Friday, May 3, 2019 2020 Update “A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS after Biden’s announcement [last] Thursday shows 39% of voters who are Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents saying he is their top choice for the nomination, up from 28% who said the same in March.” CNN “16 Democratic candidates have now qualified for the first two primary debates this summer.” FiveThirtyEight From the Left The left is not keen on Biden, highlighting other qualified candidates. “In my conversations with voters — even those who said they felt strong affection for Mr. Biden — it was pretty clear that practicality, not passion, was the driving force in their support for the former vice president. It was a sentiment that seemed to transcend age, gender and ideological orientation… [But] pragmatic support is generally not the stuff of winning presidential bids. (See: Romney, Mitt; Clinton, Hillary; Kerry, John.) Of course, given how badly Democrats want President Trump out of office, that instinct to follow their hearts could certainly play out differently this cycle. But with 21 candidates running (oh hey, Senator Michael Bennet!), voters certainly have plenty of time to play the field.” Lisa Lerer, New York Times “In the country’s most diverse candidate pool ever, with several people running on ambitious plans to remake systems of power that have facilitated the exploitation of generations of Americans, Biden has stepped in to add—what, exactly? A promise to return the country to the good ol’ days? He doesn’t seem to realize, or care, that those days weren’t all that good for massive swaths of the electorate. Instead of attempting to chart a bold American future, Biden is peddling a gussied-up version of America’s past.” Christina Cauterucci, Slate By contrast, “Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is dominating the ‘ideas primary.’ In the age of tweet and Trump, Warren is betting that voters want substance. Though she’s often grouped ideologically with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Warren has gone far beyond the core agenda derived from his 2016 challenge, issuing a new policy plan virtually every week. Warren’s bold structural reforms seek to transform a system she sees as rigged for the wealthy and well-connected—one many voters view the same way.” Robert L. Borosage, The Week “Warren believes in eliminating tax ‘getaways’ for the ultra-wealthy, empowering people of color, ensuring that every citizen has the right to vote, and abolishing the Electoral College so every vote counts. She wants to begin a Green New Deal that banishes subsidies for fossil fuel companies, shore up our legal system so all Americans can truly have ‘equal justice under law,’ support family farmers so they can compete fairly with big corporations, and break up big tech companies… Warren can fulfill the promise of Obama’s ‘Yes We Can,’ with the added oath: ‘I’ve got a plan.’ We need only show up for her to make it so.” Elis de Guerre, Independent Others note that “Sens. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) may have had their breakout moments of the campaign on Wednesday… Both former prosecutors, the pair of Senate Democrats once again (see their exchanges with Brett Kavanaugh during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing) demonstrated their ability to perfectly grill a Trump administration official… Biden on Wednesday pledged to visit all of Iowa’s 99 counties, an intensive and time-consuming process that would be decidedly harder for a sitting senator. But Harris and Klobuchar illustrated the power that comes from going toe-to-toe with top officials on live TV, the closest anyone will come to debating Trump himself until fall 2020.” Jacqueline Alemany, Washington Post From the Right The right is focused on Biden, given his lead in the polls. “What made Biden’s announcement bounce so large? One could say he took a page from Trump by focusing his announcement on what angered his party the most. Biden focused almost entirely on opposition to Trump and examples of some of the most controversial moments of the Trump presidency, particularly his response to the 2017 white nationalist rally in Charlottesville.” Arnon Mishkin, Fox News “Biden is not only leading, but he’s leading across all demographics. He gets 39% of women voters and 25% of younger voters. And yet the political chattering class keeps telling us he’s not young enough and hip enough to appeal to the Millennials. But the most important stat is this: 56% of voters think Biden has the best chance to beat Trump. And that is going to be the most important issue in 2020.” Merrie Soltis, Washington Examiner Skeptics, however, argue that “Biden is a candidate who was best suited to run for the nomination not in 2020 but in 2016, when he could have run as someone to safeguard Obama’s legacy. He has been out of office for four years, after working in Washington continuously for over 40 years. His candidacy will have to rely on looking back in time when most Democratic voters want to look forward. Biden is an establishmentarian in a populist wave fueled even more by resentment over the right-leaning populism behind Donald Trump’s ascendancy. He is, to put it bluntly, an old white male politician in a party that puts identity politics at the core of its message.” Edward Morrissey, The Week “Biden’s entry into the race for the Democratic presidential nomination has opened up a division in the party, and it’s not just about the candidates’ demographic characteristics or policy records. It’s about their view of our country. Biden’s left-wing critics think he’s soft on the banks and on accused sexual harassers. But they also think he’s soft on America itself… There are plenty of reasons to oppose Biden, from his spotty record on due process to his bad judgment on foreign policy. But he’s not going to pay a price for being too rosy-eyed about America, and he shouldn’t.” Ramesh Ponnuru, Bloomberg “[Biden’s] problem is simple: He has a record. That record is long and checkered. And that means that Biden has spent the first months of his undeclared campaign apologizing… The power of positive thinking trumps years of experience. After all, you don’t have to worry about what Mayor Pete Buttigieg has done since he’s never done anything. But you do have to worry about Joe Biden’s record being rehashed. That’s why Biden’s best weeks may be his first weeks. As his record reemerges, as other Democrats dig into his past for dirt, Biden will have to get used to saying he’s sorry and then hope that Democratic voters choose to take him back.” Ben Shapiro, Daily Wire “Former vice president Joe Biden declaring that the figures running the Chinese government are ‘not bad folks’ and that ‘they’re not competition to us’ has to be the most jaw-dropping assessment of a world power since Gerald Ford’s 1976 assessment that ‘There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford administration.’” Jim Geraghty, National Review On the bright side… Burger King ‘Unhappy Meals’ capture all the feels from pissed to YAAAS. POLITICO PLAYBOOK
POLITICO Playbook: Finally, a New York Times story Trump will like
By BLAKE HOUNSHELL and DANIEL LIPPMAN
05/03/2019 06:08 AM EDT
Presented by
DRIVING THE DAY
SPOTTED: A.G. BILL BARR refused to testify Thursday before the House Judiciary Committee, but he held court at the D.C. lunch hotspot Tosca for at least two hours.
Playbook asked GEORGE CONWAY why he thought Barr had taken on the job of defending the president. “I have no theory,” he said. “I am at a complete and utter loss to explain it.”
— “Trump finds in Barr the attorney general — and shield — he long sought,” by WaPo’s Matt Zapotosky, Josh Dawsey, Tom Hamburger and Ashley Parker: “For a time, President Trump was reluctant to select William P. Barr as his attorney general. The veteran Justice Department official from the George H.W. Bush administration was not a longtime Trump loyalist, and the president wondered whether one of his own political allies might serve better as a shield, people familiar with the matter said. …
“Trump, who spent a few hours at most with Barr before picking him as attorney general, told people that he was pleased with Barr’s pugnacious performance before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, though one Trump ally who regularly speaks with the president said his joy was ‘shortsighted’ because Barr lost credibility with some lawmakers who could be useful later. …
“A White House official said that Barr had ‘set the narrative’ in a way that was positive for the White House …
“Trump campaign advisers, who said they had raised more than $1 million after the Mueller report was released, said the attorney general’s comments have generally been helpful — especially his earlier assertion that there was ‘spying’ during the 2016 presidential race.” WaPo
MAYBE THERE WAS SPYING? — “F.B.I. Sent Investigator Posing as Assistant to Meet With Trump Aide in 2016,” by NYT’s Adam Goldman, Michael Schmidt and Mark Mazzetti: “The conversation at a London bar in September 2016 took a strange turn when the woman sitting across from George Papadopoulos, a Trump campaign adviser, asked a direct question: Was the Trump campaign working with Russia?
“The woman had set up the meeting to discuss foreign policy issues. But she was actually a government investigator posing as a research assistant, according to people familiar with the operation. The F.B.I. sent her to London as part of the counterintelligence inquiry opened that summer to better understand the Trump campaign’s links to Russia.” NYT
TRUMP SAYS NO TO MCGAHN TESTIMONY … ANITA KUMAR: “Congress shouldn’t be looking anymore. This is all. It’s done,” Trump told Fox News. “Nobody has ever done what I’ve done. I’ve given total transparency. It’s never happened before like this. They shouldn’t be looking anymore. It’s done.” POLITICO
JARED’S MIDEAST PEACE PREVIEW — The first son-in-law sat for a rare public interview Thursday night with Rob Satloff of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. No real news, but here are some highlights:
— The plan is “more of an in-depth operational document.”
— “If you say ‘two-state’ [solution], it means one thing to the Israelis, it means one thing to the Palestinians. So we said, you know, let’s just not say it.”
— “People will be surprised what’s in it, but I hope they react rationally.”
— “We’ve had a leaky environment here in Washington where a lot of things leak, but nothing’s leaked from my team.”
— On Trump: “He’s not going to allow you to pretend like something’s solved when it’s not solved. His view is we should either solve it or admit that it’s not solved.”
— On Obama:“We came into what we felt was a strategy-free environment.”
— BEST EXCHANGE … KUSHNER: “If we fail, we don’t want to fail the way it has been done in the past.” SATLOFF: “You want to be original in your failure.”
— MONEY QUOTE: “When you work for a president you try not to disappoint. Sometimes you disappoint. When you work for your father-in-law you can’t disappoint.” Watch the video
Good Friday morning. Blake Hounshell with Daniel Lippman here, filling in for Jake and Anna. They’ll be back Saturday for all your Playbooking needs. Thanks for reading.
2020 WATCH — The online left seems to be awakening to the very real possibility that JOE BIDEN will win the Democratic nomination, and they’re not happy. On Thursday, a years-old clip of Biden praising Dick Cheney circulated endlessly on Twitter, prompting groans and rebukes from progressives. Meanwhile, BERNIE SANDERS is gearing up to take on Biden.
Biden has avoided engaging attacks from his left, but that might not be sustainable much longer.
A message from the American Beverage Association:
America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar. Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi are offering more great tasting choices than ever before with less sugar or no sugar at all, smaller portion sizes, clear calorie labels and reminders to Think Balance.
RED ALERT IN FRANKFORT … ALEX ISENSTADT: “Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin is a presidential phone-buddy and White House regular who’s become one of President Donald Trump’s loudest surrogates.
“He’s also one of the most unpopular governors in the country, facing a treacherous reelection in November. And the White House, fearing that an embarrassing loss in a deep-red state would stoke doubts about the president’s own ability to win another term, is preparing to go all-in to save him.
“Vice President Mike Pence, who recently flew to Lexington to raise money for the governor, is scheduled to headline a gala dinner hosted by Bevin on Friday evening. On Saturday, Bevin will air his first TV ad during the Kentucky Derby — expected to be a Trump-themed spot packed with footage of the president.” POLITICO
WHAT KELLYANNE IS READING — “Beto O’Rourke Blew It,” by Margaret Carlson in The Daily Beast
MILESTONE — @adamwren: “.@PeteButtigieg just reached a million followers. He had something like 60,000 a few short months ago.”
A message from the American Beverage Association:
Three competitors—Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi—are working together to reduce sugar consumed from beverages. That’s a big deal.
TRUMP’S FRIDAY — The president will have lunch with Secretary of State MIKE POMPEO at 12:30 p.m. Then at 1:45 p.m., he’ll greet Slovak Prime Minister PETER PELLEGRINI. They’ll hold a bilateral meeting in the Oval Office, followed by a larger meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House.
The White House says Trump and Pellegrini will discuss “recent, positive gains in bilateral security cooperation
[read: NATO defense spending]
as well as our shared concerns on cyber threats and the importance of energy security.” The meeting is one of a series the Trump team is holding with Central European leaders as part of its effort to counter the growing influence of China and Russia in the region.

THE REVOLUTION WAS ALREADY TELEVISED … POLITICO Magazine’s Friday Cover: “Bernie Sanders Had His Own TV Show. We Found the Archives,” by Holly Otterbein: “This isBernie Sanders, [Burlington’s] socialist mayor, and for whatever reason, he wants to talk about drugs.
‘Do any of the older kids you know have some problems with drugs?’ Sanders asks. ‘Who wants to talk to me about that? What about drugs? Is that a problem?’
‘I like coke!’ a little boy who looks 10 or 12 exclaims.
‘Tell me about that,’ Sanders says.
‘I like Coca-Cola!’ the boy clarifies.
‘Oh, Coca-Cola. Alright, but who knows about cocaine?’ Sanders asks. ‘Anyone ever seen cocaine?’ …
Sanders changes the subject to cigarettes. ‘Who here smokes?’ he asks. ‘Come on, raise your hand.’ A child, sitting in an adult’s lap, responds: ‘I don’t smoke because I’m a little kid. I’m only 5 years old.’”
MOORE TICK-TOCK — “Trump Won’t Nominate Stephen Moore for Fed Board,” by the NYT’s Jim Tankersley, Maggie Haberman and Emily Cochrane:“Several senators relayed … concerns to the White House this week and made clear that Mr. Moore did not have the votes to clear the Republican-controlled Senate. …
“Mr. Trump’s decision to cut Mr. Moore loose appeared to come as a surprise to his potential nominee, who had spent the morning telling several news media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, that he would not withdraw and that he retained the full backing of the White House, which was ‘all in.’ …
“Mr. Trump told reporters he planned to nominate Mr. Moore and Mr. Cain before White House officials had performed a traditional background check, including reviewing writings, finances and past public controversies.”
— YOWZERS: “‘Read people’s articles that they write,’ [advised] Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Republican of West Virginia. That, she said, ‘would be a good start.’” NYT
— OK … Moore on why he told The Wall Street Journal he wasn’t pulling out only minutes before doing so: “You may think I misled you. But it is what it is.” WSJ

SHOT … Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), April 28 WSJ op-ed: “Trump’s Tariffs End or His Trade Deal Dies”
… CHASER — @realDonaldTrump, May 2 tweet: “Congrats to @U_S_Steel for investing $1+ BILLION in America’s most INNOVATIVE steel mill. 232 Tariffs make Pennsylvania and USA more prosperous/secure by bringing Steel and Aluminum industries BACK. Tariffs are working. Pittsburgh is again The Steel City. USA Economy is BOOMING!”
— THE FULL STORY: “GOP smacks Trump on trade,” by Burgess Everett and Marianne LeVine
YIKES: “Pig ‘Ebola’ Virus Sends Shock Waves Through Global Food Chain,” by Bloomberg’s Dan Murtaugh and Enda Curran: “While official estimates count 1 million culled hogs, slaughter data suggest 100 times more will be removed from China’s 440 million-strong swine herd in 2019, the Chinese zodiac’s ‘year of the pig.’ The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast in April a decline of 134 million head — equivalent to the entire annual output of American pigs — and the worst slump since the department began counting China’s pigs in the mid 1970s. …
“The epidemic could have political repercussions as well. Xi Jinping may want to finalize trade negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump to both ease the importation of much-needed pork, poultry and beef supplies, and to enable Chinese lawmakers to focus solely on quelling outbreaks, said INTL FCStone’s Suderman.”
CNN: “Former CIA officer pleads guilty to conspiring to commit espionage for China”
A message from the American Beverage Association:
America’s beverage companies are working together to bring you more ways to help reduce calories from sugar.
THE INVESTIGATIONS — “Someone Did Get to Look at Trump’s Tax Returns: Deutsche Bankers,” by Bloomberg’s Greg Farrell: “Donald Trump doesn’t want anyone to see his tax returns. Not the public. Not Congress. But at least one group has peered into the carefully guarded trove and could provide some insight — a team from Deutsche Bank AG. The bankers got a look before agreeing to lend to the Trump Organization in 2012 — access that was described by two people familiar with the interaction. …
“After a recent subpoena, Deutsche Bank was prepared to begin on May 6 turning over details to Congress about that relationship and its loans to Trump family businesses. Now, Trump and his family have sued to stop the flow of information.” Bloomberg
WHITE HOUSE VISITORS’ LOUNGE — “Wynonna Judd working with White House on criminal justice reform,” by Gabby Orr and Anita Kumar
MIKHAIL KHODORKOVSKY,
the former Russian billionaire who was locked up for 10 years by
Vladimir Putin, spoke Thursday night at a small gathering organized by
American Interest publisher Charles Davidson at his house. About Putin’s
loyalists: “Those people that Putin regards as his inner circle, we
sometimes call it the court, as in the king’s court. … This court
consists of two parts. One is the innermost circle, these are the
principal beneficiaries of the current regime. There are several hundred
such people. The next ring out is several thousand people, maybe as
much as 10,000 people.”
On whether Russia has anything on Trump: “As to concerns, is there kompromat, compromising material in Russia on Trump, I don’t believe in kompromat. … If there were some serious financial kompromat, I think the FBI would be all over it by now, but if we’re talking about personal relations kompromat, women, whatever, I think that we could see that that doesn’t qualify as kompromat for Trump.” Pic of Khodorkovsky
BEYOND THE BELTWAY — “California governor makes big change to giant water project,” by AP’s Kathleen Ronayne in Sacramento: “California Gov. Gavin Newsom scrapped a $16 billion plan Thursday to build two giant water tunnels to reroute the state’s water system and instead directed state agencies to restart planning for a single tunnel. The move came after $240 million has already been spent on the project championed by former Gov. Jerry Brown to divert water from the north to the state’s drier south.” AP
PLAYBOOK GREATER METRO SECTION — “Baltimore Mayor Pugh resigns after month on leave amid investigation into her business deals,” by The Baltimore Sun’s Ian Duncan, Jean Marbella and Luke Broadwater: “Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh resigned Thursday, apologizing for the harm she has caused to the city’s image amid a growing scandal over her sales of a self-published children’s book series. It was the latest blow to the leadership of a city that’s seen two mayors resign in scandal in less than a decade and a third one decline to seek another term after a riot over police misconduct and a soaring murder rate.” Baltimore Sun
BIG IN THE VALLEY — “Facebook Building Cryptocurrency-Based Payments System,” by WSJ’s AnnaMaria Andriotis, Liz Hoffman, Peter Rudegeair and Jeff Horwitz:“Facebook Inc. is recruiting dozens of financial firms and online merchants to help launch a cryptocurrency-based payments system on the back of its gigantic social network.
“The effort … threatens to upend the traditional, lucrative plumbing of e-commerce and would likely be the most mainstream application yet of cryptocurrency. It comes as the social-media giant is under intense pressure from regulators, users and shareholders to address privacy shortcomings.” WSJ
— BIG IN D.C.: “Facebook bans extremist figures for being ‘dangerous,’” by WaPo’s Elizabeth Dwoskin and Craig Timberg: “The bans — including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and Infowars host Alex Jones — are a sign that the social network is more aggressively enforcing its hate speech policies under pressure from civil rights groups.” WaPo
MEDIAWATCH — MAJOR CHANGES AT CBS NEWS — N.Y. Post’s Alexandra Steigrad: “Norah O’Donnell is officially out as co-host of CBS’s struggling morning show — thanks to Gayle King. The new anchor lineup for ‘CBS This Morning’ has been set and it doesn’t include O’Donnell because King — riding high off her big interview with R. Kelly — has demanded she be sent elsewhere, The Post has learned. …
“O’Donnell is still a coveted name at CBS, however, and has been offered a ‘monster anchor’ job that includes a chief political anchor role at the network in addition to [Jeff] Glor’s job as anchor of ‘CBS Evening News,’ The Post has learned. She will also continue to appear on ‘60 Minutes,’ a source said. Glor, who has struggled to improve on the show’s third-place ranking, will likely be offered a correspondent or weekend anchor role, the source said.
“Besides King, the new morning show lineup includes ‘CBS This Morning Saturday’ co-anchor Anthony Mason and CBS News correspondents Tony Dokoupil, a source said. … Zirinsky denied that King had anything to do with O’Donnell leaving the morning show, which has fallen in the ratings since Charlie Rose was ousted over sexual harassment claims in 2017.” NYP
— Curt Mills will be Washington editor of Spectator USA and is going to help its U.S. expansion and move to print in October. He most recently has worked at the National Interest. Spectator USA has also named Dominic Green as life and arts editor to oversee everything non-D.C.
— Stephen Moore will not be returning as a CNN contributor, per The Hollywood Reporter’s Jeremy Barr.
— COMING ATTRACTIONS: Fox News will air a town hall with Kirsten Gillibrand on June 2.

A message from the American Beverage Association:
America’s beverage companies—Coke, Dr Pepper and Pepsi—are working hard to support families as they reduce the sugar in their diets. That means offering more great tasting options with less sugar or no sugar at all, putting clear calorie labels on every product and working with public health organizations and other national and local partners to build stronger, healthier communities. With more choices, smaller portions and less sugar, America’s families can find the balance that’s right for them.

Facebook Bans Several Pages for Hate Speech On Thursday, social media giant Facebook announced a number of accounts that would be permanently banned from their platform for violating their rules regarding hate speech. The timing and motivation for banning so many high-profile accounts in one swoop was not immediately explained. From CNN: “Facebook announced Thursday afternoon that it had designated some high-profile people, including Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who’s notorious for using anti-Semitic language, and right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, as ‘dangerous’ and said it will be purging them from its platforms. Jones and his media outlet InfoWars had previously been banned from Facebook (FB) in August 2018, but had maintained a presence on Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. On Thursday, Jones and InfoWars will be barred from Instagram as well. Other people banned on Thursday included Paul Nehlen, an anti-Semite who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016 and 2018, and fringe right-wing media personalities Laura Loomer, Milo Yiannopoulos and Paul Joseph Watson. ‘We’ve always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology,’ a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement provided to CNN Business. ‘The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today.’ A Facebook spokesperson told CNN Business the company goes through a lengthy process and takes into consideration a number of factors before determining an individual to be ‘dangerous.’” Facebook has not yet been clear about what specific posts or affiliations led to the swoop of high-profile banishments. Dozens of Conservative Sites ‘Blacklisted’ by Liberal Journalism Institute While Facebook was cracking down on their speech “code”, an employee of the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center created a website for The Poynter Institute for Media Studies indexing dozens of news websites he labeled as unreliable, fake, conspiracy, or biased. Most of the websites were right-leaning. The website initially called for advertisers to “blacklist” the listed sites, though after many of the included organizations launched complaints that request was removed. From the Washington Free Beacon: “The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, a Florida-based nonprofit journalism school, released the list on Wednesday and declared dozens of mainstream conservative sites such as the Washington Free Beacon, Daily Caller, Daily Signal, CNS News, and Breitbart as ‘unreliable’ while listing few liberal sites,” Newsbusters reports. The study notes it trimmed the list ‘by removing several sites whose stories, though highly politicized, were mostly not fake: alternet.org, cato.org, heritage.org, nationalreview.com, thedailybeast.com, the intercept.com, thinkprogress.org, and weeklystandard.com.’ A majority of the removed sites lean left. Of the removed conservative sites, the Heritage Foundation, a think tank – and not in itself a news site — was taken off the list. However, the Daily Signal, which is hosted by the Heritage Foundation, is included on the list. Another conservative site that was removed from the list, the Weekly Standard, was shuttered in December.” Baltimore Mayor Finally Resigns Her long-awaited resignation came via a letter read by her attorney. The Mayor herself hasn’t been seen since she took a leave of absence a month ago. From National Review: “Baltimore mayor Catherine Pugh resigned Thursday amid a mushrooming corruption scandal. Pugh’s resignation is effective immediately, her attorney Steve Silverman said at a press conference that she herself did not attend. ‘Dear citizens of Baltimore, I would like to thank you for allowing me to serve as the 50th mayor. It has been an honor and privilege,’ Pugh said in a statement read by Silverman. ‘I’m sorry for the harm that I have caused to the image of the city of Baltimore and the credibility of the office of the mayor. Baltimore deserves a mayor who can move our great city forward.’ Pugh, 69, came under fire for selling $500,000 in copies of her ‘Healthy Holly’ children’s books to the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) while serving on its board. She also sold 20,000 copies of the books to Kaiser Permanente for $114,000 from 2015 to 2018, and 10,000 copies to Associated Black Charities for nearly $80,000 from 2011 and 2016. She has since resigned her position as a UMMS board member, canceled that deal, and returned the last $100,000 payment from it to UMMS, according to the Baltimore Sun.” Friday Entertainment Center Why I Respect Alyssa Milano’s Liberal Activism (From Erika Anderson on Medium) Peter Mayhew Dies: “Star Wars” Chewbacca Actor was 74 (Deadline) Arya Stark was the Wrong Choice for Winterfell Hero (From John Martin for The Federalist) (I happen to disagree but John wrote a great argument for his side) “Game of Thrones” Season 8 Episode 4: New Photos Show A Smug Cersei And Aftermath of War (Deadline) Petition Demands Captain Marvel Be Played by Gay Woman of Color – Not Brie Larson (Bounding into Comics) Opening This Weekend: “Long Shot” with Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. Good morning,Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters nationwide believe ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft are good for the U.S. economy. Just 7% believe they are bad for the economy, 17% believe they have no impact, and 20% are not sure.Seventy-percent
(70%) of Hispanic voters see the ride-sharing services as good for the
economy. So do 66% of black voters and 51% of white voters. There is also a generational divide. Among voters under 50, 64% believe these services are good for the economy. That falls to
47% among older voters.Forty-two
percent (42%) of U.S. adults believe workers in restaurants and bars
generally earn more money with a lower hourly rate and tips than with a
$15 hourly wage. A Job Creators Network/ ScottRasmussen.com survey found that 29% disagree and 30% are not sure. However,
among those who have actually worked in a job where they are paid
mostly in tips, 55% believe the workers earn more money with tips than
with the higher minimum wage. Thirty-two percent (32%) take the opposite
view and 13% are not sure.House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is now viewed favorably by 39% of voters.
That’s up three points from a month ago but down three from two months
ago. The bouncing around has occurred primarily among Democrats. In
March, the highest ranking Democratic official was viewed favorably by
76% of those in her own party. That fell to 60% in April and is now at
68%.In contrast, the Job Approval ratings for President Trump have been remarkably steady. Every daily update since January 28
has shown the president’s rating within two percentage points of 46%.Just 28% now believe it is even somewhat likely that Congress will successfully address the major issues facing the nation
before the 2020 elections. That total includes 32% of Democrats and 31%
of Republicans. However, just 21% of Independent voters consider it
even somewhat likely.Overall, 25% of voters believe their own representative in Congress is the
best person for the job. Once again, Independent voters offer a
harsher assessment. While 30% of both Republicans and Democrats think
they are represented by the best person for the job, just 14% of
Independent voters agree. As for the Democratic presidential hopefuls, Senator Kamala Harris has surged in terms of Social Media Support.
She’s now number two behind former Vice President Joe Biden. And,
Biden’s bounce has faded quickly. Harris gained ground following her
questioning of Attorney General William Barr during a televised hearing. Finally, today’s Number of the Day highlights
a shameful moment in American history. It was 56 years ago today that
Police Commissioner Bull Connor unleashed fire hoses and attack dogs on
African-American schoolchildren.The
horrific actions were televised and viewed widely around the country,
becoming a key turning point in the Civil Rights movement. A few weeks
after that event, Martin Luther King’s Letter from a Birmingham Jail was first published.Thank you for your interest in our work, Scott

05/03/2019 Share: Carl Cannon’s Morning Note Contempt Dispute; Biden at Risk; Quote of the Week By Carl M. Cannon on May 03, 2019 08:51 am Good morning, it’s Friday, May 3, 2019, and the day I spotlight an end-of-the week quote intended to provide inspiration for the weekend. Today’s comes from Joe DiMaggio, who broke into the majors on this date in 1936. A crowd of 25,000 New Yorkers attended the chilly afternoon game at Yankee Stadium for the heralded debut of the quiet, dark-haired 21-year-old phenom from California. As a minor league star for the San Francisco Seals, DiMaggio has torn up the Pacific Coast League, and the Yanks’ brass knew what they had. Manager Joe McCarthy put the kid in centerfield, and slotted him third in the batting order — Babe Ruth’s old spot — in front of Lou Gehrig. DiMaggio did not disappoint, scoring two runs and collecting three hits, one of them a screaming triple, as the Yankees won 14-5. They’d win the next day, too, and both games after that as the team embarked on a winning streak that, in some ways, didn’t end until DiMaggio retired in 1951. In his 13 seasons (he spent three years in military service during World War II), New York would win 10 pennants and nine World Series championships. From the start, however, DiMaggio’s mystique was about more than baseball, even at a time when baseball was the unquestioned national pastime. I’ll have more on this theme, along with today’s quotation, in a moment. First, I’d point you to RealClearPolitics’ front page, which presents our poll averages, videos, breaking news stories, and aggregated opinion columns spanning the political spectrum. We also offer original material from our own reporters and contributors, including the following: * * * Lawmakers Dispute Precedent for Holding Barr in Contempt. Susan Crabtree has the story. In RealClearMarkets, Allan Golombek warns that American workers and companies will suffer most if Trump cuts India out of a low-tariff scheme to punish it for narrow access to markets there. Ending Steel Tariffs Would Reduce the Cost of Energy. Merrill Matthews explains in RealClearEnergy. The Army’s Multi-Domain Operations in 2028. Daniel Goure spotlights the planning document in RealClearDefense. * * * The sixth of seven children born to Sicilian immigrants, Joe DiMaggio dropped out of Galileo High School because he could make more money showcasing his athletic gifts on a baseball diamond than working on his father’s fishing boat as it plied the waters of San Francisco Bay. He could always play, although at the beginning of his career Joe was so naïve that he could barely function in the public eye. “I can remember a reporter asking me for a quote, and I didn’t know what a quote was,” he later recalled. “I thought it was some kind of soft drink.” Yet by the time he was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame, he was toasted by presidents and kings — and had been married to the world’s most popular movie star. But it wasn’t the elites who made DiMaggio such an admired figure; it was everyday Americans, many of them immigrants themselves. “An astonishing portion of the crowd,” the New York Times noted after his debut in 1936, “was composed of strangers to the sport — mostly Italians — who did not even know the stadium subway station.” They would learn it soon enough; moreover, DiMaggio attracted similar crowds when the Yankees played on the road. “I would like to take the great DiMaggio fishing,” Ernest Hemingway’s protagonist says in “The Old Man and the Sea.” “They say his father was a fisherman. Maybe he was as poor as we are and would understand.” In person, DiMaggio could be difficult and demanding. Yet, his enormous sense of pride perfectly complemented the challenges of his unforgiving sport. In 1947, the Yankees cruised to another pennant, which they clinched on September 15. DiMaggio continued to play, however, even though he was banged up, and to play as hard and precisely as he always did. Famed sportswriter Jimmy Cannon once asked him: With the pennant locked up and the games essentially meaningless while the Yankees waited for the annual sacrificial lamb (i.e., the National League champs), why push yourself so hard? “I always think,” replied DiMaggio, “there might be someone out there in the stands who’s never seen me play.” And that, from a man who once confused a “quote” with a soft drink, is today’s quotation of the week. As we learned from Joseph, God’s plan for us includes ‘bad days’ Posted: 03 May 2019 04:03 AM PDT One of the most difficult challenges that can break people from their faith is hardship, particularly when it is prolonged. We go through life and circumstances arise that can make us waver, make us doubt, or make us wonder what we did wrong. Many people go through what seems like an endless cycle of circumstances […] The post As we learned from Joseph, God’s plan for us includes ‘bad days’ appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Defending Israel Posted: 03 May 2019 03:26 AM PDT FIRST, THE BACKGROUND In the fall semester of 1962, I became virtually the only white Gentile student at Palms Junior High School in West Los Angeles. About 98% of the student body were Jews. To digress just a bit, it used to be common usage to say Jewish. But in recent years, I have become […] The post Defending Israel appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Collusion: Ukraine says Hillary Clinton’s campaign sought dirt on Trump Posted: 02 May 2019 08:55 PM PDT After over two years of media speculation, $30 million in taxpayer money, and a wide-ranging investigation that found no collusion between a 2016 candidate and a foreign government, it turns out the Mueller team was simply looking in the wrong place. In fact, they were looking at the wrong campaign. The only pertinent person we haven’t heard from regarding the Mueller report is Robert Mueller himself. The art of the retraction: Why WaPo and others initially called Louis Farrakhan ‘far-right’ Posted: 02 May 2019 06:00 PM PDT Any time a headline includes Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and InfoWars top dog Alex Jones, it must mean one is attacking the other, right? They’re on opposite sides of the political and religious spectra, so they can’t be on the same side of any particular coin. Under attack from all fronts: Yes, Jews must circle the wagons Posted: 02 May 2019 12:55 PM PDT Historically, the Jewish people have experienced the highest highs and lowest lows over the millennia. We don’t have to go back to the times of Moses, David, or Jesus to see these extreme peaks and valleys in their situation as a people. We can go back seven decades to see an extreme low with the Holocaust […] The post Under attack from all fronts: Yes, Jews must circle the wagons appeared first on Conservative Christian News. |
Time Magazine gives Pete Buttigieg a lift. He may not need it. Posted: 02 May 2019 09:31 AM PDT Most of the Democratic candidate buzz this week has surrounded former Vice President Joe Biden’s rise following the official announcement of his candidacy. Some has fallen on Senator Bernie Sanders as the supposed biggest contender to keep Biden and the Democratic Establishment from controlling the nomination again. Doug Collins obliterates Jerry Nadler’s narrative on William Barr and the Mueller report Posted: 02 May 2019 08:54 AM PDT Representative Doug Collins (R-GA) had a few words for House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler today. David Gerstman:
“Sometimes when I’m preparing a post, I have a lot of material and I end
up leaving something out. While lots of Western “experts” disagree
with designating the
Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organization as the Trump administration
is seeking to do, there’s no doubt that many offshoots of the MB are,
in fact, terrorist organizations. This includes Hamas and Al Qaeda. In a
2003 profile of Sayyid Qutb, a member of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood who
was executed in 1966, Paul Berman described Qutb
as “the intellectual hero of every one of the groups that eventually
went into Al Qaeda, their Karl Marx (to put it that way), their guide.”
So yes, MB may make a big show of rejecting terror, but their
philosophy has been behind some of the biggest terror threats of out
time. You can’t punish people for their thoughts I suppose, but there’s
no excuse for treating MB as a benign organization.”

MEET THE PRESS
Dysfunction junction … and the 2020 Dem center holds (for now)Getting too much email? Unsubscribe | Manage subscriptionsMeet the Press: First Read <email@mail.nbcnews.com>Fri 5/3/2019 08:49
From NBC’s Chuck Todd, Mark Murray and Carrie Dann
FIRST READ: Another dysfunctional and combative week in the Trump Era
The week began with President Trump, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer
hailing progress on infrastructure. (Yay, Infrastructure Week finally delivering!)
And it ends after Pelosi, the speaker of the House,
accused the attorney general of the United States
of lying to Congress. (Oh no, there goes Infrastructure Week!)
That’s not to mention yet another potential Trump nominee — this time, possible Fed pick Stephen Moore — going from “full speed ahead” to out of contention
in a matter of hours.
This whiplash – including Trump’s
“it’s time to get back to business” tweet from this morning – underscores the governmental dysfunction of the Trump Era.
And all of the political combat that goes with it.
It’s difficult for a
president to negotiate in good faith when his administration doesn’t
view Congress as a co-equal branch of government.
It’s also difficult for
Democratic leaders to sell bipartisan deals to their rank-and-file after
what’s transpired over the last two years.
The bare minimum on Capitol Hill gets done – and even that becomes quite a lift. (Remember the longest government shutdown in American history?)
And, yes, Trump fills more court vacancies and takes more executive actions.
But everything else? It’s as dysfunctional as it gets.

NYT: FBI sent investigator to meet with Trump aide in 2016
The
lead of this New York Times story is definitely eye-catching:
“The
conversation at a London bar in September 2016 took a strange turn when
the woman sitting across from George Papadopoulos, a
Trump campaign adviser, asked a direct question: Was the Trump campaign
working with Russia?”
“The
woman had set up the meeting to discuss foreign policy issues. But she
was actually a government investigator posing as a research
assistant, according to people familiar with the operation.”
But
it’s this part at the end
that will likely spur the next tweetstorm from President Trump:
The FBI had an informant attending Trump White House meetings.
“[Evan
Halper] was invited as
part of a group of China experts to meet with White House advisers in
2017. Mr. Halper informed the F.B.I. of the invitation but was not
provided with any guidance, people familiar with the episode said.”
“The
group met briefly with Peter Navarro, the president’s top trade
representative, who had interviewed Mr. Halper years earlier
at Mr. Halper’s home in Virginia for a documentary. According to Axios,
the administration also considered Mr. Halper for an ambassadorship.”
2020 VISION: The center has been holding – so far
For all of the talk of socialism inside the Democratic Party and attention on figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the center has been holding its ground
in the early 2020 Dem presidential race.
Joe Biden is leading in the polls.
Quite
a few Dem candidates – like Biden, Amy Klobuchar and new entrant
Michael Bennet – are promising a public option on health care instead of
single-payer.
And Pete Buttigieg says free college tuition isn’t progressive, because that benefits the most fortunate in society.
Now this doesn’t mean that Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren won’t win the Dem nomination – they very well could.
And it also doesn’t mean the Democratic Party as a whole is much more liberal and progressive than it was in 2016 – it very well is.
But if your litmus tests are Medicare for All, free college, pragmatism versus progressivism, then
the field is much more ideologically diverse than you might have thought two months ago.

On the campaign trail today: Elizabeth
Warren stumps in Ames, Iowa… John Hickenlooper is in New Hampshire…
Both Beto O’Rourke and Pete Buttigieg are in Texas… And Kamala Harris
raises money in California.
On the campaign trail Saturday:
Warren, Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke and Amy Klobuchar campaign in the
Hawkeye State… O’Rourke also delivers
a commencement address in Dallas… Hickenlooper remains in New
Hampshire… Joe Biden hits South Carolina… And Buttigieg raises money in
the Lone Star State.
On the campaign trail Sunday: Warren, Sanders and O’Rourke remain in Iowa… Biden stays in South Carolina… And Harris speaks at an NAACP dinner
in Detroit, Mich.
DATA DOWNLOAD: And the number of the day is … 62
62.
That’s the number of administration nominees Trump has withdrawn since taking office, according to data
provided to POLITICO by the Partnership for Public Service.
And that’s only the official count of those who were formally nominated in the first place, so
it doesn’t include those who took themselves out of contention earlier in the nomination process.
The 62 tally more than doubles the amount of nominees (30) President Barack Obama had withdrawn at this point in his presidency.
Tweet of the day: May the force be with you, Peter Mayhew
THE LID: Center of attention
Don’t miss
the pod from yesterday, when we noted how the center of the 2020 Dem field is stronger than many might have suspected a few months ago.
