Friday, July 12, 2019 Jeffrey Epstein “Billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein was charged Monday with sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in a case brought more than a decade after he secretly cut a deal with federal prosecutors to dispose of nearly identical allegations.” AP News On Wednesday, Acosta defended his handling of the case in a press conference, “insisting he got the toughest deal he could at the time.” AP News Many on both sides condemn Secretary of Labor Alex Acosta’s handling of the 2005 case against Epstein: “Acosta has suggested that the charges against Epstein would have been difficult to prove. But this assertion was never plausible, and will likely become less so once the prosecution’s file becomes public and the new prosecution of Epstein, by the Trump Department of Justice, proceeds. Another of Acosta’s defenses is that he was not personally responsible for the ‘terms of Epstein’s incarceration.’ He may not be responsible for how cushy Epstein had it during his time served, but it was Acosta who negotiated the ridiculously short duration of the sentence.” Paul Mirengoff, Power Line Blog “It’s true that the public has a better understanding of the trauma of sexual abuse now than in 2008, in part because of the many people who have told their stories publicly as part of the #MeToo movement. But as CNN’s Kara Scannell has reported, Acosta’s office appears to have prosecuted other, less high-profile offenders than Epstein far more aggressively at around the same time, and obtained significant sentences for them that included prison time… No one is disputing that Jeffrey Epstein had extremely powerful lawyers who put pressure on victims and prosecutors alike. They were no doubt formidable adversaries. But it was part of Acosta’s job as US attorney to stand firm against formidable adversaries. In his press conference on Wednesday, Acosta did not make a compelling case that he did that where Epstein was concerned.” Anna North, Vox “Acosta had firsthand witnesses. God only knows how many girls have been victimized by Epstein since he finished serving the wrist-slap sentence Acosta arranged for him. And that’s not all. Reporter Vicky Ward, who’s been chasing this story for nearly 20 years, notes today at the Daily Beast that “federal prosecutors agreed to keep the [plea] deal secret from Epstein’s victims, which meant they would not know to challenge it in court. As it turned out, this actually broke the law, because victims have a right to know of such developments, under the Crime Victims’ Rights Act.’” Allahpundit, Hot Air “Pending further revelations, one thing is clear: Acosta should step down from his Cabinet position for dereliction of duty in his prior role — and because he has the spine of a mollusk. In deciding not to fully prosecute Epstein in 2007 — and then agreeing to bury the proceedings without advising the victims — he violated the law, betrayed the victims’ trust and displayed rare cowardice before justice.” Kathleen Parker, Washington Post Other opinions below. From the Left “The Epstein case is first and foremost about the casual victimization of vulnerable girls. But it is also a political scandal, if not a partisan one. It reveals a deep corruption among mostly male elites across parties, and the way the very rich can often purchase impunity for even the most loathsome of crimes.” Michelle Goldberg, New York Times “Our era is one of exploding and all but unpunished crime by the wealthy and connected… When most people get out of jail, they can barely get a job at a fast food joint. Not our man Epstein… “Celebrities were still turning up at Epstein-hosted parties even after he was released from jail. The NYPD seemingly waived requirements that Epstein, a convicted sex offender, report in on a regular basis — [a] kindness the department doesn’t extend to the nonwhite or non-wealthy. More than a few charities and nonprofits continued to line up at the trough for a chance at his money… the Jeffrey Epstein scandal is something, I predict, that will come to be viewed in future years as one of the defining events that brings our age of excess to a close.” Helaine Olen, Washington Post “It took a network of people putting their own personal, financial, and sexual interests over the safety and dignity of girls to keep Epstein’s alleged child-abuse operation running. It will take a network that’s just as substantial to uncover the extent of Epstein’s possible crimes. It’s perverse, but there’s a direct relationship between the magnitude of a system of abuse and the magnitude of the effort required to end it. The fact that so many people appear to have known about and participated in Epstein’s alleged child-trafficking enterprise has not been a liability for him; indeed, it has been his foremost strength.” Christina Cauterucci, Slate Regarding Acosta, “perhaps there was nothing [he], amid mounting criticism, could have said at Wednesday’s press conference to make things right. But the proper approach, obvious to many, was to show some contrition. He could have acknowledged his mistakes and apologized for them. He could have highlighted why others shouldn’t discount victims of sexual abuse in the future as he once did. He could have even resigned. Acosta chose another path. He gave an astonishingly Trumpian performance: admit no error, shift responsibility, and blame the media.” Matt Ford, New Republic “There’s no doubt that the judicial system must examine the accusations against Mr. Epstein, and that the Justice Department will have many questions about Mr. Acosta’s apparent leniency toward him. Congress digging into this case, however, is a poor use of lawmakers’ limited time and resources. More dangerous, in the midst of the Trump administration’s war on congressional oversight in general, such hearings carry a high risk of turning the Epstein case into a partisan battle — and Mr. Acosta into a political martyr around whom the president and his followers feel moved to rally… better to let the legal system and the court of public opinion carry this particular burden.” Editorial Board, New York Times “It is customary, when faced with the grotesque inequalities of the criminal-justice system, to decry the preferential treatment that people such as Jeffrey Epstein enjoy. Rather than complain that Epstein got too much justice, it would be far more productive to complain that most people get too little. Adequately funded criminal defense, bail reform, and other commonsense changes would do far more to improve the system than the prosecution of an occasional billionaire.” Ken White, The Atlantic From the Right “Perhaps the most historic, in the sense of era-defining, moment in the history of the Academy Awards was that standing ovation Roman Polanski got when he was given Best Director honors in 2003. There they are, leading Hollywood liberals, leaping to their feet to cheer for a man who, at age 43, gave a 13-year-old girl Quaaludes for the purpose of having sex with her and sodomizing her. Polanski suffered in no significant way for his crime… “The Jeffrey Epstein case should end a nearly 50-year era in which the mandarins of our cultures — the intellectuals, writers, and artists — almost unanimously ignored, laughed off, or even outright celebrated sexual exploitation of girls and very young women, even in many cases prepubescent ones… Epstein’s habits were so unremarkable that Bill Clinton and Donald Trump were happy to be associated with him. Clinton and Trump were not outliers. They were simply symptoms of a disease.” Kyle Smith, National Review Regarding Acosta, some note that in 2005 “police brought the case to the local prosecutor, Barry Krischer, an elected Democratic official. But Krischer wasn’t interested in pursuing felony charges against Epstein, a well-known donor to political candidates (mostly Democrats)… When Krischer refused, [local police] took the case to federal law enforcement. Federal prosecutors, it is important to note, generally have no jurisdiction over sex crimes. But they agreed to investigate whether Epstein violated federal law by, among other things, using the facilities of interstate commerce to induce young girls into prostitution… “The U.S. Attorney’s Office determined that federal charges against Epstein might not stick. But they were able to leverage their investigation to extract a plea… While the punishment was inadequate to the crime, from all reports, the experienced, career prosecutors reporting to Acosta felt it was better than any alternative. The deal put Epstein behind bars, allowed his victims to seek restitution, and put the public on notice that Epstein is a sexual predator.” Jennifer Braceras, Washington Examiner “The vast majority of criminal cases end with plea bargains — about 94% at the state level and 97% at the federal level… Perhaps one of the only good things to come from Epstein’s case is the exposure of inappropriate or fraudulent plea deals in the justice system that let accused criminals walk away from a trial, and force others to plead guilty without a chance to claim innocence. Plea bargains guarantee efficiency: costly, time-consuming trials are avoided more often than not. But at what cost?… “If anything, Acosta is a symptom of a justice system that is broken and rotting from within. He is not responsible for Epstein’s crimes, but he did facilitate a deal that resulted in a total lapse of accountability. President Trump must decide if this past failure requires Acosta’s resignation. And we must decide what to do about a criminal justice system that let a monster walk free.” Kaylee McGhee, Washington Examiner “On social media, lots of people seem to think that any revelations from this prosecution will be devastating to the party they oppose and avert their eyes from the possibility that Epstein could start talking about sordid and criminal behavior by prominent figures in their preferred party. Investigate them all, name them all, indict them all, prosecute them all. No figure is so important to a political party or the country that we need to avert our eyes from underage sex trafficking.” Jim Geraghty, National Review On the bright side… Baby bird shows up alone in Uber at Ogden rescue center. POLITICO PLAYBOOK
Trump’s increasingly erratic presidency
By ANNA PALMER, JAKE SHERMAN and DANIEL LIPPMAN
07/12/2019 06:01 AM EDT
DRIVING THE DAY
AMID A CASCADE OF ESPECIALLY PUNGENT TWEETS Thursday, President DONALD TRUMP tapped out one of his stock refrains — that he is a “Stable Genius.” But his leadership style has become more volatile than ever, with the commander in chief pinballing between opposing poles of major decisions, switching with little explanation, leaving allies inside and outside his administration unable to explain what just happened.
THURSDAY was only the most recent example. The president suddenly abandoned his quest to add a citizenship question to the census, after talking up the idea for days. A.G. BILL BARR boasted in an interview earlier this week that he had found a legal way to do it. Then Trump pulled the plug, ordering the Commerce Department to count how many undocumented immigrants there are in America — an option Commerce had rejected months ago.
— BARR also said it was “rank speculation” that the president would add the citizenship question on his own. In fact, it was accurate speculation, because the president himself acknowledged he was considering it.
And there’s more:
— THE PRESIDENT said he was going to make health care reform a priority this Congress, but we’ve heard next to nothing about it since he made that proclamation.
— IRAN … THE PRESIDENT authorized air strikes to retaliate for Iran’s downing of a U.S. drone, only to call them off at the last minute. Possibly after speaking with Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
— HIS ADMINISTRATION has called Huawei a national security threat — as have members of his party on Capitol Hill — only to have the president say he’d be happy to have the tech company be a subject of negotiations in trade talks with China.
— SHANAHAN … White House aides confidently predicted that Patrick Shanahan was safe as Defense secretary, just before he quit — or was fired.
WHAT’S GOING ON? It’s doubtful the president has changed much, and you can no longer say the Mueller investigation is weighing on him. Here’s a theory: Past aides were skilled at reading his intentions, understanding what to ignore and knowing how to redirect his whims. But recently, the administration has been unable to keep up with a president whose unstructured decision-making process has him in different positions in a few hours. For White House reporters, just trying to pin down basic facts of what the administration is doing from day to day has become a funhouse of mirrors — adding to the confusion.
NEW … Speaker NANCY PELOSI spoke with Treasury Secretary STEVEN MNUCHIN twice Thursday — the second time was at 7 p.m. for 30 minutes. Pelosi said she believes Congress needs to lift the debt limit and get a spending cap deal this month — we told you in Playbook earlier this week this was where things were heading.
— THIS IS PROGRESS. But aides tell us there’s still a ways to go. That doesn’t mean they won’t get there; it just means that there are a lot of details to hammer out. There are just EIGHT DAYS in session until the August recess. Don’t be surprised if the House has to tack on an additional week to get this done.

THE NEWEST CAMPAIGN ISSUE IN ISRAEL: JOEL BENENSON! … PM BENJAMIN NETANYAHU took a swipe at his political opponents — Benny Gantz and Yair Lapid — for hiring Joel Benenson, Obama’s former pollster.

He told Hillary Clinton to avoid mentioning or commenting on Israel in public events. Worked to advance the dangerous deal with Iran. How does a person like this get work in Israel? USMCA SIREN … IS TRUMP’S TRADE DEAL IN BIG, BIG TROUBLE? — “Trump’s big deal gets battered by 2020 Democrats and Pelosi,” by Burgess Everett, Sabrina Rodríguez and Marianne LeVine: “The Democratic presidential primary is becoming a big problem for what would be President Donald Trump’s premier bipartisan achievement.
“The leading White House contenders are amping up their opposition to the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement, which has been stalled for months. And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is showing no signs of bending without major changes to tilt the agreement to the left. …
“‘A Democratic president’s going to have different values than this president about trade. Very different values,’ said Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) in an interview. ‘I can tell you that in a Harris administration, there would be no trade deal that would be signed unless it protected American workers and it protected our environment.’
“Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) said the trade deal appears ‘to help the pharmaceutical industry enormously and have very weak labor enforcement’ and that no president should pass it. Faiz Shakir, the campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders, said the Vermont independent would seek to ‘scrap this and fight for one that favors working-class Americans.’
“Former Vice President Joe Biden has also sought changes to the trade deal, and Democratic Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota each said they oppose the agreement as written, with Klobuchar calling for alterations and Booker saying Trump’s ‘all bluster on these deals.’” POLITICO

HEATHER CAYGLE, SARAH FERRIS and JOHN BRESNAHAN: “Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez clash drags on, threatening Democratic unity”: “An internal battle among House Democrats took on new life Thursday as lawmakers turned against each other over questions of race, with the latest flare-up ignited by controversial comments from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her chief of staff.
“Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her lieutenants tried to move on but Democrats from several different factions within the party dug in, refusing to set aside lingering tensions that first broke into the open two weeks ago during a massive blowup over a border funding package. …
“New fault lines developed Thursday from what was initially a generational spat between Pelosi and a group of younger progressive upstarts that flared up over the weekend. Some members of the Congressional Black Caucus criticized Ocasio-Cortez and one even accused her of ‘using the race card’ for suggesting this week that Pelosi was ‘singling out’ 5women of color to criticize.
“‘What a weak argument,’ said Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), who is facing a primary backed by a group closely aligned with Ocasio-Cortez. ‘Because you can’t get your way, and because you are you getting pushed back, you resort to using the race card. Unbelievable.’” POLITICO

“With North Korea, he is engaging with the enemy in hopes that negotiations will yield a surrender of nuclear weapons. With China, Mr. Trump says the United States must take a big step back from an economic relationship that has strengthened a formidable rival.

Good morning, Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day. At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day. You can listen live here. The GOP Establishment’s Secret Plan to Eliminate the House Freedom Caucus (And Trump) Read any of the books from people in and around the Trump Administration and you know one thing is consistent — the establishment is still seething about Donald Trump. Read, for example, Tim Alberta’s new book where some of them are willing to talk about it. From TV green rooms to the private offices inside the West Wing, establishment Republicans have never really come to terms with the President winning and still cannot accept he beat them. To add insult to injury, Mick Mulvaney is now the White House Chief of Staff and the House Freedom Caucus is a dominant force within the party because it has Donald Trump’s ear. The establishment, having embedded within, has to do something and it has come up with a genius plan that, as an aside, will make them very, very wealthy. The presidential contest is speeding through the calendar. This weekend marks a year until the Democratic National Convention anoints a nominee in Milwaukee (the GOP convention follows in August 2020 in Charlotte). |
The 2020 census questionnaire will not ask about citizenship status, President Trump announced on Thursday, retreating to Plan C after being blocked by legal challenges, admonished by the Supreme Court for a “contrived” rationale and buffeted by statutory deadlines he could not alter. The administration will instead follow a course proposed more than a year ago to assemble available data from federal departments and agencies that may help determine the number of citizens and non-citizens living in the United States, Trump said. “It will be, we think, far more accurate,” he added during a Rose Garden event to explain an executive order that instructs the Department of Homeland Security, the Social Security Administration and other agencies to share with the Commerce Department relevant data already in existence. The Census Bureau has said it can collect citizenship records from many federal sources, including the Internal Revenue Service, the State Department and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Bristling at criticism that he caved at the end of months of court challenges and confusing public remarks that a citizenship question might accompany the census survey next year, Trump insisted “we are not backing down.” “We must have a reliable count of how many citizens, non-citizens and illegal aliens are in our country,” the president said, adding that his administration will leave “no stone unturned.” Trump, accompanied by Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, described his focus on citizenship in starkly political terms. “As shocking as it may be, far-left Democrats in our country are determined to conceal the number of illegal aliens in our midst. They probably know the number is far greater, much higher than anyone would have ever believed before,” he said. “Maybe that’s why they fight so hard. This is part of a broader left-wing effort to erode the rights of the American citizen, and it is very unfair to our country.” Barr twice congratulated Trump for deciding on a fallback that “will yield the best data the government has had in many decades,” arguing that the president’s census posture would have been upheld by the Supreme Court if there had been time to submit “a better record” than the initial Justice Department rationale about trying to protect voting rights, which the court described as “contrived.” Separately, the House earlier in the day announced plans to vote next week to hold Barr and Ross in criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with bipartisan subpoenas issued as part of the House Oversight and Reform Committee’s probe of the administration’s push to use the census to glean citizenship information. The House still plans to proceed with that vote if Barr and Ross do not turn over the subpoenaed documents, Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said in a statement Thursday night. Many demographers and analysts, including inside the Commerce Department, object to the census as a vehicle to ask about citizenship because they believe fear and confusion in some households could lead to undercounting the population, which could impact congressional districts, federal funding and benefits. The attorney general assailed the “media” for what he said was “rank speculation” that Trump flirted with defying court orders with executive action or delaying the census, although the president did both on Twitter and in public comments. Trump described his determination to both identify and quantify non-citizens and undocumented immigrants living in the United States against the backdrop of his reelection bid, in which his hardline border policies endear him to many supporters. Trump has said his administration will soon deport thousands of immigrants living illegally in major U.S. cities. A multi-city purge by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is to begin on Sunday, according to The New York Times and other news outlets. Before he ducked back into the Oval Office as skies blackened before an evening rain storm, the president averted his gaze and warded off reporters’ shouted questions with a raised arm. LEADING THE DAY |
CONGRESS: Drama is building ahead of former special counsel Robert Mueller’s highly anticipated Capitol Hill testimony on Wednesday as Democrats come up with their strategy for questioning after pushing for months to hear his testimony. Part of the strategy for Democrats centers around time constraints for the former special counsel’s appearance. Mueller’s testimony is limited to roughly two hours per committee as it stands and only 22 members on each will be allowed to ask questions. There are 41 members on the Judiciary Committee compared to 22 on the House Intelligence Committee. Democrats say their plans are still in flux and that they are still negotiating with Mueller over the logistics of the appearance. Adding a layer to the drama are murmurs the Justice Department is seeking to block two of Mueller’s deputies from testifying privately, something that is bound to shake up the agreement (The Hill). “We’ve got to be strategic, we’ve got to understand why we want to talk to him in the first place and that’s to get answers to some unanswered questions,” said Rep. Val Demings (D-Fla.), a member of both panels questioning Mueller. “Wednesday will be here before we know it and we need to make sure that we utilize that time in the most effective and most efficient way.” As they wait for Mueller’s appearance, the House Judiciary Committee voted to subpoena multiple current and former Trump administration officials as they push to receive documents and testimony from the potential subjects. The panel voted along party lines 21-12 to approve a resolution that authorizes subpoenas for 12 people who are witnesses sought in the panel’s investigation into potential obstruction and abuse of power the president. Among those subpoenaed are Trump senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former White House chief of staff John Kelly, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. |
© Getty Images > Pelosi vs. AOC: House Democrats are letting their loyalties be known in the ongoing feud between Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and most are siding with the House Democratic leader. A growing number of House Democrats who have grown frustrated with the spat between the two Democratic heavyweights, have panned Ocasio-Cortez, largely for accusing Pelosi of treating minority women unfairly. Democrats have become perturbed by the back-and-forth that has roiled the conference. “What a weak argument,” said Rep. Wm. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.). “Because you can’t get your way and because you’re getting pushback you resort to using the race card? Unbelievable. Unbelievable to me.” Others have argued that Ocasio-Cortez isn’t looking at the big picture and is instead looking at the current issues through the lens of the “squad,” which Pelosi has dismissed as “four people.” They believe Ocasio-Cortez’s group needs to look at the conference as a whole and the push to pass legislation (The Hill). “We admire them; they energize us; they’re eager,” Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) said in praise of the group. “And of course they have the luxury of — it is a luxury — just to be able to represent [their] district and to be strident. Nancy, of course, is the leader, so she has to represent all of us.” “They’ll learn. It’s all about the 218 in this game,” said Moore. “You can be a star if you want to be, but it’s all about the 218.” The Washington Post Magazine: In her House office, AOC’s chief of change. Peggy Noonan: Ocasio-Cortez a one-woman Committee to Re-elect the President. > Spending caps: With little progress on a spending deal for the 2020 fiscal year, lawmakers are conceding that a stopgap measure will be necessary to keep the government running come October. Appropriators say they can generally turn around spending bills relatively quickly once party leaders agree on overall spending levels. But the August recess is just weeks away, with the House set to leave town in two weeks, and the Senate has not yet introduced a single appropriations bill. Passing even a fraction of the 12 bills through subcommittee, committee and on the Senate floor before working out differences with the House and getting President Trump’s approval would be a herculean task (The Hill). IN FOCUS/SHARP TAKES |
2020 POLITICS & CAMPAIGNS: Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members are seething at Justice Democrats, a group aligned with Ocasio-Cortez, for their decision to endorse primary challengers against members of color, especially African American members. The group has announced that they are backing challengers against Clay, a St. Louis-based member and a prominent CBC lawmaker, and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), a Blue Dog Democrat. They have also discussed backing an insurgent candidate against Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), the No. 5 Democrat and a member of the CBC. There are also rumblings that the group could endorse challengers against a cadre of other CBC members, including Reps. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) and Anthony Brown (D-Md.). “It just seems strange that the social Democrats seem to be targeting members of the Congressional Black Caucus, individuals who have stood and fought to make sure that African Americans are included and part of this process,” said Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), a senior CBC member. “I don’t know what that agenda is, but if they want to come after members of the Black Caucus, it’s two ways,” Clay is being primaried by Cori Bush, a registered nurse and Black Lives Matter activist, for the second time. Justice Democrats endorsed Bush last cycle, but Clay, a 10-term lawmaker, defeated her by 20 points. The incumbent bashed Justice Democrats for their decision and likened them to “Russian trolls of 2016” trying to sow discord among Democrats (The Hill). “It does make you wonder what’s going on,” said Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), a CBC member. “Some names that have been mentioned all seem to be people of color, and more so CBC members.” |
© Getty Images > Polls: Yet another national poll about the 2020 Democratic contenders is out, and former Vice President Joe Biden continues to pace the field, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) trailing by 7 points as she continues her ascent in the primary. According to the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Biden leads with 26 percent of support. Warren trails the front-runner with 19 percent, while Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) both sit with 13 percent. South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg sits at 7 percent, while no other candidate registers above 2 percent support. While Biden holds a slight lead nationally, he continues to trounce the field in South Carolina. According to a new Fox News poll, he leads with 35 percent support, more than double any other candidate. Sanders and Harris trail behind with 14 and 12 percent support, respectively. Warren lags behind in the pack with 5 percent backing. The Washington Post: Biden’s Senate records could answer questions about his past actions — but they’re being kept secret. He told the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) forum that Johnson is “wrong” on the subject, adding that “ ‘open borders’ is a right-wing talking point” (The Texas Tribune) … Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) announced that his campaign raised over $750,000 and that he has over $2.5 million in the bank in his bid for the Senate. Byrne is expected to face Judge Roy Moore and former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville for the GOP nod to take on Sen. Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in 2020. |

The Squad is Not Happy Trouble has been brewing among Democrats this week as the progressive wing of the party has taken aim at Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, who they feel is singling them out in a series of rebukes and attacks. Disenchanted since they were overruled in congress over a border crisis bill which will send $4.6 million in humanitarian aid, the far-left clique has gone so far as to call Pelosi a ‘racist’ for her actions against them. An email from ‘Justice Democrats’, a PAC founded by Saikat Chakrabarti, who is now AOC’s chief of staff, related that their ‘squad’ is not happy. The email arrived in the inboxes of Justice Democrat supporters with the headline: #Squad under fire. Thursday’s email from Justice Democrats via The Washington Examiner: “The saga of Nancy Pelosi’s totally out-of-line lashing out at our squad continues. In a closed door meeting yesterday, Pelosi singled out the squad and their staffers, telling them to stop “publicly attacking other members” and not to “tweet about it.” First off, that’s an odd demand given Nancy Pelosi herself just did an interview with the New York Times last week where she specifically attacked, demeaned, and disrespected Ayanna, Alexandria, Rashida, and Ilhan. Secondly, we cannot believe that Pelosi doesn’t realize how bad of a precedent this is. She’s singling out four new leaders who are progressive women of color, and are already under constant attack by Fox News, racists, and conservatives at large. Just days ago, Tucker Carlson went on a racist rant attacking Ilhan Omar and immigrants — but instead of uniting against detention camps or comments that objectively stoke the flames of racial animus and potentially even violence, Pelosi is obsessing about tweets… …But honestly, the most infuriating part about this stems from who’s getting the blame for rocking the boat. Conservative Democrats who are members of the “problem solvers caucus” blew up Pelosi’s own border bill, and threatened to revolt if we didn’t hand over ICE and border patrol a $4.6 billion blank check. Understandably, the squad wasn’t too happy about that.” AOC’s Chief of Staff Admits Green New Deal Was Never Really About the Climate Speaking of Saikat Chakrabarti, who recently wore a T-Shirt with the face of a known Nazi collaborator in a video pumping up AOC’s work in Congress, a revelation was made recently about the real motivations behind his boss’ signature Green New Deal. From the Washington Post: “On a Wednesday morning in late May, emissaries of two of the strongest political voices on climate change convened at a coffee shop a few blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Saikat Chakrabarti, chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), was there to meet Sam Ricketts, climate director for Washington Gov. Jay Inslee (D), who is running for president almost exclusively on a platform of combating global warming. A newly released plank of Inslee’s climate change agenda had caught the attention of Chakrabarti and his boss, who had tweeted that Inslee’s “climate plan is the most serious + comprehensive one to address our crisis in the 2020 field.” Pleased by the positive reception from the demanding Green New Deal wing of the climate struggle, Ricketts had set up this meeting with Chakrabarti to establish a personal connection and share approaches to climate advocacy.” “Congrats on the rollout,” Chakrabarti told him as they sat down. “That was pretty great.” “Thank you again for the kudos you guys offered,” said Ricketts. “We wanted to be pace-setting for the field, and I think we’re there now. … I want to ask you for input … in addition to hearing what you guys are working on.” Chakrabarti had an unexpected disclosure. “The interesting thing about the Green New Deal,” he said, “is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all.” Ricketts greeted this startling notion with an attentive poker face. “Do you guys think of it as a climate thing?” Chakrabarti continued. “Because we really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.” Weekend Reading If you haven’t already, buy a copy of Mollie Hemingway and Carrie Severino’s book “Justice on Trial: The Kavanaugh Confirmation and the Future of the Supreme Court. Good morning,Recently, police officers were asked to leave a Starbucks store because a customer claimed their presence made him feel unsafe. Twenty-one percent (21%) of voters nationwide believe that request was appropriate while 79% disagree. However, among those who visit Starbucks at least three times a month, 38% believe the request was appropriate.Generally
speaking, 57% of voters feel safe when they encounter police officers
while 13% feel threatened. Thirty percent (30%) experience neither.Dunkin’
Donuts recently removed franchise rights from owners who failed to use
the E-verify system. The company said this was done to discourage
franchise owners from hiring undocumented workers. Sixty-four percent (64%) of voters believe Dunkin’ Donuts’ actions were justified. Just 17% disagree and 19% are not sure.To
ensure that people hired are legal residents of the United States, 80%
favor the law requiring use of an E-Verify system. These results are
broadly consistent with a vast collection of data showing
that eight-out-of-ten voters believe illegal immigration is bad for the
United States (eight-out-of-ten also believe that legal immigration is
good).Other data showed that 21% of voters effectively support an open borders policy.
They believe the United States has no right to decide who is eligible
to enter the country. They believe anyone who wants to live in the
United States should be allowed entry. On another topic, 57% of voters have a favorable opinion of the terms “Nationalism” and “American Nationalism.” Most believe nationalism embraces such attitudes as Patriotism, Love of the U.S. Constitution, Individual Freedom and Equality. Some
critics of nationalism attribute a number of negative attitudes with
the term such as racism and sexism. However, voters tend to reject such
views. Finally, 41% of voters believe that our nation’s
economic system is fair to most Americans. Those figures reflect a slight increase in skepticism since January when 44% believed the system was fair and 42% disagreed.By a 52% to 41% margin, men believe our economic system is fair. By a 54% to 31% margin, women disagree.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott

The Four
Horsewomen of the Democrat Apocalypse
Nancy Pelosi issued a spanking to the enfants terribles of her
caucus this week. The corporal punishment elicited more of the temper
tantrums that brought about the spanking in the first place.
Pelosi, channeling her inner Bill Belichick — the well-known critic of Snapface and Instachat — told The New York Times,
“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world.
But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and
that’s how many votes they got.”
By: Daniel J. Flynn ______________________ Mueller’s Big Lie About Russian Interference The pious horror of the Democrats about “foreign interference” in American elections is hard to take seriously, especially since most of them seek to turn foreigners — namely, illegal immigrants from Mexico — into tomorrow’s voters. A party that shrugs at open borders is in no position to lecture anyone on eroded sovereignty. By: George Neumayr ______________________ Big Banks Cave to Pressure From AOC SunTrust, a bank holding company centered in the southeastern U.S., announced on Monday that it will terminate its business relationship with CoreCivic, a leading American private prison and detention center company. The announcement was accompanied by a statement claiming that SunTrust’s decision was “made after extensive consideration of the views of our stakeholders on this deeply complex issue.” By: John Jiang ______________________ Ilhan Omar, Re-Segregation Democrats Target Tucker Carlson There they go again. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) this week launched more racist attacks, this time on Fox’s Tucker Carlson — and, for good measure, her colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) launched a charge of racism at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. By: Jeffrey Lord ______________________ Pelosi and AOC Deserve Each Other Nancy Pelosi was probably not heartbroken when the fourth-ranking member of the House Democratic Caucus, Rep. Joe Crowley, was defeated in his 2018 primary by a bartender named Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Crowley had been seriously considered for House Minority Leader in 2016, and he might well have made a serious play for the House speakership had he been reelected in 2018. From Pelosi’s perspective, it must have seemed that she had lost a potential leadership rival and gained an easily managed back-bencher. By: David Catron ______________________ The MeToo Corvette Where should a Corvette’s engine be? Historically, it has always been up front and usually under a rear-opening hood — which made it easier to see the Corvette’s engine, a very American big V8 — in all its insolently crude (pushrod, single cam, two-valve and no turbo) glory. By: Eric Peters ______________________ What Deference Does It Make? Know your role. This prescription pervades the basketball world. Adhering to it requires an honest assessment of one’s own abilities and their in relationship to one’s teammates’. Do you contribute best as a scorer, facilitator, or defender? Does your skill set work better for post-play or on the perimeter? By knowing and acting within your role, you improve the team, increasing your chances of winning. Historically, it has been abused. It does frustrate me that the current circumstance exists – especially as related to California – where death penalty laws are on the books but not enforced – weakening respect for the law. I also have a general skepticism toward government in proving their cases as justifying the death penalty. But that throat-clearing done, one of the most frustrating, anti-federalist, and unjustified opinions of the past two decades at the Supreme Court level has to be Kennedy vs. Louisiana, where Justice Anthony Kennedy and the leftists on the court joined to eliminate the ability of states to allow for the death penalty in cases of aggrieved child rape. MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Ben Kamisar
FIRST READ: NBC/WSJ poll shows there are two different Democratic primaries taking place
Maybe the biggest takeaway from the new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll – which shows Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren
topping the 2020 Dem race – is how there are two different Democratic primary contests taking place right now.
There’s the primary between
candidates and Dem voters who want big, bold change.
And there’s the primary between
those who simply want to defeat Trump.
REUTERS/Mike Segar
Fifty-four percent of Democratic primary voters say they prefer a nominee who proposes larger-scale policies that might cost more and be harder
to pass – but could still result in major change.
Among these voters,
Warren leads the pack (at 29 percent), and she’s followed by Bernie Sanders (18 percent), Biden (16 percent) and Kamala Harris (14 percent).
By contrast,
41 percent of Dem primary voters say they want a nominee who pushes for smaller-scale policies that cost less and might be easier to pass – but that bring less change.
And among these voters,
Biden holds a substantial lead (at 35 percent), followed by Harris (14 percent, Warren (8 percent), Pete Buttigieg (8 percent) and Sanders (7 percent).
Similarly,
Democratic primary voters are divided on what’s more important to them –
a candidate who comes closest to their views on issues, or one who has
the best chance to defeat President Donald
Trump.
Fifty-one
percent say issues are more important, and those voters break for Biden
(18 percent), Warren (18 percent), Sanders (17 percent) and Harris (11
percent).
That’s
compared with 45 percent who believe defeating Trump is more important,
and they break Biden (at 34 percent), Warren (21 percent), Harris (16
percent), Buttigieg (8 percent) and Sanders (6
percent).
Bottom line:
The big-change Democratic voters outnumber the small-change ones.
But you can see a situation how Warren and Sanders could split the
former group, and how Biden might lap the field with the latter.
That’s Biden’s path to victory, even in Iowa – if his candidacy holds up.
The four candidate tiers in our NBC/WSJ poll
As for the overall horserace in our poll, you can divide it into four categories.
The Top 5: Biden (26 percent), Warren (19 percent), Harris (13 percent), Sanders (13 percent) and Buttigieg (7 percent).
The 2 Percenters (the threshold to make the September debates): Andrew Yang (2 percent), Beto O’Rourke (2 percent).
The 1 Percenters:
Amy Klobuchar, Julian Castro, Cory Booker, Jay Inslee, Marianne
Williamson, John Delaney, John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet.
The less-than-1-percenters: Everyone else.
The good news for Booker, Klobuchar, Castro and even O’Rourke is that they get Democratic voters in our poll to say want to learn more about these candidates.
But that bad news for those in the 1 percent and below is that it looks like
this field is going to winnow fast.
And it’s not like these candidates have NOT had moments and exposure…
Trump loses and declares victory anyway (again)
REUTERS/Carlos Barria
Much like he did with the government shutdown and the 2018 midterm results,
President Trump lost his citizenship/census battle – but declared victory anyway.
“President
Donald Trump announced Thursday that he is backing off his effort to
include a citizenship question in the 2020 census and is instead issuing
an executive order directing departments and
agencies to better share data related to the number of citizens and
noncitizens in the country,”
per NBC News.
By the
way, using existing databases is what the U.S. Census Bureau said Trump
could have done without putting the citizenship question on the census,
as
NPR’s Domenico Montanaro notes.
The question we have:
Who convinced Trump this was a dead end?
TWEET OF THE DAY: Free speech for me but not for thee
2020 VISION: Candidates of the corn
On Sunday,
12 Democratic presidential candidates will speak at Progress Iowa’s Corn Feed event in Cedar Rapids, per NBC’s Maura Barrett and Priscilla Thompson.
(An Iowa summer wouldn’t be complete without presidential candidates and corn, right?)
The 12: Michael Bennet, Pete Buttigieg, Julián Castro, Bill
de Blasio, John
Delaney, Kirsten Gillibrand, John Hickenlooper, Jay Inslee, Amy
Klobuchar, Seth Moulton, Tim Ryan and Marianne Williamson.
During the
cattle call, candidates will be given ten-minutes on stage to address
the crowd; the time-limit will be strictly enforced.
REUTERS/Scott Morgan
On the campaign trail today: Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke are all in New Hampshire… Kirsten Gillibrand continues her “Broken Promises Tour,” making three stops in Michigan… Cory Booker, in Boston, holds a press conference on preventing gun violence… And John Hickenlooper stumps in Iowa.
Dispatches from NBC’s embeds:
Four
candidates spoke at the League of United Latin American Citizens
presidential forum in Milwaukee yesterday, and NBC’s Gary Grumbach and
Micki Fahner have the highlights:
Julián Castro:
[On his immigration plan] “One of the things that distinguishes what I
put forward versus some of the critics, I’m actually talking about
solving this challenge. I
said we need to do a 21st century Marshall plan for Central America to
partner with those countries so people can find safety and opportunity
at home instead of having to come to the United States and that’s a
long-term way to solve this challenge.”
Elizabeth Warren:
Some of the loudest applause for Elizabeth Warren came when a question
about the US Women’s National Soccer Team was posed. “When women produce
then by golly women
ought to be paid for it. Come on,” Warren said.
Bernie Sanders:
QUESTION: “You’ve called it ageism in the Democratic Party, some of the
younger candidates asked you to pass the torch how do you view this
generational change in
the Democratic Party?”
SANDERS:
“I think we need a lot of change in this country to tell you the truth.
But when you look at a candidate, age is a factor, experience as a
factor in the candidates, record as a factor and
most importantly what that candidate stands for is a factor.”
Beto O’Rourke:
The former Texas Representative was asked about the deportations and
ICE Raids allegedly planned for later this weekend, saying that they
make us a “less safe” country.
“When immigrant communities fear local law enforcement, fear federal
law enforcement, they are less likely to report crimes, to testify in
trials, to serve as witnesses, they’re no longer participating in the
civic life of our communities and we are less safe
as a result,” he said.
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 35 percent
35 percent.
That’s Joe Biden’s share of the vote in a new
Fox News poll of South Carolina.
Biden holds a big lead over the field,
more support than the next four candidates sitting behind him combined
(Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker).
The
Palmetto State is an important state for the former vice president, one
where he’s cultivated strong relationships over the years. Biden is
acutely aware of that reality—last week, he chose the
state as the backdrop for
his apology for his comments about working with segregationist senators.
And so far,
it doesn’t look like the flap over those comments (or the attacks on his
opposition to federally-mandated busing) has hurt his standing with
black voters there. The Fox poll shows Biden pulling in 41 percent of the black vote in South Carolina.

Amazon praises Trump for defending American companies from new French tax Posted: 12 Jul 2019 05:16 AM PDT The Washington Post may have a bias against President Trump, but their big brother in Jeff Bezos’s portfolio, Amazon, is very pleased with the President right now. Following the French Senate passing a new tax that goes after big tech giants, President Trump ordered an inquiry into the tax similar to the inquiry used to […] The post Amazon praises Trump for defending American companies from new French tax appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Saikat Chakrabarti: The Green New Deal isn’t about climate change Posted: 11 Jul 2019 10:36 PM PDT When Americans think of climate change solutions, they think of electric cars, recycling, and renewable energy. This is why when the “Green New Deal” was first announced, it was strikingly apparent that this wasn’t about climate change. One cannot generate a $100 trillion plan for climate change, even if it encompassed the whole world. Stop the games and just start deporting Posted: 11 Jul 2019 08:32 PM PDT Do you remember that time when President Obama announced ICE raids prior to them happening so illegal immigrants could hide? Me neither. How about that time when far-left radicals and mainstream media literally wept over deportations under the Obama administration? Nope, it didn’t happen. That’s the moral of the story as E. Jean Carroll’s book, What Do We Need Men For?: A Modest Proposal, has been thrown on he scrap heap of […] The post Trump rape-accuser E. Democrat W. Lacy Clay hammers AOC, Saikat Chakrabarti for use of race card Posted: 11 Jul 2019 03:15 PM PDT Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s welcome in the Democratic House caucus is wearing thin as her fight with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spills over into claims of racism by both her and her Chief of Staff, Saikat Chakrabarti. The Justice Democrats‘ dynamic duo are going hard after any Democrats they deem to be too moderate, […] The post Democrat W. If Democratic mega-donor Haim Saban doesn’t like Bernie Sanders, he shouldn’t like half the field Posted: 11 Jul 2019 12:59 PM PDT Haim Saban, the man who brought us the Power Rangers and who became a billionaire when Disney bought the rights to the children’s brand of shows, movies, games, and merchandise, has been a great friend to the Democratic Party for years. But there’s a Democratic candidate for president Saban doesn’t like, and he’s not afraid […] The post If Democratic mega-donor Haim Saban doesn’t like Bernie Sanders, he shouldn’t like half the field appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
In a post-truth America, you’re not even allowed to ask if someone is here legally Posted: 11 Jul 2019 12:49 PM PDT Sovereignty is a funny thing. It’s a concept that can only remain true as long as the people believe it. Once they stop believing they are members of a sovereign nation, the rule of law becomes relative and debatable. The current narrative being pushed by progressives is intended to make this a reality. Take, for […] The post In a post-truth America, you’re not even allowed to ask if someone is here legally appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
San Francisco homelessness surges 30% since 2017 Posted: 11 Jul 2019 12:30 PM PDT San Francisco is the shining beacon of Democratic policies. They’ve carried the mantle of progressivism for decades; as San Francisco goes, Democrat-majority cities follow. But the pretty California people, tech boom beneficiaries, and trust fund kids who make up leadership in this far-left city are a small fraction of the population. Most others are barely […] The post San Francisco homelessness surges 30% since 2017 appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Destroying two Leftist lies for the price of one: Jesus a Socialist and Scandinavian Socialism Posted: 11 Jul 2019 12:05 PM PDT Selling socialistic slavery isn’t easy, it takes blatant lies and obfuscations, we destroy two of them. The Authoritarian Socialist Left has really become quite adept at conjuring up lies to sell their socialistic slavery. Lies and mythology are all part of the sales pitch since it’s an ideology that defies logic as well as human nature. Failed presidential candidate Hillary

07/12/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Presented by Fisher Investments: VP Shortlist; Conspiracy Theories; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on Jul 12, 2019 09:01 am Hello, it’s Friday, July 12, 2019, the day of the week when I reprise a quotation intended to be uplifting or thought-provoking. Today’s comes from Winston Churchill, with an assist from an earlier writer named Robert Briffault, courtesy of The Yale Book of Quotations and The Chronicle of Higher Education. If that seems like a lot of sourcing for a single quote, so be it: As regular readers of this morning missive know, I’m a stickler for attribution. So is British-American linguist Geoffrey K. Pullum, whose brief essay published three years ago today inspired today’s quotation, which I’ll offer in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Predicting the Democrats’ VP Shortlist. Myra Adams dons her prognosticator hat as potential pairings begin to suggest themselves. Isikoff Spins His Own Russian Conspiracy Theories — Again. Frank Miele takes issue with the Yahoo news reporter’s new article on the death of DNC staffer Seth Rich in 2016. In Post-Roe World, Pro-Lifers Equip Families to Succeed. Scott Walker and Kristan Hawkins spotlight efforts to provide mothers, fathers and struggling families with support. Why the Right Should Cheer Marijuana Legalization. In RealClearMarkets, Brady Cobb advises the GOP to seize upon a winning issue with broad crossover appeal in 2020. Washington Needs a Nicaragua Strategy. In RealClearWorld, Ryan Berg argues that continued pressure is needed to capitalize on actions that forced Daniel Ortega to empty his jails of political prisoners. Social Capital Is America’s Stock-in-Trade. In RealClearPolicy, Erin Rodewald hails a survey indicating that Americans’ sense of wealth hinges less on economics than on good old-fashioned relationships. * * * In the early summer of 2016, British voters’ decision to leave the European Union (albeit by a small majority) left intellectuals on both sides of the British Channel — and both sides of the Atlantic Ocean — searching for answers. Geoffrey Pullum was one of them. Born in Scotland and raised in England, Pullum moved to America in 1980, became a U.S. citizen, and spent 27 years as a college professor on the West Coast before returning to Britain in 2007. Three years ago, he felt unmoored by Brexit. So he turned, as any good Anglo-American would, to Winston Churchill for solace. Specifically, what came to his mind was the famous Churchillian observation about democracy being the worst form of government except for all the others. “As soon as I got back to my library after the referendum,” Pullum wrote on the Chronicle of Higher Education blog, “I took down the only really serious reference book on quotations to check on the accuracy of the half-remembered Churchill remark.” The volume he was referring to is one I often consult myself. It’s The Yale Book of Quotations, edited by the incomparable Fred R. Shapiro. I won’t say it’s my Bible, because that would be blasphemous, but I will reveal that it’s on the same bookcase shelf as the Bible. But I digress. Here is the Churchill line Pullum found: “Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” These words are from a speech in the House of Commons on Nov. 11, 1947. As the “it has been said” caveat indicates, Churchill had heard this sentiment previously. Fred Shapiro, as is his wont, found the original source: Robert Briffault’s writings from 1930. Pullum reports being not quite mollified by either version. “The Churchillian bon mot remains a classic, a witty and memorable expression of a paradoxical truth about political systems,” he wrote. “But whereas it used to make me smile, today it doesn’t.” Before the year was out, the results of the U.S. presidential election would induce similar doubts in the hearts of many other intellectuals. But let’s return for a minute to the original observations of Briffault, who pulled no punches. “Democracy is the worst form of government. It is the most inefficient, the most clumsy, the most unpractical,” he wrote. “It reduces wisdom to impotence and secures the triumph of folly, ignorance, clap-trap and demagogy.” “Yet,” he continued, “democracy is the only form of social order that is admissible, because it is the only one consistent with justice.” And there’s your quote of the week. Carl M. Cannon Washington Bureau chief, RealClearPolitics @CarlCannon (Twitter) ccannon@realclearpolitics.com Like a summer blockbuster sequel, debt ceiling chatter is back, thanks partly to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s recent Congressional testimony. But, the debt ceiling has always been mostly symbolic: Keep it or lose it, reach it or exceed it, it doesn’t change much for the US economy. Click here to read more. |
