Wednesday, August 14, 2019 Gun Control Last Friday, “President Donald Trump said… he believes he has influence to rally Republicans around stronger federal background check laws as Congress and the White House work on a response to last weekend’s mass shootings in Texas and Ohio.” AP News See our prior coverage of the issue here and here. The Flip Side From the Left The left calls for universal background checks, and restrictions on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines. “America’s relationship with guns is changing, and people, more than ever, want someone to ‘do something.’ These new attitudes will transcend the red/blue divide and provide a litmus test of our political leaders’ values. Republicans increasingly understand that they are on the wrong side of history and risk political ruin in the suburbs if they do not find a way to distance themselves from perceived complacency… “Even before the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Gallup recorded the highest level of support for stricter gun laws in 25 years. The share of voters very dissatisfied with the nation’s gun laws has nearly doubled from 2008 (21 percent) to 2019 (40 percent)… In a recent GQR survey of 2,000 likely 2020 voters, more than 1 in 4 say their views on guns have changed within the past five years. This number includes 1 in 3 Democrats, but also 1 in 4 independents and 1 in 5 Republicans. Among these voters, 78 percent — and 70 percent of Republicans — have moved toward supporting stronger gun laws.” Anna Greenberg and David Walker, Washington Post “It’s naive to think that any single policy or program can prevent every form of gun violence, ranging from intimate partner violence to gang drive-by homicides, suicides and mall-rampage atrocities. Yet each form of such violence involves one common mechanism: a gun. We can reduce these risks through a suite of evidence-based policies that do two things — create more careful licensing for gun purchasers and more effectively regulate teenage and young adult gun buyers… “Avis, Hertz and their competitors in the rental car business have figured out that young drivers are greater safety risks than their older friends and relatives, and, consequently, implement more rigorous standards before renting out a car. Why not do the same for guns?… These solutions can help reduce gun violence without infringing upon lawful gun owners’ interests and rights.” Cassandra Crifasi, Harold Pollack and Daniel Webster, Washington Post “When the House of Representatives passed two bills in February that would require background checks on more gun sales and extend the wait time for each application from three days to 10, a Pennsylvania representative said he voted no because ‘universal background checks’ would be a ‘universal annoyance to law-abiding Americans.’ Not so. A responsible supporter of the Second Amendment accepts the ‘annoyance’ of a few more days’ wait in exchange for greater confidence that citizens with felony records or severe mental illness or restraining orders [are] being identified and denied’… “These bills — H.R. 8 and 1112 — do not threaten the right to bear arms; they threaten purchases by people who pose a risk to others. Law-abiding citizens should welcome reforms that snag those whose crimes smear all gun-owners’ reputations.” Editorial Board, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Some argue that “[banning] the large-capacity magazine ban may be the highest priority: Such devices, which augment the lethality of semiautomatic weapons, were involved in half of the 62 mass shootings between 1982 and 2012, according to a 2013 report for Mother Jones. A 100-round drum of bullets enabled the Dayton shooter to fire 41 shots in less than 30 seconds. ‘It is fundamentally problematic,’ the city’s police chief observed, ‘to have that level of weaponry in a civilian environment, unregulated’… “In emphasizing measures to stop mass public shootings, we do not forget that the vast majority of gun-related death occurs in — alas — more ordinary contexts. Suicide, street crime and domestic violence are chronic problems, and they also cry out for intelligent response. But what we must refer to as ‘conventional’ homicide has waned even as mass public shootings have increased. Swift action aimed specifically at this socially destabilizing phenomenon is a must, lest our public spaces become places of permanent latent anxiety, subject to random lethal attack.” Editorial Board, Washington Post Former Vice President Joe Biden writes, “Many police departments have reported an increase in criminals using assault weapons since 2004. And multiple analyses of the data around mass shootings provide evidence that, from 1994 to 2004, the years when assault weapons and high-capacity magazines were banned, there were fewer mass shootings — fewer deaths, fewer families needlessly destroyed. There’s overwhelming data that shootings committed with assault weapons kill more people than shootings with other types of guns. And that’s the point… “Shooters looking to inflict mass carnage choose assault weapons with high-capacity magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. They choose them because they want to kill as many people as possible without having to stop and reload. In Dayton, where the police responded immediately and neutralized the shooter within about 30 seconds, he was still able to massacre nine people and injure more than two dozen others because he carried an AR-style weapon with a magazine capable of holding 100 rounds. We have to get these weapons of war off our streets.” Joe Biden, New York Times From the Right The right is generally skeptical of both universal background checks and ‘red flag’ laws. “Trump is right, in the abstract, to call for improved background checks. This should mostly involve improving our current system, which is overloaded and imperfect. Congress, though, should not expand the background check program to include private sales. Under a proposal considered in 2013, a private gun owner who wanted to list his revolver on Craigslist would need to go through the same background check system that gun stores use. This infringes too greatly on law-abiding gun owners… “Tom Coburn… proposed a clever update to the system. It would allow would-be gun buyers to document that they are not prohibited from owning a gun. Private sellers, including sellers at gun shows, would be able to demand such proof from a prospective buyer. This would make it much harder for criminals to buy guns.” Editorial Board, Washington Examiner “One cannot uphold the Constitution and pass ‘universal background checks.’ By explicit design, the federal government is prohibited from acting outside of the limited set of powers that the Constitution has granted to it. None of those powers permit it to superintend private firearms transactions that take place between two residents of a single state. Because it limits its remit to the regulation of federally licensed businesses and of commerce between the states, the existing background-check system does not fall afoul of the limits that have been placed on Washington. Because they explode that remit, universal background checks absolutely do… “Equally problematic is that universal background checks require the creation of a national gun registry that can be used to check compliance… Americans should resist this development robustly, for the history of gun registries in America is the history of private citizens handing over great gobs of information to the government for no discernible reward. A government that knows where all the guns are is a government that can stage a confiscation drive — or, in the Orwellian parlance of modern gun-controllers, a ‘mandatory buyback’ drive.” The Editors, National Review Regarding a ‘red flag’ law, “supporters twist themselves into knots to explain how purportedly ‘well crafted’ [gun violence restraining orders] can comport with rudimentary, fundamental principles of due process… But even accepting the premise of a ‘properly drafted’ GVRO law, there is simply no escaping the reality that the entire GVRO procedure flips due process on its head where a core constitutional right is at stake… GVRO advocates argue that the burden of proof must still fall on the party petitioning to confiscate the respondent’s firearms — but the procedural reality is that the petitioner is still the first mover and, after that initial move, the onus shifts to the respondent to demonstrate his innocence.” Josh Hammer, Daily Wire “In the absence of a red-flag law, a person contemplating homicide or suicide might speak to a friend or family member and be dissuaded from that course of action. But now that person may fear that the authorities will be tipped off. As a result, some of these individuals may not seek help and instead may go on to kill themselves or others. Police are also often depressed on the job, and it’s not right for them to worry that they might lose their jobs if they share their feelings… “When people really pose a clear danger to themselves or others, they should be confined to a mental-health facility. Simply denying them the legal right to buy a gun isn’t a serious remedy. If you think you are any more likely to stop criminals from getting guns than illegal drugs, you are mistaken. The same drug dealers sell both, and gangs are a major source of guns. Mentally ill individuals can also use other weapons, such as cars.” Thomas Massie and John R. Lott, Jr., National Review Some, however, argue that “Trump and the GOP should advocate for practical red flag laws that empower individuals and encourage the community to be on guard and vigilant, while bolstering law enforcement’s ability to act when need be. A well-drafted law will create strict definitions of what does and does not qualify as mental unfitness, require substantial evidence of mental unfitness and/or violence, and allow the individual in question to appeal any red-flag designation… Law enforcement should act only after community members provide evidence of violent behavior or mental unfitness.” Kaylee McGhee, Washington Examiner Others note that “the least shocking revelation about the El Paso mass shooting is that the culprit’s parents divorced eight years ago. He is yet another mass shooter among that many who did not live full time with his dad… here’s something we can do. It doesn’t involve laws or policies or any other form of input from bureaucrats in Washington. We can address the problem ourselves in a very straightforward way: by raising our own kids. This plan will not be enough to prevent every potential act of brutality or terrorism, but it will have a much wider and deeper impact than any piece of legislation ever could. The negative consequences of fatherlessness are well established. The solution, on an individual level, doesn’t get much simpler. Stay married. Be present. Raise your kids. Love your kids.” Matt Walsh, Daily Wire A libertarian’s take “Buyback programs, which have been tried in Australia and multiple U.S. cities, didn’t take even a third of the available guns out of circulation. That would leave the United States with more than 250 million guns still around. Getting at the rest of that stock would require drastic measures… In other words, seriously reducing America’s gun problem would require exactly the sort of policing and prosecutorial tactics currently lumped under the rubric of ‘mass incarceration’ — only much, much more so. As always, the burden would disproportionately fall on the disadvantaged in urban areas with large police forces. Though this obviously isn’t the intent, calls to prevent mass shootings through tighter gun control are in practical effect calls to lock up more low-income and minority young men.” Megan McArdle, Washington Post On the bright side… Duckling crossing causes adorable traffic jam in Maine. President Trump on Tuesday talked up the economy and his tariffs on Chinese imports, telling a Pennsylvania audience that he brought the U.S. steel industry back from the grave. During a 67-minute speech at a petrochemical plant near Pittsburgh, the president told workers dressed in yellow vests and hard hats that his tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from China increased the market for American steel, reviving U.S. manufacturing. “Steel was dead. Your business was dead,” he told his audience, “and now your business is thriving.” The president’s scattershot and improvised remarks – a stream-of-consciousness performance that interrupted his New Jersey vacation this week – took place hours after the administration backtracked on Trump’s threat to add new tariffs to additional categories of Chinese goods by Sept. 1. Worried about a slowing economy, a struggling manufacturing sector and the imperative of continued U.S. consumer spending, the administration said Chinese exports subject to additional 10 percent tariffs will get a reprieve or be exempted for at least four months. The action cheered financial markets (CNBC). Trump’s decision to defer new punishment until after the bulk of the U.S. holiday shopping season reflects mounting fears that the trade war could choke off economic expansion — and that it will not be resolved anytime soon ( The Hill). “We’re doing this for Christmas season, just in case some of the tariffs would have an impact on U.S. customers,” the president said. Although the visit to Monaca, Pa., was billed as an official event paid for by the taxpayers, it was by any other appraisal a reelection rally in which Trump derided former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who are currently competing for the chance to try to unseat him. The Hill: Trump blasts news media, Biden, Warren in Pennsylvania. Trump reminisced that he won Beaver County, Pa., by 28 points in 2016, when in fact he beat Hillary Clinton by 18.5 points, according to local election officials. He confided to his audience that his campaign “just got numbers in Florida,” adding without describing his internal polling that the results were better than he expected. He said he has always loved “trucks” and “cranes,” but doesn’t like windmills. He’s wealthy, but complained the presidency is costing him $3 billion to $5 billion (billion, with a “b”) in legal fees. And at 2:41 p.m., the president gazed toward the rear of the room and said, “That’s a lot of people back there for like an 11 o’clock speech.” Trump’s skimming on and off his teleprompter presented a narrative of fact and fiction along with musings about the past more than pledges for the future. The president narrowly won Pennsylvania in 2016 and he worries that Biden, born in Scranton and well known in the state, could make it tough if the former vice president is the Democratic nominee. Of late, Trump has taken aim at Biden’s age, his mental acuity, his stamina and his long habit while in politics of misspeaking, often in tangled sentence fragments. The Washington Post: Do Biden’s gaffes pale in comparison to things Trump says? The New York Times: At chemical plant under construction, Trump builds list of grievances. In the course of an hour, the president managed to deliver a message of economic renewal he wanted western Pennsylvania supporters to remember on Election Day: “This would’ve never happened without me.” |

LEADING THE DAY |
POLITICS & CAMPAIGNS: 2020 Democrats are taking a page out of the president’s playbook as they look for a leg up in the race for the party’s nomination: taking shots at the media. As Jonathan Easley reports, Democratic presidential candidates are airing their grievances against the media over what they view as unfair coverage. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has led the way. His accused the The Washington Post of bias and voiced complaints about Amazon and Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s CEO who also owns the newspaper. The Post maintains that Bezos has no influence over day-to-day editorial decisions, but Sanders hasn’t limited his barbs at the Bezos-owned publication, similarly going after The New York Times for their campaign coverage. Sanders is by no means the only Democrat to lodge complaints. Other campaigns, including those of former Vice President Joe Biden and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) have also vented frustration with what they view as a focus on trivial gaffes or an obsession with horse race politics over substantial policies. The rhetoric from the Democratic contenders comes after years of defending the news media from attacks against Trump, which Democrats have described as an assault on First Amendment rights and an undermining of public trust in an institution they have described as one of the pillars of democracy. Dan Balz: For Joe Biden, some lessons from Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign? David Ignatius: Democrats need to stop running scared on foreign policy. |

> September debate: Another Democrat has qualified partly for the September debate stage. Tom Steyer, the billionaire entrepreneur and climate change activist, revealed on Tuesday that he has reached the requisite 130,000 individual donors needed for inclusion for the next round of debates.
Steyer gained more than 48,000 donors in the last week alone as he aggressively spent on digital advertising after joining the race just over a month ago. Democrats have until Aug. 28 to qualify for the debates on Sept. 12 and 13 in Houston.
Steyer, who has been a vocal proponent of impeaching the president, is also on the cusp of qualifying with polling. He has hit 2 percent in three separate polls, needing one more to qualify. Nine candidates have already reached the donor and polling threshold and will partake in the debate, with Steyer and two others — former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) — reaching the donor prerequisite (The Hill).
FiveThirtyEight: Who will make the debate stage in September and who might miss it?
The Hill: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock knocks DNC rules after Steyer reaches donor threshold for fall debates.
The Hill: Julián Castro buys ‘Fox & Friends’ ad to send ‘message’ to Trump on El Paso shooting.
> Hickenlooper out?: After months of struggling to gain traction in the 2020 Democratic race, former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper is looking seriously at dropping his presidential bid and launching one for the Senate instead.
As Reid Epstein reports for The New York Times:
“Mr. Hickenlooper, who is mired at the bottom of public polling of the presidential race, hopped into Senator Michael Bennet’s car on Friday night in this Northern Iowa town to discuss his impending decision, said Democrats familiar with the discussion, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe confidential talks.”
“Officials who have been in discussions with the Hickenlooper campaign said Tuesday that the former two-term governor is giving serious consideration to switching to the Senate race but stressed that a final decision has not yet been made. Short of a massive change in political momentum, Mr. Hickenlooper is certain to fail to qualify for the next round of presidential debates in September, an additional blow to a campaign struggling to attract attention and financial contributions.”
A Hickenlooper Senate run would be a boon to national Democrats and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who has lobbied Hickenlooper to make the move to run against Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), who is viewed as one of the most vulnerable Senate Republicans up for reelection next year.
Bloomberg: Republican donors told to wait as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo considers Kansas Senate run.
The New York Times: Stacey Abrams will not run for president in 2020, focusing instead on fighting voter suppression.
Elsewhere on the political scene … Former Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) is making a trip to New Hampshire this week as he looks at potentially launching a primary bid against Trump. Sanford left for the first-in-the-nation primary state on Tuesday and is expected to hold meetings with key activists as he considers a bid, which he would center on spending and fiscal responsibility (The Associated Press) … Former MLB pitcher Curt Schilling is considering a run for Congress in Arizona, and captured encouragement from Trump, who tweeted news of a potential run by the former Philadelphia Phillies starter is “terrific!” (The Hill).

CONGRESS: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and a handful of House Democrats returned to Washington on Tuesday to pressure Senate Republican leaders to take up gun reform legislation following a string of deadly mass shootings around the country.
Tuesday’s event in the Capitol highlights a major challenge facing the Democratic gun reformers: how to maintain enough pressure on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Republicans to act on the issue in September, even against the backdrop of the long summer break and a frenetic news cycle. Lawmakers are slated to be out of town until Sept. 9, and McConnell closed the door last week on the possibility of returning to town early to work on gun violence legislation.
© Getty Images Democrats have long fought for an expansion of background checks before gun sales, which passed through the House in February, and they’re hoping the public outcry surrounding back-to-back shootings in El Paso and Ohio will compel Senate Republicans to consider the bill, but they have their work cut out. McConnell has been a long-time opponent of Second Amendment restrictions, including the background check expansion, but he did mention background checks and “red flag” laws as two areas they will examine over the next month before lawmakers return to Washington (The Hill). While it remains unpopular in Republican circles, Democrats have been vocal in support of enacting a ban on sales of assault weapons, particularly those in the House and among 2020 Democrats. Biden has been front-and-center of that argument, including in an op-ed in The New York Times on Monday, pointing to his work to pass the 1994 assault weapons ban (The Hill). |
IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKES |
WHITE HOUSE & ADMINISTRATION: Attorney General William Barr directed the Bureau of Prisons on Tuesday to temporarily reassign the warden at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York to the bureau’s Northeast Regional Office pending the outcome of the FBI and inspector general investigations into the apparent suicide of Jeffrey Epstein, 66, over the weekend. Two corrections officers on duty when Epstein died allegedly fell asleep and are suspected of falsifying records. They were placed on leave (The New York Times) … The New York City Medical Examiner’s Office has not released findings from Epstein’s autopsy, conducted Sunday (The Associated Press) … Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, wants the government to “rip up” the non-prosecution agreement reached with Epstein in 2008 to uncover more information about “co-conspirators” who allegedly helped a sexual predator break the law (The Hill). And federal officials face intense pressure to explain events as conspiracy theories multiply on social media (The Hill) … The New York Fire Department is probing how details of Epstein’s death appeared in the online message board 4chan about 40 minutes before the news of his death broke, and whether a paramedic was the tipster (The New York Post). … Mark Epstein, the younger brother of the multimillionaire, is in the public eye because of his business ties to his sibling and the prospect that he might eventually inherit his assets (The Daily Beast). > U.S. budget flows red: The government collected $2.9 trillion in receipts thus far in this fiscal year, which is a 3 percent increase. However, it spent 8 percent more than it took in, leaving a sea of red ink. The gap widened 27 percent in the first 10 months of the fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30 (The Wall Street Journal). Congress and the president completed a two-year budget framework along with a hike in the nation’s borrowing limit before the August recess, meaning few in Washington are disposed to wring their hands about deficit spending until after the 2020 election.> Defense: Mark Esper just completed his first international trip as Defense secretary and was well received on the international stage. He believes North Korea’s missile tests are likely to continue, and despite Kim Jong Un’s objections, joint military exercises by the United States and South Korea will remain in place, he said. Ellen Mitchell rounds up takeaways from the trip (The Hill). |

➔ Hong Kong: Flights restarted at the Hong Kong airport today as pro-democracy protesters apologized after violence erupted on Tuesday when riot police clashed with young demonstrators. Footage of the confrontations dominated media coverage and led to a series of statements from U.S. lawmakers from both parties warning China against escalating the confrontation (The Hill). Trump on Tuesday described it as a “tough” situation and urged calm, but said nothing publicly about how China should respond (The Hill). Five people were detained in the latest disturbances, bringing the number of arrests since the protests began in June to more than 600 (Reuters). China today compared the demonstrators to “terrorists.” |

I believed that all of my interactions and relationships were always welcomed and consensual.” … The AP report prompted two music companies to cancel appearances by Domingo and the Los Angeles Opera said on Tuesday it will launch an investigation. ➔ State Watch: A coalition of 29 states and cities on Tuesday sued to block the Trump administration from easing restrictions on coal-burning power plants. And finally … We’re applauding a spirit of generosity this summer in Georgia. Grant Rivera, school superintendent in Marietta donated his $10,000 bonus to help youngsters in his school district afford college applications. According to CNN, Grant requested in his contract that any bonus he received be repurposed to benefit students and subsequently began working with the college adviser and scholarship coordinator at Marietta High School to come up with the best way his bonus could support college access. “When a student applies to college early action or early decision, we know that a student has greater opportunity for both college acceptance and financial aid,” Rivera said. “I want to leverage my bonus to motivate and support students who might not otherwise have the opportunity for college access.” |

Wednesday, August 14, 2019 I’ll confess to not taking any of the “top” news stories of yesterday seriously. Trump got into an insult war with the Mooch that zero voters will care about, Chris Cuomo proves that some toxic masculinity has survived the feminist purge in the Democratic Party, and Bill De Blasio, a man best-known for being hated in his own city and killing a groundhog, declares his Presidential run will continue in perpetuity. On Mooch: Mooch says Trump’s “unacceptable” rhetoric is “dividing us,” Trump calls Mooch “a nervous neurotic wreck.” Very Important Politics in 2019, everyone. (Fox News) On the Godfather wars: A roundup of all the best Tweets that treat this with the seriousness it deserves and Cuomo’s rank on the New York trash talk scorecard. (The Federalist) On Bill De Blasio: Who am I kidding, here’s a video of Mayor Bill dropping a groundhog in Staten Island to its later death from internal injury.(YouTube) On to the real news that should be making headlines instead! Updates from Hong Kong Flights continue to be cancelled out of Hong Kong International Airport as police have violently suppressed the protesters encamped there. And the Communist regime in Beijing seems determined to escalate the crackdown on what is perhaps the most consequential resistance against it since Tiananmen Square. ABC News: “After weeks of issuing warnings, but deferring to Hong Kong authorities to quell protests, Beijing has hinted at a more assertive posture. Chinese paramilitary police were seen in video released by the state holding exercises in Shenzhen, China, which sits across the border from Hong Kong. Images circulated online showing a convoy of armored personnel carriers from the People’s Armed Police traveling to the site. U.S. President Donald Trump meanwhile took to Twitter to say that U.S. intelligence ‘has informed us that the Chinese Government is moving troops to the Border with Hong Kong. Everyone should be calm and safe!’ Earlier on Tuesday, Trump told reporters he hoped the situation in Hong Kong ‘works out for everybody, including China, by the way,’ and that ‘nobody gets killed.’” This interview on Neil Cavuto’s show with my Independent Women’s Forum colleague Claudia Rosett, who is on the ground in Hong Kong, is a must-watch. Justice Department Investigates Irregularities at Epstein Jail Two guards have been placed on administrative leave and the warden has been reassigned at the jail that previously housed Jeffrey Epstein, as part of the DOJ’s ongoing investigation into Epstein’s suicide. From The Wall Street Journal: “Two jail staffers who were guarding Jeffrey Epstein’s unit the night he died were placed on leave Tuesday, and the warden of the New York detention facility was reassigned as the Justice Department intensified its investigation of the disgraced financier’s death.” Side note: even if these guys committed atrocious negligence, it’ll take more than a year to fire them – if their bosses manage it at all – because of our tangled web of civil service laws. Man Arrested for Allegedly Firing Shots into ICE Building It made almost no headlines, but a suspect was arrested in the fourth violent incident perpetrated against ICE and Border Patrol facilities. Will we have a “national conversation” about toning down rhetoric like “concentration camps”? Doubtful. From Washington Examiner: “Police in San Antonio arrested a man early Tuesday morning in connection with gunshots fired through the windows of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in the city, according to the agency. Local law enforcement responded around 3 a.m. CT Tuesday to shots fired at the ICE field office located north of Interstate 410 near Brookhaven Drive, the FBI confirmed in a statement provided to the Washington Examiner.” Fashion Moment of the Week Apparently some of you, Lord knows why, look forward to my fall fashion takes every year. I’m happy to let you know that my five fashion buys you can wear now in the waning days of summer, and later during boot-and-PSL season, have dropped on The Federalist. Those key transitional purchases include 90s slip dresses and blazers, but you’ll have to click to find out the rest of my recs (with links to budget items that fit the bill)! Wednesday Links Facebook paid transcribing contractors to transcribe audio they allegedly don’t collect of our conversations. (Bloomberg) Some of Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods, supposed to go into effect September 1, have been delayed until December. But the U.S.’s new tough stance may have hurt China more than they want to let on. (City Journal) Ken Cuccinelli gave a history lesson on immigration law, the administration’s proposed “public charge” rule, and the State of Liberty on NPR. But, surprise, surprise, that’s not how it was reported. (The Federalist) I know neither party seems to care but we just set a deficit spending record. (CNS News) Police shut down parts of downtown DC and arrested a man involved in a “domestic incident” who was initially feared to be carrying a weapon yesterday. Fortunately, after giving residents a scare, the situation was ended without bloodshed and the alleged firearm was nowhere to be found. (Washington Post) And finally, because it’s Hump Day: everything you didn’t need to know about Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s breakup from stalwart culture editor (and frequent BRIGHT fill-in editor) Emily Jashinsky. POLITICO Playbook: Behind the scenes of Trump’s new gun talks

DRIVING THE DAY
BEHIND THE SCENES … QUIET GUN TALKS AT THE WHITE HOUSE … We were hoping to save this news for this morning, but the NYT beat us to the punch on a few details Tuesday night toward the middle of their gun story. Aides to several key senators in both parties have been meeting with senior White House officials about gun control legislation in what as far as we know is the first serious, substantive contact between the Hill and the administration about the issue.
HERE ARE THE SENATORS INVOLVED: Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.). Their staffers have been meeting with Joe Grogan’s Domestic Policy Council and W.H. leg affairs director Eric Ueland. They’ve discussed where Manchin-Toomey legislation stands and what changes have been made. Each senator has also spoken with President DONALD TRUMP privately. The WHITE HOUSE has also had in-person contact with aides to Rep. DOUG COLLINS (R-Ga.), the top Republican on Judiciary.
MULTIPLE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE TALKS say Ueland is taking control of the situation — a hopeful sign if you’re looking for progress. We spoke to a number of people on the Hill and in the White House who were hoping this effort is headquartered in the legislative affairs shop, and not captained by the gaggle of other White House officials who try to insert themselves into legislative issues. Ueland and his team have the bandwidth and connections to navigate the Hill. REMEMBER: USMCA has a prayer because professionals with experience — WH leg affairs — are dealing with it.
OF COURSE, there’s still plenty of skepticism — including among many of those involved in these talks — that anything will happen.
A GROUP OF TOP WHITE HOUSE AIDES is planning to travel to Bedminster, N.J., in the coming days to brief the president on the meetings and the progress on potential gun legislation, sources told us.
NEW … ON A SIMILAR FRONT … BURGESS EVERETT: “GOP Sen. Martha McSally drafts bill making domestic terrorism a federal crime”: “Sen. Martha McSally is seeking to make domestic terrorism a distinct federal crime, the latest sign that Republicans are increasingly serious about crafting a legislative response to recent mass shootings in Texas, Ohio and California.
“The Arizona Republican is aiming to close a loophole in the law that prevents federal authorities from specifically punishing domestic terrorism, according to a discussion draft circulated to other offices. McSally, an Air Force veteran, said in releasing the draft that ‘domestic terrorism is in our backyard and we need to call it and treat it under the law the same as other forms of terrorism.’ Authorities frequently charge domestic terrorism suspects with other offenses.” POLITICO
BIG MOVE FOR PENTAGON … WAPO’S ASHLEY PARKER: “Top Pence aide will move to Pentagon as chief spokeswoman”: “Alyssa Farah is leaving her job as Vice President Pence’s spokeswoman at the end of the month and will join the Defense Department as press secretary, starting in September.
“Farah began her tenure at the White House almost two years ago, as Pence’s press secretary, and for the past six months held that post while also serving as his communications director. During her time in Pence’s office, she also served as a senior adviser, accompanying the vice president on both foreign and domestic trips.
“Farah, 30, previously worked on Capitol Hill for five years, serving as the spokeswoman for the conservative House Freedom Caucus and before that as communications director for Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.).
“The Pentagon, like many other parts of the Trump administration, has had an uneasy relationship with the media. … In Pence’s office, Farah had a reputation as a professional who generally had a good working relationship with the White House press corps. At the Pentagon she will be challenged to do the same with the reporters who cover the Defense Department and as new Secretary Mark T. Esper, who assumed his post last month, determines how he will interact with the news media. Farah said she plans to hold frequent briefings.” WaPo

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK … SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI WARNS ON U.K.-U.S. TRADE AGREEMENT AFTER JOHN BOLTON REMARKS IN U.K.: “The Good Friday Agreement serves as the bedrock of peace in Northern Ireland and as a beacon of hope for the entire world. After centuries of conflict and bloodshed, the world has witnessed a miracle of reconciliation and progress made possible because of this transformative accord.
“Whatever form it takes, Brexit cannot be allowed to imperil the Good Friday Agreement, including the seamless border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, epecially now, as the first generation born into the hope of Good Friday 21 years ago comes into adulthood. We cannot go back.
“If Brexit undermines the Good Friday accord, there will be no chance of a U.S.-U.K. trade agreement passing the Congress. The peace of the Good Friday Agreement is treasured by the American people and will be fiercely defended on a bicameral and bipartisan basis in the United States Congress.”

“Those disclosures came on Tuesday as the two employees were placed on administrative leave and the warden of the jail, the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, was temporarily reassigned, pending the outcome of the investigation into Mr. Epstein’s death, the Justice Department announced.” NYT

2020 WATCH …
— MARC CAPUTO and NATASHA KORECKI: “Biden does cleanup with Latinos after ‘get in line’ remark”: “Biden said at the July 31 Democratic debate that undocumented immigrants need to ‘get in line’ and that the country has been right to ‘cherry-pick’ high-skilled immigrants, notably those with advanced degrees.
“That language, more commonly used by conservatives, triggered widespread criticism from immigrant rights activists, some of whom said the former vice president was echoing ‘Republican talking points’ … The campaign quickly embarked on damage control. Aides assuaged aggrieved activists, and Biden had a closed-door meeting with Latino leaders in San Diego before his speech at the UnidosUS conference last week.” POLITICO
— HICK FOR SENATE? … NYT’S REID EPSTEIN in Clear Lake, Iowa: “Former Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado is in discussions about ending his presidential bid and entering the race for his state’s Republican-held Senate seat, potentially giving Democrats a strong candidate in a race they must win to have hopes of retaking the chamber in 2021, according to four Democrats familiar with his thinking.
“Mr. Hickenlooper, who is mired at the bottom of public polling of the presidential race, hopped into Senator Michael Bennet’s car on Friday night in this Northern Iowa town to discuss his impending decision, said Democrats familiar with the discussion, who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe confidential talks.
“The two drove around Clear Lake for about 20 minutes ahead of the Wing Ding dinner, a Democratic fund-raiser that drew 21 presidential candidates. Aides and advisers to the two men, who have been both allies and rivals over their careers in Colorado politics, declined to reveal what was discussed.” NYT
— DAVID SIDERS: “Beto O’Rourke resumes campaign amid calls for his exit”: “For more than a week since the shooting, O’Rourke served as a passionate voice for his border city and for immigrants more generally, with his wrenching criticism of President Donald Trump. And if O’Rourke had wanted to run for Senate, this would have been the time to make the jump — summoned home by tragedy, not limping back amid a sputtering campaign.
“But O’Rourke has never expressed interest in running for Senate this year, after his near-miss loss to Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. The El Paso massacre only redoubled his resolve to campaign against Trump, according to sources close to his campaign, while persistent calls for him to run for Senate exasperated his supporters.” POLITICO

TRUMP ISOLATED ON HONG KONG … NAHAL TOOSI, ELIANA JOHNSON and MAYA KING: “At the White House … aides to Trump, including his economic advisers, are watching events closely and worry that it could spiral out of control, according to a current and a former White House official. It’s not clear what, if anything, Trump wants to do in response, the sources said.
“An administration official said the Hong Kong crisis was increasingly reminiscent of another infamous case in Chinese history when democracy activists were violently crushed.

“The jobless rate in Chinese cities again rebounded in July to its highest level since regular reporting on the data began, as employers turned cautious. Other key economic readings for the month, including factory production, consumption and property investment, came in much lower than expected.
“[E]conomists say the more-than-yearlong trade conflict with the U.S. has dented market confidence, forcing manufacturers to scale back production and investment, and prompting consumers to tighten purse strings.” WSJ
— GOOD POINT from AP’s Paul Wiseman and Christopher Rugaber on Trump’s decision Tuesday to delay tariffs until after Christmas: “Trump has repeatedly argued that his tariffs are hurting China, not American consumers. MEDIAWATCH — “CBS and Viacom to Reunite in Victory for Shari Redstone,” by NYT’s Edmund Lee: “After more than a decade apart, CBS and Viacom, both under her control, agreed to merge on Tuesday in a deal that will reunite a roster of once-mighty media businesses. Viacom’s Paramount film studio and MTV and Nickelodeon cable networks will be added to the broadcast giant CBS and the book publisher Simon & Schuster. The deal will allow the company to invest more in streaming, which is the future of entertainment. …
“The combination of CBS and Viacom is a victory for Ms. Redstone, the leader of a family business that has led the two media giants for two decades. The two companies were once a single entity, called Viacom, until they were split up in 2006, and their reunification was seen as necessary at a time when television audiences have eroded. Good morning,Medicare
for All proposals made by Bernie Sanders and others would ban private
health insurance in the United States. If such plans were implemented, 54% of voters believe the government should buy out the shareholders of existing health insurance companies.
A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that just 10% believe the
government should simply force the companies into bankruptcy. It
is unclear how expensive it would be to buy out the shareholders of the
nation’s health insurance companies. However, 13% of voters own share
in health
insurance companies. Another 18% may have such shares in their
investment portfolio or retirement accounts.Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters rate their current health insurance as good or excellent. Just 10% rate it as poor. The number of voters believing President Trump will be re-elected in 2020 continues to grow. Sixty-three percent (63%) now believe it is at least somewhat likely President Trump will win in 2020. That’s up
from 60% in July, 57% in May, 54% in April, 50% in March and 46% in February. The
latest figures include 29% who say the president is Very Likely to be
re-elected and 15% who think that outcome is Not at All Likely. While expectations for the president have increased, his Job Approval ratings have remained steady. For more than six months, every daily poll has shown public approval within two percentage points of 46%. This suggests that growing expectations of a Trump victory may stem from shifting perceptions of his potential challengers.Thirty-six percent (36%) of U.S. Adults believe Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide. William Jacobson: “WHAT A MOTLEY CRUE –Tommy Lee rant: “You Trumpsters better pray that liberals never gain control of the WH again…‘”
Kemberlee Kaye: “CNN’s Chris Cuomo went completely berserk after being called “Fredo.” The internet can’t decide if he was justified or if his actions were way over the top.”
Leslie Eastman: “I
am thrilled to see the bald eagles are making a big comeback, as is the
American economy. President Trump is right to make the roll-back of
needless and onerous regulations a priority, including those related to
the Endangered Species Act.
While environmental protection is important, the rules have been abused
too long by anti-capitalist, green activists in the various government
agencies. At 50 years, it is high time we took a close look at the
implementation of the “Endangered Species Act”.”
David Gerstman: “Prof. Jacobson blogged about
Joe Biden’s ongoing problem with gaffes. He observed, “And once a
narrative takes hold, it may be hard to stop.” Think about Hillary
Clinton’s frailty at
the 9/11 memorial in 2016. That may have done more to damage her
candidacy than ever her email scandal. If these gaffes keep going on,
they will hurt Biden in the same way. Quoting from The New York Times, Brit Hume observed,
“Let this sink in: Biden ‘has expressed frustration to allies that his
candidacy will suffer if he is judged too harshly on the slip-ups, which
he thinks he can do little to correct so long as he is being true to
himself.’” I guess that if this is true, the Democrats probably won’t
have to worry about his being the nominee.”
Stacey Matthews: “So Stacey Abrams has reportedly decided she won’t run for president in 2020. Darn.”
Samantha Mandeles: “Good news: On August 12, the California State Board of Education issued a statement on
the draft model curriculum for Ethnic Studies, which has been widely
criticized for its anti-Semitism and anti-Israel propaganda. In the
statement, the SBE declared, “A model curriculum should be accurate,
free of bias, appropriate for all learners in our diverse state, and
align with Governor Newsom’s vision of a California for all. The current
draft model curriculum falls short and needs to be substantially
redesigned.” This is a win for academic integrity and honest

MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: As Dems battle each other, Trump’s greatest ally is time
Yes, President Trump’s job rating is in the low- to mid-40s – danger zone for any incumbent.
And yes, one online poll has him underwater in 10 states he carried in 2016 (though don’t forget he was pretty unpopular during that election, too).
But here in Aug. 2019, don’t lose sight of what’s probably Trump’s greatest advantage for 2020: time.
The president began eyeing re-election – and raising money for it – just hours after his inauguration in Jan. 2017.
By comparison, the eventual Democratic nominee will have just four months to exclusively focus on the general election– maybe a couple of months more if the nomination gets wrapped up before the July 2020 convention.

What’s more, we still have more than 170 days until the Iowa caucuses (which take place AFTER the Super Bowl for an NFL season that hasn’t started its first regular-season game).
Super Tuesday is more than 200 days away.
And the final primaries, in June 2020, are nearly 300 days from now.
So we have a long way to go.
The assessment from the Economist’s G. Elliot Morris seems about right:
“Pundits have spun the wheel WAY too hard from ‘A good economy will surely save Trump in 2020’ to ‘Bad approval ratings among registered voters in this one poll will surely doom Trump in 2020’. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle and tilted toward the latter.”
What about his gaffes?
Last week, there was a lot of discussion about Joe Biden’s gaffes – mangling his words about opportunity for “poor kids” and “white kids,” and saying that he met with the Parkland students as vice president (when that tragedy happened when he was out of office).
And gaffe patrol has been a time-honored tradition of political reporting – whether it was for Bush 43, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton or Mitt Romney.
But if Biden’s gaffes were substantial news, why wasn’t there the same level of discussion on what President Trump said yesterday in Pennsylvania?
- “That’s
a lot of people back there for a — like an 11 o’clock speech. That’s a
lot of people. (Laughter.) That’s a lot.” (In fact, the speech was
after
2:00 pm ET.)
- “This
Shell petrochemical plant in Beaver County, Pennsylvania — I did very
well here. We did very well. How many points did we win by? Does anybody
know? I’ll tell you. Isn’t it, I think, 28 points? That’s a lot.”
(Trump won Beaver County
by 19 points in 2016.)
- “I
got sued on a thing called ‘emoluments.’ Emoluments. You ever hear the
word? Nobody ever heard of it before. They went back. Now, nobody looks
at
Obama getting $60 million for a book.” (Obama signed his book deal
in 2017, after leaving office.)
Trump’s two and a half years in office definitely have changed the political and media world.
Shouldn’t they also change how we cover gaffes and misstatements?
2020 VISION: Don’t hate the player, hate the game
As the Democrats scramble to make that next debate stage, Steve Bullock blasted Tom Steyer on Tuesday for using his wealth to (almost) qualify for September.
“The DNC donor requirement may have been added with the right intentions, but there’s no doubt that it’s created a situation in which billionaires can buy their way onto the debate stage, and campaigns are forced to spend millions on digital ads chasing one dollar donors — not talking directly to voters,” Bullock said in a statement.
“Grassroots support and elections are about people talking to people, not billionaires being able to spend a whole lot of money to buy a Facebook ad,” Bullock added to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell.
“And that is what all the campaigns are starting to do instead of actually spending that money talking to folks.”

On the campaign trail today: Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro and John Delaney all stump in Iowa… Elizabeth Warren is in New Hampshire… And Amy Klobuchar hits Nevada.
Dispatches from NBC’s embeds: Elizabeth Warren addressed President Trump continuing to call her “Pocahontas” in a livestreamed Q&A yesterday.
NBC’s Benjamin Pu reports: “Warren also took a question from a Native American woman who said that ‘the issue of being called Pocahontas will be a prevalent concern’ for Native community and asked Warren for her plan on how to deal with being hit with that racial slur if she was the nominee. Warren said that ‘Goodness knows, like anyone who’s being honest, I’ve made mistakes, I have regrets, and I’ve apologized for them. But I try every day to be a good partner.’”
Julián Castro discussed the continuing protests and violence in Hong Kong while gaggling with reporters in Des Moines, Iowa.
NBC’s Maura Barrett reports: “Castro addressed the violence in Hong Kong, saying China needs to ‘move toward freedom of expression and true democratic representation, and individual liberty’ and the ‘U.S. has a role to play to make sure people can reach their full potential.’ Castro thinks this can be done through diplomatic efforts or sanctions.”

60 percent
That’s the share of Americans with an unfavorable opinion of China in a new Pew Research Center survey, a new record and a sharp increase from the 47 percent of Americans who said the same last year.
Among Republicans, the share with a negative view of China is 70 percent, a jump of nearly 20 points in the last year. Among Democrats, 59 percent say they have an unfavorable view.

08/14/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Judicial Crisis Network: Chris Cuomo; Harris and Banks; the Bottom Line By Carl M. Cannon on Aug 14, 2019 08:49 am Good morning, it’s Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019. Forty-four years ago today, Bruce Springsteen and the members of his E Street Band awoke knowing they had really put it all together this time. The night before they had played the first gig in a demanding five-night run — two shows per night — at a Greenwich Village nightclub called The Bottom Line. The band opened with “For You,” a hit from their first album, following it with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” a cut off their new record. In the middle of the set, they played two more songs from that new album, “Thunder Road” and album’s title track, “Born to Run.” I don’t think it’s too much to say that rock ‘n’ roll was never the same again. In a moment, I’ll offer an additional thought on Bruce Springsteen and the nightclub that gave him and his bandmates a historic boost. First, I’d steer you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Chris Cuomo and Self-Ownership. In a column, I consider the CNN anchor’s dust-up with a heckler, which may have proved his tormentor’s point. Harris’ Silence on Diverted Funds Rankles Housing Advocates. Susan Crabtree reports on the presidential candidate’s claims of standing up to big banks while California attorney general, which critics see differently. China Trade Policy Needs Rethinking. In RealClearPolicy, Brian McNicholl argues that the president’s stance on Huawei is too broad. Stock Markets Keep Voting Against Trump’s Protectionism. In RealClearMarkets, Allan Golombek cites evidence that the trade war with China is hurting the U.S. economy even more than had been generally predicted. A Patient-Centered Reform Solution. In RealClearHealth, David Wilson and David Hoppe laud several Georgia proposals. 3 Keys Books Shaped Our Understanding of Appeasement. In RealClearHistory, John P. Rossi spotlights works on the blunders of British diplomacy in the 1930s. * * * From the beginning, Bruce Springsteen’s music and his persona engendered passion among rock aficionados — and no small amount of hype. In the early 1970s, his record label proclaimed him the next Bob Dylan and in May of 1974, after seeing Springsteen open for Bonnie Raitt, young music writer Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock ‘n’ roll. But Springsteen’s first two albums, “Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.” and “The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle,” were only modest commercial successes, as they had trouble getting the radio airtime that record company executives knew was essential. Columbia Records had high hopes for “Born to Run,” and the label had partially papered the house at The Bottom Line with critics, celebs and influencers. It was a smart strategy, but it only worked because Bruce delivered the goods. “The raw power was unbelievable,” recalled Stanley Snadowsky, one of the club’s proprietors. “He climbed on the building’s poles, the piano, the tables. He was so exposed in such a reckless way, everyone felt it.” Two months later, Springsteen would appear simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek, a distinction normally reserved for U.S. presidents. Rolling Stone critic Dave Marsh marveled at how Springsteen had vaulted “visibly and rapidly from cult fanaticism to mass acceptance” as a result of his shows at The Bottom Line. That’s my cue to point out that genius or no, it takes a village to put on a successful rock concert, just like it does to put on a successful Broadway show (something Springsteen has also done). In this case, the midwives were not just his bandmates and the sound guys, and the gaffers and everyone else, it was also Stanley Snadowsky and Allan Pepper, the two friends and business partners who owned The Bottom Line. The fellow Brooklynites had known each other since the third grade. Sharing eclectic tastes in music, they bought a struggling jazz club called the Red Garter on West 4th Street between Mercer and Greene streets and renamed it The Bottom Line. The place had seating for 400 and a great location, and was a popular music spot for nearly three decades after its Feb. 12, 1974 opening. That night, Dr. John, Stevie Wonder, and Johnny Winter all played; Mick Jagger and Carly Simon took in the scene from their table. In the ensuing years, jazzmen such as Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie returned to grace the stage. Country star Dolly Parton played there. So did folk singers Joan Baez and Harry Chapin, sitar maestro Ravi Shankar, and Tito Puente — the “king of Latin music.” The Police, the Cars, Prince, Billy Joel, and Todd Rundgren performed at The Bottom Line. Lou Reed recorded a live album there. Eventually, all things come to an end, I suppose (although Springsteen is still going strong), and in 2004 the economics of a mid-sized music venue in a city with sky-high real estate prices overtook Snadowsky and Pepper. Bruce offered a hundred grand to pay the back rent they owed, but it was time to turn the page and they did. The last I heard, Allan Pepper was living in a New Jersey retirement home. Stanley Snadowsky, an attorney who had managed the band Kiss and done some legal work for the group, moved out West. He died six years ago in Las Vegas of complications from diabetes. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he went peacefully, surrounded by his family, as one of his favorite albums, Meat Loaf’s “Bat Out of Hell,” played on the stereo. Carl M. President says no deal on election security should go forward without voter ID Posted: 13 Aug 2019 06:22 PM PDT Election security has been a hot topic on both sides of the political aisle since the 2016 election as reports indicate Russia and other foreign players attempted to “hack” the election. Moreover, reports of domestic attempts to manipulate or otherwise affect the results of elections have been rising for decades. But the easiest way to […] The post President says no deal on election security should go forward without voter ID appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
SCOTUS to hear biggest gun rights cases since 2010 Posted: 13 Aug 2019 06:05 PM PDT While so much attention is being given to the White House and Capitol Hill regarding gun control and gun owners’ rights following back-to-back mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso, there are other decisions that will be made soon from the other branch of government. The Supreme Court is set to decide on cases involving […] The post SCOTUS to hear biggest gun rights cases since 2010 appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Google exposed: Insider delivers proof of manipulation to DOJ before coming out publicly Wednesday Posted: 13 Aug 2019 04:28 PM PDT Big tech is against conservatism, Republicans, and President Trump. Any argument from companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter that they’re not biased and actively using their platforms to prepare to sway the 2020 election is disingenuous. They do not want the “mistake” of 2016 to be repeated and they’re willing to go to great measures […] The post Google exposed: Insider delivers proof of manipulation to DOJ before coming out publicly Wednesday appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
CNN host Don Lemon being sued for sexual assault Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:43 PM PDT CNN host Don Lemon has been sued for sexual assault by a man claiming he was sexually assaulted in Murf’s Bar in July last year. This news follows controversy surrounding another CNN host when Chris Cuomo verbally assaulted someone for calling him “Fredo.” In the #MeToo era, accusations like these are supposed to be treated […] The post CNN host Don Lemon being sued for sexual assault appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Brad Parscale: Fredo Unhinged shirts ‘selling faster than Fredo’s meltdown’ Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:29 PM PDT The Chris “Fredo” Cuomo story may be a silly distraction for news outlets, but the Trump campaign is cashing in nicely on the CNN host’s meltdown. Shirts were put on sale following the incident yesterday and according to Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale, they’re selling like crazy. For $34. But apparently, it’s worth it. California counties sue over public benefit immigration rule Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:07 PM PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco and Santa Clara counties filed the first lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s new rules to deny green cards to migrants who use Medicaid, food stamps, housing vouchers or other forms of public assistance. The lawsuit, filed Tuesday, came after the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement Monday of its expanded “public charge” […] The post California counties sue over public benefit immigration rule appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Legacy media silent after gunman fires at ICE building in San Antonio Posted: 13 Aug 2019 03:01 PM PDT Protecting the narrative is a higher priority for legacy media outlets than actually reporting the news that matters to us. They love putting attention on Chris “Fredo” Cuomo or Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged suicide, but when real news happens, they ignore it if it doesn’t reaffirm their worldview. Case-in-point: Another attack on an ICE facility with […] The post Legacy media silent after gunman fires at ICE building in San Antonio appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Fredo, Epstein, and the distractions that keep us off track Posted: 13 Aug 2019 02:37 PM PDT Gun control is around the corner. Hong Kong is about to be a bloodbath. The border crisis is getting worse despite “good” news recently. Europe is about to start labeling anything made in Israel. Modern monetary theory grows as a “viable” option in the minds of radical progressives. North Korea continues firing missiles. Will gun control go the way of tariffs in a 1984-style GOP shift? Posted: 13 Aug 2019 01:48 PM PDT “Oceania was at war with Eastasia: Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia.” Ask a modern day Trump-supporting Republican if they support tariffs, particularly against China. The vast majority have sided with the President on this one. Some, such as me, have done so with the understanding that we’re in a trade war and […] The post Will gun control go the way of tariffs in a 1984-style GOP shift? appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Another false narrative bites the dust Posted: 13 Aug 2019 01:03 PM PDT Stabbings in Sydney and elsewhere show that societal violence is not an issue of guns. It hasn’t been ruled a terrorist act despite the words shouted during the attack.
