MORNING NEWS BRIEFING – NOVEMBER 25, 2021

Good morning! Here is your news briefing for Thursday November 25, 2021

1.) THE DAILY SIGNAL

November 25 2021

Happy Thanksgiving from Washington, where we hope you’re able to gather in thanks with loved ones wherever you are. We’ve got a reflection from Lee Edwards on Thanksgiving during a difficult year and John Stossel on the lessons of the pilgrims. Plus: Mary Margaret Olohan talks to Sen. Rand Paul about the COVID-19 vaccine for kids, and Rob Bluey reports on Virginia Lt. Gov.-elect Winsome Sears’ views on COVID-19 immunity. On this date in 1950, the “storm of the century” strikes the Eastern U.S. at Thanksgiving, dumping sometimes impassable snow on multiple states, killing hundreds, and wreaking millions of dollars in damages. Let’s count our blessings today and this weekend. Morning Bell will return Saturday.

By Lee Edwards
Proclaiming a national day of Thanksgiving, George Washington acknowledged God as the source of all “the great and various favors which he has pleased to confer upon us.”

By Mary Margaret Olohan
“I don’t think that we have completely explored the safety for children,” says Paul. “No. 1, we don’t know—whether or not your child has already had COVID—whether the vaccine is safe.”
COMMENTARY
No Private Property Almost Killed Off the Pilgrims
By John Stossel
No individual pilgrim owned crops they grew, so no one had an incentive to work harder to produce extra to sell. Since even slackers got food from the communal supply, they had no reason to work hard.

Brian McMichael, 65, and his son Travis, 35, both white, each faced nine charges, which include “one count of malice murder, four counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of false imprisonment and one count of criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment.”

The case centers on an incident from May 2020, when the McMichaels [along with neighbor William Bryan] grabbed guns and followed Arbery throughout their neighborhood in Georgia allegedly under the assumption that Arbery was the perpetrator of several break-ins within the area. Defense attorney Laura Hogue argued that Arbery escalated the conflict.

Prosecutor Linda Dunikoski said that the three men had established an atmosphere for violence, nullifying their right to self-defense. Critics of the trial have said that the defense attorneys engaged in a number of racist tropes, which may have impacted the jury’s decision.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No – This is a very temporary fix that likely will not have time to really impact prices at the pump, and leaves us with less oil on hand in case of an emergency. It’s also all well and good to say we’re shifting to renewables, but that’s going to take decades to accomplish. In the interim, we should support domestic production and incentivize our refineries to switch to the light sweet crude that American oil and gas companies produce. Right now, they’re dependent on foreign sources of oil that want to price gouge America.

Most expensive Thanksgiving ever? It’s not all inflation
BY TREY MALONE
OPINION | By now, we’ve all seen the headlines predicting that this week’s Thanksgiving will be the most expensive on record. While it is technically true, food inflation also makes this statement true most years. Adjusting for inflation, the price of Thanksgiving staples has declined substantially over the past few decades. This decline in the “real” price can likely be attributed to gains from trade and improvements in agricultural production technology. That said, just because inflation occurs regularly does not mean that this Thanksgiving’s price increases are trivial.

America must prepare for war with China over Taiwan

OPINION | China’s massive investment in the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) may show China is preparing to fundamentally change the status quo and preparing for possible war with the United States over Taiwan. To deter China, the United States must rapidly build up its forces in the Pacific, continue to strengthen military alliances in the region to ensure access to bases in time of conflict, and accelerate deliveries of purchased military equipment to Taiwan.

26.) AMERICAN MINUTE

Thanksgiving Proclamations by Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln, Roosevelt, & more – American Minute with Bill Federer

& more – American Minute with Bill Federer  Jefferson  Lincoln  Madison  Roosevelt  Thanksgiving Proclamations: Washington

During the days of America’s founding, colonies would declare:
  • days of prayer when times were bad;
  • days of fasting when times were real bad; and
  • days of thanksgiving when things turned around.

This developed into many colonies, like New Hampshire and Massachusetts, having annual days of fasting, often on Good Friday.

This is evidence that colonists were not “deists” who believed God set the laws of nature in place and then let everything run on its own.

America’s founders believed in a living relationship with God where:
  • if people sinned, He would call them to repent;
  • if they did not repent, He sent judgment; and
  • then when they repented and believed, He would send deliverance, health, and blessings.

This was expressed in Deuteronomy 28:
“If thou shalt HEARKEN diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments .. all these BLESSINGS shall come on thee, and overtake thee …
But … if thou wilt NOT HEARKEN unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments … all these CURSES shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.”

In 2 Chronicles 7:14, the Lord promised:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

During a threaten war, Ben Franklin published a proclamation of a General Fast in the Pennsylvania Gazette, December 12, 1747:
“The calamities of a bloody war … seem every year more nearly to approach us … and there is just reason to fear that unless we humble ourselves before the Lord and amend our ways, we may be chastised with yet heavier judgments.

We have … thought fit … to appoint … a Day of Fasting … to join with one accord in the most humble & fervent supplications that Almighty God would mercifully interpose and still the rage of war among the nations & put a stop to the effusion of Christian blood.”

Thomas Jefferson drafted a Day of Fasting for Virginia in 1774 to be observed on the day British ships blockaded Boston’s harbor.
“With apprehension … from the hostile invasion of the city of Boston … whose commerce and harbor are … to be stopped by an armed force, deem it highly necessary that the said first day of June be set apart, by the members of this House, as a Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, devoutly to implore the Divine interposition.”

After the Declaration of Independence was proclaimed July 4, 1776, the first “National” Day of Thanksgiving was declared by the Continental Congress on November 1, 1777, to celebrate victory over British General Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga:

“The grateful feeling of their hearts … join the penitent confession of their manifold sins …
that it may please God, through the merits of Jesus Christ, mercifully to forgive and blot them out of remembrance …
and … under the providence of Almighty God … secure for these United States the greatest of all human blessings, independence and peace.”

After John Paul Jones, commanding the Bonhomme Richard, captured the British ship HMS Serapis on September 23, 1779, the Continental Congress declared a Day of Thanksgiving, recommending that the states do likewise.

In accordance with this, Virginia Governor Thomas Jefferson proclaimed for Virginia, November 11, 1779:
“Congress … hath thought proper … to recommend to the several States … a day of public and solemn Thanksgiving to Almighty God, for his mercies, and of Prayer, for the continuance of his favour … That He would go forth with our hosts and crown our arms with victory;

… That He would grant to His church, the plentiful effusions of Divine Grace, and pour out His Holy Spirit on all Ministers of the Gospel;
That He would bless and prosper the means of education, and spread the light of Christian knowledge through the remotest corners of the earth …
I do therefore … issue this proclamation … appointing … a day of public and solemn Thanksgiving and Prayer to Almighty God …
Given under by hand … this 11th day of November, in the year of our Lord, 1779 … Thomas Jefferson.”

After traitor Benedict Arnold’s plot to betray West Point was thwarted, the Continental Congress proclaimed a Day of Thanksgiving, October 18, 1780:

“In the late remarkable interposition of His watchful providence,
in the rescuing the person of our Commander-in-Chief and the army from imminent dangers, at the moment when treason was ripened for execution …

… it is therefore recommended … a Day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer … to confess our unworthiness … and to offer fervent supplications to the God of all grace … to cause the knowledge of Christianity to spread over all the earth.”

After British General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Congress proclaimed a Day of Thanksgiving, October 11, 1782:
“It being the indispensable duty of all nations … to offer up their supplications to Almighty God …
the United States in Congress assembled … do hereby recommend it to the inhabitants of these states in general, to observe … the last Thursday … of November next, as a Day of Solemn Thanksgiving to God for all his mercies.”

After the Treaty of Paris ended the Revolutionary War, Congress recommended that the States declare a Day of Thanksgiving.

Massachusetts Governor John Hancock, who was a former President of the Continental Congress, proclaimed a Day of Thanksgiving, November 8, 1783:
“The Citizens of these United States have every Reason for Praise and Gratitude to the God of their salvation …
I do … appoint … the 11th day of December next (the day recommended by the Congress to all the States) to be religiously observed as a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer,
that all the people may then assemble to celebrate … that he hath been pleased to continue to us the Light of the Blessed Gospel …
That we also offer up fervent supplications … to cause pure Religion and Virtue to flourish … and to fill the world with His glory.”

After passing the Bill of Rights, which included the First Amendment, Congress requested President George Washington issue a National Day of Thanksgiving, which he did, October 3, 1789:
“Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor–
and Whereas both Houses of Congress have by their joint Committee requested me
‘to recommend to the People of the United States a Day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness;’

… Now, therefore, I do recommend … Thursday, the 26TH DAY of NOVEMBER …
to be devoted by the People of these United States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be …
That we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble Thanks … for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government …
particularly the national one now lately instituted, for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed … to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue.”

A Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania almost caused the new American Republic to fall into chaos.

When is was peacefully resolved, President George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving, September 25, 1794:
“Resolved, in perfect reliance on that gracious Providence which so signally displays its goodness towards this country to reduce the refractory to a due subordination to the law …
To call to mind that, as the people of the United States have been permitted, under Divine favor, in perfect freedom, after solemn deliberation, and in an enlightened age, to elect their own government,
so will their gratitude for this inestimable blessing be best distinguished by firm exertions to maintain the Constitution and the laws.”

On January 1, 1795, President George Washington proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving:
“When we review the calamities, which afflict so many other nations … the great degree of internal tranquility we have enjoyed –
the recent confirmation of that tranquility by the suppression of an insurrection which so wantonly threatened it – the happy course of public affairs in general –
the unexampled prosperity of all classes of our citizens; are circumstances which peculiarly mark our situation with indications of the Divine beneficence towards us.
In such a state of things it is, in an especial manner, our duty as people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God and to implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experience …

… I, George Washington, President of the United States, do recommend to all religious societies and denominations, and to all persons whomsoever, within the United States,
to set apart … a Day of public Thanksgiving and Prayer: and on that day to meet together and render their sincere and hearty thanks to the great Ruler of Nations.”

After the War of 1812 was ended with the Treaty of Ghent, President James Madison proclaimed a National Day of Thanksgiving, March 4, 1815:
“The Senate and House of Representatives … signified their desire that a day may … be observed by the people of the United States with religious solemnity as a Day of Thanksgiving and of devout acknowledgments to Almighty God for His great goodness manifested in restoring to them the blessing of peace.
No people ought to feel greater obligations to celebrate the goodness of the Great Disposer of Events and of the Destiny of Nations than the people of the United States.

… His kind Providence originally conducted them to one of the best portions of the dwelling place allotted for the great family of the human race.
He protected … them under all the difficulties and trials to which they were exposed in their early days …
In the arduous struggle … they were distinguished by multiplied tokens of His benign interposition …
He … enabled them to assert their national rights and to enhance their national character in another arduous conflict, which is now so happily terminated by a peace and reconciliation with those who have been our enemies.
And to the same Divine Author of Every Good and Perfect Gift we are indebted for all those privileges and advantages, religious as well as civil, which are so richly enjoyed in this favored land …

… I now recommend … a Day on which the people of every religious denomination may in their solemn assemblies unite their hearts and their voices in a freewill offering to their Heavenly Benefactor of their homage of Thanksgiving and of their songs of praise.
Given … in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen … James Madison.”

Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the first “Annual” National Day of Thanksgiving, Washington, D.C., October 3, 1863:
“In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity …
I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.

… And I recommend … they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged,
and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the United States the Eighty-eighth.
By the President: Abraham Lincoln, William H. Seward, Secretary of State.”

America was spared a global cholera pandemic, as referenced in President Grover Cleveland’s National Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer Proclamation, November 1, 1888:
“On that day let all our people suspend their ordinary work and occupations, and in their accustomed places of worship, with prayer and songs of praise, render thanks to God for all His mercies …
And mindful of the afflictive dispensations with which a portion of our land has been visited, let us, while we humble ourselves before the power of God, acknowledge His mercy in setting bounds to the deadly march of pestilence, and let our hearts be chastened by sympathy with our fellow-countrymen who have suffered and who mourn.
And as we return thanks for all the blessings which we have received from the hand of our Heavenly Father, let us not forget that He has enjoined upon us charity;
and on this day of thanksgiving let us generously remember the poor and needy, so that our tribute of praise and gratitude may be acceptable in the sight of the Lord.”

On the 100th anniversary of Washington’s Inauguration, President Benjamin Harrison issued a National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving, April 4, 1889:
“George Washington took the oath of office as Chief Magistrate of the new-born Republic.
This impressive act was preceded at 9 o’clock in the morning in all the churches of the city by prayer for God’s blessing on the Government and its first President …
In order that the joy of the occasion may be associated with a deep thankfulness in the minds of the people for all our blessings in the past and a devout supplication to God for their gracious continuance in the future,
the representatives of the religious creeds, both Christian and Hebrew, have memorialized the Government to designate an hour for prayer and thanksgiving on that day.”

In his National Day of Thanksgiving Proclamation, October 29, 1900, President William McKinley acknowledged the charitable help given to the city of Galveston after a hurricane:
“The works of religion and charity have everywhere been manifest …
We have been generally exempt from pestilence and other great calamities; and even the tragic visitation which overwhelmed the city of Galveston made evident the sentiments of sympathy and Christian charity by virtue of which we are one united people.
Now, therefore, I, William McKinley, President of the United States, do hereby appoint and set apart Thursday, the 29th of November next, to be observed by all the people of the United States, at home or abroad, as a day of thanksgiving and praise to Him who holds the nations in the hollow of His hand …
and that they humbly pray for the continuance of His Divine favor, for concord and amity with other nations, and for righteousness and peace in all our ways.”

President Theodore Roosevelt acknowledged how rare America is in his National Day of Praise and Thanksgiving Proclamation, October 24, 1903:
“During the last year the Lord has dealt bountifully with us …
It behooves us not only to rejoice greatly because of what has been given us, but to accept it with a solemn sense of responsibility, realizing that under Heaven it rests with us ourselves to show that we are worthy to use aright what has thus been entrusted to our care.

… In no other place and at no other time has the experiment of government of the people, by the people, for the people, been tried on so vast a scale as here in our own country in the opening years of the 20th Century.
Failure would not only be a dreadful thing for us, but a dreadful thing for all mankind, because it would mean loss of hope for all who believe in the power and the righteousness of liberty.
Therefore, in thanking God for the mercies extended to us in the past, we beseech Him that He may not withhold them in the future.”

President Franklin Roosevelt had proclaimed the first National Bible Week in 1941. Since then, every session of Congress has designated Thanksgiving week as National Bible Week.
Rep. Mike Johnson stated in a Special session of the U.S. House (CSPAN):
“Recognizing the 77th annual National Bible Week in America … This is a declaration first made by President Franklin D. Roosevelt just weeks before the start of World War II.”

Through the decades, Presidents declared National Days of Thanksgiving, many of which are contained in the book Prayers and Presidents – Inspiring Faith from Leaders of the Past.

Continuing this tradition, President Donald J. Trump wrote in his Thanksgiving Proclamation, November 23, 2017:
“On Thanksgiving Day, as we have for nearly four centuries, Americans give thanks to Almighty God for our abundant blessings.
We gather with the people we love to show gratitude for our freedom, for our friends and families, and for the prosperous Nation we call home.

… In July 1620, more than 100 Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower, fleeing religious persecution and seeking freedom and opportunity in a new and unfamiliar place.
These dauntless souls arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in the freezing cold of December 1620.
They were greeted by sickness and severe weather, and quickly lost 46 of their fellow travelers.

… Those who endured the incredible hardship of their first year in America, however, had many reasons for gratitude.
They had survived. They were free. And, with the help of the Wampanoag tribe, and a bountiful harvest, they were regaining their health and strength.

… In thanks to God for these blessings, the new governor of the Plymouth Colony, William Bradford, proclaimed a day of thanksgiving and gathered with the Wampanoag tribe for three days of celebration.
For the next two centuries, many individual colonies and states, primarily in the Northeast, carried on the tradition of fall Thanksgiving festivities …
We can see, in the courageous Pilgrims who stood on Plymouth Rock in new land, the intrepidness that lies at the core of our American spirit.
Just as the Pilgrims did, today Americans stand strong, willing to fight for their families and their futures, to uphold our values, and to confront any challenge …

… As one people, we seek God’s protection, guidance, and wisdom, as we stand humbled by the abundance of our great Nation and the blessings of freedom, family, and faith.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Thursday, November 23, 2017, as a National Day of Thanksgiving.
I encourage all Americans to gather, in homes and places of worship, to offer a prayer of thanks to God for our many blessings.”

France and Britain sought answers on how to deter migrants from trying to cross the sea separating them after 27 people died making the attempt in an inflatable dinghy, the worst accident of its kind in the Channel on record. With relations fraught by years of tension over Brexit and immigration, much of the focus was on who should bear responsibility.

At least 11 miners died in an accident at a coal mine in Russia’s Siberia and an operation to rescue dozens more people underground was suspended due to the risk of an explosion.

Germany crossed the sombre threshold of 100,000 COVID-19-related deaths with a surge in new infections posing a challenge for the new government.

Sweden’s first female prime minister, Social Democrat Magdalena Andersson, resigned after less than 12 hours in the top job after the Green Party quit their two-party coalition, stoking political uncertainty.

Ethiopian Olympic gold medallist and national hero Haile Gebrselassie pledged to join the fight against rebellious forces in his country, after the prime minister said he had gone to direct the war from the front lines.

Americans will pack football stadiums, flock to parades and gather more freely for family feasts, grateful to celebrate Thanksgiving Day traditions again after the pandemic kept many at home last year. An estimated 53.4 million people will travel, up 13% from 2020, according to the American Automobile Association. Air travel is expected to recover to about 91% of pre-pandemic levels.

Three white men were convicted of murder for chasing and shooting Ahmaud Arbery as the Black man ran through their neighborhood, with a Georgia jury rejecting a self-defense claim in a trial that once again probed America’s divisive issues of race and guns. Joy and relief energized the crowd outside the courthouse.

A polyp removed during President Joe Biden’s colonoscopy last week “is a benign, slow-growing, but thought to be precancerous lesion” for which no more action is required at this time, the White House physician said.

Biden named his choices to run the White House budget office, tapping two women of color to lead the massive government operations agency.

The Manhattan district attorney is not planning to charge Trump Organization Chief Operating Officer Matthew Calamari in a fraud case in which the former U.S. president’s firm and its chief financial officer have been charged, Calamari’s lawyer said.

BUSINESS

Investors are zeroing in on a number of hot retailers’ shares as the U.S. holiday shopping season kicks into high gear this week, weighing the potential for supply chain problems against expected strong consumer demand.

A growing number of Federal Reserve policymakers indicated they would be open to speeding up the elimination of their bond-buying program if high inflation held and move more quickly to raise interest rates, minutes of the U.S. central bank’s last policy meeting showed.

China, the world’s largest crude importer, was non-committal about whether it will release oil from its reserves as requested by Washington, while OPEC sources said the U.S. action has not made the producer group change course.

High-tech home appliance maker Dyson told Reuters it had cut ties with supplier ATA IMS following an audit of the Malaysian company’s labor practices and allegations by a whistleblower, sending ATA shares plunging.

South Korea’s mobile and online game producers are luring players with services using non-fungible tokens, jumping on a trend the firms see as the future of the sector and sparking a sharp rally in their shares in recent weeks. In the gaming world, the various characters, weapons, vehicles and other items that players make use of to accomplish their particular tasks can be NFTs.

America’s first socialist republic

Posted: 25 Nov 2021 03:14 AM PST

(Scott Johnson)Paul A. Rahe holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in the Western Heritage at Hillsdale College and is one of the country’s most distinguished scholars of history and politics. In view of his study of Republics Ancient and Modern, Professor Rahe is the academy’s foremost authority on the history of republics. Although his subsequent work on Soft Despotism was not far from his Thanksgiving reflections when he wrote this column for us in 2009, at the dawn of the Obama era, neither was his older work on republics. Posted here annually on Thanksgiving since 2009, it bears directly on the socialist temptation that confronts us yet:

On Thanksgiving, it is customary that Americans recall to mind the experience of the Pilgrim Fathers. We have much to learn from the history of the Plymouth Plantation. For, in their first year in the New World, the Pilgrims conducted an experiment in social engineering akin to what is now contemplated; and, after an abortive attempt at cultivating the land in common, their leaders reflected on the results in a manner that Americans today should find instructive.

William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony, reports that, at that time, he and his advisers considered “how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop than they had done, that they might not still thus languish in misery.” And “after much debate of things,” he then adds, they chose to abandon communal property, deciding that “they should set corn every man for his own particular” and assign “to every family a parcel of land, according to the proportion of their number, for that end.”

The results, he tells us, were gratifying in the extreme, “for it made all hands very industrious” and “much more corn was planted than otherwise would have been.” Even “the women now went willingly into the field, and took their little ones with them to set corn; which before would allege weakness and inability; whom to have compelled would have been thought great tyranny and oppression.”

Moreover, he observes, “the experience that was had in this common course and condition, tried sundry years . . . amongst godly and sober men, may well evince the vanity of that conceit of Plato’s and other ancients applauded by some of later times . . . that the taking away of property and bringing in community into a commonwealth would make them happy and flourishing.” In practice, America’s first socialist experiment “was found to breed much confusion and discontent and retard much employment that would have been to their benefit and comfort.”

In practice, “the young men, that were most able and fit for labor and service, did repine that they should spend their time and strength to work for other men’s wives and children without any recompense. The strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes than he that was weak and not able to do a quarter the other could; this was thought injustice. The aged and graver men to be ranked and equalized in labors and victuals, clothes etc., with the meaner and younger sort, thought it some indignity and disrespect unto them. And for men’s wives to be commanded to do service for other men, as dressing their meat, washing their clothes, etc., they deemed it a kind of slavery, neither could many husbands well brook it.”

Naturally enough, quarrels ensued. “If it did not cut off those relations that God hath set amongst men,” Bradford notes, “yet it did at least much diminish and take off the mutual respects that should be preserved amongst them. And [it] would have been worse if they had been men of another condition” less given to the fear of God. “Let none object,” he concludes, that “this is men’s corruption, and nothing to the course itself. I answer, seeing all men have this corruption in them, God in His wisdom saw another course fitter for them.”

The moral is perfectly clear. Self-interest cannot be expunged. Where there is private property and its possession and acquisition are protected and treated with respect, self-interest and jealousy can be deployed against laziness and the desire for that which is not one’s own, and there tends to be plenty as a consequence.

But where one takes from those who join talent with industry to provide for those lacking either or both, where the fruits of one man’s labor are appropriated to benefit another who is less productive, self-interest reinforces laziness, jealousy engenders covetousness, and these combine in a bitter stew to produce both conflict and dearth.

Trump’s litmus test

Posted: 24 Nov 2021 06:58 PM PST

(Paul Mirengoff)Yesterday, I observed that Sen. Mark Kelly is “underwater” in Arizona. Polls show that more Arizonans disapprove of his performance in the Senate than approve of it. And Kelly is up for reelection (or defeat) in less than a year.

In passing, I noted that early polling among Republicans puts Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich well out in front of other GOP Senate hopefuls in the state. He is the first choice of 27 percent of respondents. The next most popular candidate is at only 10 percent. Brnovich also polls slightly better than his rivals in early head-to-head polling against Kelly.

However, there’s a fly in ointment. Donald Trump is pressing Brnovich, as Attorney General, to back the claim that Trump carried Arizona in 2020:

Former President Donald Trump renewed his pressure campaign on Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, asking in a statement Tuesday what happened to the “Rigged and Stolen Arizona Presidential Election that is being investigated.”

In his statement, Trump baselessly claims 35,000 fictitious votes in Pima County and calls on the state Legislature to decertify the 2020 election results.

The statement, issued through his Save America political action committee, didn’t attack Brnovich. But it makes clear that the investigation opened by Brnovich’s office hasn’t satisfied Trump, a man whose influence in Republican circles still could impact politics here.

Brnovich is seeking the GOP nomination in next year’s U.S. Senate race. Trump’s endorsement in that crowded primary could help determine who gets to challenge Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz.

I understand why, for Trump, embracing unsubstantiated claims that the election was stolen from him is close to a litmus test. The myth of invincibility (Trump will win so much we’ll get tired of all the winning) is central both to Trump’s psyche and to his appeal. Reality — that Trump led the party to defeat in 2018 and again in 2020 — is unacceptable.

I don’t quite understand why large numbers registered Republicans may demand that GOP candidates play along with Trump on this matter. Why not thank the former president for his service and try to find a candidate more likely to win going forward? Alternatively, if one thinks Trump is still the guy, why not concentrate on electing a Republican Senate for him to work with in 2025, rather than rejecting strong candidates who won’t go along with the “we wuz robbed” excuse?

Glenn Youngkin wisely declined to embrace that narrative in his race for governor of Virginia. Good thing, too. Youngkin could not have performed as well as he did in the Northern Virginia suburbs if he had associated himself with Trump’s claim that the 2020 presidential race was stolen. Given the tightness of the race, Youngkin might well have lost had he carried that banner.

Trump ultimately did not demand that Youngkin do so. Keep in mind, however, that there was no GOP gubernatorial primary. Had there been one, might Youngkin have been forced to go all-in on 2020 fraud claims or else see a rival win the nomination?

I don’t know. I just hope that Trump won’t demand fealty to his claims about the 2020 election, especially from Republicans running in Senate primaries. More importantly, I hope Republican voters won’t base their voting decisions on who has, and who has not, subscribed to Trump’s theory of the last election.

Allahpundit is pessimistic on this score:

Actually, the GOP’s best hope of unseating [Mark] Kelly is Gov. Doug Ducey. Or it was Ducey, until he refused to overturn his state’s 2020 results amid Trump’s insane whining. Now he’s unelectable in Arizona. Give it a few months and Brnovich will end up that way too.

I hope not — at least not because of his handling of Trump’s complaint about the 2020 election.

Trump’s complaint about the Georgia result probably cost Republicans the Senate last time out because it depressed conservative turnout in the Georgia runoff elections. But at least when Trump first lodged these complaints there might still have been an outside chance of the Georgia result being reversed.

A year later, there’s no chance of the 2020 outcome being reversed. Complaining about it now serves no substantial purpose other than upholding the myth of Trump’s invincibility.

Adherence to that myth shouldn’t be a litmus test for GOP candidates. If it is, the odds of Republicans regaining a majority in the Senate will diminish.

And the Golden Turkey Award Goes To…

Posted: 24 Nov 2021 12:43 PM PST

(John Hinderaker)Twice a year, Center of the American Experiment presents its Golden Turkey Award to highlight wasteful government spending in the State of Minnesota. Each contest features four nominees, and thousands of Minnesotans vote to select the winner. This time around, the nominees included a $261,000 grant to the University of Minnesota to teach eagles not to fly into wind turbines; $6.2 million to study development of a half-mile long “land bridge” over the major highway between Minneapolis and St. Paul, the purpose being to remedy “road racism” that occurred 60 years ago when the highway bisected a black neighborhood along with various other neighborhoods; and $2.5 million from the City of Minneapolis to pay “Violence Interrupters” to patrol the streets in brightly colored t-shirts, in lieu of police officers.

But the winner was the Newport Transit Station, a state of the art, $6.45 million bus stop, the nicest and most expensive bus stop in the East Metro. Only problem: no buses stop there. We filmed this short video this morning, at the bus stop, to officially confer the award:

Before covid caused the routes that were supposed to use the Newport station to be shut down entirely, ridership at the $6.45 million bus stop averaged eight people a day.

We got the idea for the Golden Turkey from William Proxmire’s Golden Fleece awards of many years ago. Proxmire’s insight was that if you talk about billions of dollars, it has little impact. But if you tell people that the government is spending $400 per hammer, they get outraged.

Biden’s approval rating falls as inflation rises

Posted: 24 Nov 2021 10:01 AM PST

(Paul Mirengoff)A new survey by NPR/Marist places Joe Biden’s approval at 42 percent. That’s a new low for Biden in this particular poll.

37 percent of those surveyed strongly disapprove of Biden’s performance. Only 13 percent strongly approve.

At 42 percent, Biden’s approval number is exactly the same as the percentage that approves of the way he’s handling the economy. Clearly, “it’s the economy stupid.” Or maybe it’s the stupid way in which Biden is handling the economy.

Inflation is at the forefront of voter discontent with Biden. 39 percent of those surveyed name inflation as the most important economic concern. That’s more than twice the number — 17 percent — that cites wages. Labor shortages (11 percent) and unemployment (10 percent) come next. Labor shortages are part of what’s driving inflation.

I’m surprised the percentage citing inflation as the most important economic concern isn’t higher. As John noted earlier today, according to a Yahoo News/YouGov poll, 77 percent of Americans say inflation is affecting their lives. 51 percent say they’re worried they “won’t be able to afford what they need during the holidays due to inflation.” Notably, only 18 percent say Biden is doing enough to address inflation.

This survey was conducted before Biden ordered the release of 50 million barrels of oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve. This move will probably help bring down the price of gasoline a bit, and it shows that Biden is no longer oblivious to concerns about inflation. However, it’s not likely to bring down the overall inflation number by any significant degree.

Meanwhile, the two spending programs Biden has pushed — one of which was already enacted with some Republican support — will/would increase inflationary pressure. Biden claims that “17 Nobel Prize winners in economics have said that my plan will ease inflationary pressures.” But this statement is highly misleading.

As Ramesh Ponnuru points out, what these economists actually said is that Biden’s plan would “ease longer-term inflationary pressures.” Several of them admit the obvious — that by pumping more money into the economy, Biden’s program would increase inflation in 2022. Any downward pressure on prices would come later, due to hoped-for productivity increases.

Ponnuru argues that the hoped-for productivity increases are probably pie-in-the-sky. He cites the Penn Wharton Budget Model which estimates that the net effect of the Democrats’ bill on the economy, even in the very long term, will be negative.

I doubt that anyone really knows what the long-term effect of Biden’s program on inflation will/would be. But there’s little doubt that in the short-to-medium term, the effect will be inflationary.

The polls discussed above show that this is bad news for Joe Biden and his party. It might be better for them politically if Sens. Manchin and Sinema prevent passage of a reconciliation bill — the larger of the two spending packages.

Jury in trial of men accused of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder to continue deliberations

Jurors in the trial of the three white men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Arbery will continue to deliberate Wednesday. How the nearly all-white panel of jurors decides on a verdict could ultimately hinge on how they view Travis McMichael, who fatally shot Arbery, who was Black, and was the only defendant to testify. They will decide if McMichael, his father, Gregory, and William “Roddie” Bryan are guilty of murder and other crimes in 25-year-old Arbery’s death on Feb. 23, 2020. The McMichaels’ attorneys say the father and son were trying to detain Arbery for police because they believed he was responsible for burglarizing a neighbor’s home and that Travis shot him in self-defense during a struggle over his shotgun. “If the jury thinks that (Travis) McMichael was justified in using deadly force, then I don’t think they’ll convict his father either, or for that matter the other defendant,” Timothy Floyd, a law professor at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, told USA TODAY.

President Biden to nominate Shalanda Young as budget director

President Joe Biden on Wednesday will nominate Shalanda Young to serve as budget director, months after his initial choice, Neera Tanden , was forced to withdraw her nomination over objections by Congress, according to a source. Young, who has served as acting director of the Office of Management and Budget since she was confirmed as Biden’s pick for deputy budget director in March, would become the first Black woman to hold the position. As budget director, Young would permanently lead the powerful executive office and play an outsized role in overseeing Biden’s economic agenda, including working with federal agencies to oversee the implementation of the recently passed $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill and potentially the president’s more sweeping social and climate spending bill should it survive the Senate.

99.) MARK LEVIN

November 24, 2021

November 24, 2021

On Wednesday’s Mark Levin Show, WMAL radio host Larry O’Connor fills in for Mark. All three men charged with the murder of Ahmaud Aubery have been found guilty by a jury of their peers. This case shows that our justice system works, it’s not systemically racist. The white men that shot and killed a young black man were held accountable for their crimes. Despite the media’s warped and perverted view of justice and obsession with the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, the system worked. Then, President Biden is single-handedly damaging the economy and all the Democrats care about is retaining power. If it means lying about everything, they will do it. The media is just as complicit in covering things up and toeing the line for the Democrats in Washington. Later, if you have children in the public school system you have seen the impact of Biden and the impact of your school board. Our whole system is built on the premise of divesting power from the federal government, especially in your neighborhood. Afterward, the recent wins in Virginia are a good sign for the upcoming presidential election. However, there is much work to be done to win locally to ensure that America moves forward.

German Professor Condemns Stigmatization of Unvaccinated

Since COVID-19 vaccines became available almost a year ago, the message from the Biden administration has been clear—everyone must get vaccinated to stop the spread of SARS-CoV-2.
