Good morning from Washington, where passage of Democrats’ Equality Act would, among other things, open the locker room door for biological males to dominate in  women’s sports. In a video report, Kelsey Bolar shows how this agenda already crushes high school girls. The mayor of a border town welcomes the president’s assistance in illegal immigrants, reports Fred Lucas, who also tells of two other mayors caught up in voter fraud allegations. Plus: Actor and patriot Gary Sinise visits the podcast, and Romina Boccia explains a government decision that’s good news for “gig” employees.

More Commentary We Hear You: The Equality Act and the LGBT Agenda “As a tomboy back in the day, I’m so fortunate that the idea of ‘self-identified’ wasn’t around. Monday, May 6, 2019 Facebook Censorship Last Friday, Facebook “banned Louis Farrakhan, Alex Jones and other extremists, saying they violated its ban on ‘dangerous individuals.’ The company also removed right-wing personalities Paul Nehlen, Milo Yiannopoulos, Paul Joseph Watson and Laura Loomer, along with Jones’ site, Infowars, which often posts conspiracy theories. The latest bans apply to both Facebook’s main service and to Instagram and extend to fan pages and other related accounts.” AP News From the Left The left generally supports Facebook’s decision, but wants increased transparency about its policies. “The link between what people say online and what people do offline has never been clearer, and neither has the need for companies to do something about it. Concerns about censorship still exist, and rightly: Governments are becoming more eager to get involved in policing Internet speech, and the most aggressive proposals look especially concerning against a backdrop of authoritarian regimes cutting off access to social media altogether. Firms such as Facebook could also overreach. But so far, they are still only getting a grip on the most dangerous actors.”
Editorial Board, The Washington Post

“Researchers found that [in Germany], in towns where more people use Facebook, there have been more attacks on refugees. In Myanmar, human rights activists say Facebook has been used to fuel a genocide against the Rohingya people, a Muslim minority group. The government of Sri Lanka blocked Facebook last year, saying it was being used to foment violence, and shuttered the platform again after terrorist attacks last month. The man who massacred worshippers in two New Zealand mosques in March used Facebook to document his actions. And many in India have blamed numerous launchings on hoaxes spread on the Facebook-owned platform, WhatsApp. So Facebook is clearly going to need to crack down on many more accounts to do its part to reduce these acts of hate.”
Kara Alaimo, CNN

“In a political culture where ideas turn into tribes of like-minded people in internet silos, untouched by alternative views, protesters on the left and right seem to be dangerously content with marching into other people’s events, shouting or chanting a few slogans and walking out. ‘Propaganda ends where dialogue begins,’ philosopher Marshall McLuhan wrote. Social networks can’t police everything that is posted on their platforms, but when they see something that poisons that dialogue, they have not only a right but an obligation to remove it.”
Clarence Page, Chicago Tribune

Critics, however, note that Facebook “didn’t specify how these accounts had violated the platform’s policies. Instead, a spokesperson told multiple outlets that the company has ‘always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology,’ which was a bit tough to swallow, considering these accounts have been spewing hate for years—and many, many hateful accounts remain on the social network…

“The lack of transparency is so troublesome because Facebook’s content moderation processes aren’t only applied to famous racists. For years, black users on Facebook have been forced to navigate the platform’s mercurial enforcement of its speech policies. It’s become so routine for black activists to get suspended when they complain about racism that it’s become common practice in activist communities to create backup accounts and use slang… to dodge the company’s content moderation algorithm… Unless Facebook applies its rules consistently and transparently, people with an agenda will find a way to come crawling back to find their fans.”
April Glaser, Slate From the Right The right, while not defending the opinions of the banned individuals, argues that Facebook should allow all speech permitted under the first amendment. “Why should Louis Farrakhan be allowed to use a telephone to spread his hateful message? Why should anybody sell him paper — or a pencil, for that matter? Think of the damage he might do with them… [Supporters of the new policy] have helped to establish the norm that our public discourse is to be moderated by the social sensibilities of the Fortune 500’s chief executives and their boards of directors. Laugh all you like at Alex Jones. He is a kook. But Facebook, and other online platforms, are not going to stop with him.”
Kevin Williamson, New York Post

“The issue isn’t whether the people in question deserve censure. They do. Or that the forms of speech in which they traffic have redeeming qualities. They don’t… [but] do you trust Mark Zuckerberg and the other young lords of Silicon Valley to be good stewards of the world’s digital speech?…

“What happens with the harder calls, the ones who want to be seen publicly and can’t be swept under: alleged Islamophobes, militant anti-immigration types, the people who call for the elimination of Israel? Facebook has training documents governing hate speech, and is now set to deploy the latest generation of artificial intelligence to detect it. But the decision to absolutely ban certain individuals will always be a human one. It will inevitably be subjective. And as these things generally go, it will wind up leading to bans on people whose views are hateful mainly in the eyes of those doing the banning.”
Bret Stephens, New York Times

Many argue that “the professional irritants expelled from Facebook aren’t equally ‘dangerous’. Milo Yiannopoulos is about as dangerous as a plastic spork. Laura Loomer protests, with good reason, that she hasn’t breached Facebook’s terms of use. Paul Joseph Watson’s speech, from what I can tell, is mostly harmless, and his dubious material falls well inside the speech that Facebook wishes to protect: statements that are ‘wrong or inaccurate, even when they are offensive’. The only conclusion is that Facebook has banned them not because they lie, but because their lies are the wrong ones, told from the wrong political perspective.”
Dominic Green, Spectator USA

“It’s important to remember that Facebook users have an advantage that we don’t enjoy offline. They can mute or block toxic voices. If someone is offending you in a classroom, on the quad, or in the cubicle next to you, there is no mute or block. You must ignore or engage. Online, however, you can entirely curate your feed and remove everyone you don’t like… when activists call for bans, they’re frequently not asking to be personally protected from offensive expression but rather demanding to give you protection you may not want…

“I understand Facebook’s desire to rid itself of terrible speech, especially given the rise of online hate. But when considering how to deal with the worst ideas, it’s prudent to rely on principles of free speech and common law that have served America so well for so long. Facebook has a right to invent its own rules, but perhaps it’s better to exercise that right by deferring to the wisdom of the past.”

POLITICO Playbook: Will Democrats start playing hardball with Trump?

By JAKE SHERMAN, ANNA PALMER and DANIEL LIPPMAN

Democrats like Speaker Nancy Pelosi have tons of leverage. The president needs them to do anything, including keeping the government funded and lifting the debt limit. | Mark Wilson/Getty Images

DRIVING THE DAY

A FEW THINGS WE’RE WATCHING …

— WHEN WILL DEMOCRATS start making PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP pay a political price for the administration’s refusal to cooperate in congressional investigations? Will Democrats start demanding testimony and document production before they consider partnering with the president on legislation like an infrastructure bill? REMEMBER: Democrats have tons of leverage here. The president needs them to do anything, including keeping the government funded and lifting the debt limit, not to mention more lofty goals like some infrastructure package or a prescription drug bill.

NEW FODDER ALONG THESE LINES — @realDonaldTrump at 2:03 p.m.: “After spending more than $35,000,000 over a two year period, interviewing 500 people, using 18 Trump Hating Angry Democrats & 49 FBI Agents – all culminating in a more than 400 page Report showing NO COLLUSION – why would the Democrats in Congress now need Robert Mueller…….”

… “….to testify. Are they looking for a redo because they hated seeing the strong NO COLLUSION conclusion? There was no crime, except on the other side (incredibly not covered in the Report), and NO OBSTRUCTION. Bob Mueller should not testify. No redos for the Dems!”

— EXCLUSIVE: POMPEO PUSHES BACK ON CHINA AND RUSSIA … BLAKE HOUNSHELL: “The Trump administration is making a big show this week of boosting its presence in the Arctic, a region the president’s team sees as ‘an arena of global power and competition,’ as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will put it in a speech Monday in Finland. ‘Just because the Arctic is a place of wilderness does not mean it should become a place of lawlessness,’ he’ll say …

“Pompeo’s address … will go right at China, calling out what the U.S. sees as Beijing’s increasingly malign activities all over the world, and at Russia, long a dominant Arctic player. ‘Do we want the Arctic Ocean to transform into a new South China Sea, fraught with militarization and competing territorial claims?’ Pompeo will ask.

“‘Under President Trump, we are fortifying America’s security and diplomatic presence’ in the Arctic, Pompeo will declare. ‘On the security side, partly in response to Russia’s destabilizing activities, we are hosting military exercises, strengthening our force presence, rebuilding our icebreaker fleet, expanding Coast Guard funding, and creating a new senior military post for Arctic Affairs.’” POLITICO

— CNBC’S KAYLA TAUSCHE (@kaylatausche): “Two sources briefed on US/China trade talks said Vice Premier Liu He and his 100-person delegation may cancel negotiations in DC this week — which US officials previously had said could yield a deal by Friday — after President Trump’s tariff escalation on Twitter.” … WSJ story

NYT’S SHANGHAI BUREAU CHIEF KEITH BRADSHER: “Mr. Liu’s plans were unclear as of Monday. At a daily news conference on Monday, Geng Shuang, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, said a team of Chinese trade negotiators was still planning a trip to Washington. Still, Mr. Geng declined to say when the visit might take place or whether Mr. Liu would be on it.” NYT

— GET READY FOR A TRADE WAR-FUELED MARKET DIP … FT: “China’s CSI 300 index of major Shanghai- and Shenzhen-listed stocks on Monday tumbled as much as 6.1 per cent before pulling back to be down 5.5 per cent, putting the benchmark on track for its worst day since February 2016. S&P 500 futures fell as much as 2.1 per cent while in Europe Frankfurt’s Xetra Dax index was down 1.4 per cent and the CAC 40 fell 1.5 per cent in early trading.” FT

AP: “U.S. dispatched aircraft carrier to send message to Iran,” by Robert Burns and Catherine Lucey: “A White House decision to dispatch an aircraft carrier and other military resources to send a message to Iran followed ‘clear indications’ that Iranian and Iranian proxy forces were preparing to possibly attack U.S. forces in the region, a defense official told the Associated Press.

“The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information, said the Pentagon approved the deployments and that U.S. forces at sea and on land were thought to be the potential targets. The official declined to be more specific.

“White House national security adviser John Bolton said in a statement Sunday night that the U.S. is deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the U.S. Central Command region, an area that includes the Middle East.” AP

BACKGROUND READING: The High-Stakes Confrontation Between Trump and Khamenei,”by Karim Sadjadpour in The Atlantic

— HEADS UP … CBS SET TO ANNOUNCE NEW ANCHOR LINEUP … NYT’S JOHN KOBLIN and MIKE GRYNBAUM: “Gayle King … would be the centerpiece of [new CBS News president Susan] Zirinsky’s revamped ‘CBS This Morning.’ John Dickerson, an anchor since 2018, would slide over to ‘60 Minutes,’ according to four of the people familiar with the plans.

“Norah O’Donnell, Ms. King’s other co-anchor, is the likely contender to take over ‘CBS Evening News,’ replacing Jeff Glor, who has been in the job for 18 months, the people said. … Ms. Zirinsky is expected to pair Ms. King on ‘CBS This Morning’ with Anthony Mason, who currently hosts the show’s Saturday edition, and Tony Dokoupil, a network correspondent who is married to the NBC News star Katy Tur.” NYT

— IT SEEMS POSSIBLE that CBS could move the evening news to D.C., according to most reporting on the shakeup.

Good Monday morning. MICHAEL COHEN is going to prison today, per AP: “Once he gets to prison, Cohen will undergo medical and mental health screenings and be assigned a job, such as mowing the grounds or cleaning up the visiting room. He’ll also get sets of clothing, bedding and towels.

“At the prison camp, about 115 inmates sleep in bunks lined up in barrack-style halls, instead of individual or two-man cells like in higher-security facilities. Recreational amenities include tennis courts, horseshoes and bocce ball.” AP

WHAT’S ON PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S MIND — @realDonaldTrump at 11:05 p.m.: “Despite the tremendous success that I have had as President, including perhaps the greatest ECONOMY and most successful first two years of any President in history, they have stolen two years of my (our) Presidency (Collusion Delusion) that we will never be able to get back…..” … “…..The Witch Hunt is over but we will never forget. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

NANCY COOK: “Mulvaney aims for ‘more proactive, less reactive’ Trump message”: “Now four months into the job, Mulvaney — who has taken a light touch towards managing Trump himself — has made pumping up the White House’s communications machine a top priority. The communications and press strategy is something Mulvaney and President Trump talk about almost every day, Mulvaney told POLITICO, and he believes that even a president who dominates the media on a daily basis needs more forceful messaging and more messengers, especially now that a hostile Democratic House and some two dozen Democratic candidates are blitzing him nonstop.

“‘We’ll spend a little more time being proactive, and a little less time being reactive,’ Mulvaney told POLITICO in an interview about his plans to fine-tune of the White House communications and press shop. ‘We’ve got a great message to sell. We want to talk about the economy. We want to talk about healthcare. We want to talk about trade, so if we can try to drive the narrative a little bit more, we think that would be a valuable improvement.’” POLITICO

— KEY GRAPH: “He also does not intend to fill the slot vacated by the former White House deputy chief of staff, Bill Shine, who was brought in to oversee communications but left after roughly eight months. Shine was the fifth White House staffer to serve as Trump’s communications director in roughly two-and-half years after Sean Spicer, Mike Dubke, Anthony Scaramucci and Hope Hicks resigned, or flamed out.”

WHAT’S FORMER SEN. AL FRANKEN UP TO? … FRANKEN has been on the political sidelines since he was shoved out of office after a spate of accusations that he was inappropriate with women. But last week, he sent out an email to his political supporters with this message: “It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch with you.” The email was meant to raise money for the “Bug-O-Nay-Ge-Shig School at the Leech Lake Reservation” in Minnesota.

FRANKEN raised $70,000 for the school. Here’s a video he plans to release today.

FIRST IN PLAYBOOK — NUMBERS USA is spending more than $500,000 on a national ad buy on Fox News and Fox Business News (and also CNN in the D.C. area) through May 31 that will feature “Never Trumpers” like the Koch brothers, former Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. The message: reducing immigration is key to putting American workers’ needs first and increasing wages. The ad

2020 WATCH — THE NEW JOE BIDEN … NATASHA KORECKI in Columbia, S.C.: “On campaign trail, Biden keeps his hands to himself”: “There‘s been no hair-sniffing. No nose-to-cheek nuzzles. No intimate whispers with strangers. In his first full week on the road for his 2020 candidacy, Joe Biden is keeping his hands to himself.

“Biden joined the race on the heels of a rough period in which six women publicly complained that Biden’s past touching made them uncomfortable. From his slow response to the controversy and the lack of apology, it wasn’t quite clear if the 76-year-old former vice president could adjust to the realities of campaigning in the #MeToo era — or if the criticism of the overly familiar physical contact even registered.

“But after nearly a week on the campaign trail, including nearly a half-dozen events in Pittsburgh, Iowa and South Carolina, it appears Biden got the message. Gone are the episodes of canoodling with voters, replaced by a less tactile brand of retail politicking marked by selfies and more physical reserve than Biden is accustomed to.” POLITICO

— “Harris assails Trump for hateful rhetoric,” by Chris Cadelago: “Kamala Harris intensified her frontal assault on Donald Trump late Sunday, condemning the president for attacking communities of color and denigrating African countries with ‘foul language no president should speak.’

“Harris, decamping from her brand-reinforcing battering of Attorney General Bill Barr, singled out Trump’s response to the violent marchers in Charlottesville, Va. ‘It’s time we had a president who’s not scared to call neo-Nazi violence what it is: domestic terrorism,’ the Democratic presidential hopeful told thousands at the NAACP’s Freedom Fund dinner reception in Detroit.” POLITICO

THE JUICE …

— NEW: DARIN MILLER, who has led comms and strategy for the Freedom Caucus for the last few years, is joining VP MIKE PENCE’S staff today to be deputy press secretary and director of strategic communications. Miller is a Hill vet, works well with the D.C. press corps and has been through the ringer with the HFC. He’ll join a fellow former HFC’er — Alyssa Farah — on Pence’s staff.

— DEMOCRATS are again trying to pry New York’s 24th district from REP. JOHN KATKO. This time, Ralston Lapp is working with Francis Conole, a veteran, who is playing up his local ties, and his military experience (Naval Academy grad, in the service after 9/11). He has not filed an FEC report yet, but we hear he has raised $100k. In a good year for Democrats, Katko could certainly be vulnerable. Hillary Clinton won his seat in 2016. But he won by 5 points in 2018. Conole’s launch video

TRUMP’S MONDAY — Trump will present the Commander-in-Chief’s trophy to the Army Black Knights, the U.S. Military Academy football team, at 12:15 p.m. in the Rose Garden. At 6 p.m., the president will present Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the Rose Garden.

NYT’S ANNIE KARNI and KEVIN DRAPER: “In Tiger Woods, Trump Finds a Hero and a Business Opportunity”: “Ever since Tiger Woods arrived on the public stage as a golf phenom at the age of 21, Donald J. Trump has been cultivating him as a celebrity who could add a sheen to his properties around the globe.

“After Mr. Woods won his first Masters title in 1997, he celebrated in Atlantic City at the Taj Mahal casino, eating pork chops and being photographed with the owner, Mr. Trump.

“Since then, Mr. Trump has named a villa after him at the Trump National Doral Miami. He has also gone into business abroad with Mr. Woods, announcing in 2014 that the golfer would design a course in Dubai as part of a luxury residential megaproject that would be managed by the Trump Organization.” NYT

AP/CHICAGO: “Red Sox manager Alex Cora won’t visit White House”: “Cora cited the Trump administration’s response to Hurricane Maria in his native Puerto Rico as the reason for his decision. ‘The government has done some things back home that are great, but we still have a long ways to go,’ he said on Sunday following a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. ‘That’s our reality. It’s pretty tough to go celebrate when we’re where we’re at. I’d rather not go and be consistent with everything.’” AP

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION — “Trump taps Mark Morgan, former Obama official who supports border wall, to head ICE,” by WaPo’s Nick Miroff, Shane Harris and Josh Dawsey: “President Trump announced his choice as director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Sunday, tapping a former FBI official who frequently appears on cable news advocating for the president’s immigration policies. …

“In Morgan, Trump has found a vocal advocate for some of his positions, particularly the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. Morgan has said such a wall would be an effective way to reduce illegal border crossings.

“Trump’s Twitter announcement that Morgan ‘will be joining the Trump administration as the head of our hard working men and women of ICE’ caught White House aides and Homeland Security officials by surprise. They had not been informed Morgan was Trump’s choice, and at ICE, senior leaders learned of the decision from the president’s tweet, according to two senior administration officials.” WaPo

EYE ON THE SKY … SEATTLE TIMES: “Long before first 737 MAX crash, Boeing knew a key sensor warning light wasn’t working, but told no one,” by Dominic Gates: “Boeing admitted Sunday that it knew well over a year before the first crash of a 737 MAX in Indonesia last October that a warning light linked to a key sensor on the 737 MAX wasn’t working on most of the airplanes, but it informed neither the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) nor the airlines operating the jet about the problem until after that crash.

“The warning light is significant because it warned of a malfunction in one of the jet’s Angle of Attack (AOA) sensors, a fault that began the sequence of events that led to both the Lion Air crash in October and the Ethiopian Airlines crash in March.

“The alert worked only on planes flown by airlines that had bought a separate and optional AOA indicator added to the main flight display panel. Boeing disclosed the existence of the problem publicly only last week after a story in the Wall Street Journal. It disclosed its prior knowledge on Sunday only after a follow-up story.

“Furthermore, even MAX operators like American Airlines that had bought the optional indicator were misinformed by Boeing last year after the Lion Air crash about how the warning light operates.” Seattle Times

AXIOS’ JONATHAN SWAN: “Inside a top Trump adviser’s fundraising mirage”: “A political organization run by David Bossie, President Trump’s former deputy campaign manager, has raised millions of dollars by saying it’s supporting Trump-aligned conservative candidates — but has spent only a tiny fraction of that money supporting candidates. …

“At least $445,972 was spent on apparent book purchases. Copies of the Presidential Coalition’s direct mailers — which Axios obtained and shared with CLC — show the organization offered people who donated above a certain amount (usually $45) a copy of one of Bossie’s books, ‘Trump’s Enemies.’” Axios

Father, Forgive Them: Protestors Chant “When I Say Aborted, You Say Fetuses” “No one is pro-abortion, they are pro-choice” is how the argument goes.  It’s repeated ad nauseam on social media platforms, broadcast interviews, and even in presidential debates.  And it’s completely false.  As I’ve written before, the term pro-choice is utterly meaningless unless the question is answered: choice to do what?  Answering that question tells everyone […] The post Father, Forgive Them: Protestors Chant “When I Say Aborted, You Say Fetuses” appeared first on The Resurgent.  Read in browser »

Regulating Facebook or Twitter is a Constitutionally Unsound and Short-Sighted Policy Here is the real slippery slope. All the major news outlets post on Facebook. If the government starts regulating Facebook or Twitter, what’s to stop them from deciding that a Fox News story is not real, but an ABC News story is? Nothing. I’d rather have Facebook carry that burden, and let the market decide where they want to get their news. What people are missing in the health care debate There’s a key point of focus too often absent in debates about federal health care policy. As much as everyone in politics gets worked about policy proposals and their implementation, the thing people aren’t paying enough attention to is how much any policy causes disruption for voters. The common ingredient with the initial passage and […] The post What people are missing in the health care debate appeared first on The Resurgent.  Read in browser »

Trump’s Canary in Putin’s Coal Mine President Trump is giving in to bullying from Vladimir Putin, and it’s a pungent stench in John Bolton’s nostrils. Forget about the campaign. Joe Biden Burned for Being Insufficiently Partisan This is depressing. ‘Open War With Israel’
Over the weekend more than 600 rockets were fired on Israeli homes and civilian spaces in 24 hours by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The Jerusalem Post reported that two jihad groups are meeting with Egyptian officials in Cairo and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight:

“Unconfirmed reports on Sunday evening claimed that Hamas has indicated its readiness for a ceasefire with Israel. Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip did not comment on the reports.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Musab al-Braim said that the “resistance was on the threshold of a new phase in repelling the [Israeli] aggression that could lead to an open war.” He said that in light of the continued “aggression on our people and the targeting of children, houses and the implementation of the policy of assassinations, we are on the threshold of this phase, and we will not have mercy on this enemy.”

Ahmed al-Mudalal, a senior Islamic Jihad official, said that the “current Zionist escalation on the Gaza Strip is a serious attempt to break the will of the Palestinian people and divert attention from the March of Return [weekly protests near the border with Israel].”

Mudalal warned that the Palestinian terror groups will not stand idly by toward the “Zionist aggression against the Palestinian people, and have the full right to respond to these attacks.”

Several U.S. Ambassadors released statements in support of Israel and their continued defense against terrorist attacks:

“Enough is enough!” read the statement, signed by U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, the U.S. special envoy for combatnig anti-Semitism, Elan Carr, and the American ambassadors to the EU, France, Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland. “The sole aim of these terrorists is to kill, maim and terrorize citizens of Israel. These actions by Hamas and Islamic Jihad are simply unconscionable. No other nation on Earth would tolerate this . . . We affirm Israel’s right to defend itself and urge all nations to call these actions out for what they are – terrorism pure and simple.”

Will Barr Be Back?
On Friday, Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler gave the Justice Department until 9 a.m. today regarding a subpoena “which called for Barr to supply the full Mueller report and underlying evidence to Congress by May 1 — or negotiate in good faith with the committee to reach a ‘reasonable accommodation..'”

More from Roll Call:

“The House GOP has sided with Trump and Barr for defying the subpoena for the full Mueller report and grand jury information, with Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the Judiciary panel, claiming that Nadler has placed “absurd demands” on the attorney general and asked him to break the law. Addressing his committee Thursday, Barr’s chair empty, Nadler framed the fight for information for his obstruction probe and other congressional investigations into Trump as a matter of constitutional magnitude.”

What I’m Reading This Week
This week I’m reading the latest from New York Times best-selling author Dale Brown, The Kremlin Strike. Don’t miss the BRIGHT Ideas interview with the author below. From the book’s description: “In this exciting, visionary, and all-too-plausible next chapter in the legendary Dale Brown’s New York Times bestselling techno-warfare series, Brad McLanahan and the Iron Wolf Squadron must fight the Russians on a dangerous, untested battlefield: outer space.”

A Case of the Mondays

Last week the First Lady hosted a group of kids at the newly renovated White House bowling alley. The renovation was funded by the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America.

On Thursday, the First Lady wore a stunning green dress and floral stilettos on the National Day of Prayer. From John Binder’s Fashion Notes:

“The dress, which features Mrs. Trump’s preferred shape of a fitted bodice and a rounded neckline, is currently sold out but previously retailed for about $2,000. Mrs. Trump showed off her slim waist by adding a thin crocodile belt in nearly the same shade of green.

As of late, Mrs. Trump has been particularly focused on vibrant, summer-ready footwear. For the Rose Garden event, she chose a pair of her favorite Christian Louboutin floral stilettos.

Avid Fashion Notes followers will remember that Mrs. Trump wore these same pumps in June 2017 with a blue Michael Kors sheath dress.”

For shoe inspiration, check out these floral platform heels or this more comfortable wedge with a similar print

For a similar kelly green dress, I love this vintage-inspired dress. For a sleeveless version, this Reformation Mary Tank Dress from Nordstrom is almost spot-on with the color.  Mondays with Melania is a weekly feature that highlights what the First Lady is doing and wearing.

BRIGHT Ideas
An Interview with Author Dale Brown

What’s your morning routine?
I usually get up around 6 am and check the weather. If it’s good weather I’ll think about going flying first thing in the morning because zephyr winds kick up in the afternoon. Otherwise I get caught up with the news and e-mails and get to work around 9 a.m. I work until 3:45 p.m., then go on the treadmill or Bowflex for about an hour until about 5 p.m., and I’m usually done for the day.

What book, movie or TV show did you last recommend to a friend?
The last book I recommended was “Extreme Ownership” by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, a book about corporate leadership by two U.S. Navy SEAL veterans. Last movie I recommended was “Vice.” I haven’t recommended any TV shows because except for news and weather I don’t watch much TV.

What’s the last picture you took on your phone?
I am the public affairs officer for my Civil Air Patrol squadron, so the last picture was of our senior members flying cadets on glider orientation flights. Here, pilot Brad Powell (r.) points out places to look for air traffic entering the traffic pattern at Minden-Tahoe Airport, Nevada.

What’s the most useful Russian phrase to know and what does it mean?
Not phrases but words: Spasibo. Thank you. Pozhaiuysta. Please.

What career advice do you most often share?
Dress for the job you want, even if it’s not the one you’re interviewing for. BRIGHT is brought to you by The Federalist.

SCOTT RASMUSSEN

ScottRasmussen.com Launch – Check Out My All New Website No Images? Click here   Good morning,Seventy-nine percent (79%) of voters believe that overall success in life is determined by the decisions each individual makes. Just 12% believe success is determined primarily by forces beyond their control and 9% say it’s a matter of luck.An even larger number–84%– believe that overall happiness is determined primarily by the decisions we make. Most also see individual decision making as the primary factor in political views (85%); jobs and careers (82%); and, personal finances (81%). Slightly smaller numbers believe that is true about our health (68%) and intelligence (66%).On one major decision facing younger Americans, many now question whether the economic benefits of a college degree can be justified by the cost of getting that degree. Only 40% believe that just about anyone with a college degree should be able to earn enough money to pay back their loans. Sixty percent (60%) say that’s not true. Those with a college degree are evenly divided on the question. Shifting gears, 55% of voters nationwide consider Opioid Abuse to be a crisis in the United States. That’s the highest total measured for any issue surpassing the 53% who consider Political Corruption to be a crisis. The new survey also found that 49% consider gun violence to be a crisis and 43% say the same about homelessness.Fifty-seven percent (57%) of voters consider it likely that the development of new technologies will solve the major problems associated with climate change and global warming. A smaller but still significant number–41%–believe that new government regulations will solve those problems.Two-thirds of voters (66%) are unwilling to pay more than $100 a year to address climate change. That includes 40% who are unwilling to pay anything. There’s also little appetite for cutting back on energy use. Just 21% believe it is more important for Americans to conserve energy than for companies to find environmentally-friendly ways to generate the energy we need. The survey results suggest that voters expect innovation rather than regulation will address the major challenges associated with climate change and global warming.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott     Stay Informed Up To The Minute and Share ContentDeeper CurrentsScott Rasmussen offers his personal insight, analysis, and opinion on current political races, issues, and controversy. I would tell you, he stood out,” she told CBS News “As a soldier, we understand what it means to make the ultimate sacrifice.” God bless this soldier, and may he forever rest in peace.” David Gerstman: “Remember Mahmoud al-Mabhouh? He was a Hamas operative reportedly killed by the Mossad in his hotel room in Dubai in 2010. It appears that Israel has now killed one of his successors. Prof. Jacobson blogged that the IDF killed Hamed Ahmed Abed Khudari in an airstrike over the weekend. According to the IDF, Khudari “smuggled large amounts of cash from Iran to Islamic Jihad and Hamas, providing the cash-strapped terrorist groups with much-needed foreign currency.” Well, the terror groups may be cash-strapped, but their leaders certainly aren’t. But for all of the deprivation we hear about in Gaza, Hamas does not seem to lack for funds to build a huge arsenal.” Vijeta Uniyal: “The open-doors immigration policy will lead to a European “Islamic caliphate,” Italian deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini warned voters ahead of the EU election. “For our children, to leave behind an Islamic caliphate with sharia law in our cities is not something I want to do and I’m going to do everything in my power to avert this sad ending for Europe,” he vowed.” Miriam Elman: “An entire Department at New York University has decided to impose an academic boycott on the university’s study abroad program with Tel Aviv University (TAU). Only they are not calling it an academic boycott or even linked to BDS. That’s completely disingenuous, as I mentioned in my remarks to the Algemeiner, which covered the story. The key rationale for the ‘pledge of non-cooperation’ with TAU draws on the talking points of the national campaign to shutter US-Israel study abroad programs. And the faculty member spearheading the effort (NYU’s Andrew Ross) is an advisory board member of the US Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (USACBI), which launched the anti-study abroad campaign a year ago. He and his boycotting buddies must think we were born yesterday.”                   Legal Insurrection Foundation is a Rhode Island tax-exempt corporation established exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code to educate and inform the public on legal, historical, economic, academic, and cultural issues related to the Constitution, liberty, and world events. THE PRE-BARR LEAKS ARE COMING NOW
For the past month, the anticipation among the set of journalists who got the Russia collusion hoax story right – including those who led our award-winning coverage at The Federalist – has been that Attorney General Bill Barr’s review of the initial beginnings of the Trump probe under the Obama administration would be particularly revelatory. It’s understandable to expect not just that the review would turn up very questionable activity extending to the highest ranks of the FBI and the DOJ, but that it would also lead to purposeful leaks to try and get out ahead of the bad news Barr will uncover.

MEET THE PRESS

Image

From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann

FIRST READ:  Dems lose their enthusiasm advantage, per NBC/WSJ poll

Democrats had two advantages that fueled their midterm victories in November 2018 – an edge in enthusiasm and success with independent voters.

Six months later, just one of those advantages remains.

In the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 75 percent of registered Republican voters say they have high interest in the 2020 presidential election – registering a “9” or “10” on a 10-point scale – versus 73 percent of Democratic voters who say the same thing.

That’s quite a change from the 2018 cycle, when Democrats held a double-digit lead on this question until the last two months before the election, when the GOP closed the gap but still trailed the Dems in enthusiasm.

Image

It’s just one poll, but the numbers are a reminder that presidentials are always different than midterm cycles.

And they should correct any Dem thinking that assumes – “Hey, we have Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in the bag because we won there in 2018” – since GOP enthusiasm now is much higher.

Oh, one other thing: Overall enthusiasm for 2020 is SKY-HIGH, with 69 percent of all voters expressing a high level of interest in the upcoming election.

That’s just 3 points shy of the 72 percent who said the same thing in October 2016.

And we are still more than 500 days away from the 2020 general election.

So, yeah, turnout in 2020 is going to be through the roof.

Independents aren’t with Democrats on impeachment

As for independents, President Trump still has a big problem with them.

  • His approval rating among indies is 38 percent (versus 46 percent overall);
  • Just 34 percent have a positive view of him (versus 39 percent overall);
  • And only a combined 28 percent of them say they are enthusiastic or comfortable when it comes to his re-election (versus 41 percent overall).

But the danger for Democrats: Independents aren’t with them on impeachment of Trump.

A plurality of indies – 45 percent – say Congress should NOT hold impeachment hearings, compared with 19 percent of them who believe there’s enough evidence to begin impeachment proceedings NOW.

Thirty-four percent take the middle ground: Congress should continue investigating to see if there’s enough evidence to hold impeachment hearings in the future.

Among all Americans, 48 percent oppose impeachment hearings, while a combined 49 percent want them now or possibly in the future if there’s enough evidence.

As NBC/WSJ co-pollster Peter Hart puts it, “The American public has reached a hung jury – not innocent, not guilty and they haven’t reached a consensus.”

Trump’s busy weekend on Twitter

Meanwhile, President Trump had a, well, interesting weekend on Twitter.

He praised Vladimir Putin after his phone call with Russia’s leader (who interfered in the 2016 presidential election): “Tremendous potential for a good/great relationship with Russia.”

He praised Kim Jong-Un (despite North Korea’s new missile test): “He also knows that I am with him & does not want to break his promise to me.”

He said Robert Mueller shouldn’t testify before Congress (contradicting his earlier statement that the decision should be up to AG William Barr).

He accused Democrats of stealing two years of his presidency.

He took issue with the disqualification at the Kentucky Derby.

He howled at Twitter/Facebook banning James Woods and 9/11 conspiracy theorist Paul Watson from their platforms

And he questioned why Twitter/Facebook hasn’t banned the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN and MSNBC.

2020 VISION: Breaking down Bennet’s appearance on “Meet”

Yesterday, one of us interviewed the latest entrant into the presidential race on “Meet the Press” – Michael Bennet.

Bennet on why he’s needed in an already crowded field:

“I think we need somebody who’s going to level with the American people about why our system doesn’t seem to work for them… I’ve had two tough elections in a swing state, out in the middle of the country, where I think we feel pretty ignored by what people on the coasts are saying. And third, I’ve got a record, in the Senate, of a lot of bipartisan results.”

On whether Trump should be impeached

“I mean, to me, it seems fairly clear, from the evidence, that he has committed impeachable offenses. But we need to go through a process here and see if the American people can be convinced that that’s actually the right outcome.”

And on his vote NOT to filibuster Gorsuch

“The reason I said we shouldn’t filibuster Gorsuch was very simple. Gorsuch was a trade of Scalia for Gorsuch. And we allowed Mitch McConnell to invoke — not only allowed him, gave him every opportunity to use the nuclear option on Gorsuch, instead of waiting for it — forcing him to wait, for Kavanaugh.”

On the campaign trail today: Beto O’Rourke continues to stump in Iowa… Amy Klobuchar and Julian Castro campaign in New Hampshire… Pete Buttigieg stays in South Carolina… Kirsten Gillibrand travels to Nevada… And Kamala Harris holds a teacher roundtable in Michigan.

DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 53 percent.

53 percent.

That’s the share of Americans who say the Electoral College should be abolished in favor of a national popular vote, according to new data released this morning from our NBC/WSJ poll.

But respondents’ 2016 votes also have a lot to do with their answers.

An overwhelming 78 percent of Hillary Clinton voters support a national popular vote for president, while an equally overwhelming 74 percent of Trump voters want to keep the status quo in place.

Tweet of the day: RIP, Stan Collender

As Michael Cohen heads to prison, there’s a lesson here: Never trust a Democrat Posted: 06 May 2019 04:26 AM PDT Democrats have built a reputation as proponents of criminal justice reform with efforts to reduce sentences and gain early releases for violent criminals, drug dealers, and illegal immigrants. 05/06/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Correcting Krugman; Census Hysteria; Sloppy Track, Muddy Result By Carl M. Cannon on May 06, 2019 09:31 am
Good morning, it’s Monday, May 6, 2019. This was a busy weekend, what with May the Fourth, Cinco de Mayo, and the Kentucky Derby all taking place. The derby, as you may have heard, ended in controversy when the winning horse was disqualified and placed 17th. It was a result that outraged horse-racing fans, including Donald J. Trump, who (you won’t be surprised to hear) took to Twitter in protest. “It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch,” the president tweeted. “Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby — not even close!” Notwithstanding his perplexing allusion to political correctness, the First Fan is right: Country House, the long shot who finished second and was awarded the win, was no match for front-running Maximum Security, the colt who crossed the finish line two lengths in front. So how could a horse be taken down after leading the field the entire way? I’ll answer that question in a moment, while also reprising the finish of the 1933 Kentucky Derby, which was every bit as contentious as this year’s, in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Paul Krugman Gets the Democratic Primary All Wrong. Bill Scher defends the bipartisan efforts made by the Obama/Biden administration, which Krugman sees as the wrong model for the party to follow in 2020 and beyond. Census Isn’t a Threat to the Nation; Anti-Trump Hysteria Is. Frank Miele makes the case for including a question about whether residents are U.S. citizens. Biden’s Union Bond: Strained by His China Dismissal? Phil Wegmann has the story. When It Comes to China, Sleepy Joe Biden Is Still Snoozing. Curtis Ellis assails the former vice president for failing to recognize predatory Chinese trade practices and human rights abuses. Mueller Got More Attention Than Sri Lanka, Notre Dame Combined. Daniel Bassali asserts that the campaign’s outreach was underestimated in 2016 and could be again — to Democrats’ detriment. Is Corporate Vigilantism a Threat to Democracy? Nick Dedeke argues that practices enacted by PayPal, Mastercard and Visa have taken civic activism too far. Perils of a GOP Alternative to the Green New Deal. In RealClearMarkets, Benjamin Zycher warns that any proposal, if enacted, would result in great economic cost with no environmental benefit. Advanced Manufacturing: A Market Opportunity for Nuclear Power? In RealClearEnergy, Thomas A. Hemphill looks at  promising new developments. The Crisis of Loneliness. RealClearPolicy’s “American Project” series continues with Francie Hart Broghammer’s examination of the isolation that occurs in society despite our immersion in technology intended to connect us. * * * If the president of the United States thinks horse racing is rough and tumble now, he should have been at Churchill Downs on this date in 1933. That race, known as the “Fighting Finish,” featured two jockeys in hand-to-hand combat as they crossed the finish line. It was a dispute they resumed in the jockeys’ changing room with their fists, a rumpus finally broken up by sportswriters and other riders. The fracas started during the stretch run, a bit later in the race than this year’s trouble, when 18-year-old jockey Don Meade sent his horse Brokers Tip through a narrow opening on the inside, pulling alongside front-running Head Play. Herb Fisher, the 22-year-old rider aboard Head Play, didn’t appreciate Meade’s shortcut, and he pinned Brokers Tip on the rail. Meade pushed Fisher away, and soon both riders were whipping and pushing each other. Fisher tried to pull Meade off by grabbing his saddlecloth; Meade grabbed Fisher by the arm, which is how they crossed the finish line. Although the technology was available (and can still be accessed), Churchill Downs didn’t use photos to determine the winner in those days, and the stewards awarded the victory to Brokers Tip. This result outraged Herb Fisher, who believed (a) that his mount crossed the finish line first; and (b) Meade had fouled him in any event, and should have been taken down. It didn’t happen, though, and such an outcome wouldn’t take place until May 4, 2019. The short answer to the stewards’ stunning decision at Churchill Downs on Saturday is that horses are required by the rules of thoroughbred racing to stay in their lane, even though no such lane markings exist. They can switch paths, but only without endangering other horses or impeding their progress. But as Maximum Security rounded the final turn and headed into the stretch, he did both. With jockey Luis Saez aboard, the horse suddenly drifted outward into the path of War of Will, who was making his move. Trying to avoid a collision, War of Will’s rider, Tyler Gaffalione, reined his horse to the right, causing him to bump Long Range Toddy, who was also surging forward. Country House, outside of them both, veered away from trouble, and was uncompromised. So, it was a foul on Maximum Security, but here’s where things get subjective. Did it impact the result of the race? If so, what’s the proper remedy? To me, the answer to the first question was clear: No, it did not change the outcome of the race. Yes, Long Range Toddy was checked briefly, but that horse, who didn’t really belong in the derby, faded to 17th — in a 19-horse field. War of Will also didn’t “want the distance,” as they say in racing, and finished eighth. The best horses finished 1,2,3,4. So why did Maximum Security veer outward? This often occurs with tiring horses. It also happens sometimes on sloppy footing, which was the condition of the Churchill Downs track on Saturday. Luis Saez himself thought his 3-year-old horse, which he described — not unsympathetically — as “a baby,” veered outward when he heard the roar of the crowd of 150,000 people. Whatever the cause, it was dangerous, and it came at a time when thoroughbred racing is under tremendous scrutiny because of horses breaking down on tracks and being euthanized. (Come to think of it, this is what President Trump must have been alluding to with his aside about “political correctness.”) But when it came to Maximum Security’s foul — and it was a foul — what should the racing stewards have done about it? They could have fined the jockey or suspended him for some period of time for “careless riding,” which are remedies often applied. But here was the problem: No one blamed Saez for what happened. His horse veered out suddenly on a muddy track, and just as suddenly, the rider corrected it. He’s not known as a reckless rider; quite the contrary. And he knows the dangers of his sport as well as anyone: Four-and-a-half years ago, his younger brother — a 17-year-old apprentice jockey — was killed in a spill on an Indiana racetrack. What the three Churchill Downs stewards should have done in my opinion was say a silent prayer of thanks that the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby produced a worthy champion who made one misstep — and that his error didn’t result in disaster. Instead, they took 22 minutes to take the horse down, inexplicably placing Maximum Security 17th behind Long Range Toddy; then they waited another two hours to read a written statement, and took no questions. It seemed like a travesty to millions of fans, and it cost me a lucrative exacta payout. But at least it didn’t end in a brawl in the jockeys’ room.  Carl M. Cannon
