Wednesday, May 15, 2019 Who Investigates the Investigators? “Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was ‘lawful and appropriate,’ according to a person familiar with the issue. Barr appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry.” AP News Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz is “close to concluding [his] inquiry into steps the FBI took in its probe of Trump campaign associates and Russia beginning in 2016.” Wall Street Journal From the Left The left believes that the appointment of Durham is politically motivated, and the investigation into the Trump campaign was justified. “The Trump officials making [contacts with Russians] included his son, his son-in-law, his campaign chairman, his personal lawyer, his future national security adviser, and his future attorney general, among others. We can argue about how you might define ‘collusion’ and whether what happened constituted a conspiracy. But from the standpoint of counterintelligence investigators looking for a fire, there was smoke billowing from every window in Trump Tower… “By all accounts, the investigators proceeded with unusual care, deeply concerned about what Russia was doing, but just as deeply concerned that their investigation might affect the outcome of the election if its existence became public. Which is why they successfully kept it secret until after the election was over, a fact that is utterly incompatible with the Republicans’ theory that there was a sinister conspiracy within the Justice Department that was bent on destroying Donald Trump.” Paul Waldman, Washington Post “Trump supporters point to the fact that the Steele Dossier — a largely unconfirmed report on early Russian efforts to influence Trump which had been funded in part by the Clinton campaign — was cited in a footnote in the formal FISA application. This argument ignores a few key details. The FISA application clearly disclosed that the Steele Dossier had received funding from those ‘likely looking for information to discredit’ the Trump campaign — and the surveillance on Page was renewed multiple times, including by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, a Trump appointee… Moreover, Russian spies had previously attempted to recruit Page outright… There’s no indication partisan concerns played any role in the surveillance.” Casey Michel, ThinkProgress “The most charitable interpretation of Barr’s behavior in defense of Trump is that he believes strongly in a ‘unitary executive,’ where the president can order any investigation he wants. But in his quest to protect the presidency, Barr is damaging our national security. His complicity in Trump’s efforts to disparage the FBI will make it more difficult for agents to do their jobs and could discourage investigations of those in power.” Barbara McQuade, Daily Beast “Robert Mueller’s report on Russian election interference detailed at least 140 contacts between Mr. Trump’s campaign and Russian nationals, WikiLeaks or their associates… Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, said on Tuesday that the F.B.I. confirmed with him that Russian hackers had managed in 2016 to infiltrate two county voter databases in the state… So once the Trump administration is done investigating the investigators, it should turn its attention to ensuring the sanctity and security of the nation’s ballot boxes.” Editorial Board, New York Times From the Right The right praises Durham, and hopes he uncovers any misconduct involving the investigation into the Trump campaign. “As a U.S. Attorney, Mr. Durham will have the power to convene a grand jury and subpoena people outside the government. Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz has been looking into some of the same questions, but he lacks similar power. Mr. Durham can also pick up any criminal referrals from Mr. Horowitz’s looming report… Appointing someone of [Dunham’s] standing and experience is important to getting to the truth about the FBI counterintelligence probe of Trump campaign officials, the FBI’s apparent misleading of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to get a warrant against Trump adviser Carter Page, and other seeming abuses.” Editorial Board, Wall Street Journal “Durham isn’t a prosecutor one sends on a fishing expedition. He’s the prosecutor one sends when there’s a likelihood of finding actionable items to prosecute… Republicans in Congress have repeatedly called for an appointment of a special counsel, during and after the Mueller investigation, to look into the FBI’s actions… It’s possible that Barr wants to head off more specific calls for a special counsel before they have a chance to erupt. If so, then Durham’s new assignment is a smart decision.” Ed Morrissey, Hot Air “Democrats could have a difficult time in attacking Durham. Confirmed as U.S. attorney in February 2018 by a voice vote in the Senate, he had gained praise from Democrats when Trump nominated him. Among these admirers were two of Trump’s biggest critics, Connecticut’s two Democratic senators—Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. The two men had recommended Durham to serve as U.S. attorney.” Fred Lucas, The Daily Signal Dated But Relevant: “Opening an investigation of the opposition political party is not like opening an investigation of a Mafia family or a suspected drug conspiracy. An investigation of a political campaign should not be opened unless there is significant evidence of wrongdoing. Even if there is such evidence, that does not mean anything goes. Using informants to spy on a campaign or its operatives is extremely intrusive and has a high potential for abuse. It should not be done based on a few disturbing connections between campaign surrogates and foreign powers. There should be hard evidence of ongoing, corrupt activities or plotting… “[Moreover] in an investigation of the incumbent administration’s political opposition, it should be too obvious to need mentioning that, if the campaign of the incumbent administration’s party has had a role in generating or supplying information to the FBI, that fact must be disclosed to the court with complete transparency… There needs to be a thorough inquiry. Donald Trump Jr. Agrees to Testify After a contentious back-and-forth relating to a subpoena he faced, Donald Trump Jr. agreed at the last minute to testify before the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee, likely sometime in June. From Fox News: “Ultimately, the panel agreed to limit questioning to 1 to 2 hours, with narrow room for follow-ups, Fox News has learned. A source familiar with the discussions told Fox News the panel never would agree to limit topics. … The committee’s demand to have Trump Jr. testify again reportedly is related to former Trump attorney Michael Cohen’s testimony earlier this year. Cohen, who reported to prison this week to begin a three-year sentence, told a House committee that he had briefed Trump Jr. approximately 10 times about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. But, in 2017, Trump Jr. told the Senate Intelligence Committee he was only ‘peripherally aware’ of the proposal.” The demand that he testify angered some Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham who had this to say: “Anything based on what Michael Cohen said is worthless testimony. Michael Cohen is a worthless witness, and if I were Donald Trump Jr.’s lawyer I would tell him, ‘You don’t need to go back into this environment anymore, you’ve been there for hours and hours and hours. And nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation. I would call it a day.” And speaking of the Mueller investigation, here are 6 things to know about the man investigating how the investigation all began. Updates From the 2020 Campaign Trail Unlike 7 of her 2020 Democratic peers who have either agreed or are currently in talks to do a town hall with Fox News, Elizabeth Warren is taking a “hard pass” on an invitation by the network, calling Fox News “a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists” in an angry Twitter rant. Oddly, the candidate isn’t being accused of inciting violence against Fox News reporters. 🤷 In an appearance on “The View,” Beto O’Rourke admits his Vanity Fair spread was “elitist” because it reinforces a “perception of privilege.” (Uhh, no Beto, it’s just a reality that you’re privileged.) Can we all just agree that Beto is not ready for the big league? Joe Biden says Republicans will have an “epiphany” when President Donald Trump leaves office, and will embrace working with Democratic colleagues. Food for Thought Is breakfast just a social construct? Looking at the history of the traditional American breakfast, it sure sounds like one. The Atlantic took a deep dive into why Americans eat such a narrow variety of foods for our first meal of the day, and more importantly, why it doesn’t need to be that way. In other food news, The Washingtonian published a fascinating inside look at how different restaurants in Washington, D.C., treat their VIP customers and loyal regulars, like you and me. Well, if you’re a regular who owns a Ferrari, that is. “When Carter worked at the Prime Rib, one of his usual customers pulled up to the valet in a Ferrari, and the battery died,” the author wrote. “So during dinner, Carter had some employees procure a new one. By the time the guy finished his meal, the Ferrari was running again.” Must be nice. Important Puppy News A fraternity is under investigation after a video went viral showing college students forcing puppy to drink beer out of a keg. While the investigation into the incident sounds a bit on the dramatic side, it’s pretty apparent these frat boys lack the maturity level that’s necessary to care for dog. From The Washington Post: “The Long Island university confirmed Monday that it suspended its chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi pending the results of an investigation after the five-second clip purportedly involving some of the fraternity’s members prompted fierce backlash. The video, which had been viewed more than 100,000 times on Twitter as of early Tuesday, also caught the attention of the Nassau County SPCA, leading the organization to launch its own investigation.” And Because It’s Hump Day… Donald Trump singing Taylor Swift’s “Me” is everything. Good morning,Sixty-three percent (63%) of voters believe that the minimum wage should be set by state (41%) or local (22%) governments. Just 37% believe it should be established by the federal government.Support
for having state and local governments set the minimum wage comes from
68% of Independent voters, 65% of Republicans, and 56% of Democrats.The
survey also found that 48% of voters favor establishing a lower minimum
wage for teenagers while 38% are opposed. Forty-nine percent (49%)
believe it is more
important to create jobs for low income workers rather than raising the
minimum wage. Thirty-six percent (36%) take the opposite view.
Seventy-one percent (71%) support a temporary training wage for
unskilled workers to learn a new job.I have written in support of letting state and local governments set the minimum wage as
a way to shift the final decision making authority from the politicians
to the people. The wisdom of raising the minimum wage in a particular
county will be determined by the decisions of residents and local
businesses. This approach empowers people to vote with their feet.Twenty-nine percent (29%) of American adults would feel safe riding in a self-driving car today.
Among those who don’t yet feel safe in a self-driving car, 28% think
it’s likely they’ll get comfortable within five to ten years.Still,
just over half the nation’s adults (51%) believe that most cars on the
road will be self-driving within 5-20 years. Eight percent (8%) think it
will happen faster than that while 13% think that day will never come.No
matter how fast the technology and consumer acceptance progress,
adoption of self-driving vehicles will be slowed by the fact that Americans generally hold on to their cars for more than ten years.On another cultural change brought about by technology, 78% of voters nationwide believe online medical information is at least somewhat reliable. Not surprisingly, then, 74% visit medical websites to learn about possible causes when they have unfamiliar medical symptoms.However, 77% of Americans say they would rather see a doctor in person than
online. Only 15% have actually had a telemedicine doctor’s appointment. Another 33% are likely to try one in the future. Finally, today’s Number of the Day highlights
an effort to fundamentally change the way we elect our presidents.
Fourteen (14) states plus the District of Columbia have joined the
National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC). Technically, it’s an
agreement that commits the states to award their Electoral College votes
to whoever wins the popular vote for president nationwide. Change
isn’t coming anytime soon, however. The deal won’t go into
effect until states with at least 270 electoral votes sign up for the
plan. The states already on board have a total of 189 electoral votes.
And, it’s not clear if the deal is allowed by the Constitution.Adding
to the hurdles, there is a decidedly partisan flavor to the effort. All
of the states that have signed on voted for the Democratic candidate in

On this date in the early part of the 20th century, two unrelated and then-obscure events took place in Nevada and California, respectively, that changed the geographical and cultural face of this country. The first was the May 15, 1905 auction of 110 acres of railroad land in Las Vegas. The parcels were between Stewart Avenue on the north to Garces Avenue on the south, and ran from Main Street east all the way to 5th Street, which is present-day Las Vegas Boulevard. The place had promise, but its economy wasn’t helped by Nevada outlawing gambling in 1910. By 1917, the local railroad went belly up and was acquired by Union Pacific, always a mixed blessing, and then, 10 years after World War I, the Great Depression hit. Las Vegas, in other words, was just another struggling Western crossroads. About that time, however, the second of the two unconnected events I mentioned took place. It involved a mouse in an airplane, if you can believe it, as I’ll explain in a moment. The Sin City we know today didn’t happen overnight, however, as other things had to take place first: the advent of large-scale, water-cooled electrical air-conditioning (1906); the legalization of gambling in Nevada (1931); completion of Hoover Dam, with its cheap source of power (1935). Two years later, electricity was flowing from the site to downtown, which some called “Glitter Gulch,” a more Western-sounding name than The Strip. Today, we’d call the development taking place there a “public-private partnership.” What it was called then was…progress. But I’m getting out of sequence. On May 15, 1928, some 235 miles across the desert in Los Angeles, the company owned by Walt Disney and his older brother, Roy, was screening a silent animated film called “Plane Crazy.” Although the test audience liked it well enough, the young filmmakers were unable to pick up a distributor, and the project was tabled. “Plane Crazy” is worth mentioning all these years later because it featured the first appearance of a character you know as Mickey Mouse. In this animated short, the mouse was imitating Charles Lindbergh while trying to impress a female friend. The movie’s highlight was Minnie using her bloomers as a parachute when Mickey wrecked his airplane. It’s no surprise that these kinds of hijinks were funnier with sound effects, which young Walt Disney learned later that year when “Steamboat Willie” — with sound — was released to great acclaim. Disney re-released “Plane Crazy” in 1929, and the rest of it — Mickey, Goofy and Donald Duck; the Mickey Mouse television show with Annette Funicello and friends; the “Wonderful World of Disney”; Disneyland, Disney World, Walt Disney Pictures — all followed through the years. “We’re not trying to entertain the critics,” Walt Disney once said. “I’ll take my chances with the public.” Carl M. Coolidge exposed Deep State plan for “authority over everybody” and “responsible to nobody”
President Calvin Coolidge
warned in a speech given MAY 15, 1926, at the College of William and Mary:
“But there is another … recent development … the greatly disproportionate influence of organized minorities. … Artificial propaganda, paid agitators, selfish interests, all impinge upon members of legislative bodies to force them to represent special elements rather than the great body of their constituency. When they are successful, minority rule is established … … The result is an extravagance on the part of the Government which is ruinous to the people and a multiplicity of regulations and restrictions for the conduct of all kinds of necessary business, which becomes little less than oppressive …” Coolidge continued, exposing the autocratic deep-state bureaucracy: “No plan of centralization has ever been adopted which did not result in bureaucracy, tyranny, inflexibility, reaction, and decline. Of all forms of government, those administered by bureaus are about the least satisfactory to an enlightened and progressive people. Being irresponsible they become autocratic … … Unless bureaucracy is constantly resisted it breaks down representative government and overwhelms democracy. It … sets up the pretense of having authority over everybody and being responsible to nobody …” Coolidge added: “We must also recognize that the national administration is not and cannot be adjusted to the needs of local government … The States should not be induced by coercion or by favor to surrende r the management of their own affairs. The Federal Government ought to resist the tendency to be loaded up with duties which the States should perform. It does not follow that because something ought to be done the National Government ought to do it … Coolidge’s recommendations are similar to what has recently been termed “draining the swamp.” He stated: “I want to see the policy adopted by the States of discharging their public functions so faithfully that instead of an extension on the part of the Federal Government there can be a contraction … The principles of government have the same need to be fortified, reinforced, and supported that characterize the principles of religion.” Calvin Coolidge stated at the unveiling of Equestrian Statue of Bishop Francis Asbury, October 15, 1924, Washington, DC: “There are only two main theories of government in the world. One rests on righteousness, the other rests on force. One appeals to reason, the other appeals to the sword. One is exemplified in a republic, the other is represented by a despotism …” Rise of the Tyrant – Volume 2 of Change to Chains Collins English Dictionary defines “despotism”: “the rule of a despot; arbitrary, absolute, or tyrannical government.” SparkNotes on Locke’s Second Treatise states: “Despotical power is absolute, arbitrary power of one person to take the life and property of another against their will.” John Locke’s Second Treatise on Civil Government (Ch. 14-15) stated in a republic there should be: “No absolute or arbitrary power.” The Constitutions of Kentucky and Wyoming state: “Absolute, arbitrary power over the lives, liberty and property of freemen exists nowhere in a republic.” President Coolidge continued: “The history of government on this earth has been almost entirely a history of the rule of force held in the hands of a few. Under our Constitution, America committed itself to … the power in the hands of the people … … Our government rests upon religion . It is from that source that we derive our reverence for truth and justice, for equality and liberty, and for the rights of mankind. Unless the people believe in these principles they cannot believe in our government.” Coolidge’s reference to “rule of force held in the hands of a few” was the view of the German political philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831), who stated: “The State is god walking on earth.” After Napoleon had overrun Europe so easily, Prussian King Frederick William III embraced Hegel’s philosophy to strengthen the German state. Hegel wrote in Philosophy of History (Jacob Loewenberg, ed., Hegel: Selections, New York: C. Scribner’s Sons, 1929, p. 398): “The origin of a State involves imperious lordship on the one hand, instinctive submission on the other. Obedience — Lordly power, and the fear inspired by a ruler — in itself implies some degree of voluntary connection … it is not the isolated will of individuals that prevails; individual pretensions are relinquished, and the general will is the essential bond of political union.” Who is the King in America? And Who are the Counselors to the King? An Overview of 6,000 Years of History & Why America is Unique “Hegelian dialectics” is the method of concentrating power by first creating a crisis. Described as a triangle: one corner is the THESIS; the opposite corner it the ANTITHESIS; and the top corner is the SYNTHESIS. In other words, first create a problem that is real bad , and then the people will readily surrender their freedoms to settle for a solution that is only half as bad. Each SYNTHESIS then becomes the new THESIS, and the process is repeated until all power is voluntarily relinquished by the people into the hands of a imperial dictator. To create an antithesis, there needs to be division in society. To seize control of a country, citizens must be made to stop thinking of themselves as citizens. Instead, they must identify and be divided into social, ethnic, or economic groups, which can then be pitted against one another. The manufactured, successive incidents of violence between these groups destabilizes the country, persuading the people to quickly surrender their freedoms to someone promising to restore order. Hegel was against the people ruling themselves, wanting instead to have all power in the hands of a dictator. He wrote in Philosophy of Law (Section 279): “When it is contrasted with the sovereignty of the monarch, the phrase ‘sovereignty of the people’ turns out to be merely one of those confused notions which arise from the wild idea of the ‘people’. Without its monarch … the people are just a formless multitude.” Similar to today’s “social media censorship,” Hegel wrote in Philosophy of Law (Jacob Loewenberg, ed., Hegel: Selections, NY: C. Scribner’s Sons, 1929, pp. 457, 461-62): “The many … whom one chooses to call the people, are indeed a collection, but only as a multitude, a formless mass, whose movement and action would be elemental, irrational, savage, and terrible … Public opinion deserves … to be esteemed as much as to be despised … The definition of the freedom of the press as freedom to say and write what one pleases … such a view belongs to the uneducated crudity and superficiality of naive thinking.” America’s God and Country Encyclopedia of Quotations Hegel influenced Darwin, who referred to Hegel’s dialectics in support the theory of species evolving. Hegel influenced Adolph Hitler, who wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle). Hegel influenced Karl Marx, who was member of the “Young Hegelians” at the University of Berlin. Both Communism and Nazism intentionally fomented unrest and anarchy which resulted in power being consolidated into the hands of the state. The practical implementation of Hegel’s theory is to identify tension “fault lines” in a society, fan these real or perceived injustices into flame causing public emotions reach the boiling point. Once crisis breaks out, everyone is desperate to have the anarchy stopped, so in a “knee-jerk reaction” they relinquish their rights and freedoms to the state and dictator. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels explained (Marx and Engels Collected Works, Vol. 10, p. 318): “It goes without saying that these conspirators by no means confine themselves to organizing the revolutionary proletariat. Their business consists in … spurring it in to artificial crises … For them the only condition required for the revolution is a sufficient organization of their own conspiracy. They are the alchemists of the revolution.” Friedrich Engels wrote (London: W.O. Henderson, The Life of Friedrich Engels, 1976; Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy, 1844): “Every new crisis must be more serious and more universal than the last. Every fresh slump must ruin more small capitalists and increase the workers who live only by their labor. This will increase the number of the unemployed and this is the main problem that worries economists. In the end commercial crises will lead to a social revolution far beyond the comprehension of the economists with their scholastic wisdom.” Saul Alinsky wrote in Rules for Radicals (1971): “The organizer … must first rub raw the resentments of the people of the community; fan the latent hostilities of many of the people to the point of overt expression. He must search out controversy and issues, rather than avoid them, for unless there is controversy people are not concerned enough to act … An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction and discontent; provide a channel into which the people can angrily pour their frustrations.” Crisis can either be created or coincidental and capitalized on for the political purpose of concentrating control. Some crises include: students needing safe-spaces where they will not be traumatized by hearing triggering views; claims of victimhood by aggressive, intolerant groups; hateful organizations projecting their hate onto their innocent naive opponents; fundamental Muslims being “offended”; occupy Wall Street protests; school or other shootings capitalized upon for political purposes; orchestrated global warming crisis; and manufactured healthcare crisis. Whatever the crisis is, the solution is the same — citizens must surrender freedoms to the state. Former communist David Horowitz quoted their philosophy: “The issue is never the issue … The issue is always the revolution.” Individuals who think the issue is the goal were referred to by Lenin as “useful idiots.” Regarding a “socialized medicine” crisis, Reagan recorded in 1961 an LP titled “Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine” for the American Medical Association’s Operation Coffeecup Campaign: “Now back in 1927 an American socialist, Norman Thomas, six times candidate for president on the Socialist Party ticket, said the American people would never vote for socialism. But he said under the name of liberalism the American people will adopt every fragment of the socialist program … One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project …” Reagan continued: “Madison in 1788 … said … ‘There are more instances of the abridgment of the freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power, than by violent and sudden usurpations’ … We want no further encroachment on these individual liberties and freedoms … We do not want socialized medicine … If you don’t, this program I promise you will pass … and behind it will come other federal programs that will invade every area of freedom as we have known … until, one day … we will awake to find that we have socialism. And … you and I are going to spend our sunset year s telling our children and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.” Rise of the Tyrant – Volume 2 of Change to Chains Calvin Coolidge gave insight into America’s success at maintaining order in his address at the 150th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia, July 5, 1926: “The principles … which went into the Declaration of Independence … are found in … the sermons … of the early colonial clergy who were earnestly undertaking to instruct their congregations in the great mystery of how to live. They preached equality because they believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. They justified freedom by the text that we are all created in the divine image … … Placing every man on a plane where he acknowledged no superiors, where no one possessed any right to rule over him, he must inevitably choose his own rulers through a system of self-government … In order that they might have freedom to express these thoughts and opportunity to put them into action, WHOLE CONGREGATIONS WITH THEIR PASTORS MIGRATED TO THE COLONIES …” Coolidge concluded: “The Declaration of Independence is a great spiritual document … Equality, liberty, popular sovereignty, the rights of man — these are … ideals. They have their source and their roots in the religious convictions. They belong to the unseen world. Unless the faith of the American in these religious convictions is to endure, the principles of our Declaration will perish. We can not continue to enjoy the result if we neglect and abandon the cause.” President Calvin Coolidge stated on September 21, 1924, in an address to the Holy Name Society in Washington, D.C.: “Equality is recognized … from belief in the brotherhood of man through the fatherhood of God … It seems perfectly plain that the right to equality has for its foundation reverence for God. | Culture debates have united Republicans over the last two decades – more than policy, the economy, and certainly trade and tariffs. And Republicans have been punished when they go too far on culture (see Clinton’s impeachment, Terri Schiavo and those transvaginal ultrasound bills in Virginia). That’s maybe the best way to view the news out of Alabama, whose state Senate last night approved legislation essentially banning abortion at every stage. Additionally, states like Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio have passed laws effectively banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy – when a fetal heartbeat can be detected – ensuring that abortion will be a significant topic in 2020. With the NRA hobbled right now, abortion has become even more important to Republicans in fighting the culture wars. Just listen President Trump in his campaign rallies. But as the polling suggests, the country doesn’t like it when either party becomes too aggressive on abortion. And that’s the danger for Republicans – whether it’s the legislation out of Alabama or Georgia. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty Images Electability, yeah you know me “Electability” means so many different things to different people – it’s difficult to gauge or define. Still, it’s striking that none of the Top 5 2020 Democrats in the polls right now – Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg – has any past record of being able to win or even compete in a purple/red state in a general election. Biden’s from Delaware and hasn’t been on the ballot by himself since 2008. Sanders is a democratic socialist from Vermont. Warren hails from Massachusetts – a graveyard of past failed Dem nominees (Dukakis, Kerry). Harris is from California. And Buttigieg lost his lone statewide race in Indiana by 25 points. By contrast, outside of the Top 5 in polling are: Amy Klobuchar (who won 60 percent of the vote in Minnesota last fall)new entrant Steve Bullock (who’s won statewide twice in Montana)Beto O’Rourke (who narrowly lost in Texas in ’18) and Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper (who’ve won multiple statewide bids in Colorado) Sure, folks like Biden and Sanders can point to early general-election polls to say they’re “electable.” And sure, Donald Trump – a former Democrat from New York City – proved that almost anyone has a puncher’s chance to win if they become the nominee. But it’s notable – before the first debates, mind you – that Dem voters aren’t rewarding those who have actual RECORDS of being able to win or compete in purple/red states. Is it simply because these voters aren’t aware of these records? Or that progressive Dems don’t find cross-partisan appeal all that compelling? Or that Biden – carrying the Obama banner – has become the standard-bearer for Dem voters who do care about cross-partisan appeal? It’s going to be McCready vs. Bishop in NC-9 race Well, we have our general election matchup in the NC-9 congressional race – the 2018 election that got rejected after fraud allegations. GOP state Sen. Dan Bishop won the GOP primary on Tuesday night, and he will face Democrat Dan McCready on Sept. 10, the Charlotte Observer writes. Speaking of culture wars… “As he had throughout the campaign, Bishop decried the ‘liberal crazy clowns’ in Washington. He described their agenda as ‘socialism, open borders (and) infanticide,’” the paper adds. “In a statement, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee signaled its own attacks against Bishop: As the architect of House Bill 2, the so-called ‘bathroom bill,’ and the heir to what it called Republican election fraud.” TWEET OF THE DAY: Sock it to me 2020 VISION: Gillibrand heads to Georgia This morning, Kirsten Gillibrand’s campaign announced that she will travel to Atlanta on Thursday to meet with women, patients and health-care providers in wake of that state passing an effective six-week abortion ban. The Abortion Bill in Alabama Would be the Strictest Pro-Life Law in the Country

The Abortion Debate Comes to Alabama
On Tuesday, the Alabama state senate passed H.B. 314 by a 25-6 vote
with one abstention. The bill establishes the legal personhood of unborn
children and prohibits nearly all abortion. If Republican governor Kay
Ivey signs the legislation — which the bill’s supporters anticipate — it
would be the strictest pro-life law in the entire country, though it is
highly unlikely that it would survive the inevitable legal challenge
from abortion-rights groups.
