Good morning from Washington, where Democrats’ House majority makes
fiscal responsibility a heavier lift. In commentaries, David Ditch and
Justin Bogie explain why we’ve got to stop the ever-mounting debt. One
wonders how the spending spree would have been
greeted by America’s suffragettes, whose victory 100 years ago is cause
for a House celebration. Rachel del Guidice reports. Researcher and
author Dion Pierre visits the podcast to talk “neo-segregation” in
higher education. Plus: Jessica Francavilla on the

on socialism’s broken promise.

POLITICO Playbook: Scoop: Don Jr. to pen book … Inside Pelosi’s impeachment battle plan
By JAKE SHERMAN, ANNA PALMER and DANIEL LIPPMAN
05/22/2019 05:55 AM EDT
DRIVING THE DAY
PLAYBOOK SCOOP — DONALD TRUMP JR. has signed a book deal with Center Street Books, an imprint of the Hachette Book Group, for a book “that will focus on politics, current events and the future of the MAGA movement,” according to a source close to him. Publisher Rolf Zettersten and Center Street editorial director Kate Hartson negotiated the deal with attorney and literary agent Tom Winters, who represented the president’s son. The book is expected to publish late this year.
INSIDE PELOSI’S IMPEACHMENT PLAYBOOK … IF YOU’VE WATCHED SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI for any period of time in the majority, you know she has an uncanny ability to stay unflinchingly focused on a goal, without getting panicked or itchy or changing course. (Ironically, it’s a trait she shares with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell — though don’t bring that up with them or their friends.)
AT THE MOMENT, Pelosi’s goal is quite clear: to avoid rushing to impeach President DONALD TRUMP. If you talk to her allies, her advisers and people close to her, they’ll tell you she believes the impeachment route is an all-around loser right now.
PELOSI ALLIES firmly believe that if Democrats impeach TRUMP, they will lose the presidency and the House in 2020 — period. They also don’t believe Congress or the American public is behind impeachment at the moment. Further, they say that launching an inquiry that isn’t airtight could backfire as they pursue other legal options to extract documents from the White House.
HOUSE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS are keeping a very close eye on who comes out in favor of impeachment, but so far, they see mostly Judiciary Committee members who are living the day-to-day back-and-forth over document production and stonewalling, and progressives who have long been on the path to impeachment. More from Sarah Ferris and Laura Barrón-López on vulnerable Dems
Here is what Pelosi-world is thinking, and the points they are making privately:
— THEIR GO-THROUGH-THE-COURTS PLAY IS WORKING. House Democrats scored a big victory last week when a federal judge ruled that Mazars Group, Trump’s accounting firm, needed to hand over the president’s financial records. Pelosi and her team believe they will score other victories in court and ultimately get many of the documents they are seeking. Impeachment, many of them argue, is not a magical key to unlock a trove of documents. And there’s a fear, too, that a rush to impeachment could undermine some of these court efforts.
— THE LEADERSHIP TEAM IS WITH PELOSI. Yes, Reps. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) and Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) have called for impeachment, but notice who has not: Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.). And that’s important. The cracks at her leadership table are at the bottom, not the top.
— DEMOCRATS ARE PLANNING to move a package of contempt citations in June. That’s the next punishment they are meting out.
THERE IS, AT THE MOMENT, A REMARKABLE sense of unity atop the leadership. They recognize that the angst is rising in the rank and file. No one seems completely convinced Democrats can hold this position for 18 months. Yes, the majority of the caucus opposes impeachment at the moment — but for how long?
THE INTERNAL POLITICS ARE COMPLICATED. Democrats have been taken aback at how Trump has injected himself personally into the decisions to withhold documents and block testimony, which has corresponded with rising blood pressure among many of the rank and file.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR … TOP DEMOCRATS are absolutely convinced that if Trump defies a court order to fork over documents, then they will be forced to begin impeaching him.
Good Wednesday morning. PELOSI’S MESSAGE TODAY … JOHN BRESNAHAN and HEATHER CAYGLE: “Pelosi urges caution on impeachment as pressure builds”: “Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to hold the line — no impeachment. At least not yet. It’s a familiar message for Pelosi, who will deliver it once again at a closed-door meeting of House Democrats on Wednesday morning. But the gathering, which is members-only with no aides allowed, comes at a critical moment as a growing number of Democrats are ready to consider impeaching President Donald Trump.” POLITICO
WAPO’s JEFF STEIN and JOSH DAWSEY: “Confidential draft IRS memo says tax returns must be given to Congress unless president invokes executive privilege”: WaPo
THE LATEST ON THE BUDGET TALKS — “No miracle deal on budget as talks continue,” by Burgess Everett, Heather Caygle and John Bresnahan: “Congressional leaders and the Trump administration finished a round of breakneck budget talks on Tuesday with no resolution but a commitment to keep negotiating and try to clinch a debt and spending agreement that would avoid fiscal catastrophe.” POLITICO

NEW: R.I.P. INFRASTRUCTURE, with NANCY COOK … THREE WEEKS AGO, Democrats left the White House optimistic, but realistic, about the chances of an infrastructure bill. TRUMP had agreed to spend $2 trillion on a massive infrastructure package — aides said he was giddy about the high number — and the two sides were to meet again to figure out how to pay for it. Trump, Democrats said, would come up with the funding scheme, and, indeed, policy staffers at the National Economic Council, Treasury and OMB started to work on various proposals.
WELL, THIS WENT ABOUT AS WELL as any other infrastructure week. The White House is not going to present any plan to pay for rebuilding the nation’s roads and highways.
INSTEAD, the administration will ask DEMOCRATS to make the case for a $2 trillion package. The White House has identified roughly $1 trillion in spending cuts to pay for legislation — about as realistic a plan as saying this newsletter will fly you to the moon if you say abracadabra.
TO REALLY DRIVE THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN, Trump sent a letter to PELOSI and Senate Minority Leader CHUCK SCHUMER on Tuesday saying they should pass the USMCA before turning to infrastructure. The letter
PELOSI and SCHUMER released a statement, saying in part: “Three weeks ago, we were pleased to have had a productive meeting with the president, during which he agreed to a $2 trillion plan to rebuild America’s infrastructure and to provide ideas for pay-fors. On Wednesday, we look forward to hearing the president’s plan for how to pay for this package.”
THE PRESIDENT is scheduled to meet with Democratic lawmakers on infrastructure at 11:15 a.m. in the Cabinet Room.
WHO WILL THE W.H. LEG AFFAIRS BOSS BE? … TRUMP announced on Twitter on Tuesday night that Shahira Knight, the White House legislative affairs director, would be leaving. READ THE TEA LEAVES … This will be an important job for Trump to fill. There will be factions pulling him to the right, urging him to put a think-tanker in this job. BUT … Trump needs someone who can manage a rapidly deteriorating relationship with Capitol Hill Democrats.

TRADE WARS — FT: “U.S. companies face retaliation in China as trade war deepens,” by Don Weinland in Beijing: “Roughly 47 per cent of the members of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and a similar group based in Shanghai said that on top of recently imposed tariffs, they faced retaliation such as slower customs clearance, more inspections and delayed approvals for licences, according to a survey released on Wednesday.
“About a third of the 239 American companies surveyed said they were cancelling or delaying investments in China while about 40 per cent said they were considering relocating manufacturing facilities outside of China, with south-east Asia and Mexico among the favoured destinations. ‘Such strategy constitutes a rational choice for many companies to insulate themselves from the effects of tariffs while maintaining their ability to pursue domestic market opportunities,’ the report stated.” FT
2020 WATCH … FORMER TRUMP AIDE MICHAEL CAPUTO is contemplating a run for a House seat, he confirms. “I’ve never before wanted to run for public office, but I’m considering this seriously,” he told Playbook. The seat, New York’s 27th District, is held by pro-Trump Rep. Chris Collins, who was indicted last year for insider trading and lying to the FBI. “If Rep. Collins will not run, or cannot win, I cannot allow this seat to go to someone who has not supported the president 100 percent, from the beginning, in their bones,” Caputo says.
LATEST QUINNIPIAC PRESIDENTIAL POLL — Biden 35% (-3), Sanders 16 (+5), Warren 13 (+1), Harris 8 (-), Buttigieg 5 (-5).
— AMONG ‘VERY LIBERAL’ VOTERS: Warren 30%, Sanders 22, Biden 19, Harris 13, Buttigieg 6, O’Rourke 4.
— TRUMP’S NEGATIVES: The president is underwater with all voters by 19 percentage points. And he’s 14 points underwater on his signature issue — trade — with just 39% of voters viewing his policies positively, vs. 53% negatively.
— YIKES! … New York Mayor BILL DE BLASIO has a favorable rating of 8% and an unfavorable rating of 45% among all voters. The poll
— MARC CAPUTO: “Biden caps cash dash with big Florida haul”: “Joe Biden collected at least $1.7 million this week from two Florida fundraisers, underscoring the former vice president’s pull with big-dollar Democratic donors and his front-runner status in a crowded presidential primary.” POLITICO
TRUMP’S WEDNESDAY — The president will present the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor at 3:10 p.m. in the East Room. He will leave the White House at 6:20 p.m. en route to the Trump International Hotel for a meeting with supporters and to deliver remarks at a fundraiser. Afterward, he will return to the White House.

IRAN SABER-RATTLING LATEST — NAHAL TOOSI and DANIEL LIPPMAN: “Trump officials seek to placate Congress on Iran”: “Democrats, including House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel, pressed [Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo on whether the administration believes it can take military action against Iran under the existing Authorization of Use for Military Force issued by Congress following the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. … Engel at times cut off Pompeo, as did [Rep. Adam] Smith, leading to complaints from Republicans in the room …

NORTH KOREA ATTACKS BIDEN … BLOOMBERG: “As the 2020 U.S. presidential race heats up, North Korea’s official KCNA news agency has jumped into the fray, calling aspiring Democratic contender Joe Biden a ‘snob bereft of elementary quality as human being.’
“‘He is self-praising himself as being the most popular presidential candidate. This is enough to make a cat laugh,’ the agency writes in a commentary piece that also denigrates Biden for his university grades and for falling asleep at a speech by President Barack Obama in 2011.” Bloomberg
HMM — “Legal Fees Mount for Republican Party, Trump Campaign,” by WSJ’s Julie Bykowicz: The RNC and Mr. Trump’s campaign paid about eight times more between January 2017 and last month than the $2 million the Obama campaign and the DNC paid in a similar time period of his first term.”
TRUMP VS. CHINA … NYT’S ANA SWANSON and EDWARD WONG: “The Trump administration is considering limits to a Chinese video surveillance giant’s ability to buy American technology … the latest attempt to counter Beijing’s global economic ambitions. The move would effectively place the company, Hikvision, on a United States blacklist. It also would mark the first time the Trump administration punished a Chinese company for its role in the surveillance and mass detention of Uighurs, a mostly Muslim ethnic minority.” NYT

Institutional investors accounted for 17 percent of the $4bn in sector transactions in 2018, up from 9 percent of $1.2bn transactions in 2013. …
“As investors looking for yield have piled in, activists and academics say that lot rents on private-equity-owned properties are rising sharply — as much as 15 percent over two years in some parks … Consumer advocates say that can result in tenants with few means having to pay for costly moves, or even to abandon their trailers altogether.” FT
HAPPENING TODAY … Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school, Eastern Virginia Medical School, is holding a news conference at 10:30 a.m. to announce the findings of an independent review conducted by law firm McGuireWoods into how a racist photo was published in the 1984 school yearbook.

VALLEY TALK — “How San Francisco broke America’s heart,” by WaPo’s Karen Heller: “For decades, this coruscating city of hills, bordered by water on three sides, was a beloved haven for reinvention, a refuge for immigrants, bohemians, artists and outcasts. It was the great American romantic city, the Paris of the West. No longer. In a time of scarce consensus, everyone agrees that something has rotted in San Francisco.
“Conservatives have long loathed it as the axis of liberal politics and political correctness, but now progressives are carping, too. They mourn it for what has been lost, a city that long welcomed everyone and has been altered by an earthquake of wealth. It is a place that people disparage constantly, especially residents.” WaPo

Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Impeachment On Saturday, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), tweeted that “President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.” Twitter “More Democrats are calling — and more loudly — for impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump after his latest defiance of Congress by blocking his former White House lawyer [Don McGahn] from testifying on Tuesday.” AP News From the Left The left is disturbed by Trump’s expansive assertion of executive privilege, and generally supports impeachment. “As attorneys sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States, we are deeply concerned by Trump’s blanket assertion of executive privilege and refusal to submit to Congressional oversight, and his Administration’s evident preparations for war with Iran. Political strategists have paid a lot of attention to the consequences of impeaching him in the House. But what about the consequences of not impeaching him?… “They include… Engendering disrespect at home for the system of checks and balances that our Founding Fathers carefully constructed to insure that our free society would never be subject to a tyrannical, authoritarian ruler; Enabling this administration to continue to ignore longstanding domestic norms and law… [and] Countenancing this president’s continued gross disregard for veracity and his penchant for obfuscation, deception and outright lies.” Jonathan Granoff and Michael L. Prigoff, The Hill “The Trump administration is now refusing to comply with perfectly lawful subpoenas issued by duly constituted committees of the U.S. If this president is allowed to get away with such defiance, why wouldn’t the next president do the same — or go even further? What good is a system of checks and balances if officials decline to use the tools that the framers of the Constitution so painstakingly crafted?… Democrats’ options for avoiding impeachment are narrowing. Amash’s politically dangerous stand is a reminder that elected officials, regardless of party, are supposed to put duty first.” Eugene Robinson, Washington Post “In 2015, [Amash], along with ‘some of most hard-line GOP lawmakers’ — as Politico noted at the time — founded the House Freedom Caucus to push for laws that advocate very conservative positions… Amash has also long received high ratings from right-wing groups like the Conservative Review, which gave Amash an ‘A rating’ this year for ‘supporting conservative principles’ 90% of the time, placing him ahead of hardliners like Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz… Amash is clearly a dyed-in-the-wool conservative. And as such, he has put the US Constitution over partisan politics or loyalty to Trump.” Dean Obeidallah, CNN Yet “Amash isn’t likely to be a bellwether for his party. He is a libertarian who has long staked out his own positions on issues such as gay marriage, government surveillance and Mr. Trump’s entry restrictions on Muslim travelers. But what is remarkable about Mr. Amash’s stand is how much tougher it is than that of the House’s Democratic leaders to date.” Cristian Farias, New York Times “Pelosi is right about impeachment under present conditions. But what she and the Democrats ought to be doing is changing the conditions… First, they absolutely have to get Robert Mueller up there as soon as possible… Second, if they can’t get any witnesses from the administration to come before them, produce expert witnesses of their own. Get a parade of legal and constitutional scholars up there… Third, they need a much stronger rhetoric… Democrats have a big power: the power of the gavel. They need to use it.” Michael Tomasky, Daily Beast Many argue, “President Trump has lied repeatedly to the American people about the existence of a plot by a foreign government to interfere in a democratic election, and about his campaign’s connections to that plot; he repeatedly sought to abuse his power by impeding or doing away with an investigation into his own behavior; and he pressed for groundless investigations into his political opponents… Delaying impeachment proceedings signals that the devastating material in the [Mueller] report is not really so devastating at all. The moral urgency of impeachment can only remain ripe for so long.” Quinta Jurecic, Lawfare Blog “While [Pelosi’s] let’s-wait-and-see approach has sated the base — and many members of her caucus — until now, with every passing day that the Trump administration stonewalls legislative attempts at oversight, her position becomes that much harder to hold. And, if Democrats were to lose a major legal fight in the coming weeks over their demands for more information and transparency from the Trump administration, it’s hard to see how Pelosi holds back the forces pushing for impeachment — no matter the potential political impacts on the party come 2020… There’s an itch for action — and Pelosi may not be able to keep her colleagues from scratching it much longer.” Chris Cillizza, CNN From the Right The right opposes impeachment, and argues that Trump has the right to prevent McGahn from testifying. “Impeachment allows Congress to overturn an election. That is a very, very big deal. The Constitution vests ultimate power in the people, and throwing out their choice is in a way the ultimate undemocratic act. What impeachment also is not is a midterm check of ‘fitness.’ It is not a constitutional pause for a referendum on how the president is doing. It is not a way to resolve differences of opinion, policy, or propriety… Impeachment is also not a way to bypass other investigative tools and allow a partisan House to poke around a president’s decisions, pre-election business deals, and personal life, or to amass info short of actual impeachable evidence as campaign dirt on the public dollar.” Peter Van Buren, The American Conservative “With the [Mueller] report’s release, the investigation moved from the legal realm to the political realm. And in the political realm, the president has a simple and effective case to make to the 99.6% of Americans who are not lawyers: They say I obstructed an investigation into something that didn’t happen? And they want to impeach me for that?” Byron York, Washington Examiner “Being ineloquent, untruthful, unstudied and undiplomatic are not in themselves impeachable crimes. After two years of intense investigation that has not produced further evidence, if Amash wants Trump out of office, he should run against him, or leave the Republican Party and support one of the 24 Democrats in the race. Steve Berman, The Resurgent “Having one or even two or three Republicans sign onto impeachment won’t make it bipartisan, and it won’t have any impact on a Senate removal vote at all. People tend to forget that five Democrats voted for three of the four articles of impeachment against Bill Clinton. That didn’t give the Clinton impeachment any ‘bipartisan’ gloss at all, nor did it convince Senate Democrats to remove Clinton, or even all of the Republican Senators, five of whom voted against removal.” Ed Morrissey, Hot Air Regarding McGahn, “[he] has every constitutional right not to appear, and this isn’t a close legal call… This isn’t a novel legal doctrine. For nearly 50 years, multiple administrations have held that Congress cannot compel the appearance of a close adviser to the President. That judgment has been backed by numerous legal memos… The view was reinforced and invoked by Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush… “The reason is rooted in the Constitution’s separation of powers and co-equal branches of government. The White House can’t compel a Member of Congress to visit the Oval Office, and likewise Congress can’t compel a President to appear on Capitol Hill. The same goes for senior White House advisers who are agents of the President and whose candid counsel he needs to fulfill his duties. Unlike cabinet officers who run departments, the only job of these advisers is to counsel the President. To allow Congress to haul presidential advisers to Capitol Hill would make the President subordinate to Congress and chill communications inside the White House.” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal “Everyone on Judiciary knows perfectly well that Congress can’t compel testimony from top presidential advisers except in the most extraordinary circumstances: The chief executive’s right to frank, confidential discussions with his staff is well-established. So Nadler’s bluster about how he’ll ‘go to court to secure’ McGahn’s appearance is just noise for the cameras. Then again, that’s all the testimony itself would be — a public spectacle telling no one anything new. With full White House permission, McGahn cooperated fully with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, and it’s all in Mueller’s report.” Editorial Board, New York Post “The Democrats want to talk to Don McGahn, and maybe they will ultimately prevail in court to get his testimony, but what’s the point? McGahn talked extensively to Mueller, and surely everything remotely damaging is already in the report… Congress has the report, and now it is up to it to decide. But it doesn’t want to. It’s too painful to admit that the Mueller report was a bust on Russia and that the obstruction material, while damaging to Trump, is hardly a slam dunk; that the public doesn’t support impeachment; that if the House goes through with it anyway, it will end with a whimper in the Senate; and that it’s better for Democrats to focus on beating Trump in 2020 than a forlorn impeachment.” Rich Lowry, National Review On the bright side… ‘They put people in a good mood’: Family of ducks live at this Florida car dealership. Good morning, Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day. At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day. You can listen live here. SHAMEFUL: House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy Helping China by Blocking Legislation What is so troubling is that the legislation McCarthy blocked is legislation that would curtail China’s ability to invest in and build American infrastructure. The Chinese are not only notorious for sub-par work on these sorts of things, but also of using their position in these situations to spy on other nations. It is one reason the Trump Administration has blocked Chinese efforts to build the 5G network in the United States — a network China could easily infiltrate if it builds the network. McCarthy, however, now has constituent interests in the form of a Chinese company whose owner is a donor to McCarthy. As the Washington Post notes the company is backed by the Chinese government. Good morning,Given a list of five countries to choose from 32% of voters named North Korea as the greatest threat to the National Security of the United States.
A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that 29% named Russia as the
greatest threat, 20% picked China, 15% Iran, and 5% Mexico. All
but Mexico were seen as at least somewhat of a threat by more than
seven-out-of-ten voters. North Korea was seen as a threat by 80%,
including 48% who see that country as a Very Serious threat. For Russia,
78% consider it a threat, including 43% who see it as a Very
Serious threat. Iran and China were close behind on this measure.Shifting to health care, 40% of Democratic voters at least somewhat favor a proposal to ban private health insurance companies.
The idea of requiring everybody to get their insurance and medical care
through the federal government is opposed by 37% of Democrats.Republican
voters oppose the plan by a 66% to 23% margin. Forty-seven percent
(47%) of Independents are opposed to such a ban while just 21% favor it.Among
all voters, 12% Strongly Favor the elimination of private health
insurance companies. Another 15% Somewhat Favor the idea. Men are more
likely than women to support the elimination of private health insurance
companies.Other data that focused on providing choice to patients found that just 18% were okay with banning private insurance companies. One reason for opposition to such a radical change may be the fact that seven-out-of-ten voters are happy with their existing health insurance coverage.Another factor may be that voters are looking to
increase the number of options available rather than restricting
choice. For example, 67% favor allowing every worker to choose between less expensive insurance and more take home pay or more expensive insurance and less take-home pay.Additionally,
65% support allowing people to choose between their existing health
insurance and buying the insurance available to government employees.
Fifty-nine percent (59%) support letting anybody buy insurance from

Well, This Is Awkward On Monday, California Sen. Kamala Harris announced an ambitious new plan to eliminate the (fake) gender wage gap, releasing “the most aggressive equal pay proposal in history.” Per Politico, here’s what her plan would do: “Companies would face a 1 percent profit fine for every 1 percent wage gap that they allow to exist in their ranks. The fines would total $180 billion in the first decade, according to the campaign‘s projections, with smaller takes in later years as companies come into compliance. The money would support paid family and medical leave under the FAMILY Act, a bill widely embraced by Democrats and sponsored by one of Harris’ rivals, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.).” “To avoid paying fines, businesses with 100 or more employees would have to achieve a new type of ‘equal pay certification’ every two years under a new federal program headed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The Harris campaign, in its announcement, said her plan would require employers to prove they’re not engaging in discrimination. The current system, by contrast, puts the burden on employees to prove individual cases of discrimination — a process that can take years and run up monstrous legal fees.” Only problem? Besides for the fact the gender pay gap demonstrably a myth, an analysis by The Washington Free Beacon found that men are paid more than women in Harris’s Senate office and presidential campaign. Oops. “A spokesman for Harris’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment on the gender pay gaps in her Senate office and on her campaign, and whether either would be granted ‘equal pay certification’ under her proposed system,” The Washington Free Beacon reported. As my colleague at The Heritage Foundation Romina Boccia pointed out, similar proposals were already attempted in both Iceland and Denmark. And the consequences? Not good. “Instead of trying to micromanage employers’ practices in an effort to artificially force women’s wages to match those of men’s,” she argues, “policymakers should focus on reducing barriers to opportunity and supporting women in the choices they make for themselves.” More Fallout From #MeToo A year and a half after the rise of the #MeToo movement, there’s more bad news. According to CBS News, “A new study by LeanIn.org found 60 percent of male managers said they are uncomfortable interacting with women at work – up 32 percent from 2018. Workplace interactions that men are nervous about include mentoring, socializing and having one-on-one meetings.” Sheryl Sandberg, founder of LeanIn.org and Facebook COO, proposed this solution: “If there’s a man out there who doesn’t want to have a work dinner with a woman, my message is simple: Don’t have one with a man. Group lunches for everyone. Make it explicit, make it thoughtful, make it equal. Men need to step up. We need to redefine what it means to be a good guy at work. It’s not enough to not harass, and I think too many people think that’s sufficient. That’s necessary, that’s a basic, but it’s not sufficient.” Read more or watch Sandberg’s interview at CBSNews.com. Cracking Down on Big Tech Republican Senator Josh Hawley is shaking up the Internet privacy world, introducing a bill that would enable users to block all websites from collecting data “beyond what is indispensable to the companies’ online services.” “Browsers have long allowed users to send ‘Do Not Track’ signals,” reports Bloomberg, “but the feature is only a request and is rarely fulfilled, Hawley said.” The legislation would have a massive impact on companies such as Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Facebook, which bring in millions, if not billions of dollars in online ad sales each year. As Emily Jashinsky wrote for The Federalist, “While some conservatives may bristle at Hawley’s ostensible appetite for regulation, the senator is consciously seeking to blaze a new path. Yes, it’s part of the Trump-era culture war, and could certainly come to involve objectionable policy proposals, but it’s also a fight in which partisan battle lines have yet to be clearly drawn. That’s in no small part why his efforts warrant attention.” And attention, we’ll pay. Stay tuned because anyone who’s received creepy Instagram ads knows this issue isn’t going away. Episiotomies It’s a graphic topic, but one we need to talk about. USA Today published a frightening investigation into medically unnecessary surgical cuts to the vagina during childbirth, known as episiotomies. “Mothers who receive episiotomies – an incision at the vaginal opening to create more room as a baby’s head appears – are more likely to suffer severe complications than if they had been allowed to tear naturally.” “That’s why national guidelines since 2006 have called for limiting the procedure to emergencies, such as when a baby’s shoulders get stuck. Although there is no national consensus on how frequently the procedure should be used, a leading hospital safety group recommends that the cuts should occur in no more than 5% of vaginal deliveries.” “But a USA TODAY analysis of hospital billing data finds dozens of hospitals in eight states with episiotomy rates of 20% or higher, some of them nearly double that.” Read the full investigation here. And Because It’s Hump Day… Dramatic photos show Border Patrol agent saving drowning migrant boy. (Maybe let’s stop demonizing these guys?) LIFE-CHANGING: 27 waffle maker recipes you’ll wish you knew sooner. Impossible Foods debuts second product: meatless sausage at Little Caesars. (My only question is, why not Papa John’s?) “No, not an Oreo.” And finally, ShopBop sale alert! (But don’t get your hopes too high up…everything is still pretty expensive.) Why ‘Unpopular The Movie’ is so unpopular: It calls out false Christianity Posted: 22 May 2019 05:19 AM PDT YouTube is rife with faith-based teachings and movies that garner millions of views for inaccurate and often heretical teachings. That’s what’s most popular on social media today. Believers in the Bible have a hard enough time combating false religions and atheism. It’s even more challenging going against the poor teachings that are flooding western society, […] The post Why ‘Unpopular The Movie’ is so unpopular: It calls out false Christianity appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
NZ Hate Preachers Posted: 22 May 2019 04:56 AM PDT Having worked with Kiwis for many, many years, and having followed events in En Zed for the last three decades, I was just as shocked and horrified as anyone about the horrific massacre of Muslims at Friday prayers at their mosques in Christchurch on March 15, 2019. You can see my three contemporaneous articles here: […] The post NZ Hate Preachers appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Shocking NY Times headline calls evil good and good evil Posted: 22 May 2019 04:42 AM PDT Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! – Isaiah 5:20 There are four tactics favored by many mainstream media outlets, including the NY Times, that help them fulfill their two primary goals. Let’s start with […] The post Shocking NY Times headline calls evil good and good evil appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Why Game of Thrones felt rushed Posted: 21 May 2019 10:12 PM PDT One of the biggest criticisms the eighth season of Game of Thrones received was that the final season was rushed. However, the given the numerous deviations from the source material, not only did DB Weiss and David Benioff not rush the show, they dragged out the plot. For those who noted that the eighth season […] The post Why Game of Thrones felt rushed appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Graham Ledger: Democrats, mainstream media panicking over William Barr’s upcoming investigations Posted: 21 May 2019 08:18 PM PDT It’s human nature for people to talk about one of two things: What they want the most and what they fear the most. That’s why the rhetoric coming from the Democratic Party and their lapdogs in mainstream media for the last month has all surrounded Attorney General William Barr, the people working with him, and […] The post Graham Ledger: Democrats, mainstream media panicking over William Barr’s upcoming investigations appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Carlson vs. Shapiro: A way forward Posted: 21 May 2019 07:43 PM PDT Tucker Carlson has recently caused quite a stir. He’s taken a very populist view of the role of government when it comes to intervening in the market, going so far as to suggest such things the mandated limiting of automation. To justify this, he points to the fact that as the market changes and certain […] The post Carlson vs. Shapiro: A way forward appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Sanctuary policies fail 14-year-old Ariana Funes-Diaz again as her suspected MS-13 murderers released a second time Posted: 21 May 2019 07:22 PM PDT The story of Ariana Funes-Diaz’s death is saddening because it was completely preventable. Our initial report failed to determine her alleged murderers had already been detained and released a year before she was killed. MS-13 gang members Josue Rafael Fuentes-Ponce and Joel Ernesto Escobar were in the custody of Prince George County in Maryland with ICE detainer […] The post Sanctuary policies fail 14-year-old Ariana Funes-Diaz again as her suspected MS-13 murderers released a second time appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Love is often a one-way street between Evangelical Christians and Jews (and that’s okay) Posted: 21 May 2019 06:44 PM PDT Jesus Christ was a Jew. The Apostles were Jews. To understand why this is so and more importantly why it’s a perfectly […] The post Love is often a one-way street between Evangelical Christians and Jews (and that’s okay) appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |

MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: Best-laid plans? Dems still haven’t figured out how to fight Trump
As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi
tries to prevent her Democratic colleagues from rushing to impeachment proceedings,
it’s worth asking again:
Five months into their majority,
what do House Democrats have to show for it?
Not an infrastructure deal (the subject of today’s meeting with President Trump, which is unlikely to go anywhere, especially after Trump
told Pelosi and Chuck Schumer that Congress should pass his U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade deal first).
Not any progress on health care, which was Democrats’ No. 1 priority in last year’s elections.
Not HR1 – the campaign-finance and ethics bill that they passed in March, but which isn’t going anywhere in
the Senate.
And the summer and fall is expected to be spent dealing with thorny issues like budget caps and raising the debt limit.
AP Photo/ Evan Vucci
So Pelosi and House Democrats have to ask themselves:
What does success look like heading in 2020 – beyond the presidential race, which is shaping up to be a 50-50 proposition?
And what’s the plan for 2019?
Is it triumphing over Trump in the courts?
Is it
finding damaging information that could hurt Trump next year –like how
House Republicans Benghazi-ed Hillary Clinton in 2015?
Because
one reason why House Democrats are growing restless – and increasingly
talking about impeachment – is that they have little to show for their
majority.
At least right now.
Biden or a Biden-slayer?
Unless your name is Joe Biden,
no Democrat looks all that great in the early 2020 polling.
And, yes, it’s still really early.
But that early Biden strength is a potentially rewarding situation for the rest of the Dem field:
Beating a strong Biden makes you a stronger candidate.
It would be akin to Barack Obama’s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2008 — remember, she was far from a lightweight in that race.
In fact, Obama’s win over Clinton ultimately proved to be more difficult than his general-election triumph over John McCain.
So it sets up a POTENTIALLY virtuous situation for Democrats:
They could end up with Biden as their nominee, or they could end up with the man or woman who ultimately beats him.
Of course, that assumes Biden remains formidable and healthy over the next year.
And
it also assumes the Dem nomination doesn’t devolve into chaos
(contested convention, mass protests, a party that’s unable to come
together).
Because anything is possible in American politics…

KY-GOV: It’s going to be Bevin versus Beshear
State Attorney General Andy Beshear won the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Kentucky last night, and he’ll face
incumbent Republican Gov. Matt Bevin in the fall.
Beshear
got 38 percent of the vote, while state House Minority Leader got 32
percent and former state Auditor Adam Edelen finished third at 28
percent.
(It’s a reminder that going negative – like Edelen did – can have consequences with voters.)
Strikingly, Bevin won just 52 percent in his own GOP primary, with state Rep. Robert Goforth taking 39 percent of the vote.
And as we’ve said before, November’s election could be a canary in the coal mine for 2020.
A
relatively unpopular Republican incumbent. A relatively strong economy.
And a state with a considerable urban-versus-rural divide.
TWEET OF THE DAY: My Old Kentucky Home
2020 VISION: Breaking down Beto O’Rourke’s town hall
NBC’s Garrett Haake reports on the highlights of Beto O’Rourke’s CNN town hall appearance last night.
1. On impeachment, O’Rourke said it is time to begin, damn the political consequences.
2. On abortion, he said any federal judge he nominates must understand that Roe v. Wade is settled law.
3. And he defended two positions that sometimes don’t sit well with progressives – his support for Medicare For America versus Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All, and his past vote to lift a ban on oil exports.
On the campaign trail today: Pete
Buttigieg visits New York, including participating in a 92nd St. Y
event with Jonathan Capehart… And John Delaney stumps in Iowa.
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 71 percent and 38 percent
71 percent and 38 percent.
That’s the share of American
voters who say that the state of the economy is good or excellent (71 percent, the highest percentage in almost 18 years) …
… and the share who say that they approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president (38 percent, a typical but decidedly poor number for the commander-in-chief).
(That’s
according to a new Quinnipiac poll.)
It’s a striking difference between the record high economic optimism and a presidential approval rating mired in the high 30s.
Asked specifically about Trump’s economic performance, 48 percent of voters say they approve, while 45 percent disapprove.
Still, 54 percent said they “definitely” would not vote for him in 2020.
THE LID: Pelosi and the Giant Impeach
Don’t miss the pod from yesterday, when we look at the numbers behind the impeachment debate.
ICYMI: News clips you shouldn’t miss
The Washington Post reports that a confidential draft IRS memo says the White House must turn over the president’s tax returns to Congress UNLESS he invokes executive privilege.
Today’s the day for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s medical school to release the findings of its investigation into a racist yearbook photo.
HUD Secretary Ben Carson misheard real estate term “REO” as cookie “OREO.”
Former Ohio State University students don’t think that Jim Jordan has been exonerated in the school’s molestation cover-up scandal.

REAL CLEAR POLITICS
05/22/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Ignoring Polls; Nadler’s ‘Family’; the Jimmy Fund By Carl M. Cannon on May 22, 2019 09:18 am Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 22, 2019. Carl Einar Gustafson had never heard the word lymphosarcoma until he was diagnosed with it at age 11. While walking to school in New Sweden, Maine one morning in 1947, the boy experienced stomach cramps so painful and sudden that he was rushed to the hospital. The prognosis wasn’t good: The fatality rate for childhood victims of non-Hodgins lymphoma was around 70 percent at that time. Doctors didn’t tell the boy any of that, but they didn’t have to: He figured things were bad when his father, a stoic Scandinavian potato farmer, wept at the news. “I knew something was up, because Dad just didn’t cry,” Gustafson said later. “He looked like a beaten man.” But this story didn’t have a sad ending, as I’ll explain in a moment. Farber, who had recently founded the Children’s Cancer Research Foundation, took a liking to the boy, and when approached by the producers for a popular radio show called “Truth or Consequences,” chose him as a guest on the program. Taking a cue from the Gustafson family, which called the boy by his middle name, Farber always addressed him as “Einar.” Protective of his patient’s privacy, however, the doctor insisted that the announcers call him “Jimmy” on their program, which aired 71 years ago today. And on May 22, 1948, Ralph Edwards, the show’s popular host, did his live broadcast from Boston Children’s Hospital. Seemingly to break the ice, Edwards asked the boy a question about the local National League team, the Boston Braves. “Who’s the catcher on the Braves, Jimmy?'” “Phil Masi,” came the reply. “That’s right. Have you ever met Phil Masi?'” “No.” Suddenly a third voice was heard by listeners across the country: “Hi, Jimmy! My name is Phil Masi.” Then, as if by magic, one Boston Braves star after another walked from the hospital hallway into Jimmy’s room, bringing autographed hats, balls, and bats. Boston skipper Billy Southworth was the final visitor — and he carried into the room an authentic Braves uniform for the boy. A piano was wheeled in and the sick kid led the players and hospital staff in a heartfelt, if slightly off-key, rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” “We play the Chicago Cubs tomorrow in a doubleheader at Braves Field,” Southworth said. “We’re calling it Jimmy’s Day.” Before making his final pitch, Edwards rather brusquely told Farber that Children’s Cancer Research Foundation was too clunky a name for people to remember. The unflappable doctor, quick on his feet, responded by suggesting another name: the Jimmy Fund. So it came to be, with Edwards concluding the emotional broadcast by announcing that that if the program resulted in $20,000 being donated to the fund, Jimmy would be given a television set to watch Braves games in the hospital. What happened next was the real miracle. Checks began arriving from every corner of the country. Coffee cans were passed around at Little League games, church bake sales, and movie theaters all over New England. In the city of Boston itself, people took cabs or street cars to Children’s Hospital to give cash. The initial fund drive reaped nearly 12 times the goal Edwards had set. Einar Gustafson got his television and his expressed wish: the Braves went on to win the pennant. More important, ground was broken the following year on a five-story, Jimmy Fund-financed medical center for Dr. Sidney Faber and his staff. It’s a storybook ending that keeps repeating itself. The Boston Braves moved to Milwaukee and then to Atlanta, but the Jimmy Fund stayed in New England. In 1953, the Boston Red Sox adopted the cause as the team’s official charity. Ted Williams, back from the Korean War, became the most visible face of the fund. Today, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, as Dr. Farber’s original little lab is now called, has some 4,000 employees who do the research and provide other resources to discover cures and provide treatments for all kinds of cancers. It’s a charity I contribute to each year, usually by sponsoring a rider in the Pan-Mass Challenge, a bicycle race that since its inception in 1980 has raised some $654 million for Dana-Farber. Or you can contribute directly to The Jimmy Fund itself, still going strong seven decades after its founding. As for the original “Jimmy,” there’s a nice story there, too. Most New Englanders assumed he died in childhood. He didn’t. Dr. Farber’s treatments worked and he got better, went back home to Maine, grew to be a strapping 6-foot-5-inch truck driver, started a construction company, married his high school sweetheart, switched his allegiance to the Red Sox after the Braves skipped town, remarried after becoming a widow, and started another family. Half a century later, he revealed himself. The idea was his sister’s, who, with her annual check to The Jimmy Fund mentioned in a brief 1997 note that the original “Jimmy” was her brother — and still alive. This one struck a chord with a fund official named Karen Cummings, who followed up with a letter of her own. She explained that even Dana-Farber officials assumed that the original Jimmy had passed away, “as the vast majority of children who contracted cancer in the 1940s did not survive.” Cummings had always hoped that this one had lived, and her joy that Jimmy survived deepened a few days later when her phone rang. “Hi, Karen,” said the voice at the other end of the line. “This is Jimmy. I heard you were looking for me.” As the New York Times wrote when he finally did pass away in 2001, Einar Gustafson “proves that there are second acts in America, or at least second innings.” Or third or fourth acts. And nine innings. When asked to throw out the first pitch before a Red Sox-Yankees game at Fenway Park in 1998, on the 50th anniversary of The Jimmy Fund, Gustafson complied, but not before putting it in perspective when asked by a Boston Globe reporter how he’d feel about the standing ovation he was certain to receive. “I’ve had that before,” he replied. “They did that for me at the Braves game in ’48, and I waved to the crowd.” But despite his inherent Swedish cool, 1998 did bring a thrill for the original Jimmy — and for Ted Williams. The two men met, and it was hard to tell who was happier about it. “How are you, Jimmy baby?” said the Splendid Splinter when he saw the white-haired 63-year-old grandfather of six. “Geez, you look great. You’re an inspiration to everybody!” Today, the survival rate for the kind of cancer Carl Einar Gustafson had as a kid has surpassed 90 percent. That’s good. It’s not good enough, though. That’s why I contribute to Dana-Farber each year, and hope you will, too. And it’s not the only worthy charity. Recently, I’ve learned of an organization called Cancer Support Community. They are doing the Lord’s work in this field, too, and can always use more help. Carl M.
