Good morning! Here is your news briefing for Thursday December 31, 2020
1.) THE DAILY SIGNAL
December 31 2020
|
Happy New Year’s Eve from Washington, where the House and Senate will hear lawmakers’ objections next week to some electoral votes being cast for Joe Biden rather than Donald Trump. Our Fred Lucas reports on what’s happening and the historical context. Speaking of Congress, how awful is that new spending package? Matthew Dickerson lays it out. Plus: Virginia grants “driver privilege” to illegal immigrants; D.C. has it in for fitness studios; school choice makes gains; and some other good stuff that 2020 brought. Thanks for supporting The Daily Signal during a tough year. Stay safe, and we’ll see you on New Year’s Day.

🥂 Happy Thursday, and happy New Year’s Eve. Thanks for doing 2020 together.
- Wishing serenity to you and yours as we plunge into the promise of ’21.
- Today’s Smart Brevity™ count: 1,180 words … 4½ minutes.
Situational awareness: President Trump is cutting short his Florida holiday and returning to Washington today, a day early — meaning he’ll miss all those awkward “congratulations” at tonight’s big Mar-a-Lago party.
- ⚡ “The U.S. military is bracing for a possible attack on American personnel and interests in Iraq, … days before the first anniversary of an American drone strike that killed an Iranian general in Baghdad,” the WashPost reports.
More than six in 10 Americans are hopeful about 2021, managing editor David Nather writes from a new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll.
- 76% were more hopeful than fearful about the pandemic next year — a view that held across most age groups, racial and ethnic groups, and parties.
- 82% of Democrats, 72% of Republicans and 73% of independents said they were more hopeful than fearful about the coronavirus.
63% of respondents to the poll (Dec. 14-20; 3,561 U.S. adults) said they’re more hopeful than fearful about what 2021 holds in store for the world, while 36% said they’re more fearful.
- That’s a jump in optimism compared to the same poll heading into 2019, when just 51% said they were hopeful and 48% said they were fearful.
- The only group that wasn’t optimistic about 2021 was Republicans: 41% said they were more hopeful, while 58% said they were more fearful.
Between the lines: Americans were even more optimistic about the year ahead for them personally — mostly driven by the hopes of young adults, people of color and Democrats.

To set the tone for his inauguration the next day, President-elect Biden will lead a memorial to remember and honor lives lost to COVID-19, with church-bell ringings and light shows across the country on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 5:30 p.m. ET.
- The Presidential Inauguration Committee is announcing this morning that a D.C. ceremony, led by Biden, will feature lights around the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool — the first time lighting around the Reflecting Pool has memorialized American lives lost.
- “PIC is inviting cities and towns around the country to join Washington, D.C., in illuminating buildings and ringing church bells at 5:30 p.m. ET [15 minutes after sunset] in a national moment of unity and remembrance,” the committee says.
PIC communications director Pili Tobar said in a statement: “The inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris represents the beginning of a new national journey.”
- “However, in the midst of a pandemic — when so many Americans are grieving the loss of family, friends, and neighbors — it is important that we honor those who have died, reflect on what has been one of the more challenging periods in the nation’s history, and renew our commitment to coming together to end the pandemic and rebuild our nation.”
The gap in trust between Democrats and Republicans in mass media reached an all-time high during the Trump administration, Axios Media Trends author Sara Fischer writes from a Gallup annual poll.
- Why it matters: The divide represents one of the most profound elements of President Trump’s legacy.
Over the past four years, Democrats’ trust in mass media has grown to a near-record high, while Republicans’ has sunk to an all-time low.
- Just 10% of Republicans polled this year said they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. By comparison, nearly 30% and 36% of Republicans answered the same on average during eight years of the Obama and Bush administrations, respectively.
- By the end of 2020, there was a 63-point gap between the two parties — the biggest divide since Gallup started conducting the poll in the late 1970s.
Above, journalists attend yesterday’s unveiling of Penn Station’s Moynihan Train Hall — a new “front door” and waiting room for Amtrak and Long Island Rail Road.
- The hall, which opens tomorrow, is across from New York Penn Station — the busiest train station in the Western Hemisphere — on 8th Avenue, in the historic James A. Farley Post Office Building.
- The two buildings will act as one complex — adding light to the dingy, underground Penn Station.

Seniors and first responders wait in line yesterday to get a COVID vaccine at a site in Fort Myers, Fla., with 800 doses. Photo: Octavio Jones/Getty Images
In the U.S., officials are reserving the second vaccine dose that every patient will need. But Britain and some Canadian provinces are giving as many single shots as possible, rather than holding back half the supply.
- Why it matters: Countries are debating how to rapidly deploy the vaccine in the most effective way possible.
The U.K. announced yesterday that it would shift its vaccination strategy “to give as many people in at-risk groups their first dose, rather than providing the required two doses in as short a time as possible.”
- “Everyone will still receive their second dose … within 12 weeks of their first,” the U.K. government said. “The second dose completes the course and is important for longer term protection.”
But Pfizer said in a statement that “no data” demonstrates that a single dose of its coronavirus vaccine will provide protection from infection after 21 days.
- Pfizer said that although some protection appears to begin as early as 12 days after the first dose, two doses of the vaccine — separated by three weeks — is the only regimen that proved to be 95% effective in Phase 3 trials.
The Trump administration is declassifying as-yet uncorroborated intelligence, recently briefed to President Trump, that indicates China offered to pay non-state actors in Afghanistan to attack American soldiers, Jonathan Swan and Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian scoop.
Why it matters: The disclosure comes months after news reports indicated that the Russians had secretly offered bounties for Taliban militants to kill U.S. troops — unconfirmed intelligence that Trump called “fake news” in a July interview with Swan.
- If the intelligence about China were to be confirmed, it would represent a dramatic strategic shift and sharply escalate tensions between Beijing and the U.S.
- If the intelligence does not prove accurate, it raises questions about the motivations of the sources behind it as well as the decision to declassify it.
Between the lines: China has long played a quiet diplomatic role in Afghanistan, inviting Taliban officials to Beijing to discuss plans for a peace deal.
- It seems “incongruous” that China would take such a provocative action in Afghanistan, Andrew Small, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund who specializes in China-Afghanistan affairs, told Axios.
The New York Times’ “2020 In Photos: A Year Like No Other.”
Every year, I look forward to AP’s Top 10 stories of the year, a poll of news executives that started with newspaper editors in the olden days. This year, there was no poll or Top 10, because there was only one story. As AP put it:
The AP will not move a story of the year this year because of the unusual nature of the past year: 2020 itself is the story of the year. Instead, we will have separate packages on the coronavirus pandemic, racial injustice, President Donald Trump and other topics that dominated this year’s headlines.
Speaking of the olden days, “The World Almanac” — first published by the New York World newspaper in 1868 — took a crack at a list:
- New Coronavirus Causes Worldwide Pandemic.
- COVID-19 Has Devastating Impact on U.S.
- Biden Presidential Election Winner.
- George Floyd’s Death Sparks Black Lives Matter Protests.
- Pres. Trump Acquitted of Impeachment Charges.
- Supreme Court Appointment Cements Conservative Majority.
- Continuing Conflict, Moves Toward Peace Occur in Middle East, SW Asia [Iran, Afghanistan, Abraham Accords].
- Climate Change Affects U.S. Wildfires and Hurricanes.
- Off-Field Events Dominate Sports.
- Britain Achieves Brexit.

POLITICO Playbook: Good riddance, 2020
Presented by Facebook
EDITORS’ NOTE: After 1,634 morning editions, plus another thousand or so Playbook PMs and dozens of live events, never mind all the tweets, we say thank you and goodbye today to Playbook co-authors JAKE SHERMAN and ANNA PALMER. Jake and Anna are POLITICO stalwarts, logging more than two decades combined here — and over four years on Playbook — and helping make the publication the force it is on the Hill, in Washington and across the country. We wish them the best in their next professional chapter.
TORCH PASSING: We’ll inaugurate a new Playbook team on Jan. 19, a day before another inauguration in town. Stay tuned for more details in the new year. One thing that’ll never change — to seek to provide the Playbook community with scoops, insights and hopefully a bit of fun every day, without fear or favor.
IN THE MEANTIME, A TREAT: For the next three weeks, we’ll turn over the so-called unofficial guide to official Washington to special guest hosts from across the media and cultural landscape as well from our own stable. Some names we’ll keep a surprise. Others are out there: See The Hollywood Reporter on who’s in for sure (Kara Swisher, Don Lemon, Eliana Johnson, Chuck Todd and Yamiche Alcindor, among others). Mediaite has more details. Tomorrow, POLITICO co-founder John Harris will take the wheel to guide you through the first day, and months, of 2021.
FROM US NOW: HAPPY THURSDAY, and Happy New Year’s Eve. This is our last Playbook. We want to thank everyone at POLITICO for a great decade-plus — including four terrific years at the helm of Playbook. We’re very grateful to ROBERT ALLBRITTON, POLITICO’s owner and our friend, for the opportunity and support. And, of course, to the editorial leadership, which keeps this big impressive news organization humming every day. Happy New Year.
DRIVING THE DAY
AMEN … N.Y. POST COVER: “NEW YEAR’S HEAVE: Good riddance to terrible 2020”
— POST-COVID DREAMING … WSJ A-HED: “Post-Vaccine Vacation Dreamers Plot to ‘Get the Hell Out of Their House’: Coronavirus cabin fever is inspiring some big-trip plans for 2021; ‘a little hopefulness’”:
BREAKING OVERNIGHT … STAR TRIBUNE: “Minneapolis police shoot, kill man during traffic stop,” by Libor Jany and Alex Chhith: “Minneapolis police shot and killed a man they say fired first during a traffic stop on the city’s south side Wednesday night. Hours afterward, Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said he will release body camera footage of the shooting Thursday.
“It was the first police killing in Minneapolis since the May 25 death of George Floyd at the hands of four since-fired police officers. Floyd’s death spurred protests and rioting that spread nationwide and prompted an intense, often bitter debate about the future of the Minneapolis Police Department.
“After Wednesday night’s shooting, a crowd of about 100 protesters congregated near the scene and at times grew tense, shouting expletives and throwing snowballs at police. Later in the evening, protesters remained relatively peaceful as they gathered at a bonfire built in the street.”
INCOMING FROM PBI … CNN’S KAITLAN COLLINS and KEVIN LIPTAK: “Trump to return to Washington early ahead of Republican plan to disrupt certification of Biden’s win”: “President Donald Trump is expected to return to Washington earlier than anticipated ahead of a planned disruption by Republicans when Congress meets next week to certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win.
“Trump is now slated to leave Palm Beach before his annual New Year’s Eve party, even though guests had already gathered at his south Florida club and were told Trump would be in attendance, according to three people familiar with the matter. The President typically relishes appearing on the red carpet in front of the press and his friends, but is skipping the event altogether this year in what will be an unusual move.
“In the President’s daily public schedule for Thursday, the White House stated the President and first lady Melania Trump will leave Florida at 11 a.m. ET to return to the White House. … He has been in an irritated mood during most of the trip and fumed about everything from the election outcome to first lady Melania Trump’s renovations to his private quarters, according to multiple people who spoke with him.
“At one point, Trump also said he was concerned Iran could retaliate in the coming days for the US drone strike that killed Iran’s top general, Qasem Soleimani, one year ago. A person speculated that could be a contributing factor in his early departure. Trump was at Mar-a-Lago when he ordered the Soleimani strike on January 3, 2020.”
TO THAT POINT … NYT’S ERIC SCHMITT: “Pentagon Sends More B-52s to Middle East to Deter Iranian Attacks on U.S. Troops”: “Two American B-52 bombers flew another show-of-force mission in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday, a week after President Trump warned Iran that he would hold it accountable ‘if one American is killed’ in rocket attacks in Iraq that the administration and military officials blamed on Tehran.
“The warplanes’ 36-hour round-trip mission from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota was the third time in six weeks that Air Force bombers had conducted long-range flights about 60 miles off the Iranian coast, moves that military officials said were intended to deter Iran from attacking American troops in the region.”
WSJ EDITORIAL BOARD: “Trump’s Embarrassing Electoral College Hustle”
MCCONNELL TO TRUMP: NO CHECKS, THANKS FOR PLAYING … BURGESS EVERETT: “Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans finished off any imminent chance of approving $2,000 stimulus checks on Wednesday, ending a push from President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders to approve bigger direct payments as the congressional term comes to an end.
“The Senate majority leader said he would not detach the $2,000 checks supported by President Donald Trump from other matters demanded by the president: Stripping legal protections from tech companies and establishing an election fraud commission. He declared that the House’s effort to more than triple the size of $600 checks approved earlier this week has ‘no realistic path to quickly pass the Senate.’
“‘Under the circumstances, I think that’s likely true,’ said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) when asked if the checks issue is done until the next Congress convenes on Jan. 3. ‘Democrats are not willing to consider any other pieces of any other provisions in the bill, whether it’s Section 230 or whether it’s liability relief provision.’
“But Democrats indicated they would not abandon their efforts. Andrew Bates, a spokesman for President-elect Joe Biden, said he supports the House bill and said ‘it’s imperative that we build on the bipartisan stimulus down payment.’ Moreover, the issue has become central to the battle for the Senate. Democrats will continue to press the issue as two Republican senators, David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, try to eke out run-off races that will determine Senate control next year. After Trump’s new demand, both said this week they support $2,000 payments.” POLITICO
— “Josh Hawley led the GOP push for stimulus checks. Where else will he take his party?” by WaPo’s Mike DeBonis
CHANGING OF THE GUARD … WAPO’S CAROL LEONNIG: “Secret Service to make changes to presidential detail to bring on agents who worked with Biden”: “The Secret Service is making some staff changes in the presidential detail that will guard President-elect Joe Biden, amid concerns from Biden allies that some current members were politically aligned with President Trump, according to two people familiar with the changes.
“As Biden readies his new administration, the Secret Service plans to bring back to the White House detail a handful of senior agents whom Biden knows well from their work more than four years ago guarding him and his family when he was vice president.
“Staff changes are typical with the arrival of a new president and are designed to increase the trust and comfort the incoming president feels with his protective agents, who often stand by the president’s side during sensitive discussions and private moments.”
THE CORONAVIRUS CONTINUES TO RAGE … 19.7 MILLION Americans have tested positive for the coronavirus … 342,395 Americans have died.
— “Leaders in Washington region pledge to increase speed of coronavirus vaccine rollout,” by WaPo’s Meagan Flynn, Rachel Chason and Rebecca Tan
— “California has nation’s 2nd confirmed case of virus variant,” by AP’s Colleen Slevin and Carla K. Johnson: “California on Wednesday announced the nation’s second confirmed case of the new and apparently more contagious variant of the coronavirus, offering a strong indication that the infection is spreading more widely in the United States.
“Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the infection found in Southern California during an online conversation with Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. ‘I don’t think Californians should think that this is odd. It’s to be expected,’ Fauci said. Newsom did not provide any details about the person who was infected.”
— “AstraZeneca and Oxford’s Bumpy Partnership Hangs Over Covid Vaccine’s Future,” by WSJ’s Jenny Strasburg in London
KNOWING ELIZABETH WARREN … “Elizabeth Warren’s next chapter,” by Burgess Everett: “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer replaced, lamenting that there’s no one ready to step in. Elizabeth Warren has a different approach. The Massachusetts Democrat is a member of Schumer’s leadership team and is working closely with the Senate minority leader on a policy priority that could fuel the first intra-party fight with President-elect Joe Biden.
“A few months before the election, Warren asked Schumer to join her effort to cancel $50,000 of student loan debt for millions of Americans. The president can do it without Congress, she argues. The New York Democrat, who is up for reelection in 2022, was ‘immediately interested.’ ‘Chuck Schumer has a hard job. And he has to confront the fact every single day that Mitch McConnell controls what gets a vote on the floor of the Senate,’ Warren said in an interview. Student loan cancellation is an ‘example of Chuck’s good partnership on things we’d like to get done. And using every tool available to us to make it happen.’
“Recruiting Schumer on student loans shows how Warren will use her sway in Democrats’ impending internal debates as a centrist Biden confronts a narrowly divided Congress. Unlike some liberals, Warren also plays the inside game to shape policy — and picks her spots carefully. Along with a seat at Schumer’s leadership table, Warren now has a presidential run under her belt plus a progressive record that includes hard-fought battles both with her own party and the GOP.
“She even secured language in a critical defense bill to rename bases honoring Confederate soldiers over President Donald Trump’s opposition; his veto is on the verge of being overridden for the first time of his presidency. It’s not Medicare for All or the Green New Deal, but she says it exemplifies what Democrats can accomplish during divided government: ‘It’s the right side of history.’”
REPUBLICANS PRESSURE DEMS ON PELOSI VOTE … DAN CONSTON, the president of the Congressional Leadership Fund, the House GOP super PAC: @danconston: “Appears Nancy Pelosi needs to pull all sorts of tricks to remain Speaker. We view any weak-kneed Democrats voting present or *conveniently* skipping the vote as a move to enable Pelosi and the left’s radical agenda — we’ll be sure voters know exactly what they did @spmaloney”

FOR YOUR RADAR — “Census Bureau to miss deadline, jeopardizing Trump plan,” by AP’s Mike Schneider: “The Census Bureau will miss a year-end deadline for handing in numbers used for divvying up congressional seats, a delay that could undermine President Donald Trump’s efforts to exclude people in the country illegally from the count if the figures aren’t submitted before President-elect Joe Biden takes office.
“The Census Bureau plans to deliver a population count of each state in early 2021, as close to the missed deadline as possible, the statistical agency said in a statement late Wednesday. ‘As issues that could affect the accuracy of the data are detected, they are corrected,’ the statement said. ‘The schedule for reporting this data is not static. Projected dates are fluid.’
“It will be the first time that the Dec. 31 target date is missed since the deadline was implemented more than four decades ago by Congress. Internal documents obtained earlier this month by the House Committee on Oversight and Reform show that Census Bureau officials don’t expect the apportionment numbers to be ready until days after Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20.” AP
DAN DIAMOND: “How Trump warped HHS long before Covid-19”: “Two-and-a-half years before Covid-19 would bring the issue of political interference with the Health and Human Services Department to a head, the flap surrounding the disbanding of the Science and Medicine team showed the extent to which tensions within the department were undermining its mission and sowing distrust between longtime staff members and Trump appointees. The result was that when America’s health agencies confronted the ultimate challenge — the worst global pandemic in a century — they had already been battered by internal divisions, feuds and suspicions.
“POLITICO spoke to 29 current and former career civil servants about their time serving in the health department, as well as political appointees, outside advisers and others with knowledge of Trump administration operations. They painted a picture of a national health bureaucracy riven with tension even before the advent of Covid-19. Many officials said the seeds of the disasters of 2020 were planted in 2017 — from ‘the End of Science’ episode to a dozen other incidents — as Trump appointees sidelined, ignored or pushed out career health officials in favor of policies demanded by the White House, a dynamic that would repeat itself throughout the pandemic.”
ACROSS THE POND — RYAN HEATH: “Britain braces for not-so-special relationship with Biden”: “Boris Johnson has a problem named Joe Biden. Although the U.K. has now sealed a trade deal with the European Union, covering $900 billion in tariff-free goods and services annually, the British prime minister’s hopes for a new arrangement with the United States are confronting the reality of a transatlantic relationship that is now anything but special.
“Johnson allies fear his courtship of Donald Trump is now a liability in a Democratic Washington, along with his advocacy for a break with the EU against the advice of Trump’s predecessor. And while Biden’s tight-lipped transition team won’t reveal its plans for the U.K., interviews with 16 officials and former officials on both sides of the Atlantic make clear that Brexit has changed the dynamic.
“‘When you wanted to get something done with Europe, you made the first or perhaps second call to London,’ said Charles Kupchan, who served as a senior National Security Council European affairs official in both the Obama and Clinton administrations. In 2021, ‘you’re still going to call London, but that call will be lower down in the queue. Britain doesn’t have a seat at the table anymore,’ thanks to Brexit, he said.”
MEDIAWATCH — “Alden Global Seeks to Buy Tribune Publishing,” by WSJ’s Cara Lombardo, Dana Cimilluca and Lukas Alpert: “A hedge fund that owns a big stake in Tribune Publishing Co. is seeking to buy the newspaper chain behind titles including the Chicago Tribune and New York Daily News, according to people familiar with the matter.
“Alden Global Capital LLC, which is already Tribune’s largest shareholder with a 32% stake, could disclose an offer for the company as soon as Thursday, the people said. Details of the potential bid couldn’t be learned. Tribune has a market value of roughly $470 million after a yearslong slide as the prospects for local newspapers dim. Its shares are little changed this year and closed Wednesday at $12.79.”

The Morning Briefing: Alec Baldwin’s Phony Wife Is An SNL Skit Waiting to Happen
Hilaria Baldwin Is A Joke, ¿Me Entiendes?
Happy New Year’s Eve, my dear, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. I’ll try not to embarrass anyone.
Bye, bye, Miss American Pie, we made it! The end of this hot mess has finally reached its calendar point of demise. Yeah, there’s going to be a lingering stench, but we can at least begin distancing ourselves from the Year That Shall Not Be Named.
This has all been a smidge surreal, hasn’t it? It’s difficult to pick out the weirdest part of the last ten months. The election certainly ranks near the top. We’re supposed to believe that fourteen hundred kajillionty quadrillion people voted for a man who can’t navigate three consecutive sentences without veering off on a tangent about shaving aardvarks. Yeah…no.
Over here in the comedy trade, Joe Biden is a target rich joke environment the likes of which hasn’t been seen in the modern era. Sadly, mainstream comedy has been castrated by political correctness and pledged fealty to the Democratic party. Unless I can get back on stage soon, you’re not going to be hearing any jokes about Joe Biden. I don’t even do political comedy on stage, but I’d break my own rules just to have a go at this guy.
Maybe after January 20th we’ll launch a segment here at the Briefing called “The Daily Bidengaffer” or something. Always looking for new ways to have fun.
Speaking of jokes that write themselves, have we all been keeping up with the Hilaria Baldwin story? Alec Baldwin’s wife has been caught slipping in and out of an accent that she shouldn’t have.
Megan wrote about it several days ago, here’s the intro to refresh your memories:
Hilaria Baldwin is married to Alec Baldwin, the mouthy star who does a terrible impression of Donald Trump for Saturday Night Live. Hilaria, or Hillary Hayward Thomas as she was known growing up in Boston, is on the receiving end of internet sleuths who seem to be out to cancel her for faking a Spanish accent and lying about where she was born.
Little Miss Whitebread Massachusetts has been caught red-handed playing “English as a second language” in various television appearances, once going so far as to act as if she couldn’t quickly remember the English word for “cucumber.”
Hilaria has been getting dragged hard on social media for livin’ la vida loca, but most in the MSM have left her alone. If we play the “What If a Conservative Had Done This?” game we face plant right into a wall of double standards.
Señora Baldwin is none too happy with the fact that the internet exists and that it outed her as an utter fraud. Remember kids: cultural appropriation is A-OK if you just register as a Democrat.
Let’s get to today’s headline now. It was inspired by a tweet I happened upon yesterday afternoon:
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE A WINNER.
This story is ripe for repeated lampooning. SNL could redeem itself in the eyes of many (“Present”) by doing a good Hilaria Baldwin skit or two. As the tweet mentions though, Hilaria’s esposo is the show’s go-to for mocking President Trump, which will probably preclude them from making fun of his missus.
Should they find the temerity to do a “¿Cómo se dice?” cucumber sketch, it would be hilarious (almost pun intended) if they could talk Alec into participating. He may be a total tool, but he’s a great comedic actor. Of course, since she’s doubling down on the validity of her shape-shifting accent he’d probably opt for keeping the peace at home.
Be safe if you happen to be going out tonight my friends. I’m off to marinate some pepinos for a salad I’m making later.

The Morning Dispatch: Hawley Makes His Move
Plus: It’s taking longer than expected to administer the COVID vaccines. Here’s why.
The Dispatch Staff | 13 min ago | 1 |
Happy Thursday! As 2020 comes to a close, we can’t express in words how grateful we are for your support of The Morning Dispatch this year. We had no idea all the news we were up against when we launched daily publishing last January, but the community here has grown more than we could have ever imagined.
Cheers to 2020. We hope there’s never another year like it.
Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories
- Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri announced Wednesday that he will object when Congress convenes on January 6 to certify the Electoral College results. The move will force lawmakers in both chambers to debate and vote on accepting Joe Biden’s victory, a vote Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had hoped to avoid.
- President Trump was briefed on unconfirmed intelligence on December 17 that China paid bounties to non-state militants in Afghanistan to kill U.S. soldiers, two senior Trump administration officials told Axios. The declassified intelligence comes six months after media outlets reported that Russians paid off Taliban insurgents to kill American troops. “Administration officials across multiple agencies are currently working to corroborate the initial intelligence reports,” Axios’ Jonathan Swan and Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian write.
- According to police reports, the girlfriend of the Nashville Christmas Day bomber warned local authorities in 2019 that he was making bombs in his R.V., saying he “frequently talks about the military and bomb making.”
- The Chinese government on Wednesday sentenced 10 Hong Kong activists to between seven months and three years in jail for an illegal border crossing, drawing ire from the international community. The activists will also face steep fines ranging from 10,000 to 2o,000 yuan.
- The European Union finalized its Comprehensive Agreement on Investment with China, completing negotiations on a deal that has been in the works for seven years ahead of its December 31 deadline. Per the treaty’s provisions, China will end its forced transfer of intellectual property from foreign businesses and will allow European firms to operate more freely in China.
- The United Kingdom granted emergency authorization to the Oxford University-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, becoming the first country to do so. Operation Warp Speed chief Moncef Slaoui said yesterday Americans likely will not receive the AstraZeneca vaccine until April because of questions about its efficacy among older people.
- The Louisville Police Department is moving to fire detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes, two police officers involved in the raid that led to Breonna Taylor’s death on March 13.
- President-elect Joe Biden on Wednesday tapped Jessica Hertz—his deputy counsel while he was vice president and a former lawyer for Facebook—to serve as his staff secretary in the White House. He also named former Obama administration Pentagon official Kathleen Hicks to serve as deputy secretary of defense.
- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Wednesday that she intends to “provisionally” seat Iowa Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks to the House of Representatives on January 3, upending Miller-Meeks’ Democratic challenger Rita Hart’s attempts to contest the election results, which came down to six votes. “Every vote counts and that’s why the Committee on House Administration is conducting a thorough and fair review of this election to make sure every vote was counted and counted as cast,” a Pelosi spokesperson added.
- The United States confirmed 188,482 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 12 percent of the 1,569,605 tests coming back positive. A total of 3,715 deaths were attributed to the virus, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 342,259. According to the COVID Tracking Project, 125,220 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control: 12,409,050 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed nationwide, and 2,794,588 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered.
Josh Hawley Volunteers as Tribute
Earlier this month, the Electoral College officially convened across the nation to elect Joe Biden the next U.S. president, 306 to 232. But one procedural step still stands between Biden and inauguration day: The congressional count of the electoral votes on January 6. It’s looking more and more like that’s going to be a long day.
Yesterday, Josh Hawley, the freshman lawmaker from Missouri, became the first Republican senator to publicly commit to challenging the electoral results during the counting session. Alleging that “some states, particularly Pennsylvania, failed to follow their own state election laws” and disparaging “the unprecedented effort of mega corporations, including Facebook and Twitter, to interfere in this election,” Hawley pledged to contest the results.
Such a challenge requires participation from at least one member of both houses of Congress. A handful of House members have already promised to challenge the outcome. In this way, Hawley’s support as a senator differs from actions by Democratic lawmakers in 2016, which were lodged by members of the House of Representatives only. In 2004, though, former California Sen. Barbara Boxer joined House Democrats in objecting to the counting of Ohio’s 20 electoral votes. Procedurally, Congress will be obligated to allow a period of debate and take at least one roll call vote—and perhaps several—on whether a given state’s electoral slates ought to be rejected.
Where Are All the Vaccines?
It’s been a little longer than two weeks since the first batches of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine began rolling out nationwide, and 10 days since Moderna’s did the same. According to CDC data, a combined 12,409,050 doses of these two vaccines—which were both developed and authorized by the FDA in less than a year—have been distributed across the country, and 2,794,588 of those doses have been administered.
In a vacuum, inoculating nearly 3 million people against a deadly virus less than a year after it was sequenced is nothing short of a miracle. It’s a miracle outside of a vacuum, too. But given that the average daily death toll in the U.S. has numbered nearly 2,500 this month, some are saying it’s not good enough.
For a piece on the site today, Declan talked to several physicians and public health experts about why the U.S. appears to be failing to meet its end-of-year vaccination goals. Check out the full article. We’ve included some highlights below.
If 12.5 million vaccine doses have truly been distributed around the country, why have fewer than 3 million people received one?
First of all, reporting delays across the country make the gulf seem wider than it is. Gen. Gustave Perna, the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed, told reporters yesterday that he is seeing a 72- to 96-hour lag in the CDC’s dashboard. “That data will tighten up as systems and reporting become more regular and routine,” he said.
This is not the first time the CDC’s data processes have been under the microscope. “Federal coordination about data collection has been horrible,” Dr. Howard Forman—a health policy professor at Yale University and clinician at Yale New Haven Hospital—told The Dispatch. “It’s why there is a COVID Tracking Project run out of The Atlantic magazine, because the federal government never wanted to take on the responsibility or even work directly with groups to try to quickly collect this type of information.”
What are some obstacles doctors and nurses are facing in getting more Americans vaccinated?
“The holiday season has certainly slowed down the rollout,” said Dr. Akino Yamashita, who is treating COVID patients in New York. “The hospital I work at is providing vaccines to staff, but only on weekdays. There was also a snowstorm in the Northeast that slowed some shipments and forced some places to close early the day of the storm, or open later the day after.”
The Pfizer vaccine’s extreme temperature requirements may also be contributing to the relatively lethargic uptake, Yamashita noted. “Once you defrost them, you can keep the vaccine in the fridge for five days,” she explained. “Once you take it out of the fridge and prep it, you have six hours to give it. If not, you have to throw it out. I think some centers might be limiting vaccination hours because they don’t want to wind up with wasted vaccines if people don’t show up.”
The sheer novelty of the vaccine presents another administration bottleneck, as CDC guidelines recommend doctors and nurses keep recipients on the premises for 15 or 30 minutes post-vaccination, depending on their medical histories, to monitor for any side effects or allergic reactions. STAT Newsreported earlier this week there have been 11 U.S. cases of post-COVID vaccine anaphylaxis—which can be treated with an EpiPen—out of about 2.1 million doses administered. As pediatrician Aaron Carroll wrote this week, the COVID-19 anaphylaxis rate thus far is slightly higher than the overall rate of anaphylaxis in vaccinations, “but that may be only because we are being much more careful about monitoring reactions at the moment.”
Forman, who had vaccinated about 45 people yesterday by the time The Dispatch caught up with him in the afternoon, said his health system hasn’t seen any severe reactions after administering “well over” 10,000 inoculations. But in a pandemic, the extra 15- to 30-minute wait time is particularly disruptive. “People are filling up our room, socially distancing, after the vaccination,” he said. “Which means that even if you wanted to schedule twice as many [vaccine appointments], where would you hold them?”
Worth Your Time
- To ring in 2021, bestselling author Mark Manson reached out to his readers and asked, “What have been your biggest lessons from 2020?” More than 1,200 people responded, and as it turns out, people learn a lot in times of adversity. Manson condensed his readers’ thoughts and experiences into 10 practical takeaways ranging from the importance of routine to the adaptability of humankind. “I’ve learned that I’m much stronger than I thought,” one response read. “I have been able to maintain love and happiness, through a pandemic, political insanity, cancer, job changes, and whatever the world is becoming.”
- Sen. Ben Sasse made waves last night when he posted an essay on Facebook in response to the news that his colleague, Sen. Josh Hawley, will object to the Electoral College results on January 6. “When we talk in private, I haven’t heard a single Congressional Republican allege that the election results were fraudulent – not one. Instead, I hear them talk about their worries about how they will ‘look’ to President Trump’s most ardent supporters,” Sasse writes. “Let’s be clear what is happening here: We have a bunch of ambitious politicians who think there’s a quick way to tap into the president’s populist base without doing any real, long-term damage. But they’re wrong – and this issue is bigger than anyone’s personal ambitions. Adults don’t point a loaded gun at the heart of legitimate self-government.”
- After FireEye IT discovered that a Russian-backed hacker had breached several government agencies and corporations earlier this month, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin deemed the attack “virtually a declaration of war.” In The Atlantic this week, senior Hoover Institution fellow Amy Zegart adds a dose of realism to that assessment. In actuality, all nations—including the United States—spy in cyberspace. For that reason, the answer to cyber attacks is prevention, not deterrence. “Cyberconflict is here to stay, and policy makers need to be clear-eyed about what steps will actually make us safer,” she writes. “Sounding tough won’t.”
- As we mentioned above, 2020 has been quite the year. So much has happened that we can’t even remember some of the biggest stories from the spring—and it’s our job to! That’s why we appreciated Axios’ fourth annual Google Trends chart, which tracks what stories people were paying the most attention to over the course of the year. Two of the most consistently searched terms were “TikTok” and “masks,” while several items from the Before Times—Qassem Suleimani, impeachment, Prince Harry and Meghan—served as a blast from the past.

Here’s the story I didn’t expect to be writing today: Early in the pandemic, distilleries stepped up to alleviate the shortage of hand sanitizer. This week the FDA informed them that they owe a surprise fee of more than $14,000 for the privilege.

Conservative Heroes of 2020
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 04:21 AM PST 2020 certainly revealed the extent at which the Republican Party is against conservatism. It became readily apparent that out of the fifty governors, majority Republican, there are still a mere handful of decent or good ones. In Congress, it is no secret that majority of Republicans are RINOs who quickly sold out their base. With the 2020 Election and Coronavirus, it was a year where ambitious figures did not have to do a whole lot to stand out, but they would have to be willing to stand alone. I believe in 2020, despite the talk of a silent majority, many of else felt far more isolated and alone. So it is worth celebrating the heroes of this cause however few there may be this year. Kristi Noem – Governor of the YearAt the beginning of the year, Kristi Noem had questionable conservative credentials. In fact, most governors in the United States were flaky which is why Mike Parsons was the winner last year. 2020 made obvious a number of Republican governors were overrated. Greg Abbott was nowhere when a judge was in favor of child abuse. And then he caved on coronavirus. Coronavirus revealed who the cowards and tyrants are. Kristi Noem rose above the field to establish South Dakota as a safe harbor for freedom. In the current political climate governing with freedom as a prime directive will bring about an onslaught of negative press. Kristi Noem’s ability to withstand the artificial pressure of social media is highly commendable and unfortunately rare. We celebrate Kristi Noem’s recognition that the government has no right to declare businesses nonessential. We recognize that Kristi Noem may have presidential aspirations and believe she has earned a place in the conversation due to her commitment to liberty when times were tough. An honorable mention must be given to Ron DeSantis who has also emerged as a champion of reopening. Ron DeSantis also looks poised to best combat the upcoming mutations which will also be used to curb liberty, as he has asserted more control over his executive branch than other governors who let their health departments run wild. Rand Paul – Legislature of the YearCongress did not do much in 2020. They conducted a phony impeachment. They gave Americans $1200 for their troubles while they funded the swamp. Congress held inconsequential hearings for big tech and took several vacation days while Americans suffered. This is not to say everyone in Congress did a bad job. There were some stand out performances. Ted Cruz was solid, as usual. Josh Hawley is at least trying to address major issues, such as Big Tech censorship, and has become the first Senator to commit to contesting the election certification. Mitch McConnell, though good for little else, ensured a safe confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett. But Rand Paul did the most to push back against the Left on coronavirus, and this was the issue of the year. In the House of Representatives, Chip Roy, Jim Jordan, and Thomas Massie have standout performances for standing up for liberty. Mo Brooks deserves commendation for standing up against election fraud. With this tough of competition, the edge goes to Rand Paul who dared to challenge Dr. Anthony Fauci as a doctor. Other CommendationsOn the Conservative media side of things, I believe Steve Deace, Daniel Horowitz, Jessie Kelly, and Clay Travis (even though he’s more of a Dave Rubin type) did the best job at representing conservative voice during lockdowns. Tucker Carlson, and countless others unwittingly were deceived by the scam that was being forced down the American public’s throat, or worse cravenly changed sides when the tide began to shift. In the private sector it is difficult to single out a single business owner. But those who defied lockdowns and opened their businesses and churches are far more heroic collectively than doctors and nurses. It’s not even comparable the bravery it takes to risk jail to feed your family in a dignified manner as opposed to waiting on the government for a bailout. Lastly, Kyle Rittenhouse deserves commendation. As I talk about here, when the government failed to perform its basic function, and adult citizenry were also unwilling to step up to protect their communities, he volunteered to fill the gap which ultimately amounted to risking his life. We need more Kyle Rittenhouses and fewer Bill Barrs. Final Thought2021 will not be an easier year. If someone wasn’t willing to stand up in 2020, do not count on them in 2021. COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. We could use some help keeping this site afloat.Colleagues have called me the worst fundraiser ever. My skills are squarely rooted on the journalistic side of running a news outlet. Paying the bills has never been my forte, but we’ve survived. We have ads on the site that help, but since the site’s inception this has been a labor of love that otherwise doesn’t bring in the level of revenue necessary to justify it. When I left a nice, corporate career in 2017, I did so knowing I wouldn’t make nearly as much money. But what we do at NOQ Report to deliver the truth and fight the progressive mainstream media narrative that has plagued this nation is too important for me to sacrifice it for the sake of wealth. We know we’ll never make a ton of money this way, and we’re okay with that. Things have become harder with the coronavirus lockdowns. Both ad money and donations that have kept us afloat for a while have dropped dramatically. We thought we could weather the storm, but the resurgence of lockdowns that mainstream media and Democrats are pushing has put our prospects in jeopardy. In short, we are now in desperate need of financial assistance. The best way NOQ Report readers can help is to donate. Our Giving Fuel page makes it easy to donate one-time or monthly. Alternatively, you can donate through PayPal as well. We need approximately $17,300 to stay afloat through March when we hope the economy will be more open, but more would be wonderful and any amount that brings us closer to our goal is greatly appreciated. The second way to help is to become a partner. We’ve strongly considered seeking angel investors in the past but because we were paying the bills, it didn’t seem necessary. Now, we’re struggling to pay the bills. This shouldn’t be the case as our traffic the last year has been going up dramatically. June, 2018, we had 11,678 visitors. A year later in June, 2019, we were up to 116,194. In June, 2020, we had 614,192. In November, 2020, we hit 1.2 million visitors. We’re heading in the right direction and we believe we’re ready talk to patriotic investors who want to not only “get in on the action” but more importantly who want to help America hear the truth. Interested investors should contact me directly with the contact button above. As the world spirals towards radical progressivism, the need for truthful journalism has never been greater. But in these times, we need as many conservative media voices as possible. Please help keep NOQ Report going.
American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. The coronavirus crisis has prompted many, even some conservatives, to promote authoritarianism. It’s understandable to some extent now, but it must not be allowed to embed itself in American life. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says willing to take vaccine ‘but I am not the priority’
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 04:00 AM PST Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters on Dec. 30 that he is willing to take the vaccine for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus but has not done so because he is not in one of the groups prioritized to received the vaccine first. “I’m willing to take it, but I am not the priority. They’re the priority. I’m under 45. So the people under 45 are not going to be first in line for this. So when it’s my turn, I will take it. But this is who I want to be vaccinated. I want my parents, our grandparents to be able to get it. And, you know, granted, I’m an elected official but whoop-de-do. At the end of the day, let’s focus where the risk is,” DeSantis said. A number of prominent politicians have taken the vaccine for the CCP virus, commonly known as the coronavirus. Former Vice President Joe Biden received the vaccine on Dec. 21. “We owe these folks a lot. The scientists and the people who put this together, the frontline workers, the people who were the ones that did the clinical work,” Biden said as he received a shot. Biden said he is “doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it’s available to take the vaccine,” adding, “There is nothing to worry about.” The former vice president was accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden, who also received her first dose of the vaccine. Other political leaders such as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Vice President Mike Pence, and others have received the vaccine. It’s not clear if and when President Donald Trump will receive the vaccine. “I didn’t feel a thing,” Pence said after receiving the Pfizer vaccine at the Walter Reed National Medical Center in Maryland. “Well done.” Trump administration officials had said they are projecting that 20 million people will be vaccinated against COVID-19, the disease caused by the CCP virus, by the end of the year. Georgia witness reveals 93% of military votes were supposedly for Joe Biden
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:51 AM PST Yesterday’s round of bombshell testimony before the Georgia legislative committee revealed many things we did not know before. But buried in the slew of evidence demonstrating rampant voter fraud on and after election night was an anecdotal tale that, by itself, proves there was massive voter fraud in Cobb County. Debbie Fisher, who was part of the voter review panel during the general election, revealed major discrepancies and multiple instances of apparent attempts to cover them up. She noted that military ballots were often uniform, unfolded, and overwhelmingly came out in favor of former Vice President Joe Biden. Members of the military usually lean towards Republicans, and even in heavy Democrat areas where the military may lean left, there is no known instance of a Democratic candidate receiving over 60% of the military vote. According to Fisher, records indicated that in Cobb County, which was conspicuously crucial for Biden to “win” the state of Georgia, records of military ballots indicated the Democrat received 93% of their votes. This is beyond remarkable. It is outright impossible. She also claimed that election officials put up roadblocks at every turn. When she would try to disqualify ballots for obvious challenges, she was denied. As an experienced election worker, Fisher noted that the circumstances surrounding this election were unprecedented. When asked if she was aware that 99.99% of ballots passed signature inspection, she noted that the “inspectors” were allowed to approve the ballots without appropriate oversight. Republican watchers were barred from observing the inspections or checking to see if they were accurate. It has been long speculated that Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger was part of the voter fraud scheme and subsequent cover up and his actions since the election seem to support this contention. If Democrats want to make the case that their base came out in droves for Joe Biden, so be it. But it’s an insult to our men and women in the armed forces for Democrats to claim overwhelming support from the military. This is voter fraud prima facie. Lin Wood accuses John Roberts of illegally adopting two young children from Wales through Jeffrey Epstein
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:55 AM PST Chief Justice John Roberts has faced many accusations over the years, particularly in the last few weeks as his weak leadership of the Supreme Court has seemed to be the primary roadblock to President Trump correcting the fraudulent 2020 election. He’s been accused of working to block the President’s reelection, of traveling to Epstein Island, and of a few other things. Most of the accusations have been debunked. A new accusation comes from attorney Lin Wood. The famed lawyer who has filed multiple lawsuits challenging the 2020 election has not been shy about sharing conspiracy theories, and this one definitely falls into the category. But if it can somehow be proven, it’s the type of bombshell that will offer lasting fodder to those who believe Roberts is corrupted by demonic forces. “My information from reliable source is that Roberts arranged an illegal adoption of two young children from Wales through Jeffrey Epstein. I think we can all agree that Epstein knows pedophilia. If only Jeffrey Epstein was still alive . . . Wouldn’t that be something?” Wood posted on Twitter.
It may just be fodder against a man who is loathed by those on both the political right and left, but it’s worth watching. If evidence can be brought to light, that truly would be something to shake the foundation of the judiciary. Our hopes for 2021 won’t be fulfilled by a politician, but by us
Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:29 AM PST COOK FOREST, Pennsylvania—It has just finished snowing here, and the forest looks magical, draped in white. It takes on a silvery blue shine under the blue sky that emerged after the storm finished leaving its mark. The silence is soon broken by the crunching of snowshoes off in the distance. Article originally published at Daily Signal. Southwest of here, a handful of anglers fishing the drift of the Slippery Rock Creek breaks the silence of the surrounding forest. At Laurel Hill, it is the rustling of the leftover fall leaves, softened by age and weather, under the weight of hikers’ boots. Along the High Bridge, the snow that is piled on the towering old Western Maryland Railroad tracks that span the gorge over the Youghiogheny River fails to deter cross-country skiers along the Great Allegheny Passage trail as the swooshes of their skis are the only sounds for miles. Sometimes, it is the small things that make the loudest sounds. Sometimes, it is the loudest things that make insignificant impacts. It is in the former where we can find peace, meaning, and purpose. It is in the latter that we find confusion and distrust. This old year is wearing down, and the new year beckons. In that span of time, all of us have lost something. Some of us have lost everything. None of us will ever be the same. That is the cut that hurts the most. Americans, whether their families have been here for several generations or they just gained their citizenship, are fiercely aspirational. We thrive on being part of something bigger than ourselves, even if the “big” isn’t that big. Americans are fiercely tied to traditions, community, faith, family, and service, all of which are slivers of the defining moments of our lives and all of which have fallen in the wake of the pandemic. As they have fallen, many have gone from fearing they might never come back to losing hope they ever will. It is a note we don’t just end the year with, but it is a reality we begin the new year with. The things we don’t want to come back in 2021 that most assuredly will are the combative public rhetoric in our politics and the politics of the coronavirus. The other thing that will most assuredly and unfortunately come back will be the constant drum of fear and gloom. Former Vice President Joe Biden set the tone of his approach to leadership last week when he said the “darkest days” in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic “are ahead of us, not behind us,” and he urged people to prepare themselves for the dark struggle. His words hang out there, and many wonder, what more do they want people to give up? How much more loss of treasure, community, family, liberty, and livelihood are we supposed to give up? And how is it that we’ve allowed the government to continue to pick who the winners and losers are in these restrictions? We’ve adapted all the ways we’ve been told to: wearing masks in public, avoiding crowds, social distancing, frequent hand-washing, testing, and quarantine rules. And you tell us the darkness we are in now is nothing compared with what we are about to face? Americans need something to aspire to—a purpose or someone who will take us to a better place. If 2020 taught us anything, then it taught us that that journey upward will not come from a politician, nor will it come from the loudest voices, which means it will likely come from within us as a people. That might be the best news for 2021. COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Enough already with using cartoons and cookies to sell LGBTQ agenda to kids
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:45 PM PST The year 2020 was tough for everyone, children and adults alike. Most school-age kids were forced to attend school virtually, at least for part of the year. This, combined with lockdowns, caused screen time use to surge. Article originally published at Daily Signal. More than usual, parents may fear kids aren’t learning well or are being exposed to things they aren’t yet mature enough to handle. On this, their intuition may be correct: 2020 saw an increase in LGBTQ-friendly marketing targeted at kids. Cartoon Network–whose primary audience is children—recently sent out this tweet:
“Here’s to not only normalizing gender pronouns, but respecting them, too,” Cartoon Network’s tweet reads. “Whether you use he/she/them or something else, we acknowledge and LOVE you!” In November, I covered similar efforts by two other somewhat kid-friendly brands, Oreo and Tampax.
Earlier this year, the TV channel Nickelodeon encouraged its young audience to accept transgender individuals.
Brands that provide products or entertainment typically reserved for a younger audience have been transparent, honest, and even persuasive that they are using their brand to look appealing and progressive, and to normalize LGBTQ issues, particularly transgender-related ideas. Twisting language to communicate political groupthink is hardly a new concept, but it has been a hallmark to capitalizing on the LGBTQ movement’s primary goal: Forcing others to accept these individuals to the point where they are not just equal to others but entitled. I could be wrong here, but it’s also the first time I’ve really seen children targeted as much as adults are, if not more. It’s not just brands that do this overtly. Production studios do it too. Every year for the past several years, The LGBTQ rights and media-monitoring group GLAAD has released its Studio Responsibility Index, which it says “maps the quantity, quality and diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) characters in films released by eight major motion picture studios during the 2019 calendar year.” The films were released by major studios such as Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, and Warner Bros. GLAAD says that its report “is intended to serve as a road map toward increasing fair, accurate and inclusive LGBTQ representation in film.” Of the films released by major studios in 2019, according to GLAAD, a total of 22 or 18.6% “contained characters identified as LGBTQ,” which the group counts as a “slight improvement.” Numbers for 2020 aren’t available yet, but based on observations and anecdotes, the year wasn’t too shabby for LGBTQ representation in media and marketing. It’s safe to say that LGBTQ representation in multimedia–from social media and television to marketing and films—has shown a slow but steady uptick in these ideas percolating, sometimes smack dab in our kids’ faces. This is frustrating on several fronts. For starters, when other things are marketed to children, such as religion or politics, outrage inevitably ensues. The woke masses cry out that Christianity or conservatism is trying to indoctrinate their children. The double standard is obvious and you need not be a conservative or a religious person to see it. All this LGBTQ representation, via brand marketing or entertainment, could make a child think that these ideas are normal, healthy, and exist happily everywhere. This could not be further from the truth. The transgender youth population is relatively small, although it’s rapidly increasing. In June 2019, a Gallup poll reported that Americans greatly overestimate the size of the gay and transgender population. That trend reinforces the thesis by Wall Street Journal writer Abigail Shrier, author of “Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters,” that transgender ideology is acting more as a contagion than a closeted societal norm waiting to break free. The transgender youth population also is at increased risk for depression and suicide, despite its ability to live freely because of nondiscrimination laws, to socially or medically transition, and to force others to use their “correct” pronouns. Debilitating unhappiness in a free country suggests that the issue may not be bigotry but the application of a failed cure because the illness is misdiagnosed. In a year when more young people were online, glued to screens more than ever before, it’s discouraging to see the persistence and consistency of brands and entertainment targeting children and youth and encouraging normalization of LGBTQ concepts among those precious resources. Of all the things the marketing and entertainment industries could do for our children–encourage them to read, play, be kind, respect their elders, reject foul language, or abstain from sex–they instead encourage the twisting of language, the acceptance of a “norm” that harms young people, and the perpetuation of a myth that the LGBTQ community is marginalized. It’s time for these industries to stick to telling stories, packaging cookies, or making people laugh–and leave our kids alone. President Trump declassifies intelligence report on Chinese bounties in Afghanistan
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 09:37 PM PST The Trump administration is declassifying a US intelligence report that China offered to pay non-state actors in Afghanistan to attack American forces, according to Axios, citing two senior administration officials. Article originally appeared at Zero Hedge. Amusingly, Axios prominently disclaims the intel as ‘unconfirmed’ in their headline – a word which somehow escaped the MSM’s vocabulary when a nearly identical report came out in June regarding alleged Russian bounties on American soldiers, which remains — unconfirmed. According to the report, Trump was briefed on the ‘as-yet uncorroborated’ Chinese bounty intelligence on December 17, and discussed it with national security adviser Robert O’Brien the same day according to officials. “The U.S. has evidence that the PRC [People’s Republic of China] attempted to finance attacks on American servicemen by Afghan non-state actors by offering financial incentives or ‘bounties’” and said the National Security Council “is coordinating a whole-of-government investigation,” one official told Axios, who would not say if he was referring to the Taliban or other ‘non-state actors.’ The same person said that the Trump administration received earlier intelligence regarding “PRC weapons illicitly flowing into Afghanistan.”
It’s unknown if members of Congress or President-elect Joe Biden have been briefed, however Biden currently has access to the President’s Daily Brief (PDB). When contacted for comment, the Chinese embassy in D.C. didn’t respond to the news outlet, while President Trump is not believed to have discussed it with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also unclear is when the alleged bounties were offered – though the source says it happened sometime after late February after the United States struck a deal with the Taliban. One senior official involved in the latest China discussions told Axios “Like all first reports, we react with caution to initial reports,” adding “any intel reports relating to the safety of our forces we take very seriously.” Following up on the briefing, officials conducted a Policy Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting to discuss the intelligence. The meeting had two objectives; gain more insight from the intelligence community to verify the initial reports, and to consult with the intelligence and defense communities involved in the force protection posture for the remaining US forces in Afghanistan. More via Axios: Behind the scenes: The intelligence was included in the president’s briefing on Dec. 17, and Trump was verbally briefed on the matter by National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, officials said.
Why it matters: If this intelligence were to be confirmed, it would represent a dramatic strategic shift for China, and sharply escalate tensions between China and the U.S. If the intelligence does not prove accurate, it raises questions about the motivations of the sources behind it as well as the decision to declassify it.

Dominion voting machines LIVE HACKED during Georgia Senate hearing
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 02:38 PM PST Despite all the fake news lies that claimed Dominion voting machines could not be hacked and could not be used to alter the outcome of the election, analyst Jovan Pulitzer has just unleashed a bombshell announcement during a live Georgia senate hearing. Article originally published at Natural News. White hat hackers were able to remotely gain full control over the Dominion voting machines, enabling them to remotely alter election results. Both Dominion and the fake news media have insisted this is impossible. They are lying. The game is over. The fraud is now exposed. The entire election was a fraud, and the upcoming Georgia runoff election is uncertifiable. This will give members of Congress the power to vote for the Trump slate of electors on January 6th, and it will grant Trump the full justification he needs to invoke his 2018 executive order on foreign interference in US elections. Watch the short video below. Here’s the relevant transcript: Jovan Pulitzer, regarding Fulton County At this very moment at a polling location in the county, not only do we now have access through the devices to the poll pad–the system, but WE ARE IN. And it’s not supposed to have WiFi and that’s not supposed to be able to happen so we’ve documented now it’s communicating two ways in real time, meaning it’s receiving data and sending data … should never happen, shouldn’t be WiFi, we’ve now documented it in real time. This is coming through the polling pad device… it only takes one device where you daisy chain them together and do it. The most important thing is that shouldn’t be two-waying and even should even be accessible or on, and it’s there. Statistically what can be going on when you have an operation like this is as that data is being exchanged and somebody is in it, can actually siphon off that data, modify that data and feed it right back into the system, or kind of do a pump-and-dump in real time. Not only are you in the system, but then once you get into the machine you can do stuff in real time, changing it [with] intent. That’s what it opens up.
Massachusetts legalizes infanticide, removes requirement to save babies who survive an abortion
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:53 PM PST Massachusetts approved a controversial abortion rights bill Tuesday that pro-lifers call one of the most extreme in the nation due to its language on late-term abortions and on protecting babies who survive an abortion. Article originally appeared at Christian Headlines. The state Senate, by a vote of 32-8, overrode the veto of Republican Gov. Charlie Baker, one day after the state House overrode his veto, 107-46. Democrats control both chambers. The bill, H.B. 5179, overhauls the state’s abortion laws by expanding access to late-term abortion and striking an old law that required doctors to save the life of a late-term baby who survives an abortion. “The commonwealth … shall not interfere with a person’s personal decision and ability to prevent, commence, terminate or continue their own pregnancy,” the new law says. Critics called it the “infanticide bill.” Specifically, the new law:
The Massachusetts Republican Party criticized Democrats for promoting the bill. In a statement, the Massachusetts GOP noted that the House passed the bill on the Day of the Holy Innocents, a day on the Catholic liturgical calendar that marks the slaughter of young male children in Bethlehem as described in Matthew 2:16. “House Speaker Bob DeLeo picked Dec. 28, a holy day shared by millions in remembrance of the Day of the Holy Innocents, the mass-killing of martyred babies, to force an override vote to pass this sick legislation that effectively legalizes the killing of babies born alive following failed abortions,” the Massachusetts GOP said in a statement. “Speaker DeLeo has proven himself to be a modern-day King Herod and this twisted irony should not be lost on anyone who values living in a humane and compassionate society.” But Democrats applauded passage of the bill, which they called the Roe Act. “The Roe Act is now law of the land in Massachusetts,” said Democratic state Sen. Harriette Chandler. “Beginning today, pregnant people who once faced near-insurmountable barriers accessing abortion care can now seize the right to control their own bodies.” COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Why are Republicans conceding this election stolen by the Democrats?
Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:42 PM PST We are facing unprecedented times in America. We’ve had almost a year of lockdowns, riots and anarchy in the streets and now a stolen election reminiscent of a Third World Dictatorship. During difficult times like this, we see who the true Patriots are. As we’ve long suspected, the GOP simply has no spine and refuse to take a stand for truth and the Constitution. In response to the stolen election of 2020, we are seeing that there are very few Republicans willing to take a stand for the sanctity of our elections. It’s time to separate the wheat from the chaff, as the Bible says. The line is drawn in the sand, Republican leaders: you are either with us or against us. If you refuse to take a stand against Election Fraud, you are clearly against us. Eric Matheny, host of Bob & Eric Save America here on Freedom First Network, joins this episode of Freedom One-On-One with Jeff Dornik to expose the RINOs that are in leadership selling out to the Globalist Left. The reality of this is that we, as Patriots who love America, can no longer tolerate this constant selling out from our leaders. It’s time we say: Enough is Enough! If you refuse to defend President Donald Trump in exposing the Deep State’s rigging of this election, then we are done with you! It’s do or die time for America, folks. We are in the fight for our lives. Are we willing to have rise up and take our country back? Or will we fold like Republicans always have? I don’t know about you, but I’ve got the President’s back all the way! I hope you’ll join me…

Thursday, December 31, 2020
Good morning, NBC News readers.
Healthcare workers are under strain in Southern California, Mitch McConnell warns $2,000 stimulus checks will not pass quickly through the Senate and how people around the world found glimmers of hope in 2020.
Here is what’s happening this Thursday morning.
Southern California healthcare workers overwhelmed by Covid-19 surge Doctors and nurses in Southern California say they are struggling to cope as a relentless surge of Covid-19 cases has overwhelmed hospitals and intensive care units for most of December following the Thanksgiving holiday.
State public health officials recently extended stay-at-home orders for the hardest-hit regions, including Southern California and the San Joaquin Valley, where ICU capacity has been at 0 percent for several weeks.
“We can’t take much more,” said one ICU nurse in Torrance, California.
The health workers’ plea comes as California became the second state to confirm cases of a highly-contagious coronavirus variant that was first detected in the United Kingdom.
Meantime, officials overseeing the rollout of vaccines across the country blamed its slower-than-expected pace on a variety of factors including snowstorms, the holidays, storage challenges and general inexperience. McConnell blasts CASH Act, dampening hopes for $2,000 stimulus checks Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell dampened hopes Wednesday that the chamber would agree to increasing direct coronavirus relief payments to eligible Americans from $600 to $2,000, as requested by President Donald Trump.
McConnell, R-Ky., blasted the CASH Act that was passed by the House on Monday, arguing that some of the funds go to families who don’t need it and vowed the chamber would not be “bullied into rushing out more borrowed money.”
In other politics news, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., announced Wednesday that he would object to the certification of some states’ Electoral College results. Doing so will force his fellow Republicans to go on the record about whether they support Trump’s unsubstantiated voter fraud claims. Read more here.
Meanwhile, since Election Day the Trump administration has made dozens of new rules, including on access to asylum and a rejection of stricter limits for soot emissions. The “midnight rule-making” could create hurdles for President-elect Joe Biden.

One moving thing The past year has been one of desperation and darkness, but all around the world people found hope.
As 2020 draws to a close, NBC News spoke with 13 people in five countries about where they found hope during the coronavirus pandemic.
Their responses varied from simple actions, such as mindfulness exercises while in lockdown, to acts of kindness that improved the lives of others.
“If you explicitly work on focusing on the good things that happened, no matter what they were, you will feel better,” one psychiatrist said. Trauma experts say hope is key to staying grounded when life has been upended. (Photo: Mikyung Lee/for NBC News)
