Pete Buttigieg is Winning the Only Race That Matters Right Now
The
media erection (my apologies if you are offended, but you know it is an
accurate description) for Pete Buttigieg has gone well past four hours
and most of the Circle of Jerks that make up the DC press corps should
really be in the hospital right now seeking treatment from a doctor.
To
be clear, I’m not talking about the interviews on Sunday shows and
roundtable discussions. In fact, you really should check out Chuck
Todd’s interview from yesterday. I’ll have more to say on that later
today. The man is the mayor of a big city and is running for President.
The Sunday shows, etc. are expected.

The responses ranged anywhere from enraged fury to complete loss of bodily function. While some of those irate responses were nothing if not entertaining, there was an ironic undercurrent behind the majority of them: that Erickson was butchering logic to draw his conclusion. Mark Joseph Stern, a writer for leftwing Slate, responded to Erick by Read More… Joe Biden And Bill Clinton Are Proof Mainstream Media Is The Democrats’ PR Arm Video of Joe Biden’s clearly inappropriate, hands-on interactions with women and girls have been all over the internet for years, with conservative journalists being just about the only ones willing to point it out. The response from the mainstream press was either to ignore it or, in CNN’s case, report that the women weren’t actually uncomfortable and that he’s just making them laugh. I was only able to find three articles written prior to 2018 in mainstream publications detailing Biden’s history of inappropriate contact with women and girls – one each from NY Magazine, Time, and NPR. The media is only beginning to seriously report on Biden’s overt fondling of women and girls now that he’s considering running against Democrats who are slightly further left than he is. Biden’s usefulness in advancing the left’s agenda Read More… The Age of Heroes There’s always been a glimpse of the glory of Rome in American politics. We like our heroes, and we like our Presidents to match the outsized responsibilities given them by the Constitution–we like them larger than life. Unlike European nations, our Presidents are lionized through storms like Horatius Cocles holding the bridge at the Tiber. This is why when a President is damaged like Nixon was, America is damaged. Since 1974, the nation has spent its time regaining, losing, and regaining, that idealized Presidency, to the point that now the Plebians (the electorate and parties) have become a mob seeking its hero. Politicians are no longer representatives of the varied and conflicting wants of states in a pluralistic Read More… Buttigieg Cracks on “All Lives Matter” What is it about Democrats having to kiss the ring of the “Reverend” Al Sharpton? In recent remarks before Sharpton’s National Action Network—an activist group primarily geared toward keeping Al’s name in the headlines and the donations rolling in—Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who has seen his profile rising as of late amongst the horde of Democrats vying for the 2020 presidential nomination, told the audience what he thought they wanted to hear, appropriating the language of the Black Lives Matter movement in advocating for criminal justice reform. Monday, April 8, 2019 Brexit Countdown “Britain’s opposition Labour Party said on Friday that talks with the government on a last-ditch Brexit deal had made no progress, as EU leaders said Prime Minister Theresa May had not convinced them that they should let Britain delay its departure next week. May wrote to Brussels asking European Union leaders to postpone Britain’s exit from next Friday until June 30.” Reuters From the Left The left is critical of Theresa May’s leadership and maintains that Brexit was a bad idea to begin with. “The U.K. is a harried student begging a teacher (the EU) for one more day after pulling an all-nighter to finish an essay—and failing. And the teacher, after taking a look at the state of the paper, replies: ‘How about you take a week. Trust me, you’ll need it.’” Elliot Hannon, Slate “In the American system, the White House and the legislature are often controlled by different parties—Donald Trump has to sit down with ‘Chuck and Nancy’ on a regular basis if he wants to pass anything through Congress. In the U.K., the party controlling Parliament also controls the executive, and can usually rely on its own votes, sometimes with a coalition partner, to pass legislation… “So the prime minister sitting in a room haggling with the leader of the opposition to pass her bill—as Theresa May did with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn [last] week—is not how things are supposed to work. It’s even weirder when the governing party’s official position for the past four years has been that the leader of the opposition is an anti-Semitic Stalinist who poses a grave threat to national security. But with the prime minister’s party terminally split over Brexit, that’s where we are.” Joshua Keating, Slate Many argue that “Brexit is a right-wing culture war conducted in populist terms. It is not really about the E.U. It is about people’s sense of who they are. It is about wanting a world of walls, separating people and ideas and political structures from one another. But it is not just a desired outcome: By now, it is also a way of doing things. The Brexit mind-set does not compromise or accept caveats. It is politics in primary colors. There is victory or national slavery, and nothing in between… “But what’s terrifying about the closing days before the latest deadline for Britain to crash out of the E.U. with no deal, this coming Friday, is that such puritanism is no longer restricted to the government benches. It is now present among the opponents of Brexit, too. Labour MPs who support the People’s Vote campaign for a second referendum refused to back proposals for a softer Brexit on Monday, as did the moderate Liberal Democrats party. Even the Independent Group, a newly formed collection of former Conservative and Labour MPs who say they’re willing to work across traditional tribal loyalties, refused to support them… Unless MPs quickly rediscover Britain’s tradition of pragmatism, things are about to get very ugly indeed.” Ian Dunt, Washington Post “The economic concerns regarding immigration [cited by Brexiteers] were unfounded and incorrect. A report from the London School of Economics found that EU immigrants to Britain were more highly educated, younger, more likely to be working, and less likely to claim welfare benefits than the UK-born. Forty-four percent of these EU immigrants had achieved some level of higher education, compared to only 23% of native-born Brits. The parts of Britain that received increased EU immigration did not suffer greater decreases in jobs and wages of UK-born people. Finally, EU immigrants paid more in taxes than they consumed in benefits and in their use of public services.” Sam Natapoff, Salon But “even in the event that Brexit is cancelled, the EU cannot pretend that the last three years didn’t happen… The European Social Survey, a non-partisan research project that tracks the views of Europeans, asked citizens from other member states how they would vote in a similar referendum to the one held in the UK in 2016. The numbers should still alarm europhiles… while the UK is an outlier, ‘with around a fifth of those in a number of other member states willing to support an EU-exit of their own it would be wise for those supportive of the EU project to listen carefully to their concerns’… If they are not addressed soon, European politics could find itself in an even bigger mess.” Luke McGee, CNN From the Right The right is critical of the way Brexit has been handled, but still supportive of leaving the EU. “Several national parliaments in Europe are now dominated by ‘grand coalitions’ formed not to handle a national emergency but as a semi-permanent tactic to resist election results that have returned new outsider parties with Euro-sceptic tendencies… It’s easy to see this kind of politics emerging in Britain through May’s evisceration of Brexit. The mystery is why. The answer can’t be that this new political structure has produced either political or economic success… “The EU has had a relatively low rate of growth for about 30 years compared to the U.S., Asia, and the non-EU countries in Europe. Its greatest achievements are not establishing peace in Europe — that was done by the U.S. and NATO — but establishing the euro without the fiscal institutions to make it workable, to introduce the abolition of internal EU borders without firming up the external borders to make |
[visa-less travel]
workable, and to spend 40 percent of the EU budget on
an agricultural policy that intentionally keeps food prices high.”
John O’Sullivan, National Review
At the same time, “the ‘hard Brexit’ cadre of the Conservative Party has massively overplayed its hand. Refusing
to support Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit withdrawal deal with the
European Union, they have enabled a ‘soft Brexit’ alternative… it’s
clear that the soft Brexiteers are the winners here. After all, the
Labour Party is largely supportive of a Brexit along terms of a
continued formal customs union with the EU. This, unsurprisingly, has
the hard-liners very upset. They feel betrayed and are saying as much.
But they’re delusional. It was always clear that ignoring May’s halfway
soft-hard Brexit deal was risky. It opened the political space to those
who either oppose Brexit entirely or oppose anything but a softer
Brexit.”
Tom Rogan, Washington Examiner
“Either of the ‘extreme’ ends of political opinion on Brexit make sense:
repealing Article 50 and staying in the EU on existing terms or leaving
without a deal, exiting the single market and customs union in the
process… What doesn’t make sense, on the other hand, is any option which
falls between these two extremes. The 57 varieties of soft Brexit on
offer all come with the same problem: they would leave [Brits], to a
greater or lesser extent, subservient to EU law without any say in how those laws are made.”
Ross Clark, Spectator UK
“Brexit seemed to provide the opportunity of a lifetime for policy
entrepreneurs. Nearly one-sixth of the laws on the United Kingdom’s
statute book come from Brussels. And so, theoretically at least, Brexit
provided an opportunity to examine the regulatory books and decide which
of these 12,000-plus regulations proved useful and would be copied back
into the law by Parliament, and which could be altered and adjusted…
“[But] the Brexit opportunity is being wasted because the class of
politicians, civil servants, and diplomatic personnel who would need to
prize this opportunity, to let it fill them with renewed purpose and
vigor for serving the public in a time of extraordinary change, simply
aren’t interested in the project at all and not-so-secretly hope it goes
away. Brexit had won the referendum, but there was no Brexit party to implement it.”
Michael Brendan Dougherty, National Review
The EU “has taken a hard line on Brexit: You’re either in or any access
we grant you to the European ‘single market’ comes with no say in
decisions that affect your lives in important ways. Now, take it or
leave. I wonder when the point comes at which the British say, yes, a
no-deal Brexit is a leap of faith, there are uncertainties and there
will be costs. But to hell with it. We are a proud, independent-minded
people that has been through much worse together. True self-government is worth a little less GDP. Let’s stop fiddling and get on with it.”

POLITICO Playbook: Kirstjen Nielsen OUT — where she went out, how it went down and what’s next
By JAKE SHERMAN, ANNA PALMER and DANIEL LIPPMAN
04/08/2019 05:59 AM EDT
Presented by
DRIVING THE DAY
SPOTTED: KIRSTJEN NIELSEN at the waterside Hummingbird Bar and Kitchen in Old Town Alexandria on Sunday night around 8 p.m., just after stories were published saying she would resign from the Trump administration. She was with an entourage, seated at an outdoor table.
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP announced Sunday night that Nielsen would be leaving her position as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. Kevin McAleenan, who serves as commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is taking over as acting secretary. Nielsen’s departure comes after weeks of the president being frustrated with her handling of the surge of asylum-seekers arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border. Ted Hesson and Eliana Johnson on Nielsen’s DHS departure… Her resignation letter
— NYT: “Ms. Nielsen had requested the meeting to plan ‘a way forward’ at the border, in part thinking she could have a reasoned conversation with Mr. Trump about the role, according to three people familiar with the meeting. She came prepared with a list of things that needed to change to improve the relationship with the president.
“Mr. Trump in recent weeks had asked Ms. Nielsen to close the ports of entry along the border and to stop accepting asylum seekers, which Ms. Nielsen found ineffective and inappropriate. While the 30-minute meeting was cordial, Mr. Trump was determined to ask for her resignation. After the meeting, she submitted it.” NYT
WHERE TRUMP’S HEAD IS AT — @realDonaldTrump at 8:45 p.m.: “More apprehensions (captures) at the Southern Border than in many years. Border Patrol amazing! Country is FULL! System has been broken for many years. Democrats in Congress must agree to fix loopholes — No Open Borders (Crimes & Drugs). Will Close Southern Border If necessary…”
… at 9:03 p.m.: “….Mexico must apprehend all illegals and not let them make the long march up to the United States, or we will have no other choice than to Close the Border and/or institute Tariffs. Our Country is FULL!”
MILLER RISING — ANITA KUMAR, GABBY ORR and DANIEL LIPPMAN: “Stephen Miller pressuring Trump officials amid immigration shakeups”: “As President Donald Trump roils the capital over illegal immigration, his influential aide Stephen Miller is playing a more aggressive behind-the-scenes role in a wider administration shakeup.
“Frustrated by the lack of headway on a signature Trump campaign issue, the senior White House adviser has been arguing for personnel changes to bring in more like-minded hardliners, according to three people familiar with the situation — including the ouster of a key immigration official at the Department of Homeland Security, whose secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, announced on Sunday that she is resigning.
“Miller has also recently been telephoning mid-level officials at several federal departments and agencies to angrily demand that they do more to stem the flow of immigrants into the country, according to two people familiar with the calls.” POLITICO
— TRUMP WANTS TO GET TOUGH ON IMMIGRATION. We get that. But part of that is finding someone in his administration who could work with a DEMOCRATIC HOUSE! The president lost the House in November, and he doesn’t seem to have fully reckoned with that.
PUTTING IT INTO CONTEXT — “Top departures from Trump’s White House”
TRUMP has an acting chief of staff, an acting Defense secretary, an acting Interior secretary who is awaiting confirmation and now an acting DHS secretary.
NEXT UP — NYT’S JACEY FORTIN: “Mr. McAleenan has a law degree from the University of Chicago and practiced law in California before he worked for the government. He held a variety of positions at the border protection agency before becoming its deputy commissioner in 2014 under the Obama administration. He won the country’s highest civil service honor, the Presidential Rank Award, in 2015.
“Mr. McAleenan became the acting commissioner of the agency in January 2017 and was formally sworn in as commissioner in March 2018. He focused on counterterrorism, border security and trade enforcement, oversaw about 60,000 employees and managed a budget of over $13 billion, according to the agency.” NYT
— ANOTHER NOTABLE DETAIL via the NYT:“At a Senate hearing last month, he suggested ways to address that crisis: The United States government should support governments in Central America to improve economic opportunities there, he said, and work with the Mexican authorities to clamp down on transnational criminal organizations that prey on migrants.”
— POSSIBLE NIELSEN REPLACEMENTS? From our POLITICO colleagues: Energy Secretary Rick Perry, former Virginia A.G. Ken Cuccinelli and Emilio Gonzalez, city manager of Miami and former director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services under President George W. Bush.
— THE COAST GUARD PLANE that typically ferries the DHS secretary has taken off from DCA and is heading south. We’ll keep you updated on where this plane lands.
ELSEWHERE IN CABINET WATCHING … EDUCATION SECRETARY BETSY DEVOS’ family jet is scheduled into DCA from Vero Beach at 11:13 this morning.
Good Monday morning. BUZZ: Looking for freshmen at the House Democrats’ retreat this week? You might be disappointed. We hear that some first-year lawmakers are taking a pass on the retreat, which will be held near Leesburg, Va. They spent lots of time in D.C. during the shutdown, and want to get home.
— NEW … MORE RETREAT SPEAKERS … OUR COLLEAGUE HEATHER CAYGLE reported that John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are speaking to the Dems at their retreat this week. We have a few more names: former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick; Bernard Tyson, CEO of Kaiser Permanente; former acting CMS Administrator Andy Slavitt; IBEW’s Lonnie Stephenson (recently hugged by Joe Biden on stage); Bakari Sellers; Columbia, S.C., Mayor Stephen Benjamin; St. Petersburg, Fla., Mayor Rick Kriseman; Richard Haass; and Michèle Flournoy.
A message from AARP:
Americans pay the highest drug prices in the world while drug companies game the system to make billions. No wonder voters of all stripes support bipartisan action to create competition and lower prescription drug prices. President Trump, Speaker Pelosi and Senator Grassley, thank you for working together to protect us.
NANCY PELOSI to USA TODAY’S ELIZA COLLINS, who traveled with the speaker in Missouri: “In a nod to each wing of the party, she says Democrats should fight for the ‘boldest common denominator.’
“‘While there are people who have a large number of Twitter followers, what’s important is that we have large numbers of votes on the floor of the House,’ Pelosi said. Ocasio-Cortez has close to 4 million followers on Twitter.
“When USA TODAY asked how progressive members responded when she told them they needed legislation that could pass, she responded, ‘They’re fine.’ ‘As I say to my own district “you go out and elect 218 people, just like San Francisco, then we can talk,”’ she said.” USA Today
— PELOSI is on a bit of a press tear over the last few days. She recently did the Playbook Interview with us, and she also sat down with WaPo’s Paul Kane.

THE LATEST ON DISASTER FUNDING … SARAH FERRIS and JOHN BRESNAHAN: “With a disaster relief bill deadlocked in the Senate, House Democrats are prepared to move ahead with their own package that includes billions of dollars in aid for the rain-swollen Midwest. The Democrats’ revised bill would add $2.5 billion for heartland states reeling from catastrophic floods, an overture to Republicans after months of partisan bickering.
“But the new version is unlikely to advance in the Senate because it includes the same contentious pot of money for Puerto Rico, which has been among the GOP’s chief criticisms against the bill.” POLITICO
ADAM CANCRYN and ALICE MIRANDA OLLSTEIN: “Trump’s health care brain trust says no thanks”: “President Donald Trump promised a new plan to replace Obamacare. But the four Senate Republicans he tapped for the job aren’t jumping at the opportunity.
“Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) says any new plan has to come from the White House — and that he had no warning Trump planned to make him part of the health policy group. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) won’t say more than he and colleagues are ‘working on health care thoughts.’ John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), when asked about the Republican plan, turned the question back on the opposition, saying, ‘Democrats want to go to the complete government takeover of health care.’ And Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), the fourth member of Trump’s team, hasn’t committed to anything more than conversations with colleagues’ about health care affordability.” POLITICO
2020 WATCH … AP’S JUANA SUMMERS and JULIE PACE: “Sanders finds himself in a new role: front-runner”: “Less than two months into his second White House bid, no other declared candidate in the crowded Democratic field currently has amassed so many advantages: a $28 million war chest, a loyal and enthusiastic voter base and a set of clearly defined policy objectives.
“That puts Sanders on markedly different footing than during his first White House run, creating new challenges for a candidate whose supporters relish his role as an underdog and an outsider. He now carries the weight of high expectations and will face heightened scrutiny over everything from the cost and feasibility of his government-funded policy proposals to his tax returns, which he has not yet released.
“He initially blamed ‘mechanical issues’ for the delay, and his campaign now says he wants to wait until after the April 15 tax filing deadline to fulfill his promise to release a decade worth of returns.” AP
301 DAYS UNTIL IOWA … WAPO’S CLEVE WOOTSON JR. and HOLLY BAILEY in Malcom, Iowa: “In Iowa, Bernie Sanders and Beto O’Rourke change up their styles to win over skeptical voters”: “For Sanders (I-Vt.), who has been criticized for having little interaction with voters, that meant answering dozens of questions from people in Malcom about whatever they wanted to discuss: student aid for undocumented immigrants, a universal basic income or criminal justice legislation.
“At one point during his town hall, an aide warned Sanders they were running short on time and ‘this will have to be the last question.’ ‘No,’ Sanders replied. ‘We have time to take one or two more.’ Then he took a question about his plan to raise the minimum wage.
“For O’Rourke, who has been accused of being heavy on rhetoric and skimpy on policy specifics, it meant talking to voters in all the detail and length he could muster. ‘Let me try again,’ he said at Grinnell College after being asked a second time for more specifics of his platforms to address climate change and police violence.” WaPo
— DAVID SIDERS in Des Moines: “Reality bites Beto after high-flying kickoff”: “[B]y the time he left the state on Sunday, it was also clear that the euphoria that greeted O’Rourke’s entry into the race three weeks earlier has started to subside. The inevitable slog of competing in a packed Democratic primary is underway, and O’Rourke has not yet drawn the wave of national adulation from the left that his Senate run against Ted Cruz last year received.
“‘He’s going to have to do the work,’ said Scott Brennan, an Iowa [DNC] member and a former state party chairman. ‘And it isn’t all breathless, 300-person crowds.’” POLITICO
— PROFILE: ELIZABETH WEIL in THE ATLANTIC: “Can Kamala Harris Win?”
A message from AARP:
Both sides agree that prescription prices are too high. Thank you, President Trump, Speaker Pelosi and Senator Grassley, for working together to lower drug prices.

More than 30 members, including House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), are signed up as members of the caucus.
TRUMP’S MONDAY — The president will participate in a credentialing ceremony for newly appointed ambassadors to Washington, D.C., at 11:45 a.m. in the Oval Office. CALIFORNIA VS. TRUMP — L.A. TIMES’ TARYN LUNA in San Salvador, El Salvador: “Newsom seeks to counter Trump as he makes world stage debut in El Salvador”: “‘I think right now you have a president that talks down to people in this country, talks past them, demoralizing folks living here and their relatives in the United States,’ [California Gov. Gavin] Newsom said of President Trump. ‘I think it’s important to let folks know that’s not our country, that’s an individual in our country, who happens at this moment to be president.’
“The governor chose the smallest country in Central America as the backdrop for his debut on the world’s stage to observe its socio-economic conditions, which send tens of thousands of Salvadorans fleeing for the U.S. each year. But the journey nearly 3,000 miles from the state he governs also affords Newsom a key political opportunity to counter Trump’s immigration narrative to an international audience, a move that could boost his national profile for future campaigns and help position him as a progressive leader of the resistance.” LAT

HAPPENING TOMORROW: the Israeli elections. Longtime P.M. Benjamin Netanyahu faces a vigorous challenge from a centrist coalition led by former Army chief Benny Gantz. Trump has gone all in for Netanyahu; will it be enough to get his ally re-elected?
— THE STAKES … NYT’S DAVID HALBFINGER inJerusalem: “As Israelis get ready to go to the polls on Tuesday, a stark, fateful and long-deferred choice has suddenly reappeared to confront them after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s unexpected promise to begin extending sovereignty over the West Bank if he is re-elected.
“Do voters want to make permanent their country’s control over the West Bankand its 2.6 million Palestinian inhabitants? Or do they want to keep alive the possibility that a Palestinian state could be carved out there one day?
“That question has been made newly urgent by Mr. Netanyahu… His shocking announcement about Israeli sovereignty in the West Bank appeared to be a last-ditch effort to rally his right-wing base and stay in power.” NYT

A message from AARP:
If there’s one issue that unites Republicans and Democrats alike, it’s that the price of prescription drugs is too high. Americans pay the highest drug prices in the world while drug companies game the system so they can rake in billions. Their greedy tactics are forcing millions of seniors and hardworking Americans to choose between buying food and buying medicine. Once and for all, we must stop price gouging by big drug companies. Voters overwhelmingly support bipartisan action that creates competition and lowers prescription drug prices. AARP supports the ongoing efforts of President Trump, Speaker Pelosi, and Senator Grassley to work together, along with other Republicans and Democrats, in finding permanent, commonsense solutions to lower the price of prescription drugs for all Americans.

OPINION — Washington, D.C., frequently gets wrapped up in debates over the tax code. DHS Secretary Out On Sunday evening, President Trump tweeted, “Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her service. I am pleased to announce that Kevin McAleenan, the current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner, will become Acting Secretary for @DHSgov. I have confidence that Kevin will do a great job!” From CBS News just before the announcement from Trump: “Nielsen’s imminent departure is a part of a massive DHS overhaul engineered and directed by top Trump adviser Stephen Miller, according to a senior U.S. official. It’s unclear whether Nielsen is deciding to leave voluntarily, or whether she has been pressured to resign. But Nielsen’s tenure since she was confirmed in December 2017 has at times been rocky, with the president taking some of his frustrations over illegal immigration out on her. Questions about whether she might leave have swirled for months. But she was by the president’s side on Friday in Calexico, California, as Mr. Trump pushed for a crackdown on illegal immigration and the need for a border wall. Nielsen’s announced exit comes two days after Mr. Trump announced he wants to go in a “tougher” direction in his nomination for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director, after originally announcing Ron Vitiello would head ICE.” As soon as rumors started of a resignation, rumors of a replacement also began. Many on the right have suggested former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. (Fun fact: Kobach’s first speech at a national event was CPAC 2011. It was also Trump’s first speech at a conservative event. Little ol’ me, then Director of CPAC, introduced Trump to the tune of “Money, Money, Money.”) In an interview on Sirius XM yesterday, Kobach said there are three steps to solve the border crisis. He said, “It’s not like we’re powerless and it’s not like we have to wait for Congress to do something. It’s sort of frustrating we see the Secretary of Homeland Security [Kirstjen Nielsen] saying ‘Well, we need Congress to help us before we solve this problem.’ No, we can actually solve the immediate crisis without Congress acting.” Speaking of the border crisis, Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders corrected someone who said he was for open borders. Yesterday he told an audience in Iowa, “If you open the borders, there’s a lot of poverty in this world, and you’re going to have people from all over the world. And I don’t think that’s something that we can do at this point. Can’t do it.” One lingering question: why does America’s most prominent socialist think poor people from all over the world would leave their countries to come to America? Arizona Makes a Giant Leap Toward Economic Opportunity for Licensed Professionals Arizona Governor Doug Ducey announced on Friday that the state will recognize occupational licenses from other states. This is a huge move for economic opportunity and against ridiculous licensing boards in Arizona. For example, just to blow dry someone’s hair, the board requires 1,000 hours of training. The Arizona State Board of Cosmetology got negative attention when it investigated cosmetology students who were giving free haircuts to the homeless. Ducey told Reason.com, “We’ve heard too many stories of licensed, experienced professionals denied the opportunity to work upon moving to Arizona. With this first-in-the-nation reform, Arizonans who have recently moved here will be able to put their skills to work faster and without all the red tape.” More from Reason’s Eric Boehm: “This is also a model for other states to follow. Most licenses aren’t transferable between states, and research in recent years has shown a link between growing levels of occupational licensing—more than a third of all jobs in the United States are now subject to some form of licensing, up from just one in 10 in 1970—and a decline in workers’ mobility. Nationwide, workers whose jobs require a state-issued license lose out on between $178 million and $711 million they could have earned by moving to a different state, according to a 2017 paper by Janna Johnson and Morris Kleiner, a pair of labor economists at the University of Minnesota. Johnson and Kleiner examined 22 professions that are licensed across most states, and they found that workers in those professions were, on average, 36 percent less likely to move across state lines than workers in non-licensed professions.” Odds and Ends This is always my favorite monthly column to write — here’s my April 2019 Lifestyle Favorites. The UK’s Sunday Times
reported over the weekend that Queen Elizabeth will extend a state
visit invitation to President Trump and the First Lady in June. It will
likely coincide with the 75th anniversary of D-Day on June 6. The
President had a working visit in June 2018, but has not been for an
official state visit. Then the First Lady also attended afternoon tea
with the Queen. Of course there’s lots to talk about when it comes to
foreign affairs, but Melania, Meghan, and Kate’s fashions during the
trip? There are sure to be a few headlines. |
Speaking of fashion, it is cherry blossom season here in Washington D.C. and the First Lady gives us inspiration with a gorgeous pink Valentino peacoat. From John Binder on Fashion Notes: “Mrs. Trump kept her attire casual as she arrived back at the White House this week, opting for a pair of skinny blue jeans, a black cashmere sweater, and a wool bubblegum pink peacoat by Valentino — the famed Italian fashion house. The Slovenian-born former model chose her favorite pair of black Saint Laurent sunglasses to block out the sun, and maybe even the White House photogs. On her feet, Mrs. Trump wore easygoing black Manolo Blahnik flats with a square buckle fixtured at the pointed toe.” Of course the Valentino coat is sold out. I found a similar blush-colored coat at Nordstrom for under $40. Mondays with Melania is a weekly feature that highlights what the First Lady is doing and wearing. Good morning,At
a convention led by Al Sharpton this weekend, most Democratic
presidential hopefuls pledged support for having the government pay
reparations to descendants of former slaves. The idea remains unpopular:
just 20% of voters nationwide support the idea. Most black voters (63%) support reparations, but only 10% of white voters agree.Eighty-two percent (82%) of voters have now heard of the Green New Deal. That’s up from 61% in January. However, as awareness of the controversial plan has increased, support has declined.
When described in general and positive terms that advocates of the plan
might use, 49% of voters are at least somewhat supportive. That’s down
from 55% in January. Opposition has increased from 20% at the beginning
of the year to 32% today. On
a partisan basis, Democrats remain strongly supportive. Most
Republicans are now opposed, a sharp reversal from earlier in the year.
Independent voters are now evenly divided. In the beginning of the year,
Independents supported the general idea of a Green New Deal by a 2-to-1
margin. But that support is only for a very
positive description of the plan. The core idea of letting the federal government transform the economy continues to provoke strong resistance.
Sixty percent (60%) of voters are uncomfortable with the idea of giving
the government such power. Only 27% are even somewhat okay with it.Part
of the resistance results from the belief that solutions will
eventually come from outside of the government. Fifty-six percent (56%)
believe innovation from private companies is most likely to develop
technologies to generate the energy we need without harming the
environment. Just 17% think federal government programs will accomplish
that goal.Looking ahead to Election 2020, President Trump leads both Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Senator Amy Klobuchar by seven points. Mayor Pete Buttigieg has been generating a lot of buzz on the campaign trail lately and it’s reflected in high levels of social media chatter. He currently trails the president in a general election match-up by nine.Other match-ups show that Trump leads John Delaney by 10, Marianne Williamson by
11, Andrew Yang by 12, Governor John Hickenlooper by 12, and Representative Tulsi Gabbard by 13.Thank you for your interest in our work,Scott
