THE DAILY SIGNAL
May 14, 2019
Good morning from Washington, where liberals’ new health care plan
should make you more than a little queasy. That’s Marie Fishpaw’s take. A
former shop steward fights to change a law that cost him his job for
bucking a union. Kevin Mooney reports. Ukraine is regaining turf from
Russia, Nolan Peterson writes. Plus: Fred Lucas on Denver’s legalization
of psychedelic mushrooms, Amy Swearer on real stories of good folks
with guns, and David Harsanyi on progressives’ poor predictions on tax
cuts.
News He Tried to Quit His Union. The Law Didn’t Let Him, and He Lost His Government Job Instead. Francisco
Molina, a social worker for more than 12 years in Lehigh County,
Pennsylvania, grew dissatisfied with his government employee union and
tried to resign from it last summer rather than continue to pay dues. More Analysis He Was an Antifa Activist. Then He Took an Economics Class. Gabriel Nadales is that rare young adult who became more conservative in college. More Commentary Democrats Flip the Health Care Script: If You Like Your Plan, You Can’t Keep It The
Congressional Budget Office finds the Democrats’ bill would result in
1.5 million people going without the insurance coverage they chose. More News After 4 Years of a Frozen Conflict, Ukrainians Slowly Retake Ground From Russian Forces In
the last year, Ukrainian military forces retook about 9.3 square miles
of territory in the country’s embattled Donbas region, underscoring the
slow and steady progress of a so-called creeping offensive that dates to
late 2016. More Commentary Liberals Were Very Wrong About Tax Cuts. Again. After
cautioning that passage of tax cuts would portend “Armageddon,”
then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi explained that the 2017 Tax Cuts
and Jobs Act was “the worst bill in the history of the United States
Congress.” More Commentary The Second Amendment Saved These Gun Owners’ Lives in April On
April 1, a domestic violence incident ended badly for the male attacker
after his female victim defended herself by shooting him in the face. More News Denver’s ‘Magic Mushroom’ Vote Moves Drug Legalization Beyond Marijuana “The
movement was never about marijuana; it was always about legalizing all
drugs,” says Kevin Sabet, a senior adviser in the White House Office of
National Drug Control Policy under the past three presidents. More

Tuesday, May 14, 2019 Tensions Flare With Iran “Iran threatened [last] Wednesday to enrich its uranium stockpile closer to weapons-grade levels in 60 days if world powers fail to negotiate new terms for its 2015 nuclear deal, raising regional tensions as a U.S. aircraft carrier and bombers headed to the Middle East to confront Tehran.” AP News From the Left The left worries the strategy of ‘maximum pressure’ is not working, and about the risk of escalating tensions leading to armed conflict. “There can be little doubt that the administration’s ‘maximum pressure’ policy is inflicting considerable economic harm on Iran… To date, however, there is no sign that either Iran’s regional policies are shifting or its leaders are willing to come back to the negotiating table and submit to the Trump administration’s demands. Nor is there any hint that economic hardship has triggered popular unrest of a magnitude that would threaten the regime’s survival… “The one thing Tehran would find more intolerable than the crushing impact of sanctions is raising the white flag because of them… [The US should step] back from maximalist demands, and [use] sanctions as a scalpel, not a chainsaw.” Ali Vaez, The Atlantic Some are asking, “Can Europe save the Iran deal?… Europe could take small but symbolically important steps to signal to the Iranians that it is committed to maintaining the nuclear deal |
[without running afoul of US sanctions]
… It won’t be easy to walk this
thin line, but the stakes are high: If the deal falls through, it will
increase the risk of American military action to curb Iran’s nuclear
program.”
Ariane Tabatabai, New York Times
Others point out that “attempts by some European Union countries over the past year to circumvent renewed American sanctions have come to nothing.
The commercial reality is that they cannot protect energy companies,
banks and other businesses seeking to trade with Iran from Washington’s
punitive secondary sanctions… The idea that the Europeans will ride to
the rescue, implicit in Rouhani’s 60-day deadline for a resuscitation of
the nuclear deal, is… far-fetched.”
Simon Tisdall, The Guardian
Regarding the deployment of an aircraft carrier and bombers, many note
that “the United States has a long history of provoking, instigating, or
launching wars based on dubious, flimsy, or manufactured threats… The
most egregious case was the U.S. invasion of Iraq, in 2003, which was
based on bad intelligence that Baghdad had active
weapons-of-mass-destruction programs. The repercussions are still
playing out sixteen years (and more than four thousand American deaths)
later… The sense of foreboding is tangible.”
Robin Wright, The New Yorker
“The US president’s goal, it seems, is to put so much pressure on Tehran
that it has no choice but to completely change its behavior — but he
could end up leading the countries to the brink of war in the process…
Now is typically the time when cooler heads prevail, but it’s unclear if
there are cooler heads around… It’s hard to overstate how avoidable this situation was.”
Alex Ward, Vox
From the Right
The right is not worried about Iran’s withdrawal from the deal, arguing that it was ineffective from the beginning.
“Rouhani’s
threats to partially withdraw from the JCPOA will have a negligible
effect on Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons because the agreement is so
weak. The nuclear deal already allows Iran to pursue nuclear-weapons-related activities,
permitting it to enrich uranium with 5,000 centrifuge machines while
the agreement is in effect. Its inspection provisions are likewise very
weak and Iran has violated them by not permitting inspections of
military sites. Iran also has refused to fully account for its past
nuclear-weapons work… “Iran’s recent threats and alleged plans to attack U.S. interests reflect the success of President Trump’s maximum-pressure strategy on Iran. U.S. sanctions have isolated Iran and deprived its ruling mullahs of funds to spend on the military, terrorism, and meddling in regional disputes.” Fred Fleitz, National Review Dated but relevant: “The agreement was always nothing more than a giant Band-Aid over Iran’s obvious nuclear weapons aspirations – freezing those ambitions for roughly 10 years, but never truly solving the problem… “[Moreover] while Iran’s nuclear aspirations were at least frozen for a decade under the deal, it faced no restrictions on having an entire decade to research, develop and test ever-more advanced missiles – missiles that could someday carry a nuclear warhead. In the last few years, Iran has tested various new ballistic and cruise missiles, each demonstrating growing leaps in technological sophistication and accuracy… Trump killing [the] deeply flawed Iran deal [was] the right move.” Harry J. Kazianis, Fox News “Anyone who suggests that Iran and its proxies don’t constitute a threat to US interests and its allies simply haven’t been paying attention for the last 40 years. That doesn’t mean that war is the inevitable answer, but it should mean that preparing for conflict and ensuring that Iran understands the consequences are at least reasonable responses.” Ed Morrissey, Hot Air Minority View: “The U.S. went back on its promises of sanctions relief to Iran, and has embarked on a much more aggressive economic war in pursuit of maximalist goals that amount to regime change in all but name. Sanctions cannot provide leverage over the targeted regime if that regime believes it has nothing to gain from complying with our government’s demands. If a regime is being told that it will be strangled now or strangled later, its leaders may decide that they will take their chances and try to outlast the administration that is trying to strangle them.” Daniel Larison, The American Conservative |

Good morning, Here is all the news conservatives need to know to start their day. At 4pm ET, you can catch me on radio to bring you up to speed on developments throughout the day. You can listen live here. Are You Now, Or Have You Ever Been, Part of the Southern Baptist Deep State? Occasionally, Twitter blesses us with a truly outstanding tweet. Today’s comes from Jerry Falwell, Jr. who seems to think there is a Southern Baptist “deep state.” Now, it is worth remembering that Falwell is not a pastor or theologian. Rashida Tlaib’s Holocaust Revisionism Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s recent comments regarding the Holocaust on a Yahoo podcast have earned rightful criticism after she attempted to argue that Jews fleeing the Holocaust were welcomed by self-sacrificing Palestinian Arabs upon their arrival in Israel. Anyone with a shred of knowledge regarding the treatment of Jews in the Middle East knows this imaginative propaganda is entirely false. From David Harsanyi of The Federalist: “For Tlaib, the Holocaust was primarily a tragedy for the Palestinian people, who were unable to repel Jews’ immigration and stop the formation of a Jewish state. Her words are a helpful reminder of not only why Israel exists, but also that the tragedy of the Palestinian people is neither the fault of the Jews, nor the British, nor the Holocaust. Tlaib offers two important revisionist claims: The first revolves around the contention that Palestinian Arabs were not only welcoming of the Jews, but actually sacrificed their own dignity and lives so Jews could be safe. The second revolves around the notion that Jews were, or would be, safe under Palestinian rule… [Amin al-]Husseini [grand mufti of Jerusalem and leader of the Palestinian cause] not only ramped up violence in the Middle East, he directly participated in the oppression of Jews during World War II. As a guest of Hitler, he helped recruit thousands of Muslims to join a division of the Waffen-SS, who then played an active role in the destruction of Yugoslavian Jewry. In his Berlin radio speeches during the war, Husseini preached: “Kill the Jews wherever you find them—this pleases God, history and religion.” Such words would find a safe space in any Hamas lecture. Husseini personally, with the backing of Himmler, Eichmann, and other Nazis, intervened to stop the issuing of at least 400,000 visas to Jews trying to emigrate to British Palestine. Most of those Jews ended up in concentration camps rather than the “safe harbor” of Haifa. In 1943, after hearing that some German allies were negotiating with the International Red Cross and others to transport thousands of Jewish children to Palestine to avoid death, he lobbied to prevent the rescue, pushing to have them sent to Poland to perish. Husseini was accused of war crimes by the Nuremberg tribunal. This hardly seems like a person offering a safe haven for Jews.” Nancy Pelosi, in the spirit of continually offering coverage for her radically anti-Semitic freshmen representatives, recently accused those of criticizing Rep. Tlaib of “grossly misreprent[ing]” her comments. The link to the full audio is available here. Hollywood Icon Doris Day Passes Away at 97 Doris Day, one of the most popular actresses of the 1950’s and 1960’s, died in her home yesterday in Carmel Valley, California. Known for gracing the screen in a spectrum of genres, from romantic comedies to thrillers, Day perpetually resisted the attempts of those around her to confine her to one particular “image.” To those who worked with her, she was often characterized for having an enigmatic nature that oscillated between the ordinary and the extraordinary – as some put it, she was proclaimed “the girl next door” without ever genuinely being “the girl next door.” From NPR: Norman Jewison directed Day in two films in the ’60s. He said her persona and her personality were able to attract men and women alike and were perfect for the times. “She was a good girl,” he said. “She wasn’t snide. She wasn’t too smart. She brought a kind of an honesty and a freshness. And she was also strangely sexy.” But David Kaufman, one of Day’s biographers, said the real Day was anything but the girl next door. “She’s was a woman who was an extremely sensual woman,” he said. “She had affairs with a number of people. She was never happily married. She had a son but was never really a mother; he was more like a brother to her. She in many ways was the opposite to the girl next door.” Born in 1922, Day originally had aspirations to be a dancer, but a tragic car accident in her teen years compelled her to pursue singing instead. At 26, Day made her Hollywood debut in the musical Romance on the High Seas. From Vanity Fair: “Over the next 20 years, she’d make another 38 films, and would spend seven years as the top female box-office draw and four as the top draw, male or female. She was equally at home in musicals (the best of which were the Western-themed Calamity Jane and Love Me or Leave Me, a biopic of singer Ruth Etting), dramas (notably, Young Man With a Horn, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much, Julie, and Midnight Lace), and comedies. She introduced on-screen two songs that won Oscars, “Secret Love” (from Calamity Jane) and “Que Será, Será (Whatever Will Be, Will Be),” from The Man Who Knew Too Much… Aside from that late-career resurrection, Day was content to spend her last decades taking care of the animals at her estate in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. After accepting a lifetime-achievement Golden Globe in 1989, she turned down all invitations to accept honors and awards in person. Perhaps her reticence stemmed from her lifelong insecurity over her public image, whether that was the perky and chaste girl next door or the glamorous blonde star. Remarked Send Me No Flowers director Norman Jewison, “Doris did not believe that she was an attractive woman. I thought she was beautiful. Millions of fans thought she was beautiful. Everybody she had ever worked with thought she was beautiful. This new bronzer by Rihanna’s beauty brand FENTY is quite the catch. It has a matte finish, allowing you to layer with highlighters as appropriate. I recommend going to Sephora in person to try a few of the shades to avoid purchasing one that goes on too “orange.” I purchased the bronzer in the shade “Inda Sun” and found it to not be too dramatic for my fair skin. Liquid Light Serum Highlighter, Ilia, $42 I’m generally skeptical of liquid highlighters because I find liquid makeup to be yet another opportunity for a mess, but I enjoyed this highlighter. It’s nonsticky, blending nicely into foundation, and its liquid formula allows for more pointed application. With the liquid (as opposed to the powder), it’s much easier to control where the highlighter is places, especially around the eyes. Quick Flick Eyeliner, Quick Flick, $25 This eyeliner-stamp duo is every woman’s prayer for a perfect winged top line. This liquid liner has two ends – one for stamping the wing shape, the other for applying the line. If it sounds bizarre, feel free to give the website tutorial a glance. While the winged look might be much for some women every day, I’ve enjoyed this little tool. Added bonus, the “stamp” comes in various thickness levels. BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist. |

MEET THE PRESS
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: The center of the Democratic 2020 field is wider than expected
Six months ago, the conventional wisdom about the emerging 2020 race was:
- that it would be a race to the left
- that Joe Biden could be a bust (or might not even run)
- and that Kamala Harris and Beto O’Rourke were two of the top favorites who ultimately might win the nomination.
So how’s that conventional wisdom working out?
And while it’s still early, maybe the biggest story about the Dem 2020 race so far is how wide – and crowded –
the center of the party is right now.
Biden has a significant lead in the polls.
Another candidate from the relative center, Steve Bullock, is now in the race (more on him below).
And the trend on health care has been to break away from Bernie Sanders on health care – rather than embrace him completely.
Of course, the 2018 midterms should have taught us that the pragmatic center of the party is a force to be reckoned with.
For every Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib, there was an Abigail Spanberger, an
Elissa Slotkin, a Cindy Axne, a Colin Allred and even a Donna Shalala
representing
the pragmatic/Obama center of the party.
This isn’t to say the left can’t win the Dem nomination; it definitely could.
And, as we’ve discovered, the conventional wisdom will probably change again in another six months – maybe good news for Bernie, Beto and Kamala.
But if something HAS remained constant over the last six months, it’s been the strength of the middle of the Democratic Party.

Chaos reigns
Chaos, arguably, has been the defining characteristic of President Trump’s first two and a half years in office.

4.
Before Trump’s purge at DHS, top officials challenged plan for mass family arrests
As for the attorney Barr picked to lead this new Russia investigation, John Durham, he
has a history of dealing with sensitive matters.
“Attorney
General Janet Reno asked Mr. Durham in 1999 to investigate the F.B.I.’s
handling of a notorious informant: the organized crime leader James
(Whitey) Bulger,”
the New York Times writes.
“In 2008,
Attorney General Michael B. Mukasey assigned Mr. Durham to investigate
the C.I.A.’s destruction of videotapes in 2005 showing the torture of
terrorism suspects.”
“A year
later, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. expanded Mr. Durham’s mandate
to also examine whether the agency broke any laws in its abuses of
detainees in its custody.”
Beto’s relaunch: “I recognize I can do a better job”
Over the last few days (here
and
here), we’ve been talking about resets and relaunches for Kamala Harris and Beto O’Rourke.
And here’s O’Rourke telling MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow last night that he
can do a better job talking to a national audience.
“We’ve
been on the road now for eight weeks traveling to over 15 states, have
held more than 150 town halls, running today the same way that we
started. But I recognize I can do a better job also
of talking to a national audience, beyond the town halls.”
O’Rourke also
discussed what distinguishes his 2020 candidacy – and also his 2018 Senate campaign – from the rest of the Dem field.
“It
doesn’t matter how blue, we’re not going to take you for granted.
Doesn’t matter how small, how red, how rural, we’re not going to write
you off. Everyone’s important. Everyone counts.”

2020 VISION: Bullock’s in
In
a video released this morning, Montana Gov. Steve Bullock became the latest Democrat to announce a presidential bid.
He talks about living – and winning – in a red state: “As the Democratic governor of a state that Trump won by 20 points, I don’t have the luxury to talking to people who agree with
me.”
He also emphasizes
campaign-finance reform. “We need to defeat Donald Trump in
2020 and defeat the corrupt system that lets campaign money drown out
the people’s voice, so we can finally make good on the promise of a fair
shot for everyone.”
More
from NBC’s Alex Seitz-Wald: “Core to Bullock’s case is that he won
Montana twice, including his reelection in 2016 on the same night as
Donald Trump won it in a landslide. He did it while sticking to core
Democratic values on everything from abortion to
climate change to guns.”
Bullock
launches his campaign from his high school alma mater in Helena, Mont.,
at 3:30 pm ET, and he heads to Iowa on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
On the campaign trail today: In addition to Bullock’s launch in Montana, Joe Biden remains in New Hampshire… And Beto O’Rourke raises money in Houston.

Good morning,Forty-nine
percent (49%) of voters nationwide believe that a child born in the
United States to an illegal immigrant should be considered a U.S.
citizen. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that 41% disagree
and 10% are not sure. However, in the case of a pregnant woman who enters the country illegally and gives birth, just 32% believe she should be allowed to remain in the country.
That’s down six points since last fall. Forty-seven percent (47%) do
not believe she should be allowed to stay while 22% are not sure.Democrats,
by a 44% to 28% margin, believe that woman should be allowed to stay in
the United States. Republicans, by a 74% to 14% margin disagree. Among
Independent voters, 35% believe she should be allowed to stay while 42%
do not.Overall, 75%
believe that our immigration system should prioritize people with skills
that could benefit the economy rather than granting legal status to
people with relatives in the United States. That view is shared across
partisan and demographic lines.Underlying these attitudes is a strong belief among voters that legal immigration is
good for the country while illegal immigration is bad. Looking to 2020, former Vice President Joe Biden is the top choice for 39% of Democratic voters and Democratic leaning Independents. Senator Bernie Sanders is preferred by 20% followed by Senator Elizabeth Warren at 8% and Senator Kamala Harris at 6%.Sixty-six percent (66%) of Democrats rate former Vice President Joe Biden as one of their top three picks in the race for
the party’s presidential nomination. Fifty-one percent (51%) say the
same about Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Elizabeth Warren is a top
three pick for 33% while Senator Kamala Harris is selected by 29%.
Nobody else tops 20%.Currently, more than 70% of Democrats would be satisfied with any of those hopefuls.
Only 4-6% would be depressed by each of these candidates as their
party’s nominee. While this could change as the campaigns heat up, it
suggests that Democrats are prepared to unify around whichever candidate
is selected to challenge President Trump. As part of our mission to enhance the
public dialogue, ScottRasmussen.com provides daily updates of the president’s job approval and the generic congressional ballot. We also track and provide regular updates on the economy, health care, immigration, Congress, ratings of Congressional leaders, Election

REAL CLEAR POLITICS
05/14/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Paid Family Leave; Warren and Tuition; Call of the Wolf By Carl M. Cannon on May 14, 2019 08:00 am Good morning, it’s Tuesday, May 14, 2019. On this date in 1987, the National Park Service formally announced its support for an idea that had been quietly incubating in the park service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service bureaucracy for years — a plan to reintroduce wolves to Yellowstone National Park. “Of all the species that were once here, it’s the only one still missing,” said John D. Varley, the park service’s chief of research at Yellowstone. In a rather a classic understatement, Varley added: “It’s tremendously controversial.” It had a partisan tinge to it, too. Western Republicans in Congress heeded the desires of local ranchers and farmers bitterly opposed to the proposal. This made it a hard sell at the top levels of the Department of Interior under Ronald Reagan and his successor, George H.W. Bush. Presidential elections can have unexpected consequences, however, and after Bill Clinton was elected in 1992 — in a campaign in which wolf restoration went unmentioned as a domestic policy issue — he named former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt as the new interior secretary. A lifelong conservationist, Babbitt knew about the wolf restoration efforts. He also knew that an environmental group, Defenders of Wildlife, had developed a creative strategy to raise private money to compensate ranchers for any loss of livestock taken by wolves. So the plan was put into action. It’s been a success, too, as I’ll explain in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Family Leave Bill Empowers Parents — With Their Own Money. Kristan Hawkins praises the CRADLE Act, which would allow parents to receive paid leave benefits in exchange for postponing activation of their Social Security retirement benefits. Corporations Already Provide What Warren Decrees by Force. In RealClearMarkets, John Tamny sees flaws in the presidential candidate’s call for free college tuition and loan forgiveness. Safeguarding Jewish Lives. Also in RCM, Walter Block offers an economist’s view of how best to protect Jews at a time when even synagogues offer no sanctuary. Getting to Know the Competition — China. In RealClearDefense, Cortez A. Cooper III spotlights a new report that lays out the Xi regime’s efforts to gain preeminence in the Indo-Pacific region. Remembering Robert Pear. In RealClearHealth, William Pierce has this appreciation of the late health care reporter for the New York Times, who set a high standard for accuracy, thoroughness and fairness. * * * The northern gray wolf (canis lupus) once roamed this continent from the Arctic Circle to central Mexico. There is evidence that Native Americans respected these animals to the point of emulating wolves’ hunting techniques. European settlers brought with them to the New World a contrary mythology, however, one that not only saw wolves as a very real threat to human beings, especially children, but also a frightening, even evil, creature. The most significant cultural trait difference, however, was that white settlers were not strictly a hunting and gathering people: From the beginning they were farmers who raised domesticated animals. The distinction between domesticated and wild prey was lost on wolves, which killed livestock as willingly as wildlife. In time, whites targeted wolves for extermination. In the continental United States, some of the last refuges for the wolves were America’s great national parks. But they were not safe there, either: By the mid-1940s, National Park Service rangers completed the slaughter of this glorious animal. Almost as soon as wolves had been wiped out, the NPS had misgivings about what it had done. Some of the guilt was over the sheer brutality of poisoning, shooting, and clubbing wolf pups to death. Part of it was a simple belief among some lovers of wildlife — including government employees — that humans simply didn’t have right to bring a storied species to the edge of extinction. In 1986, a couple of wolves crossed the Canadian border into Montana and established a pack in Glacier National Park. These wolves were quietly cheered on by park rangers. But the argument that finally won the day, in the late 1980s and early1990s, was that the ecology of the national parks had been harmed by the absence of wolves. The absence of predators had upended the balance of nature. In Yellowstone, for example, with a dearth of natural predators — I’m referring to human hunters and wolves — to stem their growth, elk herds became too large. Elk overgrazed Yellowstone’s valleys, leading to cycles of starvation for the large ungulates, and to erosion of mountain streams. Beavers were crowded out, according to one theory, causing the range to dry up. It might have contributed to conditions that cause forest fires. One can get carried away with this kind of thinking — you may have been sent videos with titles such as “How Wolves Saved Yellowstone” — but it does seem that natural infrastructures can be thrown out of whack by seemingly small factors. Here’s another example, and it cuts the other way, at least as far as elk are concerned: Six years ago today, University of Wyoming researchers released a study showing that the introduction of lake trout in Yellowstone Lake for the purposes of sport fishing had devastated the population of native cutthroat trout in the lake and its tributaries. Grizzly bears feed on fish, but have trouble getting to lake trout (which are actually char, not trout) because they dwell in deep parts of the lake. So with fewer cutthroat trout spawning in the park, hungry grizzlies have taken to killing and eating elk calves. Another study, made public earlier this year, found even more sweeping impacts of the invasive fish, none of them good. The presence of lake trout and resulting decline in cutthroat also led to a drop in zooplankton. This made the water clearer, which in turn, warmed the lake. Fewer cutthroat also hurt the otter population, while also having deleterious effects on ospreys and bald eagles. A century ago, when wolves still roamed California, famed Yosemite naturalist John Muir put it this way: “When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” Carl M.
