Friday, June 14, 2019 Hong Kong Protests “Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched through Hong Kong |
Sunday to voice their opposition to legislation that would allow
people to be extradited to mainland China where they could face
politically charged trials.” AP News
“Scuffles broke out between demonstrators and police in Hong Kong on
Thursday as hundreds of people kept up a protest against a planned
extradition law with mainland China, a day after police fired tear gas
and rubber bullets to break up big crowds. Protests around the city’s
legislature on Wednesday forced the postponement of debate on the extradition bill, which many people in Hong Kong fear will undermine freedoms and confidence in the commercial hub.” Reuters
Despite the odds, both sides are cheering the protestors in their fight against China:
“For
any protest anywhere, a million marchers would be extraordinary. In
Hong Kong, it means 1 out of every 7 people. Yet unlike in 2003, this
time the government has reaffirmed it intends to ignore public opinion.
In any halfway representative society, Chief Executive Carrie Lam would
have to resign… It’s a clarifying moment. China has been moving the goal posts on Hong Kong’s freedoms
ever since laying its hands on the territory in 1997. Ms. Lam has now
shown the world that the interests her government serves aren’t Hong
Kong’s but Beijing’s.”
William McGurn, Wall Street Journal
“The rise of Beijing has been the major global story of the new century.
But the very breadth of that ascent and the bland labels of the areas
where it has edged toward dominance — trade, infrastructure, finance,
tech — have served to mask the nature of the system China brings with
it. That system is control… Now it appears to be Hong Kong’s turn to
feel the heat of a greater power forcing it into conformity — but China’s freest city won’t give in without a fight.”
Feliz Solomon, Time
“Only a fool would predict a happy ending to the Hong Kong story, but it
is also foolish to assume that history will follow a predictable
course. And just as Michnik’s most famous statement in Letters From Prison was that Poles should practice acting ‘as if they were free’ even while living in an unfree land, there is much to be said for the people of Hong Kong now acting, despite all the logical reasons to feel hopeless, as if there is hope. As I watch the inspiring images coming out of the city right now, that seems to be just what they are doing.”
Jeffrey Wassertrom, The Atlantic
Both sides also see the timing as problematic for China:
“This is not a good time for Xi Jinping to have to put down a revolt of his own making.
The US is fighting a trade war with China, and a brutal suppression of
democracy activists might swing even Trump’s opponents into supporting
tariffs as a rebuke. Both the US and Europe are isolating Huawei, a
Chinese telecom giant… a new fight over Hong Kong will remind everyone
as to what’s at stake in that fight, too. If Xi orders another
Tiananmen-style assault on civilians, it might cut China off from the
markets it needs.”
Ed Morrissey, Hot Air
“The Chinese government maintains it is not afraid of a trade war but
there are already signs that the economy is continuing to slow. As more
US businesses begin to look at investments outside of China, Hong Kong’s role as the country’s most economically liberal city is more important than ever.”
Ben Westcott and Steven Jiang, CNN
Many are urging President Trump to take a stand, and warning of the erosion of liberal democratic principles globally:
“With all the pressing foreign policy challenges already on its plate,
it would be easy for the Trump administration to look the other way on
Hong Kong’s plight, especially given the fraught relations with China on
trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea and more. But, aside from the moral and legal reasons for supporting the Hong Kong people’s cause, there are strategic considerations
as well. The fates of Hong Kong and Taiwan have been inextricably
linked ever since Deng promulgated his ‘one country, two systems’
formula for both… Taking a strong stand in support of Hong Kong’s
people, even without a formal legal obligation, would greatly reaffirm
Washington’s commitment to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act and
other congressional declarations of deep U.S. ties with Taiwan. And it
is surely the right thing to do for Hong Kong.”
Joseph Bosco, The Hill
“The world owes these people its attention. The State Department and
some in Congress have spoken up. But Donald Trump has so far said
nothing, though the U.S. has considerable investment in Hong Kong.
Speaking the truth about Hong Kong won’t jeopardize a trade deal with
Mr. Xi, who will only sign something in his own interests. Mr. Trump
might even improve the chances of a good deal by calling out China’s
failure to keep its commitment to Britain and Hong Kong. Mr. Xi wants to
expand China’s influence by narrowing the space for democratic
self-government across the globe. An American President’s duty is to push back and expand the scope for liberty.”
Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal
“Throughout the 1980s the free world was politically united and morally confident:
It believed in its liberal-democratic values, in their universality,
and in the immorality of those who sought to abridge or deny them. It
also wasn’t afraid to speak out. When Ronald Reagan called the Soviet
Union ‘the focus of evil in the modern world,’ one prominent liberal
writer denounced him as ‘primitive.’ But it was such rhetoric that gave
courage to dissidents and dreamers on the other side of the wall…
“Why does Trump have next to nothing to say about the robbery of rights
in Hong Kong? Because, as far as he’s concerned, it’s a domestic Chinese
affair… All this means that Xi can dispose of the Hong Kong
demonstrators as he likes without fear of outside consequences. Under
Trump, Uncle Sam might be happy to threaten tariffs one day and promise
to make a deal the next. But he no longer puts up his fists in defense
of Lady Liberty.”
Bret Stephens, New York Times
“Freedom is not merely the ability to buy and sell goods at minimum
regulation and a low tax rate, variables that are readily picked up by
economic freedom indices. Freedom is also about the narratives people
live by and the kind of future they imagine for themselves. Both of
these are greatly affected by the legitimacy and durability of their
political institutions… Circa 2019, Hong Kong is a study in the creeping
power and increasing sophistication of autocracy… What will happen next
in Hong Kong, I do not know. But right now, I would bet on the Chinese
Communist Party over the protesters. That too is a statement about liberty in the modern world.”
Tyler Cowen, Bloomberg
Residents of Hong Kong write:
“In
the past, Hong Kong had distinguished itself on the basis of wealth:
Hong Kong was rich, while the rest of China was struggling to bring its
population out of poverty. However, over the twenty years since the
handover in 1997, as Hong Kong’s economy has drifted and China’s boomed,
that distinction has failed to hold. Pride rooted in materialism has
been replaced by a deeper pride among Hong Kongers, based around the
notion of ‘Hong Kong Core Values’, those rights and freedoms enjoyed by
Hong Kong that distinguish it from the rest of China…
“Hong Kong Core Values include: a lively and unfettered media, the right
to participate in the electoral and governing process, freedom to
criticise the government, rule of law and due process, an independent
judiciary, and, of course, the right to protest. ‘Hong Kong core values’
has become the answer to the question: ‘What does it mean to be a Hong
Konger?’ The current proposed extradition law, by blurring the line
between the Hong Kong and mainland justice systems, is seen as another
attack on Hong Kong core values… And by taking to the streets, they were
expressing their dissatisfaction by exercising of one of those key
rights and freedoms: I am a Hong Konger, therefore I protest.”
Antony Dapiran, The Guardian
“In a city where so much is still named after Queen Victoria, Hong Kong
was a pawn in the 19th-century struggle between China and the conquering
powers of the West. Its people embody all the harmonious contradictions
that have made Hong Kong what it is: a place that forged its own path
in the shadows of colonial history and China’s imperial ambitions… From
Hong Kong’s most recent protest, a rallying cry has emerged. It is a
unified shout to safeguard Hong Kong’s unique identity and position in
the modern world, to not let forces beyond its borders shape its destiny
anymore. As the noose tightens around Hong Kong, what is at stake is
more than anything politics can define. The people are fighting to
preserve the essence of what it means to be a ‘Hongkonger’… As the
protests this week and the ongoing fight for human rights have proved, this ‘Hong Kongness’ is a fiery identity that will not be silenced without noise.”
Hana Meihan Davis, Washington Post

POLITICO PLAYBOOK
POLITICO Playbook: And the next White House press secretary is …
By ANNA PALMER, JAKE SHERMAN and DANIEL LIPPMAN
06/14/2019 05:58 AM EDT
DRIVING THE DAY
IRAN LATEST — “In Gulf of Oman, Tankers Are Struck Again, Raising Fears of Wider Conflict,” by NYT’s David Kirkpatrick, Richard Pérez-Peña and Stanley Reed: “Explosions crippled two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday in what the United States called attacks by Iran, raising alarms about immediate security and potential military conflict in a vital passageway for a third of the world’s petroleum. …
“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that American intelligence agencies had concluded Tehran was behind the disabling of both ships. … The most compelling evidence to support Mr. Pompeo’s claim is full-motion video footage taken by a Navy P-8 surveillance plane of an Islamic Revolutionary Guards patrol boat pulling up alongside the Kokuka Courageous, one of the stricken ships, a few hours after the initial explosion, and removing what American analysts believe was a limpet mine, a United States official said after the secretary’s statement.
“The patrol boat, with a crew of about a dozen aboard, removed the mine in broad daylight and zoomed away, blending in with other Revolutionary Guards boats in the area, according to the official’s account of what the video showed.”
— WAPO: “U.S. officials said several nations are consulting about how to respond. One option may be to provide military escorts for commercial tankers moving through the strait, one official said, although no decision has been made. … The U.S. military has dispatched a P-8 Poseidon, an anti-ship, anti-submarine and surveillance aircraft, to the area in response to the incident, a defense officials said.”
— Centcom statement: “[Thursday’s] attacks are a clear threat to international freedom of navigation and freedom of commerce. … The United States has no interest in engaging in a new conflict in the Middle East. However, we will defend our interests.” Full statement … Video
IRAN RESPONDS via Reuters: “‘We are responsible for ensuring the security of the Strait and we have rescued the crew of those attacked tankers in the shortest possible time,’ Radio quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi as saying. ‘Obviously, accusing Iran for such a suspicious and unfortunate incident is the simplest and the most convenient way for [U.S. Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo and other U.S. officials. These accusations are alarming.’” Reuters
THE JOB OF WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY has obviously changed a ton under President DONALD TRUMP. The allure of the press briefing is gone — clearly the president doesn’t have an interest in someone at the podium every day. After all, he sets his own narrative on Twitter and in his almost daily remarks on camera. Even though she all but stopped the press briefing, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS transcended the press secretary role, becoming a close adviser to the president on almost every issue. It will be interesting to see how the next inhabitant of the job shapes the role — especially during a campaign season. More from Andrew Restuccia
DEBRA SAUNDERS of the Las Vegas Review-Journal put these odds on the next White House press secretary: Hogan Gidley: 4/1 … Steven Groves: 7/1 … Alyssa Farah: 8/1 … Kellyanne Conway: 20/1 … Jeanine Pirro: 55/1 … Rudy Giuliani: 250/1 … Vacant: 19/1
SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI appointed eight Democrats to negotiate changes to the USMCA with USTR ROBERT LIGHTHIZER:
— THE CHAIR: Ways and Means Chairman Richie Neal (D-Mass.)
— DRUG PRICING: Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.)
— LABOR: Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) and Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.).
— ENVIRONMENT: Rep. Susan Bonamici (D-Ore.) and Rep. John Larson (D-Conn.).
— ENFORCEMENT: Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.)
ALL WE KEEP HEARING from House Democratic leadership — and, in fact, PELOSI herself — is that the USMCA will not get a vote unless the treaty negotiations are reopened with Mexico and Canada to ensure stringent enforcement. Period. The leadership tells us there won’t be a side deal. The White House has, for the most part, brushed this off as chest beating, and doubts Pelosi’s sincerity. But look at who Pelosi put on the enforcement team: DeLauro, one of her closest allies.
Good Friday morning. NANCY PELOSI lost her bet to Canadian PM JUSTIN TRUDEAU when the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors last night, 114-110 in Oakland. Pelosi told reporters yesterday it was easier for her to pick a gift because she was choosing from just one state, while Trudeau had to choose gifts from the whole country.
THE POLITICS OF THE NBA … WILL TRUMP invite the Raptors to the White House to celebrate their victory? Would they attend?
NOTE: We did not get a single email defending the president’s view that it’s standard operating procedure to take opposition research from foreign governments. And, believe us, we get lots of emails.
Senate Majority Leader MITCH MCCONNELL weighed in on the president’s comments that he would accept campaign help from foreign countries. He told Fox News’ LAURA INGRAHAM last night that “’They just can’t let it go, Laura. … I said weeks ago, case closed. We got the Mueller report, the only objective evaluation that will be conducted. …
“McConnell said Democrats love to keep bringing up the 2016 presidential campaign, keeping them from passing any legislation. He also accused Democrats of trying to ‘harass’ the president, borrowing from Trump’s own lexicon. ‘He gets picked at every day over every different aspect of it,’ McConnell said of Trump. ‘But the fundamental point is that they are trying to keep the 2016 election alive and the investigation alive when the American people have heard enough.’” POLITICO

86% of AARP members support the administration’s proposed rule to reform the rebate system in Medicare Part D, according to a nationwide Morning Consult survey. THE BEST LOUISE LINTON PROFILE YET … L.A. MAGAZINE … (with a photo of her swimming in the rain, and a posed one with gloves that look like the gloves) “How many people did you invite [to your wedding]?” Two hundred maybe? Contrary to popular opinion, I’m not a bridezilla. I’m not a frilly-type girl who cares much about flower napkins. Steven was more concerned about those things than I was. …
“What’s your social life like in D.C.? Did you host a lot of dinner parties? No, we are notoriously the only couple that doesn’t do D.C. society dinner parties. I do very small ones with good friends like Mike and Susan Pompeo. I tell him, Mike, if you come over wearing a tie, I’m going to send you home. We’re doing bad jeans and bad sweater night, OK, and we’re cooking together, and we’re hanging out casual style. He’s such great fun. We did one dinner party once to celebrate our birthdays. …
“But you have incredible access to the people who do make those decisions. Are you ever tempted to use it? I know you’re a supporter of gay rights. Does it bother you that the Trump administration supports a measure that allows landlords and businesses to discriminate against LGBTQ people? Look, all of my besties are gay. I did the Pride Run last year and again this year. Stormchasers was a sponsor! So…I’m caught between a rock and a hard place with these questions. Either I can express my beliefs and be at odds with my husband and his boss and get in trouble that way, or I can decline to comment and be in hot water with everyone else. Sucks either way.
“I very much respect my husband and the president of the United States, but I am an individual with my own beliefs and views. You should measure me by my actions, the friends I keep and the charities I support, not by the politics of my husband. It’s like walking a tightrope of dental floss in high heels and trying not to fall left or right. I’m just trying to walk the line in a way that isn’t going to piss anybody off. …
“Donald Trump Jr. is not in the administration. He’s a big advocate of big-game hunting—lions and elephants. Do you feel uncomfortable going to dinner with him? (Long pause.) Yes, I feel uncomfortable.” L.A. Magazine

2020 WATCH — SOFT SUPPORT FOR BIDEN IN IOWA … NYT’S KATIE GLUECK: “Interviews with Democratic Party officials across Iowa, and with nearly two dozen voters attending the former vice president’s five events here this week, reveal a candidate who enjoys deep reservoirs of respect and good will.
“But officials and voters also indicate his early lead is driven in part by name ID, nostalgia for the Obama years and strategic calculations about how to defeat President Trump, rather than primarily by enthusiasm for his campaign vision, which some struggled to define beyond calling it a return to pre-Trump normalcy and ‘dignity.’” NYT
— DEM DEBATE 101, via our in-house debates guru Zach Montellaro: “The stage for the first round of Democratic presidential primary debates will be set later today at noon, per a campaign source. The 20 qualified candidates will be divided across two nights, June 26 and 27, for the first primetime gathering of (most) of the 2020 hopefuls. But unlike the Republican debates in 2016, there will be no ‘kiddie table.’ The stages will be drawn randomly, with top-tier candidates — those polling at or above 2 percent — divided evenly and randomly across both nights and those polling below that mark also divided evenly and randomly.”
— HERE’S WHO MADE THE FIRST DEBATE, per the DNC:Michael Bennet, Joe Biden, Bill de Blasio, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris, John Hickenlooper, Jay Inslee, Amy Klobuchar, Beto O’Rourke, Tim Ryan, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson, Andrew Yang
— NOTE WHO DIDN’T MAKE IT: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, a late entry into the race but nonetheless a more significant political figure than some of those who will be on stage.

MICHAEL KRUSE for POLITICO Magazine: “The Escalator Ride That Changed America”: “Four years ago, Donald Trump stepped onto an escalator in the atrium of Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York and began descending into a lobby packed with cameras. It’s safe to say the 10 or so seconds that followed are the most consequential escalator ride in American history.”
TODAY’S CRAZIEST STORY … AP’S RAPHAEL SATTER in LONDON: “Experts: Spy used AI-generated face to connect with targets”: “Katie Jones sure seemed plugged into Washington’s political scene. The 30-something redhead boasted a job at a top think tank and a who’s-who network of pundits and experts, from the centrist Brookings Institution to the right-wing Heritage Foundation. She was connected to a deputy assistant secretary of state, a senior aide to a senator and the economist Paul Winfree, who is being considered for a seat on the Federal Reserve.
“But Katie Jones doesn’t exist, The Associated Press has determined. Instead, the persona was part of a vast army of phantom profiles lurking on the professional networking site LinkedIn. And several experts contacted by the AP said Jones’ profile picture appeared to have been created by a computer program.” AP
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO HMM … WAPO’S JONATHAN O’CONNELL, ALICE CRITES and DAVID FAHRENTHOLD: “President Trump’s company has quietly sold one of his last remaining properties in California — a 5,400-square-foot Beverly Hills mansion that county records show was purchased by a corporate entity linked to an Indonesian billionaire and Trump business partner.
“A deed registered with L.A. County on May 31 shows that Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., signed the property over to Hillcrest Asia Ltd., a company registered in the British Virgin Islands. The price tag: $13.5 million, nearly double what Trump paid for the house when he bought it in 2007.
“The purchaser address listed on the deed is a Beverly Hills condominium owned by a firm belonging to Hary Tanoesoedibjo, a billionaire media executive who ran for vice president of Indonesia in 2014. He is Trump’s business partner on two projects in Indonesia — a resort on the island of Bali and a golf course and resort in the forests of West Java, south of the capital city of Jakarta. Tanoesoedibjo has said he expects that the projects will be worth more than $500 million when completed.” WaPo

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION — “Emails: Trump official consulting climate-change rejecters,” by AP’s Ellen Knickmeyer and Seth Borenstein: “The request from William Happer, a member of the National Security Council, is included in emails from 2018 and 2019 that were obtained by the Environmental Defense Fund under the federal Freedom of Information Act and provided to The Associated Press. That request was made this past March to policy advisers with the Heartland Institute, one of the most vocal challengers of mainstream scientific findings that emissions from burning coal, oil and gas are damaging the Earth’s atmosphere.” AP

Two of the candidates who are struggling for support — Home Secretary Sajid Javid and Health Secretary Matt Hancock — met to discuss their options after Johnson took a huge lead in the race for the Conservative Party leadership in the first round of voting. Hancock was weighing up whether to pull out and throw his support behind another candidate.” Bloomberg

86% of AARP members support the administration’s proposed rule to reform the rebate system in Medicare Part D, according to a nationwide Morning Consult survey. Additionally, the vast majority of AARP members (73%) support the proposed rule even after being told it may increase premiums by $3 – $6 per month, since savings at the pharmacy counter would more than offset premium increases. For example, a senior with diabetes taking five medicines, including insulin, could save nearly $900 a year, according to Avalere. However, AARP gets $4.5B from health insurance companies and is lobbying against this policy. If their members support this proposed rule, really fighting for?

Iranian Aggression Reaches Boiling Point Everything you need to know about the Gulf of Oman attacks on two tankers almost certainly staged by Iranian proxies, from Tom Rogan at The Washington Examiner: “Regardless, this attack fits comfortably with the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps penchant for thinly deniable action. Suffering deep financial losses due to escalating U.S. sanctions, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps wants to pressure the international community into restraining the Trump administration’s maximum pressure strategy. Iran will hope that this attack is sufficiently calibrated to avoid clear evidence of its culpability and thus avoid U.S. retaliation. In that, it is designed as a halfway measure between doing nothing and inviting U.S. retaliation by overtly attempting to shut down the Strait of Hormuz… The question is how the U.S. and its allies should respond. The measure of this aggression will require some kind of significant response. Iran is now actively disrupting international oil markets and free passage of an arterial trade route. That cannot stand. But rightly neither is there much appetite in the U.S. or the region for a war. I suspect what we will now see is a significantly increased naval presence by the U.S. and its allies to protect transit routes.” Trump Missteps in Interview In an interview Wednesday with Clintonista George Stephanopolous, President Trump indicated that he would listen to dirt on his political opponents from foreign powers, and only go to the FBI if he “thought there was something wrong.” While doing so is not illegal (see Eugene Volokh’s great primer on the legal issues involved), it can’t be said to be a really great look for the President. Now, in response, the Democratic House is introducing legislation barring campaigns from sharing proprietary information with foreign countries. More from National Review here. Should Temples of Wokeness Get Taxpayer $? I say no! The recent debates over what conservatism in America should represent have not, imho, gotten to the real heart of why so many feel like we’ve been losing the culture wars for so long, and that’s mandatory support for the institutional left. We keep wrestling over how to deal the downstream effects, but fail to hunt for solutions to stop the problem at its source. Enter, the debate over the Higher Education Act. “Conservatives once laughed at radical campus politics, imagining that upon impact with the ‘real world,’ blue-haired social justice warrior activists would have to grow up and confront the hard realities of the capitalist marketplace. Instead, what’s becoming increasingly clear is that academic leftism is metastasizing off-campus, spreading into some of the world’s largest corporations as well as institutions of culture, with graduated millennial employees as its carriers. While the right wrestles with how to deal with big technology companies’ hostility to conservative voices on their platforms, the source of that enmity goes mostly unremarked upon: Google’s highly credentialed workforce has roughly the personal politics of a faculty lounge. Unless the right gets serious about the role massive taxpayer sponsorship plays in keeping the institutional left bankrolled, recent debates between traditional small-l liberal conservatives and those who want to use the power of government to advance communitarian ends are irrelevant to the actual political battleground. Libertarians, populists, and traditionalists should all be able to agree that government shouldn’t throw its weight heavily in favor of the left in the culture wars, yet that’s exactly what’s happening in education and many other key areas of policy.” Fashion Moment of the Week I know summer’s just begun, but oh my has Celine (no more accent) caught my attention for Fall 2019. Despite 20 candidates, the Democrats are down to a five-person race for now Posted: 14 Jun 2019 05:29 AM PDT California is the Democratic Party in a nutshell… a very large nutshell. The state is not only the most populous and richest, but it also tends to set trends for progressivism. The latest poll from California shows five candidates in double-digits while everyone else is registering no better than three percent. Things can change quickly […] The post Despite 20 candidates, the Democrats are down to a five-person race for now appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Dave Rubin on big tech: ‘They want to fear good people into not saying what they think’ Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:18 PM PDT As our EIC said before, conservatives are being purged, silenced, and censored by big tech. It’s not even a conspiracy theory anymore. It’s easily demonstrable by the actions of progressive tech companies, which include all the big names, the leftist mainstream media, and their Democratic handlers. One doesn’t have to look too far to come […] The post Dave Rubin on big tech: ‘They want to fear good people into not saying what they think’ appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Very nice text animation of John 1:1-5 Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:54 PM PDT Under normal circumstances we wouldn’t feature a short video that didn’t have any commentary or expression of opinions about an aspect of religion in the world, but this video was exceptional. Simple. Pure. To the point. One of the biggest parts of our goals for this site is to expose as many people as possible […] The post Very nice text animation of John 1:1-5 appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
U.S. Navy releases smoking gun video of Iran removing unexploded limpet mine from oil tanker’s hull Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:23 PM PDT If there were any doubts Iran is responsible for the attacks on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, a new report should put those doubts to rest. The United States has video of Iran removing unexploded mines from the side of one of the ships that was hit. The Iranian ship can be […] The post U.S. Navy releases smoking gun video of Iran removing unexploded limpet mine from oil tanker’s hull appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
And then there were 20… Posted: 13 Jun 2019 07:54 PM PDT Four Democrats are unofficially out of the race. One can argue they were never really in it. Others may say the majority of those among the 20 invited to the first two-day round of debates in two weeks aren’t really in the race, either. We’ll know soon enough. Iran doesn’t want war. They want rumors of war. Posted: 13 Jun 2019 07:21 PM PDT Today’s escalation of attacks in the Gulf of Oman in which Iran is being accused of attacking two oil tankers, possibly with torpedoes, should draw serious concern from those who rely on oil imports or exports, which is essentially everyone. If Iran continues down this path, the United States and others will have no choice […] The post Iran doesn’t want war. They want rumors of war. appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Brazil: Lesbian couple accused of castrating and murdering own child Posted: 13 Jun 2019 05:16 PM PDT This is a major news story in South America, where communities are in shock over the grotesque murder of an nine year old child. Vox: Bernie 2020 is just Bernie 2016 plus Trump Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:03 PM PDT Consistency in messaging is an important quality for candidates running for government offices. It’s also rare; in an age where every word uttered by a candidate is captured, cataloged, and critiqued, keeping one’s story straight is challenge. 06/14/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Judicial List; After Sarah; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on Jun 14, 2019 08:29 am Hello, it’s June 14, a Friday, the day of the week when I pass along an inspirational quotation. This morning’s quote comes from President Trump, who turns 73 today. Are you curious what Trumpism I have up my sleeve? Good. But first, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * 2020 Dems Mum on Secret List of Judicial Nominees. Progressive groups are compiling lists of liberal judges qualified to fill openings if Donald Trump is defeated next year. Susan Crabtree explores the issues of transparency surrounding this initiative. D.C.’s New Parlor Game: Who Will Replace Sarah Sanders? Phil Wegmann reports on the White House press secretary’s departure. Trump Channels Sun Tzu in Confronting China. Steve Cortes writes that the president seems to be acting on advice from the legendary Chinese general. 2019 Budget Shows Deterioration, Not Improvement. Also in RCPolicy, No Labels has this primer. The Iran-Saudi Arabia Arms Race. In RealClearDefense, Daniel DePetris warns that U.S. weapons sales to Riyadh could destabilize the already volatile region. The 10 Most Hated Enemies in U.S. History. Brandon Christensen compiled this list (in RealClearHistory, of course). * * * Donald John Trump is not considered an eloquent man. Nor is he known for trying to forge bonds of friendship between Americans and people of other nations. If you said that the 45th U.S. president has put the “bully” back in the “bully pulpit,” you’d get little argument from me. Yet eight days ago, while speaking on the picturesque French coast that was the scene of the D-Day invasion, it was this president — the one who wants to build a wall between the United States and Mexico, who insulted Canada’s prime minister, and who regularly disses NATO — who went ever further than his predecessors in lauding the U.S. allies who landed on the beaches with the Americans 75 years earlier. “Then came dawn,” Trump said, setting the scene on June 6, 1944. “The enemy who had occupied these heights saw the largest naval armada in the history of the world. Just a few miles offshore were 7,000 vessels bearing 130,000 warriors. They were the citizens of free and independent nations, united by their duty to their compatriots and to millions yet unborn. “There were the British, whose nobility and fortitude saw them through the worst of Dunkirk and the London Blitz — the full violence of Nazi fury was no match for the full grandeur of British pride,” Trump noted. “There were the Canadians, whose robust sense of honor and loyalty compelled them to take up arms alongside Britain from the very, very beginning. “There were the fighting Poles, the tough Norwegians, and the intrepid Aussies,” he continued. “There were the gallant French commandos, soon to be met by thousands of their brave countrymen ready to write a new chapter in the long history of French valor. “And, finally, there were the Americans. They came from the farms of a vast heartland, the streets of glowing cities, and the forges of mighty industrial towns. Before the war, many had never ventured beyond their own community. Now they had come to offer their lives half a world from home.” Yes, sir, they did. But it was singling out “British pride” and “French valor,” along with “fighting Poles,” “tough Norwegians,” “intrepid Aussies” that was a nice and unexpected touch. And that is your quote of the week. Happy birthday, Mr. President. Carl M. MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: How Trump built the Outrage Wheel
Sunday marks the anniversary
of Donald Trump – four years ago – descending that escalator and
stunning the political world by saying that Mexico sends rapists across
the border.
And it’s been pretty much the central theme of his four years on the political stage:
Say/do something controversial… Country reacts in outrage…
Say/do another thing… Country reacts in outage, forgetting that first
controversy.
Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
Consider last week’s dispute: Trump’s “Blazing Saddles” move on Mexico tariffs (“Nobody move … or the United States gets it”).
Remember that?
KENA BETANCUR/AFP/Getty Images
This week ends with another outrage: Trump admitting that he’d accept dirt – again – from a foreign government.
This controversy-to-controversy-to-controversy cycle
has been one of the president’s biggest weaknesses.
It’s why, after all, his approval rating is stuck in the low 40s when the unemployment rate is at 3.6 percent.
But it’s also one his strengths: The controversy/outrage always changes, and it becomes easy to forget what last week’s controversy/outrage was.
The political world still doesn’t know how to handle this wheel of outrage.
And Democrats don’t know, either…
The Mueller report plays out over the last 48 hours
If you want to retell what’s in the Mueller report, all you need to do is interview the president of the United States.
First came President Trump’s
admission to ABC that he’d accept dirt from a foreign government again,
underscoring the report’s Volume I about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election and how the Trump campaign welcomed that help.
And now in the latest installment of ABC’s interview with Trump, the president said he was never going to fire Robert Mueller – the subject matter that’s in Volume II of the report on whether
there was obstruction of justice.
But you have to read the entire exchange.
TRUMP:
No special counsel should have ever been appointed. You know why?
‘Cause there was no crime. They had no– [cross talk] excuse me, they
had no evidence of crime.
STEPHANOPOULOS:
He lays out a lot of evidence, including the episode where your White
House Counsel Don McGahn, you tell him, “Mueller has to go.” You call
him twice and say,
“Mueller has to go. Call me when it’s done.”
TRUMP:
Okay, now the story on that very simply: number one, I was never gonna
fire Mueller. I never suggested firing Mueller. Do I think –
STEPHANOPOULOS: That’s not what he says.
TRUMP:
Excuse —I don’t care what he says. It doesn’t matter. That was to show
everyone what a good counsel he was. But we had a business — wait a
minute —
STEPHANOPOULOS: Why would Don McGahn lie — why would he lie under oath– why would he lie under oath to Robert Mueller?
TRUMP:
Because he wanted to make himself look like a good lawyer. Or, or he
believed it because I would constantly tell anybody that would listen,
including you, including the
media, that Robert Mueller was conflicted. Robert Mueller had a total
conflict of interest.
STEPHANOPOULOS: He has to go.
TRUMP: I never — I didn’t say that.
After reading that, is there any doubt that the best advice Trump ever got was to avoid a sitdown interview with Mueller?
Biden pledges not to accept foreign interference
Yesterday
we asked how Democrats would respond to Trump’s admission that he’d be willing to use foreign interference again.
Play by the rules and possibly lose? Or play the same game your opponent is playing?
Well, Joe Biden released his answer in
a new video, per NBC’s Mike Memoli.
“Folks,
this is simple. American elections should be decided by the American
people and not by Russian or any other foreign power,” Biden says.
“I won’t be part of any attempt to undermine our democracy or public confidence in our institutions.”
TWEET OF THE DAY: That’s SOME subtweet!
2020 VISION: The debate field is set
The Democratic National Committee on Thursday named the 20 participants who qualified for the first Dem debates on June 26-27.
In alphabetical order:
Michael Bennet
Joe Biden
Cory Booker
Pete Buttigieg
Julian Castro
Bill de Blasio
John Delaney
Tulsi Gabbard
Kirsten Gillibrand
Kamala Harris
John Hickenlooper
Jay Inslee
Amy Klobuchar
Beto O’Rourke
Tim Ryan
Bernie Sanders
Eric Swalwell
Elizabeth Warren
Marianne Williamson
Andrew Yang.
Two elected Democratic politicians didn’t make the cut: Montana Gov. Steve Bullock and Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass.
“If I had
to choose between chasing 100,000 donors or getting healthcare for
100,000 Montanans — well, that’s the easiest decision I’ll ever have to
make,” Bullock responded in a statement, referring
to his late entry into the 2020 field due to expanding Medicaid in his
state.
“While 20
candidates are on the debate stage in Miami, I will be talking directly
to voters about my record of passing progressive priorities in a state
Trump won, the importance of winning the places
we lost, and how we are going to beat Donald Trump once and for all.”
On the campaign trail today: Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand and Andrew Yang stump in New Hampshire… Beto O’Rourke is in South Carolina… Kamala Harris campaigns in Nevada… Julian Castro visits Iowa… And Pete Buttigieg holds a grassroots event in Alexandria, Va.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is… 94.
That’s the number of
days between Sarah Sanders’ last formal press briefing (on March 11)
and yesterday’s announcement that she will be leaving the White House.
The March 11 briefing was only the second such formal Q&A session of 2019.
The 94-day
gap nearly doubles the previous longest stretch without a White House
briefing during the Trump administration. The previous record was 42
days, between the January 28 and March 11 briefings.
THE LID: Say cheese
Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when special guest star Alex Seitz-Wald described why the 2020 candidates are spending so much time on … selfies?
ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss
In an exit interview,
Sarah Sanders told NBC News that she has no regrets about her tenure at the White House.
Can a candidate matter
even WITHOUT a debate spot?
POLITICO
notes how 2020 Democrats are taking trips to red states to talk about electability.
Progressive Dem Betsy Sweet
is in the race to take on Susan Collins.
