Republicans will emerge from the Trump era gutted financially, institutionally and structurally. The losses are stark and substantial:
- They lost their congressional power.
- Their two leaders, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, are hamstrung by corporate blacklisting of their election-denying members.
- The GOP brand is radioactive for a huge chunk of America.
- The corporate bans on giving to the 147 House and Senate Republicans who voted against election certification are growing and virtually certain to hold.
- The RNC is a shell of its former self and run by a Trump loyalist.
- Democrats crushed them in fundraising when they were out of power. Imagine their edge with it.
- Sheldon Adelson, the party’s biggest donor, died Monday.
- The NRA is weaker than it has ever been, after massive leadership scandals.
- The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, once controlled by rock-ribbed Republicans, also gave to Democrats in 2020.
- Rank-and-file Republicans are now scattered on encrypted channels like Signal and fearful of Big Tech platforms.
The big picture: Conservatives hold power in the courts and state legislatures, two foundational pieces to rebuilding their party. But they likely will face a raging internal war over policies and political leaders as they grapple with a post-Trump world — whenever that might be.

Anita Dunn, veteran communications and campaign strategist, will join Joe Biden’s White House on a temporary basis, helping him to advance his opening agenda from inside the West Wing, Axios’ Hans Nichols reports.
- Dunn, a former communications director to President Obama, took on an expanded role in Biden’s campaign when it faltered last winter, helping guide it through a party nomination and general election victory.
Dunn will work closely with Kate Bedingfield, who’ll be White House communications director, and press secretary Jen Psaki.
- Dunn played a key role in overseeing strategy and personnel during the campaign and was involved in debate preparation along with her husband, Bob Bauer, a former White House counsel.
- Dunn had planned to return to her public affairs and political consulting firm, SKDKnickerbocker, and still intends to do so later this year.
Most of Biden’s top campaign aides and longtime advisers will come into the White House:
- Chief of staff Ron Klain first worked for Senator Biden in the late 1980s.
- Bruce Reed, who’ll be deputy chief of staff, was a chief of staff to Vice President Biden.
- Longtime confidants Steve Ricchetti and Mike Donilon will be in the West Wing.
Biden announced his American Rescue Plan “to tackle the pandemic and get direct financial assistance and relief to Americans.”
- Biden said that next month, before a joint session of Congress, he’ll lay out a Build Back Better Recovery Plan, with “historic investments in infrastructure and manufacturing, innovation, research and development, and clean energy.”

- We the Pizza, which delivered a few hundred pies to the soldiers from nearby on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, added an option to its online order page for customers to donate to the National Guard at $12 per pie, D.C. Eater reports.
- “While we appreciate the many offers and people who care about our soldiers and airmen, we are not logistically able to accept donations,” a National Guard spokesperson told Axios.
The spokesperson said the Visitors Center has been designated as a rest area for the National Guard members when they are on duty but between shifts.

Civil rights leaders and Black sports icons are publicly taking COVID-19 vaccines to bolster confidence as social media misinformation exploits Black distrust of vaccines, Axios race and justice reporter Russell Contreras writes.

President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled a $1.9 trillion coronavirus plan to end “a crisis of deep human suffering” by speeding up vaccines and pumping out financial help to Americans struggling with the pandemic’s prolonged and devastating economic fallout.
Biden said he hopes his multipronged strategy will put the country on the path to recovery by the end of his administration’s first 100 days, Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar and Bill Barrow report.
The plan includes $1,400 checks for individuals, on top of $600 provided in the last COVID-19 bill. There’s also money for a mass vaccination campaign and a major expansion of local public health efforts.
The rapid expansion of vaccinations to senior citizens across the U.S. has led to bottlenecks, system crashes and hard feelings in many states because of overwhelming demand for the shots.
The vaccines have been rolled out unevenly across the U.S., but some states in the Deep South have had particularly dismal inoculation rates.

Brazil Oxygen: Hospital staffers and relatives of COVID-19 patients are rushing to provide facilities with oxygen cylinders just flown into the Amazon rainforest’s biggest city as doctors choose which patients will get to breathe amid dwindling stocks and an effort to airlift some of them out. The shortage of oxygen in Manaus is such that the local government’s provider is considering diversion some of the supply from neighboring Venezuela. Brazil’s government says a second plane with medical supplies including oxygen will arrive today, and more later, Mauricio Savarese and David Biller report.
Europe Lockdowns: Most of Europe kicked off 2021 with earlier curfews or stay-at-home orders amid sharp spikes in infections increasingly blamed on the more contagious variant first detected in the U.K. But authorities in Spain say the variant causing havoc elsewhere is not to blame for its sharp resurgence of cases and that the country can avoid a full lockdown even as its hospitals fill up. The government has been tirelessly fending off drastic home confinement like the one that paralyzed the economy for nearly three months in the spring of 2020, Aritz Parra reports from Madrid.
China Outbreak: A city in northern China is building a 3,000-unit quarantine facility to deal with an anticipated overflow of patients as COVID-19 cases rise ahead of the Lunar New Year travel rush. State media showed crews leveling earth, pouring concrete and assembling pre-fabricated rooms in farmland outside Shijiazhuang, the provincial capital of Hebei province that has seen the bulk of new cases. It evoked scenes from last year, when China rapidly built field hospitals and turned gymnasiums into isolation centers to cope with the initial outbreak in Wuhan. Both inside and outside the walls of the U.S. Capitol, along with the American flags and Trump 2020 posters, banners and symbols of white supremacy and anti-government extremism were on display as an insurrectionist mob swarmed Congress last week.
But the hate-filled symbolism was not new: It was the culmination of a series of earlier displays of white supremacy during the Trump administration, Christine Fernando and Noreen Nasir report.
As the riots gathered a number of extremist factions under one banner, observers say it echoed the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right Rally” in Charlottesville, Virginia, which brought neo-Nazi, white supremacist and other extremist groups together.
Extremist groups, including the pro-Trump, far-right, anti-government Oath Keepers and the Three Percenters, a loose anti-government network that’s part of the militia movement, were among those descending on the halls of power on Jan. 6.
The hateful imagery included an anti-Semitic “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt created years ago by white supremacists, who sold them on the now-defunct website Aryanwear.
There are fears it could happen again in the days before Joe Biden’s inauguration.
The FBI is tracking an “extensive amount of concerning online chatter,” including calls for armed protests leading up to next week’s presidential inauguration. That’s according to FBI Director Chris Wray, who participated in a law enforcement and military briefing for Vice President Mike Pence, reports Eric Tucker.
Military & Police Involvement: At least 21 current or former members of the U.S. military or law enforcement have been identified as being at or near last week’s Capitol riot, with more than a dozen others under investigation. That’s what an AP review of public records and social media found. In many cases, those who stormed the Capitol appeared to employ tactics, body armor and radio headsets that were similar to those of the police they were confronting. Experts have long warned about extremists recruiting people with military and law enforcement training, and they say the Jan. 6 insurrection saw some of their worst fears realized, Michael Biesecker, Jake Bleiberg and James Laporta report.

Social Media Extremism: Online supporters of Trump are scattering to smaller and more secretive social media platforms. They’re fleeing what they say is unfair treatment by Facebook, Twitter and other big tech firms who have tried to squelch violent threats and misinformation after the deadly siege. Experts say those efforts could send some of Trump’s fiercest supporters to the internet’s dark spaces where conspiracy theories and violent rhetoric run rampant, David Klepper and Amanda Seitz report.
Lone Officer: Amid all the noise since a mob laid siege, an officer hailed as a hero for confronting the insurrectionists and leading them away from Senate chambers has remained silent. But the video speaks volumes. Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman, a Black man facing an overwhelmingly white mob, is the only officer seen for a full minute of the footage. He retreated upstairs and led them away from Senate chambers where senators were still meeting at the time.
Some believe he saved their lives. Goodman hasn’t publicly discussed his actions and he’s asked those who know him to help him maintain privacy. A House bill introduced would give him the Congressional Gold Medal, Jeffrey Collins reports.
Racism Protests: Black activists have denounced a growing narrative among conservatives that equates the deadly siege with last summer’s Black Lives Matter protests. Republican lawmakers defending Donald Trump made the comparison again while building their case against impeachment. The two events were fundamentally different. One was an intentional, direct attack on a democratic institution, with the goal of overturning a fair and free election. The other was a nationwide protest movement focused on racial injustice that occasionally, but not frequently, turned violent, Julie Watson reports.
Sedition: A little-used Civil War-era statute that outlaws waging war against the United States is getting a fresh look after the attacks on the Capitol. The last successful prosecution for seditious conspiracy in the U.S. was in 1995 in a case involving Islamic militants who plotted to bomb New York City landmarks. President-elect Joe Biden already faces the daunting task of steering a massive coronavirus relief bill through a closely divided Congress as the pandemic and its economic fallout grow.
And now he’ll also have to do it with Donald Trump’s impeachment trial looming. While the timing for the trial depends on when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sends the article of impeachment to the Senate, it could happen as soon as Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.
But even with a delay, the impeachment will create fresh complications for the president-elect, Alexandra Jaffe reports.
Democrats on Capitol Hill say they largely want to see Biden continue his even-keeled approach and focus on his agenda, rather than on impeachment, once he enters office.
But once the proceedings start, it’s certain to be tougher for Biden to completely avoid them, with the trial dominating the news cycle and forcing his former opponent back into the spotlight, even as Biden tries to stay focused on the pandemic.
Trump faces a single charge of “incitement of insurrection.” In pursuing conviction, House impeachment managers will be making the case that Trump’s incendiary rhetoric before last week’s mob attack was not isolated. Rather, they will say, it was part of an escalating campaign to question the integrity of the U.S. election and overturn the results, Lisa Mascaro and Mary Clare Jalonick report.

Who Presides? The Constitution says the chief justice is to preside at the impeachment trial of a president. But what about an ex-president? Like so much else about the Constitution, the answer is subject to interpretation. If Trump’s trial begins after Jan. 20, it’s not clear whether Chief Justice John Roberts would make his way to the Senate chamber as he did last year for Trump’s first trial. Impeachment scholars, law professors and political scientists offer differing views, Mark Sherman reports.
Lingering Questions: As President Trump’s turbulent term draws to a close, his highly unconventional approach to the office and its protocols linger over the usually carefully choreographed transfer of power. There are plenty of unanswered questions about how he will spend his last days in office. More pardons may be afoot. There’s also uncertainty about when he will leave town and whether he will reach out to Biden. Last week the White House invited Biden to spend the night of Jan. 19 at Blair House. “It’s like the film ‘Groundhog Day.’ Another year, same story — record global warmth, ” one climate scientist says. “As we continue to generate carbon pollution, we expect the planet to warm up. And that’s precisely what we’re seeing.”
Scientists say 2020 was either the hottest year on record or a close second or third, Seth Borenstein reports.
Several weather groups calculated that 2020 globally was extremely hot, but just how hot depended on who was measuring and how they were doing it. Some groups, including NASA, said it was the hottest year, while others including the U.S. and British weather agencies, said it was a close No. 2.
Either way, they said the hottest six years on record have been the past six, and that Earth is clearly warming because of the burning of coal, oil and natural gas. Other Top Stories A strong, shallow earthquake has shaken Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, toppling homes and buildings, triggering landslides and killing at least 34 people. More than 600 people were injured during the magnitude 6.2 quake that sent people fleeing their homes in the darkness. Authorities were still collecting information about the full scale of casualties and damage in the affected areas. There were reports of many people trapped in the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings. Thousands of displaced people were evacuated to temporary shelters. North Korea has rolled out developmental ballistic missiles designed to be launched from submarines and other military hardware in a massive nighttime parade. The weaponry displays punctuated leader Kim Jong Un’s defiant calls to expand a nuclear and missile program that threatens his Asian rivals and the U.S. Kim took center stage at the parade that was held to celebrate the ruling party meeting that ended this week. Kim’s comments on expanding his weapons programs are likely intended to pressure the incoming U.S. government. President-elect Biden has called Kim a “thug” and criticized his summits with President Trump as spectacles that didn’t make meaningful progress. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top challenger in upcoming elections is promising a tough line toward Iran and the Palestinians. Yet Gideon Saar says he’s confident he has the tools to avoid what appears to be a collision course with the incoming Biden administration. Saar is a former star in the ruling Likud party. He’s accused Netanyahu of turning the movement into a sycophantic tool for survival as the prime minister faces a corruption trial. Saar welcomed Donald Trump’s affinity for Israel, but said Netanyahu’s close ties with the divisive U.S. leader have undermined traditional bipartisan support for Israel. First, the soldiers stole their belongings. Then they took their food. On their third visit, the woman said, the soldiers raped her and her daughter-in-law until they were unable to walk. What sets these assaults in South Sudan apart from many other rapes by soldiers is this: The women brought the men to court and won. Ten years after South Sudan gained its independence and two years after its own deadly civil war ended, large-scale fighting has subsided. But the use of rape as a weapon remains rampant. POLITICO Playbook: How the Constitution could decide Trump’s fate
DRIVING THE DAY
Good morning! I’m JEFFREY ROSEN, president of the National Constitution Center. I’m not JEFFREY A. ROSEN, the acting attorney general of the United States. So please stop tweeting me @rosenjeffrey demanding that I invoke the 25th Amendment!
The matter for debate this morning: Does the Senate have the power to try President DONALD TRUMP after he leaves office and bar him from running again? Sen. TOM COTTON (R-Ark.) has concluded that Congress lacks that power; GOP leader MITCH MCCONNELL has left open the possibility that Congress has the power and that he will consider voting to convict.
My view: The Senate does have the power to try a former president. And if the Senate agrees, the Supreme Court should not, and likely will not, intervene.
Because no former president has been tried before, there are no direct precedents that settle the question.
On one side is J. MICHAEL LUTTIG, an influential former appeals court judge who writes that the Senate can’t hold an impeachment trial once the president leaves office because he cannot “be removed from Office,” as the Impeachment Clause in Article II, Section 4 provides.
But I’m persuaded by other scholars, such as LAURENCE TRIBE and STEPHEN VLADECK, who notes that a person shouldn’t be able to avoid the penalty of disqualification from holding future office by, say, resigning moments before the Senate trial takes place. (The corrupt Secretary of War WILLIAM BELKNAP tried to do exactly that when he resigned in 1876 minutes before the House voted on his impeachment, Vladeck points out. The Senate acquitted BELKNAP, but not before concluding that he could be tried “for acts done as Secretary of War, notwithstanding his resignation of said office.”)
Trump shows no intention of resigning before Jan. 20, but I think the same principle applies.
The bottom line: If the Senate decides to convict Trump, it will probably have the final say. And SCOTUS, in all likelihood, will defer to the Senate’s interpretation of its own rules.
A look at past Supreme Court decisions shows why.
In a 1993 case involving the impeachment of Judge Walter Nixon, the Supreme Court unanimously said that courts shouldn’t second-guess whatever rules the Senate adopts for impeachment trials. Senate rules are “political questions,” the Court said, because Article Section 3 of the Constitution says “the Senate shall have the sole Power to try all impeachments.”
Chief Justice WILLIAM REHNQUIST’S opinion for the Court left open a possible role for Supreme Court review only if the Senate violated the “three specific requirements” in the text of the Constitution: “that the Senate’s members must be under oath or affirmation, that a two-thirds vote is required to convict and that the chief justice presides when the president is tried.”
It’s hard to predict whether five justices on the current Supreme Court would agree to second-guess the timing of a Senate impeachment trial conducted after Trump is gone. Or whether the justices would question the trial of former president Trump if VP KAMALA HARRIS, rather than Chief Justice JOHN ROBERTS, presides.
But given Roberts’ stated efforts to keep the Court out of deciding political questions whenever possible, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Impeachment isn’t the only momentous constitutional question the Court may avoid deciding in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Some constitutional scholars are making the case that the 14th Amendment’s obscure section 3 offers a sounder basis than an impeachment trial for disqualifying Trump from holding future office.
MARCIA COYLE offers a useful primer on the forgotten history of section 3, which the House quoted in the impeachment against Trump. It says that “no person shall hold any office, civil or military, under the States” who “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion.”
COYLE says section 3 could be applied against Trump with a simple majority vote by each chamber of Congress, whereas impeachment requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate. Trump might challenge his disqualification if the new Democratic House and Senate passed it by a simple majority.
Translation: The Democrat-controlled Congress could act unilaterally to bar Trump from holding future office. It also means that, if the Senate refuses to convict Trump in the impeachment trial, his fate may continue to distract Congress and the Supreme Court for weeks or even months as President JOE BIDEN pushes for the consideration of his $1.9 trillion recovery package.
(As a political matter, it’s another question whether Democrats would want to stop the most divisive force in the Republican Party from running again.)
But either way, it’s unlikely, once again, that the Supreme Court would intervene, instead viewing it as a political question that Congress alone can decide.
In my view, that’s a good thing. In the wake of the only domestic assault on the Capitol in American history, it’s healthy for our democracy that representatives and senators are making decisions about what the Constitution means, rather than counting on the Supreme Court to make these decisions for them.
The Framers of the Constitution expected representatives and senators to act virtuously, which they defined as using their powers of reason to transcend selfish passions, such as partisanship, avarice and ambition.
They came to Philadelphia in 1787 because they feared the power of demagogues to incite violent mobs, like Shays’ Rebellion, the mob of debtors in Western Massachusetts who attacked the courthouse.
If there’s any silver lining to the current crisis, it’s focusing America on the urgent need for constitutional education.

Happy Friday, fine Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. Mark my word, leisure suits are going to make a comeback.
Like so much of what I write about lately, today’s topic was inspired by one of the VIP Gold live chats that Stephen Green, Bryan Preston and I do every Thursday. We cover a lot of ground during each one and I often find myself thinking, “I should write about that.” We spent a little time during the most recent episode talking about our least favorite ditz from the Bronx — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Squeaky hasn’t been in the news as much as she likes lately because America has been rather preoccupied with plague and election stuff. She’s been lurking though, waiting for the briefest of lulls in any news cycle so she could painfully remind sane people that she’s still here.
The little commie hit Instagram on Thursday to share some of her trademark insanity. She did it with the earnestness that she uses as a smokescreen to cover up the fact that she just isn’t very bright. It works on the morons in the mainstream media — they all think she’s brilliant. Duping that lot isn’t a difficult feat though.
The stupid was dripping off of AOC as she went on about the “liberation of the southern states,” which Stacey wrote about and mocked in a most entertaining fashion. There’s a video in the post and, as Stacey said, it’s all the more hilarious hearing AOC say this stuff. It’s truly stunning that so many people think she’s clever. Whenever she speaks she reminds me of 5-year-old who’s just learned a new word and keeps misusing it all the while thinking she’s smart.
As is typical with one of these AOC deep thought sessions, the first ridiculous thing she says is rarely the most ridiculous. She has an inexhaustible supply of inanity and likes to build during an interview or speech. Her whopper yesterday was suggesting that the government get involved with reining in “our media environment so that you can’t just spew disinformation and misinformation.”
Of course, when a commie says “disinformation and misinformation” she means any truth that’s countering the disinformation and misinformation narrative she’s peddling.
The creep factor of her casual state-run media suggestion is off the charts.

So first, Ocasio-Cortez wants to “liberate” southern states run by Republicans. Then she wants to drag her political opponents in front of a tribunal for some bizarre struggle session. Finally, she wants the government to reign in the media. Quite the little revolutionary there. Fidel Castro would be proud.
Every time she opens her mouth, her complete ignorance of history, economics, and even current events shines through. All we can hope is that Ocasio-Cortez stays the mouthpiece for the House Democrats until 2022 and remains convinced that some large swath of America wants to persecute their political opponents. Until then, she doesn’t need to worry about those red southern states. We’re doing just fine.
What we were discussing during our live chat is the truly frightening aspect to all of this. Democratic leadership in the House is ELDERLY. It’s an octogenarian shuffleboard-fest over there. The Pelosi wing won’t be around long. AOC is 31 going on a very stupid 14. She’s going to be polluting the American political landscape for a while. It’s a safe bet to say that no matter how long she’s around, she won’t get any smarter or more mature, especially if the media keeps feting her as the heart and brains of the new Democrats. This is a woman who obviously loves reading and believing her own press.
So we’ve got that to look forward to now.

- President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday outlined his administration’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief proposal. The package—which, after last month’s relief bill, faces a tough road in Congress—would include another round of $1,400 stimulus checks, an additional unemployment benefits boost, increased child tax credits, $350 billion in state and local aid, $20 billion for vaccine distribution, and a federal $15/hour minimum wage, among other provisions.
- Initial jobless claims increased by 181,000 week-over-week to 965,000 last week, the Labor Department reported on Thursday. About 18.4 million people were on some form of unemployment insurance during the week ending December 26, compared with 2.2 million people during the comparable week in 2019.
- A study of 20,000 health care workers in the United Kingdom found that individuals who contract and recover from COVID-19 are likely to be immune from the virus for at least five months. But, the researchers add, people who become reinfected are still liable to carry the virus and transmit it to others.
- Late last night, the federal government executed Corey Johnson, a 52-year-old man convicted of murdering seven people in 1992. Johnson is the 12th federal inmate put to death by the Trump administration.
- Biden plans to name Jaime Harrison—former South Carolina Democratic party chair and unsuccessful Democratic challenger to Sen. Lindsey Graham in 2020—to be the next chair of the Democratic National Committee.
- The United States confirmed 240,916 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 12.2 percent of the 1,976,376 tests reported coming back positive. An additional 3,925 deaths were attributed to the virus on Thursday, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 388,529. According to the COVID Tracking Project, 128,947 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 30,628,175 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed nationwide, and 11,148,991 have been administered.
Country Braces for More Armed Protests
An internal FBI bulletin earlier this week warned that additional armed demonstrations will likely take place in Washington, D.C. and all 50 state capitals this Sunday, ahead of President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday. FBI Director Chris Wray warned of an “extensive amount of concerning online chatter” yesterday in a joint press conference with Vice President Mike Pence, who, for all intents and purposes, has been carrying out the bulk of executive branch responsibilities in recent days.
“One of the real challenges in this space is trying to distinguish what’s aspirational versus what’s intentional,” Wray said on Thursday. “We’re looking at individuals who may have an eye towards repeating that same kind of violence that we saw last week.” More than 6,000 National Guardsmen were deployed to Washington this week to protect the Capitol, and nearly 15,000 more are expected to arrive in the coming days. An inauguration rehearsal scheduled for Sunday was canceled last night due to security concerns, and the National Mall is expected to be closed on Wednesday, barring supporters from gathering for the festivities.
“We all lived through that day of January the 6th, and as the president made clear yesterday, we are committed to an orderly transition,” Pence said yesterday after being briefed on security measures. “We’re going to ensure that we have a safe inauguration, that President-elect Joe Biden, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are sworn in as the new president and vice president of the United States in a manner consistent with our history and our traditions,” he said.
But officials aren’t just worried about D.C. Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, told reporters on Monday the National Guard is monitoring state capitals across the country for potential unrest: “We’re keeping a look across the entire country to make sure that we’re monitoring, and that our Guards in every state are in close coordination with their local law enforcement agencies to provide any support requested.”
Biden Hits the Ground Running … Left
President-elect Biden formally introduced his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan last night, saying “it’s not hard to see that we are in the middle of a once-in-several generation economic crisis within a once-in-several generation public health crisis.”
“There is no time to wait,” he continued. “We have to act and act now. This is what the economists are telling us.”
As it turns out, we have a piece up from an economist—Brian Riedl of the Manhattan Institute—on the site. His conclusion on the proposal? “While a few of its proposals are necessary, too many others were just pulled from the old Democratic wishlist.”
What does Riedl think Biden’s team got right?
Biden would invest $160 billion in a national vaccination program and related health policies to stem the pandemic. Given the slow, bureaucratic rollout of the vaccines over the past month, it is absolutely necessary to expand testing and contact tracing, as well as launch community vaccination centers free of charge for vaccine recipients. Additionally, Biden would spend $170 billion preparing K-12 schools and institutions of higher learning to reopen safely within the administration’s first 100 days.
These two policies highlight Washington’s most pressing priorities: ending the pandemic, and then safely reopening schools so that moms and dads can go back to work and resuscitate the economy.
And wrong?
Given that Congress only weeks ago enacted $900 billion in legislation to extend unemployment benefits and provide more aid to vulnerable businesses (among many other provisions), the additional holes for Congress to legitimately plug are rather limited. Yet President-elect Biden proposes more than $1 trillion in mostly-extraneous proposals.
Most egregious is a proposal to more-than-double the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour—including for employees who regularly receive additional tips, for which the current minimum wage is $2.13. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that even gradually raising the minimum wage to $15 by 2025 in a growing economy would likely kill 1.3 million jobs, and perhaps as many as 3.7 million. Imposing a drastic minimum wage increase on small businesses that are already struggling to stay afloat during a recession is especially absurd. Moreover, forcing restaurants, which are failing at record rates, to raise their own tipped minimum wage by 600 percent is economic malpractice. Perhaps high-cost cities like New York City and San Francisco can afford a much higher minimum wage, but other parts of America with lower incomes and prices will not be able to absorb this policy. It has no business in a relief package.
In her Uphill newsletter today, Haley looks at this proposed legislation’s likelihood of making it through a sharply divided, albeit Democratic-controlled, Senate.
Reconciliation allows the party that controls the Senate to approve legislation with a simple majority instead of 60 votes. There are rules that limit the kinds of policies that can be included in reconciliation bills, though, complicating any such attempt.
Biden has said he hopes to pass his initial $1.9 trillion plan under regular order instead of reconciliation, meaning he would need support from at least 10 Republicans in the Senate. Unless this package changes substantially in the coming weeks—cutting items like the minimum wage hike and funding for state and local governments—it’s difficult to imagine that happening.
Many GOP senators are likely to recoil at the price tag of the proposal. Republicans resisted Democratic calls for more than $2 trillion in relief for months leading up to the November election. In December, Congress passed a $900 billion compromise package.

- In the wake of last week’s events, Rich Lowry revisited Michael Anton’s (in)famous 2016 “Flight 93 Election” essay, in which Anton urged Republicans to “charge the cockpit” (vote for Trump), or risk “dying” under a Clinton presidency. “Donald Trump finally did exactly what the foremost metaphor associated with his political rise would have suggested,” Lowry writes. “He plowed his plane straight into the ground.” Anton, Lowry continues, “wrote as if the end of the republic were upon us, and there’s nothing like a rabble storming a citadel of American democracy—assaulting police officers, ransacking the place and disrupting a constitutional procedure—to shake confidence in the stability of our system. Of course, it was the man Anton believed could be our savior who whipped up and urged on this crowd. The mob didn’t charge the cockpit metaphorically, but charged the Capitol literally, in the grip of a more extreme, rough-hewn version of Anton’s logic and narrative.”
- Missing from a lot of the conversation about whether President Trump should have been impeached, and whether he should be convicted in the Senate, is the simple fact that the vast majority of Republican voters still like the guy. One can certainly make a compelling case that officials should not take those political considerations into account when making such hefty constitutional decisions, but they clearly do. In a piece for the Wall Street Journal, Joshua Jamerson reports from South Carolina on how elected officials who believe Trump to have been reckless—like freshman GOP Rep. Nancy Mace—are attempting to bridge the divide. “It’s clear that people, some people, have been brainwashed,” Mace said. “And I’m grappling with: How do we carefully and honestly pull these people out of it and bring them back into reality?”
- On the latest episode of The Argument podcast, host Jane Coaston leads one of the most thorough and elucidating conversations on Big Tech and Section 230 that we’ve heard. Coaston, a libertarian, believes the law should remain exactly as it was written. But she’s joined by Klon Kitchen and Danielle Keats Citron—hailing from the right and the left, respectively—who both want to reform the regulation for entirely different reasons. “The reality is that these companies have absolutely failed to win and to keep the public trust, and that in an especially heightened context like what we’re experiencing right now, that is a real problem,” Kitchen says. Coaston wonders if politicians are whipping up anti-tech fervor for political gain. “A lot of people are making it seem as if getting banned from Twitter in essentially a no shirt, no shoes, no service type issue is a First Amendment issue,” she says. “It just seems to be the kind of encouraged misunderstanding, the fanning of the flames of misunderstanding that we saw that helped us get into this mess.”
- In a helpful legal explainer for the New York Times, University of Texas Law professor Stephen Vladeck certifies that, yes, the Senate can convict a president who has left office. Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution lays out the two distinct purposes of the impeachment trial: To remove officials from office and to disqualify them from holding federal office in the future. The latter goal is key in the upcoming trial, which is set to begin after President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration. “The disqualification power is both the primary evidence and the central reason the Constitution allows for the impeachment of former officers,” Vladeck writes. “Were it otherwise, an officer facing impeachment, or an officer who has already been impeached and is about to be removed, could also avoid disqualification simply by resigning.”

Sullivan, John and James have been on opposite sides of the ideological spectrum since the George Floyd video was released last spring. And both have built reputations of being provocateurs with John helping Antifa and Black Lives Matter while James works closely with the Proud Boys. John Sullivan was arrested yesterday in connection with instigating the Capitol riots on January 6th. A video of him and CNN photojournalist Jade Sacker emerged this week that shows them giddy following the murder of Trump-supporter Ashli Babbitt. Now, Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani is wondering why a text message from James Sullivan was not revealed during the President’s second impeachment hearings in Congress.
According to the text, James Sullivan makes a very bold claim: “I’m currently working with the FBI to expose and place total blame on John and the 226 members of antifa that instigated the Capitol ‘riot’ I was able to get my agent out of trouble along with three other uthan’s.” While the focus by mainstream media, Democrats, and Establishment Republicans has been on claims that President Trump stirred his supporters to storm the Capitol Building during a joint session of Congress on January 6th, every day brings more evidence that Antifa and other left-wing “activists” incited the crowd to commit crimes. Videos of Antifa members secretly embedded with the Trump-supporters appear to reinforce these claims. This all jibes with the credible conspiracy theory that Democrats or other interested parties planned this “false flag” attack in order to push for impeachment. Investigative journalist Paul Sperry claimed word on The Hill is that the “snap impeachment” was launched to distract from a dump of declassified documents expected to land today or Monday.
The more we learn about the Capitol riots, the clearer it becomes that we’re not being told the truth by Democrats and mainstream media. Insiders claim ‘snap impeachment’ by Pelosi was to distract from imminent declassified bombshells

Some have claimed the reason is to prevent him from running in 2024, but that makes absolutely no sense when we consider their claims that he “lost” the election. There seems to be a logical explanation emerging from the corners of Washington DC that makes much more sense. With President Trump declassifying documents pertaining to both Russiagate and Obamagate, the bombshells that should come from there need to be covered up by Kabuki Theater through impeachment. According to investigative journalist Paul Sperry:
Others have giving a similar account off the record to NOQ Report, but they’re not pointing to the declassification. Two sources with knowledge of the situation claim the move to impeach followed a coordinated “false flag” effort to spark the riots on Capitol Hill on January 6 that left six people dead was to take focus off further revelations about voter fraud.. ‘We Did It!’: CNN’s Jade Sacker caught celebrating with BLM instigator John Sullivan during Capitol riots
Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:00 AM PST The rush is on at CNN, NPR, and NBC to distance themselves from Jade Sacker, a photojournalist who has worked extensively with these mainstream media outlets. Her videos are being systematically removed from websites and YouTube channels after news broke that she was directly involved in the instigation of riots at Capitol Hill on January 6th.
The video, streamed by Black Lives Matter leader John Earle Sullivan, shows Sacker and him giddy following the shooting death of Ashli Babbit. Shortly afterwards, CNN host Anderson Cooper interview the two as they portrayed the events at the Capitol as a direct results of right-wing extremists. According to The Gateway Pundit: After the Capitol was stormed John Sullivan appeared with CNN photojournalist Jade Sacker on CNN that night. CNN did not identify Sullivan as an Antifa-BLM protest leader. They mention Insurgence, USA but not that it is a radical leftist organization. They do not mention that Sullivan was arrested in Utah during unrest in 2020. CNN did not reveal that the two were working together inside the US Capitol. Jade Sacker has done work for NPR, CNN, NBC and other liberal outlets. Sullivan has since been arrested and charged by the FBI for his participation in starting the riots that left six people dead and sparked the second impeachment of President Trump. Many Trump-supporters have gathered and shared evidence that the events were not just sparked by Trump-supporters but also Antifa and Black Lives Matter provocateurs embedded with them to generate anger. Outrage is spreading across social media as the video goes viral. The death of Babbitt appears to be directly connected to the instigators of the riots. Some are saying it was a “false flag” event planned out well ahead of time. The Gateway Pundit continued: Moments after Sullivan captured Air Force veteran Ashli Babbitt getting shot and killed in the Capitol, a blonde woman accompanying Sullivan who appears to be his accomplice, Jade Sacker, gleefully exclaims, “We did it!” “You were right! We did it,” she boasts. “Dude, I was trying to tell you. I couldn’t say much,” Sullivan replies. “Is this not going to be the best film you’ve ever made in your life?” While the FBI and the mainstream media insist there is no evidence Antifa or BLM played any role in the deadly mob that stormed the Capitol last Wednesday, Sullivan admits in the footage that he strategically wore a Trump hat and carried a “big ass camera” at the rally to guise himself as a journalist and mislead law enforcement and the media about his true motives. Feds admit Capitol ‘siege’ was planned in advance by Trump haters, not Trump supporters

Even CNN agrees that everything captured in photos and video on Jan. 6 was probably an unassociated riot that conveniently resulted in Trump supporters being framed as the culprits when they were actually the ones trying to get the rioters rioters to stop breaking windows and wreaking havoc. “Evidence uncovered so far, including weapons and tactics seen on surveillance video, suggests a level of planning that has led investigators to believe the attack on the U.S. Capitol was not just a protest that spiraled out of control,” CNN reported. “Among the evidence the FBI is examining are indications that some participants at the Trump rally at the Ellipse, outside the White House, left the event early, perhaps to retrieve items to be used in the assault on the Capitol.” Antifa, BLM likely responsible for Capitol “siege”Investigators and prosecutors are now probing the command and control aspect of the attack, which clearly required a high level of planning. Law enforcement is looking at travel and communications records to identify, supposedly, who was behind it all. “It is absolutely ludicrous to believe that the storming was not pre-planned” one Twitter user wrote in response to the news. “To have people coming in tactical gear and away from the actual rally where Trump was still speaking at the time. History will right this ship but in the moment it’s all political.” CNN is likewise suggesting, amazingly, that the riot at the Capitol was a premeditated invasion set up by people who are not, in fact, associated with Trump, and who certainly do not support him. “But Democrats impeached before they had any information from investigators,” tweeted conservative Christian writer Carmine Sabia about the news. These same folks were presumably also behind the election heist. Trump and his supporters were drawing too much attention to the stolen election and not backing down, so those in opposition to free and fair elections decided to take action by staging an alleged act of “sedition” against the federal government. “Why did Nancy Pelosi jump into an impeachment on President Trump before any investigation into who were the ones responsible for this attack on our Capitol was conducted?” asked one Trending Politics commenter. “She was in a big hurry to do this just like the other fake political impeachment. Drawing lots with coronavirus vaccination

That suggests thinking that there may be something particularly dangerous about that lot. In the video report from NBC 7, a woman who had an allergic reaction and a four-hour hospital stay after receiving the first shot of the two-shot vaccination regimen on Wednesday at the Vaccination Super Station is interviewed. She says she feels fatigued and sore. She also says she does not want to have a second shot even though she has taken other vaccines throughout her life, including a flu vaccine recently. “I can’t go through that again,” she states. Who could blame her? Initial studies from drug companies that created the experimental coronavirus vaccines indicate side effects tend to be worse after the second shot. Information from the vaccine injury reporting system of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates the first dose alone of the experimental coronavirus vaccines is causing many times more adverse events than flu shots cause. Trump declassifies ‘foot-high’ stack of Russiagate, Obamagate documents; set for release within days

Governor Newsom recall at tipping point

The petitioners now have nine weeks left — until the March 17 deadline — to amass the additional 500,000 signatures required to add it to the ballot. Article originally published at Liberty Nation. A substantial number of his constituents seem to abhor his punishing, hypocritical leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. The governor made an egregious unforced error of considerable magnitude back in November. After repeatedly urging Californians to stay home because of the virus, he was photographed dining at the high-end Napa Valley restaurant French Laundry, whose menu offers the popular white truffle and caviar dinner that sets you back $1,200 per person. Also around his table were a gaggle of lobbyists, painting a troubling picture of how business may be done in Sacramento. Pictures of the event were widely circulated, showing the privileged entourage dined without masks the entire evening. Not to be outdone, Newsom’s fellow Democratic colleague San Francisco Mayor London Breed and friends partied at the French Laundry, too. The blatant flouting of the mask mandates, lockdowns, and social distancing Newsom has demanded statewide since early last summer was enough hypocrisy on display to give the recall effort new life. Within two months, the million-signature milestone was met and has “huge momentum,” according to Representative Darrell Issa (R-CA), who added:
In attempts to stem the march of COVID-19 in California, Newsom has embraced increasingly draconian policies that have resulted in statewide devastation of small businesses, even as the Hollywood movie industry enjoys special lobbyist-crafted carve-outs to continue as “critical infrastructure.” The campaign of the wealthy, privileged, and industry-connected against the powerless small business owners was perfectly dramatized in a viral video in December. It showed a restaurant owner who had spent thousands of dollars to install an outside seating area, only to have diktats by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Newsom shut her down. Across the street, just yards away, a movie production company shooting a film set up elaborate tents in an empty parking lot to feed its crew in open air. The beleaguered owner was in tears. In November, Newsom lost a landmark court case brought by two Republicans that ruled his autocratic overreach during the pandemic unconstitutional. The presiding judge issued an injunction that has prevented the governor from issuing further executive orders under the California Emergency Services Act (CESA.) Unbowed, Newsom began lecturing Californians on what they could and could not do on Thanksgiving and how it was essential to wear a mask between bites. This from the governor who ignored his own social-distancing and lockdown mandates to dine out mask-free with friends, and during the Christmas season. closed all restaurants and issued a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew. Leaked video reveals Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s internal discussions before Trump ban
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:06 PM PST Investigative journalism nonprofit Project Veritas on Thursday released a leaked video that appears to show Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s internal discussions before President Donald Trump’s account was banned on the social media platform following the breach of the U.S. Capitol building. Article originally published at The Epoch Times. “You should always feel free to express yourself in whatever format manifestation feels right,” Dorsey said in the clip, purportedly secretly filmed by a Twitter “insider whistleblower.” “We are focused on one account [@realDonaldTrump] right now, but this is going to be much bigger than just one account, and it’s going to go on for much longer than just this day, this week, and the next few weeks, and it’s going to go on beyond the inauguration,” Dorsey added. “And we have to expect that and we have to be ready for that.” “So, the focus is certainly on this account and how it ties to real-world violence. But also, we need to think much longer-term around how these dynamics play out over time. I don’t believe this is going away anytime soon,” Dorsey told staff in the clip. Project Veritas suggested in a Twitter post that the video leak is evidence of “censorship gone wild.” Twitter permanently banned Trump from its platform on Jan. 8, two days after a mob broke into the U.S. Capitol during a joint session of Congress convened to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election. The company alleged that Trump had incited the violence. The move was met with criticism from world leaders, including the president of France and chancellor of Germany. Trump accused Twitter of colluding with the Democrats. Facebook and YouTube have also removed Trump’s accounts. In the leaked video that has accumulated over two million views in a few hours, Dorsey suggested he may be planning to enforce “much bigger” actions than the ban of Trump on the platform, making reference to a company purge of QAnon linked accounts. A large number of pro-Trump accounts have recently been deleted by Twitter. “You know, the U.S. is extremely divided. Our platform is showing that every single day,” Dorsey said. “And our role is to protect the integrity of that conversation and do what we can to make sure that no one is being harmed based off that. And that is our focus.” James O’Keefe, founder of the journalism watchdog group, said Thursday that further leaks from the social media giant are coming from other whistleblowers. “Stay tuned. They may be private companies, but they have more power than all three branches of government,” O’Keefe told viewers. Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment by The Epoch Times. The clip’s release follows a statement from Dorsey on Jan. 13 in which he acknowledged that the company’s decision to remove Trump was divisive and set a dangerous precedent. “Having to take these actions fragment [sic] the public conversation. They divide us. They limit the potential for clarification, redemption, and learning. And sets a precedent I feel is dangerous: the power an individual or corporation has over a part of the global public conversation,” Dorsey wrote on Twitter. “I do not celebrate or feel pride in our having to ban [Trump] from Twitter, or how we got here. After a clear warning we’d take this action, we made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter. Was this correct?” Dorsey continued. “I believe this was the right decision for Twitter. We faced an extraordinary and untenable circumstance, forcing us to focus all of our actions on public safety. BLM instigator of Capitol riots, John Earle Sullivan, arrested
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 04:07 PM PST The deadly riots at the Capitol last week that have sparked Big Tech cancelations and prompted another impeachment of President Trump were instigated in part by Black Lives Matter and Antifa “activists,” according to multiple media reports. One of the highest profile suspects, John Earle Sullivan from Utah, has been arrested.
He was there and documented the murder of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot in the neck by law enforcement. His arrest warrant, available here, lists three reasons for probable cause:
Mainstream media reports have, from the start, claimed that the riots were initiated entirely by supporters of President Trump. Moreover, they have gone so far as to doctor a video to support the contention of Democrats and even some Republicans that the President sparked the attack by calling on his supporters to storm the Capitol.
According to Information Liberation, Sullivan was filmed instigating the attack on the Capitol: Newly released video shows former Black Lives Matter organizer John Sullivan both allegedly instigating protesters to commit crimes and committing crimes himself while inside the Capitol Building — yet somehow it appears he has managed to escape any charges. The Grayzone Project‘s Max Blumenthal created this excellent compilation which he shared Wednesday night on Twitter:
One America News reporter Jack Posobiec said on Twitter, “According to the FBI, anarchist John Sullivan told police officers to stand down in the Speaker’s Lobby, then agitated the crowd to attack the doors and windows while he filmed. Moments later Ashley Babbitt was shot and killed.”
Sullivan was a guest on CNN after the riots that left between four and six people dead. The circumstances surrounding the deaths of two police officers are still being investigated. Some media outlets have reported that they did not die as a result of injuries sustained at the riots on January 6. This story will be buried by mainstream media and suppressed by Big Tech. The arrest of John Earle Sullivan, a known Black Lives Matter leader and provocateur, belies the accepted narrative that Trump-supporters alone caused the riots. False flag? Panic buttons ripped out of Ayanna Pressley’s office BEFORE the Capitol riot

According to staffers, the rioters had not entered the office and nobody had been there who could have taken them out, so they must have been removed the early morning of January 6th or earlier. According to the NY Post: When rioters stormed the US Capitol last week, Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s staffers discovered that panic buttons in the Massachusetts Democrat’s office had been torn out before the mob overran the building, according to a report. “Every panic button in my office had been torn out — the whole unit,” Sarah Groh, Pressley’s chief of staff, told The Boston Globe. Pressley — who has alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that puts her in the high-risk category for COVID-19 — is among the four Democratic pols in “The Squad,” which has incurred the wrath of President Trump and his supporters. “I was deeply concerned,” Groh told the Globe about going to the Capitol on Jan. 6. “It felt like the heat was being turned up in terms of the rhetoric and Trump’s aims to incite violence.” During the siege, staffers in Pressley’s office barricaded the entrance with furniture and water jugs that had piled up during the pandemic. Groh pulled out gas masks and looked for the special panic buttons in the office, but realized they had been removed. Some Trump-supporters and many unaffiliated conspiracy theorists have combed through video and circumstantial evidence to highlight the possibility of the riots being a “false flag” event intended to stir up negative sentiment for President Trump. We documented earlier this week how mainstream media had been doctoring videos to make it seem like the President stirred his supporters into attacking the Capitol. Now, the President has been impeached by Congress for a second time over the event. “Fact-checkers” have attempted to debunk claims that Antifa and others incited the riots that sent hundreds of Trump supporters into the Capitol Building. But it seems more and more likely that the debunking attempts were premature as evidence continues to mount supporting a false flag event. It could just be a coincidence that highly secure panic buttons specific to Ayanna Pressley’s office were all removed right before the Capitol riots. President Trump’s Masada Moment

But regarding what that “something” is, and what we need to do, there is profound disagreement throughout the nation. The violence in which the sacred ground of our nation’s Capitol building was violated by unruly hooligans, resulting in the death of five, is a low point in our history. Clearly, something is wrong. But we won’t be able to fix it until we define it correctly. Those on the right are entirely correct that the tone of violence, chaos and nihilism was set by the left. Our cities and institutions have been vandalized and looted with impunity by the Black Lives Matter and antifa movements over the last several years, receiving support and endorsement by Democratic Party leaders and, sadly, many business leaders. After a violent mob pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus in Baltimore, a journalist asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “Shouldn’t that be done by a commission or the city council, not a mob in the middle of the night throwing it into the harbor?” Pelosi’s response: “People will do what they do.” The speaker tore up, for all to see on international television, the president’s State of the Union address after he finished discharging that constitutionally directed duty. I, of course, could go on. The point is that the answer to horrible behavior is not horrible behavior. It’s the absolute secularization of the nation, the purge of the Almighty from our public life, the crowning politicians king of the universe, that is destroying us. Our democratic republic, our freedom, is vital. But with no absolutes, it deteriorates to chaos. It is why President Lincoln refused to let the issue of the spread of slavery be submitted to democracy. There must be absolutes that precede politics. It is the Ten Commandments where we learn that murder and theft are forbidden. When life and property are turned over to politics, the result is the chaos we now see. The nation’s high court, in many bad decisions over the last century, has undermined our Constitution as a limiting factor on federal government power. But the critical moment of detaching the nation as a free nation under God occurred in 1973, in the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. The federal government took charge of defining life and giving women license to destroy it. Then, in 2015, in the Obergefell v. Hodges decision, government seized the authority to define, or redefine, the sacred institution of marriage. President Trump had a successful presidency in his effort to “Make America Great Again.” A powerful economy was restored and has sustained us through the COVID-19 crisis. Our courts are now filled with principled, conservative judges. The United States led the way to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and a new, unbelievable peace has been achieved in the Middle East. But America cannot be great if America, as Alexis de Tocqueville said, is not good. President Trump now has an opportunity to sign off on a powerful note that will totally change the tenor that Democrats want to set. He cannot control Democrats’ ability to politicize events and impeach him. But, if they do it, he can take control by resigning. He can take the high, high ground, in contrast to their low, low ground. He can take responsibility for the horror that just occurred at the Capitol, because it occurred on his watch. And he can use the opportunity to declare that America must be a free nation under God, and that this is the great challenge that faces us going forward. He can turn the reins of leadership, in these waning days, to Vice President Mike Pence, an upright Christian man and American patriot who could speak truth to the nation as the unruly Democratic mob takes charge and begins its long campaign to drag our nation into the abyss. Trump Condemns Capitol Riot, Impeaching You, Useful Idiots

by Gary Bauer: Trump Condemns Capitol Riot President Trump issued a very strong statement last night condemning the riot that took place last week on Capitol Hill. You may well have missed it because the president has been banned from virtually all of the social media platforms where it normally would have been posted. Here are a few excerpts of the president’s remarks: “I want to be very clear: I unequivocally condemn the violence that we saw last week. . . Making America Great Again has always been about defending the rule of law, supporting the men and women of law enforcement and upholding our nation’s most sacred traditions and values. . . “No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. No true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law enforcement or our great American flag. No true supporter of mine could ever threaten or harass their fellow Americans. “If you do any of these things, you are not supporting our movement. You are attacking it, and you are attacking our country.” As the president noted, the MAGA movement is not the movement that has been engaged in violence. MAGA rallies are not violent. The violence happens only when leftists attack the people at the rallies. Conservatives are not the ones who assault police officers. Conservatives believe in the rule of law, and we back the Blue. That’s why so many law enforcement unions endorsed President Trump last year. Let me remind you of something that many people have forgotten. Democrats have spent four years creating the narrative that Trump and his supporters were dangerous and violent, and they did “create” that narrative. Back in 2016, it was discovered that DNC operatives actually hired people to infiltrate Trump rallies to instigate violence. And the media dutifully exaggerated that violence and blamed it on Trump supporters. It was all fake news. Meanwhile, Antifa brags about its violence. Its reason for existing is to attack and intimidate conservatives. There’s no question that there are fringe nuts on the right too. But they are just that – a fringe, which the president has repeatedly condemned. No one defends and justifies them, unlike the political violence on the left. (See below.) Impeaching You For the second time, House Democrats abused the rules to impeach us. And we need to be clear about this in our own minds. If you believe that unborn children deserve legal protection, and Donald Trump fought very hard for the sanctity of life, the left impeached you. If you believe in religious liberty and want your church to be open, which President Trump has fought for, the left impeached you. If you believe in the Second Amendment, which President Trump has protected, the left impeached you. If you own a small business and have worked hard to save it this past year, as President Trump was fighting to reopen our schools and the economy, the left impeached you. If you believe in real border security, which President Trump has fought for, the left impeached you. If you believe in conservative judges who will interpret the law as written rather than rewrite it from the bench, and President Trump has appointed a lot of conservative judges, the left impeached you. As Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats have admitted, this sham impeachment is about denying Donald Trump any chance at a comeback in 2024 because the left despises you and our values. Tapper Goes Over The Top Mast questioned the House Democrats’ lack of rules and procedure for yesterday’s “snap impeachment.” Normally, the House Judiciary Committee would hold hearings, conduct some investigation, depose witnesses, etc. None of that happened this time. Instead, articles of impeachment were drafted in secret and delivered straight to the House floor for a rushed vote. When Mast dared to question this gross abuse of the rules for a vindictive, partisan impeachment, Tapper had the audacity to question Mast’s patriotism, saying, “Congressman Brian Mast, a Republican from Florida, who lost his legs, by the way, fighting for democracy abroad, although I don’t know about his commitment to it here in the United States. . .” Tapper should be fired. But there was no push back yesterday from anyone on CNN. The talking heads on CNN have repeatedly made excuses for Antifa and the BLM rioters. And they are still justifying the left’s violence. This week, Don Lemon and Chris Cuomo once again raved about the rioting over the summer. There it is, folks. They have freedom of speech. We don’t. They have the right to assemble. We don’t. And, apparently, they have a right to engage in violence too. Useful Idiots Here are the other nine House Republicans who bought into yesterday’s insane kangaroo impeachment court:
> I hope all of them are challenged and defeated in the primaries. As I explained above, what happened yesterday was an attack not just on Donald Trump but on all conservatives. These Republicans, including Liz Cheney, were not willing to side with the Americans who have been under constant attack from the left. And, by the way, they are the same Americans who defended her father when he was under constant attack from the left. The Totalitarian Left No, AOC wants to censor Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Breitbart and the handful of conservative media outlets that don’t toe the liberal line. And who would these media “truth commission” members be? Hillary Clinton? James Comey? Nancy Pelosi? Eric Swalwell? Adam Schiff? Talk about finding a needle in a haystack! It will be hard to find leftists one could trust with the truth. And, by the way, they are all part of a movement that doesn’t believe in truth! Trump Administration Condemns Chinese Claims about Forced Sterilization and Abortion
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:54 PM PST by Lisa Correnti: The Chinese government released a study claiming that “in the process of eradicating extremism” that Uyghur women had been “emancipated” from being “baby making machines.” The report also claimed that “gender equality and reproductive health” were promoted. The Uyghurs live predominantly in the northwest region of China and are largely Muslim. The Chinese government has been charged with human rights abuses against the Uyghurs including placing them in concentration camps and forcing Uyghur women into sterilizations and abortions. The Chinese government says Uyghur women are now “more confident and independent.” U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo immediately responded to these new claims, “Uyghur women are not emancipated by forced abortions and sterilizations.” U.S. Ambassador on International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback said he was “Appalled and disgusted” at the Chinese lies. “Coercive population control is not reproductive health care. [Uyghur] women deserve to enjoy their religious freedom and unalienable rights with dignity to make their own choices,” he said. The Chinese government-issued report said “extremism had incited people to resist family planning and its eradication had given Uyghur women more autonomy when deciding whether to have children.” China has been under international scrutiny for the gross human rights abuses of religious minorities following a report by German researcher Dr. Adrian Zenz. Released last June in collaboration with the Associated Press, it documents widespread violations by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP) “to forcibly suppress birthrates among ethnic Uyghur communities.” Uyghur women failing to comply with fertility restrictions were sent to “re-education” centers, had pregnancies terminated through forced abortion, or were forcibly sterilized. Reports issued by the U.S. Department of Labor and the United Nations found that over one million Muslim and other minorities have been forcibly detained. Zenz concluded in his findings that the CCP human rights violations in Xinjiang “meet the criteria for genocide as defined by the U.N. Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.” These revelations “show the Chinese Communist Party’s disparaging view of religious faith, its patronizing view of women, and its complete disrespect for the value of human life,” said China human rights expert Reggie Littlejohn. Littlejohn, founder and president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers told the Friday Fax that what’s missing from the China Daily article is that “CCP-backed scholars have identified ‘as a key obstacle [to the CCP’s goals in Xinjiang] the religious belief that ‘the fetus is a gift from God.’’ By that definition, believers in virtually all the major world religions, including Christianity, would be identified as “religious extremists.” Littlejohn praised the Trump administration for taking a leading role worldwide in forcefully condemning the CCP’s atrocities against the Uyghurs. “We call upon the Biden administration to strongly condemn human rights atrocities perpetrated by the CCP in Xinjiang, and to issue a genocide determination. We further call upon them not to renew funding for the UNFPA [United Nations Population Fund], absent complete transparency and proof that the UNFPA is not collaborating with the CCP’s egregious population control program.” President Trump signed the Uyghur Human Rights Policy Act which had bipartisan Congressional support in June. The Vile Racism of a Biden Nominee
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:32 PM PST Does his pick to enforce civil rights laws still believe whites are mentally, physically, and spiritually inferior to blacks? by Douglas Andrews: Imagine if, in 2016, Donald Trump had put forth a nominee to head the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division whose body of work included the following statement: Melanin endows whites with greater mental, physical and spiritual abilities — something which cannot be measured based on Afrocentric standards. Setting aside the scientific idiocy of the statement, it’s hard to see it as anything other than the very definition of racism. And had anything like this ever been put on paper by a Trump nominee, the nomination would’ve been pulled as soon as the outrageous utterance came to light. But swap out the word “whites” for “blacks,” and replace “Afrocentric” with “Eurocentric,” and we’re looking at a verbatim quote from a Joe Biden nominee — to head our nation’s powerful civil rights enforcement apparatus, no less. Granted, Kristen Clarke coauthored these words back in 1994 as part of a letter to the editor of the Harvard Crimson. But she did so as president of the university’s Black Students Association. That’s her name at the bottom of the letter, and those are her words. And they’re repugnant. The letter, in fact, is little more than a semi-coherent screed that thrashes around between racist pseudoscience and pathetic blame-whiteyism. First the pseudoscience: “Some scientists,” they claim without attribution, “have revealed that most whites are unable to produce melanin because their pineal glands are often calcification [sic] or non-functioning. Pineal calcification rates with Africans are five to 15 percent, Asians 15 to 25 percent and Europeans 60 to 80 percent. This is the chemical basis for the cultural differences between Blacks and whites.” Now the blame-whiteyism: “Liberal whites underestimate the damage which racism causes on the minds of Black children, and conservative whites know all too well how to enlarge that damage. No matter how rich or supportive a Black person’s home might be, by the time she is ready to take the SAT or apply to college, she has struggled far more extensively than any white person of the same social and economic background.” As a student, though, Clarke wasn’t content to merely castigate whites generally. She seems to have had a heightened animus toward Jews. Indeed, she once invited a raging anti-Semite to speak at Harvard, a former Wellesley College professor named Tony Martin — a man who authored a manifesto called “The Jewish Onslaught.” When the criticism came down, she vigorously — albeit sophomorically — defended him: “Professor Martin is an intelligent, well-versed Black intellectual who bases his information on indisputable fact.” Got that? He’s an intellectual. Incidentally, if you missed Tucker Carlson’s Monday night takedown of our nation’s would-be civil rights top cop, it’s worth watching: Despite their best efforts, though, it appears that Clarke’s troubling past has caught up with her just in time for a contentious confirmation. As The Washington Free Beacon reports, “Though the incendiary statements are more than 25 years old, several of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees were grilled over comparatively tamer items they wrote as college students, prompting public apologies and even a withdrawal. If confirmed, Clarke would shape federal litigation strategies and lead enforcement of the nation’s civil-rights statutes.” Are her quarter-century-old comments disqualifying, or is there a statute of limitations on black supremacy? Not according to Clarke’s own standards, as Paul Mirengoff points out at Power Line. Hey, what’s good enough for a Trump judicial nominee is good enough for a Biden civil rights nominee. With a racist like Clarke at the helm, the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division would once again count by race, once again weaponize our nation’s civil rights laws, and once again favor certain racial groups at the expense of others. For the sake of decency, let’s hope her nomination gets pulled or, better yet, goes down to bipartisan defeat. Assault On The Capitol Has Let Loose The Electronic Octopus

Earlier last year, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, tweeted out a call to his followers to destroy Israel. Both tweets passed the censorship rules of Twitter’s 20-something judges in San Francisco. In contrast, Trump has been banned for life from Twitter and barred indefinitely from Facebook. Twitter said in a statement it excluded Trump “due to the risk of further incitement of violence.” The president had called for thousands of his followers to assemble at a massive Washington, D.C., rally protesting the results of the election. Splinter groups broke off from the massed protesters. Some stormed into the halls of Congress, Social media platforms canceled Trump after he urged his followers, albeit “peacefully and patriotically,” to go protest at the U.S. Capitol, where the mayhem followed. After the assault — and after Democrats won the presidency, kept the House, took the Senate and threatened to pack the Supreme Court — furor broke out against Trump. The outrage included the banning of Trump and some of his supporters from social media. Thousands of scared social media users then retreated to the more conservative site Parler. But in near-unison, Google, Apple and Amazon removed Parler from their platforms. Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri had his upcoming book — a call to clamp down on Big Tech monopolies — abruptly canceled by publisher Simon & Schuster. Hawley’s crime was apparently his quixotic persistence in questioning the authenticity of the 2020 election. What are the new standards that now get a book or a social media account canceled? After all, the Vicki Osterweil book “In Defense of Looting,” a justification for theft and property destruction, came out last summer amidst the antifa and Black Lives Matter unrest. The author was even featured on National Public Radio in a largely sympathetic interview. Is Madonna banned from social media? Shortly after the 2017 inauguration, she voiced a desire to blow up the White House with the Trump family in it. Is AK-47-toting rapper Raz Simone banned from social media? He took over a swath of downtown Seattle last June and declared it an autonomous zone. For weeks, his armed guards reigned supreme without worry of police. There were at least four shootings and two deaths in or around Simone’s kingdom. He was neither prosecuted nor deplatformed from social media. The lyrics of his song “Shoot at Everyone” are full of allusions to violence, racial slurs and stereotypes. The song is posted on YouTube, and Simone still enjoys a large social media presence. So, why did Big Tech, the media, the publishing industry, a host of corporations and a growing number of campuses double down on censoring some free speech? Why now blacklist, censor and cancel thousands of people? True, Trump gave them an opening when some rogue supporters vandalized the Capitol. But the real reason is that the left has long been eager to curtail the speech of those it opposes. Last week simply offered members of the left the sort of perfect crisis that they determined should never go to waste. With an unpopular Trump on the way out, and with control over the levers of government, members of the left abruptly settled all their old scores. Their aim was not just to humiliate opponents but to curtail opponents’ ability to organize against them. Democrats applauded the censorship. And why not? In a few weeks they will likely seek to end the Senate filibuster. In revolutionary fashion, they may try to admit new states, pack the Supreme Court and end the Electoral College — moves designed to emasculate their conservative opposition. Over a century ago, the oil, railroad, telegraph and power industries created huge monopolies. They set up vertically integrated cartels. And they used their enormous profits to lavish gifts on politicians, control information and destroy competition. Some people likened these huge trusts to octopuses whose tentacles strangled freedom. In reaction, angry workers and farmers, muckraking journalists and novelists, and crusading populist and progressive politicians passed antitrust laws. And so they broke up the monopolies. Today, however, progressive politicians, Wall Street, the media, academia, Hollywood and professional sports are all on the side of the mega-rich tech cartels. Partnering with Big Tech is both politically useful and financially lucrative. So the values of the 19th-century rail and oil monopolies are back. But now they are married to the 20th-century leftist totalitarianism of George Orwell’s “1984.” And they are further powered by the 21st-century instant reach of the internet. This time around there will be no progressive trustbusters or muckrakers. They are in league with, or bought off by, the new electronic octopus. And its tentacles are strangling the thoughts and speech of an increasingly unfree America. Impeachment Is Not Just About Removing President Trump — It’s About Canceling You

The single article of impeachment states the President “willfully made statements that, in context, encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — lawless action at the Capitol.” President Trump did nothing of the sort, but the facts do not matter to the House. At the Save America Rally on Jan. 6, President Trump explicitly urged everyone to “peacefully” protest the Electoral College certification of Joe Biden as President-elect: “We have come to demand that Congress do the right thing and only count the electors who have been lawfully slated, lawfully slated. I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Under no standard of law do those statements constitute incitement of insurrection. They are political speech fully protected under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Unfortunately, President’s Trump call for peaceful protest was not heeded, as some of the crowd breached the perimeter around the Capitol, attacked police officers and then proceeded to storm into the U.S. Capitol, broke down doors, smashed windows and made their way to the floors of the House and Senate, resulting in the deaths of five individuals, including two Capitol Hill Police Officers. To be clear, these rioters do not represent President Trump, his movement or this country. They do not represent me. Such acts of political violence are unacceptable, wrong and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. After the violence began, Trump immediately urged his followers to stop on Twitter, stating: “I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!” Just today, the President issued another statement denouncing violence: “In light of reports of more demonstrations, I urge that there must be NO violence, NO lawbreaking and NO vandalism of any kind. That is not what I stand for, and it is not what America stands for. I call on ALL Americans to help ease tensions and calm tempers. Thank You.” None of that was enough for the House, which conducted no investigation, held no hearings and provided no due process in this proceeding. That is because this snap impeachment is not just about removing President Trump from office with just six days left in his term — it is about canceling you and the 74 million Americans who voted for him. This rush to judgement will not end in the Senate, where a trial is constitutionally prescribed — although, after Jan. 20 any case for removal will be moot — it will go on and on. If you supported President Trump, if you thought the 2020 election was not conducted honestly, either you renounce him, or you could lose your job. Your access to banking. Your social media accounts. Subjected to political violence. It will never end. If the Senate proceeds to another divisive trial, and were to vote to convict, either before or after Jan. 20, then tens of millions of Americans will be disenfranchised. The nation will be divided. And even the Union imperiled. This impeachment undermines the peaceful transfer of power almost as much as storming the Capitol did. As Sen. Lindsey Graham today warned, this impeachment “will do great damage to the institutions of government and could invite further violence at a time the President is calling for calm… The process being used in the House to impeach President Trump is an affront to any concept of due process and will further divide the country. The President, who will be leaving office in less than a week, has committed to an orderly transfer of power, encouraging calm and rejecting violence.” Graham added, warning House and Senate Republicans to oppose this rushed process, “To my Republican colleagues who legitimize this process, you are doing great damage not only to the country, the future of the presidency, but also to the party.” Graham warned that it is the American people themselves are being targeted by this impeachment: “The millions who have supported President Trump and his agenda should not be demonized because of the despicable actions of a seditious mob. The individuals who participated in the storming of the Capitol should be met with the full force of the law. They should and will be held accountable.” Sen. Graham is exactly right. There is a lot more at stake than the removal and disqualification of President Trump. Millions of Americans who supported President Trump think this means they are next. That Congress is declaring them to be enemies of the state. Are they wrong? As House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who was gunned down by a fanatical political opponent at the 2017 Congressional baseball practice, a victim of political violence in our country, said on the floor of the House today: “At this moment we need to be focused on toning down the rhetoric and helping heal this nation as we move towards a peaceful transition of power to President-elect Joe Biden next week… I have seen the dark evil of political violence first-hand and it needs to stop. But all of us need to be unequivocal in calling it out every single time we see it, not just when it comes from the other side of the aisle.” Scalise quoted Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural, when President Lincoln called on the country to come together after the tumultuous Civil War that claimed 620,000 American lives: “With malice toward none with charity for all with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right let us strive on to finish the work we are in to bind up the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan — to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.” America is at a dark crossroads. One path leads into an endless abyss, risks civil war and could destroy the Union and lead to tyranny. The other path is the long and difficult road to rejoining a national dialogue, reestablishing national brotherhood and affirming that we are all Americans working together to heal our republic. Lies, Lies, and more Lies

by PL Booth: The fact is we grow up with lies all around us. Our parents lie to us, about the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, etc. generally without any ill intent. Our school teachers lie to us, about history, their reasons for teaching any particular facts, the environment, mathematics (I am pretty sure NEW MATH is a lie), and many other things. When we do these things, we really aren’t trying to be mean or actually mislead. It’s the normal environment we are raised in and it makes it harder for some to actually learn critical thinking and become able to separate lies from reality. It makes some people more gullible as they just don’t expect those things they’ve grown up to trust to actually be lying to them. Politicians lie. We expect it but sometimes we don’t think critically enough about their claims and statements. Some politicians lie more than others. As Lincoln said, “You can lie (Fool) all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool (lie to) all the people all the time.” Might be a true statement. But there are some politicians that lie all the time and we just accept it. Trump is a liar of note. Lots of his statements were exaggerations of fact and those are lies of a sort. Itty Bitty Joe Biden lies, all the time, and democrats seem to believe most of what he says. In fact, the entire democrat philosophy of socialism is one BIG LIE that they repeat endlessly and lots of people believe that. The supposed desired end of education in our schools is a person who can make good critical decisions and understand the consequences of those decisions. At least that is what most teachers are taught. But all understanding and education depends upon good, honest facts. When we are fed a diet of mis-statements, lies, and incorrect facts, we aren’t able to make good decisions. Critical thinking requires being able to back up decisions with good data, otherwise you are merely stating an opinion which may or may not be right and accurate depending upon one’s experience and foreknowledge of the subject at hand. If all you see and hear are merely opinions not clearly backed up with honest data, one begins to think all opinions are of equal value, a lie in and of itself. Most of the reasoning for education is to train people in how to make those decisions on a regular basis. When textbooks and teachers fail to present real, honest facts and produce only opinions, students lose the ability to understand the subjects at hand and become mislead. Same thing with politics. If all one hears are opinions without facts then whose opinion you accept as correct depends upon what you have learned and experienced previously or whose opinion you are able to FIND facts to support. This is where free speech comes into play. If the only things you can learn are tainted and all the facts are not available then decisions become bad based upon false information. This past presidential election was tainted in many ways because the very engines we used to base decisions upon were directed and tainted by the BIG TECH companies, Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Those companies knew exactly what they were doing and they got the results they wished by directing inquires to where they wanted them to go based on the information they already knew were there because they put it there. Did you get that? Decisions were based upon the opinions of the BIG TECH companies because they directed people to the sites and information they controlled. When these BIG TECH companies were formed, they said they would not be tainting information nor publishing information but would be honest search engines that allowed people to see whatever they wanted and to go where ever they wanted. They lied. Some politicians noted that and spoke out against them. The BIG TECH companies then retaliated by directing inquiries to negative areas concerning those disfavored pols and positive sites for favored pols. Thus they managed to alter the outcome of an election. If allowed they will become the main arbiters of decisions our government makes as well. There are lots of people who have awakened to these facts and are looking for ways to get away from those arbitrary BIG TECH companies. That has led to the formation of alternate companies such as “PARLOR” which just happen to be using the computer servers another BIG TECH company controlled, AMAZON. So they shut down Parlor because it was competing against the interests of BIG TECH. The GOP and Trump wanted to change the laws the govern BIG TECH which would have decreased the influence they have had. BIG TECH does not want to lose influence as that would also cost them monies so they carefully crafted computer engines that would “correct” or dampen “false” information or opinions they did not want the public to have access to and we no longer may find those negative opinions on the popular BIG TECH platforms. Some people think that is dishonest and want to break up BIG TECH or force them to be less discerning and more open to opinions they do not share. That might work. It used to be that newspapers had investigative reporters that would dig into claims and facts then inform the public as to their findings. When the internet came along, it became a lot easier for people to find information across the internet so paper circulation decreased. As TV became ubiquitous and the arbiters of our daily news consumption, the networks began to be the arbiters of opinions as well. Now BIG TECH, TV, and the internet are intermingled with only local TV and local news actually bothering to investigate (and only on local scales) so what we hear and see on TV as well as the internet are merely what BIG TECH wants us to see and hear. That is a lot of control of the information that people use for decisions. We see the results in a President who hardly was ever in public and rarely had to answer hard questions because BIG TECH knew they could control not just him but the decisions being made to elect him regardless of his actual philosophy and background. The public really does not know much of anything about itty bitty Biden, a socialist politician who accomplished damned little in more than 40 years of public life but whose name recognition was high because he’d been the VP of a well known president. He favors BIG TECH and is hiring their mangers for government positions so public decisions will be decided by the arbiters of BIG TECH. Some people are going to say, “SO WHAT. They have the information so they should be able to make good decisions.” In fact, the decisions they will make will favor their sources regardless of the public good and those sources have shown themselves to be selfishly socialistic in many ways. BIG TECH favors Wall Street and themselves in a very fascistic way. They favor open borders so they can have cheap labor at the expense of American Citizens. They are against the growth of wages because that would cost them monies. They are for stringent environmental laws to help shore up their own BIG TECH companies which will devalue the dollar, cause expenses to rise, increase the cost of living, and decrease the quality of life. They are also largely atheists, anti-religion, anti-gun, and think the Constitution should be merely a suggestion rather than the law of the land. Since they have been writing and talking about their plans and philosophy for some time, information about their beliefs and desires is available, if they let you see it. I am ending this before it gets too tedious to read but I’ll continue this train of thought sometime in the near future. Realtor Group Gag

So who cares whether some silly realtor group imposes an anti-“hate speech” code on members? Us. We had better care. Why? Bureaucrats and politicians don’t act alone. They are empowered by individuals who consent to, cheer for, do whatever they can to promote and enable repression. And by all the private organizations and institutions who do the same kind of enabling of repression. The “hate speech” ban just imposed by the National Association of Realtors on its members to govern their conduct 24/7 (a “blacklisting,” says Reason’s Eugene Volokh) could impose fines up to $15,000 for violations. (I assume NAR would be unable to collect from members who don’t stick around to pay.) The goal is to make at least the most submissive members struggle never to say anything that could offend some anti-speech client. If you are a realtor with NAR: quit. Don’t cooperate. Don’t fund and don’t sanction these aspiring tyrants. You can find client leads another way. Join a competing organization that doesn’t ban speech. Or work with other realtors to form one. Governments do not tyrannize in a social and cultural vacuum. Do we want a world in which everyone who values freedom is silent — even “voluntarily” — for fear of “hatefully” offending the infinitely tender sensibilities of those who hate freedom of speech and any fundamental disagreement? Pelosi vs. Pence, Cheney’s Charge, Democrat Divisions, Boxer Busted

by Gary Bauer: Pelosi vs. Pence The vice president responded by telling Pelosi that he “will not yield” to “political games at a time so serious in the life of our Nation.” Pence urged members of Congress “to avoid actions that would further divide and inflame the passions of the moment.” Unfortunately, Pence’s sage advice is going unheeded by the left and, sadly, a handful of RINOs. Today, with just seven days left in Trump’s term, Speaker Pelosi is pushing articles of impeachment against the president. Polling finds that 60% of voters believe this impeachment push is “a waste of time and money,” while 77% said Congress should be working on additional responses to the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, by a 12-point margin (48% to 36%) voters were less likely to support members of Congress who backed impeachment. And among Republican voters, 76% said they were less likely to support a member of Congress who supported Trump’s impeachment. McConnell’s Mess Granted, this was a report from the New York Times. But Sen. McConnell’s office has not forcefully denied it, so it is plausible that people close to McConnell planted the report. Some GOP consultants say it is imperative that the Republican Party reboot from Donald Trump and return to what it was before his presidency. They just don’t get it. More than 70% of Republican voters see Donald Trump’s platform as the model for the future of the party. They do not see the typical GOP politician as the future model. If the Republican establishment reverts to business as usual and goes back to worshipping at the altar of so-called “free trade” that sent our factories and jobs to China, fighting endless wars that we don’t win because we fight by the ACLU’s rules and open borders, pardon the pun, but the party’s over. Exactly who are the voters who these consultants think they can build a movement with? There aren’t enough people in corporate board rooms and country clubs to win elections. The entire #NeverTrump movement was never more than just a few dozen well-funded Beltway consultants and pundits receiving mostly left-wing money. Donald Trump brought ten million new voters to the GOP in the last four years. Who knows how many more he could have won over if Republican quislings had been working with instead of against him. I hope Mitch McConnell understands that the future of the Republican Party is not a return to the neo-con alliance led by someone like Liz Cheney. Cheney’s Charge In a statement announcing her position, Cheney declared, “There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.” Really? So, when Barack Obama and Joe Biden gave their blessing for James Comey to spy on Donald Trump and undermine the new administration based on a hoax, that was not a betrayal of Obama’s oath of office? Cheney has never used rhetoric so harsh about Obama. Let’s be clear about this: Liz Cheney is upset that Trump rejected the neocon foreign policy, a policy that says we will protect borders of foreign countries but not our own; we’ll build schools in Afghanistan, but we won’t rebuild our own schools in our crumbling inner cities. Cheney and others like her are the same people who convinced me and many others that we had to take extraordinary risks with our civil liberties by trusting the professionals at the CIA and other intelligence agencies to monitor the phone conversations of our enemies. But we later learned that those powers were abused to spy on Congress, conservatives and the Trump campaign. Cheney is basically suggesting that everybody who was at last Wednesday’s rally was engaged in a riot. The overwhelmingly majority were engaged in the normal process of protest and petitioning their government. But now they all are being lumped in with the rioters. She is smearing many thousands of good and decent people, and I guarantee you that their sons and daughters are the ones who disproportionately fight the no-win wars that Liz Cheney has been so eager to get us into. It is infuriating that some Republicans are willing to do the Democrats’ dirty work for them because the left won’t stop with Trump. Now there are demandsto expel every Republican who dared to question the election results. Thankfully, some conservatives are pushing back and demanding that Liz Cheney resign from her leadership post. Democrat Divisions
Other House Democrats are privately worried that the left is stoking more division at precisely the worst possible time as Joe Biden is about to be inaugurated under the theme of “America United.” As the Wall Street Journal editorial board noted, “This is a moment for Joe Biden to establish his leadership by calling off the House impeachers in service of his vow that this is a ‘time to heal.'” But I’m not holding my breath. So far, Biden has only thrown gas on the fire. Boxer Busted Former California Senator Barbara Boxer sold out to Beijing recently by becoming a paid lobbyist for a company that makes surveillance technology, which the communist regime has used to oppress Muslim Uighurs. And when Nancy Pelosi chose her leaders for the impeachment of President Trump, she had the audacity to name Rep. Eric Swalwell as an impeachment manager! She’s not only refusing to remove Swalwell from the House Intelligence Committee, but now she’s appointed him as one of the managers of this fake impeachment. It is beyond absurd that House Democrats would appoint a man who was compromised by a communist Chinese spy to lead the effort to remove the president who has fought so hard to remove communist China’s influence from America. Just think about the message that sends to America’s enemies! China’s communist party bosses must be laughing their heads off. Our Faustian Bargain

by Judd Garrett: There was an assault on our Democracy recently, and I’m not talking about the breach of the Capital on January 6, which was put down in a matter of hours, and was not an existential threat to our democracy. The real threat we are witnessing before our eyes is the systematic silencing of a political movement and political thought. The collusion of very powerful forces to shut down people’s voices. Some of the most powerful companies in the world, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, Google, have all colluded with the Democratic Party to silence the opposing party’s voices. President Donald Trump’s accounts have been permanently suspended on these social media sites, along with other prominent conservatives. Conservative social media site Parler has been de-platformed on Amazon servers under the pretext of a failure to moderate and remove certain potentially violent rhetoric on its site. “Stop the Steal” and other references to fraud in the 2020 election is deemed as potentially inciting violence, and has been banned. Yet, people are still allowed to post about the debunked Russian Collusion hoax questioning the results of the 2016 election, and about the charges of election fraud in the 2000 election without fear of banishment. It’s only wrong to charge voter fraud about an election a Democrat won. Social media never cared about vitriolic rhetoric inciting violence prior to January 6, 2021. Black Lives Matter and Antifa, who were the instigators of the 7 months of riots that tore our cities apart in 2020, schemed and planned the riots on these social media sites, yet they still have their accounts intact. Many of the prominent Democratic politicians, such as Kamala Harris and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who defended, supported, and even help fund these riots have yet to be banned on these sites. Known terrorists and murderous dictators around the world still have accounts on social media sites that Donald Trump and other conservatives have been banned on. Violent, pornographic, and even child-pornographic videos, litter the internet, and are easily assessable through a simple Google search and are not blocked by Amazon’s servers. Movies by people like, Quinton Tarantino, which glorifies violence with no redeeming message would never be censored or canceled, and they shouldn’t. Social media sites and internet providers only became interested in banning dangerous or violent speech and content when it can be used as a pretext to silence political views they do not like. This inconsistent application of their policies is consistently applied against conservatives, and consistently not applied to Democrats. This is the codifying of the cancel culture. The cancel culture has always been a political movement, not a cultural one. It was never meant to protect people or reduce violence in our society. It has always been about silencing certain political voices. All this does is drive people into their own separate echo chambers. Millions and millions of conservatives are getting off of Facebook and Twitter and looking for other outlets. The country will just become more and more divided, the more certain people and certain thoughts are canceled or banned. You do not change peoples’ minds or win over their hearts by banning their words or canceling their thoughts. You change their minds and win their hearts with facts and evidence, and reasoning and rational thought. But, far too often, the people who want to ban words and thoughts are not rational or reasonable and are truly afraid of the actual facts and evidence. If the facts and reason are on your side, then you want more discussion and more debate. That would be like going into a game with the Kansas City Chiefs’ offense versus the Detroit Lions’ defense. You would be licking your chops. If you do not want debate, if you want to silence opposing voices, that’s a strong indication that your arguments are weak, and the evidence supporting your arguments is lacking. Free speech and open debate are paramount to the strength of our political discourse. There’s a reason why sports teams play the games. There’s a reason why teams compete. To find out which team is the best. There’s a reason why we need debate; to find out which arguments, which philosophies, which ideologies are the best. Just as you can never find out which is the best team solely by watching them scrimmage against themselves, you can never find out which is the best political or philosophical position to hold unless the sides are tested in rigorous debate. But sadly, we no longer have rigorous debate in our country. How good would a professional athlete be if he never had live game experience? If he was never tested against other opponents? Are we getting smarter, sharper, more open-minded in our echo chambers, or dumber, duller, and more closed-minded? For those who believe that social media companies can do whatever they want because they are private entities, the Supreme Court would rule otherwise. In the 1946 case, Marsh vs Alabama, Justice Hugo Black representing the majority opinion wrote, “the more an owner, for his advantage, opens up his property for use by the public in general, the more do his rights become circumscribed by the statutory and constitutional rights of those who use it… Whether a corporation or a municipality owns or possesses the town, the public in either case has an identical interest in the functioning of the community in such manner that the channels of communication remain free.” Meaning, because these social media sites have become such a large part of the public domain and the companies benefit from that large public domain, the owners cannot hide behind the fifth and fourteenth amendment protections to deny you your first amendment rights on their sites. But these tech companies and the politicians colluding with them truly do not care about our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, or our country. They are only concerned with solidifying their power. What they fail to realize is that our freedom, our Bill of Rights, our Constitution are the well-spring of the wealth and power they are enjoying, and to work against them is to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. We are the wealthiest country in the world, not because of our resources, but because of our free and democratic system of government, our Constitution and Bill of Rights, which they are corrupting and dismantling by the day. The Democrats are using the power and reach of tech companies to sway the political debate and influence the election results to gain and solidify their power, while the tech companies are using the influence of the Democrats, they put into power to expand their wealth and power through legislation, like the section 230 protections that will never be taken away as long as the Democrats are in charge. But this is truly a Faustian bargain between the tech monopolies and the Democratic politicians. Empowering the tech companies like this, risks them becoming so powerful that they will want to dictate to politicians which in turn risks triggering the politicians to use the full force of the government and military to take over these companies as is done in socialist countries. It comes down to who is going to overplay their hand first. Which side wants the power? Which side no longer wants to cater to the other? Insurrectionists always eat their own. They collude until they see the opening to consolidate the power around themselves. Stalin murdered all the Bolshevik revolutionaries to become the supreme leader of the Soviet Union that the revolutionaries created. This is inevitable because they don’t care about freedom or human rights or fairness. Those words are just tools to get what they want. And they want power. The more power the better. And when necessary they will stomp on your freedom, your human rights to get power, as they have shown a propensity to do. Freedom and human rights are never won by the people. They are gained temporarily, earned every day because they are always under attack. The moment you drop your gloves, you will be smacked in the face. The mechanisms used to silence Trump and his supporters today will be used against you tomorrow. You cannot cheer one silencing and decry the other silencing. As proof of this, the country of Uganda shut down all social media in its country on Tuesday after the country’s longtime leader accused Facebook of taking sides in the upcoming Presidential election. Twitter responded by saying, “Access to information and freedom of expression, including public conversation on Twitter, is never more important than during democratic processes, particularly elections.” Twitter’s statement is absolutely right except Twitter does not believe its own statement. Twitter was good with censoring Trump and banning the New York Post and Breitbart News for stories they disagreed with in the lead up to our Presidential election but now condemns Uganda for blocking Twitter and Facebook because they were using their power and reach to unfairly sway Uganda’s Presidential election. Let’s be clear, Twitter’s statement was not about free speech and human rights for average citizens, nor was it about ensuring free and fair elections, it was solely an attempt to maintain their disproportionate power and influence over political processes worldwide. These are dangerous corrupt companies. But we the people have empowered them. We have engaged in our own Faustian Bargain with these companies. We have voted in their power every time we use their platform for our own purposes. We can vote them out by deleting their platforms. Do we really need Twitter, Facebook, and other social media? Do they really make our lives better? They were created in 2005. The world did not start in 2005. I, like many of us, lived a full and happy life prior to 2005, prior to Twitter and Facebook, probably even happier. They are unnecessary, or to use a more up to date term, non-essential. When you delete them, you will find your anxiety level will decrease dramatically and your happiness level will increase equally. This Is How Conservatives Get Erased From the Internet

by Daniel Greenfield: Two companies, Google and Apple, each control about half of the smartphone market. So when the two companies made a move against Parler, the conservative social media alternative, it effectively erased its app from existence. Joining the party was a third member of the FAANG Big Tech consortium, Amazon, which deplatformed Parler from Amazon Web Services.AWS controls a third of the cloud marketplace. Microsoft and Google are in 2nd and 3rd place.Blocking an app doesn’t permanently kill a social networking service, though it places it at a structural disadvantage, but Apple and Google can flag sites as unsafe through their browsers.Google’s Chrome commands 45% of the browser market in America while Apple’s Safari has a little under 40%. While browser flags can be currently bypassed, it would add a further structural disadvantage that would make people less likely to use the service, and there’s nothing stopping Apple and Google from permanently blocking access to any conservative site. There are other browsers, but Google and Apple could kick any browser off their app stores that doesn’t comply with a blocklist of ‘unsafe’ sites, further narrowing the potential browser options. With desktops and laptops, Microsoft and Apple can block access to sites at the operating system level by using their built-in antivirus software. That can also be turned off. For now. Google controls over 80% of search traffic. Facebook controls some 80% of social media. Being delisted and deplatformed by them can be all but fatal to any site trying to attract new users. Some conservatives take refuge in the illusion of alternatives from smaller companies, but in the oligarchy, smaller companies usually directly or indirectly rely on services from Big Tech. DuckDuckGo, for example, serves up searches from Microsoft’s Bing. Many smaller alternative companies are likewise dependent on Big Tech players. The small companies conservatives take refuge in are still reliant on the infrastructure of the big players and can be easily pressured into joining their boycotts or have their own services cut off by the Big Tech oligarchy. There are workarounds for all of these, but when visiting a conservative site turns into the equivalent of going to a speakeasy, that eliminates much of the potential user base. Sites can also be crushed at the domain level, banishing them to the dark web. If conservatives distributing information becomes as onerous as Chinese political dissidents bypassing the Great Firewall, what will be left of the conservative movement online? It will take more manufactured emergencies to unlock some of these options, but there should be little doubt that they will be. The Democrats and their media allies invented the threat of “disinformation” out of thin air and still can’t properly explain what it means. But they successfully used it to engage in a massive online purge of their political opponents. A violent clash or a random shooting by an unstable man will unlock another censorship tier. But it could just as easily be another conservative politician winning when he’s supposed to lose. Direct deplatforming is only the crudest tool. Pressure campaigns have targeted advertising and payment options for conservative sites. Google, again, controls 37% of the digital ad market. Payment options at the top are controlled by the same old team of players. That’s what happened when the David Horowitz Freedom Center was cut off by Visa and Mastercard. The ‘killer app’ though won’t be direct internet censorship, but corporate cancel culture. Instead of Facebook deleting your post, you will be fired from your job for posting it. If you own a small business, larger suppliers and companies will no longer work with you. If you belong to a trade association, you’ll be ousted. If your business requires a license, you will lose it. This isn’t a paranoid fantasy. It’s happening right now. In November, I wrote about how the National Association of Realtors had modified its regulations to allow members to be forced out of the business over their social media posts. “Doesn’t this mean that if I post my opinion online and someone doesn’t agree with it, that I can lose my membership and be forced out of the business?” the NAR FAQ asks. That’s not an isolated policy. Similar moves are underway in various trade associations which would treat politically incorrect views as a violation of professional obligations. Cancel culture isn’t a new phenomenon, but this is the industrialization of cancel culture which takes it from an isolated phenomenon to a collective system of enforcement like China’s social credit score. This includes monitoring social media profiles and flagging employees, renters, or businesses with conservative views as a potential risk. Yelp has already implemented a similar program for some eateries. It’s not alone. Big Tech censorship is a symptom of a much bigger problem which is the criminalization of conservative views within the corporate world. The FAANG bloc has led the way, but big business has been slowly tilting leftward. The giant multinationals are the worst offenders, at least when it comes to public virtue signaling, and they control a great deal of the economy. Conservatives never asked companies to adopt their political views. Leftists made it mandatory and organized pressure campaigns from the outside and the inside to make it happen. That’s why they won. It’s why conservatives are losing. Leftists took over academia and cultural industries by organizing networks inside and then imposing their own leadership and institutional ideologies that made their views mandatory and left no room for dissent, while conservatives failed to organize a common front against them.. Naming major conservative musicians and movie stars was easy. Now name one. Under 40. The same takeover is happening at a slower pace inside the corporate world, backed by diversity quotas and social responsibility statements. I wrote about this at length in my Freedom Center pamphlet, >Thought Control, Inc, and internet censorship is a symptom of that threat. The whole threat will erase conservatives from the internet and from public life. Can conservatives influence, campaign, and win elections under these conditions? The endgame here is eliminating conservatives as a meaningful political force in America. That’s the scale of the threat. Conservatives have spent too long ignoring it. And even now they underestimate the sheer scale of the strategy to erase them from the marketplace of ideas. But Big Tech isn’t as powerful as it seems. It’s vulnerable and it’s worried. That’s why Big Tech waited until it was confident that the Senate would be in the hands of the Democrats before it made its big move against Trump. That’s weakness, not strength. Forcing out President Trump was a priority for Big Tech, not only for political, but economic reasons. The Trump administration was the first to aggressively go after Google and Facebook on antitrust grounds. It’s no coincidence that Google is a Biden Inaugural Committee donor. President Trump was the first GOP president to stop being a cheap corporate date. Republicans, even some in the MAGA class, are happy to trade favorable legislation for contributions with economic interests, from Big Tech to the media, that hate conservatives. Democrats trade legislation for contributions, but they also demand political allegiance. When corporations hire Democrat operatives, they get lobbyists for their business interests who still push leftist political agendas, but when corporations hire Republicans, all they get is lobbyists who ignore the fact that the interests they represent are bad for conservatives. The Left understood that corporate policy is national policy. Its members adopted conservative boycotts of companies behaving immorally just when conservatives decided to abandon them. Leftists chose brands based on their politics, while conservatives had no idea what the politics of their cable company or breakfast cereal were. That’s why corporate politics turned leftist. Democrat elected officials help companies who share their views and hurt those who don’t. Republicans help companies who give them money even while they’re crushing conservatives. And if that doesn’t change, there will be fewer Republicans and a lot fewer conservatives. The only way it’s going to change is if conservatives stop paying attention to what their elected officials are saying and start paying attention to what they’re doing on behalf of lobbyists. The battle for the corporation, unlike academia and the media, isn’t a lost cause. But it actually needs to be fought. And one of the best tools for that fight is duplicating the Left’s infrastructure for monitoring the interactions between politicians and corporate interests, and demanding that the politicians represent conservatives, not just their campaign war chests, with corporations. Conservatives view the corporate landscape as an amorphous free market while leftists see friendly and unfriendly companies. After generations of this, the market has become a lot more leftist and a lot less free. Conservatives need a better response to this crisis than to roll out the old claims about their commitment to a free system which failed in academia and the media. Instead, conservatives may need to start viewing corporations in the same way, using political power to pressure companies into adopting conservative positions, funding conservative priorities, and protecting the civil rights of conservatives, while crippling the business interests of companies that serve as the major funders of leftist agendas and deny conservative civil rights. Imagine if Republican legislators actually used government contracts, copyright law, and regulatory oversight to extract meaningful cultural concessions, instead of just campaign contributions, from AT&T, Disney, and Facebook: just to name a few examples. If you want to imagine a country where conservatives aren’t just fighting a rear-guard action against an ascendant radical movement that is taking over everything, that’s the place to start. This may strike some free market fundamentalists as anathema, but a better word is survival. There is nothing free about a market controlled by a Big Tech oligarchy, a handful of multinationals and giant chains, and corporate fronts for Chinese business interests. The only way to ‘free’ the market is to make it more open by demolishing the oligarchy. Facebook and Twitter censorship may be what conservatives see immediately, but the big picture is the erasure of conservatism as a movement from America. It didn’t have to happen. It still doesn’t. Conservatives have lost their grip on many key institutions, but they still have a foothold on political power. The question is whether they’re willing to use it before they lose that too. Do Masks Work? What the Data Shows

by Rachel del Guidice: Do masks really work? Can they help contain the spread of COVID-19? Why does some data show that mask mandates in the U.S. and other countries did not prevent surges in COVID-19 cases? Doug Badger, a visiting fellow in domestic policy studies at The Heritage Foundation, and Norbert Michel, director of Heritage’s Center for Data Analysis, join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss these questions and more. Rachel del Guidice: I’m joined today by Doug Badger, he’s a visiting fellow in domestic policy studies at The Heritage Foundation, and Norbert Michel, director of The Heritage Foundation Center for Data Analysis. Doug and Norbert, thanks so much for coming on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” Norbert Michel: Thanks for having us. Del Guidice: Well, it’s great to have you both with us. You both authored a Heritage Foundation report called “Mask Mandates: Do They Work? Are There Better Ways to Control COVID-19 Outbreaks?” So, Doug, can you just start off by telling us what the report is about? Doug Badger: Sure. It was actually a collaboration between Norbert and me. Norbert was looking at counties that either had mask mandates themselves or there were state mask mandates that covered that county, or both. So you looked at the U.S., I was looking at Italy, by comparison, a country that had a national mask mandate. And the question we asked was, did these mandates prevent the big run-up in cases that occurred in the fall and that we’re really still in here in early January of 2021? I saw in Italy, we presented data to show that it really didn’t work. Norbert looked more specifically at US counties. And the question was, what happened in those counties, Norbert, that had mask mandates in place? Michel: And what we saw was much like what we saw in Italy, which was that virtually all of those counties already had mask mandates in place. When you look at where are all the cases, you find that all of those counties had mask mandates, basically. Out of the top 100, the counties with the 100 most, largest amount of cases, 97 of them had a mandate in place. When you look at the top 25, all 25 had a mandate in place. And most of those were in place before October. Only about 10 that weren’t in place before October. So whether a mask works to help slow the transmission is one thing. But whether these mask mandates have worked is another thing. The mandates themselves clearly didn’t prevent the surge. The data just clearly supports that. Del Guidice: Well, on that note, in the piece, you all point out that while mask-wearing can help reduce transmission of COVID-19, data shows that mask mandates in the U.S. and other countries did not prevent a surge of cases. So, Doug, can you talk more about why this is the case? Badger: Sure. I think there are two reasons for that. First—and I want to be really clear about this, we are in the paper, but I want to make sure we’re not misunderstood—we are not saying that you shouldn’t wear a mask or that that mask-wearing does no good. And there is a good deal of evidence out there that both the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], the World Health Organization, and other bodies have found that say that if you have COVID and you don’t know it, a mask makes it less likely that you will spread the disease to other people. So there’s certainly an argument to be made that these have some value in suppressing infection. The problem is that what we know is that even with mask-wearing and social distancing and other precautions we take to prevent infections, that a lot of people get infected anyway. It’s not that masks don’t work, it’s that they’re not perfect and they don’t suppress the infection. And where we fail in our public health policy has been in what we do once people get infected. We need to do a better job of identifying people with the infection, separating them from people who aren’t yet infected, and also trying to identify people that they may have infected. That’s where the policy has fallen down. It’s not that mask-wearing is a bad thing. It’s just that it’s really insufficient, as Norbert points out. The numbers are irrefutable in terms of the run-up in cases that occurred despite mask mandates and relatively widespread mask-wearing. Del Guidice: Well, Doug, you had mentioned that you were looking specifically at Italy and their mandate. Can you tell us a little bit more about how that country fared, even though they had a national mask mandate? Badger: Yeah. And unfortunately for them, and now we’re talking about a mask mandate in Italy, it’s a thousand-euro fine if you’re outside your house without a mask. It’s enforced by the military police and the local authorities. So they’re very deadly serious about the mask mandate. And what happened is that as much as we read about the pandemic in the early days in Italy, going back to March and April, the run-up in cases that they had in October and November and into December was far in excess of what they had back in March and April, when, obviously, there were no mask mandates in place. So again, it was an earnest effort by the government, along with other things, partial lockdowns and so forth, that they deployed throughout the fall and early winter. And unfortunately, it just simply did not curb the increase in infections there. Del Guidice: Norbert, you also unpack how the Centers for Disease Control believe that masks have a source value. What is source control and how does this work? Michel: When you look at the question of do masks themselves help stop the spread, or does a face covering help reduce the spread or the speed of the disease, which it spreads, you have to ask a few different questions. And one of those is source control. So, does it control the disease at the source? And specifically, in other words, if we’re talking about does it have source control, we’re saying, does it block release of the respiratory particles that someone exhales? So the source of where those respiratory particles are coming from, that is source control. So the CDC for a long time now has said that they think that there is at least some evidence to suggest that masks do have some source control. They do stop people, say, if you’re going to sneeze, or if you’re yelling and sort of—I hate to use the word spitting—spraying those particles out into the environment, the mask can help sort of stop that. It can reduce the speed with which things get out and reduce, I would imagine, the total amount of those things that can get out. So in that sense, it can help protect people who are not yet infected from becoming infected. And that’s the source control part. Badger: Yeah. Norbert did a very good job of describing the source control. That means if I have it and don’t know it, I’m protecting you against me because I’m carrying the disease. The second is protection. And that is to say, if I don’t have it and I wear a mask, will the mask protect me from getting it from somebody else? So now I’m no longer the carrier, I’m the person who is not infected. Now, CDC in November changed its guideline and said, “Yeah, masks do have a protection value.” Unfortunately, there’s only been one controlled experiment of that. It was conducted in Denmark with 6,000 participants. And it concluded quite the opposite, that it’s not going to keep me from getting it if I’m not infected. It doesn’t have a protective value. But if I have it, it will reduce the chances that I will infect somebody else. That’s the source control value. Del Guidice: We talked about how during the surge in the fall, 97 of the 100 counties with the most confirmed cases had either a county-level mask mandate, a state-level mask mandate, or both. And I just wanted to hear from you both, is it possible that without mask mandates in those 97 counties, there could have been even more COVID cases than there were? Michel: Statistically, that’s something that we can’t prove. So, I mean, the honest answer is yes. But what we do know is that the largest surge in cases that we’ve seen now in that period around Thanksgiving through December, larger than even the previous surges, really, did take place in places where there were mask mandates. So could it have been worse? Yes. But, I mean, it was really bad. So all we can do is look at what the data definitely tells us. And the date data definitely tells us that those surges were worse than they were in some of the same places after the mandates were in place than they were before. And the total number was much worse than what we had seen in the past, even though we had the mandates. Badger: And just to emphasize again, we’re very clear in the paper, we’re not saying don’t wear masks— Michel: Right. Badger: … they don’t do any good. We think they do. But the problem is that public health policy has almost become obsessed with masks. And what we do know about them is precisely what Norbert pointed out, that whatever value they have, they didn’t prevent the biggest run-up of cases that we’ve seen since the beginning of the pandemic. And that’s not just true of the United States, that’s also true of throughout Europe, certainly. We cite Italy as an example, but Italy is only one example. Universally, mask-wearing for whatever value it had, and we encourage people to wear masks, our policy needs to go further than that in order to suppress the pandemic. Michel: That was great. And if I could just tail off of one point that Doug mentioned there. In terms of the public policy part of this, it’s clear both with lockdowns and mask mandates, not just in the U.S., that relying on those two things, locking everything down and implementing a mandate, it’s clear that those two things have not prevented these surges. You can get into the details over whether they do any good or not, but that’s almost irrelevant. I mean, you can look at L.A. County, Los Angeles area versus Florida. Los Angeles has some of the most severe restrictions in the U.S., Florida does not. It’s worse in Los Angeles than it is in Florida. But even aside from that, if you just look at what works and what doesn’t work, we can pretty definitively say now that this strategy that relies just on lockdowns and mask mandates has not prevented these surges. Del Guidice: On that note, Doug, what does your data mean for personal behavior? Should we wear a mask when it’s not mandated, like when we’re around friends or family indoors? And what about wearing a mask outdoors? Badger: Yeah, I don’t want to go into issues [like] that. I think I would listen to your local public health officials. I would talk to your doctor if you have a question about that. Mask-wearing, again, definitely has value. But where you should wear them and whether it’s appropriate to do so indoors and, frankly, in some cases, your doctor may say that if you have certain gatherings with people, you should avoid them entirely and not rely on masks to protect you. What I’d really like to focus on is when we talk about the fact that we haven’t implemented policies that do work, I’d like to talk just for a couple of minutes, if it’s OK, about what those policies might look like. Del Guidice: Yeah. Go for it. I would love to hear. That was one of my follow-up questions. But yeah, feel free to bring that up now. Badger: Yeah. I mean, as I said, what we focused on is saying, “Let’s take steps like mask-wearing and distancing and so forth to prevent the spread of the infection.” And what we know now, I think, or should know by now, is that we can slow the rate perhaps at which the infection spreads, but the infection continues to spread. And unfortunately, it is spread at an unacceptably high rate. So what’s the other side of the coin? If you know that people are going to get infected anyway, you need a strategy to say, “Well, what do we do once people get infected? Since we can’t stop those infections, we can only slow them, what do we do when that happens?” And again, the most important thing we can do is a better job of identifying people that have the infections. And that’s where we get into the issue of testing. Right now, we’re testing somewhere between a million and a half and 2 million people a day. And when I say that, what I mean is we get test results back as to whether they’re positive or negative, and that’s how we understand how many daily new cases we have of confirmed COVID. Now, those test results were performed on people who were tested two, three, four, sometimes more days before. So we’re not getting a lot of data. A million and a half and 2 million a day in a nation of 330 million people is really not much. And we’re not getting timely data on those folks. And so one of the things that we’ve talked about, and Heritage did a symposium with Dr. Paul Romer, a Nobel-winning economist, Michael Mina, an epidemiologist from Harvard, and I also participated in that, in which we talk about rapid self-testing. These are tests that cost about a dollar to produce. They’re very simple tests involving either a swab or a bit of saliva. You do it yourself, you do it at home. You get the results in 15 minutes. And unfortunately, the [Food and Drug Administration] has not approved these for public use. We believe very strongly—and Norbert and I argued for this in the paper—that the FDA should allow these tests to be made available to people so that we can find out our COVID status, not in two or three or four days after it comes back from a laboratory, but we can find out within 15 to 30 minutes in our homes and take appropriate steps once we know what our infection status is. Del Guidice: Well, Doug and Norbert, what is the best way as we go forward to protect the most vulnerable, such as those in nursing homes, the elderly, as well as those with preexisting conditions? Michel: Well, I think the rapid testing is part of that, has to be part of that strategy. I mean, at the core, what this means is that we’re empowering people and giving them the information that they need to protect themselves, as opposed to preventing them from having that. If you look at nursing homes, what happens? Well, you have a congregate setting where a bunch of people are living and you have a staff that comes in and out. Well, obviously, even if you cordon off the residents, unless you keep the staff away from them, that’s a source of bringing the virus in. So what do you do? Well, you rapidly test people. I mean, the staff coming in and out, right? But without having the approval of the tests and having enough of those tests produced, which isn’t going to come without the approval, you can’t do that. And you prevent some people from having the information that they need. You have a staff member who could test themselves before they leave their home, and if they test positive, they could stay home. I mean, that’s a commonsense part of how we need to combat this stuff. Del Guidice: Well, lastly, Doug, something that is suggested in your paper is establishing voluntary isolation facilities, saying that they should be strictly voluntary. And I wanted to hear from you as how you think this should be gone about, making it strictly voluntary, especially in today’s day and age, where there’ve been so many mandates that have come down during this time. Badger: Yeah. It’s very important, the voluntary nature of these things. When you think about what happens, we all kind of walk around with our masks and distancing and so forth, hoping that we don’t get infected or infect somebody else. But then once we find out that somebody is infected, we tell them to go lock themselves in their house with their family members for 10 days or 14 days, whatever that is. And so what happens is one of the principle ways COVID is transmitted is in the home. So you want to give people a safe alternative. And I would at least say, with respect to people who have a vulnerable person in their home, an older relative, someone who might have a respiratory illness or something, if I get that, give me an alternative to locking myself in the house with that person and trying not to infect him or her. So it should be voluntary. And it should be something where if you agree to stay until you’re cleared of the infection, I think the government ought to compensate you for doing that. We’re mailing out checks to people indiscriminately. If we’re going to direct resources appropriately, we want to direct them at people who are infected. Because here’s the thing, we go to great lengths through mask-wearing and so forth to prevent the infections from occurring. But then somebody gets it, that person, you want to make that infection a dead end. You want to make sure that person doesn’t infect others. We know what happens when you send that person home. Typically, the other people in the household get infected. Let’s create some alternatives to allow that person to recover from the infection without putting other people at risk. Freedom Shouldn’t Be Partisan

There is no sugarcoating the consequences of November’s election for America’s gun owners: For the last four years, we have had a president who stood with us, and, as of January, we will likely (still unconfirmed as this was being written) have a president who is committed to advancing every bad gun-control bill that has been proposed over the last three decades. But, thanks to the genius of our political system, all is not lost. The president of the United States is not a dictator; he is just one important part of a larger machine. On election day, the American people complicated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ control of that machine. Almost to a man, the pundits predicted a “blue wave.” That wave failed to materialize. The importance of this—particularly of the Republicans’ successes in the U.S. Senate—cannot be overstated. It is of the utmost importance that the Republicans win both of the Senate runoffs in Georgia, and, in so doing, slam the brakes on the Biden presidency before it has begun. You won’t hear this said much in the media during the next four years, but “count every vote” applies to the U.S. Senate, too. Prior to election day, many in the Democrat Party had begun to flirt with some genuinely terrifying ideas: Blowing up the U.S. Supreme Court, abolishing the U.S. Senate’s filibuster rule and adding states for the sole purpose of consolidating their power and inoculating themselves against a backlash. Thanks in part to the hard work of Second Amendment advocates, all of those notions have been stalled—until the 2022 midterms, at least. Promisingly, a few days after the press called the race for Biden, Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a Democrat, showed that he understood the electorate when he confirmed that he was not interested in helping his party stage a power grab. And that, if he is true to his word, could be that. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Republican, has proven to be a wily majority leader—indeed, McConnell is one of the main reasons that the U.S. Supreme Court now appears to be split 6-3 in the favor of those who believe that the words of the Second Amendment have clear and tangible meanings—but he will once again be on the defensive: against Joe Biden, against Kamala Harris, against Nancy Pelosi, against the media, against the universities and against Silicon Valley. McConnell’s task will be simple: To hold the line against unconstitutional encroachments and nascent radicalism, while waiting for backup to arrive after the midterms. In this endeavor, McConnell will have more help in the U.S. House of Representatives than he expected. Still, defenders of the right to keep and bear arms should not kid themselves: This was not a victory. But the slim margins that the Democrats will enjoy in the House—margins that shocked the prognosticators—will undoubtedly limit the party’s ambitions, especially among members who live in moderate and suburban districts and who are looking ahead to 2022 with dread. It will be the task of every American who wants to preserve the Second Amendment to impress upon wavering members of the House that if they side with the Biden-Harris administration against the U.S. Constitution, they will be voted out of office. In an ideal world, every politician in the United States would respect their oath of office. In an ideal world, the citizenry would not have to remain permanently vigilant in defense of their basic liberties. But we do not live in that ideal world, and we must work with the tools that we have. For now, those tools may be enough—if, and only if, we are prepared fight with them. ACLU Attacks Trump’s Free Speech
Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST by Bill Donohue: Over the weekend, on January 9th, the ACLU’s board of directors met to discuss the impeachment of President Trump. On January 10th, it unanimously decided he must be impeached. It is one thing for politicians, pundits and newspapers to call for the impeachment of the president, quite another when an organization that claims to be the preeminent free speech institution in the nation agrees. Among its complaints against Trump, the ACLU cites “false statements” he has made. This is ironic given the false statements the Union itself makes in its impeachment resolution. It opens by saying the board of directors touts its “commitment to nonpartisanship.” This is manifestly false. As I documented in two books published by Transaction Press, “The Politics of the ACLU” and “Twilight of Liberty: The Legacy of the ACLU,” the Union has always been the legal arm of the liberal-left; it was never non-partisan. Moreover, it was never—from its founding in 1920—a consistent free speech advocate. Indeed, a few years after it was founded it threatened a libel suit against a magazine when it published an article that merely criticized its alleged non-partisan record! The resolution also says that Trump “urg[ed] an unruly mob to riot.” Similarly, the House impeachment resolution accuses the president of “inciting violence against the Government of the United States.” Neither the ACLU resolution nor the one proferred by the House offers any proof of Trump’s alleged incitement to riot. In both cases, they simply assert he has done so. Yet as I pointed out yesterday, and as constitutional scholars Alan Dershowitz and Jonathan Turley have said, it is flatly wrong to accuse the president of inciting a riot. He did no such thing. His speech may have been offensive, but it clearly fell within the parameters of protected speech. Referring to Trump’s speech on January 6th, Dershowitz said on TV, “as much as I disapprove of it and many people disapprove of it on its merits, is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. It comes within core political speech. And to impeach a president for having exercised his First Amendment rights would be dangerous to the Constitution. It would lie around like a loaded weapon ready to be used by either party against the other party.” “Like many,” Turley wrote, “I condemned that speech as it was still being given, calling it reckless and wrong. I also opposed challenges to electoral votes in Congress. However, Trump’s speech does not meet the definition of incitement under the U.S. criminal code. Indeed, it would be considered protected speech by the Supreme Court.” This is rich. The same ACLU that accuses Trump of making “false statements” is now falsely accusing him of fomenting a riot. “As a matter of organizational policy, the ACLU does not regularly call for the removal of public officials.” That is what its impeachment resolution says. This is true. It is also true that it only does so when the public official is a Republican. The ACLU previously called for Trump to be impeached in 2019. In the 1970s, it called for the impeachment of President Richard Nixon following the Watergate revelations. The founder of the ACLU, Roger Baldwin (the current ACLU claims that he was only one of ten who founded the organization—another false statement), labeled that decision “hysterical.” “It’s not in keeping with the Union’s way of behaving, which is to go to the courts.” Baldwin touched on something very important. So did some board members at the time. They argued that it was wrong for the ACLU to claim that Nixon was guilty. After all, an impeachment proceeding is not a trial. This alone should convince a principled civil liberties organization not to call for impeachment. But the ACLU is not driven by principle; it is driven by politics. Astonishingly, the ACLU even voted to deny Nixon the right to claim his First Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. As I wrote in “The Politics of the ACLU,” this was “the first and only time in its history that the Union went on record advocating the suspension of civil liberties guarantees for any individual.” We are living in one of the most dangerous times in American history, making the McCarthy era look positively innocent. This time those calling for sanctions against those whose views they abhor comprise a Who’s Who of the Left. Adding to this spectacle, we now have the ACLU making accusations of guilt absent the kinds of civil liberties protections traditionally afforded the accused. Exploiting the Capitol Riot to Kill Trump

Answer: A conviction would strip Republicans of the right to reelect the man who got the largest number of votes in their party’s history. Donald Trump has stumbled and fallen, and the establishment is not going to let slip this last opportunity to stomp him and his movement to death. On Sunday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued a startling ultimatum: Either Vice President Mike Pence and the Trump Cabinet invoke the 25th Amendment, declare the president “unfit” for office, and remove him within 24 hours, or House Democrats will vote to impeach him again. As the Senate, which would have to hear the case and hold the trial, does not meet again until Jan. 19, the day before Joe Biden is inaugurated, what is going on here? It sounds absurd, like rushing to hang a man who is going to die the next day. But such is the blind hatred of Pelosi’s House for Donald Trump. Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina suggests holding off sending a bill of impeachment to the Senate for 100 days, to give Biden a chance to get his appointees confirmed, and then indict and convict Trump of sedition when he is a private citizen. What would be the purpose of impeaching a president who hasn’t been president for three months? Answer: A conviction would strip Republicans of the right to reelect the man who got the largest number of votes in their party’s history. House Democrats want veto power over whom Republicans can nominate. And this is the crowd that does not cease to bray about its devotion to “democracy.” What are the specific grounds for impeaching Trump? In the first draft of the resolution of impeachment, apparently, the crime is “incitement to insurrection.” Yet, in his Wednesday speech on the mall, Trump declared, “We’re going to cheer on brave senators and congressmen and -women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them.” Trump added, “Everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” Nowhere in Trump’s remarks was there a call to violence or to invade the Capitol building, or to engage in the mob criminality that took place under the Capitol dome Wednesday afternoon. But the effort to disgrace and drive Trump from an office he will vacate in 10 days is only a part of the general purge that is underway against conservatives, Republicans and Trumpists. Twitter and Facebook — the social media megaphones Trump has used to communicate with some 80 million followers — have terminated the president’s personal accounts. Apple, Amazon and Google have cut ties to the social media website Parler, which is popular among conservatives. The goal of Big Tech is censorship — to circumscribe Trump’s capacity to communicate with his followers, and then to cripple the capacity of the right to communicate with one another. And this is being applauded by individuals who see themselves as acolytes of the First Amendment. Now calls are coming from home-state newspapers and colleagues for Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz to resign from the Senate. And for what? During Mike Pence’s reading of the count during a joint session on Jan. 6, Cruz and Hawley called for debate on the electoral vote counts of Arizona and Pennsylvania. What Hawley and Cruz did was not only permissible under the statute, it was also supported by more than 100 GOP members of the House. Now, Cumulus Media, which has more than 400 radio stations and employs some of the most popular conservative talk-radio hosts in the nation, has warned its on-air personalities to stop suggesting the election of 2020 was stolen from Trump — or face termination. Said Brian Philips, vice president of content at Cumulus, in an internal memo: We “will not tolerate any suggestion that the election has not ended. The election has been resolved and there are no alternate acceptable ‘paths.’” “If you transgress this policy,” says Philips, “you can expect to separate from the company immediately.” Major corporations have begun to instruct their Political Action Committees to halt contributions to Republican legislators who support Trump. And some of Trump’s Cabinet officers and White House staff have bailed out on him. “Count your friends when you’re down,” Richard Nixon said. On Jan. 21, Democrats will control the Senate, the House and the White House. Big Tech, Big Business, Big Media will all be on board. They will be led, however, by a president and vice president who are in their offices not because of the great campaign they conducted and the brilliant case they made — but because Americans voted in the most massive turnout in history, 74 million for Trump and 81 million against Trump. As for the GOP, it should follow in these difficult days the counsel of LBJ when things were going bad: “Just hunker down like a mule in a hailstorm. And let the wild wind blow. And the sun will come out again in the morning.” In two years, the pendulum will swing back to the right, for it now has nowhere else to go. Good morning, NBC News readers.
In a bold move the day after President Donald Trump was impeached, President-elect Joe Biden laid out his plan to deal with America’s other major crisis: the coronavirus pandemic.
Here’s what we’re watching this Friday morning.
Biden lays out massive Covid relief plan with $1,400 stimulus checks President-elect Joe Biden revealed his $1.9 trillion relief package in a prime-time address Thursday — focusing on a new round of stimulus checks to help struggling Americans and an ambitious vaccine distribution plan to control the pandemic.
Biden will ask the new Democratic-controlled Congress to approve the “American Rescue Plan” which includes a third round of stimulus checks at $1,400 in direct payments per person.
A chunk of the funds —$416 billion— would help launch a national vaccination program with a goal of vaccinating 100 million Americans and reopening schools in the first 100 days of his administration.
The proposal comes after Trump administration officials finally began sharing critical Covid vaccine data with Biden’s transition team.
The Trump administration has been heavily criticized for its distribution strategy for vaccines. As of Thursday morning, out of more than 30 million vaccine doses distributed nationwide, just over 11 million doses have been administered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Biden called Trump’s vaccine rollout “a dismal failure thus far” and admitted that it will be a huge logistical challenge to vaccinate millions more. But he vowed, “we will move heaven and earth to get more people vaccinated.”
Meantime, antibody treatments could help ease the record number of Covid hospitalizations. Public health officials are wondering why they are sitting on shelves going unused.
“This is the first time during the pandemic that I can recall when our resources far exceed demand,” Dr. William Fales, medical director for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said Thursday.

If you’re Liz Cheney, Mitch McConnell or Mitt Romney, here is your challenge as impeachment moves to a Senate trial: The GOP is still Trump’s party.
At least for now.

According to brand-new numbers from our NBC News poll, only 8 percent of Republican voters support Trump’s impeachment and removal from office.
That’s compared with 50 percent of all voters who say this, including 89 percent of Democrats and 45 percent of independents.
What also stands out: These percentages – overall and by party – are virtually identical to the impeachment/removal numbers for Trump during the Ukraine scandal.
It’s largely the story of the Trump Era: The numbers and partisan divide rarely change, even after an attack at the Capitol.
And just check out the opening paragraphs from this New York Times story.
“In Cleveland County, Okla., the chairman of the local Republican Party openly wondered ‘why violence is unacceptable,’ just hours before a mob stormed the U.S. Capitol last week. ‘What the crap do you think the American revolution was?’ he posted on Facebook. ‘A game of friggin pattycake?’”

“And this week in Virginia, Amanda Chase, a two-term Republican state senator running for governor, maintained that President Trump might still be sworn into a second term on Jan. 20 and that Republicans who blocked that ‘alternative plan’ would be punished by the president’s supporters.”

Back to the virus
Since Jan. 6 – the day of last week’s attack at the Capitol – this country has seen more than 2 million new coronavirus cases and more than 28,000 deaths from the virus.
Think about that again: In a little more than a week, 2 million new cases (!!!) and 28,000-plus deaths.
It’s that context – and presidential void – to view President-elect Joe Biden’s primetime address where he rolled out his $1.9 coronavirus relief package (more on that below).
The outgoing president has been MIA when it comes the coronavirus. So the incoming president has decided to take on the issue head-on before his inauguration.
And today, Biden delivers remarks on administering COVID vaccines to the U.S. population.

Here’s what’s in Biden’s $1.9 trillion relief plan
President-elect Joe Biden on Thursday called for a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package on Thursday, per NBC’s Marianna Sotomayor.
The “American Rescue Plan” includes investments in a national vaccination program, additional direct payments and an increased federal minimum wage of $15 per hour.
“We are in a race against time. We need these resources to vaccinate the vast majority of Americans and to put safety measures in place that will help us put COVID behind us, so that we can reopen our schools, businesses, and once again be able to get there with our friends and family,” one senior transition official said on a briefing call with reporters.
Here’s some of what the plan asks for:
- Containing COVID-19 and reopening schools by mounting a national vaccination program – Total: $416B. (That amount includes $20 billion for a national vaccination program and $170 billion to for schools)
- Helping working families struggling from suffering economy – Total: $1 trillion. (That amount includes $1,400 per person direct payments and $400/week unemployment insurance programs for hard hit Americans)
- Assisting small businesses, including minority business owners. (That includes $350 billion in emergency funding for state, local and territorial governments to pay frontline workers, as well as $15 billion in grants to help hardest-hit small businesses)

NEED TO KNOWJanuary 20Inauguration Day will be a muted event in Washington, DC, as reports suggest the US National Park Service is considering fully closing the National Mall for the Jan. 20 ceremony. The 300-acre area between the US Capitol building and the Lincoln Memorial has seen up to 1.8 million visitors for past events—a record set at former President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration. The potential decision follows last week’s storming of the Capitol and comes amid reported threats of violence in the city over the next week. The National Guard’s presence in the nation’s capital increased to more than 26,000 members, in addition to local law enforcement. State capitols are also preparing, with many planning to simply close, after the FBI warned of potential armed protests in every state on or around Wednesday. President Trump—whose Senate trial on an article of impeachment may begin on Inauguration Day—released a video statement earlier this week denouncing threats of violence. Finally, a new report identified at least 21 highly trained former members of the US military or law enforcement at or near the breach of the US Capitol building last week. More than 170 people have been arrested—including at least one left-wing activist—on charges stemming from the Jan. 6 siege; see a list of key cases here. More Charges in Flint Two former Michigan public health officials were charged yesterday with involuntary manslaughter for their role in the Flint water crisis that began in 2014. Prosecutors allege inadequate levels of chlorine led to 12 deaths from Legionnaires’ disease, caused by waterborne bacteria. Former Gov. Rick Snyder separately pleaded not guilty to two counts of negligence for his role in the overall crisis. The crisis began in 2014 when state officials switched the city’s water source from Lake Huron (treated in Detroit) to the Flint River (treated in Flint) in a cost-cutting measure. Officials, however, failed to add anticorrosion chemicals to the new treatment, causing lead and other contaminants to leach from aging pipes into the water supply. Young people are particularly susceptible to lead, a known toxin, which can cause irreversible damage to brain development. A study found a 58% increase in fetal deaths in the majority-Black city following the water switch. See a timeline of the crisis here. Bobi WineUgandans went to the polls yesterday, casting ballots in a highly anticipated election that pitted, among other candidates, the country’s most popular singer against a strongman president seeking his sixth term. The 38-year-old challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi—known by his stage name, Bobi Wine—has positioned himself as a champion of the poor, campaigning for access to healthcare, clean water, and education. The incumbent, 76-year-old Yoweri Museveni, has led Uganda since an armed uprising in 1986. The Museveni government has been accused of cracking down on political opposition in the run-up to the election. Security forces have reportedly harassed Wine for months under the guise of violating COVID-19 restrictions. His arrest in November sparked a riot in which 37 people were killed and more than 500 injured. As of Wednesday, government officials had shut down the country’s internet, citing security concerns.
