AXIOS
Axios AM
☕ Good Tuesday morning. Today’s Smart Brevity™ count: 1,290 words … 5 minutes.
White House aides have advised President Trump to avoid the Oval Office while he’s still infected. But they’re making arrangements for him to work out of the Diplomatic Reception Room, and use it as a backdrop for future televised remarks, two White House officials tell Axios’ Alayna Treene.
- Why it matters: The preparations show that far from bunkering down in the residence until he’s well, Trump is considering remaining active while he recovers from COVID.
- Any Trump movement in the West Wing would create a series of risks for his staff.
A taste of Trump’s attitude about the virus played out on live TV last evening as he returned by Marine One at sunset after three nights at Walter Reed: He walked up to a White House balcony, took off his mask for the cameras, put it in his jacket pocket, adjusted his suit, straightened his tie and lingered to give purposeful thumbs-ups and salutes.
- “Don’t be afraid of Covid,” he tweeted — the exact opposite of what any medical or public-health professional will tell you. “Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”
- “Will be back on the Campaign Trail soon!!!” he added.
Reflecting widespread dismay among administration officials, a White House source told Axios’ Alexi McCammond:
- “It’s insane that he would return to the White House and jeopardize his staff’s health when we are still learning of new cases among senior staff. This place is a cesspool.”
- “He was so concerned with preventing embarrassing stories that he exposed thousands of his own staff and supporters to a deadly virus. He has kept us in the dark, and now our spouses and kids have to pay the price. It’s just selfish.”
The big picture: The White House — despite its infinite access to the best resources available — continues to respond to its own coronavirus outbreak about as recklessly as possible, Axios’ Caitlin Owens writes.
- The White House is doing only minimal contact tracing, and hasn’t sought help from the CDC, the N.Y. Times reports (subscription). The White House has decided not to trace the contacts of attendees at last weekend’s Rose Garden event celebrating the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.
- Mayor Muriel Bowser said D.C. officials have been unsuccessful in trying to connect with the White House to assist with contact tracing: “We have reached out to the White House on a couple of different levels, a political level and a public health level.”
Among those endangered by Trump’s approach:
- “The White House residence staff members are largely Black and Latino, and often elderly, according to Kate Anderson Brower, who compiled a trove of interviews with former staffers for her book ”The Residence,'” the WashPost reports. There are about 90 full-time ushers, butlers, housekeepers, valets, florists, engineers and cooks.
- “For the Secret Service, a New Question: Who Will Protect Them From Trump?” says a N.Y. Times headline.
- White House reporters are increasingly anxious and angry, Axios’ Sara Fischer reports. N.Y. Times White House correspondent Michael Shear, who tested positive, tells Axios: “My wife has now tested positive for COVID. The collateral damage is going to be pretty significant, I think.”
The Axios/Ipsos Coronavirus Index found that 21% of respondents said they’d be more likely to wear a mask in the wake of President Trump’s illness, Axios managing editor David Nather writes.
- 21% said they’d be more likely to keep a six-foot distance.
But the numbers were a wash as to whether people would trust Trump more or less to provide accurate information on the coronavirus.
- “America is so polarized and this is so crystallized, there’s no budging things,” said Cliff Young, president of Ipsos U.S. Public Affairs.
Sen. Kamala Harris and Vice President Pence will be separated by plexiglass at tomorrow’s V.P. debate in Salt Lake City, Axios’ Alexi McCammond reports.
- The Commission on Presidential Debates approved the divider at the request of Democrats. There will also be plexiglass between the candidates and the moderator, Susan Page of USA Today.
- Last week, during the first debate for the South Carolina Senate race, Democrat Jaime Harrison put a plexiglass barrier between himself and Sen. Lindsey Graham.
- Pence spokesperson Katie Miller told Axios: “If Sen. Harris wants to use a fortress around herself, have at it.”
👨🏽🚀 Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who has tested positive, said he’ll go to the Capitol “in a moon suit,” if necessary, to vote to confirm Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

Space — once the purview of the wealthiest and most technologically advanced nations — is now open to brands, private citizens and commercial companies, all at NASA’s urging, Axios Space author Miriam Kramer writes.
- Why it matters: The commercialization of spaceflight has flung open the door to branding and marketing in space that will change everyone’s relationship with the cosmos.
Estée Lauder sent its Advanced Night Repair skincare product to the International Space Station aboard a Cygnus spacecraft launched Friday. Astronauts will photograph it for the company’s social media accounts.

Dr. Fauci testifies on the Senate side on Sept. 23. Photo: Alex Edelman/Pool/Getty Images
Axios’ Margaret Talev interviewed Dr. Anthony Fauci yesterday during a Partnership for Public Service Zoom ceremony awarding him the top honor of the Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals® (Sammies).
- Fauci had this advice to doctors, scientists or aides in government who may be under pressure to give upbeat or politically helpful assessments:
Whenever you walk into the White House, or to a congressional chamber, tell yourself that “this might be the last time that I’m walking into that place … I might have to say something that’s going to get people to not like what they’re hearing, and might have them not ask me back.”
So, would I rather be on the right side of the truth, or would I like to be asked back because I told somebody something that they wanted to hear? … And … though over many years now — through Reagan, through George H.W. Bush, through Clinton, through George W. Bush, through Obama and now even through President Trump — I have had to, more often than you would think, tell people things that they did not want to hear. And I’m still here.

To try to revive the online frenzy of 2014’s Ice Bucket Challenge, Joe Biden’s campaign today launches an #ImVotingFor social-media campaign, led by high-profile surrogates who have a combined 150+ million followers.
How it works: The partners — elected leaders, digital creators and celebrities — will tag three people with #ImVotingFor, and ask them to do the same.
- “Participants will post a photo on Instagram of a loved one, someone they admire, their community, etc. — and share why their vote this year is for them.” This could include “a loved one with a pre-existing condition or a child who will be impacted by climate change or a personal hero like John Lewis.”
Launch participants include:

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell warned the league’s 32 teams of penalties including potential loss of draft choices or forfeits of games for violations of COVID protocols that force changes in the schedule, AP reports.
- Goodell wrote in a memo: “[A]ct as if every person you come in contact with has a COVID infection and take appropriate precautions.”
The context: The NFL was forced to reschedule Sunday’s game between the Steelers and Titans when Tennessee had the league’s first coronavirus outbreak, which affected 20 organization members, including 10 players.
- The league is considering requiring masks or shields during practices and walk-throughs, decreasing the size of the traveling party to games, and daily consultation of data from proximity tracking devices.

The National Zoo said its 6-week-old giant panda cub is male, based on DNA analysis:
A painting [blue paw marks] created by male giant panda Tian Tian (tee-YEN tee-YEN), the cub’s father, was used to reveal the sex of the cub to giant panda keepers and fans online.
The cub weighs 3.6 pounds and measures 14 inches from nose to tail tip.

Oct 6, 2020 View in Browser AP MORNING WIRE Good morning. In today’s AP Morning Wire:
TAMER FAKAHANY
The Rundown AP PHOTO/ALEX BRANDON Trump, still contagious, is back at White House — without mask; ‘An embarrassment’: Trump tweet angers pandemic survivors
In a heavily choreographed return from a military hospital, where he received unprecedented state-of the-art treatment, a still-infectious President Donald Trump stood on a White House balcony without a mask basking in the moment.
He had immediately ignited a new controversy by declaring that despite his illness the nation should not fear the virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans, Zeke Miller, Jill Colvin and Aamer Madhani report.
Trump climbed the South Portico steps, removed his mask and declared, “I feel good.”
He remains contagious, is expected to continue his recovery at the White House, where he will be cared for 24/7 by a team of doctors and nurses.
Just a month before the election and anxious to project strength, Trump tweeted before leaving the hospital, “Will be back on the Campaign Trail soon!!!”
Trump’s earlier nonchalant tweet about not fearing the virus comes as his own administration has encouraged Americans to be very careful and take precautions to avoid contracting and spreading the disease as cases continue to spike across the country.
For more than eight months, Trump’s efforts to play down the threat of the virus in hopes of propping up the economy ahead of the election have drawn bipartisan criticism.
VIDEO: Trump stages dramatic made-for-TV White House return.
He Gets it: Now that he has contracted the virus, Trump claims he does “get it.” That revelation, seven months into the pandemic and after the staggering tally of American deaths, is not the first time he has relied on personal experience to shape his views. He says he now “understands” the virus. But his declaration that the disease should not “dominate” lives reinforces that the president has struggled to relate with everyday Americans, Jonathan Lemire reports.
Survivors’ Anger: Some who lived through COVID-19 illness and people who have lost loved ones to the pandemic are angry over Trump’s advice not to fear the disease. The world’s most prominent virus patient tweeted that he’s feeling great and that people shouldn’t let COVID-19 dominate them. One New York resident who lost his mother, grandmother and aunt to the virus, was finding it tough to follow the president’s advice not to let the virus “dominate your life.” On the contrary, he says his loss will dominate the rest of his life, Gene Johnson and Peter Prengaman report.
What we know and what we don’t about Trump’s COVID illness.
Vaunted White House virus testing couldn’t protect Trump.
White House staff, Secret Service eye virus with fear, anger.
Trump’s return means more anxiety for White House reporters.
Biden on the Trail: As Trump recovers from the virus, Joe Biden is trying to capitalize on having the campaign trail all to himself. Starting with Florida, he is stepping up travel to areas long thought to be leaning Republican as his campaign looks to expand the electoral map. The former vice president was in Miami’s conservative Little Havana on Monday and plans to visit Arizona on Thursday. And his Democratic presidential campaign is increasing advertising in the traditional red-state strongholds of Texas and Georgia. Biden has been careful not to criticize Trump, wishing him a speedy recovery, but also made clear he’s not going to stop campaigning, Will Weissert and Bill Barrow report. . AP PHOTO/TSAFRIR ABAYOV WHO: 10% of world may have been infected with virus; Europe, UK struggle; Israeli ultra-Orthodox defy lockdown
The World Health Organization says its “best estimates” indicate that roughly 1 in 10 people worldwide may have been infected by the coronavirus.
That estimate — which would amount to more than 760 million people based on a current world population of about 7.6 billion — far outstrips the number of confirmed cases as tallied by both WHO and Johns Hopkins University, now more than 35 million worldwide.
Experts have long said that the number of confirmed cases greatly underestimates the true figure, reports Jamey Keaten from Geneva.
Israel’s Ultra-Orthodox: They make up roughly 10% of the population, yet account for over one-third of the country’s coronavirus patients. Segments of the community refuse to comply with safety regulations and insist on maintaining a tight-knit way of life. The violations of Israel’s lockdown rules by some among the ultra-Orthodox population have confounded public health experts and tested Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s longstanding political alliance with religious leaders.
They also have triggered resentment in the country’s secular population, who fear that the ultra-Orthodox community’s political clout is threatening public health and livelihoods. The ultra-Orthodox claim they are being unfairly targeted by the authorities, Tia Goldenberg reports from Tel Aviv.
There is also a new surge of COVID-19 in New York City’s Orthodox Jewish communities. As a result, many residents are reviving health measures they abandoned over the summer, such as social distancing and wearing masks. For many, there’s also a return of anger. They feel the city is singling them out for criticism, David Crary and Marian Fam report.
How do I politely ask someone to wear a mask? The AP is answering Viral Questions in this series. AP PHOTO/DARIO LOPEZ-MILLS America Disrupted: Moving the voting flip zone, Democrats march deeper into suburbia
Once firmly in Republican control, American suburbs are increasingly politically divided — a rare common ground shared by Republicans and Democrats.
As such, they are poised to decide not just who wins the White House this year but also who controls the Senate and the contours of the debate over guns, immigration, work, schools, housing and health care.
The reasons for the shift are many. Suburbs have grown more racially diverse, more educated, more economically prosperous and more liberal. But demographers and political scientists are just as likely to point to another trend: density. Suburbs have grown more crowded, looking more like cities, and voting like them, too.
Cliched campaign ads might show acres of wheat and bustling cities, but the United States is a suburban nation.
PHOTOS: Scenes from Arizona’s growing, pivotal suburbs.
AP VoteCast, a survey of the electorate, found that 52% of voters in 2018 said they live in suburbia. It’s not surprising that Trump and Biden have been tussling over suburban voters for months.
Angeliki Kastanis, Josh Boak and Dario Lopez-Mills have the latest story in AP’s America Disrupted series. from Phoenix, Arizona. US Wildfires
The staggering scale of California’s wildfires has reached another milestone: A single fire has surpassed 1 million acres.
The new mark for the August Complex in the Coast Range between San Francisco and the Oregon state line came a day after the total area of land burned by California wildfires this year passed 4 million acres, more than double the previous record.
The August Complex began as dozens of fires ignited by lightning in the Mendocino National Forest in mid-August. Gov. Gavin Newsom says it has burned more land than all the wildfires recorded in California from 1932 to 1999.
California wildfires are huge this year, but not the deadliest. Other Top Stories Armenia accused Azerbaijan of firing missiles into the capital of the separatist territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan said several of its towns and its second-largest city were attacked. Iran, which borders both countries, said it was working on a peace plan, but it also warned against any fighting spilling into its territory. The conflict reignited Sept. 27 and has killed scores on both sides. Nagorno-Karabakh lies in Azerbaijan but has been under control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since the end of a separatist war in 1994. Hurricane Delta is gaining strength and is on a course to pass by the Cayman Islands early today before hitting Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula as a major storm and continuing on to strike the U.S. Gulf coast later in the week. As Delta shifted west, Cuba withdrew a hurricane warning for its province of Pinar del Rio and replaced it with a tropical storm warning. An Australian man who accused Cardinal George Pell of sexually abusing him has denied that he was bribed for his testimony, shooting down the latest conspiracy theory to rock the Vatican amid a corruption investigation into its shady finances. Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera speculated in recent days that Vatican investigators were looking into whether Pell’s nemesis at the Vatican, ousted Cardinal Angelo Becciu, wired 700,000 euros in Vatican money to a bank account in Australia, and if that money was tied to Pell’s sex abuse trial. The Supreme Court has opened its new term with a jolt from two conservative justices on the question of same-sex marriage. Justice Clarence Thomas suggested in a statement that the court needs to revisit the issue after having affirmed the right to gay marriage. Justice Samuel Alito joined him in the statement. The matter resurfaces as the court is expected to take a turn to the right if Amy Coney Barrett is confirmed after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Reversing the court’s decision in the gay marriage case would seem a tall order. GET THE APP

POLITICO Playbook: Trump’s closing argument
Presented by Facebook
DRIVING THE DAY
HOW CAN YOU SAY you support masks, if the Covid-stricken president of the United States walks into the White House and takes off his mask publicly before filming a video without said mask — even if he was standing far away from everyone?
HOW CAN YOU SAY you trust scientists, and then tell scientists their standards are too onerous?
HOW CAN YOU SAY Covid is not a big deal as your doctors say when you’re not yet out of the woods less than a week after you get the virus?
HOW CAN YOU SAY don’t let Covid “dominate” your life — as President DONALD TRUMP did in a video Monday night — when you’ve just left a hospital in which you were pumped with experimental medicine that almost no one can get, under the care of a team of world-class physicians in a hospital wing that’s for you and you alone?
CNN’S JAKE TAPPER on the TRUMP VIDEO: “I would like to know who at the White House watched this and said, ‘Yes, that’s great, he caught the virus to lead, this is a winning message, post it.’”
N.Y. POST: “FACE OFF” … NYT: “LEAVING HOSPITAL, TRUMP MINIMIZES VIRUS RISK” — with an ANNA MONEYMAKER photo of TRUMP taking his mask off.
NYT’S MAGGIE HABERMAN and ANNIE KARNI, with a Political Memo bug: “Trump’s Campaign Saw an Opportunity. He Undermined It”: “On Friday, even as President Trump had trouble getting enough oxygen and aides prepared to move him to the nation’s top military hospital, some of his campaign advisers saw a potential opportunity.
“If Mr. Trump recovered quickly from his bout with the coronavirus and then appeared sympathetic to the public in how he talked about his own experience and that of millions of other Americans, he could have something of a political reset. The health crisis, one campaign official said, was a setback in a re-election campaign that polls have shown him losing for months, but also a chance to demonstrate a new stance toward the virus that might win over some voters.
“And the president could use that to show from now until the second presidential debate, scheduled for Oct. 15, that the disease is serious but can be combated, and that he was ready to re-enter the campaign.
“While that was the hope, it was severely undermined over the last few days by the president’s own behavior — no more so than Monday when he tweeted to the nation ‘Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life!’ without acknowledging that, as president, he gets far better care than the average citizen. His comments signaled a far likelier reality: that the erratic handling of his illness by Mr. Trump and his aides will remind voters of his administration’s failures and efforts to play down the deadly pandemic for six months.”
HAPPY TUESDAY. We have some personal news. (Is that how this goes?)
AFTER FOUR YEARS at the helm of Playbook, and 11 years for JAKE and nine for ANNA at POLITICO, we’ve decided it’s time for a new adventure. We’ll pass the baton and leave POLITICO at the end of this year.
WHEN WE TOOK OVER in July 2016, we knew we were taking over a unique platform — but we didn’t quite understand how special it was. Playbookers hail from all over the planet, come from all walks of life and have been waking up every morning, rain or shine, holiday, weekday or weekend, to the POLITICO Playbook for 13 years.
WE’RE REALLY PROUD of what we’ve all been able to do here: Playbook readership has tripled since 2016, we created a popular audio briefing and afternoon edition, hosted events across the country and in D.C. with governors, the vice president, senators, members of the House and nearly every congressional leader. Tax reform. Impeachment. The midterms. USMCA, which was, as you’ve heard, the president’s top legislative priority. The wall. The shutdown. Infrastructure weeks (plural). Two presidential elections. And Covid.
WE’RE VERY GRATEFUL that you have come along for the ride. And what a wild ride it’s been — more than 1,500 Playbooks, dozens of events and a best-selling book.
POLITICO is a massive newsroom filled with loads of talented journalists — a crew we’ve been very proud to have been a part of. But, as a smart man once said, this has all been wonderful, now I’m on my way. Thanks to Robert Allbritton, Carrie Budoff Brown, John Harris, Matt Kaminski and Patrick Steel. Most of all, our gut check and terrific editor Blake Hounshell, John Bresnahan and the Hill team and our intrepid Playbookers Eli Okun and Garrett Ross.
WHAT’S NEXT? Playbook has grown significantly over the last four years, and we have no doubt that will continue. As for us — Anna and Jake — we’re excited to take on a new challenge and we’ll have more to say about our next steps soon enough. But first, we have an election to cover, a post-election to report on, a lame duck to help navigate and leadership elections to get in the middle of. Buckle up, it’s going to be a hell of a ride. Read the note to staff from Matt and Carrie here
AND NOW back to our regular programming. … 28 DAYS until Election Day — four weeks from today.

GOP DIGS IN … WAPO’S BOB COSTA: “Republican recalcitrance about the virus persists even as GOP faces growing turmoil”: “Widespread Republican recalcitrance about federal health guidelines showed few signs of waning on Monday, even as the party faces growing turmoil following President Trump’s hospitalization and as more White House aides test positive for the novel coronavirus.
“White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany and at least two of her deputies have now contracted the virus, further derailing the functioning of a West Wing plunged into crisis and adding to a long list of top Republicans who have been infected. But many Republicans continue to dismiss calls for alarm — and for changes to the party’s message on the virus and its operations.
“Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who tested positive last week, said in an interview with a conservative talk-show host that there is ‘a level of unjustifiable hysteria’ about a virus that has killed nearly 210,000 Americans and asked, ‘Why do we think we actually can stop the progression of a contagious disease?’” WaPo
— “A U.S. senator kept taking off his mask on a Delta flight, raising questions about safety oversight,” by WaPo’s Michael Laris and Lori Aratani: “The chairman of the Senate committee that oversees airlines and U.S. transportation policy had his mask off for extended periods on a Delta flight to Mississippi on Thursday night, according to another passenger, and the company said he had to be reminded twice by a flight attendant to follow the airline’s mask requirement.
“The next day, the Trump administration rejected a union petition calling for a federal mandate requiring masks be worn on planes, trains and buses, saying the Department of Transportation ‘embraces the notion that there should be no more regulations than necessary.’”
UP NEXT … THE VP DEBATE … CHRIS CADELAGO: “Harris preps to take on Pence”: “Harris’ tone toward the laid-up president is expected to mirror Biden’s of late, according to aides and allies. The Democratic presidential contender and Harris have wished the president a speedy recovery. Their campaign pulled negative TV ads and implored staff to refrain from piling on to reporters and on social media, though as Trump emerged from the hospital late Monday, Biden suggested he would not let him off the hook for not wearing a mask and flaunting social distancing protocols.
“The grim circumstances don’t change Harris’ overarching objective: to methodically yolk Pence to the Trump administration’s months of failures to contain the virus, zeroing in on his role as chair of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. The legal threat to the Affordable Care Act — clarified by the battle over the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s seat — will be another focal point for Harris. And after Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito lamented Monday the ‘ruinous consequences for religious liberty’ of the court’s decision that granted marriage rights — and signaled that the ruling should be reconsidered — the VP contenders’ sharply divergent records on same-sex marriage are likely to surface.
“Harris’ aides view Pence as a far more polished and disciplined orator than the president. Unlike with Trump, they say, when Pence says something untrue it is packaged in language that makes it harder to spot and counter in real time. But Harris will attempt to pin him down on Trump’s stewardship of the sputtering economy and explosive remarks on race and groups tied to white supremacy.”
CNN’S MANU RAJU on the trail with LINDSEY GRAHAM in South Carolina, with ALEX ROGERS and ALI ZASLAV: “Graham, vulnerable in South Carolina, tells liberals: ‘We’re gonna kick your ass’” … The piece that aired on CNN
THE FIGHT FOR FLORIDA …
— AP’S WILL WEISSERT and BILL BARROW in Miami: “The Democratic presidential nominee made his second trip to Florida in a little over two weeks on Monday. His visit to Miami was designed to encroach on some of Trump’s turf, even swinging through Little Havana, a typically conservative area known for its staunch opposition to the communist government that Fidel Castro installed in Cuba.”
— SABRINA RODRÍGUEZ and MARC CAPUTO in Miami: “Biden mounts late fight for Miami”: “After months of dire warnings that Donald Trump is making gains in this liberal bastion, Joe Biden is finally listening to South Florida Democrats. For much of the campaign, Miami Democrats have been sounding the alarm at Biden’s relatively tepid support among Democratic-leaning, non-Cuban Hispanic voters here and throughout Florida. The problem was compounded by Trump’s outsized support among Cuban Americans.
“Without a big winning margin and high turnout in populous Miami-Dade County, Biden would have little chance of winning the state. So over the past two months, Biden’s campaign responded by embarking on a hiring spree in South Florida, giving more local-press interviews and, in combination with outside groups, pouring $23 million into TV commercials in the Miami media market, according to data from the tracking firm Advertising Analytics.
“Ad Analytics data show that Biden’s campaign significantly outspent Trump in Spanish-language television ads in Florida over the last five weeks — spending a total of $3.1 million to Trump’s $2 million — and is blanketing African American newspapers and Jamaican and Haitian radio stations with ads.” POLITICO

TRUMP’S TUESDAY — The president has no public events.
ON THE TRAIL — JOE BIDEN will attend a virtual fundraiser in the afternoon. Afterward, he will travel to Gettysburg, Pa., to deliver a campaign speech.
— WHAT BIDEN WILL SAY, per an aide: “Biden will call on Americans to come together. He’ll highlight the need for people to work together and to reach across the aisle in order to address the crises we face. He’ll remind voters that we are in a battle for the soul of the nation — but it’s a battle that we’ve won again and again throughout American history, and that we can and will come together and win again.”

ACB WATCH — “‘I’ll go in a moon suit’: Covid outbreak leaves GOP unfazed in SCOTUS fight,” by Marianne LeVine: “Senate Republicans are still moving forward with confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court — and they’re making no apologies for it. Senate Republicans, in statements and interviews Monday, defended their decision not to slow down their timeline for Barrett’s confirmation even as the coronavirus rips through Washington. …
“The majority of Republicans want to see Barrett confirmed before the Nov. 3 election and not a single GOP senator suggested Monday that the coronavirus cases in the Senate would throw them off track. ‘I don’t think anything’s changed, I think Senator Schumer wants to vote in February, most of my Republican colleagues want to vote Thursday,’ said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who plans to attend the hearing in person. ‘I figure we’ll meet in the middle and vote some time before the election.’ …
“[Sen. Ron] Johnson (R-Wis.), who revealed Saturday he has coronavirus and will stay isolated until his doctor gives him the all-clear, said in an interview with The Ross Kaminsky Show that he would do whatever it takes to vote for Barrett, even with a positive diagnosis. ‘If we have to go in and vote, I’ve already told leadership I’ll go in a moon suit,’ said Johnson, who canceled his in-state events to prevent having to go into self-quarantine before the vote. ‘I would certainly try to find a way, making sure that everybody was safe … where there’s a will there’s a way.’”

NYT’S ANA SWANSON: “Top China Critic Becomes Its Defender”: “For decades, Robert E. Lighthizer, the United States trade representative, was reliably one of Washington’s toughest critics when it came to China and its trade practices.
“But since brokering a trade deal with Beijing in January, he has become one of China’s biggest defenders within the administration, emerging as an obstacle to lawmakers and other top White House officials who want to punish China over its treatment of ethnic Muslims and begin trade talks with Taiwan.
“Over the past several months, Mr. Lighthizer has pushed back on several proposed policy measures that rankled Beijing, arguing those efforts could disrupt the U.S.-China trade pact that he and President Trump spent more than two years trying to forge, according to several former government officials and other people familiar with the conversations. Mr. Lighthizer has also curtailed his public criticisms of China, instead touting Beijing’s efforts to uphold the trade pact and live up to its end of the deal.”

“Mr. LaPierre was paid $2.2 million by the NRA in 2018, the most recent year available, the nonprofit group’s public filings show. His total reported pay from 2014 to 2018 was $11.2 million.
“In August, he was charged in a civil suit by New York Attorney General Letitia James with taking millions of dollars of allegedly undisclosed compensation from the NRA and its vendors, in the form of free yacht trips, private jet flights for his family, exotic safaris and other benefits.
“Asked at a news conference announcing the lawsuit whether she believed Mr. LaPierre had evaded personal taxes, Ms. James declined to comment but said she was referring the matter to the IRS.”

Andrew Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio are pointing fingers and offering conflicting guidance.
“The latest outbreaks have sparked fears of a second wave in America’s biggest city, once the national epicenter of the Covid-19 outbreak. Nine zip codes with large Orthodox Jewish communities have formed the nucleus of rising cases, and city officials have warned for weeks that it’s begun to spread to surrounding neighborhoods — a Pandora’s Box that could send the city back to the days of overflowing morgues and war-zone hospitals.” POLITICO

The Morning Briefing: Mainstream Media Covering Trump Needs to Swap Diapers for Big Boy Pants
Media Toddlers Need a Timeout
Happy Tuesday to my Kruiser Morning Briefing friends.
By about 11 a.m. my time yesterday, I knew what the lead-in to today’s installment would be. I’d barely perused the news when I sat down with my coffee (I keep weird hours with this gig) and saw that our brave media was in a collective snit over the president.
I’m tired of these people.
My sister actually called me later in the day to confirm I was on the right track. She said, “I know I don’t pay attention to politics like you do but I just watched a little of the news and those media people who cover the president are really awful.”
I’m not even going to go with the usual “Enemy of the People” tag, even though it still applies, of course. We’ve been covering media malpractice a lot here at the Morning Briefing.
What’s been going on since Sunday is more pathetic than media malpractice. It’s a gaggle of emotional midgets in the midst of a snot-bubbling, diaper-filling tantrum that is utterly contemptible. I might be just a little sympathetic to it if they hadn’t been doing it for four years already. We’re beyond “Boy Who Cried Wolf” at this point—we’re in “let these miserable little brats cry themselves dry” territory now.
Exhibit A:
Yes, as Katie noted, it’s certainly been a precipitous fall from “We’re the bravest!” to “The president is literally trying to murder me, mommy!” I hope Ben doesn’t get a rash.
No media meltdown would be complete without perma-hack Jake Tapper, who began his on Sunday. There’s more to come from him in a moment. If there are any conservatives out there who are still insisting that Tapper is one of the good guys, please refer them to me so that I can bury them with examples to the contrary.
Monday’s tantrums split off into two separate ones. When Kayleigh McEnany announced that she had tested positive, the fragile White House media headed for the fainting couches en masse. One of the little emos anonymously stated that McEnany “recklessly endangered lives.”
How? By not wearing a mask while still maintaining proper social distance while you all were wearing them? I mean, unless they were physically molesting her off-camera after each briefing (looking at you, Jim Acosta) I can’t really see where the imminent threat of death is. In fact, I’ve just endured seven months of listening to the “SCIENCE!” people saying that merely wearing the mask was all one needed to be safe. “Wear the damn mask!” they’re fond of saying. It’s like a Captain America shield in their telling of the story.
Shouldn’t the masks they were wearing have protected them from the woman who wasn’t wearing one and not standing anywhere near them most of the time?
Has the media been lying to us?
The poor dears’ mental states had so deteriorated on Monday that they managed to be upset at the fact that the president of the United States was well enough to leave the hospital. Because these emotionally damaged little media kids need to have a visceral breakdown reaction to virtually everything the president does.
The media continued the foot-stomping because President Trump dared to tweet this:
He’s telling the American people to not live in fear and the media became apoplectic. It’s as if they’ve never heard of one of FDR’s most famous lines.
The media reaction to the tweet was predictable and almost looked coordinated. There’s a must-watch video of it here.
The 24/7 outrage over all things Trump from the mainstream media is beyond the pale. These irresponsible journos are threats to any number of freedoms and are actively working to usher in a regime that will truly be a threat to the Republic.
But hey, let’s all worry about their feelings.

Happy Tuesday! As of now, tomorrow night’s vice presidential debate between Mike Pence and Kamala Harris is still on—plexiglass divider and all—which means Steve, Jonah, David, and Sarah will be back on Dispatch Live breaking it all down after the debate concludes. Get all the details here, and we’ll see you tomorrow at around 10:40 p.m. ET.
Quick Hits: Today’s Top Stories
- The United States confirmed 34,263 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday per the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 Dashboard, with 3.6 percent of the 956,394 tests reported coming back positive. An additional 345 deaths were attributed to the virus on Monday, bringing the pandemic’s American death toll to 210,155.
- President Trump was discharged from Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday evening, returning home to the White House. Dr. Sean Conley, Trump’s physician, said the president’s condition is improving, but added that Trump is “not out of the woods yet.”
- White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced on Monday that she tested positive for COVID-19, though she is not experiencing symptoms. Two of her press aides—Chad Gilmartin and Karoline Leavitt—have also tested positive for the virus.
- The Centers for Disease Control updated its COVID-19 guidelines again on Monday, confirming that the virus can spread through the air, especially in enclosed and poorly ventilated areas where viral particles can sometimes linger for hours. “There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with COVID-19 seem to have infected others who were more than 6 feet away,” the CDC’s website now says.
- Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican from Pennsylvania and a principled conservative, announced on Monday he will not seek reelection or run for governor once his senate term ends in 2022. He plans to finish serving out his term, at which point he will return to the private sector.
- Armenian officials accused the Azerbaijani government on Monday of launching missiles into the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry accused Armenian forces of shelling several towns in Azerbaijan. Iran says it is working on a peace plan between the two aggrieved parties.
Trump Heads Home, and Other Virus News
Yesterday was another day of big developments on COVID-19. Let’s quickly run through three of them.
President Trump is home. The president announced in an afternoon tweet yesterday that he was feeling great and would be returning to the White House that very evening.
As we noted yesterday, Trump is still very much in the thick of his bout with COVID—he continues to be treated with the powerful steroid dexamethasone, among other things. But as far as his care is concerned, heading home to continue his COVID treatment isn’t necessarily the deeply inadvisable act that it would be for a regular American in his iffy condition. White House physician Sean Conley noted as much in his press conference yesterday: “He’s returning to a facility, the White House medical unit, that’s staffed 24/7 with top-notch physicians, nurses, PAs, logisticians. And the team here behind me is going to continue to support us in that nature.”
The worst-case scenario here is just that Trump ends up having to troop right back to Walter Reed, which wouldn’t be a problem except from a White House messaging perspective. (Returning to the White House does potentially raise the threat of additional COVID spread among the staff who work there, unless President Trump proves more conscientious about keeping his germs to himself in private than he has been in public so far.)
What’s more concerning is what the tweet suggests about Trump’s takeaways from his brush with the virus. In a video posted Sunday, Trump said he’d “learned a lot about COVID” by “really going to school.”
The EU/UK Clash on Boris’s Internal Market Bill
The European Union announced last week the initiation of legal action against the United Kingdom to address the Internal Market Bill, which—by Britain’s own admission—would breach international law. Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s proposed legislation would lay out a new economic blueprint for the U.K.’s four nations after its severance from the Single Market, but includes stipulations that violate the “Brexit” withdrawal terms.
The legal showdown is unfolding amid efforts by both parties to reach a new trade agreement to replace some of the economic ties between Britain and the European Union. Before the Brexit transition period expires at the end of this year, they hope to reach a mutually beneficial agreement to continue free trade. But according to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and other critics, the Internal Market Bill overrides the EU’s ability to oversee trade between the U.K. and Northern Ireland.
“The commission has decided to send a letter of formal notice to the U.K. government. This draft bill is by its very nature a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement,” Von der Leyen said from Brussels on Thursday. “If adopted as is, it will be in full contradiction to the protocol of Ireland-Northern Ireland.”
Worth Your Time
- American Purpose—a new magazine whose editorial board includes Francis Fukuyama, Eliot Cohen, Tyler Cowen, and Larry Diamond—launched on Monday with the stated purpose of defending liberal democracy at home and abroad while examining the “tensions within liberal democracy that leave it vulnerable to these attacks.” Fukuyuma wrote a founding essay of sorts, entitled “Liberalism and its Discontents,” that defines the boundaries of this debate. Noting the tensions between liberal ideology and unchecked democracy, he writes that the greatest threat to liberal democracy “arises from populists within existing liberal democracies who are using the legitimacy they gain through their electoral mandates to challenge or undermine liberal institutions.” Liberalism has “been repeatedly challenged by thick communitarians on the right and progressive egalitarians on the left,” he continues. While small-l liberals have much to learn from critics, Fukuyama argues liberalism is more necessary than ever “because it is fundamentally a means of governing over diversity, and the world is more diverse than it ever has been.”
- For a look at why liberalism is facing particular threat in the United States, check out David Brooks’ latest essay in The Atlantic. Titled “America Is Having a Moral Convulsion,” Brooks’ piece outlines our declining trust in not only institutions, but each other. Citing already low levels of social cohesion—especially among the youngest generations—Brooks argues the tumultuous, tragic events of this year, from the pandemic to George Floyd’s death and nationwide protests, “flooded the ravines that had opened up in American society and exposed every flaw.” He writes that “social trust is a measure of the moral quality of a society,” and “under the stresses of 2020, American institutions and the American social order crumbled and were revealed as more untrustworthy still. We had a chance, in crisis, to pull together as a nation and build trust. We did not.”

- In Monday’s edition of The Sweep, Sarah explores the latest presidential polls, runs the numbers on both candidates’ campaign spending, and highlights two counties to keep an eye on as we approach November 3. Declan digs into the likelihood of President Trump receiving a sympathy bounce in the polls following his bout with COVID-19, and Audrey analyzes attack ads and their ability to persuade undecided voters.
- The Supreme Court is back in session, and our Advisory Opinions podcast hosts are nerding out. On Monday’s episode, Sarah and David discuss the evolution of religious liberty and discrimination law, ongoing election disputes in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, and the drama at the Texas attorney general’s office. Our hosts wrap things up by poking holes in the 25th Amendment and unpacking what happens when presidents die at different points in the cycle. Their constitutional exercise pairs nicely with Charlotte’s latest piece exploring the weaknesses of our country’s continuity-of-government measures.
- Nic Rowan recently attended a Boaters for Trump rally in Virginia, and has written a great piece for the site about the experience. “As we plow down the river,” he writes, “Dan Draper tries to induct me into the movement. Boaters for Trump, he explains, is for everyone. You don’t even have to own a boat, or have access to a boat. Just loving the president is enough for membership.”

The terrible (but understandable) news that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune adaptation will be delayed from December 2020 until October 2021 had us thinking: What was the last movie you saw in theaters during the Before Times? KEY POINTS FROM THIS ARTICLE— In the upcoming 2020 elections, if Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump, and if the Democrats win control of the Senate and maintain control of the U.S. House, statehood for the District of Columbia and for Puerto Rico is a real possibility. — On June 26, 2020, the U.S. House voted 232-180 to establish Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, as the 51st state. — A referendum for P.R. statehood will be held in Puerto Rico on Nov. 3, 2020. If the referendum favors statehood, and if Puerto Rico submits a petition for statehood, and if Biden beats Trump, and if the Democrats win control of the Senate, then there is a chance that the House and Senate will pass a resolution authorizing statehood. — Statehood will result in four new senators, two each for the District and for Puerto Rico. Three or perhaps even all four will likely be Democrats. — Statehood will result in the District receiving one seat in the House and Puerto Rico receiving four seats. The size of the U.S. House likely would remain at 435. Therefore, five states could each receive one less House seat in the 2020 apportionment: New York, Florida, Texas, Montana, and Illinois. IntroductionOn Sept. 26, President Donald Trump selected Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to fill the seat on the Supreme Court of the recently deceased Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, is scheduling a confirmation vote in the Senate before Nov. 3, 2020, Election Day. With a 53-47 Republican majority in the Senate, he appears to have enough votes, although the coronavirus outbreak among top Republican officials does potentially call into question the ability of the GOP to push through Barrett’s confirmation. But if Barrett is in fact confirmed to the court, “the Supreme Court will soon operate with a stout 6-3 conservative majority.” There ultimately may be little the Democrats can do to block the Barrett nomination. Democrats are particularly outraged with McConnell’s plan to orchestrate a quick confirmation of Barrett. In February 2016, with the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia nine months before the 2016 election, McConnell and many of his Republican colleagues argued that a Supreme Court seat should not be filled during an election year. They refused to schedule hearings in the Senate to consider the nomination of President Barack Obama’s candidate for the vacant seat, Merrick Garland. Nonetheless, the Democrats do not now have the Senate votes to block the confirmation of Barrett. What might the Democrats do? What are their options? One response would be statehood for Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico. In the upcoming November elections, if Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump, and if the Democrats win control of the Senate and maintain control of the U.S. House, statehood for the District and for Puerto Rico is a real possibility. Let us consider some of the background issues for D.C. and P.R. statehood. And let us examine some of the political implications. BackgroundFor years, the motto of the District of Columbia has been “Taxation without Representation.” The residents of Washington, D.C. do not have voting representation in the U.S. House or in the Senate. People living in the District pay federal income taxes but have no say about how their tax dollars are spent. Washington, D.C. has a 2020 population of over 720,000 persons, larger than the populations of Vermont and Wyoming. On June 26, 2020, the U.S. House voted 232-180, almost entirely on party lines, to establish Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, as the 51st state. Under that proposal, the National Mall, the White House, Capitol Hill, and some other federal property would remain under congressional jurisdiction, with the rest of the land becoming the new state. If Biden beats Trump and if the Democrats win over the Senate, the Democrats could get D.C. statehood through the Senate, too, although the filibuster remains an obstacle. Biden has gone on record supporting statehood for the District. Puerto Rico has been part of the U.S. since 1898, and its residents have been U.S. citizens since 1917. In 1952, Puerto Rico attained commonwealth status with local self-government. This involved a continuation of U.S. sovereignty over Puerto Rico and its people. Residents of Puerto Rico, like residents of the District, are not permitted to vote in presidential general elections, nor do they have voting representation in the U.S. House or Senate. Puerto Rico has a 2020 population of over 3 million residents, larger than the populations of 17 states and the District. A referendum for statehood will be held in Puerto Rico on Nov. 3, 2020, the sixth time there has been a referendum on statehood. It will involve a straightforward yes/no question, for or against statehood for Puerto Rico. It is non-binding because the power to grant U.S. statehood lies with the U.S. Congress. If the referendum next month favors statehood, and if Puerto Rico submits a petition for statehood, and if Biden beats Trump, and if the Democrats win control of the Senate, then the House and Senate could pass a resolution authorizing statehood. We look next at some of the implications of the District and Puerto Rico becoming the 51st and 52nd states of the U.S. ImplicationsWhat are the implications of D.C. and P.R. statehood for the distribution of Democrats and Republicans in the Senate? Every state has two senators. Currently the Senate has 45 Democrats, plus two Independents who caucus with the Democrats (Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Angus King of Maine), bringing the current total in the Democratic caucus to 47 members. There are 53 Republicans in the Senate. If Washington, D.C. is granted statehood, its two new senators will certainly be Democrats. If Puerto Rico is granted statehood, it is possible that its two new senators will be Democrats, although there is not as much certainty as with the overwhelmingly Democratic District. According to Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Jenniffer González-Colón (R), most people “don’t know how conservative Hispanics and Puerto Ricans are, and they don’t know the number of Puerto Ricans who have fought in the armed forces, and they don’t know the platform of the Republican Party, which for the last 45 years has supported statehood.” Let us assume, thus, that statehood for both the District and Puerto Rico will result in three, maybe four of the new senators being Democrats. As noted, there are currently 53 Republicans in the Senate and there are 45 Democrats, plus the two Independents who caucus with the Democrats. D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood will not occur in 2021 unless in the 2020 election Biden beats Trump and the Democrats gain control of the Senate. At a minimum, if Biden beats Trump, the Democrats would need a net gain of three seats to gain control of the Senate, resulting in a 50-50 distribution. Thereafter, if and when the District and Puerto Rico become states, the three new Democratic senators and one Republican senator would move Democratic control to 53-51. If all four new senators are Democrats, they would control the Senate 54 to 50. Now let us look at the U.S. House. There are 435 seats in the U.S. House. Every state receives one seat automatically. The remaining 385 seats are then distributed according to the size of the populations of the states, using an apportionment method known as Equal Proportions. Given our discussions about Washington DC and Puerto Rico becoming the 51st and 52nd states, we ask now how these additions would change the House. First, we believe that it is unlikely that the House will increase its number of seats beyond 435. Unlike the situation in the Senate, seat assignment in the House is a zero-sum game. If two new states are added, the first 52 seats will then go to each state, one per state. The remaining 383 will then be distributed according to the size of the state populations using the method of Equal Proportions. In the early years of our nation, the number of House seats actually changed every 10 years. Indeed, as the New York Times noted, “when the House met in 1789 it had 65 members … For well over a century, after each census Congress would pass a law increasing the size of the House. But after the 1910 census, when the House grew from 391 members to 433 (two more were added later when Arizona and New Mexico became states), the growth stopped.” We believe that owing to precedent, the number of House seats will not increase beyond 435. It has been well over 100 years since the size of the House stopped increasing in size. One exception to this “rule” occurred with the admission of Alaska and Hawaii in the late 1950s. For one session of Congress there were 437 seats (one each for Alaska and for Hawaii). However, with the results from the decennial census in 1960 the House reverted back to its basic number of 435 seats. So how will the distribution of the 435 seats change if the District and Puerto Rico become states? In our research we projected to 2020 the apportionment populations of the 50 states and then used the method of Equal Proportions to distribute among the states the remaining 385 House seats. In late July of 2020, we presented our apportionment results in Sabato’s Crystal Ball (see Map 1). We showed that 10 states are each projected to lose one House seat in 2020: Alabama, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia. And we showed that seven states are projected to gain House seats in 2020: three seats in Texas, two in Florida, and one each in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, North Carolina, and Oregon. How will this distribution change if the District and Puerto Rico become states? Map 1: 2020 reapportionment projectionHowever, if statehood occurs, it will likely occur after the 2020 apportionment of the House, perhaps in 2021 or 2022. Thus the House could temporarily increase its size to 440 with the additions of the District and Puerto Rico, and then go back to 435 with the 2030 apportionment. Or the House could undergo two 2020 apportionments, one in early 2021 without the two new states, and a second one in late 2021 or 2022 or thereafter with the two new states. According to the results of our 2020 apportionment, the states in line to receive the 435th, 434th, 433rd, 432nd and 431st seats are, respectively, New York (its 26th seat), Florida (its 29th seat), Texas (its 39th seat), Montana (its second seat), and Illinois (its 17th seat). If the District and Puerto Rico become states, these five states would each receive one less seat. In the 2016 presidential elections, three of these five states, Texas, Florida and Montana, voted Republican, while Illinois and New York voted Democratic. The three seats that the Republican states will lose to the District and Puerto Rico will likely become Democratic seats. The two that will be lost by New York and Illinois are likely to remain Democratic (although it’s sometimes hard to know with certainty precisely which party will be hurt or helped by reapportionment and redistricting in a given state). Still, similar to the situation in the Senate where the Democrats will gain three or all four of the new Senate seats if the District and Puerto Rico become states, the Democrats are likely to gain the three seats in the House that will be lost by the three Republican states, although, again, the political situation in Puerto Rico may be harder to predict. If the Democrats win the 2020 presidential election and gain control of the Senate and retain control of the House, statehood for the District and Puerto Rico becomes a real possibility. Yes, Democrats are upset, indeed incensed, with Trump’s selection of Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. But they stand to gain a great deal with statehood for the District and Puerto Rico. Indeed, as a recent story in The Hill noted, the prospects of statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. have never been greater.

The one-third of ‘evangelicals’ who support Joe Biden are not evangelicals
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:24 PM PDT There has been an excuse used by many so-called “Evangelicals” regarding their support for pro-abortion Joe Biden. They often say he’s personally against abortion but does not want to insert his religion into his politics. He obliterated that claim today when he said he would make Roe v. Wade the “law of the land” if it gets overturned in the Supreme Court. A recent story on LifeNews shows that nearly one-third of supposed evangelicals support Biden for president. As I noted on the latest episode of NOQ Report, that’s a contradiction. To say you’re an evangelical who supports abortion-on-demand Joe Biden is like saying you’re a vegan who eats chicken. Supporting those who unabashedly call for the continuous murder of God’s children revokes any claims to being an evangelical.
But polls will be polls and we should not give them much credence, as Dinesh D’Souza noted yesterday. Nevertheless, it’s disconcerting knowing there are those who claim adherence to the Bible and who still support the party that promotes abortion without restrictions, the party that has been going after religious freedoms for a long time and who has actively stated they will go after them even further the next time they’re in power.
Whatever moral challenges an evangelical has with President Trump, it cannot be in the same ballpark as the anti-Christian practices being promoted by Joe Biden and the Democrats. They’ve changed in recent years. Their only religion is nihilism. COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Two Mikes discuss the military coup with Senator Richard Black
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 04:25 PM PDT Democrats and even some “NeverTrump” Republicans have been preparing to call on the military to remove the President from office for some time. It’s not really a secret as some of the main players like former Secretary of Defense James Mattis are openly talking about it. The results of the election are not as important to these people as whether or not they’re able to remove President Trump by any means necessary. On the latest episode of Two Mikes, retired Virginia state Senator Richard Black discussed this and other topics important to Americans today. He sees a real challenge coming up in the Deep State that’s intending to derail the results of the upcoming election. Americans must prepare. This election is so important, not just because of the repercussions should Republicans lose but also because the margin of victory needs to be unambiguous. We need a landslide Trump victory in November to hold the Deep State back. COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Creepy Joe Biden to young girls: ‘I want to see them dancing when they’re 4-years older’
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 03:38 PM PDT Joe Biden does not always know what he’s saying. Or maybe he does. It’s hard to tell these days as the inappropriate comments continue to spew forth from his mouth any time he’s not in front of a teleprompter. Today was such an event at Little Haiti Cultural Center in Miami during an event that featured young Haitian girls dancing.
“Think about this: Wouldn’t it be an irony, the irony of all ironies, if on election eve it turned out Haitians deliver the coup de grâce in this election?” Mr. Biden said through a face mask. “So ladies and gentlemen, good news is for me, I’m here. The bad news is, for you is, I’m coming back. I’m coming back and I want to see these beautiful young ladies, I want to see them dancing when they’re four years older, too.” Obviously he was saying he wanted to see them again in four years when he hopes to be running for reelection, but the lack of recognition of his own creepy statements is still concerning nonetheless. Taken out of context, the quote seems bad. In context, it’s not much better. Joe Biden is either a creepy guy, a bumbling fool, or both. We’re leaning towards both. Reporter on hot mic caught saying ‘that wasn’t as fun as yesterday’ after report of President’s recovery
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 01:49 PM PDT Yes, mainstream media hates President Trump. They hate him so much that many actually hoped and wished for his condition to get worse. We know this based on their reporting on air, but it’s this interesting clip of a reporter caught on hot mic that should get your blood boiling. After Walter Reed doctors said President Trump is improving, a reporter was caught on a hot mic laughing and saying, “That wasn’t as fun as yesterday!” It’s great that the President is recovering. It’s also great, at least to some extent, that mainstream media is being exposed for their disappointment. But it also acts as a reminder that the press is not on America’s side. BREAKING: President Trump leaving Walter Reed today
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 11:51 AM PDT President Trump announced on Twitter today that he will be leaving Walter Reed Medical Center at 6:30 pm Eastern time today. According to his Tweet, he feels better than he did 20 years ago.
He Tweeted: “I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!” The message has already been pounced on by leftists in mainstream and social media because he told his followers not to be afraid of COVID-10 and to not let it dominate our lives. It’s a message that many in his base have been echoing for some time, particularly considering its extremely high recovery rate. Anyone who thought COVID-19 would get the better of President Trump was sorely mistaken. He’s a fighter in life and he’s a fighter in politics. Now, he’s getting back to business fighting for the American people. COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Why does Joe Biden ‘NEED’ you to vote early?
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 11:10 AM PDT Joe Biden put out a mini-ad on social media today that was curious. It was a 3-second video that simply says, “I need you to vote, and I need you to vote early.” But why? What’s so important about voting early? Is something coming soon? Is he expecting to lose voters the closer we get to the election?
It’s not a huge deal… or is it? Even if we disregard the fact that its a 3-second ad with no message other than voting early, what are we to glean from the message itself? As Jeff Dornik noted, it’s a question we all need to ask ourselves.
Twitter is getting in on the action, placing an emoji automatically for the hashtag #VoteEarly. Again, it’s probably nothing, but it’s peculiar that the left is pushing this narrative. Voting early means voting without all of the information available. The Biden campaign and leftists are pushing this hard. Should we be concerned? Is there something coming they don’t want us to see before voting? COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Dinesh D’Souza explains why Republicans shouldn’t be rattled by polls
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 10:16 AM PDT Since before Joe Biden announced his run for president, polls have consistently showed that he’s winning head-to-head against President Trump. But as conservative commentator and movie producer Dinesh D’Souza pointed out in a video on Rumble, Republicans shouldn’t put a whole lot of credence in polls.
Polls are biased. All of them. Some would say that they’re just asking questions and getting answers, but there are two things D’Souza points out that should give us pause. First, bias in polls manifests in how questions are asked. There’s even such a thing as “push polls” which are designed to pretend to get people’s opinions while in essence they’re actually crafting their opinions based on the wording of the questions. The second thing D’Souza points out is that many Trump-supporters are not interested in the drama that comes with discussing it publicly. There are millons of Americans who proudly announce their allegiance to America and the president who has helped to make it great again, but millions more will not wear a hat, put out a yard sign, or answer poll questions based solely on the fact that doing so may bring unwanted drama into their lives. His new movie, Trump Card, is set to release this month and should illuminate us about the realities of this presidency and the election. In the meantime, take heed in Dinesh D’Souza’s words about polls. We need to move forward confidently. COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Why Kayleigh McEnany’s positive COVID-19 test is a big deal
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:46 AM PDT Going into the home stretch of the election, Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany is arguably the most important member of the White House staff. She is the public face of the administration and is in front of the media regularly. This is why her diagnosis of COVID-19, announced today, is a major blow to the President’s reelection hopes.
One of the inherent advantages an incumbent president has over a challenger is the earned media they receive as a result of their position. Joe Biden generally has to pay for his exposure. He does not do many interviews or events, so his ads are the only way he gets on television. But President Trump must be reported on by mainstream media whether they like it or not and McEnany is the primary surrogate for the President’s policies and successes while also being an excellent front-line defender against mainstream media’s lies. Can she be replaced? Possibly. But it seems more likely there will simply not be White House press briefings until she returns. That would be a mistake, but the bigger mistake would be to throw someone up there who does not handle the media with nearly the same skill that McEnany does. It’s up to Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to insert someone into the role temporarily or do it himself if possible. This close to the election, the White House cannot go media-dark. Kayleigh McEnany may not be replaceable, but they need to try for now. COVID-19 may take down an independent news outletNobody said running a media site would be easy. Ballots sent out in bulk prove the left has corrupted the election while its media arm blames Trump
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:36 AM PDT That majority of the people don’t trust the leftist authoritarian media with a recent Gallop poll showing that “six in 10 have “not very much” trust (27%) or “none at all” (33%).” That is surprisingly low considering the daily propaganda barrage from supposedly ‘objective’ journalists. For months we’ve witnessed the nation’s socialist left looting, rioting, and burning down cities while they are termed ‘mostly peaceful’ protests. By now, it’s obvious that the leftist media has been falsely portraying the chaos as ‘peaceful’. Now with their latest attempt at pretending that all is well with mail-in voting proves they are nothing but a propaganda organ of the left. The video is of liberal Tim Pool [And Trump voter] detailing the tremendous number of problems with the left trying to change the election rules and systems at the last minute, throwing everything into chaos:
The bottom line: Does anyone still trust the leftist media aside from leftists?Does anyone still trust the people who have clearly thrown their lot in with the left? They falsely characterized rioting and looting as ‘peaceful’ while turning a blind eye to massive problems caused by their comrades on the left. The Gallup poll showed that 60% don’t trust the media. Some aren’t up to speed on what is happening. But one has to suspect that the rest of the 40% believe the leftist authoritarian media simply because it parrots their biased worldview. Trump Tests Positive for Fearlessness
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 11:08 PM PDT by Tony Perkins: He meant it as an insult, but when Chris Rock mentioned the president’s condition on “Saturday Night Live” and said, “my heart goes out to COVID,” the White House probably chuckled in agreement. If there’s one person the virus probably regrets infecting, it’s a fighter like Donald Trump. From the minute he announced his diagnosis to every upbeat video since, the president isn’t flinching in the face of this test. He’s doing what he’s done since the very beginning: confronting the virus head-on. Other men might have hidden behind their doctors’ assessments. President Trump has not. He’s taken every opportunity to reassure the American people. “We’re getting great reports,” he said, looking a little more like his old self on Sunday. “It’s been an interesting journey,” he admitted. “I learned a lot about COVID. I learned it by really going to school. This is the real school. This isn’t the let’s-read-the-books school. And I get it. And I understand it.” To the millions of Americans who’ve struggled with this virus or lost a loved one to it, that understanding matters. But it does not mean, as the president told Rudy Giuliani over the weekend, that our country should shrink back in fear and stop living. “I am the president of the United States,” he said, “I can’t lock myself in a room… I had to confront [the virus] so the American people stopped being afraid of it — so we could deal with it responsibly.” And the world needs to know, he went on, “we have made tremendous progress on treating this disease. Fatality rates are very low compared to [the beginning]. I’m going to beat this,” he vowed. “Then I will be able to show people we can deal with this disease responsibly, but we shouldn’t be afraid of it.” While the other side is trying to push Americans back into their caves, President Trump refuses to believe that the solution is hiding out until the virus has passed. He made the decision long ago that the business of the country must go on, even choosing — to the horror of liberals and their friends in the media — to host a Rose Garden ceremony for the nomination his Supreme Court pick, Amy Coney Barrett. Now, days later, as the country pours over the photo from that event, dissecting who was and wasn’t masked, there’s plenty of finger-pointing and speculation about who might have been exposed. But in the end, that’s all it is: speculation. The reality is, no one knows where and when the president was infected. Some people have noticed that I was in the photo too, sitting just a few seats away from former Governor Chris Christie. I wasn’t wearing a mask, because I’ve already had coronavirus. And those of us who have the antibodies need to be out and about, because we become part of the process that stops the spread. But if we hide in our homes, waiting for a vaccine, we’ll never reach herd immunity. And in the meantime, we’ll destroy our economy, drive up societal pathologies because of isolation and stress, and leave hurting people — thanks to shuttered churches — without a single place to turn. That’s not healthy — not for America and not for all of us. The second and third effects of the fear of the virus is a greater threat to our nation than the actual virus itself. It’s one of the reasons FRC has been so adamant about reopening churches. We can take precautions, protect those at risk and still live our lives. As a country, it’s time to stand up to this idea that Christians should be worshiping in isolation far removed from their fellow believers from which they draw community. This Sunday, October 11, FRC will be hosting a special event in conjunction with California’s Calvary Chapel Chino Hills to speak out about the church’s scriptural and constitutional authority to meet this fear head on. We’re calling it Freedom Sunday 2020, and you’re invited. Join us — either in person or for the livestream — at 8:00 p.m. (ET)/5:00 p.m. (PT) and help us take a stand for religious freedom in this country. We all need to take our cue from this president and stare down these challenges with boldness. “His push to reopen the economy, get people back to their jobs… were exactly the kinds of things a president must do to rally the nation during a crisis,” Michael Goodwin applauded. “While many on the Left have help up Biden’s hermit-like behavior as a model of safety, it is impossible to govern that way. No president can remain isolated and appear frightened and still command the respect and trust of the public. To his everlasting credit, Trump never stopped being president out of fear of getting sick.” I am standing with President Trump. We cannot allow fear of anything to stop us from meeting as a body of believers “Let us consider,” Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Tags: Tony Perkins, Washington Update, Trump Tests Positive, for FearlessnessTo share or post to your site, click on “Post Link”. Trump In Charge, The Left’s Hate, Polling Propaganda
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 10:52 PM PDT
by Gary Bauer: Trump In Charge “I just didn’t want to stay in the White House. I was given that alternative. Stay in the White House, lock yourself in, don’t ever leave. Don’t even go to the Oval Office. Just stay upstairs and enjoy it. Don’t see people. Don’t talk to people and just be done with it. And I can’t do that. I had to be out front. “This is America. This is the United States. This is the greatest country in the world. This is the most powerful country in the world. I can’t be locked up in a room upstairs and totally safe. . . I can’t do that. We have to confront problems. As a leader, you have to confront problems.” That’s quite a contrast between “Hidin Biden” and the chattering class that wants to shut the country down again. Biden has made it clear he wants to shut the country down. And the left wants to shut Trump down. They want the schools shut down. They want sports shut down. They want Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation hearing shut down. The instinct of far too many in the media and the popular culture has been to shut America down and leave the world to the tender mercies of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. And exactly how is everyone else supposed to pay their bills? Commentators can talk from their home offices. But factories can’t be run from home. Police can’t stop crimes from home. Construction workers can’t build new buildings from home. This economy isn’t run from home. In the wake of 9/11, George W. Bush flew to New York City to rally first responders who were still searching for bodies. It was possible that the city could have been attacked again. But Bush refused to hide in a bunker. America and the world needed to see our president. Anyone who thinks the presidency can be managed from their basement should be kept as far away from the Oval Office as possible. Meanwhile, President Trump tweeted that he will be discharged from Walter Reed Medical Center this evening. The Left’s Hate In Friday’s report, we told you about some of the reactions on the left. Sadly, such vile sentiments are not just rare isolated cases. One poll found that 40% of Democrats said the news of Trump’s positive COVID test made them feel “happy.” Here are some other examples of the left’s irrational hatred. Many progressives seemed to be taking their cues from Michael Moore, who suggested that the president was faking his illness as some kind of a sympathy ploy. Radical anti-Semite Linda Sarsour tweeted that Trump was using COVID to avoid another debate with Joe Biden. During a press conference, one doctor was asked by a reporter if the president had actually checked into Walter Reed. The implication was that the president wasn’t really sick. Within hours, however, they were accusing the president and the doctors of hiding just how sick the president really was. Radical environmentalist Naomi Klein compared the president to a mass shooter, tweeting, “Trump getting Covid is the epidemiological equivalent of a mass shooting where the shooter opens fire on a crowd and then turns the gun on himself.” When the president drove by well-wishers at Walter Reed, the left attacked him for putting Secret Service agents at risk. Really? For months now, the left has demonstrated its hatred for law enforcement. They want to abolish ICE and defund the police. They have denounced law enforcement officers as the “Gestapo” and “stormtroopers.” When 60 Secret Service agents were injured protecting the White House, there were no statements from Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer condemning the violent behavior that put those agents at risk. There were no statements of concern for their well-being. For months now, leading Democrats and the media have suggested that any drug or vaccine developed by the Trump Administration to protect us from the coronavirus is suspect. For example, Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that any vaccine approved by the administration will have to be approved by his experts before he will allow its use in New York. Others have suggested that they will never take a drug or vaccine developed during the Trump years. The president is taking an experimental drug “cocktail” to combat the coronavirus. Today, reporters are complaining that the drug is in very limited supply yet the president managed to get it. So some are saying we can’t trust a “Trump medicine” while others are asking why everyone can’t get a “Trump medicine.” When crowds gathered outside Walter Reed, sometimes they were cheering and holding up signs. Periodically they stopped and prayed. Left-wing reporters who couldn’t bring themselves to condemn violent riots described happy, praying Trump supporters as “a total circus.” My friends, I want to reiterate that the left doesn’t just hate Donald Trump. They hate you. They hate your values and they hate anyone who stands up for them and our country. Don’t ever forget what the left did to George W. Bush, to John McCain, to Sarah Palin, to Mitt Romney and to Paul Ryan. About Those Ads. . . The Biden campaign announced Friday to great fanfare that it would stop running negative ads while the president was recovering. The media praised Biden for such a magnanimous act. There’s just one problem: They’re still running negative ads on social media. Polling Propaganda Well, the poll is garbage. It is propaganda. It is just more evidence that Big Media are manipulating the polls to demoralize conservatives. It’s their way of meddling in our elections. The poll dramatically oversampled Democrats. So much so that it assumed turnout this November would favor the Democrats more than it did in Barack Obama’s historic 2008 election! By the way, a NBC/Wall Street Journal poll around this time in 2016 also found Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by double digits. Register Now! America is at a tipping point. Why Court-Packing Would Be Devastating to Our Republic
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 10:22 PM PDT by GianCarlo Canaparo & Thomas Jipping: President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett on Sept. 26 to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “If Republicans confirm Judge Barrett,” tweeted Sen. Edward Markey, D-Mass., in response, “end the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court.” In other words, if at first you don’t succeed, rig the rules. Numerous other Democratic politicians have either explicitly expressed their support for this or said that “everything is on the table,” including Sens. Kamala Harris, Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse, and Mazie Hirono, as well as Reps. Nancy Pelosi, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Joe Kennedy, and many others. When asked during the Sept. 29 debate whether he supported packing the Supreme Court, presidential candidate Joe Biden said, “I’m not going to answer the question.” His running mate, Harris, has also avoided the question recently. It’s important to understand both what “court packing” would require and how its impact would be felt. Keeping the judiciary separate from manipulation by the political branches was one of the reasons for American independence from Great Britain. Chief Justice William Rehnquist once described judicial independence as the “crown jewel of our system of government.” That jewel is easy to admire until its results don’t fit your politics. Court-packing refers to changing the structure of the judiciary to add judges deemed likely to render favorable decisions. We’ve been here before. After his landslide reelection in 1936, President Franklin Roosevelt proposed creating and filling additional judicial positions so that the Supreme Court would uphold, rather than strike down, his New Deal legislation. Even though Democrats enjoyed enormous Senate and House supermajorities in the 75th Congress (1937-38), they rejected Roosevelt’s court-packing plan. The Judiciary Committee report on the bill said such court-packing’s “ultimate effect would undermine the independence of the courts” and “expand political control over the judicial department.” The report’s arguments apply as much today as they did more than 80 years ago. Court-packing is simply “an attempt to change the course of judicial decision” by “neutralizing the views of some of the present members.” Disagreeing with some judicial decisions, however, does not justify destroying the judiciary itself. “It is far better,” they said, “that we await orderly but inevitable change of personnel than that we impatiently overwhelm them with new members.” Once court-packing destroys judicial independence, it cannot be restored. Court-packing is no small project. Many people are surprised to learn that while the Constitution created the Supreme Court, Congress determines its size. With the exception of five years during the Civil War period, the court has had nine members since 1837. In a 2019 National Public Radio interview, Ginsburg said that nine “seems to be a good number” and opposed court-packing because it would undermine “the safeguards for judicial independence, [which] are as great or greater than anyplace else in the world.” To ensure that legislation to change the Supreme Court’s size is not only passed but signed into law, court-packers would have to control both houses of Congress and the executive branch. More than that, they would have to change the legislative process itself. The Senate is designed for deliberation, with rules that allow the minority to have a significant voice. Rule 22, for example, requires 60 votes to invoke cloture, or end debate, on a bill. A group of senators lacking the votes to defeat final passage of a bill might still be able to get their way by preventing any final vote at all. Failure to end debate is a filibuster. The filibuster has been part of the Senate’s legislative process since the turn of the 19th century. In fact, the opportunity for extended debate has been called the single most distinctive feature of the Senate since it was established in 1789. Under the current rules, as long as 41 senators vote against ending debate on a court-packing bill, it could not pass the Senate and could not become law. This is why Markey, Harris, Schumer, Warren, and many others want to “end the filibuster.” They want to lower the number of votes needed to end debate from 60 to a simple majority, the same as necessary for passing a bill. While changing the actual words of Senate rules requires a supermajority, changing the “interpretation” of those words requires only a simple majority using the so-called nuclear option. As abolishing the filibuster would undermine the Senate’s role as a careful deliberating body, packing the court would undermine its independence, and together these tactics would change the nature of our constitutional government. With the court’s independence gone, it would take on an even larger role in deciding fraught political questions than it does now. The temptation for a successive president whose party enjoys majority control in the House and Senate to pack the court further would likely be irresistible. In a short time, the judiciary could largely supplant Congress as the chief legislative body. Legislative and constitutional questions would be decided, undecided, and re-decided with every swing of the electoral pendulum. No government so unstable could last. Packing the court will only ever yield short-term political victories at the cost of the long-term health of our republic. Canceling Race Theory
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 09:16 PM PDT by Kerby Anderson: When the Trump Administration decided to cancel federal training sessions on Critical Race Theory, you knew there would be criticism. What may be surprising is how easy it might be to respond to that criticism. For example, deans of University of California law schools signed an open letter criticizing President Trump and his administration. And then David Marshall wrote an open letter to these professors. Here are the first two points in his lengthy letter. First, the professors say they write with “one voice.” Marshall asks whether such “unity of opinion should trouble you?” Nearly all professors in the humanities and social sciences at American universities are left-wing. He also quotes one law professor who talks about how descriptions on positions were rewritten when the best applicants were right-of-center. No wonder these deans can speak with one voice. The liberal, progressive voice is usually the only one allowed. Second, they complain that Trump decided to “ban federal employees from learning about Critical Race Theory through trainings.” Marshall responds that any federal worker can buy copies of White Fragility and meditate on the book over the weekend. Why should the citizens of the US pay to train federal employees in a controversial theory? Here is an even more relevant question. Why should we even be teaching critical race theory when it rests on neo-Marxist ideas? Lest you think that is too strong a statement, I would recommend you take a moment and read just one of the many articles being written by evangelical Christians on this race theory. Pastor John MacArthur has written about theological errors of Critical Race Theory. Professor Doug Groothuis also provides a powerful critique of Critical Race Theory. We shouldn’t be teaching this race theory, and certainly shouldn’t have US taxpayers paying for it. What?? Oh, for crying out loud, Mr. McCabe, just testify online. That’s how your colleague Jim Comey disgraced himself, so why can’t you do the same?I know the virus is highly contagious, but if it spreads via Zoom, we’re all in big trouble. On the other hand, I guess that would give Biden an excuse to get back to his knitting and not make any more appearances during the campaignAnyway, over the weekend, Maria Bartiromo on FOX NEWS SUNDAY reviewed what we’ve learned in recent days about Hillary Clinton and, yes, President Obama concerning their involvement in the Russia hoax. Of course, my readers already knew about this, but Maria’s guests had additional details.Rep. Kevin McCarthy noted what a colossal waste of time the “Russia” investigation has been, focusing on a fake story when we’ve been trying for so long to get the real story. He said that when the letter from Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to Sen. Lindsay Graham was released, leaders of Congress wanted to have a meeting about it right away, because in all this time no one in either the House or Senate had seen this information. “This should drive every member of Congress,” he said, “to go get the underlying information that John Ratcliffe has just made transparent to the world.”Looking back now, the timeline of events is just tragic. In July of 2016, key people are briefed on a story that Russian intelligence have picked up that Hillary’s campaign was creating a false narrative about Trump “colluding” with Russia to take attention off her own scandal, which involved the use of a personal email server for all her official State Department business. Then-CIA Director John Brennan personally briefs President Obama and others of this on July 26. “Crossfire Hurricane” is conveniently (for Hillary) opened just a few days later, on July 31. When former FBI Director James Comey is asked about this briefing last Wednesday, he says it “DOESN’T RING A BELL.” We know this is a lie. Investigating a major presidential candidate for being an agent of Russia is a huge deal, the details of which are not something that would simply escape one’s memory, unless perhaps we’re talking about Joe Biden’s memory. McCarthy calls this “the biggest news that didn’t get reported.” True, last week was a big week for news, but there was plenty of time before the report that Trump had tested positive for COVID-19 to get it out there. So, how was this information hidden from Congress (and the rest of us) for so long? Why did we appoint a special counsel when it was known even by Obama the previous year that the “Trump/Russia” story was part of Hillary’s election strategy? Maria brought up another story we reported last week about CIA Director Gina Haspel still blocking the declassification of certain documents. Her own sources, Maria said, had told her Ratcliffe wants to see much more material declassified but that Haspel “does not want the spotlight on the CIA.” Well, that’s just too bad, CIA. McCarthy was followed by Devin Nunes, who made a great point: When Republicans in the legislative branch tried to find out where the “Russia” story came from, Comey and his colleagues didn’t seem to know. But now we have evidence that they absolutely knew, four years ago! And there’s quite a lot more evidence that Congress still hasn’t seen. “Here you have the media,” he said, “which is the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party…ignoring all of this for the last four years…so here they’ve been blaming Republicans having something to do with Russia when the whole damn time, THEY had something to do with Russia.” In other words, it was the Democrats who were hiring Russian spies, not the Republicans. Here is where Nunes spoke for all of us, by saying, “Every Republican, senator and member of Congress, should be saying, “THIS IS OVER. WE WANT EVERY DAMN BIT OF EVIDENCE THAT EVERY INTELLIGENCE AGENCY HAS, OR IT’S MAYBE TIME TO SHUT THOSE AGENCIES DOWN. BECAUSE, AT THE END OF THE DAY, OUR LIBERTIES ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANYTHING ELSE WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY, AND THEY HAVE BEEN STAMPEDED OVER BY THESE DIRTY COPS AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY AND THE MEDIA WHO FAILS TO REPORT ON IT.” Finally, former acting Director of National Intelligence Ric Grenell also appeared with Maria, saying, “We’ve had a scandal developing…largely because politicians have allowed individuals to hide information to create a false narrative by one side.” He characterized what Comey said in testimony this week as “really shocking,” because Comey is blaming mid-level career FBI people for what really came from the top down. There were voices who, early on, characterized this story as Russian propaganda, but the leadership “decided to hide those warnings,” and now Comey (protected by Democrat vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee Mark Warner of Virginia, Grenell alleged) is blaming those same people. “This is what happens,” Grenell said, “when the insiders maintain control over all the information, and this is why I believe that President Trump as the outsider is being viciously attacked because he’s getting close to really changing the way that Washington works and they do not want the rules changed…” He added that this is why the insiders support Joe Biden. They know he’ll play by their rules. As Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas lectured Comey on Wednesday, what he did “has done severe damage to the professionals and the honorable men and women at the FBI, because law enforcement should not be used as a political weapon. And that is the legacy you’ve left.” TDS IS A SAD DISEASE So over the past few days, with Trump briefly out of commission, they had to struggle, but they came through. There were accusations that Trump wasn’t really sick and is just faking this to get out of debating Biden again (you know, the guy Trump keeps trying to talk into more debates.) But there are also accusations that Trump is much sicker than we’ve been told because the White House says he’s doing well and they’re “LYING LIARS WHO LIE!” One “journalist” tried to prove that Trump isn’t really working by tweeting a photo of Trump signing a document that he claims is blank, as if you could actually tell that from a fuzzy vidcap taken from 15 feet away. I’m still trying to figure out the point. Even if he did just sign a paper for that photo, he’s still sitting up and signing things, not on a respirator. Oh, well, TDS is a sad disease itself. The press’ desperation to spin everything Trump does as evil even extended to blasting him for putting on a mask and driving in a closed car past the crowds of well-wishers outside to wave thank-you to them. He’s putting police at deadly risk! (Wait, I thought masks worked to prevent the spread of the virus? If not, why are we all still wearing them?) Some even accused him of committing attempted murder and demanded he face criminal charges and be removed from office. Then, they do that every time he puts ketchup on a steak, so I think we can just wave and drive on by them. Trump & Biden Court Catholics
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:26 PM PDT by Bill Donohue: Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on efforts by the Trump and Biden campaigns to court the Catholic vote: The Catholic vote is the religious swing vote and both the Trump and Biden camps know it. This explains their outreach via Catholics for Trump and Catholics for Biden. More important than these campaign efforts is how the two candidates approach issues that are central to Catholicism. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared abortion to be the “preeminent” issue for Catholics. On this score, Trump’s pro-life position is consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Biden, who was once pro-life, is now a champion of abortion-on-demand through term, and is therefore wildly out-of-step with his religion’s position. Trump and the Catholic Church agree that marriage should be the preserve of one man and one woman. Biden rejects the Church’s teaching and supports gay marriages. School choice is favored by the Catholic Church, and Trump is a rabid supporter of it. Biden is opposed to all school choice initiatives. Religious liberty has emerged as one of the most important issues of our day, affecting domestic and foreign policy alike. The Catholic League has tallied nearly 50 instances where Trump has embraced or advanced religious liberty in the past three-and-a-half years. We examined Biden’s record over 47 years of public service and could find almost no instances of his support for religious liberty. He did vote for the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) in 1993, but his recent endorsement of the “Equality Act” and “Do No Harm” effectively vitiates his position: both would seriously undercut, if not neuter altogether, RFRA. Most glaringly, Biden’s support for the Health and Human Services mandate that would force the Little Sisters of the Poor to pay for abortion-inducing drugs in their healthcare plan has led him to be denounced by Catholic leaders, lay and clergy alike. The official Party Platforms offer a revealing look at the way the Trump and Biden campaigns address religious liberty. There are nine references to religious liberty in the Republican Party Platform, all of which are positive statements. The Democratic Party Platform cites religious liberty six times, four times positively and two times negatively. Both Trump and Biden have been praised and criticized by some bishops. This matters less to Trump as he is not Catholic. But it matters greatly to Biden. Cardinal Raymond Burke has said that Biden should not be given Holy Communion because of his pro-abortion record. Some priests have, in fact, denied him the Eucharist, or have warned him not to come to Communion, because of his stance. Bishop Richard Stika called out Biden over the summer. “Don’t understand how Mr. Biden can claim to be a good and faithful Catholic as he denies so much of Church teaching especially on the absolute child abuse and human rights violations of the most innocent, the not yet born.” Bishop Thomas Tobin took an oblique shot at Biden when he observed that there was no Catholic on the Democratic ticket this time. Some bishops have made more veiled-like comments. Bishop Joseph Strickland has spoken out strongly about the election and how the “Sanctity of Life, true marriage between a man & a woman, supporting the nuclear family and sexual morality based on biblical truth” must be paramount. Bishop Thomas Daly has advised those who “obstinately persevere in their public support for abortion, should not receive Communion without first being reconciled to Christ and the Church.” What got Biden into deep trouble with the bishops was his decision not only to support gay marriage, but his willingness to officiate at a wedding between two men. Three leaders of the bishops’ conference, Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Bishop Richard Malone, and Archbishop Thomas Wenski issued a statement that was obviously aimed at Biden. They criticized him for being “a counter witness, instead of a faithful one founded in the truth.” The most recent bishop to call into question Biden’s standing in the Catholic Church—without mentioning him specifically—is Archbishop Samuel Aquila. “It is not possible to be a Catholic in good standing and support abortion or assisted suicide, to promote unnatural sexuality, or to seek to push people of faith out of the public square.” Finally, there is the issue of anti-Catholicism. The Trump administration has never been tagged with anti-Catholicism, but the Biden campaign certainly has. In fact, his running mate, Kamala Harris, made a stunning contribution to this ancient strain of bigotry when she badgered a man being considered for a seat on a federal district court in Nebraska simply because he belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Now we have Humanists for Biden, an off-shoot of Secular Democrats of America, also of recent vintage. The parent group is off to a fast start bashing Catholics. Biden also has in his employ Nikitha Rai, a data expert who believes that Catholics like Amy Coney Barrett, who espouse traditional moral values, should not be allowed to serve on the Supreme Court. It is evident that Biden’s policies on key issues are problematic from a Catholic perspective. Add to this his strained relationship with many priests and bishops, as well as the support he receives from anti-Catholics, and the difference between Trump and him is considerable. Running from “Riot”
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 08:00 PM PDT byPaul Jacob, Contributing Author: Whenever it got started — ancient Sumer, maybe — doublespeak is linguistic legerdemain, a sad sign of modern times. Consider the Associated Press’s recent pronouncement about the word “riot.” Use the meeker word “unrest,” the stylebook editors suggest. “Unrest is a vaguer, milder and less emotional term for a condition of angry discontent and protest verging on revolt.” Nothing like vagueness and timidity to make reporting as crisp and specific as possible. The AP adds: “Focusing on rioting and property destruction rather than underlying grievance has been used . . . to stigmatize broad swaths of people protesting against lynching, police brutality or for racial justice, going back to the urban uprisings of the 1960s.” Why the new recommendation? Well, all that . . . rioting by the swaths of rioters raises the question — if you regard the rioting as politically inconvenient — how not to report it. Of course, one could consistently say both that “policing and the law should be reformed in such-and-such a way” and that “people should not destroy the property and lives of others.” Moreover, violating the rights of others should have a social cost. Criminal activity should be stigmatized. There is a major difference between protesting injustice and committing injustice. Orwell defined doublethink, the method and goal of doublespeak, as “the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them.” Whether a mind can actually do this is debatable. But disguising from oneself and others what we can all see is one way people try. This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob. President Trump Acted Decisively To Save Lives From Covid—When It Mattered The Most
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 07:47 PM PDT by Robert Romano: Earlier this year, President Donald Trump put his whole presidency on the line to slow down the Chinese coronavirus and save as many lives as possible — restricting travel from the hot spots in China and Europe, building up the nation’s testing capacity, producing the ventilators we needed, deploying the military to expand hospital resources, and expediting production of vaccines and treatments. The first case arrived in the U.S. on Jan. 15 in Washington state, but was not identified until Jan. 20, three days after the second reported death in Wuhan on Jan. 17. Jan. 20, was also the day when China finally confirmed human-to-human transmission, more than a month after the outbreak began. The high death rates that are now common knowledge were not yet realized, yet on Jan. 24, China would lock down Wuhan and the surrounding region while still allowing international air travel out of the region. Then on Jan. 25, Li Wenliang, the first doctor to treat the virus who tried to warn the world about it died in China — raising awareness of the lethality of the virus and demonstrating China was covering it up. On Jan. 28, Hong Kong closed its border with China. On Jan. 29 the New England Journal of Medicine reported the virus was likely in Wuhan since at least mid-December. Airlines were already suspending flights to China. And President Trump was acting decisively. On Jan. 29, the President appointed the White House coronavirus task force. The State Department evacuated U.S. citizens from Wuhan. On Jan. 31, he suspended all travel from China, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar declared a public health emergency, with any U.S. citizen returning from China was subjected to a mandatory quarantine. At that point only a few hundred people had died in China based on public reports, although now in hindsight, the numbers must have been much, much higher. It was not until Feb. 11 that the worldwide death toll would surpass 1,000. Italy would not report its first death until Feb. 21 as Iran and South Korea starting seeing an uptick in cases. On Feb. 26, Vice President Mike Pence was named the head of the task force. By Feb. 29, Washington state declared a state of emergency when the U.S. reported its first death in there, and the nursing home outbreak at Life Care Center of Kirkland began. Travel from Iran was suspended. The next two weeks saw states declaring states of emergency as cases began popping up elsewhere. On March 11, President Trump suspended travel from Europe. And then on March 13, President Trump had declared a national emergency and joined the coronavirus task force press briefing to present the administration’s public-private partnership for drive-thru testing for the virus. The emergency declaration expedited lifting Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restrictions to approve treatments for the virus and to begin producing a vaccine, six of which are now in the third stage of human trials. By then, President Trump was fully in command of the issue, calming public fears. States followed in with cancelling schools and stay at home orders coming thereafter. Now, 105.9 million tests have been conducted at a clip of about 1 million per day now and rising, according national data compiled by Covidtracking.com. Test positivity is currently at about 5 percent, way down from its April peak of over 20 percent and August at 8 percent, according to John Hopkins University and Medicine. On March 27, the President signed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, extending unemployment benefits, shoring up 5 million small businesses supporting 50 million jobs, supporting critical industries including airlines, sending checks to taxpayers, replenish national stockpiles, prepare schools for reopening, providing a lifeline to state and local governments and ramping up hospital resources. By April, 25 million jobs would be lost according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ household survey, but with President Trump’s leadership on the CARES Act, the U.S. to begin one of the most rapid recoveries in economic history. As coronavirus cases subsided, 14.1 million jobs have already been recovered through September since labor markets bottomed. On April 2, the U.S. ramped up production of ventilators as President Trump invoked the Defense Production Act in time such that everybody who needed a ventilator suffering from COVID-19 got one. This addressed a shortfall that a 2015 paper published in Clinical Infectious Diseases predicted the potential supply shortage in the event of an influenza pandemic. In 2020, the U.S. under President Trump’s leadership acted with time to spare and is now exporting ventilators to countries that need them. On April 8, responding to requests from governors and mayors, the Army Corps of Engineers began building field hospitals in states that were experiencing an uptick in cases. The U.S.N.S. Comfort and the U.S.N.S. Mercy were deployed to New York and Los Angeles, respectively. On May 15, President Trump announced Operation Warp Speed was announced as a public-private partnership between the Departments of Health and Human Services, Defense, the Centers for Disease Control and pharmaceutical companies to produce, test, manufacture ahead of time tens of millions of doses and immediately distribute a coronavirus vaccine to the American people as soon as one is approved. So far, there are six candidates already in production, four of which are in phase three clinical trials, with hopes expressed by Dr. Anthony Fauci that one could be approved by 2021, if not sooner. On Aug. 6, President Trump issued an additional executive order on “Ensuring Essential Medicines, Medical Countermeasures, and Critical Inputs Are Made in the United States.” The order makes it the policy of the U.S. to “accelerate the development of cost-effective and efficient domestic production of Essential Medicines and Medical Countermeasures and have adequate redundancy built into the domestic supply chain…” All together, the progress that has been made in less than a year is incredible—and President Trump has been the driving force to protect the lives of the American people. Now, the President and First Lady Melania Trump face their biggest challenge yet after testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 1. The President has been admitted to Walter Reed Hospital. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said, “Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days. President Trump appreciates the outpouring of support for both he and the First Lady.” Upon learning of the news, Americans for Limited Government President Rick Manning issued a statement: “Our prayers are with the First Family today for a speedy recovery from the Chinese-originated virus. Prayer works. Today our entire nation, no matter their political affiliation should join together in praying for their rapid recovery. Get well Mr. President and First Lady, get well.” Early in the pandemic, public health officials and professionals were projecting that as many as 2 million Americans would die if nothing was done. Instead, so far, 196,000 have tragically died. That’s still too many, but without the leadership of President Trump and his administration, it would have been many more. While the President and First Lady battle the virus, the nation can take comfort and confidence that President Trump acted resolutely — when it mattered the most. Could It Happen Here? The Parallels Between Soviet Bloc and Modern US
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:56 PM PDT by Rob Bluey: Disturbing parallels can be drawn between the United States and the Soviet bloc of Eastern Europe, commentator and bestselling author Rod Dreher says. Dreher, a senior editor at The American Conservative, received a phone call in 2015 that sent him on a journey to investigate whether America is losing its freedoms in the same way that Eastern Europe lost its liberty to the Soviet Union. What he found inspired his latest book, “Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents.” [We] discuss the book and what the future may hold if Americans do not stand against the agenda of the radical left. Rob Bluey: We are joined on “The Daily Signal Podcast” today by Rod Dreher, author of the new book, “Live Not by Lies: A Manual for Christian Dissidents.” Rod, it’s great to have you. Thanks so much for joining us. Rod Dreher: Glad to be here, Rob. Bluey: First, congratulations on the success of the book. It’s already a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon and it’s certainly provoking some much-needed discussion about the situation that we face in America today. I was struck by your introduction and the interviews you’ve done. You talk about embarking on this project after receiving a phone call from a complete stranger. Can you tell us what it was about that call that alarmed you and led you to write “Live Not by Lies“? Dreher: Sure. This was back in 2015 just before the Obergefell ruling. And your listeners might remember that the state of Indiana passed a state version of the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act and it caused corporate America to come down with like a ton of bricks on the state of Indiana. In particular, there was a little evangelical pizza parlor, evangelical-owned pizza parlor, in small-town Indiana where a TV reporter went and asked the owners, “Would you cater a gay wedding?” And they said, “No, that would be against our conscience. We would serve gay customers. We wouldn’t cater a gay wedding.” That led to this little pizza parlor receiving hatred from all over the country—death threats, threats of burning them down—and they had to shut the place down. Well, that sort of thing prompted a phone call from a prominent physician in Minnesota. He called me and said that his elderly mother had been watching all this on TV and told him, “Son, the things I’m seeing happen here in this country now remind me of what I left behind in Czechoslovakia.” Now, he said his mom is an immigrant to this country, that when she was a young woman, she was put in prison for six years in Czechoslovakia for her Catholic faith. And the fact that this woman in her last years in the land of the free is seeing things happen here that remind her of what she left behind was pretty chilling. And the doctor called and said, “Look, I don’t know you, but I feel like I need to tell somebody.” Well, Rob, what I did after that was I thought, “This sounds pretty alarming, but my mother’s old too, watches a lot of cable news. Maybe the old lady is really kind of exaggerating.” So I started checking with people I know who immigrated from or defected in one case from the Soviet bloc and asked them, “Is this Czech lady, is she seeing things as they are?” Every single one of these people, Rob, said, “Absolutely.” They’re seeing the tyranny of woke culture and cancel culture rise in this country. And they say they can’t believe that Americans won’t pay attention to them and don’t see what’s happening. Bluey: You said you received that call in 2015 and here we are, fast forward to 2020, five years later, did you imagine at that time and as you’ve worked on the book that we would find ourselves in the situation that we do today in America? I mean, it seems that so much has just transpired in the last five years and frankly, that warning has come true. Dreher: Yeah, it was prescient. Look, not only the last five years, Rob, but the last five months. When I finished the manuscript for this book and turned it into my publisher back in early March, I remember thinking, “How am I going to sell this to people? How am I going to convince my fellow Americans that what these people who survived communism are seeing happen in this country really is true?” Because we don’t like to be alarmed, but then came COVID and then especially came George Floyd and the ramping up of militant wokeness has just been off the charts. By the time this book came out this week, I thought, “You know what? I don’t need to convince people.” All you have to do is watch TV, follow the news online, and you can see that what these anti-communist dissidents are saying really is true. Bluey: You mentioned that in order to write the book you spoke to men and women who had once lived under communism, and we’ve had the opportunity to tell some of those similar stories right here on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” And I know that they are incredibly powerful voices. Was there a common theme that you heard from them and something that you want to share with our listeners in terms of their warning? Dreher: Yeah. The second half of my book “Live Not by Lies” is filled with stories from people in Russia and the former Eastern bloc nations telling about what they’ve been through and giving advice to Americans. The two most important pieces of advice that I believe they had to offer was, first of all, the importance of solidarity, small group solidarity. I didn’t expect this before I went over there, but over and over again I heard that this kept people from going crazy. Just being around other people, even small numbers of people who could see the truth and who are not willing to suffer for the truth really kept them hopeful. I dedicate the book to a man named Father Tomislav Kolakovic, a Croatian Catholic priest who was doing anti-Nazi work in Croatia in the 1940s. He got a tip that the Gestapo was coming after him. He escaped to Slovakia, his mother’s homeland, and began teaching in the Catholic university there, 1943. Father Kolakovic told his young Catholic students, “The good news is the Germans are going to lose this war. The bad news is the communists are going to be ruling this country when it’s over and they’re going to come for the church. We’ve got to get ready.” So what Father Kolakovic did was put together small groups of really dedicated young Catholics, maybe come together for prayer, for study, and also to learn the arts of resistance, like how to endure an interrogation. And they spread … these groups all around the country and built a network. Now, the Catholic bishops at the time said to Father Kolakovic, “Look, you’re being unreasonable. You’re being alarmist.” But Kolakovic had trained in the Vatican for missionary work in the Soviet Union. He understood the Soviet mindset. And sure enough, when the Iron Curtain came down, the communist government came after the church, just as he had predicted. But the underground groups of small committed Christians became the backbone for the underground church for the next 40 years. So small groups are hugely important. A second lesson, this is the most important one, Rob, of the whole book is that we have to learn how to suffer well. Every single one of these people—I remember one, I talked to one man in Moscow whose face was still partially paralyzed from the beatings he received in a Soviet prison—they all said that if … Christians and everybody, frankly, if they’re not willing to suffer for the truth and for their faith, if they’re not willing to suffer the loss of status, the loss of their jobs, the loss even of their freedom, and maybe even the loss of their lives for their faith and for the truth, they’re not going to make it through what’s coming. And this is, I think, the real neuralgic point of soft totalitarianism. The soft totalitarianism that’s coming takes advantage of our love of comfort. That’s where we’re really weak. Bluey: Well, I want to get to soft totalitarianism in just a moment, but to pick up on what you just said, Rod, I heard you talk about this on Tucker Carlson’s show recently and it really struck me that we have in some ways become really soft and comfortable in the United States. I’m wondering if there are things that we should be not only preparing for, but different ways in which these other people that you spoke to talked about, how as Americans we might prepare for what’s to come and how do we not become so soft and comfortable in this situation that we find ourselves in today? Dreher: Well, look, all of us in America, myself included, we are really soft and fat and happy because we’ve been free and prosperous for so long. Then we’ve lulled ourselves, especially among conservatives, into thinking that it couldn’t happen here in the land of the free and the brave that eventually the good people of America are going to stand up to all this. Well, look, I hope it happens too, but we can’t count on it, especially when we look at the research on that that has come out about millennials and Generation Z, about how little they know about communism and how little they value free speech and freedom of religion. So I think we need to prepare ourselves for the fact that it could cost us our jobs to hold onto our faith. The first thing we need to do is get red-pilled in a way and to see things as they are and see things as these refugees from communism see them, just so we won’t be surprised when this stuff hits. And secondly, we need to start building these networks of mutual support, prayer support, as well as material support for when the day comes when our people start losing their jobs. It’s important to get these networks in place right now, Rob, because, as Father Kolakovic said, we have to use the time when we’re free to prepare because the day’s going to come when we won’t have those freedoms. Bluey: So, Rod, you recently wrote that “America is sleepwalking into soft totalitarianism.” You mentioned this before. You also said, “If we ignore the prophetic voices of those who survived communism, we deserve what we get.” You’ve described this soft totalitarianism [as] something other than what we traditionally think of with totalitarianism. Can you unpack it for us and explain what you mean? Dreher: Sure. In America, our idea of totalitarianism is conditioned by our memory of the Cold War and Soviet persecution, as well as George Orwell’s “1984.” In the Orwellian, Soviet, Stalinist society, the state controlled people by inflicting pain and terror on them. But in the soft totalitarianism that I see coming here, the state will control people—and not only states, but even more importantly, corporations and institutions like universities will control people by manipulating their access to the economy and to status and to all the markers of middle-class life. They won’t need the gulags to force conformity on us. We’ll do it because we can’t stand the idea of losing our jobs. And look, I don’t mean to make light of that. It’s huge to lose your job, it’s massive, but this is how it’s going to happen. We see it happening right now. J.D. Vance yesterday, I was doing a webinar with him. J.D. Vance told me that friends of his who are liberals are already scared to death of what they can and can’t say in their workplace. This is not the state. This is not [President] Donald Trump coming and telling them they can’t do that. These are their companies doing it. And this is their fear of victims who have the power to accuse others. It’s still totalitarian even if it’s not the state doing it or the secret police doing it. The fact is people are changing their ways of living. They’re terrified of what they can say and do because they are afraid of getting on the wrong side of this ideology. Call it hard, call it soft, but that’s what’s happening. Rob Bluey: Yeah, no, we have seen it firsthand. I mean, The Daily Signal has published things … just recently an article on climate change fact-checked by somebody at Science Feedback and Facebook and a video produced on some of the issues regarding transgenderism via video with a doctor, a pediatrician talking about some of the dangers associated with giving a young children puberty blockers, blocked on YouTube. So we’re seeing it firsthand ourselves. And you write in the book that the United States could soon have its own version of China’s high-tech social credit system. I’d like you to explain more of that, but you also talked about cancel culture, the rush to condemn others’ views that might not align with your own people, losing their jobs, businesses. This is really a frightening situation, I think, to many Americans and for those who haven’t faced it directly, certainly something that they need to be prepared for. Dreher: Oh, sure. And one of the things that I heard over and over again from these people who lived in the communist countries is that the state would whip up mobs against people to harass them, to drive them out, to make them fear for their lives, all to uphold a totalitarian ideology. So when this woman, this elderly Czech woman, saw this cancel culture mob coming from Memories Pizza, she knew what she was looking at, but this wasn’t something sent by the state. Again, this is something arising out of social media, arising, in some cases, out of universities and out of major companies. One thing that we don’t see as Americans because of our outdated model of what totalitarianism is, we have no idea how big business, the role of the big business and corporations, especially in Silicon Valley, play in propagating this totalitarianism. Because we still have our mindset on, “Oh, well, if it’s not coming from the government, it’s not totalitarian.” That’s just not true. Bluey: And in recent months we’ve certainly seen corporations, sports teams, universities, and the media embrace things like Black Lives Matter, the 1619 Project, and critical race theory. It’s been dominating so much of our culture of late. We’ve also seen a forceful pushback though. I mean, Black Lives Matter recently scrubbed its website of its Marxist beliefs and The New York Times quietly edited the 1619 Project. President Trump just banned critical race theory from federal government offices. But at the same time, it seems like it’s a constant battle we’re in. Do you have any encouragement about the recent pushback we’ve seen from Americans? And what are some of the other steps and advice that you have for them and what they can personally do about it? Dreher: Sure. Well, yeah, I’m really encouraged by what President Trump did with critical race theory and that’s thanks to the tireless efforts of Christopher Rufo to bring it to his attention and bring it to the nation’s attention. And I think these things are fantastic. We ought to stand up and speak out now no matter what it costs us because the more we speak out now and pressure our politicians to speak out against it—I hope the Republican Party will find a spine and start speaking out against this sort of thing—the better off we’ll be. But I don’t want people to have false hope and to think that this is merely a political problem, that if we just get the right politicians in there and the right judges in there, it’s all going to be settled. It’s not. This is something that’s coming primarily from the culture and it’s coming from elite culture. That’s such an important factor because, as I learned in my research about totalitarian movements, they always start with an elite. They never go anywhere until and unless the intellectual and cultural elites see them first. This is what happened in Bolshevik Russia and this is what’s happening here. You have to pay attention to what’s taught in the universities because these people in the universities becoming radicalized, they’re marching through the institutions of society, through museums, through major corporations, and so on and so forth, and through the media. And they are imposing their woke totalitarianism on the rest of us. It’s not going to stay only in the elites, but that’s where it starts. Rob Bluey: Rod, I’m so glad that you brought that up. I graduated from journalism school nearly 20 years ago at a very liberal college, Ithaca College, in upstate New York. And sadly, I saw then professors guiding students in this direction. Now I think many of them are probably in leadership positions at these media companies and we’re seeing the consequences of that—not just in the media, as you said, but across the landscape. That’s one of the reasons why I decided to help create The Daily Signal. I think it’s one of the reasons you wrote “Live Not by Lies” and why you do the type of journalism that you do. So when it comes to the media specifically, it seems like there’s great frustration and also a lack of trust with the media. But what are some of the other things that we as conservatives or Christians should be thinking about doing and using our platforms to spread this message? Dreher: Yes, and thank God for The Daily Signal and for Tucker Carlson and for alternative media. Right now, we have the liberty to spread the message and we should. We should never let up on it because we have to wake our own people up. And even sympathetic liberals, Rob, who are suffering now, they never thought they would. They thought they were on the right side, but you can never stay on the right side of the woke. They’re going to come after sympathetic liberals too. I’ve been trying to tell some of my conservative friends, “Look, if you’re not listening to Joe Rogan, you need to be listening to him. You need to be listening to Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying and James Lindsay and Bari Weiss, people like that.” We need to form these networks and alliances even outside of the conservative sphere because we’re all going to have to stand together. If we don’t stand together and fight while we can, we will hang separately. Bluey: Rod, I’d like to shift for a moment to talk about the role of faith and religion. You write in the book that we’re living in a post-Christian world. And I personally see this and the growing number of young people who don’t believe, and also in the hostility toward those who have Christian beliefs. I think you can look no further than the attacks on Judge Amy Coney Barrett and what she’s facing. She awaits her confirmation hearings before the Senate. Why should this be of concern to us, these attacks on faith? Dreher: I say the Amy Coney Barrett nomination has been what I call an apocalyptic moment. Now, the word “apocalypse” in the original Greek means an unveiling. What it has unveiled is the deep contempt, the incomprehension as well as contempt that so many in this culture have for faithful Christians. Somebody like Amy Coney Barrett would have been completely par for the course 20 years ago in most of America. And even still in a place like where I live, Louisiana, she still lives, but not in the elite centers and not, sad to say, even among young people in red America. So, I think that Christians are seen and will be seen as the last obstacle barring the completion of the sexual revolution. I think about back in 2016, Rob, when an influential evangelical ethicist named David Gushee, when he flipped from being against same-sex marriage to being for it. He wrote a really prophetic column warning fellow Christians that this issue is going to find you wherever you are. You will not be able to be neutral about it. And Gushee believed that Christians should change their mind on it, should accept LGBT in all possible ways. He said that the only obstacles in the way to full LGBT acceptance are conservative Christians. And right there is the answer that you’re looking for. Most conservative Christians I know, like myself, we don’t hate LGBT people, but we also can’t bend on something that we believe is true. And we’re going to pay the price for that in this country and we need to be ready for it. Bluey: In the book you quote Pope Benedict and you talk about this as a profoundly anti-Christian militancy. It really is shocking … and discouraging in some respects to see the poll numbers of those who don’t believe or who have walked away. But also, I want to ask you about this because I had a personal experience just recently. I was shocked to hear a sermon from a rector promoting the concepts of critical race theory. So it’s not just the lay parishioners, but it’s also the church leaders who are promoting it. What’s your advice to people of faith as we work within our own Christian communities to help fellow believers confront some of the lies that we’re being told on a host of these issues? Dreher: Man, that is so depressing, but it’s true. I’m hearing this from a lot of my conservative evangelical friends, that wokeness and, [in] particular, critical race theory is cutting right through their communities. Well, I think we have to educate ourselves about what critical race theory actually teaches and why it cannot be reconciled with biblical Christianity. Racism is wrong. Racism is evil, no doubt about it. But what critical race theory does is it teaches a form of thinking about race and the human person that is based only on racial identity. And that’s not what Christianity teaches. Christian social justice is creating a society in which everybody can live out the kind of life that God wants for them to live out, to flourish as fully human. But critical race theory and those theories of social justice see society as nothing but an arena of power and struggle for power. And they draw the line between good and evil, not down the middle of every human heart, as Solzhenitsyn said and as the Bible says, but rather between different groups, between whites and blacks, between gays and straights, and so on and so forth. Critical race theory and so-called anti-racism really does come to the church disguised as an angel of light because every Christian ought to be against racism, but this is really, really a lie. Rene Girard, one of the great intellectuals of the 20th century, died a few years ago. He said that when antichrist comes that he would try to, or an anti-Christian philosophy would try to, be more Christian than the Christians. And I think that’s exactly what we’re seeing in critical race theory. It reminds me, Rob, frankly, [of] what you said of what I was told by so many of these Christians in the Eastern bloc. They said most Christians capitulated to communism. The ones who withstood it were only those who could understand, who could read the signs of the times, understand what they were dealing with, and had the faith and the small faith communities that enabled them to resist. Bluey: I think that’s such great advice and an important thing to remember, Rod. Your book, “The Little Way of Ruthie Leming,” about your younger sister’s battle with cancer had a profound influence on my life and the things that we should cherish. Growing up in a small town, myself in upstate New York, they certainly connected with some of the things that you wrote in that book. I want to thank you for writing it, I’ve always wanted to do that, and telling such a deeply personal story. As the parent of three kids myself, I’m obviously worried about their future. And I would like to ask for what your advice is to parents in particular. How can we raise our children to be critical thinkers and avoid some of the problems that you warn about in “Live Not by Lies“? Dreher: Boy, thank you so much for asking that question. There’s a whole chapter in my book about the family as a locus of raising resilient dissidents. I profiled the Benda family of Prague. They were a strong Catholic family who raised six kids under communism. The patriarch Vaclav was a good friend of Vaclav Havel and he went to prison himself for four years, but the family not only resistant communism, but in what is now one of the most atheist countries in Europe, the Czech Republic, they’re all still Christians and their children are Christians. How did they do it? Well, I talk about this in the book. One of the key things that they did, and this really struck me, was they not only raised their kids to be critical of the society that they were in and how to spot evil in the society that they’re in. And they taught them the importance by word and by deed, by example, the importance of being morally courageous. But they also filled their imaginations with the true, the good, and the beautiful. I asked the mother, Camilla, who is now quite old, I said, “So what did you do to help your kids with this?” She said, “Well, even when my husband was in prison, I would read to my kids for at least two hours a day. I would read them things like fairy tales and classical literature because they needed to understand what was good. They couldn’t just be against something. They had to be for something good and true and beautiful.” She said, “I read them a lot of Tolkien.” I said, “Oh, that’s interesting. Why Tolkien?” She looked at me, Rob, and said, “Because we knew that Mordor was real.” So that really shook me up and made me realize that, again, it’s not sufficient just to tell your kids what’s bad in the world and what they shouldn’t do, but we have to fill their moral imaginations with the good, the true, and the beautiful so they will have something to draw on. More practically, I would say, take the smartphones away from your kids. That is one of the worst things you can do for them is let them have smartphones. They’re so many conservatives I know, conservative Christians, who hold all the correct opinions about who the villains are on the culture and so on and so forth, and yet they give their little kids smartphones. That is just setting them up for a disaster. Bluey: Well, Rod, thank you for sharing that advice. I will take it to heart and I’m sure our audience will as well. I want to encourage you to check out Rod’s book. It’s called “Live Not by Lies.” Rod, I also want to give you the last word on today’s interview. Any closing thoughts you’d like to share about the book or other things that you’d like to pass along? Dreher: I end the book on a really hopeful note. I talked to a young man in Bratislava, a young photographer named Timo Krizka, who was a toddler when communism fell. So he was raised in freedom. He had privileges that his parents and grandparents couldn’t have imagined, but he said he was really unhappy in all this because he never could seem to get enough success or get enough money. He started a project where he went around his country talking to elderly people who had been in the gulag for their faith and just trying to find out what their experiences were like. Timo told me that he realized that these people who even today didn’t have much of anything, … they were so serene and so happy because their time in prison had taught them that there is nothing more important than the love of God. And Timo said even though he lives in freedom and prosperity, it really taught him how to focus on the good things in the world. The things that are transcendently good and true, most of all his faith. And this is a lesson that all of us need to hear. Even if we’re not going to be thrown into a prison for our faith, we could still lose our faith if we don’t understand that there is something transcendent about it and that we have to be willing to sacrifice everything we have for the love of God. Bluey: Rod Dreher, thanks so much for sharing that with us. The book is called “Live Not by Lies.” Again, I encourage you to check it out. Rod, thanks so much for joining us on “The Daily Signal Podcast.” Dreher: Thanks for having me, Rob. It was great. How Satanism & Democrats Found Each Other
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 05:56 PM PDT by Mario Murillo Ministries: When Hillary announced she was running for President, Christians began fasting and praying for her to be defeated. But when Trump announced his bid for the White House, a vast number of witches and occultists began casting spells and curses on him. What a contrast! When Democrats heard God mentioned from their platform at their 2016 convention, they began booing. What I am writing you about, is the fact that Democrats and leftists have gone way beyond this. They are now joining the Temple of Satan. Here’s what leftist attorney Jamie Smith wrote in the Huffington Post: “I am a 40-something attorney and mother who lives in a quiet neighborhood with a yard and a garage full of scooters and soccer balls,” Smith said. “I often walk with my children to get ice cream and spend weekends hiking through a national park. I am not the type of person who would normally consider becoming a Satanist, but these are not normal times.” “We should, however, analyze Smith’s argument seriously, as her claims and their implications paint a troubling picture of the dangerous ideology pervading today’s left,” said Kylee Zempel in her article The Satanic Temple Is In Fact Emblematic Of The Leftist Worldview. She goes on to say about Jamie Smith, “Smith assured her readers that, not to be confused with the Church of Satan, The Satanic Temple doesn’t actually worship him. Most of the temple’s adherents are atheists, viewing Satan as a symbol of rebellion. According to Smith, members reject the supernatural in favor of reason. ““Like other religions,” Smith went on to say, “members of The Satanic Temple adopt a set of beliefs. In this case, its seven tenets, which include that people “should strive to act with compassion and empathy” and that “one’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone. Finally, Smith couches the murder of the unborn in typical Democrat-speak, justifying killing babies, which is human sacrifice as practiced by Satanic cults, as a “right,” thus: “Everyone who cares about women having autonomy over their bodies should care about efforts to use religion to chip away at this right. We need to think outside the box to challenge what is coming and what is already here. The Satanic Temple is already doing that, and by becoming one of its members, I believe I have joined a community of people who will stop at nothing to safeguard my family’s rights― and all of our rights― when they are at their most vulnerable.” Three times Smith refers to wanting the ‘right’ to exist “for her daughters” to kill their own offspring. The Left has descended into something that they do not even understand. When you hear me say this election is a choice between good and evil, be assured, I took great pains to study Democrats before making that assertion. What Democrats don’t realize is that there is no safe version of Satanic involvement. They have taken the embodiment of evil—the devil—and made him a revolutionary hero. Moreover, they do not understand the urgent difference between Satanism and Christianity when it comes to the supernatural. To become a Christian and receive the Spirit of God you must make a conscious surrender. With Satanism and the occult no such precondition exists. In other words, if you dabble with any form of the occult, even playing with a Ouija board as a joke, you will invoke demonic activity, and you must repent of it, renounce it, and you will need to be prayed for, for deliverance. Even when Democrats are atheists, if they practice Satanism, they have invited supernatural evil into their midst. “This principle, which the Satanic Temple articulates and Smith affirms, absolves the rioters who are pillaging America’s cities under the guise of “social justice.” It supports illegal social programs that promote a so-called oppressed group, while discriminating against another group. It exonerates election fraud by those who reason that the “fascist” President must be removed from the White House by any means necessary. This idea reeks of moral relativism and guarantees lawlessness. “To adopt a tenet such as this is an interesting response to the death of a Supreme Court Justice and an interesting way to cope with the fear that one’s legal ‘rights’ will be infringed. If equity is greater than the law, how does the Constitution fit in? If justice ‘should prevail over laws and institutions,’ there will be nothing left for the Supreme Court, an institution itself, to protect.” Satan has emerged as a hero to leftists. They don’t see the issue. They have been deceived. Seeking justice over law, opens the jaws of hell to a society. Justice can be defined as whatever they want. As soon as they define what they think they want, they can wreck anything to get to it. Justice—perverted and demonically inspired—is how Satanism and Democrats found each other. Now you know why a segment of the Democrat Party is keen to defund the police. Now you know why even mainstream Democrat leading newspapers have written about looting being justified. Now you know why they will not shut down rioters, arsonists, and even killers. Now we know why there is a clear correlation between the demon god Moloch that commanded his worshippers to burn their infants alive, and late term abortion. They are both after justice—social justice… Satan sincerely believes he is fighting for justice against God. Now we know who is giving the Left their definition of ‘justice,’ and now the Left is finally starting to admit it. That is proof that this election is, indeed, a choice between good and evil. No Joe, You Didn’t Hand Trump A Booming Economy
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 02:11 PM PDT “We left a booming economy, ” Biden said during the first presidential debate, “and he caused the recession.” Debate moderator Chris Wallace jumped in to help Biden, adding that job growth was faster in the last three years of Obama’s term than the first three of Trump’s. One is a flat out lie, the other a clever deception. After presiding over the worst economic recovery since the Great Depression, Obama and Biden left office with the economy stalling out, leading experts to warn that the nation was facing “secular stagnation.” Look at the numbers. GDP growth sharply decelerated in 2016, falling from 3.1% the year before down 1.7% in 2016 – the second-worst year under Obama/Biden after the recession ended and the third year of below 2% growth on their watch. Other indicators were equally distressing. Small business optimism had been on the decline before the November 2016 election. Business investment was stagnant. The rate of growth in blue-collar jobs was falling. In Obama’s last year, the unemployment rate remained basically unchanged — it was 4.9% in Jan 2016, and 4.8% when Trump took office in Jan. 2017. Real median family income didn’t budge from August 2015 to November 2016, according to Sentier Research. The stock market had been flat for more than a year. Here’s now the New York Times described the economy that Obama and Biden were leaving behind: “For three quarters in a row, the growth rate of the economy has hovered around a mere 1%. In the last quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016, the economy expanded at feeble annual rates of 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively. The initial reading for the second quarter of this year, released on Friday, was a disappointing 1.2%.” The Times warned that “the underlying reality of low growth will haunt whoever wins the White House.” The economy was so tepid when Obama and Biden were packing their bags that economists started to warn of “secular stagnation” – meaning permanent slow growth. As CBS News put it at the time: “With U.S. economic growth stuck in low gear for several years, it’s leading many economists to worry that the country has entered a prolonged period where any expansion will be weaker than it has been in the past.” Does any of this sound anything like a booming economy? But what about the oft-repeated claim – repeated by Chris Wallace during the debate – that “in Obama’s final three years as president more jobs were created. A million and a half more jobs than in the first three years of your presidency.” Doesn’t this show that the economy was doing better under Obama? No. To understand why, some context is needed. Under Obama, job growth in the recovery was unusually slow – slower in fact than every major recession before it. During the Reagan recovery, for example, annual job growth averaged 2.7%. Under Clinton, it averaged 2.4%. But under Obama, the average annual growth in jobs was just 1.5%. The only thing that grew fast under Obama was the number of people who’d dropped out of the labor force. That number climbed by almost 15 million. Nevertheless, by the time Trump took office, the recovery was going on eight years. Under normal circumstances, job growth slows as and expansion gets long in tooth. And that’s what everybody expected. At the start of 2017, the Congressional Budget Office released its 10-year economic forecast, which reflects the consensus of economists at the time. The CBO figured that the number of jobs created between January 2017 and December 2019 would be 2 million. The unemployment rate, the CBO predicted, would be at 4.7% – and rising. Actual number: 3.5%. Keep in mind that when the CBO made those forecasts, it was under the assumption Obama’s economic policies remained in effect. What’s more, economists were saying that the economy was at “full employment” by mid-2017. CNBC, for example, reported in June of that year that “At 4.3%, the unemployment rate has gone well below where anyone expected it and is likely to improve only modestly if at all from here. ‘Our findings suggest that the labor market has already slightly overshot full employment,’ Goldman Sachs economist Daan Struyven said in a report for clients.” In other words, nobody expected job growth to be anywhere near as strong has turned out to be under Trump. So, it’s fair to say that the economy under Trump created 4 million more jobs than would have been the case if Obama’s policies had remained in effect. Biden recently compared Trump to Nazi propagandist Joseph Goebbels, saying “you say the lie long enough, keep repeating it, repeating it, repeating it, it becomes common knowledge.” When it comes to the economy, it is Biden, not Trump, who is employing Goebbels’ technique. And the mainstream press, including Chris Wallace, are lending him a hand. Dems’ Recusal Demands Are ‘Another Totally Invented Standard’
Posted: 05 Oct 2020 06:45 AM PDT
SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH McCONNELL (R-KY): “Here’s another one of the made-up attacks: Democrats are demanding that Judge Barrett commit in advance to recuse herself from entire categories of cases, for no reason. This is another totally invented standard. Nobody has ever suggested that Supreme Court Justices should categorically sit on the sidelines until the President who nominated them has left office. Justices Ginsburg and Breyer were confirmed during President Clinton’s first term. Justices Sotomayor an d Kagan were confirmed during President Obama’s first term. All four of these Justices went on to participate in election-related proceedings while the President who’d nominated them was on the ballot. And Justices Breyer and Ginsburg participated actively in Clinton v. Jones and other matters connected to President Clinton’s eventual impeachment. In fact, they urged and attempted to get the Supreme Court even more involved. (Sen. McConnell, Remarks, 10/01/2020)
It Is Widely Accepted That Justices Participate In Cases Important, Even Personally, To The Presidents Who Nominated Them’ “It is widely accepted that justices participate in cases important, even personally, to the presidents who nominated them. Three of President Richard M. Nixon’s nominees joined the unanimous court ruling against him in the decision requiring him to turn over White House tapes in a criminal investigation…. Likewise, Clinton nominees Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer were on the unanimous court that found Clinton had to answer Paula Jones’s lawsuit that accused him of sexual advances.” (“As Trump Cases Arrive, Supreme Court’s Desire To Be Seen As Neutral Arbiter Will Be Tested,” The Washington Post, 11/26/2019) “[Justice Stephen] Breyer said it has to be a very high bar for a justice to step back. ‘If you’re in a court of appeals and you’re uncertain, you know, it’s a sort of borderline, take yourself out of it,’ Breyer said. ‘Because there are a lot of other judges who can step in.’ But on the Supreme Court, ‘If you take yourself out of a case, it could affect the result. And therefore, you have to be careful on the one hand to take yourself out of the case if there is an ethical conflict of some kind, and not to take yourself out of the case if there isn’t, because you have to participate.’” (“Exclusive: Justice Stephen Breyer On Politics And The Rule Of Law,” Axios, 3/22/2020) Early voting in Ohio: Before the election, the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America obtained an injunction that prevented the State of Ohio from imposing certain limits on early in-person voting. See Obama for Am. v. Husted, 697 F.3d 423 (6th Cir. 2012). Ohio submitted to Justice Kagan an application to stay the injunction, which Justice Kagan referred to the full Court. On October 16, 2012, the Supreme Court denied the application, ruling in favor of the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America. Both Justices Sotomayor and Kagan participated. See Husted v. Obama for Am., 568 U.S. 970 (2012). Campaign contributions in Montana: After several Republican-affiliated organizations obtained an injunction that prevented Montana from enforcing its campaign contribution limits during the run-up to the election, the Ninth Circuit stayed the injunction, fearing that it could throw the “imminent” election into “chaos.” Lair v. Bullock, 697 F.3d 1200, 1214 (9th Cir. 2012). The Republican-affiliated organizations filed an application to vacate the stay, but on October 23, 2012, the Supreme Court denied the application. Both Justices Sotomayor and Kagan participated. See Lair v. Bullock, 568 U.S. 974 (2012). Voter registration in Texas: In late September 2012, the Ninth Circuit stayed an injunction that had prevented Texas from enforcing various restrictions on voter registration conducted by third parties. See Voting for Am., Inc. v. Andrade, 488 F. App’x 890 (5th Cir. 2012). The Supreme Court denied an application to vacate the stay on September 25, 2012. Both Justices Sotomayor and Kagan participated, and Justice Sotomayor stated that she would have granted the application in part. See Voting for Am., Inc. v. Andrade, 567 U.S. 967 (2012) Ballot access in Michigan: Shortly before the election, the Sixth Circuit refused to grant emergency relief that would have ordered the State of Michigan to place Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for President, on the Michigan ballot for the election. See generally Libertarian Party of Mich. v. Johnson, 714 F.3d 929, 931 (6th Cir. 2013). Johnson and the Libertarian Party submitted to Justice Kagan an application for similar emergency relief, which was opposed by the Republican Party of Michigan. Justice Kagan referred the application to the full Court, which denied the application on September 19, 2012. Both Justices Sotomayor and Kagan participated. See Libertarian Party of Mich. v. Johnson, 567 U.S. 966 (2012). Proof of citizenship in Arizona: In the summer before the election, the en banc Ninth Circuit rejected an Arizona policy that imposed heightened requirements for establishing the proof of citizenship necessary to vote. See Gonzalez v. Arizona, 677 F.3d 383 (9th Cir. 2012) (en banc). The Supreme Court denied Arizona’s application to stay the decision of the Ninth Circuit. Both Justices Sotomayor and Kagan participated. See Arizona v. Abeytia, 567 U.S. 947 (2012) Election judges in Texas: In October 1996, Dallas County changed its method for appointing the election judges that would supervise polling precincts during the upcoming election. The new method was challenged for allegedly violating the Voting Rights Act, but a 3-judge panel rejected the challenge. See generally Foreman v. Dallas Cty., 990 F. Supp. 505, 507–508 (N.D. Tex. 1998). The challengers filed an application for an injunction and stay, but on October 29, 1996, the Supreme Court denied the application. Both Justices Ginsburg and Breyer participated. Foreman v. Dallas Cty., 519 U.S. 957 (1996) “Clinton nominees Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer were on the unanimous court that found Clinton had to answer Paula Jones’s lawsuit that accused him of sexual advances.” (“As Trump Cases Arrive, Supreme Court’s Desire To Be Seen As Neutral Arbiter Will Be Tested,” The Washington Post, 11/26/2019) Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer both participated in Clinton v. Jones in 1997. “Clinton nominees Ginsburg and Stephen G. Breyer were on the unanimous court that found Clinton had to answer Paula Jones’s lawsuit that accused him of sexual advances.” ((“Clinton v. Jones,” Oyez.org, Accessed 10/01/2020) In a 1998 case, Office Of The President v. Office Of Independent Counsel, the Supreme Court declined to take the case, but Justices Breyer and Ginsburg both dissented, arguing the Court should have heard the case. (“OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT v. OFFICE OF INDEPENDENT COUNSEL,” Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute, 11/09/1998) In another 1998 case that the Supreme Court declined to hear, Robert Rubin, Secretary Of Treasury, et al. v. United States, Justices Ginsburg and Breyer both dissented, arguing the Court should have heard the case. (“ROBERT RUBIN, SECRETARY OF TREASURY, et al. v.UNITED STATES, through the independent counsel,” Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute, 11/09/1998) JUSTICE GINSBURG: “I agree with Justice Breyer that this Court, and not a Court of Appeals, ought to be the definitive judicial arbiter in this case. The matter is grave …” (“ROBERT RUBIN, SECRETARY OF TREASURY, et al. v.UNITED STATES, through the independent counsel,” Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute, 11/09/1998) In 1997, Justices Ginsburg and Breyer joined the other justices in declining to take up a different Office of the President v. Office of Indep. Counsel case. 512 U.S. 1105 (1997) President Obama nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan as the nation’s 112th justice, choosing his own chief advocate before the Supreme Court to join it in ruling on cases critical to his view of the country’s future.” (“Obama Picks Kagan As Justice Nominee,” The New York Times, 5/09/2020) “When the Supreme Court announced Monday that it will review President Barack Obama’s health care reform law this term, Justice Elena Kagan gave no indication that she will recuse herself from the cases the court plans to hear.” (“No Sign Elena Kagan, Clarence Thomas Will Recuse On Health Care Law,” Politico, 11/14/2011) “The charges against Kagan arise from her work as solicitor general, the government’s top appellate lawyer. If she were still in the job, Kagan would be defending the health-care law at the Supreme Court rather than deciding whether it is constitutional. Kagan was notified by the White House in March 2010 — just before the law was passed — that she was under consideration to be named to the high court. She said during her confirmation hearings that she played no role in preparing for the inevitable legal challenges that were to come.” (“Health-Care Case Brings Fight Over Which Supreme Court Justices Should Decide It,” The Washington Post, 11/27/2011)
“But … e-mails released… under public records requests raise questions about the White House’s contention she had been ‘walled off’ from discussions about the health-care act. One e-mail from then-Deputy Solicitor General Neal Katyal says Kagan wanted to make sure her office was involved in strategy decisions, although Katyal said he took the lead and Kagan was not involved.” (“Health-Care Case Brings Fight Over Which Supreme Court Justices Should Decide It,” The Washington Post, 11/27/2011) “Another e-mail seemed to indicate enthusiasm for the bill. In response to a message at the time of the vote from Harvard law professor Laurence H. Tribe, then working at the Justice Department, Kagan wrote: ‘I hear they have the votes, Larry!! Simply amazing.’” (“Health-Care Case Brings Fight Over Which Supreme Court Justices Should Decide It,” The Washington Post, 11/27/2011) ELENA KAGAN: “I attended at least one meeting where the existence of the litigation was briefly mentioned, but none where any substantive discussion of the litigation occurred.” (“Health-Care Case Brings Fight Over Which Supreme Court Justices Should Decide It,” The Washington Post, 11/27/2011) Justice Elena Kagan subsequently participated in two major Supreme Court cases on the Affordable Care Act, NFIB v. Sebelius in 2012 and King v. Burwell in 2015. (“National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius,” Oyez.org, Accessed 10/01/2020; “King v. Burwell,” Oyez.org, Accessed 10/01/2020) Further, Justices Named by Presidents Obama And Clinton Participated In Hundreds Of Cases In Which Presidents Clinton Or Obama Were A Named Party Justice Ginsburg participated in at least 79 cases in which President Clinton was a named party. Justice Breyer participated in at least 74 cases in which President Clinton was a named party. Justice Sotomayor participated in at least 102 cases in which President Obama was a named party. NBC MORNING RUNDOWN
Tuesday, October 6, 2020
|
Good morning, NBC News readers.
President Donald Trump returned to the White House on Monday evening, downplaying the virus that put him in the hospital for three nights and has killed more than 200,000 Americans.
Here’s what we’re watching this Tuesday morning.
|
‘Maybe I’m immune’ to Covid-19, Trump says in video after return to White House
President Trump returned to the White House on Monday evening after being treated for Covid-19 for three days at Walter Reed Medical Center — and immediately took off his mask to pose for pictures before walking inside.
The highly choreographed moment on the Truman Balcony came hours after Trump tweeted: “Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life.”
Doctors, scientists and public experts were outraged by the president’s comments downplaying the virus that has killed more than 211,000 people in the United States, according to NBC News latest count.
And the majority of Americans — 65 percent — are still very much afraid of the virus and are worried about someone in their family being exposed to it, according to the latest NBC News | SurveyMonkey Weekly Tracking Poll.
But the president was more interested in projecting an optimistic and confident image of a man who’d beaten the virus.
“I learned so much about the coronavirus,” he said in one of two campaign videos he filmed on his arrival back at the White House. He described the top-of-the-line treatment he’d received as proof the virus could be contained. “Now I’m better. Maybe I’m immune. I don’t know,” Trump said.
Earlier in the day Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Conley, said that the president had improved enough to go home, but added the 74-year old “may not be entirely out of the woods yet.”
Some medical experts questioned Trump’s speedy exit from the hospital, saying the first seven to 10 days of the illness are a critical period when things can quickly take a turn for the worse.
And despite Trump’s jubilant return to the White House, the mood inside the West Wing was less triumphant as Covid-19 infections continue to spread among staffers, NBC News’ Shannon Pettypiece reports.
“Folks are dropping like flies over here,” a White House official said. “S— is very crazy.”
Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany was the latest in a string of Trump administration aides and allies who have tested positive for Covid-19 in recent days. The White House has become a center for a coronavirus outbreak affecting low-level aides to senators and some of Trump’s closest advisers, like former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who is in a hospital.

Biden says wearing masks should be seen as a ‘patriotic responsibility’
Meantime, in a town hall with NBC News’ Lester Holt in Miami on Monday night, Democratic nominee Joe Biden said that Trump bears some responsibility for contracting Covid-19.
“Look, anybody who contracts the virus by essentially saying masks don’t matter, social distancing doesn’t matter, I think is responsible for what happens to them,” said Biden.
The former vice president said that wearing masks and social distancing should be seen as a patriotic duty and that “masks matter.”
“All the tough guys say, ‘I’m not wearing a mask, I’m not afraid.’ Well, be afraid for your husband, your wife, your son, your daughter, your neighbor, your co-worker. That’s who you are protecting having this mask on.”

Trio win Nobel Prize for physics for groundbreaking black hole discoveries
Scientists Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez were awarded the Nobel Prize for physics on Tuesday for their groundbreaking discoveries about black holes.
Their work has helped reveal “the darkest secrets of the universe,” said Secretary-General Göran K. Hansson for the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Ghez, an American astronomer, is the fourth woman to ever win the prize in physics.
“I hope I can inspire other young women into the field,” Ghez told a news conference by phone.
Prizes in chemistry, literature, peace and economics will be announced over the next week.

THINK about it
Trump tweeting “don’t be afraid of Covid” is a betrayal of my father’s memory, co-founder of Marked by COVID Kristin Urquiza writes in an opinion piece.

Quote of the day
“I think in his desire to try to demonstrate that we are somehow coming out of this and that the danger is not still with us — I think he got out over his skis and, frankly, I think it’s a lesson to all of us that we need to exercise self-discipline.”
— Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said to The Houston Chronicle’s editorial board about Trump’s attitude toward the coronavirus.

One fun thing
Researchers off the coast of Nova Scotia found a nearly 2-ton great white shark believed to be roughly 50 years old, dubbing her the “Queen of the Ocean.”
The shark, named Nukumi by researchers, is more than 17 feet long and weighed in at 3,541 pounds.
“When you look at all the healed-over scars and blotches and things that are on her skin, you’re really looking at the story of her life and it makes you feel really insignificant,” said Chris Fischer, head of OCEARCH, the non-profit marine research organization that found the huge shark.

NBC FIRST READ
|
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Carrie Dann and Melissa Holzberg
FIRST READ: As Trump dismisses the virus again, Biden stands with a cautious majority
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: President Trump is on the wrong side of public opinion when it comes to the coronavirus.
And now exactly four weeks until Election Day, he’s allowed his opponent – Joe Biden – to be on the right side.
REUTERS/Erin Scott
Before being released from Walter Reed on Monday, Trump tweeted that the public shouldn’t be afraid of the coronavirus, and he repeated that message in a video after returning to the White House:
“I know there’s a risk, there’s a danger. But that’s okay. And now I’m better, and maybe I’m immune, I don’t know. But don’t let it dominate your lives.”
But 65 percent of Americans say they’re very or somewhat worried that they or someone in their family will get the virus, according to a new NBC News|SurveyMonkey online tracking poll.
After returning from the White House, Trump took off his mask, despite still being potentially infectious.
Yet 85 percent say they wear a mask every time or most of the time when they leave their house and are in contact with others, per the same NBC New|SurveyMonkey poll.
Conversely, at last night’s NBC News town hall with Lester Holt, Joe Biden was on the side of taking the virus seriously, of being socially distant, and of wearing masks.
“Masks matter. These masks, they matter. It matters. It saves lives. It prevents the spread of the disease,” Biden said. “I hope no one walks away with the message thinking that [the coronavirus] is not a problem.”
NBC’s Mike Memoli summed up that exchange this way: “First block, in a nutshell: Biden-Mask 2020.”
It’s possible that today’s national CNN poll showing Biden ahead by 16 points is wrong. And ditto our national NBC/WSJ poll, which has Biden up 14 points.
But what if they’re more right than wrong?
It’s hard to win a race when you’re this far removed from public opinion on combatting a virus that’s killed more than 200,000 Americans – as well as when you’re this far removed from what the public considers acceptable presidential behavior at a debate.

108.83 million: The number of coronavirus tests that have been administered in the United States so far, according to researchers at The COVID Tracking Project.
57 percent to 41 percent: Biden’s lead in the latest head-to-head national poll by CNN

2020 VISION: More on last night’s town hall with Biden
Here were some other answers from Joe Biden at the town hall Monday night with NBC’s Lester Holt:
On last week’s debate with Trump: “If you notice, not one single time that I can recall did he offer a substantive answer or criticism related to a policy matter. It was all invective… And I did get very frustrated. I did get frustrated. And I should have said, this is a clownish undertaking, instead of calling him a clown.
On what he’d do if a conservative Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade: “The only responsible response to that would be to pass legislation making Roe the law of the land. That’s what I would do.”
On how you bring civility back to politics: “My point is you stop questioning motive. You go out and you debate the issues. Because we’ve all gotten down to the point where everything is about attacking the integrity of the other person.”
On the Trump campaign in Florida linking him to socialism: “I look like a socialist? Look, I’m the guy that ran against a socialist. Remember, I got in trouble with the whole campaign, 20-some candidates? Joe Biden was too centrist, too moderate, too straightforward. That was Joe Biden.”
On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden delivers remarks in Gettysburg, Pa., where he will talk about bringing the country together.

AD WATCH from Ben Kamisar
Today’s Ad Watch looks at how Joe Biden is responding to recent polling showing him underperforming with Latino voters.
While Biden has held a clear, consistent lead in most polling, there have been some trouble spots for him with Hispanics.
After the Democrat traveled to the Miami area for campaign events (including a town hall with our own Lester Holt as well as a trip to Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood), the Biden campaign released a new Spanish-language ad aimed at shoring up that underperformance.
The new spot centers on his running mate, Kamala Harris, pointing to her story as a “daughter of immigrants” and showing her marching at rallies as proof she will stand for “women, immigrants and DREAMers.”
The campaign also appears to be back running a spot it released earlier in the cycle, one that evokes Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor and labor leader Dolores Huerta as examples of the American dream before pivoting to Biden’s economic record.

THE LID: The more things change…
Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we asked whether the whirlwind of news events in the last week would move the 2020 numbers
|
ICYMI: What ELSE is happening in the world?
Here’s what a variety of doctors have to say about the decision to discharge Trump from Walter Reed.
Biden declined to criticize Trump’s doctors or a lack of transparency about the president’s health last night, but he also said he was not surprised that Trump contracted the virus.
Concern is growing for White House residence staff — who are largely Black and Hispanic and have little choice but to show up to work.
The White House says it WON’T do contact tracing for the Rose Garden event suspected of sickening lawmakers.
Some Trump advisors hoped his illness would provide fodder for a political reset. He’s now undermined that chance, the New York Times writes.
The White House is blocking FDA guidelines that could delay approval of a vaccine.
The Supreme Court sided with Republicans on a dispute over ballot witness requirements in South Carolina.
Biden is mounting a late fight for Miami.
Wednesday’s VP debate will now feature plexiglass barriers.
