Friday, August 16, 2019 Israel Bans Omar and Tlaib “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday barred U.S. Democratic congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar from making a planned trip to Israel.” Reuters Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump tweeted, “It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds.” Twitter From the Left The left is critical both of Netanyahu’s decision to bar Omar and Tlaib, and of Trump’s encouragement that he do so. “Last we checked, both the United States and Israel were democracies — and allies. Yet on Thursday the leaders of both countries sounded more like crazy autocrats with a penchant for silencing their critics. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to prohibit U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) from entering Israel on an official congressional visit not only smacks of tin-pot authoritarianism, it elevates his critics… A real, vibrant democracy… isn’t afraid to engage its critics.” Editorial Board, LA Times “How many dictators are rejoicing today that a U.S. president has given them full permission to bar members of Congress who in the future might want to visit their countries to monitor elections or speak up for human rights?… Israel enacted a law two years ago authorizing officials to deny entry to supporters of the BDS movement. That was a sign of weakness: How could a country with a robust pluralistic democracy bar nonviolent visitors based on their political beliefs? And that the president of the United States would promote such a ban is doubly atrocious.” John Nichols, The Nation In the past, “the president has grounded a military jet set for use by the Democratic House speaker, yanked a security clearance from a former CIA director critical of him, threatened to withhold disaster aid from states led by Democrats, pushed to reopen a criminal investigation targeting Hillary Clinton and publicly called for federal action to punish technology and media companies he views as biased against him… By pressuring the Israeli government to bar entry by two members of Congress, President Trump once again used the power and platform of his office to punish his political rivals.” Toluse Olorunnipa, Washington Post “There is an argument quickly developing that it would have made sense to allow Omar and Tlaib into Israel if they were genuinely interested in learning about Israel’s security challenges firsthand and hearing from Israelis, but that their itinerary was instead going to be one-sided and intended to showcase Israel’s ugliest warts. This misses the larger point… “It does not matter what Omar and Tlaib intended to see or with whom they intended to meet… If the Israeli government views the opinions of two members of Congress to be so threatening to its fundamental well-being that it believes there are greater benefits than costs to keeping them out of Israel, it is a clearer sign of Israel’s weakness than anything that Omar or Tlaib could point to on their own. Allowing Omar and Tlaib into Israel with open arms and smiling as they conduct an unbalanced tour while bashing their host country would show that Israel is secure in its convictions and confident in its claims. Barring Omar and Tlaib does the opposite, and makes Israel look small.” Michael J. This is a man who, in 2015, told a room full of Jewish Republicans that ‘you’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money,’ adding that ‘you want to control your politicians, that’s fine.’ In 2016, Trump released a campaign ad that played a quote from one of his speeches over footage of George Soros and former Fed Chair Janet Yellen (also Jewish), a visual that comes across as an anti-Semitic dog whistle. This April, he told an American Jewish audience that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was ‘their’ prime minister, implying that American Jews have a dual loyalty to Israel — a worse version of the controversial comments Omar once made about the pro-Israel lobby.” Zack Beauchamp, Vox From the Right The right is divided about whether barring Omar and Tlaib is the right decision or whether it will be counterproductive. “Omar and Tlaib were invited to be part of [an earlier] delegation by the leadership of the House Democratic Caucus. But the pair ruled this out… Omar and Tlaib’s proposed itinerary read like a laundry list of provocative actions designed to intentionally stoke ethnic and religious tensions. Their rumored demand to pray alongside leaders from the Palestinian Authority at the Temple Mount – Judaism’s holiest site and also the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam – could have incited a riot and kicked off a round of deadly violence… The two congresswomen have First Amendment rights – as do all American citizens – to express their beliefs. But Israel, as a sovereign nation, also has every right to decide who can and cannot enter its borders and for what purpose.” Brooke Goldstein, Fox News “Should Israel have taken the high road and given two enemies of Israel visas for this propaganda visit? Probably. It usually does. Allowing foes to enter the country reflects the strong liberal values that make Israel a special place in Middle East… [But] what principle of democracy states that you have to issue visas to foreigners who are actively engaged in efforts to harm your citizens? If Republican Steve King were denied an entry visa into Mexico, not a single congressperson would stand up for him, not a single presidential candidate would claim that Mexico had insulted the honor of the United States, not a single Democrat would argue that it reflected poorly on Mexican democracy, and not a single liberal pundit would contend that the Mexican-U.S. relationship was being hurt… “It needs to be stressed that Tlaib and Omar aren’t mere ‘critics’ of Israel, as the media incessantly claims. Critics of Israel find fault with policies of the nation’s government… Tlaib and Omar actively support a movement with the strategic aim of rallying the world to destroy the Jewish state economically… The boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement (BDS) not only challenges Israel’s right to exist, it relies on age-old antisemitic tropes, conspiracy theories, and blood libels to propel the message.” David Harsanyi, The Federalist “Israel shouldn’t bar critics but I can’t fault it for wanting to bar enemies, which is what Omar and Tlaib are… as for complaints that barring Omar and Tlaib will itself hand them a propaganda opportunity to play the victim and cry crocodile tears about Israeli illiberalism, making them do that here is preferable to letting them do it in front of a banc of reporters on Israeli soil. The point, again, is that their posture towards the Jewish state is implacably adversarial and they’re making no bones about it. Their itinerary telegraphed the fact that they would use the trip to agitate against the country. There’s no reason for the Israeli government to be party to that.” Allahpundit, Hot Air Others, however, argue that “as it stands, Omar and Tlaib have little support in Congress when it comes to their anti-Israel sentiments. The Democratic Party is doing what it can to temper their rhetoric and make sure their policies remain unpopular in the House. But singling out these two lawmakers could reverse the tide and compel the Democrats to stand behind them. In fact, it already has. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer and Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee — two Democratic lawmakers who have criticized Omar and Tlaib in the past — have issued statements condemning Israel’s decision. Omar and Tlaib’s visit to Israel would not have been productive, but it’s better to let them make fools of themselves than to make martyrs out of them.” Kaylee McGhee, Washington Examiner Netanyahu “is playing into a propaganda trap by allowing Omar and Tlaib to suggest that the reality of Israel is as they depict it to be, rather than the thriving democracy it is. Omar and Tlaib will now depict Israel as afraid of its record and interfering in the lives of anyone who is critical of Israel or Netanyahu… Had Omar and Tlaib visited Israel, their statements would have been negative, and they may have highlighted a false narrative or amplified Israel’s very real flaws beyond proportion. But ultimately, the news coverage would have been a flash in the pan. Now, however, they can always claim to be martyrs for the cause.” Michael Rubin, Washington Examiner “Denying Omar and Tlaib a platform to visit the country they have both maligned was a mistake. It did them a service, not Israel. Israel should reconsider this decision if for no other reason than for the sake of its defenders in the United States. The vibrant, strong and democratic society that it is can easily afford the misguided showboating of a couple of members of Congress… The best thing that could happen for friends of Israel is to let these two congresswomen go to Israel and talk — not despite their views but because of them. POLITICO Playbook: Tlaib is going to Israel after all

REP. RASHIDA TLAIB (D-Mich.) is going to Israel. She asked to go visit her grandmother in the West Bank, and the Israeli government granted the request, several reporters, including Channel 13/Axios’ BARAK RAVID, reported early today. Tlaib sent a letter — on congressional letterhead — asking to visit her 90-year-old grandmother in Beit Ur al-Fauqa, a Palestinian village near Ramallah in the West Bank. She promised the Israeli government she wouldn’t participate in boycotts while there. The letter, via Noa Landau of Haaretz
— HEATHER CAYGLE scooped that House Minority Leader STENY HOYER (D-Md.) visited Tlaib’s grandmother in the West Bank when he was in Israel.
TYING IT ALL TOGETHER … ISRAELI PM BENJAMIN NETANYAHU united the following people against him Thursday when he decided to ban TLAIB and Rep. ILHAN OMAR (D-Minn.) from entering Israel — each of these people thought it was a mistake and said so publicly: Speaker NANCY PELOSI, Senate Minority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER, Sen. MARCO RUBIO (R-Fla.), HOYER, AIPAC, BEN SHAPIRO and ERICK ERICKSON.
— SUPPORTIVE STATEMENTS FOR NETANYAHU: Republican Reps. MO BROOKS of Alabama and CHIP ROY of Texas. Rep. LEE ZELDIN (R-N.Y.) issued this statement, which didn’t directly address it, but we followed up with him, asking whether he supports Netanyahu’s decision, and he said: “Yes. That is within Israel’s right to do. Tlaib and Omar have been approaching this issue dangerously wrong.”
SEN. LINDSEY GRAHAM (R-S.C.), referring to the “boycott, divestment, sanctions” movement to pressure and isolate Israel over its settlement policies, said, “If you openly joined an international movement to destroy the state of Israel, then you’ll suffer the consequences.”
— THE HOUSE GOP LEADERSHIP … House Minority Leader KEVIN MCCARTHY, who previously had urged Netanyahu to allow Tlaib and Omar to enter,said the pair should’ve gone on the trip that was put on by an AIPAC-linked group, but didn’t say whether he backed Netanyahu’s decision. SCOOP … THE DCCC raised $7.296 million in July, which they say is their best off-year July in history. The House Democrats’ party committee has $28.76 million on hand, and has raised $68.9 million this year. All of their totals surpass where they were in 2017, when they launched their bid to take back the majority.

| President Trump successfully lobbied Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bar entry to two freshman members of Congress who planned to visit Israel next week to lodge complaints about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians. The president’s unprecedented involvement and Netanyahu’s assent on Thursday to initially deny entry to two Democrats, Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, ignited another round of partisan tension in Washington and renewed debate on the world stage about what the president and the prime minister are trying to accomplish. The Israelis backed off in part early this morning, allowing Tlaib to enter the Israeli-occupied West Bank on humanitarian grounds to see her 90-year-old grandmother in the region. Minister Aryeh Deri published a letter from Tlaib, saying she would respect any restrictions and would “not promote boycotts” during her visit. However, she is still not allowed to make the official visit as initially planned, and Omar remains barred from entering the region. Trump — who campaigned Thursday in New Hampshire and mentioned Omar once in passing during his 95-minute rally — has tried to divide the Democratic caucus by branding Omar and Tlaib, both women of color and both Muslim, as far-left House extremists. “Representatives Omar and Tlaib are the face of the Democrat Party, and they HATE Israel!” he tweeted. Both lawmakers are critics of the president and Netanyahu, support Palestinian rights and have backed the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel (The Hill). “I can’t imagine why Israel would let them in. But if they want to let them in, they can,” the president told reporters before his rally began in New Hampshire. The Washington Post: Governing by grievance, Trump wields official powers against political enemies. Netanyahu, for his part, said he is complying with a law adopted in his country in 2017 that bars entry to foreign supporters of the global movement to boycott Israel (The New York Times). The prime minister also faces a critical election a month from now. “It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit,” Trump tweeted. “They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!” Netanyahu, in a statement, defended his blockade against Omar and Tlaib. “The two-member congressional visitation plan shows that their intent is to hurt Israel and increase its unrest against it.” Tlaib, whose megaphone grew on Thursday as a result of the controversy, tweeted a photograph of her smiling Palestinian grandmother. “The decision by Israel to bar her granddaughter, a U.S. Congresswoman, is a sign of weakness b/c the truth of what is happening to Palestinians is frightening,” she wrote. Omar tweeted that as a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, oversight of U.S. foreign aid and support for human rights are part of her job, woven into the trip she and Tlaib planned to make. Trump, she continued, exported his Muslim ban to Netanyahu, and the prime minister “has consistently resisted peace efforts, restricted the freedom of movement of Palestinians, public knowledge of the brutal realities of the occupation and aligned himself with Islamophobes like Donald Trump.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), one of a House foursome that includes Omar and Tlaib and is nicknamed “the squad,” tore into Netanyahu with the suggestion that unless all U.S. lawmakers are welcome in Israel, none should travel there (The Hill). Democratic leaders and a few Republicans in Congress, including Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), protested on Thursday that treating elected members of Congress as threats to an ally because of their beliefs was a regrettable mistake between two stalwart democracies (The Hill). Lawmakers running for president, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), also assailed Trump and said Israel should admit the lawmakers. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a statement that “Israel’s denial of entry to Congresswomen Tlaib and Omar is a sign of weakness and beneath the dignity of the great State of Israel.” Collins argued that if Trump had stayed out of the controversy and Israel had welcomed the two congresswomen next week for their planned itinerary, it would have sent a powerful message. “Israel should allow U.S. Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar to visit. The Trump Administration made a mistake in urging Israel to prevent them from entering the country,” she tweeted. “Instead, the Administration should have encouraged Israel to welcome the visit as an opportunity for Reps. Tlaib, and Omar to learn from the Israeli people. We have to be willing to talk if we want people to change their views.” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) noted that a bipartisan group of lawmakers traveled to Israel a few weeks ago, and he suggested Tlaib and Omar passed up an opportunity to join that group. “A record 70+ members of Congress—Reps and Dems—came to Israel this month with open minds, open eyes, and open ears. It’s unfortunate that a few freshmen members declined to join this opportunity to hear from all sides. They should have come,” he tweeted. | POLITICS & CAMPAIGNS: The Democratic presidential field shrunk on Thursday as former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper announced his exit from the race. He said he’s exploring a potential bid for the Senate in what is expected to be a prime opportunity for Democrats to flip a seat in 2020. Hickenlooper made the news official in a video announcement to supporters, indicating that he will give a Senate bid a serious look despite repeatedly saying that he would not be a good fit for the Senate and that being a senator is not something he’s “cut out to be.” A potential Hickenlooper bid for the Senate could be a boon for Democrats, who tried to drop hints in the media over the past week that he would be in good shape if he did decide to make the jump. On Sunday, The Denver Post published polling connected to “a national Democratic group involved in Senate races” showing the former governor holding a commanding 51-point lead in the crowded Senate primary. A day later a super PAC known as the 314 Action Fund rolled out a “Draft Hick for Senate” campaign and released polling showing Hickenlooper leading Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) by double digits (The Hill). |

They also admit that Gardner is the underdog in a race against Hickenlooper, but note that Gardner also played that role in 2014 when he upset former Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.). They argue that Hickenlooper has weaknesses they can exploit. “Even if Hickenlooper gets in, he’s still going to have a difficult fight,” said one GOP strategist. “[Gardner’s] still the same guy and capable of delivering an upset this time around.” “Although it may sound good to some Washington Democrats for Hickenlooper to get out of the presidential race and enter the Colorado Senate race…what excites their base are fresh faces, and he’s not that at all,” the strategist continued. “I don’t think his entry in the race into the Colorado Senate race does more than earn a week of headlines.” The strategist also likened the playbook against Hickenlooper to the same one used in the last two cycles against former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, former Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) and former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, where Republicans successfully labeled them as a bunch of has-beens and retreads. However, they concede the political conditions are different in Colorado than those four states. > Trump says a Democratic president would put economy at risk: The president told New Hampshire supporters the economy would “go down the tubes” if he loses in 2020. “You have no choice but to vote for me,” he said a day after the largest decline in financial markets seen this year, triggered by fears of a possible recession. “Whether you love me or hate me, you’ve got to vote for me,” he told a crowd in Manchester, arguing that the value of Americans’ retirement accounts depend on his winning a second term (The Hill). > O’Rourke back: Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) announced his plans to return to the campaign trail on Thursday after taking nearly two weeks to return to his hometown of El Paso, Texas, to comfort residents after a mass shooting. O’Rourke, who has struggled to gain traction and is facing calls to drop out and run for Senate, says he is redoubling his commitment to the presidential race. He attacked the president as a white supremacist, pointing to immigrant communities he says have been “terrorized” by the president, and called for new gun reforms (The Hill). “There have been some who have suggested that I stay in El Paso and run for Senate,” O’Rourke said. “But that would not be good enough for this community … we must take this fight directly to the source of this problem. The person who has caused this pain and placed this country in the moment of peril, and that is Donald Trump.” “As we head back to the campaign trail today, I know there is a way to do this better,” O’Rourke continued. “To those places where Donald Trump has been terrorizing … our fellow Americans, that’s where you’ll find me and this campaign. From El Paso, we’re heading to Mississippi to be with those families who have lost a loved one … because of the hostility of this administration to immigrants … anyone this president puts down, we will do our best to lift up.” The former Texas congressman also dashed the hopes of many Democrats who were hoping he would drop his presidential bid in favor of a Senate race against Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), telling MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell that he will not do so under “any scenario.” “I will not in any scenario run for the United States Senate,” O’Rourke said. “I’m running for president. I’m running for this country. I’m taking this fight directly to Donald Trump and that is what I am exclusively focused on doing right now.” Politico: NRA struggling to counter gun control push. Ahead of his appearance in the Granite State, Trump lauded his former campaign hand as “an outstanding guy” during an interview with the “New Hampshire Today” radio show, adding that he “would be a great senator.” “Well, first of all, I have to tell you that I think he would be fantastic. He’s got great energy. He’s terrific on television … He’s a really good guy,” Trump said in the interview. | CONGRESS: House Republicans have expressed interest in supporting the primary opponent of Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) next year in the wake of his most recent head-scratching remarks, this time on abortion, rape and incest. A pair of prominent House Republicans, Reps. Paul Mitchell (Mich.) and Steve Stivers (Ohio), told The Hill on Thursday that they are actively considering backing Randy Feenstra, a state senator who has outraised King in consecutive fundraising quarters. Mitchell said that he plans on donating the maximum amount to Feenstra, while Stivers, who chaired the House GOP campaign arm in 2018, says he is “considering my options on supporting his primary opponent,” adding that the state senator is a “good man” from what he has heard. “I will be openly contributing to his primary opponent and encouraging others to do the same. Enough of his destructive commentary,” said Mitchell, who is retiring at the end of his term. “In my opinion, Steve King does not reflect the values or principles of our conference,” Mitchell added. In his latest incendiary remarks, King offered the Westside Conservative Club in Iowa a defense of his position that abortion should be illegal, including in cases of rape and incest. “What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that?” King said, according to the Des Moines Register. Nadler said he is seeking the public testimony on Sept. 17 from the two Trump era officials who were involved in President Trump’s attempts to persuade former Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reverse his recusal from overseeing the Russia probe. “Corey Lewandowski and Rick Dearborn were prominently featured in the Special Counsel’s description of President Trump’s efforts to obstruct justice by directing then-White House Counsel Don McGahn to fire the Special Counsel, and then by ordering him to lie about it,” Nadler said in a statement (The Hill). Woodstock’s 50th anniversary this weekend inspired these puzzle champions: James Wells, Paul Blumstein (who sent us a photo of his Woodstock ticket!), Donna Nackers, Patrick Kavanagh, Candi Cee, Tim Burrack, Carol Katz, Burt Cohen (who also attended the festival), Allyson Foster, John Donato, Steve Geimann, Rich Gruber, Luther Berg (whose wife, Renée, was one of the concertgoers), Ki Harvey, Jerry Kovar (who was also in the festival crowd) and Noel St. Pre. They knew that the original idea behind “Three Days of Peace and Music” — as conceived in 1969 by four organizing partners — was to make enough money to build a recording studio in Woodstock, N.Y. The legendary music festival attracted an overwhelming 400,000 and 500,000 people near Bethel, N.Y., in Sullivan County, forcing the organizers to make it a free event. They had sold 186,000 advance tickets for a three-day festival they initially hoped might attract perhaps 200,000 people. (The tickets had been priced at $18 in advance for three days, and $24 at the gate.) The Woodstock weekend opened with Richie Havens and closed with Jimi Hendrix. The festival is remembered for great music and a peaceful crowd, but also rainy weather that turned fields to mud, not enough restrooms and first aid stations, a sound system that made it hard for most revelers to hear the bands, an abundance of recreational drugs and a scarcity of food and water. Thus, the correct answer was “all of the above.” The 1970 Oscar-winning documentary “Woodstock,” directed by Michael Wadleigh, is credited with cementing the enduring appreciation for a gathering that became shorthand for an American generation. No Israel Access for Tlaib and Omar Israel decided on Thursday that they would not be allowing U.S. Reps Tlaib and Omar to enter their country for a trip the two congresswomen had planned to embark on this coming weekend. Dissenters and supporters of the two ultra-liberal lawmakers reacted to the news with disappointment in Israel. Many on the left claimed that the move was anti-Islamic – Tlaib and Omar are the only two Muslim congresswomen – but others claimed it was simply their past “criticism” of Israel that prevented them. Some conservatives suggested that Israel’s choice handed Omar and Tlaib a victory, showing that Israel is intimidated by them and that getting banned is probably exactly what they wanted to happen. But there is much more to the story here that should be made expressly clear before Israel chided for their choice. Omar and Tlaib are not just “critical” of Israel; they believe it should not exist. Several months ago, Tlaib claimed that thinking of the Holocaust gave her a “calming feeling” and made her think about all her Palestinian ancestors had done for the Jewish people. Omar has repeatedly suggested that Israel is a nation of greed and corruption, using inarguably anti-Semitic tropes to make her point. Tlaib has also gone on record advocating for a one-state Palestine only solution that would spell the end of Israeli sovereignty. Their biggest problem, however, is their mutual support of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement. To begin with, BDS calls for the total economic ruin of Israel and Israeli businesses, which is not so much “criticism” of a foreign nation as it is active advocation for its utter destruction. Support of BDS also happens to be illegal in Israel, so saying the women could enter was already a making an exception to the law. Then there was the nonprofit group, Mitfah, that had set the itinerary for the congresswomen. Mitfah, a pro-Palestinian, pro-BDS, and avowed anti-Israel group, has previously espoused Nazi-esque ideology. “The Jews used the blood of Christians in the Jewish Passover,” they wrote in a 2013 blog, among other charming anti-Semitic comments. And finally, the itinerary set by Mitfah dismissed the existence of Israel altogether, referring to it instead as Palestine. Though Israel made the wrong decision weeks ago by saying Tlaib and Omar could come, they made the right one yesterday by saying they could not. (More from me at the Washington Examiner) Hong Kong Screams for Democracy as China Closes in Heartbreak and chaos flood the streets of Hong Kong as citizens wave American flags and desperately plead to maintain their last shred of democracy. Protests began weeks ago over legislation that would make it possible for communist mainland China to extradite citizens of Hong Kong for trial, but they’ve continued as a roaring if strained voice for liberty in a land that seems destined to lose it all. Helen Raleigh, who was born in communist China and writes brilliantly about life and liberty in the United States, has more for National Review: “Where does Hong Kong go from here? There is a growing feeling that the end is near. Many point to media reports of China’s increasingly sharp rhetoric and a growing presence of armored vehicles in Shenzhen, the only Chinese city that shares a land border with Hong Kong, as evidence that Beijing is preparing to snuff out the movement by force. Protesters have appealed to the international community and the U.S. in particular for support… Even in the highly unlikely event that the crisis is resolved in a peaceful manner, Hong Kong will never be the same again. The city that Milton Friedman proudly showcased as a shining example of capitalism in his Free to Choose PBS series will be gone, and when it goes, we will all bear witness to one of the greatest tragedies in human history.” Weekend Reading David Marcus explains just how awful the zealotry of a converted progressive is by diving into the recent tirades by ex-conservative Max Boot. (The Washington Examiner) Friday Entertainment Center As the woke war continues to wage in entertainment, it’s important to support artists and shows that refuse to bow down to the outrage mob. One of my favorite comedians, and quite possibly one of the best comics of all time, Dave Chappelle is releasing a new special on Netflix that we all need to watch. The special, “Sticks and Stones,” will drop on Netflix August 26. (The Hollywood Reporter) Speaking of content bending to the politically correct whim of the people, the most recent season of one of my favorites, “GLOW,” took an unfortunate turn towards woke and lame. Sophie Gilbert has her own criticisms of the show’s disappointing third season. (The Atlantic) Woman of the Week in Entertainment Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She is the creator of the brilliant “Fleabag” on Amazon as well as the original showrunner of “Killing Eve” on BBC, both fantastic shows about dynamic women that largely avoid the pitfalls of weepy progressive tropes. She’s got a bright future and is someone to keep your eye on. She’s currently rewriting the script for the troubled “Bond 25” and has a slew of other projects on the horizon as well as a basket of Emmy nominations for work. Good morning,Just 30% of voters nationwide believe it is appropriate
for members of Congress to release the names, addresses, and employers
of people in their District who contributed to Donald Trump’s campaign. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) tweeted out such a donor list last week.A
ScottRasmussen.com survey found that 52% consider it inappropriate and
18% are not sure. Most Republicans and Independents believe such
behavior is inappropriate. Democrats are evenly divided.Among
all voters, 71% believe
it is at least somewhat likely that anti-Trump activists will harass
people on the list. Seventy-two percent (72%) believe the activists will
boycott the employers of people who have given to the president’s
campaign.Perhaps
showing that every political action generates an opposite (but not
necessarily equal) reaction, 82% believe Trump supporters are likely to
support the employers of people who have given to the president’s
campaign.On a different topic, few voters seem bothered by what some consider cultural appropriation. Twenty-one percent (21%)
of voters would be offended by White people wearing Native American costumes for Halloween. White
actors playing characters that were originally another race would
offend 17%. A professional sports team with a name like Redskins or
Seminoles would offend 13%. See the full list.Turning to Election 2020, 77% of potential Democratic voters would be satisfied or excited with Senator Elizabeth Warren as their party’s presidential nominee. Seventy-six percent
(76%) say the same about former Vice President Joe Biden.That’s the first time anybody has topped Biden in this category. However, our daily tracking of the race shows Biden is still the frontrunner. He attracts 28% of the vote. Senator Bernie Sanders is at 14% and Warren at 12%.The
survey also found that 70% would be satisfied with Senator Bernie
Sanders and 65% with Senator Kamala Harris. That reflects a five point

And how each would punctuate a sublime performance with a knowing wink. Ostler ended his column this way: “Proposed: a holiday, Babe ‘n’ Elvis Day, August 16. The difference between this and the normal dead-guy holiday would be that instead of taking the day off, everyone would take the day on. Swing from the heels, sing from the heart, live larger, dream bigger, eat more, sleep less, break new ground, break old rules, break a record, cut a record, cut a swath. according to Hudson the administration siding with Israel against the
U.S. (Nasty insinuation isn’t it?) Of course if one takes BDS at the
meaning of its founders we have two U.S. congresswomen supporting the
destruction of a U.S. ally. And Democrats are supporting them.”
Stacey Matthews: “David Axelrod is blasting reports that some of Joe Biden’s allies want his campaign to scale back his public appearances after a series of embarrassing gaffes he
made this month. ‘You can’t cloister the candidate and win. He either
can cut it or he can’t, and the only way he can prove he can is to be an

One of the attackers was shot dead at the scene. The other was wounded

treated at a hospital as well. Let’s hope he recovers quickly.”

FIRST READ: The Trump administration tries to rewrite the story of America
For
all of the focus this week on the state of the economy, Trump’s tariffs
and the 2020 Democratic horserace, there’s been an even more
significant story staring
us in the face.
The president and his administration are trying to rewrite the story of America.
Earlier
this week, for example, you had acting U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services Director Ken Cuccinelli revising Emma Lazarus’ poem on the
Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”
“Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,” Cuccinelli
said, announcing the Trump administration’s policy to
deny green cards to legal immigrants who use government benefits.

Then yesterday, you had the president of the United States
urging Israel to bar two Democratic lawmakers from entering Israel.
“It would
show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep. Tlaib to visit.
They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that
can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota
and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They
are a disgrace!”
Israel followed through in barring Omar and Tlaib. But this morning, the country
backed down somewhat, allowing Tlaib to visit her grandmother in the West Bank on humanitarian grounds.
Freedom of speech. Freedom of dissent. A country built by immigrants.
Those have been the cornerstones of the American story.
But we’re seeing Trump and his administration
opt for a new foundation.
As NBC’s Benjy Sarlin observed:

remember when Trump criticizing NATO used to send the political world in a panic?
Well, he continues to criticize NATO; it’s just that the outrage has died down.
Here was Trump last night at his rally in New Hampshire:
“Folks.
I got NATO to pay an extra $100 billion. They weren’t paying. They were
delinquent, many nations were, except for seven, many nations weren’t
paying what they were supposed to be paying
so we’re supposed to protect them.”

“[B]ut
I’m tired of paying for other nations anyway, I have to be honest with
you. And today our nation is stronger than ever before, we’re now
stronger than ever before.”
2020 VISION: Biden leads the pack, Sanders falls to third place
A new Fox News poll released on Thursday finds Joe Biden leading the Democratic presidential horserace, followed by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.
The numbers:
- Biden 31 percent (down 2 points since July)
- Warren 20 percent (up 8 points)
- Sanders 10 percent (down 5)
- Harris 8 percent (down 2)
- Booker 3 percent (up 1)
- Buttigieg 3 percent (down 2)
- Yang 3 percent (unchanged)
- Klobuchar 2 percent (down 1)
- O’Rourke 2 percent (unchanged)
No other Democrat gets more than 2 percent in the poll, which is a qualifying survey for the Democratic debates.

from NBC’s embeds: Pete Buttigieg yesterday finished his
two-day tour through southeastern Iowa at a town hall in Oskaloosa when a
woman discussed her current immigration journey. NBC’s Priscilla
Thompson reports, “She’s in the process of applying
for citizenship and worries that she could be deported and taken from
her baby – even though she’s a lawful citizen with a green card.
Buttigieg expressed the need to streamline the immigration process and
address the backlog. ‘It’s time to talk about what
it really means to honor family,’ he said. ‘Part of it is making sure
we want families to stay together and that has implications for our
immigration policy.’”
Julián Castro was asked what his health care policy would entail, since
there’s no information on his website, while at a Working Families Party
Q&A. NBC’s Maura Barrett reports, “Castro said they’re working on
rolling out several plans and it will be up soon;
summarizing, ‘We should strengthen Medicare for the people who are on
it, and then expand it to anybody who wants it.’”
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 26 points.
Twenty-six points.
That’s the margin of
Joe Biden’s national lead among Democratic primary voters who say they prefer a candidate who builds on Barack Obama’s legacy, according to
a new Fox News poll.
Overall,
48 percent of Democratic want a candidate to build on Obama’s legacy,
and Joe Biden gets support from 42 percent of these voters – followed by
Elizabeth Warren at 16 percent, Bernie Sanders
at 9 percent and Kamala Harris at 6 percent.
That’s
compared with 47 percent of Dem primary voters who want to take a
different approach from Obama, and the horserace among these voters

Rashida Tlaib, who seem to represent a long-underrepresented
constituency of terrorist supporters and America-haters, will be barred
from setting foot in Israel after all. Looks like Rashida
Tlaib, to cope, will have to satisfy herself with her sense that the
Holocaust was calming. And with Benjamin Netanyahu having made the
