His approval is up to 43 percent, tying the highest CNN has had him at since March, 2017 (CNN).  Meanwhile, some rules are now in place.  CNN notes “Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell gives House impeachment managers and the President’s legal team 24 hours each to make their opening arguments over two days. The resolution raises the prospect that the trial will have 12-hour days and go late into the night, according to a copy of the resolution obtained by CNN” (CNN). How things are likely to go today (Fox News).  From Congressman Doug Collins: An impeachment supported by only one party is a failure. Refusing to proceed in a bipartisan manner reveals the Democrats’ lack of thoroughness and seriousness and, above all, their lack of compelling evidence. This impeachment is antithetical to the letter and spirit of the Constitution and, as the speaker would have agreed until recently, deeply damaging to the country (WSJ).

2.Biden: Don’t Arrest and Deport Illegal Immigrants Unless They Commit a Felony
If they are caught driving drunk, he says let them stay (Washington Examiner).  Interesting coming from a man who falsely claims his wife and daughter were killed by a drunk driver (Washington Times).  Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders apologized to Biden for a surrogate’s op-ed (CBS News).  One story claims Joe Biden is “the king of the sweetheart deal, with no less than five family members benefiting from his largesse, favorable access and powerful position for commercial gain. In Biden’s case, these deals include foreign partners and, in some cases, even US taxpayer dollars” (NY Post).

Which an NBC reporter called a “white supremacist rally” (Daily Caller).  From Tim Carney: For starters, NBC News reporter Ben Collins, again, he’s a reporter, not an opinion writer, flatly and falsely called the demonstration a “white nationalist rally” in a tweet calling on everyone covering it to “verify information” before tweeting it out. Collins has deleted the smear-tweet, but you have to consider the nature of the error (Washington Examiner). From Governor Ralph Northam, after the obviously peaceful protest:  We are all thankful that today passed without incident. The teams successfully de-escalated what could have been a volatile situation. I will continue to listen to the voices of Virginians, and will do everything in my power to keep our Commonwealth safe (Twitter).  From Erielle Davidson: The 2A is for everyone. The media stoking a race war over a rally that brought Americans from all creeds together is quite telling. The media does not care for American society. They want to watch it burn (Twitter). From David Harsanyi: If things keep up this way, the last person heard spouting violent rhetoric in Richmond will have been Northam when he explained how to kill inconvenient babies (Twitter). One individual, who some believe was a plant, tried to stir up violence but the crowd told him to get lost (PJ Media).  AOC is shocked that there weren’t more police at the protest (Twitter).

Tuesday, January 21, 2020Good morning and welcome to Fox News First. Here’s what you need to know as you start your Monday …Trump defense team gets last-minute reinforcements as Senate impeachment trial is set to begin
After an opening salvo of back-and-forth arguments from President Trump’s attorneys and Democrats’ impeachment managers on Monday, Senate impeachment trial proceedings are set to begin at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday with the expectation they will stretch well into the night on Capitol Hill — even as key procedural questions, including the timeline for debate and whether additional witnesses will testify, remain undecided and hotly contentious. In a surprise move Monday night, a group of high-profile House Republicans announced that they would formally join the president’s legal team, including Reps. Doug Collins, Mike Johnson, Jim Jordan, Debbie Lesko, Mark Meadows, John Ratcliffe, Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin. The last-minute show of force underscored the fluid nature of the Senate trial, which is also set to feature full-throated arguments against impeachment from constitutional scholar Alan Dershowitz and Bill Clinton independent counsel Ken Starr.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell revealed Monday that he wanted a condensed, two-day calendar for each side to give opening statements, at 12 hours per day. After the four days of opening arguments, senators would be allowed up to 16 hours for written questions to the prosecution and defense, followed by four hours of debate. Only then would there be votes on calling other witnesses, likely next week. Much of Tuesday’s proceedings will focus on debate over McConnell’s proposed resolution for the parameters for the impeachment trial. Click here for more on our top storyStay with Fox News for complete live team coverage of President Trump’s impeachment trial on all platforms.Other developments in Trump’s impeachment:

A fourth person has died in an outbreak of a new coronavirus in China, authorities said Tuesday, as more places stepped up medical screening of travelers from the country as it enters its busiest travel period. The increased control measures followed a sharp rise in the number of infections to more than 200 people since last month, with epidemiologists still uncertain of its nature and mode of transmission.Chinese health authorities confirmed late Monday that some cases had been transmitted person-to-person, a development that means the illness could spread faster and more widely, particularly at the start of the Lunar New Year travel rush. Click here for more.

THE DISPATCH

The Morning Dispatch: The Impeachment Trial BeginsPlus, an exclusive look at Trump administration in-fighting over nuclear program funding.Steve HayesJan 21Happy Tuesday! For better or worse, this newsletter is going to feature a decent amount of impeachment news over the next several weeks. We’ve tried to shield you from as much meaningless partisan bickering as we could, but the Senate is finally getting to the meat and potatoes of the thing. Don’t worry, we’ll continue to supplement with plenty of other interesting stories.Just the third impeachment trial the country has ever witnessed—we’re living through history!Quick Hits: What You Need to KnowPresident Trump’s impeachment trial begins today.Mitch McConnell laid out the proposed ground rules for the Senate trial in a four-page resolution last night. Impeachment managers and President Trump’s legal defense team will each have 24 hours split over two days to make their respective cases, and the Senate will have to vote to admit evidence from the House’s investigation. The White House named eight Republican House members to the president’s impeachment team.CNN released a poll showing 51 percent of respondents in favor of Trump’s conviction and removal compared with 45 percent opposed. Also, 69 percent of respondents believed the Senate trial should include testimony from new witnesses, and 26 percent said it shouldn’t.And Away We Go!President Trump’s impeachment trial gets under way in earnest today in the Senate. But it wasn’t until last night that we finally got a real sense of what the affair will look like.On Monday evening, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled the proposed rules that will govern the trial. They’re designed to move things along quickly. After a full day of procedural wrangling today, the House will present its full case beginning Wednesday afternoon. It will have 24 hours to do so, spread over two session days. The White House will then be allotted the same amount of time. Afterward, the Senate will question the parties for up to 16 hours. As we wrote in Friday’s Morning Dispatch, last week’s hot impeachment topic concerned whether McConnell was likely to allow the Senate to subpoena its own witnesses or to consider new evidence that has cropped up since the House filed its articles of impeachment. McConnell’s proposed rules guarantee neither. In fact, in a move that has Democrats howling, the proposed Senate rules will not even permit the House’s evidence to be entered in the Senate trial without a separate vote—and that only after the question of whether to subpoena new witnesses has already been disposed of, following the presentation of both sides’ arguments. All of this is catnip to the president’s legal team, which revealed portions of its impeachment strategy on Monday as well. In a lengthy legal brief, they called for a speedy rejection of the House’s charges, and indicated that Trump’s substantive defense remains simple: The president did nothing wrong, and convicting him would be not only a gross miscarriage of justice but also a blow that would “permanently weaken the presidency.”“House Democrats have not presented any evidence that the president made any linkage between either a meeting or the security assistance and the investigation that House Democrats claim,” an official working with the president’s legal team told reporters on a White House conference call Monday. “The facts show that the president was not pressuring anyone to do anything about any investigation.”The White House will rely heavily on McConnell to keep things running smoothly and quickly, as many of the arguments they are preparing to make will require the Senate to admit no additional evidence if they are to function. Case in point: On that same call, the official argued that the impeachment was preposterous because Trump had not broken any law.“To impeach a president, to remove a president from office, an impeachable offense has to be a violation of established law,” he said. “So anything that you might describe, that you might call an abuse of power because you think that it was bad, and that it wasn’t the right use of power, that’s not sufficient. There has to be a violation of established law.”But wait a minute—didn’t an independent oversight body, the Government Accountability Office, just determine that the White House did break the law by withholding military aid from Ukraine? The official’s response: “It’s not in the articles of impeachment. We’re going to trial on a specific set of charges … The charging document doesn’t include anything about that GAO report. So in our view, that’s not properly part of the accusation that’s been brought to the Senate.”One more interesting note on Trump’s legal team: The White House announced Monday night that several House Republicans who defended him fiercely during House impeachment proceedings, including Jim Jordan, Doug Collins, and Elise Stefanik, will assist his legal team during the trial. The announcement brought an end to a weeks-long, behind-the-scenes squabble between Trump, who loved the idea of bringing his gung-ho House defenders on board, and GOP senators who winced at the idea.Among those to whom the announcement was apparently news: some of those House Republicans themselves. Earlier Monday, one of your Morning Dispatchers asked a spokesman for Jordan whether they were still expecting to play a role at the trial. “Doesn’t appear so,” he replied, adding that they didn’t think other House Republicans would participate either. When we followed up with him after the White House announcement, the spokesman responded with a “mind blown” emoji. Join nowIt’s Budget Hawks vs. Defense Hawks Over Our Nuclear ArsenalOn the website, Steve has an interesting look at a growing behind-the-scenes fight between defense hawks and budget hawks over the modernization of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Top national security officials have been urgently calling for additional modernization funding for literally decades. But with few exceptions, other priorities have won out. Now, top nuclear experts and Republicans in Congress are warning that time is up. Lisa Gordon-Hagerty, the under secretary of energy for nuclear security and the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), requested $20 billion in funding for her agency in fiscal year 2021. That would be an increase over 2020 funding levels, but well short of what many nuclear experts believe is needed to begin a serious modernization effort. And yet, Gordon-Hagerty’s request was rejected and the White House budget office proposed $17.4 billion. In mid-December, Gordon-Hagerty wrote to her boss, energy secretary Dan Brouillette, with a stark warning. After years of underfunding, Gordon-Hagerty wrote, failing to fully fund NNSA would “seriously risk the nation’s deterrent capability, and put at risk the nation’s status as a superpower … Reductions of this magnitude bring into question our ability to provide a safe and secure and effective nuclear deterrent. At this level of funding, NNSA will need to reduce the size and composition of the stockpile almost immediately.”There is no longer time to put off the long-needed improvements, she argued in the memo. “We have been at a tipping point for years and we will begin managing to failure many parts of the nuclear security enterprise. This reduction will directly reduce the effectiveness of the nuclear deterrent and is essentially unilateral disarmament by the United States of America … A budget of $17.487 billion with a 2.1 percent increase for four years is a $16.3 billion shortfall and will cut NNSA’s modernization program in half. These reductions do not meet the commitments of the policies set forth in the 2018 Nuclear Posture Review, 2017 National Security Strategy and Nuclear Weapons Council requirements.”Gordon-Hagerty’s memo was not well-received. According to three sources with knowledge of the matter, her appeal was rejected and she was instead told by Brouillette (among others) to sign a letter endorsing the lower amount and offering assurances that the NNSA mission could be achieved despite the lack of resources. She was being asked in effect, to lie. She refused.Last week, defense hawks in both chambers of Congress wrote to President Trump requesting a meeting to discuss the funding. They are hoping to get on his schedule when he returns from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later this week. The White House budget is expected on February 11.Says Rep. Liz Cheney, House Republican Conference Chair and a signer of the letter: “Modernizing America’s nuclear forces is crucial to our security. Our adversaries, including Russia and China, are making strides that threaten to overcome the superiority and effectiveness of our nuclear deterrent. President Trump has been clear about his commitment to fully funding NNSA at $20 billion this year with sufficient increases in following years. This shouldn’t even be a debate.” Worth Your TimeFour years ago, Russian hackers pantsed America’s cybersecurity apparatus with a bargain-budget election meddling operation that proved wildly successful—stealing troves of emails from the Clinton campaign and DNC, poking around state election websites for vulnerabilities, and stirring up discord with astroturfed accounts on social media. This time around, are we any better prepared? Andy Kroll examines the question in this fascinating feature for Rolling Stone. Baffled by conflicting media narratives over Monday’s gun rights rally in Virginia? POLITICO Playbook: Why McConnell’s move infuriates Democrats

DRIVING THE DAY

IF WE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL, it’s that he uses the power afforded to him quite liberally, in a way that makes his opponents red with anger and most of his allies gleeful. We’ve seen it during Supreme Court confirmations, and now we’re seeing it with impeachment.

MCCONNELL has orchestrated the Senate trial of President DONALD TRUMP thusly: The president’s attorneys and the House impeachment managers each have 24 hours to use over the course of two calendar days to present their case, condensing the meat of the trial into what could be as short as four days in total. These rules will likely have the Senate in session all night and into the wee hours of the morning, as it tries TRUMP for high crimes and misdemeanors. Another highlight: Evidence gathered in the House investigation must be admitted by vote — nothing is automatic. MCCONNELL announced that he had the support of all Republican senators for his rule package weeks ago, essentially ensuring its passage.

THINK OF IT THIS WAY: This could be all over by sometime next week — ahead of the State of the Union on Feb. 4.

SENATE MINORITY LEADER CHUCK SCHUMER called the resolution McConnell will formally introduce later today a “national disgrace,” and said it’s designed to acquit the president quickly. Burgess Everett and Marianne LeVine on McConnell’s plan for a “speedy trial”… The resolution

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TODAY as the trial gets started:

— IN THE EARLY AFTERNOON, Democrats and Republicans have their party lunches in the Capitol.

— AROUND 1 P.M., MCCONNELL will offer his resolution, which will detail the rules for the Senate’s trial. Each side has an hour for debate.

— AROUND 3 P.M., SCHUMER will move to amend the rule package to allow for witnesses and documents at the front end of the trial. That is also subject to debate for an hour on each side.

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW: How exactly SCHUMER is going to try to amend the rule package. He can force one vote, or multiple votes seeking to amend the package in different ways. Democrats’ priority is to force votes on guaranteeing witnesses and document production as part of the trial. BUT: Democrats’ efforts to amend the package are almost certain to fail.

— ONCE DEMOCRATS finish trying to amend the rules, there will be a vote on the package and the trial will then begin.

DEMOCRATS’ HIVE MIND: The reason they want to try to force witnesses at the front end of the trial is threefold: If a witness is subpoenaed, it will take days to work out a deal for their testimony, so they might as well do it concurrent with the trial; why start hearing arguments and asking questions when you know there could be more information out there? And when the testimony from House managers and Trump’s defense team starts, there is no guarantee Republicans will allow witnesses.

A message from Blue Cross Blue Shield Association:

Today, 90 percent of Americans have health insurance. Let’s close the gap that leaves 10 percent vulnerable, without disrupting coverage and care for millions who already are covered. .

JOHN BRESNAHAN and BURGESS EVERETT: “Here are the five Senate factions that will decide Trump’s fate”: “The Three Amigos, Part Deux: The Republican triumvirate of Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Mitt Romney (Utah) have been the center of a media frenzy for weeks. … The key issue for this moderate group — and maybe the biggest question for the entire Trump trial — is whether there will be a fourth Republican who joins them. The likelihood of that happening is pretty low at this point, however.

“Republican Institutionalists: If Democrats are to get a fourth GOP vote for witnesses, their best bet is from a group of veteran Republicans who believe in protecting the Senate prerogatives or are retiring and thus have less to fear from a vengeful Trump. This group include Sens. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Rob Portman (Ohio), Roy Blunt (Mo.) and Pat Toomey (Pa.).

“Trump Hardliners: [T]here are a number [of senators] — such as Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Ted Cruz of Texas, and Josh Hawley of Missouri, for instance — who have blasted Speaker Nancy Pelosi, House Democrats and the media for a ‘sham impeachment’ that isn’t going to result in Trump’s ouster.

“Democratic Moderates: There’s a small group of Senate Democrats who are in play for GOP leaders and the White House. This group includes Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona. Doug Jones of Alabama, the most endangered Senate Democrat this fall, wants to hear from witnesses, but he has also called for Trump to ‘get a fair trial.’

“Trump Is Guilty Already Democrats: Like the Senate Republican Conference, most of the Democratic Caucus has already made up its mind — Trump is guilty, but let’s get more witnesses and documents anyway — even if they don’t say it publicly. So they’ll loudly back Schumer’s motions for witnesses, they’ll have sharp questions for Trump’s defense team, and they’ll complain mightily when the trial is over that Trump was acquitted by a Republican majority that is interested in political survival rather than the truth. And then they will use this case, and everything Trump has done over the last three years, to try to take over the Senate in November.”

NYT’S ANNIE KARNI with POTUS in Davos: “Before the Senate impeachment trial begins in earnest on Tuesday, President Trump was more than 4,000 miles away from Washington, in this glitzy Alpine village, planning to drive a competing narrative — one that has nothing to do with pressure on Ukraine, abuse of power or obstruction of Congress. …

“Mr. Trump, aides said, planned to highlight the first phase of his trade deal with China and another with Mexico and Canada, accomplishments he thinks are being overshadowed by a focus on an impeachment trial he is trying to dismiss as a ‘hoax.’ And the audience was expected to be friendly — to his face, at least — having warmed to him over the past two years because they have benefited from his policies.” NYT

SIX TICKETS OUT OF IOWA (or more), via Natasha Korecki: “The Iowa caucuses have ended a long line of weak White House bids, traditionally culling the presidential primary field to just two or three viable candidates. But this year’s unique dynamics have a very real scenario shaping up that could mean at least a half dozen — or maybe more — candidates move to New Hampshire and beyond …

“‘If you look historically, only three candidates have come out of Iowa earning delegates in the modern era; there’s never been more than three who have broken the 15 percent threshold,’ said Jeff Berman, a delegate guru now with the [Tom] Steyer team who was a key figure in Barack Obama’s successful 2008 campaign. In 2020, Berman said, ‘There may be more tickets out of Iowa than ever before.’ …

“The probability that Iowa fails to produce a breakout frontrunner and instead sends through more than a half-dozen candidates is the latest turn in a tumultuous primary that began with a historically large and diverse field. It’s indicative of a contest that’s long from settled; with just two weeks until the Feb. 3 caucuses, there’s still a looming question over what, exactly, the Iowa results will mean. Aides with [Amy] Klobuchar, Steyer and [Andrew] Yang indicated that there’s almost no scenario that would cause their candidate to drop out before New Hampshire.” POLITICO

BERNIE’S GOODBYE, via Des Moines Register’s Nick Coltrain: “U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders made a plea Monday to his supporters in Des Moines: It’ll be up to them to carry his Iowa campaign across the finish line.

“The Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump means he won’t be spending as much time in Iowa as he would have liked, he said at a Des Moines rally. But, he joked, it just means his campaign slogan — ‘Not me. Us.’ — will need to be a little more literal in the homestretch of the first-in-the-nation nominating caucus.

“‘Ironically, the “us, not me,” is becoming very much a reality in the last two weeks of this campaign, because I’m not going to be able to be here as much as I would like,’ Sanders told a crowd of more than 750 at the State Historical Museum of Iowa. ‘So you guys are going to have to carry the ball.’” DMR

Trump Adds House Republicans to His Legal Team As He Prepares for Impeachment Standoff

Senate impeachment trial proceedings are scheduled to begin at 1 PM this afternoon following a series of arguments presented on Monday by Trump’s attorneys and the Dems’ impeachment managers. Trump has added a new squad of House Republicans to his legal team, including some of his more vocal defenders: Reps. Doug Collins, Mike Johnson, Jim Jordan, Debbie Lesko, Mark Meadows, John Ratcliffe, Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin.

From Fox News:

“We are not planning for them to present statements on the Senate floor,” a senior administration official told Fox News, referring to the latest additions to Trump’s defense team, headed up by White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and Trump’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow. “The group will continue to give critical guidance on the case because of their strong familiarity with the facts and evidence.”

From Washington Examiner:

“The lawmakers will likely not speak on the Senate floor during the trial, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opposed the idea. Rather, each member will aid Trump’s defense in other ways, which could include speaking to the media and advising the White House.”

AOC Doesn’t Think We Have a Real ‘Left’ in America
In her latest bout of incoherence, NY Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes insists in an interview on Monday that we don’t have a genuinely left-wing party in the United States. In fact, she asserts, our Democrats are a “center” or “center-conservative” party. Her critique appears a sad attempt to normalize what by all metrics would be considered radical policies – from Medicare for All to gun confiscation programs. From Chrissy Clark at The Federalist:

“The current Democratic Party stands for far left-leaning ideas. Every single 2020 Democratic candidate is running on some form of expanded government-issued insurance, whether “Medicare for All” by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, “Medicare for all who want it” by Pete Buttigieg, or expanding Obamacare, as Joe Biden suggests.

These Democrats are also running on removing remaining abortion restrictions, canceling existing student debt, and attempting to establish free college for everyone. These radical proposals are the epitome of far-left ideologies. The Democratic Party isn’t “conservative” in any sense.”

Fearmongering Around Richmond 2A Rally Falls Stunningly Flat
Despite media predictions, fears around the Richmond gun rally did not come to fruition. Instead, what took place in Richmond on Monday was a peaceful gathering of tens of thousands seeking to defend their Second Amendment right. From Brad Polumbo at The Washington Examiner:

“News outlet Axios billed the protest as possibly “another Charlottesville.” As my colleague Timothy P. Carney noted, one NBC reporter called it a “white nationalist rally.” Even the Washington Post’s post-event headline was ridiculously inflammatory: “Weapons, flags but no violence: Massive pro-gun rally in Virginia capital.”

The bias shows liberals in the media took cues from Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, who set off the alarmism by declaring a state of emergency in anticipation of the peaceful rally. He had cited vagaries about “credible threats” but provided no evidence. The gambit was pretty clear: portray Democrats as the sensible folks just trying to pass commonsense gun laws and the Second Amendment supporters rallying against them as radical, dangerous extremists.
This was always baseless. Gun owners tend to be, if anything, statistically more law-abiding than non-gun owners.…Reality reminded us once again that law-abiding gun owners are not the problem.”

The Morning Briefing: Hard to Believe, but AOC Is Getting Even Dumber

The Morning Briefing: Hard to Believe, but AOC Is Getting Even Dumber

Dumber and Dumbest

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been flying a bit under the radar in recent weeks while the Elders of the Democratic village have taken center stage, both in the primary race and the impeachment drama.

There is no doubt that she’s been saying plenty of stupid stuff during that time -- it’s what she does -- but we just haven’t been hearing anything about it.

On Monday, the Democrats’ Ditz Supreme made her presence known again the way that she best knows how -- via nonsensical word barf.

Matt wrote about Ocasio-Cortez’s comments at a Martin Luther King Day event and I’ll just offer a highlight here:

"We don't have a left party in the United States. The Democratic Party is not a left party," she said, receiving applause from the audience. "The Democratic Party is a center or a center-conservative party.”

AOC’s rationale for claiming that the Democrats aren’t leftists is that the most radical of leftist legislation like Medicare for All hasn’t gotten enough traction to satisfy her yet. Matt provides a good list of all of the things that truly do make the party quite left these days.

The integral component to the AOC phenomenon is that the volumes of inanity that issue forth from her mouth remain unchallenged by anyone in the press and her fellow Democrats. She could be on a Sunday news show telling the host that President Trump turns into a bat at night and flies around the country eating the brains of babies and no one on the panel would question her.

Watch the video in the post. She’s being interviewed by some idiot who can merely grunt affirmations to everything she says.

It used to bother me that AOC’s never-ending wrongness was allowed to exist in the world without any correction. Now I see it for the gift to Republicans that it is.

Her constant complaining about the Democrats being conservative, combined with the disproportionate media attention she gets will remain a source of internal strife for Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic leadership.

AOC is the reason that Pelosi got so far out over her skis on impeachment, upping President Trump’s reelection chances by a zillion percent or so.

So let her keep rambling, and may the press never realize that she is a blithering idiot.

By Mike Allen

🗳️ Good Tuesday morning, and welcome back. Iowa caucuses are 13 days away.

Breaking: "With millions of Asians traveling for the Lunar New Year [Saturday], authorities in China confirmed that a new virus could be spread through human contact, reporting 15 medical staff had been infected," Reuters reports:

  • "The chilling update on the coronavirus outbreak ... sent shivers through financial markets."

1 big thing: Fast-tracking impeachment

McConnell's ground rules. Photo: Jon Elswick/AP

As the Senate impeachment trial of President Trump begins in earnest at 1 p.m., Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying to make it as speedy as possible — with days that could run 12 hours or more.

  • Look for very cranky senators. Under the four-page ground rules McConnell's office released at 5:47 p.m. yesterday, senators face marathon sessions during a bitterly fought constitutional process with political risk for all.
  • Senators didn't make dinner plans this week, and expect to be in the chamber until the early morning hours on several days, Axios' Alayna Treene reports.

With Chief Justice John Roberts presiding, the cellphone ban on the Senate floor, increasingly overlooked in recent years, is expected to be enforced.

  • Each day will begin with the archaic proclamation: "All persons are commanded to keep silence, on pain of imprisonment."

Today is all about procedural fights: Democrats will try to force the Senate to allow new witnesses and documents.

  • Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer called McConnell's roadmap "deeply unfair": "Any senator that votes for the McConnell resolution will be voting to hide information and evidence from the American people."

Here's McConnell's plan:

  • The Senate will vote today on rules for the trial.
  • Opening arguments start tomorrow. House Democratic managers and Trump's defense team will each be given up to 24 hours over two days.
  • Senators will then have 16 hours to submit their questions to Roberts.
  • After the Q&A period, the Senate will vote on whether to consider and debate witness subpoenas.
  • If the Senate votes yes, each side can move to subpoena witnesses.
  • Ultimately, the Senate will vote on whether to convict the president and remove him from office.

What we learned in the halls: Last week's Government Accountability Office report accusing Trump of violating the law by holding up funds to Ukraine is "a big part" of Democrats' case, a leadership aide told Treene and Axios' Jonathan Swan.

  • The key argument Trump's legal team plans to make is that the articles of impeachment are deficient on their face because they don’t allege that Trump broke the law.
  • But Democrats plan to highlight the report from the nonpartisan congressional watchdog, which said the administration violated federal law.

📱Catch up quick: All day, Axios.com will be topped by a constantly updated "smart screen" narrating what's happening and why, and capturing the most insightful reaction.

  • Go deeper: Read McConnell's 4-page organizing resolution.

2. Digital-media breakthrough: Profit

Digital publishing is doing something it hasn't done en masse since the dawn of the internet: Make money.

  • Why it matters: Business Insider, Vox Media, The Information, Axios and Politico all turned profits in 2019 — in several cases, for the first time ever, sources tell Axios media-trends expert Sara Fischer.
  • Others — The Athletic, BuzzFeed and Vice — say they expect to this year.

Among the trends working in digital media’s favor:

  1. A global wave of new copyright laws means that platforms are likely to have to start paying publishers for the right to carry their content, even if it's just a linked headline or bit of text.
  2. Some tech companies are getting ahead of it. Facebook is paying select publishers millions of dollars annually to distribute their content. Key platforms — Apple, Twitter and Snapchat — are giving publishers a cut of the ad revenue they make or sell off their content.
  3. Increased demand for creators and creativity to produce podcasts and TV shows for the new streaming platforms.

🔗 Sign up for Sara Fischer's weekly newsletter, Axios Media Trends, out later today.

3. Scoop: GOP's new climate-change push

Trees, plastics and favorable tax policy are part of a new House Republican push on climate change — an effort to tell voters they care about the problem after a decade of dismissing it, Axios' Amy Harder scoops in her "Harder Line" column.

  • Why it matters: The policies reveal how Republicans hope to counter Democrats’ Green New Deal and show the political saliency of this topic that in the past has been on the electoral back burner.
  • This sea change in prioritization is partly cosmetic: Republicans are doubling down on a small-government agenda, and eschewing carbon pricing.

The plan, coordinated by House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, will likely include three specific targets:

  1. Capturing carbon dioxide emissions, with a focus on trees.
  2. Clean-energy innovation and funding.
  3. Conservation, focusing on plastic.

Go deeper.

"A much-anticipated gun-rights rally ... attracted an estimated 22,000 people to the heart of Virginia’s capital for a passionate yet nonviolent protest of gun control legislation," the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.

  • "Only one person was arrested, a 21-year-old from Richmond who was charged with wearing a mask in public."

6. Rudy ditches Parnas: "He lied multiple times"

Illustration: Andy Friedman for The New York Times

Rudy Giuliani went on Laura Ingraham's prime-time Fox News show last night and tried to distance himself from close associate Lev Parnas, who has gone on camera to say President Trump authorized shenanigans in Ukraine:

  • "Lev is someone I'm — I was close to. Obviously, I was misled by him. I feel very bad. I was godfather to his child and spent a lot of time ... I still feel sorry for him."
  • "I'm not going to respond to him for each and every one of the misrepresentations he's made, because there are so many. If I’m called as a witness, I’m prepared to do it."
  • "I will not be sucked into a point-by-point response — which I am ready to give in great detail in front of Congress or a court, in which it will turn out that he lied multiple times."

8. Davos dispatch: Huawei defiant on U.S. "attacks"

Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei. Screenshot: Axios

Huawei chief Ren Zhengfei said in Davos, Switzerland, that his company is prepared for any further U.S. "attacks," but he believes the world can avoid splitting into two separate technology systems, Axios' Ina Fried reports from the World Economic Forum.

  • Why it matters: The U.S. and China are locked in a fierce battle, with trade restrictions limiting Huawei's ability to sell phones around the world.

Israeli philosopher Yuval Noah Harari, who joined the Huawei chief on stage, talked about the existential threat posed when any tech company, be it Huawei or Facebook, can know human desires better than people themselves.

  • Zhengfei replied: "We are not sure if that can become reality. We do not rule out this possibility."

9. Plutocrats warm to Trump

With President Trump in Davos today as his impeachment trail convenes, the N.Y. Times' Andrew Ross Sorkin writes (subscription):

With the stock market at record highs, two trade deals announced and the possibility that Mr. Trump may be in office for another four years, there is an increasing sense that he will be accepted ...

As anathema as it may be to some participants, Mr. Trump may be the new Davos Man.

10. 1 phone thing

After restricting phone use, schools are coping with with acute "device separation anxiety," the Wall Street Journal's Sarah Krouse writes in an A-hed (subscription).

  • Some solutions include "lockable pouches that let students hold their phones," classroom charging stations that keep phones in view — and good, old-fashioned promises of extra credit.

THE HILL

© Getty Images  Welcome to The Hill’s Morning Report. It’s Tuesday! Our newsletter gets you up to speed on the most important developments in politics and policy, plus trends to watch. Alexis Simendinger and Al Weaver are the daily co-creators, so find us @asimendinger and @alweaver22 on Twitter and recommend the Morning Report to your friends. CLICK HERE to subscribe! President Trump through his legal advocates will present a sweeping defense against removal from office this week, arguing he did not abuse the powers of his office, and even if some senators believe he did, abuse of power is not impeachable under the Constitution. But before the president’s legal team can make that case, senators are clashing over how Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and his GOP colleagues want the trial to proceed, according to a resolution circulated on Monday evening for a Senate vote today (The Hill). McConnell’s procedures describe a round-the-clock timetable for the proceedings, beginning with opening arguments on Jan. 22. The Senate will not weigh whether to call witnesses or seek documents until after the House impeachment managers and the president’s team present their respective cases and senators then pose questions. CNN: Details of McConnell’s resolution, explained.  Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) objected to McConnell’s rules, arguing they depart from those used during the 1999 impeachment trial of former President Clinton and are designed to hide facts from the American people.  “McConnell is saying he doesn’t want to hear any of the existing evidence, and he doesn’t want to hear any new evidence,” Schumer said in a statement. “A trial where [there’s] no evidence — no existing record, no witnesses, no documents — isn’t a trial at all. It’s a cover up, and the American people will see it for exactly what it is.” The Hill: Senate braces for bitter fight over impeachment rules. Over the weekend, Trump’s legal team outlined its most detailed defense yet about a controversy the president triggered six months ago. As the third Senate impeachment trial in U.S. history gets underway this afternoon, Trump is 4,200 miles from Washington attending an international economic gathering in Switzerland.  The articles of impeachment brought against the president by the House — abuse of power and obstruction of Congress tied to Trump’s transactions with Ukraine and focus on former Vice President Joe Biden, a political rival — do not amount to “other high crimes and misdemeanors” as described by the founders, Trump’s lawyers argue. “Trump categorically and unequivocally denies each and every allegation in both Articles of Impeachment,” they said in documents filed with the Senate. The president’s lawyers also rebutted on Monday accusations by House impeachment managers that the president abused “his official powers to pressure a foreign government to interfere in a United States election for his personal political gain, and then attempted to cover up his scheme by obstructing Congress’s investigation into his misconduct.” The Hill: Democrats push back on White House claims, saying Trump believes he is above the law. The Hill: Trump’s legal team urges swift Senate acquittal. The president’s arguments hinge on interpretations of the Constitution and his executive powers, as well as his charge that Democrats engineered a “charade” to weaken his chances for reelection.  “House Democrats were determined from the outset to find some way — any way — to corrupt the extraordinary power of impeachment for use as a political tool to overturn the result of the 2016 election and to interfere in the 2020 election,” Trump’s lawyers wrote. “All of that is a dangerous perversion of the Constitution that the Senate should swiftly and roundly condemn.” The New York Times: Democrats seek more testimony and evidence for trial. The president, who has vacillated for months about the kind of trial he wanted to see, on Monday tweeted his preference for speed and no trial witnesses. He mentioned his former national security adviser, who at one point told lawmakers he would testify if subpoenaed by the Senate “They didn’t want John Bolton and others in the House. They were in too much of a rush. Now they want them all in the Senate. Not supposed to be that way!” Trump wrote. The Associated Press: Trump’s lawyers call impeachment case “flimsy.” TEXT of documents filed with the Senate related to the Trump impeachment trial. TEXT of memorandum by Trump’s defense team. Paul Kane: House Democrats’ balancing act: Argue case against Trump is solid while seeking more evidence. The New York Times: 100 senators who love to talk, sitting in silence.  The Hill: Chief Justice John Roberts remains under pressure from both sides as he presides during the trial.  Reuters: Trump’s defense team plans a war room, TV talking points and social media commentary. GOP House members named by the president on Monday night to offer advice during the trial include: Reps. Doug Collins (Ga.), Mike Johnson (La.), Jim Jordan (Ohio), Debbie Lesko (Ariz.), Mark Meadows (N.C.), John Ratcliffe (Texas), Elise Stefanik (N.Y.) and Lee Zeldin (N.Y.).  The Washington Post: McConnell-Trump bond to be tested by impeachment trial. © Getty Images  LEADING THE DAYCAMPAIGNS & POLITICS: The final countdown is on for the 2020 Democratic field as they ready for the final sprint to the Iowa caucuses in less than two weeks while three of the top contenders in the state are set to spend most of that time in Washington during the impeachment trial. While the top tier of the field remains closely packed together, former Vice President Joe Biden has emerged slightly in polls over the past week. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, Biden leads Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) by nearly 4 points, taking 21 percent support to lead the field. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and former South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg sit narrowly behind Sanders, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) continues to make a push to hit double digits and join the top tier in the Hawkeye State. Biden is the only candidate who doesn’t necessarily need to win Iowa to ensure their standing in the primary field. He continues to dominate the field in South Carolina, which has turned into a failsafe that no other campaign can count on looking ahead, according to The Hill’s Max GreenwoodThe Washington Post: With two weeks until Iowa, the Democratic presidential candidates are getting aggressive — with each other. The Hill: Biden leads Democratic primary field in Iowa: poll. Despite Biden’s standing in the polls, the race in Iowa remains extremely fluid, but instead of having the focus on the state in the next two weeks, much of the attention within 2020 circles will be on Washington for the impeachment trial as Sanders, Warren and Klobuchar will be tied up there for the vast majority of the coming weeks.  As Scott Wong writes, the ongoing battle for the progressive mantle between Sanders and Warren is also taking place on Capitol Hill as the two are pushing to win support from key lawmakers to boost their campaigns in the run-up to Iowa and other early voting states. Though many downplay the significance of endorsements on the voting electorate, they can have an effect elsewhere, namely with fundraising and showing that a campaign is gaining momentum.  “It's crunch time,” said one undecided progressive freshman Democrat, who was heavily lobbied by both campaigns last week. “I've heard more about endorsing presidential candidates in the last three days than I've heard in the last three months.”   Sanders reeled in a big fish in the progressive ranks over the weekend as Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), the co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, threw her support behind him and appeared on the stump in Iowa for him on Monday. She appears to be leaning toward supporting Sanders, having done so as a state lawmaker in 2016.  Niall Stanage: The Memo: Sanders-Warren battle could reshape Democratic primary. The Washington Post: Amy Klobuchar desperately wants an Iowa moment. Impeachment is getting in the way. The Hill: Democrats plot new approach to win over rural voters. On Monday, most of the Democratic field pulled double duty, appearing in Columbia, S.C., for the King Day at the Dome event in the morning before jetting off to Iowa for the Brown and Black presidential forum in the afternoon.  While Sanders, Warren and Klobuchar will be confined to Washington for the next week, Biden and Buttigieg are slated to barnstorm Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday before appearing in New Hampshire and South Carolina, respectively, later in the week. The three senators are being forced to rely on having surrogates appear on their behalf in the early vote states, as The Associated Press’s Alexandra Jaffe points out. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will campaign for Sanders later this week in Iowa, while “Queer Eye” host Jonathan Van Ness, former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) will be out and about to support Warren. Sanders tentatively is scheduled to hold a rally in Iowa late Wednesday night, but that appearance could be in question after McConnell announced that opening arguments will run for 24 hours over the first two days (The Hill). CBS News: Sanders apologizes to Biden for surrogate's op-ed alleging he has a “big corruption problem.” The New York Times: Democrats can qualify for the next debate by winning a single delegate in Iowa. The Associated Press: 2020 Democratic contenders link arms in MLK Jr. Day march. The AtlanticJohn Delaney is still running. Why? © Getty Images  IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKESCONGRESS: Fresh off dealing with impeachment, the House is looking to revive its legislative agenda as the Senate takes up the impeachment mantle for the next couple of weeks.  While the upper chamber deals with the impeachment issue, the House is moving on and is expected to tackle issues such as war powers and aid for Puerto Rico in the coming weeks and months. Notably, the House is out on recess for the week, with the exception of the seven House Democrats serving as managers for the trial.  As Cristina Marcos previews, among the first actions the House will take next week are votes on a pair of war powers resolutions that progressives sought.  The first measure, authored by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), would repeal the 2002 authorization of military force for the Iraq war that has been used as legal justification for action against Iran. A second bill by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) would prohibit the use of funds for military action in or against Iran without approval from Congress.   The votes will come weeks after the House passed a resolution that would direct the president to end military hostilities with Iran unless there is an imminent attack or one is authorized by Congress. “Finally Congress will have an opportunity to reassert our voice on military action,” Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Jayapal said in a statement. Also on the agenda is a $3.4 billion emergency supplemental spending bill for Puerto Rico to deal with the aftermath of the earthquakes that ravaged the island. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) confirmed that the House will also hold a vote on the legislation following recess.  Included in the legislation is $100 million for educational assistance, $1.3 billion for road repairs and $2 billion for Community Development Block Grant funds for restoring infrastructure and housing.  Among the other items the House is expected to deal with in the near future are surprise medical billing, infrastructure reform and legislation to strengthen labor unions. Roll Call: Impeachment isn’t the only obstacle to legislative wins for Congress in 2020. *** WHITE HOUSE & ADMINISTRATION: The president spoke this morning in Davos, Switzerland, at a World Economic Forum, a global gathering focused this year on climate change and attended by some of Trump’s best-known international detractors (Newsweek). Trump ticked off growth and employment statistics since his election, boasting “the United States is in the midst of an economic boom the likes of which the world has never seen before.”   Senior administration officials, who debated the president’s participation abroad while an impeachment trial dominates headlines at home, said Trump will meet separately in Switzerland with leaders from Iraq, Pakistan, the European Commission and Kurdistan. © Getty Images  > National Security Council: Trump appears to have lost his third White House Russia expert in the last year (Bloomberg News). The president is scrambling to promote what he sees as a record of defending protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, even as he sought to repeal and replace ObamaCare (The Hill). > Trump Inc.: The president’s personal financial and business interests remain welded to his presidency, according to detailed examples reported by Politico: “As Trump kicks off his fourth year as president this week facing the stain of an impeachment trial, he has managed to skirt accountability for widespread possible conflicts of interest that critics say represent a blatant abuse of power and create dangerous risks to the integrity of the presidency. The intersections between Trump Inc. and President Trump are everywhere: A Chinese state-owned company was awarded a multimillion [dollar] contract to help develop a Trump golf course in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, amid a U.S.-China trade war. T-Mobile executives stayed at Trump's Washington hotel while seeking a green light from the federal government for a merger. The discovery solved the mystery of what became of the missing masterpiece, but not who spirited it away. The Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery in Piacenza acquired the work in 1925 and reported it missing in February 1997. © Twitter  The Morning Report is created by journalists Alexis Simendinger and Al Weaver. Pigs, goats, ducks, cats, dogs and more were housed in small sheds and barns at the site in Thawville, Illinois. Now the sanctuary has been abandoned and the woman who ran it was indicted on an animal cruelty charge after two board members say they found the remains of at least 200 animals there.2Joliet officer faces drunk driving charge after Berwyn officer who was her passenger dies in I-55 crashTUESDAY, JAN 21A Joliet police officer faces drunken driving charges after a Berwyn police officer who was a passenger in her car died in a crash Sunday morning on Interstate 55 in Plainfield Township, officials said.Charles “Chuck” Schauer, 33, who died as a result of the crash around 6 a.m., had been a 10-year veteran of the Berwyn Police Department, according to a statement from the agency. Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero announced Schauer’s death in a post on social media, referring to his death as a “tragic traffic accident.”  3As trial nears, Trump lawyers call impeachment case 'flimsy’ in 110-page brief that offers the most detailed glimpse at defense they intend to useTUESDAY, JAN 21President Donald Trump’s legal team asserted that he did “absolutely nothing wrong," calling the impeachment case against him “flimsy" and a “dangerous perversion of the Constitution." The lawyers decried the impeachment process as rigged and insisted that abuse of power was not a crime. It was impossible to watch the opening of Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate without feeling a sense of patriotism, writes Tribune’s Dahleen Glanton.4Some police departments have ‘more questions than answers’ about marijuana enforcementTUESDAY, JAN 21Just a few weeks into legal recreational marijuana in Illinois, some south suburban police departments are facing challenges of not just training officers but also educating the public about what is, and isn’t, allowed. Chiefs with local departments say the education is ongoing, with gray areas and unanswered questions making it difficult on how to proceed. There is a presumption by the public "that it is a legal free-for-all,” said Christopher Mannino, Park Forest’s police chief. “A lot of people don’t understand all the restrictions.”  5Jean Banchet Awards give top honors to Anna and David Posey, Smyth restaurant, Oriole groupTUESDAY, JAN 21The annual Jean Banchet Awards, held at Venue Six10, heaped praise on more than a dozen chefs, restaurants and beverage professionals. It was a good night for husband-wife teams, writes Tribune critic Phil Vettel.6Oakbrook Terrace mayor resigns amid federal corruption investigation tied to red-light camerasTUESDAY, JAN 21Oakbrook Terrace Mayor Tony Ragucci has resigned his office amid an ongoing federal corruption probe, according to a news release from his suburb. The severance deal that Buckingham Palace announced for Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, is most remarkable for how clean a break the royal family is making with two of its most popular, if disaffected, members — much more severe than the couple apparently expected. The British news media, which has likened the couple’s split with the royal family to Brexit, lost no time in pronouncing the agreement the equivalent of a “hard Brexit.”8Mini golf concept Puttshack coming to Oakbrook Center, opening River North HQTUESDAY, JAN 21High-tech mini golf concept Puttshack is coming to Oakbrook Center later this year, kicking off the company’s plans for a major U.S. rollout led from a new Chicago headquarters. IS IT ASSAULT TO CALL A JOURNALIST A “LIBERAL HACK”?
Let’s spend altogether too much time talking about that network which would love to have the Hallmark Channel’s ratings, CNN. CNN is a network that does much better on social media than it does in real-life ratings, where it struggles every day to have that thing where there is a number and a period before the other three numbers for the people watching any of their primetime shows. http://vlt.tc/3v0w They do have a presence on Capitol Hill, where one of their reporters, Manu Raju, shouted a question the other day to passing Arizona Senator Martha McSally, who responded by calling him a “liberal hack”, and saying she had no interest in talking to him. http://vlt.tc/3uzn

NBC

From NBC's Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann. FIRST READ: Dems could be making life miserable for vulnerable Republicans on impeachment. Why aren’t they?It sure looks like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is going to ram through an incredibly speedy impeachment trial, which COULD result in President Trump’s acquittal by as early as next week. The ground rules for the trial that McConnell issued last night: Each side gets 24 hours to make their case, but has to do so within two days (so get ready for some long 12-hour days). What’s more, his proposal also suggests that none of the evidence the House collected will be admitted automatically into the record (the Senate will have to vote to admit any documents). If McConnell gets his way – Senate Democrats will try to offer amendments to modify the ground rules – Dems might have only themselves to blame.REUTERS/Yuri GripasAs it turns out, they’ve put little to no pressure so far on vulnerable GOP senators like Cory Gardner, R-Colo., Martha McSally, R-Ariz., Susan Collins, R-Maine, and even Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. Indeed, according to our ad trackers at Advertising Analytics, there are 11 impeachment-themed TV ads airing across the country right now, and all 11 are by Republicans and GOP groups. Not a single one is by Democrats putting pressure on Republicans. If the shoe were on the other foot – say a President Hillary Clinton facing a Senate impeachment trial – we’re fairly certain we’d see GOP ads directed at Doug Jones in Alabama, Gary Peters in Michigan and (probably) Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona. So why haven’t Democrats tried to pressure GOP senators? Especially in the month since the House passed their impeachment articles against Trump? Democrats might have the overall facts on their side. And they have a slight majority of Americans supporting Trump’s conviction and removal, according to yesterday’s CNN poll. But they’ve yet to make life miserable for the Cory Gardners, Martha McSallys and Susan Collinses. And that makes it much easier for Mitch McConnell to win on process.Impeachment trial updateHere’s what’s on tap inside the U.S. Senate for today’s impeachment trial, per NBC’s Kasie Hunt and the NBC Capitol Hill team: At 12:30 pm ET, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell speaks on the Senate floor before the trial starts; Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is expected to follow. At 1:00 pm ET, the impeachment trial convenes, with Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts presiding. The Senate holds up to two hours of debate on the organizing resolution – followed by two hours of debate on Schumer’s rebuttal amendment. And that’s potentially followed by two hours of debate for every following amendment.DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is... 51 percent 51 percent.  That’s the share of Americans who think that President Trump has personally encouraged foreign interference in American elections, according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll. The survey also found that 41 percent of Americans say that the U.S. is not very prepared or not prepared at all to keep November’s election safe and secure. And a majority — 56 percent — say Trump has not done very much or has done nothing at all to prevent future election interference.   2020 VISION: Sanders apologizes, but his movement keeps up the fighthttps://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2020-election/sanders-apologizes-biden-supporter-s-attack-n1119036On Monday – the day before Senate impeachment trial into President Trump was to begin in earnest – the Sanders campaign and a prominent supporter alleged that Joe Biden was corrupt. The Sanders campaign newsletter by combative speechwriter David Sirota flagged this op-ed by Zephyr Teachout, who has endorsed Sanders: “‘Middle Class’ Joe Biden has a corruption problem – it makes him a weak candidate.” And after a Sanders campaign spokeswoman was unable to defend the allegation to MSNBC’s Katy Tur, the candidate himself apologizedper NBC’s Shaquille Brewster and Gary Grumbach. “It is absolutely not my view that Joe is corrupt in any way. And I'm sorry that that op-ed appeared," Sanders said in an interview with CBS while in Iowa. Biden quickly accepted Sanders' apology in a tweet, writing: "Thanks for acknowledging this, Bernie. These kinds of attacks have no place in this primary. Let’s all keep our focus on making Donald Trump a one-term president." But the story doesn’t end there. Last night on Twitter, guess what hashtag was trending -- #BidenIsCorrupt. It’s a reminder that, like what we saw in 2016 (especially at the Dem convention after the WikiLeaks’s DNC disclosures), Sanders is often unable to control the movement he created. Even when he apologizes – and it’s not every day he does that – many of his supporters continue the attack. On the campaign trail today:  The activity for the non-senators is mostly in Iowa: Joe Biden has community events in Ames and Fort Dodge… Pete Buttigieg holds town halls with Rep. Dave Loebsack in Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Muscatine and Cedar Rapids… Tom Steyer is in Council Bluffs and Atlantic… Andrew Yang has town halls in Forest City and Waverly… And John Delaney hits Fort Dodge… Outside of the Hawkeye State, Tulsi Gabbard stumps in New Hampshire.
Dispatches from NBC’s campaign embeds: On the eve of the impeachment trial, NBC’s Maura Barrett reports on Bernie Sanders trying to close the deal in Iowa, before heading back to DC: “’As all of you know, tonight I'm going back to DC, and tomorrow I will be in an impeachment trial. How long it lasts? Honestly don't know. So, I will not be able to be back here in Iowa as much as I would like,’ Sanders said. He continued, ‘So ironically, the us, not me, is becoming very much a reality in the last two weeks of this campaign. Because I am not going to be able to be here as much as I would like. So you guys are going to have to carry the ball.’ Sanders also picked up a notable endorsement in Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., who used language in her endorsement eerily similar to that of Elizabeth Warren’s campaign. ‘We need bold structural change because if we don't do that this suffering is going to continue,’ and another point in her portion, the phrase ‘deep structural change’ was used. (To spell it out: Warren’s catch phrase is ‘big structural change.’”TWEET OF THE DAY: Hillary vs. Bernie (continued)ICYMI: News clips you shouldn't miss Here are the initial rules of the road for the impeachment trial, according to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Trump’s lawyers and his allies in the Senate are working to keep John Bolton from testifying publicly in the impeachment trial. Kellyanne Conway suggested that Martin Luther King Jr. would have opposed Trump’s impeachment. Here’s our team-on-the-ground’s dispatch from the Richmond gun rights rally yesterday. The New York Times gives a glimpse of what campaign life is like for organizers in Iowa. Thanks for reading.

01/21/2020Share:      Carl Cannon's Morning NoteImpeachment; Climate Bill; Arthur and Patsy

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2020. The impeachment trial of the president swings into gear today. If you count Richard Nixon, who essentially copped a guilty plea by resigning, it’s the fourth such episode in U.S. history. The other three were Andrew Johnson, who barely escaped conviction when a couple of brave Republicans bucked their party’s leadership; Bill Clinton, who stayed in office on a virtual straight party-line vote; and now Donald J. Trump, who faces a jury of senators whose views on these proceedings are predictably based on a single factor: whether they have a “D” or an “R” after their names. In other words, American politics has long had a heavy partisan quotient. Too heavy, in my view. But outside of domestic politics, events are not always so predictable. This is especially true in the performing arts, as Americans learned on this date in 1957, when a 24-year-old country singer from Winchester, Va., appeared on a CBS variety show hosted by Arthur Godfrey. Her name was Patsy Cline, and she performed a new number called “Walkin’ After Midnight.” The audience loved the song and the vocalist, and a star was launched.
I’ll have an additional word on Patsy Cline in a moment. RealClearMarkets editor John Tamny responds to concerns about short-term borrowing.*  *  *Before “America’s Got Talent,” there was “Britain’s Got Talent,” and before them both there was “American Idol,” which debuted on the Fox Broadcasting Company in 2002. That show, too, was derivative -- it was copying “Pop Idol,” the British version. But this idea that there is untapped talent out there just waiting to be showcased on television is as old as the medium itself. Its trailblazing impresario was a man named Arthur Godfrey, whose staff scoured the country for undiscovered musical prodigies, comedians, and other performers.A New York native, Godfrey mastered radio broadcasting in the U.S. Navy, and he himself won a talent show in Baltimore that launched his career. On Dec. 6, 1948, CBS debuted his new concept in a show titled “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts.”The winners were chosen by audience applause, registered by a meter. But win or lose, it was great exposure for the artists. The list of contestants over the decade of the show’s existence included Pat Boone, Tony Bennett, Lenny Bruce, Roy Clark, Rosemary Clooney, Wally Cox, Jonathan Winters, Vic Damone, Leslie Uggams, the McGuire Sisters, and Marilyn Horne. The show was waning in popularity by January 21, 1957, when Patsy Cline strode out and stood by the piano to sing. She had a fledgling career by then -- she’d previously been on television a couple of times -- and usually performed in a cowgirl hat and her mother’s homemade dresses. Godfrey’s producers wanted her in a cocktail dress, however, and she complied with this request. It helped: “Walkin’ After Midnight” became a cross-over hit.Cline became a cross-over star as well, although her recording career was cut short by two car crashes and the plane crash that took her life six years after she demonstrated that Godfrey’s talent scouts were mining fertile territory out there. In those six years, Cline nurtured many other musicians, especially women country singers. Operating under her theory that “there is room for everybody,” she gave a helping hand to Loretta Lynn, Dottie West, Brenda Lee, Barbara Mandrell, and others. The list of contemporary female stars whose careers she inspired -- from Reba McIntyre to LeAnn Rimes -- has never stopped growing.Which is not to say that Patsy didn’t milk her own stardom. She headlined at the Grand Ole Opry, insisted on being introduced at her concerts as “The One and Only Patsy Cline,” enjoyed beers and storytelling with the boys at Tootsie’s lounge in Nashville, referred to herself as “The Cline,” and referred to friends and acquaintances -- male and female -- as “hoss.”And sometimes she showed a better eye for talent than Arthur Godfrey’s talent scouts: Among those they didn’t choose were Buddy Holly and the Four Freshmen. They also passed on a soulful singer from Tupelo, Miss., by way of Memphis -- a handsome fellow named Elvis Presley. Patsy Cline didn’t overlook him, though. She used his backup group in her recording sessions and had a special name for Elvis. She called him “Big Hoss.” Carl M. Cannon Washington Bureau chief, RealClearPolitics

ARRA News Service (in this message: 14 new items)

Another One Bites the DustPosted: 20 Jan 2020 07:39 PM PSTby NRA-ILA: Actually, that headline is a little misleading, as we are referring to U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) abandoning his bid to take on Donald Trump in the 2020 Presidential Election.

But when we last reported on the Democrat clown-car that is the field of candidates who wished to challenge Trump for POTUS, there were 19 active campaigns.

With the departure of Booker, Democrats now have “only” a dozen candidates from which to choose.

In fact, our last posting on the field proved to be quite prescient. We suggested that promoting the extreme anti-gun position of confiscating firearms from American citizens may be the new “exit strategy” for foundering campaigns poised to leave the race. At the time, we opined that U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) seemed to be positioning herself to drop out of the race by reiterating her support for banning and confiscating semi-automatic firearms. She threw in the towel the following week.

Booker, like Harris, promoted the euphemistically named “mandatory buyback” policy, which is a more innocent sounding name for confiscation. Now that he has announced he is quitting, every Democrat candidate who had been vying to be President and has also openly advocated for confiscating firearms from American citizens has now deserted the race. Before Booker and Harris, we saw the campaigns of failed candidates Eric Swalwell and Robert Francis O’Rourke give up the ghost.

Of course, those candidates that remain are all still stridently anti-gun.

They all want to ban the future manufacture and sale of semi-automatic firearms like the AR-15.

They all want to set arbitrary limits on how many rounds of ammunition a magazine can hold.

They all want to prohibit the private transfer of firearms between law-abiding citizens by imposing so-called “universal” background checks.

Virtually every proposal that has been introduced by anti-gun extremists over the last few decades has been met with support by most, if not all, of the candidates that are still in the race.

Sadly, two candidates that appear likely to stick around for a while have taken arguably equally extreme positions on another gun issue, using firearms to save lives.

The first, former Vice President Joe Biden, has a modest lead in most polls, but a commanding lead in gaffes. In 2017, after Stephen Willeford used an AR-15 to bring an end to the rampage of a crazed murderer at a Texas church, Biden ignored the idea that lives were likely saved by the heroic act. Instead, when asked about the use of an AR-15 by Willeford, he stated, “Well, first all, the kind of gun being carried, he shouldn’t be carrying.”

Last December, after another Texas church attack was also stopped by an armed citizen, it was pointed out by many that Biden had criticized the very law that allowed law-abiding gun owners to carry firearms for self-defense into houses of worship.

After Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the NRA-supported law in September, Biden said, “It’s just absolutely irrational. It’s totally irrational.”

Granted, Biden cannot see into the future, so he had no idea that his words would come back to make him look so foolish, so quickly. Then again, some might argue that he has a long track record of past statements causing future problems.

The other Democrat candidate who has staked out a position against firearms being used by law-abiding citizens to save lives cannot use the excuse of not being able to foretell future events, as his comments were made after the fact.

Anti-gun billionaire Mike Bloomberg spoke out against not just the Texas law, but, presumably, against any use of a firearm by any citizen to defend themselves or others.

Although most acknowledge that Jack Wilson—the 71-year-old church congregant who brought an end to the violent attack at West Freeway Church of Christ—acted heroically, Bloomberg didn’t see things that way.

At a campaign stop in Alabama, Bloomberg commented on Wilson’s action, stating, “[I]t’s the job of law enforcement to, uh, have guns and to decide when to shoot. You just do not want the average citizen carrying a gun in a crowded place.”

So, now that all of the Democrat candidates who openly advocated for gun confiscation have been shown the door, it appears that Biden and Bloomberg hold the most extreme anti-gun position—opposing law-abiding citizens using firearms to stop violent assaults and save lives.

Biden will be in the race for the foreseeable future due to his lead in the polls. Bloomberg, on the other hand, is polling in the single digits. But with a personal fortune that could underwrite several Presidential campaigns, and a driving desire to impose his anti-gun ideology on America, expect Bloomberg to remain in the race for at least several months.

Unless, of course, the curse-of-the-most-extreme-anti-gun-positions strikes again.

We can certainly hope.

Christmas Gift From The Trump Administration: A 5G Wireless ‘Czar’Posted: 20 Jan 2020 07:18 PM PSTThe Bell Has Already Rungby Seton Motley, Contributing Author: In 2019, with a $4-trillion-per-year federal Leviathan, running a joint called Less Government can lead to our taking some seemingly confusing and contradictory policy positions.

Of course, we want LESS government – not NO government. We’d like somewhere between $4-trillion-per-year – and Somalia. Admittedly closer to Somalia, but still….

We want a Constitutionally prescribed and proscribed government. Which means there are, in fact, some things the federal government should be doing.

And sometimes – especially with a government as huge as our federal government is – you need a little more government here…to get a whole lot less government there.

To wit: The federal government is responsible for maintaining the territorial integrity of our nation. And a little more government at our borders – results in a whole lot less government inside our borders.

The federal government is responsible for anything that involves the rest of the planet. They pass and enforce the relevant laws for our country – and then negotiate terms of exchange and interchange with the other countries of the world.

To wit: The Internet. In all its delivery forms: telephonic, wired, satellite…and wireless:

“95.1 percent of internet users primarily utilize mobile devices to access the internet.”

Going forward, no format has greater security and economic implications – than wireless.

We and the rest of the planet are racing toward the Fifth Generation (5G) wireless network. But the only two actual competitors for first place are US…and Communist China. So it is vitally important we win.

And that means getting the many arms of our federal government coordinated and rowing in the same direction. A Herculean task in any situation. Even more so on something as tech-heavy as 5G.

Ok, let’s be realistic: Here’s hoping we can get the government to be as non-government-like as possible.

To do that – you need a person to oversee the very many moving government parts that have a hand in 5G. So on December 23rd….

Trump Names Robert Blair to Work on 5G Efforts and International Telecommunications Policy

Meet Trump’s New 5G Czar:

“‘He will coordinate interagency efforts and serve as a liaison to industry, non-governmental, and international stakeholders to promote the development, deployment, and operation of the next-generation telecommunications infrastructure that will provide the security, data privacy, and stability required for a fully interconnected world,’ the White House said….

“(I)t appears that Blair’s background in defense spending is the primary reason for his new position.”

Indeed – for the massive security implications. Again, it’s either US or Communist China getting first to 5G.

Does our winning matter? Is the current Pope Communist – oops, I mean Catholic?
Why the US Must Beat China in the Race to 5G Internet:

“‘Getting there faster is a goal in and of itself,” (Federal Communications Commission-FCC Commissioner Brendan) Carr says. “The economic benefits that come with being a first-mover – and some of the standards-setting roles – are why I think winning it is important.”

What is “standards-setting,” you ask?

Why China and the US Are Fighting Over 5G:

“Being the first to develop 5G is important. This is because whoever develops 5G first – or, more realistically, various components of the technology – will likely have their intellectual property rights (IPRs) engrained in the 3GPP’s and ITU’s international standards.

“Having essential IPRs as part of the international standard will convey a huge commercial advantage for companies because it will allow them to sell products that comply with the standard. It will also allow them to collect royalties from other companies who use the technology….

“In addition to economic benefits, influencing international 5G standards carries security advantages as well. This is because whoever develops the standardized technology is likely to have a deeper knowledge of how it works – including any access points or vulnerabilities.

“Because these technical standards will affect anything that connects to the 5G network, any vulnerabilities could exist across all smart devices and the (Internet of Things) IoT.

“This is why the US government is so nervous about losing control of 5G development.”

As well the US government should be.

Thank goodness we are.

Which is why Trump’s new 5G Czar was the Christmas gift – we didn’t know we needed.

But we absolutely do.

Trump Warns of Virginia Atack On 2nd Amendment Gun Rights RallyPosted: 20 Jan 2020 06:56 PM PSTby Tal Axelrod: President Trump on Friday warned of an “attack” on the Second Amendment after Virginia Democrats curtailed access for firearms at the state capitol.

“Your 2nd Amendment is under very serious attack in the Great Commonwealth of Virginia. That’s what happens when you vote for Democrats, they will take your guns away. Republicans will win Virginia in 2020. Thank you Dems!” Trump tweeted.

The tweet comes after state legislators voted last week to ban firearms at the state Capitol and Gov. Ralph Northam (D-Va.) declared a state of emergency to temporarily ban individuals from carrying weapons on its grounds.

Both moves came before a gun rights rally planned for next week that is expected to draw armed protesters and a mass of counter-protesters, raising fears of clashes between the two crowds.

Northam said in his statement declaring the emergency that his office had received credible intelligence of “threats of violence” surrounding the demonstration that included “extremist rhetoric” similar to that surrounding the deadly Unite the Right white supremacist rally in Charlottesville in 2017.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League, the organizers of the rally, has said that the demonstration will draw thousands to the area. The group's Facebook event page indicates that more than 5,000 say they will attend.

"We support citizens’ rights to peacefully protest and express their views to their elected officials," said Northam. "But we must also keep the public, as well as those who work around Capitol Square, safe."

Virginia Democrats, who won total control of state government last year for the first time since 1994, are also eyeing several gun control measures as they seek to flex their muscles in their newfound majority.

Among the reforms the party hopes to pass are universal background checks, a ban on assault weapons and a "red flag" law that would permit law enforcement to remove guns from those deemed to pose a danger to themselves or others.

Virginia 2A: Black Guy Waving Trump Flag, 'I Am Governor Ralph Northam and I Am in Blackface Today'Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:32 PM PSTStephen Greenby Stephen Green: Julio Rosas from our Townhall mothership is at the Virginia Second Amendment rally today, and just posted what might be the best civil rights video of the 21st century.
The streets around Virginia's state capitol are packed for the Second Amendment rally. pic.twitter.com/madOmwcCJy— Julio Rosas (@Julio_Rosas11) January 20, 2020An African-American man waving a Trump flag jokingly tells the crowd: I am Gov. Ralph Northam and I am in blackface today.#VirginaRally pic.twitter.com/z32mnR5Tzp— Julio Rosas (@Julio_Rosas11) January 20, 2020An unidentified black man -- who I suspect is about to become an internet video sensation -- announced to laughs from the crowd, "I am Governor Ralph Northam and I am in blackface today." Before that, you can hear him instructing the crowd to "Make a hole, I'm using my white privilege. Make a hole, step to the side!"

How do you describe this crowd? Far from threatening violence or anything like that, they're outdoors, dressed for the weather, laughing and having a good time. You certainly wouldn't call them unruly, but they certainly aren't too serious or dour given the importance of today's event. So if they aren't unruly... is "ruly" a word?

Let's agree that today, it is.

Some people with a partisan drum to beat on this day have complained that it's some kind of sacrilege or something to hold a Second Amendment rally on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s holiday.

Here's an important reminder from UCLA law prof Adam Winkler:Most people think King would be the last person to own a gun [who is this 'we,' kemosabe? -Steve]. Yet in the mid-1950s, as the civil rights movement heated up, King kept firearms for self-protection. In fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

A recipient of constant death threats, King had armed supporters take turns guarding his home and family. He had good reason to fear that the Klan in Alabama was targeting him for assassination.

William Worthy, a journalist who covered the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reported that once, during a visit to King’s parsonage, he went to sit down on an armchair in the living room and, to his surprise, almost sat on a loaded gun. Glenn Smiley, an adviser to King, described King’s home as “an arsenal.”The Bill of Rights isn't a buffet. All of our constitutionally recognized rights apply to all of us, regardless of race, creed, color, or whatever. That's an important thing to remember when a onetime blackface-wearing gun-grabber tries to take away the rights of people like the one in today's little Twitter video.

The Dems’ 11th Hour Impeachment PloyPosted: 20 Jan 2020 03:54 PM PST. . . Will "evidence" from indicted Parnas finally do the trick?
Lev Parnasby Joseph Klein: The House Democrats’ desperate 11th hour effort to beef up their incredibly weak impeachment case against President Trump is running ahead at full speed. They are hoping to supplement their House impeachment investigation record for use at the Senate impeachment trial beginning this week with documents that they have obtained from Lev Parnas. Mr. Parnas, an associate of President Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, has been indicted on charges of conspiring to violate the ban on foreign donations and contributions in connection with federal and state elections.

Parnas had turned over texts, e-mails, notes, photos, and other documents to the House Intelligence Committee, which the Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff claims are relevant to the impeachment. Schiff has transmitted the Parnas materials to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler. The Judiciary Committee would presumably include these materials, along with transcripts of Parnas’ cable TV interviews with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and CNN’s Anderson Cooper, as part of the record of the impeachment investigation for the House managers’ use at the Senate trial. Schiff is the leading House impeachment manager. Nadler is also one of the House managers. The House Democrats cited the Parnas materials in their “Trial Memorandum.”

Indicted Lev Parnas has emerged as the Democrats’ latest central figure in their ongoing melodrama. That is because of Parnas’ unsubstantiated claim that President Trump knew everything about the effort by Mr. Giuliani to pressure the Ukrainian government into investigating the Bidens. The Democrats are hoping that the documents Parnas turned over to the House Intelligence Committee support Parnas"s accusation. However, they do not. The only “evidence” of any direct contacts between Parnas himself and President Trump are a few random photos of the two men together. One of the photos merely shows a desk with nameplates next to each other reading President Donald J. Trump and Lev Parnas, behind which are two empty chairs. This photo could have been easily staged. Parnas has not submitted documentation – texts, e-mails, notes of phone calls, etc. - of any substantive communications directly between Parnas and the president, as far as we can tell from the materials that have been made public.

There is documentation of communications between Parnas and Rudy Giuliani pertaining to Ukraine. However, they add nothing to what we already know concerning Mr. Giuliani’s intense interest in obtaining more information about the Bidens’ activities in Ukraine during the Obama administration. And even assuming that Mr. Giuliani was acting with President Trump's direct knowledge and consent, so what? Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company which paid no-experience Hunter Biden lucrative compensation for serving on its board, has an undisputed history of corruption on a grand scale. Why shouldn't the activities in Ukraine of Hunter Biden, and of his father who was then serving as President Obama's point man in Ukraine and had demanded the firing of the Ukrainian prosecutor investigating Burisma, be considered a legitimate subject for investigation into alleged corruption?

House Democrats are also trying to ensnare House Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes’ aide, Derek Harvey, in some sort of nefarious plot based on texts showing Mr. Harvey’s frequent contacts with Lev Parnas relating to Ukraine. As Politico reports, the “text messages show Harvey asking Parnas to pursue several lines of inquiry with his Ukrainian contacts, including one regarding what Harvey calls ‘rumor’ about coordination between the 2016 campaign of Hillary Clinton and the Ukrainian government to dig up dirt on Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort.”

Amongst the material turned over by Parnas was a whatsapp message from Derek Harvey in which he asked Mr. Parnas for “materials” that might shed light on reports of the doubling of U.S. foreign aid to Ukraine from Fiscal Year 2015 to Fiscal Year 2016. Evidently reporting what his sources at the State Department had told him, Mr. Harvey wrote, “Their hunch was that the $ would get grafted by UKR officials, in exchange for $ then given to Clinton Foundation or other social justice causes.” Derek Harvey then asked Parnas to look at “TDY records to Kiev” (possibly a reference to temporary duty assignment records), “cables from DC to post, et al, audit donor aid to UKR.”

Whether these texts lend any credence to charges, in Politico’s words, of Rep. Nunes’ “potential involvement in the Giuliani-led effort to oust [former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine] Yovanovitch and push the Ukrainian government to announce an investigation targeting Biden,” they provide no proof whatsoever of the first impeachment article’s allegation that President Trump abused his presidential powers. Much of the materials chronicle logistical difficulties in setting up meetings and Skype calls. They show an interest in ferreting out possible corruption involving foreign aid to Ukraine and the Clinton Foundation, but there is barely any mention of the Bidens. In any case, the materials provide no direct evidence proving that President Trump required the Ukrainians to announce a Biden investigation as a precondition to receiving the temporarily withheld security aid. And the aid was ultimately released with no strings attached.

As to the temporary hold on the security aid, the House Democrats are also seizing on the published opinion last week by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that the hold violated the Impoundment Control Act. The Democrats cited the GAO legal opinion in their Trial Memorandum.

“Faithful execution of the law does not permit the President to substitute his own policy priorities for those that Congress has enacted into law,” the GAO opinion said. “OMB [Office of Management and Budget] withheld funds for a policy reason, which is not permitted under the Impoundment Control Act (ICA). The withholding was not a programmatic delay. Therefore, we conclude that OMB violated the ICA.”

The House Democrats’ use of the non-binding GAO opinion to support their impeachment case is laughable. They are elevating what is at most a non-binding finding of a technical violation, which delayed the release of the security aid to Ukraine for less than two months, into an impeachable offense. The aid was released before the end of the fiscal year on September 30, 2019.

The GAO is not a judicial body. Nor is it an impartial arbiter of a separation of powers dispute between the legislative and executive branches since it works for Congress. Moreover, as Breitbart pointed out, “if a mere GAO finding is sufficient to justify impeachment, then President Barack Obama ought to have been impeached at least seven times over for each of the following cases in which the GAO found that the Obama administration had violated federal law.” The Breitbart article then went on to list these unpunished instances.

The GAO opinion neglected to properly analyze the reasons for President Trump’s temporary hold order that the OMB implemented. The president of the United States, as the Supreme Court has written, is “the sole organ of the federal government in the field of international relations – a power which does not require as a basis for its exercise an act of Congress.” The president decided to temporarily delay the disbursement of aid to Ukraine, a country with a dark history of corruption, until he was satisfied that the current Ukrainian government is taking its anti-corruption pledges seriously. Not only is this within his constitutional powers to set foreign policy priorities. It is consistent with legislative authority granted to the president and the executive agencies under his direction to use foreign assistance programs to combat corruption and encourage good governance.

If Congress wanted to enforce the ICA in a timely manner, it could have invoked the remedy contained in the ICA itself. The ICA (2 USC Sec. 687) expressly grants the Comptroller General with the authority “to bring a civil action in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia to require such budget authority to be made available for obligation, and such court is hereby expressly empowered to enter in such civil action, against any department, agency, officer, or employee of the United States, any decree, judgment, or order which may be necessary or appropriate to make such budget authority available for obligation.” The House failed to ask the Comptroller General to enforce the ICA when it had a chance. Citing the GAO opinion in its Trial Memorandum to support the articles of impeachment demonstrates the House Democrats’ pitiful desperation.

As the White House said in a statement, the two articles of impeachment against President Trump represent a "dangerous attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their President. This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election—now just months away."

Sadly, the American people will have to endure more partisan nonsense from the Democrat House managers during the Senate impeachment trial. In the end, the Senate will hopefully do its duty and dispatch these clowns back to the circus tent they came from with a verdict acquitting President Trump of all charges contained in the reckless House impeachment articles.

Sorry Shannon, But Those “Random Civilians” Are What Are Known As NRA MembersPosted: 20 Jan 2020 03:07 PM PSTby NRA-ILA: We were well aware that after New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg spent a cool $2.5 million on his latest acquisition, majority control of the Virginia General Assembly, law-abiding gun owners in The Old Dominion would see an onslaught of legislation designed to infringe on their right to keep and bear arms. As the legislature prepared to convene, NRA-ILA scheduled a day for legislative action to show our opposition to the anti-gun agenda of Bloomberg and Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam, and we asked our members to show up at the capitol in Richmond.

Boy did they!

Thousands of NRA members and supporters of the Second Amendment came to Virginia’s capital, and NRA handed out t-shirts and 1,000 30-round magazines, kindly donated by Magpul Industries, as thanks to freedom’s most dedicated advocates.

Even the usually anti-gun Northam praised NRA’s “peaceful event,” although it would be nice if his respect for NRA members included not infringing our fundamental rights.

But Bloomberg’s most prominent anti-gun shill, Shannon Watts, seemed to be overcome by the thought of law-abiding gun owners and Second Amendment advocates gathering to present their unified political voice in opposition to legislative assaults on their cherished liberty. Watts, of course, heads the anti-gun advocacy group Moms Demand Action, a Bloomberg subsidiary that he acquired in 2013.

As you can probably guess, Watts had a problem with the magazines.

When she was told about what happened in Richmond, she tweeted her faux outrage over the idea that “NRA gave away dangerous high-capacity magazines…to random civilians at the Virginia statehouse today.”

Where to even begin with that mess?

First, Shannon, magazines are not dangerous. The particular components donated by Magpul are comprised predominantly of plastic, and weigh mere ounces. Forgetting the fact that it is preposterous to try to designate an inanimate object of being capable of behaving dangerously.

Second, those “random civilians” were NRA members, and were invited to come to Richmond to exercise their First Amendment rights in defense of the Second. As we said, even Governor Northam stated, “I thank the NRA for hosting a peaceful event.”

Of course, it should come as no surprise that Watts was confused. Her organization has no actual membership, although she claims to have millions of supporters and hundreds-of-thousands of “donors.” While both claims are suspect, the reference to “donors” seems particularly implausible. The bulk of her group’s funding, under the umbrella of Bloomberg’s parent company, Everytown, seems to originate from Bloomberg himself.

In contrast, NRA is an actual organization of members; more than five million of them. We are dedicated to freedom, as well as safe, responsible, and, as even one of the most anti-gun governors in the nation recently said, peaceful.

Sorry if that confuses you, Shannon.

SCOTUS Case Could Derail Effort to Negate Electoral CollegePosted: 20 Jan 2020 02:55 PM PST. . . Considering the constitutional questions of how state electors' votes are cast.
by Thomas Gallatin: On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear cases that hold significant implications for the Electoral College and states’ rights. During the 2016 presidential election, four Electoral College electors, one from Colorado and three from Washington, cast votes for candidates who did not win their state’s popular vote. In Colorado, the elector cast a vote for John Kasich instead of Hillary Clinton, and in Washington, three electors cast their votes for Colin Powell rather than Clinton. Both the states of Colorado and Washington are among approximately 30 states that require Electoral College electors to cast their votes in concurrence with their respective state’s popular vote.

Following the votes of the so-called “faithless electors,” both states responded — Colorado voided the elector’s vote and Washington fined the electors. The electors responded by suing their respective states; the Colorado elector won, but the Washington state supreme court ruled against the electors and upheld the fine.

The question that SCOTUS will answer is whether state requirements mandating that electors cast their vote with a state’s popular vote is constitutional. The ramifications of the Court’s ruling could derail the Left’s effort to circumvent the Electoral College via the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC), the effort by several blue states to throw their electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote regardless of the state’s popular vote. Ironically, 13 of the 16 states that have thus far joined the NPVIC movement have laws requiring EC electors to vote for their respective state’s popular-vote winner.

SCOTUS will likely hear the cases in April with a ruling expected in June, so this should be decided well before the 2020 election.

Opening Salvos in the Trump Impeachment TrialPosted: 20 Jan 2020 02:47 PM PST. . . Trump's legal team blasts impeachment, while Democrats continue to play games.
by Nate Jackson: “The Articles of Impeachment submitted by House Democrats are a dangerous attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their President. This is a brazen and unlawful attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and interfere with the 2020 election — now just months away.” That’s the summation of the Democrat impeachment charade according to a letter to the U.S. Senate from White House Counsel Pat Cipollone and Donald Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow. The letter was the opening statement from Trump’s defense team as the Senate’s impeachment trial gets underway.

The blistering letter continues, “The Articles of Impeachment are constitutionally invalid on their face. They fail to allege any crime or violation of law whatsoever, let alone ‘high Crimes and Misdemeanors,’ as required by the Constitution.”

Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, a self-described liberal Democrat, has also joined Trump’s legal team in a limited role, though, as he put it, “I think it overstates it to say I’m a member of the Trump team.” In any case, he’s been a harsh critic of impeachment for months, and he slammed Democrats for impeaching Trump over “two non-criminal actions” that aren’t’ actually impeachable. Worse, Dershowitz said, their actions amount to “the greatest nightmare” of Founders like James Madison and Alexander Hamilton. Rather than counter Dershowitz on the merits, Leftmedia outlets just reiterate that he served on the defense team for Jeffrey Epstein … though somehow the name of Epstein’s buddy Bill Clinton eludes the Beltway’s intrepid reporters.

What else is the Leftmedia doing? Worrying over how partial Republican senators are going to be during the trial.

Speaking of being impartial, here’s what one senator had to say about this partisan political theater:It has shaken me that we stand at the brink of removing a President — not because of a popular groundswell to remove him and not because of the magnitude of the wrongs he’s committed — but because … a small group of people who hate [the President] and hate his policies … very cleverly and very doggedly exploit the institutions of freedom that we hold dear and almost succeed in undoing him. That was a letter written by now-Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in defense of Bill Clinton in 1999. The extent to which Schumer gets it backwards would be funny if it weren’t so serious.

As a final note, expect to frequently hear the name Lev Parnas in the same scandalized tones usually reserved for Russian mobsters. Who is Parnas? A crony of Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, who has documents pertaining to both Trump’s policy toward Ukraine and the firing of former Ukrainian Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch. Like the Government Accountability Office’s bogus finding that Trump broke the law by temporarily delaying military aid to Ukraine, however, Parnas is part of the Democrats’ new narrative that “further investigation” is critical before the Senate can vote on Trump’s fate.

New Book Profiles Corrupt Progressives: 5 Wealthy BidensPosted: 20 Jan 2020 02:09 PM PSTJoe Biden is 'king of the sweetheart deal, with no less
than five family members benefiting from his largesse,
favorable access and powerful position for commercial
gain,' per author of Profiles In Corruptionby Free Press International: In his new book “Profiles In Corruption”, investigative reporter Peter Schweizer says that prominent progressive politicians “are making sweetheart deals, generating side income, bending the law to their own benefits and using legislation to advance their own interests.”

The New York Post on Saturday published excerpts from Schweizer’s book which details how Biden, who continues to be among the frontrunners for the Democratic Party’s 2020 presidential nomination, is the “king of the sweetheart deal, with no less than five family members benefiting from his largesse, favorable access and powerful position for commercial gain.”

In Biden’s case, the report said, “these deals include foreign partners and, in some cases, even U.S. taxpayer dollars.”

The Biden family members are Joe’s son Hunter, son-in-law Howard, brothers James and Frank, and sister Valerie.

James Biden
Schweizer writes that Joe Biden’s younger brother James “has been an integral part of the family political machine from the earliest days when he served as finance chair of Joe’s 1972 Senate campaign.”

The author then details the case James Biden and HillStone International, a subsidiary of the huge construction management firm, Hill International:The president of HillStone International was Kevin Justice, who grew up in Delaware and was a longtime Biden family friend. On November 4, 2010, according to White House visitors’ logs, Justice visited the White House and met with Biden adviser Michele Smith in the Office of the Vice President. Less than three weeks later, HillStone announced that James Biden would be joining the firm as an executive vice president.

James appeared to have little or no background in housing construction, but that did not seem to matter to HillStone. His bio on the company’s website noted his “40 years of experience dealing with principals in business, political, legal and financial circles across the nation and internationally…”

James Biden was joining HillStone just as the firm was starting negotiations to win a massive contract in war-torn Iraq. Six months later, the firm announced a contract to build 100,000 homes. It was part of a $35 billion, 500,000-unit project deal won by TRAC Development, a South Korean company. HillStone also received a $22 million U.S. federal government contract to manage a construction project for the State Department.

David Richter, son of the parent company’s founder, was not shy in explaining Hill Stone’s success in securing government contracts. It really helps, he told investors at a private meeting, to have “the brother of the vice president as a partner,” according to someone who was there. The Iraq project was massive, perhaps the single most lucrative project for the firm ever. In 2012, Charlie Gasparino of Fox Business reported that HillStone officials expected the project to “generate $1.5 billion in revenues over the next three years.”

That amounted to more than three times the revenue the company produced in 2011. A group of minority partners, including James Biden, stood to split about $735 million. “There’s plenty of money for everyone if this project goes through,” said one company official. The deal was all set, but HillStone made a crucial error. In 2013, the firm was forced to back out of the contract because of a series of problems, including a lack of experience by Hill and TRAC Development, its South Korean associate firm.

But HillStone continued doing significant contract work in the embattled country, including a six-year contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. James Biden remained with Hill International, which accumulated contracts from the federal government for dozens of projects, including projects in the United States, Puerto Rico, Mozambique, and elsewhere.Hunter Biden

While Hunter Biden’s landing a lucrative gig with a Ukrainian energy firm despite having no experience in the industry is well documented, Schweizer also cited his involvement with an entity called Burnham Financial Group, where his business partner Devon Archer — who’d been at Yale with Hunter — sat on the board of directors.

Schweizer writes:Burnham became the vehicle for a number of murky deals abroad, involving connected oligarchs in Kazakhstan and state-owned businesses in China.

But one of the most troubling Burnham ventures was here in the United States, in which Burnham became the center of a federal investigation involving a $60 million fraud scheme against one of the poorest Indian tribes in America, the Oglala Sioux. Devon Archer was arrested in New York in May 2016 and charged with “orchestrating a scheme to defraud investors and a Native American tribal entity of tens of millions of dollars.”

Other victims of the fraud included several public and union pension plans. Although Hunter Biden was not charged in the case, his fingerprints were all over Burnham.

The “legitimacy” that his name and political status as the vice president’s son lent to the plan was brought up repeatedly in the trial. The scheme was explicitly designed to target pension funds that had “socially responsible investing” clauses, including pension funds of labor union organizations that had publicly supported Joe Biden’s political campaigns in the past. Indeed, eight of the eleven pension funds that lost their money were either government employee or labor union pension funds.

Joe Biden has “a long-standing alliance with labor.” He closely identifies with organized labor. “I make no apologies,” he has said. “I am a union man, period.” And many public unions have endorsed him over the years. Transcripts from Devon Archer’s trial offer a clearer picture of Hunter Biden’s role at Burnham Asset Management, in particular, the fact that the firm relied on his father’s name and political status as a means of both recruiting pension money into the scheme and alleviating investors’ concerns.

Tim Anderson, a lawyer who did legal work on the issuance of the tribal bonds, recounts seeing Hunter while visiting the Burnham office in New York City to meet with Bevan Cooney, who was later convicted in the case. The political ties that Biden and Archer had were considered key to the Burnham brand.

As stated in an August 2014 email, Jason Galanis, who was convicted in the bond scheme, agreed with an unidentified associate who also thought the company had “value beyond capital” because of their political connections. In the closing arguments at the trial, one of Devon Archer’s defense attorneys, Matthew Schwartz, explained to the jury that it was impossible to talk about the bond scheme without mentioning Hunter Biden’s name. This “was perfectly sensible,” according to Schwartz, “because Hunter Biden was part of the Burnham team.”Howard Krein
Krein, the chief medical officer of StartUp Health, is married to Joe Biden’s youngest daughter, Ashley.

Schweizer writes:StartUp Health is an investment consultancy based out of New York City, and in June 2011 the company barely had a website. The firm was the brainchild of three siblings from Philadelphia. Steven Krein is CEO and co-founder, while his brother, Dr. Howard Krein, serves as chief medical officer.

Sister Bari serves as the firm’s chief strategy officer. A friend named Unity Stoakes is a co-founder and serves as president. StartUp Health was barely up and running when, in June 2011, two of the company’s executives were ushered into the Oval Office of the White House. They met with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The following day the new company would be featured at a large health care tech conference being run by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and StartUp Health executives became regular visitors to the White House, attending events in 2011, 2014 and 2015.

How did StartUp Health gain access to the highest levels of power in Washington? There was nothing particularly unique about the company, but for this: The chief medical officer of StartUp Health, Howard Krein, is married to Joe Biden’s youngest daughter, Ashley.

“I happened to be talking to my father-in-law that day and I mentioned Steve and Unity were down there [in Washington, D.C.],” recalled Howard Krein. “He knew about StartUp Health and was a big fan of it. He asked for Steve’s number and said, ‘I have to get them up here to talk with Barack.’ The Secret Service came and got Steve and Unity and brought them to the Oval Office.”

StartUp Health offers to provide new companies technical and relationship advice in exchange for a stake in the business. Demonstrating and highlighting the fact that you can score a meeting with the president of the United States certainly helps prove a strategic company asset: high-level contacts.

Vice President Joe Biden continued to help Krein promote his company at several appearances through his last months in the White House, including one in January 2017, where he made a surprise showing at the StartUp Health Festival in San Francisco. The corporate event, open only to StartUp Health members, enabled the 250 people in attendance to chat in a closed session with the vice president.Frank Biden
Schweizer said, Frank Biden, who at 66 is 11 years younger than Joe, has leveraged his powerful brother’s name for financial gain.

Schweizer writes:In late March 2009, Vice President Joe Biden landed in Costa Rica aboard Air Force Two, and went to the Costa Rican presidential palace for a one-on-one with President Oscar Arias. The Biden visit had symbolic significance. The last time a high-ranking American official had visited the country was back in 1997, when Bill Clinton had come.

Joe Biden’s trip to Costa Rica came at a fortuitous time for his brother Frank, who was busy working deals in the country. Just months after Vice President Biden’s visit, in August, Costa Rica News announced a new multilateral partnership “to reform Real Estate in Latin America” between Frank Biden, a developer named Craig Williamson, and the Guanacaste Country Club, a newly planned resort. The partnership, which appears to be ongoing, was wrapped in a beautiful package as a “call on resources available to the companies and individuals to reform the social, economic and environmental practices of real estate developers across the world by example.”

In real terms, Frank’s dream was to build in the jungles of Costa Rica thousands of homes, a world-class golf course, casinos, and an anti-aging center. The Costa Rican government was eager to cooperate with the vice president’s brother. As it happened, Joe Biden had been asked by President Obama to act as the Administration’s point man in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Frank’s vision for a country club in Costa Rica received support from the highest levels of the Costa Rican government— despite his lack of experience in building such developments. He met with the Costa Rican ministers of education and energy and environment, as well as the president of the country.

On October 4, 2016, the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education signed a letter of intent with Frank’s company, Sun Fund Americas. The project involved allowing a company called GoSolar to operate solar power facilities in Costa Rica. The previous year, the Obama-Biden administration’s OPIC had authorized a $6.5 million taxpayer-backed loan for the project. In June 2014, Vice President Joe Biden announced the launch of the Caribbean Energy Security Initiative (CESI).

The program called for increasing access to financing for Caribbean energy projects that he strongly supported. American taxpayer dollars were dedicated to facilitating deals that matched U.S. government financing with local energy projects in Caribbean countries, including Jamaica. In January 2015, USAID announced that it would be spending $10 million to boost renewable energy projects in Jamaica over the next five years.

After Joe Biden brought together leaders for CESI, brother Frank’s firm Sun Fund Americas announced that it was “engaged in projects and is in negotiations with governments of other countries in the [Caribbean] region for both its Solar and Waste to Energy development services.” As if to push the idea along, the Obama administration’s OPIC provided a $47.5 million loan to support the construction of a 20-megawatt solar facility in Clarendon, Jamaica.

Frank Biden’s Sun Fund Americas later announced that it had signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) to build a 20-megawatt solar facility in Jamaica.Valerie Biden Owens
Valerie Biden Owens has managed all of her older brother Joe’s political campaigns over the past several decades.

Schweizer writes:During his years in the Senate, Biden’s family benefited financially in other ways as he leveraged political power.

Joe’s sister Valerie ran all of his Senate campaigns, as well as his presidential runs in 1988 and 2008. But she was also a senior partner in a political messaging firm named Joe Slade White & Company; the only two executives listed at the firm were Joe Slade White and Valerie.

The firm received large fees from the Biden campaigns that Valerie was running. Two and a half million dollars in consulting fees flowed to her firm from Citizens for Biden and Biden For President Inc. during the 2008 presidential bid alone. Joe Slade White & Company worked for Biden campaigns over eighteen years.--------------------

Impeachment Takes Center Stage As The Circus Comes To TownPosted: 20 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PSTby Rick Manning: The circus is coming to Washington, D.C. and Senators are not getting any popcorn. Speaker Pelosi’s imperial trooper like march with impeachment documents last week triggered the Senate impeachment trial and this is what you can expect.

Chief Justice John Roberts will be in the chair, and Senators will have to sit quietly in their seats without cell phones, computers or any other electronic devices as House impeachment managers and the President’s defense team scuffle over the rules of conduct for the trial on Tuesday with the Chief Justice making rulings subject to the agreement of a majority of the Senate. These rules will set the stage for the conduct of the trial, because unlike a normal judicial proceeding, an impeachment trial is conducted under the closed rules agreed upon by a majority of Senators, so don’t expect this to look much like “Law and Order”, “Perry Mason” or any other court based crime show you have watched.

If all goes as planned, here is what you can expect to happen for the first five days of the trial.

Wednesday and Thursday will feature House managers, led by Representative Adam Schiff, who will present their case to the Senate. No witness will be called, so Schiff will just lay out the case for the two Articles passed by the House. It is likely that he will attempt to bring into evidence witness statements and other things that were not presented or heard in the House, that he feels helps their case as part of this presentation. There will likely be clash between the President’s team and the House over claims that go outside of the scope of the Articles and the Chief Justice and Senate will have to decide whether they will be allowed.

Friday and Saturday will feature the President’s defense, which will be heard for the first time, as the House did not allow the President’s team to enter facts into the record beyond cross-examining witnesses. It would be reasonable to expect that the Chief Justice and Senate will allow the President’s team a tremendous amount of leeway in detailing their case, since he has not been allowed heretofore to take apart the House impeachment claims.

When the Senate returns on Monday, Senators will have submitted written questions to the House managers and the President’s defense team to be read by the Chief Justice, with a high degree of potential for clash between the sides.

When the Senators’ questions have been addressed, it is expected that the Senators will retire to their respective party conferences to answer the question of whether they want to hear witnesses or not. Upon returning to the floor, the Senate can either choose to allow witnesses to testify with a vote on each witness likely, or they can move to dispose of the case either through acquittal or conviction.

The discussion of the grounds for impeachment have been debated ad nauseum already, but it is my hope and expectation that the President’s team will be allowed to show the video of Joe Biden bragging about extorting the firing of a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating the company which his son served on the Board of Directors. While this might astonish readers, the simple fact is that many Senators have not seen this clip, and it goes to the heart of why the President mentioned Joe Biden and Burisma when speaking to the Ukraine President about corruption.

Another piece of evidence that has not been widely reported is the telephone conversation between Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and the President on Aug. 31, immediately preceding a meeting involving Vice President Pence, Johnson and the Ukrainian President. The meeting occurred right after the news that Ukrainian aid was being held up broke, and Johnson asked the President what he wanted to ask for in exchange for the aid being released. The President told him nothing: “No way. I would never do that. Who told you that?” And, that he would likely be happy with the decision that was made: “We’re reviewing it now, and you’ll probably like my final decision,” indicating he would support it, which he did on Sept. 11.

This directly contradicts the entirety of the House “quid pro quo” case since it was based upon the “presumption” of a U.S. ambassador about what the President wanted without that ambassador actually having talked to the President about it.

As an aside, there is nothing wrong with the President of the United States seeking to use foreign aid to influence that actions of foreign governments. One would expect that foreign aid would be tied to behaving in U.S. interests in some meaningful way, otherwise, the entirety of the foreign aid program would be nothing more than an international welfare system, and should be abandoned as not serving our nation’s interest.

Americans for Limited Government will be following the trial in the Senator closely with analysis, articles, tweets and Facebook posts, to make certain that you have the facts as controversies erupt.

Impeachment is an extremely grave process, as no trial has ever successfully removed a President. Three out of four impeachment inquiries/votes have occurred in the past 45 years with President Nixon resigning prior to a House vote, Bill Clinton surviving a Senate trial, and now President Trump facing accusers.

While it is the Senate’s responsibility to vote, ultimately, the fight on the Senate floor is for the hearts and minds of the American public. So, in a very real sense, the House managers and the President’s team will be seeking to convince you, your family, friends and neighbors. So stay informed so you can provide the facts to your circle of influence to avoid the public supporting conviction due to the biased Google search headlines which are designed to color public opinion.

Impeachment is here. The fight for America is on.

The Gig Is UpPosted: 20 Jan 2020 01:25 PM PSTby Paul Jacob, Contributing Author: Eventually, champions of government intervention, of all forms of thwarting independent judgment and killing dreams, find themselves under assault. From the public.

And you don’t need an economics degree to grasp why.

Initially, an intervention prevents other people from pursuing projects, getting jobs, earning a living. Then, finally, government meddling goes a step too far. Maybe lawmakers had “good intentions,” but hey! This is me now!

Your legislation needs tweaking!

This is where we are in California’s attack on the so-called gig economy. Hatched to “protect” Uber drivers or some such nonsense, Assembly Bill 5 makes it massively harder for companies to classify freelancers as independent contractors. After it was signed into law, many companies—from blogs to transcription services—told California-based freelancers adios.

Millions of people lost work and options.

What walks of life are affected? All.

“California’s new gig worker law is . . . threatening all performing arts,” complains Brendan Rawson at CalMatters.org. California has “overreached.” Gotta nip-and-tuck that otherwise “worthy” bill! Use only the magic arbitrary intervention in our lives that works!

Not everybody now being hurt was previously okay with pushing other people around, of course. I’ve never been a fan. One of my missions is defending the right of citizen initiative. Well, AB5 makes it much harder and more expensive for petition campaigns to hire people for such gigs as collecting signatures for an initiative in California.

AB5 attacks earning a living, speaking freely, associating freely, and petitioning one’s government freely. Maybe the law will be rescinded. But there’s more mischief where that came from.

So let’s protect other people’s freedom . . . and stop the overreach before it reaches us.

This is Common Sense. I’m Paul Jacob.

How MLK Channeled the Spirit of 1776Posted: 20 Jan 2020 01:07 PM PSTMartin Luther King Jr. waves to supporters in
Aug. 1963 on the Mall in Washington, D.C.
by Jarrett Stepman: Martin Luther King Jr. Day became a federal holiday when it was signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983.

As Americans celebrate MLK Day, it’s important to recognize the contributions of King and the tradition of ideas he espoused that put him in the pantheon of great Americans.

The federal holiday may have been created in 1983, but the true origin of King’s legacy reaches all the way back to 1776.

Some of the loudest voices in today’s discourse insist that America’s origin is fundamentally flawed and broken. The New York Times’ recently-launched 1619 Project, for instance, aims to “reframe” America’s past to convince Americans that slavery and racism are the true heart of our civilization. The project’s headline essay declared that “our founding ideals of liberty and equality were false.”

One man who didn’t think our founding ideals were false: Martin Luther King Jr.

While the study of slavery is essential to understanding America’s past, it is also vital to recognize just how much of a connection King had to the Founding Fathers and the ideas that animated them.

Those ideas were born in the context of a world in which tyranny was the norm. Political rule of, by, and for the people was no more than an experiment.

Much like Frederick Douglass, King didn’t shy away from criticizing America for failing to uphold the “self-evident” truths cited in its founding documents.

In particular, as I explain in my book “The War on History: The Conspiracy to Rewrite America’s Past,” King followed a thread of ideas stemming from Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence, through Abraham Lincoln, and finally to his own time when the equal rights of black Americans were being denied by much of the country.

King was not so small-minded as to reject the ideas of the declaration because its writer, a slave owner, failed to live up to them. Instead, he embraced those ideas as fundamentally correct and recognized how they were the key to bringing about a “new birth of freedom” in his own time.

In his Mountaintop speech of 1968, given the day before his assassination, King said the black men conducting sit-ins at segregated lunch counters “were really standing up for the best in the American dream and taking the whole nation back to those great wells of democracy, which were dug deep by the Founding Fathers in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.”

In his more famed “I Have a Dream” speech, King called the Declaration of Independence “the most eloquent and unequivocal expression of the dignity of man ever set forth in a sociopolitical document.”

He recognized the power and the truth encapsulated in that document, which laid the foundation for ending not only slavery, but laws that treated people unequally based on their skin color.

Even in the most tumultuous moments of racial tension in the late 1960s, according to historian Peter C. Myers, King “was deeply grateful for America itself, for its original and enduring promise, and its native propensity for reform.”

Regardless of its faults, King recognized that America stood as a unique bastion of freedom in a world in which liberty and justice were rarities.

He ultimately succeeded because he spoke in the natural rights language that the American people instinctively knew to be true.

King’s legacy is that he helped expand the founding promise of liberty and equal rights to all Americans. More than any other figure, he helped cash in that “promissory note” of liberty and justice for all, which the Founding Fathers had left.

In that legacy, King stands athwart today’s radicals who wish to tear America up by its roots.

As is the case with many great men, King was not without his flaws. He flirted with and even embraced failed socialist economic ideas, and fell short in his treatment of women, if recently unearthed FBI documents alleging gross misbehavior are true.

As with many great but complicated individuals of our past, King is worth celebrating in spite of his faults and limitations—as is America.

Life, much like history, can be messy and full of wrong turns, for man is fallen and imperfect. We aspire to be a shining city upon a hill, but that shining city will always appear dim in light of heaven.

Even still, King had faith that the American people, derived from all races and backgrounds, were attached in mind and heart to the ennobling legacy of 1776—the mystic chords of memory, as Lincoln would call it.

As the late historian and political philosopher Harry Jaffa wrote of King: “He dreamed of a day when the principles of the Declaration of Independence would be fully realized, not only in the institutions of American government, but in the spirit of American society.”

Contrast King’s ethos to those who today deplore “colorblind racism,” or target the Founders—including the man who wrote the declaration—for historical erasure. It would be a shame if we allow the noxious pull of identity politics to undo the work of King and others.

The American system allows us to preserve what is best about ourselves, while occasionally correcting our deepest faults.

King deserves enduring recognition from all Americans for his role in bringing civil rights to fruition and, in some ways more importantly, convincing the majority of Americans that racism stood in opposition to our founding and Biblical principles.

Our challenge today, as in King’s, is to preserve and further the legacy of 1776, and to inculcate informed patriotism among future generations so that they may have a fuller understanding of the right and wrong paths in their own time.

Making America Like CaliforniaPosted: 20 Jan 2020 12:42 PM PSTMario Murilloby Mario Murillo: Even though California is an unambiguous disaster…Democrats are fighting to make us all surrender to California’s agenda. That is what the 2020 Election is about. It’s all about making America like California.

Michael Bloomberg, Democratic presidential candidate: “I think that California can serve as a great example for the rest of this country. You have led the way on climate change, on fighting gun violence and on criminal justice, and you have as importantly, opened immigrants with open arms.”

God is warning us in advance. He wants us to lose our denial. Don’t look at your red state, or your on fire church, and laugh off the threat. It is a real and present. The Holy Spirit is calling for immediate action. He has a plan to stop the California agenda.

Can this agenda really spread to the other states of America? It’s already there. Here is how it got there and why it will spread even further:

Red States on the verge of turning blue: Texas is now considered a toss up state for 2020. Don’t forget, there was a day not long ago when believers in California could not imagine the laws that will, in the future, lead to banning Bibles and shutting down Christian services. We never imagined losses to Democrats or even close races in many Red States. The amount of out-of-state money that was poured into Texas to defeat Ted Cruz is an omen for future elections.

Teachers unions: The National Education Association is the largest interest group in the United States. That means the roots of radical indoctrination on gender are already in your child’s classroom. This union is waiting for the events in California to unfold and gain wider acceptance before they make their move.

The Democrat Party: Because of the mini blue wave, you will see these elements of California’s agenda slipped into their political platform.

Gavin Newsom: If you think Jerry Brown was bad, Gavin Newsom is even worse. He will put every last drop of his influence and California’s resources to spread California’s model. The left leaning Washington Post said, “For those who think California politics is on the far-left fringe of the national spectrum, stand by. The next election season, already well underway here, will showcase a younger generation of Democrats that is more liberal and personally invested in standing up to President Trump’s Washington.”

Universities: The local university your child attends already includes these tenets as a part of education. Students will earn their grades based on agreeing with these values.

Hollywood celebrities: They are getting bolder and bolder about sexual immorality. They label any young person that who doesn’t agree intolerant and ignorant.

Social media: In a speech at Google headquarters, LGBT activist Samuel Brinton promised to “figure out” how to stop “pastors…” “I may not be able to find every little camp … every pastor, but I can make it something that is culturally unacceptable,” he said.”

The captains of social media—Bay area based, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube—want this agenda to take over of America. Every American young person has at least one of these accounts.

Lukewarm Churches: They are the biggest reason this radical agenda will spread. The combination of leftist radicals and lukewarm churches created the perfect storm in California. That weather pattern is now all over America now.

Beloved, I don’t care if you are in Oklahoma or Alabama…this hideous agenda is festering and God wants us to take action now. I believe we can reverse this curse and see nationwide revival. Do these things:

Pray in a way you have never prayed before: It is time to call together a unified company of intercessors. It is time to divert them away from separate issues and focus prayer on a specific target.

I said this before: Stand between heaven and earth as a true intercessor. Invoke the Name above all Names to get to the very Throne of God with your petition. Do what Moses did who raised the rod of Aaron over the battle. When you pray, pray violently, pray exactingly, detailing the damage you want done and where you want it done. By the Spirit, speak directly to evil powers. Call them out and cast them down. Cut their power over America.

Get out of the lukewarm churches. Stop supporting them. Stop kidding yourself that you are there to minister to people. We no longer have that luxury. If you are not hearing the Bible preached, and you are not seeing the Holy Spirit move, get out.

Never mind all of the perks. Consider the word of God which says, “Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. –Proverbs 16:19

Even more direct are the words of Paul: “having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” -2 Timothy 3:5

I promise you there is a man or woman of God not far from you who is staying true and fighting the battle of their life. They are getting it from both sides: A godless generation and seeker church models that mock their integrity. Join them! Watch the Holy Spirit raise up an army.

Become an informed witness. I have written to you about stolen thunder How Ben Shapiro and Jordan Peterson reach millions because the expose lies. Follow this link to read the article Stolen Thunder https://wp.me/p1vrzp-5oR

Christians have an even greater capacity to expose lies and oppose bad government. Proverbs 28: 2 says, “Because of the transgression of a land, many are its princes; But by a man of understanding and knowledge Right will be prolonged.”

Even more powerful is this promise from Jesus: Luke 21:13 “But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14 Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.”

Someone reading this is not supposed to be a preacher. You are supposed to be in government and in journalism…perhaps even television news. The point is that if Christians would just stop hiding and let the Holy Spirit train them and embolden them we would be able to disrupt Satan’s plans for America.

At the very least, we need to go to our children’s schools armed with an understanding of parental rights and a firm knowledge of our convictions. We can stop radical teachers and politicians if we obey the Holy Spirit.

It is not too late for any state in America…it is not even too late for California. We just need to be bold and obedient. However, we are running out of time.

Finally, I must say what I have said to you before: When God sees someone take up the mighty weapons of God—in the Name of Jesus—and attempt the impossible—God will muster all of the resources of heaven to bring that someone total victory.

The 10 best signs at the Virginia 2nd Amendment rally in RichmondPosted: 21 Jan 2020 05:18 AM PSTMonday’s Lobby Day rally in Richmond, Virginia, was a huge success for 2nd Amendment advocates in the besieged state and across the nation. Over 20,000 patriots came to express their distaste for proposed legislation by Democrats to greatly curtail our 2nd Amendment right. There were no arrests for violence and only one arrest for a mask-law violation. All-in-all, it was one gigantic win for America. There were plenty of sign-toting patriots expressing their perspectives visually. We accumulated some of them from the annals of Twitter and delivered them here for posterity. We do not claim copyright on any of these images and linked to the source Tweets for reference. Here are the ten best we found in no particular order…There may come a time when we must defend the 2nd Amendment by invoking the 2nd Amendment. Until then, our 1st Amendment rights are our best tool for keeping oppressive, draconian Democrats from getting their way.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Vintage: Joe Biden asked by Tom Brokaw about corruption as #BidenIsCorrupt trendsPosted: 21 Jan 2020 04:26 AM PSTA group associated with Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign released a video of NBC’s Tom Brokaw asking former Vice President Joe Biden about his involvement with helping a company that employed his son, Hunter. This isn’t about Burisma, the company at the heart of the current impeachment trial. This is ANOTHER company for which Biden allegedly used his influence to benefit them. When Biden was still in the Senate and his son was coming out of law school, his influence in Delaware allegedly helped Hunter get a job at NBNA, a credit card company where he started earning around $100,000 a year. Joe Biden himself received $214,000 in campaign contributions from the company and its employees.“At the same time, you were fighting for a bankruptcy bill that NBNA really wanted to get passed through the Senate, making it much tougher for everyone else to file for bankruptcy,” Brokaw said. He continued to list off apparent allegations of corruption in which Biden worked on behalf of the company.Biden and Sanders supporters are taking to Twitter to argue about the video and the trending #BidenIsCorrupt hashtag. Conservatives are also weighing in on the exchange.I don't care how many people tweet and retweet #BidenIsCorrupt there's only one man responsible for each and every one … @BernieSanders.Whether you are #KHive or Klobuchar, Warren or Buttigieg each following should make it clear we will not tolerate the Bros shit in 2020! https://t.co/uzG5hiS9Zu— | James Adam Kent | (@loudonkleer) January 21, 2020Possibly even more corrupt than Biden. Another AOC lie: There were ‘almost no police officers’ at Virginia rallyPosted: 21 Jan 2020 03:39 AM PSTThe Lobby Day event in Richmond, Virginia, yesterday was an unambiguous success for defenders of the 2nd Amendment. Over 20,000 patriots surrounded the Capitol Building and protested draconian gun control laws proposed by Democrats. There were no arrests for violence (though one woman allegedly broke the state’s odd anti-mask law), which seemed to catch mainstream media by surprise. In retrospect, it seems like the massive police presence, which included state, county, and city law enforcement as well as assistance from the FBI, was unnecessary. The last place anyone wants to start trouble is a place with thousands of armed patriots. Nevertheless, Governor Ralph Northam erred on the side of caution following the tragedy in Charlottesville in 2017.Leave it to Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to attempt to taint the event with bald-faced lies. In her efforts to virtue signal before a crowd at the Blackout for Human Rights: MLK Now 2020 event in Harlem’s Riverside Church, she said there were almost no police officers at the event.“There’s this gun rights protest happening down in Richmond. On MLK Day!” she siad. “But here’s the image that has struck with me the most about that. When we go out and march for the dignity and the recognition of the lives of people like Freddie Gray and Eric Garner, the whole place is surrounded by police in riot gear without a gun in sight. And here are all of these people flying Confederate flags, with semi-automatic weapons, and there’s almost no police officers at that protest.”Even with the strong police presence at the two protests she invoked, hundreds of protesters were arrested and dozens of police officers were injured. There was millions of dollars worth of damage. At the 2nd Amendment event yesterday, no one was injured, no damage was done, and many even stayed after the event ended to help clean up the mess. While trying to point her finger at racism and badmouth law enforcement, AOC highlighted the stark differences between a leftist protest and patriot protest. Over 20,000 2nd Amendment advocates showed America how peaceful protests work.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Why Democrats have already lost the impeachment battle just as it’s getting startedPosted: 21 Jan 2020 03:09 AM PSTAs the impeachment trial in the Senate begins, there are two battles that are being waged. The first is obvious: Congressional Democrats versus the White House over whether the President should be removed from office. The second is less obvious, at least to those who do not pay much attention to American media. It will be the massive forces of progressive media versus the small but potent voices of conservative media fighting to spin the narrative.Democrats will lose both of these battles. Or, to be more accurate, they’ve already lost the battles. Barring John Bolton bringing to his testimony a recording of President Trump saying, “Tell Ukraine if they don’t investigate my political opponent, Joe Biden, I will not send them the aid they want,” there is zero chance 20 Republican Senators will vote to have him removed. That means the only real battle is over which side of the media wins more hearts and minds of voters. There are certain takeaways Democrats want to deliver to Americans through their mainstream media proxies during the impeachment trial. The biggest one is the narrative that President Trump committed impeachable offenses. The second biggest yet infinitely more important one for them is that President Trump should be voted out in November. The third message – call it the Democrats’ cherry on top – is that Republicans on Capitol Hill are covering up for President Trump and must be removed in November as well. But their best weapon for delivering these takeaways is tainted. After over three years of unhinged, biased, and single-sided reporting from CNN, MSNBC, NY Times, Washington Post, and network news, their credibility among the people who count is completely shot. Sure, the vast majority of Trump-hating Democrats have been and will continue to pay obeisance to their mainstream media heroes like Rachel Maddow and Jake Tapper, but there’s a group that they lost with their repetitive false reporting since 2016. That group consists of Democrats who don’t hate President Trump (and there are more than some might think) and Independents who have been burned by the Steele Dossier, the Mueller investigation, and every other “bombshell” mainstream media dropped on us that turned into nothing of consequence. As tainted as mainstream media is, there is still a risk. We need only to look at the Nazis and Joseph Goebbels to see how the left intends to control the narrative about impeachment. Replace “the state” with “the Democrats” and you’ll see their strategy clearly depicted in this quote:“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”In other words, the truth is the greatest enemy of the Democrats. They will use their mainstream media proxies to spread anti-Trump propaganda from now until election day, but during the impeachment trial they will put in extra effort to make it stick. This is why we are sacrificing revenue through donations to dedicate everything we have towards exposing the Democrats’ big lie. They will lose. How badly they lose will be determined by how well conservative media is able to get through truth to the masses. The election can be decided in the next few weeks if we’re strong enough in our efforts to make it happen. They have the forces of propaganda, indoctrination, and hatred on their side. All we have is the truth, but it will be enough. Here’s the question that needs to be asked throughout the impeachment trial: “Why did Democrats halt progress and waste our time for this?” Impeachment is a grave process, and not in the fake way Pelosi invokes. It should never have been made political.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Donate for truthful impeachment coveragePosted: 21 Jan 2020 02:44 AM PSTThe impeachment trial is here and it’s already as ugly as we expected. Every left-leaning mainstream media outlet is putting the full force of their reach towards harming President Trump, the GOP, and American patriots who support them. We intend to do our part in countering their narrative and we’re asking our readers for help. From now until the end of the impeachment trial, we will use every dollar donated to the site to boost truthful articles about the impeachment debacle. All other needs are put on hold, including costs for maintaining this website which I will cover out of pocket. This is an important and fruitful way for patriots to help support President Trump and expose mainstream media’s bias.$10 will help pro-Trump stories reach 3,000-4,000 Americans$100 will reach 30,000-40,000$1,000 would be enough to reach every person in Minneapolis, though we will spread out the reach to the whole countryMany patriots have sought a way to help the President and the GOP not only win the impeachment trial in the Senate, but also alert as many Americans as possible that the Democrats’ partisan political maneuver is a con job. Here’s your chance.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Conservative group seeks Twitter patriots to amplify the #KAG message in 2020Posted: 21 Jan 2020 01:13 AM PSTThe 2020 election battle is going to be fought on the airwaves, by word-of-mouth, at rallies, and through articles. It will also be fought on social media. Unfortunately for conservatives, the odds are stacked against us in the mainstream and social media realms because the press is generally left-leaning while Big Tech players like Facebook, Google, and Twitter tend to suppress conservatives and their messaging. In an effort to counter the bias and allow patriots to connect on Twitter, an informal group of patriots is bringing conservatives together to help amplify each other’s digital voice. Their goal is to allow participants to find Tweets from other patriots to retweet and to give them a way to have their own Tweets advanced out as well.Twitter’s Terms of Service forbids artificial boosting of Tweets through the use of fake counts or automated posts. There are services out there that allow people to literally buy retweets or likes. This new group does not believe in artificially amplifying Tweets: Bots and other nefarious tools will be strictly prohibited. It’s just patriotic Americans working together to get their messages out to as many voters as possible.“Shadowbanning” and attacks from progressive account-reporting cabals can make it difficult for everyday patriots to have a voice, even on the “free” platforms of social media. This group hopes to counter the challenges faced by conservatives on Twitter by simply bringing them together so they can retweet each other. It’s very straightforward.Anyone interested in participating simply needs to Direct Message us at @NoqReport and we’ll connect you with the group’s organizers. November is quickly approaching. America’s future is at stake. Will you let your voice be heard?American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Dr. Michael Brown and Dr. James White debate Arminianism vs CalvinismPosted: 21 Jan 2020 12:44 AM PSTWere we selected by God to be saved regardless of our actions or do we choose whether or not we accept the grace that is offered? Bible scholars and theologians have debated the question for centuries. They will continue to debate the question until the end of our time on earth. One such debate between scholars caught my attention.Dr. Michael Brown and Dr. James White took up the issue with Brown taking the side of Arminianism and White taking the side of Calvinism. It’s a fascinating debate; both men clearly know why they believe what they believe and are excellent at making their points. I’m not going to insert my own commentary into the question at this time. Better to leave it to the scholars and your own prayerful understandings.I often invoke my displeasure towards Hollywood in calls to boycott mainstream American entertainment, but this can leave a gap in the way people spend their time. Here’s over two hours of time well spent.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Media’s Virginia rally narrative implodes to the surprise of no one on the rightPosted: 20 Jan 2020 04:46 PM PSTWe were told that a bunch of pro-liberty patriots getting together with  guns *gasp!* would surely lead to violence. We were told that it was going to be a ‘white nationalist rally in Virginia’. That nothing good can ever come from people defending their unalienable human rights. Then wouldn’t you know it, practical reality intercedes to decimate their pre-written story. First, there was the condemnation of a ‘journalist’ from NBC that couldn’t resist in pushing the ‘white supremacist’ false narrative to the limit. As reported by Fox news: NBC News’ Ben Collins slammed for warning of ‘white nationalist rally in Virginia’:Ahead of Monday’s gun-rights rally in Virginia, NBC News reporter Ben Collins labeled the event a “white nationalist” gathering Sunday, even as he warned against spreading “made-up stuff” on Twitter — prompting scores of critics to point out the apparent irony, and to condemn his network for sanctioning Collins’ checkered reporting on the so-called “dystopia beat.”“Reporters covering tomorrow’s white nationalist rally in Virginia, I’m absolutely begging you: Verify information before you send it out tomorrow, even if it’s a very sensational rumor you heard from a cop,” Collins wrote in his since-deleted tweet. “Don’t become a hero in neo-Nazi propaganda circles with made-up stuff.”Then of course, reality set in. All of those armed citizens tend to keep violence at bay. The quote from engineer and author Robert A. Heinlein being most appropriate here:“An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life.” Robert A. HeinleinThen all the video showed that despite the narrative, it was a nice cross section of pro-liberty America with one video quickly going viral:“Sir, are you a White Supremacist?” pic.twitter.com/JFhxLRfgv1— Zach Vorhies (@Perpetualmaniac) January 20, 2020There are reports that the authoritarians are panicking over the loss of support by certain groups. Hence the reason they ironically labeling that which has resisted racism as racism. Perhaps because that is their go-to accusation for anything that is in opposition to their tyranny.Liberty control is a form of oppression and originally based in racism. The fact that thousands from a cross-section of our society turned out for the support of liberty will panic the left, and not just because their usual media narrative has failed. But because they falsely think that we don’t really care about our unalienable human rights, they have chosen poorly on that score.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. AOC to billionaires: The people ‘don’t want your money, we want your power’Posted: 20 Jan 2020 03:58 PM PSTThe radical progressive wing of the New Democratic Party truly fails to understand why their ideas are so horrible. People like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have this notion that if they could only reach enough people with their extreme message against the rich, they can achieve their goal of complete government control over our lives. You see, to the far-left, authoritarianism is considered a positive so they can protect us from each other… and ourselves. It’s unfortunate that so many people really are starting to listen to her, Senator Bernie Sanders, and other Marxists who envision a utopia dominated by the upper political classes (not to be confused with the upper economic classes) who will make sure we’re all comfortable in our morphine-drip existence under Gargantuan Government. This is why the push so hard for the Green New Deal, known in conservative economic circles as the pathway to Modern Monetary Theory. But here’s the problem. Okay, so there are a ton of problems with their socialistic agenda, but here’s the problem as it pertains to the messaging depicted in the video below. Their authoritarianism can only be achieved by utilizing “the people” within a power structure that only benefits the elite. You’ll notice in her little slip that when she discusses wanting the people to take the power from billionaires like Jeff Bezos, she’s framing it within the concept of a “worker cooperative.”AOC says she wants this clip getting out there: pic.twitter.com/qV8sTcxqqM— Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) January 20, 2020“So, I don’t want your money as much as we want your power. The people, not me.”Therein lies a double-sided sword that few on the left seem to recognize. The first side is the idea that “I don’t want your money,” as in the people don’t want Jeff Bezos’ money. This isn’t true. Of course the people want the money. Wealth redistribution is a foundation of socialism, but she’s being honest when she says the people won’t get the money. In her world, it will be the government that gets the money to spend it “beneficially” on behalf of the people. But the power, which she wants the people to take, is the pathway through which the socialists get the money. Pushing the people to take the power within a business like Amazon gives them the feeling that they’re in control, and to some extent this will be true in the worker cooperative she envisions. But that control will be within the framework of a greater control mechanism established by government. Therefore, their control is limited by the shell that they would create. That’s an inadequate breakdown of the dynamic envisioned by the Democratic Socialists, but hopefully you can see where they’re heading. In the future, I’ll be sure to get more detailed in my analysis. The saddest part about her statement is that she thought it would be cut, clipped, and taken out of context. But there’s no need. What she meant by her words within context is actually worse than anything bad video editors could conceive.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. Perfect response at Virginia Rally: ‘Mainstream media be damned’Posted: 20 Jan 2020 12:05 PM PSTIf ever there was a message to be heard about gun control in general and Virginia’s proposed draconian laws in particular, it’s this one. An attendee of the Lobby Day rally at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond explained why he was there and how mainstream media needs to stop spreading a false narrative about gun owners’ rights activists.Outside the assembly of Virginia pro-2a pic.twitter.com/pLnkJvCl6t— Hunter Johnson (@flop_gen) January 20, 2020He wasn’t happy with Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, either. When asked what he thought about the Governor sealing up the Capitol, the activist suggested locking him and everyone else in there. It’s not a terrible idea.As a defense of the 2nd Amendment, this is one of the best messages we’ve heard in a while. But something tells me as more videos from the Virginia Rally emerge, we will hear similar messages of patriotism, equality, and preserving our natural rights.American Conservative MovementJoin fellow patriots as we form a grassroots movement to advance the cause of conservatism. NATIONAL REVIEW

WITH JIM GERAGHTYJanuary 21 2020Hypocrisy Reigns — from Impeachment to LifeOn the menu today: wondering if Democrats have thought through what they want to achieve with impeachment, with removal always being an extraordinarily remote possibility; why at least a little hypocrisy in politics and life is probably inevitable, and how to minimize its consequences; and Hillary Clinton unloads on Bernie Sanders in surprisingly personal terms. What Do Democrats Want to Achieve in This Impeachment? Many Democrats would like to remove the president from office. The votes aren’t there to do that in the Senate, and it is unlikely the votes were ever there. It may very well be that the votes would never be there under any circumstances, short of President Trump actually shooting people on Fifth Avenue, and even then, before they voted to remove, some Republican senators might want to know who he shot and how badly.Democrats no doubt believe that this is a great injustice, that their Republican colleagues are being close-minded, and that they are ...   READ MORE

FEATURED BOOKPhoto: Manhattan InstituteDigital CathedralsToday’s global Cloud is society’s first foundationally new infrastructure in nearly a century. It is comprised of thousands of warehouse-scale computers and history’s biggest network of “information superhighways.” Powering this data behemoth consumes more energy than all global aviation. Yet, as disruptive as the Cloud has already become, we are only at the end of the beginning of what digital masons are building for the 21st century.

In Digital Cathedrals, Mark Mills explores this new infrastructure through the lens of energy demand, and the implications for policymakers and regulators, who will be increasingly tempted—or enjoined—to engage issues of competition, fairness, and even social disruptions, along with the challenges of abuse of market power, both valid and trumped up.Buy NowManhattan Institute is a think tank whose mission is to develop and disseminate new ideas that foster greater economic choice and individual responsibility.

Click here to watch the interview.Taiwan is an independent country alreadyIn today’s War for the Free World, a key frontline is the Western Pacific where Communist China’s ambition to be the globe’s dominant power is much in evidence. Its fortified man-made islands in the South China Sea,  intensifying crackdown in Hong Kong, political warfare in Australia and naval build-up are ominous harbingers of trouble to come. Particularly worrying is the Chinese Communist Party’s harsh response to Taiwanese voters’ recent, overwhelming support for their island’s sovereignty and freedoms. Beijing is signaling its determination to use force to crush both. The woman who won a massive mandate for opposing such Chinese threats, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, has a powerful message to the PRC: Get over it. “Taiwan is an independent country already.” That is, of course, both true, morally right and in America’s vital interest.
