Distinguishing facts from propaganda during two months of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong is difficult, but important realities now appear clear. China solemnly agreed to special status for Hong Kong in the 1984 Sino–British Joint Declaration. THE FLIP SIDE

Monday, August 19, 2019 Greenland: Deal or No Deal? “President Trump on Sunday confirmed his interest in potentially purchasing Greenland, but said it wasn’t a priority… The [Wall Street] Journal reported Thursday that the president has privately asked advisers whether the U.S. can buy Greenland, expressing interest in its abundant resources and geopolitical importance… It isn’t clear how the U.S. would go about acquiring Greenland, and officials from both Greenland and Denmark have dismissed the idea in recent days.” Wall Street Journal From the Left The left is skeptical of the idea and instead advocates for improving existing alliances. “Is this crazy? Nope — despite what Twitter might make you think. The United States has actually pursued the purchase of Greenland before… In 1946, US Secretary of State James Byrnes — serving under President Harry Truman — broached the idea with the Danish foreign minister at a United Nations meeting in New York. Nothing ever came of it. Almost 100 years before that, Secretary of State William Seward — fresh off the US’s purchase of Alaska — apparently looked into buying Greenland from the Danes…

“Greenland is widely believed to be hugely rich in natural resources — including iron ore, lead, zinc, diamonds, gold, rare earth elements, uranium and oil. And much of it is currently untapped, due to the fact that, well, 80% of the country is covered by an ice sheet. But due to global warming, that ice sheet is melting rapidly… and that erosion of the ice sheet is expected to make the mining of Greenland’s natural resources more doable.”
Chris Cillizza, CNN

“It makes perfect sense if you happen to share Trump’s indifference to environmental issues and indigenous rights. Greenland is believed to contain a lot of natural resource wealth that is difficult to exploit due to the large amounts of ice and permafrost in the way. But the planet is getting warmer. A vision of American public policy that is neither interested in halting the warming process nor concerned about the environmental impact of exploring the resources would naturally want to acquire such a potentially rich land… [This is] an example of how many wealthy and powerful people see climate change more as an opportunity for profit than a problem to solve.”
Matthew Yglesias, Vox

“Greenland is home to 56,000 people, and the notion of buying an indigenous people and their ancestral lands smacks of colonialism and is deeply problematic. Given how Trump’s real estate projects worked out for the islanders of New York City — $360 million in forgiven or uncollected taxes with another $885 million in tax breaks going to luxury apartments, hotels and office buildings — it would be financially savvy for Denmark to steer clear of President Trump’s crony capitalism.”
Mikkel Rosengaard, CNN

Many note that “private land ownership does not exist in Greenland… In 2017, a sheep farmer in southern Greenland told me how he had recently built a new pasture: After deciding that he wanted to expand, he told the local kommune, which posted a sign advertising the change publicly. When no one protested, he went ahead and did it. And forget opposing Medicare for All: In Greenland, the entire health-care industry is nationalized. Both medical care and prescription drugs are free… President Trump will have to commit to supporting all those programs if he hopes to add Greenland to the union. And so the United States will gain a state quite unlike any it has had before: a state where landed property is illegal, where private medical care is banned, and where most major industries are state-owned.”
Robinson Meyer, The Atlantic

“Greenland, of course, won’t be sold to the U.S. On the one hand, Denmark has no reason to sell it. It’s a wealthy country that runs a budget surplus. It can easily afford the annual subsidy of about $500 million that it pays to Greenland, and it sees itself as the island’s sensible steward rather than the unwilling owner of a vast, largely uninhabited territory. Besides, the 56,000 Greenlanders likely wouldn’t want to switch their allegiance… To protect U.S. interests in the Arctic, Trump would be better off working closely and constructively with European allies, including Denmark and Norway. Such cooperation can make more economic sense than territorial expansion.”
Leonid Bershidsky, Bloomberg From the Right The right is supportive of the idea, but acknowledges that it is unlikely to happen. “The suggestion shows constructive, creative thinking, and it’s an intriguing idea… While there is absolutely no sign that Denmark or the mostly autonomous Greenlanders themselves would be interested in becoming part of the U.S., it does make a certain sense for them. Greenland holds no military value for a nation as small as Denmark, which has no need to worry itself with ‘force projection’ the way the U.S. does. And while the natural resources could be as valuable to Denmark as they would be to the U.S., Denmark right now spends nearly $600 million annually in subsidies to Greenland’s government. Ridding itself of those costs, plus getting a big lump-sump payment from its American allies to boot, could be a good deal for the Danes.”
Quin Hillyer, Washington Examiner

“If it is true, it would be the mother of all deals for the deal maker. There are tens of billions of dollars in mineral wealth in Greenland that we currently can’t exploit because of the remoteness of the deposits and the difficulty of extracting the wealth in the subzero temperatures. But ten years from now, any amount paid for Greenland might be seen as a bargain.”
Rick Moran, PJ Media

“Through the U.S. Air Force base already present at Thule, Greenland offers critical intelligence capabilities to conduct satellite operations and to detect possible over-the-North-Pole nuclear missile launches from China or Russia. Thule better allows the U.S. to warn its citizens of an imminent attack. And it does more than that. Thanks to Thule’s deep water port and long runway, the base provides a logistics hub for operations in the Arctic. And it gives the U.S. military the means to deter and defeat prospective aggression…

The purchase of Greenland would further strengthen these existing national security benefits. Unbound from political sensitivities in Denmark, for example, the U.S. could station missile forces in Greenland, including intermediate range missile forces. Russia’s Arctic ambitions would have to be put on ice… But this isn’t just about American interests. Greenland’s small population also has everything to gain from a massive influx of American investment. The surge in tourism alone would surely offer a vast untapped potential.”
Editorial Board, Washington Examiner

“As it happens, in my spare time I’ve been taking in a Danish drama called ‘Borgen’ (the name for their primary government building)… one episode concerned Greenland and a pending visit to Denmark of the President of the United States! Denmark’s first woman prime minister (a moderate liberal and the star of the show) makes a visit to Greenland, where she hears a litany of complaints about how the mostly indigenous population of the icebound island is condescended to by Denmark, deprived of their autonomy, starved for adequate resources, etc. Hmmm. I suspect this plot line has a large element of truth to it. Denmark says it is not for sale, and it is not clear just who does have the sovereign right to decide the matter. Perhaps the inhabitants of Greenland might like to be acquired by the United States? Might be interesting to ask them.”
Steven Hayward, Power Line Blog

“The reason to want total dominion over Greenland is to gain the power to exclude: China is verrrry interested in the island as an Atlantic base that would put it on America’s (and Europe’s) doorstep. Denmark stepped in and blocked a Chinese attempt to buy an abandoned naval base there two years ago but Chinese mining interests in the country are expanding. If you want to keep the Chinese out, you’re stuck either relying on the unwavering loyalty of the governments of Denmark and Greenland as Beijing throws more money around — or, of course, acquiring the land yourself and telling the Chinese to beat it.”

Trump: ‘We already have a lot of background checks’

By ANNA PALMER and JAKE SHERMAN

08/19/2019 05:56 AM EDT

Presented by

DRIVING THE DAY

IF YOU ARE SOMEONE who is looking forward to Congress coming back into session and passing gun control, take a look at what President DONALD TRUMP said Sunday before leaving New Jersey.

QUESTION: “But you’re not willing to support universal background checks right now?”

TRUMP: “I’m not saying anything. I’m saying Congress is going to be reporting back to me with ideas. And they’ll come in from Democrats and Republicans. And I’ll look at it very strongly. But just remember, we already have a lot of background checks. OK? Thank you.”

— EARLIER IN THE GAGGLE, Trump said this: “They have bipartisan committees working on background checks and various other things. And we’ll see. I don’t want people to forget that this is a mental health problem. I don’t want them to forget that, because it is. It’s a mental health problem.”

JUST LIKE WE SAID: The president has trouble holding a position for more than a few days. This certainly seems like the president is backing away from background checks, and is settling into the old GOP position of bolstering mental health protections.

INSIDE THE PRESIDENT’S MIND …

— NYT’S MAGGIE HABERMAN’S WHITE HOUSE MEMO on A14: “In Economic Warning Signals, Trump Sees Signs of a Conspiracy”: “President Trump, confronting perhaps the most ominous economic signs of his time in office, has unleashed what is by now a familiar response: lashing out at what he believes is a conspiracy of forces arrayed against him.

“He has insisted that his own handpicked Federal Reserve chair, Jerome H. Powell, is intentionally acting against him. He has said other countries, including allies, are working to hurt American economic interests. And he has accused the news media of trying to create a recession.

“Mr. Trump has repeated the claims in private discussions with aides and allies, insisting that his critics are trying to take away what he sees as his calling card for re-election. Mr. Trump has been agitated in discussions of the economy, and by the news media’s reporting of warnings of a possible recession. He has said forces that do not want him to win have been overstating the damage his trade war has caused, according to people who have spoken with him. And several aides agree with him that the news media is overplaying the economic fears, adding to his feeling of being justified, people close to the president said.” NYT

WSJ’S NICK TIMIRAOS: “Fed Chief Wedged Between a Slowing Economy and an Angry President”: “Jerome Powell is entering the most perilous stage yet of his tenure as Federal Reserve chairman, fighting to keep the U.S. from recession while taking the blame from President Trump for skittish markets and a slowing economy.

“Mr. Trump’s unyielding criticism of the Fed has led people inside the central bank to feel like they are fighting to both buoy the U.S. economy and preserve the Fed’s independence from political interference.

“After cutting short-term interest rates in July, Mr. Powell is navigating the Fed toward more rate reductions, though conditions could change. The debate among his Fed colleagues is how much to move rates and when as well as how to best frame the decision, which will be scrutinized by markets and the White House.” WSJ

“‘He leveraged his position as a prominent journalist to prey on women. “Maya Sialuk practices traditional Inuit tattooing, an ancient art her ancestors used to ward off illness and seek good fortune when hunting and fishing. She described the idea of the U.S. buying Greenland as insensitive and rude. ‘We are still trying to recover from a colonization period of almost 300 years,’ she said. ‘Then there is this white dude in the States who’s talking about purchasing us.’ …

“Múte Bourup Egede, leader of the left-wing, pro-independence Inuit Ataqatigiit party in Greenland’s parliament, said such strategic games—and Mr. Trump’s icebound fantasy—serve to remind Greenlanders of their country’s outsize importance in world affairs. ‘America will always have an interest in Greenland,’ said Mr. Egede, cradling a Bernie Sanders 2016 coffee mug. ‘Our country will always be ours.’” WSJ

“But the intimate relationship between the wealthy California investor and the president has fractured so badly that the two no longer speak, current and former White House officials say.

She was 76. …

“During her first 20 months as governor, Blanco was a popular, can-do governor who was pro-business, pro-life, pro-guns and focused on improving the state’s education system. The New York Times Embraces a Neo-Confederate World View For Its 1619 Project There is real racism in the United States.  It is objectively true that white supremacists have been emboldened these last few years and it is objectively true that President Trump’s rhetoric has played a part even if he has not intended it to.  In my opinion, his rhetoric often plays a part because of how the media twists his words and mischaracterizes them, i.e. his references to criminals crossing the border did not apply to all Mexicans; his reference to “animals” applied only to MS-13 murderers; and other examples.

It is also objectively true that many of the President’s critics behave in ways they claim only he behaves and it is objectively true there are plenty of people on the left who benefit by continually stoking racial tensions in the United States.

It is also objectively true that slavery was this nation’s original sin. But it is also true that hundreds of thousands of people spilled their blood on the Union Army side as propitiation for that sin.

Into this wades the New York Times with its 1619 Project. It is a worthwhile endeavor designed to educate Americans about slavery and the role it has played in the new world. Unfortunately, the New York Times is ill prepared to do it justice in large part by handing it over to a group of opinion writers who profit from stoking and fueling racial grievances. To understand the 1619 Project, you really need to read this transcript of a meeting of writers at the New York Times.

The inmates have taken over the asylum and those inmates are re-writing American history to make everything about race, racism, and slavery.

At the outset, I should note there are some worthwhile reads. But the paper starts out with this… Read More…

This Is #FakeNews: Workers Weren’t Paid If They Refused to See Trump Speech CNN has a story up on their website headlined “Workers had 3 options: Attend Trump’s speech, use paid time off or receive no pay.” The first paragraph reads:

Workers at the Pennsylvania petrochemical plant where President Donald Trump spoke Tuesday were told that if they didn’t attend the event, they either had to use paid time off or receive no pay for the day.
This headline and lede are at best misleading, and at worst, designed to feed the rage machine. I tend to believe the worst, myself.

Let’s unpack this like the Babylon Bee correcting Snopes, shall we? Read More…
New Group Aims to Educate American Youth On Socialism’s Deadly Footprint A newly-formed group wants to tackle socialism and its stronghold on America’s youth today. Young Americans Against Socialism (YAAS) launched yesterday, August 15th, to educate people about the ills of socialism through “creating viral educational videos for social media.”  The group wants to use social media to directly reach the 50% of millennials who have a favorable view of socialism. That’s an ambitious, yet challenging goal—but an endeavor worth pursuing.  The 501 (c)(3) organization is headed up by Morgan Zegers, a 22-year-old New York native and past Republican candidate for New York State Assembly. Zegers also ran Zegers Family Flags with her family before moving to Boston, Massachusetts, earlier this year.  CNN profiled her bid for office and said of her, “She’s 21, Republican and a woodworking pro.” VICE News also featured Zegers as part of their “She’s Running” docu-series.    Read More… Democrats’ Racial Incitements Threaten Philadelphia Police, Not The 2nd Amendment Philadelphia police attempting to execute a narcotics warrant in a “troubled” neighborhood yesterday got a surprise when a felon with a 12-page rap sheet, including a lengthy prison sentence for federal weapons charges, opened fire.  Six officers were wounded.   Warning Signs for Republicans President Trump has backed off tariffs on toys made in China. His Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, said the administration did not want to hurt Christmas. This is an admission against interest that the trade war with China is hurting the American people.

Last week, the yield curve inverted. Normally, the yields, or interest rate, on long term bonds are better than the short term bond yields. The government is now having to pay higher rates on 2 year bonds than on 10 year bonds because investors are losing confidence in the short term economy. This “inverted yield curve” has happened before every recession in the past 50 years.

Janet Yellin, the former chair of the Federal Reserve, said she thinks the economy is strong, but she is troubled by this development. The President blames the current head of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, for having raised interest rates only to lower them. The problem for the President is that no one elected Powell. President Trump appointed Powell. The President claimed he only hires the best people and now blames his own appointee. If the President does not do something positive for the economy, already agitated voters may revolt.

Unfortunately, there may be little the President can do. China is happy to wreck its economy to hurt President Trump. Read More… Remember, as always, to go check out The Resurgent and be sure to like us on Facebook.

President Trump is scrambling to refute criticism about his stewardship of the economy as the rising odds of a recession pose a dire threat to his reelection.   Trump and his top economic aides are on the defensive this week after signals of an impending downturn sent financial markets into shivers last week.   “I don’t think we’re having a recession,” Trump told reporters on Sunday as he returned to Washington after a 10-day break in New Jersey. “We’re doing tremendously well. Our consumers are rich. I gave a tremendous tax cut and they’re loaded up with money.”   The president also tweeted his confidence that sky-is-falling economic predictions are wrong. But he has been nervous enough to privately consult with bank CEOs and market watchers by phone to get their input.   “Our economy is the best in the world, by far,” the president wrote shortly before ending his New Jersey vacation on Sunday and returning to Washington. “Lowest unemployment ever within almost all categories. Poised for big growth after trade deals are completed. Import prices down, China eating Tariffs. Helping targeted Farmers from big Tariff money coming in. Great future for USA!”   Trump has publicly refuted the idea that his tariffs on imports from China raised prices for American consumers, ate away at U.S. farmers’ market share and injected costly uncertainty into U.S. businesses, which were forced to improvise to alter their supply chains. Instead, the president blames Federal Reserve monetary policy, Democrats in Congress and the news media for talk of a recession (The Hill).     While Trump is not responsible for slowing global growth, economists say his trade battles with China and Europe have taken an unmistakable toll. Consumer spending remains the engine of U.S. expansion, and the president was sufficiently anxious about the make-or-break holiday shopping season that he put a hold on additional tariffs on Chinese goods through Dec. 15.   As Niall Stanage reports, the president tells voters again and again that it’s the Trump economy that makes him worthy of a second term. If the U.S. economy contracts, unemployment rises or financial markets nosedive next year, the president’s grip on the White House severely weakens (The Hill).       The Associated Press reported that Trump, susceptible to conspiracy theories and quick to see himself at the center of things, has expressed worries in private about Wall Street but is skeptical about some economic indicators, wondering if the media and establishment figures are manipulating the data to make him look bad, according to two Republicans close to the White House.   The U.S. manufacturing sector, which has a starring role in Trump’s narrative about “America First” economic renewal, is contracting, reports Niv Elis. The sector has already seen two straight quarters of decline, meeting the technical definition of a recession. In 2016, Trump persuaded voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan, as well as other industrial states, that shuttered plants would reopen, return to the United States from Mexico and Asia, with jobs and wages in manufacturing recovering in the process. In a world of global competition, robotics, new technologies and cheap international labor, that is not the manufacturing story of 2019 (The Hill).   The New York Times: Is a new recession imminent? Here’s how one could happen.   The Washington Post: American consumers are holding up the global economy, but for how long?   The Associated Press: Economists survey: 34% expect a U.S. recession in 2021.   The Hill: White House national economic adviser Larry Kudlow offers reassurances amid recession fears.   The Hill: Trump faces crucial decisions on economy, guns.   More administration news … Both The New York Times and The Washington Post published Sunday features about Trump’s hardline immigration adviser, Stephen Miller. … The New York Times reports an exodus of migrants from Central America is being driven by violence against women, at the same time that the United States seeks to deny those women asylum.

LEADING THE DAY
POLITICS & CAMPAIGNS: Democratic presidential candidates have found a reliable line of attack in targeting the president throughout this calendar year: criticizing his handling of racially divisive and violent incidents, headlined by those in Charlottesville, Va., and El Paso, Texas.    As Brett Samuels writes, candidates have grown increasingly comfortable labeling Trump a racist or a white supremacist, pointing to his equivocations in the aftermath of the August 2017 Charlottesville white nationalist rally and the similarities between the anti-immigrant manifesto of the alleged El Paso gunman and Trump’s own rhetoric.    “[Trump] has given aid and comfort to white supremacists. He’s done the wink and a nod,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) told The New York Times just days after the El Paso shooting that killed 22 people, exhibiting a willingness on the Democratic side to use those terms.    Trump’s reelection campaign believes the allegations against the president reeks of desperation from the group of candidates vying to take on Trump next year.
“For two years, Democrats called President Trump a Russian agent, and now that the Russia Hoax has fallen apart, they’ve moved on to white supremacy,” Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said.   Dan Balz: Trump has one playbook, and very few plays left in it.   The Washington Post: Former Vice President Dick Cheney to appear at a fundraiser for Trump, RNC.   > Democrats after Cornyn: A slew of Democrats are lining up to challenge Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) in 2020, showcasing the party’s optimism of flipping a Senate seat in the historically red state despite former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s (D-Texas) decision to forego a second consecutive Senate bid.    O’Rourke’s decision to run for the Democratic presidential nod has sparked intense interest in the race to face Cornyn: Seven Democrats have entered the primary, and one more could join in a state that has not elected a Democratic senator in more than three decades. Headlining the field is MJ Hegar, a military veteran who narrowly lost a House race last year, and Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards.    Democrats are optimistic they can take out Cornyn, who has served in the Senate for nearly two decades after O’Rourke nearly defeated Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) last year. Strategists believe the primary field will present a formidable challenger to Cornyn due to its racial, age, and ideological diversity. However, Republicans view the large primary field as an advantage, arguing a contentious primary could bruise the eventual candidate and use up money ahead of the general election (The Hill).   Politico: Michigan emerges as crucial battleground in fight for the Senate.   The Hill: Republicans plot comeback in New Jersey.
© Getty Images     > Polling: Anxiety is growing among politicos as they try to figure out the Democratic primary and, more specifically, polling that has shown a consistent top tier and a lack of moving and shaking among the rest of the candidates.    Surveys consistently show five candidates clear from the rest of the field, with former Vice President Joe Biden leading, followed by Warren, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in some order and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg rounding out the top five.    However, wild variations in the polls in recent days have experts questioning who is up and down, and whether the polls can be trusted as an accurate indicator of the state of the race, as many questioned them in the aftermath of the 2016 election.    Pollsters say the huge field of candidates is a challenge for the industry, which is also dealing with the continued migration away from landlines toward cell phones and online surveys, which some view as unreliable. Pollsters warn that current surveys shouldn’t be taken as a predictor of who will win (The Hill).   The New York Times: Julián Castro’s Obama moment.   More political headlinesTrump affirmed in remarks to reporters on Sunday that Mike Pence will be his running mate in 2020 (Reuters). There had been some speculation that former ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley would be a candidate to replace Pence on the ticket (CNN). … Former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D) died on Sunday at age 76 (The Associated Press).

IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKES
CONGRESS: House Judiciary Committee members are cutting their August recess short and are expected to meet to discuss possible action on gun control legislation weeks in the wake of mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio.   The committee is expected to ready a set of bills for consideration in the House when all lawmakers return to Washington on September 9. The legislation will include a high-capacity magazine ban, a measure to prevent people convicted of misdemeanor hate crimes from purchasing firearms and a “red flag” bill to deny guns to those deemed to be a danger to themselves and others (Reuters).    A September 25 hearing on assault weapons is also on the docket for the committee as Democrats up their calls for those bills to be banned (The Hill).    > Cursing in Congress: Profanity — once considered a major no-no among those seeking public office — is now no longer considered an earth-shattering political snafu as it becomes a regular happening among lawmakers.    According to new research by GovPredict, obscene language not including the words “shit” and “f—” has been used at an all-time high by politicians, with 1,225 instances on Twitter so far this year compared to 833 in 2018. GovPredict CEO Emil Pitkin says that the information “shows a stark uptick in the overall usage of curse words by legislators on Twitter” (The Hill).   In a highly-publicized instance in the aftermath of the mass shooting in El Paso, O’Rourke let loose while speaking to reporters, dropping an F-bomb while expressing frustration with the president the news media.    “He’s been calling Mexican immigrants rapists and criminals. Members of the press, what the f—?” said O’Rourke, who also dropped a “Jesus Christ” during a Sunday show interview.    > Twitter confusion: Sharing a name with a lawmaker can be a tricky business, particularly when the lawmaker in question is Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa).    Steve King, a politics editor at Under the Radar magazine, often doesn’t know immediately what the Iowa Republican says when he draws attention online, but he knows exactly when he says it as notifications begin to flood in from his Twitter account.    “Sometimes I’ll be going about my day and you’ll start to get notifications,” King said. Like others with the same name as a public figure, King will often accidentally be targeted as online critics take to Twitter to call out politicians or debate the day’s latest controversy (The Hill).    *** INTERNATIONAL: Balking at experts’ projections of a global economic downturn, the Trump administration over the weekend continued to push for a trade accord with China. Officials from both countries will confer again within 10 days, and if progress is not evident, the Trump team will invite counterparts from Beijing to travel back to the United States, White House adviser Kudlow said (Reuters). Trump on Sunday declined to say if he spoke with President Xi Jinping of China. Reports said the two leaders had not spoken over the weekend.    > Hong Kong: Pro-democracy demonstrations continued peacefully on Sunday in heavy rain (Reuters).
© Getty Images     > Afghanistan: At a time when Trump has been looking for a way to withdraw U.S. troops from Afghanistan after 18 years of war, Afghans have expressed suspicions about a proposed peace deal between the United States and the Taliban (The Washington Post). Separately, Trump said on Sunday that peace talks are in flux. “We’ll see what happens. We’ve really got it down to probably 13,000 people [U.S. troops], and we’ll be bringing it down a little bit more, and then we’ll decide” whether to stay, he told reporters. Meanwhile, Islamic State fighters claimed credit on Sunday for a grisly suicide bombing at an Afghan wedding reception that killed 63 people (Reuters).  Afghan President Ashraf Ghani promised on Monday to “eliminate” all of the caliphate’s safe havens (The Associated Press).   > Russia: French President Emmanuel Macron today hosts Russian President Vladimir Putin in southern France ahead of the Group of Seven summit this month. Macron wants to talk to Putin about Ukraine and is attempting to show Russia it is not entirely ostracized from the club of leading industrialized nations (Reuters). … In Moscow, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Sunday that Russia will not deploy new missiles as long as the United States shows similar restraint in Europe and Asia. He was speaking in the wake of the Trump administration’s recent withdrawal from a Soviet-era nuclear arms pact that the White House accused Russia of violating (Reuters).   > United Kingdom-Brexit: British officials on Sunday refuted a report published by The Sunday Times drawn from leaked official documents that predicted Britain would face shortages of fuel, food and medicine if it exits the European Union without a transition deal at the end of October (Reuters).

State Watch: Illinois serves as a sobering example of why many states aren’t ready to secure their voting systems in 2020. Illinois is spending millions of dollars to safeguard its system, but it might not be enough as the number of nations committing data breaches multiplies (Bloomberg Businessweek). …State tax revenues from marijuana sales are a challenge to size up, let alone forecast, according to a new study released today by the Pew Charitable Trusts. State governments across the country are pulling in millions of dollars from taxes on legalized marijuana, but the revenue fluctuates wildly as new markets for a once-illegal product struggle to become established, Reid Wilson reports.   ➔ Health care: Women’s access to birth control and reproductive health care nationwide could be drastically impacted by Planned Parenthood’s exit today from the federal government’s family planning program, which under the Trump administration restricts funding for abortion. Women in rural states such as Utah, Minnesota and Vermont may have difficulty locating reproductive care, whether or not they seek to terminate pregnancies, under the effects of Trump administration rule changes (The Hill) … U.S. fertility clinics are struggling with a growing number of abandoned embryos and the question of what to do with them (NBC News).   ➔ News media: In an increasingly partisan and siloed news environment, and with Trump and other leaders stoking distrust in the media, “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace has earned a reputation as a tough but fair interviewer and debate moderator who has extracted provocative information and responses from world leaders and politicians. “People come up to me at airports or restaurants or whenever I’m out in public and praise me a lot for being fair,” Wallace, 71, said in an interview with Brett Samuels. “While on the one hand I appreciate it, on the other hand it kind of depresses me, because when I started out in the business, being fair was the baseline — that you tried to be as fair, as objective, as even-handed as you could be” (The Hill).

A Sea of Democracy
Over the weekend, almost two million protestors took to the streets in heavy rain in response to the police not allowing a march and their treatment of protestors earlier in the week. Yahoo News reports:

“Anger has been sharpened among protesters by the perceived heavy-handedness of the police, who have used tear gas, baton charges and rubber bullets in incidents that have gained wide attention on social media. “The police are doing things that are totally unacceptable,” said Yim, a protester who like many others gave only one name. “They are hurting citizens. They aren’t protecting us.” Communist Party-ruled mainland China has sharpened its tone towards the protesters, decrying the “terrorist-like” actions of a violent minority.”

On Sunday afternoon before heading back to DC, President Trump was asked about the protests and negotiations with China. He said, “I think it would be much harder for me to sign a deal if [President Xi] did something violent in Hong Kong.” He also encouraged Xi to meet with leaders of the protests.

The Investigation of the Investigation Continues
There are currently three investigations into the Department of Justice’s investigation into Russia and the 2016 presidential election. In an interview on Fox News, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-SC) referenced “three investigations of the investigators that are taking place: one by his committee; one by Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham, who was appointed by Attorney General Bill Barr to conduct a probe; and one by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz.” In the interview, Graham said “I believe the Horowitz report will be ugly and damning.” He went on to say, “I want it all out, I want people to see how off the rails this investigation got, and I want people to be held accountable, and I am patient. I’m not in a hurry to do it, I want to do it right.”

What To Do With Your Summer Fruit
I’m starting to see posts about the first day of school pop-up on social media. This means one thing — we’re getting close to the end of summer and it’s time to start binging on summer fruit. A friend once said to me that except for the A section, the New York Times is a fantastic paper. In this case, I agree because of their recent article “What to Do With All That Summer Fruit.” The article says, “August is summer, defeated.” The author writes: “Fortunately, I have developed coping mechanisms for countering this anxiety, and at the top of that list is buying summer fruit. All of the summer fruit. Possibly too much of the summer fruit. Watching me at a farmers’ market from Aug. 1 to 31 is like watching a contestant on “Supermarket Sweep,” a wild woman whirling through the stands, fueled by her fear of impending scarcity. I can’t know peace until I have grabbed every last basket of berries, filled several paper bags with peaches, nectarines, apricots, plums, apriums and plumcots, and plopped more melons than one person should reasonably be allowed to carry on the subway into totes.”

Here are some of my favorite recipes:

Salted Apricot-Honey Cobbler (New York Times)

Strawberry Balsamic Jam (BrokeAss Gourmet)

Brown Sugar Peach Crumble Pie (Sally’s Baking Addiction)

Watermelon Gazpacho with Feta Cream (Epicurious)

What I’m Reading This Week
Over the weekend I started the latest from Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell, Is There Still Sex in the City? The funny thing is that it was the negative reviews that made me want to read this book. A majority of the negative reviews were from women who were expecting the TV series (which Bushnell didn’t write) and were surprised that instead the book was about what happens when you “date like men” and then end up alone at 60. There’s no Carrie Bradshaw, just some hard truths from Bushnell on dating and loneliness as you get older. It is a funny book so far despite the hard truths. From the description: “Drawing from her own experience, in Is There Still Sex in the City? Bushnell spins a smart, lively satirical story of love and life from all angles―marriage and children, divorce and bereavement, as well as the very real pressures on women to maintain their youth and have it all. This is an indispensable companion to one of the most revolutionary dating books of the twentieth century from one of our most important social commentators.”

It’s been awhile since we’ve seen a post on the First Lady’s fashion. This weekend we got a glimpse when she, along with son, Barron, and the President, boarded Air Force One in New Jersey on their way back to DC. Footwear News reported that she was wearing a pair of Louboutins that seem to be her go-to for pulling together a look of classic pieces. She previously wore them a Christmas event and National Prayer Day. The floral mosaic So Kate stilettos are, of course, sold out.

For shoe inspiration, check out these floral heels from Nordstrom (including a few Louboutins to ogle), these from Zappos, or this more comfortable wedge with a similar print

Buying Greenland is the type of thinking that helped Trump win in the first place Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:39 AM PDT I’ll keep this very short, barely more than a Tweet. We’re not going to buy Greenland. It’s not that we wouldn’t, but Denmark is unwilling to part with the largest island in the world for some reason. Nevermind that the 56,000 inhabitants of Greenland aren’t happy with Copenhagen even if they’re semi-autonomous. Denmark has said they […] The post Buying Greenland is the type of thinking that helped Trump win in the first place appeared first on Conservative Christian News.
Can Lacy Johnson beat Ilhan Omar in Minneapolis? Posted: 19 Aug 2019 05:05 AM PDT Minneapolis is one of the bluest major cities in America. The race for the Democratic nomination for the MN-5 district is essentially the general election because Democrats have held the seat belonging to Minneapolis since 1963. The closest a Republican has come to winning the district in this century was Alan Fine in 2006 who […] The post Can Lacy Johnson beat Ilhan Omar in Minneapolis? appeared first on Conservative Christian News.
Why Bernie Sanders failed so hard this time Posted: 19 Aug 2019 01:20 AM PDT Elizabeth Warren is the new Bernie Sanders. Mark it down. Sanders will be out of the race before the Iowa caucus even though he won it in 2016. Why? Because he was replaced by a younger, sleeker model. But there’s much more to the story of the Sanders 2020 failure than just another radical progressive […] The post Why Bernie Sanders failed so hard this time appeared first on Conservative Christian News.
‘Godfather’ star Gianni Russo on Chris ‘Fredo’ Cuomo’s rant Posted: 18 Aug 2019 10:22 PM PDT When CNN anchor Chris Cuomo was filmed delivering an unhinged rant to a heckler at a restaurant, one of the things many people took offense to was his declaration that the term “Fredo” was to Italian-Americans as the “n-word” is to African-Americans. This has been completely debunked since then with guests on his own show […] The post ‘Godfather’ star Gianni Russo on Chris ‘Fredo’ Cuomo’s rant appeared first on Conservative Christian News.
Why isn’t gun control considered to be sexist as well as racist? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:44 PM PDT Liberty [Gun] Control is rooted in racism. It also adversely affects women. Why isn’t it considered to be racist and sexist? A recent video from One America News Network entitled: ‘Gun Rights Are Women’s Rights’ made this very important point on the topic of Liberty Control. Do Omar, Tlaib oppose LGBTQ rights like the Palestinian Authority? Posted: 18 Aug 2019 09:03 PM PDT Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib want Israel to be boycotted, divested, and sanctioned. Joe Biden echoes false progressive claim that ballot box is ‘out of reach’ Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:50 PM PDT In rural areas of the country, voter groups send mail and emails to help people in remote areas know their options for voting. If you support the President, help him see gun control won’t work Posted: 18 Aug 2019 05:25 PM PDT Some say the President and GOP will lose the 2020 election if they don’t do something to slow down gun violence. Others say the President and GOP will lose if the embrace gun control. To some extent, both are right, but for very different reasons. If they do nothing that reduces gun violence, they’ll lose. FIRST READ: The good, the bad and the ugly for Trump in the new NBC/WSJ poll

The latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll contains good, bad and ugly numbers for President Trump.

The good: Despite his overall job-approval rating at 43 percent, Trump’s approval rating in handling the economy is much higher – at 49 percent approve, 46 percent disapprove. (The poll was conducted mostly before Wednesday’s 800-point drop in the Dow.)

The bad: The sliver of Americans who approve of Trump’s job handling – but who disapprove of his overall job performance – aren’t potential Trump voters in 2020. In fact, they back a generic Democrat over Trump, 73 percent to 5 percent.

The ugly: Only 36 percent of Americans say they approve of Trump’s handling of the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings that killed more than 30 people.

And those numbers are consistent with perceptions of Trump’s handling of other tragedies and scares, per the NBC/WSJ poll.

  • The pipe-bomb packages sent to prominent Democrats and reporters: 39 percent
  • The Pittsburgh synagogue shooting: 37 percent
  • Hurricane Maria that hit Puerto Rico: 29 percent
  • Charlottesville: 20 percent

By contrast, here’s the approval for other presidents’ handling of tragedies:

  • George W. Bush after 9/11: 87 percent
  • Bill Clinton after the Oklahoma City bombing: 84 percent
  • Barack Obama after the Tucson shooting: 74 percent

Even on Hurricane Katrina, Americans were split 48 percent to 48 percent on Bush’s handling of that tragedy back then.

“Americans typically rally around their president in times of national tumult and tragedy,” says Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt, whose firm co-conducted the NBC/WSJ survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

“Yet again in his response to the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, we see that Americans view Donald Trump and his reactions to national tragedies far differently.”

Unpopularity contest

Despite those pretty grim numbers for Trump, there’s some additional good news for the president when it comes to 2020: The top Democrats vying to take on the president are more unpopular than they were in 2017-2018.

(Which is probably to be expected when one enters the fray of a presidential contest.)

Joe Biden has seen his popularity among all adults come down to earth – from 54 percent positive, 22 percent negative in January 2018 (+32), to 34 percent positive, 38 percent negative now (-4).

Opinions of Bernie Sanders also have dropped – from 44 percent positive, 30 percent negative in 2017 (+14), to 37 percent positive, 40 percent negative now (-3).

And Elizabeth Warren stands at 31 percent positive, 32 percent negative (-1) – down from 30 percent positive, 28 percent negative in 2018 (+2).

“A year from now, both remaining candidates will have a net-negative favorable rating,” GOP pollster McInturff predicted about the possible/likely general election.

That said, Trump is more unpopular than either of those three Democrats – at 39 percent positive, 53 percent negative (-14).

2020 VISION: O’Rourke, Sanford appear on “Meet the Press”

Here was Beto O’Rourke on “Meet the Press” yesterday:

“You know, from the outset of this campaign, even before this campaign, I talked about how dangerous President Trump’s open racism is, the Mexicans as rapists and criminals, the Muslims, who should be banned from this country…

But it wasn’t until someone, inspired by Donald Trump, drove more than 600 miles, to my hometown, and killed 22 people in my community with a weapon of war, an AK-47, that he had no business owning, that no American should own, unless they are on a battlefield, engaged with the enemy. It wasn’t until that moment that I truly understood how critical this moment is and the real consequence and cost of Donald Trump.”

And here was Republican Mark Sanford, who’s mulling a primary challenge against Trump:

TODD: Does [Trump] deserve re-election?

SANFORD: I would say, no. Because I would argue that he’s taking us in the wrong direction. Just take one indicator. If you look at the business investment numbers over the last couple of months, they’ve been cratering. That’s reality. And in part, the reason they’re cratering is nobody knows what’s going to come next, in terms of trade.

On the campaign trail today:  Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Steve Bullock (via video) participate in a Native American presidential forum in Sioux City, Iowa… Bernie Sanders is also in the Hawkeye State, holding a town hall in Davenport and playing a baseball game against the press at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville… Elizabeth Warren holds a town hall in St. Paul, Minn…. And Kirsten Gillibrand participates in an interview with the Washington Post.

Dispatches from NBC’s embeds: Seven presidential candidates (Delaney, Bennet, Klobuchar, Castro, Yang, de Blasio and Moulton) spoke at the Hillsborough County Democrats picnic in New Hampshire on Sunday. NBC’s Amanda Golden has the highlights:

  • Castro, by far, got the loudest applause out of all of the candidates, and was the only one to receive a standing ovation when he delivered a passionate call for reforming the immigration system and restoring decency in the White House
  • De Blasio and Yang once again crossed paths while taking turns to speak – Yang was taking some pictures with attendees after concluding his speaking time and de Blasio was about to go up, and they exchanged a quick hug and a pat on the back for one another
  • Moulton did not rule out running for other office when asked by NBC News if his candidacy for the presidency doesn’t pan out

Beto O’Rourke visited Fayetteville, Arkansas where he compared President Trump’s rhetoric to Nazi Germany.

NBC’s Marianna Sotomayor reports: “O’Rourke quickly began to slam President Donald Trump’s inhumane rhetoric, saying that he would only expect human beings to be described as ‘an infestation in the Third Reich,’ he said. ‘Not in America.’ He called on everyone to wake up and recognize that Trump’s divisive leadership ‘is not an act of God,’ it’s something that the country can change.”

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 55 percent.

Fifty-five percent.

That’s the share of Americans in the new NBC/WSJ poll who say they’re “very worried” that the United States will experience another mass shooting or attack by white nationalists, targeting people based on their color or country of origin.

By comparison, just 27 percent say they’re very worried the U.S. will experience another major terrorist attack, according to the same poll.

In the January 2002 NBC/WSJ poll – so just months removed from the 9/11 terrorist attacks – 30 percent said they were very worried about another terrorist attack.

TWEET OF THE DAY: The pessimistas were right

Asked about that 2007 quote on “Meet” yesterday, Kudlow pleaded guilty to that incorrect forecast, but he did say he did “go to the recession call” by February/March 2008.

08/19/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Fanning Flames; Snopes and Satire; Reagan-Ford By Carl M. Cannon on Aug 19, 2019 09:33 am
Good morning, it’s Monday, Aug. 19, 2019. Bill Clinton turns 73 today. That’s right, the “Comeback Kid” is no kid anymore. Neither is George W. Bush, also born in the summer of 1946. Nor Donald Trump, who arrived in mid-June that year. All three of these U.S. presidents were in the first crop of the Baby Boom generation. Hillary Clinton, who turns 72 in October, was a little more than a year behind them. These four were born in New York City; New Haven, Conn.; Hope, Ark., and Chicago, Ill., and whatever hopes and dreams their families had for them as they entered the world, they will be forever linked. History is interesting that way. Forty-three years ago today, another political quartet took the stage at the Republican National Convention in Kansas City. President Gerald R. Ford stood at the podium flanked by his vice president (Nelson Rockefeller), his vice presidential nominee, (Bob Dole), and the man who tried to wrest the GOP nomination from him (Ronald Reagan). Graciously introducing Reagan as his “good friend,” which wasn’t a completely candid testimonial, Ford then did something remarkable: He turned the lectern over to this rival not knowing what Reagan might say. The delegates were jazzed. They’d been engaged in hand-to-hand combat at that convention, not only for the presidential nomination and No. 2 slot, but for the very direction of the Republican Party. In the previous few days, they’d been swept up in the drama of a possible Ford-Reagan “Dream Ticket.” But that wasn’t to be, and now four members of the Greatest Generation stood before them in Kemper Arena trying to focus on the general election ahead. “We Republicans have had some tough competition — we not only preach the virtues of competition, we practice them,” Ford said. “Let me say this from the bottom of my heart: After the scrimmages of the past few months, it really feels good to have Ron Reagan on the same side of the line.” With that, the unelected president brought Ronald and Nancy Reagan on stage. What happened next was even more remarkable, as I’ll discuss in a moment. First, I’d steer you to  RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Stoking Racial Division? MSNBC Does the Dems’ Work. Frank Miele takes issue with comments by Kasie Hunt last week on “MTP Daily.” Administration Aims to Cut Funds for Foreign Border Security. Phil Wegmann reports on plans to trim $4 billion from USAID and the State Department budgets. Snopes Fact-Checkers Finally Label Satire — Sort Of. Bill Zeiser updates policy changes made since the Babylon Bee controversy. Economic Growth Isn’t Dependent on Other Nations Weakening. In RealClearMarkets, Allan Golombek explains that China and the United States are not just each other’s competitors — they are each other’s customers and suppliers.  * * * As he took the microphone on Aug. 19, 1976, Ronald Wilson Reagan had no written speech, no notes, no teleprompter. But the 65-year-old former play-by-play radio broadcaster, Hollywood leading man, and two-term California governor had something he wanted to impart. He got into it by telling the mesmerized delegates and a watching nation that he’d been asked to pen a letter for a time capsule to be opened 100 years in the future on the occasion of the nation’s tricentennial. He said that he contemplated what to write while riding down the California coast in a car, gazing at the blue Pacific Ocean on one side and the rising Santa Ynez Mountains on the other. “I couldn’t help but wonder,” Reagan said, “if it was going to be that beautiful a hundred years from now as it was on that summer day.” While contemplating the challenges mankind would face in the ensuing century, Reagan focused on the dual threats facing the human race — but it wasn’t climate change or racism, the issues that preoccupy the current crop of presidential contenders. Reagan had two other perils on his mind: tyranny and the frightful weapons of war mankind had built with mayhem in mind. “We live in a world in which the great powers have poised and aimed at each other horrible missiles of destruction, nuclear weapons that can in a matter of minutes arrive at each other’s country and destroy, virtually, the civilized world we live in,” Reagan began. “Suddenly it dawned on me,” he said. “Those who would read this letter a hundred years from now will know whether those missiles were fired. They will know whether we met our challenge. Whether they have the freedoms that we have known up until now will depend on what we do here.” In a speech you can watch today, Reagan continued: “Will they look back with appreciation and say, ‘Thank God for those people in 1976 who headed off that loss of freedom, who kept us now 100 years later free, who kept our world from nuclear destruction’? If we failed, they probably won’t get to read the letter at all because it spoke of individual freedom, and they won’t be allowed to talk of that or read of it.” Four years later, in Detroit, the Republican Party would again go through the exercise of weighing a possible Dream Ticket, this time with Reagan as the leading man. (These fascinating historical chapters are captured most thoroughly by Craig Shirley in his book about the 1976 election and its sequel about the 1980 presidential campaign.) But when you are living through these events, you cannot know how they are going to turn out. Although Jerry Ford described Reagan as his “good friend” in 1976, those two men were mainly rivals in life. Yet over time, that description would accurately apply to the man who beat Ford in the 1976 general election and, in turn, was defeated by Reagan in 1980. Yes, Jerry Ford and Jimmy Carter would evolve into true friends, just as George W. Bush and Bill Clinton have become, in Dubya’s puckish telling, “brothers from another mother.” In addition, Ford’s voice remained with us longer than Reagan’s, which was stilled first by the fog of Alzheimer’s and then by death in 2004. I interviewed Ford the summer after Reagan left this mortal vale, and I mentioned as we discussed conventions past that a Reagan-Ford ticket would have been formidable. “Some people told us that a ticket with he and I on it would have been unbeatable,” Ford replied. “That’s probably right, but it was unbeatable the way it was. Any ticket with Reagan on it was pretty unbeatable.” So far, the current Democratic presidential field hasn’t taken shape in a way that reminds us of 1976, but things won’t remain the way they are now. Someone will emerge — and others will seize the stage before their time — meaning that we won’t really know what we’re seeing until later. As Gerald Ford’s gracious comment to me suggests, new insights will come later, even to those fighting in the arena.  Carl M. Cannon
