almost every issue, he shares an all-too-perfect anecdote about someone he met on the trail. This was the sort of rhetorical maneuver that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama did smoothly and convincingly. With O’Rourke, you can always see the strings.” Jim Geraghty, National Review “It was easy to misunderstand Biden, whose undeniable energy was not matched by clarity. He gave an answer on Afghanistan and Iran that was so confusing Bernie Sanders accused him of opposing the surge in Iraq when he was talking about the surge in Afghanistan. Biden didn’t object to Sanders’ mischaracterization because he might have gotten lost in his own weeds. So did Elizabeth Warren, whose words, sentence by sentence, were perfectly clear but whose meaning was not. In a lengthy attack on Trump’s tariffs, she defended Trump’s tariffs. In another assault on Trump’s Afghanistan policy she basically said everything that Trump has said about Afghanistan… “The best performance of the night was probably from Cory Booker, who made a couple of good jokes and seemed passionate and calm at the same time, which is what you want from a debate. But it wasn’t the kind of thing that changes the trajectory of a race.” John Podhoretz, New York Post “Based on what I saw tonight, it’s a two-horse race for the nomination, notwithstanding decent performances by several of the no-hopers — e.g. Cory Booker and Beto O’Rourke, whom everyone praised (a sure sign that he’s a no-hoper)… The race, almost surely, is between Biden and Warren. Biden, though his bizarre answer on Iraq could have gotten him into trouble, came through the first two hours tonight in good shape, I think. Warren was her usual polished, assured, articulate self. She has her script down. Corporate America is the cause of everything that ails the country. That’s her story and she’s sticking to it.” Paul Mirengoff, Power Line Blog On the bright side… Now Popeyes is trolling America by inviting people to make their own chicken sandwiches. POLITICO PLAYBOOK
The one word nobody said at last night’s debate
By JAKE SHERMAN and ANNA PALMER
09/13/2019 05:57 AM EDT
DRIVING THE DAY
SPLIT SCREEN … ALL EYES turned to Houston on Thursday night as the top 10 Democratic presidential candidates faced off for the first time all on one stage. A FEW THOUGHTS: Health care once again dominated the evening with Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders duking it out over the issue for the first 30 minutes of the debate. Biden was on the defensive pretty much all night with nearly every other candidate taking swings at him. Julián Castro landed the most aggressive verbal punch, calling out the former VP’s age and asking if Biden was “forgetting what you said two minutes ago?”
AWKWARD LINE OF THE NIGHT: BIDEN talking about kids needing to listen to a RECORD PLAYER while discussing segregation …
… WHAT HE SAID: “Social workers help parents deal with how to raise their children. It’s not that they don’t want to help, they don’t know what to play the radio, make sure the television — excuse me, make sure you have the record player on at night, the — make sure that kids hear words, a kid coming from a very poor school — a very poor background will hear 4 million words fewer spoken by the time we get there.”
CLEANUP ON AISLE BIDEN! … BIDEN and his team were forced to do cleanup on another issue — his comments about how “nobody should be in jail for a nonviolent crime.” Post-debate, he told reporters he was talking about “nonviolent drug offenses.”
ONE WORD NOT UTTERED LAST NIGHT: Impeach.
SOMEONE SMARTER THAN US has to explain to us the coalition on Capitol Hill that would vote for a law to take away AR-15s from people and give people $1,000 each month.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING …
— JOHN HARRIS: “Biden’s previous uneven performances didn’t dislodge him atop the race, and so caution is justified in predicting bleeding wounds from this one. Even so, discursive answers on substantive issues like deportation of undocumented immigrants and Afghanistan, an oddly dated reference to a ‘record player,’ disrespectful digs and patronizing swipes from rivals, all raise the question: Can he withstand four more months of this before actual Democratic voting begins?” POLITICO
— WAPO’S DAN BALZ in Houston: “Biden delivers the debate performance he needed, despite occasional missteps”: “With all the leading Democratic candidates on the same stage for the first time this year, former vice president Joe Biden on Thursday delivered the kind of performance his supporters have been waiting for — combative when needed and in the thick of the action throughout.
“Biden did not dominate from start to finish and did not make it through the evening mistake free. But on balance this was the kind of evening he needed, after two previous debates in which he drew mixed to negative reviews, and after uneven performances at Democratic gatherings and along the campaign trail.” WaPo
— L.A. TIMES’ MARK BARABAK’S SEVEN TAKEAWAYS: “Joe Biden goes the distance … Warren faces incoming … O’Rourke shakes off the shackles … Julián Castro swings below the belt … Democrats love Obama … Kamala Harris makes nice … Ten is still a crowd.” LAT
— RYAN LIZZA: “[Biden’s] strategy, which is often mocked, of hugging Obama like a life preserver through the rapids of the primary has carried Biden far. And Thursday night suggested that trying to break loose Biden’s grip from his Obama raft is still surprisingly difficult for his opponents.” POLITICO
— NYT: “Marathon Democratic Debate Includes No Questions About Women’s Issues,” by Nick Corsaniti and Matt Stevens
AS WE PREVIEWED Thursday at the top of Playbook, President DONALD TRUMP began speaking at exactly 8:01 p.m., and stayed on stage until after 9 p.m. — counterprogramming to the debate.
SOME CHOICE LINES that highlight how he might campaign in 2020: “We’re fighting two battles: the Democrats and the media.” … Democrats want to “take your money” and “hurt your family.”
YOUR MOMENT OF ZEN … THE PRESIDENT took aim at the Green New Deal, saying “no more cows, no more planes, I guess no more people, right?”
“BECAUSE KEVIN is just like a cow, he’s just smaller,” Trump said. “I had to pick somebody for that one, Kevin, and I just looked at that beautiful, political face of yours.”
— BEHIND THE SCENES … BEFORE TRUMP spoke at the Baltimore retreat, he appeared at a private “alter call” with House Republicans. An alter call is when House Republican leaders — in this case Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise — ask for donations during a rollicking meeting.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS raised $7 million for the NRCC — $1 million each from Scalise and McCarthy. TRUMP was in a good mood in the meeting, and praised Rep. DEVIN NUNES (R-Calif.) for being brave, and one of the president’s earliest supporters.
THE ENTIRE HOUSE REPUBLICAN CONFERENCE signed a NASCAR helmet thanking TRUMP for helping win the two North Carolina congressional seats. Rep. Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) provided the helmet.
Good Friday morning. FIRST IN PLAYBOOK: With climate change becoming a central issue in the Democratic primary, the American Petroleum Institute is launching a seven-figure campaign defending the work the industry is doing to cut emissions. Ads with the tagline “We’re on it” will run on broadcast and cable TV, digital, radio and ads in airports and outdoor billboards in Washington and New York. The ads: “Noise” … “We’re On It”
A message from Business Roundtable:
Passing USMCA should be a top priority for Members of Congress to support the millions of Americans who depend on trade with Canada and Mexico. That’s why Business Roundtable is calling on Congress to by passing USMCA.
SPOTTED: Kentucky sports radio host Matt Jones boarding a Louisville-bound plane at DCA on Thursday. … SPOTTED at the Trump hotel Thursday night: U.S. Ambassador to Germany — and possible national security adviser candidate — Ric Grennell, Josh Steinman, Kash Patel and Arthur Schwartz.
PROFESSOR PHILIPPE … Longtime Hillary Clinton adviser PHILIPPE REINES has been called lots of things over the years, but add this to his list of titles: professor. Reines is teaching at Tisch College at Tufts this semester, and the title of the course is “Hindsight Might Not Be 2020: The Upheaval of Political Communications in the Era of Trump.” We are told, somewhat reliably, that students were enthralled with the first class. Reines asked the students for their primary news source, and Playbook was No. 2 behind the NYT, our source told us.
WAPO’S SCOTT WILSON in Santa Barbara, Calif.: “Trump’s proposals to tackle California homelessness face local, legal obstacles”: “The White House effort has taken state officials by surprise, as the president has shifted from criticizing California’s management of homelessness on social media to proposals that would insert the federal government directly into the crisis, including relocating homeless people living on the street and in tent camps to a federal facility.
“But the state’s growing homeless problem hasn’t been contained by similar policy initiatives in the past. It is an unusual crisis stemming in part from the state’s economic success and one where the lack of political will, rather than a lack of public resources, is often the primary obstacle to resolving it.” WaPo
NANCY COOK: “Ivanka tells donors she got her moral compass from her dad”: “At a mid-August fundraiser in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Ivanka Trump was asked to name the personality traits she inherited most from her parents. Without much of a pause, Trump told the crowd of roughly 120 high-end donors that her mother gave her an example of how to be a powerful, successful woman.
“And her father? He passed onto her his moral compass, she said, according to two event attendees. The exchange was part of a broader conversation about Ivanka Trump’s life in Washington and the White House during a swanky retreat organized by Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in the Wyoming mountains. Her appearance signaled an informal effort by the Trump campaign, family and top aides to woo donors this election cycle by sharing intimate, colorful details about this atypical White House.
“The goal: lean on the celebrity status of the sprawling Trump clan, and even well-known aides, to make donors feel like they are part of the show — and deeply committed to winning the president four more seasons.” POLITICO
A message from Business Roundtable:
American workers and families rely on trade with Canada and Mexico. and the industries that help them grow and thrive.

TURNBERRY LATEST — “Air Force says it sent crews to Trump’s Scottish resort up to 40 times,” by Bryan Bender and Natasha Bertrand: “The tally represents the preliminary results of an Air Force review launched after POLITICO reported last week that an Air National Guard crew stayed at Turnberry in March. Congressional Democrats have also been investigating military stays at the property, but have yet to receive any information from the Pentagon.
“The figure does not indicate how many of the stays have occurred since Trump became president. But the Air Force has significantly ramped up its overnight stops in Scotland under Trump after signing a contract with the Prestwick Airport — situated 20-plus miles from Turnberry — in the waning months of the Obama administration. Since 2015, the service has lodged crews in the area 659 times, meaning up to 6 percent of those stays were at Turnberry.” POLITICO
THE COUNTER-INVESTIGATION — “Justice Department authorized prosecutors to charge Andrew McCabe,” by WaPo’s Matt Zapotosky and Spencer Hsu: “Justice Department prosecutors were authorized to seek an indictment alleging former acting FBI director Andrew McCabe lied to investigators, and on Thursday he was told one of his last bids to persuade them not to had failed, people familiar with the matter said.
“But with the green light to proceed — and a grand jury summoned back after a months-long hiatus to consider the case — the day came and went with no public charges being filed. Grand jurors were sent home and McCabe remained in limbo, waiting to see whether the investigation that began more than a year ago would end with a fight to stay out of prison.” WaPo
BUT, BUT, BUT … NYT’S ADAM GOLDMAN: “Hints of the case’s weakness have since emerged. The investigation was referred about 18 months ago, which is an unusually long stretch for an inquiry with a limited set of facts and witnesses. It dragged on for so long that the first grand jury examining the evidence expired before apparently being called back this week.
“One prosecutor assigned to the case recently left, an unusual step so close to an indictment. Another departed for a private law firm and has expressed reservations about the merits of the case.
“And one key witness testified that Mr. McCabe had no motive to lie because he was authorized as the F.B.I.’s deputy director to speak to the media, so he would not have had to hide any discussions with reporters. Another important witness testified he could not immediately remember how the leak unfolded. Both would have been crucial to any prosecution.” NYT
O RLY — “Ted Cruz eyes the White House: ‘I hope to run again,’” by The Christian Science Monitor’s Linda Feldmann: “Speaking to The Monitor after a breakfast session with reporters, the Texas Republican didn’t hesitate when asked if he would take another crack at the White House.
“‘Look, I hope to run again,” said Senator Cruz … ‘We came very, very close in 2016. And it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in my life.’” CSM
A message from Business Roundtable:
It’s time for Congress to support our communities and American jobs by passing USMCA. .
TRUMP VS. THE REPUBLIC OF CALIFORNIA … REUTERS: “The Trump administration is moving forward with a plan to revoke California’s authority to set its own vehicle greenhouse gas standards and declare that states are pre-empted from setting their own vehicle rules, three people briefed on the matter said on Thursday.
“President Donald Trump met with senior officials on Thursday at the White House to discuss the administration’s plan to divide its August 2018 proposal to rollback Obama era standards through 2025 and revoke California’s waiver under the Clean Air Act to set state requirements for vehicles, the people said.
“The meeting included Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, National Economic Council director Larry Kudlow, Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and acting Office and Management and Budget director Russell Vought, the sources said.” Reuters
WSJ’S JESSICA DONATI: “The Taliban on Thursday called on the U.S. to restart talks on ending the 18-year-old conflict in Afghanistan, urging the Trump administration to revisit a nearly completed deal after it abruptly withdrew from the process last week. …
“‘We want resolution, not escalation of the issue—that is why we concluded the peace agreement with [the] U.S.,’ the [Taliban] spokesman said in an interview. ‘In our view, peaceful solution of the Afghan issue is the best solution.’ He added, ‘But if U.S. opts for continuation of the war, they will find us in the field strong and unwavering as ever.’” WSJ
OPIOID FILES — “Google Makes It Easier to Find Addiction Recovery Resources,” by Fortune’s Alyssa Newcomb: “To mark National Recovery Month, Google has created a website called Recover Together … Google is placing a link to its new recovery site under the Google.com search bar to drive awareness for people looking to take the first step toward getting sober. … Google Maps has debuted a tool for locating the nearest pharmacy to get potentially life-saving Naloxone, a non-prescription drug that reverses opioid overdoses.” Fortune
BRIEFLY NOTED … RARE, IF QUIET CRITICISM from@NikkiHaley on the news that the U.S. budget deficit blew past $1 trillion in the first 11 months of FY19: “This can’t continue…”

A message from Business Roundtable:
Passing USMCA should be a top priority for Members of Congress to support the millions of American workers and families that rely on trade with Canada and Mexico. Today we have new technologies and industries, but North American trade is stuck in a decades-old agreement. USMCA will strengthen American communities and the industries that help them grow and thrive.

Former Vice President Joe Biden turned in a mostly reassuring debate performance on Thursday night in Houston as he fended off attacks on health care and his age, maintaining his pole position in the Democratic primary field. Biden was the center of the debate from start as he, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) engaged in an extended back-and-forth about health care and how to provide affordable coverage to more Americans. Biden continued to defend the Obama era, seeking to preserve and build on the Affordable Care Act with a public option as Warren and Sanders made their respective cases for a “Medicare for All” system. The back-and-forth, broadcast by ABC News and Univision, came to a head when Biden jabbed at Sanders for being a “socialist” after the Vermont independent argued that corporations would help employees with costs, based on what workers would pay into the system. The Hill: Biden slams Sanders over health care: ‘For a socialist, you got a lot more confidence in corporate America than I do.’ In the most testy exchange, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro made an ageist attack against the former vice president when he accused him of “forgetting” details of his health care plan. He wrongfully accused Biden of saying his plan would not automatically enroll people in his public health care option. When Biden told the former San Antonio mayor that he was wrong, Castro dug in. “You just said that two minutes ago, you just said two minutes ago that they would have to buy in Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago?,” Castro said, repeating the charge seconds later. Democrats roundly panned Castro for the failed attack. Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the move a “disqualifier,” with others also offering a harsh assessment. “It was cringeworthy. Ugliest moment in all of the debates,” said one Democratic source. Castro claimed after the debate that he wasn’t attacking Biden’s age at 76, arguing it was an exchange about health care. The Hill: Castro accuses Biden of forgetting health care details, not fulfilling Obama’s legacy. The Hill: Biden grapples with Obama questions during debate. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) told CNN that Castro had some “really legitimate concerns” about the former vice president. “I think that we are at a tough point right now, because there’s a lot of people concerned about Joe Biden’s ability to carry the ball all the way across the end line without fumbling, and I think that Castro had some really legitimate concerns about, can he be someone in a long, grueling campaign that can get the ball over the line, and he has every right to call that out,” Booker said. Warren and Sanders also offered up solid performances that are unlikely to harm them in their bids for the nomination. The two continued to push progressive messages, railing against corruption, but also not making any major missteps during the three-hour affair. “Fundamentally, I don’t think anything changes after this,” said former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) while appearing on ABC News’ post-debate coverage. The Hill: Five takeaways from a three-hour debate. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who has struggled during her presidential campaign to break through in polling and performance, found opportunities on Thursday night to calmly score points without skewering other Democrats on the stage. From her opening statement about sensible problem-solving to her detailed action plan to tackle climate change, if elected president, Klobuchar came prepared to deliver a message about evolution rather than revolution in a post-Trump America. Klobuchar, who spoke for a total of 10 and a half minutes (7 minutes less than Biden), said she would rejoin the Paris Climate Accord on Day 1 and went on to list her environmental plans for her first week in office, if she’s elected, embracing Obama-era policies she said she could put in place using executive action. “You can do all that without Congress, which is good,” she said. The Hill: Klobuchar outlines climate plan for first week in office. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), in contrast, who has lost some of the traction she gained with potential voters after clashing with Biden over race during the first Democratic debate, sought to throttle the president on Thursday night, using more than 13 minutes of speaking time to try to focus on Trump. Several of her attempts at humor, including an eyebrow-raising put-down about Trump’s anatomy, dissolved into her own laughter, and in response to specific questions, some answers became anecdotes and talking points about policy problems rather than detailed policy solutions. Klobuchar and Harris both fielded pointed questions from the moderators suggesting their records as prosecutors in their respective states did not fulfill progressive expectations. Both rapidly moved on after offering short responses. The Hill: In a candidate-by-candidate analysis, who came out on top? On the Republican side, President Trump spent the evening delivering counterprogramming with an address to the annual House GOP retreat in Baltimore. Trump, who had told reporters earlier in the day he’d record the debate and watch it as a “rerun,” arrived on stage at 8:01 p.m. and delivered a montage of his greatest hits. “We will make America stronger and safer and prouder and greater than ever before. You are a terrific group, and I know almost all of you — I like most of you, I know all of you,” he said with a laugh, adding “the best is yet to come” as he closed (The Hill). Reminder: The next Democratic primary debate takes place on Oct. 15 and possibly Oct. 16 in Ohio. Republican presidential primary challengers William Weld, a former Massachusetts governor, and former Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh, are expected to debate as part of an event hosted in New York by Business Insider on Sept. 24. The Trump campaign said the president will not participate, calling it “pointless.” Former South Carolina Gov. and former Rep. Mark Sanford (R) also has been invited (The Hill). The Associated Press: Fiery exchanges Thursday night over the costs of health care. Reuters: Biden clashes with Warren, Sanders on health care during debate. The Washington Post: Democratic candidates in free-for-all over health care, immigration and foreign policy. The Associated Press: Fact Check: Claims from the Democratic debate. The New York Times: Fact-checking the Democratic debate. Dan Balz: Biden delivered the debate performance he needed, despite occasional missteps. Frank Bruni: Up, up, up with Elizabeth Warren. Benjamin Wallace-Wells: Are the Democratic presidential debates working? Margaret Sullivan: Three hours? 10 candidates? Isn’t this all (a lot) too much? |

LEADING THE DAY |
CONGRESS: House Democrats took their most concrete step yet in their impeachment push on Thursday as the House Judiciary Committee voted to expand the panel’s investigative powers as they look to shore up their case against the president. While the vote does not launch the party’s formal impeachment process, it marks the first time a Democratic panel has voted on language that explicitly lays out how the party’s ongoing investigations into alleged presidential misconduct could lead to drafting impeachment articles, as Mike Lillis and Olivia Beavers write. The vote went down along party lines, 24-17. The move comes as Democrats try to clean up their messaging on impeachment. The party has been dogged in recent weeks by questions wondering if their ongoing impeachment push is an actual effort to impeach the president, which House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) referred to during the two hour hearing. “This committee is engaged in an investigation that will allow us to determine whether to recommend articles of impeachment with respect to President Trump,” he said. “Some call this process an impeachment inquiry. Some call it an impeachment investigation. There is no legal difference between these terms, and I no longer care to argue about the nomenclature.” The investigative push will also heat up next week as Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s former campaign manager, is slated to appear before the panel to testify (The Hill). Meanwhile, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) dismissed concerns about Democrats muddling their message on impeachment, blaming the media for the perceived confusion. She also framed the panel’s impeachment vote as simply a continuation of investigations and said for the umpteenth time that they will “follow the facts.” “Legislate, investigate, litigate. That’s the path that we’ve been on, and that’s the path we continue to be on,” Pelosi said during her weekly press briefing in the Capitol. “They understand that impeachment is a very divisive measure, but if we have to go there, we’ll have to go there. But we can’t go there unless we have the facts, and we will follow the facts … and make our decision when we’re ready” (The Hill). The Associated Press: Is it impeachment if Speaker Pelosi doesn’t say so? Politico: “My time is growing near”: Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) dangles impeachment announcement. The New York Times: For military personnel, Trump’s Turnberry Hotel is “better than a tent” — and part of House Democrats’ investigations. |
© Getty Images > Spending stumbles: The Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved its annual defense spending bill on a 16-15 party-line vote, despite Democratic objections over the president’s border wall. The split vote raises questions for the Senate’s ability to pass spending legislation — which must also be reconciled with the Democratic-controlled House — ahead of a Sept. 30 funding deadline. Otherwise, a stopgap spending bill — a continuing resolution (CR) — will need to pass ahead of the deadline. “Funding an ineffective, failed campaign promise, which the president promised Mexico would pay for, is not a priority of the American people and should not be the priority of this committee,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), the panel’s ranking member. Democrats objected to the fact that the bill did not explicitly block Trump from raiding defense funds and redirecting them toward building the wall under the auspices of a national emergency. The Supreme Court gave the president the go-ahead to use the funds in late July (The Hill). Meanwhile, lawmakers are preparing to ignore the president’s request to loosen restrictions on border wall funding as part of a possible short-term spending deal. The ask was included in the Trump administration’s 21-page wish list for a continuing resolution. Congressional Republicans have made clear that they support the administration’s funding request, which would let the administration use money to build border barriers outside the Rio Grande Valley Sector. However, they’ve warned that they don’t expect the stopgap measure to include language granting the White House request for construction beyond the Rio Grande area. “Hopefully they can work out a deal where there’s maximum flexibility for the president when it comes to money for the wall, but I’m sure the Democrats will push hard back against that,” said Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), the No. 2 Senate Republican. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who is seeking reelection next year, warned that “the administration asks for it, but the Democrats don’t have to give it.” |

WHITE HOUSE & ADMINISTRATION: Trump, speaking to reporters on Thursday, said he has 15 candidates to ponder who could lead the White House National Security Council. “Everybody wants it badly, as you can imagine. And we’ll probably next week sometime make that decision,” he said. The president described the job John Bolton abruptly left this week (as the administration’s third national security adviser) as “great because it’s a lot of fun to work with Donald Trump…because I make all the decisions.” > China: Beijing is expected to resume purchases of American farm goods, Trump said on Thursday, and China confirmed that its companies are inquiring about buying agricultural products. These moves signal that both governments are trying to ease tensions that have damaged the bilateral relationship. The president’s announcement followed a day of cooling trade frictions, in which China announced that it would grant some limited exemptions to its tariffs for American products, and Trump responded by announcing a two-week delay in the United States’ next tariff hike to Oct. 15. “It is expected that China will be buying large amounts of our agricultural products!” Trump tweeted Thursday (The New York Times). > Guns: Michael Williams is a top aide to White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, and is helping to shape the president’s policy options on guns. He’s also a former attorney for the National Rifle Association and previously worked for the American Suppressor Association, which represents gun silencer manufacturers and dealers (Vice). In the wake of recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, Trump is weighing the pros and cons of endorsing a bipartisan measure currently in draft form in the Senate, which members of both parties have said depends on the president’s endorsement for potential momentum (Politico). Asked on Thursday whether he would support expanded background checks this year, Trump told reporters, “I think so,” but offered a political qualifier as a heat shield. “It depends really on the Democrats. It depends on whether or not the Democrats want to take your guns away, because it’s a possibility that this is just a ploy to take your guns away,” he said. “If it’s meaningful, we’ll make a deal. If this is a movement by the Democrats to take your guns away, then it’s never gonna happen.” The Hill: Conservatives offer a stark warning to Trump, GOP on background checks. |

➔ Generic drugs: Egads, this article grabbed our attention on Thursday. Carcinogens have tainted the generic drugs taken by patients in the United States because of a flawed Federal Drug Administration quality-control system tasked to ensure the safety of generic medications taken by 90 percent of Americans. The FDA checks less than 1 percent of drugs for impurities or potency before letting them into the country. Generics receive less federal scrutiny from the start. At least 80 percent of the active pharmaceutical ingredients used for all drugs are made in Chinese and Indian factories that U.S. pharmaceutical companies never have to identify to patients, using raw materials whose sources the pharmaceutical companies don’t know much about. Surveillance inspections of overseas factories have declined since 2016 and the FDA is under pressure to get more generics to market more quickly (Bloomberg Businessweek). ➔ Bahamas: Following the destructive wrath of Hurricane Dorian, Bahamians look for their loved ones as an estimated 1,300 people remain missing and the death toll rises (The Associated Press). ➔ Media and Facebook: Facebook is trying to counter “news deserts” in U.S. communities with its second promotion of a tool that exposes users to more local news and information. The social media giant said Thursday it is expanding its “Today In” service to 6,000 cities and towns across the United States, up from 400 in its previous effort. Launched in early 2018, the service lets Facebook users opt into local news and information from local organizations, for example, to receive missing-person alerts, local election results, road closure information and crime reports (The Associated Press). ➔ Milky Way: For the first time, scientists detected water in the atmosphere of an Earth-like planet orbiting a distant star, evidence that a key ingredient for life exists beyond our solar system, according to a study published this week. Water vapor was found in the atmosphere of K2-18b, one of hundreds of “super-Earths” — worlds ranging in size between Earth and Neptune — documented in a growing new field of astronomy devoted to the exploration of so-called exoplanets elsewhere in the Milky Way galaxy.More than 4,000 exoplanets of all types and sizes have been detected (Reuters). |

And finally … Congratulations to Morning Report quiz winners! This week’s 18th anniversary of 9/11 reminded us that readers retain keen memories about events triggered by the 2001 terror attacks. Osama bin Laden masterminded the 9/11 attacks with al Qaeda lieutenants but was never indicted. He remained on the FBI’s Most Wanted list until May 2, 2011, when U.S. special forces captured and killed him in Abbottabad, Pakistan. At 9:42 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration’s Command Center made history by ordering the closure of U.S. airspace, grounding all commercial air traffic as a precaution because of fears that terrorists still controlled planes in the air. The attacks of 9/11 triggered a cascade of U.S. federal responses, but the list of actions did not include the creation of an escape pod on Air Force One. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, one of bin Laden’s deputies, was captured in 2003 in Pakistan and is still imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, where he faces a military tribunal in January 2021. |

Christine Blasey Ford’s Father Supported the Confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh In a new bombshell report from Justice on Trial authors Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino, details emerge that seem to show Ralph Blasey not only supported the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh but quite possibly didn’t believe his own daughter’s accusations against him. After it became apparent that Blasey Ford could in no way prove that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a high school house party in the 1980s, the FBI even investigated the matter. No witness, no recollection, and no investigation offered a shred of evidence that Blasey Ford was telling the truth about the character and actions of Kavanaugh. Even so, those who opposed Kavanaugh – largely because they feared he would be a catalyst in restricting abortion in the United States – began campaigns to “Believe all Women” even inventing a trendy #BelieveWomen hashtag. FromThe Federalist: “It appears the Blasey family had significant doubts about what Ford was trying to accomplish by coming forward and making unsubstantiated allegations against Brett Kavanaugh. Within days of Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, a fascinating encounter took place. Brett Kavanaugh’s father was approached by Ford’s father at the golf club where they are both members. Ralph Blasey, Ford’s father, went out of his way to offer to Ed Kavanaugh his support of Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court, according to multiple people familiar with the conversation that took place at Burning Tree Club in Bethesda, Maryland. ‘I’m glad Brett was confirmed,’ Ralph Blasey told Ed Kavanaugh, shaking his hand. Blasey added that the ordeal had been tough for both families.” Bill Burr Takes Aim at ‘Woke’ Feminism in ‘Paper Tiger’ Comedian Bill Burr echoed Dave Chappelle’s condemnation of thought policing in his most recent special, “Paper Tiger,” on Netflix. Burr specifically mocks women who choose to “believe all women,” no matter what. “That’s a little open-ended, huh?” he says to the audience. “What about the psychos?” Though he avoids Chappelle’s favorite topic of going after the “alphabet people,” Burr holds back nothing when it comes to railing against women who would have him canceled. He nearly seems to bait them with a scathing joke about former First Lady Michelle Obama’s lack of professional qualifications and mocks a group of women who cheer when he suggests we could soon have a female president. “You don’t even know what her … platform is, and you automatically cheer?” he asks incredulously. Early reviews of the special seem to nervously approve its quality of comedic content but shakily condemn the jokes about feminism. Personally, I found the jokes about women refreshing, honest, and an important support of people too afraid of the wokescolds to suggest we maybe should NOT believe all women. Selected reviews of ‘Paper Tiger’: -Kathryn VanArendonk for Vulture: “In his biggest and most convincingly risky swing, the first few minutes include a bit about Michelle Obama. Burr, in full character as angriest man in the world, is not a Michelle fan. It is an opening segment that dares you to turn the special off in disgust” – Adam Condra for The Federalist: “It’s a great special; old-school vulgar, consistently funny, and flush with the kind of sub-surface pathos that elevates good stand-up to great. And I’m worried that, largely because of Burr himself, no one is going to talk about it.” – David Hookstead for The Daily Caller: “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m happy to report Bill Burr still has all the talent in the world when it comes to cracking a joke.” Weekend Reading Marianne Williamson thinks conservatives are nicer to her than her own Democratic Party.(The Federalist) Liz Cheney slimes Rand Paul for ‘supporting terrorism’ after he celebrated the departure of John Bolton and slammed Dick Cheney in his consistent stance against war. (Deadline) The most important cinematic release of 2019 is finally coming in just one week. “Downton Abbey” the movie has already dazzled critics and fans with big gulps of nostalgia and, of course, fancy British aristocrats having dinner. I’ll be catching the midnight show on Thursday. (Variety) While not totally perfect “The Spy” on Netflix about the turbulent and captivating life of Israeli spy Eli Cohen delivers a well-constructed telling of an emotional and thrilling story. The lead cast, led by a surprisingly capable Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat!), has excellent chemistry and does a marvelous job taking viewers back to one of the most important times in Israel’s modern history. DESERET NEWS
IJR
NBC
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: It was a status-quo debate
For everything that was different about last night’s Democratic presidential debate – finally just one night, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren sharing the same stage – so much seemed the same.
The same opening questions on health care and Medicare for All.
The same divide between progressives and pragmatists.
Pretty much the same questions on race and immigration.
And the same dynamic with a low-polling young candidate (this time Julian Castro) taking a not-so-subtle shot at Biden’s age.
AP Photo/David J. Phillip
Now there were SOME other differences.
Biden – despite his characteristic verbal tics and unclear syntax – had his strongest performance to date.
Elizabeth Warren had another solid outing, but also struggled answering direct questions on her support for Medicare for All/single-payer.
Bernie Sanders had a raspy throat.
Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke (invoking the El Paso shooting) punched above their polling weight.
Kamala Harris vacillated between her strong first debate performance (when addressing Trump) and her weak second performance.
And Andrew Yang said he would start giving away his $1,000-a-month plan to 10 American families.
But if anyone thinks last night debate changes the overall dynamics of this Democratic presidential race, they saw something we didn’t.
Last night only reinforced what we’ve already seen – including at past debates.
Here’s why Joe Biden remains your Democratic frontrunner
And if you’re the Trump campaign or Fox News, last night’s debate also reinforced an image of a Democratic Party that’s gone too far to the left.
O’Rourke said he would take away your AR-15. (“Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.”)
Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders had no qualms about ending private health insurance in America. (“I’ve actually never met anybody who likes their health insurance company,” Warren said.)
And Pete Buttigieg emphasized his plan to bring immigrants to Small Town America. (“In some of the most conservative, rural areas of Iowa, I have seen communities that embraced immigration grow.”)
Well, guess who didn’t talk about taking away your AR-15 or your private health insurance?
Answer: Joe Biden.
And if you want to know why he remains the Democratic frontrunner and why he’s viewed as the most “electable” Dem by most voters, that’s a big part of the reason.
Right now, Biden is dominating the lane of Democratic primary voters who believe replacing Trump is the No. 1 priority.
2020 VISION: Fact-checking Castro vs. Biden
The most contentious portion of last night’s debate was when Castro took on Biden.
CASTRO: But the difference between what I support and what you support, Vice President Biden, is that you require them to opt in and I would not require them to opt in. They would automatically be enrolled…
BIDEN: They do not have to buy in. They do not have to buy in.
CASTRO: You just said that. You just said that two minutes ago. You just two minutes ago that they would have to buy in.
[snip]
CASTRO: Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago? Are you forgetting already what you said just two minutes ago? I mean, I can’t believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in and now you’re saying they don’t have to buy in. You’re forgetting that.
But, per NBC’s Mike Memoli, here’s what Biden DID say earlier:
“Anyone who can’t afford it gets automatically enrolled in the Medicare-type option we have.”
Bottom line: It sure looks like Castro got his attack wrong.
NBC’s Benjy Sarlin adds that it appears Biden and Castro were talking past each other, with Castro highlighting a significant difference in their plans, while Biden was accurate in describing his own plan.
Still, talking past each other doesn’t justify a “Are you forgetting what you said two minutes ago?” response.
On the campaign trail today: Elizabeth Warren attends the MassDems Agenda convention in Springfield, Mass…. Sanders remains in Nevada… Beto O’Rourke stumps in Katy, Texas… Julian Castro attends the Cap Times Ideas Fest in Madison, Wis… Pete Buttigieg speaks at the CBC Phoenix Awards Dinner in DC… And Gabbard and Bennet stay in Iowa.
Dispatches from NBC’s embeds: After the third presidential debate ended, arguably the real debate began in the spin room, where candidates and surrogates tried to maximize certain parts of their night and spin some other ones.
Per NBC’s Gary Grumbach and Priscilla Thompson: Bernie Sanders said he doesn’t believe Vice President Joe Biden’s vote on the Iraq war is “disqualifying” but Sanders “helped lead the opposition to what turned out to be the worst foreign policy blunder in the modern history of America.” During the debate Biden expressed regret at voting for the war.
Andrew Yang commented on the legality of his freedom dividend (on the debate stage Yang promised to give 10 people $1,000 per month for one year): “We have an army of lawyers who signed off on this and said it was perfectly legal, but I want everyone to reflect for a moment that we are at a point in time when a billionaire can spend $10 million, plus buying his way onto the debate stage and everyone thinks that is A-okay but then us literally giving money to Americans … somehow that is problematic” (Wink, wink, Tom Steyer.)
TWEET OF THE DAY: What didn’t get asked last night
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 45 percent.
45 percent.
That’s the share of Americans who are in favor of a mandatory buyback program of assault-style weapons, according to an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.
Almost exactly the same share — 46 percent — are opposed.
Seven-in-10 Democrats favor the buyback plan, but just 40 percent of independents and 23 percent of Republicans say the same.
AP Photo/Charles Krupa
THE LID: I’m just a bill, sittin’ here on Capitol Hill
Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we offered the good news that Americans know a little bit more about how the government works than they used to! (The bad news? It’s still not that much.)
ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss
Miss the debate? Here are the highlights from our video team.
Meanwhile, the president had his own lengthy speech in Baltimore as counterprogramming to the debate.
Dan Balz writes that Biden got the debate performance he needed, even though it was far from perfect.
The Air Force says it sent crews to Trump’s Scotland resort as many as 40 times since 2015.
Boris Johnson says he didn’t lie to the Queen about his reasons for wanting to suspend Parliament.

Elizabeth Heng’s video draws irrational response from AOC Posted: 13 Sep 2019 05:13 AM PDT Elizabeth Heng is a Republican. She made that clear in a video her PAC ran during last night’s Democratic debate. Two presidential candidates attended conference conducted by gay- and Jew-hating Islamists Posted: 13 Sep 2019 03:32 AM PDT America’s mainstream media is following around the major presidential candidates like ducklings chasing after their mothers. They cover every move they make, word they speak, and hand they shake. But there are times when the media goes silent and selectively omits an activity from being reported. Democratic Establishment sighs in relief as Joe Biden’s debate wasn’t disastrous Posted: 13 Sep 2019 03:02 AM PDT Former Vice President Joe Biden is the anointed pick of the Democratic Establishment. The same people who gave us Hillary Clinton to beat up on in 2016 are pushing hard for Biden to be President Trump’s next electoral victim. It’s ironic considering the state of the Democratic Party that an old white guy is the […] The post Democratic Establishment sighs in relief as Joe Biden’s debate wasn’t disastrous appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Every Democrat with a chance of winning agrees with Beto O’Rourke’s ‘buyback’ scheme Posted: 13 Sep 2019 01:21 AM PDT There was a worrisome sentiment shared during last night’s Democratic debate. It isn’t that big of a deal hat Beto O’Rourke claims he’ll take away our firearms in an illegal gun “buyback” scheme. He’s not in any danger of winning the Democratic nomination, so his words are relatively meaningless. But the responses to his gun-grabber […] The post Every Democrat with a chance of winning agrees with Beto O’Rourke’s ‘buyback’ scheme appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
‘Pandering Pete’ Buttigieg wants to pay teachers as much as doctors Posted: 13 Sep 2019 01:02 AM PDT It was one of those debate moments that is taboo to decry. Teachers are treated with the same reverence in Democratic circles as law enforcement officers are treated in Republican circles. Both play major roles in how our country operates. Both deserve a ton of respect. It’s not politically correct to say this, but I’m […] The post ‘Pandering Pete’ Buttigieg wants to pay teachers as much as doctors appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Beto O’Rourke wants attention so badly, he’s willing to say anything Posted: 13 Sep 2019 12:38 AM PDT What will it take for Democrats to take Beto O’Rourke seriously? Considered a frontrunner before actually launching his presidential campaign, the former Congressman has been nothing short of a complete disappointment to his dwindling fan base after seeming almost destined to be a major player in the nomination race. Now, he’s going to use controversy […] The post Beto O’Rourke wants attention so badly, he’s willing to say anything appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
History Channel’s Knightfall: Ambitious yet cowardly writing Posted: 13 Sep 2019 12:09 AM PDT The age old first world struggle of finding a new show on Netflix to watch had me taking a risk on a show that looked like a foreign production period piece. But to my pleasant surprise it had the same quality of production one could expect from Vikings. Amy Klobuchar: ‘While Bernie wrote the bill, I read the bill’ Posted: 12 Sep 2019 05:34 PM PDT Amy Klobuchar’s candidacy may be fading, but she made an important point against Bernie Sanders’s and Elizabeth Warren’s push for Medicare-for-All during tonight’s Democratic debate. On page eight of the bill, health insurance as we know it today would be eliminated. And Pete Buttigieg seized on the opportunity to highlight his own Medicare-for-All-Who-Want-It proposal by […] The post Amy Klobuchar: ‘While Bernie wrote the bill, I read the bill’ appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Andrew Yang’s ‘Freedom Dividend’ bribe appeals to left’s ‘free stuff’ mantra Posted: 12 Sep 2019 05:12 PM PDT At tonight’s Democratic Debate, Andrew Yang offered to give ten random families money over the next year. REALCLEARPOLITICS
09/13/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Fisher Investments: Debate Snapshots; Mitch vs. Amy; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on Sep 13, 2019 09:19 am Good morning, it’s Friday, Sept. 13, 2019. Yes, Friday the 13th, a day when superstitious people exhibit extra caution. It’s also the day of the week when I pass along an uplifting quotation. So, I’ll try and combine the two, and use my favorite sport to do it. In the great baseball movie “Bull Durham,” veteran catcher Crash Davis (played by Kevin Costner) tells fireballing and naïve young pitcher Nuke Laloosh (Tim Robbins) to “never screw with a winning streak.” Actually, Crash uses a verb of Anglo-Saxon origins instead of the word “screw,” but you get the point. So did Nuke, which causes him to do less screwing, so to speak. You see, the young pitcher has hooked up with Annie Savoy (Susan Sarandon), but he’s finally having success on the mound and, taking Crash Davis’ advice to heart, he stops seeing Annie, at least in the biblical way. This upsets our heroine, as we’ll see in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Debate Snapshots: 10 Candidates, 10 Strategies on Display. Phil Wegmann and Susan Crabtree have this assessment. Did Mitch McConnell Recruit His Opponent? A.B. Stoddard is unimpressed by the establishment-backed Democrat challenging the Senate majority leader. Poll: GOP Could Rebound in Orange County and New Mexico. Susan reports on the findings. Fact-Checkers Rely Heavily on Media Reports for “Truth.” Kalev Leetaru has this analysis. Ranked-Choice Voting Could Help Dems — and the Nation. David Daley explains his support for a system intended to produce nominees who better reflect the majority preference of the electorate. How Oberlin’s Bias and Bloat Fueled a $33 Million Blunder. RealClearEducation editor Nathan Harden laments the rise in influence wielded on college campuses by student life coordinators, diversity deans, and student affairs officers. American Energy Security and Climate Change. In RealClearEnergy, Jim Webb & Jim Nicholson argue that improvements in technology mean oil and natural gas can be part of the energy/climate change solution. How to Succeed in Tennis Without Really Trying. In RealClearBooks, J. Christian Adams reviews Roger L. Simon’s novel “The Goat.” * * * Annie Savoy knows more about baseball than she does about adult relationships. Crash Davis knows a lot about both. This is not necessarily a blessing. Crash knows enough about baseball to know that he’s not going to The Show, as least as a player. He knows enough about life to realize he’s jealous of Nuke Laloosh’s romance with Annie. A showdown is brewing, which Nuke precipitates by telling Annie that Crash told him never to mess with a streak, which Nuke has interpreted (as Crash intended) to rule out sexual congress with Annie. Before I continue, two points: I’m writing about these characters in present tense, as though they were not only alive but contemporary. All I can say in that regard is that, to me, they are. Second, if you haven’t seen this movie and are having a little trouble following this, rent it tonight on Neflix or wherever. It’s wonderful. Now, back to our story, in which our love triangle tightens as Annie Savoy confronts Crash Davis. Crash: I never told him to stay out of your bed. Annie: You most certainly did. Crash: I told him that a player on a streak has to respect the streak. Annie: Oh, fine. Crash: You know why? Because they don’t happen very often. Annie: Right. Crash: If you believe you’re playing well because you’re getting laid, or because you’re not getting laid, or because you wear women’s underwear, then you are! And you should know that. Annie: I want you. For those who haven’t seen the movie, or who saw it so long ago that you don’t remember what happened next, I’ll leave it there. But here’s my Friday-the-13th point: While baseball players may seem notoriously superstitious, it’s not because they are excessively spiritual or because there is anything eerie about their sport. It’s because the game is so hard. Anything that bolsters a player’s sense of self-efficacy helps put him in the right frame of mind to play well. It’s ritual more than superstition. As baseball writer Josh Rohrer noted in an essay on this topic, players and managers — and even fans — “stick with whatever is working to ensure the delicate balance of karma is kept positive.” To my way of thinking, “karma” in this instance is very nearly a synonym for “confidence.” Players cross themselves, point to the heavens, eat chicken before each game, refused to change socks, go unshaven, point the bat toward the pitcher — any manner of things. Joe DiMaggio touched second base with his foot at the end of every half inning as he ran in from centerfield. Does that seem compulsive? Well, you might say that Joe’s obsessions never let DiMag down. He had an amazing career from start to finish. Then again, there’s the approach used by another great Yankee. Babe Ruth played the game, as he played life, without over-thinking things. Asked once if he had any superstitions, the Babe replied, “Just one. Whenever I hit a home run, I make certain I touch all four bases.” And there’s your quote of the week. Carl M. Cannon Washington Bureau chief, RealClearPolitics @CarlCannon (Twitter) ccannon@realclearpolitics.com For years, many pundits and politicians have claimed Internet behemoths are too powerful and monopolistic. Then, in June, the House announced they would launch a probe into several tech giants. Despite many possible outcomes, we don’t view these possibilities as a reason to avoid Tech now. Why Last Night’s Debate Was Both Comically Bad and Painfully Annoying Jim Geraghty Making the click-through worthwhile: Why last night’s Democratic presidential primary debate was so bad; a suddenly hot issue that surprisingly never came up last night; an important and under-discussed detail about that Trump resort in Scotland; and a very important appointment for this weekend. The Democratic Debates Have Curdled from Somewhat Illuminating to Bad Last night is when the Democratic presidential primary debates shifted from mildly entertaining showcases of comically overambitious narcissists with little to no self-awareness — “I’m ready to be commander-in-chief on day one because in the House, I’ve introduced a bill that would —” to a genuinely annoying group exercise in ritualized belief that bumper-sticker slogans can fix the world, that most of the country’s problems go away once Donald Trump is no longer president, and that anecdotes prove it. Readers, you know I have plenty of beefs with President Trump. Some of you write in to let me know you disagree, and some of you let me know that you’re tired of me pointing out where Trump gets it wrong. THE AMERICAN SPECTATOR
Today’s Top News September 13, 2019 Houston Hatefest: Dems Go Nasty The villains in the Democratic Party story of America do not remain hundreds of years beyond our reach. Cops, gun owners, factory farmers, employees of insurance and pharmaceutical companies, Wall Street speculators, the oil industry, Republicans, and so many others who, together, constitute the majority of the nation. By: Daniel J. By: Geoff Shepard Trump’s Carrot-and-Stick Middle East Policy President Donald Trump’s recent firing of his national security advisor John Bolton (or acceptance of Bolton’s resignation) has raised speculation that the Trump administration is changing course on foreign policy and security. By: Daniel Krygier Beto Takes Aim at Gun Rights, Hits Planned Parenthood, Illegals In this genius move Beto has now, in an instant, made plain that pressuring credit card companies to stop the financial support of something the Left doesn’t like — gun rights — is an acceptable tactic.
