📦 Good Wednesday morning. Today’s Smart Brevity™ count: 1,182 words … 4½ minutes.
Graphic: MSNBC
Advisers to President Trump tell me three forces drove last night’s twin bombshells — a slew of pardons for his allies, and a last-hour attack on the $900 billion stimulus bill as a “disgrace”:
- Because he can: As Jonathan Swan has explained, Trump loves pardons for the same reason he relishes executive orders — pure power and instant gratification. A longtime Trump official says that pardons are uniquely satisfying to Trump because he can overturn the work of another branch of government, the judiciary.
- He wants attention: As the nation moves on from the election and President-elect Biden names a Cabinet and addresses the nation, Trump — mostly out of sight for the past seven weeks — “sees Biden being relevant every day,” one presidential adviser said. That helps explain the video Trump tweeted 14 minutes after announcing the pardons, calling on Congress to increase “ridiculously low” stimulus checks from $600 for an individual to $2,000.
- It splits the party: Trump wants the Republican Party to remain beholden to him, and is desperate to retain his GOP power past Jan. 20. Top Republicans are increasingly queasy about the two runoffs in Georgia on Jan. 5 that will determine which party controls the Senate. Last night’s White House actions undermine the GOP Senate candidates by fomenting turmoil and distraction, and robbing the senators of a clear win on the stimulus.
Many of the pardons appear to have been granted on whim.
- The N.Y. Times’ Michael Schmidt told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow: “[I]t’s clear that many of them don’t even meet the basic criteria to receive a typical Justice Department recommendation for a pardon. So that means that they operated essentially outside the system,” with people lobbying Trump and his confidants.
The pardons included former Reps. Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York, two of the earliest GOP lawmakers to back Trump’s 2016 campaign.
- Axios’ Glen Johnson points out that the two voluntarily pleaded guilty to well-documented insider-trading and campaign-spending violations.
- Another pardon went to George Papadopoulos, the former Trump campaign adviser, who pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about Russian contacts.
On the stimulus, Trump just talked to a camera, with no press present — political theater and posturing, Johnson emails me.
- The president made a populist case against a bill his own Treasury secretary helped negotiate — and which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who antagonized Trump by finally recognizing Biden as president-elect, helped send to the Oval Office with a veto-proof majority.
Go deeper: Snapshots for 20 of the pardons and commutations.
Adding together this year’s two COVID relief packages, the amount of stimulus passed by Congress in 2020 would dwarf any previous U.S. government spending program — including New Deal legislation, Axios’ Felix Salmon reports.
- Before this year, America’s largest-ever spending program was President Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act — which clocked in at just over $1 trillion, in today’s money.
Per capita, or as a percentage of GDP, the record was held by FDR’s New Deal of 1933-35, which spent about $6,680 in today’s dollars for every living American.
- Both records could be smashed this year, with stimulus so far totaling some $8,845 per American.

Every crisis tech faces — from the onslaught of antitrust litigation, to the cyberattack, to the pandemic’s toll on health and the economy — is unfolding in slow motion, managing editor Scott Rosenberg writes from the Bay Area.
- Why it matters: Tech built its success on eliminating delays — from the late-20th-century dawn of personal computing’s Moore’s Law-driven exponential growth, and the beginning of supercharged “internet time.” That magic is failing at this historic moment.
When the judge in the Justice Department’s lawsuit against Google estimated that the case would be likely to come to trial in 2023, you could hear the collective jaw-drop from industry leaders, critics and journalists alike.
- 2023! Three years is a generation in tech.
When coronavirus lockdowns first hit last March, the tech industry was able to leap in and ramp up videoconferencing, home delivery services, contact-tracing app development and other rapid adaptations to the new reality.
- But the resolution of the crisis is happening on a much slower timeline.
On the cyberattack, you can patch the flaw that led to the initial breach. But when enemies have been freely roaming inside your network for months, rooting them out requires significant expenditure — and deep patience.

Freight lorries jam the tarmac of Manston International Airport in South East England, after France imposed a 48-hour blockade aimed at stemming the new virus strain.
54% of people who survived a coronavirus infection say the experience made them take the pandemic more seriously, health care editor Sam Baker writes from an Axios/Ipsos survey— the first to focus exclusively on people who have contracted the virus.
Key caveat: This survey covered 319 people who said they had tested positive for a coronavirus infection. That’s a relatively small sample, and it has a relatively large margin of error, at +/- 7.5 percentage points.
- But it’s still the first survey of its kind, and it provides valuable statistical insight, in big-picture terms, into the thoughts and feelings of the large and growing share of Americans who have been infected during this pandemic.

A normally sleepy side of the auto industry — used car sales — is the hot new thing for some automakers who sense they are losing lucrative business to online newcomers, Axios Navigate author Joann Muller writes.
- Why it matters: While feasting for years on profits from expensive SUVs and trucks, many automakers have forfeited the lower end of the market at precisely the time many COVID-wary consumers are looking for an affordable alternative to public transportation.
What’s happening: Fast-growing digital used-car retailers like Carvana and Vroom are taking advantage of the vacuum by making it easy for budget-constrained consumers to find the car they want, complete the purchase online and then have it delivered to their doorstep.
- Both Vroom and Carvana — which offers the added twist of used-car “vending machines” — have seen strong consumer demand in 2020.
Idaho was the state with the biggest population increase from July 2019 to July 2020, growing 2.1% to 1.8 million residents, AP reports from Census Bureau estimates.
- Next was Arizona, which grew 1.8%; Nevada, which increased 1.5%; Utah, which grew 1.4%; and Texas, which increased 1.3%.
New York — the pandemic’s epicenter in the spring — had the nation’s biggest decline, losing an estimated 126,000 residents, or a dip of 0.65%.
- Next was Illinois, with a 0.63% drop; Hawaii, with a 0.61% decline; West Virginia, with a 0.58% drop; and Mississippi, with a 0.38% decline.
This is the deadliest year in U.S. history, with deaths expected to top 3 million for the first time — due mainly to the pandemic, AP reports.
- Final mortality data for this year will not be available for months. But preliminary numbers suggest that the United States is on track to see more than 3.2 million deaths this year, or at least 400,000 more than in 2019.
- COVID has killed more than 318,000 Americans.
Brookings’ Adam Looney, a Treasury Department tax official in the Obama administration, told the N.Y. Times that the government’s pandemic relief efforts are disproportionately helping high-income business owners:
The year 2020 is going to be one of the most unequal years in modern history.

The Disney World bubble kept the NBA safe from COVID-19 this summer. Last night marked the beginning of an even greater challenge: staging a 72-game season in the real world, Axios Sports author Kendall Baker writes.
- The Brooklyn Nets blew out the Golden State Warriors, 125-99, in Kevin Durant’s grand return from injury against his old team.
- The Los Angeles Clippers beat LeBron James and his reigning champion Lakers, 116-109.

DRIVING THE DAY
IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE QUIET, but we should’ve known better.
IN ONE NIGHT, President DONALD TRUMP pardoned three crooked former Republican congressmen and some private security guards convicted of killing civilians in Iraq, endorsed a primary challenge to Sen. JOHN THUNE (R-S.D.) — “Mitch’s boy,” he said, and also a candidate to be the next Senate GOP leader — and is on the brink of blowing up a massive bipartisan spending and Covid relief deal that his administration negotiated with Capitol Hill.
WE’RE SORRY IF YOU DECIDED TO UNPLUG or downshift in these closing days of this wretched year.
IF YOU WEREN’T PAYING ATTENTION, TRUMP released a quite bizarre video Tuesday night, in which he suggested he was unhappy with the Covid relief/government funding deal. He spent much of the video decrying the foreign spending in the bill, suggesting that it shouldn’t be in a coronavirus package. Of course, the foreign spending wasn’t part of the relief package itself, but rather part of a government funding bill it was twinned with to ease passage in the Senate.
SOURCES TELL US that TRUMP was angry at that foreign spending — even though he’s signed similar spending countless times. He also seemed pumped to one-up Congress on the direct payments portion. He said he wanted $2,000 checks, and Congress had only approved $600 checks.
THE THINKING IN THE WHITE HOUSE — if there is any at all — seems to also be that TRUMP is eager to show that he’s more generous than Congress, and wants to put more money in the pockets of everyday Americans. They think it’s never wrong to go against the Hill, and act like the outsider that he thinks himself to be. Plus, he puts everyone in a jam and redirects the attention back his way.
OF COURSE, he also makes a complete fool of Washington’s Most Eager Man, Treasury Secretary STEVEN MNUCHIN, and the rest of his administration as a result. The $600 check was partially their idea! Don’t be fooled here, the White House was wishy washy on what size check they could accept, and they eventually settled on $600.
SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI took TRUMP up on the idea to up the payments, suggesting that she would offer a bill to increase the direct checks to $2,000 by unanimous consent — the House is in for a very short session on Christmas Eve. Someone in the House would almost certainly object to this, of course — looking at you, Reps. JUSTIN AMASH (Libertarian-Mich.), CHIP ROY (R-Texas) and TOM MASSIE (R-Ky.).
AND THERE IS PRACTICALLY NO WAY this will get consent in the Senate. But TRUMP doesn’t really seem to give a hoot whether he divides Senate Republicans on his way out the door.
TRUMP ALSO ASKED for Congress to “get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation, and to send me a suitable bill, or else the next administration will have to deliver a Covid relief package, and maybe that administration will be me.”
OF COURSE, Congress is not going to renegotiate this bill at this late hour, and the next administration will not be his.
HERE’S THE REALITY: TRUMP now has five days to sign the package Congress passed or else the government shuts down. Real-world stuff, guys. As we’ve written, Congress pushed through a seven-day stopgap as part of this package, and TRUMP has already signed that. Dec. 28 is the day by which he needs to make a decision — this coming Monday. Unemployment benefits end this week for many people. These are real-world deadlines that TRUMP needs to consider in the midst of a worsening pandemic as he relaxes at his Mar-a-Lago club over the Christmas holiday.
IT’S DIFFICULT to see why the White House thinks it’s helpful to TRUMP to look as if he has no sway with the legislature.
IF HE DOES VETO, can Congress come back and override it? Maybe — probably! So, again, it’s difficult to see why it’s helpful to have TRUMP choose to lose another fight with Congress.
IF TRUMP DOES VETO and Congress can’t override it, the Hill will just pass this again in January, and JOE BIDEN will get to take credit, and TRUMP will get none. 4D chess.
AND WHAT ABOUT GOP Sens. DAVID PERDUE and KELLY LOEFFLER, who have been touting the bill in Georgia? Where does this leave them?
28 DAYS until BIDEN takes office.
Good Wednesday morning.
SOME PRE-CHRISTMAS GOOD NEWS! — “Pfizer Nears Deal With Trump Administration to Provide More Vaccine Doses,” by NYT’s Sharon LaFraniere and Katie Thomas: “The Trump administration and Pfizer are close to a deal under which the pharmaceutical company would bolster supply of its coronavirus vaccine for the United States by at least tens of millions of doses next year in exchange for a government directive giving it better access to manufacturing supplies, people familiar with the discussions said.
“An agreement, which could be announced as early as Wednesday, would help the United States at least partly offset a looming vaccine shortage that could leave as many as 110 million adult Americans uncovered in the first half of 2021.”
MEANWHILE … LAT: “Coronavirus wave pushes California to brink of 2 million cases,” by Luke Money and Rong-Gong Lin II
ICYMI — AP: “WH virus coordinator Deborah Birx says she will retire,” by AP’s Aamer Madhani and Brian Slodysko: “Dr. Deborah Birx, coordinator of the White House coronavirus response, said Tuesday she plans to retire, but is willing to first help President-elect Joe Biden’s team with its coronavirus response as needed. Birx, in an interview with the news site Newsy, did not give a specific timetable on her plans. ‘I will be helpful in any role that people think I can be helpful in, and then I will retire,’ Birx told the news outlet.” The interview
A MERRY CHRISTMAS FOR SOME CONVICTED CRIMINALS … KYLE CHENEY and JOSH GERSTEIN: “Trump latest batch of pardons favors the well-connected”
— WAPO: “Trump grants clemency to 20 people, including three former GOP members of Congress and two men convicted in the Russia probe,” by Rosalind Helderman, Matt Zapotosky and Josh Dawsey: “President Trump granted clemency on Tuesday to 20 people, including three former Republican members of Congress and two people who were convicted of crimes as part of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
“He also pardoned four military contractors convicted of killing 14 unarmed Iraqi civilians in Baghdad in 2007, and extended clemency to several people convicted of drug offenses, including some who had already benefited from initial commutations. The pre-Christmas pardons and commutations came as the president has been exploring how to reward friends and allies in his waning days in the White House, with more acts of clemency expected to come.
“Trump has told advisers he wants to be liberal with pardons and plans to sign more before leaving office on Jan. 20, according to people familiar with his views. The White House has been flooded with requests from dozens of members of Congress, one senior administration official said, as well as lawyers, lobbyists, allies and other supporters of the president.” WaPo
AND THIS — NYT: “U.S. Considers Granting Immunity to Saudi Prince in Suspected Assassination Attempt,” by Pranshu Verma and Mark Mazzetti: “The Trump administration is considering a request to grant Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia immunity from a federal lawsuit that accuses him of trying to kill a former Saudi intelligence official living in Canada, legal documents related to the case show.
“If the request is granted, the State Department’s recommendation could potentially provide a legal basis to dismiss other cases against the prince, most notably one where he is accused of directing the assassination of the Saudi dissident Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, a person familiar with the case said.”
IRAN ALIGNS ITSELF WITH TRUMP — “FBI links Iran to online hit list targeting top officials who’ve refuted Trump’s election fraud claims,” by WaPo’s Ellen Nakashima, Amy Gardner and Aaron Davis: “The FBI has concluded that Iran was behind online efforts earlier this month to incite lethal violence against the bureau’s director, a former top U.S. cyber expert and multiple state elections officials who have refuted claims of widespread voter fraud promoted by President Trump and his allies, federal and state officials said Tuesday.
“FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and ousted Homeland Security Department official Christopher Krebs were among more than a dozen people whose images, home addresses and other personal information were posted on a website titled ‘Enemies of the People.’ Crosshairs were superimposed over the photos.
“Many of these officials in one way or another have attested to the security of November’s election, saying they had not seen evidence of widespread fraud — a conclusion at odds with Trump’s baseless claims that the election was rigged.”
NEWSOM NAMES PADILLA — “Meet Alex Padilla, California’s first Latino U.S. senator and a rising political star since his 20s,” by LAT’s Patrick McGreevy and Phil Willon in Sacramento: “People have been saying Alex Padilla is a politician to watch since he was in his early 20s. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology-trained engineer gave up a career in aerospace to enter politics at an early age. At 26, he became Los Angeles’ youngest council member. Then, he went on to be the face of city government in the days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“That brought him national prominence. ‘This can only be helpful, if you want to be crude in the political sense, to whatever future plans he has,’ one political consultant said of Padilla at the time. Now, he is set to become California’s first Latino U.S. senator, appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill the term of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.” LAT
THE TRANSITION SLOWDOWN … “How the Georgia runoffs could delay Biden’s Cabinet,” by Marianne LeVine and Burgess Everett: “The next Congress will begin in a haze of uncertainty — and that has consequences for President-elect Joe Biden. With the Senate majority unknown until the Jan. 5 Georgia runoffs, much of the chamber’s business remains up in the air — potentially for days or weeks after if the elections are tight and certification is postponed. And that could mean more delay for staffing Biden’s cabinet and implementing his agenda.
“Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), who could chair the Senate HELP Committee in the next Congress, said that the current state of limbo renders the confirmation process ‘moot’ until control of the Senate is clear.
“‘If you can’t form committees until Jan, 6, 7, 8, something like that? And know whether you’re in the majority or minority? Staff, schedule, meet with nominees, look at FBI files for the chair and ranking member?’ Burr asked. ‘You only really have two weeks there before the inauguration. I’m just not confident a whole lot can be accomplished.’”
— “Biden faces uncertain outlook for quick confirmation of Cabinet nominees as some Republicans urge caution,” by CNN’s Manu Raju and Ted Barrett
TRUMP’S WEDNESDAY — The president and first lady Melania Trump will leave the White House at 4 p.m. en route to West Palm Beach, Fla. They will arrive at Mar-a-Lago at 6:55 p.m.
BIDEN and VP-elect KAMALA HARRIS will make a transition announcement. They will also meet with transition advisers.
PLAYBOOK READS
DACA LATEST — “DACA backers ask judge for reprieve until Biden administration,” by Josh Gerstein: “A lawyer for states seeking to preserve the Obama-era program for so-called Dreamers asked a federal judge Tuesday to hold off ruling on a legal challenge to the arrangement until President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in next month.
“With backers of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program expecting another adverse decision from U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen, they pleaded with him to wait to see what the Biden administration does before issuing a ruling on a lawsuit Texas and other conservative states brought in 2018 to the original DACA plan issued back in 2012.
“‘Given … the ongoing federal transition we think this court can expect further changes to that framework soon,’ New Jersey State Solicitor Jeremy Feigenbaum said during a three-hour-plus court hearing in Houston. ‘Policies can be a bit of a moving target during [a] transition.’ Hanen seemed unpersuaded by the suggestion.
“‘How can they change what happened eight years ago?’ asked the judge, a George W. Bush appointee who blocked President Barack Obama’s effort to expand DACA in 2015. Feigenbaum said the new administration couldn’t turn back time but could clarify ‘confusion’ about the program in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt in 2017 to initiate a phase-out of DACA.”
BEYOND THE BELTWAY — DAVID SIDERS: “The Fall of Michael Tubbs”
OPIOID WARS — “U.S. Sues Walmart, Alleging Role in Fueling Opioid Crisis,” by WSJ’s Timothy Puko and Sadie Gurman: “The Trump administration sued Walmart Inc. Tuesday, accusing the retail giant of helping to fuel the nation’s opioid crisis by inadequately screening for questionable prescriptions despite repeated warnings from its own pharmacists.
“The Justice Department’s lawsuit claims Walmart sought to boost profits by understaffing its pharmacies and pressuring employees to fill prescriptions quickly. That made it difficult for pharmacists to reject invalid prescriptions, enabling widespread drug abuse nationwide, the suit alleges.
“Walmart responded in a public filing Tuesday, saying the lawsuit ‘invents a legal theory that unlawfully forces pharmacists to come between patients and their doctors, and is riddled with factual inaccuracies and cherry-picked documents taken out of context.’”

The Morning Briefing: We Need a Vaccine to Save Us From Bipartisan ‘Relief’ Bills
We Should Be More Relieved By the Relief, Shouldn’t We?
Happy Wednesday, dear Kruiser Morning Briefing friends. I’m Zooming myself more these days.
Much is said and written about the deeply partisan divide in the United States these days, especially the rift between our elected representatives in Washington, D.C. The implication is always that bipartisan cooperation between Republicans and Democrats is what America needs more than anything.
Let me state emphatically here that I am not a real fan.
I’m logically consistent on this. I’m also a big fan of government shutdowns. The less Congress is working, the safer it is for the wallets of American taxpayers. It’s even worse when the GOP and the Dems are working together. It’s real Stephen King stuff for the hard-earned dollars of the citizens then.
I hadn’t paid much attention to the “debate” over the spending bill because I’ve seen how that sausage is made too many times to expect that this time would have been any different. I was quite surprised that this one is so awful that I got a text about it yesterday morning from a friend who hasn’t worked in politics in a few years.
Why do these people have to ever get along?
On Monday, Victoria wrote that President Trump should veto the bill, and Bryan wrote one yesterday indicating that the president agrees:
Noting that the bill is more than 5,000 pages long, and that no one in Congress has had time to read it before voting on it, Trump said that “it has almost nothing to do with COVID.”
“This bill contains $85.5 million for assistance to Cambodia. $134 million to Burma. $1.3 billion for Egypt and the Egyptian military, which will go out and buy almost exclusively Russian military equipment,” the president said.
“$25 million for democracy and gender programs in Pakistan. $505 million to Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.”
Shifting to the domestic side of the spending, Trump called out “$40 million for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., which is not even open for business. $1 billion for the Smithsonian,” which was first reported here at PJ Media, “and an additional $154 million for the National Gallery of Art,” which he noted are also not open.
“The bill also allows stimulus checks for the family members of illegal aliens,” the president said, “allowing them to get up to $1,800 each. This is far more than the Americans are given.”
There’s the thing — all of the media chatter about this has been referring to it as a COVID relief bill. Yes, we’re all aware that this is how these spending bills get done. That’s the problem though, isn’t it? This little pork dance just gets worse with each new spending bill. Ninety-nine percent of the people who get elected to the House or Senate immediately become afflicted with brain damage that renders them incapable of understanding the meaning of “fiscal responsibility.”
OK, I plucked the “ninety-nine percent” out of thin air but I’m sure that’s not far off. There were six Republicans who opted not to play along with this insane reindeer game:
I’m very proud to say that I’ve met all but one of them and had good conversations with a few of them.
We’re going to need more people than that pushing back against the boondoggles, however. Passing a massive spending bill that will further burden a taxpaying public that has largely been unemployed or underemployed for almost a year is unconscionable. The fact that they’re patting themselves on the back for throwing those same taxpayers a $600 crumb at the end of the process is a hot mess of tone-deaf and evil.
Ronald Reagan’s words about the government and helping ring truer as time goes on.
Let’s hope they can get back to bickering so much that they can’t help again for a while.

Happy Wednesday! And happy Festivus for the rest of us—go get the pole out of the crawl space!
Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories
- Less than 24 hours after Congress approved a massive omnibus bill that included $900 billion in coronavirus relief, President Trump tweeted out a video in which he called the package—which his administration played a large role in negotiating—a “disgrace,” asking Congress to increase the size of the legislation’s stimulus checks from $600 per person to $2,000. Democratic leaders signaled they are on board with the change, but Republicans have blocked previous attempts to increase the size of the checks. It remains unclear if Trump will actually veto the package, but it passed both chambers of Congress with veto-proof majorities.
- Israel’s government collapsed on Tuesday when the country’s parliament dissolved itself after failing to approve an annual budget. The development triggers a national election—the fourth in just two years—scheduled for March 23.
- President Trump announced Tuesday night he had granted full pardons to 15 people and commuted the sentences of five more. Among those receiving clemency were two former GOP representatives who were very early Trump supporters—Rep. Duncan Hunter (pled guilty to misusing campaign funds) and Rep. Chris Collins (pled guilty to insider trading)—a Trump campaign official, George Papadopoulos (pled guilty to lying to the FBI), and four former Blackwater security contractors convicted on charges ranging from first degree murder to voluntary manslaughter following their involvement in the 2007 shooting of Iraqi civilians.
- The Justice Department sued Walmart on Tuesday, alleging the company contributed to the nationwide opioid crisis by failing to adequately screen questionable prescriptions. Walmart responded by calling the suit a “transparent attempt to shift blame” from the government’s “well-documented failures in keeping bad doctors from prescribing opioids in the first place.”
- Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday he is appointing Alex Padilla, California’s secretary of state, to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
- The United States confirmed 182,945 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 10.9 percent of the 1,672,173 tests reported coming back positive. An additional 3,222 deaths were attributed to the virus on Tuesday, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 322,585. According to the COVID Tracking Project, 117,777 Americans are currently hospitalized with COVID-19. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 4,624,325 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed nationwide, and 614,117 have been administered. (The CDC has not updated its vaccine dashboard since yesterday.)
Vaccine Recipients Breathe a Sigh of Relief
There have been distribution hiccups in the two weeks since the Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for Pfizer and BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine (and one week since it authorized Moderna’s), but the rollout is ongoing: Millions of doses have shipped, and hundreds of thousands of Americans—primarily healthcare workers and nursing home residents—have received their first of two shots.
A few recipients of the inoculation experienced an allergic reaction to it, but that has thankfully been an exceedingly rare phenomenon thus far. Mike Pence, Joe Biden, Anthony Fauci, and many congressional leaders have received the vaccine publicly in recent days to demonstrate their confidence in its safety and efficacy.
The Dispatch spoke in recent days with several vaccine recipients—who qualify for a variety of reasons—about their experience both before and after receiving the first shot.
Dr. Beth Nesbitt has been intubating COVID patients at Inova Loudoun Hospital in Leesburg, Virginia for months, and was thrilled to finally receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine this week. “I felt really happy about it, and felt like we’re coming out of the shadow of this pandemic,” Nesbitt told The Dispatch.
Her employer’s vaccine prioritization scheme bumped healthcare workers who interact face to face with COVID patients on a daily basis to the front of the line. Next, she said, are people who work in the hospital but don’t necessarily interface with patients: Housekeeping, cafeteria employees, etc.
The vaccine will bring peace of mind to these healthcare workers, but it won’t necessarily change much about their day-to-day protocols. Nesbitt said that she and her colleagues will continue to abide by universal coronavirus precautions even after Inova Loudoun has completed its vaccine rollout, given how many COVID-19 positive patients are still being admitted into her hospital on a weekly basis. “We’ll wear masks, but perhaps we won’t wear the N-95 masks every day,” she said. “Maybe we’ll just get away with a regular mask and a face shield, as opposed to the N-95 for most things.”
Dr. Kelly Colingo, an anesthesiologist from McLean, Virginia (and the mother of one of your Morning Dispatchers!) told The Dispatch she felt “honored” to be among the first Americans to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. “I wasn’t scared at all, because I’ve seen what COVID does to people,” she said, recounting the numerous patients she’s encountered needing to be intubated or about to go into respiratory arrest. “I’ve seen so many people die and so many people be really sick. … They’re so afraid.”
Katie Dwyer—a registered nurse in the emergency room at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago—told The Dispatch she felt “a huge relief” as she was driving home from her shift the day she received her COVID-19 vaccine. Dwyer said that some of her coworkers experienced a mild headache after getting it, but that she personally experienced no side effects. “My arm was just pretty sore the next few days after, but that’s how it felt with any other vaccine I’ve gotten,” Dwyer said. “So I actually felt really good—experienced no side effects at all.”
Assisted living facility staff are also thrilled to finally be able to vaccinate their high-risk residents. Michael Hicks, CEO of Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown, West Virginia, told The Dispatch on Monday that they have already administered the first dose to nearly all of its residents. He said no one who received the vaccine exhibited any adverse reaction other than a sore arm at the injection site.
Some Americans got vaccinated months ago—when there was considerably more risk involved. They just can’t be sure whether they were injected with vaccine or saline.
Dana Mennon, a 57-year-old resident of Nashville, Tennessee, received her first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in early September as a participant in the company’s blind clinical trials. After she saw a newspaper ad for the vaccine study in August, Mennon said she “had not a moment’s hesitation” about enrolling as a participant. “I’m a mom,” Mennon noted. “I have three adult children, and I know it’s important to be able to get on with their lives. And the only way they can is if I do this.”
She said she experienced mild symptoms after her first dose of the vaccine in September, but came down with a 100.7 degree fever the day after receiving her second dose three weeks later. “I don’t know with 100 percent certainty that I got the real vaccine, but I don’t think a placebo would make you that sick,” Mennon said.
As a participant in the study, Mennon will continue to have her blood drawn every six months for two years to test her immune system for antibodies. “I also have an app on my phone, and every week I get a reminder, and I have to go in and indicate if I’ve had any COVID symptoms at all, which I have not,” Mennon said.
Mennon hopes that posting about her personal experience on her Facebook page will inspire confidence in the vaccine’s safety and efficacy among her friends and family. “As an American, maybe this is my small part of doing something for my country,” she said. “I’m not a scientist. I’m not a researcher. I’m not a big splash person. But hey, I can get a shot and let them follow me and see what happens.”
U.S. Military Posturing Across the Globe
The Navy conducted two strategic ship movements this week, sending vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and into the South China Sea in an effort to project American military power to Iran and China, respectively. At the same time, an Israeli submarine traversed the Suez Canal in an additional show of force directed at regional rival Iran.
The passage of an American nuclear-powered guided-missile submarine through the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf came just days after a rocket attack targeted the U.S. embassy in Baghdad, an attack that resulted in no injuries but was suspected to be the work of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Monday’s submarine transit seeks to deter Iran from taking further hostile action against the U.S. or American allies in the Middle East as retaliation for the January drone strike that killed Iranian General Qassem Suleimani and Iranian-aligned Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.
“There’s a major concern that as we approach the one-year anniversary of the drone strike that killed Suleimani and Muhandis, the Iranians and their regional proxies—especially in Iraq—won’t be able to resist the temptation to try and avenge their deaths with a major attack that, at the same time, lets them take a parting shot at President Trump,” said John Hannah, senior counselor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and former national security adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney.
The strategically important passageway separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula and transports about a fifth of the world’s oil supplies. By publicizing the passage of a naval submarine—armed with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles and escorted by two U.S. warships—the Navy said it was signaling to Iran its willingness to protect America’s regional allies and interests by unleashing the “full spectrum of capabilities to remain ready to defend against any threat at any time.” The Navy’s posturing also follows the Air Force’s flight of nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to the Persian Gulf last month.
Reports also emerged Monday that an Israeli Defense Forces submarine traversed the Suez Canal in an effort to deter Iranian retaliation for the killing of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.
“Recently, we have heard increased threats from Iran against the State of Israel,” IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kohavi said Monday. “The IDF will forcefully attack anyone who takes part, from near or far, in activities against the State of Israel or Israeli targets. I am saying this plainly and am describing the situation as it is—the response and all the plans have been prepared and practiced.”
“Through both their public statements and military deployments, Washington and Jerusalem are seeking to disabuse the Iranians of any idea that they will be able to harm U.S. or Israeli interests without suffering a very high price,” Hannah said. “They’re trying to make it clear that any benefit Iran thinks it could gain will be far outweighed by the military punishment that will be inflicted on it.”
In addition to serving as a deterrent, Egypt’s approval of Israel’s passage through the Suez Canal, which connects the Eastern Mediterranean to the Red Sea—and by extension, to the Persian Gulf—marks an important milestone in the geopolitical realignment of the Middle East.
“It reminds the Iranians that they are increasingly isolated in the region because of the strategic realignment that’s been underway for some time, but which the Trump administration—to its credit—capitalized on in brokering the accords between Bahrain, UAE, and Israel; and then more recently Morocco, Sudan, and Israel,” Eric Edelman, former U.S. ambassador to Turkey, told The Dispatch.
On the other side of the world, the USS John McCain “asserted navigational rights” through a Freedom of Navigation Operation (FONOP) in the South China Sea. Per a U.S. Navy statement, the transit of the U.S. destroyer sought to challenge “restrictions on the innocent passage imposed by China, Vietnam, and Taiwan”— each of which require permission or prior notification before foreign military vessels are permitted to move through the area.
“More than anything it is a reminder of the U.S.’ rejection of Chinese claims over the South China Sea and, more importantly, willingness to challenge them,” said Fred Rocafort, a legal expert on China and former diplomat. “As we have seen with other territorial disputes around the world, verbal opposition alone is unlikely to deter countries making forceful claims.”
Just as diplomacy isn’t the sole component of a successful foreign policy, neither is military posturing.
“Displays of force do not work as isolated tactics. But proponents of diplomacy must understand that rogue regimes only take diplomacy seriously if they face the threat of something worse to come,” Michael Rubin, an expert on Iran at the American Enterprise Institute, told The Dispatch. “The best way to ensure peace and stability is to show adversaries in Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing that they cannot walk all over the United States, its allies, or interfere with the right of passage in international waters.”
Is the collective ratcheting up of military exercises by the U.S. and allies part of a broader effort to deter adversaries amid the presidential transition, or merely a series of disconnected moves attuned to distinct regional demands?
In all likelihood, it’s the latter. “While there’s always concern that U.S. adversaries might try to take advantage of a transition between two administrations, this sort of aggressive signaling and effort to bolster deterrence is almost always driven more by specific events and intelligence-based threats,” Hannah said.
Worth Your Time
- In a counterintuitive and thoughtful piece for FiveThirtyEight, American Enterprise Institute research fellow Daniel Cox advocates for Republicans and Democrats arguing more, not less. “Most Americans avoid talking politics at family get-togethers … because they worry that political disagreements will ruin the holidays. But this is a mistake,” he writes. “At its heart, political disagreement is actually critical to a democracy, so when we’re able to have these kinds of disagreements with people we know and trust, like family, we should.” Cox notes that, “given the polarized era we live in, though, we find ourselves increasingly isolated from those we disagree with, and political disagreement is surprisingly rare.” But researchers have found that conversations across the political divide have societal benefits. “After just a few days of talking to people with different political beliefs,” Cox writes, pointing to a University of Chicago study, “participants expressed considerably more favorable views about their political opponents.”
- As more and more data from last month’s election trickles in, the post-election analyses are getting better and better. This one—from Amy Walter of the Cook Political Report—uses the outcome in battleground states in 2012 and 2020 to look ahead to 2024. “After every presidential election, we use the performance of the two major candidates as a way to assess which states will be in play for the next election,” she writes. “While each campaign is different—and each candidate brings his/her own unique coalition to the polls—it’s also true that some states are more elastic (have shown real change over the years), while others are more rigid. As the two parties think about making investments for the future, they will need to assess what kind of return they can get for their investments.”

Will Mike Pence defend the Constitution and the republic today?
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 05:04 AM PST Two of the biggest stories of this election cycle were overshadowed yesterday by the release of the COVID-19 relief package and the subsequent rebuke to it delivered by President Trump. While most were complaining about $600 checks and then rejoicing that President Trump called for much more, a significant constitutional pathway to correcting the election results was presented. Then, it was supported by the President himself. Vice President Mike Pence can play the “Pence Card” today. We’ve discussed this before, most notably with constitutional scholar Ivan Raiklin over two weeks ago. I’ve generally been lukewarm on the notion until a report from National File and the President’s second speech of the night yesterday made me more hopeful that it could actually happen. First, here’s the path described by National File: Pence can deny Electoral College certificates from states with widespread election fraud.FROM THE MEMO:
Pence must then notify the Secretary of State in each contested state that they have until January 6 to send a legal Electoral College certificate.FROM THE MEMO:
This is not an option for Pence. If he intends to follow the law from December 23 until January 6, he must instruct these states to remedy their Electoral College certificates.FROM THE MEMO:
The drafters of the memo also tell National File that, assuming the six contested states – Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada – do not remedy their Electoral College certificates by either selecting them in the Legislature or holding another election, President Trump will prevail in the Electoral College. Alone, this is interesting but not enough to compel me to believe it’s going to happen. Memos are passed around in the White House like face masks at a California grocery store. They often amount to very little other than intellectual fodder or thought experiments. But the President’s second speech last night was conspicuously timed just ahead of today, just ahead of crunch time for the Vice President. That may be coincidence, but if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that coincidences are rarely coincidental. Here’s the video Tweeted by the President:
This speech could have been delivered last week or even the week before. It could have been delivered after Christmas. Instead, it was delivered the day before Pence is scheduled to make decisions. Could this have been intended to lay out the administration’s case ahead of a blockbuster move by the Vice President? It’s all speculation until it does or does not happen. And as I’ve said on pretty much every podcast I’ve done for the past week or so, the easiest path through which we can put an end to the coup and make President Trump’s reelection official is through a “MOAB” – Mother Of All Bombshells. We’ve seen tons of evidence of voter fraud, statistical anomalies, and technological oddities to the point that most Trump supporters and at least 17% of Democrats believe the election was stolen for former Vice President Joe Biden. I’ve often argued that anyone who looks at the evidence and still concludes Biden received 12 million more votes than Barack Obama is a fool. The “MOAB” is the key to an elegant conclusion that sees President Trump victorious while also exposing many of those who participated in the coup attempt. Call it wishful thinking, but this is the path I’d pick if I had my druthers. But nothing has been easy in 2020 and if the “Pence Card” is our best play, then let’s play it. The nation’s future is at stake. Pence is as good of a man as there is in Washington DC. I do not doubt his motives. I do not doubt his character. I DO have some doubts about his courage. This would be the boldest move he’s ever made in his professional life, and he’s not one who’s known for taking chances. But as I’ve said for a while, it will be God’s will that moves this election one way or the other. If Pence is to be the vessel through which the end of the coup is realized, I trust that he’s up for the task. Today, Vice President Mike Pence can use his constitutional authority to set in motion the end of this coup attempt. Does he have the courage to act? If he abides by his oath of office, he MUST act. As a side note, we discussed this last night during an attempt to record a NOQ Report podcast. My audio was poor, so I did not upload it but it’s available on Facebook if you’d like to listen:
COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. We could use some help keeping this site afloat.Colleagues have called me the worst fundraiser ever. My skills are squarely rooted on the journalistic side of running a news outlet. Paying the bills has never been my forte, but we’ve survived. We have ads on the site that help, but since the site’s inception this has been a labor of love that otherwise doesn’t bring in the level of revenue necessary to justify it. When I left a nice, corporate career in 2017, I did so knowing I wouldn’t make nearly as much money. But what we do at NOQ Report to deliver the truth and fight the progressive mainstream media narrative that has plagued this nation is too important for me to sacrifice it for the sake of wealth. We know we’ll never make a ton of money this way, and we’re okay with that. Things have become harder with the coronavirus lockdowns. Both ad money and donations that have kept us afloat for a while have dropped dramatically. We thought we could weather the storm, but the resurgence of lockdowns that mainstream media and Democrats are pushing has put our prospects in jeopardy. In short, we are now in desperate need of financial assistance. The best way NOQ Report readers can help is to donate. Our Giving Fuel page makes it easy to donate one-time or monthly. Alternatively, you can donate through PayPal as well. We need approximately $17,300 to stay afloat through March when we hope the economy will be more open, but more would be wonderful and any amount that brings us closer to our goal is greatly appreciated. The second way to help is to become a partner. We’ve strongly considered seeking angel investors in the past but because we were paying the bills, it didn’t seem necessary. Now, we’re struggling to pay the bills. This shouldn’t be the case as our traffic the last year has been going up dramatically. June, 2018, we had 11,678 visitors. A year later in June, 2019, we were up to 116,194. In June, 2020, we had 614,192. In November, 2020, we hit 1.2 million visitors. We’re heading in the right direction and we believe we’re ready talk to patriotic investors who want to not only “get in on the action” but more importantly who want to help America hear the truth. Interested investors should contact me directly with the contact button above. As the world spirals towards radical progressivism, the need for truthful journalism has never been greater. But in these times, we need as many conservative media voices as possible. Please help keep NOQ Report going.
American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. The coronavirus crisis has prompted many, even some conservatives, to promote authoritarianism. It’s understandable to some extent now, but it must not be allowed to embed itself in American life. Will the President use a Pocket Veto on the stimulus bill?
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 03:07 AM PST President Trump wants more money for Americans and less money for foreign aid, lobbyists, and special interests, so he rejected the stimulus bill yesterday evening during a speech on the matter. Speculation is spreading that he may not officially veto the stimulus package, opting instead to simply not sign it. With Congress adjourning no later than 11:59 am on January 3rd, that means Congress has until today at noon to get the bill on the President’s desk to prevent a Pocket Veto. A president presented with a bill from Congress has 10 days, excluding Sundays, to sign or veto it. The exception is if Congress adjourns during that time period, in which case an unsigned and non-vetoed bill essentially disappears. The “Pocket Veto” time period happens to fall perfectly to run into adjournment IF they do not get the massive bill over to him by noon today.
There’s another issue, though. The government is currently funded through December 28. The COVID-19 relief package was part of the greater omnibus that included government funding through next September. If the President doesn’t sign it before the current seven-day stopgap expires, the government will shut down. Both Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi expressed a desire to technically give President Trump what he asked for during his speech last night. They both blamed Republicans for being the roadblocks to achieving a $2000 relief check for American citizens and said they would welcome an increase. But time is short. It is effectively impossible to “amend” the bill in time unless they can make quick changes and vote on it by unanimous consent. That’s not going to happen. Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar Tweeted a simple proposal: Give the people the $2000 in a standalone bill and deal with everything else separately. That may actually be the only option left for Capitol Hill unless they want to try to force the current bill onto the President’s desk before noon today and rush an override of his expected veto. Will Congress push the bill to the President before noon? Will the government shut down after December 28? Will Ilhan Omar be the surprising initiator of the President’s plan? So many questions. Redistribution of wealth? A crazy conspiracy theory come true
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 01:35 AM PST When the left mocks conservatives for calling out aspects of their agenda, people should pay attention. If Democrats and their allies in the activist media lambast people on the right who make accusations of a wish to take Americans’ guns, it’s because the progressive left really does want to take their guns. Article originally published at Liberty Nation. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio recently demonstrated that this principle is also applicable when it comes to the redistribution of wealth. Prominent leftists ridicule conservatives who point out their socialist tendencies, especially when it comes to economics. But it appears that much of the criticism leveled at the left is on point. DeBlasio Accidentally Spills The BeansMayor de Blasio said the quiet part out loud during a Dec. 18 press conference in which he discussed the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak. He said that the “COVID era has taught” him that “fighting disparities” should be a top priority:
Well, de Blasio at least earns points for honesty, right? The mayor continued: “We have been doing this work for seven years – to more equitably redistribute resources throughout our school system.”
Take Democrats At Their WordThe New York City mayor is not the only Democrat leader who has called for wealth redistribution. The concept has been championed by the likes of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and several others. In many cases, leftists conceal their redistributionist agenda by simply pushing for higher taxes on the rich or hiding it in pie-in-the-sky legislative proposals like the Green New Deal. But the objective is the same nonetheless: They wish to push the country further toward their vision of a Marxist utopia. ~ Read more from Jeff Charles. President Trump’s call for $2000 stimulus checks went against advisors: Report
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 01:18 AM PST Advisors to the President were against his pushback on the stimulus bill Congress sent him Tuesday as well as the video he delivered to America detailing what he wanted instead. He also panned requests to talk about it that night from Republican leadership, according to reporting by One America News reporter Jack Posobiec.
It would make sense that some advisors would push back knowing the adherence to The Swamp that is present in his administration. Despite his best efforts to fill the White House with loyalists, he has learned for the last four years that snakes worked their way in more often than not. The original bill, which passed by overwhelming majorities in both chambers, was loaded with pork that included several billion dollars in foreign aid and investments.
Several Republican lawmakers took to Twitter after the President’s speech to implore him to reconsider, but it’s almost certain he will not budge on his demands. Ironically, some of those on Capitol Hill who supported his calls for amendments were not among his most prolific supporters. Even Democrat Congresswoman Ilhan Omar called for a “clean” $2000 per individual bill with other considerations sent separately.
The goal of the bill, at least as it was portrayed by members of Capitol Hill, was to give much-needed economic stimulus to individuals and small businesses who have been financially decimated by COVID-19 lockdowns. As a new and more draconian round of lockdowns hits many areas across the country, the notion of receiving $600 per person while millions or even billions of tax dollars were distributed to congressional pet projects was not popular. For complete transparency, I oppose the stimulus plan altogether. Instead of getting more people dependent on government over a disease with such a high recovery rate, they should just open up the economy and let people get back to work. Problem solved. But if we must have a stimulus, it needs to be a clean one. Instead of pushing back on the President, it would behoove his advisors and Republican lawmakers to get on board with his stimulus plan. This is what populism looks like, and it will be appreciated widely by the people. COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Ilhan Omar makes most lucid proposal of her career as she sides with Trump on COVID-19 relief
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 01:02 AM PST Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a member of radical progressive “Squad” in the House of Representatives, posted an uncanny Tweet that agreed with President Trump’s requests. Earlier in the evening, the President had asked Congress in an address to America to cut out the special interest and foreign aid money from the so-called COVID-19 Relief Bill that drew scorn from across the political spectrum. Instead of $600 for Americans and billions to foreign and domestic special interests, the President called on $2000 per American and for money to be cut from congressional pet projects. Omar appeared to signal agreement in a proposal that… wait for it… makes sense.
To be clear, I’m personally against stimulus checks, period. Yes, I could definitely use one, but I’d much rather just get back to work. But if we have to have a stimulus, and Washington DC seems bent on forcing it down our throats, a clean stimulus is better than one loaded with so much pork. The degree of pork in the original bill Congress sent to the President was so ridiculous, it received general scorn from nearly everyone… including those who voted in favor of it. That’s not good legislation and it’s definitely not good economic policy. Thank God President Trump pulled back on signing it.
Ideally, we wouldn’t need a stimulus check since we should just be opening up the economy. If there must be stimulus, then let it be a clean stimulus. When Ilhan Omar and President Trump agree, 2020 has had its last laugh. Hopefully. COVID-19 lockdowns are taking down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Amistad Project says state legislators, not executive, need to certify presidential electors
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:49 AM PST A group has brought a lawsuit on Tuesday seeking to block the counting of electoral college votes from several contested states when Congress meets in a joint session on Jan. 6. Article originally published at The Epoch Times. The Amistad Project filed the lawsuit arguing that the state legislatures of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Arizona were prevented from exercising their power under the U.S. Constitution to certify the presidential electors’ votes cast on Dec. 14. The group claims that a number of federal and state laws had unconstitutionally delegated the authority of state legislatures to certify these votes to state executive branches. Under Article II of the U.S. Constitution, presidential electors must be appointed by each state in the manner prescribed by the state’s legislature. The group argues that the provision prevents state legislatures delegating their power to state executive branch officials as a ministerial duty. “There are textual and structural arguments for these state statutes being unconstitutional,” the group wrote in their lawsuit. They argue that the state laws are an “unconstitutional delegation of the state legislative prerogatives of post-election certifications of Presidential votes and of Presidential electors.” The lawsuit also argues that state legislatures, many of which are adjourned until January 2021, are also prevented to meet to perform their post-election certification duty. In order to conduct a special legislative session, a supermajority or a governor must agree that legislators should meet. However, the group said the governors from these states are preventing the state legislatures from doing so. “The very body that is responsible for how these electors are selected, can’t even meet after the election, up through January. So that’s unconstitutional, in that it’s a delegation of authority to a governor of a legislative function. That is not allowed,” Phill Kline, Director of the Amistad Project, told The Epoch Times’ American Thought Leaders. He added that state officials of some blue states have also been hostile to state legislators. He said the Michigan attorney general, Dana Nessel, had considered criminal investigations and prosecutions for legislators “who didn’t agree with her on the election result.” “That’s stunning to me. That type of intimidation and threat should never happen in America, from the state or chief law enforcement officer,” Kline, who was the former attorney general in Kansas, said. The defendants in the lawsuit include Vice President Mike Pence, Congress, and officials from the five battleground states. It was filed on behalf of voter rights organizations and voters from the five states. The lawsuit seeks to declare sections of federal and state laws that delegate the post-election certification power to state executives as unconstitutional. It also asks the court to prevent Pence, who will be counting the electoral college votes, and Congress from counting votes from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin until their state legislatures are able to meet to certify the votes. “Based on this legal background, Plaintiffs claim, under the Article II, that if there is no state legislative post-election certifications of Presidential votes and of Presidential electors in the Defendant States, then those Defendant States’ Presidential electors votes, not so certified, cannot be counted by the federal Defendants for President and Vice President under Article II,” the lawsuit states. This lawsuit comes as Republican lawmakers are weighing whether to launch a challenge to electoral college votes in contested states on Jan. 6. Several House members have vowed to launch challenges to prevent Congress from counting the slate of electoral votes for Democratic nominee Joe Biden in several contested states. Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) initiated the push when he announced his intention to object to the electoral votes come January. Since then, a growing number of Republican lawmakers have expressed their intention to object to the electoral votes during that session. So far, there have been no senators who have publicly committed to challenging a state’s results. A handful of Republican senators haven’t ruled out the possibility of objecting but have said that they would first monitor the developments regarding claims of voter fraud. Meanwhile, Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville (R.-Ala) has suggested that he may join the planned objection by members of the House of Representatives. The case is cited as Wisconsin Voters Alliance v. Pence (1:20-cv-03791). Jan Jekielek contributed to this report. Confirmed once again: Election fraud was ‘more than sufficient’ to change the results
Posted: 23 Dec 2020 12:45 AM PST In their goal post drag race, the national socialist left and media have gone from ‘No evidence of election fraud’ to it being supposedly dismissed in court [when in many cases these were on procedural grounds] to ‘it wasn’t enough to change the results’. As we have seen in other cases, a recent report from the Director of the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy detailed many examples where voting irregularities were “more than sufficient” to change the outcome. This really shouldn’t matter given that we have already made the case that the problem is that the left has shown a marked disdain for free and fair elections. As we noted, Scott Adams observed that the system was done the minute the left started kicking out election observers, keeping them away to prevent a fair evaluation of the count or simply blocking their view. We know from the video and the news reports that this was done. The only conclusion, being that the left no longer had an interest in a free and fair election. Even more compelling is the fact that their attitude is one of gaming the system to get away with whatever fraud was possible, whenever possible. They telegraphed this long before the election changing rules to enable voter fraud. While they did everything they could after the fact to dismiss any allegations as non-existent, unconsidered by the courts, or insufficient to change the results. We now know that all three talking points were false [or lies to blunt about it] given the mountain of evidence that has emerged over the past few weeks. The recent report simply confirms what we already knew:
It is important to understand that these reports are the ‘first draft of history’ and while the national socialist left has their own little propaganda effort. We need to keep on emphasizing the facts of our case against the outright lies of the left. President Trump rejects pork-filled stimulus bill
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 04:35 PM PST President Trump took to the airwaves to describe what was pumped into the so-called “COVID-19 Relief Bill” that Congress sent him last night. In it, he detailed multiple examples of legislative pork that Congress tried to ram down everyone’s throat. He concluded by saying he will not sign the bill unless it is tremendously amended. “The $900 billion package provides hard-working taxpayers with only $600 each in relief payments. and not enough money is given to small businesses, and in particular restaurants whose owners have suffered so grievously,” he said.
This is a strong move by the President who is also in the midst of a battle to correct the 2020 election that former Vice President Joe Biden is currently winning. But as efforts move forward at every level to expose voter fraud and bring a lawful and accurate result, the President himself is still working for the American people. “Congress found plenty of money for foreign countries, lobbyists, and special interests while sending the bare minimum to the American people who need it,” he said. “It wasn’t their fault. It was China’s fault.” The President has long blamed China in general and the Chinese Communist Party in particular for COVID-19. Their release and subsequent cover-up of the coronavirus led to a massive pandemic that spread across the world. It could have been avoided. President Trump concluded with his demands to Congress. “I am asking Congress to amend this bill and increase the ridiculously low $600 to $2000 or $4000 for a couple,” he said. “I am also asking Congress to immediately get rid of the wasteful and unnecessary items from this legislation and to send me a suitable bill, or else the next administration will have to deliver a COVID relief package, and maybe that administration will be me, and we will get it done.” Even as he fights for his political future against a coup attempt, President Trump is still doing what’s best for the American people. Congress has failed to do their jobs, but President Trump is holding their feet to the fire. Georgia senators declare that vote fraud in their state was part of a coordinated, illegal scheme to rig the election
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 01:19 PM PST While Democrats and their lapdogs in the media continue to dismiss credible claims of voter fraud, one state senator in Georgia knows otherwise. A recently released report examining the Nov. 3 election and its aftermath found that workers at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, home to the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks, engaged in illegal activities. Article originally published at Natural News. “The events at the State Farm Arena are particularly disturbing because they demonstrated intent on the part of election workers to exclude the public from viewing the counting of ballots, an intentional disregard for the law. The number of votes that could have been counted in that length of time was sufficient to change the results of the presidential election and the senatorial contests,” the report from state Senate’s Election Law Study Subcommittee chairman reads. “Furthermore, there appears to be coordinated illegal activities by election workers themselves who purposely placed fraudulent ballots into the final election totals,” it adds. Staffers at the arena were there to count ballots as they came in but, according to surveillance video along with witness testimony from Election Day, workers there stopped counting ballots around 10:30 p.m. (as did poll workers in other battleground states) but began counting again after poll watchers and media were dismissed from the room. That’s not legal under Georgia statutes. Naturally, the very compromised “Republican” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger pushed back against what millions of Americans have seen with their own eyes by now. “The report makes rash conclusions based on a one-sided presentation of conspiracy theories, poorly assembled data and conjecture. Of the many courts that have reviewed this same jumble of misinformation, none have found one shred of it to be credible,” Raffensperger’s office said in a statement to The Epoch Times. “It is disappointing that the members of the study committee let their political allegiance cloud their judgment when dispassionate analysis by the courts have determined the allegations to be nonsense,” it added. In fact, courts haven’t even considered the video evidence, let alone looked at it ‘dispassionately.’ In fact, one cowardly court after another has also rejected sworn witness testimony affirming the illegal actions taken at the arena. (Related: Election interference: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent $500 million to influence Democrat election officials and unlawfully change the election system.) But the denial gets even better — or worse, depending on how you look at it. Gabriel Sterling, an official who works in Raffensperger’s office, acknowledged an 82-minute period depicted in the video in which no elections monitors were present. But his office has nevertheless blamed the media and the observers for leaving — after the supervisor announced that the count was halting for the night. What else were they supposed to do? What else were they supposed to think other than the counting was halting for the night? The more appropriate question is: Why did counting continue afterward, which it clearly did in violation of state law? None of those votes should have counted, and every single one of the handful of workers who remained behind and counted ballots should be accountable for their very illegal acts. The Epoch Times notes further: The Georgia Election Law Study Subcommittee is part of the state Senate Judiciary Committee. According to subcommittee Chairman William Ligon, a Republican, the report hasn’t been formally approved by either the subcommittee or the committee. “As a member of the committee, the report was never shared with me,” Sen. Elena Parent, a Democrat on the subcommittee, told The Epoch Times. “There was no vote or consideration by the committee of the report. It doesn’t represent anything more than the Chairman’s take as a single legislator.” The theft of the election, stolen from President Donald Trump as a last resort because the deep state could not depose him in any other way, has been a smashing success — and it was done right under our noses. Americans who care about our institutions can never accept Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as legitimate. See more reporting like this at VoteFraud.news. Lt Gen Tom McInerney makes case for putting martial law back on the table
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 01:15 PM PST Today, The Two Mikes again had the honor of hosting Lt. General Thomas McInerney (USAF, Ret’d) for an update on the insurrection now being endured by the American people. The General briefly recapped what has happened to the republic since Election Day, and one again underscored how deeply threatened the republic’s survival is today. The idea of martial law must still be in play in the president’s planning, as must the possibility of declaring an insurrection. Overall our discussion brought forth the following four conclusions:
Those who resist arrest will be handled appropriately.

Boozman Secures Funding for Arkansas Priorities
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 10:54 PM PST
U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) is chairman of the Senate Appropriations Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies (MilCon-VA) subcommittee, secured provisions in the omnibus that stand to deliver benefits to the Natural State. “Congress has an obligation to fund the government. Passing the appropriations bills ensures we are investing in programs that support the needs of Americans. I’m proud to craft legislation that fully funds the VA MISSION Act and electronic health record modernization programs while supporting new initiatives to reduce and prevent veteran suicide,” Boozman said. “I’m pleased Congress approved resources for programs important to Arkansas.” Boozman authored the section of the bill that funds military construction and veterans affairs. He also secured resources for several Arkansas-related priorities:

The Biggest Political Blunder in American History
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 10:38 PM PST by Steve McCann: If courts and state legislatures award Joe Biden the presidency, the anti-Trump cabal, driven by a four-year single-minded obsession to defeat President Trump, will have committed the greatest political blunder in American history — the unabashed and overt theft of the 2020 presidential election. This myopic and oblivious group so misunderstood the depth and breadth of support for Donald Trump that their blatant manipulation of the election would fall monumentally short of the planned for and anticipated landslide defeat of the incumbent. A landslide they needed in order to dominate the political arena for the foreseeable future and avoid any backlash from the electorate for their duplicity. Thus, this cabal, which consists of the Democrat party establishment, Tech and Wall Street billionaires, the mainstream media, and left-wing elitists, will find itself in a quagmire of being unable to govern. The Democrat party’s dominant and radicalized left-wing base will revolt over failed promises and expectations while the extent of the fraud will inevitably be fully exposed, resulting in nearly half of the citizenry viewing the government as illegitimate. The unleashing of Covid-19 on the world by the Chinese Communists opened the door for massive voter fraud, primarily via mail-in ballots, to be introduced into traditional battleground states. Operating on the four-year premise that the destruction of President Trump justifies any means, the Democrat party establishment extra-constitutionally imposed changes to election laws in a number of states. At the same time, their cadre of co-conspirators was also mobilized. The social media oligarchs and the mainstream media controlled and blatantly censored the flow of information. The self-styled progressive billionaires, in violation of campaign laws, poured untold millions into so-called get out the vote campaigns. And the left-wing elites mobilized their army of foot soldiers to intimidate state and local politicians as well as state and federal judges in addition to being frontline participants in various statewide voter frauds. These conspirators smugly believed that they had successfully set up a scenario wherein Donald Trump would be defeated in such a massive landslide that a vast majority of the citizenry would never question the results. Further, Donald Trump would be so marginalized that his future as the leader of a growing political movement would be rendered moot as he slunk, tail between his legs, back to Mar-A-Lago. Thus leaving the political playing field in the hands of the established ruling class in near perpetuity. Instead, the worst-case scenario played out. The election came down to four battleground states, Wisconsin, Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania with a total margin for Joe Biden of 120,000 out of 18,600,000 legally or illegally cast votes or 0.6%. The question of fraud, despite the cowardice of the federal and state judiciaries, cannot be swept under the rug particularly as so many illegalities have already been exposed. Further, nearly half of all likely voters (75% of Republicans and 30% of Democrats) believe there was sufficient fraud in the election to ensure Biden won. Despite the best efforts of both social and mainstream media as well as the Democrat party hierarchy, that perception will never dramatically change, as in a recent poll just 56% of Americans say Biden is their president. Once in office, both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris would be viewed by a significant plurality of Americans as transparent frauds and imposters thanks to an unabashedly fraudulent election. A citizenry already consumed with contempt for the ruling class due to their ham-handed police-state tactics in dealing with the Chinese Coronavirus is now waking up to their duplicity and megalomania. Without the modicum of a mandate and open hostility towards a Biden/Harris Administration, there is very little the ruling class can do to enact their agenda with the specter of revenge in the 2022 mid-terms hanging over their heads. However, there is a more pressing issue that will impact the nation. The left-wing base of the Democrat party can rightfully claim that it was their grassroots efforts that pushed the Biden/Harris ticket over the top. Had there been the landslide all had anticipated and planned for, then the left would have had no choice but to be satisfied with the crumbs from the executive table as their role in the election fraud would be downplayed. But there will be no crumbs from the table, as many of the grandiose plans of the ruling class will have to be shelved. This will not sit well with the rank-and-file left-wing radicals as they will realize they were mere pawns in the lawless seizure of power by their nemeses. The billionaire class, the corporatists, and the ruling elites and their collective self-interest run counter to the Marxist/socialist ideology of the left. None of the promises made during the campaign season will be kept as these doctrinaire socialists and their leaders will be shunted to the side while their erstwhile allies focus on maintaining their stranglehold on the levers of power in the face of an aroused and determined opposition led by Donald Trump. In the spring and summer of 2020, the ruling class, in a marriage of convenience, tacitly allied themselves with another anti-Trump faction, the left’s uncontrollable militant militias, Antifa and Black Lives Matter. By their collective silence and capitulation in the face of ongoing riots, violence, intimidation, and looting, they conveyed to these self-styled revolutionaries that they are spineless and easily intimidated. When the radical left is ignored and marginalized by a Biden/Harris Administration and the frustration level reaches a boiling point, then these militants will again take to the streets in an even more violent manner. The bitter harvest of massive election fraud will be a government beset with an inability to govern, as it will have no goodwill with the bulk of the American people and a political base it cannot placate. The perpetrators of this fraud are predestined to fail as well as hasten the ultimate demise of the Democrat Party. The only issue outstanding is whether this nation will descend into chaos and bitterness as a result. The Assault On Faith, First Lee Then Lincoln, New Strain No Worries
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 10:10 PM PST
by Gary Evans: The Assault On Faith Donald Trump did not cause the divisions in America. Trump was elected by half of America because of the divisions. Our side chose him as a leader who would fight the left. Those divisions won’t go away if Trump leaves public life, which I hope and pray he will not do. While there are many fundamental issues that most Americans can agree on, it is the left that has come to despise much of what most Americans believe, especially on matters of faith. And the left won’t stop attacking those values. For example, we reported last week about a document that the Secular Democrats of America sent to the Biden transition team. This document calls for an all-out assault on the values most Americans cherish.
This is what we are fighting against, my friends. No matter what happens on January 20, the radical left’s assault on our cherished values will continue. First Lee, Then Lincoln But if you think about it, Northam actually shares a lot in common with Lee. Both abortion and slavery were built on the evil idea that whole classes of human beings – unborn children and black slaves – were not made in the image of God and were not people protected by our founding documents. Meanwhile on the Left Coast, a San Francisco high school named after Abraham Lincoln is being stripped of that name. It wasn’t that long ago when Donald Trump warned that attacks on statues of Robert E. Lee would lead to attacks on Washington and Jefferson. He was right. The left’s attack on America began with a weak point – the Confederate flag and other symbols of the Confederacy. But it has quickly turned into an attack on the American flag and on all of American history. The attack on Lee has turned into attacks on Lincoln, whose generals defeated Lee and the Confederacy. The left’s real target was always the Stars and Stripes and a place called America. Left-wing Hypocrisy What he really presided over was the production of a vaccine in record time, produced by capitalist companies that will benefit people all over the world! Incredibly, many of these same commentators also attacked President Trump for not getting the vaccine yet and for failing to set the example for the rest of the country. So Pence is wrong for getting the vaccine and Trump is wrong for not getting it. President Trump saw this coming. Back in the summer he said, “I’d take it first or I’d take it last. Either way I lose on that one.” Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who put sick patients in New York’s nursing homes, had the audacity to say that Santa will be very good to him because he’s worked so hard this year! New Strain, No Worries

Biden Should Beware of Nemesis
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 09:38 PM PST by Victor Davis Hanson: Former Vice President Joe Biden will be our next president. But he will face Nemesis in a way that few other presidents have ever encountered the cruel Greek god. Biden’s hubris and that of the media/Democratic Party fusion almost guarantee such divine retribution. Once the last of the other Democratic primary candidates dropped out and Biden was nominated, all prior negative media stories about his apparent cognitive decline and his family’s financial entanglements disappeared. From April 2020 on, a virtual news blackout surrounded Biden. His rare interviews were scripted. Biden communiques were teleprompted. Press conferences were either nonexistent or revolved around his favorite milkshake or his socks. Mentions of Hunter Biden‘s business dealings in China and Ukraine were taboo. It was sinful to reference reports of a Hunter Biden email allegedly detailing a 10% distribution of such revenue to the “Big Guy”—presumably Joe Biden. Unlike President Donald Trump, Joe Biden never really campaigned. After the primaries, he outsourced his fall 2020 campaign to subordinates and pet journalists to attack Trump. So is Biden the centrist old Joe from Scranton, or the recently reinvented hard-left running mate of Sen. Kamala Harris? Both or neither? Will he keep the booming pre-COVID-19 Trump economy to claim as his own? Or will he go full socialist to apply a Bernie Sanders-style makeover to it? A President Biden cannot avoid the press forever. He will soon face unscripted meetings with foreign leaders. He will have to meet dozens of movers and shakers each week. Is he or the nation prepared for the consequences of his return to normality after nearly a year of media fawning and forced isolation? To win, the Democrats knowingly drafted the 77-year old Biden (who has since turned 78) to put a familiar veneer on radical agendas that had frightened primary voters. At times, Democrats seemed fated to be directly tied to the statue toppling, protesting, rioting, and violence that plagued American cities for much of the summer. Given the Democrats’ Faustian bargain with their leftmost faction, destructive rumors about Biden’s faculties or his family’s financial escapades will more likely come from his own party’s left wing, eager for a Harris presidency, rather than from the Republican opposition. Biden will enter office with an ethical cloud hanging over his head—one that could have been vetted and adjudicated rather than blacked out for most of 2020. His son, brother, and perhaps family associates may talk if faced with FBI and IRS probes, if not a special counsel investigation. It will not help Biden that to defeat Trump, many of our institutions were deformed. Special counsels usually never receive a blank check—22 months and $32 million—to assemble a team of partisans to investigate a new president on mostly hearsay evidence and an opposition-concocted dossier. But that precedent ended with the ill-conceived Robert Mueller investigation. By spring, Biden could have done to him what was done to Trump—and what Biden himself so frequently cheered on. Nor do we impeach presidents often, especially knowing that the Senate will acquit them when there is no alleged crime, as outlined in the Constitution. That bar is also gone. Should the Republicans hold the Senate and take the House in 2022, they could do what the Democrats did in 2020. But if they were to impeach Biden as a possible beneficiary of his family’s foreign influence-peddling, a Republican-controlled Senate might not so easily acquit him. Biden variously called Trump supporters “ugly folk” and “chumps.” He compared the president to Joseph Goebbels, Adolf Hitler’s Nazi propagandist. Biden smeared Trump by referring to him as the nation’s first racist president. Half the nation will take some time to forget all that. The repair of warped protocols will take longer, given that the left forgot the ancient Thucydidean warning to us not to destroy the very institutions whose protections one day we may need. Biden should hope that a rogue FBI does not conduct freelance investigations of him the way it did to Trump. Let Biden pray there is not a partisan medical community to diagnose him as impaired and suited for 25th Amendment removal, as was the case with Trump. Biden should hope that if Republicans hold the Senate in January, they do not mimic the Democratic habit of voting against nearly every Trump nominee. If they were to do that as a majority party in both chambers of Congress, Biden would have trouble confirming even a single judge. So let us celebrate Biden’s call to unity. But Biden should hope that the opposition will not do to him and his party what the Democrats did so bitterly to Trump. Ill-Serving Minority Students
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 08:53 PM PST
by Bill Donohue: It is one of history’s greatest ironies: No segment of society punishes the poor more than those who champion their cause. This is true historically in nations claimed by Marxism, and in democratic nations today claimed by liberalism. Rhetoric aside, the left always screws the poor. The latest Marxist to do so, in a democratic country no less, is New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. De Blasio recently announced that the way to help the poor do better in school is to hike taxes on the rich. He said “our mission is to redistribute wealth” and to close the “COVID achievement gap.” The man is clueless. Owing to absurdly high taxes, the rich are leaving New York in droves; taxing them at an even higher rate will only encourage more to leave. They are taking their tax contributions and their jobs with them. Moreover, fleecing the rich will do absolutely nothing to enhance academic achievement. We have known for decades that there is no correlation between spending on students per capita and academic achievement. Of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, D.C. is #1 in spending per student and #51 in academic achievement. What makes for student success is the family, not the schools. Asians are “people of color,” yet they have no problem succeeding in school. That’s because, unlike African Americans, the typical Asian family has a father and a mother at home. So the “color” argument that de Blasio favors—structural racism is holding blacks back—is completely false. Black kids from two-parent families are not failing in school. The real issue is the family, not race. That said, it is not as though schools don’t matter at all, it’s just that they are of secondary importance. If de Blasio really wanted poor kids to succeed in school, he would spend money on charter schools, provide scholarships to private schools, endorse school choice, and allow the poor to enroll in Catholic schools. Instead, he fights every initiative that works. To top things off, he is the one who opens and shuts the schools like a madman, thus exacerbating the “COVID achievement gap” he claims to bemoan. Playing Robin Hood drives the rich out of New York, shrinks the tax base, and does nothing to help the poor succeed in school. De Blasio is a three time loser, all in the name of championing their cause. To share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. Lockdowns Are the Great Unequalizer
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 08:22 PM PST
by Stephen Moore: Democrats and their liberal economic advisers obsess about income inequality. Will someone please tell them that no act in modern times has widened the gap between the rich and the poor more than the lockdowns going on right now? Diane Yentel, the president and CEO of the leftist National Low Income Housing Coalition, said, “The majority of the up to 17 million households at risk of losing their homes this winter are people of color.” Politico reported that minorities and the poor have “been more vulnerable to job and income losses from the ensuing economic crisis, in large part because Black and Latino workers are over-represented in the service industries wiped out by shutdowns.” James Parrott, an economist at the New York City New School, said that what the United States is experiencing is “the most lopsided economic event imaginable.” The National Restaurant Association said that 40% to 50% of restaurants may go bankrupt in the months ahead if their stores don’t reopen immediately. Two of the U.S.’s most iconic restaurants, the 21 Club in Manhattan and the Cliff House in San Francisco, announced they had closed their doors permanently after nearly 100 years of business. As they die, so do hundreds of jobs in these cities. The workers out of work aren’t rich. Overall, 15 million middle-income people work for bars and restaurants. Even Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and arguably the planet’s richest man, complained that the lockdowns exacerbate inequality. With tens of billions of dollars of added profits, Amazon has been the world’s biggest beneficiary from locking down brick-and-mortar stores. For once, liberals are spot on. Lockdowns are crushing the little guy. Even so, it is the Democrats who are pushing this anti-freedom agenda. Here are the 10 states listed by The New York Times with the strictest lockdown orders: California, Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington. What do they have in common? Democratic governors. Liberals love to talk about following the science, but all evidence of the last nine months points to the scientific conclusion that lockdowns do not work to reduce deaths. Contact-tracing studies show that about half of those infected with the coronavirus got it despite staying at home. Only 2% of the transmission comes from restaurants, and almost none comes from outdoor dining, which is now idiotically prohibited in California. The states that have not locked down their economy have lower death rates than New York and New Jersey. The unemployment rate for service workers in these states has skyrocketed to as high as 10%. In contrast, the red states, such as Utah and Florida, that are still open for business have unemployment rates for service workers as low as 4%. Yet lockdowns are supported by politicians, university professors, journalists, technology executives, government employees, preachers, teacher unions and wealthy suburbanites. Their incomes are not in jeopardy. They won’t wait in lines for a meal. Would teachers support school closures if they weren’t getting a paycheck? How many people get tenure like six-figure salaried university professors who have been inoculated from the lockdowns they cheered on? I don’t see Yentel or many other “low-income advocates” protesting the lockdowns; do you? They think a government stimulus program of $1 trillion will solve the problems of the poor and the unemployed. Handouts are no substitutes for jobs and paychecks. Millions will fall through the cracks in any case. There is an old joke about a boy who kills his parents and then throws himself on the courts’ mercy because he is an orphan. The modern-day version of that story is liberals who have helped burn down the house and then piously complain about rising homelessness. Arthur Laffer, Walter Williams, Milton Friedman and so many other great economists have always warned us: The poor and minorities are the first victims of anti-growth and boneheaded public policies. Tragically, we are once again learning that lesson. So, why is the left all in for lockdown policies? These policies are doing just the opposite of what they preach: “rewarding wealth, not work.” Perhaps the answer is that the left cares a lot more about power than the poor. Can Democracy Hold Us Together?
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 08:09 PM PST by Patrick J. Buchanan: In announcing the $900 billion stimulus bill to deal with the pandemic, Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not mention that the gifts for her distressed countrymen and women at Christmas would have been twice as large had she taken President Trump’s offer of $1.8 trillion in October… Rather than let Donald Trump take credit, Pelosi stiffed millions of Americans. If America were a company and not a country, we would have long ago dissolved the corporation, split the blanket, and gone our separate ways. What still holds this disputatious and divided people together? Consider. In announcing the $900 billion stimulus bill to deal with the pandemic, Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not mention that the gifts for her distressed countrymen and women at Christmas would have been twice as large had she taken President Trump’s offer of $1.8 trillion in October. Why did the speaker slap that offer away? “The President only wants his name on a check to go out before Election Day and for the market to go up,” she told House Democrats. Rather than let Donald Trump take credit, Pelosi stiffed millions of Americans. Sunday, however, the speaker took time for a statement to hail the removal of Robert E. Lee’s statue from Statuary Hall. “Welcome news,” said the speaker. “Congress will continue our work to rid the Capitol of homages to hate.” Lee had stood in a place of honor in the Capitol for decades. When exactly did the statue of the general become a homage to hate? Both episodes point up an unpleasant truth. Our dysfunctional American family agrees upon less and less. By mid-November, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 52% of Republicans thought Donald Trump had “rightfully won.” Sixty-eight percent of Republicans thought the election was “rigged.” A third of independents, and even 10% of Democrats, agreed. This month, a Fox poll found that a third of all registered voters believe the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, with 78% of those who voted for Trump expressing that view. In the long term, not only is the election of 2020 going to be suspect. Also, belief in one of the sacraments of secular democracy, universal suffrage, is going to suffer. Moreover, the issues that divide us now go increasingly to the faith of what defines us as a nation and a people. A slice of our intellectual elite emphatically agrees with the New York Times’ Project 1619, which decrees that the real birth date of this nation was neither 1776 nor 1789, but the year that the first slave ship arrived in Virginia. To this influential cohort, enslavement of Black people brought from Africa and dispossession and destruction of the indigenous tribes that European settlers found here are the defining events of our history. And all who participated in these crimes against humanity or refused to condemn them are undeserving of exaltation. Not only Lee, but Columbus and Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Jackson, TR and Wilson are all racist white men whose disgraceful and even criminal conduct disqualifies them from a place of honor in the American pantheon of 2020. All statues of such men need to come down to cleanse us of the stain of having honored them. Pelosi says that such statues are “homages to hate.” She may not have thought so five or 10 years ago, but she believes that now. What has taken place is a mass conversion. Yet, there is another America that still cherishes the nation these men created. And, as did their fathers, grandfathers and ancestors, these Americans have shown a willingness to fight and die in her defense. Thus do we Americans disagree on the most fundamental of issues. Was America, is America, with all its sins and virtues and all its achievements, a country to be cherished, loved and defended? Or is America a country of whose history we should all be ashamed? Part of America also believes that discovery in the Constitution of a woman’s right to an abortion and a right of homosexuals to marry were major milestones of progress toward a more moral America. Others see these as long strides away from the Christian country we used to be, a social and moral decline toward the same quiet death that has come to other civilizations and nations that went before us. In short, we Americans disagree on whether our country is a good and great nation worth defending, or a place that needs a deep cultural cleansing of its sins. And we have no common code of morality. One side is rooted in modernism and secularism and the other in the teachings of the Old and New Testament, Christian tradition and a natural law written on the human heart that is superior to man-made law. People who disagree upon such basic beliefs naturally drift apart, as we Americans are doing today. Political questions arise out of these fundamental differences, and they are not insignificant. Can a republic as fractured and splintered as ours is — racially, ethnically, politically, culturally, morally — with a population who do not share the same belief about whether their nation is good and great or failed and evil, endure? And for how long? What successful models from history do we see of nations that took the kind of risks we are taking with our republic? Congressional Unity on Spending Blowout
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 07:54 PM PST $2.3 trillion, 5,600 pages, and six hours. If this is bipartisanship, who needs it?
by Nate Jackson: “This action in the lame-duck session is just the beginning,” proclaimed Joe Biden. “Our work is far from over.” He was talking about both houses of Congress passing on Monday the $900 billion COVID relief package, combined with a $1.4 trillion omnibus bill to fund government agencies through September. The government can shut down your business, but heaven forbid the government stop spending money. And Biden isn’t done yet, saying earlier this month, “I’m going to ask for more.”COVID relief contains a number of provisions, but the three primary pillars are an extension of the Paycheck Protection Program of loans for small business, a $300 boost to unemployment checks, and another round of individual payments (this time $600 per person) for most Americans (individuals earning $75,000 or less, and married couples filing jointly earning $150,000, plus $600 per dependent child). But the package also includes billions more in rental assistance, bailouts for movie theaters and schools, child care, and so much more. The package is far smaller than Congress’s last COVID spending spree of $2.2 trillion in March. And it’s less than a third of what Nancy Pelosi spent eight months demanding after the House passed another $3.4 trillion in May, followed by $2.2 trillion in October, neither of which was taken up by the Senate. Why is she okay with less money now? “Because we have a new president,” she explained recently.Higher unemployment benefits are an incentive to stay unemployed. That hasn’t changed. Moreover, according to The Heritage Foundation, “While the impulse to preserve jobs is understandable, the Paycheck Protection Program cost over $100,000 per job saved based on several studies. Worse, the program was not properly targeted, creating inequalities between businesses. These loans also make it easier for state and local governments to justify overly restrictive lockdowns.” That’s just one issue Heritage finds with this spending bill. The much larger problem, however, continues to be runaway federal debt made worse by pandemic panic. Clearly, neither party really cares about the debt, and most voters just don’t want their own favorite programs cut. But at some point, $27.5 trillion in federal debt is going to cause disaster of its own.Don’t miss the fact that government is spending your money to fix what government broke. “Stay at home,” bureaucrats say. “But here’s more money to spend when you go out,” they also say. “And here’s some money for the businesses we closed.”Your elected representatives at work. How long did members of Congress have to consider this 5,600-page behemoth? About six hours. That didn’t sit well with Senator Ted Cruz, for one, who complained, “It’s ABSURD to have a $2.5 trillion spending bill negotiated in secret and then — hours later — demand an up-or-down vote on a bill nobody has had time to read.” South Carolina Republican Ralph Norman likewise called it “awful governance, and a disservice to the American people.” What about the massive deficit spending? Senator Rand Paul tore into that, saying, “If money really did grow on trees, why not give more free money? Why not give it out all the time? Why stop at $600 a person? Why not $1,000? Why not $2,000? Maybe these new Free-Money Republicans should join the Everybody-Gets-A-Guaranteed-Income Caucus. Why not $20,000 a year for everybody? Why not $30,000? If we can print out money with impunity, why not do it?” The Senate vote was 92-6, with just six Republicans opposed: Rick Scott (FL), Mike Lee (UT), Marsha Blackburn (TN), Ted Cruz (TX), and Ron Johnson (WI). The House vote was 359-53, including 50 GOP “nays.” There’s no doubt that millions of Americans are hurting financially. Even if some aren’t “hurting,” they can still use the extra cash this Christmas. But the outrageous reality is that government has grossly mismanaged this pandemic at virtually every level, and now government is coming to the “rescue” with the money of taxpayers not yet even born. The people getting the most relief are the DC politicians who can pat themselves on the back in fundraising appeals to their constituents. Evicting Unjust Evictions
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 07:34 PM PST by Paul Jacob, Contributing Author: Good news: New York City businessmen can no longer be threatened with eviction and forced to forfeit their rights for the crime of . . . well, for no crime at all. Sung Cho, owner of a Manhattan laundromat, is one of many victims of an eviction-and-extortion racket perpetrated by the city. For years, business owners have faced eviction because of offenses that occurred on the premises of their business — even if the owner was ignorant of the alleged offenses before they were committed. In 2013, police entered Cho’s laundromat to sell supposedly stolen goods. After a couple of people unconnected to the business accepted the offer, the NYPD threatened Cho with eviction. Even though neither Cho nor his employees were accused of doing anything illegal. Cho felt he had no alternative but to waive his right not to be subjected to warrantless searches, and grant police access to his security cameras, and forfeit his right to a hearing if ever penalized for alleged criminal offenses in the future. To avoid eviction, he accepted those obnoxious terms. But he didn’t leave it there. In 2016, Sung Cho teamed up with the Institute for Justice to sue the city. After many ups and downs, the final result is that the law so often used as a club against innocent business owners has been changed. Also, the NYPD must obey a binding order that it “shall not enforce or seek to enforce” the terms of agreements imposed under the old law. A big win for lots of small businesses against tyrannical actions by government. This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob. Bill Barr Still Covers for the CIA
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 07:10 PM PST by Cliff Kincaid: As Bill Barr is walking out the door of the Department of Justice to open presents on Christmas day, Kimberley A. Strassel of the Wall Street Journal tells us that he is an honest and upstanding Attorney General who believes there was no CIA role in the effort to bring down President Trump. Barr, a former CIA analyst, had come to the conclusion that he didn’t “see any sign of improper CIA activity” and that “The CIA stayed in its lane.” This is comparable to Joe Biden saying there’s nothing in his son’s laptop worth seeing. The CIA did not stay in its lane. The driver was drunk and the agency swerved all over the road in an attempt to take out Trump. Former CIA officials Michael Morell, Michael Hayden, and Philip Mudd had all denounced Trump when he ran in 2016. Former CIA operations officer Evan McMullin even ran against him as an independent presidential candidate. What’s more, the list of those denouncing consideration of Hunter Biden’s laptop revelations prior to the election was dominated by the CIA. (See the list of CIA signers at the end of this column). Their letter was used by Joe Biden during the campaign to suggest the laptop story was a Russian plot. What does the CIA have to hide? Our 2015 book The Sword of Revolution and the Communist Apocalypse features an interview with a former U.S. intelligence agency official who explained how the Sino-Soviet split deceived U.S. policymakers and weakened the Free World. His perspective was a dissenting view in the CIA and intelligence community bureaucracy. Such thinking is evident in media stories about the “accidental” nature of where and how the China virus came to be. You are not permitted to believe that the Communist Chinese would deliberately infect the world. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in April that the Intelligence Community “concurs with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not manmade or genetically modified.” Our intelligence agencies have gotten it wrong before. Did they get this one wrong, too? Or did they get it wrong deliberately because they are compromised by the Chinese? Strassel is the latest “conservative” media figure to fall for Barr’s nonsense. She also wrote a May 18, 2017, column about the appointment of Russia-gate prosecutor Robert S. Mueller, saying the former FBI director was “as skilled and upright as they come” and insisted that his name comes associated with such words as “integrity, honor, respect, order, discipline, honesty, fairness.” She added that “nobody doubts Mr. Mueller will lead as professional an investigation as he is capable of conducting.” Another dupe, unfortunately, was Mark Levin, who gave Barr a platform on his show to spout nonsense while failing to get to the bottom of Obama-gate. Barr ruled out prosecuting Obama and/or his vice president Joe Biden for a criminal conspiracy to destroy the Trump presidency. Barr did appoint a special counsel to look into Obama-gate, but there’s nothing to report here, either, except for a low-level FBI fall guy. Barr dropped the Flynn case and made occasional statements about how Russia-gate prosecutor Robert Mueller had gone too far. He also made grunts and groans about missteps by the Deep State, especially on Mark Levin’s program. Basically, his message was that the Deep State was a little sloppy. But there’s more. Barr “makes no apology for declining to divulge before the election that Hunter Biden was under investigation,” Strassel reports in her column. In other words, he covered up for China Joe and his family. Now why would he suppress that news? Perhaps because his former colleagues in the CIA were telling him that the Hunter Biden laptop emails were part of a Russian plot. “From 1973 to 1977,” says his official bio, “[Barr] served in the Central Intelligence Agency before receiving his J.D. with highest honors from George Washington University Law School in 1977.” I am not sure what “served” means. I would change it to present tense “serves.” The New York Times trumpeted the news that Barr told Strassel that the CIA was cleared in Russia-gate. It said, “The Justice Department’s examination of the investigations into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election has cleared the C.I.A. of suspicions that it targeted President Trump and his associates, Attorney General William P. Barr said in an interview published on Friday.” The phrase “The CIA stayed in its lane” is now part of the history of Russia-gate, despite evidence to the contrary. The Federalist reported before the election that CIA Director Gina Haspel is “personally blocking the declassification and release” of key Russia-gate documents in the hopes that President Donald Trump will lose his re-election bid and because they “could embarrass the CIA and potentially even implicate Haspel herself.” “Haspel has repeatedly lied to the president about the status of documents to be declassified,” one intelligence community source told the publication. When Trump nominated Haspel for the position, the White House said she had “gained widespread support from former intelligence and national security officials,” many of whom opposed Trump. The White House cited these “facts,” among others:
The White House was trying to feed the beast, to appease the Deep State. The CIA returned the favor by branding the incriminating Hunter Biden laptop emails as a Russian plot. And Barr has the audacity to say the agency “stayed in its lane.” Let’s take a look at the admitted CIA names on the list of those denouncing consideration of Hunter Biden’s laptop revelations prior to the election (Remember that they signed a letter for Joe Biden suggesting the laptop story was a Russian plot):
n addition, reported the letter signers, there were “nine additional former IC [Intelligence Community] officers who cannot be named publicly” who “also support the arguments in this letter.” Remember, these CIA and Intelligence Community people signed a letter designed to usher China Joe Biden into the White House by claiming that the story of the Hunter Biden laptop emails, suppressed by Big Tech, had “all the classic earmarks of a Russian information operation.” Using Wall Street Journal columnist Strassel as a mouthpiece, Bill Barr says the CIA stayed in its lane. If true, that’s frightening. It means they’re trying to bring to power a pawn of the Communist Chinese. Trump must resist by any means necessary. One more Art of the Deal as Congress Completes Covid Economic Relief in spite of Pelosi
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 06:40 PM PST by Robert Romano: Congress has completed negotiation on a combined $900 billion Covid economic relief legislation, plus the annual $1.4 trillion omnibus appropriations bill, just in time for Christmas. It comes with a $280 billion renewal of the Paycheck Protection Program that saved as many as 5.2 million small businesses and 50 million jobs last spring. Another $16 billion for airlines and critical industries, another round of $600 checks plus a $600 child tax credit, and an extension of unemployment benefits with a $300-addon to regular benefits are also included. It also includes $20 billion for vaccine purchases, $8 billion for vaccine distribution and another $20 billion for more Covid testing — all as the Food and Drug Administration has already approved two Covid vaccines on an emergency basis. Obviously, it is not perfect, but it appears better than it was just a few weeks ago. For starters, there is no state and local government bailout. Democrats wanted as much as $875 billion to balance state budgets in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) now-abandoned $3 trillion spending proposal earlier this year. Which, without some requirement that states actually use funds to reopen their economies was always a non-starter for Republicans. The bill still includes $82 billion for schools to safely reopen in the era of Covid — which if you want to reopen the economy, safely returning millions of children to school so working parents can get back to work is an obvious precursor — mirroring prior proposals by both House Democrats and Senate Republicans. That will technically go to states. In fact, other than the removal of Covid liability protection for businesses — the cost of removing the states bailout — the agreed-upon legislation most closely resembles the $900 billion proposal originally submitted by Senate Republicans, the HEALS Act, earlier this year. One aspect of the Covid package people have not paid attention to is the issue of surprise medical billing and that it deals with it in a way that does not create one size fits all medical bill rate setting by the federal government. While the compromise language is not perfect it does incorporate an arbitration process between providers and health insurers, rather than the pathway to socialized medicine House Speaker Nancy Pelosi preferred. And it may not even cost the full $900 billion, with much of the cost being covered by prior unspent monies. According to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), in a floor speech on Dec. 21, the figure is closer to $350 billion: “I cited a figure of $900 billion. But listen to this: The net new cost is less than roughly $350 billion. We are recovering more than half a trillion dollars in unspent money that Congress had already set aside and channeling it to these urgent needs.” McConnell went on to tout the provisions of the bill, stating a primary focus for Senate Republicans was to save small businesses by renewing the Paycheck Protection Program: “Back in March, thanks to Chairman Rubio, Senator Collins, and Senator Cardin, we created the Paycheck Protection Program. It’s saved small businesses and helped millions of American workers keep receiving paychecks rather than pink slips. It would be insanity for us to have saved these jobs all this time only to drop the ball with the end in sight. So this bill will send more than $280 billion to re-open the PPP for a targeted second round. And we made sure churches and faith-based organizations will stay eligible.” McConnell added, “Of course, millions have already been laid off. So, months after Republicans tried to stop benefits from expiring in the first place, this package will resume a temporary federal supplement to unemployment insurance. And it extends other programs for self-employed and gig workers that would have expired.” McConnell also thanked President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for their leadership in pushing for more relief checks: “Thanks to the particular leadership and direction of President Trump and Secretary Mnuchin, households will receive a second round of direct relief checks — $600 per adult and per child.” That is one more Art of the Deal for President Trump, who simultaneously moved mountains to get America as much Covid testing, ventilators and then vaccines and treatments with Operation Warp Speed, and to get the American economy safely reopened. When labor markets bottomed in April, 25 million jobs had been lost, but thanks to Trump’s leadership, more than 16 million jobs were recovered in a very short period of time, and the country was fully prepared to meet the pandemic head-on. Thank goodness. McConnell took a no-nonsense look at the legislative accomplishment: “This is just some of the aid that will be heading Americans’ way in a matter of hours. No sprawling left-wing wish list. No unconstrained bailouts for state and local governments, with no connection to COVID needs. Just smart, targeted, bipartisan policies.” In contrast to Pelosi’s sprawling, original $3 trillion proposal, this is not bad. It could have been horrible, but this is not bad at all. Pelosi should have passed something before the election when she had the chance, as failure to act nearly cost Democrats the House majority in 2020 because of it. Small business funding expired Aug. 8. Airline funding ran out in September. Unemployment benefits ran out in some cases months ago. Now what do they have to show for it? Adding to Pelosi’s losses, because the $1.4 trillion omnibus bill is passing right now — its gargantuan price tag notwithstanding, that’s what happens when you wait to the last minute to pass the entire federal budget — that means there won’t be any must-pass funding bills the first few months of 2021 for Pelosi to hold the American people hostage with to demand more states bailouts. Merry Christmas. When Black Lives Matter Means Profiting from African Child Slavery
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 06:23 PM PST by Daniel Greenfield: It was a cold December day in Washington D.C. and Neal Katyal, Obama’s Solicitor General, was arguing with Justice Clarence Thomas, the great-grandson of a freed slave, about slavery. Katyal was representing Nestle, the American subsidiary of a Swiss multinational, being sued by freed African child slaves for profiting from slavery, and Justice Thomas wasn’t having it. The two men, the consummate Democrat legal operative, who had been there for Bush v. Gore and defended ObamaCare before the Supreme Court, and the court’s only black justice descended from slaves, debated corporate liability for child slavery for a social justice company. Nestle USA had responded to the Black Lives Matter race riots with “mandatory unconscious bias training” for its employees before going on to defend the company’s cocoa business from a lawsuit by freed child slaves who had been forced to work on plantations between the ages of 12 and 14, and were brutally beaten when they tried to escape. The leadership of Nestle’s UK branch had urged, “I want people talking about race, about inequality and about why it should ever be called into question that black lives matter.” Nestle’s version of black lives mattering allegedly meant African child slaves working fourteen hours a day on cocoa plantations, given “scraps of food to eat”, “beaten with whips and tree branches”, “forced to sleep on the floor”, and to “drink urine” if they tried to run away. Coca Cola, which met the BLM riots by pouring money into black nationalist groups and rolling out a, “Together We Must” slogan, joined in the defense of Nestle by filing its own brief. Coke was also recently caught lobbying against a bill that would crack down on slave labor in China. lack Lives Matter means Obama’s former lawyer lecturing a descendant of freed slaves about immunity for African child slavery and a corporation forcing its employees into humiliating critical race theory struggle sessions while benefiting from slavery, not in 1619, but now. Katyal’s defense of Nestle depended, among other things, on Nazi gas chambers. Nestle’s Supreme Court brief argues that, “even the firm that supplied Zyklon B gas, which the Nazis used to kill millions, was not indicted.” That’s fortunate for Nestle which didn’t make Zyklon B, but did pay out $14.6 million over the use of Jewish slave labor during the Holocaust. “As the legal successor of such corporations, Nestle nevertheless accepts its moral responsibility to help alleviate human suffering,” Nestle declared in a statement. That’s big of Nestle, which had helped finance the Swiss Nazi Party and became an exclusive supplier of chocolate to the Wermacht. Helmut Maucher, Nestle’s longtime CEO and honorary chairman, had served in the Wehrmacht. But that’s all water under the national socialist bridge. Nestle went from profiting from Jewish slave labor it claimed it couldn’t do anything about to profiting from African slave labor it claims it can’t stop. But Obama’s lawyer, who’s being touted for a position with Biden, is an even better story. The Supreme Court brief on behalf of the former slaves notes that a study “conducted by Tulane University and funded by the U.S. Department of Labor found that the total number of children engaging in cocoa production, child labor, and hazardous work in cocoagrowing areas in West Africa increased more than thirty-eight percent from 2008–2009 to 2013–2014.” Those dates overlap with the glory days of Katyal’s former boss: Barack Hussein Obama. Why would child slavery have dramatically increased under Obama? The slaves in the Nestle case were trafficked from Mali to Côte d’Ivoire, the country at the center of the cocoa business and child slavery, which underwent a Muslim-Christian civil war in Obama’s first years in office. When Muslim rebels, many of them illegal migrants, rigged the 2010 election, Obama backed the Muslim north over the Christian south. The French and the UN intervened militarily to subjugate the indigenous Christians to Muslim rule. Since then, Alassane Ouattara, a descendant of Muslim rulers, dubiously won the latest presidential election by 83%. And Côte d’Ivoire is slowly being Islamized and is turning into a slave nation. Côte d’Ivoire’s indigenous population was concentrated in the richer forests of the south, allowing the migration of Islamic tribes to occupy the drier north. Cocoa is the black gold of the Ivory Coast with most of the economy being geared around exporting the lucrative crop. Allowing the Muslim forces to take over Côte d’Ivoire was just a brief interlude for Obama before launching the Arab Spring, and invading and removing Libya’s ruler. The resulting war allowed the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Qaeda and later ISIS to gain a foothold in Libya. Tuareg Islamists, who still held a grudge over losing their slaves, invaded Mali and brutally imposed Islamic law. The Tuaregs were among the few to still maintain a very public trade in slaves. A State Department report from last year found that black slavery was still rife among the Tuaregs and that, “Malian children endure forced labor on cotton and cocoa farms in Cote d’Ivoire”. The freed slaves at the center of the Supreme Court lawsuit had originally been trafficked from Mali. Cote d’Ivoire’s boom in cocoa production was built around slave labor under brutal conditions. The beneficiaries of that slave labor are the multinationals who preach social justice, as long as it doesn’t raise the price of cocoa. It’s one thing to chant Black Lives Matter and support the racist hate group burning and looting stores, and another to actually stop profiting from black children being sold into slavery for $60 and then watching them being tortured and beaten. According to the allegations in the lawsuit, Nestle dispensed “personal spending money to maintain farmers’ loyalty as exclusive suppliers” to the men running the slave plantations. But this nightmare was put into place by the former boss of the lawyer shilling for Nestle. The fallout from the Arab Spring had devastated Africa. The Middle East was better able to correct some of the damage from Obama’s empowerment of Islamists. Africa, poorer and more wounded, suffered far more. Obama’s backing for Islamist takeovers in Cote d’Ivoire, Libya, and Nigeria was little short of genocide, and, among its other effects, led to a boom in slavery. Obama had done more than any other politicians to mainstream both black nationalism and black slavery. That’s only a paradox for those who don’t remember Malcolm X admiring Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi who brought back slavery, before heading to Sudan to embrace its Islamists, or Stokely Carmichael shilling for brutal Muslim dictator Ahmed Toure. America’s black nationalists don’t admire democracy or freedom. They reserve their veneration for strongmen and thugs. And the regimes they admire oppress and kill other black people. Black nationalism has a way of ending in Islamist rule and the enslavement of black people. While Black Lives Matter leaders get cash from woke corporations, those same corporations profit from slavery in Asia, where lives don’t matter, but also in Africa, where they supposedly do. While the Times serve up the 1619 Project, and the statues of anyone who ever had anything to do with a slave centuries ago are toppled, real African slavery continues today. And it goes on much the same way it always had. It just no longer takes place in America. America was never built on slavery, but woke corporations, from Nike to Apple, from Coca Cola to Nestle, who force their employees to chant, “Black Lives Matter”, are built on slavery. Their commitments to social justice, to equity and BLM, are a distraction from the real slavery. The Bill Of Rights’ Freedom Of Expression — An Endangered Species?
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 06:01 PM PST by Gary M. Galles: Dec. 15 marked the anniversary of the Bill of Rights. Of those rights, the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of speech is perhaps the most celebrated. There is a good reason. After surviving a critical test from the Sedition Act of 1798, which tried to muzzle political opposition by making it illegal to “combine or conspire together, with intent to oppose any measure or measures of the government,” our freedom to express ourselves made America a place where people could openly criticize those in government power without ending up in jail, or worse. This is in contrast to many other countries. This freedom to criticize government led to a typically American form of humor, where the threat of public embarrassment is used to keep political representatives in their place. For example, consider what some of America’s favorite humorists have said. Groucho Marx: “Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it, and then misapplying the wrong remedies.” “Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I repeat myself.” “It could probably be shown by facts and figures that there is no distinctly native criminal class except Congress.” Will Rogers: “If you make any money, the government shoves you in the creek once a year with it in your pockets, and all that don’t get wet you can keep.” “On account of us being a democracy and run by the people, we are the only nation on earth that has to keep a government four years, no matter what it does.” “There’s no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.” “Be thankful we’re not getting all the government we’re paying for.” P.J. O’Rourke: “The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass from your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn’t work and then they get elected and prove it.” Subjecting government to deserved satire also extends beyond America’s humorists. Politicians have also noted some of the excesses and inadequacies of government, observed at close range. Thomas Jefferson: “If we were directed from Washington when to sow and when to reap, we should all want bread.” Ronald Reagan: “Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.” Daniel Patrick Moynihan: “The single most exciting thing you encounter in government is competence, because it is so rare.” Many other Americans, famous or not, also have made contributions to the chorus. Henry Adams: “Practical politics consists in ignoring facts.” Ambrose Bierce: “In our civilization, and under our republican form of government, intelligence is so highly honored that it is rewarded by exemption from office.” Milton Friedman: “Nothing is so permanent as a temporary government program.” H.L. Mencken: “If a politician found he had cannibals among his constituents, he would promise them missionaries for dinner.” Bob Wells: “For every action there is an equal and opposite government program.” Humor is often an effective way to protest government abuse, highlight the lack of logic behind government pronouncements and programs, expose government corruption and deflate “public servants” grown self-important. And America’s sense of humor can help defend liberty by resisting unjustified encroachments by our government. But our just completed election has revealed massive limits on our freedom to express ourselves in the public square. Large areas of discourse, humorous as well as deadly serious, have been curtailed. And that curtailment was largely to protect our apparent next chief executive. So it is particularly important to remember and celebrate that our Bill of Rights included our freedom to satirize our government in the First Amendment. To the extent our freedoms of expression are becoming more of an endangered species, it makes us less free now, and threatens to do even more of the same in the future. Tags: Gary M. 9 Things You Need to Know About the $1.4 Trillion Fiscal Year 2021 Omnibus and $900 Billion COVID-19 Package
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 05:26 PM PST Matthew Dickerson & David Ditch: Congressional leaders introduced on Monday a fiscal year 2021 omnibus appropriations bill that would provide $1.4 trillion in spending for government agencies as well as a variety of unrelated legislative provisions. Also included is another COVID-19 relief “stimulus” package, this one costing taxpayers nearly $1 trillion. Congressional leaders have the enormous and oftentimes difficult responsibility of choosing the best policy decisions to present to their peers. This is a challenge under normal circumstances—even more so when they have to decide on a bundle of policy decisions, and under a tight deadline. This was abundantly clear with Monday’s appropriations package. While the bill includes some positive provisions, it fails to meet the needs of the country in other significant respects. Here are nine things you need to know about Monday’s omnibus package, which was passed by the House and Senate. 1. It Was Developed Behind Closed Doors in the 11th Hour While signing the fiscal year 2018 omnibus spending bill, President Donald Trump warned Congress: “I will never sign another bill like this again. I’m not going to do it again. Nobody read it. It’s only hours old. Some people don’t even know what is in—$1.3 trillion—it’s the second largest ever.” For the next two years, Congress heeded the president’s warning, breaking the full-year spending bills into multiple packages. The agreement for the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019 stated that: This massive omnibus package was written behind closed doors by a select few members of Congress and staffers, just before the deadline. As described by Politico, “Congressional leaders are preparing the second-largest federal rescue package in our nation’s history, and no one has seen it just days before it will get a vote. All of the power is centralized among four people and their aides.” There is simply no way for members of Congress and the American public to fully comprehend the potential impacts of the numerous, significant policy provisions and spending that is included in the bill. Members of Congress only have hours to review and understand 5,593 pages of complex legislative text and nearly 2,000 pages of explanatory materials—working around the clock from the time the bill and materials were made publicly available to the public until 1:46 p.m. Monday afternoon, just hours prior to the vote. Even if a member attempted to read and understand the legislation, it would not be physically possible. Congress has rules that are meant to prevent situations like this, such as the House’s “72-hour rule” and restrictions on legislative provisions being included on appropriations bills that are a part of the rules in both the House and the Senate. However, it may come as no surprise that the rules are selectively enforced. The disappointing process has led to what is largely a disappointing piece of legislation. 2. The Nondefense Spending Levels Are Inflated and Gimmicked While this does not come as a surprise, that does not mean the spending level is appropriate. Instead, it demonstrates a refusal by members of Congress to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. The 2019 spending deal significantly increased defense and nondefense spending by a total of $153 billion above the fiscal year 2021 caps originally set by the Budget Control Act of 2011. Worse, legislators are using accounting gimmicks to further inflate the amount of nondefense spending. The most important of these has to do with Changes in Mandatory Programs, or CHIMPs. This gimmick allows fake “savings” in mandatory programs, such as moving a payment from one year to the next, to offset more discretionary spending within the caps. A “Democratic source” actually bragged that the gimmick “won’t actually result in meaningful spending cuts.” This year will see a big increase in the CHIMPs gimmick, and appallingly enough, this is done for the sake of spending that Congress should be able to properly budget for: veterans care. Specifically, a 2018 expansion of health benefits for veterans requires billions of discretionary dollars to properly implement, something that Congress should prioritize over less important programs. Rather than paying for the benefit by targeting wasteful spending, such as political slush funds and excessive compensation for federal bureaucrats, Congress will use fake CHIMPs cuts and further add to our $27.4 trillion national debt. Blame for this situation falls on both parties. In the case of paying for veterans care, both the House and the Senate appropriations bills designated the veterans’ health funding as “emergency funding,” exempting it from the spending limits. This was a blatant abuse of the system and a naked attempt to avoid making choices to prioritize funding for an important and politically popular program. Some Republicans fought to ensure that the additional spending stayed within the overall limits and thankfully they were successful. Unfortunately, the final omnibus uses the CHIMPs gimmick to make it happen. There was no serious attempt from either party to make room for the veterans’ benefit by trimming low-priority programs. Congress is harming the nation’s financial health by constantly placing political convenience ahead of responsible budgeting. This year’s bloated omnibus package is the latest example of Washington’s lack of concern for future generations. 3. The COVID-19 Relief Package Has Too Much Waste, Little Meaningful Response The $900 billion COVID-19 relief section of the omnibus is badly flawed. The Heritage Foundation recently released a new report detailing many of these problems. Among them:
In addition, the COVID-19 relief section now includes untargeted and unnecessary $600 stimulus checks. The checks will be sent without regard to unique COVID-19 impacts, including to the more than 93% of workers who are fortunate enough to still be employed. Many Americans are saving and paying down debts at record levels. Most Americans don’t need another check from Washington. Stimulus checks also aren’t stimulative. Government can’t spend its way back to prosperity. According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, Congress has authorized $4.1 trillion in legislative response to the outbreak of COVID-19. However, $1.6 trillion of that amount has not been disbursed or committed. Despite the significant amount of unspent money, Congress is rushing to pass another stimulus bill that is even larger than former President Barack Obama’s failed 2009 stimulus package. While some level of federal response is warranted, a smaller and focused COVID-19 package would be more effective at fighting the pandemic without needlessly adding to the national debt. 4. It Gives Sweetheart-Deal Tax Extenders to Special Interests The majority of these are corrupt subsidies for special interests, such as alternative fuels, special types of vehicles, new solar investments, a tuna cannery in American Samoa, and certain coal owned by Indian tribes, among others. The bill extends 11 provisions for five years, including the New Markets Tax Credit and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which have both been repeatedly shown as ineffective, as well as a handful of other renewable energy subsidies. Congress has also created at least two new temporary extenders that expand deductions for charitable giving and business meals. Six previously temporary provisions are made permanent, including lower effective tax rates for small producers of beer, wine, and spirits—a welcome departure from the normal year-to-year uncertainty. The remainder of the extenders are only renewed through next year. Attaching narrow, temporary tax changes to must-pass bills at the end of the legislative session is a failure of fiscal policy. The practice allows ineffective subsidies for special interests to persist year after year, creates economic uncertainty for those who rely on the changes to plan their business, and obscures the true cost to taxpayers. None of the temporary provisions should be cause for passing this extenders package. This Congress should allow all the extenders to expire and let the 117th Congress debate individual provisions on their merits. 5. It Enables the Government to Interfere in the Energy Market The bill creates and expands government programs for the development of wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower, carbon capture, nuclear, and energy storage technologies. It also includes subsidies for energy efficiency programs and workforce development. While basic research and development at the Department of Energy’s national laboratories, these programs overstep the role of the government in commercialization. The private sector should assume the risk (and reap the rewards) of investing new technologies. Businesses also invest in workforce development to expand their operations and energy savings technologies when they believe it is the best use of their dollars. And they’ll do so without the help of the taxpayer. When the federal government steps in, it offsets money that should be spent by the private sector and influences how companies spend their money. Much like the larger energy bills passed in 2005 and 2007, these interventionist provisions put Washington in charge rather than investors and consumers. 6. It Rightfully Ends Surprise Medical Billing—but Creates a New Class of Rate-Setting Bureaucrats Unfortunately, the bill also deputizes an army of federal contractors to dictate how much insurance companies must pay doctors. It requires that the health and human services secretary be notified any time a doctor who is not part of an insurance company’s network is unhappy with an insurer’s payment. Both the doctor and the insurer would then submit their final offers to a government-contracted arbitrator, who would choose between the two offers. That decision would be final, binding on both parties, and not subject to judicial review. Congress is right to act on surprise medical bills but wrong to force noncontracting parties into binding arbitration, effectively outsourcing medical rate-setting on an ad hoc basis to a new class of government arbiters. 7. It Wisely Winds Down the Federal Reserve’s Emergency Authority Enabling the central bank to distribute hundreds of billions of dollars more to favored interests might be politically expedient, but it masks the economic misery caused by government-mandated suppression of supply and demand. Providing the Federal Reserve emergency lending facilities furthermore allows Congress to shirk responsibility for this spending largesse. Whatever the political expediency, granting the Federal Reserve such power to further expand its balance sheet is irresponsible and further increases the risk of a monetary crisis. 8. It Will Increase Defense Stability Further, after two continuing resolutions, finally having a final full-year defense appropriations bill will go a long way toward providing stability and predictability for the military as it continues to rebuild readiness and move toward great power competition. Although there is a lot to unpack in the many pages of the bill, it seems most of the administration’s priorities were addressed, with the exception of a cut of 2,900 people to the administration’s initial request for the size of the U.S. Marine Corps, bringing it to 181,200. 9. It Defends Key Pro-Life Policies That the Left Have in Its Crosshairs But the plethora of pro-life and conscience protection items in appropriations bills—some of which, like the Hyde Amendment, have been part of spending bills for many decades—are under attack from pro-abortion policymakers. Incoming House Appropriations Committee Chair Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and Speaker Nancy Pelosi have vowed that in the new Congress the Hyde Amendment will no longer be incorporated in spending bills, and during his presidential campaign, Joe Biden reversed his decades-held position to say he no longer supports the policy. < The Hyde Amendment and other pro-life riders will be under direct threat like never before in the 117th Congress, and the inclusion of pro-life protections in the fiscal year 2021 omnibus may mark the last time for the foreseeable future that these consensus policies are included without protracted negotiations and debate. To Summarize, the Omnibus Is a Missed Opportunity Likewise, the COVID-19 aid could have been targeted to help deploy a better health response anchored in rapid self-testing. The massive omnibus package is being jammed through at the last minute with little input or even time for members of Congress to review the bill. Instead of lumping many policies into a single “must pass” legislation, Congress should debate these items separately and consider them on their own merits. Policymakers missed the opportunity to put forward a bill that would put the country on a better path. In a year where a lot of things went wrong, add this omnibus to the list. A Christmas Message Of Hope, Joy, And Prophetic Defiance
Posted: 22 Dec 2020 04:08 PM PST by Mario Murillo Ministries: Are you exhausted from the relentless stream of bad news? Do you need to shake off the emotional roller coaster and raging disappointment that is 2020? The devil said, “This will be the worst Christmas of your life.” The evil one said, “You will not have joy, hope, and family warmth this year.” WHAT A LIE! Are you ready for an industrial strength Christmas—a Christmas of prophetic defiance? Are you ready to understand how God drops the hammer on evil? He does it when evil least expects it. Let me borrow my prologue from a great narrator: “Submitted for your approval…” I take you back two thousand and twenty years to the bed chamber of the most powerful man in the world. Listen carefully, Barack Obama, George Soros, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Oprah—this one’s for you. It was in the bed chamber of the most powerful man in the world that globalism was hatched. A sinister plot that was worldwide and unstoppable. Augustus Caesar decided to make everyone go back to their place of birth and register. This was the first global database. This was the first attempt to harvest everyone’s private information in order to collect their money and control their lives. All of his plans would have worked, except for one thing: Prophecy. Now I am going to tell you something that might take a little thought. But the thinking it requires will reap a great reward of peace and a deep sense of purpose. What I want you to see are two words: Policy and Prophecy. I believe that the world is governed by those two forces. Policies are the laws and rules made up by men. Prophecies are the promises of the purposes of God that are assigned to specific generations. Now, here is the big point: When policy and prophecy collide, prophecy always wins. A better way to say it is that when man makes a plan, God’s word for that time will exploit and overrule that plan. Listen to Psalm 76, beginning at verse 7: “You, Yourself, are to be feared; and who may stand in Your presence when once You are angry? 8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth feared and was still, 9 when God arose to judgment, to deliver all the oppressed of the earth. Selah. 10 Surely the wrath of man shall praise You; with the remainder of wrath, You shall gird Yourself.” In the early stages of a collision between policy and prophecy, the righteous can look utterly helpless and their hope can look totally futile. On the other hand, tyrants can look omnipotent. The perfect example is Mary and Joseph on one side, and Augustus Caesar on the other. The young couple are at the mercy of Rome. The edict couldn’t have been handed down at a worse time. She is with child, and the law is cruel and indifferent to their plight. It looks as if all the wrong people are winning. But the seed of final victory in this story was sown seven centuries before. It happened when a so-called ‘minor’ prophet said this: “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting” (Micah 5:2). Augustus signed the order that sent Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem, but prophecy swallowed policy. So, before you let Christmas slide past you, stop and get an attitude. Before you let your guard down and give in to despair about a stolen election and the seemingly inevitable banishment of the rightful President, consider this: One more time the wrath of man will praise God. Yet again, prophecy will swallow policy. All you villains and your voting machines, T.V. Networks and colossal tech companies have conspired to bring down America. You are just like Caesar as you lounge on your beds, oblivious to the God Who punches evil in the face. Wake up villains! Donald Trump and the nearly 80 million Americans who voted for him are not just going to vanish. And you are painfully ignorant of something else: You don’t know what America is. You just see a nation of quaint traditions that you despise. America is a miracle. God loves America. Warts and all, God still loves America. If you knew what He was about to do, you would be quaking in your boots. If you could walk alongside Mary and Joseph, knowing what you know now, on that long and disheartening journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem―and we are talking 90 miles of bad road—a road that mocked their poverty and her pregnancy, what would you say to them? What would you tell them? You would undoubtedly tell them to hang in there, because something glorious—something beyond their comprehension is going to come out of this misery. And that is precisely what God is telling you right now. Hang on! Because every violent and cruel plan of man will be swallowed up by the Word of God! “The Lord knows the days of the upright, and their heritage will abide forever. They shall not be put to shame in the time of evil…but the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the Lord shall be as the fat of lambs [that is consumed in smoke]. They shall vanish; like smoke shall they be consumed!” (Psalm 37:18-20) Tags: Mario Murillo, Christmas Message, Hope, Joy, Prophetic DefianceTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. 47.) NBC MORNING RUNDOWN
Wednesday, December 23, 2020
|
Good morning, NBC News readers.
President Donald Trump granted a wave of pardons and commutations to a number of ex-advisers, convicted former lawmakers and ex-Blackwater contractors. He also blasted the massive Covid relief bill, threatening to derail the bipartisan package.
Here is what we’re watching this Wednesday morning.
|
Trump issues slew of pardons, blasts Covid relief bill
President Donald Trump pardoned former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos on Tuesday, along with over a dozen other people, including several former congressmen who have long been Republican allies of the president.
The White House said in a statement that Trump was granting full pardons to 15 people and commuting parts or all of the sentences of five others. Among those granted clemency were Republican former Reps. Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York and four ex-Blackwater contractors convicted in the killings of Iraqi civilians.
And in somewhat surprising comments, Trump also shredded the just-passed $900 billion Covid-19 relief package Tuesday night, saying the legislation contains measures that have nothing to do with the pandemic and is too stingy on payments to average Americans.
Calling the bill a “disgrace” in a White House video posted to Twitter, he called for the stimulus checks to Americans to more than triple.
House Democrats, who had advocated for higher direct checks for months, immediately welcomed Trump’s support for sending out more money.
The legislation already passed by Congress included two bills that were combined: One was the Covid-19 relief and stimulus bill, and the other was a large spending bill to fund the government through next September.
During his online comments, Trump seemed to be conflating the two pieces of legislation.
See the handful of oddball bills unrelated to coronavirus that made their way into the must-pass funding package.
While Trump didn’t explicitly say he will veto the relief bill, his remarks suggested that he might.

As U.K. faces mutant virus surge over Christmas, experts warn U.S.: ‘It’s coming’
Dozens of countries have effectively tried to seal off the islands of the United Kingdom in a drastic attempt to halt the global spread of a new coronavirus variant.
But it may be too late, some experts warn.
Some, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, believe the U.K. variant is likely already in the United States, where the federal government has so far resisted calls to tighten the already strict travel restrictions on Europe.
Fauci, the nation’s top infectious diseases expert who turns 80 on Christmas Eve, and other top government health officials received their first dose of the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday.
As states roll out the vaccines, track the numbers of people inoculated here.
The vaccinations can’t come soon enough: The U.S. on Tuesday saw the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in a single day, breaking the previous single-day high set just a week ago, according to NBC News count.

NEED TO KNOWIsraeli Government CollapsesIsrael will hold its fourth round of national elections in less than two years after lawmakers failed to find consensus yesterday on a budget impasse before a midnight deadline. By law, the country’s parliament—the Knesset—will be dissolved and a new vote scheduled for March 23. The 120-person Knesset has seen more than a dozen political parties claim seats since early 2019. The fractured political interests—particularly between secular and ultra-Orthodox members—have made it virtually impossible to achieve a 61-seat majority. Long-running Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to form a governing coalition for the first time in April 2019, which was followed by two more elections in September 2019 and March 2020. A fragile power-sharing agreement between Netanyahu and challenger Benny Gantz was achieved this spring; the budget failure signals the likely end to the partnership. Meanwhile, Netanyahu faces ongoing corruption charges, from which he tried (and failed) to gain immunity. A Deadly Year for JournalistsThe documented number of journalists murdered across the globe in 2020 more than doubled over the past year to 30, with at least 21 in direct retaliation for their investigative reporting. The Committee to Protect Journalists—still examining 15 other cases—also found nine deaths occurred as the result of dangerous assignments or combat. Mexico has long been the most dangerous environment for journalists, which saw five deaths, four of which were retaliatory. More than 100 journalists have been killed in the country since 2000. In Iran, the execution of Roohollah Zam for covering antigovernment protests drew worldwide condemnation. See the full report here. The news follows another recent release that found 274 journalists were imprisoned for their work around the world, the highest since records began in 1992. Explore a database of slain journalists here. California’s Senate Seat California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) selected Secretary of State Alex Padilla yesterday to replace Vice President-elect Kamala Harris (D) in the US Senate. A solidly Democratic seat representing the country’s most populous state (40 million people) and the largest state economy ($3T GDP), the highly coveted position is seen as a launchpad for grander political ambitions. Many argued Harris should be replaced by another Black woman—Rep. Karen Bass (D, CA-37) was seen as a top contender. Padilla, the child of Mexican immigrants, will be the first Latino to serve in the US Senate from California, where the demographic now makes up 40% of the population. Newsom now has the power to select a replacement for both Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra, tapped by President-elect Joe Biden as health secretary. Separately, Biden will nominate Connecticut education chief Dr. Miguel Cardona to lead the Department of Education. Cardona has worked to safely reopen schools amid the pandemic. My best Christmas present is that my gaffe-prone, yet brilliant husband got the first dose of the Moderna vaccine this morning (he’s an infectious disease doc). Joy and gratitude!
I disagree with the concept attributed to Mr. Daniel Cox, to the effect that Americans should argue about politics with their family members during holiday meals. Family has too much baggage, and the possibility of real and drastic consequences is high.
For example, it’s highly likely that a young(ish) person who is most certainly the first person in the history of the world to be Totally Right about Literally Everything will find that she needs the goodwill of her horrible, bigoted parents when the rent is due and her wonderful boyfriend – also Totally Right about Literally Everything – has done a bunk.
Oh, did I say that out loud?
Anyway, to return to generalizations, I would suggest that the benefits of vigorous political discussion are best accessed outside the home and also outside the workplace (see consequences, above).
