Wednesday, June 19, 2019 Immigration Crackdown On Monday, President Donald Trump tweeted, “Next week ICE will begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States. They will be removed as fast as they come in.” Twitter

On Tuesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) tweeted, “This administration has established concentration camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrants, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying.” Twitter From the Left The left opposes increased deportations but does not believe ICE is capable of carrying them out, and argues that the outrage against Ocasio-Cortez is obscuring the real issue. “One of the first immigration actions Trump took as president was to eliminate a system of priorities President Barack Obama created for deportations. The system prioritized the deportation of people with serious criminal records or who otherwise posed a threat to public safety, and its creation was an acknowledgement by the Obama administration that it’s simply not possible to deport the 11 million people who live in the United States without proper legal documents…

“By all measures, a plan to deport ‘millions’ of people is an astounding exaggeration — even beginning to deport millions, as Trump pledged ICE would do, stretches the truth to a breaking point… ICE has deported an average of 90,000 people from the interior of the United States in recent years. The largest number of people ICE deported overall — from the interior as well as recent border crossers — was about 420,000 people in 2012.”
Maryam Saleh, The Intercept

“More to the point, perhaps, doing so would necessarily entail shattering large numbers of families, including ones well established over a decade or more of residency and whose children, born in this country, are citizens. As Mr. Trump and his administration discovered a year ago, Americans are rightly appalled at the sight of government agents wrenching apart parents and their children; they would likely react just as badly to a rerun involving their neighbors as they did to the original iteration, in which agents focused on families who had recently crossed the border.”
Editorial Board, Washington Post

“Trump tweeted about ‘the millions of illegal aliens… they will be removed as fast as they come in.’ This does not make sense. The asylum seekers at the border cannot be immediately removed because they have a legal right to apply for humanitarian relief… What we see here is a chief executive who is well aware of his vulnerability to a Democratic challenger, desperately trying to rile up his followers by bashing immigrants. After several years of draconian immigration policies and optics, including images of children separated from their families and kept in pens, it is unlikely to persuade voters in 2020.”
Raul A. Reyes, CNN

“Trump seems convinced that draconian immigration policy is good politics. But evidence is mounting that he’s wrong… a Fox News poll released this week indicates that Trump’s fixation on curtailing all forms of immigration isn’t resonating with voters. Half of American voters who responded to the poll said they think the Trump administration has gone too far with immigration enforcement — more than double the percentage who said they don’t think Trump has gone far enough… It’s unclear whether his announcement was meant as anything beyond an empty show of strength. But either way, the mere fact that Trump views using the power of the state against immigrants and their communities as a winning reelection strategy is a dark omen 15 months ahead of the next presidential election.”
Aaron Rupar, Vox

“The administration’s efforts at deterring asylum families through displays of toughness and force have failed spectacularly, because they are fleeing conditions at home that are also terrible. There is a legitimate policy dispute here — Trump wants to detain families for far longer, so they can’t evade hearings, while Democrats favor addressing root causes of migrations and reforms to humanely manage the influx — but one thing that’s inescapable is that toughness as deterrence has been unmasked as total folly.”
Greg Sargent, Washington Post

Regarding Ocasio-Cortez’s comment, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) tweeted, “One of the lessons from the Holocaust is ‘Never Again’ – not only to mass murder, but also to the dehumanization of people, violations of basic rights, and assaults on our common morality. We fail to learn that lesson when we don’t callout such inhumanity right in front of us.”
Jerrold Nadler, Twitter

If you’re more upset @AOC called the camps at the border ‘concentration camps’ than you are about what has actually been happening there, you’re doing it wrong.”
Justin Kanew, Twitter From the Right The right generally supports increased deportations and condemns Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks. “If, as a Homeland Security adviser has explained, the targets of Trump’s deportation plans will be those illegal immigrants who have failed to show for their assigned court hearings, then Trump is morally, ethically, and legally justified in deporting them. The tut-tutting chorus might as well spare us their faux moral histrionics. The immigrants Trump is targeting are people who have broken American law not once but twice. First, they entered the country illegally, without papers. Second, when given a court hearing (where they could, for example, make bids for asylum or otherwise make a case for being allowed to stay), they again thumbed their noses at the legitimate authority of their generous hosts…

It is not heartless to demand basic obedience to our laws — especially from people who claim they want to make this their home… One of the greatest strengths of this great nation is its strong rule of law. That strength depends upon laws enacted by delegates of the citizenry being enforced. If immigrants will not respect this rule of law, they have no business spending another day in this blessed land that the law protects.”
Quin Hillyer, Washington Examiner

“When I was the director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations under then-Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson during the Obama administration, we conducted an operation like the one President Trump is supporting now. ICE deportation officers arrested immigration fugitives – including families that had been ordered removed by a federal immigration judge, but who had ignored the orders… That operation resulted in an almost immediate decline in illegal border crossings, because we sent a strong message that we were a nation of laws and our legal system must have integrity…

“You might as well just open the border and let everyone who wants to enter the U.S. come in if deportation orders handed down by [a] judge are ignored not only by those ordered deported but by our law enforcement agencies. What do you think the border would look like then? And what dangers would we face?… The job of ICE employees, we should all remember, is to enforce the laws enacted by Congress. Congress has the power to change the immigration laws – ICE law enforcement officers do not. These dedicated officers do not deserve the criticism they are drawing for doing their jobs.”
Tom Homan, Fox News

“This is one of the reasons why Donald J. Trump slingshot to the top of the heap during the 2016 Republican primaries. It’s one of the reasons why he’s president of the United States right now. He promised to enforce the border and—shocker—deport people who shouldn’t be here. That’s not controversial. That’s the law.”
Matt Vespa, Townhall

Critics, however, argue that “our country is already dealing with a significant challenge at our southern border… We need more resources – not fewer – dedicated to managing the men, women, and children who are arriving daily, in order to ensure that they are able to pursue their asylum claims in a fair and efficient manner. If the president orders Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to move away from that critical mission in order to focus on the detention and deportation of people who are — in the vast majority of cases — not public safety threats, the humanitarian crisis will only worsen.”
Ali Noorani, Fox News

Regarding Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s comment, “The Trump administration doesn’t call [them] concentration camps for the same reasons the Obama, Bush, and Clinton administrations didn’t — they’re not concentration camps. With thousands of people flooding across the border, the US and Mexico both have to set up facilities to house them while their status gets adjudicated. Their presence in those facilities are necessarily temporary and ends when their cases are finally decided, at which point they’re either admitted or sent out of the country…

“This is not a situation in which citizens and residents of a country are being relocated en masse into detention facilities, as happened to the Japanese by FDR in World War II, where the term applies even with its historical baggage. It’s certainly not the situation created by actual fascists in the 1930s and 1940s.”
Ed Morrissey, Hot Air On the bright side…

THE RESURGENT

The Resurgent’s Morning Briefing for June 19,2019 View this email in your browser Share Tweet Forward Good morning,

Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day.  At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day.  You can listen live here.

Do Democrats Believe This Or Are They Trying to Get President Trump Shot? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is actually not doing anything to improve the situation at the border except telling everyone the President is running concentration camps and insisting she is serious. If the congresswoman actually believes the President is a danger who will be re-elected without impeachment, it sounds like her fall back strategy is to try to get the man shot by hoping to inspire the next James Hodgkinson. I cannot emphasize enough that if Donald Trump accused a Democrat of running concentration camps or, frankly, if any elected Republican had made those claims against Barack Obama, the media would be all over the person saying such a thing and insisting they were trying to incite violence against President Obama. What Do Colleges Owe Us? There is a column in today’s Atlanta Journal-Constitution questioning whether Georgia Tech has gotten “too elite” for the residents of Georgia. “It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood.”

JAMES MADISON Good morning,

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that starting next week, ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) will begin the process of “removing the millions of illegal aliens” in the United States.

Estimates on the number of illegal immigrants in the United States range from 10 million to 29 million.

“We can’t wait for Congress. We need to act ourselves,” acting ICE Director Mark Morgan told The Epoch Times earlier this year.

All Eyes on the Trump Administration
A lot is happening—let’s try to recap. Things started late Monday night, when President Trump announced on Twitter (of course), that starting next week, ICE will “begin the process of removing the millions of illegal aliens who have illicitly found their way into the United States.”

“They will be removed as fast as they come in,” he said. “Mexico, using their strong immigration laws, is doing a very good job of stopping people long before they get to our Southern Border. Guatemala is getting ready to sign a Safe-Third Agreement. The only ones who won’t do anything are the Democrats in Congress. They must vote to get rid of the loopholes, and fix asylum! If so, Border Crisis will end quickly!”

The tweet followed remarks by newly-installed acting ICE Director Mark Morgan, who warned earlier this month that ICE would intensify enforcement against illegal immigrants already living in the United States, including families. A Princeton professor didn’t like the proposal, calling the potential raids a “terrorist act.” AOC accused the administration of running “concentration camps” at the Southern border, even using the phrase “never again.” Liberals ran to her defense, but The Federalist is here for her with a history lesson

Also in administration news: The president announced (on Twitter!) that Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan, “who has done a wonderful job,” will withdraw from the confirmation process, and that he will name Secretary of the Army Mark Esper to be his acting replacement. Context, as explained by Axios:

USA Today reported earlier Tuesday that the FBI has been investigating a domestic dispute between Shanahan and his then-wife, who was arrested after punching him in the face in 2010. In a separate incident, Shanahan’s son was arrested for beating his mother with a baseball bat.”

“Shanahan told the Washington Post that he wanted to protect his young adult children from traumatic past memories, and that public airing of the incidents would ‘ruin my son’s life.’”

This all comes as the Trump administration announced plans to send 1,000 additional troops to the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran. Heritage’s foreign policy expert James Carafano breaks down what that means.

On the 2020 Campaign Trail IT’S OFFICIAL: Trump is in, making his case for a second term. And the people attending dressed en theme.  Joe Biden proposes Medicaid for All. (Does this mean he’s finally admitting Obamacare wasn’t that good?) Move over, Beto. Elizabeth Warren is the media’s latest flavor of the month. Amy Klobuchar, who’s still struggling in the polls, finally released some policy proposals. And the Bernie Breakup: Democrat socialist thinks government should “definitely take a look at” splitting up tech giants Google, Apple, and Amazon.
Feminists Are Finally Catching On—Hormonal Birth Control Might Not be All That Great
A writer at The Cut is asking something that we here at BRIGHT have been wondering for years: “What might hormonal contraception be doing to our minds, our moods, our behavior? And if science hasn’t yet found a clear answer, how much does that matter?”

These are important questions that women should be asking about the pill. I’ve written about some of the scary side effects here and here, and there’s no question more research needs to be done. But fair warning: The Cut comes at the question as if it’s “anti-feminist” to even ask.

“The pro-choice climate that allowed our current wave of Pill skepticism to flourish is beginning to look like a thing of the past, and women’s ability to question their contraceptive choices feels increasingly like a luxury. As attacks on women’s bodily autonomy continue, quitting the Pill remains the purview of privileged women in liberal enclaves who have the time and resources to use things like non-hormonal IUDs and cycle-tracking apps — not to mention health care and therapists and access to abortions and morning-after pills when such methods fail.”

(Note: Many cycle-tracking apps are actually free.)

Finally! An Advice Column Worth Reading
Joy Pullman, executive editor of The Federalist, is a thirty-something working mom who has been happily married for ten years, has five young kids, and strong reality-based convictions about being a woman and just about everything else. I wasn’t alone in wondering how she does it all—motherhood, working (from home) full-time and then some, and even writing a book. So the ladies of The Federalist convinced her to start an advice column!

For the inaugural edition, Joy addresses how “Pregnancy Gets Better With Practice,” and “How To Handle SAHM Blues.” Read! If you have questions you’d like Joy to address, email her at joy[at]TheFederalist[dot]com. She won’t identify you by name.

SCOTT RASMUSSEN

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Fifty-eight percent (58%) of voters nationwide believe that America’s best days are still to come. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found this optimism in every measured demographic group.Sixty-seven percent (67%) of Republicans believe our nation’s best days are still to come, a view shared by 54% of Democrats and 50% of Independent voters. That optimism is expressed by 63% of suburban voters, 58% of urban voters, and 53% of rural voters. Fifty-nine percent (59%) of white voters believe America’s best days are still to come. So do 58% of Hispanic voters and 53% of black voters..This optimism exists despite the fact that 74% believe America’s political system is badly broken. Just 13% disagree with that assessment. Again, these views are widely shared. Among voters under 35, 64% believe the political system is badly broken. That increases to 83% among senior citizens. These views are consistent with the primary themes of my latest book. In The Sun is Still Rising: Politics Has Failed But America Will Not, I shared my own pessimism about American politics and my optimism about America itself. A key is recognizing that politicians don’t really lead the nation, they follow the culture. Like most Americans, I know that positive change generally comes from outside of the political system.Eighty-four percent (84%) of voters nationwide have a favorable opinion of free markets. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that total includes 87% of Republicans, 85% of Independents, and 81% of Democrats.Forty-one percent (41%) have a favorable opinion of Socialism. That includes 60% of Democrats, 33% of Independents, and 23% of Republicans. However, data released earlier shows that most who like the term Socialism do not think of it as an economic ideology.Voters strongly believe that Free Markets are better than Socialism when it comes to promoting economic growth (55% to 12%), creating quality jobs (52% to 13%),  and giving everyone a chance to succeed (44% to 19%).Voters give Free Markets a more modest advantage on helping people in poverty reach the middle class (37% to 22%), creating a fair society (35% to 25%), and reducing poverty (33% to 24%).Voters are close to evenly divided on which system will be better at reducing health care costs: 30% say free markets and 26% socialism. However, it’s worth noting that there is very little support for requiring all Americans to get health insurance through a government program.Looking to Election 2020, ScottRasmussen.com asks several baseline questions every single day to monitor the public mood. One key indicator is the Generic Ballot: “If the election for Congress were held today, would you vote for the Republican or the Democrat from your District?” This morning’s update shows Democrats with a 41% to 35% advantage on that question. That’s been fairly stable since Election Day (our Generic Ballot polling showed Democrats with an eight-point advantage heading into the midterm elections). We also update the president’s Job Approval rating each weekday at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. It’s been within two points of 46% every single day since January 28.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott     Stay Informed Up To The Minute and Share ContentDeeper CurrentsScott Rasmussen offers his personal insight, analysis, and opinion on current political races, issues, and controversy. It’s worth noting that in her letter calling for an investigation of the event, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos referenced the ‘viewpoint diversity’ requirement under Title VI. There are some 15 Middle East resource centers across the country that have been receiving tax-payer funds for years even as they run roughshod over the terms and conditions of their Title VI grants by offering one-sided anti-Israel programming and promoting BDS. We noted in a prior post that the appointment of Ken Marcus at the DoE was a gamechanger in part because of his interest in addressing the problem of virulent anti-Israel bias in Title VI Middle East centers, which is one of the reasons virulently anti-Israel activists launched a smear campaign to get his nomination derailed, Action Alert: Anti-Israel lobby intensifies campaign against nomination of anti-Semitism scholar Ken Marcus. THUNDERDOME: TAKING ON BIDEN WILL INCLUDE OBAMA
Imagine a situation where three years after the most popular former president in your party left office, the overwhelming majority of candidates for your party’s nomination are explicitly running against his signature domestic policy. Wouldn’t that kind of be a big deal, a major news story if it happened? Well, it is happening, and no one seems to care. By running on Medicare for All, Democratic candidates are saying that Obamacare failed to deliver on its promise. They can blame that on any number of things – GOP intransigence, the Supreme Court, and the inherent villainy of insurers being the obvious ones – but they cannot reasonably claim for upending everything Obamacare did with a new system while also saying it worked.

MEET THE PRESS

FIRST READ: Rock of Ages: Trump plays greatest hits at re-election rally

Like an aging rock star, President Trump played all of his greatest hits at his re-election rally last night in Orlando, Fla.

And he offered little else that was new.

Trump mentioned Hillary Clinton multiple times.

“If you want to know how the system is rigged, just compare how they came after us for three years with everything they have versus the free pass they gave to Hillary and her aides after they set up an illegal server.”

He talked about his crowd size and criticized the news media.

“You know I said this is a very big arena for a Tuesday night. I said, you know if we have about three or four empty seats, the Fake News will say, headlines, he didn’t fill up the arena.”

And he had nicknames for his current political opponents.

“Well, tell Sleepy Joe that we found the magic wand. Sleepy guy!”

“More than 120 Democrats in Congress have also signed up to support Crazy Bernie Sanders’ crazy socialist takeover of health care.”

Don’t get us wrong: Old rock bands can still pack arenas – and make big bucks in the process.

But the problem with keeping all of the old fans happy by playing the greatest hits is that you don’t work on anything new.

That’s arguably Trump’s biggest vulnerability heading into 2020: Are there any new fans to win over after getting just 46 percent of the popular vote in 2016?

And it creates a dilemma for Democratic voters – fight Trump with your own aging rock star who’s leading in the polls with 500-plus days until the general election?

Or fight him with something that’s entirely new?

Don’t stop believin’…

UN investigator says Saudi crown prince could be liable for Khashoggi murder

“The United Nations extrajudicial executions investigator said there was ‘credible evidence’ that high-level Saudi officials, including powerful Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, could be liable for the killing of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi,” NBC News writes.

“In an 101-page report into the journalist’s murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October, Agnes Callamard called on U.N. bodies or the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to ‘demand’ a follow-up criminal investigation.”

2020 VISION: Biden: “Rich people are just as patriotic as poor people”

At a Manhattan fundraiser with bold-faced Wall Street types last night, Joe Biden said he opposed demonizing rich Americans.

“By the way, you know, remember I got in trouble with some of the people on my team, on the Democratic side, because I said, ‘You know what I’ve found is rich people are just as patriotic as poor people,’” he said, per a pool report of the fundraiser.

More Biden: “Not a joke. I mean, we may not want to demonize anybody who has made money. The truth of the matter is, you all, you all know, you all know in your gut what has to be done.”

And: “We can disagree in the margins, but the truth of the matter is it’s all within our wheelhouse and nobody has to be punished. No one’s standard of living will change, nothing would fundamentally change.”

Over to you, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

That’s the number of months that have passed since the Trump administration last had a CONFIRMED secretary of defense James Mattis.

On Tuesday, acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan stepped down and withdrew from consideration for the Cabinet position.

Trump named Army Secretary Mark Esper to replace Shanahan as acting secretary.

“The announcement came within minutes of a report published in The Washington Post that outlined a series of alleged domestic violence incidents within Shanahan’s family,” per NBC News.

Remember when Trump said, “I alone can fix this”?

Well, he’s pretty much alone governing right now.

To support immigration, we MUST oppose illegal immigration Posted: 19 Jun 2019 01:35 AM PDT The most dangerous threat to immigrants in this country is the influx of illegal immigrants. This isn’t an opinion. It’s demonstrable that illegal immigrants harm legal immigrants the most by taking their jobs, resources, benefits, and space. But more importantly, the crime, disease, and poverty they bring here directly affect legal immigrants. Democrats love to claim […] The post To support immigration, we MUST oppose illegal immigration appeared first on Conservative Christian News.

It’s time for primary challengers to weed out the RINOs Posted: 18 Jun 2019 04:50 PM PDT So far, there are two primary goals for the American Conservative Movement. 06/19/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Ground Game; Diversity Illusion; a Grand Lady By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 19, 2019 09:16 am
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 19, 2019. On this date in history, a French frigate brought a very important lady to our shores, a beacon to immigrants and an immigrant herself. Yes, this is the date that the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor. “We hold these truths to be self-evident,” wrote the great Francophile Thomas Jefferson while formulating an “unalienable” human right to liberty and a life that allows us to pursue happiness. As so the good ship Isere plied the Atlantic Ocean while towing Lady Liberty to her permanent home at Bedloe’s Island. It was a gift from the people of France — one originally intended to help Americans observe the centennial celebration of the Declaration of Independence. In a moment, I’ll have an additional observation about this iconic statue, which I’ve written about in this space previously. First, I’d steer you to  RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Trump, Dems Pledge Early Ground Games. Susan Crabtree reports on both parties’ efforts to register and mobilize voters in key 2020 states. The “Most Diverse Congress” Is Really the Least Diverse. Neal Simon explains that an increasing lack of political diversity is pushing lawmakers into one of two corners, with more gridlock the result. For Planned Parenthood, Abortion Access Outweighs Women’s Health. Jeanne Mancini comments on the St. Louis abortion clinic that faces closure over safety concerns. Spectrum Allocation and the Future of Vehicle Safety. In RealClearMarkets, Ian Adams and James Dunstan spotlight the limits of the electromagnetic spectrum and its impact on connected-vehicle technology. Hong Kong Remains a Test for the Free World. In RealClearWorld, Mike Gallagher urges Congress to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act. Can Fish Survive in Milk? RealClearScience editor Ross Pomeroy writes that the seemingly silly question is relevant to climate change. * * * Officially called “Liberty Enlightening the World,” the Statue of Liberty was the idea of a Parisian named Edouard de Laboulaye. His original inspiration wasn’t America’s immigration policies. It was the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, and the 13th Amendment to U.S. Constitution. French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design it, and it was Bartholdi who chose the location where it would stand and who was later given the keys to New York City by appreciative civic leaders. First erected in Paris, Lady Liberty was presented to the U.S. ambassador to France in 1884. It was then dismantled, packed into 214 crates and shipped across the sea. Laboulaye had initially envisioned the statue being dedicated at America’s centennial, on July 4, 1876. That deadline was missed — by 10 years. Nonetheless, a vast crowd gathered in New York on Oct. 28, 1886 at a ceremony overseen by President Grover Cleveland. The famous words we associate with Lady Liberty weren’t affixed to her pedestal until 1903. Written by American poet Emma Lazarus, they read: Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Lazarus had been inspired by the Jewish refugees she met while volunteering in resettlement efforts on Ellis Island. Though Lazarus died in 1887, the emigrating families she encountered were not unlike the Russian-born Jews whose surname was changed at Ellis Island in 1893 from Beilin to Baline. Eventually, one of family’s sons changed it to “Berlin.” His first name was Irving, and he would later put Emma Lazarus’ poem to use in a 1949 Broadway musical, “Miss Liberty.” It is believed to be the only song Irving Berlin ever produced that borrowed someone else’s words.  Carl M.
