Good morning. We hope this email finds you exceedingly full, a little drowsy, and in the company of friends, family, and abundant leftovers.

Today’s Brew is a little different than usual. Instead of doing a recap of yesterday’s news, which admittedly we didn’t pay much attention to, we’re going to do a deep dive on the economic topic du jour: inflation. We’ll explore why inflation is actually bad, how we got into this mess, what the Fed can do, and more. Hope you enjoy it.

Reminder: We’ll be off Saturday and Sunday as well to spend quality time with the fam. But don’t worry, the Brew will be back in your inbox with regularly scheduled programming on Monday.

RECAP

The Inflation Situation: How We Got Here

Balloons holding up money Francis Scialabba

The funny thing about the current inflation scare is…it all happened so abruptly.

As the first Covid wave ripped through the US last spring, more than 20 million Americans lost their jobs and the country entered its worst recession in history. With GDP tumbling 31.4% in Q2 2020, the last thing worrying economists was surging prices. After all, for a brief moment, oil prices had just plummeted below $0.

But it turns out the worst recession in US history was also the shortest—by far. Thanks to government stimulus to the tune of nearly $6 trillion, many Americans were able to weather the storm and, flush with cash but restricted to their homes, went full Extreme Makeover.

Consider this: Consumer spending on goods was nearly 26% higher in August 2021 than in January 2019.

Demand is just one element of the price equation

And while demand for goods skyrocketed, supply was not ready to meet it. For a number of reasons—frequent Covid lockdowns in Asia, widespread labor shortages, poor planning—producers were unable to make and ship enough goods to satisfy the ravenous appetites of consumers.

So given this severe demand–supply imbalance, prices started to climb, slowly at first in late 2020 but then really picking up steam as the ball dropped on 2021. The consumer price index, which monitors the prices of a basket of consumer goods, grew 1.7% annually in February but by May had jumped 5%.

The higher inflation readings in spring 2021 were attributed to a few items that had an outsized impact on rising prices. You might remember all the fuss about used cars, which accounted for more than one-third of the monthly price increases in June. This weird dynamic lent ammo to the officials, Fed Chair Jerome Powell included, who argued that inflation was “transitory” and likely to subside once a few pandemic wrinkles had been ironed out.

But Team Transitory is on the back foot right now. This fall, inflation has spread from used cars and energy to items across the economy, from rents to food to apparel. At the same time, wages are surging, which is great for workers but also contributes to inflation, as companies must raise prices on their products to offset higher labor costs.

In October, consumer prices rose at their fastest pace in 31 years, and economists are still debating when inflation will peak.

So that’s how we got here.

ECONOMY

Why Is Inflation…Bad?

Why Is Inflation...Bad?

Not a dumb question at all. In fact, many economists have trouble explaining exactly why inflation is so harmful.

Let’s start here: Inflation is good, when it grows slowly. The Fed targets a 2% rate of inflation over the long run, allowing for a few temporary blips.

Moderate inflation is a sign of a healthy economy. When consumers expect prices to increase in the future, they want to buy goods now. Producers take this demand as a sign that they should make more goods, hire more labor, make more investments, etc., which generates a “virtuous” cycle of growth.

  • And while inflation does mean higher prices for consumers, it also leads to higher salaries, blunting its effects on your wallet.
  • Last quarter, wages jumped the most in 20 years of record-keeping.

Okay, so when is inflation bad?

When higher prices outstrip wage growth, that’s bad, obviously, because your standard of living falls. Inflation is especially harmful to folks whose income is more fixed—like many seniors.

Inflation, when left unchecked, can also escalate quickly. As we mentioned before, inflation messes with the human brain. As workers grow concerned about rising prices, they push for higher wages, which in turn raises costs for businesses, which forces them to hike prices, and…lather, rinse, repeat. This is called the “wage–price spiral,” and it led to consumer prices rising more than 14% annually in 1980.

Finally, higher inflation is bad because it typically doesn’t end well. In a bid to stop the spiraling inflation of the 1970s, then-Fed Chair Paul Volcker cranked up interest rates to slow down the economy, a necessary action that inevitably resulted in a punishing recession.

As we’ll discuss a little later, current Fed leaders have a tough task ahead of them in trying to rein in inflation without hitting the brakes on economic growth.

HISTORY

US Inflation Since WWII

Chart of inflation in modern US history The White House

This chart from the White House shows the six major inflationary episodes following World War II, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI) and personal consumption expenditures (PCE), which is the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge. Let’s briefly explore each episode.

1946–1948: In the years following WWII, inflation jumped more than 20% due to the scrapping of wartime price controls, surging consumer demand, and supply shortages.

1950–1951: The Korean War spurred a rush for goods, while some production pivoted back to military material.

1969–1971: GDP growth averaged a whopping 4.8% during this period of economic expansion, which also resulted in higher inflation.

1973–1982: Two shocks to energy markets (an OPEC oil embargo and conflicts in the Middle East) led to the longest stretch of inflation in US history.

1989–1991: Another war in the Middle East, the Gulf War, caused gas prices to spike.

2008: Oil prices jumped to $140/barrel in July 2008, double what they had been a year earlier.

What can we learn? While each inflationary period has its own unique characteristics, White House economists argue that our current situation most closely parallels the post-WWII bump in prices, which resulted from pent-up consumer demand and supply chain disruptions, and not 1970s-style inflation, which stemmed from extraordinary shocks to energy markets.

FED

What Should the Fed Do?

A shoulders-up photo of Fed Chair Jerome Powell looking off into the distanceSarah Silbiger/Getty Images

With inflation at its highest level since 1990, pressure is mounting on the central bank to channel Mr. Freeze and cool down prices.

What would that look like? Winding down its pandemic-era stimulus measures more aggressively. The central bank has already started to taper the $120 billion/month in bond purchases it began last summer, but some economists, such as Harvard’s Jason Furman, think the Fed should speed up the wind-down in a bid to stop price growth in its tracks.

  • Some Fed officials agree. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard said recently, “It makes sense to try to move a little bit more hawkishly here and try to manage the inflation risk.”

But it’s not that simple. Remember, the Fed changed its policy framework in 2020 that allows it to overshoot its 2% inflation target in the short term to achieve “maximum employment,” the idea that anyone who is willing and able to work has the opportunity to get a job.

And while the unemployment rate has dropped more quickly than expected (it’s down to 4.6% from a 14.7% peak in May 2020), the economy remains 5 million jobs short of its pre-pandemic levels.

So the Fed is in a really tricky position. It knows people are anxious about inflation, but also that the labor market is not fully healed. Reducing its bond purchases more aggressively, then immediately hiking interest rates afterward, could slow the economy before it’s totally recovered.

Plus, there are signs that the supply chain crunch is beginning to ease, which would help cool prices on its own.

Looking ahead…the Fed meets in December for the final time in 2021. The big thing to watch for is whether Powell decides to reduce those bond purchases more quickly in order to quell inflation fears.

Why is Dollar Tree raising the price of most of its products to $1.25?

Dollar Tree raises prices to $1.25, and it says it’s not because of inflation.
MarketWatch (Center) • Factual Grade 79% • 4 min read

The company notes that it has managed to hold prices at $1 for 35 years, including during inflationary periods. This decision comes after a testing process that began this past summer, and was introduced in September as part of a company transformation plan. The company said the higher price point is a permanent move, and not the result of “short-term or transitory market conditions.”

The benefit of higher prices is expected to be offset by higher costs as well as store conversions, with the company expanding its Dollar Tree Plus locations, adding combo stores that house both Dollar Tree and Family Dollar merchandise, and more. Supply-chain disruptions are expected to be a challenge in the near term.

Moreover, the $1.25 price point allows the company to offer a wider range of merchandise, including items that had been discontinued at the $1 level. Gross margins will also benefit, with the higher price point offsetting freight, operating and other costs that have gone up.

Tensions emerge over redefining the fully vaccinated

A debate is emerging around what it means to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, as some state and local officials push to change the definition to include an additional dose of a coronavirus vaccine.

Governors in two states in the past week indicated they think three shots are necessary for full vaccination, but public health experts warn such a move would result in massive confusion, and a return to the piecemeal, scattered response that marked the early days of the pandemic.

In contrast, politicians on both the left and the right are reluctant to embrace this approach, due to a perception that carbon taxes are highly unpopular. Instead, politicians often implement something less effective: clean energy subsidies.

Black Friday sales kick off the holiday shopping season

The second Black Friday of the pandemic is officially underway. After weeks of early sales, Friday marks the official shopping holiday that Americans expect to bring great deals. Stores opened early – Walmart, Best Buy, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, JCPenney and Kohl’s – were first at 5 a.m. Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy’s, Home Depot and Lowe’s opened an hour later. Target, GameStop and HomeGoods were among the retailers opening at 7 a.m. Hours can vary by location. Some stores will continue sales throughout the weekend ahead of Cyber Monday. Shoppers are expected to pay on average between 5% to 17% more for toys, clothing, appliances, TVs and others purchases on Black Friday this year compared with last year, according to Aurelien Duthoit of Allianz Research. How did Black Friday begin? The day has a rich, but decidedly mixed, history, USA TODAY writer Michelle Shen explains.

Actions to be taken after South African scientists detect new COVID variant

A new coronavirus variant has been detected in South Africa that scientists say is a concern because of its high number of mutations and rapid spread among young people in Gauteng, the country’s most populous province, Health Minister Joe Phaahla announced Thursday. Currently identified as B.1.1.529, the new variant has also been found in Botswana and Hong Kong in travelers from South Africa, Phaahla added. The World Health Organization’s technical working group is to meet Friday to assess the new variant and may decide whether or not to give it a name from the Greek alphabet. A number of European and Asian nations were moving to stop air travel from southern Africa on Friday.

Wanda Cooper-Jones, Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, woke up Thursday with a new, very important blessing on Thanksgiving Day.
But there will still be an empty chair at the family’s celebrations. It is a reminder that while she feels justice was served when three white men were convicted Wednesday for cornering and killing her son in Georgia in 2020, she will never be made whole again because her son is gone.

Bidens expected to attend tree lighting ceremony on Nantucket

President Joe Biden on Thursday wished Americans a happy Thanksgiving, the second celebrated in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic, in remarks welcoming the resumption of holiday traditions by millions of U.S. families — including his own in Nantucket, Massachusetts . The president and first lady Jill Biden visited the Coast Guard station at Brant Point to meet with personnel there and virtually with U.S. service members around the world. The Bidens also called in to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, briefly bantering on air with NBC’s Al Roker. The first lady was heard telling the Coast Guard members she would see them again Friday night at Nantucket’s annual Christmas tree lighting, another Biden tradition.

Thanksgiving Day NFL action: Bears, Raiders and Bills all win on the road

🏈 Buffalo bounces back: Against an injury-depleted New Orleans Saints team, the Bills handled their business on both sides of the ball and took home a 31-6 victory.
🏈 Las Vegas wins a penalty-filled game: A defensive pass interference call against the Dallas Cowboys in overtime allowed the Las Vegas Raiders to advance close enough to kick a game-winning field goal that lifted the Raiders to a 36-33 win. A whopping 28 flags for 276 penalty yards were called during the game.
🏈 “I mean, we’re playing football at the end of the day”: Most Cowboys steered clear of attributing the loss to officiating. After all, the Raiders drew the same number of penalties (14) as the Cowboys. But the volume of officiating activity was undeniable and star rookie linebacker Micah Parsons was OK airing his thoughts about what unfolded.

🏈 Detroit remains winless: The Detroit Lions were penalized for calling two consecutive timeouts late in the fourth quarter, which helped the Chicago Bears convert on a key third down and, subsequently, convert the game-winning 28-yard field goal as time expired Thursday. The Bears’ 16-14 win sent the Lions to an 0-10-1 record.
🏈 Column from Detroit: Forget another Lions loss. Coach Dan Campbell is losing benefit of the doubt.

Eyeing that leftover turkey and other fixings? Here’s how long it’s good for.

The holidays are known for quality time with family, traditional recipes and the not so fun food poisoning outbreaks if you don’t refrigerate your leftovers quickly . And once the leftovers are put away in the refrigerator, you have only a few days to eat them before they become a safety risk. If stored in a refrigerator, leftovers can stay good for three to four days. If they’re stored in a freezer, it’s three to four months. It’s best to label the food with an expiration date when you put it away, to help you keep track of when it’s no longer safe to eat, food scientist Lisa Yakas recommends.

Golf rivals DeChambeau, Koepka to face off in the latest edition of ‘The Match’

The fifth edition of “Capital One’s The Match” will feature rivals Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau facing off in a head-to-head, 12-hole match at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas on Friday (4 p.m. ET, TNT and TBS). One key question going into the event is: Do they or don’t they despise each other? The two golfers have taken potshots at each other for months. The bad feelings melted away between the two, we are told, during the Ryder Cup, when the golfers actually offered to play together for the good of the United States team. The two even shared a short hug after the U.S. defeated Europe. But the pair seem to have resumed their trolling of each other in recent weeks.

Robert Deutsch, USA TODAY
The 95th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was back on form Thursday after bowing to pandemic restrictions last year. The epic event featured 15 giant character balloons, 28 floats, 36 novelty and heritage inflatables, 10 marching bands, nine performance groups, Santa Claus and yes, more than 800 clowns.
Check out our gallery of all the fun and festivities.

99.) MARK LEVIN

November 25, 2021

November 25, 2021

On Thursday’s Mark Levin Show, we bring you the best Of Mark Levin.   The media is thoroughly and grotesquely racist, antisemitic, and Marxist. Darryl Edward Brooks Jr has been charged with the slaughter of 6 and the injuries of 40 children and adults he allegedly ran over at a Christmas parade. Brooks is a career criminal with a listing on Arizona’s sex offender registry and his motivation remains to be seen.  Then, these problems are perpetuated by the rejection of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King’s idea of a color-blind society from the Marxists that promote critical race theory and MSNBC hosts smear and trash White people and this country’s founding.  Later, self-defense predates the U.S Constitution and Kyle Rittenhouse was rightfully found not guilty. A non-violent protester was killed in the riot on January 6th and the left within the media called that an insurrection. Yet, Democrats will defend the violent rioters instead of the law-abiding citizen. The radicals on the left don’t believe in a jury system as was proved by the prosecutors in this case who were willing to undermine the Constitution to get a scalp for their cause. Finally, MSNBC’s Tiffany’s Cross attacks truck drivers claiming that the white drivers cut off the black drivers. Cross’s suggestion that truckers are racists does not sit well with truckers of all races and genders across America. Later, Buzzfeed maintains that because the FBI opened an investigation into the Steele dossier they felt it was worth reporting on it. Despite learning that the entire dossier was false almost none of the media have retracted their stories.
